"We know that there are many factors that affect our mental acuity, people under stress, even giving speeches will increase mental slips of people who are distracted."

As the race to the November presidential election goes on, incidences of word slips or fatigue are likely to continue, Small added.

"You're constantly on the road, it's hard to get enough sleep. We know lack of sleep will affect your mental acuity. We know that stress will affect mental acuity. It's difficult to maintain a healthy lifestyle, to exercise regularly," Small said. "There's a lot of adversity on the campaign trail, and that tests a person's emotional stability."

The Pandemic Is Stressing Many of Our HeartsHeres What a Cardiologist Wants You To Know – Well+Good

Without question, virtually everyone has felt more stressed out since the start of COVID-19. First, there are the large, looming stressors like protecting yourself and loved ones from the virus, or finding the money to pay your bills after a layoff. Then, there are the minor ones like figuring out how to work Zoom or remember middle school math now that youre expected to homeschooland those minor stressors just keep piling on top of each other.

While you may be conscious of the fact that youre feeling more stressed than usual, for a growing number of people, its actually become a potentially life-threatening, physical problem. A new study published in the journal Cardiology found that the pandemic is literally putting stress on our hearts. More specifically, the study looked at nearly 2,000 patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS), which is an umbrella term for several conditions that happen when there is sudden reduced blood flow to the heart, says cardiologist Suzanne Steinbaum, MD.

For some patients, an acute coronary syndrome can present as a heart attack with blockage of blood flow of the artery, causing damage to the heart muscle, says Dr. Steinbaum. However, after comparing the symptoms and diagnoses of the ACS patients between those that occurred during COVID-19 and several other time periods, the study authors found there was a significant increase in one specific type of ACS called stress cardiomyopathy, aka broken heart syndrome.

Why? Well, people are feeling more stressed than everand stress isnt good for your heart. Dr. Steinbaum says lower-income folks are at most risk for ACS such as stress cardiomyopathy during this time because, to be frank, they experience the most stress. Socioeconomic status may also increase stress, especially if someone has been furloughed or lost their job because of the pandemic, she says. Socioeconomic status can also affect access to basic living necessities, medication, doctors and the ability to adopt healthy lifestyle changes, she sayswhich further affects a persons heart health.

How a person copes with stress can also impact their heart health; people might turn to increased alcohol consumption or up their processed snack intake as coping mechanisms. But those might backfire if gone unchecked, Dr. Steinbaum says. Under these stressful situations, unhealthy behaviors may lead to an increase in risk factors, such as an increase in weight, elevated blood pressures, and an increase in sugars. These are all potent risks for acute coronary syndromes.

According to Nieca Goldberg, MD, the medical director of New York Universitys Womens Heart Program, there are a few other reasons why the pandemic has led to an uptick in this type of heart condition. People are delaying care because they are too scared to go to the hospital, she says. Also, some people have not taken their medications for high blood pressure or cholesterol. Dr. Goldberg also adds that the pandemic may be making it harder for people to exercise or follow a healthy diet, lifestyle habits that are critical for heart health.

Of course there are very real reasons to feel stress right now, many of which arent controllable. But both experts say that you can control your lifestyle habits to an extent, and that will help decrease the risk for this type of heart condition. Beans, legumes, fruit, canned vegetables, and canned tuna are all foods linked to benefitting heart health that arent expensive. Exercise is important, too. Even if you cant get to the gym right now, going for walks with your mask on when possible and safe are beneficial.

While managing stress often feels easier said than done, its an important part of heart health. During times of heightened stress, its important to take moments in your day to practice mindfulness, physical activity, eating right, and getting enough sleep, Dr. Steinbaum says. Even though many of us are separate from our friends and family, make time to reach out and connect every day. We might feel isolated, but we need to remind ourselves that we are not alone. Find time every day to do something that helps with dealing with your stress.

Dr. Steinbaum also urges people to not avoid medical care out of fears of the coronavirus. You can still talk to your doctor online, by phone, e-mail, or use telemedicine if available, she says. In-person visits for exams and procedures are still happening toojust make sure you wear a mask when you go.

Healthy routines have certainly been thrown for a loop this year, but this new report is a reminder that its more important than ever to find ways to minimize stress in your life. Its advice worth taking, well, to heart.

Is red wine good for your heart? Yes, but only in moderation here’s how much you should drink – Insider – INSIDER

Research has found that drinking red wine in moderation can be good for your heart. However, consuming too much red wine, or any alcohol, is particularly bad for your heart, and can increase your risk for heart disease.

Here's what you should know about the heart benefits of red wine and how much of it is considered healthy.

The link between red wine and a healthy heart may be due to the high level of micronutrients, called polyphenols, found in the skin and seeds of grapes.

During the production process, red wine is fermented with the grape skins and seeds for a longer period of time than white wine, which means the polyphenols are much more concentrated. For example, a glass of red wine contains around 10 times more polyphenols than a glass of white wine.

These polyphenols especially a polyphenol called resveratrol have been shown to protect and support heart health.

