US coronavirus data will now bypass the CDC and go straight to the White House. Here’s what this means for the world – ABC News

Led by physicians, scientists and epidemiologists, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the most reliable sources of knowledge during disease outbreaks.

But now, with the world in desperate need of authoritative information, one of the foremost agencies for fighting infectious disease has gone conspicuously silent.

For the first time since 1946, when the CDC came to life in a cramped Atlanta office to fight malaria, the agency is not at the front line of a public health emergency.

On April 22, CDC director Robert Redfield stood at the White House briefing room lectern and conceded that the coronavirus pandemic had "overwhelmed" the United States.

Following Redfield at the podium, President Donald Trump said the CDC director had been "totally misquoted" in his warning that COVID-19 would continue to pose serious difficulties as the US moved into its winter flu season in late 2020.

Invited to clarify, Redfield confirmed he had been quoted correctly in giving his opinion that there were potentially "difficult and complicated" times ahead.

Trump tried a different tack. "You may not even have corona coming back," the President said, once again contradicting the career virologist. "Just so you understand."

The exchange was interpreted by some pundits as confirmation that the CDC's venerated expertise had been sidelined as the coronavirus continued to ravage the US.

In the latest development, the New York Times reported this week the CDC has even been bypassed in its data collection, with the Trump administration ordering hospitals to send COVID-19 data directly to the White House.

When facing previous public health emergencies the CDC was a hive of activity, holding regular press briefings and developing guidance that was followed by governments around the world.

But during the greatest public health emergency in a century, it appears the CDC has been almost entirely erased by the White House as the public face of the COVID-19 pandemic response.

This diminished role is obvious to former leaders of the CDC, who say their scientific advice has never before been politicised to this extent.

As the COVID-19 crisis was unfolding, several CDC officials issued warnings, only to promptly disappear from public view.

Nancy Messonnier, director of the CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, predicted on February 25 that the virus was not contained and would grow into a pandemic.

The stock market plunged and Messonnier was removed from future White House press briefings.

Between March 9 and June 12 there was no CDC presence at White House press briefings on COVID-19.

The CDC has erred during the pandemic, most significantly in its initial efforts to develop a test for COVID-19.

The testing kits proved to be faulty a problem compounded by sluggish efforts to rectify the situation and then by severe delays in distributing enough tests to the public.

But many public health specialists are nevertheless baffled by the CDC's low profile as the pandemic continues to sweep the globe.

"They have been sidelined," said Howard Koh, former US assistant secretary for health. "We need their scientific leadership right now."

The CDC being bypassed in the collection of COVID-19 data is another body blow to the agency's standing.

Hospitals have instead been ordered to send all COVID-19 patient information to a central database in Washington DC.

This will have a range of likely knock-on effects. For starters, the new database will not be available to the public, prompting inevitable questions over the accuracy and transparency of data which will now be interpreted and shared by the White House.

The Department of Health and Human Services, which issued the new order, says the change will help the White House's coronavirus task force allocate resources.

But epidemiologists and public health experts around the world fear the new system will make it harder for people outside the White House to track the pandemic or access information.

This affects all nations, because one of the CDC's roles is to provide sound, independent public health guidance on issues such as infectious diseases, healthy living, travel health, emergency and disaster preparedness, and drug efficacy.

Other jurisdictions can then adapt this information to their local context expertise that has become even more essential during a pandemic, when uncertainty is the norm.

It is difficult to recall a previous public health emergency when political pressure led to a change in the interpretation of scientific evidence.

Despite the inevitable challenges that come with tackling a pandemic in real time, the CDC remains the best-positioned agency not just in the US but the entire world to help us manage this crisis as safely as possible.

In the absence of US leadership, nations should start thinking about developing their own national centres for disease control.

In Australia's case, these discussions have been ongoing since the 1990s, stymied by cost and lack of political will.

COVID-19, and the current sidelining of the CDC, may be the impetus needed to finally dust off those plans and make them a reality.

