This Atheist Is Going Vegetarian | Andrew Hall – Patheos

Once upon a time, I ate meat. Even though Im an atheist Five Guys cheeseburgers answered my prayers. Tasty Burger was my church. Kentucky Fried Chicken my Messiah.

Those days are behind me.

I have decided to be a vegetarian. Its been something I was thinking about for a few months. And Id like to say I made two columns and wrote out the pros and cons of never eating meat again. However, that was not the case. You see, my decision is based on my heart and not my head.

It boils down to the ethics of meat-eating. I came to realize I couldnt be complicit with the infliction of misery on my fellow animals.

The famous evolutionary biologist and atheist Richard Dawkins shaped my opinion and helped to make the move to vegetarianism.

He discussed the matter with philosopher Peter Singer and this is what Professor Dawkins had to say:

It implies that all of us who are eating meat, including me, are in a very difficult moral position. What I am doing is going along with the fact that I live in a society where meat eating is accepted as the norm and it requires a level of social courage, which I havent yet produced, to break out of that. Its a little bit like the position which anybody, not everybody but many people, would have been in a couple of hundreds of years ago over slavery, where lots of people felt kind of morally uneasy about slavery but went along with it, because the whole economy of the south depended upon slavery. Of course none of us like the idea of slavery but you cant seriously consider doing away with it because the whole economy would collapse I find myself in something like that situation. I think what Id really like to see would be a mass consciousness raising movement so that we all become vegetarian and then it would be so much easier for those of us who find it difficult to go along with it. And quite apart from that youd then have brilliant chefs making wonderful recipes.

Were certainly getting better, as Steven Pinker has said in his book The Better Angels of Our Nature, and Michael Shermer in his book on The Moral Arc, so were changing a lot and its sort of a fairly obvious thing to do to look in the future and say What will our future descendants think when they look back at us the way we look back at our slave-owning ancestors with horror? What will our descendants look back in our time?

And I think the obvious candidate would be the way we treat nonhuman animals. My view would be that we want to avoid suffering; therefore the criteria would be Can this creature suffer? This is the criteria that Jeremy Bentham the great moral philosopher laid out: Can they suffer? Theres every reason to think that mammals, at least and probably many more, can suffer perhaps as much as we can pain.

Ive considered the possibility of eating free-range meat. Those animals supposedly are living full lives up until the time theyre slaughtered. And its obvious the moral issues of eating factory-farmed animals and free-range ones are quite different. The former is simple torture while the latter isnt.

As I mentioned earlier this is a case of this atheist listening to his heart. And it is telling me I dont feel comfortable with being responsible for the death of an animal just because I want a burger.

My girlfriend was a vegetarian for a number of years. Shes also joining me on my meatless diet. Im fortunate and thankful for that. Any major behavioral change is difficult and getting support can be the difference between being successful and failing.

I know Im not changing the world by abstaining from meat. This is just a way for me to light a candle while screaming at the darkness.

10 Vegetarians Tell Us How They Really Feel About Impossible Burgers and Beyond – Chowhound

In May 2020, Impossible Foods and Beyond Meat saw a spike in demand as the COVID-19 pandemic slowed production of the beef and pork industries. Most famous for their burger alternatives, these products are part of a food category known as meat analogueplant-based products designed to imitate meatwhich explains why a demand was created when actual meat was in shorter supply. But it also begs the question: are Impossible and Beyond Burgers really intended, or suitable, for vegetarians?

This issue came to light lately when I was dining with a longtime vegetarian friend, Ali Ryan. She snapped a picture of the menu of the pub where we were eating to add to her growing catalog of restaurants that have recently replaced their more traditional veggie burger options with an Impossible or Beyond burger.

For someone who has been a vegetarian either their whole life or the majority of their life, there is simply no desire for the taste of meat. If anything, there is an aversion, says Ryan. Replacing a true veggie burgersomething hearty and palatable to a vegetarian dressed up and served in a bunwith an imitation beef burger is effectively taking away an option for a vegetarian, and adding one for a meat eater entertaining the idea of meatless Mondays.

As a lifelong omnivore whod recently tasted an Impossible burger, I could see her point. Had I not known what I was eating, Id have found it to be an underwhelming, but acceptable hamburger. Do other vegetarians feel this way, I wondered? Naturally, no tidy consensus was to be found, not all vegetarians being alike in preferences or reasons for becoming one, but those queried had strong opinions, and many interesting issues were raised.

I spoke to about 10 vegans and vegetarians with a wide range of timelines in their plant-based journeys, wondering whether there was a neat split on the Impossible issue between those who had been accustomed to eating meat for some significant portion of their life, and those that were lifelong vegetarians. No such clear lines were drawn, however, with answers ranging from never tried them, to I hate themnot my jam at all, to Impossible is next fucking level.

While tastes werent entirely split among lifelong versus recent vegetarians, something I noticed was that those who had already green-lighted Boca burgersanother soy-based meat analoguewere more likely to find Impossible and Beyond products agreeable, given that they felt them a vast improvement upon Boca in both flavor and texture.

It may be a matter of what qualifies as a veggie burger. Many I spoke to cited a strong preference for other kinds of vegetable, legume, or grain-based patties with intentional flavors that didnt mimic meat or even include a smoky char to imitate a grill.

Karly Szczepkowski says, I prefer a veggie burger: black bean, mushroom, falafel. They all taste so different from each other than I never think its just a burger! Amy Pagett concurs, Places like Trader Joes started carrying veggie burgers with Indian flavors, Mexican, whatever. And all this is awesome for people like me.

One of the early talking points of the Impossible burger was that it has a bleeding effect, created by a compound found in soybeans called leghemoglobin. Like animal protein, it is rich in iron and has a blood-red color that can give the Impossible burger a look akin to a rare hamburger. Beyondwhich is based on pea proteingets its color from beets, but to the same effect.

This is, understandably, off-putting for those whose choice to become vegetarian is rooted in animal rights, all the more so when the Impossible burger makes it hard to tell the difference. Says Heather Nessinger, a vegetarian of about seven years: I find it to be very real in taste and texture, which can be confusing to me, and I often find myself checking it to make sure its not a real burger!

For those whose relationship with meat ended only recently, however, whether for health, animal, or environmental concerns, its very meatiness can also be a treat: I think these products are amazing and delicious but should be treated like a cheat day, says Rose Bruno Bailey, a lifelong omnivore whose vegetarian journey started within the last couple of years.

Baileys point about a cheat day brings up another factor, though. Many queried spoke to the fact that Impossible or Beyond burgers went against the grain of a healthy, whole food diet, vegetarian or otherwise, considering their very processed nature. Packing about as much fat as a traditional beef burger, a Beyond or Impossible burger has an ingredient list of about 20 items, whereas a traditional hamburger patty only has one: beef.

Vegetarianism isnt always synonymous with healthy eating, and there are plenty of vegetarian junk food aficionados, but those who ascribed to a more whole-food based approach pointed out the staggering nutrition stats of the beef alternatives: They may be marginally better for you than a beef hamburger, but they are in no way filling your body with good fuel, says Pagett.

This is the one element in which everyone I heard from agreed. If these sort of meat alternatives get more people on board to the cause, then their very existence is great, personal preference notwithstanding.

