Tembo on why SuperSport United opted to exercise one-year option on defender Khumalo – Goal.com

The Matsatsantsa boss has expressed his delight in the fact the veteran defender will stay put with his troops

SuperSport United coach Kaitano Tembo says defender Bongani Khumalos healthy lifestyle and true professionalism is what led the club to extend the veterans contract.

The 2019/20 MTN8 winning manager says the departure of skipper Dean Furman also pushed the club to retain the former Bafana Bafana defender as they looked to maintain the spine of the side.

Matsatsantsa exercised a one-year option on the 33-year-olds deal and his agent Glyn Binkin confirmed the news to Goal on Friday. Tembo hopes the former Tottenham Hotspur defender will continue to guide his youngsters.

Yeah, weve taken the option to extend his contract. I think hes still important to us in terms of guiding the youngsters in the team, Tembo told Goal.

Hes very experienced and hes a true professional as well. He plays a very important role in terms of guiding some of our players, thats why weve taken that option.

Most definitely [Furmans departure also influenced our decision], I think you always want to have a little bit of your spine, a strong backbone in the team.

"As much as you want to bring in youngsters, you also want to try and make sure youve got the right players to guide them and Bongani fits that criteria very well.

And because hes a true professional, hes one who lives a healthy lifestyle and hes one where the youngsters can learn from and thats why we want to continue with him.

The lanky centre-back will spend his third consecutive campaign with the Tshwane giants and Tembo looks back at his first encounter with the former University of Pretoria player.

Yeah, Ive known Bongani for many years since he arrived at the club when he was 19 from Tuks, and he went on to go to Europe and played for Tottenham, he added.

I think hes a true reflection of what we want for our youngsters to aspire and to also learn from.

The former Bafana Bafana centre-back launched his top-flight career with the three-time PSL champions back in 2007 from AmaTuks as a 20-year-old.

Taking a look at his contribution this current season, the Manzini-born player has participated in 15 games across all competitions and recently said his ambition is to lift his fifth PSL title, his fourth with the club.

Having four PSL gold medals next to his name, Khumalo will be a key figure as Tembo looks to guide the club to a decent finish should they fail to challenge log leaders, Kaizer Chiefs for the lucrative crown.

As things stand, they sit fourth on the log table with 40 points and trail Amakhosi by eight points since the season was suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic in March.

Associated Chambers of Commerce India launches ‘Illness to Wellness – The Yoga Way’ – The New Indian Express

By Express News Service

Topromote healthy lifestyle through holistic measures, the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) launched an awareness programme, titled Illness to Wellness on July 16. The programme was conceived to bring the focus back on the many aspects of life, said Anil Rajput, Chairman of ASSOCHAM CSR Council. These areas include healthy diet, exercise, hygienic habits, timely preventive practices, and such which got relegated to the backburner over the years.

"This pandemic has taught us that medical science may not have readymade answers to emerging health crises. We need to go back to the basics by putting focus on preventive measures and healthy living," said Rajput. The programme, in association with hygiene brand Savlon, started with a webinar 'Illness to Wellness The Yoga Way' wherein health and yoga experts spoke about yoga's ability to mitigate threats caused by viruses, including COVID-19, and other ailments. All the speakers agreed that yoga has proven to be a tool for mental and physical well-being over the centuries.

As the focus on boosting immunity grows due to the widespread COVID- 19 pandemic, this ancient spiritual practice should be assimilated into daily life, they said. We have deployed 30 instructors in COVID centres run by the Delhi government to teach yoga to patients. The classes are held for three hours in the morning.

Further, we have also sent yoga instructors to 11 districts in the neighbourhood of Delhi to undertaken yoga classes for COVID patients, said Dr Ishwar V Basavaraddi, Director of Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga, Ministry of Ayush, Government of India. Dr Basavraddi informed that the Department of Science & Technology under the Ministry of Science & Technology, has also evinced interest in understanding the benefits of yoga for COVID patients and is undertaking a couple of studies on this. "We are expanding the programme to include family members, police personnel, medical professionals.who came in contact with COVID patients," he said.

At the webinar, Rajiv Chandran, Director and office-incharge, UN Information Centre, said that the COVID-19 pandemic has completely transformed the concept of wellness. Now, wellness is not merely an individual's concern. It is a community strategy, being viewed in a very broad perspective of peoples relationship with the planet and the society. Talking about the importance of adopting a healthy lifestyle, Dr HR Nagendra, Chancellor, Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Sansthana, said, A strong immune system can withstand all kinds of viruses. The white blood cells act as a gigantic robust army to defend the body. Stress weakens our immune system, but practicing yoga daily can make it robust.

IN A NUTSHELL ASSCHOMs Illness to Wellness event was conceived to bring the focus back on the many aspects of life such as healthy diet, exercise, hygienic habits, timely preventive practices, and such, which got relegated to the backburner over the years. All the speakers agreed that yoga has proven to be a tool for mental and physical well-being over the centuries. As the focus on boosting immunity grows due to the widespread COVID-19 pandemic, this ancient spiritual practice should be assimilated into daily life, the speakers unanimously agreed.

Lewis Hamilton’s dog is vegan – but what’s the science behind plant-based pet food? – Euronews

Earlier this month Lewis Hamilton revealed that his dog was now fully vegan.

The Formula 1 champion has been plant-based himself for the last three years or so, but his British Bulldog Roscoe has only recently made the complete switch. Hamilton shared the news on his dogs Instagram account, explaining that his beloved pet is super happy with the result.

Roscoe had previously suffered health issues - typical for flat-faced breeds like pugs and bulldogs - but Hamilton says these issues have cleared up since making the dietary switch.

Since he has gone vegan, his coat is much softer, his swollen paws have healed up, he explained, he is no longer limping with the pain of arthritis and his breathing has opened up.

Hamiltons other bulldog Coco died in June, aged 6, after battling a litany of health problems. Despite trying to revive her, Hamilton was unable to save Coco, but was spurred by this tragedy to reconsider what he was feeding to his pets. Im looking into dog food and supplements, Hamilton said in an Instagram post, as I think this industry can be better and our pets deserve the best we can give them.

The idea of vegan dog food may seem utterly absurd at first glance, but it turns out that plant-based pet food is a growing movement, with a surprising level of support.

As doctors warn that we need to move away from animal products to protect both human health and the environment - what about the diets of our pets?

As the owner of two large sheepdogs, the more I researched this topic the more intrigued I became. After spending months painstakingly searching for the healthiest, most-balanced meals for both my dogs, I had settled on a raw-food diet. My two eat a blend of raw meat and vegetables every day and are exceptionally fit and healthy. So a vegan diet seemed to be the exact opposite of what I had settled on as the best choice.

But the experts dont necessarily agree.

"It is possible to feed dogs a vegan diet so long as it is adequately balanced, explains Michaela Craggs, a veterinarian at Joii Pet Care. Anecdotally, I have seen some dogs do well on vegan diets and I have seen some improvement with dogs with skin allergy. This is likely due to the change of protein. This is only anecdotally though and there isn't the evidence to back this up at present.

