Sean Swarner Leads 18th Climb to Kilimanjaro to Memorialize Those Touched by Cancer – PR Web

CancerClimber Association

DENVER (PRWEB) July 22, 2020

Sean Swarner, 2x cancer survivor, world-record holder, and co-founder of The CancerClimber Association (CCA) will embark on his 18th climb to Mount Kilimanjaro at the end of July with another group of cancer survivors and hikers. Every year, the cohort of CCA climbers will bring a HOPE flag that carries the names of friends and family members who have been touched by cancer. The hikers post the flag at the summit where it remains for thousands of people to see.

The flag is also how you can be a part of the team and a part of the climb. By making a donation you can include the name of a loved one, friend, or anyone you know who has been touched by cancer to this years flag, memorializing them forever on the roof of Africa.

To include a name on the flag, you can donate as little as $1. For those who donate $50 or more, their team will send you a signed photo of their team with the flag at the top of Mount Kilimanjaro. For those who donate $100 or more, they will receive the inclusion of loved ones names on the flag, the signed photo, and a copy of the HOPE flag.

All of us are alive, but not everyone is truly living, says Sean Swarner, Explorer Grand Slam Achiever, World Ironman Championship Competitor, and lifelong adventurer. After surviving cancer twice and learning how fleeting our time is on earth, it has been my greatest joy to now give others the hope that kept me - and continues to keep me - fighting because without hope we have nothing."

Donate and submit the names of those you know who were touched by cancer here:https://charity.gofundme.com/o/en/campaign/climbing-kilimanjaro-for-cancer-2020

Each year prior to the start of the climb, the team raises money for the following year. The funds cover the cost for a cancer survivor to join their team on the journey to the top. 100% of the funds go to CancerClimbers Adventure Support Grant (ensuring future survivors this amazing, fully-funded trip of a lifetime!), development of their mobile camp for young adults with cancer, personal visits to patients to inspire HOPE, and inspiring all those touched by cancer to focus on living.

A Staggering 21TB of Source Code Were Just Buried in The Arctic For an Unknown Future – ScienceAlert

If doomsday comes, know this: precautions have been taken. On an isolated Arctic archipelago, the Svalbard Global Seed Vault aka Norway's 'Doomsday Vault' holds over 1 million seed samples in a fortress-like bunker designed to be the most invulnerable seed bank in the world.

Svalbard protects more than just seeds, though. On the same remote mountain, an abandoned coal mine now exists as another vital safe-house: the Arctic World Archive, preserving the world's data of today for an uncertain tomorrow. And the facility just received a contribution that's truly mind-boggling in scope.

GitHub, often billed as the world's largest host of open source code, has successfully transported all of its active public code repositories (as of February this year) to the Arctic World Archive, as part of the company's ongoing efforts to establish the GitHub Arctic Code Vault.

(GitHub)

"Our mission is to preserve open source software for future generations by storing your code in an archive built to last a thousand years," Julia Metcalf, GitHub's director of strategic programs, explains on the company's blog.

The project, first announced last year, already saw one shipment to Svalbard in late 2019, with a deposit of 6,000 of the platform's most significant repositories of open source code.

The new shipment, painstakingly managed during the shutdowns and border closures of the coronavirus pandemic, goes even further, preserving a massive haul amounting to 21 terabytes of data, written onto 186 reels of a digital archival film called piqlFilm.

This purpose-built media designed to last for 500 years, with simulations suggesting it should last twice as long is now stored 250 metres deep, in a steel-walled container inside a sealed chamber in the Arctic World Archive.

The film, composed of silver halides on polyester, looks like a miniaturised print of QR codes, except every frame squeezes in some 8.8 million microscopic pixels, and each reel runs for almost 1 kilometre (about 3,500 ft), such is the gargantuan size of the data being stored.

(GitHub/YouTube)

"It can withstand extreme electromagnetic exposure and has undergone extensive longevity and accessibility testing," the piql company claims.

It's hoped that this extremely long-life media in conjunction with the Archive's natural isolation and engineered security will give the world's open source software the best chance of seeing a distant future where it may one day be needed by upcoming generations.

"It is easy to envision a future in which today's software is seen as a quaint and long-forgotten irrelevancy, until an unexpected need for it arises," the GitHub Archive website explains.

"Like any backup, the GitHub Archive Program is also intended for currently unforeseeable futures as well."

In those unforeseeable futures, it's hard to know exactly what future humans will make of the archive's coded contents, or how they might be able to access and use them.

For that reason, the vault will also contain a separate, human-readable reel, called the Tech Tree, explaining the technical history and cultural context of the archive's contents.

The Tech Tree won't just throw future humans into the world of 21st century open source code, but serve as a primer for what these programs are, and what kind of technology they run on.

"It will also include works which explain the many layers of technical foundations that make software possible: microprocessors, networking, electronics, semiconductors, and even pre-industrial technologies," Metcalf explains.

"This will allow the archive's inheritors to better understand today's world and its technologies, and may even help them recreate computers to use the archived software."

Bee a happy and healthy skipper at Cliffe Castle – Keighley News

EVEN beekeepers are joining in with Keighley Healthy Living's campaign to get the town skipping.

A member of Airedale Bee Keepers joined in the filming of the charity's latest video designed to encourage people to take up the healthy exercise.

The film shoot was at Cliffe Castle, and the museum's mascot Bracewell the Dragon and members of Cliffe Castle Support Group also joined in the fun.

The Support Group handed KHL a donation to help pay for rope for new skipping ropes, to go with handles being created by members of the Lion's Den Men's Shed social group at Cliffe Castle.

Skipping ropes are being given out all summer as part of KHL's lockdown resource kits for local families.