Other possibilities might bestock in the companyor free managerial training. There might be something like a company car or even season sports tickets. Its all meant to make the employee as happy as possible.

Another program that many companies implement now is a healthy lifestyle incentive. Lets talk about what exactly that entails, and how it impacts businesses.

Because of privatized healthcare in this country, many individuals need to pay for medical costs out of pocket. A company might give an employee healthcare, but the plan might not be the best. It could have a high deductible.

In this country,healthcare spending makes up more than 17% of the GDP. Thats considerably more than in many other countries. It goes toward things like:

The reason that employers came up with healthy incentive programs is so that they can keep their costs down. If an employer is giving its workers healthcare and the workers are healthier, the employer wont have to pay out as much money to care for them every year.

From a practical standpoint, it is a way to keep expenditures down, which the bosses can then redirect elsewhere in the company.

There are plenty of ways that an employer can try to keep its workers healthy. They might:

Many employers get creative with these programs and try to make them fun. They may offer yoga classes on the premises daily, or spin or SoulCycle classes. They might bring someone in to conduct daily meditation sessions.

At-work massages could be an option. They might bring in ergonomically designed furniture to help with employee posture. They might incentivize employee weight loss in different ways.

These sorts of initiatives have all kinds of positive impacts. One of the most evident is that there isless employee turnoverin companies with effective lifestyle incentive programs.

Most people want to eat healthy, exercise, etc., because they know that theyll look better and feel better that way. They want to have these sorts of programs in place because it makes it easier for them to reach their goals.

If an employer has such a program, it lets the workers know that the employer appreciates them, and wants to retain them. If youre happy in your job, then youre less likely to want to leave.

This means that the business can promote from within more often. They do not have to spend as much time interviewing and hiring to fill empty positions.

Some businesses are inherently boring. One day is much the same as the last. If a company has fun programs having to do with the healthy lifestyle initiative, it makes the days much more tolerable.

If you know that theres a competition going on to see who can lose the most weight or take the most steps during the week, then it can lead to some friendly banter around the water cooler.

Employees actively engage and mingle with each other. Its a healthy competitive spirit in which everyone can participate.

If you have unhealthy workers, that also means theyre not going to be at the office to do their work that much. Even if they work from home,which is happening more during the pandemic, they still wont do the job if theyre sick enough.

If companies sincerely want their employees to be more productive and physically present more often, these types of programs are a huge step in the right direction. The employees are more likely to be there to do the work, and the company thrives.

Its also true that when these programs exist, fewer employees have to go on disability. Disability claims mean the worker isnt doing the job for which the company hired them.

Its the same as absenteeism. The employees are not doing the work, so usually, the company has to hire someone to replace that worker, even if they are technically still on the payroll.

No one wants to go on disability, and with one of these programs in place, it is far less likely that it will happen.

These programs also lead to more happiness and less depression. That matters a lot right now with Covid-19 causing a housing crisis, and so many people getting sick.

If a healthy lifestyle program incentivizes employees to lead an active lifestyle, do yoga, eat right, work out at home, etc., then they are less likely to submit to depression. Some people right now feel the temptation to give up on their lives. They must fight to remain positive.

Things like physical activity help them do that. If a company can take an active role in keeping their employees in a better mental state, it makes sense for them to do so.

These programs have not existed for very long, and its a shame that more companies didnt think of them sooner. Many more modern companies in the tech industry have had them for a while, but their growth is becoming more widespread.

If these programs had existed decades ago, then maybe fewer people would have died as early as they did from heart attacks, strokes, or heart disease. An active lifestyle, healthy eating, and things of that nature are always going to be a great idea. We should applaud companies that encourage these behaviors.

Healthy lifestyle changes may lower blood levels of a marker linked to heart disease risk, a new study finds. The substance, C-reactive protein (CRP), is a byproduct of inflammation, an immune-related response involved in the formation of artery-clogging plaque. CRP levels of 3 milligrams per liter (mg/L) and higher are associated with an elevated risk of heart disease.

