Could the Way You Make Your Coffee Impact Your Health? – Bicycling

When you think about your preride prep, chances are, the coffee is just as important as the gels or energy bars you stash in your pockets. Which is good, because the health benefits of coffee, including a decreased risk of certain cancers, dementia, and stroke, are widely known. And while there is evidence that a cup of joe can also protect against the development of type 2 diabetes, new research out of Sweden found that the way you make your coffee might play a bigger role in the diseases prevention than previously thought.

In the study, published in the Journal of Internal Medicine, researchers looked at data from 421 participants in the Vsterbotten Intervention Program (1991 to 2005) who, after about seven years, developed type 2 diabetes and compared them to 421 participants who stayed healthy.

They looked at specific biomarkers in the participants blood samples (that were frozen from the Vsterbotten Intervention Program) and found that those who drank two to three cups of filtered coffee a day were 60 percent less likely to develop type 2 diabetes than those who drank only one cup of filtered coffee a day. However, drinking unfiltered coffeeboiled, K-cups, or French press, for examplehad no effect on type 2 diabetes risk.

So whats the deal? While researchers dont know for sure, the compounds in coffee that are known to elevate your blood lipid and homocysteine (an amino acid) levelswhich could lead to type 2 diabetesget captured in the filter paper and dont actually make it into the coffee you end up drinking, according to Rikard Landberg, Ph.D., study coauthor and head of the Division of Food and Nutrition Science at Chalmers University of Technology.

While this may seem alarming, Landbergs takeaway is still a positive one: Coffee isnt detrimental to your overall health. Intake of two to three cups per day could make a significant contribution to a healthy lifestyle for prevention of type 2 diabetes, he told Bicycling.

While this specific study found that filtered coffee may be best for prevention, coffee, in general, contains chromium, which helps your body utilize insulin (a hormone that regulates your blood sugar).

So if you have a family history of diabetes or simply want to reduce your chances of developing it later in life, go ahead and sip a cup for a jolt of caffeine in the morning as well as an afternoon pick-me-up. Itll do more than just wake you up.

I try not to demonize any food groups, says Flaherty. I just eat more fruits, vegetables and whole grains rather than foods that are processed.

Charlyn Fargo Ware: Getting Control of the Holiday Rush – Noozhawk

Can the holidays get any busier? Just when you make it through gift-wrapping and the Christmas cookies, theres the New Year and the inevitable resolutions. When we finally slow down, we realize we need to take a minute and just breathe. (Its interesting our watches have to actually remind us to do that, right?)

So this year, Im challenging you to start small rather than make resolutions that wont last. Work on one change a week.

For example, start with two workouts a week, or start with eating five fruits and vegetables in a day. Or maybe just start with eating a salad instead of a burger to boost your intake of leafy greens. And when that finally becomes a habit, you can add another small change.

Just dont try to change everything all at once. Thats what backfires, and we tend to give up when we fail.

I love the idea of just slowing down in the New Year so we can think about whats going well and what we need to work on to be better.

And the meaning of "be better" is different for all of us. It could be about being more giving or more loving or more patient. Those are all part of healthy living that we dont often talk about.

I want to be better at a few things and not take so many other things on. So maybe, like me, you need to be better at saying no (and not just to a big helping of ice cream at night).

Maybe you need to work on saying yes to foods that give your body energy and good fuel, and saying no to the others. And that may mean having just a half-cup of ice cream if thats what you're craving.

I think we need to make peace with food and our bodies and realize what we eat makes a huge difference in our outlook and longevity. Most of us know that. But its also OK to indulge sometimes just as long as we enjoy it and then get right back on the healthy lifestyle journey.

Q: Are mushrooms healthy?

A: Mushrooms are a great way to add B vitamins (helpful in providing energy by breaking down proteins, fats and carbohydrates). Mushrooms are also fat-free, low-calorie, nutrient-dense and low in sodium. And mushrooms are the only source of vitamin D in the produce aisle.

They are also a good source of selenium, a mineral that helps the immune system function properly.

Add them to soup, meatloaf, salads and stir-fries.

Like many of you, we have multiple Christmas celebrations to accommodate family schedules. I fixed this Christmas Waldorf Salad at a recent family gathering, and we all loved it. Dried cranberries take the place of raisins, and Greek yogurt and mayonnaise make the salad creamy yet light. Its from Eating Well.