Support Group spokesman Elaine Cooper said: "We want to encourage people of all ages to skip at Cliffe Castle as its a beautiful place to practice with a long rope as a team, individually with shorter ropes; while running or walking or on the spot."

KHL was inspired to make it skipping videos by Shirley Holmes, aged 83, who was sharing her daily exercise routine that included skipping.

A KHL spokesman said funding for the ropes had come from various organisations including Keighley Town Council.

She added: "We linked with schools to send an instructor to teach skipping and give out ropes.

"With offers of donations we are planning to continue giving out ropes through the summer, continue making them at the Lions's Den, and start again teaching skipping in skipping in schools in September."

Fitness Facts: What does healthy eating really mean? – GCU Today

By Liz CookRegistered Dietitian, Canyon Health and Wellness Clinic

We hear the word healthy thrown around a lot these days. Healthy food, healthy diet, healthy body, healthy mind, healthy lifestyle the list goes on.

But when it comes to healthy eating, what does healthy really mean? How do you know you are buying good-quality food that is good for your body? How do you see through marketing and misconceptions to know what you really should pick? Lets break it down:

First things first. Buying whole, fresh, unprocessed foods is your best bet. Think fresh fruits and veggies, minimally processed meats, whole grains, nuts, seeds and legumes. If it doesnt need a nutrition label, its probably a good thing to buy!

However, plenty of healthy foods come in packages and will contain a Nutrition Facts label. This label has a ton of information on it and can be a little overwhelming.

Fortunately, the labels are getting a makeover, and you will start to see more and more of the new Nutrition Facts labels in the future. The updates make the labels easier to read and understand. If youre interested in seeing a comparison of the two, click here!

When it comes to deciding what to eat, instead of trying to compare every line on the label, focus on a few important pieces.

Things to maximize:

Things to minimize:

Focusing on the Nutrition Facts panel can give you valuable insight into what you are eating, but make sure to check out the ingredients list as well! When it comes to reading an ingredients list, be sure to consider three important factors.

First, shorter lists are more favorable and are usually found on foods that are closer to their naturally occurring form.

Next, the order of ingredients matters. Ingredients are listed in order from most to least, so if sugar is the first ingredient on the list, youre eating mostly sugar! Look for recognizable, whole foods at the top of the list.

Finally, evaluate the complexity of the ingredients. If the words in the ingredients list look more like the names of chemicals than the names of foods, its likely something to avoid.

Evaluating the back panel gives you tons of information, but dont ignore any claims made on the front of the package. In trying to sell products, food companies use different words and phrases that can be misleading at times.

For example, a food labeled as calorie free can contain up to 5 calories per serving. If the serving size is small, you may use multiple servings without realizing it and end up adding calories you may not even realize were there!

The same goes for fat free and sugar free, which really mean less than a half-gram per serving. Here are a few other front-of-label claims to look out for:

Another question that comes up frequently: Is organic produce better than conventional? The answer depends on a few factors.

First, if you have an unlimited budget to buy all organic, go for it! There arent really any downsides to consuming fewer pesticides.

However, if that is not realistic for you, there is a tool to help make the decision a little easier. The Environmental Working Group comes up with a list of the Dirty Dozen each year. This list contains the produce items that have been found to have the highest amount of pesticide residue on them and should be bought organic when possible.

The group also has a list of the Clean Fifteen, or the foods with the least pesticide residue, that you can feel more comfortable buying conventionally. Its also worth noting that organic foods have roughly the same number of calories, carbs, protein, fat, etc., as their conventional counterparts.

One final thing to discuss is the concept of health halos. This is the notion that a food is healthier because of a claim made on the label, a diet it fits into, or the store it was purchased from.

A few examples of this rationale are that all natural foods are better, vegan foods are healthier or anything from Whole Foods is inherently healthy. These are common traps that are easy to slip into, but with the knowledge you have gained from this article you can be a smarter consumer and really pick the best option!

10 reasons to have a primary care physician – Post Register

It is highly recommended that people have a primary care doctor who knows you and your family well. Here are 10 compelling reasons why its important for you and your family to have a primary care doctor (PCP).

Continuity of Care

When an entire family has an ongoing relationship with a primary care doctor, they get a better quality of care. They get to know you and your family over time, and, ultimately, know what is right and wrong for you because they are familiar with your lifestyle, your health, your family, and your medical history.

Health Education

You and your family will receive special attention from a primary care doctor. They are like medical life coaches and take the time to teach healthy lifestyle choices to help you and your family live the best possible lives.

Higher Level of Comfort

A primary care doctor is someone you can always feel comfortable voicing your concerns to and leave an appointment feeling as though you were really listened to. They will help you to become an informed and active member of your healthcare decision-making process.

Preventative Care

A primary care doctor understands preventative care. Like a dentist, they perform annual checkups to uncover any problems. The earlier health abnormalities are detected, the better chance you have at receiving treatments that could result in more favorable outcomes.

Health Management

They provide thorough health evaluations for the entire family from infants to the elderly. These evaluations include well-child visits for immunizations and sports physicals and wellness exams for men and women. These preventative exams can help detect high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart problems, thyroid issues, diabetes, a variety of cancers, and so much more.

Advocate

A primary care doctor is a reliable and trustworthy resource to help you navigate the complex healthcare system.

Referrals to Other Medical Specialists

An experienced and well-connected primary care doctor will provide qualified assistance in finding the right specialist when required by illness or injury.

Coordination of Care

If a specialist is required, a primary care doctor can coordinate information between other healthcare providers, making sure there is no duplication of testing to help reduce your medical costs.

Better Patient-Doctor Communication

They are your first-line of defense if something is not right. They will take your phone calls and answer any questions you might have about a pressing medical issue. They can assess the urgency of most medical problems and will direct you to the best place for that care.