The polyphenols in red wine have antioxidant properties. This means they prevent or reduce the oxidation of low-density lipoproteins (LDLs), the "bad" type of cholesterol molecules we carry in our bloodstream.

When LDLs are oxidized, they build up in the walls of our arteries and narrow them, so that less blood and oxygen can reach the heart. This can cause coronary heart disease, the most common type of heart disease, and the leading cause of death in the US.

Moderate consumption of red wine can also increase the level of high-density lipoprotein (HDL), or the "good cholesterol" in our blood, which is associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease. HDL cholesterol is good because it helps remove excess LDL cholesterol from the blood vessels.

For example, a small controlled study published in the journal Atherosclerosis in 2006 found that after drinking 400 ml (about two to three glasses) of red wine every day for six weeks, LDL cholesterol decreased by 8% in postmenopausal women who had high LDL levels, while HDL cholesterol increased by 17%.

Another study published in 2005 in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that four weeks of moderate red wine consumption daily 300 ml for males and 200 ml for females increased levels of HDL cholesterol by a greater amount than drinking the non-alcoholic, wine-equivalent dose of red grape extract tablets with water.

Some research has found that drinking red wine may decrease platelet aggregation, which can also help reduce your risk for cardiovascular disease.

Platelets are tiny cells in our blood that bind together around damaged blood vessels when we become injured. This clotting is what stops us from bleeding and helps us heal when we get a minor cut.

However, when platelets aggregate too much, they can form blood clots. Blood clots are serious because they can block the flow of blood and oxygen to vital organs, increasing your risk of having a heart attack or stroke.

By reducing the stickiness of the platelets in your blood, red wine can help prevent blood clots and reduce your risk for health complications. For example, a 2002 study published in the International Journal of Molecular Medicine measured platelet aggregation levels in male volunteers after moderate wine consumption and found they were significantly inhibited.

In order to receive the heart health benefits of red wine, the American Heart Association (AHA) recommends no more than one drink a day for women and two a day for men. For reference, one drink is equal to five ounces, or 140ml of wine.

Drinking too much wine, or any type of alcohol in excess, is very bad for your heart, says Robert A. Kloner MD, PhD, Chief Science Officer of Huntington Medical Research Institutes in Pasadena, California and Professor of Medicine at the University of Southern California.

That's because too much alcohol can cause high blood pressure and raise levels of triglycerides, which will increase your risk of heart disease, heart attack, or stroke.

Excessive drinking can also lead to heart failure a disease which makes it harder for your heart to pump blood around your body and atrial fibrillation, which is a type of arrhythmia where the heart beats quickly and irregularly.

Drinking several glasses of red wine throughout the week can be part of a heart healthy lifestyle. But in general, you shouldn't drink more than one or two glasses each night.

In addition, it's important to note that there are many other foods that contain the polyphenols found in red wine which may have the same heart health benefits. For instance, you can find resveratrol in grape juice, peanuts, cocoa, blueberries, and cranberries.

You don't need to drink red wine to have a healthy heart. But, if you like drinking red wine, the good news is that it may have some heart benefits just make sure you drink in moderation.

Is having a new puppy like having a newborn in the house? More than I ever appreciated. – Toronto Star

My youngest son, Alister, and I stood by the crate, talking in hushed voices.

Our new puppy, home with us for the first time that afternoon, had gone into the crate an hour ahead of the schedule wed been provided by the breeder.

Is she down for the night, you think? I asked my 13-year-old, like he would somehow know.

I dont know. Maybe?

It was 10 in the evening. The breeder had said she could last from 11 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. in the crate. If she went down now, would she be up at 4:30 a.m.? I wondered aloud with all the uncertainty of a first-time mom to a human baby.

Well, if she is down for the night, well have to close the crate door then, I said, edging toward a decision.

Shell wake up if we close the door, said Alister.

But we cant not close the door ...

In the end we stealthily closed the door and backed out of the room, tiptoeing our way around the creakier parts of the hardwood floor, up the stairs and out of earshot where we could further speculate on Poppys sleep schedule.

It was the start of what has been close to four weeks now of canine caregiving lessons that have opened my two teen boys eyes to some of the responsibilities of parenting better than any episode of Degrassi or a Tamagotchi toy could have done.

With interest in pet ownership skyrocketing during the pandemic while many families have more time at home to bond with and train their new animal and little else to lift their spirits households across the country are in the throes of puppy parenting.

The Toronto Humane Society had a 100 per cent adoption rate of all the animals in its shelter during April and May, compared to 93.5 per cent the same time last year. Reputable dog breeders have wait lists that stretch well into 2021 and beyond.

Everyone tells prospective puppy parents that itll be just like having a newborn in the household again. Subtracting the breastfeeding, colic and diaper changes, theyre more right than I fully appreciated.

The vigilance required for house training and keeping puppies away from choking hazards and other things that shouldnt go in their mouths is a little like being on alert with a newly mobile crawling baby or toddler. The zombie-like fatigue from night waking is definitely reminiscent of early parenting, as is the way our new responsibilities shape dialogue in our home these days.

