Sure, it would be nice to lay on the couch and binge TV shows every day, and while that can be a great form of relaxation at times, excessive use can negatively impact overall health. By getting out of the house and at least taking a walk every day, mixed in with light jogging, and although you may be sore at first, youll notice an immediate extra jump in your step, mood, as well as your pants starting to fit a little looser.

With the resolutions pouring in with the new year, now can be the time to join a gym and start to live a healthy lifestyle during the cold winter months, and by summer you could be ready to ditch the monthly dues and enjoy the warm weather outdoors. In addition to physical activity, eating better, getting enough sleep, avoiding tobacco and excessive alcohol use, and regular checkups can have long and short-term health benefits by extending your life, but also paying lower premiums, which is a win-win.

Healthy living can be a trickle down when it comes to overall mood. First, the increased physical activity stimulates the endorphins which these brain chemicals can improve relaxation and happiness. Next, as your appearance starts to improve with losing weight and getting enough rest, suddenly your self-confidence and anxiety about your body can start to drastically change for the better. From there, you can find a productivity increase at work, not to mention better relationships as the feeling of isolation is removed. All just by improving to a new healthy lifestyle!

While there are plenty incentives to live a healthier lifestyle, did you know many insurers will offer discounted premiums to kick bad habits such as quitting smoking, limiting alcohol, or losing weight? Plant-based lifestyle: A ‘diet that fits all sizes’ – Northern Virginia Daily

WINCHESTER Those looking to get healthy this year might be tempted to consider a fad diet. But health professionals say its healthier and more practical to choose a healthy lifestyle instead.

Plant-based diets are becoming all the rage as more and more options for vegans make their way to area restaurants and grocery stores.

These are signs of a culture shift, said Donna Michel, a retired nephrologist in Winchester who also has a certificate in plant-based nutrition and is board certified in lifestyle medicine.

When we talk about plant-based diets for health, she said, the things that were mainly talking about are avoiding animal products, avoiding eating added oils and eating primarily whole plant foods.

The beauty of a low-fat, high fiber food plan, she said, is that participants dont have to count calories or portion out food. They can eat as much as they need to because its healthy and is packed with fiber.

You feel full, you feel satisfied, youre not looking for the next thing to eat, she said. You lose weight, and once you lose it, you maintain it. And I think thats what makes this sort of a diet successful, because its not technically a diet. What it is is a lifestyle change.

Why plant-based?

Vegans avoid animal products for various reasons, from ethical concerns to health concerns to personal preference, but advocates say that animal products also are not worth the cost.

Protein is readily available from plants, Dr. Neal Barnard recently told health professionals at a program at Winchester Medical Center.

Meat and dairy contain hormones and fat, he said, egg yolks raise blood cholesterol, and egg whites are simply a glob of animal protein.

Choosing plant-based foods over others comes down to avoiding missed opportunities to eat something healthier, Dr. Michael Greger writes at his website nutritionfacts.org, a nonprofit public service providing free updates on the latest in nutrition research.

[T]heres an additional opportunity cost to eating unhealthy foods beyond just how bad they themselves may be for our health, he writes.

In terms of weight loss, he said it matters how people get their calories (the energy content of food.)

A calorie is not necessarily a calorie, Greger says in a trailer for his new book How Not to Diet, posted at his site.

A hundred calories of chickpeas has a different impact than 100 calories of chicken or Chiclets based on their different ... factors such as absorption, appetite or our microbiome, he said. [E]ven the exact same foods eaten differently can have different effects. The context in which we eat matters too.

The terms vegan and plant-based are interchangeable, Michel said, but plant-based carries with it a connotation of being healthier than a vegan diet that simply eliminates meat, dairy and eggs.

A vegan diet can still be high in fat, sugar and other refined carbohydrates while being low in fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, beans and legumes.

Barnard and Michel also stressed that those who dont eat meat should take a Vitamin B-12 supplement.

Plant-based diets are successful for weight loss because people can eat a greater volume of food so they dont feel deprived, Michel said.

Youre replacing high-calorie density foods with large quantities of low-calorie density foods, she said. You can eat till youre full, and thats the whole thing.

She referenced the 2017 BROAD study, a randomized, controlled trial that used a whole food plant-based diet to address obesity, ischaemic (coronary) heart disease and diabetes. It was published in the journal Nutrition & Diabetes and is indexed online at ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28319109.

The study concluded that it led to significant improvements in BMI, cholesterol and other risk factors. To the best of our knowledge, this research has achieved greater weight loss at 6 and 12 months than any other trial that does not limit energy intake or mandate regular exercise.

Michel said trial participants lost an average of 19 pounds during the three-month study, but even after six-month and 12-month check-ins had maintained their weight loss.

Making the switch

Those starting a plant-based diet should know that non-meat and non-dairy options can be highly processed, greatly reducing their fiber and nutritional density while increasing sodium.

Unlike some other diets, though, the plant-based diet embraces nutrient-rich carbohydrates.

Carbs arent what people should be worried about, she said. Refined carbohydrates and refined starches are the problem.

Avoiding processed foods and oils isnt always easy, though, and Michel said she aims to keep those types of foods to 20 percent of her diet.

In general, she tries to avoid highly processed foods such as chips, flaked cereals and fake meat, instead choosing minimally processed foods like steel-cut oats and fresh tofu, or moderately processed foods like applesauce and rolled oats.

It does take a little bit of planning, she said. It doesnt have to be done expensively.

Beans and rice are inexpensive, she pointed out, and although certain fruits and vegetables (berries, celery and anything with a thin skin) are healthier if organic, she said its more important not to avoid eating produce.

I think part of the reason why plant-based diets are so foreign for people is its not the way we grew up, she said. Its not the way we learned how to eat. Its not what our food culture is in this country.

However, she said its a lifestyle anyone can do if they make the effort to learn about and prepare healthy foods.

Its the best diet for weight loss. Its the best diet for almost any condition, she said.

You have one diet that fits all sizes. I think thats the real beauty of it.

Cherry Rose Tan: Why she’s fighting for mental health in the tech industry – Inverse

Cherry Rose Tan is the founder and CEO of For Founders by Founders, which aims to remove mental health stigma in the tech industry and create healthier work environments. Shes also a founder herself and was an early investor in Paycase Financial, a crypto finance network.

In the following interview, Tan talks to Inverse about the unique mental health struggles entrepreneurs encounter, what it takes to create a safe space, and the healthy communities she wants to build in the tech world.

Hello! Can you please introduce yourself?

My name is Cherry Rose Tan. I currently lead a mental health movement, based in the tech industry, thats called For Founders, by Founders.