Inequality is still a killer in Dumfries and Galloway according to new government data – Daily Record

Deprivation levels have been blamed for the revelation that baby boys born in the region will die younger than almost anywhere else in Scotland.

Male children born between 2016 and 2018 in the NHS Dumfries and Galloway Health Board area can expect to live until the age of 76 on average, according to new government data.

The National Records of Scotland figures also break lifespan down to expected years of good health.

Men in the region will enjoy good health for an average 64.2 of their estimated 76 years.

Only NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde has a lower life expectancy for males at birth in the years covered by the figures with men expected to live an average 75.3 years.

South of Scotland MSP Colin Smyth said: These figures are a sad indictment of the growing levels of inequality we are seeing across Scotland.

There is a clear link between deprivation and low life expectancy and as poverty increases here in Dumfries and Galloway, life expectancy will fall particularly within our most deprived communities.

For generations parents expected their children to live to an older age than them. That is no longer the case.

Unless we end the shame of poverty then life expectancy will fall in the future and we will be betraying the future of our children.

Females in the local health board area born at the same time live an average 81.8 years, with 64.3 in good health.

Shetland leads the life expectancy table for women, with an 83.4 year average.

Growth in life expectancy rates has generally stalled in Scotland.

Doctors leaders say deprivation is known to have a direct impact on life expectancy.

Professor Derek Bell OBE, president of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, said: Two of the biggest health issues that Scotland faces are obesity and diabetes. It is estimated that around two out of three adults in Scotland are clinically obese.

Price promotions on foods that are high fat, sugar and salt are more likely to be attractive to people with less to spend on their weekly grocery shop.

The college therefore support controls on price promotions of high fat, sugar and salt foods and we back the promotion of healthier food.

We also support the reduction of food portion and pack sizes, as well as retaining and strengthening the sugary drinks tax.

But a healthy lifestyle is important too and we must ensure that we are a healthy and active nation through improved diet and exercise.

The average Scottish life expectancy for those born between 2016 and 2018 was 77 for men and 81.1 years for women.

Life expectancy for both males and females is lower in Scotland than other UK countries.

A spokesman for NHS Dumfries and Galloway, said: The recent figures for life expectancy show a national trend. A regular increase in life expectancy over several decades has slowed down or stopped in recent years.

The reasons for the slowdown are complex and are likely due to a number of societal factors.

Dumfries and Galloway has seen this slowdown in life expectancy improvements, both for men and women, and this is very much in line with the Scottish experience.

Overall, Dumfries and Galloway comes in the middle of the Scottish NHS health boards for life expectancy both for women and men.

Northamptonshire to get first social prescribing service in England – Northampton Chronicle and Echo

Northamptonshire is to be the first area in England to introduce a social prescribing service, an integrated cross-sector service across the county.

Social prescribing helps people to access non-medical services to help manage their own physical, mental health and wellbeing and make sustainable lifestyle changes.

Cllr Ian Morris, Northamptonshire County Council (NCC) cabinet member for adult social care and public health, said: "Evidence shows that social prescribing can lead to a range of positive health and wellbeing outcomes for people, such as improved quality of life and emotional wellbeing."

Through social prescribing, people work with a specialist 'link worker' who can refer them to relevant non-medical services in their community, like leisure activities, social groups and healthy lifestyle advice.

The integrated programme was approved by Northamptonshire Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) and NCC's cabinet on Tuesday, December 17.

The programme was proposed by Northamptonshire Health and Care Partnership (NHCP) and its approval paves the way for a 3.57m outcomes grant from the government's Life Chances Fund.

NHCP has also worked with the social enterprise Bridges Outcomes Partnerships on the programme and has helped the programme secure funding for the next five years, with a potential total investment of 14m.

Toby Sanders, joint chief executive of the Northamptonshire CCGs, said: "This is a momentous decision for Northamptonshire.

"We know that the healthcare we receive is just one of a number of factors that influence our overall health and wellbeing and poor health is actually much more likely to be the result of things like the lifestyles we lead, the environments we live in and the stresses of daily life.