Michaela does caution that pet owners looking to make the switch should first talk to a vet, to make sure a drastic diet change wouldnt cause any harm. The main thing to be sure about when feeding a vegan food to a dog is that it's a complete food, she adds.

Leading animal behaviourist James Carroll supports this view. A good vegan dog food seems to be on par with meat-based dog food, explains James, at least according to a two-year study which compared the two. Dogs at the end of the research had nutrient surpluses which were similar to each other, but varying nutrient deficiencies - with more deficiencies in the meat-based diet.

This really just goes to prove that no standard diet can meet all the needs of every individual dog.

James also advises pet owners to speak with nutritional experts if they want to properly understand their dogs nutritional needs, using blood tests to determine if there are any deficiencies which need addressing.

But theres also the matter of palatability. From personal experiences only, I know one of my pooches would sooner go to bed hungry than go near a vegetable - so would a dog ever really choose these meals?

On a taste test it is unlikely dogs would choose a plant-based diet, says James, although some might! This only matters in relation to how food-motivated a dog is: more food-fussy dogs are less likely to eat enough plant-based food to maintain a good condition.

The plant-based pet food business is small, but rapidly expanding, with more new brands popping up each year. Benevo is a UK-based ethical pet food company that has been in operation since 2005, making it one of the oldest vegan dog food providers in Europe.

Back in 2004, it became apparent to us the last meat in most veggie households was the meat their pets were eating, explains Benevos website. Many of those pets were rescue animals and so having rescued one animal, people found themselves with an ethical dilemma as they spooned out a less fortunate animal from a tin. For some, having to buy meat to feed a pet meant they had chosen not to have a pet at all.

The company researched how to replace essential nutrients derived from meat with bio-alternatives from non-animal sources. The main adult dog food Benevo supply is made with soya, corn, white rice, sunflower oil, peas, beetroot, and tomato. The result is a product with 27 per cent protein content - an impressive figure, given there is no meat featured at all.

Theres a grain-free option too, without soya, corn, or rice - instead made up of lentils, potato, and chickpeas. This only has 6 per cent protein content, so its a notable drop in the nutritional quality, but better-suited to dogs on grain-free diets.

Some pet owners may be tempted to prepare vegan meals for their dogs themselves, but this isnt something vets recommend.

I do not advise home prepared vegan diets as they are extremely difficult to balance, warns Michaela. As a vet I would not attempt to balance a diet myself. However, if an owner is very keen on this then I would encourage them to contact a certified veterinary nutritionist to ensure they are using an appropriate recipe. This is because it's possible for animals to have a nutrient deficiency if fed inadequately formulated commercial or home made diets.

They can develop skin conditions associated with inadequate levels of zinc. Diets that are high in fibre can interfere with the absorption of essential fatty acids which can also lead to skin and coat abnormalities.

The owners switching their dogs to vegan diets tend to be vegetarian or vegan themselves. Theyre doing it for ethical, usually for farm-animal welfare reasons, says James.

A lot of commercial pet foods use meat sourced from abattoirs 4D bins, which stands for disabled, diseased, dying, dead - aka the animals deemed unfit for human consumption. These products can be full of all sorts of nasty stuff, including the same pesticides and antibiotics that are found in meat products marketed to humans, explains PETA Director Elisa Allen, which is why many vegetarians and vegans feed their animal companions nutritious and environmentally friendly plant-based meals.

Elisa also highlights the speciesism at the heart of pet food, especially for owners who are themselves vegetarian or vegan. Despite eschewing meat ourselves because of its cruelty and/or planetary impact, we are still feeding our pets the flesh of factory-farmed animals, who - despite having exactly the same capacity for suffering and joy as any dog, cat, or human - have endured miserable and gruesome deaths, she adds.

The importance of researching any major dietary change for pets is clear, however. Like James and Michaela, Elisa emphasises the need for careful planning and consideration of each animals individual needs.

For pet owners considering introducing veganism to their dogs, PETA recommends reading this guide to pet health.

Cardiac arrest survivor wants women to be aware of the signs which show their heart might be in trouble – Wrexham.com

A heart attack and cardiac arrest survivor wants women to be aware of the signs which show their heart might be in trouble.

Tracy Healey is a fit and health 55 year old who eats well, doesnt smoke and generally leads a healthy lifestyle.

But earlier this year she suffered both a heart attack and a cardiac arrest after not recognising early warnings signs.

Tracy, who lives in Corwen, is now joining cardiac nurses at the North Wales Cardiac Centre to urge other women to keep an eye out for the telltale signs that their health could be in danger.

While both men and women can both experience the same common symptoms when experiencing a heart attack, early indications that youre unwell tend to be different for each gender.

Tracy said: I ignored the indigestion type pain that occurred in the night. It was only when the worsening discomfort started to move down one arm, and I awoke feeling very unwell with clammy skin and worsening pains around 4am that I decide to seek medical help and it was a good job I did.

Heart attack symptoms vary from person to person, and can include chest discomfort or tightness, pain that spreads to left or right arm, neck or jaw, back or stomach, unexplained sweating or shortness of breath.

Only around half of the women who have heart attacks, experience the constrictive chest pain typically associated with a heart attack. Typically, women tend to more commonly experience heartburn-like discomfort, neck or back pain, or nausea.

Tracy said: I never thought that I would ever have a heart attack at 55, I am generally fit and healthy I dont smoke and had been out for a nice walk the day before the incident with my family.

I do have a family history of heart disease but I have never had any symptoms suggesting I had a heart problem until now. I did not have the classic symptoms of a heart attack that you see on TV, like a crushing type chest pain.

My symptoms were different to that, having a heart attack never crossed my mind. My pain felt like mild indigestion at first, I went to bed but did not sleep for long as the pain got worse and kept waking me up. I began to feel hot and It was only when I started to get an odd discomfort in my arms that I thought something was not right and Id better seek medical help. Im still shocked about the whole thing.

After struggling with the digestive pain she experienced for around four hours, Tracy visited Wrexham Maelor Hospital Emergency Department to seek help.

On arrival to hospital my chest discomfort got worse, I began to feel generally unwell and this is when my heart stopped beating and I had a cardiac arrest, she said.

Luckily I was in the emergency department at the time and the staff began CPR. I was then transferred by ambulance to the North Wales Cardiac Centre at Glan Clwyd where I was told that one of my coronary arteries, which is a blood vessel that feeds blood and oxygen to my heart muscle had blocked and was restricting blood flow.

Thankfully the team at the North Wales Cardiac Centre were quickly able to unblock the coronary artery by inserting a stent through my wrist, allowing blood to flow back to the heart muscle.

Anne-Marie Angel, Coronary Care Nurse at the North Wales Cardiac Centre, said: Heart attack symptoms vary from person to person. Common signs include chest discomfort that feels like pressure or tightness, pain that spreads to left or right arm, neck or jaw, back or stomach and some may feel sweaty or short of breath.

