Kwang-Tzu Yang, professor emeritus of aerospace and mechanical engineering at the University of Notre Dame, died in his home Wednesday, July 29.

He will be remembered by his students and colleagues for his joy, his genuine smile and his significant contributions to the field of thermal sciences. An article in the International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer, celebrating his 80th birthday and numerous accomplishments, described his approach to life: Yet to him it is all simply a search for understanding and a part of the unity of knowledgeand he is always looking for new ways of stimulating the interest of his audience and of getting them to participate in the quest for understanding.

Yang was born in Suzhou, China, in 1926 and came to the United States in 1948 to attend the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. While there, he earned his bachelors degree in 1951, masters degree in 1952 and completed his Ph.D. in 1955 under the supervision of Max Jakob, physicist and pioneer in the field of thermal heat transfer.

Soon after receiving his doctorate, he joined the Notre Dame faculty of the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering. He was promoted to professor in 1963, served as department chair from 1967 to 1978 and was appointed the Viola D. Hank Professor of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering in 1986.

1.2m CNC investment helps TGM move up the aerospace and defence supply chain – Bdaily

Member Article

Targeting opportunities with the major aerospace primes has seen a Lancashire manufacturing specialist invest 1.2m into state-of-the-art CNC technologies.

TGM, which is part of the 43m Aero Services Global (AS.G) Group, has just completed its first parts for a MoD contract on its recently installed Zimmermann FZ33 compact milling machine.

The long bed capabilities, machine dynamics, 30,000 RPM and fast cycle times are perfect for creating complex components to the exacting standards required by the aerospace and defence sectors.

This investment will provide the company with additional capability to take on more than 2m of new work annually, as well as allowing it to tender for work on larger structural assemblies.

Sarah Stephens, Director at TGM, commented: Traditionally we have provided 3, 4 and 5-axis machined components to aerospace tier 1s and this is still a core market, but we now have the technology, processes and skills in place to work directly with the primes.

The Zimmermann is a fantastic machine and is the largest out of all of the 18-strong CNC machine tools we currently have at our Preston facility. An initial package of work is already in production on the Zimmermann and there are plenty of opportunities we are currently exploring that could fill up capacity.

With this additional technology, we are hoping to double sales from 3m to 6m over the next two years.

TGM, which became part of AS.G in 2016, specialises in the machining of both hard and soft metals, producing components and sub-assemblies for customers supplying Airbus and BAE Systems.

Continued investment in processes, upgrading operational efficiencies and upskilling of its workforce has helped it achieve world class manufacturing (99.85%) and delivery (99.16%) performance and the Bronze SC21 award for the third successive year.

The companys core engineering skills have also been further boosted by the introduction of CATIA V5 CAD design packages and inspection software to ensure a total end-to-end solution for the customer.

Sarah added: The first package of work for the Zimmermann is worth 1.4m to our business over two years and is the type of contract we are now looking to secure.

Its all about positioning TGM as a strategic critical partner to the primes and ensuring we can add value at every part of the process. This wouldnt have been possible three years ago, but a combination of the investment, industry approvals and a track record of quality and delivery has paved the way.

Covid-19 has brought its own challenges, but we feel we are in a good position to come through the pandemic and proactively establish our new position in the supply chain.

About AS.G

AS.G was founded in 2015 with the aim of developing a highly specialist group, which could help a global customer base to consolidate their supply chains through innovation, efficiencies and excellent value for money.

It started operations with the acquisition of Phoenix Ltd in December that year and now boasts seven subsidiary companies, including Queens Award-winning Arrowsmith Engineering, B&H Precision Tooling, Datum, Ludolph, TGM and AMF Precision Engineering.

The group, which employs nearly 380 people, is split into two core divisions focusing on aerospace and tooling, providing a wide range of products from simple brushes, complex mill turned components and small, medium and large 5-axis milled parts to tooling, transportation media and fixtures for existing and next generation aircraft fuselages and wings.

These parts are delivered all over the world to customers, including Aeronova, Airbus, Leonardo Helicopters, GKN, ITP, Meggitt, Rolls-Royce and Spirit Aero Systems.

Stripped F-117 Nighthawk Arrives at Hill Aerospace Museum Direct From Tonopah – The Drive

While the U.S. Air Force still has some F-117A Nighthawks actively involved in flying operations, others are being removed from storage and transported for display at a select number of museums. This stripped-down F-117A was delivered to the Hill Aerospace Museum at Hill Air Force Base, Utah, yesterday.

The fuselage of the aircraft arrived by truck, direct from Tonopah Test Range Airport (TTR) in Nevada. Staff from Hill AFB, which is adjacent to the museum, assisted in moving it from the truck and into the museum. The aircraft arrived having been stripped of its trademark black Radar Absorbent Material (RAM). The demilitarization process for the Nighthawk is extremely complex, and it is detailed in this previous War Zone feature. The USAF has established a special facility to assist in the demilitarization of the F-117s at Tonopah.