Longevity

They look at the big picture of you and your familys health. Overall, having a primary care doctor will keep you as healthy as possible as you navigate through the many stages of life. Studies show people who regularly visit a PCP have longer, healthier lives.

In addition to all of those compelling reasons to have a PCP, Binghams PCPs are currently offering Tele-Health visits (online or over the phone) for those individuals that find it difficult to come into the office. In the past three months, weve had over 4,000 Tele-Health visits. And, in case you didnt know, Bingham offers a FREE transportation service that picks up patients from their home, gets them to their appointment, and gets them back home.

Real Men Take Care of Their Wellbeing #ManHoodGame – The Good Men Project

Here are some of the ways you can put your health first and take care of yourself.

July 21, 2020 by Isaiah Ram Leave a Comment

Theres been a certain stigma around the past few generations related to men utilizing resources for their health. Maybe you grew up with a father who thought going to the doctor was not manly. Maybe you have a friend who scoffs at the idea of staying on top of checkups.

Whatever it may be, its important that you set your health as a priority in your life. Here are some of the ways you can put your health first and take care of yourself.

The most important thing you can do today is to focus on living a healthy lifestyle. This means exercising, having a good diet, and taking care of yourself. Everyone knows the saying you are what you eat but few understand the importance a diet can play in your future. Heart disease, muscle atrophy, and even sexual health can be impacted in 20 or 30 years based on the decisions you make today.

So, improve your diet! Its ok to live a little and enjoy pizza for what it is but know that its not sustainable for your health. Vegetables, fruits, and nutrition-dense foods will yield the most return for your body in the long run. There is nothing more manly than a man who takes care of himself by eating clean.

You shouldnt feel shame over your lifestyle, either. Some men face pressure from friends who eat poorly or drink a lot of alcohol to join in on unhealthy behaviors. Sure, drinking a six-pack with the boys every weekend sounds like a great time, but do you realize the impact youre having on your liver? Have you considered how alcohol is impacting your weight? What about developing nerve damage and needing neuropathy treatment? This isnt to scare you or shame you, but real men should be aware of the impact food and alcohol can have on their bodies!

These are important things to consider as you grow into who you are as a man. No one will wish they had drunk more beer or smoked more cigarettes on their death bed at a young age. No one would want to live with neuropathy or heart disease. A day will come when you realize you arent invincible to what you gave yourself to and youll wish you had taken better care of your health.

Many men can recall their fathers never going to the doctor. It couldve been a life-threatening disease, an auto accident injury, or any number of things that could have lifelong effects. As a man, its important that you dont fall victim to this old way of thinking. Its good for you to take care of yourself and see a doctor!

Treating things as soon as possible will negate the long-term effects an incident has on you. Its easy to get into a car accident and think that you dont need to see a car accident chiropractor. Or maybe youve been diagnosed with a condition, and youre not wanting to take time off work so you try and fight through the pain.

This isnt good for you. Your body needs you to mend and take care of it. Dont fret over losing some money or worry about what your friends will think if you visit a doctor after sustaining an injury. Theyll understand when you explain why youre choosing to take care of a problem up front, rather than later. Who knows, it could be too late if choose to wait.

Think youre too young to need a prostate exam or a colonoscopy? Or afraid your friends or wife would judge you for being proactive? The truth is being proactive never hurts anyone. In fact, it could be the thing that saves you from a condition you had no idea about!

Visiting an orthopedic clinic or physician regularly will yield benefits for years to come. Doctors can see and plan for things before they happen. MRIs, CT scans, and other modern technology make it easier to catch things wrong in your body. Why would you not take advantage of this at a young age by continually monitoring your health? For whatever reason, many guys think their health is something they dont need to worry about until theyre older. And thats just not true!

There is no shame in visiting a doctor. Its ok to diet and watch your blood pressure. Youre not strange for considering your health years before most men do. Real men take care of their bodies by dieting, exercising, and being proactive with checkups. Its time that more guys realized what a healthy lifestyle would bring them for years to come.

Easy Ways To Help Improve Your Health – Anti Aging News

This is the season that invites us to eat a little bit lighter and become more active outdoors with its brighter, longer, and warmer days trying their best to invoke sun shiny happiness inspiration in us all.

For those looking to engage in a more healthful lifestyle that is perhaps in a reaction to a few pounds or less desirable habits that have been gained over the past few difficult months, please be kind to yourself. We may have indulged a bit more but this is due to the stresses that are associated with being stuck at home and all of the uncertainty. It is important not to judge yourself or others for the ways chosen to cope during such a trying and uncertain time.

Being kind and compassionate to others and ourselves is important to mental health, and this can also affect our future behaviors. Forget what you did before, consider each day from now on to be a new opportunity to improve your health and wellness by making a few very simple adjustments to your daily routines to support your overall health, longevity, and anti-aging efforts.

Along with the possibility of beautiful weather we also have the opportune time to take advantage of a variety of fresh produce that can be incorporated into healthy meals while we enjoy a variety of outdoor locations that can be utilized for fun fitness activities.

During the hotter weather it is especially important to stay hydrated because we may lose more fluids through sweat, drinking water will help to keep us healthy. The amount of water one needs can vary from person to person, but the Institute of Medicine recommends women should intake 2.7 liter of fluids per day and men should intake about 3.7 liter per day.

Drinking 12 ounces of water with each meal can help you meet your fluid needs, this can also help you to avoid overeating. For those that are not interested in plain water try adding fruit to the water to infuse some flavor or even some mint or rosemary. Seltzer can also be refreshing and more satisfying than plain water on a really hot day. Broth based soup can also help you to meet your fluid needs, as can water rich foods like watermelon, cucumbers, celery, oranges, and grapes among others.

