There is nodoubt that this is a hard time but it can be taken as an opportunity to begrateful for so many things that we are blessed with. Now that our movement andliberty is restricted, we should focus on how blessed we are with all thethings that were still able to do or which we have been taking for granted.

Glubisz is sharing his story of being diagnosed and treated as well as the importance of following the provincial health guidelines, including social distancing.

I thought I had the seasonal flu, he said. My wife didnt get it and suggested I get checked out and then my employer, BCAA in Langley, said we dont want you back to work until you get checked out.

Glubisz said he went to Delta Hospital late in the day on March 12, just before things started to get crazy.

They put me into a negative pressure room and asked me where I had been, and I did say I was at Costco in Burlington, just below Bellingham, earlier in the month and that is considered a hot zone, he recalled.He said doctors took a nose swab and a chest X-ray, finding some pneumonia on his right lung. He was prescribed a seven-day supply of antibiotics.

I took the meds, and it took a few days to get the test results back, and I had COVID-19, Glubisz said. I felt pretty bad for those six days, very little appetite, lying around in front of the fireplace because I had chills. I had no chest respiratory problems, there was no vomiting, but I was extremely tired.

Glubisz, who is 63 and in good health, works out three or four times a week,suspects his healthy lifestyle helped him fight off the virus, although he did say he hadnt felt that bad for years.

I havent taken a sick day in five years, so it took something major like this to knock me down, he said. Its been about 10 days, and Im feeling pretty much back to normal. I have a bit of a lingering cough, but that should be gone soon.

Glubisz said the care he received at Delta Hospital was top notch.

The care was amazing. I thought Delta Hospital staff were very professional. They were very careful and took extreme caution, he said. Then I began dealing with the health unit who called me daily for temperature checks and to make sure I was on the right track to recovery.

He said people just have to get used to the new normal for the next few weeks.

It didnt really hit home, but when things got a little crazy with all the business closures and shutting things down it became more real, he said. It can happen to anyone. The night before I was talking with my wife and she said I bet you $100 that you dont have the flu. Sure enough the next day I got the results and it was COVID-19. I was convinced I just had the regular flu.

Everyone just has to calm down, stay at home and in a few months we will just all sit back and say what a surreal time this was for us all.

‘Were so sorry we cant be there: Alabama veteran dies quarantined from family – AL.com

To those who knew him, Albert Johnson Trousdale was simply known as Johnson.

The Elgin resident was one of the first casualties of the coronavirus pandemic in Alabama. He was 78.

Trousdale died early March 26 at Huntsville Hospital, just five days after he was diagnosed with a confirmed case of COVID-19, his family announced on a Facebook page updating his battle with and effort to recover from the disease.

Johnson went to join Nicky (his late son) in Heaven this morning, the family posted on the Facebook page Thursday. He will be missed by so many people. Please pray for Nancy, Julie, Matt and Nicole.

A 21-year veteran of the United States Army and Alabama National Guard, Trousdale also spent 31 years working for Monsanto in Decatur before retiring.

He also ran a home improvement business for several years and was an active member of Elgin Church of Christ. His son, Matthew, told WAAY 31 last week that Trousdale maintained a pretty healthy lifestyle and ran about 6 miles a day, though he experienced some heart problems in the past and underwent hip replacement surgery in January.

According to his family, Trousdale began running a fever on March 9 and his leg began to swell, but he did not have a cough or exhibit other symptoms of the virus. He was admitted to Huntsville Hospital a week later, when doctors discovered blood clots in his ankle and groin area, with one of them moving to his lungs, resulting in the development of pneumonia.

He was tested for coronavirus on March 19 and put in isolation. That night, he had trouble breathing and was intubated but was resting well the following morning. Two days later, the test results came back; Trousdale tested positive for coronavirus and was in critical but stable condition.

His family chronicled Trousdales battle with the virus over the next several days via the Facebook page, all the while remaining in quarantine themselves.

Its just hard with my daddy up there and we cant be with him, his daughter, Julie Trousdale, told the Times Daily. Thats the hardest part. Were all quarantined and separated. Were just praying and hoping that he makes it up there without anybodys support.

Trousdale was placed on a ventilator and given an experimental drug, according to posts by his family, and he was also placed in a medically induced deep sleep to keep him from fighting the ventilator and trying to out-breathe it. On March 25, Trousdale took a turn for the worst, according to the family.

In Trousdales final moments, a nurse FaceTimed with the family to allow them to say their goodbyes and see what was happening, according to WAAY 31, since they were unable to be by his side in the hospital due to regulations stemming from the contagiousness of the virus.

"I ended up telling him, I said Nancy loves you, Matt loves you, Julie loves you, and I love you, and we're so sorry we can't be there because we wanted one last message," his daughter in-law, Nicole, told WAAY 31.