As somebody who is a serial entrepreneur and speaker, Im really passionate about bringing the mental health conversation to the tech world. I was previously a tech founder myself, and having gone through that experience, I know the entrepreneurial journey is kind of like a rollercoaster. There are a lot of high-highs, but there are also low-lows. So my commitment with For Founders, by Founders is to provide a safe space, especially for people in the tech world, to take off their masks and feel comfortable sharing their stories.

What does a safe space mean in the context of your work?

In the context of the work that I do, the way a safe space gets created can be dependent on the situation or the organization or conference Im working with. So, sometimes I might just be with the people I work with most tech CEOs and executives. We discuss what place they are at in their life; what they are experiencing as an entrepreneur, but also what they are experiencing as just a person. They could be feeling pretty raw or vulnerable. It has to be a safe space for them to feel comfortable just having an initial conversation with me to say, Hey, Id like to acknowledge a problem Im experiencing.

I would say a different level of impact is possible if people get to a place where they can say, Ok, now lets have a mental health conversation as a team or as a company. In the past two years, a lot of my work involved speaking on stage at conferences, like Collision. Its really exciting to bring mental health programming to these spaces and broaden the conversation.

You often speak to tech CEOs about their challenges. Would you say theres room for tech companies to make mental health a priority at all levels so everyone can receive support?

Honestly, 100 percent. People in the tech community know Founders as the company that is capturing very deep stories from prolific tech leaders. They are all CEOs. Once a person came to me and said, I get that youre working with CEOs, but what about everyone else in the tech industry?

And to be frank, if youre working in the startup world and I know, I came from crypto it can be cutthroat. People feel like they are always on the go. Youre trying to innovate, youre trying to build the best IP and all of your competitors are either working at the same pace or trying to go faster.

So, its my sincere hope that this movement will serve the entire industry. And I think its important that were starting where we are. These leaders are setting the tone for the rest of the industry. There are so many people counting on leaders to lead properly. If leaders arent thinking with clarity, or without a level of self-care, then problems emerge in organizations. If the director is burned out, then the managers become burned out, and then the employees.

That trickles down to the next generation who come into the workforce and feel the pressure of well, Im going to have to sacrifice my personal life to make this work. The passion and the commitment of this movement is really about taking a stand, and frankly bringing a sense of humanity back into tech culture. Yes, were competitive. Yes, were innovative. But we also have to take care of our people.

We started off with tech CEOs because we believe that if there is a buy-in at the highest level. Theres a greater chance of implementing permanent change and were really about playing the long game.

What are some of the mental health challenges tech CEOs and founders encounter?

One of the most frequent topics that comes up is loneliness. I think, oftentimes, theres this illusion that tech life is always glamorous. But even if youre raising $20 million in investments, that doesnt mean youre not experiencing personal struggles.

Ill often get cold emails from people that essentially say, I read the stories on your website, and where I live, I dont have anybody to talk to in my circle about whats really going on with me. And if youre in a public position where there is this perception youve got it all, and you want to project the image that youre strong and successful, it can lead to this feeling of isolation and loneliness.

What advice do you give to people who feel stress or loneliness but feel they cant reveal that to others?

I know this word has gotten trendy, but honestly, I think one of the best things a person can do is engage in self-care. Its something I can speak to personally. When I first started as an entrepreneur, I felt a lot of pressure to do the hustle and grind. I always pushed myself harder and ended up, unfortunately, working somewhere between 80 and 100 hours a week.

I did that for years. Then one day, I woke up and came to a point where, mentally and physically, I was completely burned out. It wasnt a reflection of my ability I know that I am a high performer but I just never thought self-care was something for me. I thought it was something other people needed. I had too much pride.

And I was proud of the amazing things my team was doing, but I could see the impact on my body. I was having trouble sleeping, I couldnt relax; I couldnt stop thinking about work. I wasnt present with my friends and family. It really took a toll on my life.

The ironic thing is and I didnt learn this until I went through it myself a lot of people go into tech entrepreneurship because of the freedom of lifestyle. They hope that if they work hard enough, they can make enough money to have the lifestyle they want. And ironically, when you burn out, you miss out on what you wanted first of all having a healthy lifestyle.

I really advise people to take the steps to take care of themselves, and then they can start taking care of other people. Its important to slow down and check-in with yourself. Maybe youre not finding the solution youre looking for because youre tired and just need to focus on solutions like exercising, eating, and sleeping well.

In today's world, though we are dependent on drug therapy, food still remains an integral part of our healthy living. With the evolution of time, there has been inclusion of several trends of food habits and new food categories, with one of the recent ones being functional foods. As per a 2002 report in The Journal of Nutrition, all foods are functional to some extent because all foods provide taste, aroma and nutritive value. Functional foods can be considered to be those whole, fortified, enriched or enhanced foods that provide health benefits beyond the provision of essential nutrients, when they are consumed at efficacious levels as part of a varied diet on a regular basis.

However, functional foods have no universally accepted definition. As per The Journal of Nutrition report, the concept was first developed in Japan in 1980s when the Ministry of Health and Welfare, after facing an escalation in health care costs, initiated a regulatory system to approve certain foods with documented health benefits in hopes of improving the health of the nation's aging population. These foods, which are eligible to bear a special seal, are now recognized as Foods for Specified Health Use (FOSHU). As of July 2002, nearly 300 food products had been granted FOSHU status in Japan.

Functional foods might be capable of providing health benefits, but they should not be seen as an alternative to a balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle. Some functional foods are generated around a certain functional ingredient, for example, foods containing probiotics, prebiotics et al. Other functional foods or drinks can be foods fortified with a nutrient that would not usually be present to any great extent.

Fishes like sardines and salmons have high amount of omega-3 fatty acids, which may help in keeping thyroid under control, lower risk of heart disease and improve infant health when consumed by women during pregnancy or while breast-feeding.

Rich in organosulfur compounds, garlic helps in keeping a check on cholesterol, lowering the risk of cardiovascular disease, effects of hypolipidemic, antithrombotic, anti-diabetic, and anti-hyperhomo cysteinemia and, antioxidant, antimicrobial, immunomodulatory, antiasthmatic, antimutagenic, and prebiotic activities.

Green tea possesses significant antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antihypertensive, thermogenic properties. According to a study in The Journal of Nutrition, the catechin content in green tea helps in reducing risk of certain types of cancer. It may also contribute in reducing risk of cardiovascular disease and promote oral health.

Fermented dairy products such as yogurt, cheese, buttermilk etc. are rich in probiotics. They help in boosting overall immunity. The health benefits also include prevention of gastrointestinal infections, reduction of serum cholesterol levels and antimutagenic activity.