Try to take advantage of the glorious weather and get outside and have some fitness fun. Regular physical activity can help to strengthen your bones and muscles while lowering your risks for disease and helping you to maintain a healthy weight.

Exercise does not have to be boring and tedious, take advantage of these longer days to enjoy activities like treasure hunting, walking, hiking, dancing, jogging, riding a bike, roller skating, swimming, tennis, badminton, outdoor yoga, golf, frisbee, bocce ball, volleyball, snorkeling, horseshoes, baseball, soccer, lawn bowling, golf, paddle boarding, kayaking, flying a kite, and water skiing. This season has numerous ways to have fun which will help to keep you fit and increase your energy expenditure including chores like mowing the lawn, gardening, yard work and washing the car which also get you moving more while accomplishing the necessary chores.

If you consume a lot of carbs you can also consider replacing some of the more starchy ones like white rice and regular pasta with lower carb alternatives as a compromise that can give your meals a nutritional upgrade by boosting the fiber and nutrients while reducing some calories. You can try switching out mashed potatoes for cauliflower sometimes, or substitutes chickpeas and lentil pasta in the place of regular pasta. Chickpea rice makes a nice alternative to white rice as does quinoa, and for another touch of variety spaghetti squash makes a nice change from regular spaghetti noodles.

Adding protein to a meal can help to make us feel fuller for longer, and it also helps us to intake fewer calories than a meal that consists of only fats and carbohydrates. Protein can also help to preserve muscle mass which in turn helps to keep our metabolism running which is important as we lose muscle mass with age. Protein rich food such as shellfish, poultry, beans, lentils, eggs, Greek yogurt, and fish are good choices, but dont forget to add some veggies to that meal to increase satiety to complete that meal.

Sometimes I find it hard to eat protein when it is hot out, during these times I turn to quinoa which can be consumed hot or cold, and it is also a good source of plant based protein for those who wish to avoid animal products. Cooked quinoa consists of 222 calories 71.6% water, 21.3% carbs, 4.4% protein, and 1.92% fat in just one cup. Additionally it is gluten free and higher in nutrients than most grains, while being very flexible in its uses which is why it is my preferred go to for a variety of yummy hot/cold recipes.

For anyone looking for that magic bullet, fiber may be as close as it gets as this undigested plant substance can help you to feel full, lose weight, ease digestion, lower cholesterol levels, and help you to lower the risks of developing heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and colorectal cancer. However, most people (9 out of 10) are not getting enough fiber according to research.

To get more fiber into your diet isnt that hard, barley, oatmeal, beans, nuts, legumes, seeds, fruits and veggies are all great sources. Typically the more whole, natural and unprocessed the food the higher in fiber it will be, but keep in mind that there is no fiber in meat, dairy, or sugar. One of the benefits of eating more fruits and vegetables is boosting your immune system to go along with increasing your fiber intake. It is recommended that at mealtimes you fill half of your plate with fruits and veggies, which come in a range of colors carrying a variety of important vitamins, minerals, and nutrients that can help to prevent disease. Think Eat The Rainbow at meal times.

In addition to keeping an eye on how much you are eating, it may also wise to pick a time that you will stop eating at for the day as well, which should be ideally at least 4 before going to bed to result in at least 12 hours between meals. This habit offers you a way to enjoy some of the benefits of intermittent fasting that works with our natural circadian rhythms. Eating late at night may increase the likelihood of weight gain, while taking in calories during the day has beneficial effects on weight management as well as other health indicators. If you find yourself getting hungry, reach for a glass of water which should help to fill that hole.

You dont have to eliminate all indulgences, just pick one for the day. It can be that glass of wine with dinner, that cup of low fat ice cream, or even a small handful of dark chocolate chips. The point is that in moderation intentional portion controlled indulgences, even on a daily basis, can be part of a healthy plan. It is not realistic to deprive yourself of all of your favorite treats, and it may be setting yourself up to backfire and binge on those forbidden foods when you least expect it which will sabotage all your efforts.

Along the way in your journey you may experience slips and setbacks. Be kind to yourself, no one is perfect. The important part is that you are trying. This is not a failure, it is just a minor speed bump. Take it as an opportunity to learn and grow from. Pick yourself up and start over again. Do not give up, you can do this, and you are well worth it. You deserve the benefits that each day of lifestyle improvement will bring to you.

Easy Ways To Help Improve Your Health - Anti Aging News

G20 countries in Asia Pacific are not prepared for the needs of ageing populations, according to new research from the Economist Intelligence Unit -…

HONG KONG, CHINA - Media OutReach - 22 July 2020 - Morepeople are living into old age than ever before. In 2018 The World HealthOrganization predicted that by 2020 there would be more people aged over 60years than there are children under 5 years. This prediction is on track to becorrect, and numbers in the older cohort continue to rise. This hascreated challenges in providing health and social services for burgeoning olderpopulations and governments across the globe have been slow to react.Priorities are now shifting from solely addressing the health of older people,to how societies can maximise this opportunity and provide effective, inclusiveenvironments in which to age.

This report from The Economist Intelligence Unit describesfindings from the "Scaling Healthy ageing, Inclusiveenvironments and Financial security Today" (SHIFT) Index", a benchmarking analysis around ageingsocieties. The SHIFT Index benchmarksagainst a set of national-level leading practices in creating an enablingenvironment supportive of longevity and healthy ageing for societies in the 19countries comprising the Group of Twenty (G20). The SHIFT Index captures the multifactorial variables that impactageing across three domains: adaptive health and social care systems;accessible economic opportunity; and inclusive social structures andinstitutions.