The museum staff at Hill AFB will now re-attach aircraft 82-0799s wings, rear stabilizers, and other parts of the aircraft before it is repainted and put on display at the museums Lindquist Stewart Gallery. Some of these parts will be totally fabricated to look like the real thing as their structures are still highly classified and they cannot be kept within reach of the public. This particular aircraft flew some 21 missions during Operation Desert Storm in 1991.

The airframe appeared to have been delivered without its wings or tails and in an uncovered state, which is different than how we have seen F-117s transported in the past. This aircraft could be the same one the Department of Defense listed on its internal surplus exchange last March.

Another F-117 is shortly due to go on display at the Palm Springs Air Museum for its new Houston Pavilion, along with The Air Zoo Aerospace and Science Museum, in Michigan, which says it will be the first non-government museum to exhibit the aircraft.

The National Museum of the U.S. Air Force, in Dayton Ohio, is due to receive an F-117A to complement YF-117A serial 79-10781 that is currently on display. F-117A serial 82-0803 is now loaned to the Reagan Presidential Foundation and on display at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum in Simi Valley, California. This particular Nighthawk was actually demilitarized at the Air Force Plant 42 at Palmdale, California, rather than at Tonopah. The preparation of the aircraft for display can be seen here.

The USAF has earmarked a dozen F-117s for loan to museums for public display. With the exception of the remains of Vega 31 in Serbia, the few other Nighthawks currently on display are pre-production YF-117s.

All told, the USAF looks to be moving fast to place the 12 F-117s set aside for display around the country, while a handful of others remain active flying missions from TTR. The rest of the airframes still being stored at the remote airbase are set to slowly be destroyed over the coming decade.

L2 Aviation, a subcontractor to Collins Aerospace, in a July 29 press release announced that Mode-5 Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (ADS-B) upgrades for the U.S. Air Force KC-10 Extender Aerial Refueling Tanker Fleet have been completed.

The Texas-based avionics engineering and modifications company was awarded the contract by Collins Aerospace on Nov. 12, and completed each installation in just 4.5 days per aircraft on average which was quicker than the time originally set even during the outbreak, the company said. Upgrades were completed for a total of 58 aircraft, with the Mode 5 installation and software upgrade featuring APX119-0531 hardware, interfaces, ancillary equipment, and upgraded software along with removal of legacy hardware and wire harnesses, according to the Air Force.

"The project was delayed for eight days at the start and then we faced another delay of eight additional days while under quarantine for suspected COVID-19 exposure of a team member, said Adam Tsakonas, Program Manager for L2 Aviation. Even with the loss of 16 days the program pulled ahead of the original schedule and we were able to scale back to a single mod-line as we worked through the final aircraft."

Boeing recently signed a $265 million contract for nine more MH-47G Block II Chinook helicopters that employees in its Philadelphia plant will assemble for the U.S. Army Special Operations Aviation Command (USASOAC).

Howmet Aerospace eagerly awaits return of Boeing jets – Pittsburgh Business Times

Pittsburgh-based Howmet Aerospace Inc., in line with many other Pittsburgh manufacturers in the aerospace supply chain, took a hit in the second quarter due to both impacts from the Covid-19 pandemic on the industry and ongoing issues around production and grounding of Boeings 737 Max planes.

Its a tough start for the company, which in April became an independent company upon the completion of Arconic Inc.s split into Howmet and Arconic Corp.

Howmet Aerospace reported $1.25 billion in revenue in the second quarter of the year, down 31% from the same quarter in 2019. In more detail, the company saw its revenue in the commercial aerospace industry decrease by 36% and its revenue in the commercial transportation industry decrease by 54%.

Despite ongoing uncertainty and volatility in the aerospace market due to the pandemic, Howmet CEO John Plant provided a financial outlook for the remainder of the year. Plant said he expects full year 2020 revenue to total between $5.1 billion and $5.3 billion. In the third quarter, he said he anticipates revenue to total between $1 billion and $1.1 billion.

I wish we could be more certain, Plant said. I think the one thing that should be recognized is that we have done our best to give you guidance.

Howmet announced plans to reduce its previously stated capital expenditure expectations for 2020 from $200 million down to $175 million. Plant said the company expects volume in the third quarter to be lower again and then start to recover in the fourth quarter of the year.

Much of the outlook, however, depends on the unknown future of the Covid-19 pandemic and its impact on the production levels of aerospace giants like Boeing and Airbus. Its also, in part, hinged on Boeing recertifying and getting its 737 Max jets back in the air, since theyve been grounded after two deadly crashes in recent years.