Trousdale is survived by his wife of 62 years, Nancy Butler Trousdale; his daughter, Julie Ann Trousdale; son, Matthew Zane Trousdale; daughter in-law, Nicole Allen Trousdale; granddaughter, April Nicole Trousdale; sister, Rosa Lee Garcia; brother in-law, Albert Garcia, and too many nieces and nephews to name.

Trousdales family is also urging everyone to abide by social distancing guidelines and do their part to help prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Please, everyone take it seriously and stay at home, Nicole told the Times Daily last week.

March is International Women's History Month, which, remarkably, began in 1911 and highlights the journey of women who felt destined to accomplish new feats despite their plight in the workplace.

Before World War II, women held jobs as secretaries, receptionists, store clerks, nurses and teachers. They accepted societal restrictions, and considered themselves lucky to have the opportunity to work. The war relaxed restrictions, as men to entered the military.

Women's Airforce Service Pilots, or WASPs, were the first women to fly American military aircraft, accumulating more than 60 million flight miles and enabling thousands of male U.S. pilots to begin active duty in World War II. More than 1,000 WASPs served, but with prejudice; they were classified as civil service employees without official military status, honors or benefits. They did not receive full military status until 1977. Not until 65 years later did they receive the Congressional Gold Medal, one of the highest civilian honors.

Though 310,000-plus women worked in the U.S. aircraft industry, representing 65% of the industry's workforce, women received half the wages men received and were pressured to leave their jobs when the men returned home from the war. Most women returned to the role of homemaker. Fast-forward to 2020.

Kate received a bachelor's in marketing, communications and public relations, and she worked in economic development marketing. After several vacations to Breckenridge, Colorado, she moved there to work in radio and then retail. Coronavirus raged in Britain over the weekend, with 19,522 people now confirmed to have tested positive for COVID-19 and scores more expected to as widespread tests gets underway. Saturday and Sunday also saw 550 more deaths as healthcare systems struggle to contain the crisis. This came as the chief deputy medical officer warned that normal life will not resume for at least six months.

With the general public now confronting the prospect of staying indoors for months on end, health experts are focusing their attention on what you should and shouldn't do to maintain both your physical and mental health.

Experts at the World Health Organization have issued a stark warning against drinking alcohol during this fraught time.

It may be tempting to drink alcohol as a coping mechanism but the health body advises against this approach: "Alcohol is not only a mind-altering and dependence-producing substance, harmful at any level consumed, but it also weakens the immune system."

WHO continues: "Thus, alcohol use and especially heavy use undermines your bodys ability to cope with infectious disease, including COVID-19."

"Alcohol consumption is also known to increase symptoms of depression, anxiety, fear and panic symptoms that can intensify during isolation and self-quarantine."

Another cause for concern is that alcohol also makes certain medications less effective, while increasing the potency and toxicity of others, notes the health site.

"Do not consume alcohol in combination with pain medication, as alcohol will interfere with your liver functions and might cause serious problems, including liver failure," it warns.

Living with COVID-19 – The Phuket News

There is nowhere you can go in Phuket without the COVID-19 coronavirus determining every aspect of your life, other than staying at home hoping not to become infected. Here is a reality check on what COVID-19 means in Phuket.

Dr Thomas Lodi is a wellness expert who has been practicing medicine for over 30 years. He now heads The LifeCo wellness centre located between Nai Thon and Nai Yang beaches, just south of Phuket International Airport.

What are the real dangers of COVID-19, the best we know right now?

Respiratory failure and cytokine storm (excessive immune responses that damage lungs). The two cell types to which this virus attaches are mucus cells and cilia cells in the lungs. These cells together keep the lungs clean mucus is secreted to trap particulate matter and the cilia beat rhythmically outward towards the mouth like a conveyor belt. With these cells non-functional, the lungs will accumulate everything from microorganisms, waste products, toxins from the environment and so on. Also, the immune system gets turned on full blast and causes system wide inflammation.

Who is primarily at risk?

The elderly over 65 and those with chronic illnesses and compromised immune systems.

What are the symptoms and how bad are they for most people?

The symptoms are a dry cough, shortness of breath, aches and pains, weakness, no appetite and, of course, fever.

Most people will not know they have it: 81% of cases symptoms are mild (lungs); 14% become severely ill; 4.7% become critically ill; and the fatality rate is 3.4 %. Of course these figures may change as we learn more about the virus.

How is COVID-19 contracted?

Fifty percent of infections are hand to face (mouth, nose, eyes). Also, the virus can be airborne in droplets from sneezing and coughing.

Phuket seems to be the only place where people who come into frequent contact with strangers are the only ones wearing face masks. Everyday people going about their daily lives do not. Should people wear face masks? Who should? Why?