From Kale Walch of The Herbivorous Butcher: Its a very exciting time to be in the plant-based food industry. Its really inspiring to see large companies like Beyond and Impossible have such a big impact on fast food, the food service industry, things like that. In the grand scheme of things, theyre doing a lot of good for the animals. Vegan chef Lemel Durrah concurs, especially on the fast food element, where in the case of some merchants a veggie protein option never before existed: I think that both brands have made great contributions to the plant-based foods movement. They both have made an impact in the fast food industry adding their products to menus across the country.

But Ian Ljungquist presses the point, even while liking both products, of who they are actually intended for: I have absolutely no problem with products attempting to taste like meat. It brings more people to the vegetarian table. The one thing most people say in response to finding out I have been a veggie for so long is that they generally agree that factory farming is gross and bad on many levels, but they could never live without the taste of meat. These products are going after people like that, not necessarily people like me.

Put it on your menu in addition to a veggie burger, not instead of one, pleads Ryan, to New York restaurants that have recently taken on the Impossible or Beyond.

Whether this is a national issue or just a regional one is still early days, as Pagett, reporting from Michigan, hasnt necessarily noticed this trend: Sometimes I do see the Impossible-type burger now as a replacement for a veggie burger, but it seems like its usually the types of places that really only had that Morningstar on the menu anyway. Most of the smaller, mom-and-pop types are still making their own yummy creations. Or at least the places I go.

Others share these same concerns, whether or not theyve noticed the sand shifting yet: That is my big fear, says Szczepkowski. I prefer veggie burgers, and dont want to eat meat. And places are replacing delicious veggie burgers, perhaps because they are harder to make or source? Fake meat burgers arent for us veg-enthusiasts.

While a variety of viewpoints were expressed on the suitability of Beyond and Impossible products for vegetarians, when I first posed this question to people, many responded as though I was asking which they preferred, favor-wise. And so I leave you with a hardcore vegetarian, hard rock analogy, care of Ljungquist: Impossible is Slayer, Beyond is Anthrax. If the only tape on a road trip is Anthrax, itll do fine. But if Slayer is available, Anthrax barely ever makes it into the rotation.

The 8 Types of Vegetarians All Get Down With Plant-Based Eating in Different Ways – Well+Good

Those who dont eat meat often deem themselves a vegetarian, period. The end. Take a deeper dive into history and current dietary practices, however, and youll soon find that there are actually many types of vegetarians with varying rules about what animals and animal products (if any) earn a spot on their plates. Its complicated to say the least, but each iteration of plant-inclusive eating banks its own benefits for health and the environment.

Skipping out on meat and animal-derived ingredients has a culturally-diverse history. The practice of ahmisa or nonviolence has long characterized the diets of Indian religions such as Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. Plant-based diets are deeply embedded in many African culinary traditionsparticularly in Zimbabwean and Ghanaian cuisine. America has its own complicated history of skipping out on animal agriculture in the name of health, ethics, and even remedying climate anxiety. In fact, nearly every continent has its own connection with eating a diet composed of mostly plants.

With such an abundance of rich and varied lineages of vegetarianism, it makes sense that many degrees of plant-based eating are now practiced globally. So that you can get to know them all, dietitian Dana Hunnes, RD, PhD, adjunct professor at the University of California Los Angeles, breaks down the eight most common types of vegetarians below.

Vegetarians are people who do not eat meat, but may be flexible in terms of eating eggs, milk, cheese, and other products that may be derived from animals, says Dr. Hunnes. They simply do not eat meat. Those other products may include things like honey, gelatin, collagen, or white sugar.

As their name suggests, flexitarians are flexible (like, the splits flexible) when it comes to diet. Flexitarians are people who eat mostly vegetarian but who may be more willing to eat animal products sometimes, says Dr. Hunnes. For example, they may okay a steak thats grass-fed or opt-in to pasture-raised eggs. The Planetary Health Diet is an offshoot of flexitarianism, too.

3. Pescatarians

Pescatarians are vegetarians who will eat fish and fish products, and who may or may not also eat dairy or eggs, says Dr. Hunnes. People often choose the pescatarian diet as a starting point for eating less animal-derived protein, then slowly phase out fish as well.

A more specific type of vegetarian is the lacto-ovo-vegetarian who eats both eggs and dairy products, but says no to poultry, fish, red meat, and other animals. This is the fancy Latin name for what most people mean when they call themselves vegetarians.

Yes to milk, cheese, and yogurt! No to eggs, say the lacto-vegetarians.

I will eat eggs, but no dairy products or other animal products! None of that, say the ovo-vegetarians.

Vegans do not eat any animal products whatsoeverno eggs, no dairy, no fish oils, and no derived products either, says Dr. Hunnes. Vegans will also abstain from eating things like honey, gelatin, collagen, and even white sugar, as well as using animal products in other parts of their lives, from cosmetics to clothing.

Raw vegans do not eat cooked foods, period, as a testament to what human beings would eat in the wild without access to fire. These raw eaters will only consume unprocessed plant foods that have not been heated above 115 degrees Fahrenheit. This type of diet is often met with a lot of scientific scrutiny because many vegetableslike asparagus, tomatoes, and sweet potatoes, for exampleactually become more nutritionally valuable when you cook them up before nomming them down. (Plus, seems really difficult and limiting to practice.)

Health-wise, most people would be much healthier to eat a plant-based diet, including vegetarian or vegan, says Dr. Hunnes. Most diseases that people die from in the United States are chronic nutrition-related diseases like cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. Eating a standard American diet puts you at four times the risk of dying from cancer than eating a vegan, whole-foods diet. In addition, vegetarian diets focusing primarily on whole, non-processed foods encourage you to eat a diverse array of plants, which researchers have linked with better overall gut health.

2. All types of vegetarians put less strain on the environment

A 2016 study published in The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United Statesdemonstrated that switching from a traditional American diet to a vegetarian or vegan diet could result in a 29 to 70 percent drop in greenhouse gas emissions. From an environmental standpoint, eating a vegetarian or better vegan diet is one of the most impactful things you can do to lower your personal greenhouse gas emissions and protect the environment, says Dr. Hunnes. Eating fewer animal products can also significantly decrease the amount of water your diet requires and diminish the amount of land it takes to produce your food.

There is no question that taking animal foods off the table is without a doubt far more ethical, says Dr. Hunnes. 99 percent of the beef eaten in the U.S. live in CAFOs where they are confined and have no semblance of natural behaviors. The vast majority of dairy cows are forcibly impregnated so they will produce milk after birth and their babies are taken from them immediately after birth. Sadly, these just scratch the surface of the atrocities that occur in big farming that may concern you if you are interested in what happens before your food reaches your fridge.

However, it should be noted that all farmingfrom meat production to plant agriculturehas some serious work to do when it comes to labor ethics, particularly in the treatment of immigrant farm workers. So dont assume that your vegan diet is inherently cruelty-free without exploring and thinking about the treatment of the humans who grow, pick, and package your food.

