Dr. Thomas Fliedner is excited to be celebrating 20 years in the Flower Mound/Lewisville area as a board certified obstetrician and gynecologist.

I have delivered thousands of babies in the North Texas area. I have enjoyed helping so many families, said the partner with four other doctors at North Texas OBGYN.

I participated in developing the minimally invasive surgical programs locally including performing the first robotic GYN surgery in Lewisville. I was one of the original practitioners at the Flower Mound hospital when it opened. And I have served in a variety of committee leadership capacities and mentored new practitioners.

Fliedner is more than just an OBGYN specialist as he has expanded services to women and men.

Doctors grow with their practice. When I was young I was most interested in delivering babies and I still love that, he said. As I mature and my patient base matures I find great interest in helping people enjoy better health. Preventing disease is more powerful than treating disease.

After considerable research, he launched North Texas Vitality in 2018 as a way to better focus on using hormones for both men and women. He said using the right hormones can very much help patients enjoy their best health.

Taking a bath isn’t just relaxing. It could also be good for your heart, study says – CNN

It could also lower your risk of heart disease and stroke, a new study finds.

They discovered this after tracking the bathing habits and cardiovascular disease risk of more than 61,000 Japanese adults for 20 years.

Bathing linked to heart health

Participants ages 40 to 59 with no history of heart disease were followed from 1990 to 2009. At the start of the study, they were separated into groups by how often they took a bath in a tub on average: less than once a week, one to two times per week, almost daily or every day.

The researchers also gathered information on potentially influential factors, such as the participants' weight, smoking status, how often they exercised, alcohol intake, job status, education, how long they slept, perceived mental stress and life enjoyment.

By the end of the follow-up period in 2009, out of more than 30,000 final participants, the researchers documented 2,097 cases of cardiovascular disease, including 275 heart attacks, 53 sudden cardiac deaths and 1,769 strokes. They found that the more the participants bathed, the lower their risk was for cardiovascular disease.

The temperature of the water, based on participants' descriptions, also mattered. There was a 26% lower risk for heart disease with warm water, and a 35% lower risk of cardiovascular disease for hot water.

Why bathing could help the heart

Tub bathing is considered to have a preventative effect against heart disease by improving what's called "hemodynamic function," the report said. This describes the way that blood is able to be pumped efficiently through the body, said Dr. Eric Brandt, a cardiologist and lipidologist at the Yale School of Medicine's Yale New Haven Hospital, who wasn't involved in the study.

Good hemodynamic function would mean that the heart is able to efficiently pump blood without having to fight against conditions such as high blood pressure.

"Good hemodynamic function translates to a low blood pressure or normal blood pressure states, where the heart is able to pump efficiently and get blood to all the organs," Brandt said. "Bad hemodynamics are either extreme high or low blood pressure states where the heart has to work harder, essentially.

"It seems like tub bathing is similar to exercise in that it increases the heart's work, [but] it does so by relaxing the blood vessels and getting blood pumping to other parts of the body. So it creates this extra temporary work for the heart, but not one that's a negative consequence."

Sudden death associated with hot baths is common in Japan, where the study was conducted, but frequency of bathing wasn't associated with a higher risk of sudden death in this study.

Other factors for consideration

While the study suggests that daily baths could help lower your risk for heart disease, that isn't the only factor to consider.

Brandt isn't convinced that bathing alone is the main reason for the study's findings of lower heart disease risk; it's more likely, he said, that regularly taking a warm or hot bath "can have a temporary physiological change that's similar to exercise," and that other healthy lifestyle factors came into play.

"Our population is so different than the Japanese, and lifestyle especially," Brandt said. "The risk might be different for Americans compared to Japanese in the context where we carry a heavier burden of chronic lifestyle-related illnesses. I would say that among patients where this could apply is that among people up to their 70s, with tub bathing at least there wasn't a signal in the study of cardiovascular harm."

While there's only a link between bathing and a lower risk of heart disease, bathing likely doesn't lead to any kind of cardiovascular harm if done safely, Brandt said.