Rich in protein content, soy helps in reducing cholesterol. The protein content of soybean has rich amino acids with a good balance. The quality of soybean protein is comparable to that of animal protein sources. A study published in Midle-East Journal of Scientific Research stated that regular consumption of soy products reduces one's risk for chronic diseases such as cancer, heart disease and stroke.

One should always remember, choose the ingredients wisely if you want to try functional food; and remember, it might promote wellness, but cannot make up for poor eating habits.

No country can prepare to welcome tens of millions of foreign tourists for the Olympics, without including vegetarian and vegan options into the catering.

Even though Japan hopes to welcome around 40 million foreign tourists this year (expected to spend more than 65 billion), many of them being vegan or vegetarian, the country is not well prepared yet for the task.

"Compared to the strategy of catering halal products, there are not enough preparations for vegetarians so we need to develop our strategy for public education," says Jin Matsubara, a member of the House of Representatives and former Minister of State for Consumer Affairs and Food Safety.

Even though medieval Japan was practically vegetarian, the country today is known for its love for meat, partially thanks to Western influence. Japanese today eat nearly 20% more meat per person than they did just two decades ago.

An off-shoot of the infamous How to Make (Almost) Anything course at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, How to Grow (Almost) Anything tackles the core concepts behind designing with biology prototyping biomolecules, engineering biological computers, and 3D printing biomaterials. The material touches elements of synthetic biology, ethics of biotechnology, protein design, microfluidic fabrication, microbiome sequencing, CRISPR, and gene cloning.

In a similar fashion to the original HTMAA course, HTGAA works by introducing a new concept each week that builds up to a final project. Students learn about designing DNA experiments, using synthesized oligonucleotide primers to amplify a PCR product, testing the impact of genes on the production of lycopene in E coli., protein analysis and folding, isolating a microbiome colony from human skin and confining bacteria to image, printing 3D structures that contain living engineered bacteria, and using expansion microscopy (ExM) to visualize a mouse brain slice. The final projects run the gamut from creating a biocomputer in a cream to isolating yeast from bees.

Growing out from an initiative to create large communities around biotechnology research, the course requires minimal prior exposure to biology. By working directly with hands-on applications to biodesign concepts, students are able to direct apply their knowledge of theoretical biology concepts to real-world applications, making it an ideal springboard for bio-inspired DIY projects. U of T’s Peter Wittek, who will be remembered at Feb. 3 event, on why the future is quantum – News@UofT

In September of 2019, Peter Wittek, an assistant professor at the University of Toronto, went missing during a mountaineering expedition in the Himalayas after reportedly being caught in an avalanche. A search and rescue mission was launched but the conditions were very difficult and Wittek was not found.

Peters loss is keenly felt, said Professor Ken Corts, acting dean of the Rotman School of Management. He was the Founding Academic Director of the CDL Quantum Stream, a valued instructor in the MMA program, data scientist in residence with the TD Management Data and Analytics Lab, an exceptional contributor to Rotman and U of T and a wonderful colleague.

A ceremony to remember Wittek will take place on Feb. 3 from 3 to 4:30 pm in Desautels Hall at the Rotman School of Management.

Quantum computing and quantum machine learning an emerging field that counted Wittek as one of its few experts was the topic of his final interview inRotman Management Magazine. It is reprinted below:

You oversee the Creative Destruction Labs Quantum stream, which seeks entrepreneurs pursuing commercial opportunities at the intersection of quantum computing and machine learning. What do those opportunities look like?

Weve been running this stream for three years now, and we were definitely the first to do this in an organized way. However, the focus has shifted slightly. We are now interested in looking at any application of quantum computing.

These are still very early days for quantum computing. To give you a sense of where we are at, some people say its like the state of digital computing in the 1950s, but Id say its more like the 1930s. We dont even agree yet on what the architecture should look likeand, as a result, we are very limited with respect to the kind of applications we can build.

As a result, focusing on quantum is still quite risky. Nevertheless, so far we have had 45 companies complete our program. Not all of them survived, but a good dozen of them have raised funding. If you look at the general survival rate for AI start-ups, our record is roughly the same and given how new this technology is, that is pretty amazing.

What are the successful start-ups doing? Can you give an example of the type of problems theyre looking to solve?

At the moment I would say the main application areas are logistics and supply chain. Another promising area is life sciences, where all sorts of things can be optimized with this technology. For instance, one of our companies,Protein-Qure, is folding proteins with quantum computers.

Finance is another attractive area for these applications. In the last cohort we had a company that figured out a small niche problem where they had both the data and the expertise to provide something new and innovative; they are in the process of raising money right now. The other area where quantum makes a lot of sense is in material discovery. The reason we ever even thought of building these computers was to understand quantum materials, back in the 1980s. Today, one of our companies is figuring out how to discover new materials using quantum processing units instead of traditional supercomputers.

We have a company calledAgnostic, which is doing encryption and obfuscation for quantum computers. Right nowIBM,Rigetti ComputingandD-Wave Systemsare building quantum computers for individual users. They have access to everything that you do on the computer and can see all the data that youre sending. But if youre building a commercial application, obviously you will want tohide that. Agnostic addresses this problem by obfuscating the code you are running. One application weve seen in the life sciences is a company calledEigenMed, which addresses primary care. They provide novel machine learning algorithms for primary care by using quantum-enhanced sampling algorithms.

We also seed companies that dont end up using quantum computing. They might try out a bunch of things and discover that it doesnt work for the application they have in mind, and they end up being 100 per cent classical.StratumAIis an example of this. It uses machine learning to map out the distribution of ore bodies under the ground. The mining industry is completely underserved by technology, and this company figured out thatto beat the state-of-the-art by a significant margin, it didnt even need quantum. They just used classical machine learning and they already have million dollar contracts.

Which industries will be most affected by this technology?

Life sciences will be huge because, as indicated, it often has complex networks and probability distributions, and these are very difficult to analyze with classical computers. The way quantum computers work, this seems to be a very good fit, so that is where I expect the first killer app to come from. One company,Entropica Labs, is looking at various interactions of several genomes to identify how the combined effects cause certain types of disease. This is exactly the sort of problem that is a great fit for a quantum computer.

You touched on quantum applications in primary care. If I walked into a doctors office, how would that affect me?

Its trickybecause, like mining, primary care is vastly underserved by technology. So, if you were to use any machine learning, you would only do better. But EigenMed was actually founded by an MD. He realized that there are certain machine learning methods that we dont use simply because their computational requirements are too high but that they happen to be a very good fit for primary care, because the questions you can ask the computer are similar to what a GP would ask.