Now were reporting to each other when our dog last had a pee or poo, how long she napped and when she last ate.

While I work, my boys negotiate off-duty time with each other to do other things, like take a shower or play a little Mario Cart.

We talk about the witching hour when Poppy gets a little hyper and hard to handle in the evening, like a cranky period with a baby. We arrange her daily play dates with the little kids next door and chart her progress on things like responding to the sit command.

And just like isolated new parents stuck at home more than ever, we notice that life is a little easier to handle when were showing off our cute new addition to people we meet on the sidewalk or friends who come by for a socially distanced backyard visit.

Although it happens that welcoming a dog to our home was in the works before COVID-19 hit, the pandemic can present an opportune time to adopt a pet, said Hannah Sotropa, public relations specialist for the Toronto Humane Society.

We really advocate that when youre looking at an adoption, you need to look at especially during this time the longevity of that decision, said Sotropa. COVID-19 will come to an end and when that time does come, looking at whether an animal still suits your lifestyle will be great in setting you, but also the animal, up for success.

Making it work with a COVID-19 puppy comes down to being proactive as opposed to reactive, she said. That means beginning to prepare your puppy now for life in the after times and whatever sort of return to a previous routine it will bring.

If normally youre out of the house for an eight-hour shift, that means slowly working your pet up to that level of independence.

Using a crate or sanctuary room, possibly gating off an area, get your pet adjusted to being on their own in that space while the family is in other parts of the home, said Sotropa. Work your way up to departures slowly and incrementally.

The other important thing is to spread the responsibilities for your new pet among the members of your household.

Animals often get hyper attached to one person who does most of the walking, the feeding, the loving, said Sotropa.

This person we want to make less significant so that if they do have to go back to work, the animal knows, well, the other members in the house are going to provide me with what I need.

Deena Cooper, who trains and boards dogs through her business DeenaSpeaksDog.com, is already getting calls from people who are in over their heads with the responsibilities of a new puppy. Most of these pets came home during the social distancing period when puppy training classes were mostly suspended or few and far between.

Im getting lots of people wanting me to board and train their dogs; their dogs could be as young as eight weeks old, said Cooper. In some cases these new owners have fond memories of growing up with a dog but are now struggling with a puppy waking them up at night and demanding a lot of attention during the day while theyre also trying to care for their human children.

In other cases the puppies are a bit older and theyve established a lot of crazy behaviours like jumping up, nipping and barking that havent been properly addressed early.

Sotropa asks that anyone still contemplating a pandemic pet adoption think the decision through carefully.

Make no mistake that having an animal is the most rewarding, the most incredible experience; its a bond like youll have with no other, she said. However, they are a commitment and they are a commitment through thick and thin. We dont want to see animals end up back in the shelter.

Something about having instilled this from infancy seems magical to me. And to be able to give that to him"She added:"Whatever he decides to do in his life... the best that I can do is shed light on the things that I think matter and speak the truth and watch him sort of run with it.

Elysabeth: So how did you become vegan?

Daniella: Well, first I became a vegetarian at about five years old. Yeah, I was pretty young. I was also very inquisitive.

Elysabeth: Did you choose it or did your parents?

Daniella: I chose it. But I kinda I hate to say this but it really did choose me.I was in the right place at the right time. I went toa family dude ranch with my family and it was beautiful and everything, but there was one day where they did a rodeo on the property and the guys lassoed the cow's feet and legs together, flipped them on their backs and literally, it just sounds like the most dramatic fall ever. And then they score them with these horrendous torches to brand them and shortly after that, I think we were eating dinner at the dining hall, and they were serving these steaks and talking about their meats and how they raised them, and so on and so forth. I asked a lot of questions and I got really lucky because I remember my dad being really honest with me, and just saying this is what it is and that was it for me. I did not ever want to eat an animal after that, and I think as I got a little bit older, I learned more about veganism organically. My uncle was dying of cancer and I actually grew up near Follow Your Heart [the veganmayo and cheese company]. So, I was really fortunate.

Elysabeth: Oh yes, the company Follow Your Heart!

Daniella: But theres also a restaurant which is amazing. Its like a tiny little [lunch spot] and its been there forever since I was a baby. And so that was really the only experience I had with vegetarian and vegan food and my aunt when my uncle was struggling with cancer, decided to have a chef come over and I think they were related to Follow Your Heart because they were teaching us recipes that he could be eating while he was at home. So, she was like come on over, youre vegetarian, you might like this and I learned about veganism in that moment.

"I realized if youre struggling with cancer you need to get your health in check. Its important to take away the animal products and so that triggered it. And in middle school, in about 6th grade, so[when I was] about eleven or twelve years old, I read a book that was called Skinny Bitch, which is so weird that its called that, but its such an amazing, informative book about animal activism and about what really happens in the food industry. Its so old now but I would imagine its pretty relevant to even today because it talked about (it)- like that was the first time I ever heard about factory farming and what happens in factory farming, and that was it. I just knewI had already been vegetarian, mostly veganand when I was about eleven-years-old, I went completely vegan.

