Ex-Vegan Miley Cyrus Says It’s ‘Over The Top’ To Be Invested In Other People’s Diets – Plant Based News

Miley Cyrus says it is 'a little over the top' to judge other people's diets

Ex-vegan Miley Cyrus says it is 'over the top' for vegans to be 'so invested in other people's diets'.

The celebrity recently revealed that she has ditched her vegan diet and now eats fish while appearing on a recent episode of Joe Rogan's podcast.

The star, who has since been blasted for spreading misinformation, said she needed to eat fish as her 'brain wasn't functioning properly', and is now 'eating for her brain type'.

Responding to Cyrus' revelations, Rogan said the vegans 'would come for her' after admitting she now eats animals, and the singer replied that they will come for her, but it's ok, as she is 'used to people coming for me'.

She added: "Listen, I give home, I have 22 animals on my farm in Nashville, I've got 22 in my house in Calabasas, like I'm doing what I need to do for the animals, okay? But when it comes to my brain - you're not vegan, you can't be vegan and living this kind and being this quick, but sure you can, some people can, I cannot [sic]."

Rogan asked what veganism did to her brain, and Cyrus replied: "Now I'm so much sharper than I was and I think that I was at one point pretty malnutritioned [sic]."

Now Cyrus has discussed the situation further during this morning's edition of the Edge morning show, as reported by NewsHub. The singer said she was 'expecting some backlash from the vegan community'.

"When I was vegan I was really worried about other people's diets and really judgey... it's a little over the top to be so invested in other people's diets," she said.

"If I was feeling at my best... and could learn how to live at a 110 percent living a vegan lifestyle I would have done... I just didn't get there."

Despite Cyrus' claims about a vegan diet and brain function, ND Dr. Matthew Nagra has spoken out about how 'fatigue (mental or physical) can be caused by a myriad of issues, which may not be diet-related, and theres no indication that she was seeking any medical care'.

"In addition, its important to note that the research on omega-3 supplements (EPA/DHA) and cognitive function is mixed, with potential benefit in older adults specifically. Of course, fish is a source of these omega-3s, but so is a vegan algae-based supplement," he wrote in an Instagram post.

"That being said, it is unclear if vegans even need to supplement since we produce EPA and DHA from short-chain omega-3s (ALA) in foods like flax and our levels dont vary much from fish eaters. Furthermore, those with genetically elevated levels dont seem to be protected against Alzheimers disease, which is why I just think of these supplements as an extra safety measure, to ensure you get enough."

He added: "Something that should give pause is when someone notices drastic improvements with a small dietary change. This SCREAMS placebo effect. On a physiological level, its impossible for a few meals of seafood to drastically change omega-3 levels, especially within the brain.

"This becomes even more likely when a vegan has constantly been told that their diet is deficient by those who clearly have not seen the data. We can start to believe itThat being said, we have no clue what Miley was actually eating.

"So before you see all the carnivore doctors posting about this negative anecdote, even though meat is a poor source of omega-3s, remember that an anecdote isnt science and the overwhelming body of evidence suggests that vegans/vegetarians have lower risk of many non-communicable diseases and all-cause mortality. Theres a reason that health professionals like @drgarthdavis and @brendadavisrd continue to thrive without any signs of slowing down."

Hop on the bandvegan – Hindustan Times

In a pandemic hit world, humans are making humane choices. There is a desire to safeguard health, protect the planet and eradicate unethical treatment of animals. And veganism offers an opportunity to make a difference. It entails a plant-based diet and abstention from all animal foods such as meat, dairy and eggs.

Chef Sanjay B Dasari , Executive Chef, The Ashok, says, The number of people embracing veganism is on a noticeable rise. Today, customers are more aware of what they eat and want to live a conscious life. With the growing demand, the repertoire of vegan dishes is also expanding and gaining popularity. More and more restaurants are experimenting with taste, and avoiding dairy and other non-vegan ingredients.

The growing inclination towards conscious eating habits, backed by health benefits is set to drive veganism as a way of life in the days to come.

Chef Arun Sundaraj, Executive Chef, Taj Mahal, says, During the pandemic the need to eat healthy has seen a new high primarily because people are getting educated on what it is that they are actually eating. India has a lot many communities that support vegetarianism so for a person to eat a vegan meal in India is not difficult as there are a large variety of products that they can eat.

Vegan or plant based food eliminates any kind of saturated fats which is the main reason for the increase of cholesterol and other heart related diseases. It is very important to maintain a balanced meal especially during the pandemic when outdoor activities have considerably gone down. Veganism is one of the best practices to follow at this time and that is precisely why it is gaining traction, says chef Vikramjit Roy who has come up witha Pan Asian menu at Hello Panda.

Long gone are the days when people thought vegans only ate salads! With imaginative menuscoming up, we know it isnt a fleeting trend.

Chef Ashish Singh, Corporate Chef, Cafe Delhi Heights, says, It was a misconception that vegan food cannot be delicious. We have made sure to curate a menu which is elaborate and interesting as well.

This Black-owned business is bringing vegan treats to the masses, one cookie at a time – Soapbox Cincinnati

When it comes to a niche, a Cincinnati-based purveyor of vegan treats is challenging norms three times over.

Like Moms Only Vegan (LMOV) is a woman-owned, Black-owned, and family-owned enterprise thats taking the Queen Citys food scene by storm.

