Weve already prepositioned in over 60 regions around the world hundreds of data center, millions and millions of server nodestheyre already there. If you can imagine COVID, if you had to go back and do a procurement exercise and figure out a place to put the equipment, and the supply chains were actually shut down for a while because of COVID. Thats why I say, even three to five years ago we as industries would have been pretty challenged to respond as quickly as we had.

Thats on the more tactical end of the spectrum. On the other end weve also done a lot of things around data sets and advanced data work. How do we find a cure? Weve done things like [protein] folding at home and making sure that those things could be hosted on the cloud. These are thingsthat will be used in the search of a vaccine for the virus. Those are wildly different spectrums from the tactical 'we need to manage and do logistics' to 'we need a search for things that are going to get us all back to basically normal.'

Theres also a whole bunch of stimulus packages and payment systems that are getting created and deployed. Weve had financial services companies that run on top of the cloud. They may have been doing a couple of hundred big transactions a day; weve had them do tens to hundreds of thousands a day when some of this kicked in.

The point is with the cloud I can just go to the cloud, provision it, use it, and eventually when things cool back down, I can just shut it off. I dont have to worry about having bought servers, find a place for them to live, hiring people to take care of them.

There was disruption in supply chain also. Many of us saw this at least in the Statesif you think even the food supply chain, every once in a while, youd see some hiccups. Theres a whole bunch of additional work that weve done around how do we do even better planning around that, making sure we can hit the right levels of scale in the future? God forbid we should have another one of these, but I think we can and should be responsible to make sure that weve got it figured out.

The policy and investment sideit has never been more important for us to collaborate with healthcare, universities, and with others. Weve kicked off a whole bunch of new partnerships and work that will benefit us in the future. This was a good wake up call for all of us in figuring out how to marshal and be able to respond even better in the future.

Weve had a lot of cases where people have been moving out of their own data centers and into ours. Let us basically take care of that part of the system. We can run it cheaply and efficiently. Im seeing a huge amount of data center accelerationfolks that really want to move even faster on getting their workloads removed. Thats true for oil and gas but its also true for the financial sector and retail.

Specifically, for oil and gas, one of the things that were trying to do in particular is bring this kind of cloud efficiency, this kind of AI, and especially help out with places where you are doing exploration. What these have in common is the ability to take software especially from the [independent software vendors] that work in the spacereservoir simulation, explorationand marry that to these cloud resources where I can spin things up and spin things down. I can take advantage of that technology that Ive got, and I am more efficient. I am not spending capex; I can perhaps do even more jobs than I was doing before. That allows me to go do that scale. If youre going to have less resources to do something, you of course want to increase your hit rate; increase your efficiency. Those are some of the core things that were seeing.

A lot of folks, especially in oil and gas, have some of the most sophisticated high-performance computing solutions that are out there today. What we want to be able to do with the cloud is to be able to enable you to do even more of those solutions in a much more efficient way. Weve got cases where people have been able to go from running one reservoir simulation job a day on premises [to] where they can actually go off to the cloud and since we have all of this scale and all of this equipment, you can spin up and do 100 in one day. If that is going to be part of how you drive your efficiency, then being able to subscribe to that and go up and down its helping you do that job much more efficiently than you used to and giving you a lot more flexibility.

Were investing in a $1 billion fund over the next four years for carbon removal technology. We also are announcing a Microsoft sustainability calculator for cloud customers. Basically, you can help get transparency into your Scope 1,2, and 3 carbon emissions to get control. You can think of us as we want to hit this goal, we want to do it ourselves, we want to figure out how we build technology to help us do that and then we want to share that technology with others. And then all along the way we want to partner with energy companies so that we can all be partnering together on this energy transition.

From a corporate perspective weve made pledges around being carbon negative, but then also working with our energy partners. The way that we look at this is youre going to have continued your requirements and improvements in standards of living around the entire planet. One of the core, critical aspects to that is energy. The world needs more energy, not less. There are absolutely the existing systems that we have out there that we need to continue to improve, but they are also a core part of how things operate.

What we want to do is have a very responsible program where were doing things like figuring out how to go carbon negative and figuring out ways that we as a company can go carbon negative. At the same time, taking those same techniques and allowing others to do the same and then partnering with energy companies around energy transformation. We still want the investments in renewables. We want to figure out how to be more efficient at the last mile when we think about the grid. I generally find that when you get that comprehensive answer back to our employees, they understand what we are doing and are generally supportive.

Coming up is a digital feedback loop where you get enough data thats coming through the system that you can actually start to be making smart decisions. Our expectation is well have an entire connected environment. Now we start thinking about smart cities, smart factories, hospitals, campuses, etc. Imagine having all of that level of data thats coming through and the ability to do smart work shedding or shaping of electrical usage, things where I can actually control brownout conditions and other things based on energy usage. Theres also the opportunity to be doing smart sharing of systems where we can do very efficient usage systemsintelligent edge and edge deployments are a core part of that.

How do we keep all the actual equipment that people are using safe? If you think about 5G and additional connectivity, were getting all this cool new technology thats there. You have to figure out a way in which youre leveraging silicon, youre leveraging software and the best in securityand were investing in all three.

The idea of being able to harness particle physics to do computing and be able to figure out things in minutes that would literally take centuries to go pull off otherwise in classical computing is kind of mind-blowing. Were actually working with a lot of the energy companies on figuring out how could quantum inspired algorithms make them more efficient today. As we get to full scale quantum computing then they would run natively in hardware and would be able to do even more amazing things. That one has just the potential to really, really change the world.