"Many of the issues that lead to ill health cant be fixed by medicines, so its hugely important that we have the right support in place to give people more control over their own health and wellbeing and manage their needs in ways that work for them and are available in their own communities."

Social prescribing is one of the national priorities in the NHS' long term plan and Northamptonshire will be the first area to implement it county-wide.

Some social link prescribers are already working with GP practices and more will be recruited.

NHCP will work closely with Northamptonshires voluntary and community sector to local services can meet the needs of people who need to access them.

The new service will focus on those who can benefit the most from social prescribing, like those with mental health issues, those living with multiple long-term health conditions, carers and people in social isolation.

Cllr Ian Morris added: "Were delighted we now have the go-ahead to begin implementing Northamptonshires new social prescribing service in the New Year, and people can expect to start to see the first evidence of its county-wide availability by the summer of 2020."

Well, my immediate familyembraced [vegetarianism] fully. My mom actually learned recipes for vegan tamales, vegan champurrado, just anything that was a traditional staple she learned to make a vegetarian version for us, because it was two out of three kids that were vegetarians and the third one didnt mind eating vegetarian food.

As far as my extended family, theres a few scattered vegetarians, so there was always a vegetarian dish but usually, it was just sides or something carby like rolls. You kind of have to lean heavy on the appetizers, as opposed to the main meals. The game plan was usually to order ahead from a place we knew had vegetarian food, and it was almost like we were having a second dinner. It was almost like an exclusive club [where] the vegetarians hung out in a certain table, where we would bring our own dishes in solidarity like the kids table for vegetarians. -Pablo Hernadez

We made empanadas for my Friendsgiving and [my mom] helped me make them with veggies only. Shes also learning, which is nice. Shell taste them and shes like, Yeah, theyre good but you know would be better with meat.

Shes more interested in making sure that she makes stuff for me to eat, which is nice because I was starting to just make my own dishes and I think shes trying to [ensure] that I can still eat the traditional food. Even with arepas, I love thoseshe purchased the Daiya soy cheese and made arepas from them, so little by little shes starting to come around, but I mean its taken six years for her to finally give in. I think theres ways, but it is a lot of pressure to just kind of eat whats in front of you because for the sake of tradition, you almost want to do it, you know youre like, Oh, the holidays [are] fine, but I dont like the taste anymore.

So the previous years, I would [make] cookies or I would make something that still involved animal products. I would even offer to cook regular dishes that I was used to cooking, but I wouldnt eat my own stuff I was spending time and money on stuff that I didnt even eat. I would get there, sometimes eat before or I would eat a little bit of whatever side dishes I could eat. I was more so thinking of the full party rather than, Im going to be hungry. Thats why this year, Ive taken side dishessweet potato mash, mac and cheese that didnt have dairyI almost didnt want to take it because I knew people would say something or comment, Oh, this is vegan? For the holidays, I usually make my own food. I kind of find out what my family is eating, like if theyre making tamales or pozole or just different food, so then I can recreate that certain dish and veganize it, just so they can kind of see, Hes eating the same thing were eating without any meat or milk products. Just little by little Ive noticed that my family taste my food. BOTH OF DAVE McEvoys children are vegetarian, something which is particularly surprising given their dad is the man behind Termonfeckin Delicious Turkeys, the bronze standard, as it were, of the turkey world.

Family diversity aside, McEvoy toldFora that he hasnt seen any changes in peoples orders for Christmas food.

Change always happens extremely slowly. For me to notice a change would be quite difficult Im probably at the premium end, so the last people who are going to be changing are my customers, he said.

The tradition of Christmas turkey is hard to break, he added. If it is broken, itll be over a couple of generations.

Over the year, weve seen and heard how plant-based eating trends like vegetarianism and veganism are moving from the fringes of society more towards the mainstream.

Fast food giants such asBurger King, McDonalds and Dominos Pizza are all exploring and trialling plant-based options, while home-grown talent Eddie Rockets has begun rolling out a significantly more vegan-friendly menu.

Delivery apps like Just Eat and Deliveroo have also recordedspikes in orders for vegan food in the past year but note that the humble spice bag isnt going anywhere fast.

Meat consumption globally is on the rise, but the concurrent demand for more plant-based options is still there.

People are thinking more about the climate. Certain people, including my own two children, have become vegetarian but they were vegetarian before it started, McEvoy said. I can see culturally that young people are moving away from meat.