Women are more likely to get symptoms including back or neck pain, indigestion, heartburn or nausea. These symptoms are often easy to ignore and are passed off as something else.

We also know that women may be less likely to seek medical help or treatment despite all the warning signs and this unfortunately can dramatically reduce the chances of survival.

Luckily Tracy decided to seek medical help in time to receive rapid treatment, which is essential for a good recovery.

Tracy added: I am so very grateful to the staff at both Wrexham Maelor, Glan Clwyd Hospital and the North Wales cardiac centre, for the care I have received.

Everyone has been so reassuring, kind and supportive and I cant thank them enough.

If I could send one message out to the public of North Wales, it would be dont ignore your chest pain like I did, call 999 and get medical help as soon as you can, I almost left it too late.

US coronavirus data will now go straight to the White House. Here’s what this means for the world – The Canberra Times

news, local-news,

Led by physicians, scientists and epidemiologists, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the most reliable sources of knowledge during disease outbreaks. But now, with the world in desperate need of authoritative information, one of the foremost agencies for fighting infectious disease has gone conspicuously silent. For the first time since 1946, when the CDC came to life in a cramped Atlanta office to fight malaria, the agency is not at the front line of a public health emergency. On April 22, CDC director Robert Redfield stood at the White House briefing room lectern and conceded that the coronavirus pandemic had "overwhelmed" the United States. Following Redfield at the podium, President Donald Trump said the CDC director had been "totally misquoted" in his warning that COVID-19 would continue to pose serious difficulties as the US moved into its winter 'flu season in late 2020. Invited to clarify, Redfield confirmed he had been quoted correctly in giving his opinion that there were potentially "difficult and complicated" times ahead. Trump tried a different tack. "You may not even have corona coming back," the president said, once again contradicting the career virologist. "Just so you understand." The exchange was interpreted by some pundits as confirmation that the CDC's venerated expertise had been sidelined as the coronavirus continued to ravage the US. In the latest development, the New York Times reported this week the CDC has even been bypassed in its data collection, with the Trump administration ordering hospitals to send COVID-19 data directly to the White House. When facing previous public health emergencies the CDC was a hive of activity, holding regular press briefings and developing guidance that was followed by governments around the world. But during the greatest public health emergency in a century, it appears the CDC has been almost entirely erased by the White House as the public face of the COVID-19 pandemic response. This diminished role is obvious to former leaders of the CDC, who say their scientific advice has never before been politicised to this extent. As the COVID-19 crisis was unfolding, several CDC officials issued warnings, only to promptly disappear from public view. Nancy Messonnier, director of the CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, predicted on February 25 that the virus was not contained and would grow into a pandemic. The stock market plunged and Messonnier was removed from future White House press briefings. Between March 9 and June 12 there was no CDC presence at White House press briefings on COVID-19. The CDC has erred during the pandemic, most significantly in its initial efforts to develop a test for COVID-19. The testing kits proved to be faulty - a problem compounded by sluggish efforts to rectify the situation - and then by severe delays in distributing enough tests to the public. But many public health specialists are nevertheless baffled by the CDC's low profile as the pandemic continues to sweep the globe. "They have been sidelined," said Howard Koh, former US assistant secretary for health. "We need their scientific leadership right now." The CDC being bypassed in the collection of COVID-19 data is another body blow to the agency's standing. Hospitals have instead been ordered to send all COVID-19 patient information to a central database in Washington DC. This will have a range of likely knock-on effects. For starters, the new database will not be available to the public, prompting inevitable questions over the accuracy and transparency of data which will now be interpreted and shared by the White House. The Department of Health and Human Services, which issued the new order, says the change will help the White House's coronavirus task force allocate resources. But epidemiologists and public health experts around the world fear the new system will make it harder for people outside the White House to track the pandemic or access information. This affects all nations, because one of the CDC's roles is to provide sound, independent public health guidance on issues such as infectious diseases, healthy living, travel health, emergency and disaster preparedness, and drug efficacy. Other jurisdictions can then adapt this information to their local context - expertise that has become even more essential during a pandemic, when uncertainty is the norm. It is difficult to recall a previous public health emergency when political pressure led to a change in the interpretation of scientific evidence. Despite the inevitable challenges that come with tackling a pandemic in real time, the CDC remains the best-positioned agency - not just in the US but the entire world - to help us manage this crisis as safely as possible. In the absence of US leadership, nations should start thinking about developing their own national centres for disease control. In Australia's case, these discussions have been ongoing since the 1990s, stymied by cost and lack of political will. COVID-19, and the current sidelining of the CDC, may be the impetus needed to finally dust off those plans and make them a reality. The Conversation

"We need their scientific leadership right now."

What does it mean for the world?

The CDC being bypassed in the collection of COVID-19 data is another body blow to the agency's standing.

MARBELLA,Spain: A Spanish anti-ageing doctor is leading the way in prescribing a new medical discipline aimed at helping prevent disease and improving quality of life and longevity.

Dr. Alfonso Galan, of the Neolife Clinic in Marbella, believes age management medicine (AMM) should become the standard form of care in the 21st century.

A specialist in family and community medicine, Galan said AMM could help toward increasing life expectancy by optimizing biomarkers related to age and the ageing process.

The main difference from other specialties is that it focuses on health instead of illness, and we mean health in the way the World Health Organization described it 75 years ago: A state of complete physical, mental, and social wellbeing.

We aim for optimal values of excellence so that our patients are in the best possible state metabolic-wise, hormonal-wise, and in their minds and bodies for years and years to come, he added.

AMM treatment is based around the four pillars of exercise, nutrition, advanced supplementation, and bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, Galan said, with a focus on sleep and rest, stress management, and detoxification.

Patients will feel younger, more energetic, stronger, leaner, more capable of doing their daily tasks, coping better with life stress, also improving their libido and performance as well as better health for the arteries, bones, and joints.

We use supplements, scientifically proven to be effective and safe, instead of drugs to try and fix most issues and suboptimal biomarkers, whichallows us to minimize the risk of side effects a lot.

As for the hormone replacement therapy, we use bio-identical hormones, that is, molecularly identical to the hormones we are not producing properly, we also dont go over the normal physiological levels of a healthy young man or woman, he added.

The former emergency doctor pointed out that AMM also reduced the possibility of people suffering from age-related diseases such as osteoarthritis, Alzheimers, Parkinsons, osteoporosis, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.

Medical assistant, Diana Bulimaga, from Marbella, said: It is not just another medical treatment, but an integral complex that helps to improve any aspects of life, body, and mind.

Nutritionist Alejandro Monzo said that the nutrition pillar of AMM could have a huge impact. We carried out a study monitoring and following up on the body composition of patients with individualized diets that are prescribed according to the patients profile and special needs.

The control of a healthy diet, the change of habits, the monitoring of physical exercise, and improving the relationship with food are the main objectives.

This change toward a healthy lifestyle is what helps patients to achieve a higher quality of life and disease prevention, Monzo added.