The meta point is problems that would take, literally, a thousand years, you might be able to solve in 10 seconds. Weve proven how that kind of technology can work. The quantum-inspired algorithms therefore allow us to take those same kind of techniques, but we can run them on the cloud today using some of the classic cloud computers that are there. Instead of taking 1,000 years, maybe its something that we can get done in 10 days, but in the future 10 seconds.

The US, Australia and Canada lead, but no G20 country is fully prepared for the needs of ageing populations, according to new research from the…

HONG KONG, CHINA - Media OutReach - 22 July 2020 - Morepeople are living into old age than ever before. In 2018 The World HealthOrganization predicted that by 2020 there would be more people aged over 60years than there are children under 5 years. This prediction is on track to becorrect, and numbers in the older cohort continue to rise. This hascreated challenges in providing health and social services for burgeoning olderpopulations and governments across the globe have been slow to react.Priorities are now shifting from solely addressing the health of older people,to how societies can maximise this opportunity and provide effective, inclusiveenvironments in which to age.

This report from The Economist Intelligence Unit describesfindings from the "Scaling Healthy ageing, Inclusiveenvironments and Financial security Today" (SHIFT) Index", a benchmarking analysis around ageingsocieties, supported by Amgen. The SHIFTIndex benchmarks against a set of national-level leading practices increating an enabling environment supportive of longevity and healthy ageing forsocieties in the 19 countries comprising the Group of Twenty (G20). The SHIFT Index captures the multifactorialvariables that impact ageing across three domains: adaptive health and socialcare systems; accessible economic opportunity; and inclusive social structuresand institutions.

The research found that no G20 country isfully prepared to support healthy, financially secure, socially-connected olderpeople. The US, Australia, Canada and South Korea ranked highest in our indexwith scores in the 70s out of 100 (see table below). Broadly, those countrieswith a higher proportion of people aged over 50--including the three highest ranking countries plus South Korea,Germany, France and Japan--are implementing moreleading practices to enable inclusive environments. Wealthy countries may findit easier to respond, but wealth is not a prerequisite for providing supportiveenvironments. The best scoring health systems tend to be high-income countries, but upper-middle income Brazil, and lower-middle income Indonesia are alsomaking strides to improve health systems.

As a whole, the G20 countries perform bestin providing adaptive healthcare systems and worst in providing inclusivesocial structures and institutions, indicating that countries still have workto do to shift the focus towards building more welcoming societies for olderadults as they age. Countries also have room to improve in providing moreaccessible economic opportunities to older workers.

Despite clear progress made, governmentshave more work to do to make sure their health systems are adaptive to theneeds of older adults as they age, while also fostering inclusion and ensuringindividual economic security. A keybarrier to addressing this is lack of robust age-disaggregated data collectionby governments in areas such as dedicated health professionals, the extent ofisolation and loneliness as well as mental health.

The SHIFTIndex reveals several priority areas that may form the basis of policyresponses to develop more accessible and inclusive societies for older people:

Jesse Quigley Jones, managing editor at TheEconomist Intelligence Unit and editor of the report, said, "The challengesthat ageing populations present for economies and health systems have long-beenunderstood, yet provision of inclusive, supportive environments for olderpeople has not been a high-profile policy priority. Although wealth has emergedas a theme in the Index as a contributing factor towards healthy ageingindicators, it is not necessarily a prerequisite for providing supportiveenvironments. Lower-income nations can take low-cost measures that improveageing societies, such as enacting inclusive work environment policies andfostering inclusive and enabling social environments.

With older people particularly vulnerableto the health and societal impact of the covid-19 pandemic, it is moreimportant than ever for older people to lead healthy, independent lives for aslong as possible and avoid the need for institutional care. While our data werecollected pre-pandemic, the priorities identified in the report are now throwninto sharper light and may serve as a wakeup call for governments across theglobe for providing adaptable, accessible and inclusive environments in whichpopulations can age."

The "Scaling Healthy ageing, Inclusiveenvironments and Financial security Today" (SHIFT) Index and the relatedresearch programme whose findings form the basis for this report were informedby extensive research and guided by an international panel of experts fromacross academia, government, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) andinternational financial institutions.

The following 19 countries (comprisingthe G20 and excluding the EU) are included in this analysis: Argentina, Australia,Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico,Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, the UK and the US.These were selected to broadly represent the world: covering roughly 65% of thepopulation and 75% of global GDP.

Is veganism the future of food in a post-Covid-19 era? – Daijiworld.com

New Delhi,Jul 23 (IANS): People worldwide are recognising the devastating toll of the animal agribusiness on the environment, human health, and our collective sense of ethics. Theres still a long way to go, however, the tide is turning. With vegan (non-dairy) variants of almost every food product and ingredient available, people are increasingly turning towards sustainable eating as their food preference.

The notion of living a vegan lifestyle as being an expensive one is nothing but a myth. India is culturally inclined to vegetarianism. Many are turning to vegan by excluding the dairy element in their daily diet. The growing inclination towards conscious eating habits, backed by health benefits is set to drive veganism as a way of life in the days to come, says Chef David Edward Raj.

How does this eating habit help in keeping one's immunity in check?

Plants contain no cholesterol, unlike animals, they provide all that we need in terms of fiber to macro and micronutrients. Studies consistently show that people who eat fruit and vegetables tend to enjoy better health.

Research also suggests that vegans have lower rates of heart disease and diabetes. This reduced risk is partly because vegans are statistically leaner and much less prone to obesity than the general population, Raj, who is the Director - Culinary development and Innovation, Elior India, told IANSlife.