Naimah Sams, LMOVs communications and branding manager, is the daughter and granddaughter of the co-founders, Naomi Sams and Sakile Chenzira, respectively.

The mother and daughter team started the business, and eventually Naimahs immediate family found themselves in the mix, too.

According to Naimah, her mothers natural knack for the culinary arts was evident to her from a young age.

My upbringing was always a very exciting food journey, she says. My mom would make conventional staples of the American diet, like mac and cheese only vegan. And for birthdays we always had cake and ice cream. So, I never felt left out of anything.

Eventually the word got out about her baking prowess and Naomi decided to take her hobby to the next level. She made a name for herself with her cookies in particular the chocolate chip version by setting up shop at Northside Farmers Market.

The cookies proved to be a good foray into commercial baking, says Naimah, as they were portable and scalable. And perhaps most importantly, they exposed people to the accessibility and versatility of vegan food.

People were like, Man, this is amazing, she says. And thankfully, the people were already pretty open to the idea of veganism even if they weren't vegan.

Naimah says eventually they expanded with a booth at Findlay Market and theyve further cemented their brand identity, while building a loyal following and adding cupcakes to their lineup.

Speaking of identity, Naimah says being Black-owned and vegan makes them a bit of an anomaly.

I think that there is a misconception in a way about Black people and veganism, she explains. We don't get as much exposure as maybe our white counterparts do. But we're out here and we are having fun with our food and we are making a lot of waves through our creations.

So, whats next for this cruelty-free brand? According to Naimah, the booths at the farmers markets have been a great way to learn how to run a storefront, on a micro level.

Its been a great learning experience working out of an incubator kitchen and then also working out of Findlay Market to give us an understanding of how it would look if we got our own spot, which of course is our ultimate goal, she says. But looking to the future, we'd really love to have a complete LMOV-branded bakery. What we want to do is create a gathering place for people to come in and eat all the vegan sweets they want.

Regarding community building, Naimah says they would also like to forge more partnerships with local restaurants and stores to further expand their reach.

Global Vegan Women’s Fashion Market Size, Share & Trends Analysis Report 2020-2027: Footwear Accounted for 41.3% of Revenue in 2019 -…

DUBLIN--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The "Vegan Women's Fashion Market Size, Share & Trends Analysis Report by Product (Accessories, Clothing & Apparel, Footwear), by Distribution Channel (E-commerce, Specialty Stores), by Region, and Segment Forecasts, 2020 - 2027" report has been added to ResearchAndMarkets.com's offering.

Increasing the inclination of people towards cruelty-free fashion is an important aspect of driving the demand for fashion apparel made from vegan material.

People in developed countries, especially in the U.S, the U.K., France, and Germany have become more receptive to the concepts of veganism and have been following this practice in all walks of life, including food habits and clothing. These consumers do not mind paying higher prices for vegan women's fashion, thus fueling the growth of the market.

Enthused by the opportunity existence, companies pertaining to vegan fashion not only focus on providing the latest styles but also cater to cultural trends and burgeoning style quotient to attract a varied set of consumers through constant product launch. For instance, in August 2019, an Amsterdam-based denim brand called Kings of Indigo, announced itself to be a fully-vegan company with the launch of no new cotton' capsule collection- Re Gen, offering a limited edition of jeans and jacket collection for women, men, and kids. Such developments are expected to create a healthy demand for the product over the forecast period.

Based on the product, the vegan footwear segment led the market and accounted for 41.3% share of the global revenue in 2019. The growing popularity of animal safety among consumers has goaded established footwear manufacturers to offer elegant footwear made from natural ingredients to pique the interest of the informed customers. For instance, in November 2019, Reebok International Limited, a company owned by Adidas AG, unveiled the design for its first plant-based running shoe, called Floatride GROW. The upper part of the shoe is made primarily from eucalyptus whereas its soles are made from castor beans and natural rubber. The company had launched this design two years after it started selling a vegan version of its famed Newport Classic shoes made with cotton and corn.

By distribution channel, specialty stores dominated the market and accounted for 31.4% share of the global revenue in 2019. Wide product range, offers, and discounts attracting a larger number of consumers are the key strategies opted by such channels to increase revenue and footfall in any store. In addition, these stores keep their stores more updated with the latest vegan fashion trends in the market, thus attracting more consumers who are looking for variety in the product.

Covid-19 pandemic has affected the sales of vegan women's fashion adversely as people have become more focused on their buying behavior and consider avoiding buying fashionable apparel or accessories. The vegan fashion market is in the burgeoning stage and has been severely impacted by the lockdown condition and supply chain disruption. According to the entrepreneur.com, the U.K. apparel sector is expected to be the worst affected with a decline of more than 41% in the usual spending by consumers since the outbreak of the coronavirus.

North America dominated the market for vegan women's fashion and accounted for 34.6% share of the global revenue in 2019. Growth in the market is powered by the strong presence of manufacturers, including Whimsy & Row and Reformation, along with a well-developed supply chain in the region. Moreover, people in countries such as the U.S. have a large number of animal rights organizations, such as the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and The Anti-Cruelty Society, which have been promoting the concept of veganism.