Elysabeth: How was the transition for you?Thats almost twenty years ago now so not many people were doing it, and then your folks were maybe on board or maybe they werent, or your friends at school, what did they think?

Daniella: Yeah I think Ive always just kind of been different. Like people would always say, Are you going to be okay? Are you going to be able to eat something? Or you know I made you this like people want to help you for sure. My family was pretty supportive Id say.

My grandma, I remember her trying to sneak meat into the tomato sauce because she was just worried, naive, and worried that I wasnt getting the right nutrients. But everyone at this point, like my parents both had cancer, at one point, and they both went vegan while they went through treatment. So, they actually came to me and that was a cool moment for sure.

Elysabeth: When you're busy, whats the go-to meal you can make every time? Its always good. Its super fast. Whats your go-to meal?

Daniella: Okay, well, if its not a salad, which I know sounds so boring, but I eat a salad like every day. No question. I just crave it. I usually make a stir fry.I always have San Marzano organic cento tomatoes, always. So Ill always have the tomatoes and Ill throw in any produce that I have, whether it be onions and garlic to start with, olive oil, kale, and then a bean of some sort like a white bean or cannellini or garbanzo, whatever I have. And then, gosh you could go anywhere from there like you could put roasted potatoes and make it more hearty. I mean thats my go-to.

Elysabeth: Rice and beans is itfor me. I mean, how easy can you get.

Daniella: And its a complete protein.

Elysabeth: Complete protein! Yeah, really wonderful.

Elysabeth: Do you have a favorite phrase that you live by? Ill give you a little example while youre thinking about that. I love to say, Nose to the grindstone, eyes to the sky.

Daniella: I got a tattoo about five years ago. It was my first tattoo and I thought about it long and hard and its going to sound really young initially, but it really means something to me. It says, You only live once and at the time everyone was saying YOLO, YOLO whatever. So, I just think to me if you really think about it broader, like your real true body, form, whatever you want to think after us, great. But as this person right now, like Im living once and Im going to take advantage of that. So, take adventures, like take risks, you know, especially when youre younger, you know. Set yourself up for the future so that you can really enjoy.

Elysabeth: Theres this expression I love: Todays the day. Your life is today, you just dont know about the rest of it, so todays the day. Todays the day to go get it, go after it.

Daniella: I love that.

Elysabeth: Yeah super helpful. Okay, so youve talked a lot about purpose...What would you like to be known for?

Daniella: I want to be known for being someone whos just a good person and a good role model. A role model for me has always been important, and I think being on Nickelodeon for twelve years, I grew up in a lot of families homes and I was babysitting then, as well. Like I still am very involved with a lot of kids in my family. Im the oldest of my cousins. I just want people to look up to me and think like, She may not be perfect, but shes doing the best she can and I just hope that people would call me a role model, you know?

Elysabeth: Thats wonderful and I think many do actually.

Daniella: I hope so. I have a lot to learn but Im willing to share along the way, you know? Im willing to figure it out at least.

Daniella, with 4 million followers, is so popular because she makes us all want to make positive changes and lives, and live our best liveswhile we "figure it out."

New Osteoporosis Recommendations From AACE Help Therapy Selection – Medscape

Recommendations on use of the new dual-action anabolic agent romosozumab (Evenity, Amgen)and how to safely transition between osteoporosis agents are two of the issues addressed in the latest clinical practice guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis from the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) and American College of Endocrinology (ACE).

"This guideline is a practical tool for endocrinologists, physicians in general, regulatory bodies, health-related organizations, and interested laypersons regarding the diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis," the authors say.

The guidelines focus on 12 key clinical questions related to postmenopausal osteoporosis, with 52 specific recommendations, each graded according to the level of evidence.

They also include a treatment algorithm to help guide choice of therapy.

Among key updates is an emphasis on the role of the Fracture Risk Assessment Tool (FRAX) in the diagnosis of osteoporosis in patients with osteopenia.

While patients have traditionally been diagnosed with osteoporosis based on the presence of low bone mineral density (BMD) in the absence of fracture, the updated guidelines indicate that osteoporosis may be diagnosed in patients with osteopenia and an increased fracture risk using FRAX.

"The use of FRAX and osteopenia to diagnosis osteoporosis was first proposed by the National Bone Health Alliance years ago, and in the 2016 guideline, we agreed with it," Pauline M. Camacho, MD, co-chair of the guidelines task force, told Medscape Medical News.

"We reiterate in the 2020 guideline that we feel this is a valid diagnostic criteria," said Camacho, professor of medicine and director of the Osteoporosis and Metabolic Bone Disease Center, Loyola University, in Maywood, Illinois.

"It makes sense because when the thresholds are met by FRAX in patients with osteopenia, treatment is recommended. Therefore, why would they not fulfill treatment criteria for diagnosing osteoporosis?"