AMM treatments were designed for all ages, each was different, and they could be tailored to suit individual patients, said Galan.

Patients fromthe Middle East come especially to Marbella for Age Management Medicine treatment while on vacation and they continue with it once back home, he added.

Theres an increasing number of patients from the Middle East. I actually love to have them, because they know so much! In general, they are well aware of their health, what they can do to improve it and they have tried several strategies, several clinics and treatments to feel. They come with something theyve read or heard about or even tried, that provides us witha challenge, Galan said.

One patient, Marianna, currently undergoing an AMM program, said: My experience (of AMM) has been a turning point in my life. It has positively changed my whole mind and body, and I feel stronger physically and mentally.

Another 60-year-old patient said: Ive been in treatment for nineyears now, and before I used to be tired all day, it was hard for me to keep up with my work and family. I gained extra weight,I had lack of sleep, I was forgetting things and I was not concentrating much.

After doing a complete check-up, they gave me a treatment with various supplements, and different hormones. Everything has gotten better since then, my biological age now is sixyears less than what my ID shows, they added.

Many residents of homeless camp in Morgantown say they dont want to leave – WBOY.com

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. A homeless encampment along Deckers Creek, which has roughly 31 residents, will be closed July 18, but the decision is not sitting well with many residents.

The camp has been a source of controversy in the Greenmont neighborhood, where its located, because many people think its residents disturb the peace and are not leading a healthy lifestyle while living there. In response, the City of Morgantown, in conjunction with Monongalia County officials and social service nonprofits, like the West Virginia Coalition to End Homelessness, teamed up to form a task force with the goal of finding permanent and temporary housing solutions for the camps residents. So far, more than a dozen people have been relocated, Emily Muzzarelli, the interim city manager, said, and those who are left can take advantage of shelters like Bartlett House. However, that solution isnt ideal for some camp residents.

We have people that refuse to leave because they believe that this is their home, and we know that its going to be hard for us to leave because everybody needs a place to stay, Denita Benton said.

Benton said she has been a resident at the camp for about a month, and she wants to move, but is hesitant because she has health problems. In addition, she said she has a strong sense of camaraderie with other camp residents.

This is a sentiment that was shared by many of the people at the camp on Friday afternoon, one day before they have to vacate. Christopher McCoy, who has lived at the camp for about one-and-a-half months, explained why he does not want to move.

Because of friends, family. Its a place to live. Because we have nowhere else to go. I really dont want to move because this is home.

A woman, who only gave her first name as Tonya and said she had also been at the camp for about a month-and-a-half, echoed McCoys sentiment about not wanting to leave.

Friends and family, friends and family that Ive made. I came out of here for a reason. Everyone needs support. Everyone needs family.

Another thing that McCoy said that Tonya related to was the sense that there is nowhere else to go. While many former residents had been provided housing solutions, there are still many people at the camp and throughout the city who need a place, as well, so they should not be forced to move, Tonya said.

However, their point isnt entirely accurate, because as mentioned earlier, the Citys task force has provided options like Bartlett House.

We provide a variety of services. We have our emergency triage center downtown, which if people need a place to stay, theyre able to stay there, Keri DeMasi, chief executive officer and executive director of Bartlett Housing Solutions said. Theres also a case manager down there that will work with them for finding a housing plan so that they can get out of there quickly into housingpermanent housing placement.

But, Bartlett House is a place Tonya, McCoy and Benton said they refuse to stay. They cited secondhand accounts of discrimination based on race and gender, as well as generally unpleasant behavior from the staff.

But this is a narrative that DeMasi is strongly pushing back on, stating such unsubstantiated claims can be very detrimental to nonprofits like Bartlett Housing Solutions.

The only thing that Ive asked is to give us the opportunity to look into that allegation before they go out there because we dont recover from things like that, and I take those things very seriously, DeMasi said. I dont take my staff members voice as gospel any more than I take a clients word for gospel. I have a professional responsibility to look into every single complaint, allegation, grievance, whatever word you want to call it, thoroughly, and come to a decision, whether thats in our favor or against us, and I take that responsibility very seriously.

Only time will tell if the residents will refuse to leave the camp or not, and if those vehemently opposed to staying at Bartlett House will change their minds. Muzzarelli said one thing is for sure.

If people refuse to move, that is up to the property owner to take legal action to get individuals off the property, no different than anybody elses property, Muzzarelli said.

Eye ailments among kids up, excess screen time to blame – The Tribune India

Sukhmeet BhasinTribune News ServiceBathinda, July 17

There is a surge in the number of students and teachers visiting eye specialists for the past couple of months due to the conduct of online classes by educational institutes.

The lockdown from March forced schools to shift to online classes to ensure that the syllabus was completed, but now, the excessive use of different mobile and computer applications for these classes is throwing up a new range of issues. This is a cause of worry for many parents because children spend extra hours on phones and laptops.

Eat fruit, veggies

Giving rest to eyes at equal intervals, eating fresh fruit and vegetables and regular check-up are some of the dietary habits that must be adopted by children, said Dr Vitul K Gupta, a health expert. Doctors are also advising that children below three years should not attend any online classes.

Bathinda-based eye specialist and surgeon Dr HS Sodhi said, Cases are definitely rising and some are even detected with computer vision syndrome. Last week alone, I have seen around five to 10 cases of children and teachers with issues of blurring of vision, dry eyes and headache. Most of the time, we find children keeping the gadgets close to their eyes. This is harmful for eye muscles. When they put excessive effort, it causes blurring of vision.

City doctors said they were getting queries from parents on how to keep eyes of their children safe. Gurleen Kaur, mother of a Class V student, said, I have to give my child a phone for the first half of the day for studies. He doesnt have any option as online classes are going on and if we do not do so, he will miss his studies.

Dr Vitul K Gupta, a health expert, said, Eye strain is among the most common problems. Some of its symptoms include irritation, excessive blinking, frequent rubbing of eyes, dry eyes, headache from eye strain and even tiredness. Parents must be extremely careful on how the child spends time online.

He said parents could encourage healthy lifestyle habits among their children which in turn would benefit their eyes too. Giving rest to eyes at equal intervals, eating fresh fruit and vegetables and regular check-up are some of the good dietary habits.

Doctors are also advising that children below three years should not attend any online class and those between four and six years should have only 90 minutes of online teaching with a break in between.

Children between seven and 12 should have up to four hours of lessons with two or three breaks while those up to the age of 16 should have up toeight hours of lessons,if required, butwith several breaks and a long lunch break.

Despite the enormous amount of attention and dedication to the subject, mankind still has a lot to learn. Just this week, I watched the Netflix show titled Down-To -Earth featuring celebrity host Zac Efron. Upon watching the documentary, it clearly demonstrates with laser focus the importance of food, water and energy to sustain the planet. As I watched the show, I became absorbed in learning how good living is imperative in looking good and feeling productive.