The 2 most common FAQs people usually have before going vegetarian

This is a BIG question for prospective vegetarians and vegans. Protein has many functions in your body, including building your hair and nails, repairing your bodys tissue, and helping you digest your food. So, of course, you want to do everything your power to hit your daily quota (about 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight, which rings in at around 54 to 68 grams per day for a 150-pound woman). While meat and meat products are the clear front-runners in bang for your protein buck, with a little bit of craftiness, you can hit that number within the boundaries of vegetarianism. Youll want to reach for high-protein plants like soy, pistachios, quinoa, hemp, seeds, and chia seeds. This recipe, for example, proves that a high-protein meal isnt mutually exclusive from a vegan one.

2. What about B12? Ive heard that vegetarians and vegans struggle to get enough.

Also true! Vitamin B12 is essential for lifting your mood and keeping you keyed up energy-wise, and its found almost exclusively in animals and animal products. You dont have to sacrifice those benefits with a vegetarian or vegan diet, however. The good news is that you can purchase B12 vitamins to help fill this gap, or if youre only a vegetarian, you can make a point of eating milk and eggs to fulfill this need. Problem solved.

To keep things short and sweet, the various types of vegetarians are indicative of the long history attached to abstaining from excluding certain animals or animal products from your diet. However, any plant-forward eating plan has the potential to benefit your health and that of the environment. Before you dive right in, youll likely want to strategize how to stock your pantry so you can consume enough protein and B12, then you can test out what style of vegetarianism suits you best. Folding@home(FAH) is a distributed computing project that uses computational modeling to simulate protein structure, stability, and shape (how it folds). These simulationshelp to advancedrug discoveries and cures for diseases linked to protein dynamics within human cells. The FAH software crowdsources its distributed compute platform allowing anyone to contribute by donating unused computational resources from personal computers, laptops, and cloud servers.

In this post, I walk through deploying EC2 Spot Instances, optimized for the latest Folding@home client software. I describe how to be flexible across a combination ofGPU-optimized Amazon EC2 Spot Instances configured in anEC2 Auto Scaling group. The Auto Scaling group handles launching and maintaining a desiredcapacity, and automatically request resources to replace any that are interrupted or manually shut down.

Spot Instances are spare EC2 capacity available at up to a 90% discount compared to On-Demand Instance prices. The only difference between On-Demand Instance and Spot Instances is that Spot Instances can be interrupted by EC2 with two minutes of notification when EC2 needs the capacity back. This makes Spot Instances a great fit for stateless, fault-tolerant workloads like big data, containers, batch processing, AI/ML training, CI/CD and test/dev. In addition to being flexible across instance types, another best practice for using Spot Instances effectively is to select the appropriate allocation strategy. Once edited and saved to a location you can easily find later, in the next section youll learn how to upload the template in the AWS CloudFormation console.

Next, log into the AWS Management Console, choose the Region you want to run the solution in, then navigate to AWSCloudFormation to launch the template.

In the AWS CloudFormation console, click on Create stack. Upload the template we just configured and click on Next to specify stack details.

Enter a stack name and adjust the capacity parameters as needed. In this example I set the desiredCapacity and minSize at 2 to handle protein folding jobs assigned to the client, and then the maxSize set at 12. Setting your maxSize to 12 ensures you have capacity for larger jobs that get assigned. These parameters can be adjusted based on your desired capacity.

If breaking out usage and cost data is required,, you can optionally add additional configurations like tags, permissions, stack policies, rollback options, and more advanced options in the next stack configuration step. Click Next to Review and then create the stack.

Under the Events tab, you can see the status of the AWS resources being created. When the status is CREATE_COMPLETE (approx. 35 minutes), the environment with Folding@home is installed and ready.Once the stack is created, the GPU instances will begin protein simulation.

The AWS CloudFormation template creates a log group fahlog that each of the instances send log data to. This allows you to visualize the protein folding progress in near real time via the Amazon CloudWatch console. To see the log data, navigate over to the Resources tab and click on the cloudWatchLogGroup link for fahlog. Alternatively, you can navigate to the Amazon CloudWatch console and choose fahlog under log groups.Note: Sometimes it takes a bit of time for Folding@Home Work Units (WU) to be downloaded in the instances and allocate all the available GPUs.

In the CloudWatch console, check out the Insights feature in the left navigation menu to see analytics for your protein folding logs. Select fahlog in the search box and run the default query that is provided for you in the query editor window to see your protein folding results.

Another thing you can do is create a dashboard in the CloudWatch console to automatically refresh based on the time intervals you set. Under Dashboardsin the left navigation bar, I was able to quickly create a few widgets to visualize CPU utilization, network in/out, and protein folding completed steps. This is a nifty tool that, with a little more time, you could configure more detailed metrics like cost per fold, and GPU monitoring.

You can let this run as long as you want to contribute to this project. When youre ready to stop, AWS CloudFormation gives us the option to delete the stack and resources created.On the AWS CloudFormation console, select the stack, and select delete.When you delete a stack, you delete the stack and all of its resources.

In this post, I shared how to launch a cluster of EC2 GPU-optimized Spot Instances to aid in Folding@homes protein dynamics research that could lead to therapeutics for infectious diseases. I leveraged Spot best practices by being flexible with instance selections across multiple families, sizes, and Availability Zones, and by choosing the capacity-optimized allocation strategy to ensure our cluster scales optimally and securely. Now you are ready to donate compute capacity with Spot Instances to aid disease research efforts on Folding@home.

Folding@home is currently based at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, under the directorship of Dr. Greg Bowman. BEING Master of a Cambridge College has its highlights, one of the most pleasurable of which is meeting our benefactors.

My college, Gonville and Caius, has thousands of benefactors, but only the most eminent are commemorated in stone on the Benefactors Wall inside the Great Gate that looks onto the busiest part of Cambridge.

The first name on the wall is the co-founder Edmund Gonville (1348) and the 30th is Jeffrey Cheah, honorary fellow of the college.

One of the greatest Jewish rabbis was Maimonides (1138-1204). As well as codifying religious law, he was also a philosopher, and his day job was being a medical doctor.

Indeed, he was physician to the great Sultan Saladin, and much admired by Islamic scientists and scholars.

He formulated Eight Levels of Giving applied to charitable donations. The highest level is: Giving an interest-free loan to a person in need; forming a partnership with a person in need; giving a grant to a person in need; finding a job for a person in need; so long as that loan, grant, partnership or job results in the person no longer living by relying upon others.

This highest level of philanthropy encompasses precisely what Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah through his Foundation does.

Grants are awarded to scientists and educators to enable them to carry out their groundbreaking research and scholarship, and it works in partnership with them; this also financially supports young people massively so they will be able to undertake higher education, have jobs and contribute to Malaysian society.

To cap it all, medicine is a central part of those activities. Maimonides really would have approved.

It is for those reasons I have enjoyed so much my relationship with Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah and the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation we are working together in a partnership that improves medicine, science and education in my college and university, and in our partners institutions in Malaysia for the benefit of the world.

I take pride in being an Honorary Jeffrey Cheah Distinguished Professor so I can continue being a small part in this great partnership.

Crises bring out the worst and the best in society. Some politicians who have spent their careers disregarding the truth have discovered to their cost and the even greater cost of their populations that viruses take no notice of lies.

Crazy groups protest against vaccinations and even claim that Bill Gates, who is a fine philanthropist, is putting microchips in vaccines, and 5G networks spread the virus.