An increased risk of fracture based on a FRAX score may also be used to determine pharmacologic therapy, as can other traditional factors such as a low T-score or a fragility fracture, the guidelines state.

Another key update is the clarification of the risk stratification of patients who are high risk versus very high risk, which is key in determining the initial choice of agents and duration of therapy.

Specifically, patients should be consideredat a very high fracture risk if they have the following criteria: a recent fracture (eg, within the past 12 months), fractures while on approved osteoporosis therapy, multiple fractures, fractures while on drugs causing skeletal harm (eg, long-term glucocorticoids), very low T-score (eg, less than 3.0), a high risk for falls or history of injurious falls, and a very high fracture probability by FRAX (eg, major osteoporosis fracture > 30%, hip fracture > 4.5%) or other validated fracture risk algorithm.

Meanwhile, patients should be considered at high risk if they have been diagnosed with osteoporosis but do not meet the criteria for very high fracture risk.

Another important update provides information on the role of one of the newest osteoporosis agents on the market, the anabolic drug romosozumab, a monoclonal antibody directed against sclerostin.

The drug's approval by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2019 for postmenopausal women at high risk of fracture was based on two large trials that showed dramatic increases in bone density through modeling as well as remodeling.

Those studies specifically showed significant reductions in radiographic vertebral fractures with romosozumab compared to placebo and alendronate.

Camacho noted that romosozumab "will likely be for the very high risk group and those who have maxed out on teriparatide or abaloparatide."

Romosozumab can safely be used in patients with prior radiation exposure, the guidelines note.

Importantly, due to reports of a higher risk of serious cardiovascular events with romosozumab compared to alendronate, romosozumab comes with a black box warning that it should not be used in patients at high risk for cardiovascular events or who have had a recent myocardial infarction or stroke.

"Unfortunately, the very high risk group is often the older patients,"Camacho notes.

"The drug should not be given if there is a history of myocardial infarction or stroke in the past year," she emphasized. "Clinical judgement is needed to decide who is at risk for cardiovascular complications."

Notably, teriparatide and abaloparatide have black box warnings of their own regardingrisk for osteosarcoma.

Reflecting the evolving data on osteoporosis drug holidays, the guidelines also address the issue and the clinical challenges of switching therapies.

"In 2016, we said drug holidays are not recommended, and the treatment can be continued indefinitely, [however] in 2020, we felt that if some patients are no longer high risk, they can be transitioned off the drug," Camacho said.

For teriparatide and abaloparatide, the FDA recommends treatment be limited to no more than 2 years, and for romosozumab, 1 year.

The updated guidelines recommend that upon discontinuation of an anabolic agent (eg, abaloparatide, romosozumab, or teriparatide), a switch to therapy with an antiresorptive agent, such as denosumab or bisphosphonates, should be implemented to prevent loss of BMD and fracture efficacy.

Discontinuation of denosumab, however, can have notably negative effects. Clinical trials show rapid decreases in BMD when denosumab treatment is stopped after 2 or 8 years, as well as rapid loss of protection from vertebral fractures.

Therefore, if denosumab is going to be discontinued, there should be a proper transition to an antiresorptive agent for a limited time, such as one infusion of the bisphosphonate zoledronate.

The authors underscore that in addition to communicating the potential risk and expected benefits of osteoporosis treatments, clinicians should make sure patients fully appreciate the risk of fractures and their consequences, such as pain, disability, loss of independence, and death, when no treatment is given.

"It is incumbent on the clinician to provide this information to each patient in a manner that is fully understood, and it is equally important to learn from the patient about cultural beliefs, previous treatment experiences, fears, and concerns," they write.

And in estimating patients' fracture risk, T-score must be combined with clinical risk factors, particularly advanced age and previous fracture, and clinicians should recognize that the absolute fracture risk is more useful than a risk ratio in developing treatment plans.

"Treatment recommendations may be quite different; an early postmenopausal woman with a T-score of 2.5 has osteoporosis, although fracture risk is much lower than an 80-year-old woman with the same T-score," the authors explain.

Camacho has reported financial relationships with Amgen and Shire. Disclosures for other task force members are detailed in the guidelines.

This rose ice cream with 24k gold is the perfect antidote to summer 2020 – Billy Penn

The perfect ice cream for summer 2020 just might be a new vegan option flecked with 24 karat gold and lucious petals of real rose.

The idea for the Rose Gold flavor came to Vannah Banana founder Kianu Walker in a brainstorm. It just popped in my head, Walker said. One day I was like, rose gold ice cream ooh, thats fancy.

To make the luxe flavor, the North Philly native takes his standard coconut milk base and blends it with organic flower petals. Chopped up rose is then sprinkled on top, along with carefully-placed edible flakes of gold.

The result is a soft but pronounced floral flavor that almost mimics the floral taste of pink-colored rose ice cream native to the Eastern Mediterranean island country of Cyprus.

Ive never had rose ice cream, said Walker. I dont even know what Cyprus is. I just wanted to make something that could reach the people and still be kind of upscale.

