A vegan diet could help cut the risk of developing diabetes and cardiovascular disease, a new study has shown.

Medichecks, which supplies at-home medical test kits, said analysis of its data on more than 21,000 UK residents had identified several benefits for those who had become vegans.

Among the Nottingham-based company's findings were lower average blood glucose levels, increased levels of HDL cholesterol, known as "good cholesterol", and lower levels of unhealthy cholesterol.

These factors, taken together, could help lessen the risk of developing diabetes and cardiovascular disease, according to researchers.

After comparing bio-markers from 943 vegans with 20,607 non-vegans, from data collected over the past 12 months, the company's medical experts said vegans could "legitimately claim to be healthier".

The study comes during Veganuary, with more than 300,000 people pledging to eliminate animal products from their diet this month.

Overnight, there were 20-minute queues outside Greggs, in Newcastle, as the bakery's branch hosted the launch of the eatery's new vegan steak bake.

KFC and Subway are also among firms releasing snacks free from meat and animal products.

Responding to the study, GP and head of clinical excellence at Medichecks Dr Natasha Fernando, said the evidence showed the risk of developing diabetes was lower in vegans, adding that she had seen firsthand how it could benefit those already diagnosed with the disease.

Dr Fernando said: "I met a patient in November 2018 at my GP clinic when she described feeling unusually tired and low in energy.

"Blood tests revealed a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes which was incredibly disheartening for her.

"She feared she would end up like her diabetic uncle, who was on over 10 different medications and also unfortunate enough to develop further complications from this condition such a heart attack in his early fifties and nerve damage to his limbs.

"Being keen to avoid medication, I pointed her in the direction of a few studies which showed successful treatment of diabetes from diet and lifestyle changes.

"This led her to implement a wholefood, plant-based vegan diet.

"Within two months she lost over 5kg and progressed from having an overweight BMI to a normal BMI, and after three months of this wholefood plant-based diet, she was even more ecstatic to find her follow-up blood test was normal.

"Her diabetes had been reversed."

Dr Fernando said the popularity of veganism could no longer be passed off as a fad.

"Vegans have almost 14 percentlower non-HDL cholesterol," she said.

"This is a measure of all the unhealthy forms of cholesterol within the blood such as LDL and VLDL cholesterol which are associated with an increased risk of developing heart disease.

"Vegans were also found to have five percenthigher levels of HDL cholesterol, which is a good cholesterol that removes other forms of cholesterol from the blood stream."

She added that by cutting back on certain food groups, vegans did need to watch their vitamin B12 levels and particularly make sure they were getting enough iron.

Dr Fernando said: "While there's no need to start taking iron supplements unless there is a proven deficiency, vegans should ensure that they have very good iron intake.

"This includes eating lots of dark green vegetables, lentils and beans, tofu, nuts and seeds."

Many, including myself, will have been panicked into action by the threat of irreversible climate change, or shamed into it by brilliantly single-minded young people.

In fact, ever since Extinction Rebellion, Greta Thunberg and millions of school children took to the streets to demand climate action, I have been attempting to change my diet. Every time I switch out dairy or meat, however, I question whether the alternatives really are better for the environment.

Dr Adrian Williams, who specialises in environmental systems at Cranfield University, says: That all sounds very noble and almost impossible to answer. The hint of mockery is fair. My question undoubtedly stems from a love of cheese, and dislike of tea made with milk alternatives.

We chatted with the lead Ayurvedic Counselor at Boston's Down Under School of Yoga in Brookline to get the low-down on this ancient Indian practice.

If youre starting the new year with some winter doldrums and struggling to meet unrealistic fitness goals, maybe what you need isnt a laundry list of resolutions but a fresh perspective on health. Insert: Ayurveda.

Everything that goes on in the universe, and in our lives, is a transfer of energy. We put food into our bodies to create energy. We interact with one another and either pass on energy or take energy. And as the seasons change, we experience a monumental shift in energy. Think back to the summer: You probably had a lot more energy during the dog days of August than you do now. This is what the ancient Indian practice of Ayurveda is all about: Balancing energy systems with the cycles of nature.

It can be a hard thing to conceptualize since city living has become so far removed from nature. Plus, Boston is teeming with technology. Even the wellness industry is filled with new and innovative ways to help us become healthier, stronger, and betterfaster. And theres nothing inherently wrong with the push for more, but at what point do we sacrifice intuition for innovation and the betterment of the collective for solitary prestige?

