The coronavirus pandemic has caused another problem: an anxiety pandemic.

As the world is seemingly in chaos, with news outlets reporting about the pandemic non-stop and doctors spreading information on how to stay safe and protect each other, it can be quite overwhelming for anyone to navigate these difficult times. Coupled with our governments call for social distancing, effectively eliminating any physical social contact, all of this isenough to make any person go through psychological hardship.

If you are suddenly feeling shortness of breath, chest pain, dryness in the throator heart palpitations, especially when thinking or reading news about the coronavirus, then you might be experiencing an anxiety attack. The symptoms might increase the more you worry about the coronavirus and disappear altogether when youre distracted. This is all a sign of a classic anxiety attack.

Dont worry, you are not alone.

People have been reporting instances of coronavirus anxiety. Even in the clinic where I worked as a medical doctor, a lot of people are coming in with symptoms of shortness of breath, dry throatand cough. When asked if they have a fever or history of traveling, which is a telltale criterion necessary to diagnose the coronavirus for us physicians, they all said no. When prodded further, these people would go on to describe that their feelings are exacerbated by reading the news.

It is unlikely that you have the coronavirus. Instead, you might be experiencing an anxiety attack, I said to these patients.

According to psychologists, coronavirus anxiety is increasing in number of cases. Some groups of people are especially vulnerable: people with preexisting anxiety disorders, tendencies toward panic and people with a history of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

Baruch Fischhoff, a professor at Carnegie Mellon University and expert on public perception of risk, explained why we might be worrying more about new and unknown risks such as the coronavirus than familiar ones.

The coronavirus comes from a group of viruses that includes the famous MERS CoV and SARS CoV, which were reported as an outbreak in 2012 and 2003, respectively. According to data, we know that the coronavirus outbreak is not as deadly as the SARS epidemic, which killed 10 percentof the 8,093 confirmed cases. The coronavirus is even far less deadly than the SARS epidemic, which killed 34 percentof roughly 2,500 confirmed cases.

But this is not necessarily public knowledge. People are still more afraid of the coronavirus.

The reason for this, according to Dr. Fischhoff, might be simply because the number of cases and death tolls of the coronavirus continues to rise every day. With the coronavirus, we dont know where its going, he said in a podcast interview about coronavirus anxiety with the American Psychological Association.

According to Paul Slovic, PhD, a researcher in the field of risk and decision-making at the University of Oregon, another plausible explanation for the rise in coronavirus anxiety might be simply because people use emotions, instead of logical analysis, to evaluate risks. Instead of seeing the data, people make assumptions based on the worst and use a cognitive distortion tactic called catastrophizing, which is an irrational thought where we make something out to be far worse than it actually is.

How to handle coronavirus anxiety

Again, panic and anxiety is not a useful response toward the coronavirus pandemic. However, it might be hard to not feel that way when the news and even your own family are sharing information about coronavirus constantly.

The World Health Organization and Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently shared information on how to deal with stress during the coronavirus pandemic.

1. Limit your exposure to media coverage on the coronavirus.

This means taking a break from places where fake information or hoaxes are thriving, such as Facebook, WhatsApp groups or other types of social media without credibility. Instead, stick to two or three trusted sources of information such as the WHO or the CDC.

2. Gather only necessary information to take precautions and prepare your plans to protect yourself and your family.

Again, said information must be obtained from trusted sources, such as the WHO, the CDC or your local government agency.

In addition, no need to panic-buy or over-buy. Unless you are a medical officer, then you dont need any protective hazmat suits, boots or face shields. Surgical masks and hand sanitizers are enough as precautions.

3. Stay in contact with your friends, familiesand loved ones.

Social distancing can worsen preexisting anxiousness. Give your friends or family a text or a call. Talk to the people you trust about your feelings.

4. If you are staying at home, work to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

This includes proper diet, sleep and physical exercise. Stick to a daily routine and avoid indulging in idleness like staying in bed all day or locking yourself up in your room.

5. Dont use smoking, alcohol or other drugs to deal with your emotions.

Instead, make plans to seek professional help from a mental counselor if your anxiety still persists.

As the coronavirus pandemic is rampant, the human mind has been another one of its casualties. Coronavirus anxiety is another aspect of the coronavirus pandemic that is overlooked. But actually, theres no need to panic.

What Might be the Best Way to Delivery Nanoparticle Therapy for Cancer? – Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology News

Scientists in the cancer nanomedicine community debate whether use of nanoparticles can best deliver drug therapy to tumors passively, allowing the nanoparticles to diffuse into tumors and become held in place, or actively, adding a targeted anti-cancer molecule to bind to specific cancer cell receptors and, in theory, keep the nanoparticle in the tumor longer. Now, new research on human and mouse tumors in mice by investigators at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center suggests the question is even more complicated.

Laboratory studies testing both methods in six models of breast cancer; five human cancer cell lines and one mouse cancer in mice with three variants of the immune system found that nanoparticles coated with trastuzumab, a drug that targets human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-positive breast cancer cells, were better retained in the tumors than plain nanoparticles, even in tumors that did not express the pro-growth HER2 protein. However, immune cells of the host exposed to nanoparticles induced an anti-cancer immune response by activating T cells that invaded and slowed tumor growth. The results of the work Nanoparticle interactions with immune cells dominate tumor retention and induce T cellmediated tumor suppression in models of breast cancer, appears in Science Advances.

The factors that influence nanoparticle fate in vivo following systemic delivery remain an area of intense interest. Of particular interest is whether labeling with a cancer-specific antibody ligand (active targeting) is superior to its unlabeled counterpart (passive targeting). Using models of breast cancer in three immune variants of mice, we demonstrate that intratumor retention of antibody-labeled nanoparticles was determined by tumor-associated dendritic cells, neutrophils, monocytes, and macrophages and not by antibody-antigen interactions, write the investigators.

Systemic exposure to either nanoparticle type induced an immune response leading to CD8+ T cell infiltration and tumor growth delay that was independent of antibody therapeutic activity. These results suggest that antitumor immune responses can be induced by systemic exposure to nanoparticles without requiring a therapeutic payload. We conclude that immune status of the host and microenvironment of solid tumors are critical variables for studies in cancer nanomedicine and that nanoparticle technology may harbor potential for cancer immunotherapy.

Its been known for a long time that nanoparticles, when injected into the bloodstream, are picked up by scavenger-like macrophages and other immune system cells, explains senior study author Robert Ivkov, PhD, associate professor of radiation oncology and molecular radiation sciences at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins.

Many researchers in the field have been focused on trying to reduce interactions with immune cells, because they have been trying to increase the circulation time of the nanoparticles and their retention in tumor cells. But our study demonstrates that the immune cells in the tumor collect and react to the particles in such a way to stimulate an anti-cancer response. This may hold potential for advancing beyond drug delivery toward developing cancer immunotherapies.

The investigators conducted a few in vitro experiments in their study. First, they applied some plain starch-coated iron oxide nanoparticles and others coated with trastuzumab to five human breast cancer cell lines, finding that the amount of binding between the trastuzumab-coated nanoparticles and cells depended on how much the cancer cells expressed the oncogene HER2. In people, HER2-positive breast cancers are among the most resistant to standard chemotherapy.

Trastuzumab, sold under the name Herceptin, targets the HER2-positive tumor cells and triggers the immune system as well.