For instance, if a patient walks in with a bunch of symptoms, you can ask, What is the most likely disease? and What are the most likely other symptoms that I should verify to make sure it is what I suspect? These are the kinds of probabilistic questions that are hard to ask on current neural network architectures, but they are exactly the kind of questions that probabilistic graphical models handle well.

Are physicians and other health-care providers open to embracing this technology, or do they feel threatened by it?

First of all, health care is a heavily regulated market, so you need approval for everything. Thats not always easy to getand, as a result, it can be very difficult to obtain data. This is the same problem that any machine learning company faces. Fine, they have this excellent piece of technology and theyve mastered it,but if you dont have any good data, you dont have a company. I see that as the biggest obstacle to machine learning-based progress in health care and life sciences.

You have said that QML has the potential to bring about the next wave of technology shock. Any predictions as to what that might look like?

I think its going to be similar to what happened with deep learning. The academic breakthrough happened about nine years ago, but it took a long time to get into the public discussion. This is currently happening with AI which, at its core, is actually just very simple pattern recognition. Its almost embarrassing how simplistic AI is and yet it is already changing entire industries.

Quantum is next not just quantum machine learning but quantum computing in general. Breakthroughs are happening every day, both on the hardware side and in the kind of algorithms you can build with quantum computers. But its going to take another 10 years until it gets into public discussions and starts to disrupt industries. The companies we are seeding today are going to be the ones that eventually disrupt industries.

Alibaba is one of the companies at the forefront of embracing quantum, having already committed $15 billion to it. What is Alibaba after?

First of all, I want to say a huge thank you toAlibaba becausethe moment it made that commitment, everyone woke up and said, Hey, look: the Chinese are getting into quantum computing! Almost immediately, the U.S. government allocated $1.3 billion to invest in and develop quantum computers, and a new initiative is also coming together in Canada.

The worlds oldest commercial quantum computing company is actually from Canada:D-Wave Systemsstarted in 1999 in British Columbia. Over its 20-year history, it managed to raise over $200 million. Then Alibaba came along and announced it was committing $15 billion to quantumand this completely changed the mindset. People suddenly recognized that theres a lot of potential in this area.

What does Alibaba want from quantum? You could ask the same question ofGoogle, which is also building a quantum computer. For them, its because they want to make their search and advertisement placement even better than it already is. Eventually, this will be integrated into their core business. I think Alibaba is looking to do something similar. As indicated, one of the main application areas for quantum is logistics and supply chain. Alibaba has a lot more traffic thanAmazon. Its orders are smaller, but the volume of goods going through its warehouses is actually much larger. Any kind of improved optimization it can achieve will translate into millions of dollars in savings. My bet is that Alibabas use of quantum will be applied to something that is critical to its core operation.

The mission of CDLs Quantum stream is that, by 2022, it will have produced more revenue-generating quantum software companies than the rest of the world combined. What is the biggest challenge you face in making that a reality?

People are really waking up to all of this. There is already a venture capital firm that focuses exclusively on quantum technologies. So, the competition is steep, but we are definitely leading in terms of the number of companies created. In Canada, the investment community is a bit slow to put money into these ventures. But every year we are recruiting better and better people and the cohorts are more and more focused and, as a result, I think we are going to see more and more success stories.

It seems like everyone is interested in quantum andthey are thinking about investing in it, but they are all waiting for somebody else to make the first move. Im waiting for that barrier to break and, in the meantime, we are making progress.Xanadujust raised $32 million in Series A financing, which indicates that it has shown progress in building its business model and demonstrated the potential to grow and generate revenue. ProteinQure raised a seed of around $4 million dollars. And another company,BlackBrane, raised $2 million. So, already, there are some very decent financing rounds happening around quantum. It will take lots of hard work, but I believe we will reach our goal.

Colorado a healthy state overall, some counties more than others. And its not just the poorer areas with serious health concerns. – The Denver Post

Colorado has one of the healthiest populations in the nation, but that doesnt mean some resolutions arent in order for 2020, assuming they havent been already attempted and cast aside.

Residents of Logan, Morgan, and Prowers counties may want to consider watching what they eat and shedding a few pounds. Make that a lot of pounds. Residents of Bent, Saguache and Adams counties need to get better at keeping something else out of their mouths cigarettes.

And residents of Denver, Boulder and pretty much all the ski-resort counties, please do your livers a favor in 2020 and cut back on the binge drinking.

SmartAsset, a personal finance firm, looked at those three behaviors, along with rates of health insurance coverage, longevity and access to a physician to come up with an overall health score that was used to rank 48 of Colorados 64 counties. There wasnt sufficient data in the 16 counties excluded.

Our study identified the healthiest counties in Colorado by considering length of life, health behaviors and healthcare access, said AJ Smith, vice president of financial education at SmartAsset.

A goal of the SmartAsset study was to help consumers understand how certain behaviors might impact life insurance premiums in different areas, Smith said. But the study offers a trove of public health information, including a comparison of lifespans.

Douglas County ranked as the healthiest county in the state, followed by Boulder, Pitkin, Broomfield and Eagle counties. Get outside of the ski resort areas, however, and rural residents in Colorado tend to have lower health scores and shorter lifespans.

Rural doesnt always mean healthier, which may surprise some Front Range city dwellers who aspire to trade the stress of congested roads and demanding workloads for clean air and open vistas.

In Douglas County, which had the highest health score in Colorado, about 3,494 years of life are lost before age 75 per 100,000 residents. Only Pitkin, Summit and Eagle counties show fewer hours of life lost prematurely, in the low 3,000 range.

At the other extreme, Huerfano County residents lost 13,227 years of life prematurely or nearly four times as many as in Douglas. Las Animas County residents lost 12,439 years of life to premature deaths and in Conejos, it is 10,271 years of life lost.

Granted, not everybody gets to live to age 75. But why should someone living in Walsenburg or Trinidad face higher odds of early death than someone in Highlands Ranch or Aspen?

It is totally tragic, said Emily Johnson, director of policy analysis at the Colorado Health Institute.

There is an old saying that people spend their health to accumulate wealth, and then spend their wealth to recover their health. But the reality is that having more wealth allows someone to maintain better health.

What Douglas and the ski resort counties share in common are higher median household incomes, while the counties with the lowest health scores have some of the lowest household incomes in the state. That leads some to conclude that improving health is an economic development question, not just a behavioral one.

There is a lot there that is pushing you to poor health when you are lower-income, Johnson said. It ranges from the stress of making the rent to whether a person feels safe going for a jog in their neighborhood.

Higher-income households have better access to resources that promote and maintain health and more options for off-loading stress, she said. And they are more likely to have jobs that come with health insurance.