We chatted with Claire Este McDonald, nurse and lead Ayurvedic Counselor at Bostons Down Under School of Yoga in Brookline, to get a better understanding of Ayurveda and how to apply it to everyday lifeespecially, and most importantly, while living amidst the hustle and bustle of a city.

The answer: Maybe. But remember, diets dont work. Its about consistent and healthy lifestyle habits, which is what the ancient Indian practice of Ayurveda is all about.

To understand Ayurveda, you have to understand the five elements of naturespace, air, fire, water, and earththat, combined, make up the three doshas, or energies, that all Ayurveda principles rely on. The three doshas are Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. We all have some aspects of each dosha, but for the most part, lean heavily towards one. There are multiple online questionnaires to help you find out which doshas youre made ofbut like any personality test, take it with a grain of salt.

McDonald explains that Vata energy embodies the elements of space and air and is the energy of movement. Pitta reflects the qualities of fire and water and resembles transformation, while Kapha embodies water and earth and personifies structure.

She points out that none of us are the same, as in all things. By understanding which energies we are made up of, we can better maintain our nutrition and exercise to instill balance throughout the seasons, because as we move throughout the different seasons, these energies are higher during different times.

In the fall we begin to have more roughness and coldness in the air, or Vata energy, McDonald says. It becomes very mobile, light, and dry, and those who have higher Vata qualities might notice dryer skin, stiffer joints, a harder time getting going in the morning, and your energy might become more erratic.

Conversely, in the summer, Pitta energy is higher and we crave lighter foods, our moods are boosted, and our overall morale is a little livelier. Which seems rudimentary, but there are lessons to be garnered through Ayurveda. And as McDonald tells me, it all comes down to how well were digesting our food.

In the winter, we need nourishing foods that are grounding, she says. Its why our bodies crave heavier and denser foods like soups and stews. She recommends incorporating spices like ginger, turmeric, coriander, and cumin to your meals as well as fennel. And she says when you sit down to eat, dont hold backeat, and eat a lot.

Grounding exercise in the winter is also a good idea. But overexercise is not good, she adds. Do things you are drawn to and exercise to the point where your upper lip becomes sweaty. It cleans the skin and the channels of the body to improve circulation, and at the end of the day, its basically a way to get your bowels moving. Because, as stated earlier, its all about how well youre digesting your food.

In the summer, all the opposites are true. You might not be as hungry, McDonald says, so you want to consume foods that stimulate digestive firewhat she calls our ability to digest food in an appropriate manner. Foods that fit the bill include parsley, coriander, and cilantro, and she suggests also taking advantage of the bountiful harvest of fresh fruits and vegetables during this time of year.

The basics of Ayurveda are simple: Eat with the seasons and listen to your body. But theres a whole system of practices and diagnostics beyond nutrition and exercise to explore that an Ayurvedic practitioner can help you with. And as with all things related to a healthy lifestyle, its about creating a routine you, and only you, can maintain.

Sometimes we act as if were the only people that exist in the universe, McDonald says. The universe has an impact on everyone and energy is constantly flowingit cannot be created nor destroyed. Its simply transferred. How is it flowing through you and what can you do to optimize it? We have more control over our health than we realize.

SAN DIEGO Live Well San Diego kicked off its 10th anniversary celebration this weekend with a pair of fun activities. San Diego Countys vision for a region that is healthy, safe and thriving was celebrated at a San Diego Gulls ice hockey game and during the grand opening of the new Sweetwater Bike Park.

During their game against the Bakersfield Condors on Saturday night, the San Diego Gulls became the newestLive Well San Diego partner, bringing the total number of recognized partner organizations to 479. The Gulls were presented with a proclamation from the San Diego County Board of Supervisors recognizing the organizations commitment to advancing the Live Well San Diego vision.

We were proud to welcome the San Diego Gulls as a Live Well San Diego partner during Saturdays game. It was great so many County of San Diego employees were in attendance, said Supervisor Nathan Fletcher. Athletes and sports teams understand the importance of living a healthy lifestyle and set a great example for all of us. The hard work and dedication the Gulls make daily to Live Well San Diego should be an inspiration to us all. Its great to have them on the Live Well team.

Launched in 2010, the Live Well San Diego vision was created by San Diego County in response to statistics that found that throughout the nation and locally three behaviors (poor nutrition, lack of physical activity and tobacco use) were contributing to four diseases (heart disease/stroke, cancer, Type 2 diabetes and respiratory conditions) that resulted in more than 50% of deaths in the county.