The study involved people at risk for heart disease who were part of an ongoing study in the Netherlands. Researchers looked at 1,794 people with known heart disease who had CRP levels between 0.8 and 3.1 mg/L at their first visit. At the second visit, after a median follow-up period of nearly 10 years, the participants' CRP levels had dipped only slightly on average. However, CRP levels fell more substantially among people who quit smoking, lost weight, or increased their physical activity levels. The results suggest that healthy lifestyle changes help to lower inflammation, which in turn may lower cardiovascular risk, according to the authors. Their study appeared in the May 2020 issue of the journal Atherosclerosis.

A heart attack and cardiac arrest survivor wants women to be aware of the signs which show their heart might be in trouble.

Tracy Healey is a fit and health 55 year old who eats well, doesnt smoke and generally leads a healthy lifestyle.

But earlier this year she suffered both a heart attack and a cardiac arrest after not recognising early warnings signs.

Tracy, who lives in Corwen, is now joining cardiac nurses at the North Wales Cardiac Centre to urge other women to keep an eye out for the telltale signs that their health could be in danger.

While both men and women can both experience the same common symptoms when experiencing a heart attack, early indications that youre unwell tend to be different for each gender.

Tracy said: I ignored the indigestion type pain that occurred in the night. It was only when the worsening discomfort started to move down one arm, and I awoke feeling very unwell with clammy skin and worsening pains around 4am that I decide to seek medical help and it was a good job I did.

Heart attack symptoms vary from person to person, and can include chest discomfort or tightness, pain that spreads to left or right arm, neck or jaw, back or stomach, unexplained sweating or shortness of breath.

Only around half of the women who have heart attacks, experience the constrictive chest pain typically associated with a heart attack. Typically, women tend to more commonly experience heartburn-like discomfort, neck or back pain, or nausea.

Tracy said: I never thought that I would ever have a heart attack at 55, I am generally fit and healthy I dont smoke and had been out for a nice walk the day before the incident with my family.

I do have a family history of heart disease but I have never had any symptoms suggesting I had a heart problem until now. I did not have the classic symptoms of a heart attack that you see on TV, like a crushing type chest pain.

My symptoms were different to that, having a heart attack never crossed my mind. My pain felt like mild indigestion at first, I went to bed but did not sleep for long as the pain got worse and kept waking me up. I began to feel hot and It was only when I started to get an odd discomfort in my arms that I thought something was not right and Id better seek medical help. Im still shocked about the whole thing.

After struggling with the digestive pain she experienced for around four hours, Tracy visited Wrexham Maelor Hospital Emergency Department to seek help.

On arrival to hospital my chest discomfort got worse, I began to feel generally unwell and this is when my heart stopped beating and I had a cardiac arrest.

Luckily I was in the emergency department at the time and the staff began CPR. I was then transferred by ambulance to the North Wales Cardiac Centre at Glan Clwyd where I was told that one of my coronary arteries, which is a blood vessel that feeds blood and oxygen to my heart muscle had blocked and was restricting blood flow.

Thankfully the team at the North Wales Cardiac Centre were quickly able to unblock the coronary artery by inserting a stent through my wrist, allowing blood to flow back to the heart muscle.

Anne-Marie Angel, Coronary Care Nurse at the North Wales Cardiac Centre, said: Heart attack symptoms vary from person to person. Common signs include chest discomfort that feels like pressure or tightness, pain that spreads to left or right arm, neck or jaw, back or stomach and some may feel sweaty or short of breath.

Women are more likely to get symptoms including back or neck pain, indigestion, heartburn or nausea. These symptoms are often easy to ignore and are passed off as something else.

We also know that women may be less likely to seek medical help or treatment despite all the warning signs and this unfortunately can dramatically reduce the chances of survival.