Douglas County has the lowest uninsured rate in the state at 3.7%, while Broomfield, Gilpin, Clear Creek and Jefferson counties all had uninsured rates below 7%. El Paso, Boulder, and Larimer counties, the larger population centers outside metro Denver, had uninsured rates just above 7%.

At the other extreme, 17.5% of residents in Saguache County lack health insurance coverage, and 15.3% of Garfield County residents arent covered. A lack of coverage can cause people to delay visits, allowing chronic conditions to go untreated.

And a lack of health insurance coverage doesnt necessarily motivate people to take fewer risks with their health, even though the consequences for them are more severe if they dont stay healthy.

If we were purposely logical creatures, we would never smoke or drink, Johnson said.

As executive director of the Tri-County Health Department, which covers Douglas, Arapahoe and Adams counties, John Douglas has a front-row seat on how economic differences play out in public health outcomes.

Douglas has Colorados highest health score and the nations sixth-highest, a top ranking other studies have confirmed. It also has Colorados highest median household income at $115,314. Arapahoe ranks 14th in Colorado and 110th nationally on its health score. It holds the 10th spot in Colorado for household income at $73,925. Adams ranks 36th on its health score locally and 722nd nationally. It has the 17th spot in Colorado on household income at $67,575.

Heres just one example in how county wealth plays out in creating different options to improve health.

Douglas County has 3.7 times the concentration of fitness and recreational sports workers than the country as a whole does, so many it ranks fifth in the U.S., according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Arapahoe County has 1.85 times the concentration, not as heavy as Douglas, but nearly double the U.S. average. Adams County, by contrast, matches the national average. And Lake and Montrose counties they have about as half as many fitness workers as would be expected.

When SoulCycle, the trendy indoor cycling chain out of New York, opened its first Colorado location, it didnt pick Aurora or Thornton. It set up shop in Cherry Creek, Denvers ritziest retail district.

People who do well in life have the resources to better educate themselves about staying healthy, and they likely have a stronger motivation to do so, said Douglas. But the equation is a complex one, with a lot of variables.

A 2007 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine linked about 40% of health outcomes to personal behaviors, such as putting on too many pounds, smoking and substance abuse, said Gabriel Kaplan, chief of the health promotion and chronic disease prevention branch at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

Genetics, including traits that leave some at a higher risk of cancer or heart disease, explains about 30% of health outcomes. Social conditions such as economic opportunities and educational attainment account for about 15% of the equation. Health care access, something public health officials have focused heavily on, only contributes about 10%, while environmental conditions, such as pollution, contribute about 5% of the mix.

But it is important to note social conditions tie into personal behaviors. Someone born in a town where teenagers smoke at an early age or drink heavily is likely to pick up life-shortening habits and addictions. Likewise, a worker in an area with poor job prospects or a farmer dealing with wild swings in crop prices may try to cope with stress in unhealthy ways.

If the only store where you can get produce is a convenience store, you are not as likely to have a diet with fruits and vegetables, Kaplan said. We need to make sure communities are set up to promote health. It is not just a matter of individual choice.

Alcohol consumption is one behavior where higher incomes dont correlate with healthier behaviors. Some of the most well-off counties in Colorado have the highest rates of self-reported excessive drinking.

We have been talking about this in public health circles, Douglas said. It is an underappreciated and ignored health issue.

Excessive drinking involves drinking heavily in a short period of time with the express goal of becoming intoxicated. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism defines it as five or more drinks in a two-hou
r period for men and four or more drinks for women.

Deaths in the U.S. from binge drinking have more than doubled the past two decades, with the sharpest increases for women and the middle-aged, according to the Center for Health Progress. That statistic that sheds a whole different light on the mommy drinking culture.

Boulder County, despite its reputation as a health mecca, had the second-highest rate of excessive drinking in Colorado at 23.6%, according to SmartAsset. The University of Colorado Boulder, which regularly appears on rankings of the nations top party schools, might drive that number up, but students alone arent to blame for Boulders lack of sobriety.

Only Denver County, with its abundant bars and craft brewers and millennials who frequent them, had a higher rate of people who engage in excessive drinking at 25.7%.

Denver has a drinking problem, Douglas said. Good luck, however, getting Denver or Boulder to admit they have a drinking problem.

Outside those two, the next five counties with the highest rates of excessive drinking are all ski resort counties. Drinking after a day on the slopes might be a tradition for many, but it appears the locals keep the party going even when the tourists are gone.

Huerfano County, which ranked 47th out of 48 on its health score, had an excessive drinking rate of 15%, a full 10 percentage points lower than Denver and the second-lowest in the state. It tied with Otero and only trailed Saguache. All three counties are among the poorest in Colorado.

Every five years, the 53 public health agencies in the state are tasked with putting together a community health assessment which they use to identify the top priorities for the following five years, said Theresa Anselmo, executive director of the Colorado Association of Local Public Health Officials.

Anselmo urged those who look at health statistics and rankings not to play the blame game and realize that for many people, achieving better health requires more than a resolve to do better.

Maybe a community cant attract a physician no matter how hard it tries and the national grocery chains wont come anywhere near. That leaves residents with fewer options to eat healthy and fewer resources for one-on-one counseling about weight management.

Rural areas tend to have older populations, who are more prone to health problems, Anselmo notes.

And self-selection plays a part. Colorados reputation draws in those looking for a healthy lifestyle, but they tend to settle along the Front Range. And even within the state, people who can afford to do so move into healthier communities.

Folks that have more means end up living in healthier places, said Douglas. You dont have to live near the Suncor refinery. You can live in Castle Rock.

While Colorado may do better than other states on physical health measures, mental health remains a challenge, which is reflected in higher rates of suicide and substance abuse, Kaplan said.

Stress is often a driver behind behaviors like smoking, binge drinking, substance abuse and overeating, and the state is focused on providing people with coping skills to deal with stress.

Behavior is not just a matter of choice for people. We look at strategies that make it easier for people to make healthy choices, said Kaplan.

For example, the state has invested heavily in the Colorado QuitLine, which helps those who are trying to kick the nicotine habit through coaching and medications. In 2004, 23% of state residents smoked tobacco. Thanks to higher tobacco taxes, indoor smoking bans and more resources dedicated to quitting, that figure is below 15%.

That reduction is part of a larger national trend resulting in a big decline in lung cancer deaths.

For us, it is all about trying to help everyone in the state to have the chance to have a healthy life, to have a long and fruitful life, Kaplan said.

5 Healthy Habits In Middle Age Could Help You Live 10 Years Longer, Harvard Study Finds – CBS Boston

(CBS Local) Healthy habits such as exercising for at least 30 minutes a day or drinking in moderation can help you stave off diseases for an extra decade, according to new research.