But so many people in every walk of life are doing their bit, from delivery drivers dropping off goods to those isolating at home to people sewing masks and protective gear. Much kindness is shining through.

Low paid healthcare workers are risking their lives caring for the sick and elderly.

Doctors, scientists and engineers in global collaboration have risen as one to the task of tackling the pandemic.

Developments in biotechnology and diagnostics that have sprung from fundamental work on DNA, proteins and molecular and cellular biology are being employed in force.

Scientists are challenging ideas and concepts as new facts are discovered in order to make progress.

I take pride in being a scientist and being part of the scientific movement that has led to the breakthroughs that are allowing the rapid response to the crisis.

Experimental scientists, however, need considerable support and infrastructure in order to carry out this critical research. Much of it is provided by governments, but it is never enough and sometimes too driven by politics or not flexible enough for unpredictable innovation.

Philanthropic individuals and organisations have for long catalysed scientific progress by funding individuals and laboratories and hospitals.

Long live philanthropy and those, like Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah, who selflessly practise it in the interests of mankind.

In August 2020, Fersht was awarded the Copley Medal of the Royal Society, the most prestigious science prize in the UK and the worlds oldest, dating back to 1731. The medal is awarded for outstanding achievements in research in any branch of science. Previous winners encompass the most famous scientists of the last few centuries including Joseph Priestly, Benjamin Franklin, Charles Darwin, Dmitri Mendeleev, Albert Einstein Niels Bohr as well as Francis Crick and Stephen Hawking, both Fellows of Gonville and Caius.

With interests spanning chemistry and biology, he has been appointed to three of the most prestigious societies in the US Foreign Associate of the National Academy of Sciences (USA); Honorary Foreign Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences; and Foreign Honorary Member of the American Philosophical Society.

He is a member of prestigious UK and European academies Fellow of the Royal Society of London; Member of European Molecular Biology Organisation (EMBO); and Member of Academia Europaea. On top of co-founding three biotech companies, Fersht is also the recipient of many global recognitions including the Gabor Medal of the Royal Society for Molecular Biology, its Davy Medal for Chemistry, and Royal Medal for his work on protein folding.

Both Fersht and Nobel Prize winner Sir Gregory Winter FRS, his collaborator, were knighted for their work on protein engineering.

Lapetus Solutions working on biometrics-based selfie face analytics for aging – Biometric Update

AI company Lapetus Solutions has been developing analytical solutions for the insurance market that leverage biometric facial recognition with selfies to treat the face as a biomarker of human aging, writes Longevity Technology.

Professor at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, Karl Ricanek holds a PhD in computer science and has specifically focused on facial analytics. He founded Lapetus Solutions in 2015 together with Jay Olshansky, professor of gerontology at the University of Illinois at Chicago and founder of the field of biodemography.

Ricanek explained in an interview with Longevity Technology that just 10 years ago, insurance companies created life expectancy models based on blood analysis. In a meeting with life insurance companies, Ricanek heard Olshanskys presentation on people who are biologically aging slower and the indicators on the face that present themselves for long-lived individuals.

Its about understanding your origins, your genes, those things that are just innate in you, Ricanek told the publication. So, it was natural that we would look at the components of the face to understand biological age, or what were now calling in our product, our senescing rate. This is the rate at which youre aging, and it can be faster or slower, or normal. So, if you are senescing slower than normal, it basically means that you are likely to live longer than average. If youre senescing faster, then youre likely to live shorter.

Next year, Lapetus plans to release Janus, a facial analysis product that life insurance companies can integrate with their online application process. The company claims a medical selfie is all it takes for the system to accurately detect gender, age and BMI in less than two minutes. Another feature it is working on is susceptibility to chronic diseases.

After working in AI for some 30 years, Ricanek says that Only now are we getting to the point where the artificial intelligence, the hardware, and the ability to scale it up using cloud technology, has presented itself in such a way that we can solve these really challenging and, before now, just intractable problems.

Lapetus focus areas are longevity risk, life expectancy, medical underwriting and wealth management. Future plans include adding sensory analytics and saliva-based genetic testing, while researching other innovation related to aging measurement.

When you blend all of these things together, we can give you a more detailed picture of your life expectancy and your potential for chronic disease, says Ricanek. We havent done the blending part yet but thatll come next year.

With roughly eight or nine million secured, Lapetus has received support from a number of investors including SixThirtyandPlug and Play.

Be vocal about local are the new buzzwords in Indian economic circles, propagated by populist Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alluding to a resurgence of its manufacturing sector, congruent to a previous reform agenda of Make in India. The global backlash against China as the malefactor of the novel coronavirus pandemic has reached a crescendo. Political leaders from both sides of the Atlantic have consensus on de-risking economies from monopoly dependence on China, touted as the factory of the world. An indignant Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has earmarked 245 billion Yen to assist infrastructure spending for those Japanese firms, exhorting to shift production facilities out of China. Can India ride the crest of this global anti-China sentiment, and use this opportunity to revamp local manufacturing and attract greenfield investments from multi-national companies?

The challenges: Pitfalls in the education and skill development ecosystem

Notwithstanding the lack of integrated infrastructure or active labour market legislations, the singular determinant of Indian emergence as the global manufacturing hub will be a skilled workforce. But it is also the current lacunae, which impedes this goal. Of the 450 million labor force, more than 50 percent are illiterate or only possess primary education, 50 million with secondary education, 7.9 million underwent vocational training, and a mere 10.5 million fall under the technically qualified gambit. Industry statistics reveal that an alarmingly high 83 percent of graduates are unemployable owing to the dearth of essential technical and management skills required to survive in the 21st century, new-age industries.

Indias education system has traditionally been based on rote learning. Post-independence India established, across the country, polytechnics, industrial training institutes (ITI), government engineering colleges, and institutes of higher learning to redirect the nation to a path of industrialisation and modernization. Their curriculum is predominantly input focused and there is little or no emphasis on experiential learning except for a few institutes like Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Indian Institute of Management (IIMs), Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) and Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT).

The Annual Employability Survey 2019, done by an employability assessment company Aspiring Minds revealed that more than 95 percent of engineers are unfit for Information Technology jobs, stirring a controversy. These findings were corroborated by a veteran industry leader, CP Gurnani, CEO of Tech Mahindra, an Indian IT major that top IT companies in India hire only 6 percent of all engineering graduates. A decade-old McKinsey report had tabled similar findings that only a quarter of the graduating Indian technocrats have employability quotient, an indication of the retrogression in Indian technical education not commensurate with rapid technological advances.

The solution: Productivity-based skill development

Any sustainable educational goal should inevitably involve industry experts with sector-specific knowledge, from formulating curriculum to providing a roadmap for mandatory skills and capabilities warranted in creating a knowledge society and an innovation economy. The German dual skilling model for developing sustainable and state-of-the-art Vocational Education Training (VET) is worthy of emulation in India. Under this hugely successful program, students receive theory and conceptual lessons in the classroom for a week, followed by an apprenticeship in manufacturing facilities of companies, the week after, and alternating until successful completion of the courses.

This can be bolstered by nation-wide collaborative initiatives between the government and Indian industries should be rolled out for upgrading and redeployment of existing skills, enabling closure of skill gaps. Such large to medium and small industries participation in this synergetic program should be incentivised by corporate tax rebates, access to low-cost capital, re-classification of loans as subordinated debt, etc.

