Penny Stocks To Watch If You Like Biotech; 1 Up 287% Year To Date – Penny Stocks

Putting Together Your List Of Penny Stocks To Watch?

Do you like biotech penny stocks? Youre likely among a unique group of investors that can handle risk if you said yes. When it comes to these cheap stocks, not only does volatility play a role, so does speculation. Most small-cap biotech stocks tend to experience extremes.

This goes for extreme jumps and extreme drops. It usually involves 1 of a few things. First, when biotech stocks are on the move higher, theres usually a news catalyst to look for. It might stem from something the company just announced. For more info on different ways to trade penny stocks, download our 60+ page eBook for free.

On the flip side biotech companies pre-announce important dates. So it could have something to do with an upcoming announcement. Usually, these entail things like phase trial results, data readouts, or new patient enrollment. You may also see things like PDUFA dates, IND submission or approvals, and NDA submission or approvals. These all have to do with different FDA events. Dont worry if you dont understand what these acronyms mean, Ill explain, briefly.

The FDAs IND or Investigational New Drug program allows pharmaceutical companies permission to begin human clinical trials and ship experimental drugs across state lines before a marketing application for the drug has been approved. Essentially it is a starting point for clinical investigations in the US. The main idea of an initial IND submission is to ensure the safety and rights of clinical trial participants.

In business, you generally see and NDA as a non-disclosure agreement. However, when it comes to biotech, NDA means something completely different. This refers to a New Drug Application. The NDA application sponsors formally propose that the FDA approve a new pharmaceutical for sale and marketing in the U.S. The data gathered during the animal studies and human clinical trials of an IND become part of the NDA.

PDUFA or Prescription Drug User Free Act was passed in the 90s and authorizes the FDA to receive fees from drug manufacturers. These fees are used to fund the drug approval process. The PDUFA date is a deadline for the FDA to review a new drug application. The typical review period can be anywhere from 6-10 months depending on priority.

Ok, so now youve got a basic understanding of some of the basic FDA forms. As I said above favorable outcomes to data readouts or any of these forms can trigger momentum in the market. On the flip side, if a company isnt granted permissions or misses trial endpoints, then the other side of the coin is a move to the downside. One thing to consider during times of negative readouts is managements commentary.

It can be a big blow to any stock, including penny stocks, but how management reacts is important. Are they fully giving up on the treatment or did they find some positives that suggest that theres still something to build upon? While the road may be long, many biotech penny stocks end up recovering in the end as they rework their trials. With this in mind, here are a few biotech penny stocks to watch right now.

VYNE Therapeutics (VYNE Stock Report) might appear as a new biotech company. However, it is one that weve discussed in the past under the name Menlo Therapeutics. While Menlo had its ups and downs throughout the year, it did experience several bouts of bullishness. This month, the name and symbol changes went into effect and now weve got VYNE stock.

The companys focus remains on dermatology treatments. In light of this, CEO David Domzalski explained, Having achieved FDA approval for our two commercial products AMZEEQ and ZILXI in a period of less than eight months is a testament to the value of our proprietary technology and is aligned to the symbolic meaning behind our new name strength, growth, endurance, and resilience.

Domzalski also filed a Form 4 recently showing the purchase of 75,000 of the companys stock. The average price per share was $1.38. CFO Andrew Saik also picked up a chunk as well. He purchased 40,000 at an average of $1.462. This week, VYNE appointed a new Director to its board, Patrick LePore. Considering the recent activity, will VYNE stock be on your watch list in September?

Unity Biotechnology Inc.(UBX Stock Report) is another one of the trending biotech penny stocks to watch. If youre unfamiliar with the company theres a reason for that. For most of this year, UBX stock rarely came close to penny stock territory. That all came to an end after shares plummeted from around $12.50 to recent lows of $2.72 in August. Remember what I was saying about the outcome of meeting or missing endpoints? In this case, Unity Biotech announced that its UBX0101, osteoarthritis treatment missed its primary endpoint.

After several weeks of sideways trading, volume began picking up this week. Price has also followed. Aside from participating in a few industry conferences this month, Unity also announced new developments. The company announced the initiation of a restructuring. Unity said it is to align programs in ophthalmology and neurology.

[Read More] Should Your List Of Penny Stocks Include These 3 Names?

The company said it will advance its UBX1325 to Phase 1 clinical development in patients with diabetic macular edema. Furthermore, it expects to dose the first patient in the second half of 2020. This corporate restructuring is also said to extend the companys cash runway through mid-2022.

Lipocine Inc. (LPCN Stock Report) is another one of the biotech penny stocks weve watched for months. In fact, year-to-date, LPCN stock is up more than 280%. A lot of the lead-in to the recent price movement came in light of its TLANDO treatment. This is the companys oral testosterone replacement therapy. Lipocine originally had its Prescription Drug User Fee Act goal date ofAugust 28, 2020. However, that was pushed back by the FDA. In light of this extension, the market lost a bit of its thunder and shares have slid nearly $1 a share in the course of about a month.

Although the FDA did not provide a timeline on a new action date, the FDA informed the Company that the review is expected to be completed in the coming weeks. The FDA has not asked for any additional data and the Company has provided the FDA with all information requested to date.

It has now been more than a few weeks since then. The company also just presented at the H.C. Wainwright Investment Conference on Monday. While trading volumes and price have picked up, is this just general speculation on that coming weeks statement? Obviously, well follow this closely, but its also important to note that this could also remain a high-risk situation depending on the PDUFA outcome whenever that may be.

Coping and Hoping: Mental Health Tips for Trying Times | University of Michigan – Michigan Medicine

Even before 2020 began, many Americans of all ages had mental health conditions and alcohol or drug issues that werent getting the attention and care that they deserved.

Now, six months into the COVID-19 pandemic, three months into a major social justice movement, two months away from a national election and with school starting, hurricanes blowing, wildfires burning and the economy slumping, its a fair bet that many more people are struggling with mental health concerns.

Thats why Michigan Medicine assembled a panel of experts for a recent webinar to offer concrete steps that might help, and links to further resources for helping to manage overall well-being.

This recording has a wealth of tips, from breathing exercises to family activities to advice about the kinds of healthy lifestyle choices that can bolster mental health and keep alcohol use in check. The U-M Department of Psychiatry also offers a wide range of resources and helpful links in its COVID-19 Toolkit.

If youre feeling overly stressed, depressed, anxious or concerned about your alcohol use or someone close to you is showing such signs you dont have to start with a specialist. In fact, primary care providers such as family doctors, general internists, pediatricians and primary care nurse practitioners, are trained to handle many mental health symptoms, says Jill Schneiderhan, M.D., a U-M family medicine doctor and mental wellness specialist.