To address these issues, the county partnered with schools, government agencies, businesses, neighborhood-based organizations and other entities to leverage existing resources to improve the health and well-being of all County residents.

Whether it is sticking to a new diet, increasing physical activity,or quitting tobacco, Huron County Public Health (HCPH) is here to help and encourages residents tostick to it.

General goals such as I want to be healthier in 2020, have good intentions, but oftentimes are hardto define and become unsustainable. However, taking those good intentions and breaking themdown into a few small goals can help keep you on track of reaching that new healthy lifestyle.

HCPH recommends the following steps for a healthier new year:

Make an appointment for a check-up, vaccination, or screening. Regular exams and tests canhelp find problems before they start. They also can help find problems early, when yourchances for treatment and cure are better.

Wash your hands often with soap and water to prevent the spread of infection and illness.

Make healthy food choices. A healthy eating plan includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains,and fat-free or low-fat milk products. It also includes lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs,and nuts, and is low in saturated fats, cholesterol, salt (sodium), and added sugars. Startsmall and reduce your consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages like pop and juice anddrink more water instead.

Get active. Start by taking the stairs instead of the elevator, or parking further from yourdestination. Consider mall walking if the weather is cold or icy. Adults should get at least 2 1/2 hours a week of moderate-intensity physical activity.

Be smokefree. If you are ready to quit, call 1-800-QUIT-NOW (1-800-784-8669) or 1-855-DJELO-YA (1-855-335-3569 for Spanish speakers) for free resources, including free quitcoaching, a free quit plan, free educational materials, and referrals to other resources whereyou live.

Get enough sleep. Insufficient sleep is associated with a number of chronic diseases andconditions such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and depression. Adultsneed seven or more hours per night.

Manage stress a good diet, sufficient sleep (at least 7 1/2 hours per night), daily exercise andwellness activities, like yoga and meditation, are key ingredients to maintaining and improving your mental health, but dont hesitate to ask for help from a mental healthprofessional when you need it.

As a result of getting fit and healthy with a friend, 62 percent agree they are more likely to stick with a new plan. And one in four believes they burn off more calories when working out with a friend than they do alone. A third of those polled in the study, commissioned by WW Weight Watchers even admitted they would give up sooner without the help of another person to keep them going. Half put the success with a friend down to feeling more motivated, 44 percent enjoy planning meals together and a quarter prefers having someone to exercise with.

But the average adult admitted to falling out of a gym routine after 10 weeks and slipping up around eight weeks into a diet.

Zoe Griffiths, the global director of nutrition at WW: It's interesting to see how much of a positive influence a partner can have on Brits sticking to diet plans and fitness routines.

"Whether it's giving up something together such as chocolate, or hitting milestones together like five or 10k runs, it always helps having someone else going through the same emotions.

"You're more likely to stick to a wellness commitment or diet when you do it with someone else you can lean on for support and motivation.

"It helps you to be more open and honest about your diet, makes activities like working out more enjoyable and softens the fear of failure."

The study also found two thirds are planning on getting healthy with their other half, while a fifth is taking the plunge with a friend.

An eighth are even attempting to make a lifestyle change with their colleague.

A third of those polled admitted they usually need to be motivated when sticking to a health plan, with their friend considered to be the best at giving them a boost when they need it.

More than a fifth (22 percent) also said it's easier to be active if it means spending time with a relative or buddy.

And one in four finds following a plan with a fitness partner both confidence boosting and fun.

A further 22 percent said if they're following an exercise regime with a companion they wouldn't quit even if they wanted to because they wouldn't want to be the one to let the team down.

Similarly, three in 10 admitted to cancelling on a gym buddy in the past, which left 48 percent feeling guilty and more than a quarter feeling lazy.

When it comes to eating, one in four prefer meal-planning with someone else rather than going it alone and 15 percent admitted it is most difficult to stick to a healthy diet when eating out with friends.

A fifth of those polled struggle with their food plans when on holiday.

Zoe Griffiths added: "With the pressure of new year, new you ever prevalent, we want people to feel as though they are set-up for the best possible chance of success when it comes to achieving their wellness goals.

"A unique WW insight has shown than members who join together are likely to lose up to 14 per cent more weight than those who join alone, so the results from this study make total sense."

New Years resolutions typically attract more people into gyms. Many people want to start off January on the right foot. They set their alarm and drag themselves to the gym early and in the cold weather. This seems like a good idea and it is, however people are hitting the gym at the height of cold and flu season.

It also turns out the gym can be a dirty place.