The Pros and Cons of Veganism, According to a Dietitian – Yahoo Lifestyle

If the surplus ofvegan-friendly restaurants, dishes, and meal kits are any indication,veganism has gone mainstream. But dietary changes largeand small should never be taken lightly. Your body, brain, and lifestyle will undergo seismic shifts as you add and remove foods from your diet. It's always best to conduct your own research and consult a doctor or nutritionist before taking the leap.

We tappedTracy Lockwood Beckerman, a registered dietitian and the author ofThe Better Period Food Solution, about the pros and cons of veganism. Before we dive in, keep in mind that a vegan dietisn't for everyone. "People who have a history of disordered eating or a disordered relationship with food are not good candidates for a vegan diet," Beckerman said. "Also, those with food allergies or intolerances, or thosewho are low in nutrients like iron, B12, and zinc, should talk to their doctor before going vegan."

Below, start your research phase by reading up on the pros and cons of veganism, according to Beckerman.

1. Community. Roughly1.6 million adultsin the U.S. follow a vegan diet. "The social aspecteither online or in-personallows people to connectwith one another and share tips, meal ideas, and advice throughout their vegan journey," notes Beckerman.

2. Environment. Many people choose to adopt a vegan dietfor environmental reasons. "Because animal products generate more greenhouse gas emissions than plants, going vegan helps decrease the amount of these harmful substances in the atmosphere," she explains.

3. Water conservation."It takes a substantial amount of water to produce beef, as compared to grains, legumes, fruits, and vegetables," explains Beckerman. "Animal agriculture is a more water-intensive process, so going vegantremendously reduces the amount of water used."

4. Health. Generally speaking, it can't hurt to increase your intake of plant-based proteins like beans, legumes, and tofu while reducing meat consumption. "Cutting back on red meat, in general, has been linked to a bevy of health benefits, like reduced risk of chronic disease, cancer, and cardiovascular illness," she notes.

1. Nutrient restriction. Like any diet, veganism restricts your intake of certain foods. This isn't ideal for someone with a food intolerance, as your nutritional profile may already be limited. Furthermore, someone with aniron or calcium deficiency may struggle to meet their nutritional needs without animal products. "Because veganism requires an all-or-nothing approach, I have hesitations about recommending it to clients," adds Beckerman.

2. Physical health. We currently lack convincing, long-term researchabout the health benefits of veganism. "Of course, it's better for the environment short- and long-term, but the short-term health benefits uncovered in recent research do not speak tothe diet's long-term effects," she explains. "For that reason,I wouldnt recommend following a vegan diet indefinitely."

3. Psychological health.As with any diet, you risk placing too much emphasis on appearance and not enough on health. "The healing benefits of a vegan lifestyle may not be applicable to all," says Beckerman. "Veganism or dieting, in general, can disconnect someone from the health benefits of eating and redirect their attention to body image."

4. Lack of education. "Without proper education and guidance, it may be difficult to get all of the wholesome nutrients found in a non-restrictive diet," she explains. "Because you're excluding the vitamins and minerals found in animal products, like zinc, vitamin B12, iron, calcium, and vitamin D, its important to find equivalent plant-based sources elsewhere."

If you're still on the fence about adopting a vegan diet, you can always test the waters with a few substitutions. "Even if you dont want to follow a 100% vegan lifestyle, you can try more plant-based options and vow to go animal-free on certain days of the week," she suggests. "For example, you can eliminate red meat and supplementthat protein, zinc, and iron with plant-based products, like chickpea pasta or lentils.

PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) has issued a 'Vegan Guide to Animal Crossing', listing all of the things you can and can't do to keep up with a vegan lifestyle. It kicks things off by saying that you shouldn't fish, describing it as "cruel" and "bad for the environment"; you shouldn't catch bugs; you shouldn't work towards the Museum, because "bugs dont belong in tiny cases in a museum for other villagers to gawk at"; and that you shouldn't dig up clams.

In a shocking section titled 'Is Tom Nook Exploiting you?', the guide explains that Tom is a racoon dog, an animal often killed for fur. It says you should probably "cut him some slack" because his family may have been beaten, electrocuted, gassed, or skinned alive. Sheesh.

So what can you do? Well, you can eat fruit. PETA uses the added abilities you gain when eating fruit to bolster its point on why this is a good thing, and goes on to say that you can help promote veganism with banners and the like.