The public-private participation between government and industry will mitigate budget, resource, and time constraints, often a deterrent to social programs in emerging economies. An entry-level accountant could acquire basic conceptual and functional skills within a year, doing an accounting software course like Tally rather than enrolling in a three-year undergraduate commerce course. Similarly, a welder who had completed a two-year ITI course exposed to theories on different types of welding techniques might be grossly unemployable in an automobile production line welding job, that requires to perform 9 precision welds in an hour. If the German model is applied here, a student receives on-the-job training with an automobile manufacturer, as an apprentice for 45 days and become readily fit for employment.

Skilled workforce and foreign investments

Internationalisation of production has expanded opportunities for knowledge spillovers from the industrial world to developing markets. Unique, cutting edge skill sets are inevitable to compete and emerge as winners in New-Age economies dominated by semiconductors, fintech, artificial intelligence, robotics, and machine learning. The flow of technology and capital from the developed world to the developing world will rise exponentially, if the emerging market of India can offer highly skilled labor force, reciprocally, for setting up Greenfield investments or Brownfield acquisitions by MNCs.

In India, creating a highly differentiated ecosystem, skilled in producing a wide basket of goods that is technology-intensive, requiring superior learning and therefore not easily replicated, is critical to income leveling, wealth creation, and economic growth in the future. When MNCs strategically unbundle non-core functions in the service sector in developed markets and decide on outsourcing to competitive third world destinations, tapping into the availability of cost-effective, top-quality talent pool is always the primary criteria. Service sector contribution as a percentage of GDP is steadily increasing in almost all emerging markets, emulating the pattern in developed, free markets of the West. Complexity and income have positive correlations.

Re-imagining Indian education and the role of R&D

Annually, more than 12 million new job seekers enter the Indian labour market but create employment for only 5 million-odd jobs, and the major lacunae are unemployability due to skill gaps. Structural and institutional reforms are long overdue in the Indian educational sector. India is still home to over 600,000 villages and providing free access to qualitative primary and secondary education in rural heartlands is critical in empowering rural population (especially women folk), generating capacity employment, resuscitating rural demand, poverty alleviation, and edifying rural infrastructure in MSME sectors.

Ever since the First Industrialisation Revolution, if there is one input that is fundamental to improving the quality and longevity of human life on earth, indubitably, it is Research. Innovations and discoveries which, engendered quantum advancements in transport, telecommunications, medicine, and technology, that had transformed the world into a Global Village and Global Audience were consummated on establishing sophisticated R&D facilities in developed economies. It has created a stellar global fraternity of scientists.

A far-sighted and symbiotic public-private participation in the R&D sector, harnessing the powers of Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Robotics, and Deep Learning should receive legislative support as part of the Skilling India initiative. Such synergetic partnerships have the potential to catapult India into a global leader in genome engineering, pharmaceuticals, connected devices in pro-active healthcare management, low-cost online education, and integration of virtual universities, fintech, clean renewable energy solutions, manufacturing, and agriculture.

The vision of the Indian Government, encompassing slogans such as Make in India, Skill India, Start Up India, Digital India to transform its socio-economic landscape by capitalising on its demographic dividend and assume global leadership in 21st century is contingent on a highly skilled and competent workforce. Creating that leadership capital is the order of the present that defines the future of India.

From Parrots to Black Cowboys, Walter Thompson-Hernndez is Telling the Stories That Matter – Sports Illustrated

Los Angeles is beaches, eclectic food and sunshine kissed boulevards. But its also not. Its a crime to whittle any city down to its most superficial assets and forget the good stuff that makes it pulse with vitality, its heart.

Walter Thompson-Hernndez is a reporter dedicated to telling stories. Hes done just that over several years for such publications as the New York Times, NPR, Fusion, the BBC and the Guardian.

With the support of LAist Studios, Thompson-Hernndez recently published his newest storytelling venture, a podcast series appropriately titled California Love.

Inspired by the 1995 2Pac song by the same name, he explains in the show's prologue episode that Pac and Dr. Dres lyrics and deliciously addictive beat were revelatory for a young kid.

Dres voice eventually listed cities and landmarks throughout the state; it made the song feel not just flashy and cool but also informative, Thompson-Hernndez said in the shows opening salvo. It felt like a social studies class that I always wanted but never had.

The 32-year-old is holding class in this love letter to the city. A town in which he was raised, cutting his teeth on avenues that arent always represented in mainstream media or in the pages published on this here Internet.

Theres a kinship of telling stories that are grossly underrepresented that drew me to the podcast.

One of the more engrossing episodes thus far is that of the Compton Cowboys. Familiar to so many out there but unfortunately foreign to far more, they recently joined the chorus of protests that took place in the wake of George Floyd's death.

The group remains a beacon of calm and healing for a community that is often without either, abeloved contingent of horse-riding African-Americans who hail from a part of Los Angeles more renowned for hip-hop shoutouts than bucolic ranch living.

Thompson-Hernndez covered the community back in 2018 for the N.Y. Times and again in his book The Compton Cowboys: The New Generation of Cowboys in America's Urban Heartland, for which he won the Whiting Creative Non-Fiction Award in 2019.

The Cowboys ride again, making an appearance in the Aug. 6 episode of the podcast. Its a refreshingly deep dive into a group and a location that remains an important source of peace.

The ranch isnt just a ranch, Thompson-Hernndez explains in the episode. Beneath all the jokes and the shit-talking, theres something more profound taking place that can maybe help Compton heal from some of its wounds.

Its a refreshing but harrowing narrative into a group that has found their slice of heaven but also struggles to maintain its longevity.

Ranch owner and Cowboy leader Randy Hook doesnt hold back as he expresses the stress and dismay at keeping the ranch and the cowboys riding into the next generation, a generation that is already hooked.

One of the parting shots is from a boy named Keenan who says with bursting energy, When youre on top of the horse, its like the world just chills out for a minute. Its like youre in control of something.

Stories matter. From book to movie to podcast, the human experience deepens when you walk a mile in anothers boots. Empathy is in short supply these days, and Thompson-Hernndez has us going back to the well.

The sports world will certainly love the episode dedicated to Kobe Bryant and the impact he had on a budding writer.

My favorite in the series has to be Parrots: A Parable. Los Angeles is a city made up of natives and transplants. So many of the latter came to the City of Angeles of their own accord, seeking vitality in a bustling city.

But some, like the ubiquitous and often chatty parrot, came here without much of a say.

Thompson-Hernndez stretches his pen in a story that not only explains how L.A. came to house this prolific bird but also addresses humanity's ability to cage our own kind, something that is especially salient in 2020 with an administration that has separated migrant children from their parents.

The show makes the connection seamlessly and without a heavy hand, delivered with a moving story you will carry with you long after the episodes conclusion.

California Love resonates and educates. And like a great song from the 90s, you cant get it out of your head.