Numerous studies have shown that gyms can be a breeding ground for those cold and flu viruses, as well as E. coli, MRSA and other bacteria and virus strains that can quickly make you sick and take you out of your day to day routine.

Where are the gym germs hiding?

The biggest thing about the gym is there are a lot of areas where germs, viruses and fungus can be year-round, explained Bryan Combs, CRNP, a nurse practitioner at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing.

While the towels have been washed, a lot of gyms use the same container to carry dirty towels to the washing area and then use the same one to bring clean towels back, so they can become contaminated again.

Combs recommends bringing your own clean towel to make sure you avoid contamination with the germs from dirty towels. In addition, he explains how it is also important to always wash your towel after each workout, too.

Locker rooms and showers are other unsanitary places at the gym. Combs stresses how important protecting your feet by wearing shoes in all areas of the gym, but especially in bathrooms. If you sit down, make sure a clean towel is placed on top of the bench or seat.

Walking barefoot in locker rooms or showers is an easy way to contract MRSA or pick up a fungal infection like athletes foot. By wearing clean shoes, you can prevent catching something that is spread by skin contact.

Staying hydrated is key when participating in physical activities. While using reusable water bottles is recommended and good for the environment, it is important to always wash them after every use.

Some people use the same water bottle each time they go to the gym. If you dont take it home and wash it, and you go to the gym a few or several days a week, the water bottle could be covered in bacteria.

Combs says soap and hot water are the best ways to wash the bottles after each visit to the gym.

If you are tempted to keep your sweaty clothes on, experts say you may want to reconsider.

As soon as you leave the gym, you should change clothes as soon as possible. A lot of people continue to wear their sweaty clothes for an hour or hour and a half. Its important to take those off and shower as soon as you can after a workout.

Last, gym bags are often the most overlooked germ carriers.

Think about it, they tote around dirty shoes, clothes and water bottles, but are rarely cleaned. To prevent the spread of germs, it is important to always spray the bags with a disinfectant spray to kill the bacteria. Oils not only hydrate the skin, but because they are rich in antioxidants, they also fight free radical damage to cells, thereby preventing further aging. The global cosmetic oil market size is expected to top $72 billion by 2025, a CAGR of 5.2%, according to Grand View Research Inc. Increasing use of beauty oils by the hair and skin care industries is the key factor driving the growth of the market. In the US, emollients are forecast to achieve the fastest growth during the period of 2018-2023, according to Nikola Matic, director of the chemicals and materials practice at Kline & Company. Oils provide occlusion, which means they help seal-in moisture that is already there, imparting a glowing, plumped and refreshed facial look. They provide skin with essential nutrients like fatty acids, that help maintain moisture and increase its ability to protect itself against the environment. Oils are excellent for spot skin applications delivering desired skin benefits. Oils easily pass through the lipid layers of the skin, preventing water loss and creating an immediate plumping action.

Lipids are produced by cells in the stratum corneum, the protective outer layer of skin that functions as the skins primary protection against water loss. The oils keep skin layers soft, seal in hydration, and protect against allergens and pathogens, by keeping the stratum corneum intact. Hydration is really a function of water balance, so oils help keep water in, and prevents the environment from stripping water out, according to Dermatologist Tyler Hollowig. But price doesnt always match performance. Good Housekeeping blind-tested 56 face oils by 1,112 volunteers to narrow the field to 16, which were then lab-tested for moisturization. The winner? Laura Mercier Infusion de Rose Nourishing Oil. It is combination of 10 natural oils including rose hip and sunflower oils. It kept skin hydrated for six hours. Palmers Cocoa Butter Formula Skin Therapy Oil provided the best value, according to GH. It contains exotic oils like argan, camellia and coconut. It made skin look plumper and smoother. For sensitive skin, theres Jurlique Purely Age-Defying Firming Face Oil. It contains safflower, macadamia and avocado oils. It diminished red, splotchy areas and made skin balanced, even and clear, according to GH.

It moisturizes, boosts elasticity, nourishes, soothes, evens skin tone and reduces the signs of aging, including fine lines and wrinkles. It absorbs quickly leaving no residue, according to the brand.

Oils should be applied on clean damp skin by gently pressing them on the face. Wet skin will lock-in the moisture. According to Cecelia Wong, a holistic skin care expert, tea tree is the best oil for acne. Studies have found that 5% tea tree oil is as effective as 5% benzoyl peroxide. Dermatologist Leslie Bowmann recommends tea tree oil as a gentle natural acne treatment. For oily skin, grape seed oil helps regulate natural oil production. It is rich in vitamin C and antioxidants.