"The vegetables and spices we use in our daily meals are great immunity boosters which help us overcome the Covid-19 threat. It has been medically proven that including ingredients like mushrooms, tomato, bell pepper and green vegetables like broccoli and spinach are also good options to build resilience in the body against infections. A high amount of vitamins and mineral content found in them which helps the body ward off diseases and keeps one healthier."

Food items like ginger, gooseberries (amla) and turmeric are natural immunity supplements. Some of these superfoods are common ingredients in Indian meals and snacks. Several herbs like garlic and basil leaves help in boosting immunity. Seeds and nuts like sunflower seeds, flaxseed, pumpkin seeds and melon seeds are excellent sources of protein and Vitamin E.

Veganism also contributes to nature in terms of reducing emissions into the environment. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, after beef production, cattle milk is responsible for the most emissions (20 percent) on a commodity basis, he points out. "The two major greenhouse gases that are emitting due to animal agriculture are methane and nitrous oxide, because of manure storage and the use of fertilizers, respectively. Hence, veganism as a lifestyle is not just caring about oneself but caring about nature as well."

How is veganism being accepted in the corporate sector?

Raj explains: "With the growing awareness of conscious eating along with the need to maintain a healthy immunity, people are looking for a vegan option in corporate cafeterias. Also, one out of six of Elior's recipes is vegetarian that further turns towards veganism." Elior India caters to Fortune 500 companies across India such as Godrej, Goldman Sachs, Cognizant, Linked In, Ashok Leyland, Visa Master, Daimler, Pfizer, Cisco, MRF, Vellore Institute of Technology, Larsen & Toubro, Panasonic, etc."

Living With Heart Failure: Risk Factors And Warning Signs – NDTV

Heart failure: Lack of energy and feeling of weakness could be warning signs

Heart failure also known as congestive heart failure is a chronic condition which occurs when the heart is unable to pump blood sufficiently to meet the metabolic demands of the tissues in the body. A weakened heart results in inadequate blood supply to the cells leading to fatigue, shortness of breath and other symptoms of heart failure. While heart failure can create challenges in daily routine activities such as walking, climbing stairs or carrying groceries, it can also be fatal in some cases and is a condition that often cannot be reversed. Heart failure develops over time as the heart's pumping action grows weaker the body tries to compensate for this with hormonal and other mechanisms initially and then the compensatory mechanisms fail and the patient decompensates with risk to life .

Heart failure is more common among the elderly though there is an increasing incidence of the condition among young adults as well, due to risk factors such as diabetes and hypertension which are on the rise and from viral infections causing inflammation of the heart muscle. The causes for heart failure include diabetes, valve disease, congenital heart disease, hypertension, heart attack or coronary artery disease, family history of the disease, an enlarged or infected heart. The warning signs comprise:

The American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology (AHA/ACC) suggested a four stage classification for heart failure (Stages A, B, C and D)

Patients in stages A and B do not show any symptoms or signs of heart failure and are not diagnosed as having heart failure. Stage A is in patients who are at "high-risk" of developing heart failure due to presence of risk factors like diabetes or hypertension, without any structural heart disease. Stage B is patients having structural heart disease without any signs and symptoms of heart failure. These asymptomatic patients were included in heart failure to emphasise prevention of heart failure. Stage C would include patients who have symptomatic heart failure and Stage D would be patients who have refractory symptoms requiring advanced heart failure treatment.

Managing patients in Stage A would include lifestyle modifications like cessation of smoking, encouraging physical exercise, managing obesity and control of diabetes, hypertension, lipid abnormalities with long term medications and close follow up. Patients in Stage C will need to be treated by a cardiologist specialising in heart failure treatment and will need specific treatment for heart failure with medications and close monitoring to detect worsening early and to offer advanced heart failure therapy as they get to Stage D.

Also read:Diabetics, Here's How You Can Control Your Heart Disease Risk

Treatment of patients in stage C is a combination of measures undertaken in the previous two stages along with other procedures depending on the condition. These include taking a beta-blocker (medications for reducing blood pressure), other medications that slow the heart rate, restricted sodium and fluid intake, undergo implantable cardiac defibrillator (ICD) therapy or cardiac resynchronization (CRT) therapy

Once the patient gets to stage D, they will require one of the forms of advanced heart failure treatment either heart transplantation of implantation of a left ventricular assist device (LVAD). Heart transplantation is considered the gold standard for treatment of advanced heart failure, due to shortage of donor hearts or sometimes if the patient is not a suitable candidate for a heart transplant due to not fitting into the stringent criteria for heart transplantation, they may be candidates for LVAD therapy as a bridge to transplantation or as destination therapy. Unlike heart transplantation, LVAD therapy can be done without any waiting period and those whose life is at risk while waiting for a heart will benefit immensely with this form of therapy. The survival after implantation of LVAD has steadily improved over the years and in the first two years the survival is quite similar to heart transplantation and as the technology improves further the long term outcomes are also likely to improve. Procedures such as LVADs have gained traction over the last few years due to limitations in undergoing a transplant and have become more technologically advanced and affordable over time and there have been nearly 35-40 LVADs implanted in India over the last two years.

Fossil Fuels And Nuclear Power The World – OpEd – Eurasia Review

Fossil fuels and nuclear energy to electricity power approximately 90% of global energy consumption according to the British Petroleum Statistical Review of World Energy 2020. Energy consumption behemoths China and Japan have left behind heavily subsidized, chaotically intermittent wind turbine and solar panel farms to build hundreds of New-Age Coal-Fired Plants. Coal-fired power plants, which are reliable, energy-dense, abundant, scalable and affordable are being built at such a rapid clip that any global, western environmental gains are being negated over the unreliability of renewables. According to the International Energy Agencys (IEA) World Energy Outlook 2019:

While the importance of transitioning to a carbon-neutral world is recognized, society is still heavily dependent on fossil fuels. Economic growth and a rising global population means that renewable energy sources (primarily the wind and sun) cant keep up with worldwide energy demand.