Luckily Tracy decided to seek medical help in time to receive rapid treatment, which is essential for a good recovery.

Tracy said: I am so very grateful to the staff at both Wrexham Maelor, Glan Clwyd Hospital and the North Wales cardiac centre, for the care I have received.

Everyone has been so reassuring, kind and supportive and I cant thank them enough.

If I could send one message out to the public of North Wales, it would be dont ignore your chest pain like I did, call 999 and get medical help as soon as you can, I almost left it too late.

At Killearn, in Stirlingshire, where we recently lodged a planning application to build 89 homes, approximately 45% of the site will be conserved as green space to ensure the proposed development complements its scenic rural locale. The proposals also include a new village green and a play area for families to enjoy the outdoors.

Further west, at Thornly Park Village in Renfrewshire, where we, as part of a consortium of developers, are aiming to deliver 605 new homes, 41% of the proposed 95-acre site will be retained as open space and woodland. Homes will be situated around an attractive central meadow and recreational space will be available for the whole community to enjoy.

Green space is a defining feature of Jordanhill Park, where we are building a landmark residential development on the site of the former Jordanhill Campus. To help retain as much of the spectacular scenery as possible we will be planting more than 400 trees over the course of the five years it will take to complete the site. The vast grounds offer space for picnics, recreation and walking while apartments with balconies ensure all homeowners have an outdoor area of their own.

Newswise It turns out that the social aspect of exercising may be just as important as its physical benefits.

Connor Sheehan, an assistant professor at ASUsT. Denny Sanford School of Social and Family Dynamics, is sharing these findings in a new paper recently published in the journal Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise. Curious to know which, if any, of the more socially oriented exercises, such as team sports, contribute to longevity, Sheehan and family and human development graduate student Longfeng Li found that any exercise is beneficial, but stretching, volleyball and fitness exercises (i.e., walking, aerobics, cycling, etc.) in particular were associated with lower rates of mortality.

In their study, Sheehan and Li used data collected by the National Health Interview Survey of 26,727 American adults ages 18 to 84 to examine the effect of 15 different exercises on mortality rates. The survey participants were asked once in 1998 what type of exercise they engaged in, then followed for all-cause mortality through the end of 2015.

During 17 years of follow-up, 4,955 deaths occurred. After adjusting for such factors as demographics, socioeconomic status and health behaviors, researchers found that walking, aerobics, stretching, weight lifting and stair climbing were related to lower risks of mortality. When adjusting for engagement in all exercise types, stretching and volleyball were found to be uniquely associated with lower risks of mortality.

Their findings suggest that some types of exercise have unique benefits for longevity, but most are indistinguishable in relation to longevity.

What that means, Sheehan said, is that if you're doing any exercise, that's better than if youre doing nothing. So I think what's best is to just keep doing what you can consistently do, what you consistently enjoy doing. I wouldn't go out of your way to adjust your lifestyle to the results of this study, because it might be harder for you to stretch than to play volleyball, for instance.

One exercise they found to have a negative effect on longevity was baseball, which they presume is due to the culture of chewing tobacco associated with the sport. And surprisingly, in spite of its association with the neurodegenerative disease chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), they did not find that football was associated with increased mortality.

In addition, Sheehan and Li found that the benefits ofexercise did not vary across different types of social groups, meaning any type of exercise is good for everyone.

Sheehan, who has conductedresearch on sleepin the past, is interested in expanding on these most recent findings to see how different types of exercise affect sleep quality.

Texas Biomed Focuses on Efficacy Ahead of Speed in COVID-19 Treatment R&D – Rivard Report

While companies around the world are racing to be the first to get a vaccine or treatment out into the market for COVID-19, the scientists at Texas Biomedical Research Institute are working to help find the most effective vaccine, said Joanne Turner, the institutes vice president of research.

Obviously, all of [these companies] would love to be the first one, if they could, Turner told the Rivard Report. But really its about investing in multiple potential vaccines with the hope that one works. Its likely that all of them will work but they may not all work for long-term vaccines, or they may not work in certain populations.