The overall objective is smartphone-enabled, real-time, on the scene reporting of news, interviews, observations, and happenings anywhere in the World and within seconds and not hours. Now, news is reported with a smartphone: no heavy and expensive cameras or even a laptop are necessary. The secondary objective is faster, and very inexpensive media content news production and distribution. We have found there is a disconnect between post length and time to product and revenue generated. With this, the problem is far less, though by no means solved. Zennie62Media is constantly working to improve the system network coding and seeks interested content and media technology partners.

VEGAN NUMBERS RISING FASTER THAN METHANE

Research by culinary website Chefs Pencil reveals a disturbing rise of veganism among previously interesting people.

Australia is the second-most vegan nation in the world, behind only the UK, where food was already dangerously lacking in flavour.

Many interesting conversations about politics, philosophy and The Bachelor are being rudely interrupted by earnest declarations:

Did I mention Im vegan?

Did I mention that I mentioned Im vegan?

You are rolling your eyes at me it could be Mad Cows Disease.

A vegan named Megan said, There are too many methane-producing cows warming the planet.

Meat-lovers declared they are working on the problem.

POX AMERICANA

Fifty per cent of Americans say the other 50 per cent of Americans are communist riot-rabblers.

50 per cent of Americans say the other 50 per cent of Americans are fascist neck-kneelers. Both sides are 100 per cent right.

Joe Bidens most attractive asset is that after his Inauguration speech, he will drop dead. Donald Trump claims Trump is the best man to fix the hateful chaos caused by Trump.

Fortunately for the safety of democracy, most Americans dont vote. Trumps followers are expected to not vote. Twice.

WORLD STOPS AS FORMER PMs SAY SOMETHING OR OTHER

The former prime ministers of a little known island somewhere in the Pacific (or Indian?) Ocean said something or other about whatever.

Kevin Rudd, loved by all who are Kevin Rudd, has a popularity rating of .07 with a 100 per cent margin of error.

Former PMs Paul Keating, John Howard and Malcolm Turnbulltwang announced their own barbecue-stoppers. But no one is having barbecues.

Thankfully, Tony Abbott kept quietly working for the English, as always.

OSCAR AWARDS IS A BOYS NAME. DISCUSS.

Movies must meet diversity standards in order to qualify for Best Picture at the Oscars.

To win an Oscar, movies must have at least one main character from an under-represented group such as non-Marvel superheroes and North Korean comedians.

Meanwhile, right-wing groups attacked Hollywoods negative stereotyping of minorities such as serial-killers, Nazis and anyone on the Dark Side of the Force. A spokesman in a Make America Germany Again hat said, Hollywood gives pure evil a bad name.

The new guidelines are a Woke-up call, said a non-species-specific entity.

Luckily, male-dominated movies featuring wars, gladiators and Moon landings have never been popular.

Ohio State study shows rubbery properties help RNA nanoparticles target tumors efficiently and quickly leave body – The Highland County Press

A new study by researchers atThe Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute(OSUCCC James) shows that RNA nanoparticles have elastic and rubbery properties that help explain why these particles target tumors so efficiently and why they possess lower toxicity in animal studies.RNA nanoparticles show great promise for the targeted delivery of anticancer drugs. Understanding their structure and behavior is essential for their possible future use.

This study, published in the journalACS Nano, reveals that RNA nanoparticles have elastic and rubbery properties that enable the molecules to stretch and return to their normal shape. Researchers say that these properties could help the particles target tumors by enabling them to slip through the poorly formed walls of tumor blood vessels and enter a tumor mass.

The researchers further proved that the same rubbery properties enable the RNA nanoparticle to slip through the kidneyfiltersto excrete into the urine half an hour after systemic injection, thereby eliminating them from the body relatively quickly. That, in turn, could reduce retention of the anticancer agent in vital organs, lowering an agents toxicity.

We show that RNA nanoparticles have a flexibility that allows for the assembly of molecular structures that have stretchable angles, says study leader and corresponding authorPeixuan Guo, PhD, professor in the College of Pharmacy and theSylvan G. Frank Endowed Chair in Pharmaceutics and Drug Delivery. Guo also is in the OSUCCC JamesTranslational Therapeutics Research Program.

These findings demonstrate the rubbery properties of RNA nanoparticles and why these molecules hold great promise for industrial and biomedical applications, especially as carriers for targeted delivery of anticancer drugs, says Guo, who directs Ohio StatesCenter for RNA Nanobiotechnology and Nanomedicine.

For this study, Guo and his colleagues tested the elasticity of nucleic acid polymers by stretching and relaxing individual RNA nanoparticle, while subjecting RNA nanoparticles to elasticity studies using dual-beam optical tweezers built in Guo lab. Finally, they used animal models to study the biodistribution, excretion and retention of RNA nanoparticles. This included measuring excretion of the particles in urine, along with the study on the effect of their shape and size.

Key findings include:

RNA nanoparticles are stretchable and shrinkable, like rubber, even after repeated extension and relaxation with multiple repeats by optical tweezers.

In animal models, RNA nanoparticles show stronger cancer targeting and lower accumulation in healthy organs when compared to gold and iron nanoparticles of similar size.

Also in animal models, within half hour after systemic injection, RNA nanoparticles that were 5, 10 and 20 nm in size were filtered by the kidneys and retained their original structure in urine, even though the upper limit of kidney pore size for filtration is generally 5.5 nm. This suggests that the larger RNA nanoparticles slipped like rubber and amoeba through filtration pores, then returned to their original size and shape in urin.