It's worth noting that the guide appears to be something of a publicity stunt and not entirely serious; the promotion of animal welfare is obviously a wonderful thing, but we dare say that most Animal Crossing players wouldn't actually go and rip hermit crabs from their homes to sell them in real life.

HANAPEPE Physician, nutritionist and author Steven Masley was planning to be at Talkstory Bookstore in Hanapepe on Friday, signing copies of his latest book The Mediterranean Method.

With recent COVID-19 stay-at-home rules and travel quarantines, however, the Pacific Northwest resident is postponing his book signing.

A trained chef, European sailboat captain and the creator of a health program for public television, 30 Days to a Younger Heart, Masleys newest book promotes an eating style that some studies show leads to a healthier life.

He is a fellow with the American Heart Association, the American College of Nutrition, and a former fellow with the American Academy of Family Physicians. He is also an affiliate clinical associate professor at the University of South Florida.

He has appeared on over 700 media interviews, including public television, The Today Show and the Discovery Channel.

His newest book looks at the advantages to the philosophies of The Mediterranean Diet, and provides recipes and practical ways to make the diet work for the average person.

The Mediterranean Diet has been rated as the overall No. 1 diet on the planet three years in a row by US News and World Report. Masley says these honors should not be too surprising, as Mediterranean countries have some of the longest life spans on the planet and they have lower rates of heart disease, diabetes, memory loss, cancer and obesity than nearly all other western countries.

The meals are simple to prepare, Masley says. It has also been ranked as the easiest diet to follow long-term.

The diet itself is based upon the eating habits of people living around the Mediterranean Sea: Spain, France, Italy, Greece and Turkey, as well as Middle Eastern and northern African countries.

Masley says what these cuisines have in common is the consumption of fresh, seasonal, whole foods featuring vegetables, fruits, beans, nuts, herbs and spices; the predominate use of extra-virgin olive oil; moderate amounts of seafood and poultry; and the moderate consumption of red wine.

What the Mediterranean diet specifically has avoided is processed foods, sugar, sweeteners and artificial flavors. Red meats are rarely on the menu or are used sparingly to flavor a dish.

Considering all these benefits, Masley said he felt compelled to write a book, The Mediterranean Method, to help promote this eating plan and to make it simple to follow.

To do background research for this book, I read nearly 1,000 scientific journal articles, plus, my wife Nicole and I bought a sailboat and sailed from Spain to Turkey during 2018 and 2019. We visited small ports, food markets, family-run restaurants, and searched for regional recipes that were easy to prepare, delicious and healthy.

Let me share my version of the food and lifestyle pyramid of a low-glycemic Mediterranean diet, adapted from my book, The Mediterranean Method, Masley said.

This type of care is provided by an interdisciplinary team of professionals that can include nurses, doctors, social workers, clergy, and others who are focused on providing relief from the symptoms and stress of a serious illness, and in doing so, improving the quality of life for both the person with the illness and the people who care about them.

Part of the care provided by a palliative care service is discussing the medical facts as assessed by the medical team in language that is easily understood, answering questions about the medical plan of care and health care choices surrounding the plan of care, all while keeping the person experiencing the illness at the center.

During these goals of care discussions, the palliative care team assists with helping people with serious illnesses identify the person they would rely on to make medical decisions on their behalf if they were unable, and to talk through their goals and preferences as they relate to future heath care wishes.

What you need to know about exercising outdoors during the coronavirus outbreak – The Know

Coloradans who place a high value on fitness, exercise and outdoor recreation have been in a quandary since the outbreak of the coronavirus, wondering how to run, hike, ride bikes or ski without putting themselves at risk for exposure. On Friday, The Denver Post interviewed state epidemiologist Dr. Rachel Herlihy for guidance. She has been with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment for eight years and has been the state epidemiologist for three years.

How concerned are you about the potential for transmission of the COVID-19 virus in parks and on trails as people seek exercise for their physical and mental health? Weve all seen images of people congregating in parking lots and at trailheads.

Its a great point. Our concerns about transmission of this virus are really mostly when people are going to be closer together. If that is occurring in outdoor spaces, that is certainly concerning. We are very serious about social distancing and the orders that local jurisdictions and the governors office have issued. We know they are really important to try and protect people and save lives. We certainly know its important for people to exercise, but we want people to be doing that in a way that maintains social distancing.