So just as you would start by contacting them for a new physical symptom, dont be afraid to contact them about changes to your mental health and substance use. That includes a persistent low mood, finding things less enjoyable, and anxious thoughts that intrude on your everyday life.

Several of the experts focused on the things you can do to improve your mental state, including more regular bed times and wake times, cutting out screen use in bed, keeping up social connections even if its via video chat or phone calls, eating a healthy diet, getting regular physical activity, engaging in a hobby, spending time outside, and engaging with art and music.

Elizabeth Duval, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist in the U-M Department of Psychiatry, offers some specific breathing exercises and mindfulness activities that anyone of any age can do, almost anywhere.

Box breathing: Breathe in for a few seconds, hold for a few seconds, breathe out for a few seconds, and hold for a few seconds before breathing in again.

Try the 54321 exercise: Sitting or standing wherever you are, take a moment to notice and name out loud or to yourself five things you can see right now, four things you can touch, three things you can hear, two things you can smell and one thing you can taste.

When talking with someone, say what you are feeling inside. Just speaking it out loud can actually help defuse the feeling itself

If youre a parent, keep in mind that your children are noticing and reacting to the way youre handling these times, says Polly Gipson, Ph.D., a pediatric psychologist who heads U-Ms Trauma and Grief Clinic. Thats especially true if your family has lost someone to COVID-19, or you belong to a group or live in an area thats being especially affected by current events.

But you can be a model to them by engaging in healthy mental wellbeing self-care and finding ways to focus on positive memories, things to be grateful for, family togetherness because of the lack of scheduled activities, and more. She recommends the CALM method: Communicate with the child to share information, find out what they know and validate their feelings; help them stay Active and creative; Learn how children in general, or your child in particular, show distress; and Model self-care by using positive strategies and sharing them with children.

Childrens future mental health depends in part on how theyre affected by adverse experiences now, both their own and those that their larger community is going through. If you notice troubling behavior in the children in your life, speaking up to get help can make a major difference.

Alcohol and cannabis sales have shot up during the past six months, and jokes about drinking or using marijuana-derived products to cope with these times are rampant on social media. This is typical during stressful times, says Mark Ilgen, Ph.D., the addiction psychologist who directs the U-M Addiction Treatment Services. But he warns that as time goes on, what was once a short-term coping mechanism could develop into a substance-use problem.

Fortunately, he says, support groups, twelve-step groups and addiction care specialists have pivoted to offer online help. And newer medications can help people who have developed a dependence on alcohol, opioids and more. If youre not sure you need this level of help, he notes that many people can cut back on their substance use on their own, by setting targets for themselves including limits on daily or weekly alcohol or cannabis intake. If you find you cant stay within these self-imposed limits, thats a time to seek help. Find more information on the U-M Addiction Treatment Services COVID-19 Addiction & Recovery Resources page.

Above all else, the experts note, if you or someone youre in contact with have been feeling hopeless or even suicidal, its crucial to get help. Dont shy away from discussing the topic, and get in touch with a primary care provider if its not an urgent situation. For urgent or life-threatening situations, contact the National Suicide Prevention hotline at 800-273-8255 or call 911.

High Blood Pressure on the Rise: How to Manage Yours – Healthline

New research is reporting that uncontrolled high blood pressure is a growing problem among adults in the United States.

The findings were presented this week at the virtual American Heart Associations Hypertension Scientific Sessions 2020.

The report, which hasnt been peer-reviewed or published yet, paints a bleak picture of the current landscape.

The data collected up until 2014 showed that an increasing number of Americans were managing their blood pressure, but data from 2015 and 2016 showed a drop of more than 6 percent.

Additionally, the percentage of U.S. adults with controlled high blood pressure dropped by 11 percent between 2013 and 2018. The percentage of adults in their 40s and 50s with controlled blood pressure also fell nearly 10 percent between 2009 and 2018.

This study should serve as a wake-up call to all physicians, Dr. Guy L. Mintz, director of cardiovascular health and lipidology at Northwell Healths Sandra Atlas Bass Heart Hospital in New York, told Healthline.

Alarms should be going off because we are doing a substandard job of diagnosing hypertension and are failing at the effective treatment and control of hypertension, he added.

Dr. Brent M. Egan, who is the studys lead author, a professor at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, and the American Medical Associations vice president of cardiovascular disease prevention, told Healthline that its crucial for people to understand that maintaining healthy blood pressure is an ongoing process.

Individuals with high blood pressure need to be aware of their condition, so they can take steps to control it. For many individuals, management includes both a healthy lifestyle and medications, Egan said. Effective self-management includes taking necessary and sufficient medication together with a healthy lifestyle to control blood pressure. [It is] a consistent, long-term, ongoing process and not an episodic event.

Egan points out that blood pressure thats not managed well can increase the risk of heart attack, heart failure, and stroke, due to the way hypertension can affect the blood vessels and heart.

Other somewhat less serious side effects can include headaches, fatigue, reduced exercise tolerance, and blurred vision.

A wrinkle that can lead to confusion among doctors and patients is the fact that theres more than one way to get a blood pressure reading, said Mintz.

While physicians have taken blood pressure readings using a stethoscope for years, there is a different method.

Its called ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, which takes readings for a 24-hour period, and is considered to be more accurate.

The challenge to make ambulatory blood pressure management the gold standard for diagnosing hypertension involves a focused education against the ingrained stubbornness of the majority of physicians, said Mintz. Many physicians balk at the cost of an ambulatory blood pressure monitor, which ranges from $1,500 to $3,000 depending on the type of monitor. The reluctance to purchase an ambulatory blood pressure monitor is also related to the limited insurance coverage for this procedure. However, recently there has been improved coverage.

Egan said that its important for people to know their blood pressure numbers by getting a reading at least once per year.

They should also be aware of which blood pressure category normal, elevated, stage 1 hypertension, or stage 2 hypertension they fall into.

From there, its important to follow up with a doctor to determine which lifestyle interventions or medications might be needed to manage their blood pressure.

For many patients, training in self-monitored blood pressure, including recording values and relaying those to the healthcare team is beneficial in improving blood pressure control, said Egan.

But it isnt just the individual and their doctor who can help, says Egan. Family members can also be a great support.

Lifestyle changes are better done together, he said. Walk together. Have healthy meals and snacks together. Sometimes, help getting medication and keeping medical appointments require assistance with transportation or costs.

Egan also notes that the American Heart Association (AHA) and the American Medical Association (AMA) have launched a national initiative, known as Target:BP, which is trying to help medical providers across the country improve blood pressure control rates.

He said healthcare professionals can also utilize programs proven to improve blood pressure control. That includes the AMAs MAP BP program, which stands for measure accurately, act rapidly, and partner with patients and families.