The study, published last week in the British Medical Journal, found that those who led a healthy lifestyle are more likely to be free of illnesses such as cardiovascular disease, cancer and type 2 diabetes.

A healthy lifestyle was defined by those with at least four of the following five factors:

Based on data from about 110,000 people, researchers from The Harvard T.H Chan School of Public Health then determined how long people could live free of cardiovascular disease, cancer and diabetes from the age of 50.

We observed that adherence to a low-risk lifestyle was associated with a longer life expectancy at age 50 free of major chronic diseases of approximately 7.6 years in men and 10 years in women compared with participants with no low-risk lifestyle factors, the researchers concluded.

On average, the results showed that women leading a healthy lifestyle could enjoy 34.4 years free from those diseases, compared to 23.7 years for women who had none of the five healthy lifestyle behaviors.

Men who adopted at least four of the five healthy living factors could expect a further 31.1 years free from disease, in contrast to just 23.5 years for men who did not follow any of the healthy lifestyle factors.

Given the high cost of chronic disease treatment, public policies to promote a healthy lifestyle by improving food and physical environments would help to reduce health care costs and improve quality of life, said senior author Frank Hu, Fredrick J. Stare Professor of Nutrition and Epidemiology and chair, Department of Nutrition.

Alzheimer’s Association to host healthy living session | Free – Sedalia Democrat

Taking care of your mind and body is important as you get older, but making a plan for healthy aging is not something that is easy for everyone.

The Alzheimer's Association Greater Missouri Chapter will host Healthy Living for Your Mind and Body from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15 at Cedarhurst Senior Living, 3701 W. 10th St. in Sedalia. The session will include tips on the latest research on how to maintain an active and healthy lifestyle to age healthily.

There is a lot of really recent lifestyle research thats come out that has shown that when you do certain activities in succession it can be the blueprint for aging well, said Jeremy Koerber, Education Program Manager for the Alzheimer's Association Greater Missouri Chapter. So if you want to stay independent, you want to be able to do things that you've always loved to do and also potentially prevent heart disease, diabetes, etc., hey these are the things that you need to be doing.

According to Koerber, the components include diet and nutrition, exercise, cognitive activity, social engagement, cognitive exercise, and adequate sleep.

What research has shown is that you will do four of these six components, you can reduce your risk for Alzheimers by as much as 59% and thats a big number, Koerber said. Its almost like looking at it from an insurance perspective. Were not saying that you can flat out prevent it.

The workshop is designed to provide participants with hands-on tools to help them incorporate recommendations into a plan for healthy aging. Koerber said attendees will receive a workbook that can be used to determine action items, list goals and identify barriers as they move through the program.

They should be able to walk out of there with really good overall strategies and tactics. Actual implementation items that they can use, Koerber said. Such as we all know that its important to eat healthy. We all know that but how do you actually get to do those things? A lot of times people kind of freeze with the action because its too much for them. So were kind of breaking this down to make it not just simple but give them takeaway action items that they could implement today if they wanted to.

Koerber explained even implementing a few of the tools can help improve a persons body and brain health.

What were trying to do is by being proactive and learning about these six action items, Koerber said. You may not be a big exercise person, thats alright. Do you do sudoku puzzles? You may not be someone that really wants to go run 3 miles but could you improve your nutrition? Could you get better sleep?

The workshop can also help motivate people to improve their lifestyles. Koerber said sometimes people just need to figure out their why.

Why would I do this? Why should I develop a program? Why should I stick to this? he said.

This particular program, I think, is one that can provide a lot of motivation and it provides hope, he continued. Alzheimers and dementia can be scary but there are a lot of scary things out there...What we want to do is reduce the stigma. We want to open a conversation. Naturally, with this topic were trying to work on the prevention side of it but we also want to make sure that theres awareness raised that there are a lot of resources available to people in our communities free of charge.

The workshop is for all ages and Koerber said it is never too late to start. He explained the risk for Alzheimers and dementia increases after age 65 and then substantially at 85. Koerber said he has seen the methods work to help individuals age healthily.

The people that I saw, it was no mistake that they were in their 80s and still actively doing things outside that some people in their 40s and 50s couldn't do, Koerber said. Thats not a mistake. Every now and then you'll run into someone that just has fantastic genes, but if you really dig down into it and look at what theyre doing you would find some of these key categories that were talking about as far as the lifestyle research.

7 rules to reduce your risk of Alzheimer’s and keep your brain healthy – MarketWatch

During the last Alzheimers disease support meeting I attended at my mothers assisted living center, I sheepishly asked if anyone else was worried about their own risk for the disease.

A lot of hands went up.

At age 65, your risk of being diagnosed with Alzheimers is 2% a year. If you have a parent with Alzheimers disease, thatrisk goes up by 30%, to 2.6% a year, according to the Harvard Mens Health Watch.

However, thats still a relatively small increase. A recent Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report found92% of us fear developing a degenerative brain diseaselike dementia or Alzheimers and 28% arent sure we can do anything about it.

Everyone, as they age, faces changes in brain function just like any other part of the body, our brains age, says Dr. Marc Agronin, senior vice president of Behavioral Health and chief medical officer for the MIND Institute at Miami Jewish Health and author of The Dementia Caregiver: A Guide to Caring for Someone with Alzheimers Disease and Other Neurocognitive Disorders.

We know living a healthy lifestyle is key to preventing chronic illness and conditions like diabetes and heart disease. But now, research finds that living a brain-healthy lifestyle may reduce your risk for Alzheimers disease, dementia and other cognitive decline.

The research on cognitive health and disease has homed in on seven pillars for living a brain-healthy lifestyle, which may in combination, slash your risk for brain-degenerative diseases.

Just keep in mind, however, that even if you performed all these pillars perfectly, it doesnt mean you wont get Alzheimers disease. Other factors, such as genetics, additional medical conditions that affect the brain and accidents, cant always be controlled.

The mind-blowing research on exercise alone should get you moving.

A 44-year Swedish study that separated midlife women exercisers into low, moderate and high fitness levels found that women at the lowest fitness level were45% less likely to develop dementia, while women in the top fitness level were 88% less likely.

It seems exercise reduces chronic inflammation and increases the release of a protein thats good for brain cells. Plus, it improves your overall health, so youre reducing cardiovascular dysfunction, your risk for diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol, which are all bad for your brain, explains Dr. Yuko Hara, who leads the Aging and Alzheimers Prevention team at theAlzheimers Drug Discovery Foundation.

Researchers recommend 30 minutes of moderate exercise walking, riding a stationary bicycle or whatever you love to do so youll stick with it three to five times a week to gain the benefit.