The research found that no G20 country isfully prepared to support healthy, financially secure, socially-connected olderpeople. The US, Australia, Canada and South Korea ranked highest in our indexwith scores in the 70s out of 100 (see table below). Broadly, those countrieswith a higher proportion of people aged over 50 -- including the three highest ranking countries plus South Korea,Germany, France and Japan -- are implementing moreleading practices to enable inclusive environments. Wealthy countries may findit easier to respond, but wealth is not a prerequisite for providing supportiveenvironments. The best scoring health systems tend to be high-income countries, but upper-middle income Brazil, and lower-middle income Indonesia are alsomaking strides to improve health systems.

As a whole, the G20 countries perform bestin providing adaptive healthcare systems and worst in providing inclusivesocial structures and institutions, indicating that countries still have workto do to shift the focus towards building more welcoming societies for olderadults as they age. Countries also have room to improve in providing moreaccessible economic opportunities to older workers.

Despite clear progress made, governmentshave more work to do to make sure their health systems are adaptive to theneeds of older adults as they age, while also fostering inclusion and ensuringindividual economic security. A keybarrier to addressing this is lack of robust age-disaggregated data collectionby governments in areas such as dedicated health professionals, the extent ofisolation and loneliness as well as mental health.

The SHIFTIndex reveals several priority areas that may form the basis of policyresponses to develop more accessible and inclusive societies for older people:

Jesse Quigley Jones, managing editor at TheEconomist Intelligence Unit and editor of the report, said, "The challengesthat ageing populations present for economies and health systems have long-beenunderstood, yet provision of inclusive, supportive environments for olderpeople has not been a high-profile policy priority. Although wealth has emergedas a theme in the Index as a contributing factor towards healthy ageingindicators, it is not necessarily a prerequisite for providing supportiveenvironments. Lower-income nations can take low-cost measures that improveageing societies, such as enacting inclusive work environment policies andfostering inclusive and enabling social environments.

With older people particularly vulnerableto the health and societal impact of the covid-19 pandemic, it is moreimportant than ever for older people to lead healthy, independent lives for aslong as possible and avoid the need for institutional care. While our data werecollected pre-pandemic, the priorities identified in the report are now throwninto sharper light and may serve as a wakeup call for governments across theglobe for providing adaptable, accessible and inclusive environments in whichpopulations can age."

Research from University of Exter reveals the evolutionary reasons why we have friends – In Your Area

Professor Lauren Brent, an expert in animal behaviour from the University of Exeter has been awarded substantial funding to help uncover the evolutionary origins of friendship and social bonds

The quest to discover why friendship plays such a pivotal role in social and mental well-being has been given a significant boost, it has been announced.

Professor Lauren Brent, an expert in animal behaviour from the University of Exeter has been awarded substantial funding to help uncover the evolutionary origins of friendship and social bonds.

Prof Brent has received a 2 million grant to conduct ground-breaking new research to investigate not only social bonds are so important to the health and longevity of so many species, but also why evolution allows social isolation to persist despite its detrimental impact on individuals.

The multi-million pound funding was awarded by the European Research Council (ERC) under its Consolidator Grants scheme.

Prof Brent, an Associate Professor in Animal Behaviour at the University of Exeter said: Friendship may be one of the most important strategies humans have for surviving in large groups.

We know that friendship is crucial for human health and well-being - for example, people who are socially isolated have a greater risk of heart disease than heavy smokers or drinkers.

But to fully understand why we have such a fundamental need for friends, as well as the consequences of not having those relationships, we need to try and determine the origins of friendship itself. Unravelling friendship from an evolutionary perspective is a crucial step component of understanding what it means to be human.

Prof. Brents project, called FriendOrigins: The Evolutionary Origins of Friendship - A Cross-Species Comparison and Experimental Approach, aims to enhance our understanding of friendship structures by studying multiple species of macaque monkeys.

Prof. Brent added: By uncovering the factors that regulate and drive friendly relationships in other primates, we can potentially reveal the origins of human friendship and gain new appreciation of what we do, or dont, have in common with some of our closest living relatives

Prof. Brents research is one of 318 grants awarded to researchers across Europe totalling 635 million - in the most recent announcement.

The awards are given to outstanding researchers, with between seven and 12 years of experience after completing their PhD, and a scientific track record showing great promise.

This project has received funding from the European Research Council (ERC) under the European Unions Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (grant agreement No 864461)

Douglas County Health Board approves purchase of masks for community, messaging that racism is a public health crisis – Lawrence Journal-World

photo by: Kevin Anderson/Journal-World File Photo

The Lawrence-Douglas County health department's home at the Community Health Facility, 200 Maine St., is pictured in this file photo from July 2010.

The Douglas County Health Board on Monday night approved the purchase of 10,000 masks to be distributed to the community and to issue a statement that racism is a public health crisis.

The masks, which will cost a little under $40,000, will be distributed to those in need and will help support school districts and places with congregate living, such as the Lawrence Community Shelter, Lawrence-Douglas County Public Health Director Dan Partridge said.

Health board Vice Chair Shanda Hurla suggested the health department look into purchasing some kids-sized masks, and health board member Stephen Fawcett suggested the health department consider what kind of messaging it might put on the masks.

The health board also approved a public message declaring racism to be a public health crisis.

The message will not be released to the public until all members of the health board sign it, but the declaration in part states that racism is a harsh reality for many in our community.

In particular, longstanding and systemic maltreatment of Black people within our nation, state and communities have negatively impacted their housing, educational attainment, income, incarceration rates, and health status, the message reads. All are stark reminders that the system was designed to provide advantage to some, while robbing others of fair opportunities based on their identity. We believe that this is inherently wrong.

The message also includes information from the Douglas County Healthy Equity Report about the unequal burden for Black members of the community. The report found that Black children in Douglas County are 4.7 times more likely to live in poverty, and Black county residents are 4.7 times more likely to be incarcerated than white residents.