If you are not sick or around people, there is no need to wear a mask. Here are the WHO recommendations:

If you are being self-isolated due to one of the following circumstances:

You have travelled from high risk areas within the past 14 days; or

You have been in close contact with a confirmed case of coronavirus;

then, you should use a surgical mask in the following circumstances:

You need to leave your home for any reason and be in public areas;

You are visiting a medical facility; or

You have symptoms and other people are present in the same room as you.

N95 masks filter out about 95% of all liquid or airborne particles.

People have expressed sincere concern about the fingerprint-scanning device at Immigration at the airport. Should people be concerned about this? What should people do about this, if anything?

They have hand sanitiser bottles next to the fingerprinting device. Use it twice: once before and once after.

People have also expressed their opinion that the normal everyday temperature in Phuket and elsewhere in Thailand has helped to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the country. One senior health official has even said he expects COVID-19 to disappear as Thailand enters its annual hot season. Is there any merit in this understanding?

Not enough is known about this variant of coronavirus because it is new. The standard coronavirus that causes upper respiratory illnesses remains intact in cold weather and dies quickly at 58C.

Are the precautions the Thai government is taking to prevent the spread of COVID-19 reasonable? Or is it lacking? Or even an overreaction? Or a bit of both? Any there any examples that highlight your opinion on this?

The Thai government will do what all governments are doing Each government has had an initial different response, but now that the pandemic is without doubt, all governments will be requiring the same regarding social distancing and quarantines.

Now that COVID-19 has already reached around the world, do you believe travel bans should still be in place? Should people still travel?

Traveling makes no sense now since most countries are locked down, and it is safer not to travel at this point to keep the virus contained.

What can people do to help protect themselves against being infected with COVID-19?

Viruses are not really alive so they cannot be killed. Ultimately, it is our immune systems that develop an adaptive response to recognise any cell infected with the virus and eliminate it. Everything we that we need to do to avoid becoming ill must be geared towards strengthening our immunesystems.

Sleep early and at least seven hours.

Eat no more than two healthy meals per day with 18 hours between your last and first meals. During the window of time when the body is not digesting food, it has time to focus much more energy to the immune system.

Eat plant-based, whole foods rather than processed foods.

Eat at least 70% of your food uncooked and organic.

Meditate at least twice per day.

Vitamin C not only can treat active infection but can protect from getting infected. Vitamin C actually prevents viruses from entering cells. Take from eight to 15 grammes per day orally, depending on bowel tolerance, body size and stress levels

Vitamin A: 30,000-50,000 units per day with food until vitamin A levels in the blood are over 300 iu/dL

Vitamin D: 30,000 iu/day to keep levels in blood above 70, which contributes to enhancing immune response.

Zinc: 90mg per day

Selenium: 400ug per day.

At a Glance

American dont live as long as people in most other high-income countries. Heart disease and cancer are two of the most common preventable chronic diseases in the United States. An unhealthy lifestyle increases your risk for these and other chronic diseases that can lead to an early death.

To explore the effects of healthy habits on Americans health and lifespan, a team of scientists led by Frank Hu at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health analyzed data from more than 78,000 women and 44,000 men who participated in two nationwide surveys: the Nurses Health Study (NHS) and the Health Professionals Follow-up Study (HPFS). They used other data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to estimate the distribution of lifestyle choices and death rates across the U.S. population. The research was supported in part by NIHs National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and National Cancer Institute (NCI). Results were published online in Circulation on April 30, 2018.

The team collected data on five different low-risk lifestyle factors and compared health outcomes for those who adopted all five with those who didnt adopt any. The five factors included maintaining a healthy eating pattern (getting the daily recommended amountsof vegetables, fruit, nuts, whole grains, polyunsaturated fatty acids, and omega-3 fatty acids and limiting red and processed meats, beverages with added sugar, trans fat, and sodium); not smoking; getting at least 3.5 hours of moderate to vigorous physical activity each week; drinking only moderate amounts of alcohol (one drink or less per day for women or two drinks or less per day for men); and maintaining a normal weight (body mass index between 18.5 and 24.9). The researchers also collected information about the participants medical history, such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes, as well as when they died.

At age 50, women who didnt adopt any of the five healthy habits were estimated to live on average until they were 79 years old and men until they were 75.5 years. In contrast, women who adopted all five healthy lifestyle habits lived 93.1 years and men lived 87.6 years.

Independently, each of the five healthy lifestyle factors significantly lowered the risk of total death, death from cancer, and death from heart disease.

This study underscores the importance of following healthy lifestyle habits for improving longevity in the U.S. population, Hu says. However, adherence to healthy lifestyle habits is very low. Therefore, public policies should put more emphasis on creating healthy food, built, and social environments to support and promote healthy diet and lifestyles.