Wongs entire anti-aging skin care line is based on argan oil. Rare and expensive, it smooths fine lines and wrinkles while moisturizing skin. Argan oil contains high concentrations of vitamin E and fatty acids, which are more stable in sunlight than other antioxidants, which is ideal for daily wear products. so you can wear all day. Wongs favorite reparative treatment is black currant oil, which is rich in fatty acids and has anti-inflammatory properties. It is even said to improve eczema. For sensitive skin, chamomile oil calms skin, reduces redness and soothes irritation in a matter of seconds. It has amazing anti-inflammatory properties that make it ideal for rosacea patients. Rose hip seed oil has healing power and improves skin discoloration.

Facial oils are non-comedogenic, non-greasy and are highly effective for removing makeup and are the best sources for cleansing dry, dehydrated, or sensitive skin. Dermatologist Mona Gohara recommends oils as facial cleansers, as they are especially good at removing silicone and synthetic makeup ingredients. Unlike soap, when you rinse an oil cleanser, it wont strip skin. Also, the carrier oils, which are antioxidant-rich, neutralize free radicals that cause signs of aging. Dr. Debra Jaliman, professor of dermatology, Mount Sinai Hospital, recommends Tatcha Pure One Step Camellia Cleansing Oil because it contains camellia and rice bran oils. These traditional Japanese oils are said to have anti-aging, softening and deep hydrating properties due to a combination of antioxidants, fatty acids and vitamin E.

Bare Mineral Oil Obsessed Total Cleansing Oil cleanses, moisturizes, softens and smooths dehydrated skin for an overall healthier complexion. Simple Hydrating Cleansing Oil is lightweight, thin, and cleans and moisturizes skin. It wipes off dirt without removing natural oils. Neutrogena Ultra Light Facial Cleansing Oil and Makeup Remover is a non-comedogenic cleanser. Josie Moran Argan Cleansing Oil effectively removes makeup and other impurities.

Oil-based products are one of the best ways to add moisture to the skin, according to Engelman and Bhansali. They are easily absorbed and penetrate deeply. However, they do not recommend coconut oil for the face because it clogs the pores and could cause breakouts, also it ranks very high on the comedogenicity scale. Most people find this oil very fast absorbing and similar to natural sebum, which makes it very popular as a face and body moisturizer for most skin types. It is virtually odorless, so it could be ideal for an unscented body oil. It mixes well with essential oils. She recommends rose hip oil for sensitive skin. For acne and eczema, Nicola Weir, a esthetician, recommends kiwi seed oil. Kiwi seed oil is high in omega 3 fatty acids, alpha linoleic acid and vitamin C. It calms inflammation and retains moisture. Cold-pressed borage seed oil is high in gamma linolenic acid, and is a proven anti-inflammatory oil for people suffering from eczema and psoriasis. It really helps reduce redness, too. Camellia seed oil has been shown clinically to increase collagen production and help improve skins ability to stay hydrated.

Among luxury dry oils, Jo Malone absorbs well, has a long-lasting scent and is recommended by Dermatologist Michelle Greene. Although dry oils are light and are absorbed quickly, you might want to consider a spray if you are looking for a less greasy application.

Oil may be king, but no data exists to prove that any of these products provide any therapeutic benefits beyond moisturizing skin. The popularity of facial oils may be due, at least in part, to their natural positioning.

No, youre not imagining it: Everyone and their mother is trying out the ketogenic diet, or keto these days. Its a way to improve your bodys operating system, lose weight and increase both your physical and mental performance. There are plenty of success stories out there, so its no wonder that people are hopping on the bandwagon.

The premise of the diet is that, by eating a diet high in fat, low in carbs and with moderate amounts of protein, your body will go into ketosis. During this stage, your body burns fat for energy, leading to quick weight loss.

Traveling is supposed to be fun and relaxed, therefore simplicity is key when it comes to staying keto on your trip, said Lotte Damen, a low-carb registered dietitian from the Netherlands and the founder of Lots of Keto. Stick to keto basics such as green veggies, avocados, cheese, nuts, fatty meats, fish, oils, eggs and butter, and find restaurants and food markets that offer local, yet relatively keto-friendly foods.

Intermittent fasting (IF) is another popular diet and nutrition strategy. In short, its an eating pattern that cycles between periods of eating and, well, fasting.