The message directs Lawrence-Douglas County Public Health to work with the Community Health Plan Steering Committee to include a fifth issue area focused on Health Equity.

Partridge thanked the health board after the motion was approved.

You know I hope that we look back on this day and say this is where we turned the corner. So thank you very much for this motion and passage tonight, he said.

Also on Monday night, the Douglas County Health Board discussed its Douglas County CARES Act proposal. Although the numbers are constantly changing, Partridge said the health department plans to request around or more than $2.1 million. Douglas County will receive nearly $25 million in federal relief funding, the Journal-World has reported. This money will go toward hiring new staff, paying current staff for labor related to COVID-19 duties, infrastructure costs and medical expenses.

New hires for the health department include an epidemiology supervisor, an equity planner, disease investigators and more. The grants would also support compensation for some employees expanded roles as a result of the pandemic such as for health officer Dr. Thomas Marcellino.

Partridge said the health department is already in the process of making new hires despite not yet having submitted their CARES Act funding application, which is due on July 31.

We cant just wait for the money or we will not be timely in our response, Partridge said. Were making these commitments without a safety net because its what we think we need to do for this community.

Partridge mentioned that should the health department not receive the amount of funding they anticipate, he has also discussed using reserve funds to cover these new hires.

Infrastructure expenses would go in part to purchase rapid-testing machines and a mobile health unit, which the health department hopes will be in operation in 2021 or sooner. Rapid-testing equipment purchased for this unit could have the capacity to receive results in 30 minutes, according to Linda Craig, the Lawrence-Douglas County Public Health director of clinic services.

Infrastructure expenses would also support a remodeling of the health departments clinic to replace carpets with more easily cleanable flooring, as well as new countertops that would be easier to clean.

Medical expenses will include money to purchase the masks for community distribution.

21 ways to reduce your Alzheimers risk, backed by research – wreg.com

There are 21 known ways to reduce your risk of developing Alzheimers, and 10 of those are backed by strong scientific evidence, new research has revealed.

The preventative steps with the most impact are mentally stimulating activities, including reading and chess; avoiding stress, depression and head trauma; and avoiding diabetes, high blood pressure and weight gain in midlife and beyond, according to a meta-analysis released Monday.

Regular physical exercise, quality sleep, no smoking, maintaining good heart health in later life and including vitamin C in the diet are among the nine preventative actions with slightly weaker but still supportive evidence.

If risk factors can be modified, the evidence suggests that at least one out of every three cases of Alzheimers may be preventable, said neurologist Dr. Richard Isaacson, director of the Alzheimers Prevention Clinic at Weill Cornell Medicine.

People can take different roads to Alzheimers disease, said Isaacson, who was not involved in the study. This paper helps to provide an evidence-based framework for doctors and patients to consider when managing a persons Alzheimers risk.

The study published in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery & Psychiatry.

Two-thirds of the most promising interventions focused on healthy lifestyle changes and targeting risk factors for cardiovascular disease, such as high blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

The study analyzed 395 observational prospective studies and randomized controlled trials. These efforts, the researchers said, were the most comprehensive and large-scale systematic review and meta-analysis for Alzheimers disease to date.

The top 10 preventative actions backed by science that the study found included:

One of the most important and commonly overlooked modifiable factors is a high level of homocysteine in the blood, Isaacson said. In his New York-based preventative clinic, he said he will often suggest B-complex vitamins to combat elevated homocysteine levels.

However, past research has shown that B-vitamin supplementation works better if these people also have sufficient levels of Omega3s, which are a brain-healthy fat found in fatty fish, for example, Isaacson explained.

So, this is just one of the many examples of the complex web of decision-making that goes into the clinical care of people at risk for the disease.

Nine actions that had weaker, but still positive, impacts on reducing the risk of developing Alzheimers were:

Of the 21 study recommendations, the last two were actions that physicians should avoid when working with patients at risk of Alzheimers disease. Strong evidence was found against giving postmenopausal women estrogen replacement therapy to improve cognition.

I wholly agree with this statement but for women in the peri-menopause and early menopause, hormone replacement therapy may sometimes be considered based on a variety of other factors, Isaacson said.

Finally, weaker evidence indicated that acetylcholinesterase inhibitors drugs like donepezil and galantamine, which are often prescribed to treat memory loss in people with diagnosed Alzheimers disease should not be used as a prevention tactic.

Those are drugs for symptomatic people with mild or worse dementia, Isaacson said. Those drugs work for symptoms but dont slow disease progression.

People who are concerned about their risk of developing Alzheimers should work with a doctor trained in the field to develop an individualized plan to reduce their risk, Isaacson said.

Its also important to note that there is not a single magic pill or action that can prevent Alzheimers, he said.

Risk reduction care is not one size fits all it needs to be comprehensive and individually tailored, ideally under a doctors supervision.

Opinion | Wokeness isnt an attribute that businesses need to bandy about – Livemint

About a year ago, the US-based Business Roundtable redefined the purpose of corporations by emphasizing that shareholder value was not their only, or even primary, concern. Delivering customer value, investing in employees, dealing fairly with suppliers and serving the community were added to the list.

Any corporation that tries to fulfil all the five corporate goals will probably fail, for few have the skills needed to do so many things simultaneously. If we also factor in the additional reality of shortening corporate life cyclesthe average longevity of Fortune 500 companies has fallen from 60 years in the 1950s to 20 nowwe are talking of an impossibility. Expanding a businesss range of objectives will make it more like an NGO, and this kind of role can only be played by super corporations with enormous monopoly profits to bankroll their social objectives.