Change is from the inside and maybe at this point in time, we all have to change. Tracking down Richard Lin, the co-founder and CEO of Thryve was not an easy task but it was most certainly worth the effort. My session with him was quite revealing. He believes through his beauty, health and well-being analysis that he can ensure a better path to life and a positive way to look good and feel greatespecially with respect to corporate ascension.

Launched in 2016, Thryve is focused on ensuring the availability of subscription-based customized testing of the microbiome with a personalized probiotic that any individual can use to have actionable insight into their health status and the prevention of chronic diseases. What is Thryve all about? Who is Richard Lin?

During COVID-19, I couldnt have wished for a more opportune time than this to discuss beauty and health with him. A time the world is engulfed in the distress of COVID-19 and people have faced one form of a lockdown or the other. People still want to look and feel good. Moisturizers, face-creams, vitamins are all part of a healthy regime. The brand has it as a mission to empower you to take charge of your Health so you can feel your greatest. With a quality resource team, Thryve has been able to utilize artificial intelligence (natural language processing and machine learning) in order to summarize 50,000+ research articles on the microbiome to make the science accessible and easy-to-understand.

Richard Lin

JD: Who are you and what inspired you to start Thryve?

Richard Lin: About 4 years ago, I took antibiotics and came down with a nasty superbug called Clostridium Difficile. I had gone to multiple different doctors only to have my symptoms dismissed because I was too young and healthy looking to be sick. Through this process, I started reading scientific literature and engaging with other folks with chronic disease in Facebook Groups and Online Forums. Through my research, I asked my fourth doctor to get a DNA test to check for overgrowth of Clostridium Difficile which came back positive. I had that treated through more antibiotics and eventually a fecal transplant which resolved my symptoms.

In going through this journey, I realized that most consumers did not have a good idea what a microbiome is, why their microbiome matters, and ultimately what they can do to change it to improve their health. Thats why I started Thryve. The microbiome are the trillions of bacteria, yeast, and viruses that reside in our gut, skin, mouth, and more that science has shown to be correlated to many of the chronic and modern diseases we see in the west.

My background was in software and data science at large fortune 500 companies like SAP and startups like Deliv (acquired by Target), so I utilized these skills to bring together a scientific team that could get a product to market that was affordable and accessible for everyday consumers.

JD: Beauty enthusiasts would like to know if probiotics are any good for them, what are the skincare benefits of using probiotics?

Kimberly Griffith MS Human Nutrition and Functional Medicine and Thryves Clinical Researcher Partner: The concept of beauty from within is highly supported by the gut-skin axis. Probiotics encourage a healthy and balanced gut microflora that directly impacts skin health by reducing inflammation, preventing pathogenic growth, and increasing skin hydration and strength. Specifically, clinical evidence presents the positive role that probiotics provide in preventing and managing chronic skin conditions such as acne, eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, wound healing, and dandruff. However, the positive effects of probiotics are not limited to chronic skin conditions, probiotics have shown to combat accelerated skin aging and assist in the prevention of premature aging. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in the Journal of Microbiology and Biotechnology confirmed the anti-aging benefits exerted by probiotics which resulted in improved skin elasticity, decreased wrinkle depth, skin gloss, and increased skin hydration. The growing body of clinical evidence continues to support the beneficial role probiotics play in managing and maintaining overall skin health.

Specialized Probiotics for beauty and health

JD: Talk to Forbes about your companys History, Development, and Projection.

Richard Lin: Thryves origin story is like any tech darling. We started out in the kitchen and slowly expanded to our own facilities over the course of 3 years. Weve raised from venture-capitalist and strategic venture arms such as Unilever Ventures, PivotNorth Capital, TrailMix Ventures, Darling Ventures, Plug and Play Ventures, Unpopular Ventures, Joyance Partners, Social Starts, Shanda Group, Pharmapacks, and Bioverge

Our product which includes a microbiome DNA test, digital app (health report, customized food plan), and personalized probiotics is the worlds first customized solution to target gut health. Weve utilized artificial intelligence (natural language processing and machine learning) in order to summarize 50,000+ research articles on the microbiome to make the science accessible and easy-to-understand. Weve done this with the help of our scientific advisor board from the likes of MIT, Stanford, Harvard, Purdue, and UC Davis.

The future of healthcare which I like to call going from health 1.0 (reactive) to health 2.0 (predictive, personalized, and preventative) will be realized by using omics / DNA in order to prevent chronic disease from happening in the future.

Our goal going into 2021 and 2022 is to offer multiple site-wide microbiome testing (vaginal, infant/child, skin, oral) and build the omics platform as a service with genomics (human DNA) and exposomics (environmental toxins).

JD: Why do you think people should consider using probiotics?

Richard Lin: Science has shown that probiotics when taken in adequate amounts can have far reaching health benefits such as positively affecting gut related infections and diseases, food and environmental allergies and intolerances, immune support, intestinal barrier strength, microbial imbalances, skin related issues, hypercholesterolemia, anxiety and depression, and weight management.

A recent article reviewing probiotics in treatment and disease prevention in the Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, stated Few treatments for human diseases have received as much investigation in the past 20 years as probiotics. Additionally, they concluded when given in adequate quantities for sufficient periods of time, are beneficial in many human disease conditions and safer than most pharmaceuticals. (Liu, et al., 2018)

As stated by Sarah Daniels Ph.D., Lead Research Scientist at Thryve: A clinical review published in Therapeutic Advances in Gastroenterology, confirmed the efficacy and beneficial effects of Saccharomyces boulardii as a probiotic for the therapy and prevention of disorders within the gastrointestinal tract. Probiotic strains such as Lactobacillus acidophilus CL 1285, L. casei Lbc80r, L. rhamnosus CLR2 alongside Saccharomyces boulardii I-745 and L. casei DN114001 have shown effective in preventing antibiotic-associated diarrhea. (Sniffen, et al., 2018). Probiotic efficacy is not limited to the gut. A recent study published within Diabetology & Metabolic Syndrome, presented evidence suggesting the therapeutic role of a probiotic such as Lactobacillus casei 01 positively affecting weight management and glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes. (Khalili, et al., 2019)

That said, probiotics would be a shot in the dark if purchasing from your local grocery store. A couple of items to consider

1) what strains are in the probiotics, this will determine the actual health benefits

2) total amount of CFUs (Colony Forming Units), which determines the potency

3) prebiotic additives, which are indigestible fibers or sugars that feed probiotics to help them proliferate and growth for added benefits

4) source of ingredients, most probiotics need to be refrigerated or they expire. Although your store bought variety may be in the refrigerated aisle, it may been delivered in a high temperature storage facility like a truck or warehouse

Beauty starts with good skin

JD: What differentiates Thryve from every other probiotic company out there?

Richard Lin: 3 things:

Natural/Beauty Skin: Model With Probiotic

JD: What are some changes your company is making and how are you happy about those changes?

Richard Lin: The first 2 years in Thryve, I had never truly focused on culture. More specifically, what are the values of our business and who do we want to hire that upholds these same values. When I first started the company, I hired folks who looked great on paper, but just weren't a good fit with the culture I had internally thought about, but never externally expressed in voice or writing.