A glinting 8-oz. cup of rose gold will run you $10, double Vannah Bananas usual price, but still relatively accessible.

Launched this May, Vannah Banana is already making its rounds in the Philly restaurant circuit.

Walker has done pop-ups at Queen and Rook, Nourish, Tattooed Mom, Atiya Olas and Vegan Commissary, among others, and some locations have the brand on permanent offer. There are eight flavors, including best-selling cookies and cream, chocolate almond, cinnamon toast crunch and blueberry vanilla.

Walker, 25, basically runs the whole operation on his own.

He handles sales outreach to restaurants and businesses and makes all the ice cream himself, about one to two gallons a day with two small Cuisinart machines. For folks who cant make it to the handful of brick-and-mortars that carry Vannah Banana, named after Walkers sister Savannah, Walker offers pickup in Southwest Philly. He hopes to partner with Black and Mobile in the future for a delivery component.

Walker went vegan himself just four years ago, after noticing how health problems ailed his older family members.

They couldve potentially been preventable by leading a healthier lifestyle, Walker said. It really just hit home with me. It hit me right in the heart.

Walkers not alone in his recent transition to veganism, which is also good news for his new biz. Plant-based eating is on the rise. One study showed that in the 15-year period between 2004 and 2019, the number of Americans practicing veganism rose 300%, to about 9.7 million. Black people are the fastest-rising vegan demographic in the country.

Walkers ice cream is also lactose free, using coconut milk as a base. Thats good news for more than half the nations population. About 65% of people worldwide are plagued by some level of lactose intolerance, according to data from the National Institute of Health. The condition is most common among people of East Asian, West African, Arab, Jewish, Greek, and Italian descent.

Vannah Bananas potential reach and product quality led vegan restaurateur Sarah Scandone to start stocking her new South Street cafe with the ice cream.

Scandone owns Nourish, a plant-based cafe and juice bar, and used to own Hibiscus in West Philly. She opened her newest Philly venture six months ago and said shes noticed the vegan and plant-based food and lifestyle growing locally. Nourish attracted national attention recently, when the restaurants plant-based fried chicken sandwich went viral.

Not only is the product great, Scandone said, but so is its maker.

He just has a great spirit, she said about Walker. You can see that hes putting love into his product. And its very quality Hes very concerned about maintaining that quality.

She recalled one time where the ice cream had melted and refrozen, and Walker refused to sell it because he said the texture had been compromised. He really puts his heart into it for sure, and I love that.

Walker said he spent five months perfecting his ice cream recipe, and did consumer research to help him choose his flavors. As the Internet predicted, cookies and cream is the best selling batch.

Launching during a pandemic, Walker said, created a unique window of opportunity.

He had been helping run a womxn-centered recording studio called Blue Honey Studios, doing some odd jobs and helping with his dads cleaning business to make ends meet. Churning two gallons of ice cream is a piece of cake in comparison, he said.

As a small businessman and a hustler, Walker said, once you have a product you believe in the skys the limit.

Has The Cellular Aging Master Circuit Been Discovered? – Anti Aging News

Research indicates that the average American lives to be around 75-80ish years old. The question is if you had the opportunity to live longer would you take it? This is a rather loaded question thick with philosophical and societal considerations among others.

Humans have long searched for the possibility to extend life and some to even become immortal. But when it comes down to it many consider this to just be a flight of fanciful dreams. But according to research this is not necessarily true. In recent years research is indicating that we can take steps to extend our healthspan and in turn longevity. Now University of California researchers have revealed a groundbreaking discovery regarding the intricacies of cellular aging, and in light of their findings the team suggests that the notion of dramatically extended human lifespan is not so far fetched after all.

Each individuals lifespan and personal rate of aging is determined by the aging of their individual cells. This study set out to investigate different types of cells at different ages, at different speeds based on different causes and stimuli using the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae which provided a suitable model to track the aging mechanisms of various cell types.

The study published in Science found that two cells made of the exact same genetic material and residing in the same bodily location can age in vastly different ways and cellular/molecular trajectories. Using a variety of complex techniques it was discovered that about half of the cells age due to a slow decline in the stability of their nucleus, while the other cells appear to age primarily due to dysfunctional mitochondria.

At the beginning of their existence cells appear to start aging early on in their nucleolar or mitochondrial path of aging, and they continue to follow the same aging process until they die off. The team claims to have been able to find the master circuit that is in charge of controlling these aging processes and paths among the cells.

To understand how cells make these decisions, we identified the molecular processes underlying each aging route and the connections among them, revealing a molecular circuit that controls cell aging, analogous to electric circuits that control home appliances, says senior study author Nan Hao, an associate professor in the Section of Molecular Biology, Division of Biological Sciences.

Their discovery allowed for the construction of a new model of the aging landscape, and the revelation that the team might be able to conceivably manipulate and optimize the aging process. As such using a series of computer simulations the team reprogrammed the master molecular circuit via DNA modifications which resulted in the creation of a novel aging route that offered a much longer lifespan. The team plans to continue testing their model on more complex cells before moving onto human cell testing.