Reliable energy and electricity are a top national security concern the same way a nuclear arsenal is for first, second, and third world nations. China and Japan are simply keeping up with each other economically, militarily, and diplomatically by building hundreds of coal-fired power plants. Coal delivers continuous electricity 24/7/365 for Asia and the world. Why wouldnt both countries build coal-fired plants, and use them? When global environmentalist, Bjorn Lomberg says: there are Global priorities bigger than climate change. Mr. Lomberg is correct.

Both Asian powerhouses, and the billions without electricity are going to use anything possible (coal, natural gas, oil, petroleum, nuclear, future technologies) to acquire energy and electricity. Does any rational, non-ideological person believe Asia led by China and India are going to de-carbonize by de-industrializing? Fossil fuels will also rule in Africa, which is expected to add more than a half a billion people (to its) urban population by 2040.

In context, China didnt add this many people during its population boom between 1990-2010. Industrial and residential electrification using fossil fuels and nuclear are what billions in Africa and Asia need. For renewables to grow as a major source of energy to electricity:

Remove (taxpayer) subsidies, mandates and other forms of energy favoritism by letting technologies advance or fail in markets based upon their own true merit or lack thereof.

Otherwise, billions will suffer from the get-off-fossil-fuels-and-nuclear movement, and the consequences of various policy regimes denying consumers choices to best satisfy their energy usage requirement. Besides trying to ban fossil fuels and nuclear the De-carbonization movement is killing electrical generation for non-advanced countries, and continents. The costs are over $10 trillion annually.

Advanced countries such as China, India, Japan, and the U.S. use fossil fuels, because over 6,000 everyday products come from the derivatives of petroleum. Fossil fuels are also known energy-dense quantities. Energy density is defined as:

The energy stored per pound (and) is the critical metric for vehicles and, especially, aircraft, cruise ships and merchant ships. The maximum potential energy contained in oil molecules is about 1,500% greater, pound for pound, than the maximum in lithium chemistry. Thats why (all) aircraft, cruise ships and merchant ships, and rockets are powered by hydrocarbons.

Fossil fuels, and nuclear generated electricity are known physical quantities. Their favorable thermodynamic properties are the reasons why growing, and advanced countries will continue choosing oil, petroleum, natural gas, coal, and nuclear. Human wishes and desire-fulfillment economically, and historically began when fossil fuels, and nuclear energy were incorporated into everyday life.

Nuclear energy was after the Second World War; and is the only zero-carbon energy to electrical generation source. Both working together give certainty whereas renewables pose a real threat to conventional sources of electricity.

Since 1990 the global total primary energy supply has mainly been derived from fossil fuels. The approximately 7.7 billion living at this time want and need reliable, consistent sources of energy and electricity that fossil fuels provide even more so than nuclear generated energy to electricity.

If fossil fuels power and electrify the world, then the resurgence since the mid-2000s for American exploration and production (E&P) gains has changed the world in every conceivable way related to energy and electricity. The United States is expected sometime in the near future to become a net exporter of energy. An astonishing development when you consider during the President George W. Bush administration the U.S. imported most of its oil and natural gas for domestic use.

China, India, Africa, most of Central America, the Middle East, and large parts of Central Asia are struggling with little to no electricity. How can any western-led environmentalist or environmental organization believe all the above-mentioned nations, and continents wont follow the U.S. model for fossil fuel use?

Especially China, India, and Africa whose populations are growing the fastest plan for, allow, and legislate their economies, and national security reach new heights by hydraulic fracturing (fracking), or other methods of E&P for fossil fuels? The 2019 United States Energy Information Administrations International Energy Outlook factually reveals China, India, and Africa are using more fossil fuels and nuclear generated electricity to power their energy hungry economies than previously thought possible.

If a country, or continent does not have abundant, reliable, scalable, affordable, and flexible energy and electricity then you do not have an economy, or improved living standards. This is why hydrocarbons and nuclear are the moral answers for human longevity and prosperity decades ahead.

Progress in vaccine trials ‘promising’ – The Star Online

BEIJING: The phase-two clinical trial of the Covid-19 vaccine candidate created by the Academy of Military Medical Sciences and Chinese biotech company CanSino Biologics has found that it is safe and can induce an immune response, according to research published in The Lancet medical journal.

Also on Monday, the journal published the results of phase-one and phase-two clinical trials of a similar adenovirus vectored vaccine developed by scientists at Oxford University and biotech company AstraZeneca. That vaccine also demonstrated success in safety and potency against Covid-19.

Experts have called these results promising. However, pressing questions remain, such as the longevity of its protection, the appropriate dosage to trigger a strong immune response and whether there are host-specific differences such as age, sex or ethnicity.

These questions will be probed in larger scale phase-three trials.

An adenovirus vectored vaccine works by using a weakened common cold virus to introduce genetic material from the novel coronavirus into the human body.

This is to train the body to produce antibodies that recognise the coronavirus spike protein and fight it off.

In the phase-two trial of the Chinese vaccine, 508 people took part 253 of them receiving a high dose of the vaccine, 129 a low dose and 126 a placebo.

Ninety-five per cent of participants in the high-dose group and 91% in the low-dose group had either T-cell or antibody immune responses 28 days after receiving the vaccine.