For example, youre probably fasting already between your last meal at night and your first one the next day (hence the name breakfast). The time between these two meals is your fasting period. If you considered extending that time by a few hours say, by skipping lunch the next day you can extend your fasting time to 16 hours. Thats the magic number thats considered optimal for intermittent fasting. Youd eat your meals during the remaining eight hours of the day.

As with keto, the benefits of intermittent fasting go far beyond fat loss. Many intermittent fasters report feeling sharper mentally at work since they dont experience blood sugar spikes and crashes.

It also makes a lot of sense for traveling. After all, its not hard to simply skip the less-than-stellar plane meals and overpriced airport food. Intermittent fasting gives you flexibility to eat what you want, too, since you dont have to find or pack certain foods. You can simply shift your eating window based on your travel schedule and stick to coffee, tea or water in the interim.

The Paleo diet takes a cue from our ancestors our really old ancestors. Specifically, the ones who lived in the Paleolithic period. They only ate natural, unprocessed foods and the premise behind the diet is to do just that. Your body was designed to burn fats for energy, and the thought process here is that the abundance of carbs in the modern diet has sabotaged our bodies.

Meats, fish, eggs, vegetables, fruits, nuts and oils are the name of the game here. Like the keto diet, youre aiming to avoid artificial and manmade foods such as bread, pasta and rice. Seems easy enough at home, but what about on the road?

Preparation is truly the key to staying paleo while traveling, said Ellen Jaworski, a certified health coach and the founder of Triple Peak Wellness. Pack paleo snacks or food to get you to your destination, and then know what apps or guides you can use to find paleo-friendly cafes, restaurants and grocery stores. And if all else fails, dont stress. Stress is bad for digestion.

Paleo is one of the more travel-friendly diets. Its not difficult to find meals high in fat and protein in most airports, hotels and restaurants. Often, you may end up ordering some eggs and bacon for breakfast at the hotel; a burger (without the bun) for lunch; and a chicken salad for dinner.

Just skip the pasta sorry!

Unlike the paleo and ketogenic diets, the F-Factor diet promotes carbohydrates. In fact, instead of subtracting foods, its all about adding the right ones all while making room for the foods you love. Its more of a lifestyle that encourages sustainable weight loss and maintenance than a typical diet.

It goes without saying that being vegan is easier in some locations than others. Portland and Tel Aviv, for example, are certainly more vegan-friendly than Dallas (Texans love their barbecue and meat, after all) and Paris (the French put butter in everything).

But dont book your travel based on what countries and cities are the most vegan-friendly. Just be prepared.

Finding a vegan restaurant or food market is as easy as downloading an app. HappyCow and PlantEaters have lists of vegan food options in multiple countries, complete with pictures and reviews. In short: Theyre a vegan travelers best friend.

Of course, you can also pack your own snacks in your bag, or even choose a rental home or a hostel with a kitchen instead of a hotel. That will give you the flexibility to cook your own meals without relying on what youre provided with.

Sticking to your healthy lifestyle while traveling really comes down to perception and balance. Aiming for healthy and responsible food choices around 80% of the time will still allow you to enjoy yourself, all while honoring your intentions and keeping your body aligned with your chosen diet. Be prepared by packing snacks and scoping out food choices ahead of time so you can spend more time actually enjoying your trip.

The wellness industry is selling you the myth that a healthy life is expensive – The Guardian

I did not intend to have a spa experience. The plan was to go for afternoon tea, but the spa next door was included in the price. And so arrived a wellbeing menu, where one could choose between seaweed wraps to purify and a meditative steam room with energising lights to destress. I thought massage was the least worst option, but after it was explained to me how it would detoxify and re-energise me, I felt a potent mixture of despair and rage.

Wellbeing as a modern concept causes me existential pain. Holistically upgraded hotels (including enemas and medi-spas) offer wellbeing weekends. Employers can buy corporate packages for workplace wellness, which will apparently increase productivity and reduce rates of sick leave. You can take spin classes in London that cost more than 20 a time (you could buy an actual bike for the same price as five of those) where you get offered wellness vitamin shots and earplugs as standard to help drown out the pounding music.

The modern iteration of wellness defined, at least in part, by the need to purchase something to have it piggybacks on the multibillion-dollar diet, supplement and fitness industry. A report from the Sports Think Tank claims that one in seven Brits are members of a gym, with the industry now worth more than 5bn. Some gyms take wellness to surreal levels some offer cryotherapy, which involves standing in a space cooled to extremely low temperatures (to prevent signs of ageing and improve recovery, apparently), others have treadmills complete with oxygen vaporisers (to supposedly increase endurance.) Meanwhile, the diet book phenomenon has reached epic proportions.