The institutes research consists of understanding the novel coronavirus virus better and in creating and testing potential treatments and vaccines by studying animal models. Initial findings showed macaques and baboons to be excellent animal models for studying COVID-19 and potential treatments.

These studies take time, Turner said, even as the local researchers push COVID-19 to the forefront.

We freed up time and space and personnel to take on this really practical need, Turner said.

One of the institutes researchers, Luis Martinez-Sobrido, is working on creating a vaccine using a weakened form of the virus, but its still in the early stages of research and development, a Texas Biomed spokeswoman said Wednesday. Other vaccines already being tested on humans, such as Modernas, use specific pieces of the germ to trigger an immune response.

Texas Biomed isnt just working on creating and testing its own vaccine, but also is testing the efficacy of vaccines and treatments from drugmakers in the lab and on animal models, said Cory Hallam, vice president of business development and strategic partnerships.

Were also supporting a lot of these large firms whore coming to us to do their testing for them, said Hallam, who declined to disclose which firms Texas Biomed are working with. [Were doing their] laboratory testing, which tends to be happening in parallel with some of their human testing right now.

In addition to Moderna, other drugmakers around the world are already testing on humans, such as Canadas Medicago and Indias Zydus.

By testing in a lab, on animals, and on humans simultaneously, more data is being generated faster, allowing a product to clear regulatory hurdles more rapidly and get to market faster, he said.

The vaccine-to-market process has historically been a long one, usually requiring years of development and testing, Turner said. The mumps vaccine, considered the fastest ever approved, took four years to create. Following basic research, a vaccine must be developed, go through animal model studies, get FDA approval, go through several human clinical trials, then be mass manufactured and mass distributed.

Even if an effective vaccine is ready for market by the end of the year, it might not be the best vaccine to come out of all the research going on worldwide, Turner said.

What I expect well see is that one [vaccine] is going to show really good promise early, that one will get investments, she said. Itll go into people, and once theyve done all the safety testing, therell be others coming through the pipeline that may actually end up being better in the end.

Researchers will continue to work on better treatments and vaccines, and the global collaboration will inevitably make for the best solution against COVID-19, she said.

It may end up being the first one is the best one, and that could be the way, but I suspect it wont be, Turner said. The first isnt always the one with longevity. Usually, theres more work behind [it] that comes through.

Getting more than just one vaccine to market than one will also likely help drive the cost down, a concern after the federal government failed to include pricing protections in at least four contracts for drugs to combat COVID-19.

While the Texas Biomedical Research Institute has receivedmore than $3 millionin donations from USAA, H-E-B, the Mays Family Foundation, and others to study the coronavirus, it has received little federal funding for its research.

Last week the institute received further private funding from the San Antonio Partnership for Precision Therapeutics (SAPPT), which awarded a total of $600,000 to three COVID-19 research projects being conducted at Texas Biomed and UT Health San Antonio. One project is studying the role of a specific protein in the virus, while the other two are looking at how the virus evades the human immune system and prevents it from fighting back.

Texas Biomed also received $800,000 in funding from the Texas Biomedical Forum, a nonprofit womens organization that supports the institute.

Texas Biomed has submitted several federal grant applications related to its coronavirus research and hopes to receive federal funds in the upcoming months, a Texas Biomed spokeswoman said.

So the more this becomes a lifestyle habit, where you are eating nutritious food, reducing intake of high-sugar, high-fat and high-salt processed foods, the more youre going to get your immunity stronger.

What about the belief that immunity can be built in a few days?

Immunity is not built overnight. It doesnt happen by including one superfood in your diet or doing one good thing every day. Yes, it does take a while, but that does not mean it will take forever. There are a couple of essential pillars which go into improving the inherent immunity of a person.

What is the best way to build immunity? Can you suggest a few foods that help?