Our study raises the possibility of rationally designing gene or chemical-based therapies to reprogram how human cells age, with a goal of effectively delaying human aging and extending human healthspan, Hao says.

Much of the work featured in this paper benefits from a strong interdisciplinary team that was assembled, says Biological Sciences Professor of Molecular Biology Lorraine Pillus, a study co-author. Why Walking Might Be One of the Best Exercises For Health – Discover Magazine

To walk is to be human. Were the only species that gets around by standing up and putting one foot in front of the other. In the 6 million years humans have been bipedal, our ability to walk upright has allowed humankind to travel great distances and survive changing climates, environments and landscapes.

But walking is more than just transportation it also happens to be really good for us. Countless scientific studies have found that this simple act of moving our feet can provide a number of health benefits and help people live longer. In fact, a walking routine if done properly might be the only aerobic exercise people need.

Many people have taken up strolls around the neighborhood and in nature to pass the time during the pandemic and there are many reasons to keep it up, says Emmanuel Stamatakis, a professor of physical activity, lifestyle and population health at the University of Sydney.

Regular walking has all the standard benefits of aerobic exercise, such as improvements in the heart and circulatory systems, better blood glucose control, normalization of blood pressure and reduction of anxiety and depression, Stamatakis says.

The beauty of walking is that its free, it doesnt require a lot of special equipment and can be done almost anywhere. Most people can maintain a walking practice throughout their lifetime. Yet, in the age of CrossFit and high-intensity cardio, walking is perhaps an under-appreciated way to get the heart pumping and muscles working.It also happens to be one of the most studied forms of exercise there is.

In general, walking is good exercise because it puts our large muscle groups to work, and has apositive effect on most bodily systems, Stamatakis says.

But for the sake of efficiency how much walking should one aim for? Public health experts have drilled into us the idea that we need 10,000 steps a day or about five miles. But contrary to popular belief, this recommendation doesnt come from science. Instead, it stems from a 1960s advertising campaign to promote a pedometer in Japan. Perhaps because its a round number and easy to remember, it stuck. Countries like the U.S. began to include it in broader public health recommendations. Today, its often a default step count to reach on walking apps on smartphones and fitness trackers.

Since the 1960s, researchers have studied the 10,000-steps-a day standard and have turned up mixed results. Although clocking 10,000 steps or more a day is certainly a healthy and worthwhile goal its not a one-size-fits-all fitness recommendation.

Several studies have consistently shown that significant health benefits accrue well below 10,000 steps per day, Stamatakis says.

For instance, a recent Harvard study involving more than 16,000 older women found that those who got at least 4,400 steps a day greatly reduced their risk of dying prematurely when compared with less active women. The study also noted that the longevity benefits continued up to 7,500 steps but leveled off after that number. Put simply, 7,500 is also an ideal daily goal with comparable benefits to 10,000 steps.

Stamatakis notes that 7,500 steps also tend to be in line with common public health recommendations, such as the Centers for Disease Control and Preventions recommendation of 150 minutes of moderate physical activity a week for adults.

But picking up the pace might be a good idea. As with any exercise, the physical benefits one gains from walking depends on three things: duration, intensity and frequency. Put simply: walk often, walk fast and walk long. The goal is to walk fast enough to raise your heart rate even if just for a short burst.

Any pace is OK, but the faster the walking pace the better, Stamatakis says. Its ideal for 3,000 to 3,500 [of those steps] to be completed at a brisk or fast pace.

In a recent review study involving around 50,000 walkers, Stamatakis and his colleagues linked faster walking speeds to a reduced risk of dying from almost everything except cancer. How much you walk, rather than how fast you walk, might be more important for reducing cancer mortality, the review noted.

Similar boosts to longevity have been found in other studies. Recent work published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings analyzed the life expectancy of nearly 475,000 men and women who self-reported as slow or brisk walkers. The faster walkers around a speed of 3 miles per hour (or, a 20-minute mile) could expect to live roughly 15 to 20 years longer than slower walkers, or those who clocked 2 mph (a 30-minute mile.)

Participants who considered themselves brisk walkers had an average life expectancy of nearly 87 years for men and 88 years for women. Increases in lifespan were observed across all weight groups the study included.

Whats considered a quick pace is relative to an individuals fitness level, but it generally falls somewhere between 3 and 5 mph. A cadence of 100 steps per minute or greater is a commonly accepted threshold for turning a walk into a moderately intense exercise.

While we know walking is good for the body, research is also beginning to reveal how it impacts brain function. Particularly, walking might be an effective way to slow or decrease the cognitive declines that come with growing older.

A study of older, sedentary adults found that walking for six months improved executive functioning, or the ability to plan and organize. Studies also have found that that walking and other aerobic exercises can increase the size of the hippocampus, the brain area involved in memory and learning.

Researchers think exercises like brisk walking might improve brain plasticity, or the ability to grow new neurons and form new synaptic connections.