Huge lack of knowledge

Having been in the food business since 1990, McEvoy said there have been significant changes but theyve been slow.

Whats more, from an environmental perspective those changes have tended towards the inefficient.

In the 1980s and early 1990s, people would eat a whole chicken. Today people only eat the chicken fillet, so youre talking about a third of the chicken going to waste or the chicken legs are exported out of Ireland to countries that will eat them.

Thats pretty much the same across all meats, he added, which means a lot of the animal has to be exported.

Consumers arent always logical in what they do. Theres a huge lack of knowledge in consumers in terms of how meat and food production happens. Their consumption is often lead by whims of supermarkets and people who have bright ideas.

Unsurprisingly, McEvoy has also seen a bump in demand for turkey crowns the turkey without the limbs and has adapted accordingly.

In one way Im a very unusual business in that I deal directly with customers. I would only sell about 10% of my turkeys as crowns but in a lot of butcher shops you would find maybe beyond 60% crowns.

Dublins Sova Vegan Butcher has been supplying its loyal clientele with a made-to-order stuffed turkey roulade in recent years, while old-school Cornucopia offers a nut-loaf and the Happy Pear has a vegan wellington.

Newcomer Sam Pearson of the Vegan Sandwich Co. has also thrown his hat in the ring this year after the popularity of his vegan chick*n fillet roll, sold at the Honest to Goodness farmers market he came out with a vegan turkey roast to-order.

The roast, like Sovas, is seitan-based a product made from the protein in wheat which has an easily mouldable texture.

Origami's new role in the field of science and technology has definitely taken a turn for the better in the recent decade. Better known as origami engineering, the practice is used to reduce structures or maximize space and function.

Origami engineering has made great strides in the medical field in particular. The same principles used in origami, when applied to medical devices, allows implants to be folded to minuscule sizes and then unfolded to its actual size. The reverse is also applicable, where like toothpaste tubes, can be fully de-compressed.

Folding techniques could transform flat objects with wrinkles to increase resilience, shock-absorbance, strength, or rigidity. Origami provides a unique insight into how single pieces could sustainably be packaged without cutting, welding, or riveting, allowing for cheaper manufacturing costs and easier assembly.

The utility of origami engineering has captured the attention of people such as Rebecca Taylor, assistant professor at Carnegie Mellon University's Department of Mechanical Engineering. Taylor specializes in microfabrication and biomechanics, a study that has helped her fabricate microscale sensors to reliably assess cardiomyocytes derived from stem cells. A natural inclination to similar practice, Dr. Taylor has developed an origami-based DNA synthetic cardiac contractile protein, which allowed her to observe merging mechanics in multiprotein, acto-myosinc contractile systems.

As a professor, Taylor expands on the utilization of DNA origami in medicine. This technique (also referred to by Dr. Taylor as "bottom-up manufacturing"), allows improvement in nanomanufacturing and nanomechanics of multiprotein systems, paving the way for heart stents that could unfold in a very precise location.

The problem, however, is on how to deploy these structures in a 100% fault-free way. To illustrate this, a common problem that impedes the creation of pop-up tents that could self-assemble at the press of the button is when the folds of the tent get stuck during the folding process on occasion.

Understandably, this raises some concern among those who are keen to use self-folding nanomachines in medicine.

So this is where origami comes in.

According to University of Chicago scientists, the limits of self-folding structures could be intrinsic in that so-called "sticking points" seem to be unavoidable.

Previously thought possible to engineer around, the researchers observed the capacity of foldable structures by creating mathematical models. During the experiment, the team had designed structures capable of self-folding, such as paper origami and nanobots, and creating creases in them beforehand. The result was that when more pre-creases were added to the folds, the more branches in the next folding process could form and the more likely the self-folding mechanism is to get stuck.

Origami engineering is a relatively new innovation. Its application is vast and can be of use to not only technology but to medicine as well. The development of the field itself, then, needs to pick up at a faster pace in order to cater to the intelligent design of foldable structures and materials. But while there are creases in the field that needs to be smoothed out, the greater promise of origami engineering has brought about several research papers in its wake.