Responses were surprisingly different in animal models, the researchers report. In separate experiments, the team used the nanoparticles in two immune-deficient strains of mice engrafted with cells from five human breast cancer cell linestwo that were HER2 negative and three that were HER2 positive. When they studied the animals tumors 24 hours later, they noticed that nanoparticles coated with trastuzumab were found in a concentration two to five times greater than the plain nanoparticles in all types of tumors, regardless of whether they expressed the HER2 protein. They also found that the number of trastuzumab-coated nanoparticles was even greater (tenfold) in mice that had a fully functional immune system and were bearing mouse-derived tumors.

This led the researchers to suspect that the host animals immune systems were interacting strongly with the nanoparticles and playing a role in determining retention of the particles in the tumor, whether or not a drug was added.

More experiments, the team reports, revealed that tumor-associated immune cells were responsible for collecting the nanoparticles, and that mice bred with an intact immune system retained more of the trastuzumab-coated nanoparticles than mice bred without a fully functioning immune system.

In addition, inflammatory immune cells in the tumors immediate surroundings, or microenvironment, seized more of the coated nanoparticles than the plain ones. Finally, in a series of 30-day experiments, the researchers found that exposure to nanoparticles inhibited tumor growth three to five times more than controls, and increased CD8-positive cancer-killing T cells in the tumors.

Surprisingly, Ivkov notes, the anti-cancer immune activating response was equally effective with exposure to either plain or trastuzumab-coated nanoparticles. Mice with defective T cells did not show tumor growth inhibition. The investigators say this demonstrated that systemic exposure to nanoparticles can cause a systemic host immune response that leads to anti-cancer immune stimulation and does not require nanoparticles to be inside the tumors.

Overall, our work suggests that complex interdependencies exist between the host and tumor immune responses to nanoparticle exposure, Ivkov says. These results offer intriguing possibilities for exploring nanoparticle targeting of the tumor immune microenvironment. They also demonstrate exciting new potential to develop nanoparticles as platforms for cancer immune therapies.

The investigators say they also plan to study whether the same types of immune responses can be generated for noncancer conditions, such as infectious diseases.

Coronavirus pushes Folding@Homes crowdsourced molecular science to exaflop levels – TechCrunch

The long-running Folding@Home program to crowdsource the enormously complex task of solving molecular interactions has hit a major milestone as thousands of new users sign up to put their computers to work. The network now comprises an exaflop of computing power: 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 operations per second.

Folding@Home started some 20 years ago as a way then novel, and pioneered by the now-hibernating SETI@Home to break up computation-heavy problems and parcel them out to individuals for execution. It amounts to a crude supercomputer distributed over the globe, and while its not as effective as a real supercomputer in blasting through calculations, it can make short work of complex problems.

The problem in question being addressed by this tool (administrated by a group at Washington University in St. Louis) is that of protein folding. Proteins are one of the many chemical structures that make our biology work, and they range from small, relatively well-understood molecules to truly enormous ones.

The thing about proteins is that they change their shape depending on the conditions temperature, pH, the presence or absence of other molecules. This change in shape is often what makes them useful for example, a kinesin protein changes shape like a pair of legs taking steps to carry a payload across a cell. Another protein like an ion channel will open to let charged atoms through only if another protein is present, which fits into it like a key in a lock.

Some such changes, or convolutions, are well-documented, but most by far are totally unknown. But through robust simulation of the molecules and their surroundings we can discover new information about proteins that may lead to important discoveries. For example, what if you could show that once that ion channel is open, another protein could lock it that way for longer than usual, or close it quickly? Finding those kinds of opportunities is what this sort of molecular science is all about.

Unfortunately its also extremely computation-expensive. These inter- and intra-molecular interactions are the kind of thing supercomputers can grind away at endlessly to cover every possibility. Twenty years ago supercomputers were a lot rarer than they are today, so Folding@Home started as a way to do this sort of heavy computing load without buying a $500 million Cray setup.

The program has been chugging along the whole time, and likely got a boost when SETI@Home recommended it as an alternative to its many users. But the coronavirus crisis has made the idea of contributing ones resources to a greater cause highly attractive, and as such there has been a huge increase in users so much so that the servers are struggling to get problems out to everyones computers to solve.

The milestone its celebrating is the achievement of an exaflop of processing power, which is I believe a sextillion (a billion billion) operations per second. Exascale computing is the next goal of supercomputers; Intel and Cray are building exascale computers for the National Laboratories that are expected to come online in the next couple of years but the fastest supercomputers available today operate at a scale of hundreds of petaflops, or about half to a third the speed as an exaflop.

Naturally these two things are not directly comparable Folding@Home is marshaling an exaflops worth of computing power, but it is not operating as a single unit working on a single problem, as the exascale systems are built to. The exa- label is there to give a sense of scale.

Will this kind of analysis lead to coronavirus treatments? Perhaps later, but almost certainly not in the immediate future. Proteomics is basic research in that it is at heart about better understanding the world around (and within) us period.

COVID-19 (like Parkinsons, Alzheimers, ALS and others) isnt a single problem, but a large, poorly bounded set of unknowns; its proteome and related interactions are part of that set. The point isnt to stumble onto a magic bullet but to lay a foundation for understanding so that when we are evaluating potential solutions, we can pick the right one even 1% faster because we know that this molecule in that situation acts like so.

As the project noted in a blog post announcing the release of coronavirus-related work:

This initial wave of projects focuses on better understanding how these coronaviruses interact with the human ACE2 receptor required for viral entry into human host cells, and how researchers might be able to interfere with them through the design of new therapeutic antibodies or small molecules that might disrupt their interaction.

How a supercomputer network of 700,000 PCs is helping to find a Covid-19 cure – NS Tech

The race to find a coronavirus vaccine is on, with about 35 companies and academic institutions across the world working feverishly on the case. But Sars-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19, is a novel, as well as a large and complex structure. The process of discovering a vaccine is complemented and accelerated by building a solid ground layer in knowledge about the virus. One of the projects helping to plug the gaps in our understanding is Folding@home, based at Stanford University. Its a distributed computing project that links up the machines of citizen scientists across the world willing to donate excess computing resources from their devices to help run simulations of disease proteins at scale.

For the past 20 years, the project has been mapping disease proteins involved in Alzheimers and cancer, but in late February it began modelling the protein structures of Covid-19 too. This decision prompted the projects biggest ever spike in new volunteers signing up via downloadable software around 600,000 so far, putting it on track to reach one million total users. The network is now operating at an exaflop of computing power: 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 (a billion billion) operations per second.

Historically, vaccines contain enfeebled versions of the virus that trigger specific antibodies priming the human bodys immune system to react effectively to the real thing. But in the case of Covid-19, most research groups around the world are developing newer recombinant nucleic acid vaccines that contain scraps of the virus genetic code (DNA or RNA).

The ball was set rolling in mid-January when Chinese scientists published the full genome of the Covid-19 virus (all 29,903 nucleic bases). Scientists are able to use this information to single out sets of genes that correspond to specific proteins that make up the building blocks of the virus form essential information to formulating a vaccine. But this is only the beginning.

The proteins of Covid-19 are constantly shuffling and rearranging in response to their environment, and its these dynamical motions that Folding@homes molecular simulations are attempting to map. In a nutshell, this means simulating in a computer how each atom in a very large biomolecule wiggles and jiggles over time, says Vincent Voelz, associate professor in theory and computation at Temple University and a member of Folding@home. These movements indicate how the virus functions. As Voelz puts it, Covid-19 proteins are the nanoscale machines that the virus tricks an infected cell into making so it can propagate.