If walking can help you live healthier and longer, can it also help you shed excess pounds? Not exactly. A common misconception is that working out in and of itself can help someone lose weight. Diet is a far more important piece of the weight-loss equation, research suggests.

At least one study illustrates that daily walks make little difference in weight management. Weight gain is common among first-year college students. Researchers wanted to determine if walking could ward off the pounds. Their study, published in the Journal of Obesity, monitored 120 freshman women over six months. Over the course of 24 weeks, the students walked either 10,000, 12,500 or 15,000 steps a day, six days a week. Researchers tracked their caloric intake and weight and found that step count didnt seem to influence the number on the scale. Even students who walked the most still gained around the same amount of weight.

Often, when someone increases physical activity, some of the bodys normal physiological responses kick in to make up for the calories burned. One might start getting hungry more often and may eat more, without realizing it.

Even if with a tight control on daily caloric intake, it takes a lot of walking to accumulate a meaningful deficit. To put this in perspective, a 155-pound person would burn roughly 500 calories walking for 90 minutes at a rate of 4.5 mph.

However, walking does seem to influence a persons body composition. Where a person carries fat might be a more importantindicator of disease risk than body mass index. Avid walkers tend to have smaller waist circumferences. Waist measurements that are more than 35 inches for women and 40 inches for men have been linked with a higher risk for heart disease and Type 2 diabetes.

So a walk in the park maybe wont make you ripped" but it sure beats sitting.

Dr. Keith Whitfield appointed new president of UNLV – KTNV Las Vegas

The Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) Board of Regents voted to appoint Dr. Keith Whitfield as UNLVs new president. He becomes UNLVs 11th permanent president and the first Black president in the universitys 63-year history.

Dr. Whitfield, currently the provost and senior vice president of academic affairs and a professor of psychology at Wayne State University in Detroit, will begin Aug. 24 and serve a 4-year contract.

Prior to his time at Wayne State University, Whitfield was vice provost for academic affairs at Duke University and held appointments as professor in the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience, research professor in the Department of Geriatric Medicine at Duke University Medical Center, and senior fellow at the Center for the Study of Aging and Human Development. He also was the co-director of the Center on Biobehavioral Health Disparities Research.

As provost of Wayne State University, Whitfield is responsible for faculty hiring, promotion and tenure, and budget and policies for faculty and staff. He is also responsible for student affairs, including student success, curriculum, housing and other student-related auxiliaries. Under his leadership, the university achieved remarkable gains in its graduation rate, increased overall enrollment, launched an innovation and entrepreneurship hub, and strengthened multiple business and philanthropic relationships.

An active administrator and researcher, Whitfield has authored or co-authored over 200 publications and has earned funding from the National Institutes of Health, National Institute on Aging (NIA), and the National Science Foundation. His current research focuses on the relationship between stress and longevity in African American families. Hes a member of the NIAs National Advisory Council on Aging.

Dr. Whitfield was one of four finalists who interviewed with UNLV students, faculty, employees, and community members since Monday. The ad hoc UNLV President Search Committee, made up of 29 members, including members of the Board of Regents, UNLV faculty, classified staff, students, and community stakeholders, recommended Dr. Whitfield for the job on Wednesday.

The search committee used in-person interviews and live-stream technology to ensure an inclusive and transparent search process, while conducting the search in consideration for the health and well-being of all those involved.

The son of a U.S. Air Force Lt. Colonel, Whitfield received a bachelors in psychology from the College of Santa Fe and masters and Ph.D. degrees in life span Developmental Psychology from Texas Tech University and did post-doctoral work in quantitative genetics at the University of Colorado, Boulder.

Lung cancer is considered to cause the most cancer-related deaths worldwide. Due to the deficiency in early-stage diagnostics and local invasion or distant metastasis, the first line of treatment for most patients unsuitable for surgery is chemotherapy, targeted therapy or immunotherapy. Nanocarriers with the function of improving drug solubility, in vivo stability, drug distribution in the body, and sustained and targeted delivery, can effectively improve the effect of drug treatment and reduce toxic and side effects, and have been used in clinical treatment for lung cancer and many types of cancers. Here, we review nanoparticle (NP) formulation for lung cancer treatment including liposomes, polymers, and inorganic NPs via systemic and inhaled administration, and highlight the works of overcoming drug resistance and improving cancer immunotherapy. KFC has been experimenting with food innovation process for a while now, including the introduction of plant-based chicken nuggets last year. But a new effort in Russia might just be the Louisville-based company's most ambitious project yet, reports Louisville Business First.

KFC is launching the development of innovative 3D bioprinting technology to create chicken meat in partnership with 3D Bioprinting Solutions research labs based in Moscow, Russia.

The project aims to create the world's first laboratory-produced chicken nuggets, using chicken cells and plant material. According to a release on KFC's website, the idea of crafting the meat of the future arose among partners in response to the growing popularity of a healthy lifestyle and nutrition, the annual increase in demand for alternatives to traditional meat and the need to develop more environmentally friendly methods of food production.