Are you saying that people are relatively safe if they are maintaining that six foot distancing out there?

Yes. I think if people are maintaining those social distancing spaces, it is safe to be outdoors. We want people to exercise. We know it is very important for peoples physical and mental health, but a crowded park, a crowded parking lot, is certainly a place where transmission could occur. So we encourage people to find ways to exercise outdoors that avoid crowds and situations where you are going to be less than six feet from other people.

We hear about this six-foot space a lot. It sounds like you are reasonably confident that if someone is more than six feet away from someone, even if they have the virus, theyre not going to be contagious.

I would say its low-risk, not zero-risk. We certainly know the closer you are, and as that period of (exposure) extends, the greater the risk is, but transiently passing by someone at a distance of greater than six feet would be considered low-risk. Six feet is chosen for a reason. We know thats the distance that respiratory droplets can travel.

In addition to the distance youre keeping from one person, its also thinking about how many people are present. If you are six feet from one person, thats different from being six feet from 20 people. In general, we want the numbers of people that are close together to be quite small.

If someone is running or hiking on a single-track trail in a park or an open space and someone approaches from the other direction, is it sufficient to simply step aside to maintain that six feet? And what if someone coughs in an encounter like that?

Certainly coughing would be concerning, so if individuals are on a trail coughing, and you are in close proximity, that would certainly increase the risk of transmission. We would hope that individuals that are out getting exercise are generally feeling well. We know the risk of transmission for individuals that are symptomatic, but there is some small risk of transmission when individuals are asymptomatic as well before they develop symptoms.

Running on a wide road instead of a narrow trail, especially if that is a popular trail, is a great thing to do.

How contagious is someone who has contracted the virus but is asymptomatic?

We know that the virus is spread especially between people who arent touching the same surfaces typically by coughing or sneezing. Thats how those respiratory droplets are projected into the air another person can inhale those respiratory droplets. That means the risk of transmission is going to be much greater if someone is symptomatic, so we believe more transmission occurs from people who are symptomatic than from people who are asymptomatic.

The difference might be in a household or a close indoor setting where an individual could potentially touch their face and then touch surfaces and contaminate those surfaces. Thats different. Thats typically not going to happen as much hiking or biking on a trail. Youre not going to be sharing surfaces with an individual. That does get to the point of avoiding play structures, playgrounds, those sorts of settings. There is an opportunity for surfaces to be contaminated.

The governor has been very consistent about telling people they should get outside and exercise, that its important. Why do you and the governor consider that to be so important?

Its about peoples physical and mental (health). Especially right now, its important for people to have those healthy outlets. Colorado in particular is a state that embraces an active lifestyle. We want Coloradans to maintain that active, healthy lifestyle they have during this difficult time.

One of the things the governor has suggested is that perhaps you go for a jog less often. Perhaps there is an alternative to going for a jog. Can you take an online class in your basement or living room? Are there other things you can do to decrease risk of exposure to other individuals? We want people to be able to do this be outside and exercise but also come up with strategies to maintain social distancing while continuing to be active.

Open spaces and parks tend to be magnets for people. Is it better to stay close to home and exercise in a neighborhood where there are two-lane streets with sidewalks on both sides so people can cross to the other side of the street, as opposed to recreating on trails?

Absolutely. Find those routes for your walks and runs and bike rides that are more likely to have fewer people on them. Thats a great alternative to going to a popular park. Another strategy is to go at less popular times of the day. In the spring, lots of folks are probably out midday when its warmest out, so instead consider going at alternate times when its not going to be quite so crowded.

Is there anything else you want people to know on this topic?

People should use their judgment and be smart, understand how serious this virus is and really follow those guidelines to keep themselves and the people around them healthy. At this point, we dont feel theres a need to close trails or limit peoples exposure to nature and exercise. But we all need to do our part so we dont have to close trails or limit access to recreation in the state. These measures are serious, and they are about saving lives.

Some adopt a vegetarian lifestyle for ethical reasons. Many vegetarians, for example, avoid meat because they do not want animals killed or harmed. These individuals may object to the treatment of animals raised on industrial farms.