Of particular interest to Folding@home, and research groups investigating Covid-19 more generally, is the S-protein making up the spikes on the virus outer shell, that it uses to gain access to human cells. Folding@home has created a simulation of the spike protein, that is composed of three interlocking proteins, and a pocket that helps the virus bind to human cells and infect them.

The point of mapping proteins is to find out which parts of proteins the immune system might target, says Jim Naismith, professor of structural biology at the University of Oxford. In Covid-19, the spike protein is a particularly popular binding spot for human antibodies, meaning it could be key to developing an effective vaccine. Scientists are mapping all those epitopes [protein segments] where people are mounting good responses to them, and then theyll test those antibodies in trials, says Naismith.

Running computations to produce simulations of this type of biological puzzle is time and energy-intensive. Folding@homes distributed network of computers is able to run calculations with greater speed and efficiency than any single computer could. In effect, large calculations are broken down into smaller ones that are run concurrently on thousands of displaced machines. The power of Folding@homes distributed network is not directly comparable to one supercomputer, because the system is not operating as a single unit on a single problem. But if it was, it would be faster. The fastest supercomputers available today operate at a scale of hundreds of petaflops between a third and a half of the speed of an exaflop.

Folding@home isnt the only project directing vast quantities of computing power towards understanding Covid-19. In the US, a partnership including the US government, IBM, and others has began to grant promising Covid-19 projects access to 16 supercomputers. Summit, the worlds most powerful non-distributed computer system in the world, was tasked with identifying compounds that would be effective in binding to the spike proteins of the Covid-19 organism, thereby preventing the attachment of the virus to host cells. It came up with 77 matches.

Beyond brute computing force, artificial intelligence is also playing an increasingly important role in virus modelling. Traditionally, experiments to determine the structure have taken months or longer. But computational methods can provide a much speedier way to predict protein structures from amino acids sequences. In cases where the structure of a similar protein has already been experimentally defined, algorithms based on template modelling can provide accurate predictions of the protein structure. Googles DeepMind recently announced AlphaFold, a deep learning system that focuses on predicting protein structure accurately when no structures of similar proteins are available, called free modelling.

While Folding@homes work is not pitched directly at creating a vaccine, its useful for modern computational drug discovery, which relies on sampling the many possible conformations of the proteins, and modelling how drug molecules might bind to them. At present, there are not good experimental techniques that can probe these motions at the atomic scale that can be achieved with computational modelling, says Voelz.

Computational mapping complements structural mapping of the virus using laboratory techniques such as cryogenic electron microscopy. What you can do with computing is, if possible, use evolutionarily related proteins that we already know something about the architecture and the active site and then build a computing model using those, says Tom Blundell, biochemist and structural biologist at Cambridge University.

Folding@home has been able to go one further. Voelzs group at Temple University are partnering with researchers at the Diamond Light Source in the UK who have done groundbreaking work in solving over a thousand different crystal structures of the coronavirus main protease, and have discovered several drug fragments that bind to sites on the protein. Based on these initial fragment screening results, the computing power of Folding@home is being used to virtually screen a huge number of potential drug compounds including those from the COVID Moonshot project to prioritise which to synthesise and experimentally test.

In modern times, the advent of more intelligent computing technology means that processing power can be used to help with scientific research.

That research involves using simulations to analyse the make-up of proteins in the human body and how they "fold".

Misfolding proteins are often the cause for diseases likes Alzheimers, Parkinson's, various types of cancer, ALS and more.

Using technology to research these proteins allows scientists to more efficiently and more quickly develop drugs to help combat the issues.

This is particularly relevant at the moment with the Coronavirus pandemic.

The good news is, you can help with this and doing so is really simple too. All you need to do is get involved with Folding@home.

Folding@home is a distributed computing project run by Stanford University. The aim of the project is to examine how proteins fold and it does this using spare computing power.

We first wrote about folding@home in 2007, but with rising concern about coronavirus - and confirmation of the project's involvement in researching COVID-19 - now is a great time to revisit this project and lend some support.

The idea behind the project is around shared computing power.

Lots of people have computers and a lot of the time those computers aren't doing anything - they're just sitting around with spare computational power. Folding@home takes advantage of that spare power to put it to a good cause - researching various diseases.

It's a very technical thing - both in terms of how a distributed computing project works and investigating folding proteins, but fortunately, you don't have to understand either of those things to lend your support, because it all happens in the background.

The idea is that when there are millions of computers doing a little bit of work in the background, the project will have greater computational power at its disposal, which is a great benefit to researchers.

To help, you just need to download the software to your computer and set it to run. The program then downloads "work units" and processes them to send the data back.

Generally, you'll still find you're able to use your computer as you normally would without any hassle, but while you work, play, stream or browse, you'll be helping fight disease.

All you have to do is head over to the folding@home website and you can download the software for whatever platform you're on. You'll install a small programme that will connect to the back to the project and then start churning data.

You can download Folding@home for Windows, Mac or Linux machines, so whatever you're using it's easy to get started.

It's also free to download, so it'll cost you nothing to do your part.

The installation process is really simple though. Download the software, install it, set up an identity and start folding.

You can open Folding@homein a browser to see how you're doing. You also have the option to adjust how much processing power the software is using. If you're not using your computer you could set it to "full" to do the most work or "light" if you're doing something more intensive and need to dial back the folding for a bit.

The benefits of Folding@homeare fairly straightforward. With very little technical knowledge you can set up your computer to help find cures for disease.

The more people that get involved, the more processing power there is to simulate the protein folding and the faster the results will be achieved.

This system also means that the organisation doesn't need to pay for supercomputers as everyone around the world is lending a hand.

When running Folding@home,it is possible to choose a project. This means you can dedicate your processing power to support fighting a particular disease. You can choose from Alzheimer's, Cancer, Huntington's, Parkinson's or any disease.

There is no current way to select Coronavirus as a disease to fight, but the team has said selecting any disease will still help with the research into the pandemic.

When you starting using the software you'll see you'll slowly accumulate points. These points are designed to encourage friendly competition between you, your friends and other people online.

Points are calculated based on the work units you complete and the points vary depending on the complexity of those work units. Some of the work involves studying small proteins, others are on more complex proteins and so the points awarded will varying depending on that.

You can also join a team in order to help climb a stats ladder to compete for the position of the best team. The stats of the teams are viewable here. Though you don't need to join a team and can fold anonymously if you'd prefer.

If you'd rather be part of a group effort, you can join a team easily from the web control interface that opens in a browser.

Under "I'm folding as" you'll find a link to "change identity". If you click that you'll see a pop-up that lets you choose a name and a team.

To join a team you need to know the team's number. You can find the team numbers from the stats page.

Alternatively, you can create your own team by filling out this simple form. Once you've set your team up, make a note of the number and get your friends to join in too to help do their part.

Folding@home is designedto be safe. It's been carefully tested and the servers for it are behind high-security firewalls to keep everything safe and secure. You won't have any problems running this software on your computer.

The folding@home team has confirmed that it is supporting researchers at Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York City to develop treatments for COVID-19. As part of an open science approach, findings are shared with other researchers, with the global goal of developing drugs or therapies to combat the coronavirus.