The AMA and AHA are partnering on Target:BP and the MAP BP program to improve hypertension control rates nationally and to improve equity in blood pressure control and cardiovascular outcomes, Egan noted.

Finally, its critical for everyone to be aware of the serious risks associated with hypertension.

Hypertension remains the silent killer because there are no symptoms and its a major risk factor for heart attack, stroke, and progressive kidney disease, said Mintz.

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 15, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- Herbalife Nutrition (NYSE: HLF), a premier global nutrition company, together with the Herbalife Nutrition Foundation, today announced an expanded partnership with the National Hispanic Council on Aging (NHCOA), the leading organization working to improve the lives of older Hispanic adults, their families and caregivers. The partnership empowers the aging Hispanic population with necessary tools to support their health by providing access to healthy nutrition, as well as nutrition education and fitness programs to promote healthy aging. NHCOA joins the Company's growing network of nonprofit organizations under its Nutrition for Zero Hunger (NFZH) initiative, further demonstrating the often-overlooked effects of hunger and malnutrition in different communities.

"Our Nutrition for Zero Hunger campaign is designed to do one thing: eradicate hunger around the world. Working with the National Hispanic Council on Aging, we will expand our reach as we tackle this global crisis," said Alan Hoffman, executive vice president, Global Corporate Affairs, Herbalife Nutrition.

According to NHCOA, by 2060 the aging Hispanic population is expected to grow to 21.5 million. While more than 32% of this population lacks health insurance, economic and food insecurity are also prevalent issues among older Hispanic adults, placing this population at a higher risk for a number of chronic diseases, including obesity and diabetes. The Company will provide funding for NHCOA's health education and promotion programs, focusing on healthy lifestyle habits.

The continued partnership under NFZH supports NHCOA's health and well-being programs, which consist of training sessions focused on health priorities including prevention and risk factors of diabetes, obesity, and cancer, and also promotes heathy eating habits and physical activity.

I Learned Proper Portion Control Through WW And Lost 107 Pounds In 2 Years – Women’s Health

My name is Katy Allen (@kallen_cooks), and I am 23. I currently live in St. Louis, Missouri, where I work as a labor and delivery nurse. I joined WW (formerly Weight Watchers) and learned proper portion controland I feel like my healthiest, happiest self.

My weight has fluctuated up and down my entire life. As a child and throughout middle school, I was heavier than my close friends and family members, and very aware of it. I was told I was just "big boned" and born "the opposite" of my tall and skinny sister.

My self worth revolved around my body image and how I was perceived by others, even at a young age. I would put myself on cleanses or fad diets, and spend hours exercising in the evening. Then I would binge on anything I could find in the pantry. This was a revolving cycle, and it was just my normal.

Once I began high school, I got into dance and joined the competitive poms team. I was in better shape those years but still had a very poor relationship with my body image. I saw myself as bigger than the other girls, and always felt self conscious in group settings. Throughout this time I had a poor sense of portion control and continued to eat mindlessly.

My senior year of high school through the end of my freshman year of college, I kicked it into high gear with exercise and healthier eating. I lost around 20 pounds. This was the first time I was ever able to lose a significant amount of weight, and I was hooked. I was running more than five miles a day, tracking my calories, and going to the gym before school at 6 a.m.

But gradually this lifestyle became less feasible with nursing classes, an ankle injury, and my first experiences with depression and anxiety. I stopped exercising and returned to an unhealthy diet of fast food, sugar, and whatever was accessible. By the end of college, I had gained around 80 pounds. I graduated college at my heaviest weight ever, 253 pounds at 21 years old.

I hardly slept and was chronically fatigued. Walking up a flight of stairs would leave me breathless and my joints would ache. My ankles and knees were in pain to the point that I was taking Aleve most days of the week and wearing a brace.

My blood pressure and blood glucose levels were high as well. My doctor was concerned that I was developing prediabetes and hypertension that would need to be managed with medication. These health problems, in my case, were preventableand uncommon for someone in their early 20s.

Aside from the physical health problems I had encountered, I was extremely uncomfortable in my own body. My clothes no longer fit, and I was wearing sizes bigger than those I was used to. I was also getting ready to begin my career as a nurse, where I would be constantly on my feet and expected to take care of multiple patients at a time. How could I take great care of others when I wasn't taking care of myself?

I was moving to a new city and starting fresh. I decided that the day I took my nursing boards my journey would begin. I began WW (Wellness Wins, formerly known as Weight Watchers) on June 26, 2018.

I knew that I was going to be in this for the long haul, so a quick cleanse or restrictive diet plan was not going to work for me. I heard of WW from family members and had seen it advertised at work, so I decided to give it a try. What has been the most helpful is adding the foods I eat to a daily tracker. Every food or recipe is assigned a SmartPoint value based on the ingredients and serving size.

With WW, no foods are off limits or considered "bad" foods, regardless of their SmartPoint value. This system has motivated me to measure my foods, rather than mindlessly eating from the bag or dumping a random amount into a recipe.

For the first year of my weight loss journey, I went to a conventional gym and took yoga classes here and there. I took my first Pure Barre class with a friend in June of 2019 and have been going regularly ever since!

I prefer low impact workouts rather than more strenuous activities such as HIIT or running. Pure Barre, combined with regular yoga, has helped improve my muscle tone, endurance, and self confidence.

I want other women to know that my weight loss and overall wellness journey has not been linear. There have been highs and lows, physically and emotionally, throughout this entire process. And there will continue to be!

Living a healthy lifestyle is a choice, and it is one that I make every single day. There is a small chance that I will stay this weight for the rest of my life, and that is okay. I now know that I have the tools to remain healthy and make the best choices for my body.