Assuming recertification goes ahead then that will be good news, and Boeing plans to resume deliveries and increase build rates as we go into 2021, Plant said. That is the time we are looking forward to. I think the whole industry is looking forward to that time.

Aerospace Fan Cases Market 2020: What are the new innovations by companies? -Top Key GE Aviation, Magellan Aerospace - The Daily Chronicle

Arconic, ATI struggle with sales in the aerospace industry – Pittsburgh Business Times

As manufacturers report recoveries from Covid-19 impact in sight for many end markets in their second quarter 2020 financial results, outlook for the aerospace industry remains dim.

Pittsburgh-based Arconic Corp. reported second quarter sales of $1.2 billion, down 38% year over year, during the companys quarterly earnings call Tuesday. The company also reported a net loss of $92 million in the second quarter, compared to a net income of $5 million in the second quarter of 2019.

Pittsburgh-based Allegheny Technologies Inc. saw $770 million in sales in the second quarter of 2020, down from $1.1 billion in sales in the second quarter of 2019. The company also reported a net loss of $422 million, during its second quarter earning call Tuesday.

When it comes to aerospace specifically, Arconic saw sales drop 26% year over year, due to both the continued grounding of Boeings 737 MAX planes and a sharp decrease in demand due to Covid-19. ATI, for similar reasons, saw its high-performance materials and components segment sales drop 44% in the quarter and sales to the commercial aerospace market in particular drop 50%.

I think its really going to be somewhere well into 2021 before it improves, George Ferguson, Bloomberg analyst who follows the aerospace industry, said. We are still in the midst of a slow down for new builds I think this year is going to be really rough, because airlines are still in rough shape financially, and the travel recovery slowed down recently because of the outbreaks of coronavirus in the south of the U.S. and the west of the U.S. and now in Spain.

Boeing, which reported its second quarter results last week, had planned to get its 737 Max planes, grounded after two deadly crashes in recent years, back up to a production level of 31 planes per month for a good portion of 2021. However, the company already pushed that back, saying it would aim to get to that 31 number by the end of 2021, Ferguson said.

We could not have picked a more interesting or more challenging time to start our journey as an independent company, Arconic CEO Tim Myers, said, regarding the companys split from Arconic Inc. into Arconic Corp. and Howmet Aerospace in April.

Myers said he expects a roughly 50% drop in aerospace sales year over year for Arconics second half of 2020. ATI CEO Robert Wetherbee said he also expects the negative impact to last for a few more quarters due to the significant decline in aerospace end markets, especially for the air frame part of its business.

On the air frame side, because of the length of that supply chain, it has taken longer to understand when is the Max coming back and what are the implications of Covid on long term airplane deliveries, Wetherbee said, during the call Tuesday. It will be a quicker down and up for engines and slower down and up on the frames.

Arconic also had a tough quarter for ground transportation, reporting a 57% revenue decline year over year due primarily to halted production of automotive manufacturers. However, the company anticipates the second half of 2020 to approach the run rates it saw in the second half of 2019.

I just think ground transportation, they are not as affected by the coronavirus as the airplane business is because everyone is scared of being stuck in a tube in the sky with a bunch of people whos health conditions they dont know, Ferguson said.

Looking ahead, the companies aim to remain nimble in case a Covid-19 vaccine or treatment jumpstarts recovery in the aerospace industry.

[A vaccine] would give a lot of impetus to increase air travel which would lead to improvement on that side, Wetherbee said. We feel well positioned for the new builds. One thing we have seen across the aerospace industry is that the airlines are retiring the old stuff, which would position us well for faster recovery with a vaccine.

Why Mega-Cap Defense Stocks May Be the Best Idea for the Rest of 2020 – 24/7 Wall St.

Aerospace & Defense

August 7, 2020 7:26 am

Last Updated: August 7, 2020 11:16 am

Technology has swept investors up over the past few years. With the mega-caps all posting solid results last week, many investors are looking for somewhere to move capital. While tech will continue to roll, the same may not be said for the rebound in the economy. The extra unemployment benefits have run out, it will be a while before another round of stimulus checks gets to citizens and uncertainty remains the one constant.

A new RBC research report from Michael Eisen and the aerospace and defense team says what many experienced investors are well aware of: the outlook forward remains positive because defense especially will get funded by the government. The report noted this about the sectors underperformance over the past three months:

Defense exposure continues to provide a more stable fundamental backdrop. Investor concerns regarding the outlook for defense budgets has weighed on the sectors valuation, which we think has been overstated. The group has appreciated on average by 4% over the past 3 months, vs. +16% for the S&P 500. Earnings results from the Defense contractors have all held in much better than feared, delivering headline beats for all companies with a majority of sales to the end market. Book-to-bill ratios also held above 1x across the board, with the strongest backlog growth coming from space based programs. In contrast, the outlook for Commercial demand has turned more bleak as the spread of COVID-19 continues to trend in the wrong direction.