Rather than wellbeing being straightforward (dont smoke, dont drink too much, do exercise you like, eat a variety of foods, with lots of vegetables and little processed stuff, see people and do things) the industry has created its own mythology. Wellbeing is presented as complicated, complex, difficult to achieve correctly and best when purchased all while requiring gurus to access it. This entanglement of industries makes what should be straightforward a healthy lifestyle into a complicated consumerist mess.

This doesnt mean that diet and exercise arent important. A global review published in the Lancet in 2017 found that more physical activity was associated with longer lives and fewer heart attacks and strokes. This included not just formal gym-going exercise but walking and housework. In other words, you dont have to tie yourself to a treadmill to get fit.

A review published recently in the British Journal of Sports Medicine concluded: Any amount of running, even just once a week, is better than no running, but higher doses of running may not necessarily be associated with greater mortality benefits. Obsession isnt necessary some space, a pair of trainers and a bit of time may be all you need. If you are spending money you dont have on kit, or neglecting your family or work because of the need to do it, that doesnt sound like wellbeing.

The same goes for the diet industry. Weight loss is certainly a mainstay of treatment for some conditions, and the evidence points to wholegrains, fruit and vegetables, variety and olive oil as associated with better health. Yet the media onslaught of experts arguing for their diet over another is liable to make onlookers believe there is no broad agreement in food science about anything. Many dietitians are standing up for evidence-based advice, but much of the media concoct the illusion that a healthy diet is obtainable only via a particular belief system. Here, the very idea of pleasurable eating is immoral.

The worst thing about modern incarnations of wellbeing is that they devolve responsibility for health on to individuals via a commercial market. The environment we live in should be designed to maximise our health. Exercise should be joyful; at its best, we should hardly know that we are doing it. Street play used to be common now in many areas it requires special schemes to give children priority over cars for short periods of time. We need to turn our understanding of wellbeing on its head: away from individuals and towards populations.

We need better infrastructure for walking and cycling so they become the primary method of urban transport. We should be able to cycle safely in everyday clothes, and it should be easier and faster than driving. It should be possible for children to walk to school without worrying about traffic. Our wellbeing should not be measured by how thin we are. Policies such as minimum alcohol pricing and mitigating the food deserts more than a million UK residents are estimated to live in with limited access to affordable fresh fruit and vegetables are far more likely to yield meaningful improvements in our collective health.

My preferred definition of wellness is not something offered by the contemporary wellness marketplace. It means not being sleepless with worry about a review of sickness benefits; it means not living in a damp house, and not working in a job with hours so variable and erratic that affordable childcare cant be managed. It would be nice for wellness to mean that being poorer wont impact on your lifespan, or your chances of being diagnosed with chronic diseases. Real, societal wellness is about fairness, public responsibility, science and evidence. It will certainly not come to us via an oxgyen-diffusing machine on a treadmill.

January 1s arrival often is accompanied by steadfast New Years resolutions.

Among the top five again this year will be losing weight.

Chef Michael Gomez of Smith River is seizing on the year 2020 to zero in healthy eating. Like 20/20 vision, I want people to focus this year on what is really important for a healthier lifestyle, Gomez said.

He said hes worked in restaurants all his life, over the years feeding celebrities such as John Travolta, Steve McQueen, James Gardner and Ronald Regan.

That is, until he made a career change. I went from the stars to the bars, said Gomez.

He subsequently worked as a chef in the prison system for 28 years. On March 5, 1990, Gomez became one of the original employees when Pelican Bay State Prison opened north of Crescent City.

Pelican Bay was the first prison in the state to hire a nutritionist. So, I was around food 24/7, Gomez said.

And being around food had its downside. At one point, Gomez weighed 350 pounds, thanks to a genetic propensity toward obesity. His brother tried to address his extreme weight by having gastric bypass surgery, Gomez said, only to die seven days later from medical complications.

He said gastric bypass surgery and its reduced-diet requirements remains the No. 1 extreme weight-loss strategy, with a 75% success rate. Number 2 is Weight Watchers, followed by Jenny Craig and Keto.

Regardless of which diet individuals try, said Gomez, he suggests three steps: eat only when youre hungry, eat a balanced diet, and stop when you feel full.

Following those simple guidelines, Gomez said he lost 150 pounds and has kept it off for 20 years.

After retiring from Pelican Bay in 2017, he has brought his knowledge to young people, teaching kids how to cook through school district education programs. The district allowed me to let them cook in the school, then in their home, he said.