Overall, Guo says, we believe these findings further support the development of RNA nanoparticles for targeted delivery of anticancer drugs or therapeutic RNA.

United Seniors of Oakland, Alameda County Present the virtual Healthy Living Festival – Livermore Independent

Alameda County Supervisor Nate Miley and United Seniors of Oakland and Alameda County (USOAC) are excited to present the 17th Annual Healthy Living Festival virtually to seniors, their friends, and family members, on Thursday, Sept. 17, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Nothing will stop my commitment to seniors especially when many of them are directly impacted and socially isolated as a result of this pandemic, said Miley. The gratitude seniors bestow on USOAC and my office every year following the Healthy Living Festival was motivation enough to find creative new solutions to the challenges of social distancing and shelter-in-place, and I believe we are doing a fantastic job for this years virtual event.

Seniors can still expect many of the highlights from previous years, including live entertainment, a free meal and a swag bag if they register in advance at tinyurl.com/hlf2020. There will even be a virtual zoo walk for participants to enjoy from the safety of their residences, courtesy of longtime HLF partner the Oakland Zoo.

For nearly 20 years, the Health Living Festival has served as an integral part of Miley and USOACs commitment to Alameda County seniors. The festival promotes healthy senior living by providing a welcoming hub of critical health information, comprehensive array of senior resources, and fun physical activities. The festival also empowers seniors to shape the world in which they live by encouraging civic action on issues that affect their quality of life through community organization.

With strong support from local organizations, Eden Health District and Kaiser Permanente, County offices including Alameda County Department of Public Health and the Alameda County Department of Adult and Aging, and honorary hosts such as Congresswoman Barbara Lee, Mayor Libby Schaff, and other county elected officials, USOAC and Miley are thrilled to continue the proud tradition of the Health Living Festival this year and many more to come.

Esports Players Putting Health on the Line With Unhealthy Eating and Exercise Habits – TEO – The Esports Observer

While the debate over whether or not esports players are athletes in their own right rages, one of the caveats in that debate is the difference in the physicality on display between traditional sports and esports. Couple the sedentary aspect of esports with a lack of funding and the expectation of eating or drinking products supplied by sponsors, and youll see that a lot of players struggle with eating a healthy diet. And while some esports organizations are hiring nutritionists and even chefs for their players, that is the exception, not the rule. And that means there are hundreds if not thousands of players who are facing health risks because of poor diets.

Dr. Lindsey Migliore, an esports medicine physician known as GamerDoc, has consulted and worked with some of the top teams in the world, and believes there is a large gap between health and wellness and how a lot of esports organizations are addressing the subject.

I think that esports definitely has a nutrition problem, Migliore said. Its part of a larger lack of health and wellness that can be partially attributed to how new esports is.

The International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health posted a peer-reviewed study on the health behavior of video game and esports players in Germany noting the following: Prolonged screen time, accompanied by long periods of sedentary behavior are recognized as risk factors for numerous chronic diseases and all-cause mortality. Since gaming and esports, by their very nature, require long periods of sedentary screen time, it stands to reason that such players pose a high-risk group in exceptional need of health promotion.

Taylor Johnson, chief performance engineer at Statespace, who has a Masters of Science degree in Exercise Science, Rehabilitation Science from California University of Pennsylvania, sees esports at a tipping point with regards to how serious organizations are about talking to players about health and nutrition while helping them live a healthy lifestyle.

Were kind of coming up on this tipping point where the conversations are being had more frequently around health and wellness, Johnson said. In terms of esports, the overall health and wellness of players, those conversations are starting to happen more frequently. A lot of the professional teams are doing a better job of thinking about holistic models for their players and offering resources and education.

As conversations start to take place between organizations and players around health and nutrition , some see hurdles to overcome to create and maintain best practices. While some larger organizations can flex the power of their large budget and hire chefs and nutritionists, there are a lot of successful mid-tier organizations that simply dont have the money for that level of attention. Migliore believes that there are available options for every esports organization that wants more information. And if organizations do not have a staff member to consult with players on good health practices there is one person who should wear that hatthe coach.

In traditional sports, you have the athletic trainer who is really the quarterback for a players care, Migliore said. For esports, its the coach. But in esports, coaches are usually just players who have aged out at the age of 23, so they dont have any background in this or a lot of things. So just giving coaches a basic understanding of heres a simple carb, heres a complex carb. Heres what your players should be eating the day of competition. Heres what your players should be eating on a training day. You dont need to necessarily hire a nutritionist to evaluate each individual players diet. All you need to do is have one talk to your coach for a couple of hours.

Understanding the reality that for most organizations the coach is the person who is closest to players personally and is able to constantly observe player habits, Johnson would also like to see more time being spent teaching coaches how to help players develop a healthier lifestyle when it comes to what they put in their bodies.

We need a better educational framework for coaches, Johnson said. We need to help the career and coaching development track and really build out a more methodical and comprehensive approach to build out a well-rounded coach. I speak with a lot of coaches from time to time and theyll call me and say, Hey, like Im having this issue with the player. Id like to see more of that when it comes to player lifestyle, eating, and nutritional habits.

The next area of concern that both Migliore and Johnson point out that isnt immediately apparent is the fact that many players who are sponsored by companies that supply performance drinks and other types of energy or focus related products are probably not drinking enough water. And while they do admit they arent inside every players practice facility or stream, they have come across players that have come very close to replacing water with energy drinks, something that could lead to long-term health problems if not taken in moderation.