Nanopores can identify the amino acids in proteins, the first step to sequencing – University of Illinois News

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. While DNA sequencing is a useful tool for determining whats going on in a cell or a persons body, it only tells part of the story. Protein sequencing could soon give researchers a wider window into a cells workings. A new study demonstrates that nanopores can be used to identify all 20 amino acids in proteins, a major step toward protein sequencing.

Researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Cergy-Pontoise University in France and the University of Freiburg in Germany published the findings in the journal Nature Biotechnology.

Graduate student Kumar Sarthak and physics professor Aleksei Aksimentiev were part of a research team that demonstrated that nanopores could sequence proteins, giving reserachers and clinicians insight into activity within a cell.

DNA codes for many things that can happen; it tells us what is potentially possible. The actual product that comes out the proteins that do the work in the cell you cant tell from the DNA alone, said Illinois physics professor Aleksei Aksimentiev, a co-leader of the study. Many modifications happen along the way during the process of making protein from DNA. The proteins are spliced, chemically modified, folded, and more.

A DNA molecule is itself a template designed for replication, so making copies for sequencing is relatively easy. For proteins, there is no such natural machinery by which to make copies or to read them. Adding to the difficulty, 20 amino acids make up proteins, as compared with the four bases in DNA, and numerous small modifications can be made to each amino acid during protein production and folding.

Many amino acids are very similar, Aksimentiev said. For example, if you look at leucine and isoleucine, they have the same atoms, the same molecular weight, and the only difference is that the atoms are connected in a slightly different order.

Nanopores, small protein channels embedded in a membrane, are a popular tool for DNA sequencing. Previously, scientists thought that the differences in amino acids were too small to register with nanopore technology. The new study shows otherwise.

The researchers used a membrane channel naturally made by bacteria, called aerolysin, as their nanopore. In both computer modeling and experimental work, they chopped up proteins and used a chemical carrier to drive the amino acids into the nanopore. The carrier molecule also kept the amino acids inside the pore long enough for it to register a measurable difference in the electrical signature of each amino acid even leucine and isoleucine, the near-identical twins.

This work builds confidence and reassures the nanopore community that protein sequencing is indeed possible, said Abdelghani Oukhaled, a professor of biophysics at Cergy-Pontoise whose team carried out much of the experimental work.

The researchers found they could further differentiate modified forms of amino acids by using a more sensitive measurement apparatus or by treating the protein with a chemical to improve differentiation. The measurements are precise enough to potentially identify hundreds of modifications, Aksimentiev said, and even more may be recognized by tweaking the pore.

This is a proof-of-concept study showing that we can identify the different amino acids, he said. The current method for protein characterization is mass spectrometry, but that does not determine the sequence; it compares a sample to whats already in the database. Its ability to characterize new variations or mutations is limited. With nanopores, we finally could look at those modifications which have not yet been studied.

The aerolysin nanopore could be integrated into standard nanopore setups, Aksimentiev said, making it accessible to other scientists. The researchers are now exploring approaches to read the amino acids in sequential order as they are cut from the protein. They also are considering other applications for the system.

One potential application would be to combine this with immunoassays to fish out proteins of interest and then sequence them. Sequencing them will tell us whether theyre modified or not, and that could lead to a clinical diagnostic tool, Aksimentiev said.

This work shows that theres really no limit to how precisely we can characterize biological molecules, he said. Very likely, one day we will be able to tell the molecular makeup of the cell what we are made of, down to the level of individual atoms.

The National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation supported this work. Computer modeling was done on the Blue Waters supercomputer at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the U. of I.

GUWAHATI: The Indian Tea Association (ITA) has decided to highlight health benefits of tea to attract the youth and children to consume the beverage. In 1989, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced that one of the major factors to human longevity is to consume more tea and less smoking. So, the ITA has decided to focus on the health benefits of tea to attract youth as well as children, an ITA official said.

The ITA, the apex and oldest organization of tea producers, will organize various events in schools, colleges and universities as the industry seeks to reach out to the consumers that it believes are fast turning to coffee and other beverages due to their more contemporary image.

In many countries including Iran and Pakistan, children are encouraged to drink tea instead of other beverages. But the number of children drinking tea, especially in urban India, is relatively less despite the fact that the beverage has health benefits. So we are planning to create awareness about health benefits of tea among school children so that they start drinking the beverage, the official said.