This video shows the Folding@homesimulations of the COVID-19 protein. It's this sort of simulation that helps researchers understand what's happening with the proteins and how they're infecting human cells.

That data could then be used to develop ways to block the virus in the first place.

The worldwide issues with COVID-19 has lead to more and more people using Folding@home. That, in turn, has lead to a massive increase in processing power for the project. The project has now broken theexaFLOP barrier meaning it's more powerful than even the most powerful supercomputer. This also means it's carrying out over1,000,000,000,000,000,000 operations per second.

Dr Greg Bowman has recently revealed that the number of people folding has reached almost five times the amount as the number before the pandemic outbreak.

Folding@home is a distributed computing project used to simulate protein folding. The project, which is available for free to anyone, asks users to install software on a computer so it can leverage the user's processing power to calculate data. It's something like Bitcoin mining except it can save lives. In simple terms, the data itself involves calculating all the ways a protein molecule could move over time because that movement impacts the shape of the molecule, and that shape has a strong bearing on how the molecule will ultimately function. Charting these movements requires a staggering number of calculations (literally billions), so Folding@home users are taking on some of that workload. The Folding@home project has been used in cancer research going back to the advent of broadband internet access, and it has also aided in research on Ebola: it recently led to the discovery of an unexpected way to treat Ebola with drugs, which was previously considered impossible. Now that Folding@home has been unleashed on COVID-19, its creators have pushed for the many PC owners spending time at home due to social distancing to step up and lend their computing resources to the project. Step up they have, as the Folding@home Twitter account recently revealed the project has "crossed the exaFLOP barrier". This feat of computing means they've reached enough computing power to calculate 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 (that's one quintillion) floating-point operations per second, which, according to a reply on Twitter, is more power than exists in the top 103 supercomputers on Earth combined.

This is a staggering feat considering the immense power required to do large-scale FLOP calculations for those familiar with the term "teraflop", an exaflop is one million teraflops. It's also a great sign of comradery amongst us Earthlings. Folding@home is an easy process to start, it runs relatively unobtrusively, and it can even be a little fun, but it's still a surprise to see so many people taking the effort to help with the project.

Throughout this process, tech enthusiasts and tech brands in the PC space have taken strides to promote Folding@home and get more people on board. Companies like Nvidia are sharing Folding@home leaderboards to drive friendly competition and acknowledge individual efforts. The combination of this new social media word of mouth and people's strong desire to help end the coronavirus are the primary factors for the project's recent explosion of popularity, and hopefully, this trend continues. Staying in shape or just getting into shape in the first place is hard work. That's why we make new years' resolutions, sign up for gym memberships and healthy meal kit delivery services and then buy smart scales to track our weight loss trajectory. But one of the most powerful tools in your fitness arsenal actually goes on your wrist. Fitness trackers are the coaches, cheerleaders, reminders and scorecards that keep us on trackevery day.

Not all fitness trackers are the same, and choosing the right one is important, since not all are designed to accommodate the kinds of exercise you want to do, and some have extra features, like smartphone notifications and heart rate tracking.

There are a lot of fitness bands on the market many from Fitbit, the company that virtually invented the fitness tracker though there are a lot of other companies which make great health and fitness wearables as well. If youre shopping for a fitness band, the good news is that most devices cover the basics pretty well. With a few exceptions, virtually all of them count steps, calories, distance and other indications of your health and activity level.

But not all activity trackers are the same. When putting this list together, we looked for activity trackers that also had heart rate monitors, since thats a critical feature for accurately monitoring your activity level. Some devices do a better job with sleep tracking than others, and we tried to focus on models that offered richer sleep information. Devices that can sense barometric pressure can also track stairs, while many waterproof models can track swimming. Not everyone needs features like that, but we made sure to include a few models with those abilities.

Is the ability to get notifications from your smartphone important to you? Most fitness trackers have some smartphone features like notifications, but you might want a tracker that actually looks and works like a smartwatch, so we included a couple of those in the list as well.

And last but not least, with one exception the Apple Watch we disregarded fitness trackers that have a battery life under about three days, since no one wants to charge their wearables that often. Like any mobile device, the longer your battery life, the better, and some of the devices on this list can last a week or more.

Not all fitness trackers need to cost a small fortune. While most fitness devices start over $100 and prices can easily climb as high as $300, the Amazfit Bip while not bearing the most professional or reassuring name is a solid, dependable and surprisingly feature-laden budget fitness tracker. Its inexpensive enough that it almost qualifies as an impulse purchase.

Despite the low price, its a smartwatch with a wealth of fitness tracking capabilities. First of all, unlike most trackers and smartwatches, it has an always-on color display (thanks to a very low-power e-ink screen), which means you can actually use it as a watch without undue compromises. And the battery life can be measured in weeks, not days or (in the case of Apple) hours. You can expect to get between three and four weeks out of the watch between every charge even more than a month if you disable some power-hungry features you dont need.

As long as youre not expecting a super polished, premium experience, the Bip has a lot to offer. It does all the basic fitness tracking, such as steps, distance, sleep monitoring, heart rate and more. Unlike most fitness trackers, it includes GPS so it can track outdoor exercises without relying on your phone at all leave it home when you work out.

It also gets notifications from your phone, so you can monitor your texts and calendar appointments from your wrist just like with other trackers. But there are some compromises. When it comes to notifications, theyre not actionable, so to reply to a text, youll need to reach for your phone. And when it comes to fitness, theres a fairly narrow menu of trackable exercises, and swimming is not on it (the Bip is water-resistant, not waterproof, so its best not to submerge it for very long anyway).

Obviously, the Bip is a mixed bag, but its one of the few budget trackers that includes an always-on display, heart rate monitoring, and GPS.

The latest edition of the Apple Watch, called the Series 5, is a fairly incremental update from the Series 4, which many Apple users remain happy with and havent found the need to upgrade from. That said, the Apple Watch Series 5 is the first model from Apple ever to offer an always-on display, which makes it a compelling option. It does this without reducing the battery life you still get 18 hours or more between charges.

The fact that no Apple Watch, not even the new Series 5, can last for more than a full day without a recharge, means that it has no sleep tracking built in. Thats a serious disadvantage. Most other fitness trackers, and virtually all Fitbit models in particular, can sleep track. (If you really want to force your Apple Watch to monitor your sleep habits, there are third-party apps out there you can install.)

But if you can get past the lack of sleep tracking, youll be rewarded with a smartwatch that is very health and fitness conscious. It features female health-tracking, a full-time heart rate monitor, is waterproof for swim tracking and can track stairs (so your trips up and down flights of stairs dont go to waste). The watch can even perform an ECG (electrocardiogram) on demand. The Apple Watch Series 5 also recognizes a slew of exercises and will start tracking them semi-automatically. Unlike Fitbit, which just works, Apple pops a notification on the watch when it senses a workout and asks you to allow it to start tracking. Likewise, its not always good at knowing when your exercise is over, and youll need to end the session manually most of the time. But it does work, after a fashion, and thats something Apple could conceivably improve with software updates.

Want to try an Apple Watch but dont want to spend over $400 on the Series 5? You can get all of these features except the always-on display with a much less expensive Apple Watch Series 4.