Over the course of 2020, Ive been highly vocal on our company values (growth mindset, clear accountability, customer obsession, and speed as a habit) and put into the process to continue to remind our team why we do what we do. I believe this is such an important change in any company, since companies are made up of people and the goal is to have everyone rowing in the same direction (mission).

More specifically, we enacted these changes from the start of the hiring process. When we interview candidates for new positions we hone in on our core values to ensure everyone we bring on is a good fit for our culture. Post-hiring, we set up bi-monthly performance reviews with quantitative and qualitative bi-directional (managers to employees and vice versa) feedback around these values to review where weve done well and where we need to improve. This has built a great feedback loop and positive camaraderie between the team.

JD: Do you think probiotics are any good for weight loss or weight gain?

Sarah Daniels Ph.D. and Thryves Lead Research Scientist:

Recently, the relationship between probiotics and weight change has been of great interest. Seminal work in this field has demonstrated that obese and non-obese gut microbiome profiles differ in both animal models and in humans. Given the current obesity epidemic, many studies have focused on the effects of probiotics on weight loss. However, a probiotic supplement alone may not confer full reversal of obesity. Previous research examining the direct effects of probiotics on weight loss has shown mixed results. These studies cannot always be compared side-by-side as participant demographics (e.g., age, baseline weight) and the probiotics tested vary from study to study. Overall, this field is in its infancy stages. More human studies using large sample sizes, rigorous randomized control trials, and multi-pronged approaches (i.e., incorporating diet, probiotics, and lifestyle changes) will help determine whether probiotics play a role in weight change.

America’s COVID data will go straight to the White House – here’s what it means for us – The Big Smoke Australia

With the White House diminishing the role of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the risk for the rest of us is obvious.

On April 22, CDC director Robert Redfield stood at the White House briefing room lectern and conceded that the coronavirus pandemic had overwhelmed the United States. Following Redfield at the podium, President Donald Trump said the CDC director had been totally misquoted in his warning that COVID-19 would continue to pose serious difficulties as the US moved into its winter flu season in late 2020.

Invited to clarify, Redfield confirmed he had been quoted correctly in giving his opinion that there were potentially difficult and complicated times ahead.

Trump tried a different tack. You may not even have corona coming back, the president said, once again contradicting the career virologist. Just so you understand.

The exchange was interpreted by some pundits as confirmation that the CDCs venerated expertise had been sidelined as the coronavirus continued to ravage the US.

In the latest development, the New York Times reported this week the CDC has even been bypassed in its data collection, with the Trump administration ordering hospitals to send COVID-19 data directly to the White House.

When facing previous public health emergencies, the CDC was a hive of activity, holding regular press briefings and developing guidance that was followed by governments around the world.

Nancy Messonnier, director of the CDCs National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, predicted on February 25 that the virus was not contained and would grow into a pandemic.

The stock market plunged and Messonnier was removed from future White House press briefings. Between March 9 and June 12 there was no CDC presence at White House press briefings on COVID-19.

The CDC has erred during the pandemic, most significantly in its initial efforts to develop a test for COVID-19. The testing kits proved to be faulty a problem compounded by sluggish efforts to rectify the situation and then by severe delays in distributing enough tests to the public.

But many public health specialists are nevertheless baffled by the CDCs low profile as the pandemic continues to sweep the globe.

They have been sidelined, said Howard Koh, former US assistant secretary for health. We need their scientific leadership right now.

The CDC being bypassed in the collection of COVID-19 data is another body blow to the agencys standing.

The Department of Health and Human Services, which issued the new order, says the change will help the White Houses coronavirus task force allocate resources. But epidemiologists and public health experts around the world fear the new system will make it harder for people outside the White House to track the pandemic or access information.

This affects all nations, because one of the CDCs roles is to provide sound, independent public health guidance on issues such as infectious diseases, healthy living, travel health, emergency and disaster preparedness, and drug efficacy. Other jurisdictions can then adapt this information to their local context expertise that has become even more essential during a pandemic, when uncertainty is the norm.

It is difficult to recall a previous public health emergency when political pressure led to a change in the interpretation of scientific evidence.

Despite the inevitable challenges that come with tackling a pandemic in real-time, the CDC remains the best-positioned agency not just in the US but the entire world to help us manage this crisis as safely as possible.

In the absence of US leadership, nations should start thinking about developing their own national centres for disease control. In Australias case, these discussions have been ongoing since the 1990s, stymied by cost and lack of political will.

COVID-19, and the current sidelining of the CDC, may be the impetus needed to finally dust off those plans and make them a reality.

Why antioxidants are so important to your overall health – Insider – INSIDER

Antioxidants have generated quite the buzz in recent years as a category of substances known to delay cell damage. While research indicates that antioxidants can reduce inflammation, it's still unclear exactly how this correlates with overall health.

Plus, antioxidant supplements aren't necessary if you're eating a healthy diet, and can be dangerous in some cases. For example, too much beta-carotene the chemical that makes carrots and sweet potatoes orange can increase the risk of cancer if you smoke.

In this article, we discuss what researchers know so far about the role of antioxidants and how to get enough in your diet.

Antioxidants are substances found in plant foods, such as fruits, vegetables, pulses, coffee, and tea, along with supplements. They're essential to your health because antioxidants can prevent or delay cell damage caused by free radicals.

Free radicals are a normal byproduct of human life. For example, you produce them naturally in the form of lactic acid when you exercise. Free radicals can also come from outside sources like cigarette smoke, air pollution, certain medications, and sunlight.

The problem with free radicals is that they bind to cells in such a way that they damage the protein and DNA inside. However, that threat can be neutralized by antioxidants. That's why it's important to continually consume antioxidants in order to counter free radical damage in your body.

When you have too many free radicals running amok, it can cause cell damage particularly in cell membranes, fatty tissue, DNA, and proteins in the form of oxidative stress, which is associated with a number of diseases including:

However, just because antioxidants in the body can stave off oxidative stress doesn't mean that consuming antioxidants specifically can reduce your risk of disease.

There's no definitive answer to whether or not consuming antioxidants, either through food or supplements, reduces cancer risk or improves heart health, says Tim Spector, MD, FRCP, FRSB, a professor of genetic epidemiology at King's College London. And any product marketing that says otherwise is pushing a wellness agenda that's not backed by research.

Ultimately, the health benefits associated with antioxidants likely goes hand-in-hand with the benefits of eating a diet rich in whole foods and leading a healthy lifestyle.

Scientists do know that antioxidants can help reduce inflammation, a process by which white blood cells protect your body from outside invaders like bacteria and viruses. When cells are damaged by an overabundance of free radicals, an inflammatory response can occur.

Your body naturally produces some helpful antioxidants in the form of glutathione and alpha lipoic acid. But you can also get antioxidants from your diet. Fruits, vegetables, and coffee are all rich in antioxidants.