Yeah, its, its not sustainable to be honest [replacing water with energy drinks]. Its no wonder considering the habits we are seeing in regards to how long people can play, said Dr. Migliore. Energy drinks are full of sugar and caffeine and additives. You dont need more caffeine that is in a cup of coffee. If you want a caffeine boost have some coffee and cut out all that other junk.

Migliore went on to say that drinking too many energy drinks will actually dehydrate instead of hydrate and that it can be very stressful on the kidneys. In fact, she likens some esports players to those medical interns who work upwards of 80 hours a week while constantly drinking energy drinks.

A study on medical interns who were working 80, 90, a 100 hours a week found that a significant portion of them qualified as being in renal failure because they werent drinking water, Migliore said. They were drinking coffee and energy drinks all day. Unfortunately, we dont have the data behind the long-term effects of that on esports athletes. But, I can only imagine that its not going to be good for your kidneys.

Johnson has seen this type of habit up close as he was one the VPs of performance for Infinite Esports and Entertainment working with numerous teams. He has seen what happens when players continue to consume a large number of energy drinks while maintaining a poor diet.

Players will have an energy drink and then theyll have like a hot pocket or theyll have like a bowl of cereal, which depending on the level of training may not be bad, but lets be honest. Chances are theyre not going to get [nutritional balance]. Theyre the core nutrient needs and nutrient-dense food.

What both Migliore and Johnson can agree on is that while having a good understanding of nutritional science in regards to players can be time-consuming and difficult at times, there is one thing everyone can do in order to start living a healthier lifestyle. Stop the bad habits first and make sure you are adding an exercise program to your life. Then you can start to implement a more complex regiment.

Anyone whos ever tried to lose weight or maintain a healthy lifestyle knows that diet is a huge component, Migliore said. And I would argue more than exercise is needed in being healthy. Because of that sedentary lifestyle, gamers have less lean body mass and they have more body fat content, which sets you up for aging out of esports. There is now published data that the lifestyles and the diet come with supreme health risks for gamers. So yeah, I think diet and nutrition can be supremely beneficial to counteracting that lifestyle.

Dr. Jeff Tinsley on healthy living, enjoying life, and giving back – Jill Lopez

Dr. Jeff Tinsley is a 2017 graduate of Tuskegee University. He is currently a Dermatology Resident at the Animal Dermatology Clinic of Louisville, and has completed a small animal rotating internship at Blue Pearl.

While dermatology isn't a common specialty for most veterinarians, Dr. Jeff chose it for good reason. Skin disorders, ear problems, and other issues related to dermatology are one of the top reasons pets are brought to the vet. Although skin problems aren't usually ife threatening, they can make the lives of animals miserable, and may even make their owners consider euthanasia.

Dr. Jeff discovered that he could help these patients receive much needed relief, and a give them a new lease on life. He realized what a huge difference he could make for pets and owners by just fixing the skin. This small but incredibly important change in the lives of animals is why he became a veterinarian, and has fueled his interest in dermatology.

While he is dedicated to his career and passionate about dermatology, it isn't his only interest. Outside of work, he is a CrossFit guru, and his healthy lifestyle includes lots of running, mostly with this adorable dog named Renly. He is also passionate about food.

It's hard to imagine a world outside of veterinary care, but if he wasn't a vet, Dr. Jeff believes he would be a nutritionist. It would be quite interesting to counsel people through their health journeys and curate each persons diet for their specific needs. We really are what we eat!

Dr. Jeff is passionate about his career, but he's also passionate about the communities that he is a part of daily. His mission in life is to give back to the black community, the vet community, and the LGBTQ+ community.

Dr. Jeff tells us more:

Best career advice I received:

If you really want to do something youll find a way. If you dont youll find an excuse.

Most agonizing career decision I ever made:

Deciding not to enter the match during my rotating internship. After my 2nd year of vet school I shadowed a surgeon and was dead-set on getting a surgical residency. I am a planner. This was the plan. A few months into my first internship I realized that Surgery wasnt going to be for me. I struggled mentally for months deciding my next step. Eventually, I chose to go into General Practice and it was the best thing for me at that time.

Books that left a last impression on me:

Becoming - by Michelle Obama was a very special book for me. It is the memoir of former United States first lady Michelle Obama. The book talks about her roots and how she found her voice, as well as her time in the White House, and her public health campaign.

How I clear my head after a stressful day

Number one for me is definitely exercise. In the before times, I was doing CrossFit 3 times a week. Its not for everyone, but sweating it out for an hour in HIIT-style training puts me in the zone, helps me release endorphins and dissociate from the world.

My number two is having a beer. I have a special love for local craft breweries. My favorite is picking up a six pack or filling up a growler of whatevers on draft and just relaxing on the couch.

Advice for my younger self

Dear, Past Jeff. Take a personality quiz on how you learn best early-on in college. It will definitely say youre an auditory and visual learner. Instead of torturing yourself with endless reading-based study sessions; focus more time on videos and podcast-style lectures. You will still have to read a lot when you get to vet school, but you will retain so much more and enjoy school more if you focus on the way you like to learn.