According to experts, tea is one of the few natural beverages in the world that does not contain salt, fat or any other high-calorie substance. Tea contains more than 450 organic compounds, and more than 15 inorganic minerals. Most of these components boost health and aid in disease prevention, a doctor at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital said.

In 2017, the United Nations called upon the tea industry to focus on the health benefits of tea to attract the younger generation to drinking tea. The appeal was made by the working group on global markets analysis and promotion, part of the Inter-Governmental Group on tea under the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO IGG) of the UN.

The per capita consumption of tea in India is as low as nearly 750 gm per annum though it is the largest producer of black tea in the world. The figure is lower than that in Pakistan, where the per capita consumption of tea is about 1.2 kg per annum, and other tea-drinking nations like the UK and Ireland where it is even higher at 1.6 kg and 2.3 kg respectively.

Following in their wakes have come new generations of world-class writers, photographers, flat artists, sculptors, playwrights and filmmakers. To have such a constellation descend upon your town could be paralyzing for a local writer yet McMillion has proved himself worthy to be counted in their company.

A MoJo Chat With Scott McMIllion of Montana Quarterly

Todd Wilkinson: You are a seasoned journalist and author. Whats the most satisfying thing about publishing your own magazine?

Scott McMillion: Probably working with young writers. Over the past few years, weve lost a lot of virtuoso writers whose work has appeared in the Quarterly. Jim Harrison, Ed Dobbs and Gatz Hjortsberg, most notably.

I miss those guys, but I also cherish working with young writers like Todd Burritt, Sarah Rau Peterson, Alexis Bonogofksy, Adam Boehler and many others. I also work with writers who, like me, arent exactly spring chickens, like Kim Zupan, but Id probably never get to know them if I didnt have the magazine.

I meet a lot of young people through our annual Big Snowy Contests for young writers, which has helped a few of them jumpstart careers. And the number of venues for publishing just keeps shrinking, which adds importance to what we do.

Wilkinson: As national magazines have struggled, Montana Quarterly has maintained its spirited focus, sense for finding good stories and empathetic portrayals of regular people. Where does that instinct come from?

McMillion: The stories are actually fairly easy to find, mostly because Montanans tend to be a pretty chatty bunch. Everybodys got a yarn, and most folks are willing to tell it. Picking the right story, matching it with the right writer and photographer, is the challenging part. Its part instinct, part 30 years of experience, and mostly just a love of the state and its people. Our philosophy is pretty simple: Montana is a cool place that hasnt been screwed up yet. Weve got a community of writers, photographers and readers that want to keep it that way.

Wilkinson: This puts you on the spot but what are a few of your favorite pieces youve written and a few favorites by other writers in the Quarterly stable?

McMillion: Some of the favorites Ive written:A profile of the town of Saint Marie, which is the old Glasgow Air Force Base. Thousands of people lived there in the sixties, but now the place looks like a set from a zombie movie, with hundreds of houses and other buildings that havent seen a new shingle or a coat of paint in decades. A group of Sovereign Citizens the kind of guys who like to make their own license plates bought most of it for back taxes.

Spending a few days inside the mens meth prison in Lewistown. Talk about stories to tell! These are hard cases, but when photographer Thomas Lee and I walked in the gym, 200 cons stood up and sang You are my Sunshine. That stuff just doesnt happen every day.Covering the longstanding, expensive, and, sadly, probably futile effort to restore blackfooted ferrets to Montana. I got to hold one the rarest carnivores in the world in my lap. It was exciting enough that I didnt even mind the fleas crawling all over me.

Wilkinson: You wear your pride of Livingston residency on your sleeve. How does having a vantage from Livingston on the rest of Montana differ from, say, if you were based in Bozeman?

"Montana, Warts And All" is a volume featuring some of the magazine's most resonant stories in recent years.

Livingston is a little bit Bohemian and a little bit working class, and sprinkled with millionaires, but most people get along, though we do have a few soreheads. Were close to the mountains, close to the prairies, and the Yellowstone River is always a marvel. The wildlife lives among us, right in our yards. And while they say the wind blows now and then, if you put some rocks in your pockets youll probably stay earthbound.