There are thought to be hundreds, if not thousands, of substances that act as antioxidants. Antioxidants include vitamins like vitamin C, vitamin E, and beta-carotene as well as minerals like selenium and manganese. They exist in many foods, from blueberries to dark chocolate.

A 2010 study, published in Nutrition Journal, looked at the antioxidant content of more than 3,100 foods, beverages, spices, herbs, and supplements, and found that a plant-based diet is best for protecting against oxidative stress. That's because plant-based foods have from 5 to 33 times more antioxidant content than meat products. According to the same study, some antioxidant-rich foods are:

Spector says it's important to note that there is no single, antioxidant-rich superfood out there. Therefore, eating the recommended five servings per day of fruits and vegetables is the best way to help ensure you're getting all the antioxidants you need.

You can also take antioxidant supplements, there is limited evidence supporting the benefits of consuming antioxidants in the form of supplements.

For example, a 2010 meta-analysis on antioxidant research, published in Research in Pharmaceutical Sciences, noted that multiple large scale randomized clinical trials found no reduced risk for cardiovascular events in people who took antioxidant supplements.

And for a 2011 review article in Oxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity, researchers reporter that supplemental antioxidants may not offer the same sufficient protection as an antioxidant-rich diet from whole foods.

In fact, it can be difficult to disentangle the direct health benefits of antioxidants from the other nutrients in foods where they occur. Spector notes that antioxidants work best when consumed as whole foods in the form of vegetables, fruits, and legumes, for example.

Beyond diet, other healthy lifestyle choices like avoiding exposure to cigarette smoke and air pollutants, can reduce your risk of oxidative stress.

‘The Good Place’ Cast May Have Unlocked the Secret to Ted Danson’s Success – Showbiz Cheat Sheet

When it comes to the cast of The Good Place, each of the six main actors bought incredible talent to the hit NBC comedy. But, though they are all talented, Kristen Bell (Eleanor), DArcy Carden (Janet), William Jackson Harper (Chidi), Jameela Jamil (Tahani), and Manny Jacinto (Jason) all seem to be in awe of Ted Danson (Michael). Considered a veteran in the industry, Danson has a resume that would make plenty of actors envious.

Danson is the epitome of what it means to have a career with longevity. Prior to joining the cast of The Good Place, hed been working in film and television for over 40 years. At 72 years old, Danson shows no signs of stopping anytime soon and has a new role lined up which is set to premiere in 2021. But what is the secret to his success?

In an interview with Rolling Stone, the cast of The Good Place talked about what its like to work closely with Danson. They all spoke very highly of the Cheers alum and identified some key qualities that likely contribute to his success. Funnily enough, Dansons success might have a lot to do with simply being a good person. Naturally, his talent speaks for itself. But, (according to his castmates) Danson is also incredibly giving, supportive, respectful, and just downright fun.

RELATED: Jameela Jamil Calls Out Kim Kardashian Again and Fans Are Confused

In the interview, Carden gushed about how Danson always made her feel supported in scenes no matter what. In the 7th episode of the first season of The Good Place, Carden had to do Janets best approximation of human crying. As she was in front of a huge crowd of extras, she felt a bit uncomfortable and self-conscious about the situation. Sensing her discomfort, Danson decided to join Carden for a take to make her feel more at ease.

We turned to each other one take and grabbed each others hands, and did the cry up into the heavens together. It was so refreshing, his way of being like, I got your back. Im here with you. Ill go where you go. And from that moment on, you forget that he is the legendary Ted Danson. Youre just like, Oh, this is just the best scene partner I could possibly have. Hes just down for whatever. He loves to play. So whatever you give him, he will return it. Its incredible, Carden gushed about her fellow castmate of The Good Place.

Harper also echoed Cardens thoughts stating that Danson always helps to create an incredibly welcoming environment that is enjoyable for all. Theres a reason that people like him continue to work. Because you want to come to work and enjoy it. You want to come to work and like the people that youre with. And thats something that, he sets the tone in so many ways. Hes like, Im Ted fu*king Damson but were all going to be fu*king ladies and gentlemen here. And were going to treat each other with respect, and were going to laugh. Were going to make jokes, and were going to be kind, The Good Place alum stated about Danson.

Clearly, Dansons fellow castmates had nothing but nice things to say about him. Its great that he is able to help create such warm environments for his fellow actors. Perhaps thats what helped The Good Place cast give such compelling performances. We look forward to seeing what other projects Danson gets up to in the future.

Study of Over 1 Million People Finds Intriguing Link Between Iron Levels And Lifespan – ScienceAlert

A massive new study has found evidence that blood iron levels could play a role in influencing how long you live.

It's always important to take longevity studies with a big grain of salt, but the new research is impressive in its breadth, covering genetic information from well over 1 million people across three public databases. It also focused on three key measures of ageing: lifespan, years lived free of disease (referred to as healthspan), and making it to an extremely old age (AKA longevity).

Throughout the analysis, 10 key regions of the genome were shown to be related to these measures of long life, as were gene sets linked to how the body metabolises iron.

Put simply, having too much iron in the blood appeared to be linked to an increased risk of dying earlier.

"We are very excited by these findings as they strongly suggest that high levels of iron in the blood reduces our healthy years of life, and keeping these levels in check could prevent age-related damage," says data analyst Paul Timmers, from the University of Edinburgh in the UK.

"We speculate that our findings on iron metabolism might also start to explain why very high levels of iron-rich red meat in the diet has been linked to age-related conditions such as heart disease."

While correlation doesn't necessarily mean causation, the researchers used a statistical technique called Mendelian randomisation to reduce bias and attempt to infer causation in the data.

As the researchers note, genetics are thought to have around a 10 percent influence on lifespan and healthspan, and that can make it difficult to pick out the genes involved from all the other factors involved (like your smoking or drinking habits). With that in mind, one of the advantages of this new study is its sheer size and scope.

Five of the genetic markers the researchers found had not previously been highlighted as significant at the genome-wide level. Some, including APOE and FOXO3, have been singled out in the past as being important to the ageing process and human health.

"It is clear from the association of age-related diseases and the well-known ageing loci APOE and FOXO3 that we are capturing the human ageing process to some extent," write the researchers in their published paper.

While we're still in the early stages for investigating this association with iron metabolism, further down the line we could see the development of drugs designed to lower the levels of iron in the blood - which could potentially add extra years to our lives.

Besides genetics, blood iron is mostly controlled by diet and has already been linked to a number of age-related diseases, including Parkinson's and liver disease. It also affects our body's ability to fight off infection as we get older.

We can add this latest study to the growing evidence that 'iron overload', or not being able to break it down properly, can have an influence on how long we're likely to live, as well as how healthy we're likely to be in our later years.

"Our ultimate aim is to discover how ageing is regulated and find ways to increase health during ageing," says Joris Deelenwho studies the biology of ageing at the Max Planck Institute for Biology of Ageing in Germany.

"The 10 regions of the genome we have discovered that are linked to lifespan, healthspan, and longevity are all exciting candidates for further studies."

