Sophia Edelstein TEDxYouth@TheSchool 11/17/12 tedxyouth.theschool.columbia.edu Sophia Edelstein is a senior at The Dalton School. She is passionate about developing scientific research that helps tackle large global issues. While traveling in Colombia and Mexico, two impoverished countries with an abundance of sunlight, Sophia realized that despite the enthusiasm surrounding solar energy, the people who needed solar energy the most could not afford the high cost per watt. Sophia has been developing a new kind of solar battery modeled after the system used to create energy, ATP, in our bodies. Currently, Sophia is a research intern at a pharmacology lab at Weill Cornell Medical School where she has been working on her independent bioengineering project. Previously, Sophia interned at Carnegie Hill Radiology where she co-authored a scientific paper on cardiac dyssynchrony in patients with left bundle branch block. Sophia is a recipient of the 2012 Child Mind Institute Rising Scientist Award. In thespirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to ...From:TEDxYouthViews:30 0ratingsTime:05:24More inEducation