Through his youth cooking classes, Gomez began working with Sonny Baker, the SNAP Education program coordinator for the Del Norte County Department of Health and Human Services.

Her healthy-living programs, such as Food Smart, are taught by community members like Gomez, people she calls champions of change.

Baker said her programs are part of CalFresh Healthy Living, funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, with additional state and county financing.

Theyre based on American Dietary Guidelines promoting an overall healthy lifestyle, nutrition and physical activity.

One of the local initiatives were working with in the community is Champions for Change, (people) who demonstrate that healthy change is possible through their lifestyle changes, who overcome obstacles and struggles, using their stories and testimonies, Baker said.

We give people encouragement, motivation and inspiration that lead into changes.

She said one of the programs newest workshops is Food Smart, which tailors healthy tips and dietary guidelines to those who attend. The workshops are taught by 10 champions from the community - including Gomez.

The overall guidelines show anyone can practice lifestyle changes with built-in habits, such as reading labels, using recipes and networking with other community members resources.

Its about creating a community... Creating a healthy individual, creating a safe space to learn that addresses their needs and struggles. It helps them make the journey to good health because they are empowered.

Other champions for change involved in the countys workshops include Alexander Dairy, Rumiano Cheese Co. and the Open Door Community Health Center.

There are other people like us who are what we call healthy nuts. My goal is to be a healthy town, Gomez said.

He added that while Baker teaches knowledge, he teaches habits.

One habit hed like to see, especially in youth, is to give up soda pop.

What happens when you drink soda? Soda has 6 tablespoons of sugar in it. Every tablespoon of sugar kills 14,000 white blood cells.

When does the flu season start? October. Thats when we eat a lot of sugar, he said.

What Im teaching is not how to lose weight. The five leading diseases dont start with obesity. Its heart disease. Then colon and prostate and breast cancer. Then misdiagnoses. Diabetes and then obesity.

He said the greatest roadblock to weight loss is hormonal imbalance. So, he tailors his diets to the individuals needs.

What I teach, in general, is wellness. And once they understand the wellness of their bodies, then I teach hunger patterns.

Armed with his knowledge of food, Gomez provides specific healthy-living guidelines for whichever diet someone is on, be it Keto, gastric bypass surgery, Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig or others.

Gomez breaks down his healthy lifestyle guidelines to six key points:

1 - Eat only when youre hungry. You dont need to eat three square meals a day to sustain a healthy lifestyle or weight-loss program.

2 - Watch your portion size. Your stomach is a fuel tank, not a storage tank. Eat what gets burned up by daily activity, not in quantities that require long-term storage.

3 - Hang out with family and friends who also like to be healthy.

4 - Make time for some exercise. A healthy lifestyle is diet and exercise. Consider the benefits of low-impact water aerobics or swimming.

5 - Keep an eye out for club or community programs that can help your lifestyle change, such as Del Norte Countys Food Smarts.

6 - Make time for yourself. Dont get stuck in a rut at work or home. Let go of the daily grind and give more time for yourself.

The best way to help yourself to look good on the outside is focusing on how you feel on the inside, he said. Focus on helping yourself by saying, I care about what it takes to help myself.

You think your job makes it difficult to stay fit?

For people who work in hospitality beverage directors, bar owners, bartenders, booze publicists, etc. the struggle to maintain a healthy lifestyle is exacerbated. Booze and temptation surround you day and night.

Staying healthy in the bar industry can definitely be tough, admits Gareth Evans, the Global Brand Ambassador for Absolut Elyx. [But] I think theres a misconception with people doing similar jobs to mine that we are always out partying and drinking.

Which is true. Ive been pleasantly surprised by the large number of people working with food or booze who are fit and able-bodied. Wanting to learn their secrets, I asked a few of em about their healthy routines.

Thankfully, their advice is applicable to any lifestyle. When you work in this industry, it is not always sensible to do dry January, says Gabriela Marchand, a publicist for KLG PR in New York. I know not to put unrealistic pressure on myself and instead focus on moderation and keeping with my daily fitness activities.

As Grant Gedemer, the food and beverage director at The Godfrey Hotel Chicago, notes: I think living healthy is less a matter of what you are around and more about discipline and self-control.

Its been a complete 180 for my lifestyle since I started the Bartender Boxing Bar Spar program. Ive stopped drinking beer, I dont drink the night before I have a work out. Im sleeping better, and I feel more energized throughout the day. On my off days, Im working out around the house doing push-ups, crunches, pull-ups and planks.