Most fitness trackers are made for adults, and thats exactly what youd expect. But not everyone is a grownup what if you are looking for a simple fitness tracker for your kids? The Fitbit Ace 2 is made with children age six and older in mind. Not only is this a more affordable fitness band, but it disposes of features that kids dont need.

The Ace 2 doesnt have the ability to do cardio, calorie or heart rate tracking for example. Instead, it keeps things simple, with activity tracking that is limited to a step count and log of active minutes. It doesnt track specific exercises, advanced sleep-tracking (though it does monitor the time slept), female health tracking or any sort of advanced insights. Thats because the goal here isnt for a nine-year-old to stick to a fitness or weight loss plan. Its to reward your kids for running around outside.

To that end, the Ace 2 is rugged more so than most adult fitness trackers and has a five-day battery life. And if your kids like the Ace 2, they might develop healthy lifestyle habits early and eventually graduate to a more adult fitness tracker.

Fitbits Charge 3 looks like a lot of other fitness trackers; its a wristband with a rectangular display. The Charge 3 straddles the line between a band and a smartwatch in size, though if youre looking for a tracker with a somewhat oversized display, this might be right for you. The Charge 3 makes good use of the display with a sharp, monochrome screen. It shows time and basic fitness data, as well as getting notifications from your phone. Not only can you accept and reject calls on the Charge 3, but you can see texts and calendar alerts as well. You can also send Quick Replies short, custom and pre-configured messages without touching your phone.

But the Charge 3 is first and foremost a fi
tness tracker. It keeps track of all the basics like steps and distance, and it also recognizes when youre starting to exercise and tracks that for you as well. Its water-resistant and tracks swimming. If youre a runner, youll appreciate a feature that pauses tracking when you briefly stop running. That means stopping at a traffic light doesnt ruin your stats. Theres also a built-in heart rate sensor, which increases the fidelity of your fitness tracking.

If you wear the Charge 3 to bed, youll be rewarded with some fairly in-depth sleep tracking. The tracker also has female health tracking capabilities and does all this for about a full week between charges.

When you think about a fitness tracker, odds are good that you imagine something a lot like the Fitbit Inspire HR. It does all the things most people look for in a fitness tracker it counts steps, distance moved, and has some sleep tracking features as well. In addition, it automatically recognizes when youre doing a lot of common exercises, and can track that as well. (This model is waterproof and can track swimming.) The HR stands for heart rate and has a full-time continuous heart rate monitor built in as well. With a great price, a five-day battery life, and the ability to do most activity-related tasks, this might be the best choice for a lot of people.

The Fitbit Inspire HR has a fairly simple, understated design, which is unlikely to get in the way of your clothing choices. It comes in black and a small handful of more vibrate colors. Itll behave as a watch, after a fashion it doesnt have an always-on display, but the small display can show the time and fitness info, as well as receive notifications from your phone. So not only can you monitor your fitness data on the Inspire, but you can see the time, incoming text messages, and calls, and calendar alerts as well. No, its not a complete smartwatch, but it does most of the most common things youd look for on your wrist.

The Fitbit Ionic is a good choice for a fitness tracker if you would like to frequently leave your phone at home its a full-featured smartwatch and duplicates a lot of things youd ordinarily do with an iPhone or Android device, and it does it with a five-day battery life.

Because this is a Fitbit fitness tracker, you can expect it to do all the usual fitness tracking thats a given. It tracks steps and distance, as well as sleep tracking, automatic exercise detection, and thanks to a waterproof design, swim tracking as well. Thanks to the larger watch-like display, the Ionic can also help you through exercise sessions with on-screen workouts.

The Ionic is Fitbits top-of-the-line fitness tracker and is priced to match that status, but it also has a few features you generally wont find in many other devices. It has built-in GPS, for example. If youre a runner, you can leave your smartphone at home and the Ionic can accurately track your route all by itself. Its missing a few things as well, though. The Fitbit Versa 2, a similar but less-well-equipped smartwatch, has built-in Alexa voice assistance and an always-on display. Weirdly, both of those features are missing from this tracker.

While many fitness trackers are good all-around health and fitness devices, dedicated runners might want to lean into a device thats optimized for their particular sport of choice. Garmins Forerunner 245 is just such a fitness tracker. Shaped like a traditional round-faced wristwatch, its a GPS watch that has a deep and rich set of fitness tracking features.

First impressions are great. The Forerunner 245 has a bright, sharp and attractive display with a perfectly round face theres no notch or cutout like some smartwatches resort to. And its quite thin and light, making it feel more like a traditional watch than a high-tech device strapped to your wrist.

The Forerunner 245 automatically tracks a wealth of running and running-adjacent activities. Start to run, jump on a treadmill, cycle, row, or use an elliptical or stair stepper, and itll start to track the action. It also tracks yoga, walking, and a handful of other activities. Its also waterproof and can track swimming. Of course, this is a GPS watch, so theres no need to carry your phone with you when exercising.

And since you can leave your phone at home, Garmin added music support as well you can store about 500 songs (thats around 3.5GB of storage) on board, or play streaming audio through services like Spotify, Pandora or Deezer. Just connect a set of Bluetooth earbuds and youre in business.

Youll get about a week of use out of the Forerunner between charges, which means you can wear this tracker to bed. Yes, it has some cursory sleep tracking features, but if that feature is important to you, you might be better off with a Fitbit, which really does sleep tracking well.

You might think that Fitbit has the market sewn up on wrist-worn fitness trackers, and youd be mostly right that company has an extensive line of trackers at virtually every price point, which seems to leave very little air for other companies to breathe. But while Fitbit might be synonymous with fitness tracking in the minds of many people, companies like Garmin offer their own line of trackers, and some are excellent choices for managing your health and fitness.

The Garmin Vivosmart 4 is the latest version of the companys successful wrist-worn tracker, and it tracks everything youd expect it to, including steps and distance, as well as an estimate of your calories burned throughout the day. Theres also a built-in heart rate monitor and sleep tracking.

The display is a little smaller than what youll find on many trackers, but its framed with a stylish aluminum bezel, which adds a chic look to the device that is appealing for both men and women few fitness devices that the effort to look like anything other than a hunk of plastic.

You get about a full week of battery life out of each charge, and the Vivosmart 4 goes above and beyond with the ability to track a large array of exercises not just the ordinary stuff like biking, running, and treadmill, but pretty unusual activities like BMX, motocross, rafting and hang gliding. Thats right hang gliding. Overall, the Vivosmart 4 tracks a greater range of activities and records more in-depth data than most fitness trackers on the market, making this a superb choice for people who are deeply invested in quantifying themselves and their activities.

Some fitness trackers, like Fitbit models, are designed to be completely phone-agnostic. The Apple Watch is designed exclusively for iPhone owners (as you would expect). And then there are models like the Samsung Galaxy Fit, which given the Samsung branding, you might expect to work only with Android. But youd be wrong; this fitness tracker works with both Android and iOS.

In fact, the Galaxy fit doesnt even run the Android operating system. Instead, its powered by Samsungs Real Time OS, though that will hardly matter very much in day-to-day operations. Still, the energy-efficient OS is what helps the Galaxy Fit get a full week of battery life between charges.

The tracker itself is a band-style device that you wear on your wrist like the Inspire HR or Charge 3 from Fitbit. It has a color AMOLED display a little on the small side, but plenty large enough to show fitness stats, and the color display looks nice compared to other trackers that are monochrome.

