Tiger Woods now exists in a realm above golf. Hes become an icon – The Globe and Mail

A few months after the 2009 car crash that began the unravelling of his career for most of the next decade, Tiger Woods returned to golf.

He wasnt much good, but he was different.

At [previous] tournaments, he would look at you and burn a hole right through you, like you didnt even exist, touring pro Jason Gore a man whod known Woods since they were grade-schoolers told Sports Illustrated years later. He started asking about my wife, asking about my kids. It was nice to see him be, you know, normal.

The most famous stop on Woodss unlikely comeback tour happened eight months ago in Augusta, Ga., when he won the Masters. But his transformation from an alien robot sent here to destroy golf courses into a recognizably human person found its fullest expression in Australia over the weekend.

Woods arrived at the Presidents Cup a tournament that mixes the best parts of a golf major, a football pep rally and a WWE tag-team match circa 1984 as the rookie captain of the U.S. team.

Presidents Cup captains are traditionally over-the-hill figureheads much like actual presidents. They are there to add gravitas to the event and, one assumes, say things like, Try to hit the ball toward the hole.

Using his discretionary roster picks, Woods tapped himself for the team. That often ends in tears, but it is what youd expect from a guy who has never lacked for confidence. And he was right. Hed been the best American in the early going.

Then he did something surprising.

In the penultimate round, with the America side trailing the Rest-of-the-World team badly, Woods benched himself.

We gotta do whats best for the team, Woods not-really explained.

Story continues below advertisement

Despite all the public speaking hes done in his life, Woods has never developed the knack for it. He channels all his thoughts through a motivational clich machine.

Once the cameras were on, Woods had never once taken the risk of saying or doing anything that might be held against him. Its one of the reasons that while many people admired or envied him, no one ever loved him.

This was a little different. Woods was opening himself up to a bunch of bad possibilities Tiger the ditherer, Tiger the quitter, Tiger the fraidy-cat.

And then it worked out. The Americans reeled the Internationals in on Saturday and with Woods back on the course finished them off Sunday. If not a fightback for the ages, it was still a notable one.

As he hit his winning stroke against Mexicos Abraham Ancer, Woods had his hat off and was extending his hand before the ball was in the cup. No hooting. No fist pumps. No celebrations.

Afterward, he walked over to a group of American fans for photos. He looked happy?

Story continues below advertisement

This is no longer the guy we once knew.

What was most remarkable was the way in which Woodss team talked about the victory after the fact. They hadnt won with him. Theyd won for him.

It was pretty awesome to play for the greatest player ever, Matt Kuchar said.

We are very inspired to play for Tiger, with Tiger, and its so satisfying to win this Cup because of that, Tony Finau said.

Okay, so golfers arent poets. But the point is that among his peers, at least Woods has finally ascended to something approaching Arnold Palmer status. He isnt just demonstrably great at golf any more. He now exists in a realm above the game. Hes becoming an icon.

The tricky thing about icons is that, in order to be one, you must be liked.

Story continues below advertisement

Athletes who are remote and make no human connections may also be considered great, but they are forgotten after a generation or so.

You dont linger in the imagination because you won X number of tournaments or trophies. Lots of people win things. Your longevity is born of stories the time you did this or said that or touched someones life in a small, but telling way. The simpler these stories are, the more they stick in the public mind.

When you think of Palmer these days, it has very little to do with his titles. A vast majority of people have never seen those wins. They may not even have seen him hit a stroke in his prime.

Palmer remains a titan because people tell stories about how lovely he was to be around. He apparently had that special skill of really seeing people, rather than looking through them.

He wasnt likeable because he was great. He was likeable in spite of it.

You cant tell that story yourself. You cant pay a PR firm or the marketing guys at Nike to manufacture it for you. Others have to volunteer for the duty.

Story continues below advertisement

Woods will be 44 in a few days long past the age most athletes get to play. And people have finally started to tell those stories.

One gets the feeling that the key to that wasnt his play. It was his lack thereof. In taking his own name off the list, Woods did something he hasnt often been accused of showing humility. That it worked out only added to the meaningfulness of the gesture.

All the talk now is of what Woods will look like in 2020. Hes still old and creaky. He didnt manage much this year after the Masters. But hes just had a nice, little run of form.

Will he return next year as resurgent as he looked back in April? He needs three more majors to tie Jack Nicklaus for the most in history. Is that possible?

Im not sure it matters as much any more.

Palmer only won seven majors. Name a golfer who matters more.

Story continues below advertisement

If Woodss goal now is immortality, his new target may be bagging fewer wins and being more normal.

3 Simple Hacks To Help You Lose Weight, Get Fit And Maintain A Healthy Lifestyle – YourTango

Preparation is everything.