We can do more to help the elderly cope with the COVID-19 crisis – The Jerusalem Post

Does the society really wish to help the elderly cope with the COVID-19 crisis? If so, why does not it address the problem at the root? There is a lot of uncertainty about the COVID-19 statistics. Yet, at least one piece of evidence is clear: older persons are at the greatest risk. And this simply means that the aging process and its resulting multiple aging-related diseases (multimorbidity) are the main determinants for disability, hospitalizations, severe clinical outcomes and deaths with COVID-19 and thus are responsible for the devastating damages to the economy and the entire society. There is now a broad social realization that the elderly are the main risk group that needs to be protected. Then why not make the next logical step and realize the crucial role of the degenerative aging processes, the diminishing resilience and immunity of the aging persons, and the corresponding vital need to therapeutically ameliorate these degenerative aging processes to improve immunity and resilience? This could help mitigate the present crisis and avert future ones. This is the essence of the geroscience approach to the COVID-19 crisis that aims to therapeutically improve multiple aging-related diseases by intervening into their underlying aging processes, such as the process of immunosenescence. A recent position paper Geroscience in the Age of COVID-19 published in the prestigious scientific journal Aging and Disease by some of the leading figures in the field of geroscience, from the US and Israel, promotes the geroscience-based preventive interventions. In addition to the healthy lifestyle (such as exercise, sufficient sleep and balanced nutrition) known to improve immunity in older persons, the geroscientists advocate for expanding the testing of existing drugs with established safety profiles that can potentially improve the biology of aging, immune mechanisms and resilience (the so called geroprotectors). These include such medications as metformin, rapamycin and their analogues, as well as NAD boosters, senolytics, biological immuno-modulatorors and other prospective geroprotective agents. These interventions showed promise in animal studies and some emerging human trials, though the scientists caution that so far no such treatments have yet been approved as geroprotectors for use in humans. Hence, self-medication with any of these substances is highly discouraged. Yet, the broader clinical testing of the existing, potentially geroprotective drugs, as well as developing new drugs targeting the aging processes, can be an effective long-term line of defense. Alongside the therapies, the geroscientists also advocate for the broader introduction of measurements (biomarkers) of aging, especially measurements of the deteriorating immune system, as potentially powerful means to predict the risks for the elderly, improve treatments and allocate resources for the protection of those who are most in need of it.THEN WHY not support and advance this research? Experience shows that it is not sufficiently supported. Vast funding is now allocated to researching and developing treatments for COVID-19, including some rather unorthodox and uncertain treatments. The calls for research proposals on COVID-19 now mainly focus on reactive treatments and vaccines. But there is insufficient realization that many reactive treatments and vaccines for COVID-19, whenever they are developed, will likely have diminished safety and efficacy in elderly patients who are at the highest risk, precisely because of their impaired immunity and resilience that geroscience aims to enhance. Yet very little support is explicitly announced for developing preventive geroscience-based interventions for improving the underlying aging health. Just compare the over $3.6 billion allocated by the NIH for the COVID-19 response, with only a few million for geroscience-oriented approaches called for by the National Institute on Aging within the NIH. In other places, such as the EU and Israel, such calls for preventive aging interventions are even more difficult, next to impossible, to find. The public awareness and support of such preventive interventions are also comparatively minuscule, compared to some of the massively publicized research directions such as vaccine development. Is the lack of attention to this approach due to our entrenched psychological reluctance to face our aging process that spills over to science? Is it due to ageism in healthcare that generally discriminates against or ignores the special concerns and needs of older persons? Is it the reluctance to think holistically and for the long term? Whatever the psychological impediments, the scientific community and the wide public should think rationally and proactively and give a strong focus and support for aging health interventions. cnxps.cmd.push(function () { cnxps({ playerId: '36af7c51-0caf-4741-9824-2c941fc6c17b' }).render('4c4d856e0e6f4e3d808bbc1715e132f6'); });If there is a lesson to be learned from this crisis, it is arguably the realization of the need to therapeutically address degenerative aging processes to prevent aging-related ill health as a whole. This understanding should translate to public health and research policies supportive of geroscience research, development and clinical application, improving the funding, incentives, education and institutional and public support for the field. Public advocacy should play an essential role for the realization of these goals. An example of such an advocacy effort is the public initiative for Enhancing research, development and education for promoting healthy longevity and preventing aging-related diseases advocated by the associations Vetek (Seniority) the Movement for Longevity and Quality of Life and Disabled, Not Half a Person. With sufficient support and deployment, the preventive geroscience approach may help avoid or mitigate the effects of devastating crises of aging-related ill health presently and for the future. The writer, a PhD, is the chief science officer of Vetek (Seniority) Association the Movement for Longevity and Quality of Life and Disabled, Not Half a Person, Israel.

During the Covid 19 Pandemic, Canadians Who Maintain a Healthy Body Weight Enjoy Better Physical and Mental Health – Canada NewsWire

MONTREAL, Sept. 15, 2020 /CNW/ - During the Covid 19 pandemic, 30% of Canadians have reported gaining weight during just the first few months. This is worrisome since obesity has been shown to be associated with more serious Covid 19 infections. In addition, new data fromCanadians who participated in a web-based health promotion program also demonstrated that during the pandemic adults with an ideal body weight, (Body Mass Index, or BMI of 18.5-24.9 kg/m2) suffered less from mental health issues including poor sleep, increased stress, and symptoms of depression. They were also up to three times more physically active than heavier individuals.

To help Canadian adults lose their "Covid 19 pounds" the MissionVAV Health Program will launch the Drop 5 Mission on September 21. This on-line weight management program, proven to help participants lose 5% of their weight and keep it off,is funded by Veterans Affairs Canada (#). It is designedto help individuals learn strategies that are essential for long-term weight management. The program combines education, digital tracking, social support and personalized health coaching.Given social isolation, health coaching will be provided by medical student volunteers from McGill University.

Dr Steven Grover, a Professor of Medicine at McGill, and one of the leaders of this program noted: "Health promotion and disease prevention are skills that most doctors struggle with. Long-Term Effects Of Diabetes To Your Body – Emagazine.com – E/The Environmental Magazine

Diabetes is a lifelong condition that can make you susceptible to illnesses and diseases and is caused when a persons blood sugar levels become too high. Diabetes and pre-diabetes are conditions said to affect up to fifty percent of the population of the United States. Diabetes can hinder the quality of a persons life massively. It is critical that in order to live a long, healthy life, you do not consume sugary foods all of the time, otherwise, you may end up with diabetes, which during this current global pandemic, is contributing to high mortality rates. Diabetes must not be allowed to take over your life.

Diabetes is a condition with two main types. There is type one diabetes, which is when the bodys immune system begins to attack and destroy the cells that produce insulin type one diabetes is the most dangerous and the one that can cause the most amount of problems. Type two diabetes is when your body does not produce enough insulin and the bodys cells do not react to insulin. Type two diabetes is the most commonly found type of diabetes throughout the world, with over ninety percent of cases in the United Kingdom being attributed to type two diabetes.

Before moving onto the long-term effects that diabetes can have on your body, it is first important to mention the use of oral medication in the treatment of diabetes. Oral medication can be very successful in treating cases of diabetes and is the most commonly used method of treatment. When oral medication is used in combination with exercise and a healthy lifestyle, it can be very effective. One such medication, Dulaglutide, which is sold under the Trulicity brand name, is commonly used around the world to treat type 2 diabetes and helps to keep your blood sugar in check. However, the reason that online medication specifically has been mentioned, is that in some cases it may be counterproductive and illegal. You should only order online medication for your diabetes if your doctor has recommended it to you. You must not treat yourself, as self-treatment without medical intervention can have serious consequences on your health. You will likely not be a doctor, and no matter how many blog posts or forums you have read you do not know enough to treat yourself. Self-treatment can be a detriment to your recovery and can actually hinder it.