T-cells can directly target and kill invading pathogens, making them a key part of the human immune response.

The authors emphasised, however, that no participants were exposed to the novel coronavirus after vaccination, so it is still too early to say whether the vaccine candidate can effectively protect against Covid-19 infection.

As for adverse reactions, fever, fatigue and injection-site pain were some of the noted side effects of the Chinese vaccine, though most of these reactions were mild or moderate.CanSino, the developer of the vaccine, is in talks on launching phase-three trials in several foreign countries, Qiu Dongxu, executive director and co-founder of CanSino, said at a conference on Saturday.

An accompanying editorial in The Lancet on the two latest vaccine studies called the results of the trials from China and the United Kingdom broadly similar and promising. China Daily/ANN

Self-help for atrial fibrillation – Harvard Health – Harvard Health

Diet, exercise, and other lifestyle factors are known to affect your risk of heart disease. The major risk factors for heart disease, as well as the condition itself, are all closely linked to the risk of developing atrial fibrillation. Can a heart-healthy lifestyle prevent atrial fibrillation? Can it reduce symptoms?

There's preliminary evidence that managing the risk factors for heart and blood vessel disease may improve the long-term outlook for people with atri-al fibrillation. On a practical level, that could mean fewer episodes of a-fib and improvements in symptomsin short, a better quality of life for you.

The ability of lifestyle change to reduce the burden of atrial fibrillation remains an active area of research. In the meantime, take steps to live a healthy and active lifestyle, in addition to medication and other standard a-fib treatments:

Make sure to also ask your doctor or pharmacist about any new medica-tions, including over-the-counter remedies and herbal supplements. Sometimes these can interact in a harmful way with warfarin, direct oral anticoagulants, or rhythm-controlling drugs.

Although your ability to prevent or treat atrial fibrillation with a healthy lifestyle has limits, most people are able to control bothersome symptoms long-term with medication, procedures, or both. That said, some people run out of safe or effective options, in which case the a-fib will become permanent. But with proper anticoagulation, you can still minimize your risk of stroke, the most dangerous complication of this abnormal heart rhythm.

Rich Collection of Spices Are they Good or Bad for Your Health? – Chiang Rai Times

Have you ever heard your science friend talking about the health benefits of spices? Well, if you have, then you need to know that they are right. Spices have been proven to be a great source of essential nutrients that help our body function properly. With the right amount added to your meals, you can enjoy a ton of health benefits that you didnt believe were possible before.

Most people question whether spices are good or bad for your health. We mean, looking at a powder, what would you expect? But our expectations are wrong because these powdered ingredients do much more than just added flavor to our meals.

Today in this article, we will discuss some of the significant health benefits that spices have to offer to our bodies. These benefits are backed up by research carried out by renowned universities around the globe, so they will, for sure, persuade you to use more spices in your meals.

More than a hundred different spices are used by individuals around the globe to add flavor and texture to their meals. Studies havent been carried out on all of these spices, but it is believed that they all come with several health benefits to offer.

Some commonly used spices have been tested out significantly and prove to be a great source of natural vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Here is how some of them help offer major health benefits.

Cinnamon does much more than add that pleasant musky aroma to your food. Extracted from the cinnamon trees bark, this splendid spice has proven to help with high blood sugar levels. Doctors often recommend individuals suffering from type 2 diabetes to add a pinch of cinnamon to their drinks to benefit from it.

The thing about cinnamon is that it adds a sweet taste to your food items without adding sugar to it, which is hard to process for diabetic individuals. Other than that, it also helps in reducing your cholesterol level, which is also a result of high blood sugar. So adding it to your controlled diet plan can be an addition to a healthy lifestyle.

Turmeric is an Indian spice commonly used in almost all their dishes, which is trending as present as one of the superfoods in the market in terms of the number of health benefits it offers to our bodies. The benefits of turmeric are endless. The major benefit of turmeric is its ability to help fight inflammation, which is the reason for discomfort and major illnesses in most cases.

Curcumin is a compound that is found in turmeric in abundance. Studies carried out by Johns Hopkins suggest that a combination of a chemotherapy drug and curcumin was more effective in shrinking drug-resistant tumors as compared to the usage of chemotherapy alone.

Other studies suggest that curcumin helps fight inflammation in the brain, which is the leading cause of multiple neurological disorders such as Alzheimers and Parkinsons disease. It has also helped individuals fight against mood disorders such as anxiety and depression.

Have you ever heard your grandma tell you to drink ginger tea when feeling nausea? If yes, then you will be surprised to find out that she is right. Ginger is a tropical plant that has been widely used worldwide by our ancestors for centuries to treat stomach upset, diarrhea, and nausea.

Studies suggest that ginger helps calm pregnancy-related nausea, vomiting caused due to chemotherapy, motion sickness, and an upset stomach. The good thing is that ginger products are widely available in all supermarkets. You can get ginger tea, lollipops, candies, or regular dried powder to add to your meals.

Most of you out there are well-aware of the usage of garlic in our everyday mealsa small bulb-shaped spice with a pungent smell that isnt appealing at all. But at the same time, the number of health benefits that little bulb has to offer overrides the smell that one has to bear when adding to your meal.

As we grow older, our arteries tend to get filled up with fatty acids. The overuse of fats in our diets supported by other factors such as smoothing, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure contribute to the deposition of fats in our blood vessels. Over time these deposits create a major blockage in our arteries, which leads to heart diseases.