As for Bozeman, if Id grown up there I dont think Id still be living there. I enjoy what it has to offerthe restaurants and the performancesbut the older I get the slower I move. I think that town has outgrown me. Livingston hasnt.

Wilkinson: In times like these, the late Russell Chatham said, art speaks to drama and anxiety in the air. Why does storytelling matter especially now?

Its either a fad or a revolution, but whatever the future holds for veganism its set for another flexitarian-fuelled boom next month.

More than 100,000 people have already pledged to stick to a plant-based diet for Veganuary, double the number who took the plunge at the same time last year. The organisation behind the campaign is expanding into Germany, the US and Chile and is airing its first TV commercial after Christmas. On Sunday, we finished with about 102,000 sign-ups and that is massively more than at the same point last year, 15 December, when we had 44,000 sign-ups thats a 127% increase, Veganuarys Toni Vernelli said. It hopes to reach 350,000 by 1 January, up from 250,000 at the start of this year. The campaign is having an impact on restaurants and supermarkets, she said: The number of companies getting in touch with us who are launching products is truly mind blowing. It does just seem to be everywhere.

Marks & Spencer will have more than 100 vegan products in its Plant Kitchen range, more than any other range it has produced with a No-Chicken Kiev, a tofu-based ToFish and Chips, as well as lunch pots and snacks. Aldi has a vegan seasonal range with 10 new items, from sandwiches and ready meals to ice-cream. Iceland will expand its vegan range in January, as will Waitrose, which says its vegan Christmas sales have risen by 40% all the supermarkets made big additions to their Christmas ranges this year. Greggs, which stole the show last year with its vegan sausage roll, is expected to launch a follow-up and Burger Kings rebel whopper may reach the UK. About half the population are either not eating meat or actively reducing it, according to market researchers Mintel. The competition dairy and livestock farmers are clearly concerned, although its hard to tell exactly how much impact veganuary had last year. Initial reports from Kantar Worldpanel, which tracks consumer spending, showed that sales of meat remained fairly steady at the start of the year.

But since then the firm has charted a significant decline in sales of beef, lamb and pork, although fish and chicken have grown, and a later Kantar study showed that 1.31m people gave up animal products in January 2019.

Although many of the new products mimic meat, fish and cheese, from BBQ ribs and bleeding burgers to Camembert and smoked salmon, some vegan entrepreneurs believe they can persuade people to eat plant-based food that hasnt been manipulated.

Alex Petrides set up Allplants with his brother Jonathan in 2017 to offer vegan-only food subscription boxes frozen meals delivered to your door. We dont use synthetic ingredients, Petrides said, but we do use the language people are familiar with and can connect to. We believe its possible to create all the expressions that people have come to expect from food and all the emotional and nutritional qualities purely using plants.

Not only headlines have held the names of these wellness trends, celebrity social media posts have also promoted certain diets.

The keto diet, for example, has gotten praise from"Jersey Shore" star Vinny Guadagnino, which he credits for losing 50 pounds. And although they never directly referenceketo,Khloe Kardashian andVanessa Hudgens both credit their weight loss to a high fat, low carb diet.

The doctor's buzzworthy brainchild caught on to the mainstream in 2019, however, withPinterest reporting a 337% increase in people searching for the term as of October.

"While Pegan involves leaving out certain foods like refined sugar and flour, conventionally raised animal products and chemical additives its so much more focused on what we can eat for optimal health," Hyman explained to USA TODAY partnerMakeItGrateful.com.

He continued, "Eating this way means you dont have to count calories because when you eat the whole, nutrient-dense foods, youre naturally satiated."

Most people are aware of fasting for religious reasons, but 2019 brought a whole new meaning to the practice when paired with the word "intermittent."

The trendy dieting advice suggestalternating between certain periods of eating and not eating. The methodhas been used as a way to lose weight and for other benefits. A study from The National Institute on Aging last year suggests that intermittent fasting could be the key to longevity.

Food fasting isn't the only kind to pop up this year, either.

Dopamine fasting has become a mindfulness practice that has taken off at the end of the year, about a year after Youtuber Improvement Pill published a video where he perhaps coined the term while describing his routine meant to Get Your Life Back Together, as the video title says.