Very balanced meals. I think our Indian thali is one of the best examples of good immunity building foods as it is balanced and there is focus on dark green leafy vegetables. Vegetables are a very important part of our diet as they are all immunity-building high mineral foods. Proteins are extremely crucial because those are where your antibodies and your WBCs require the substrate from. A quarter of your plate should always be protein as this is crucial for immunity, along with carbs.

But food is not the only pillar. Hydration, exercise and sleep are the other three very crucial factors. You should have at least four active hours a week, if not one active hour every day. That is one of the best ways to release endorphins, which suppresses cortisol and therefore improves inherent immunity. Sleep is when your body repairs wear and tear and detoxes dead cells, rejuvenating with fresh new cells. All adults require at least seven to eight hours of sleep.

Hydration is very important because a dehydrated body works sub-optimally and you are unable to perform to the best of your mental or physical ability.

If you had to suggest a diet chart for healthy living, what would be its core elements?

Balanced meals, with foods rich in protein and also vitamin C (like amla). Yes, if you have access to fruits like kiwis and berries, why not? But otherwise, even the Indian fruit palette has a lot of healthy vitamin C-enriched fruits. Of course, you can take vitamin C supplements too, particularly one packed with zinc like 1000 milligrams of Fast&Up Charge because it comes packed with zinc which is a crucial vitamin to fight all viral diseases, especially Covid-19 because it helps to stop the RNA multiplication of the virus.

I would recommend haldi, of course, because of the active ingredient curcumin, which is antibacterial, antiviral antimicrobial and therefore helps us to maintain our immunity. Its also great for anti-ageing, bone health and inflammation. However, Indians have not just one spice but many, including tulsi, neem, cinnamon, ginger and pepper. All of these have their own active ingredients which also contribute to building immunity.

Exploring the Effects of Social Isolation on Couples During a Pandemic – UConn Today

During the time of COVID-19, life as we know it has irrevocably changed. Because of shelter-in-place policies, normal daily activities going to the office, going outside, seeing friends, spending time with family have been disrupted or derailed entirely.

Now, a team of researchers from the University of Connecticuts Department of Communication and Columbia Universitys Center for Behavioral Cardiovascular Health will examine how shelter-in-place policies have impacted physical exercise among couples in densely populated cities like Chicago, Boston, and New York City. Investigators on the project include UConns Amanda Denes and Columbias Talea Cornelius.

Physical activity is a critical factor in maintaining a healthy lifestyle, as low levels of exercise can contribute to several health risks including obesity, heart disease, multiple cancers, and Type 2 diabetes. Unfortunately, the current state of affairs, particularly in crowded cities with stay-at-home orders or social distancing policies, is not conducive towards many common forms of physical activity.

For example, someone living in a densely populated city may find it difficult to go for a run and maintain safe social distances from others the entire time, which in turn may limit their ability to exercise. Between the safety risks of outdoor exercise in densely populated areas and gym closures (or greater restrictions and strict limits on how many people can be in gyms that have reopened), many people may face a decrease in their exercise levels.

Denes, Cornelius, and their colleagues will look at the physical activity levels of couples living in several major cities before and after the shelter-in-place policies. By examining this data, the researchers will answer an important question: How has the amount of exercise people engage in been impacted by these shelter-in-place policies?

However, not everyone may experience the same adverse impacts. According to existing research, people in high-quality relationships typically experience more social support and positive interactions, which may help create a home environment more conducive to maintaining individual health and well-being. The researchers believe these high-quality relationships may counteract the unfavorable effects of shelter-in-place mandates, therefore allowing for the maintenance of, or the creation of new, exercise habits compared to people in poor-quality relationships, who may see a bigger drop in healthy behaviors.

Relationship quality is more important than ever, as physical interaction with people outside of ones household has been sharply limited during the pandemic. Critically, the COVID-19 pandemic can place great strain on couples. Denes, Cornelius, and their research team will also explore how couples communication changes during these difficult times.