On August 5, Drew Shindell, a professor of Earth science at Duke University, appeared before the House Committee on Oversight and Reform. Shindell is the lead author of the two most recent IPCC reports. He told the committee the latest study by his colleagues and NASA shows that Over the next 50 years, keeping to the 2 C pathway would prevent roughly 4.5 million premature deaths, and about 3.5 million hospitalizations and emergency room visits. He said many of these preventable deaths are tied to diseases resulting from poor air quality, including stroke, heart disease, and pulmonary diseases. The 2 C pathway refers to the guidelines adopted at the COP 22 climate conference in Paris in 2015 designed to prevent average global temperatures from rising more than 2 degrees Centigrade.

As Dave Roberts of Vox points out, Shindells testimony reveals that the effects of air pollution are roughly twice as bad as previously estimated. That is a bombshell in a sane world, it would be front page news across the country. But we do not live in a sane world. We live in a world dominated by a lunatic who wants to bring back incandescent light bulbs because LEDs make his skin look orange and to trash low-flow shower heads because his hair has to be perfect.

The air quality scientific community has hypothesized this for at least a decade, but research advances have let us quantify and confirm this notion, over and over, says Rebecca Saari, an air quality expert who teaches in civil and environmental engineering at the University of Waterloo. The air quality co-benefits are generally so valuable that they exceed the cost of climate action, often many times over. (emphasis added).

So lets see if we have this straight. Pollution from burning fossil fuels is making millions of people sick and many of them are dying prematurely as a result. The benefits of cleaning the air and making it safe to breathe would far outweigh the costs of doing so, and still we cannot find the political will to make that happen? It is enough to make a sentient person question whether humans are not, in fact, a form of environment-eating virus bent on destroying the only home they will ever have. That is the theory put forth in the movie The Matrix.

Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment; but you humans do not. Instead you multiply, and multiply, until every resource is consumed. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern a virus. How fitting that the world today is in the grip of just such a virus and yet we shrug our shoulders and wonder when things will get back to normal as if normal will somehow save us from ourselves.

The Shindell report says, The avoided deaths are valued at more than $37 trillion. The avoided health care spending due to reduced hospitalizations and emergency room visits exceeds $37 billion, and the increased labor productivity is valued at more than $75 billion. On average, this amounts to over $700 billion per year in benefits to the US from improved health and labor alone, far more than the cost of the energy transition.

Roberts writes, Scientists now know that exposure to smog (tiny, microscopic particulates) hurts prenatal and young brains. Even though they dont yet fully understand the biological mechanism, they know it reduces impulse control and degrades academic performance. Similarly, they know it hurts the kidneys, the spleen, even the nervous system.

Shindell adds. The well understood pathways, things like strokes, lower respiratory infections, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, only seem to capture about half the total. When you look at the [new] studies, you find that air pollution seems to affect almost every organ in the human body. About twice as many people die in total as die just from the pathways we understand. Weve been underestimating all along.

A recent study from the national academies of multiple countries, including the US, concludes, The scientific evidence is unequivocal: air pollution can harm health across the entire lifespan. It causes disease, disability and death, and impairs everyones quality of life. It damages lungs, hearts, brains, skin and other organs; it increases the risk of disease and disability, affecting virtually all systems in the human body.

What accounts for the latest study finding the effects of dirty air are twice as high as previously thought? Access to more data specifically information on 60 million Medicare patients. Such massive amounts of data allow researchers to control for socioeconomic status, temperature, hypertension and other existing conditions, says Shindell. You can convincingly demonstrate that correlation is in fact causal, because you can rule out essentially every other possibility.

The finding that the impacts of dirty air are twice what they were previously thought to be probably still underestimates the actual situation. On both air pollution and climate change, the study omitted many effects that are clearly present but cannot yet be reliably quantified. The true numbers are almost certainly higher, Dave Roberts writes.

And thats precisely where the so-called president of the United States and his cohort of deplorables have decided to attack the science. This group of fossil fuel industry apologists proposes to prohibit research based on randomized data because, you know, we need to be able to interrogate each and every one of the people in the survey to make sure they are not malingerers or immigrants or people of color or any of the other categories of people despised by Trump and his acolytes. They also want to exclude any secondary effects of air pollution from consideration, even thought those so-called co-benefits are by far the most significant when it comes to determining the total impact air pollution has on peoples health.

Dave Roberts concludes his remarks with these thoughts:

The extraordinary level of suffering humanity is currently experiencing from air pollution is not necessary for modernity; it could be reduced, at a cost well below the net social benefits, with clean energy technologies on hand..The millions of lives ended or degraded by fossil fuels every year are a choice (emphasis added). And when suffering on this scale, that is this brutally inequitable, becomes a choice, it enters the same ethical terrain as war, slavery, and genocide. The effects are more distributed over time and geography, as are the decision-making and the moral culpability, but the cumulative impact on human well-being on our longevity, health, learning, and happiness is comparable, and every bit as much worth fighting.

US policymakers have a chance to kick start an energy transition that could save 1.4 million American lives over the next 20 years, especially among the most vulnerable, even as it creates jobs and saves consumers money. As Shindell says, it would be unconscionable not to act on it.

As we at CleanTechnica often put it: Earth Justice = Social Justice = Racial Justice. This administration has not taken the actions needed to prevent 166,000 Americans from dying from COVID-19. What in the world makes anyone think they care a flying fig leaf about 1.4 million more unnecessary deaths over the next 20 years? They have shown absolutely no compassion for those afflicted so far. Instead, they plan to roll back pollution standards on mercury emissions from coal-powered generating plants, auto emission standards, and rules limiting how much climate killing methane fracking companies can spew into the atmosphere free of charge.

A seasoned criminal prosecutor could probably find grounds to charge most members of the current maladministration, industry lobbyists, and fossil fuel company heads with negligent homicide if not worse. Is that over the top? Perhaps, but when one considers the amount of harm being done deliberately to defenseless people who are innocent of any wrong doing, the idea may not be so far fetched. Perhaps they should be in the dock at the World Court in The Hague charged with crimes against humanity? You can form your own opinion on that subject.

What cannot be denied any longer is that burning fossil fuels is killing us and the planet that sustains us. At this point, nothing else matters. We must immediately find ways to stop making the burning of fossil fuels the basis of our economic system or perish. Make of that what you will.

With the movement restrictions easing gradually, India is striving to bounce back to normalcy. However, some uncertainties continue to exist. The economic rebound to the pre-COVID-19 levels is likely to be gradual as the rising number of infections, the intermittent regional lockdowns, social distancing norms, and safety concerns result in a vicious cycle of low demand and supply. According to a consumer survey by Deloitte, uncertainties around employment and financial anxieties have reduced the spending intent amongst Indian consumers on discretionary goods. Lower demand is expected to translate into constrained business investment in capital projects and delay in hiring.

Policymakers and businesses will require resilience to prepare in the months ahead to recover from this crisis. Five factors will be key in determining the pace and time of the recovery. The availability of treatment and vaccines will be the most important factor, and the sooner people have access to either of these, the quicker will be the economic revival. This is because the spread of the virus and its longevity are slowly leading to another contagionof caution and fear (the second factor). Caution amongst consumers may change their consumption behaviours and demand patterns, while businesses may modify business practices leading to rapid automation or business models, such as reshoring.