Studies carried out by health departments at different universities suggest that garlic helps protect you from heart diseases. The compounds found in garlic help add flexibility to your blood vessels to the deposits, move down to the cells instead of staying in place and causing a blockage. You can add it to several savory dishes to increase its intake.

Spices have several surprising health benefits to offer to our bodies. With their rich antioxidant content and other useful compounds, they assist our bodies in carrying out their everyday functions effectively. But the major question is, how should you consume these spices to get the most benefits out of them?

The first thought that comes to mind is by using it to add flavor to our meals. It sounds like a great idea and works in most cases, but the problem is that most of us add spices to our food while cooking. In most cases, the direct heat, such as during grilling or frying, removes or lowers the autoxidizing power and renders them less useful for our bodies. Therefore it is best to practice microwave cooking with spices because it helps enhance the antioxidant levels.

If you are not much of an eater but still wish to add the health benefits offered by spices to your diet, supplements are the way to go. Certain strictly regulated and tested commercial supplements are packed with the same benefits as spices. But we recommend that you always consult your doctor before using any supplements because there is no way of knowing which might be inside the pill.

Spices tend to offer several health benefits to human bodies. But that doesnt mean that you should start consuming them in excess to prevent all the diseases and become healthy. That is not how it works. Excess of everything is bad, so you need to consume them in a controlled manner to benefit the most from it.

New prescription pill that could help you lose weight approved by FDA – The Star Online

Obesity is a condition characterised by excess deposition of fat to the extent that it may have an adverse effect on health.

Not only is obesity an epidemic and a public health problem, but as defined by The Obesity Society, is also a severely debilitating condition in its own right.

It is caused by overeating, lack of physical activity, genetic susceptibility, hormonal imbalance and psychological issues. Obesity is associated with adverse health effects such as diabetes mellitus, high blood pressure, stroke, joint damage and excess cholesterol, which eventually leads to cardiovascular disease (heart attack).

This highlights the importance of knowledge of obesity and recent advances in its management for the general public.

Obesity is measured by body mass index (BMI), which is calculated using the formula: weight in kilogrammes divided by the square of the height in metres (kg/m2).

There are numerous online BMI calculators, which will help to get the BMI value in seconds.

The World Health Organization recommends a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 as normal for the adult population; 25-29.9 as pre-obese; and more than 30 as obese.

For the East Asian population, a lower BMI is recommended to determine obesity because the mean BMI is lesser than in the European population.

So, in addition to BMI, waist circumference (males 94cm and females 80cm) is also used to determine the central obesity in the Asian population.

The management of obesity mainly involves the restriction of calorie intake and enhancing physical activity. This will work for a majority of the pre-obese and obese individuals, who strictly comply with it.

In individuals with specific associated conditions, along with diet and exercise, underlying hormonal and psychological diseases have to be treated to overcome obesity.

Those who do not benefit from diet and exercise are treated with medications which either reduce the calorie intake by suppressing appetite or increasing energy consumption. Some medications prevent the intestinal absorption of nutrients.

If the methods above dont work, there is an option of a gastric balloon or a surgical procedure to limit the volume of the stomach or reduce the length of intestines. However, they are invasive and are associated with complications.

New treatment modality

Recently, the United States Food and Drug Administration approved a non-invasive oral hydrogel-based weight loss pill.

These pills are expected to be available in 2021 in the US, and possibly in other parts of the world.

The prescription pills, intended for individuals with a BMI of 25-40, have to be taken twice daily with water, about 20 minutes before lunch and dinner.

How it works: This oral pill is made up of a super-absorbent hydrogel, which is not absorbed into the blood.

Instead, it is eliminated from the gut, just like food particles.

The pill contains multiple small particles composed of two natural components, cellulose and citric acid, which create a complex structure having the ability to absorb and retain huge amounts of water.

The capsule particles can swell up to 100 times more than its original size when consumed and gain an elasticity similar to ingested food.

Multiple particles from the capsule can fill the stomach, and the individual does not feel hungry, thus leading to smaller food consumption.

This will help to reduce the overall calorie intake by the consumer and consequently, promote weight loss. The hydrated particles undergo degradation in the large intestine with the reabsorption of water and excretion of the degraded particles in the stool.

While the pill is easy to pop into the mouth, it does come with some minor side effects such as abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhoea and flatulence.

It is not advised for pregnant ladies and individuals having an allergy to cellulose or citric acid.

Also, this pill should be used with precaution in individuals with gastrointestinal disorders (GI) such as Crohns disease, diverticula, history of GI surgery, adhesions and GI ulcers.

Considering the ill effects of obesity, one should always practise a healthy lifestyle to prevent the onset. But one should not worry if he is unsuccessful in preventing obesity due to various factors as there are many modalities of management.

Oral hydrogen-based capsules will be an addition to the list of existing treatment modalities with an expectation to treat obesity and prevent obesity-related complications.

Women’s Heart Health, Part 3: Tips for Talking to your Doctor | SBM – Society of Behavioral Medicine

Alyssa Vela, PhD; Assistant Professor of Surgery & Psychiatry, Northwestern MedicineAllison Carroll, PhD; Research Associate, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine

Most women understand that their heart health is important. Yet, unlike for men, womens heart health is talked about far less. As you read in Womens Heart Health Part 1, womens risk for heart disease changes throughout the lifespan, particularly during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause. However, women of any age can benefit from practicing basic health behaviors, such as those outlined in Womens Heart Health Part 2.

One of the biggest challenges women face is how to talk to their doctor about their heart health. This article will outline some of the topics you might bring up to your doctor, as well as specific questions to ask, and provide some general tips.