Many corporations have now begun to pay obeisance to passing social fads or liberal wokeness, swayed by loud demands aired on social media and elsewhere. Advertisers are pulling out of Facebook as they have been told that it provides a platform for divisive forces and hate speech, while neither of these categories has been defined. In India, fairness creams have come under attack for indirectly promoting the idea that fair skin is better than dark. Demands have been made on social media for companies to ban actors and models based on their political predilections.

Very often, frightened companies comply without knowing why they are doing so. What, for example, is divisive? A lack of consensus on social and economic objectives can lead to divisiveness. This led UK voters to leave the EU, for example. Those left behind by globalization and technological progress voted Donald Trump in 2016. So, did the divisiveness relate to Trump the person, or the iniquitous situation left unaddressed by global elites?

Also, what constitutes hate speech? For US campus liberals", a mere invitation to a conservative voice equals backing hate". Statues of Columbus and Cecil Rhodes are being brought down in the current bout of American self-flagellation over racism, to applause by liberals in India, after the death of an African-American at the hands of the Minneapolis police. Yet, it was liberals who were tut-tutting the bringing down of Karl Marxs statues in Tripura, even though Marxist ideas caused more human misery in communist states than any other, barring Nazism. Companies risk getting dragged into such inane political quarrels once they start responding to wokeness.

Today, if one were to quote B.R. Ambedkars tracts on Pakistan or Hinduism without naming the author, most liberals would probably call that hate speech too. What was free speech under colonial rule is often considered blasphemy in democratic" India.

Voices in India are screaming racism" over fairness creams, and corporations are responding by changing product names. But lets dig deeper. If a person thinks that developing lighter skin will help him or her get a job, or a better life partner, is it right to deny them the exercise of such a choice? Dont fair-skinned people seek tans? Dont people with prominent noses opt for plastic surgery? The answer is that social attitudes do not change as fast as the liberal" elite would like, and when companies are asked to comply with woke demands, some of them resort to dog-whistles to satisfy their customer. If Fair & Lovely is not acceptable, it can simply be relabelled Glow & Lovely.

Also, how ethical is it for fair-skinned people to tell darker people that dark is lovely when the latter feel they are at a competitive disadvantage? This is like Indias English-speaking elites wringing their hands in despair over the decline of regional languages even as they themselves abandon their mother tongues.

The problem for corporations is simple: How far do they accommodate wokeness and social fads without damaging their businesses or commitments to broader fairness rules? Also, when an idea obtains high traction on social media, how can they distinguish between passing fads and truly broad changes in social attitudes?

Corporations should focus on broad, sensible policies of non-discrimination on the basis of gender, sexual or political preferences, offer fair wages, curtail excessive pay for senior management, comply with environmental and accounting laws in letter and spirit, and make regular contributions to the community from their profits. If they truly want to do more, they should invest in automation that enhances the skills and productivity of labour, rather than replacing it.

The tradeoff between responsible behaviour and the profit motive should be obvious from this small example. Nike has pulled out ads from Facebook for alleged hate content, but has also warned of job cuts post-covid. How is withdrawing ads over alleged hate speech socially responsible at a time when jobs are being cut? In any society, there is almost nothing more divisive than a scarcity of jobs.

Corporations may come to regret wokeness and the expanding scope of corporate social responsibility. It is unlikely to last another decade.

B2B brand storytelling in the age of COVID-19: Firms lacking ‘human touch’ – Netimperative

The majority of B2B companies have not conducted primary research focused on their customers needs and challenges in the last 12 months, as the sector struggles to humanise their communications in an era of brand storytelling, according to new research.

A new report by global marketing and communications agency, Allison+Partners reveals that whilst B2B marketers wish to evolve their brand strategy in favour of more human connection and conversations to engage with their audiences, they struggle to put this into practice.

As empathy, trust and care become increasingly vital brand currencies, particularly during these uncertain times, more B2B brands will look to follow suit and talk morehuman. Businesses that are able to adapt quickly and execute against timely events are the ones that survive and thrive. The survey, which included input from 400 marketing directors in the UK and Germany, found that:

B2B marketers know the value of humanising their brand but are finding it difficult to put into practice. Almost all (97%) of respondents believe its important to humanise their brand, but only 26% have managed to do so already. Nearly two-thirds (65%) say that they have either struggled to do so or dont know where to start.

Marketers are struggling to understand their audiences in order to truly connect with them. A significant proportion (45%) of B2B marketing decision makers, have not conducted primary research focused on their customers needs and challenges in the last 12 months. Its perhaps no wonder then that 35% say they struggle to understand their customers journey from awareness through to purchase.

Customers are all treated the same, and not as the individuals they are. Only a third (36%) of marketers say its important to tailor communications to specific stakeholders, showing how their products and services might relate to their role. More than half (57%) have not yet created personas or audience segments for targeted campaigns, whether from primary or secondary research.

Commenting on the research findings Jill Coomber, Managing Director of Integrated Marketing, Europe, Allison+Partners said, As an industry, marketers are famously resilient in the face of adversity, and are recognising the need to evolve again in light of the global pandemic. B2B marketers have realise that the notion of people buying from people isnt only a B2C approach and are increasingly putting this at the heart of their own brand messaging. Theres a general consensus that what worked a year ago, wont necessarily worktoday. This report demonstrates how to take those next steps.

Heike Schubert, General Manager, Allison+Partners Germany added, Our research suggests that theres a sizable appetite for B2B brands to revitalise their marketing strategies. Of the marketers surveyed they understand that talking human goes beyond just the latest industry trend; and is in fact crucial for business success and longevity. As a result, we really emphasise the need to invest time and effort in listening to customers and understanding their behaviour as we continue to counsel our clients during this difficult time.