The research has been published in Nature Communications.

Pastor Wilson Shares the Most Effective Way to be a Messenger of Christ – Adventist Review

July 17, 2020

TedN.C. Wilson

Hello, Friends!

I hope that you have had a good week, and that you were able to join us recently for the virtual launch ofI Will Goa rallying call for Total Member Involvement in reaching the world for Christ!

Today, we will look at one of the most effective ways of being a messenger for Christ. In fact, this method goes all the way back to the prophet Daniel and his three friends, when they were taken captive to Babylon.

As we read in Daniel, chapter 1, these young men were no ordinary captivesthey were Hebrew nobility, good-looking, gifted in wisdom, possessing knowledge, and quick to understand. They had the ability to serve in the kings palace, and King Nebuchadnezzar was determined they would receive the best education his kingdom offeredand a diet filled with fine delicacies and free-flowing fermented wine.

No doubt these four young Hebrews were flattered by the kings generosity, however, instead of eating from the royal table, they requested a very simple, plant-based diet, and pure water to drink.

We are told in the bookProphets and Kingsthat Daniel and his associates had been trained by their parents to habits of strict temperance. They had been taught that God would hold them accountable for their capabilities, and that they must never dwarf or enfeeble their powers. This education was to Daniel and his companions the means of their preservation amidst the demoralizing influences of the court of Babylon (p. 482).

Is temperance important? Does it really matter what we put into our bodies, and how we live? It certainly mattered for Daniel and his friends, and I believe it does for us today. For you see, following a healthy lifestyle not only strengthens our minds and bodies, but serves as a powerfulwitness to others.

God wants everyone to be healthyphysically and emotionally, as well as spiritually! We read in 3 John 2, Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.

And how wonderful that in the Bible and the Spirit of Prophecy, God has given clear instructions onhowto live healthfullyshowing us what is best to eat, to drink, how to care for our bodies, and much more. These divine instructions, given long ago, have proven effective in bringing better health to many, and have been verified by numerous scientific studies. Lets briefly review some of these important life-giving principles.

As Adventists, we believe that eating a plant-based diet filled with legumes, nuts, whole grains and fresh produce provides a sturdy foundation for good health. Many scientific studies have verified the benefits of eating a plant-based diet.

Staying away from mind-altering substances like tobacco, alcohol, and illicit drugs is important for keeping our minds and bodies healthy.

Drinking plenty of waterat least 8 glasses per dayhelps clear our minds and rid our bodies of impurities.

Getting regular exercise in the sunlight and fresh air can boost your mental outlook as well as strengthen body and mind. I try to walk for at least 1 hour outside every day!

Rest is also important, and even though it may be tempting to short-change our sleep, studies have shown that adults need from 7 to 9 hours of sleep every night, and children and youth may need even more.

Not only is physical rest important, but each week God invites us to partake of the special spiritual rest that He provides every Sabbathreminding us to rest from our labors and trust in Him.

Living a healthy, balanced lifephysically, mentally, and spirituallyis a wonderful way to allow the love of Jesus to shine through us as we follow His example in being a blessing to the world. If you would like to learn more about living a healthy lifestyle, or to share what you have learned with others, I encourage you to download a free copy of the bookHealth & Wellness: Secrets That Will Change Your Lifeby Pastor Mark Finley and Dr. Peter Landless. You may download this book at the URL shown at the bottom of the screen.

Friends, Jesus tells us in John 10:10 that He came that we might have life, and that we might have itmore abundantly. He invites us to enjoy living that more abundant life through His grace and power today!

I invite you to pray with me just now.

Father in heaven, we ask now that You will guide everyone listening and viewing right now. Help them to know that You are the God who created them, the God who sustains them, and the God that wants them to live life abundantly on this earth, and in preparation for eternal life. Thank You for Your health principles. Thank You for health reform. Thank You for the opportunity of not only living it by Your grace through Your instruction, but also sharing it with others because we know that health is so important to not only physical health, but to spiritual health. Thank You for hearing us. In Christs name, amen.

Guest View: Fight COVID-19: Wear your mask, eat healthy and move more – Seacoastonline.com

As we continue to experience the first wave of COVID-19, preliminary data clearly reveals that severe infections are impacting some people more than others. The elderly, people of color, individuals with chronic health conditions, and people living with excess weight have endured a higher rate of hospitalization and death. Two things that will help all of us are: 1.) continuing to wear our face masks, and 2.) working on maintaining our own health through physical activity and healthy eating.

While the relationship of weight and COVID-19 is not fully understood, most medical professionals believe it involves a myriad of factors. Patients with obesity (BMI >30) have higher resistance in their airways, making it difficult to take a deep breath. This impact on breathing becomes a set-up for pneumonia, which can trigger a cascade of events, and increase the risk for hospitalization, potentially in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). In addition, excess weight and obesity greatly increase the risk of pre-diabetes, diabetes and high blood pressure, making us more susceptible to infection.

Obesity has been on the rise nationwide for decades. Per the CDC, the percentage of adults considered obese has increased from 30% to 42% over the last 20 years. Severe obesity (BMI >40) nearly doubled in the same time period.

Why have we seen such an alarming jump in numbers in just the last 20 years? There are a wide range of factors that contribute to the rise of obesity. As Americans, our diets exceed the recommended intake levels or limits in four categories: calories from solid fats and added sugars, refined grains, sodium, and saturated fat. Eighty percent of us do not meet the physical activity and strength training recommendations for healthy living. We have too many unhealthy food options and not enough recreation opportunities in our communities, and our healthcare system focuses more resources on treating medical problems rather than preventing them.

Experts in the field of obesity and metabolic medicine understand this is a complex disease with elements of genetics, behaviors, and the environment all playing a role in each individual patients weight. In addition, there is significant stigma, creating barriers to reaching out for help. In my experience as a family doctor, people have a strong desire to protect their health and to live at a healthy weight. Virtually all have worked to achieve a healthy weight over the years - they can tell you that it isnt easy.

The great news is that science-based options do exist: 30 minutes of physical activity five days a week, five servings of fruits and vegetables a day, and eliminating sugary drinks are important steps any of us can take toward living at a healthy weight. In addition, medically supervised programs that provide education, structure, and monitoring to revitalize peoples health are highly effective. Behavioral modification through proper nutrition and exercise are pillars of any weight loss plan and are often more successful with the support of trained professionals. The use of FDA-approved medications can often be a helpful adjunct, especially in the beginning of the programs, providing patients with a much-needed boost. Ultimately, for some patients, surgery may also play a role.

COVID-19 continues to impact our communities and our country. I am confident that we will develop vaccines and therapeutics at some point that will help mitigate its spread. For now, we should all do what we can to fight it: wear our face masks, practice good hand hygiene, socially distance, eat healthy, and move more. It is time to get fit to fight COVID-19.

Concerns about the coronavirus (COVID-19) should not keep you from maintaining your health. We are taking extra precautions to ensure both you and our staff are protected.