Is your freezer filled with meals from that expensive diet you abandoned a year ago?

Or maybe you saw the perfect piece of exercise equipment in an infomercial and spent a small fortune on it, only to see it now languish in your guest room.

Or perhaps valuable storage on your phone is still being taken by the fitness tracker that only serves to tell you data you no longer want to know about your sleep, diet and exercise habits.

Those items are wonderful if you use them as part of a comprehensive plan to get and stay healthy in mind, body, and spirit, but living a healthy lifestyle involves more than buying into the latest gimmicky product or fad.

RELATED:Doing These 10 Things Before 10 A.M. Can Seriously Improve Your Health

If you want to know how to be healthy, it's important to recognize that no specific diet or piece of equipment will be what gets you to your fitness goals, but rather your determination and intention to be in it for the long-haul.

Whether your fitness goals is to lose weight, get in shape or simply be healthy, here are three important tips to keep top of mind.

Consider the claims made by those touting the recent crystal water bottle trend, notably popularized on Gwyneth Paltrow's infamous website, GOOP.

These reusable glass water bottles contain a giant crystal said to infuse the water with special healing powers of some kind, with one retailer stating that each crystal possess its own unique frequency known to help with certain ailments and enhance desired qualities in ones life.

If only a rock could do that, right?

Is a jade egg going to balance your hormones? Even if if could, have you seen a doctor to determine whether they even need balancing?

Mari Kondo is awesome, but the tuning fork with rose quartz she allegedly uses in her everyday life and which will cost you a mere $75 is unlikely to restore a sense of balance, in this writer/psychologists humble opinion.

Does a daily celery juice detox make sense?

As stated by the Cleveland Clinic, Our bodies all actually have their own built-in detox machine the liver. If you treat it right with healthy food, physical activity and a healthy body weight, it can do the heavy lifting in eliminating toxins from your body. Drinking juice wont magically fix it or enhance it.

Much like the diet pills involved in the fen-phen scandal back in the 1990s, any magical quick fix, be it vegetable, mineral or other, should fail to pass the common sense test.

Any diet that has no protein, only protein, no carbs, no fats, only carrots or anything else that is extreme and immoderate is highly questionable.

Check with a physician or nutritionist before embarking on an all-or-nothing plan, or ask yourself if it passes moderation muster.

RELATED:What It Really Means When People Talk About 'Living A Healthy Life'

Is your goal to lose weight or eat healthy? Do you want to build muscle mass or be more fit? Are you trying to improve your concentration or check off the sleep box?

Considering what you really want to achieve helps you keep those important and motivating goals in mind. It also helps you choose a plan that is likely to get you to those goals.

Do not let someone else define your goal. If you dont want to quit smoking, youre not going to be able to do it for someone else. When you decide you want to quit, you can put your heart into it.

When deciding on a program, ask yourself if the time, money and effort are going to be worth it to you.

Fads are appealing because the quick fix is so tempting, but when it comes to meeting health and wellness goals, you cant just phone it in.

Prepared meals cost money, but food prep takes time. Gyms cost money, but relying on YouTube workouts may not give you the motivation or structure you need.

Think it through and try a plan you think you can stick with long-term.

If you hate running, dont start a running program. Its as simple as that.

There are plenty of ways to exercise, eat and engage in some type of spiritual practice, the cornerstones of wellness. There are certainly workouts, healthy foods and relaxation or calming practices out there that youll like.

Try something. If it doesnt feel positive, try something else.

Like your last boyfriend, sometimes if you give it time it grows on you. But if it doesnt, move on and find something that feels right.

You decide on a gym that seemed great on your trial days, but after a month, it doesnt feel right.

You plan to work out after work, but after a week you notice youre not sleeping as well or youre too tired to get important things done.

Changing things up and tweaking a plan is a great way to make it your own.

The healthy meals you bought may cost too much to continue forever, but if they worked, find a way to make them yourself on the cheap.

Its not a failure to decide to try something different. Its an opportunity to be creative and come up with something new.

RELATED:10 Wise Habits Of Happy, Healthy Women

Changing entrenched patterns is difficult. You must choose health and wellness every day.

One day it may seem like you can totally do this. The next day, inexplicably, it seems so much harder to skip that caramel latte.

Remind yourself what your goals are, and why theyre important. Text your bestie and wail about how desperately you do not want to go out in the cold and run, and then, not even be able to eat your favorite, totally unhealthy meal.

But keep at it. Its worth it to move toward your goals.

Sticking with your plans for eating, exercise or spirituality daily is fantastic, in theory.

The day someone brings your favorite dessert to the office, maybe give yourself a break. Eating it will probably cause less stress than depriving yourself, as long as it doesn't happen frequently.