As youd expect from a fitness tracker, it handles all the basic stats and can recognize and start tracking a number of exercises as well, though its often slow on the uptake, not unlike the Apple Watch 5, which also can take some time to figure out what youre doing. The Galaxy Fit is waterproof and can track swim exercises as well.

If you wear the Galaxy Fit to bed, itll do detailed sleep tracking that includes the time you fell asleep and woke, along with an analysis of your sleep stages. One unique feature: The Fit also tracks your stress. A stress widget displays your stress level throughout the day, which could be helpful
if you are trying to reduce your blood pressure and stop sweating the small stuff.

One weirdly annoying aspect of the Galaxy Fit is that the phone experience is weirdly disjointed. It relies on a pair of apps one to manage the tracker itself, and another fitness app similar to the Fitbit fitness app.

American Heart Association offers tips to maintain healthy at-home routine – KRQE News 13

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (FOX) With the evolving impact of the coronavirus in communities across the country, the public is facing new challenges that are preventing people from getting to school, stores, the gym, and even staying healthy at home. David Romero spoke with the executive director of the American Heart Association, Sherri Wells to discuss resources and tips on how to maintain a healthy lifestyle at home.

Sherri encourages people to set a routine and to include physical activity in that routine. Activities such as jumping jacks, walking in place, and squats will allow you to stay active while remaining at home.

A lot of great staple foods such as nuts and grains can be found in your pantry. Believe it or not, frozen vegetables are a really good healthy resource, said Sherri. Canned vegetables, canned and dried fruits, whole-grain breads and tortillas, and nuts and seeds are also foods that can be easy and healthy snacks.

Sherri explains that individuals with heart disease are at a higher risk of getting COVID-19. What were seeing is that right now, across our nation there are 121 million people with heart-type situations. And so people with heart disease are about 48% of the most vulnerable individuals who are more likely to either contract the virus or have a harder time surviving it, said Sherri.

These individuals are encouraged to obey social distancing protocols and to remain at home. If you believe you have symptoms of COVID-19, you are asked to first call the coronavirus hotline at 1-855-600-3453 to be screened.

The New Mexico Department of Health also offers an online self-screening tool. NMDOH also provides available COVID-19 testing sites.

The American Heart Association provides additional resources for healthy living during the COVID-19 outbreak.

First and foremost, know that your entire YMCA community is thinking of you, your families, and our community-at-large. We hope you are all staying safe and healthy, and that you're managing as well as you can under the current circumstances. While we may not be gathering in person for the time being, we are together in spirit and want to help support our community during this strange and difficult time. Based on the feedback from the community, we have begun to implement an action plan that goes beyond our typical YMCA programming and service delivery system. We are honored and excited to serve in the following capacity:

Wallingford Community Library - Folks need to pass the time away and without access to our great public library, staff have found a way to repurpose members' donations as another resident's treasure! Books are located on the front porch of our Rotary Teen Center, 55 S. Main St., Wallingford, right next door to our East Side Branch. Take a book or leave one!

Virtual Y - Without access to our highly used facilities, the need for healthy lifestyle and youth development resources during this difficult time is highlighted more than ever. Y staff have developed online workout routines, educational resources, family and kid activities for all to enjoy.

Story Time & Virtual Classroom - Our littlest ones are especially impacted by the drastic changes in our day to day lifestyles. The daily Early Childcare opportunities they used to know have now been replaced by virtual "Facebook Live" learning activities provided by the friendly faces of our YMCA staff.

Calls to members and Coffee & Conversations - Not only does the community miss being informed, but they miss the social interaction they had when the YMCA facilities were open. YMCA staff have responded by making calls to members, especially those at high at risk, during this public health crisis. We have also launched an "open mic" online conversation with Y leadership and the community.

Action items in the works

Emergency Childcare Services - As we speak, Y staff are working hard with our local hospital partners and the Office of Early Childcare to determine the need of childcare services for our health care providers. These professionals will be needed the most during this epidemic and if there is a need, the YMCA can help by taking care of their children; infants, toddlers, preschool and school age, to allow them the confidence to do their jobs in caring for the COVID-19 patients.

Blood Drives - Another high demand commodity is blood donations. Due to facilities being closed down, blood supplies are at an all-time low. The YMCA has offered both of our locations to help provide a host draw station to address that demand. Stay tuned for blood drive dates.

5 Steps to Rebuild Your Fit and Healthy Lifestyle During the COVID-19 Outbreak – STACK News

With large-scale shutdowns happening across the United States, the opportunities to train at gyms are disappearing. While it's important that we adhere to social distancing and avoid areas where viruses can spread, many of us are trying to find ways to continue our health and fitness routines despite the rapid change.

The biggest challenge for me has been replacing a fully functioning gym with a pair of 10-pound weights, the couch and the family pet. Many of us are struggling to find a replacement for our gym routine leading to negative effects both physically and psychologically. Goals are getting crushed, training programs are getting tossed aside and people are growing frustrated with their bodyweight-only programs at home. Where did the fun go?

I love that people are taking their health and fitness so seriously, as gyms start providing online training programs by the truckload, people are willing to try anything and everything to stay consistent. The gym has become the church of the millennial generation, with family and friends going together every week. With goals being accomplished and friends being made at gyms across America, it makes sense that we are struggling to replace it in the wake of this nationwide shutdown.

In the sea of confusion that is the fitness industry right now, these are a few ideas to keep in mind when realigning our training programs. These ideas are part of an effort to help find the fun factor that comes with training consistently that many of us have found over the years at our local gyms.

This can not be overstated. Some of us enjoy going to the gym and working out with Buckcherry screaming in our ear while others enjoy the conversations that pop up between sets. Regardless of this, the sense of community that comes when we walk into the gym is not going to be there when we search YouTube search for the newest bodyweight workout of the day. It will take effort for us to have a group to train with. It may be through a social media site, the services that your gym is offering or simply reaching out to people you normally see at the gym. Building a community around you will help both your training goals and your psyche as we go through these difficult times.

We enjoy success. The hard truth is that if our goal was to improve our Deadlift by 50 pounds over the next few months, the odds of that happening if we have no access to a barbell are not great. They're terrible actually. As opposed to putting our goals on hold and sitting in the dark waiting for the sun to come up, let's pursue something different, shall we?

This could be taking the aforementioned Deadlift goal and adjusting it to a bodyweight goal. It could mean improving our mile time or a Push-Up repetition max. If we have a goal to pursue that is plausible given our access to equipment, we have a chance to reach it and find new goals, which means more fun training time. None of us like failing, so it's a good time to readjust our expectations to the situation at hand. Scaling our training goals helps us stay challenged but avoids the extremes of boredom and total failure anxiety.

It's fair to say that we may not be getting as many steps in our day if we aren't going outside, to work, to the store or anywhere other than the bathroom. By logging our time training we can notice and name the time that we are taking to prioritize our health. Reward those small victories like a 20-minute walk or 15 minutes of yoga. At the end of the day as we get blasted by the most recent news, it'll be nice to look back and remember the minutes that we put ourselves first. Intrinsic motivation stems from enjoyment and enjoyment stems from success. If we are to stay motivated during these tough times, logging every success we have can go a long way.

The best ways that I've found for logging would be through a simple written journal, an online training platform or in a visible place like the calendar or whiteboard.