The conclusions reached from this research have the potential to garner more insight on how shelter-in-place and social distancing policies have impacted physical activity habits among couples. The findings from the study will also help clarify how relationships and the communication that occurs within them affect physical activity, as well as how relational partners influence each others health. Ultimately, the study will answer important questions regarding the effects of relationships on health and well-being during stressful times.

This study is funded by a seed grant from the University of Connecticuts Institute for Collaboration on Health, Intervention, and Policy (InCHIP) to examine social and behavioral implications of COVID-19.

Amanda Denes is an associate professor in the Department of Communication at the University of Connecticut. She received her B.A. from Boston College and her M.A. and Ph.D. in communication from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Her primary area of research specialization is interpersonal communication, with emphasis in biosocial models of communication, sexual communication, and communication processes related to maintaining successful relationships.

Talea Cornelius is an instructor in medical sciences at the Center for Behavioral Cardiovascular Health, Columbia University Irving Medical Center. She attended Rutgers University for her B.A. in psychology, Boston University for her M.S.W. in clinical social work, and the University of Connecticut for her Ph.D in social psychology. Corneliuss research examines health behavior and behavior change in dyads, with a focus on the impact of acute medical events on couples.

Mumbai:The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM), one of the apex trade associations of India has started a national health & wellness awareness program called Illness to Wellness to promote healthy living and preventive health through holistic measures.

Supported by the hygiene brand SAVLON, the programme was kicked off with a webinar on the topic Illness to Wellness The Yoga Way which saw leading health and yoga experts and recognized industry leaders deliberate on how Yoga could be the answer for mitigating threats caused by viruses and other ailments like the COVID 19.

A key speaker at the sessionDr Ishwar V. Basavaraddi, director, Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga, Ministry of Ayush, Government of India,revealed that, we have deployed 30 instructors in COVID centres run by the Delhi government, who would teach patients yoga for three hours in the morning. Additionally, we have undertaken yoga lessons for COVID patients in the neighbouring 11 districts. We received 500 applications from Department of Science & Technology to understand the beneficial aspects of yoga especially for COVID patients and so are working on three projects with renowned yoga institutes to arrive at findings. The programme is being expanded to cover people who have come in contact with COVID patients like family members, police personnel, medical professionals etc.

For centuries yoga has proven to be a tool for mental and physical well-being. As the focus on boosting immunity grows due to the widespread adverse health effects caused by the COVID 19 pandemic, the role of this ancient and spiritual practice has become prominent in the journey from illness to wellness. Other eminent speakers emphasised the importance of wellness, not just in challenging times, but in general as a way of life.

While sharing his perspective,Mr Rajiv Chandran, director and office-in-charge, UN Information Centreemphatically stated that United Nations embraced the Yoga and 175 out of 193 countries unanimously agreed to celebrate Yoga as an annual International Day. The COVID19 pandemic has completely transformed the concept of wellness. Now, wellness is not merely an individuals concern rather a community strategy and is being viewed in a very broader perspective of peoples relationship with planet and the society.

Promoting adoption of correct lifestyle and wellness strategy,(Padma Shri) Guruji Dr. H. R. Nagendra, Chancellor, Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Samsthana & President, Indian Yoga Associationsaid, During the present COVID pandemic situations, Yoga A Way of Life can bring wellness for people at large. Coronavirus has the potential to infect and affect the human lives, however our immune system is also very strong as WBC (white blood cells) acts a gigantic robust army to defend from many viruses including corona. Stress weakens our immunity system and thus it becomes a victim of virus (corona) attack. He further stated that although one can cure through medicines, vaccinations and other supplements, the solution to strengthen our immunity is Yoga only.