If you miss a day of exercise, thats okay. Just don't skip workouts all the time.

Ruthless adherence to new wellness plans can be helpful to get you going at first, but when overplayed that kind of rigidity is more likely to lead to failure than a short detour from the path.

Making healthy changes is often self-sustaining. When you feel better, look better and function better, you will want to do more of whatever got you there.

That said, it doesnt hurt to build in rewards for effort. Putting aside money for something special, or making time to do something youll enjoy, are great ways to self-reinforce.

Using cheat days on meal plans and skipping classes or gym days as a reward can be worrisome, because its a slippery slope. Its more effective to do something positive for yourself when youve achieved two weeks at the gym or on a new meal plan.

Fitness apps that track progress are also reinforcing because you can the results of your effort concretely.

Its normal to slip up on new health and wellness goals. Theres no need for self-criticism, belittling or whatever it is you do when you realize youre not perfect. A lapse doesnt have to be an epic fail.

Evaluate your slip up, decide if you need to make a change, and start again.

Lapses give you good information about your weaknesses. You can come up with ideas about avoiding pitfalls, like not allowing the breadbasket on the table in a restaurant, or making sure you dont avoid the gym because youre avoiding the ex.

Lapses also give you confidence when you see you can regain momentum.

Use your common sense. Its a long and winding road to health and wellness, complete with roadblocks.

Focus on planning your path forward, recovering from setbacks and enjoying the journey.

Plant Compounds Used to Successfully Treat Alzheimer’s in Mice Now Shown to Prevent Other Effects of Aging – Good News Network

There are two drugs that have been developed by Salk Institute researchers to successfully treat Alzheimers in miceand now, they have found that the very same drug compounds can also slow the aging process in the brains of healthy older mice.

In mouse models of Alzheimers disease, the investigational drug candidates known as CMS121 and J147 improve memory and slow the degeneration of brain cells. Now, Salk researchers have shown how these compounds can also slow aging in healthy older mice by blocking the damage to brain cells that normally occurs during aging and restoring the levels of specific molecules to those seen in younger brains.

The research, published last month in the journaleLife, suggests that the drug candidates may be useful for treating a broader array of conditions and points out a new pathway that links normal aging to Alzheimers disease.

This study further validated these two compounds not only as Alzheimers drug candidates but also as potentially more widely useful for their anti-aging effects, says Pamela Maher, a senior staff scientist at Salk and a co-corresponding author of the new paper.

RELATED: For the First Time, Scientists Have Reversed Dementia in Mice With Drug That Reduces Brain Inflammation

Old age is the biggest risk factor for Alzheimers diseaseabove the age of 65, a persons risk of developing the disease doubles about every five years. However, at a molecular level, scientists arent sure what occurs in the brain with aging that contributes to Alzheimers.

The contribution of old age-associated detrimental processes to the disease has been largely neglected in Alzheimers disease drug discovery, says Antonio Currais, a Salk staff scientist and first author of the new paper.

Maher and David Schubert, the head of Salks Cellular Neurobiology Lab, previously developed CMS121 and J147, variants of plant compounds with medicinal properties. Both compounds tested positive for their ability to keep neurons alive when exposed to cellular forms of stress related to aging and Alzheimers disease.

Since then, the researchers have used the drug candidates to treat Alzheimers in animal models of the disease. But experiments revealing exactly how the compounds work suggested that they were targeting molecular pathways also known to be important in longevity and aging.

In the new research, Maher, Currais, and their colleagues turned to a strain of mice that ages unusually fast. A subset of these mice was given CMS121 or J147 beginning at nine months oldthe equivalent of late middle age in humans. After four months, the team tested the memory and behavior of the animals and analyzed genetic and molecular markers in their brains.

Not only did the animals given either of the drug candidates perform better on memory tests than mice that hadnt received any treatment, but their brains showed differences at the cellular and molecular levels. In particular, expression of genes associated with the cells energy-generating structures called mitochondria was preserved by CMS121 and J147 during aging.

LOOK: Revolutionary New Arm Cast is Waterproof, Breathable, and Itch-Free

The bottom line was that these two compounds prevent molecular changes that are associated with aging, says Maher.

More detailed experiments showed that both drugs affected mitochondria by increasing levels of the chemical acetyl-coenzyme A (acetyl-coA). In isolated brain cells, when the researchers blocked an enzyme that normally breaks down acetyl-CoA, or when they added extra amounts of an acetyl-coA precursor, they saw the same beneficial effect on mitochondria and energy generation. The brain cells became protected against the normal molecular changes associated with aging.