What everyone should try once in their lifetime

Everyone should travel outside of the US. Specifically to a country where English isnt the primary language. Obviously this is something that requires money, so that is limiting, but if youre in school you may be able to apply for a study abroad scholarship like I did. I once went to Costa Rica for a Maymester. Experiences like this are so helpful for expanding our cultural competence and immersing ourselves in other lifestyles. It was a good reminder that there are rich cultures outside of our own. It was amazing to embrace and celebrate the differences of other groups of people.

My mission in life:

My mission in life is to give back to the black community, give back to the vet community, and give back to the LGBTQ+ community. I want to lead by example and be a mentor to others.

175000 Patients a Year Will Benefit From Healthy Lifestyle Partnership – Adventist Review

September 8, 2020

By: Adventist Record, and Adventist Review

Adventist HealthCare has welcomed healthy lifestyle advocate ELIA Wellness under its corporate umbrella.

Promoting a healthy lifestyle has been a priority of Adventist HealthCares Sydney Adventist Hospital in Australia since the hospital first opened in 1903 as a sanitarium, where people learned to stay well. It has also been a continuing aim of Adventist HealthCare's other health-care service, San Day Surgery Hornsby, the first purpose-built day surgery in New South Wales when it opened in 1986.

ELIA Wellness was formed in 2016 to champion lifestyle medicine in research, policy, and practice. Its advocacy to help individuals achieve whole-person health includes the 7 Dimensions of Wellness Index, an analysis tool used in their wellness-enhancing programs.

ELIA Wellness will be financially independent from Sydney Adventist Hospital; however, it will benefit from the alliance and complement the hospitals mission of helping promote health and healing of the body, mind, and spirit of patients, staff, and the wider community.

This is an exciting advance for both Adventist HealthCare and ELIA Wellness, said Adventist HealthCare chief executive officer Brett Goods.

At Adventist HealthCare, we relish our role as a provider of acute, comprehensive, and expert care to meet our community's needs when they are most vulnerable.

Critically, however, the Adventist principles of a healthy and active lifestyle underpin the breadth of the wholistic care that we aim to offer our 175,000 patients a year.

In providing that care, we are buoyed by the increasing recognition of the joys and the physical and mental rewards of actively seeking and following a healthy lifestyle.

ELIA Wellnesss resounding success with its Live More Project, Wellness App, Lifestyle Medicine Summit, Partner training program, and proactive educational health and wellness resources provide an opportunity to respond to community interest.

We are proud that the wider community will benefit from research and advice with the potential to help prevent and manage chronic disease as a result of collaboration with ELIA Wellness.

This integration will help complement our care for our community. It is a forward-thinking step of which we are delighted to be part.

ELIA Wellness executive director Geraldine Przybylko agrees. We are thrilled that the extensive work of ELIA Wellness will be expanded by its association with Adventist HealthCare and Sydney Adventist Hospital and will further enable us to empower and transform the wider community to achieve whole-person health, she said.

The Adventist community has long understood the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. In fact, Seventh-day Adventists in Loma Linda, California, United States, were identified by Dan Buettner inNational Geographicas one of five regions in the world or Blue Zones where people live healthier for longer. Adventist health principles and lifestyle were key contributors to their longevity, with Adventists living up to 10 quality years longer than the rest of the nation.

Adventists today welcome the growing body of scientific evidence confirming that lifestyle interventions can help prevent, manage, or arrest disease, with lifestyle medicine being one of the most exciting and fastest-growing healthcare disciplines today.

The Anti-Aging Medicine market to project Exorbitant Growth between 2018 and 2026 – The Daily Chronicle

Longer life-expectancy is a cumulative effect of a healthy lifestyle and favorable environmental conditions. A trend of continuously increasing life expectancy has been a witness since a decade, primarily because of advances in medical sciences and treatment of chronic life-threatening diseases, availability of clean water and environment and other factors. This trend is projected to further show even more exponential growth graph owing to the anti-aging medicines, stem cell therapeutics, genetic screening and interventions, and high-tech biomedicines. American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine claimed that anti-aging medicines can add up to 10-20 years to the life expectancy of a human. Today, a combination of calorie-restricted diet, regular exercise, and anti-aging medicines are claimed to slow the process of senescence and aging. Various medicines used against the treatment of acute or chronic diseases can be considered as anti-aging medicines, however, to define anti-aging medicine market we have considered only the drugs that are directly prescribed and used for delaying the effects of aging.

The constantly growing demand to look young in old individuals and to remain young and youthful in young people drive the anti-aging market. The influence of aesthetics from the fashion and television industry propel the demand to retain the features and energy of younger age in old people. Additionally, the increasing number of anti-aging medicine manufacturers in the decade contribute to higher availability of the anti-aging medicine resulting in expansion of the global anti-aging medicine market. However, skeptical approach to anti-aging medicine as being an external stimulator of cell-cycles is a restraint to the expansion of anti-aging medicine market.

Donkey Milk: Benefits, Uses, and Downsides – Healthline

Donkey milk may sound like a trendy newcomer to the milk market, but in reality, it has been around for thousands of years.

It has become popular again recently, especially in parts of Europe, appealing both to adventurous foodies who want to try new foods and beverages, as well as those who aim to eat natural foods with health benefits.

This article looks into the benefits, uses, and downsides of donkey milk.

Donkeys belong to the Equidae family, which also includes horses and zebras. Various breeds of domesticated donkeys live all over the world, and like many other mammals, female donkeys, known as jennies, have been raised for thousands of years for their milk (1).