We are all smart enough to realize this. Turn off the news, email, social media and all other forms of distraction during training unless they are being utilized to accomplish building a community.

We may not hit our training goals this month and we need to be prepared for that. I've seen physique competitors pulling out of cancelled competitions, professional baseball players struggling to find a place to train and local parents forgetting about their health and fitness as they care for little ones at home. This is no time to be hard on ourselves and demand more. We can enjoy the successes that we have and find patience if our efforts fall short of our goals.

This is an unprecedented challenge for many of us. Prioritizing our health and fitness may still be a long way off. When we are ready I hope these few ideas help create the community and enjoyment that we all have come to expect from our training routines.

Third Couch to 5K event begins Aug. 23 | Health – Tullahoma News and Guardian

The citys Get Fit! Tullahoma Committee has partnered with the Mach Tenn Running Club for the third annual Couch to 5K (C25K) challenge, which begins Aug. 23.

This group training and exercise program does not require any running experience, according to organizers. It is designed to encourage, motivate and challenge the individual to compete with his or her peers.

Those who sign up for the challenge will meet at Frazier McEwen Park each Tuesday at 6 p.m. beginning Aug. 23 with the goal of running the Jack Dash 5K on Oct. 24 in Lynchburg,

No prior running experience required. Runners are asked to pay the $25 entry fee for the 3.1 mile Jack Dash, which is the goal of the program.

According to the Robert Woods Johnson Foundation County Health Rankings, Coffee County is ranked 72nd out of 95 counties in the percentage of adults who report a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or more. The U.S. average is 28 percent, compared to Coffee County at 35.6 percent.

This is an alarming statistic, and what the Get Fit! Tullahoma initiative is trying to reverse, said Tullahoma Parks and Recreation Department Director Frances Samples. There are many people in our community working to make us healthier. The Mach Tenn Running Club is just one example.

This is a life-changing program Tullahoma Parks and Recreation is making available to many people in partnership with the Mach Tenn Running Club.

Diabetes impacts many people in Coffee County and it is not a change people can live with, but this event is to encourage people to take the first steps toward a healthier lifestyle.

This is going to be a fun adventure and a thrill to complete the Jack Dash. said C25K program director Kim Childress. We are excited that Get Fit! Tullahoma has partnered and challenges each runner to finish the Jack Dash 5k on Oct. 24.

The C25K is only a part of a healthy lifestyle, but we believe if you complete the challenge, you will be a different person than you were before.

Health to be top of mind for China’s beauty product consumers – Warc

Beauty products that stress their health credentials will be winners among Chinese consumers as they emerge from the current lockdown.

According to a new study from Euromonitor, this shift in attitude will be a direct response to the COVID-19 crisis, Cosmetics Design Asia reported.

Chinas economy has been badly mauled by the virus outbreak and colour cosmetics and fragrances are no exception, with sales down as people work from home and avoid going out to socialise.

Last year, the beauty and personal care sector was worth in the order of $66.25bn, with a compound annual growth rate of 9% over the last five years. But, while skincare and toiletry sales have been hit, Euromonitor forecasts the downturn will be short-lived and the sector quick to recover once the crisis abates.

Although negatively impacted during the epidemic period, basic skin care products and toiletries may only witness a small degree of turbulence throughout the year, as these products see more rigid demand, hence sales could rebound quickly after the quarantine period, said Connie Zhou, head of Euromonitor research in Shanghai.

Other lines in the sector have experienced massive growth, of course, with demand for anti-bacterial soap and hand sanitisers soaring as consumers seek to protect themselves from the virus by practising hand hygiene.

Local skin care brands, like Inoherb and Chando, have responded by producing sanitising products, Zhou noted.

Longer term, the Euromonitor report says that the general shift by consumers towards health and hygiene will continue.

Zhou calls this the healthy beauty trend and believes it will be shown in numerous ways within the beauty and personal care sector. Brands may focus on healthy ingredients, for example, as well as products that suggest a healthy lifestyle with beauty as part of that lifestyle.

Beyond this change of emphasis, Zhou believes that the growth of online sales in the sector is here to stay. Many consumers have switched to shopping online to overcome lockdown restrictions.

Online sales already play a crucial role in beauty and personal care product sales in China, now accounting for 30% of sales by value for skin care, and 38% for colour cosmetics last year, reports CosmeticsDesign-Asia.com. Euromonitor predicts COVID-19 will have the effect of increasing digital innovation, especially in the luxury sector.

The Quarantine 15: How to stay active and avoid unintentional weight gain while stuck at home – oregonlive.com

A new phrase has increasingly popped up on social media during the last few weeks: The Quarantine 15.

Instead of putting on a few extra pounds while off at college, aka The Freshman 15, people are now concerned about gaining weight during the ongoing coronavirus crisis as they find themselves sitting around more, stress eating and snacking out of boredom while holed up inside their homes.

Dietitians and health experts have the same concerns. As people adjust to social distancing measures and stress levels spike, they recognize that unintentional weight gain could follow.

We are sitting a lot and we may not be burning as many calories as we would be if we were going into the office. We dont have that kind of unintentional movement that we have become so dependent upon, said Diane Stadler, a licensed dietician and associate professor of medicine at Oregon Health and Science University. On top of that, were eating because were bored or were getting up just to do something and we walk past food thats readily available. I think we have to be really cautious about what that is going to lead to in terms of unintentional weight gain.

So, how do we avoid that unintentional weight gain while homebound? Dietitians and health experts say its about making a conscious effort to maintain routines, get regular exercise, and make smart choices at the grocery store and in the kitchen.

MAINTAIN YOUR ROUTINE

While it might be a lot easier to sleep in late, lounge around in pajamas and binge watch Netflix while youre stuck at home over the coming weeks, experts say that it is important to try to maintain a similar routine to the one you had before the coronavirus upended our lives.

Yes, you may no longer be going into the office or dropping kids off at school, but you can still create some structure in your daily life by setting an alarm and following your regular morning routine.

Maintaining structure around meals is especially important.

I think it is important to schedule what youre going to eat, Stadler said. If you are the type of person that historically woke up at 6 a.m., had coffee, had something to eat, were out the door at 7:15 and didnt eat anything else until 12 p.m., then we have to maintain that same type of schedule. Otherwise, the risk of consuming food kind of indiscriminately just because its available and we have the time becomes a potential problem.

People often turn to food at times of heightened stress because it offers immediate gratification, but sticking to a routine can help limit that stress eating. Psychologists say that maintaining a routine is one of the easiest and more important ways to manage stress and anxiety, which is key to both mental and physical health.

I certainly think that there are many people for whom their diet and their stress level have a relationship, said Jamie Beckerman, a cardiologist and the medical director of Providence Heart Institutes Cardiac Prevention and Wellness clinic. There is a lot of data from disasters in the past that suggest that there are spikes in heart attacks and heart disease events during times of increased stress because this is a more prolonged form of stress.

MAKE SMART DECISIONS AT THE GROCERY STORE

People have unsurprisingly tried to stock up on nonperishable foods during the coronavirus outbreak in an attempt to avoid extra trips to the grocery store. But just because youre buying foods that have longer shelf lives doesnt mean that they cant be healthy.

Stadler said that it was often better to buy frozen meats and vegetables over canned products that might be higher in sodium. If you dont have freezer space, she said that was best to look for canned products that are lower in sodium. When it comes to canned beans, grocery stores will often place the lower and higher sodium options next to each other.