There was already some data from human studies that the function of mitochondria is negatively impacted in aging and that its worse in the context of Alzheimers, says Maher. This helps solidify that link.

Maher and Currais are planning future experiments to test the effects of CMS121 and J147 on how other organs age. They also hope to use the new results to inform the development of new Alzheimers drugs; targeting other molecules in the acetyl-coA pathway may help treat the disease, they hypothesize.

We are now using a variety of animal models to investigate how this neuroprotective pathway regulates specific molecular aspects of mitochondrial biology, and their effects on aging and Alzheimers, says Currais.

AI Is Central To The Longevity Financial Industry – Forbes

150 financial institutions advancing the Longevity financial industry

There are over 1 billion people currently in retirement. New types of financial institutions are evolving to satisfy the needs of this aging population. Investment banks, pension funds, and insurance companies are developing new business models, and are using AI to improve the quality of the analytics used to formulate them. In the near future, the synergy between innovative AI and wealth management will lead to the creation of a new financial institutions optimized for the aging population. Age-friendly Longevity banks will make banking services easier and safer for seniors.

Over 150 financial companies are already developing innovative WealthTech and AgeTech products and services and AI is central to the process. AI drives Longevity, Longevity enables AgeTech, AgeTech enables WealthTech, WealthTech supports interest in Longevity as an industry. This makes the ongoing growth of AgeTech and WealthTech inevitable. Many innovative financial institutions are in development such as Longevity-focused venture funds, Longevity-AgeTech banks, Longevity index funds and hedge funds, and even a specialized stock exchange for Longevity-focused companies and financial products.

AgeTech

AgeTech refers to the technologies and services optimized for people over 60. AgeTech services enable older people to conduct banking with less difficulty and also helps protect them from financial fraud. AgeTech products for seniors include tablets, smartphones, computers, banking interfaces, medical alert systems, and phone amplifiers. AgeTech is not limited to the financial industry. For instance, theres a growing demand for smart homes for older people. Age friendly smart homes provide AI products and services that make it possible for people to stay in their own homes even if they require special care. The AgeTech segments potential is forecasted to reach $2.7 trillion by 2025, showing 21% annual market growth.

WealthTech

WealthTech companies produce products and services that simplify and enhance the creation and maintenance of wealth. WealthTech companies, which offer advice based on AI and big data, are adapting existing products and services to enhance the financial situation of people over 60. These companies are implementing innovations to address the financial challenges that many seniors face. The following are four examples of WealthTech.

Top 150 pension funds, banks, insurance companies, reinsurance companies, and asset management firms ... [+] advancing Longevity, AgeTech, WealthTech

Longevity Stock Exchange

There are hundreds of Longevity startups in the UK, EU, US and Asia and 99% of them are not publicly traded. This means that they are limited to seeking funding from angel investors and venture investors, which represents a very small fraction of available global wealth. This situation creates an extreme funding deficit and a major illiquidity problem. This situation is facing almost all DeepTech sectors, but the negative repercussions are particularly bad for the Longevity industry, as it leads to reduced quality of life and unnecessary suffering for many older people. It also threatens to inflict crippling economic effects on national healthcare systems, pensions, social security systems, and national economies. Furthermore, in many cases investors exploit the gross illiquidity for their own financial advantage, to the detriment of Longevity and DeepTech startups.

In the future a Longevity Stock Exchange will be developed to deal with specialized derivatives. This will be a means by which investors can provide increased liquidity to the Longevity industry, and will lead to a self-sustaining cycle of growth in the Financial Longevity Industry whereby the effect of aging on GDP is repeatedly offset and the wealth created is reinvested into technologically reinvigorated human capital. The increased liquidity will enable greater flexibility and greater leverage for the further growth of the companies listed on the exchange, and will help advance the Longevity industry as a whole. Setting up a Longevity Stock Exchange will require the public listing of at least 100 Longevity-focused companies to create good enough diversity and potential volume for trading.

Novel Financial Institutions for the Longevity Economy

AgeTech Longevity Banks

The growth of the aging population will be accompanied by a proliferation of other products including new types of savings accounts, specialized retirement plans, and specialized financial advising. As a consequence, new types of financial products, new asset classes, new investment strategies, and longer-dated bonds and securities will be developed. Traditional banks, as opposed to challenger banks, are making their first steps in AgeTech and adapting their infrastructure for people over 60. For example, HSBC has partnered with the Alzheimers Society to create dementia-friendly products, and Barclays is actively developing software for seniors to make their customer experience more comfortable.