As diabetes increases your blood sugar and makes it higher than it should be, it can cause, after many years, serious problems in your body. Diabetes can harm your eyes, your kidneys, your nerves, your heart, your skin, your blood vessels, and many other parts of your body. The long-term effects of untreated diabetes can be very damaging and cause significant side-effects that can massively hinder your quality of life and in some cases leave you paralyzed. Below you will find the long-term effects of diabetes if left untreated. Always treat your diabetes never allow it to come to what is below:

Diabetes can cause significant eye problems and can directly contribute to blindness. The first sign that diabetes is causing you problems with your eyes is that you have trouble seeing during night time and your eyes become sensitive to light if you have never experienced these before, you may be suffering from diabetes. It can also lead to blindness and is very common among untreated diabetes patients.

Those who suffer from diabetes may go on to develop nasty sores, infections, and illnesses if the sores and infections go on for too long and are not treated, you may have to have the parts affected amputated. Infection also causes pus oozing, pain, and itching, as well as inflammation.

Having diabetes means you may not be able to control your blood pressure and your cholesterol levels. This can mean you may be more susceptible to a heart attack, angina, stroke, and other heart-related conditions it can also make the blood flow from your heart to your legs and feet much more difficult, which in some cases, can result in further amputation.

The nerves within your body can become very damaged as a consequence of untreated diabetes and you can begin to feel sensations such as tingling and loss of feeling. Nerve damage in male diabetes patients can also make it harder to grow and maintain an erection. If the nerve damage goes on and becomes too severe, you may become paralyzed in the parts of your body experiencing the nerve damage.

Food digestion can be hindered when you suffer from diabetes, and you may have trouble and weakness in your bowel movements. Diabetes can be very harmful to your digestive system and can wreak absolute havoc on it. Diabetes can be a big problem when it comes to digestion.

Kidney damage is another problem commonly associated with high levels of blood sugar. Your kidneys may not work as well as they once might have and could even stop working altogether. This could result in dialysis or a kidney transplant, both of which can hinder your quality of life massively and leave you in severe pain for the rest of it.

Mental health problems have been linked to diabetes patients through studies and research. Depression and anxiety have been said to be heavily linked to diabetes and it is even said that the two conditions go hand in hand. Patients who suffer from diabetes are more likely to experience depression and anxiety than those who do not. Mental health problems, in combination with the previously mentioned conditions, can absolutely ruin your life and leave you a shadow of your former self. Rather than allowing diabetes to get this bad and completely ruin your life, seek treatment. Treatment for diabetes can consist of some simple lifestyle changes and some medication. Seek treatment and your symptoms will be reduced and you may be able to fight off diabetes.

Now, with the help of this page, you know everything that there is to know about the long-term effects of diabetes. Treatment is essential and you mustnt suffer silently with the condition as if you do you can do yourself more harm than you could possibly imagine.

People who have been living with HIV for many yearsespecially those who have experienced advanced immune suppression and those who have taken many antiretroviral medicationsare at greater risk for comorbidities. But these conditions also affect people with well-controlled HIV.

Some of these problems are associated with normal aging, but studies show that HIV-positive people tend to develop age-related conditions as much as a decade earlier than their HIV-negative counterparts.

Theres evidence that cardiovascular disease is more advanced in HIV patientssome estimates have said five to 10 years more advanced, says Steven Grinspoon, MD, a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and director of the Nutrition Obesity Research Center at Harvard. Frailty is associated with senescence and may increase vulnerability to aging-related processes, and reductions in physical function suggestive of early frailty seem to be very common in HIV patients.

Frailty is characterized by muscle and bone loss, weakness and decreased energy, and it can lead to reduced strength and endurance, heightened risk of fractures and progressive difficulty carrying out activities of daily life.

HIV and Inflammation

Chronic immune activation and inflammation appear to be a common thread tying together the various coexisting conditions seen in people living with HIV.

Even in people with sustained viral suppression and a near-normal CD4 T-cell count, chronic HIV infection triggers ongoing immune activation and persistent inflammation, which can take its toll throughout the body.

Even among patients with clinically well-controlled HIV, persistent virus in T-cell and macrophage reservoirs may lead to low-grade immune activation. Chronic immune activation may be associated with more generalized inflammation as well, Grinspoon says. Immune activation and inflammation may be appropriate mechanisms by which the immune system targets HIV, but these processes may cause collateral damage in multiple organs.

Persistently activated immune cells, including macrophages and monocytes, produce inflammatory cytokines, which can alter metabolism and blood vessel function and play a role in feedback loops that further increase inflammation.

Several comorbidities commonly seen in people with HIV are associated with metabolic syndrome, a cluster of conditionsinsulin resistance, abnormal blood lipid levels (dyslipidemia), high blood pressure (hypertension) and abdominal obesitythat raise the risk for cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Whats more, some HIV-positive people develop a form of abdominal fat accumulation known as lipohypertrophy, which involves the buildup of visceral fat inside the abdomen surrounding the internal organs. This fat is metabolically active tissue that produces cytokines and hormones of its own.

With central fat accumulation, you can get inflammatory cells like macrophages that reside in the fat and release excess cytokines, which can draw in further monocytes and macrophages that produce substances that cause insulin resistance and dyslipidemia, Grinspoon explains. So the inflammation begets metabolic problems, and those metabolic problems beget further inflammation. These processes are intimately intertwined.

Conversely, although much less common in the age of effective antiretroviral treatment, some people with HIV may still develop wasting, which involved the unintentional loss of both fat and lean body mass (see What About Wasting?).

Heart, Liver and Kidney Disease

Numerous studies over the course of the epidemic have shown that people with HIV have a 50% to 100% greater risk of developing cardiovascular disease and its complications, including heart attacks and strokes.

Over time, plaquea combination of fat, cholesterol, calcium and immune cellscan build up on artery walls, a process known as atherosclerosis or hardening of the arteries. This narrows the vessels and restricts the flow of blood. Research suggests that plaque buildup happens at younger ages in people with HIV.

Whats more, bits of plaque can break off and lodge as clots in the coronary arteries that supply the heart muscle, leading to a heart attack, or in small blood vessels in the brain, causing a stroke. Plaque associated with ongoing inflammation appears especially prone to rupture, according to Grinspoon.

Inflammation can also wreak havoc on the liver. As antiretroviral treatment has dramatically reduced AIDS-related mortality, liver disease has become a leading cause of death for people living with HIV. Now that hepatitis B can be prevented with a vaccine and hepatitis C can be easily cured, fatty liver disease is becoming a major driver of advanced liver disease in HIV-positive and HIV-negative people alike.