The third factor will be the intensity of the secondary impact of supply-chain disruptions spilling across industries and the financial sector. Initially, a few industries, such as hospitality and manufacturing, felt the immediate impact of the virus and the movement restrictions that followed. Possibilities of several outbreaks and prolonged pandemic may impact productivity, and capacity building across all industries, all of which may also lead to slower credit growth.

The strength of domestic consumer demand, the primary pillar to growth, will be the fourth factor. While rural demand may hold up for some time because of better rainfall and the governments support to provide employment opportunities in rural areas, the rapid spread of the infections in urban areas may keep the demand subdued. That said, the infection curve in larger urban areas (such as NCR and Mumbai) appears to be flattening and economic activity is expected to gather steam as these regions gradually open up. Simultaneously, global economic growth and trade will influence domestic demand as well. A coordinated effort to curb the infection spread will translate into a synchronised recovery across the world. However, there is less evidence suggesting harmonised efforts to curb the spread as different countries are at different stages of the infection.

Finally, the extent and effectiveness of the fiscal and monetary stimulus by the government will determine the human cost and economic disruption, as India strides towards a new normal on the other side of the pandemic. So far, the government has announced a wide range of health, tax, financial, business, and social measures and reforms to help people and businesses respond to COVID-19. Fresh measures aimed at improving infrastructure, regulations, and job opportunities will likely aid in a sustained recovery and rebuilding. In other words, government measures will be crucial in cushioning the pandemic impact on industries and economic activity.

The variations around these five factors will likely determine Indias economic growth for the next few years. This could range from a moderate economic impact with gradual recovery (most likely case) to severe economic damage with sluggish recovery (extreme worst case with low likelihood). We are optimistic about the outlook and assuming that the contagion is under control by the end of this year, consumer spending will quickly pick up pace due to strong pent-up demand. Private investment growth, which has been in the negative territory for over three quarters now, will recover after it picks up cues from a sustainable increase in demand. Under the most likely scenario, recovery is likely to gain momentum from the start of FY2022 after negative growth in FY2021.

A quick economic recovery will likely have a moderate impact across all industries and may lead to a relatively uniform revival, with a few bouncing back sooner than others. Once the recovery begins under the most likely scenario, prices may escalate faster. Pent-up demand backed by high government spending may cause demand to overshoot supply.

If the pandemic prolongs, essential goods segment of retail, the pharmaceutical industry, and the technology and communication industry will likely weather the storm in due course of time. However, the hospitality and banking industry may continue to see difficult times ahead. Industries must prepare themselves for uncertain times while hoping for the best.

Layoffs plague nonprofits some more troubled than others – Generocity

In the beginning, there were nonprofit agencies about 15,000 in the five-county region.

Then COVID-19 divided them into essential and nonessential organizations. On the necessary side, are the nonprofits that provide the basics that millions of Americans depend upon to survive. On the wrong side of the coronavirus tracks is the arts and cultural organizations whose offerings are deemed wonderful but dispensable in this time of pandemic.

And that inequality has begat escalating unemployment.

Russell Johnson, president and CEO of HealthSpark Foundation, said that its too early to tell the impact statistically but anecdotally there have been many layoffs. We are carefully monitoring this question. Some agencies have laid-off staff. Some were forced to close such as child care centers, senior centers, YMCAs and have either not yet reopened or are slowing reopening.

HealthSpark was a founding partner and investor in the MontCoPA COVID-19 Response Fund, a partnership effort between local philanthropic organizations, nonprofits, government, and public citizens, which has raised nearly $800,000 towards pandemic relief efforts and has supported 127 nonprofits to date most of them health and human service agencies.

Nearly all organizations that are not providing safety net services are laying off their staff especially as their PPP (Payroll Protection Program) runs out and no further allocation is on the horizon, said Nancy Burd of The Burd Group, a Philadelphia-based strategic planning consultancy for grantmakers.

According to a recent study, there were 242,000 nonprofit employees earning more than $11 billion in annual wages in the five-county Philadelphia region.

In May, the results of the Rapid Response: the PHL Nonprofits and COVID-19 Survey, showed that about one out of every five nonprofits in the 10-county region had already laid off staff and one in four anticipated more furloughs to come within the year. Most of these nonprofits were small agencies with a staff of less than 20 people, a large volunteer force and annual budgets between $1 million to $2.49 million.

The nonprofit sector is one-fourth of the economy of Montgomery County, said Johnson, (This survey) gives you a sense of what the nonprofit sector is going through.

For workers, the pandemic s longevity is turning temporary furloughs into permanent unemployment. For the nonprofits that are hibernating programs versus shutting down completely, (they) are trying to keep some programming alive virtually and would hope to re-open in 2021. At that time they would staff up as programs come back. Maybe the staff will be different, but that is the current strategy for many organizations, added Burd.

In our area, one of the first to announce furloughs was the Greater Philadelphia YMCA of Conshohocken, states largest coronavirus-related layoff. We had to make this really tough choice, CEO and President Shaun Elliott told the Philadelphia Inquirer, so that we could survive as an organization to reopen when its possible.

A $100 million organization, the Greater Philadelphia YMCA was taking in only $500,000 a month on expenses of $45 million after the state shuttered the agency.

The YMCA laid off 4,000 people, about 700 of them fulltime employees, leaving a skeletal staff of about 60 people. Elliott stopped collecting a paycheck and the pay of remaining staff was reduced.

On the stronger side of the corona divide are the health and human service agencies.

Here in Philadelphia, and elsewhere, nonprofits providing important safety net services are responding to greater demand and resources appear to be plentiful at all levels philanthropy, government and individuals, Burd said. The Covid 19 Fund run by the Philadelphia Foundation has raised $17 million+ and has distributed most all of it, but only to the social safety net nonprofits.

However, the cultural and arts sector, which was a $4 billion economic driver in Philadelphia alone, is faring much worse. Donors, who may be historically committed to the arts or their colleges are diverting their philanthropic dollars to those in need, that is their first impulse, Burd explained.

The irony is many nonprofits were traveling the right fiscal path and had diversified their revenue streams to decrease dependency on grants and government contracts. It was, in the time before COVID-19, sound business practice.

The great recession of 2008 was the wake-up call. We had encouraged the sector to increase earned income, to become less dependent upon contributed income which has too many strings attached and little control. And those that intentionally recalibrated their business model, were among the healthiest orgs. They became adept at maximizing earned income by monetizing their assets and using them aggressively all to promote financial health and growth and prepare for crisis, Burd said.

Then she added: But today, these are precisely the organizations who have been hurt the most in this pandemic.

After careful reflection, we have determined that reopening Please Touch Museum at this time presents a significant public health risk as well as a financial one. With that, The Please Touch Museum announced it was extending its temporary closure into 2021. After three rounds of layoffs in six months, the staff dropped from 71 employees to 18. Patricia D. Before COVID-19 the museum had an operating budget of $700,000 per month, almost 90% of it was funded from earned revenue including ticket sales and facilities rentals. With the shutdown of the state and schools, its operating budget had slid to $200,000 per month.

The Kimmel Center too earned 93% of its income and had reduced its dependency on philanthropy. But that was before large public gatherings were forbidden. With no audience for its money-making shows and concerts, Kimmel Center President and CEO Anne C. Ewers announced it was furloughing 80% of its staff and cutting pay and hours for the others.