Over the next few years, it is likely that WealthTech and AgeTech will come to be regarded as complementary functions and AgeTech Longevity Banks reconfigured specially for seniors will emerge. Rising life expectancy is creating new opportunities for the financial sector and as the proportion of people in retirement continues to grow, an increasing number of products and services will be offered. New financial institutions optimized for people 60+ will help transform the growing aging population from a global threat into a global opportunity and will spawn a whole new industry the capitalization of which could exceed anything ever conceived of by financial markets.

Making the healthy choice the easy choice – Daily Ardmoreite

Drew Butler

FridayDec13,2019at11:01AM

The Ardmore Institute of Health presented two local organizations with special Partner of the Year awards for their efforts to promote healthy lifestyles. This was the first year the award was presented with Ardmore Family YMCA and Ardmore Parks and Recreation receiving the honors.

AIH Program Director Michelle Sinkler said it was difficult to pick only one partner of the year because both have been such strong allies in achieving the mission of improving the health and vitality of the public in order to live more meaningful lives.

In order for citizens to make daily healthy lifestyle choices, the opportunity must be made available and encouraged, Sinkler said. Ardmore Institute of Health has sought you out community change agents and community champions and you have partnered with AIH this year and in years past to provide the opportunity for Carter County Citizens to lead physically active lives.

Sinkler said the Ardmore Family YMCA has partnered with AIH in a variety of ways over the years, however their help in bringing pickleball to the community is one partnership that stands out in particular. Not only did they open their facility to host the pickleball tournament during the first annual Ardmore Senior Games, the YMCA remained open to those wanting to learn the game for months afterwards.

If you wanted to learn pickleball and participate in pickleball you could come to the Y and play for free for six months, Sinkler said. They have encouraged that game to grow, and now its grown so much that I dont even know how many people are playing on a weekly basis.

The second partner of the year award went to Ardmore Parks and Recreation, and once again Sinkler said they have worked together on many programs. However their efforts in bringing the aforementioned Senior Games to town, put the parks department over the edge.

When Ardmore Institute of Health wanted to bring the Senior Games games for people who are 50 years of age and older to Ardmore, we found out the Ardmore Parks and Recreation was also interested in the same thing, Sinkler said. For two years now they have been our partner with the Ardmore Senior Games. The first year we had 74 participants and this year we increased that number to around 100. Next year theyll be taking over the project full-time.

Avoid obesity, maintain healthy lifestyle to lower risk of knee replacement – Business Standard

Obesity is a well-recognised global epidemic. In the last 30 years, worldwide obesity has doubled. The prevalence of obesity in India is 12 to 31 per cent in various age groups. About 22 to 39 per cent Indian population suffer from osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee. The most significant impact of overweight on bone and joints is associated with degenerative OA of the knee. The treatment of end stage osteoarthritis of knee is surgical total knee replacement (TKR). Good lifestyle incorporating a balanced diet, physical fitness and exercises lowers the risk of obesity and thus the risk of OA of the knee.

In India the risk of OA and need for total knee replacement surgery increases after the age of 50. The increasing life expectancy and increasing prevalence of obesity in our country pose a new health hazard of obese patients requiring knee replacement. Obesity during early adulthood predisposes to OA. Obesity is a leading driver of knee replacement demand and imposes increased risks of surgical complications. Obesity is the greatest modifiable risk factor for OA knee. A body mass index (BMI) of more than 30kg/m2 is 7 times more likely to develop osteoarthritis knee. The relationship of body mass index to osteoarthritis is significantly higher in women than men.

Overweight causes degeneration of joints, especially knee by not only increasing the mechanical loading of the joint but also hormonal dysregulation in the body. OA causes limitation of all aspects of the life through pain and limitation of mobility. It is estimated that the economic burden of osteoarthritis was only second to diabetes in USA, and we are not far away from this situation.

Weight reduction or maintaining healthy lifestyles such as regular exercises, walking, jogging, and sporting activities not only can keep the knee and other joints healthy but can keep the articular cartilage nourished and prevent early degeneration of the joints. Balanced diet can help in maintaining a good metabolism in the body in patients with obesity, diabetes, and cardiac illness which often coexist.

It has been proved in multiple studies that the weight reduction helps in relieving pain and improving function in patients suffering from crippling knee degenerative arthritis. The high impact exercises such as running, jogging, and treadmill are not advisable in patients, once the degeneration in the joints is already set in. The exercises for patients with knee arthritis include muscle strengthening across the knee including the quadriceps strengthening and hamstring strengthening exercises. Joint mobilisation exercises to prevent stiffness and a possible development of deformity, help in relieving the arthritic pain to a great extent.

Once the knee arthritis becomes severe, the various exercises to reduce weight and maintain active lifestyle become a challenge. Hence a good awareness of modifiable risk factors for obesity and arthritis of the knee can help us to lead a happy healthy and pain free life. Avoiding obesity by using good lifestyle, balanced diet, and exrercises not only reduces array of medical disorders (diabetes, increased cholesterol, heart disease, osteoporosis, etc) but also significantly reduces the risk of OA knee, and thus, the need for knee replacement surgery.