Fatty liver disease goes along with obesity and excess weight, and it is also seen among those with diabetes and insulin resistance, as well as those with poor diet, says Grinspoon.

Chronic hepatitis B or C, fatty liver disease, heavy alcohol use and other causes of liver injury can trigger liver inflammation followed by fibrosis, or the buildup of scar tissue, as the organ tries to repair itself. Over years or decades, this can lead to serious complications, including cirrhosis, liver cancer and the need for a liver transplant. Studies have shown that this process seems to occur faster in people with HIV.

The kidneys, too, are vulnerable to the effects of inflammation. HIV-positive people have a higher rate of chronic kidney disease than their HIV-negative peers, with African Americans having the greatest risk. Certain antiretroviral medicationsin particular the older form of tenofovircan cause kidney problems in susceptible individuals. But even people who dont use this drug have a higher likelihood of impaired kidney function. Diabetes and high blood pressure, two components of metabolic syndrome, are the leading causes of kidney disease; hepatitis C coinfection also raises the risk.

Optimizing Overall Health

Regardless of which comorbidities you may have, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is key to optimizing your overall health.

Beyond HIV and the resulting inflammation, traditional risk factorsincluding smoking, high cholesterol, obesity and family historyare major contributors to elevated rates of heart disease and other comorbidities among people living with HIV. One study found that such traditional factors account for about a quarter of the excess risk of cardiovascular disease in this population.

Fortunately, many of these risk factors are under your control. Smoking, in particular, substantially raises the risk of heart disease, chronic lung disease and several types of cancer.

I want to emphasize that traditional risk factors matter, says Grinspoon. Stopping smoking is the number one most important thing you can do. Its really important because smoking may interact with inflammation and cause particularly severe disease.

Grinspoon is the principal investigator for a large trial called REPRIEVE that aims to learn more about cardiovascular disease among people living with HIV. The primary goal is to see whether a statin medication can prevent heart disease in this population. Statins not only lower cholesterol but also have anti-inflammatory properties, so they may offer a two-for-one benefit for people with HIV. Sub-studies will look at the effects of the statin on frailty and kidney function.

With 7,700 participants from 12 countries, REPRIEVE also has the potential to shed ligh
t on many other questions about the health of people living, and aging, with HIV. The study is now fully enrolled, and the primary results are expected in 2023.

In the meantime, to minimize the risk of heart disease, liver disease and other comorbidities, Grinspoon recommends a healthy diet, weight management, exercise and using medications to control hypertension, blood glucose and lipids. He suggests a balanced diet that includes polyunsaturated fatsfor example a Mediterranean dietand one that is low in salt and fructose, as fructose contributes significantly to fatty liver disease.

Exercise is important in two ways, he continues. One, it helps reduce weight, and two, its anti-inflammatory. It will help your blood pressure and help your glucose. Getting some exercise every day would be great.

Last but not least, its essential to start or stay on effective antiretroviral therapy to keep viral loadand the resulting inflammationas low as possible, he advises. I think thats the state of the art right now.

Blue Band and Margarine’s Morph into Meaningfulness – Forbes Africa

By Larry Light, CEO Arcature Brand Consulting

Brand revitalization requires finding and satisfying a new, important customer need. Brand success requires being the best at something relevant and differentiated. It means never taking your eye off of changing customer needs.

As veganism and vegetarianism diets become more embedded into peoples lifestyles, anything plant-based is now perceived as good. Plant-based foods and beverages are seen as healthy and planet-friendly, an image that appears to override the idea that processing also takes place in their production.

Margarine is a non-dairy spread that was previously marginalized due to its hydrogenation, which turns polyunsaturates into saturates and trans-fatty acids. Because of hydrogenation, and its non-buttery texture and taste, margarine sales declined over the last decade. But, now margarine is morphing into healthier fare, as margarine is naturally plant-based. And, hydrogenation is no longer used to make margarine firmer and texturally closer to dairy butter. Current alternative butter brands made from plants contain healthy unsaturated fats. Brands, such as Blue Band, that were derided as pale non-dairy substitutes are now desired as manufacturers update and revise ingredients. Margarine has now become a darling of the alternative dietary regime crowds.

Margarine has an interesting past. Frances first president (1848-1852), Napoleon III, the nephew Napoleon I, asked for an alternative to butter due to food shortages that affected feeding the French army. A chemist, Hippolte Mege-Mouries created oleomargarine and the rest is history.

Unilever built a global margarine and spread business that included over 100 brands including Flora, I Cant Believe Its Not Butter, Blue Band. In 2017, after a very high-priced bidding war, investment firm KKR walked away with the prize, offering Unilever approximately US$7.7 billion (6.8 billion). The acquired business was set up under a new corporate entity called Upfield.

Ordinarily, the terms brand revitalization and private equity are not commonly used in the same sentence, so kudos to KKR. Rather than starve the former Unilever brands, KKR saw an opportunity that could not be overlooked: the appeal and profitability of plant-based foods. With some recipe changes and new marketing, KKR could leverage its portfolio as a healthier and more sustainable way to eat.

Some products were jettisoned, but this was to be laser-focused on the brands that fit the overarching portfolios new positioning. This new positioning is clearly articulated on Upfields website We are the largest plant-based consumer products company in the world and we have embarked on a journey to deliver a Better Plant-Based Future to the benefit of our customers and consumers alike. Along with this statement is the commitment to sustainability including a policy paper titled, A Better Plant-Based Future.

According to Financial Times, Upfield is determined to change the image of margarine. By focusing on the sustainability of margarine, Upfield is altering its ingredient lists by reducing each product to around five natural ingredients to create cleaner labels. Financial Times reports that originally KKR intended to strip out inefficiencies but decided on a new strategy after spotting consumer appetite for sexy plant-based foods. Apparently, Upfield made the correct decision, as its net sales grew 1.3% in 2019. And, The Good Food Institute reported sales of plant-based alternatives to meat, dairy and eggs rose 11% year on year in the US to $5 billion in 2019.

In the US, Earth Balance is one of Upfields biggest competitors. Earth Balance is a two-decades-old enterprise that makes vegan alternative butter spreads, nut butters and snacks. Its products are vegan, plant-based and non-GMO. The products have been designed to create a conscious, rewarding way of living. As part of its philosophy is its original commitment to being ethically plant-based. The palm oil it uses is a non-GMO, non-hydrogenated oil. Earth Balance is involved in the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), committed to environmentally and socially responsible palm oil production.