Donkey milk has a long history of medicinal and cosmetic uses. Hippocrates reportedly used it as a treatment for arthritis, coughs, and wounds. Cleopatra is said to have maintained her soft, smooth skin with donkey milk baths (2).

It has antimicrobial properties and is used as a folk medicine treatment for infections, including whooping cough, as well as viruses in parts of Africa and India (2).

Compared with milk from other dairy animals like cows, goats, sheep, buffalo, and camels, donkey milk most closely resembles human breast milk. In fact, it was first used in the 19th century to feed orphaned infants (3).

Donkey farming is becoming more popular. However, most farms are small with 530 milking jennies. Each produces only about 4 cups (1 liter) of milk per day. Thus, the milk is somewhat hard to find and considered a specialty item (1, 4, 5).

Raw donkey milk is usually sold at farms where donkeys are raised. In the United States, federal law prohibits the transportation of raw milk across state lines. Some larger farms may sell pasteurized donkey milk (5, 6).

Its more widely available as freeze-dried powdered milk and an ingredient in some European-imported chocolate bars. In Italy, where its especially popular, donkey milk is used in some infant formulas and as a medical food (4, 7).

Although it might seem like a new trend, people have been drinking donkey milk for thousands of years. Its somewhat hard to find unless you live near a donkey farm, but you can purchase powdered donkey milk from some manufacturers.

Nutritionally, donkey milk is very similar to human breast and cows milk. It provides vitamins and minerals along with protein (2, 8).

Its lower in fat, and thus calories, and has more vitamin D than other milks. Most of the calories in donkey milk come from carbs, which are in the form of lactose (2, 8).

This chart lists the nutrition information for 3 ounces (100 mL) of donkey, human breast, and whole, vitamin-D-fortified cows milk (8, 9, 10, 11):

Most of the protein in dairy milk comes from casein and whey. Casein is the protein most people with an allergy to cows milk react to. Donkey milk is similar to human breast milk in that its low in casein and higher in whey (12).

The whey protein in donkey milk is notable for its antimicrobial properties. It contains compounds that can prevent the growth of viruses and bacteria (1, 3, 12).

In lab studies, it prevents the spread of bacteria, including Listeria monocytogenes, Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus (1, 3, 12).

Donkey milk is low in fat and rich in carbs. The protein in donkey milk is largely whey, which has compounds that can help prevent the growth of some bacteria and viruses.

Fans of donkey milk often drink it for its health benefits, which go beyond its nutritional content. In particular, it has gained a lot of attention as an allergen-friendly and immune-boosting food.

Compared with the protein in cows milk, which has about five times more casein than whey, the protein in donkey milk has roughly equal parts casein and whey (12).

Given its significantly lower casein content, many people with a cows milk protein allergy can tolerate donkey milk, as they find that donkey milk doesnt cause an allergic response (12).

That can be a plus for anyone whos allergic to cows milk but may benefit from the protein and other nutrients that dairy milk provides.

An Italian study in 81 children with an allergy to cows milk found that all were able to drink donkey milk with no negative reaction. Swapping donkey milk allowed for regular weight and height gains (13).

Still, if you have a known allergy, check with your healthcare provider before trying donkey milk. While donkey milk contains less casein than cows milk, even a trace amount of casein can cause anaphylaxis in some people.

Another important component of donkey milk is lactose. It helps your body absorb calcium, which is important for strong bones (12, 14).

Other compounds in the milk may support a healthier immune system. A lab study showed that donkey milk has the ability to promote the release of cytokines, which are proteins that stimulate the immune system (14).

That same study found that donkey milk also causes cells to produce nitric oxide, a compound that helps dilate blood vessels. Nitric oxide can improve blood flow to your blood vessels, which in turn reduces your blood pressure (14).

Donkey milk may be a suitable dairy substitute for people with a cows milk protein allergy, although it still contains casein and lactose. In addition, it might offer other benefits, including supporting a healthier immune system and reducing blood pressure.

The biggest downside of donkey milk is its price and availability. Because both the number and size of donkey dairy farms are limited, its expensive to produce and sell and thus hard to come by.

Europe has some larger manufacturers who sell the milk in powdered form, but it can be expensive to ship overseas.

The price of donkey milk, along with its low casein content, also make it very expensive and difficult to use for cheesemaking.

Another potential downside is that most small farms only sell raw donkey milk, and drinking unpasteurized milk carries a risk of foodborne illness.

Although donkey milk has antimicrobial properties, and tests usually find it to be free of harmful pathogens, theres always a risk that raw milk contains bacteria or other harmful toxins (7).

That can be dangerous if fed to infants, older adults, or anyone with a compromised immune system.

If you want to try donkey milk in liquid or powder form, look for one that has been pasteurized. Alternatively, heat the raw milk to at least 161F (72C) for 15 seconds before drinking it to kill any pathogens (15).

Finally, if you have lactose intolerance and experience symptoms like gas, bloating, and diarrhea after drinking milk, donkey milk will likely cause these same symptoms due to its lactose content.

Thus, people with lactose intolerance should avoid or limit donkey milk. Alternatively, you can use a lactase enzyme to break down the lactose before drinking it.