Diets of fathers can affect future health of offspring, study finds – The Irish Times

A fathers diet can have a significant effect on the future health of his offspring, affecting everything from blood pressure to heart function and putting them at greater risk of cardiovascular disease, according to research.

The lead author of a British study says the findings show that men who want to start a family should have a healthy, balanced diet from at least three months before conception.

A study from researchers at the University of Nottingham published in the Journal of Physiology shows that poor paternal diet, specifically one that is low in protein, may impact the heart health of the offspring by changing sperm, and the seminal fluid, which bathes sperm.

We have known for a very long time that what a mother eats during pregnancy can influence how her child develops, and whether or not it will develop obesity, type two diabetes and heart disease, explains senior author of the study, and lead researcher, Prof Adam Watkins, assistant professor in reproductive biology at the universitys faculty of medicine and health sciences. However, the importance of the fathers diet on the health of the offspring has been largely ignored or overlooked. We were interested in investigating whether a fathers poor-quality diet at the time of conception might affect the long-term health of its offspring.

Researchers carried out their study on male mice on a poor, low-protein diet, monitoring the cardiovascular health of their offspring. The way mice produce sperm, the way the embryo develops, the way the foetus develops and the way a mouses blood and heart function are all very similar to humans. This means we can use mice to identify important biological processes which we can then look at in human patients.

What his research found, he reports, was both that the way the mices blood vessels worked, and the level of certain important factors in their blood, which regulate heart and blood vessel function, were significantly altered in response to the poor diet of the father: The blood vessels in the offspring did not work as well as they should do. This can ultimately affect blood pressure.

The normal proteins in the blood which would regulate blood vessels and heart function were altered, says Prof Watkins, adding that essentially what this meant was that the young mice were at increased risk of developing cardiovascular ill-health or heart disease.

We know that a poor lifestyle in men does have negative influences on sperm quality and that being overweight or smoking, or consuming excessive alcohol is not good for reproductive health. What we dont know yet is what the long-term implications of a fathers poor diet or lifestyle might be, he says.

We know that the sperm provides genetic information from a father to the egg it fertilises, and we know that poor diet in males can change that. We also know that the seminal fluid in which sperm is carried, interacts with the uterus and initiates a range of responses in the maternal immune system. These responses prime the uterus for the embryo.

We know that the sperm provides genetic information and that the seminal fluid primes the uterus for the embryo, so here are two possible ways that a fathers diet could influence how the offspring might develop.

Essentially, Prof Watkins explains, the Nottingham research shows that the health of mice offspring is influenced by sperm and fluid and that both of them have an equal influence on offspring health.

However, he says, while the research has to date only been carried out on mice, it has significant implications for human fertility in fact the researchers hope to run clinical trials on humans within the next two or three years.

We know that it can take about 75 days to make a sperm, and that seminal fluid is reproduced every 24-48 hours, says Prof Watkins.

If a man goes on a crash diet a week before getting his partner pregnant, he explains, the sperm will continue to reflect the old, poor quality diet, while the seminal fluid will reflect the newer, better-quality diet.

Therefore there may be a situation where the sperm and the fluid are not compatible to each other, so we are saying that if the sperm and the fluid are different, we see the biggest effect on offspring health.

The potential message is this, he warns: If men and women are thinking about changing their lifestyle and becoming parents, we would say that ideally they begin the changes three months before trying to start a family. That is an ideal time frame to change over from a poor diet and lifestyle to a healthier one in terms of its implications for the mans reproductive health.

The Nottingham research findings have interesting implications for what we know about the role of seminal fluid and sperm DNA fragmentation (a term used for the presence of abnormal genetic material within the sperm, which may lead to male subfertility, in-vitro fertilisation failure and miscarriage) believes Dr Bart Kuczera, consultant gynaecologist and fertility expert at Beacon Care Fertility:

What we know is that men with a poor lifestyle in terms of diet, smoking and drinking can have a condition called sperm DNA fragmentation.

Men are advised to live a healthy lifestyle in order to keep their sperm in the best condition, because, he explains: Sperm DNA fragmentation can be affected by poor diet, stress and overeating, for example. This study would make the case for a good diet and lifestyle for men; that is, a normal balanced protein diet.

Sperm quality of men in the western world, he warned, has been shown to have deteriorated in the last 40 years: We believe this is very linked to lifestyle and the environment, to the sedentary lifestyle and a poor diet which reaches the recommended carbohydrate level but would not include a diversity of food.