The only diet that really has robust evidence showing risk reduction for dementia is whats called the MIND diet, Agronin says. It is a combination of theMediterranean dietand whats called theDASH diet, which is a low salt, healthy diet (MIND stands for Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay).

The MIND diet includes loads of fruits and vegetables, fish, legumes, poultry, olive oil and one glass of wine (if you drink alcohol), while reducing processed foods, sugar, whole-fat dairy and red meat.

A healthy dietproduces more brain tissue volume, more gray matter, a larger hippocampus (which controls memory) and lessens your risk of developing dementia, according to a study published in 2018 and conducted by researchers at the Erasmus University Medical Center in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

We may not know all the mechanisms of why a healthy diet is protective for brain health, Hara says. But the MIND diet is filled with antioxidants and polyphenols from fruits and veggies, anti-inflammatory properties like omega 3 fatty acids from fish, and reduces your risk for Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol all associated with dementia.

Learning builds cognitive reserves, which is thecapacity of your brain to function optimallydespite the changes that occur as we age. Learning also helps the brain resist cognitive decline.

Research suggests mid- and late-life cognitive activity, especially, is linked to delayed onset of cognitive decline, Hara says. Lifelong learning is fundamental to improved brain health, higher levels of cognitive activity and staving off Alzheimers disease and dementia.

So, sign up. Pick anything that interests you. Learn an instrument, take up a language or join some kind of class. If youre working, try to learn something new every week on the job. Read, take an online course, teach yourself the Latin names for the plants in your garden or anything else you want to know. Then, keep learning.

Scientists have found people with few social contacts and who feel lonely or isolated have a26% increase in dementia and mild cognitive decline. Some studies also suggest lonely people have higher amyloid and tau in the brain, biological telltale markers for Alzheimers disease. The connection between loneliness and dementia is still unclear, but it may have to do with depression or lack of stimulation.

If you are geographically apart from family, have lost a spouse or tend to isolate with fewer social contacts as you age,step up your social game. Phone or video-message with faraway family and friends regularly or participate in groups like walking and museumgoers. Establish or maintain strong connections with a neighbor, friend or childhood bestie. Talk, visit and interact with others. Your brain depends on it.

Poor sleep is also connected to Alzheimers disease and an increase in the presence of amyloid and tau. However, we dont really know if poor sleep causes Alzheimers disease or Alzheimers disease causes poor sleep, Hara says.

Despite this chicken-or-egg riddle, experts recommend seven to eight hours of sleep a night.Practice good sleep hygiene,like avoiding caffeine and alcohol before bed. If you have a sleep disorder such as sleep apnea or insomnia, talk to your doctor and get it treated. Disorders like sleep apnea deprive the brain of oxygen during sleep, which impairs its function over time.

Dont just resort to taking sleeping pills, since they also have beenassociated with dementia, Agronin says.

High levels of stress are linked tomemory problems and smaller brain volume. Whats more, the hormone cortisol, produced when youre stressed out, may damage cells needed for learning and memory, Agronin says.

When youre under stress, you need to learn ways to cope. Practice whatever works best for you, which could be: yoga, meditation, taking a walk, playing with a pet, listening to music, knitting, reading a novel, tinkering in the garage or anything else you find enjoyable and relaxing.

The illnesses most related to brain health include Type 2 diabetes and hypertension. For example, people with diabetes have a twofold higher risk of developing a type of dementia called vascular dementia, and a 73% increase risk of any dementia, including Alzheimers disease, Hara says.

Depression is another risk factor for dementia and Alzheimers disease.

Taking care of your overall medical andmental healthplays a critical role in living a brain-healthy lifestyle. You should see your doctor regularly, get annual screenings and manage any chronic illnesses you have.

Agronin also recommends keeping a positive attitude toward aging and fostering a strong sense of purpose. Volunteering, focusing on relationships and having an interest in civic, religious or spiritual associations can have a powerful impact on living a brain-healthy lifestyle.

Keto diet isnt the answer for weight loss, experts say. Heres what is – USA TODAY

The keto diet. You've probably heard of it by now.

It's the low-carb, high-fat diet that caught on and spread quickly, leading some to label it as a fad, while others praised its effectiveness.

The new year brings in anannual flood of personalhealth goals, and for those trying to lose weight, the keto diet might have come into consideration. Is it effective? More importantly, is ithealthy?

Before making any commitments to keto, it's important to understand what you're getting yourself into.In addition to whatthe health professionals below have to say about keto, it's important to consult your doctor before embarking on any high-fat diets.

Red meat: healthy or not?Controversial study urging people to eat red meat followed by correction

Though there are slightly different versions of the ketogenic diet, it's primarily based on a low intake of carbohydrates coupled with a high intake of fat and protein.

Generally, this means people on the diet get70% to 80% of their daily calories from fat, about 20%from protein and about 5%from carbs.

The decreased intake of carbs forces the body into the state of ketosis,in which fat becomes the main provider of fuel for the body.

Though similar, keto is not the same as the Paleo and Atkins diets, which also feature low-carb routines.

The diet has been associated with effective weight loss, but it doesn't necessarily get the approval from doctors.

"I wouldn't recommend the keto diet to anybody," Jeffrey Mechanick, medical director at Mount Sinai Heart's Marie-Jose and Henry R. Kravis Center for ClinicalCardiovascular Health,told USA TODAY.

When it comes to dissecting popular diets such as keto, doctors stress the importanceof knowing the difference between weight loss and genuine overall health.

Reducing your intake of carbs, as the keto diet does, goes hand-in-hand with reducing intake of whole grains, fruits and some vegetables, which raises red flags for health professionals.

"That's where Iget a little concerned about the keto diet," Vasanti Malik, adjunct assistant professor of Nutrition at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, told USA TODAY.

"You want to be mindful, because these foods whole grains, fruits and vegetables carry a number of beneficial nutrients vitamins, polyphenols, fiber that have been shown time and time again to be beneficial for cardiometabolic health."

Fitness shaming: It's keeping people from working out

As the keto diet essentially nixes the body's intake of carbs, the bodysearches for an alternative source of fuel. Before long, the body breaksdown fat,muscle and tissues to sustain itself, Mechanick said.

"In theory, the keto diet basically mimics starvation," Mechanick said."If you don't eat carbohydrates but you eat an excessive amount of fat and protein, you're still going to waste tissue. Tissue is still going to burn off."

Yes, you might experience weight loss on the keto diet,but that might not actually be good for you, considering what you giveup.

"I don't feel particularly comfortable telling people to reduce intake of things that we know offer benefits for health," Malik said.