We screened the RBC coverage universe looking for mega-cap leaders that are rated Outperform, and four look like outstanding ideas for investors looking to gain a more defensive posture, literally and figuratively, for the rest of the year.

This company has had a public relations nightmare due to the 737 Max issues. Boeing Co. (NYSE: BA) is the worlds leading aerospace company and the largest manufacturer of commercial jetliners and military aircraft combined. It is also one of the most valuable brands in the world.

The different segments in the company are Commercial Airplanes, Boeing Defense, Space & Security and Boeing Capital. The latter provides financial solutions facilitating sale and delivery of Boeing commercial and military aircraft, satellites and launch vehicles.

The analysts noted this:

CEO Dave Calhoun stated that the company is prudently and proactively reviewing every aspect of our company. This could result in the divestiture of business lines to sharpen the companys focus and provide incremental capital to fund operations and future R&D.

While the macro environment is still highly uncertain, many on Wall Street believe Boeing can communicate greater visibility and confidence in all the key matters the company faces. Recertification test flights have begun, customers have had more time to make near-term and long-term fleet planning decisions, and Boeing secured $25 billion of additional liquidity with the May bond issuance.

The RBC price objective for the shares is $194, while the Wall Street consensus target is lower at $175.77. Boeing stock closed Thursday trading at $172.20.

This company, like other major defense prime contractors, has had a solid year, and the balance of 2020 could be better. General Dynamics Corp. (NYSE: GD) is engaged in business aviation, land and expeditionary combat vehicles and systems, armaments, munitions, shipbuilding and marine systems, and information systems and technologies.

Major products include Virginia-class nuclear-powered submarine and Ohio class replacement, Arleigh Burke-class Aegis, Abrams M1A2 tank, Stryker eight-wheeled assault vehicle, medium-caliber munitions and gun systems, tactical and strategic mission systems.

Some Wall Street analysts were disappointed by quarterly results from the companys information technology segment. Though most dont view the segments struggles as a product of a structurally impaired business, some may begin to question that thesis. However, most continue to see value in the companys Marine, Aerospace, Mission, and Land businesses and view the overall valuation as depressed.

General Dynamics stock investors receive a 2.95% dividend. RBC has a $164 price target, though the consensus estimate is up at $172.11. The last trade on Thursday hit the tape at $149.14.

Check Out These Cool Shots Of A Disassembled F-117 Nighthawk Arriving At Hill Aerospace Museum – The Aviationist

Two images of the F-117 being delivered to the Hill Aerospace Museum on Aug. 5, 2020. (All images: Hill Aerospace Museum).

As often reported here at The Aviationist, some F-117 Nighthawk stealth jets out of Tonopah Test Range continue to zip through the Nevada despite being officially retired in 2008. Some stories even claim the aircraft was actually re-introduced to combat in Syria and Iraq in 2017, although these claims have never been substantiated; however, the most recent sightings suggest that the aircraft continue to fly operational sorties, most probably playing the aggressor role for both training and testing duties.

Whatever, some F-117s have indeed been retired once for all. We spotted an F-117 fuselage being transported on a truck trailer on November 14, 2017. Last year, on Aug. 16, 2019 aviation expert and photographer Chris McGreevy spotted another fuselage being hauled by a truck along Columbia Way (Ave. M) near the joint military/civilian use Palmdale Regional Airport outside Palmdale, California. While we dont know where the first F-117 ended, we know that the second one was delivered to the Ronald Reagan Library in Simi Valley, California where it is currently on display.

A third F-117 is being prepared for public display: the Nighthawk that was delivered to the Hill Aerospace Museum, at Hill Air Force Base, Utah, on Aug. 5, 2020.

The official FB account of the museum shared the news that the aircraft had just arrived from Tonopah where the airframe was demilitarized. The Hill Aerospace Museum shared also some really interesting shots of their new F-117 that you can find in this post.

As the other F-117, the Nighthawk was hauled on a flatbed truck without its wings and vertical stabilizers and other parts that will be attached by the Hill Aerospace Museum. The aircraft, whose original coating has been removed as it may still pose a security as well as a health risk, will also get its iconic overall black paint job so that it can be put on display in the Lindquist Stewart Gallery next week.

Noteworthy, the other F-117, the one at the Ronald Reagan Library in Simi Valley, California, had been prepared for display by Lockheed Martin as part of Operation Nighthawk Landing that saw the aircraft (#803/82-0803) being reconfigured and painted at Skunk Works in Palmdale, California.

H/T Al Clark for the heads-up!