In the greater picture you could potentially have a population of children who would be affected in terms of physical health problems and weight gain as a result of the paternal diet at conception. It is important to spread the responsibility between the man and the woman at the time of conception, he says, adding that this study suggests that the father may have an equally significant impact on his offsprings health problems.

This study has implications for our knowledge about diet and lifestyle in terms of fertility and men should be made aware of it, believes Dr Hans Arce, fertility consultant and medical director of ReproMed, a leading Irish fertility and IVF clinic network. The majority of our knowledge in relation to diet and lifestyle in terms of fertility comes because we studied women. Women were the ones who got pregnant and they were the focus. We saw, for example, that women with obesity had children with a higher risk of obesity and diabetes.

However this study showed the offspring of male mice with poor diets ended up having the expression of inflammation, and more of a tendency to high blood pressure, for example.

Men should be made aware of this. Its something the schools, the public health service and the GP should be telling men about that our diets can affect their future childrens health. Studies like these have implication for human beings, he says, adding that the results point in the direction of the fact that the health of a man may have implications for the health of his offspring.

What this study says, he observes, is that a mans diet will not just affect his own health, but potentially has implications for the health of his offspring: We dont have proper human studies yet this is mice but it is pointing in that direction!

Lifestyle is the single biggest issue when it comes to fertility, believes consultant nutritionist Gaye Godkin.

Godkin believes the University of Nottingham study is a further endorsement of what she says, is the role of epigenetics in health outcomes from pre-conception health across the life course.

There is a growing body of evidence showing just how much the fathers diet impacts on the pre-conception phase, in terms of its
impact on sperm and seminal fluid and from there on to the long-term health of his offspring.

Epigenetics, she explains, is the environment in which the sperm lives prior to penetrating the egg. Sperm is produced around every 75 days or so but new seminal fluid is produced every 24 to 48 hours.

If the man has a long-term poor diet, it will affect his sperm, she says, adding however, that a man can have healthy sperm, while at the same time his seminal fluid could be of much lower quality because of a poor diet just before conception.

Normal sperm carries DNA. A poor diet has a negative effect on the DNA and the DNA enzymes which in turn are crucial to the formation of a healthy foetus.

In fertility clinics, they measure the level of a condition called DNA fragmentation in the male sperm. This test shows the quality of the sperm. For years I have worked with men who have high levels of DNA fragmentation in their sperm. I believe that it is strongly linked to diet, as well as to lifestyle factors such as smoking, alcohol consumption, excess weight and the effect of pesticides.

While the Nottingham study was based on a mouse model, she says, its findings were moving in the right direction in terms of our understanding of the volatility of sperm quality and what affects it, as well as its relationship with the internal environment of the male body.

While there is no medical treatment available for DNA fragmentation, says Godkin, she has found that 90 days on a good-quality diet which also features a reversal of poor lifestyle factors can lead to fragmentation levels being significantly reduced to the extent that a couple are in a position to use their own sperm to achieve conception.

How to live longer: The diet proven to help you stave off cancer and boost life expectancy – Express

The age-old secret to a longer life really comes down to a healthy lifestyle including regular exercise, limiting alcohol intake, not smoking and eating a healthy balanced diet. Good nutrition is key to leading a healthy lifestyle. The foods a person eats gives the body information and materials they need to function properly. If a person eats too much food, or food that gives the body the wrong instructions, their risk of potentially life-threatening diseases increases and lifespan shortens. What is the best diet to help a person live a long, healthy life and reduce their risk of deadly diseases?

A study has been published in the JAMA Internal Medicine Journal and reignites debate around increasingly popular vegan diets amid conflicting medical advice and evidence over the impact of ones health.

The study found every three percent in calories form plant protein was found to reduce risk of death by 10 percent.

The figure rises to 12 percent for risk of dying from heart disease. By contrast, raising the share of animal protein in ones diet by 10 percent led to a two percent higher risk of death from all causes.

Experts recommend eating more plant-based foods, such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Lean protein and low-fat dairy products are also recommended.

Numerous research suggests eating at least seven portions of fresh fruits and vegetables per day may lower the risk of dying from cancer by up to 15 percent.

Dr Mingyang Song said: Overall, studies have supported the importance of the sources of dietary protein for long-term health outcomes.

This North Girl Combined a South Twist and Millets to Found a Healthy Startup! – The Better India

All my friends started calling me Millet Amma and after a point they told me that they wouldnt be accepting the batter for free. That is how the startup was birthed, says founder Ruchika

As someone who does not like the toast-cereal-milk routine, I was thrilled when I moved to Bengaluru because I could finally eat yummy dosas every day! This versatile Indian pancake is widely available, super healthy, filling, and is a wonderful option for not just breakfast, but also lunch and dinner.