Your personal characteristics, such as age, race/ethnicity, weight, and family medical history, can all affect your heart health and disease.

Health behaviors, such as smoking, diet, exercise, stress, sleep, and taking your medications, all play a role in your heart health and risk for heart disease.

Your primary doctor often doesnt have the time or expertise to address everything during your appointments. Suggesting or requesting a referral to another provider can help you address your concerns, prevent and manage symptoms, and improve your overall quality of life. You might request a referral for:

Each person is the expert of their own body and experiences you are the only one who has been to every single one of your medical appointments! You can use that expertise to engage in helpful and productive discussions with your doctor and to be your own healthcare advocate.

Women have the power to take prevention into their own hands, whether that means preventing heart disease entirely, or treating problems or complications due to heart disease. Understanding your heart health throughout the lifespan, focusing on good health behaviors such as diet, exercise, stress, and sleep, and engaging in your own care can set you up to meet your goals and have good quality of life.

Dog years – The County

Gail Wieder, Special to The County July 22, 2020

We all would like our dogs or cats to live forever, but we know that is not possible. When we lose our beloved pet, it is truly devastating for the family members.

We all would like our dogs or cats to live forever, but we know that is not possible. When we lose our beloved pet, it is truly devastating for the family members.

I have lost some wonderful dogs over the years; the oldest one was Lucy, a sweet terrier mix that lived to be 19 years old. The youngest was a shepherd mix named Snoopy, and he was 10 years old. They were special pets that certainly captured our hearts.

Have you ever wondered how a dogs age compares with human age? I have always thought that taking the dogs age and multiplying it by seven would give you the age of your dog in human years. I was reading an article the other day on CNN Breaking US & World News that said there is new research published in the Cell Systems journal that debunks that method. And that is because the scientists behind a new study say dogs and humans dont age at the same rate.

Researchers at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine have developed a new formula that takes into account that variance. Tracking molecular changes in the DNA of Labrador retrievers and, in particular, the changing patterns of methyl groups in their genome, according to a press release, the study shows how dogs age at a much faster rate than humans early in their lives, then slow down after reaching maturity.

This makes sense when you think about it. After all, a 9-month-old dog can have puppies, so we already knew that the 1-7 ratios werent an accurate measure of age. Based on the study, a one-year old dog compares to a 30- year old human, and a 4-year-old dog to a 52-year old human. The rate of aging decreases after dogs turn 7.

The new formula is the first that is transferable across species. Scientists plan to test their findings on other dog breeds to study the impact of longevity on their findings.

Although breed, size, life circumstances, and plain old luck all play a role in pet longevity, there is still plenty that a pet owner can do to prolong the life of his or her best pal. Keeping your pet at a healthy weight, exercise, spaying and neutering, regular wellness exams and making sure your pet is up to date on all vaccines are just a few things to keep in mind.

Scientists sequence the genomes of six bat species for clues to their unique features – ZME Science

Myotis myotis(Greater mouse-eared bat), Credit: Olivier Farcy.

Bats are the only flying mammals in the animal kingdom but thats not all theyre known for. Bats have a number of quite extreme adaptations, such as echolocation, highly sensitive sensory perception, significant longevity for their size, resistance to cancer, and exceptional immunity to viral infections. In fact, the coronavirus that has caused the world to grind to a halt is believed to have evolved inside bats, before jumping into humans.

No doubt, bats are amazing creatures. Now, for the first time, researchers have sequenced the raw genetic material that contains the instructions for bats unique, superpower-like adaptations.

Given these exquisite bat genomes, we can now better understand how bats tolerate viruses, slow down aging, and have evolved flight and echolocation. These genomes are the tools needed to identify the genetic solutions evolved in bats that ultimately could be harnessed to alleviate human aging and disease, Emma Teeling, senior author of the new study and a researcher at the University College Dublin, said in a statement.

Teeling and colleagues affiliated with Bat1k, a global consortium of researchers on a mission to sequence the genomes of every one of the 14,210 living bat species, published a study today in which they describe the genomes of six bat species.

The genomes were highly accurately analyzed with state-of-the-art sequencing technology and are about 10 times more complete than any other bat genome published in the past.

Using the latest DNA sequencing technologies and new computing methods for such data, we have 96-99% of each bat genome in chromosome level reconstructions an unprecedented quality akin to for example the current human genome reference which is the result of over a decade of intensive finishing efforts. As such, these bat genomes provide a superb foundation for experimentation and evolutionary studies of bats fascinating abilities and physiological properties Eugene Myers, senior author of the study and Director of Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics, and the Center for Systems Biology, said in a statement.

The first six bat genomes that were sequenced part of the Bat1K global genome consortium belonged to the greater horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus ferrumequinum), the Egyptian fruit bat (Rousettus aegyptiacus), the pale spear-nosed bat (Phyllostomus discolor), the greater mouse-eared bat (Myotis myotis), the Kuhls pipistrelle (Pipistrellus kuhlii) and the velvety free-tailed bat (Molossus molossus).

Their genetic blueprints were compared to 42 other mammals, which enabled the researchers to pinpoint the position of bats on the mammalian tree of life.

Due to their many unique quirks, the question of where bats fit in on the tree of life has always been unresolved. But using novel phylogenetic methods and molecular datasets, the evidence suggests that bats are most closely related to Ferreuungulata a group of mammals that includes carnivores like dogs, cats, and seals, as well as pangolins, whales, and hoofed mammals. Not a very narrow definition seeing how bats and cows are on the same roster, but as more bat genomes are sequenced their taxonomy can be refined further.