Theres so much to think about when starting the vegan diet and it can get a little confusing to know how much of food groups a person will need to eat. With so many vegan type diets and know how articles online, its easy to miss the important considerations a beginner will need know. But getting it right can make all the difference, so here are some tips to think about before embarking on your first vegan diet.

MAIN NUTRIENTS TO KEEP IN MIND

Iron is one of the main nutrients to keep in mind when starting a vegan diet. The types of food groups to satisfy the level of intake is through plant-based foods like legumes, tofu, nuts and seeds, whole-grains, dried fruits and dark green, leafy vegetables.

Accredited practising dietitian and Spokesperson for the Dietitians Association of Australia Melanie McGrice said the iron level intake is generally around 18mg for women aged 19-50.

From having a handful of seeds, youre going to get maybe 1 or 2mg of iron but not the full 18mg and so thats where its about the whole of your diet and planning for each meal. Ms McGrice said.

For men aged 19-50, the adequate intake for iron is 8mg.

Dietitians Association of Australia reports the type of iron in plant-based foods (non-haem iron) is not easily absorbed, so in order to boost the absorption of iron in plant-based foods is to include food meals rich with vitamin C. This would mean including berries, citrus fruit, Kiwi fruit, capsicum, tomatoes and broccoli.

Along with iron, nutrients such as B12, Calcium, Omega-3 fats, Zinc and Choline will need to be kept in mind according to Ms McGrice.

REPLACEMENTS AND PLANNING IS KEY

Sustaining balanced nutrients while on a vegan diet can be hard to do, especially if youre starting out for the first time. Many people worry about getting enough iron intake or if they get enough protein. But according to Ms McGrice, replacements and planning is key in getting the adequate intake.

According to practising dietitians, this diet involves food groups like fruit and vegetables, bread, cereals, and grains, legumes (lentils, chickpeas, dried beans), soy food like tofu and tempeh, and nuts and seeds.

Ms McGrice said its beneficial to really plan out your diet each day to make sure that nutritional needs are met. Its not about eating these food groups on its own but food groups that are complimentary as well.

Instead of having dairy, youll be having dairy alternatives such as soy milk and for Omega 3 options include foods such as chia seeds. Ms McGrice said.

With calcium it will be about having something like tahini and green, leafy vegetables and for iron, seeds are a good source, she said.

Zinc in plant-based foods are commonly found in legumes, nuts, seeds and oatmeal, and for a balanced intake of Choline, it appears in plant-based foods in small amounts.

Its beneficial to know food groups that contain these nutrients and by eating a well-balanced vegan diet with plenty of whole foods such as tofu, quinoa, and broccoli, its ensuring the daily requirements that are rich in resources.

I guess the key thing is that youre not going to get all of your nutrients just from one of those food types, Ms McGrice said.

The best way for a nutritional balance is ensuring to have complementary proteins within the same meal, she said.

COMMON MISTAKES

There are common mistakes made that affect nutrient adequate intake according to Ms McGrice. Sometimes these common mistakes can be tricky, even for those who have been and currently are on vegan diets.

Not having complementary protein in food groups within each meal is a common mistake its the kind of thinking that theyre going to meet the entire nutrient needs just by eating one food group with a particular nutrient, Ms McGrice said.

Just because someone eats a cup of broccoli doesnt mean that theyre going to meet all of their calcium needs. As mentioned before, its better to plan each meal with complementary proteins.

Ms McGrice said its easier to make an appointment with an accredited practising dietitian to help you to design a plan thats best for starting a vegan diet for the first time.

Or attend a vegan support group and get some practical tips to help you through the process, said Ms McGrice.

POTENTIAL SIDE EFFECTS

A vegan diet, if not done correctly, has potential for negative side effects.

Iron and B12 deficiency are a common, negative side effect if the nutrient requirements are not met according to Ms McGrice. The body cant make iron itself, so food is needed.

Having an annual blood test is a good idea to check your nutritional profile, Ms McGrice said.

The main cause for iron deficiency, according to Ms McGrice, can be caused by not eating enough iron rich foods. Some people, like children and teenagers, and pregnant women need more iron than others.

Vitamin B12 is needed to help the blood form and for the brain and nervous system to function properly.

The common symptoms of B12 deficiency include tiredness, light-headedness, rapid heart rate, easy bruising and bleeding, weight loss.