But what if it could be made healthier?

Millet Amma, a startup by Ruchika Bhuwalka in 2018, is striving to do exactly that by selling millet-based dosa and idli batters, that can be used to make dosas that are not just supremely nutritious but also delicious.

While she began by primarily catering to friends and family, she now has 4000 customers!

I truly believe that watching what you eat is something that would help us lead a healthy life. Therefore, all the products that we sell are hand made from organic grains sourced from 300 farmers spread across Karnataka and do not contain any chemicals or preservatives, she explains.

Ruchika was born and brought up in Kolkata, while her ancestral home is in Rajasthan. I grew up among foodies. We literally ate everything in sight without keeping a calorie count, laughs the 42-year-old.

However, once she shifted to Bangalore in 2003, she realised the importance of a healthy diet.

My husband suffered from excruciating backaches. We visited several doctors and learnt that while our sedentary lifestyle is to blame, diet also plays an important role. Eating a large amount of inflammatory food can cause muscles to contract without relaxing, and since the spine is what supports the body, an unhealthy diet can put a lot of strain on the back, she explains.

The duo changed their eating habits after the doctors visit and did away with food high in sugar.

But, I knew that a diet of just fruits and vegetables would not provide the nutrition that the body needs. Which is why I started experimenting with organic, unpolished indigenous healthy grains, recalls Ruchika. Thus began Ruchikas research and she stumbled upon millets, specifically barnyard millet which isvery similar to broken rice when cooked.

I substituted the rice in the dosa batter with the barnyard millet, and the results were fabulous! My husband couldnt even tell that it was made of millet, exclaims Ruchika.

Ruchikas barnyard millet-based dosa batter grew increasingly popular among friends and family members. So much that she even started requesting her to make this batter for them.

All my friends started calling me Millet Amma and after a point, announced that they wouldnt be accepting the batter for free. That is how the startup was birthed, smiles Ruchika.

Ruchika started by making the barnyard millet dosa and idli batter, and today, she has diversified to batters made from grains like ragi, foxtail millet, red rice and brown rice. Jowar-based batters are made on demand.

Apart from all the batters, she also make pickles, chutneys, podis, and dips. Our Moringa (drumstick leaves) chutney is one of the most popular products. Not only is it rich in Vitamins A and C, but it is also a good source of iron, potassium and calcium. You can eat this chutney with you meals, dosas, idlis, chapatis and even as a sandwich spread, explains Ruchika.

Other interesting items include a curd dip with chilli garlic and dill, energy bars made using jaggery, dry fruits, nuts and seeds.

All of Millet Ammas products have the FSSAI certifications in place, and they are also hyper focussed on sustainability.

Customers who return empty dosa batter containers receive a 10 per cent discount on their next order, and we recycle the packaging. Also, the paper bags we use are bought from an NGO and are made by differently-abled children, says Ruchika.

Shikha Khanna is a baby photographer based in Bengalurus Whitefield area. The 38-year-old and her family follow a diet which is devoid of processed food and focus on whole grains, legumes, seeds, nuts, vegetables are essential components in her familys diet.

Shikha also moderates a health initiative called Health Diaries.

Here, we organise workshops and speak to people about healthy life choices. It is the easiest thing to do, and is, essential to keep diseases at bay, says Shikha.

Shikha would often visit exhibitions on organic products, and this is where she bumped into Ruchika.

I love Millet Ammas range of products because they are organic and healthy. My son is a huge fan of the pizzas I make with their pizza base, and we love the chocolate and millet cookies too, she declares.

Running a startup is full of challenges, even if it is successful, and this is true for Ruchika as well. Despite being able to run her startup successfully, there are a few challenges that Ruchika mentions.

The first is the shelf life of the dosa batter.

It has a shelf life of 14 days and getting it to customers on time was initially a challenge for us. Today, we have our delivery guys who have divided our customers based on areas to finish the deliveries well within time, she says.

In case of deliveries outside Bangalore, they have tied up with delivery partners and immediately ship the orders after personally speaking to the customer.

The other challenge that she faced was that the price of her products is continuously compared to other items in the market.

This is something we have encountered often. But our prospective customers need to understand that our products are not only preservative-free but also organic. Most of the grains that are used to make the conventional dosa batters are polished grains. We have ensured that we use organic whole grains that we have sourced ourselves, explains.

However, Ruchika is undaunted by these challenges.

I have not only seen family, friends and customers but also children enjoying our products. That makes me happy, and it is proof of the fact that they are not only healthy but also tasty. In the future, we hope to reach out to more customers with the hope that they too can adopt a healthy lifestyle, she signs off.