Upfield is also focused on sustainable palm oil. Upfield states that it, too, sources 100% of its palm oil from physically certified sustainable sources. Additionally, as part of its investment, Upfield is pouring 50 million into a new Food Science Centre in Wageningen, the Netherlands, that will focus on sustainability, health, and taste in plant-based food, according to foodnavigator.com.

The current eating scene is undergoing vast alterations. There are no clues as to which dining and cooking behaviors will last or fall away fast. What is clear is that the appeal of plant-based food alternatives is a growing customer desire. Revitalizing a brand by focusing on satisfying changing customer habits and attitudes keep brands relevant for enduring profitable growth.

10 Shadiest Things Aang Did In Avatar: The Last Airbender | CBR – CBR – Comic Book Resources

Aang is the main character of Avatar: The Last Airbender. While there aren't a lot of instances of him being shady, but here's 10 that stand out.

Aang, the protagonist ofAvatar: The Last Airbender, exists at the peak of adorableness his charismatic overtures, his love for peace, his innatenegotiation skills, his vegetarianism, his lack of toxic masculinity, all these features make him one of the most, if not the most, beloved animated characters of all time.

RELATED: Avatar: Toph Vs Korra: Who Wins This Bender Fight?

In the course of his mission,or in general, Aang has gotten himself involved in some rather uncharacteristic activities and has also been responsible for a few dubious decisions. There aren't a lot of instances like these, but here are ten that stand out the most.

Aang learns about being the Avatar at the tender age of twelve (it's normally sixteen, but the monks had the impending war weighing on their minds.)

He behavesimmaturely in this situation and escapes on Appa after learning that he would be transferred to the Eastern Air Temple in order to keep him apart from Gyatso. Aang faces the weight of his responsibilities when he wakes up, though, given that he nowhas a hunter: the banished Prince Zuko seeking to get overa few of his daddy issues.

In the Earthbending city of Omashu, Aang and little Bumi used the "mail route" channels as a personal roller-coaster/slide, deriving immense enjoyment from the rush. In fact, when Team Avatar arrives there over a century later, he forces them to join him in the activity, completely unheedful oftheir terror.

More importantly, Aang fails to consider the consequences of any potential accident; even though he assures his friends that his Airbending can protect them, this doesn't mean that innocent people won't be endangered (like the Cabbage merchant, for example.)

Aang's daredevil behavior extended into the animal kingdom, and hisdesire for this specific brand of novelty might actually be considered a minor form of abuse.

RELATED: Avatar: The Last Airbender - Why Fans Agree The Great Divide Is The Worst Episode In The Series

He is interested in penguin-sailing and riding hog monkeys, whom he claims do not enjoy the experience but "that's what makes it fun!" Aang also surfs on the backs of the Elephant Koi around Kyoshi Island, heedless of the poor thing's consent. At least the Avatar Kuruk surfed on mountain waves generated by his own Waterbending.

As an Airbender of immense repute, Aang naturally finds the coarseness of Firebending uncomfortable at first. Still, when he generates his first flame under the sage guidance of Master Jeong Jeong, his enthusiasm exceeds his skill level and he accidentallyinjures Katara's hands.

It's great that Aang is immediately apologetic, but he takes his contrition too far by vowing to, "never Firebend again." On a positive note, Katara conceives her own healing powers while soothing her palms in flowing water.

When Katara and Sokka begin talking about their home and childhood, Aang is upset because he is unable to share that bond with them. Rather than have a discussion about being left out, he decides to prevent his friends from "abandoning" him to go see their long-lost father, Hakoda, by concealingthe map leading to his locationwithin his outfit.

Later, when Bato celebrates Team Avatar for their greatest features Aang being trustworthiness hisshame forces him to reveal his indiscretion, but Sokka and Katara are far too furious with him to care at this point.

It is a paradoxical quirk of nature that permits Aang to hold on to his friends against their will but simultaneously lets himforsake them whenever he's in a bad mood: even if they aren't at fault.

RELATED: Avatar The Last Airbender: 10 Non-Benders That Would Give Aang A Good Fight

Upon discovering that Sandbenders had stolen his best friend, he flies into a torrential rage and just Airbends off into the Si Wong desert, leaving the others to fend for themselves. When Toph confirms the identity of the kidnappers, Aang morphs into the Avatar State andwould have probably vaporized the settlement if Katara hadn't calmed him down.

When Team Avatar infiltrates Wan Shi Tong's mega-library, the owl spirit only allows them to rifle through its tomes and manuscripts only if they swear never to "abuse the knowledge" obtained from his collection.

Of course, Sokka has to slip up at some point, and when Wan Shi Tong finds out that they actually plan to use the upcoming solar eclipse to attack the Fire Nation, he tries to stop them from escapingwhile sinking the building deeper into the desert. It is understandable, given the extenuating circumstances, but the Avatar should never take a vow they do not plan to keep.

Aang figures out how to unlock his chakraswith the helpof Guru Pathik, a decrepit old man bursting with luminous wisdom. However, he cannot get himself to open the seventh and final one, because this means abandoning his earthly ties (and there is no way he can even dream of doing that to Katara.)

Aang does try, at least, but second, he catches a whiff of his love being in danger, he abandons his training and rushes to rescue her.At the end,the chakragets blocked by Azula's perfectly-timed lightning bending blast, anyway.

While "touring" through the Fire Nation, the gang comes across a play based on their adventures watching themselves interact on stage results in unique responses from everyone, but Aang is clearly the most impacted.

RELATED: Avatar: Toph Vs Fire Lord Ozai: Who Wins This Bender Fight?

When he sulks about his feelings to Katara, she says that she can't give him a clear answer with everything else going on. Aang lets his hormones do the talking and try to attack her with a kiss, but this only makes the situation worse because Katara is now angry with him for ignoring her agency.

Ozai's staggering Firebending capabilities aside, his tendency towards manipulating and backstabbing made it imperative that he be stopped; except, Aang refuses to accept this outcome, and searches for the perfect balance between what the world desires and what he does.

Luckily, he finds the answer to his conundrum in the form of a Lion Turtle and takes Ozai's bending away (a technique repeated on the Bloodbender Yakonein the sequel.) What would he have done it didn't have this option, though? Would he have broken Air Nomad code and committed murder? Or would he have let everything burn?

Next Legend of Korra: 5 Couples Fans Loved (& 5 They Couldn't Stand)

Ajay's natural habitat is his bedroom, which means that his time is spent staring at his TV screen in a hypnotic coma. He tends to rant about the lack of quality programming in his life but the amount of content he consumes would make even Galactus gassy.

Vote of Thanks – savannahmagazine

At noon on August 21, 1920, three days after the ratification of the 19th amendment, 40 factories and boats in Savannah sounded their whistles in noisy celebration.