Donkey milk is in limited supply and can be expensive. You should also be aware that if you drink raw donkey milk, theres a risk of foodborne illness, which is especially a concern for infants or anyone with a compromised immune system.

Donkey milk is more than a food item. Its just as well known for its use as an ingredient in cosmetics. In fact, youll probably have much better luck finding donkey milk skin moisturizers and soaps than donkey milk beverages.

The proteins in donkey milk have the ability to attract and hold water, which makes it an excellent moisturizer (4).

Some of the proteins in donkey milk also function as antioxidants. They help protect cells from oxidative damage, including that caused by sun exposure, thus providing anti-aging benefits (4).

Cosmetic products that may have donkey milk as a major ingredient include skin creams, face masks, soaps, and shampoos.

One of the most common uses for donkey milk is as an ingredient in anti-aging cosmetics. It has moisturizing and antioxidant properties to protect your skin, face, and hair.

Donkey milk may sound like a new fad, but it has been used since ancient Greek and Roman times as a health-promoting beverage and skin-moisturizing cosmetic treatment.

Its especially appealing to those with a cows milk protein allergy who can tolerate its low casein content.

However, note that it still contains a fair amount of lactose and may be unsuitable for people with lactose intolerance.

The milk also contains compounds that may strengthen your immune system and inhibit the growth of bacteria, viruses, and other infections.

Donkey milk is expensive and may be hard to find as a beverage, but you can still take advantage of its cosmetic benefits. Its easy to find moisturizing creams, soaps, and shampoos made with donkey milk.

Longevity app calculates your life expectancy but will it make us healthier? – The Conversation UK

Would knowing the date of your death influence your actions? It did for Tiberius Caesar. Convinced by the court astrologer Thrasyllus that he had many years of life ahead of him, the paranoid old emperor chose to postpone the murder of his heir Caligula.

But by believing Thrasylluss prediction and letting his guard down, Tiberius inadvertently gave Caligula enough time to poison him first. The rest, as they say, is history which Thrasyllus had altered by deliberately overestimating his employers life expectancy.

While many of us are unlikely to find ourselves in Caesars position, knowing how many years we have left may influence many aspects of our life including when to retire, whether to take a long-awaited vacation, and even whether to opt for certain medical treatments.

My Longevity, a newly developed app from researchers at the University of East Anglia, now allows each of us to be our own life expectancy astrologer. But how much trust should we place in these predictions?

Simply put, life expectancy is how long, on average, members of any given population can expect to life. This is different from lifespan, which is the maximum length of time any member of the species can survive.

Although lifespan has changed very little if at all global life expectancy has soared by more than 40 years since the beginning of the 20th century. This was achieved through a combination of scientific discoveries and public health measures that drove down infant mortality. In the UK, life expectancy at birth is now over 80 years.

Life expectancy depends a lot on where you grow up or live. So the more a disparate population can be broken down into sub-populations who have traits in common but which are still large enough to be statistically significant the more accurate predictions become. Doing this might involve subdividing the population by sex (on average females live longer than males) or smoking status (for obvious reasons) or both.

The team of researchers used a sophisticated version of this approach when developing their app, informed by its previous research. This allows its app to factor in the life expectancy effects of controlled and uncontrolled high blood pressure, the presence of related illnesses such as cardiovascular disease or rheumatoid arthritis, ongoing treatment with statins, and serious risk factors, such as high cholesterol.

Developing the app has involved dealing with some problems along the way in estimating potential health benefits for the overall population based on those seen in clinical trials. This is because discrepancies exist between trial subjects and populations for a number of reasons but usually they are cases of what is known as tight segmentation working against you.

For example, a clinical trial of the effects of orange juice in sailors with scurvy will show profound benefits because they are a tight segment with vitamin C deficiency. But anyone expecting to see the same beneficial effects on health from prescribing orange juice to everyone taking a boat trip today is going to be deeply disappointed.

How seriously you should treat the predictions from an app of this type is basically a function of how accurately it reflects the sub-population into which you best fit. I compared my life expectancy prediction from My Longevity with calculators provided by the UK Office for National Statistics and those of two insurance companies. The predictions varied from 84-90 years. As Im 54, this may not have been a completely fair test of My Longevity because the data the team has used makes the app most accurate for the over 60s.

The major reason life expectancy calculators spit out such different figures is because there are a wide range of factors influencing the results. Being married increases your life expectancy compared to being single, as does being happy. In addition to smoking, levels of fruit and vegetable intake influence life expectancy. Perhaps unsurprisingly, levels of alcohol consumption and exercise make a profound difference to life expectancy. These are concrete lifestyle changes people can make which can add years to their lives.

The East Anglia research team hopes that access to its calculator will encourage users to adopt healthier lifestyles. Although there is some evidence that framing behaviours in terms of their effects on life expectancy is an effective way of encouraging people to embrace healthier lifestyles, superficial discussions of health and longevity often assume that everyone will seek to maximise life expectancy if only they are fed enough of the facts about it.

However, human motivation is emotional and intuitive at its core and is shaped by what a person most values in life. Propositions that accord with a persons values are typically supported. Those that dont are either ignored or rejected.

Another common mistake made by those promoting behaviour change is to assume their own dominant values are shared by the people they want to adopt the behaviour in question. This approach will only convince people who already think and feel like them. But the more developers of such apps recognise that users will only adopt certain behaviours according to their values and beliefs, the more useful these apps will be.