And while it might be tempting to stock up on comfort foods, caffeinated drinks and alcohol to kick the boredom at home, it can be hard to maintain a healthy lifestyle and sleep schedule when you are homebound and those items are readily available.

I think people under stress, the risk of people consuming alcohol at higher rates is high and likely, Stadler said. There are a lot of calories that come with consuming alcoholic beverages and that can exacerbate not only weight gain, but just depressed mood.

Beckerman recommends purchasing whole foods and using the added time at home to try out new nutritious recipes, rather than snacking on processed food. With schools closed, he said this was a good time to get kids involved in meal prep as well. If people are instead opting to order food for delivery or pickup, its important to be mindful of portion sizes and ingredients, Stadler said.

Think about whether or not that meal that you actually ordered could be something that you could separate into two or three different meals, Stadler said. Always make sure you are purchasing a salad or vegetables to go along with a meal and savor the fresh produce you have access to.

FIND TIME FOR EXERCISE

Carving out time for exercise is as important as ever both to prevent unintentional weight gain and to manage stress.

Beckerman recommends setting aside some portion of your day for exercise, whether thats running through an intense home workout or doing something as simple as walking around your block or house. Exercise reduces stress and can lead to better sleep, which in turn makes it easier to cut down on mindless and emotional eating, Beckerman said.

People that are active, and that might mean a casual walk up and down the street after dinner, that is enough to kind of flip on the switches that make our bodies healthier, Beckerman said. Even if you never lift a weight or download an app or break a sweat, you can promote a very healthy environment in your body just by walking for 30 minutes a day.

While people may no longer have access to their local gyms, that shouldnt prevent them from exercising. Nike has stopped charging subscription fees for its training club premium service, which offers workout videos and training programs. Many national and local fitness clubs and yoga studios have started offering courses online as well.

While household items, such as water jugs, can be used as weights, there are also plenty of ways to stay active without any form of equipment or app. Even taking time to stand up and walk around the house every hour can have both mental and physical health benefits during this stressful time.

"We cant let ourselves get into that mindless routine of either eating the wrong things or not doing the activities that we would normally do, Stadler said. I think we need to get those activities on our calendar and we have to be true to them, so we dont let other activities invade that time when its on our schedules. In doing that, were getting up, were moving, were not sitting, were not just looking at a screen the whole day.

In a global survey, many health experts have highlighted the difference between hard water and soft water to help people lead a healthy lifestyle. Depending on geography, people get to make use of hard water or soft water in their daily routine but most of them dont have any knowledge about the impacts of both types of water. To spread awareness among people, they highlighted the adverse impact of hard water on skin, appliances, and fabrics.

The unnamed health experts have highlighted that people should use soft water instead of hard water for it is not just good for skin but it also helps a person save a lot of money on detergents. They said that hard water contains dissolved minerals such as calcium and magnesium which restrict detergents and soaps to lather well. According to health experts, using soft water can help a person keep his skin smoother, softer and cleaner. In addition to this, it also avoids a person developing any other skin or hair issue.

While revealing their views on the subject, hard water vs soft water, they said that it is important on the part of every person to install a water softener in his house. Further, they added that it is extremely important for those people who live in a geographical region where they receive only hard water. By making use of soft water, they cannot just save a huge sum of money on their detergents but they can also keep their clothes in good condition.

Coalition aims to build a healthier community in UP’s Kinross Township – Model D

Trying to promote physical activity in Kinross Charter Township is a path littered with hurdles. The rural community about 20 miles south of Sault Ste. Marie has just one recreation center, which is not open on weekends. The community of about 6,000 lacks sidewalks, and its not safe to walk along snow-covered streets in the winter. Snowshoe and cross-country ski trails exist in the region, but they're not in proximity to residential areas. Transportation can be a problem.

Its hard in this area to get out and be active in the winter. Im a fairly active person and its hard for me. Its so cold and theres so much snow on the ground, says Kathryn Hills, LifeSPAN nutrition facilitator for the Eastern Upper Peninsula Intermediate School District (EUPISD).

However, the EUPISD and other partners are working to promote physical activity and other healthy choices in the community through the Kinross Building a Healthy Community Coalition (BHCC). The BHCC was launched by the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians and has been embraced by the EUPISD and other community organizations.

With funding from Michigan Fitness Foundation's (MFF) Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP-Ed) grant, EUPISD is collaborating with community groups to help improve nutrition, health, and physical activity in the area. SNAP-Ed is an education program of the U.S. Department of Agriculture that teaches people eligible for SNAP how to live healthier lives. As a State Implementing Agency for the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, MFF offers competitive grant funding for local and regional organizations to conduct SNAP-Ed programming throughout Michigan.

One of our goals is improving and promoting physical activity, Hills says. Thats one thing we bring to the BHCC. Our programming starts in the classroom with nutrition education.

EUPISDs SNAP-Ed programs include LifeSPAN, which promotes healthy food education through classroom lessons. Nutrition education focuses on students in kindergarten through fifth grade and includes schools throughout the ISD. The curriculum includes lessons in nutrition, experiences with fresh fruits and vegetables, reading relevant books, and physical activity.

Hills says their SNAP-Ed programs are having a positive impact on the community.

I hear from parents that their kids are more willing to try new things, things they wouldnt eat before, she says. Parents are more apt to buy healthy foods if their kids are willing to eat them. Theyre not going to waste money on food kids wont eat.

While these efforts have been successful, there is more work to do to promote healthy living in the community. This includes communication, spreading the word about programs and events, and participation. Engaging parents is more difficult than children, according to Samantha Radecki, a community health educator for the Sault tribe.

To inspire the community, BHCC is planning its first-ever Spring Wellness event on May 14 at the Kinross Recreation Center. The event will include a sports gear giveaway for youth, yoga instruction, a three-mile walk, healthy snacks, and nutrition and health information. The event's goal is to encourage a more active, healthy lifestyle among residents of all ages.

We want this event to bring people together, kids and their parents, says Radecki, who will also lead group yoga sessions at the event. We want to expose them to healthy activities and wellness. That is our whole purpose.

At the event, BHCC will also kick off an effort to establish a community walking club. Participants will walk a three-mile loop through what is now a residential area of the former Kincheloe Air Force Base, which has been successfully redeveloped.

The goal is to better connect the community. The intention is to promote social activity, to promote outdoor activity, Radecki says. We want to get neighbors talking. Its not only about physical health but also social, mental, and emotional health. For the Eastern Upper Peninsula, SNAP -Ed has been a catalyst for this important community change.

The Spring Wellness event builds upon another activity the BHCC held last year: a sports gear giveaway. Organizers collected donations of gently used sports equipment, ranging from hockey gear to dance shoes, from across the Upper Peninsula to give to local kids. Giveaways were held twice, and both were successful, drawing dozens of children.

Organizers hope that the ongoing efforts will encourage more physical activity and healthier, more active lifestyles among the Kinross Township community.

Were getting some traction, Radecki says. We have a strong core group of people who show up every month and want to do good work in this community. We have had a positive impact on the community.

She hopes Spring Wellness will become a recurring event, and that a planned 5K run in the fall will provide inspiration in autumn.

Wed like to see them become staple things in the community and become something that people look forward to every spring and fall, Radecki says. We want to encourage people to invest in the community and themselves.