Sharing his views, Mr Anil Rajput, Chairman, ASSOCHAM CSR Council said, COVID pandemic has taught human race the hard lesson that medical science may not have readymade answers to emerging health crises. Therefore, we need to go back to the basics by putting focus on preventive measures and healthy living. US coronavirus data will now go straight to the White House. Here’s what this means for the world – The Conversation AU

Led by physicians, scientists and epidemiologists, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the most reliable sources of knowledge during disease outbreaks. But now, with the world in desperate need of authoritative information, one of the foremost agencies for fighting infectious disease has gone conspicuously silent.

For the first time since 1946, when the CDC came to life in a cramped Atlanta office to fight malaria, the agency is not at the front line of a public health emergency.

On April 22, CDC director Robert Redfield stood at the White House briefing room lectern and conceded that the coronavirus pandemic had overwhelmed the United States. Following Redfield at the podium, President Donald Trump said the CDC director had been totally misquoted in his warning that COVID-19 would continue to pose serious difficulties as the US moved into its winter flu season in late 2020.

Invited to clarify, Redfield confirmed he had been quoted correctly in giving his opinion that there were potentially difficult and complicated times ahead.

Trump tried a different tack. You may not even have corona coming back, the president said, once again contradicting the career virologist. Just so you understand.

The exchange was interpreted by some pundits as confirmation that the CDCs venerated expertise had been sidelined as the coronavirus continued to ravage the US.

In the latest development, the New York Times reported this week the CDC has even been bypassed in its data collection, with the Trump administration ordering hospitals to send COVID-19 data directly to the White House.

When facing previous public health emergencies the CDC was a hive of activity, holding regular press briefings and developing guidance that was followed by governments around the world. But during the greatest public health emergency in a century, it appears the CDC has been almost entirely erased by the White House as the public face of the COVID-19 pandemic response.

This diminished role is obvious to former leaders of the CDC, who say their scientific advice has never before been politicised to this extent.

As the COVID-19 crisis was unfolding, several CDC officials issued warnings, only to promptly disappear from public view. Nancy Messonnier, director of the CDCs National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, predicted on February 25 that the virus was not contained and would grow into a pandemic.

The stock market plunged and Messonnier was removed from future White House press briefings. Between March 9 and June 12 there was no CDC presence at White House press briefings on COVID-19.

The CDC has erred during the pandemic, most significantly in its initial efforts to develop a test for COVID-19. The testing kits proved to be faulty a problem compounded by sluggish efforts to rectify the situation and then by severe delays in distributing enough tests to the public.

But many public health specialists are nevertheless baffled by the CDCs low profile as the pandemic continues to sweep the globe.

They have been sidelined, said Howard Koh, former US assistant secretary for health. We need their scientific leadership right now.

The CDC being bypassed in the collection of COVID-19 data is another body blow to the agencys standing.

Hospitals have instead been ordered to send all COVID-19 patient information to a central database in Washington DC.

This will have a range of likely knock-on effects. For starters, the new database will not be available to the public, prompting inevitable questions over the accuracy and transparency of data which will now be interpreted and shared by the White House.

The Department of Health and Human Services, which issued the new order, says the change will help the White Houses coronavirus task force allocate resources. But epidemiologists and public health experts around the world fear the new system will make it harder for people outside the White House to track the pandemic or access information.

This affects all nations, because one of the CDCs roles is to provide sound, independent public health guidance on issues such as infectious diseases, healthy living, travel health, emergency and disaster preparedness, and drug efficacy. Other jurisdictions can then adapt this information to their local context expertise that has become even more essential during a pandemic, when uncertainty is the norm.

It is difficult to recall a previous public health emergency when political pressure led to a change in the interpretation of scientific evidence.

Despite the inevitable challenges that come with tackling a pandemic in real time, the CDC remains the best-positioned agency not just in the US but the entire world to help us manage this crisis as safely as possible.

In the absence of US leadership, nations should start thinking about developing their own national centres for disease control. In Australias case, these discussions have been ongoing since the 1990s, stymied by cost and lack of political will.

COVID-19, and the current sidelining of the CDC, may be the impetus needed to finally dust off those plans and make them a reality.
