Charlotte leaders inaugurate UTC Aerospace HQ

Politicians and business leaders touted growth Friday at UTC Aerospace Systems, the new incarnation of the former Charlotte-based Goodrich Corp., which United Technologies Corp. acquired last year.

Lured in part by state and local incentives, the company combined many of its business operations in Charlotte after its $18.4 billion acquisition of Goodrich. UTC moved dozens of high-ranking employees from Connecticut to Charlotte.

As a result, company officials said payroll at its Charlotte division headquarters has increased from 160 to 250, with plans to increase to more than 300 in the coming years. The company also went from using three floors of its office building to all six.

Sweating in the summer heat, officials spoke outside companys West Tyvola Road offices at a ceremony to formally inaugurate the new business division.

UTC Aerospace Systems makes components for aircraft and spacecraft throughout the world. The companys components go into jets made by Boeing, Airbus, Bombardier, helicopters for the U.S. Marines and the International Space Station, among others.

After UTC acquired Goodrich, formerly one of the Fortune 500 companies headquartered in Charlotte, the company moved about 75 of its Hamilton Sundstrand employees to Charlotte from Connecticut to form UTC Aerospace Systems.

The Hartford Courant reported that, with an average compensation of $290,000, the managers represented nearly $22 million worth of annual payroll.

Economic development officials said UTC also considered locating the division headquarters in South Carolina, Florida and Virginia. Incentives helped UTC make its decision. Former Gov. Bev Perdue was in office at the time.

The company received a $2.5 million grant from the state, $2.5 million in Charlotte and Mecklenburg County grants, and up to $16.5 million worth of additional state grants over the next 12 years, contingent on meeting job creation and investment targets.

The Ohio Aerospace Institute (OAI), which supports the state's aerospace economy, and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University-Worldwide's Center for Aviation and Aerospace Leadership (CAAL) announced Monday that they have formed a special partnership that will allow them to collaborate on aerospace education, research and development, and leadership training.

"This collaboration is more than us simply working together. It is a testament to both OAI's and Embry-Riddle's innovation, commitment to and leadership position in the aerospace industry," said Dr. Michael Heil, president and CEO, OAI. Summit set for aerospace and defense suppliers

SEATTLE, June 26 (UPI) -- Major aerospace and defense industry manufacturers and suppliers will gather in the United States to explore supply chain opportunities.

The gathering -- Aerospace & Defense Supplier Summit -- will be held in Seattle, Wash., next year and will be hosted by BCI Aerospace, an international organizer of trade events.

The summit is supported by the Washington State Department of Commerce and sponsored by the Washington Aerospace Partnership, Accenture and the City of Renton. Four Boeing business units -- Commercial Airplanes; Defense, Space and Security; Engineering, Operations & Technology; and Shared Services Group -- will participate in the event.

"There is tremendous opportunity in the aerospace market over the next 20 years and collaboration is the key, " said Kent Fisher, vice president and general manager of Supplier Management for Boeing Commercial Airplanes. Canadian and U.S. Aerospace Industries to Benefit from Fast-growing Emerging Markets: BMO Economics

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS and TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Jun 25, 2013) - Fast-growing demand in emerging markets represents a key opportunity for aerospace producers in the U.S. and Canada, while demand growth is likely to remain moderate but relatively stable in North America, according to BMO Capital Markets.

"Aerospace exports to developing economies have grown significantly over the past two decades," said Aaron Goertzen, Economist, BMO Capital Markets. "U.S. producers have a slightly stronger foothold in developing markets than their Canadian counterparts, but Canadian firms are also benefitting from the export of U.S.-assembled aircraft containing Canadian-made components."

He noted that the United Arab Emirates - which has poured resources into establishing itself as a major player in air travel - and China, have become key export markets. "The U.S. and Canada are beginning to see more aggressive competition from emerging-market producers, who are becoming more effective at challenging advanced-economy producers on their home turf," said Mr. Goertzen.

However, even with the expansion of emerging-market players, producers in advanced economies still hold a commanding share of the global market, with the United States alone accounting for nearly half of global aerospace revenue. Canada, meanwhile, is ranked as the fifth-largest global aerospace producer. Overall, the North American industry accounts for $200 billion in annual revenue.

Air travel and freight volumes are expected to grow in 2013, which should support airline profitability and underpin further expansion in aerospace orders. The gradually improving global economic outlook together with ultra-low interest rates should continue to support industry activity in this year after contributing positively to aerospace demand in 2012.

In particular, private orders for corporate aircrafts in the U.S. are expected to be strong in the coming years. "Corporate aviation is highly cyclical, and we're starting to see some real momentum," said Joe DiLallo, Vice President & Director, Corporate Aircraft Finance, BMO Harris Bank. "Deliveries and orders of corporate jets have increased significantly this year, and we anticipate growth will be in the 5 per cent range for the industry through 2016. This solid recovery in private demand has created a record backlog of unfilled orders, which would support industry output even if the global recovery were to unfold at a slower-than-anticipated pace. Over the past five years the aerospace industry has kept two to three years' worth of unfilled orders on the books - well ahead of historical norms. As a result, the industry has started ramping up production and should continue to build momentum over the next few years.

Elevated fuel prices are increasing airline demand for more fuel-efficient aircraft. Although high fuel prices weigh on airline profitability, they also increase demand for newer, more fuel-efficient aircraft - a big positive for aerospace producers. Indeed, aerospace orders boomed as energy prices surged during the commodity run-up in 2007-08. Although a softer economy has kept demand subdued compared to its frenetic pre-recession pace, upward pressure on energy prices expected over the medium term bodes well for the aerospace industry. Innovate Washington and the newly formed Joint Center for Aerospace Technology Innovation (JCATI) brought together an elite-class of aerospace experts at their first annual future of aerospace symposium on the University of Washingtons Seattle campus held Monday. The symposium follows a recent proposal to the FAA to site an unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) research and testing facility in central Washington the development of which many cite as the future of the industry.

Washington has long been a leader in aerospace, and we are thrilled to be aggressively driving the conversation on what is next for the industry and in particular for Washington states role in the industry, said Bart Phillips, vice president of economic development at Innovate Washington. Expanding the states innovation into unmanned aircraft systems is an exciting opportunity to create new jobs." A recent study from the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) noted that this innovation has the potential to bring more than 10,000 jobs to the state.

The symposium featured industry thought leaders from Washington, NASAs Jet Propulsion Lab, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), among others, who will explore what they consider to be the future of aerospace through interactive and discussion based sessions ranging from biofuels and 787 production to space exploration and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