Savannah Evening Press reported that City Hall flew international code letters that signaled the message: We are victorious. At last, women of the United States had won the right to vote.

Six days later, a group of women met at the corner of York and Bull streets to march to the old courthouse on Wright Square. These women, according to Luciana Spracher, director of municipal archives for the City of Savannah, were led by Mrs. Paschal Strong, vice chairman of the League of Women Voters.

Joining her were local suffragists Sarah Berrien Casey Morgan, who co-founded the Savannah chapter of the Equal Suffrage Party in 1914; Lucy Barrow McIntire, president of the Savannah Suffrage Association; and Stella Akin, the first woman admitted to the State Bar of Georgia and one of the founding organizers of the Equal Suffrage Party.

When they arrived at the courthouse, the tax collector told them the books were closed. Unfazed, Strong proceeded to lecture the tax collector on the law, the brand new law, until he reluctantly handed over the register.

By the end of the day, approximately 50 women, including four Black women, were qualified as voters in the city of Savannah. A new era had begun.

Im sure there are many women who take having the right to vote for granted and cant imagine that women once had to fight so hard for it, Spracher says, and that many others men and women alike were fighting against them.

The fight was a long one: 72 years, to be exact, spanning back to the 1848 Seneca Falls Convention, the first womens rights convention.

For more than seven decades, national heroes like Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucretia Mott and Lucy Stone (all Northerners) tirelessly dedicated their lives to the cause.

Around the country, suffragists staged marches and protests, penned newspaper columns, distributed leaflets and picketed voting polls. Many of them never lived to cast a single vote.

Todays voters forget just how long it took to win the vote or how radical the idea was, especially in our area, notes Anastasia Sims, historian and professor emeritus at Georgia Southern University.

The South was the region of the U.S. where opposition to womens suffrage was the strongest, she says. Opposition can be summed up by the three Rs: religion, race and resistance to change and reform.

In the South and elsewhere, many believed the womens vote was a threat to both political and family institutions.

Housewives! You do not need a ballot to clean out your sink spout. A handful of potash and some boiling water is quicker and cheaper, advises one pamphlet widely distributed by the National Association Opposed to Women Suffrage.

Last spring, in anticipation of the centennial anniversary of the 19th Amendment, the City of Savannahs Municipal Archives hosted a lecture titled Womens Suffrage Comes to Georgia. Leading the program was Roger Smith, director of The Learning Center at Senior Citizens, Inc.

If you came here looking to be proud of the history of your state at the vanguard of giving women the right to vote, Smith began his lecture, to the sheepish laughter of the crowd, Im afraid youre going to be bitterly disappointed.

Smith is quick to point out that Georgia rushed to be the first state to reject the 19th amendment. Even after the amendment became law of the land, the Georgia legislature did not ratify it until 1970, a symbolic gesture by and large. (For the record, Georgia was not the last to ratify the 19th amendment: North Carolinas ratification came in 1971 and Mississippis in 1984!)

In Georgia and all over the South, says Smith in a recent interview, anti-suffrage voices greatly outnumbered those in favor of universal suffrage. But there are heroes in this story who are even more admirable for being in the minority.

Change arrives not in the sounds ofthe chorus, but in the single voice of abrave individual who dares to sing. ForSmith and others the story of suffrage inthe South is the story of the women whobrought the fight here, to our region.

One such woman was Helen Augusta Howard, from Columbus, Georgia, who founded the Georgia Woman Suffrage Association in 1890, at the age of 25.

Original members of this organization numbered only six: Howard, her mother, and her four sisters. Still, some in her family spoke out against this unnatural woman who never married, practiced vegetarianism, and, worse, was known to wear trousers.

Remarkably, Howard helped convince the National American Woman Suffrage Association to move its annual convention to Atlanta in 1895 in order to bring their radical message to the Deep South. Speaking to the convention she argued: The Georgia [news]papers and the far Southern papers still insist that women do not want the ballot. Until you hold a convention in the South and prove to them that this is not so, they will keep on saying this.

Howards sister, Miriam Howard Dubose, in her address titled Georgia Curiosities explained further that among the many curiosities in our region were men who love their women too deeply to accord them justice, and women who are taken in with such affection.

Like other early Georgian suffragists, Mary Latimer McLendon, considered the mother of womens suffrage in Georgia, similarly forsook affairs of the kitchen in pursuit of the ballot box.

McLendon served as the president of the Howard-founded GWSA for nearly two decades, writing newspaper columns, organizing parades, distributing pamphlets and campaigning to the Georgia legislature in an attempt to win suffrage at the state level.

Although Latimer McLendon joyously lived to see the 19th amendment ratified, women of Georgia were barred from the 1920 general election due to a technicality the state legislature refused to waive: women failed to register prior to the spring deadline.

The tragic part of the story, Smith notes, is that Latimer McLendon died in 1921 without ever exercising the franchise in her own right. One hundred years later, Smith hopes Georgians and Americans alike can see the parallels between matters of access as highlighted by last centurys womens suffrage and todays voting rights.

This, too, is the hope of Rebecca Rolfes, sitting president of the League of Women Voters of Coastal Georgia. Its remarkable to me how little our work has changed in a hundred years, Rolfes says.

The womens suffrage movement worked to first win and then maintain the right to vote for half the population. As the guardian of that legacy, the League of Women Voters was and is a grassroots movement that registers and educates voters, that works to protect the right to vote and the integrity of elections. The Leagues tagline is, Empowering Voters. Defending Democracy. Thats what it was about during the suffrage movement, and thats what its still about.

Rolfes points to Mamie George Williams as one example of a heroic civic servant who fought for the vote at home. A native Savannahian who graduated from Beach Institute (now The Beach Institute African- American Cultural Center) and Atlanta University (now Clark Atlanta University), Williams is credited with waging a massive voter registration campaign in 160 counties, which resulted in 40,000 qualified Black women voters in Georgia.

In 1924, she made history when she became the first Black woman in the nation to serve on the National Republican Committee.

Williams once said, To many politics is a sordid game. But to me it means the getting of everything worthwhile out of it for the race.

The thing suffragists all had incommon was a relentless focus on thegoal; the ability to keep their eyes on theprize regardless of the circumstances.Maintaining that focus becomes harderand harder the farther you go from thechange itself, Rolfes says.

One hundred years ago, when the bells and whistles of Savannah sounded out in celebration, not everyone was jubilant.

Now, the image of American women being persuaded to give up their vote for a faucet cleaner of potash and boiling water seems downright absurd.

But a few determined activists, some still alive to witness the triumph, convinced all Savannahians to set aside their chores for a while and head to the voting booth. Thats a lesson we can all remember today.