The side-to-side comparison of different mammalian genomes also helped tease apart adaptations that are unique to bats through the loss and gain of certain genes.

For instance, the genes that enable bats famous echolocation were selected for in the ancestral branch of bats, suggesting this is an ancient trait in this group of mammals.

There was also evidence of gene loss and gain involved in immunity, particularly the expression of antiviral APOBEC3 genes. This may explain why bats have exceptional immunity that makes them extremely tolerant to viral infections.

In this day and age, understanding the molecular mechanisms that allow bats to withstand coronaviruses may lead to new approaches, therapies, and vaccines meant to increase human survivability in the face of COVID-19.

Having such complete genomes allowed us to identify regulatory regions that control gene expression that are unique to bats. Importantly we were able to validate unique bat microRNAs in the lab to show their consequences for gene regulation. In the future we can use these genomes to understand how regulatory regions and epigenomics contributed to the extraordinary adaptations we see in bats. Sonja Vernes, Co-Founding Director Bat 1K, Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics, Nijmegen, Senior Author

Although the researchers sequenced the genomes of only six bats, theyve already learned quite a lot. However, this is merely the beginning there are still more than 1,400 known bat species to go.

The findings appeared in the journal Nature.

Sparrow Ionia Hospital, Ionia County Health Department to hold COVID-19 testing in Lake Odessa – WSYM-TV

BELDING, Mich. Sparrow Ionia Hospital and the Ionia County Health Department are combining to offer COVID-19 nasal swab testing at a special one-day event in Lake Odessa on Wednesday, July 29.

The testing will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at St. Edwards Catholic Church Family Center, 741 Washington Blvd., Lake Odessa. Attendees are asked to use the north parking lot off of Washington Boulevard.

A nasal swab (or PCR) test determines whether or not you have an active COVID-19 infection at the time the sample is collected. Its a molecular test that is reviewed at Sparrow Laboratories. Nearly 100 people were swabbed at a similar event held recently in Belding.

Residents can attend without having a doctors order in advance. No money will be collected onsite and Sparrow will bill those with medical insurance.

Sparrow Ionia Hospital has been working collaboratively with the Ionia County Health Department to ensure the health and safety of our community, said Sparrow Ionia President Linda Reetz.

Again, the goal is to protect the community we serve as our county and state begin to reintroduce people back into the workforce.

Those seeking more information can contact the ICHD at 616.527.5341.

One of the most effective ways to contain any epidemic is widespread testing, said Ionia County Health Officer Ken Bowen.

We encourage anyone who has symptoms, who may have been exposed, or who will be returning to work to get tested.

Women’s Heart Health Part 2: Keys to Preventing Heart Disease and Managing Heart Health for Women | SBM – Society of Behavioral Medicine

Michelle Pebole, MA; Doctoral Student, Department of Kinesiology and Community Health, University of Illinois at Urbana ChampaignJoni Williams, MD, MPH; Assistant Professor of Medicine, Medical College of WisconsinRose E. Constantino, PhD, JD, RN, FACFE, FAAN; Associate Professor of Health and Community Systems, University of Pittsburg School of NursingAlyssa Vela, PhD; Assistant Professor Surgery and Psychiatry, Northwestern Medicine

Heart disease is the number one killer of women. Because of the gender-specific risks and symptoms, attention to preventing heart disease and managing womens heart hearth across the lifespan is important. Symptoms of heart disease or a heart attack may be more subtle for women than for men. For example, many women experience chest pain at the onset of a heart attack, but other typical heart attack symptoms are far less common among women. Instead, women commonly experience fatigue, difficulty sleeping, shortness of breath, lightheadedness or dizziness, nausea or vomiting, weakness, or a cold sweat. Understanding these gender differences in heart disease symptoms can help increase recognition, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment in women. To learn more about heart health throughout the womans lifespan, read Womens Heart Health: Part 1.

Women also have an incredible amount of power over their own health and can prevent heart disease and manage heart health by practicing healthy behaviors. We have put together recommendations and tips for preventing heart disease in women:

1. Diet: Following a healthy diet is one of the best ways to prevent heart disease. While nutrition guidelines often vary, some foods are well understood to help you to live a healthy life and prevent chronic diseases. Here are five key recommendations for a heart-healthy diet:

2. Exercise: Being physically active is important for maintaining good heart health and treating heart disease. Exercise can strengthen heart muscles, help maintain a healthy weight, prevent other health conditions that strain your heart (i.e. high blood pressure). Here are five effective methods to help you become more active:

3. Sleep: Good quality sleep plays a vital role in how the body functions. Sleep is important for fighting off illness, improving your mood, helping you think, and keeping you active. Nearly 30% of adults get less than the recommended 7 hours of nightly sleep. Here are a few key steps to improve and maintain good sleep:

4. Stress Management: Balancing competing obligations in life can be difficult and the associated stress can negatively impact your health. For many people, stress may result in poor health behaviors, such as over-eating or smoking cigarettes, which further increases risk for heart disease. Additionally, for many people, making time for stress management can create more stress.Choose something that feels right for you and doesnt add to an already busy or stressful schedule. This might mean changing your mindset about an activity. Consider the following options to manage stress and improve your overall health:/p>

By focusing on factors within their control, women can be empowered to manage their health and live their best lives. Setting small, realistic goals and taking active steps can help to support the healthy behaviors that are key for heart health and overall well-being.

Many women have difficulty managing some or all of the key factors on their own. If this is the case for you, consider talking to a professional. Different specialists are available to help with diet, exercise, and sleep. A psychologist or counselor can help you overcome barriers to making healthy changes or learn strategies to better manage stress.