3 More COVID-19 Vaccines Move Toward Final Stage of Testing – Healthline

Three more COVID-19 investigational vaccines have been shown in early clinical trials to be generally safe and to induce an immune response in healthy volunteers.

The results of two of these studies were published online yesterday in The Lancet. One is a phase 1 and 2 trial by researchers at Oxford University with support from AstraZeneca. The other is a phase 2 trial by Chinese researchers supported by CanSino Biologics.

The third is a phase 1 and 2 study by U.S. pharmaceutical company Pfizer and German biotechnology company BioNTech. These results were published yesterday to the online preprint server medRxiv.org and have not yet been published in a peer-reviewed journal.

Deborah Fuller, PhD, a professor of microbiology at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle, who was not involved in these studies, said the results are promising, but more research is needed.

Both groups saw the immune responses that they were hoping to see, she said, and the adverse effects werent severe enough to keep them from moving forward.

What those levels of immune responses mean, in terms of protection from SARS-CoV-2 [the coronavirus that causes COVID-19], were not going to learn until they do the phase 3 trials, she added.

The Oxford candidate vaccine induced an antibody immune response within 28 days after vaccination and a T-cell immune response within 14 days after vaccination.

These were still present 56 days after vaccination. Researchers will continue monitoring participants for at least 1 year to see how long the immune responses last.

Neutralizing antibodies at a level that could potentially neutralize the virus were detected in most people after one dose of the vaccine and in all who had a second booster dose 28 days after the first.

Only 10 people received the second dose.

Although neutralizing antibodies have been found in the plasma of people who have recovered from COVID-19, scientists dont yet know what level of antibodies will protect people against the new coronavirus.

However, Fuller says the induction of both kinds of immune responses specific for the new coronavirus is a good sign.

Theres increasing evidence to suggest that T-cell responses may play an important role in protection from SARS-CoV-2, she said.

Antibodies prime the immune system to target viruses and other invaders in the blood or lymphatic system. T cells are part of the cellular immune response and help the immune system attack infected cells.

T cells are like a backup plan, said Fuller. If you dont have sufficient antibodies to block the infection, T cells would come in and find infected cells, and eliminate them quickly.

The vaccine trial included 1,077 healthy adults aged 18 to 55 years from the United Kingdom. None of them had a history of infection with SARS-CoV-2. About half were female and over 90 percent were white.

Given the limited range of people included in the trial, its not clear how well the vaccine would perform in older adults, people with other health conditions, or ethnically and geographically diverse populations.

Mild or moderate side effects were fairly common among people given the vaccine, with fatigue or headache the most frequent. Other common side effects included pain at the injection site, muscle ache, chills, and high temperature.

Certain side effects were reduced in people who took a pain reliever before and for 24 hours after their vaccination. Side effects were also less common in people after the second dose of the vaccine.

Researchers have already begun phase 3 trials of the candidate vaccine in Brazil, South Africa, and the United Kingdom.

AstraZeneca says it has the capacity to produce 2 billion doses of the vaccine should it prove effective in later clinical trials, reports CNN.

There are 24 COVID-19 candidate vaccines in clinical trials around the world, with another 141 at earlier stages of development, according to the World Health Organization.

The phase 2 trial of the CanSino candidate vaccine showed that it was generally safe and induced an immune response.

The vaccine trial, conducted in Wuhan, China, included 508 healthy adults up to 83 years. People had not previously had COVID-19.

Researchers randomly assigned people to receive either a high or low dose of the candidate vaccine, or an inactive placebo.

Fewer people developed neutralizing antibodies than in the Oxford study 59 percent of the high-dose group and 47 percent of the low-dose group.

However, the candidate vaccine induced a T-cell response in 90 percent of the high-dose group and 88 percent of the low-dose group.

Both types of immune responses were present at 28 days.

This vaccine uses a weakened human common cold virus (adenovirus) to deliver the genetic code for the new coronavirus spike protein to the bodys cells.

The cells then produce the spike protein, which teaches the immune system to recognize that protein and fight the new coronavirus.

Fuller says many people in the world have already been exposed to the common cold virus, so they have some immune protection to it. This could interfere with the immune response generated by a vaccine that uses the adenovirus as a delivery system.

Chinese researchers saw this kind of blunted immune response in people who had pre-existing immunity to the adenovirus.

The Oxford vaccine also uses an adenovirus to deliver the new coronavirus genetic code, but it is a chimp adenovirus, so it should be less of a concern, says Fuller.

We havent been exposed to that adenovirus yet, she said, so it should have the potential to induce full immune responses.

The antibody response with the CanSino candidate vaccine was also lower in people 55 years or older. This is concerning because this age group is at higher risk of a severe form of COVID-19. Age did not affect the T-cell response.

Most adverse reactions for this candidate vaccine were mild or moderate. However, 9 percent of people in the high-dose group had a severe adverse reaction, with fever as the most common.

In an accompanying commentary published in The Lancet, Naor Bar-Zeev, PhD, and Dr. William J. Moss of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health wrote that the trials were broadly similar and promising, and the safety data reassuring.

However, Much remains unknown about these and other COVID-19 vaccines in development, they added, including longevity of response and [immune responses] in older adults or other specific groups, such as those with comorbidities who are often excluded from clinical trials, or ethnic or racial groups more severely affected by COVID-19.

Some of these answers will come from phase 3 clinical trials. In these larger studies, researchers will follow people who are vaccinated to see if they are exposed to the new coronavirus or develop COVID-19.

These studies, though, will need to include a more diverse group of volunteers.

Thats something that needs to be done in the next set of studies, to really look at whether or not youre going to be able to immunize these [other] populations, said Fuller of the Oxford vaccine. Or is this going to be a vaccine thats restricted to the healthy and the young?