In general, nonprofits are waiting for state and federal budgets (to provide funding), Johnson said. In June, Moodys Analytics announced that based on their calculations, states collectively would need to find $312 billion while the local governments would need uncover close to $200 billion to balance their budgets.

We are forever changed, Johnson. We will never go back to the way things were.

AI Researchers Design Program To Generate Sound Effects For Movies and Other Media – Unite.AI

A team of researchers from the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering (PME) at the University of Chicago has recently succeeded in the creation of an AI system that can create entirely new, artificial proteins by analyzing stores of big data.

Proteins are macromolecules essential for the construction of tissues in living things, and critical to the life of cells in general. Proteins are used by cells as chemical catalysts to make various chemical reactions occur and to carry out complex tasks. If scientists can figure out how to reliably engineer artificial proteins, it could open the door to new ways of carbon capturing, new methods of harvesting energy, and new disease treatments. Artificial proteins have the power to dramatically alter the world we live in. As reported by EurekaAlert, a recent breakthrough by researchers at PME University of Chicago has put scientists closer to those goals. The PME researchers made use of machine learning algorithms to develop a system capable of generating novel forms of protein.

The research team created machine learning models trained on data pulled from various genomic databases. As the models learned, they began to distinguish common underlying patterns, simple rules of design, that enable the creation of artificial proteins. Upon taking the patterns and synthesizing the respective proteins in the lab, the researchers found that the artificial proteins created chemical reactions that were approximately as effective as those driven by naturally occurring proteins.

According to Joseph Regenstein Professor at PME UC, Rama Ranganathan, the research team found that genome data contains a massive amount of information regarding the basic functions and structures of proteins. By utilizing machine learning to recognize these common structures, the researchers were able to bottle natures rules to create proteins ourselves.

The researchers focused on metabolic enzymes for this study, specifically a family of proteins called chorismate mutase. This protein family is necessary for life in a wide variety of plants, fungi, and bacteria.

Ranganathan and collaborators realized that genome databases contained insights just waiting to be discovered by scientists, but that traditional methods of determining the rules regarding protein structure and function have only had limited success. The team set out to design machine learning models capable of revealing these design rules. The models findings imply that new artificial sequences can be created by conserving amino acid positions and correlations in the evolution of amino acid pairs.

The team of researchers created synthetic genes that encoded amino acid sequences producing these proteins. They cloned bacteria with these synthetic genes and found that the bacteria used the synthetic proteins in their cellular machinery, functioning almost exactly the same as regular proteins.

According to Ranganathan, the simple rules that their AI distinguished can be used to create artificial proteins of incredible complexity and variety. As Ranganathan explained to EurekaAlert:

The constraints are much smaller than we ever imagined they would be. There is a simplicity in natures design rules, and we believe similar approaches could help us search for models for design in other complex systems in biology, like ecosystems or the brain.

Ranganathan and collaborators want to take their models and generalize them, creating a platform scientists can use to better understand how proteins are constructed and what effects they have. They hope to use their AI systems to enable other scientists to discover proteins that can tackle important issues like climate change. Ranganathan and Associate Professor Andrew Ferguson have created a company dubbed Evozyne, which aims to commercialize the technology and promote its use in fields like agriculture, energy, and environment.

Understanding the commonalities between proteins, and the relationships between structure and function could also assist in the creation of new drugs and forms of therapy. Though protein folding has long been considered an incredibly difficult problem for computers to crack, the insights from models like the once produced by Ranganathans team could help increase the speed these calculations are produced at, facilitating the creation of new drugs based on these proteins. Drugs could be developed that block the creation of proteins within viruses, potentially aiding in the treatment of even novel viruses like the Covid-19 coronavirus.

Ranganathan and the rest of the research team still need to understand how and why their models work and how they produce reliable protein blueprints. The research teams next goal is to better understand what attributes the models are taking into account to arrive at their conclusions.

Man sparks workplace controversy with reaction to co-workers vegan-only club: Petty and ridiculous – Yahoo Lifestyle

A man is stirring major internet controversy after sharing his response to his co-workers vegan dining club.

The frustrated employee shared his dilemma in Reddits AITA (Am I The A******) forum. Writing under the username Unlucky_Sound_6040, he explained why he decided to start a meat-eaters-only club at work.

After colleagues created an exclusive vegans-only club at work, I created a meat-eaters-only club at work. Am I the a******? the user asked.

Unlucky_Sound_6040 wrote that his office issue began with a co-worker named Jane. Several months ago, she started a dining club for vegans at the company.

According to the Redditor, no one took issue with the club at first. But, after Jane approved her club with the companys human resources department, some employees began to complain.

In the [clubs mission] statement, which passed with HR, one of the rules stated that only vegans, vegetarians, and pescatarians will be welcome, and that all dinner options will be vegan, the user wrote. This rubbed some of us the work way, since it was clearly exclusionary and divisive.

The Redditor added that his workplace soon became divided, with many employees feeling left out. Thats why he and a group of co-workers decided to start the Burger and Steak Club.

The new club, which excluded vegans and vegetarians, also managed to pass through the companys HR approval process. However, many members of vegan club complained in response.

[They said] that our club was exclusionary, offensive to their lifestyle, and that eating meat (as opposed to not eating meat) was not a lifestyle, the user wrote.

Divisions grew deep in the office. Unlucky_Sound_6040 wrote that his relationship with Jane, who formed the vegan club, was significantly damaged.

Despite my prior friendship with Jane, she now refuses to talk to me and is only spending time with her club members, he wrote.

The post drew more than 1,500 comments, with Reddit users taking strong stances on the issue. Many argued that the vegan club should have included all employees.

Jane is why people dont like vegans, one user wrote.

It is incredibly stupid to exclude non-vegans since introducing omnivores to delicious plant-based food is a good way to get them to be more open to veganism, another argued.

Others said the meat-eaters were in the wrong, since their club was excluding a group that, in general, has a tougher time finding enjoyable meals.

Nobody is going to come eat burgers and steak if they arent meat-eaters, one user wrote. Its understandable that vegans/vegetarians would want a safe space.

A few commenters dismissed the controversy altogether though. One called the issue petty and ridiculous.

Although delivery pizzas, all-nighters, and tight budgets characterize college, its also an ideal opportunity to develop lifelong healthy habits. This four-year incubation period is the time to focus on becoming the best version of yourself. Despite restricted dining hall options or roommates who seem to live off instant beef-flavored ramen and microwaved mac and cheese, going vegan on campus is totally doable. Become your best self not just through the higher education youre paying for, but through your lifestyle as well. Here are five tried-and-true steps to help you easily go vegan on (and off) campus.

1. Do your researchBefore you toss out your stash of animal-based convenience foods, it is crucial to find your why. Most people who jump into veganism just because its trendy arent able to stick to the lifestyle. There are many reasons to go vegan. Taking some time to research the benefits will allow you to further educate yourself on the culture and ensure that you make the change for good. Although there is an abundance of resources to motivate your journey, we highly recommend starting with documentaries What the Health or The Game Changers, or the Animal Rights Foundation of Floridas 2011 presentation, 101 Reasons to Go Vegan. All harness science-backed facts to promote the concept of veganism. We promise, all of these resources are far more entertaining than reading another textbook.