Diet-driven peoplemight find this part hard to digest.

Doctors are moving away from what we traditionally think of as a "diet," one with specific restrictions or calorie goals. Instead, theypromotea healthier overall lifestyle.

"The vernacular is changing," Mechanick said. "We try not to even use the word 'diet.' We try to use the phrase 'eating pattern.'"

There's a "rebound" issue with many fad diets such as keto, Malik said. You go on the diet, lose weight, but what happens after that? Most people struggle to stick with it.

"Without a realistic lifestyle change, the individual is going to regain the weight," she said.

The answer might not be a traditional "diet" at all,but there are changes you can make to shed weight while leading a healthy and sustainable lifestyle.

The importance comes in the quality of the foods you eat, not necessarily the number of calories you consume, Malik said. She favors of eating patterns that don't abide by a restrictive calorie count, because they generally help people stick with the pattern longer.

Mechanick recommends minimizing your intake of two types of carbs sugars and starches while boosting another: fiber. High-fiber foods,including vegetables, low-glycemic index fruits, beans and nuts, are instrumental to a healthy eating pattern, he said.

"If you can get it up to seven to 10 servings a day, that's great," he said."You can't do that with the keto diet."

Malik urges people trying to lose weightto target foodssuch as whole grains, fruits, vegetables andnuts, while limiting saturated fat, added sugar and added sodium. Balance those practices with daily physical exercise, and you've established a solid base for weight loss and a healthy lifestyle.Althoughshe argues against daily calorie counting, Malik urges caution about portion sizes there's no use in overeating. Avoid appetizers andsnacks in front of screens, and limit meals to one plate of food, the American Heart Association advises.

Losing weight has its benefits, both in a physical and mental sense. But when striving to eat well and hit the treadmill, don't lose sight of what it means to be healthy.

"People have to be content,"Mechanick said."They have to be fulfilled. That's what being healthy and productiveis, and that's really the endpoint."

Many years ago, I was listening to a CD one day. It may be shocking that in this day in age it wasnt a cassette tape or 8-track. As I recall, one of the tracks is mainly instrumental, however I noticed that, about 30 seconds in to the song, there were some faint lyrics in the background. Curious, I skipped back and listened more closely to try and hear it. Sure enough there were five words very faintly spoken.

They were what are you waiting for. Hmmmm. Just what am I waiting for?

If you need a written invitation, then here it is. I personally invite you to get up and start making healthy lifestyle changes. There it is. Post it on your fridge if you want, I dont care. Do what you have to do, right now, no more excuses.

Speaking of excuses and there are plenty of them lets take a look at some major reasons people use when it comes to fitness. Sit back and relax, this is going to be fun.

I dont have time to exercise.

Of course you dont, who does. We all lead super hectic lives with rarely anytime to relax and when we do have time to relax its obviously seeing what will happen to baby Yoda or whoever the little guy is is up too. This must be a legit excuse then, right? The bottom line is that if you dont prioritize your life now, then you wont be able to accomplish the things you want to do later. Life isnt much fun if your health is sub-average. Think of it this way, exercising 30 minutes is only 2 percent of your day. Keep in mind that while exercise may take a little bit of your time, it will make time as well.

I have no energy to exercise.

There are a couple of different angles to this. If you sit around and watch movies all day then of course you will feel lazy. On the flip side, what about those people who work 30 hours a day you say, thus leaving them without time to eat or sleep, surely they should be exempt from exercising, right? Exercise has been shown to increase energy levels and leave people feeling better about themselves and more energized. Just because you work hard every day, does not replace an exercise routine combining cardio, strength and nutrition.

I bet you are not. While many people may feel like they have more years behind them than in front of them, there is no better time to start exercising than today. Exercise will actually make your body younger at any age.

Its easy to make up excuses and put off living a healthy life. Becoming a better you starts now, so what are you waiting for. You owe it to yourself.

Precision technologies will transform industries

The total venture capital funding for precision technologies over the last three years was $1.1 Trillion. At the same time, wellness is a rapidly growing business. Wellness tech that enables people to adapt and manipulate their environments is a budding industry, valued at $333 million.

These trends show that personalization is critical for businesses. People are willing to pay up to a 20% premium on certain DNA-based products and services, a move that puts market pressure on all products and services to become deeply personalized.

Longer lives will also transform business strategies. By 2030, longevity gains from precision nutrition will push healthy life expectancy into the hundreds for those with access to the technology. Corporate strategy will need to adapt to longer lives across talent management, R&D, CSR, and marketing.

Precision data is key to unlocking long-term health and well-being

The pairing of biodata with precision technologies has the power to generate a new set of health and well-being outcomes for consumers. From DNA to voice tech, image recognition to the microbiome, digital biometrics to retinal scanning consumers are now starting to understand the value of their personal, biological data and the implications that the availability of this data has on their potential future well-being. Furthermore, there is increasing awareness that a healthy diet is essential for a healthy brain function.

While still a long way from implementation at scale, according to experts, a good diet must be individualized. There are a growing number of data-rich entities who are leveraging consumer health data in ways that are not transparent. In most cases, these approaches are closed systems. The net result is stifled competition and ultimately, reductions in business dynamism and value for consumers.

According to the report, over 60% of consumer are willing to share data to advance scientific research. This includes their medical data; lifestyle, behavioral and family history data; and genetic info and wearable data. However, 36% of people were not willing to share their data with a private company, if asked. To bring precision consumption to mainstream consumers based on their unique digital biology, the need for consumer protections will only escalate.

What if key stakeholders can join forces to harness the power of technology as a force for societal good grounded in trust and transparency?

The Future of Consumption Platform is working to build a new system called the Precision Data Collaborative that aims to identify the guardrails to ensure the privacy and transparency needs of consumers are being met while enabling data-driven knowledge and innovation to thrive. The collaborative has an ambitious goal of onboarding over 1 million consumers over the next three years to create the most trusted and integrated wellness data set in the world featuring biological, physiological, and behavioral data. As a pilot, this public-private ecosystem will include businesses, members of academia, civil society and government.

Through the power of intentional consent, consumers will know how their data is being used, stored, and shared in ways that are consistent with their interests and the context under which it was collected (e.g. health and well-being). The collaborative will allow consumers to provide a holistic view of their current state of well-being to a select group of organizations who will then make product and service recommendations based on personalized inputs, AI and insights. With healthy competition, consumers will stand to benefit: derive benefits from higher quality and efficacy of precision-driven products and services.

Precision consumption can not only improve the quality of data used in public research and consumer health interventions, longer-term, it can also reduce the ever-increasing burden of healthcare costs on the private and public sectors. The journey starts now.
