According to Frost & Sullivan, passenger traffic across airports in the five major ASEAN countries of Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines and Thailand, is expected to reach close to 318 million passengers by 2017.

Growth of maritime is expected to be driven by increasing port development in countries such as Singapore and Malaysia in efforts to increase their traffic handling capacities. The total sea freight traffic handled in this region is expected to reach 2.52 billion tonnes by 2017.

On the defense front, the acquisition of UAVs, armoured vehicles, ships and aircraft will drive defense procurement spending in the near future. A lot of this increased spending is being driven by the rising geopolitical instability in the region and the need for replacement of obsolete military equipment. Defense spending in the ASEAN region is expected to grow at a CAGR of close to 10% during 2012 to 2020, reaching more than US$61 billion by 2020.

"Overall, 2012 to 2020 is expected to be a period of opening up of many growth opportunities for the aerospace, defense and maritime industries in ASEAN region in the near future. An international economic development journal has ranked Daytons Ohio Aerospace Hub website among the worlds top economic development websites for 2012.

The publication fDi Intelligence, a unit of the London-based Financial Times Group, specializes in foreign direct investment and the business of globalization.

The Ohio Aerospace Hubs website, created by Atomic Interactive, a Dayton-based web design firm, tied for 12th internationally in digital marketing among economic development websites and placed third among economic zone websites, which serve special areas targeted for development within a city, state or country. Another Ohio website that scored high was the Columbus Region, which came in at No. 2 in the website rankings just behind an Irish site.

This is a great acknowledgement of the hard work we are doing as a community to promote Dayton as a place for aerospace companies to be, said Keith Klein, senior development specialist with the city of Dayton.

The Ohio Aerospace Hub was designated by the state as a location for aerospace research and innovation. Hub partners include the city of Dayton, the University of Dayton, CityWide Development Corp. and the Dayton Development Coalition.

In October, commercial jet manufacturer Airbus said it wants to double the $12 billion it spends each year in the U.S. on aircraft components and signed an agreement with local officials that could establish a manufacturing training center in the Dayton area.

Keeping Washington's aerospace industry happy is a necessity for government officials in 2013, as the state swears in a new governor.

"The challenge for the state of Washington is: How are they going to continue to grow the aerospace industry with the budget woes they've got?" said Scott Hamilton, an analyst with Issaquah-based Leeham Co.

More to the point: Can the state retain what it has?

In recent years, with the help of industry organizations, the state and local governments in Washington have gotten behind training and education efforts geared at the aerospace industry. With her term waning, Gov. Chris Gregoire earlier this month included another $26 million for aerospace training in her 2013 to 2015 budget proposal.

But it will be up to Gov.-elect Jay Inslee to set the state's aerospace strategy.

"Aerospace is one of the priority clusters in (Inslee's) jobs plan," Sterling Clifford, an Inslee spokesman, said in an interview Friday.

A looming wave of aerospace workers retiring will put pressure on the state to ensure there's a training plan in place to meet the industry's needs. Inslee is aware of that, Clifford said.

Linda Lanham, executive director of the Aerospace Futures Alliance, advocated for many of the worker training programs that are in place.

The U.S. is the worlds largest aerospace and defense market, and also home to the worlds largest military budget. The industry largely depends on U.S. government contracts. As such, the outlook for the industry is closely tied to the outlook for defense spending by the government. The spending component of the ongoing budget debate and the Fiscal Cliff is heavily weighted towards the defense budget.

Defense spending is the major source of revenue for the top nine global aerospace and defense companies, with the US accounting for more than 40% of total global defense spending. Given the uncertain macroeconomic environment, not just in the U.S. but also globally, the industry faces the risk of fewer new orders as customers are more likely to postpone or cancel contractual orders and/or payments.

In December this year, the U.S. Senate unanimously approved the fiscal 2013 budget worth $633.3 billion. Of this, $527.5 billion was allotted to fund basic national defense and the Energy Department, $17.4 billion was for nuclear weapons projects and $88.5 billion more for overseas operations.

Currently, the U.S. defense spending is negatively impacted by the Budget Control Act of 2011. The Budget Control Act of 2011 has two main parts that would affect future defense spending. The first part dictates a $487.0 billion reduction to previously-planned defense spending over the next decade. The second part is a sequester mechanism that would impose an additional $500.0 billion of cuts on defense spending if Congress is not able to reduce the U.S. deficit by $1.2 trillion by January 2, 2013.

With just days to go before the deadline hits, the issue is as uncertain now as it was immediately after the November elections. While a grand bargain doesnt appear to be on the table anymore, a non-resolution of the Cliff issue would be a major blow to the aerospace industry. In fact, the Congressional Budget Office expects the economy to slide into a recession if the automatic spending cuts and tax increases associated with the Fiscal Cliff are not averted.

Since the September 2001 WTC and Pentagon attacks, the U.S. government has spent significant amounts on military campaigns overseas. The country has already decided to gradually move out of Afghanistan, and the war in Iraq has already ended, which is expected to lower its expenditure on foreign campaigns. In addition to budgetary constraints, including the Budget Control Act, defense spending will come down with the draw-down of U.S. force levels tied to current major overseas deployments.

OPPORTUNITIES

Acquisition, Merger, Spin-offs and Strategic Alliances

The big defense operators armed with strong balance sheets are expanding their operations inorganically through acquisitions. The U.S. Defense department also endorses mergers among U.S. defense companies, provided they dont involve the top five or six suppliers acquiring each other. For that matter, the industry encourages acquisitions as the highest-priority investment area for a company with a sizeable cash balance looking for growth amid significant defense budget cuts.

In fact, the four main strategies to stimulate that growth are joint ventures, foreign military sales, international expansion and mergers and alliances.