The environment is an additional concern for some vegetarians. Issues have been cited concerning all aspects of the environment, such as animal waste from factory farms polluting the land and water or forests that are cut down to make room for grazing cattle.

Religious beliefs also can play an important role in vegetarianism. For instance, followers of Jainism practice nonviolence (also called ahimsa, meaning "do no harm"), and do not eat meat or certain vegetables, such as onions, potatoes and garlic. Hindus also believe in ahimsa and are the world's largest vegetarian population. They believe in the dietary customs of self-control and purity of mind and spirit. Seventh-day Adventists practice a vegetarian lifestyle, while Buddhists also support the concept of ahimsa (although some eat fish or meat).

Many people make the switch to a vegetarian diet because of the potential health benefits. Vegetarian eating patterns have been associated with improved health outcomes including lower levels of obesity, a reduced risk of heart disease and lower blood pressure. Also, vegetarians tend to consume a lower proportion of calories from fat and fewer overall calories, and more fiber, potassium and vitamin C than non-vegetarians. These characteristics, plus lifestyle factors, may contribute to the health benefits among vegetarians.

Females Live Longer Than MalesAmong Humans and Other Mammals, Too – Smithsonian.com

Women live longer than men by an average of six to eight years, according to the World Health Organization. This intriguing trend is seen in nearly every country around the world, suggesting that it may be driven by profound biological differences between the sexes. And longevity may not be limited to human females; according to a sweeping new study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, a range of female mammals live longer than their male counterparts, too.

Scientists have long assumed this to be true, but according to the study authors, the assumption was based on a small number of case studies on wild mammals, or records of mammals housed in captivity, where lifespan and aging patterns are often not representative of conspecifics in the wild. For the new report, the researchers compiled and analyzed demographic data from different types of studies, including mortality estimates that had been obtained from long-term monitoring of wild populations, and mortality rates obtained from dead animals collected in the field. In total, the teams analysis covered 134 populations and 101 species, including lions, orcas, reindeer, and squirrels.

Among 60 percent of the populations studied, females lived longer than males. On average, their lifespans were 18.6 percent longer, which is considerably higher than the advantage for female humans, who live on average 7.8 percent longer than their male counterparts.

But why do such discrepancies exist between the sexes? Scientists have long sought to answer this question as it pertains to humans, and complex behavioral differences likely come into play. Men, for instance, are more likely to smoke, drink excessively and be overweight, Perminder Sachdev, a professor of neuropsychiatry at the University of New South Wales in Australia who has studied human longevity, told Times Markham Heid last year. They are also less likely to seek medical help and to adhere to medical treatments.

Biological factors may also drive the survival gap. Testosterone, for instance, increases levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol in men, putting them at greater risk of hypertension, stroke and heart disease.

Womens biology, on the other hand, may give them a boost. One theory posits that having two copies of the same sex chromosome confers protective benefits that govern longevity; women have two copies of the X chromosome, while men have X and Y chromosomes. Earlier this month, a study in Biology Letters gave credence to this hypothesis when it found a link between sex chromosomes and lifespan across more than 200 species. Female mammals, which have two of the same chromosomes, tended to live longer than males. The dual-chromosome trend applied to species that don't have X or Y chromosomes, too, and to species that in which males have two of the same chromosomes. For example, male birds, which have two Z chromosomes, have the survival advantage over females, which have one Z and one W chromosome.

The authors of the new study note that male mammals also devote substantial resources toward the growth and maintenance of secondary sexual traits, like larger body size or antlers. In certain environmental circumstances, these traits might come at a cost. When looking at bighorn sheep, for instance, the researchers found virtually no difference in lifespan between males and females in ranges where resources were consistently available. But in one location where winters are particularly harsh, there were significant sex differences in lifespan.

Male bighorn sheep use lots of resources towards sexual competition, towards the growth of a large body mass, Jean-Francois Lematre, first author of the new study, tells Matt McGrath of the BBC. [T]hey might be more sensitive to environmental conditions.

Both genetic variations and environmental conditions, in other words, likely play a role in sex differences in lifespan. Untangling these intertwined factors wont be easy, the study authors acknowledgebut further research, they write, will undoubtedly provide innovative insights into the evolutionary roots and physiology underlying aging in both sexes.
