The SBEP started out with funds from the President's Research Enhancement Fund and spanned neurology, neuroscience, genetics and computational biology. It since has been supported by multiple National Institutes of Health-funded grants aimed at identifying the underlying causes of epilepsy, and it is uniquely integrated within the Comprehensive Epilepsy Program at the Wayne State School of Medicine and the Detroit Medical Center.

Under the guidance of Jeffrey Loeb, M.D., Ph.D., associate director of the Center for Molecular Medicine and Genetics (CMMG) and professor of neurology, the project brings together researchers from different fields to create an interdisciplinary research program that targets the complex disease. The multifaceted program at Wayne State is like no other in the world, officials say, with two primary goals: improving clinical care and creating novel strategies for diagnosis and treatment of patients with epilepsy.

The three studies were published in high-impact journals and use human brain tissue research to identify new targets for drug development, generate a new animal model and identify a new class of drugs to treat the disease. In the first study, "Layer-Specific CREB Target Gene Induction in Human Neocortical Epilepsy," published recently in the Journal of Neuroscience, donated human brain samples were probed to identify 137 genes strongly associated with epileptic seizures.

Researchers then showed that the most common pathway is activated in very specific layers of the cortex, and that it's associated with increased numbers of synapses in those areas. Because epilepsy is a disease of abnormal neuronal synchrony, the finding could explain why some brain regions produce clinical seizures.

"Higher density of synapses may explain how abnormal epileptic discharges, or spikes, are formed, and in what layer," Loeb said, adding that localizing the exact layer of the brain in which that process occurs is useful both for understanding the mechanism and for developing therapeutics.

The first study, which identified a new drug target for epilepsy, precipitated a second study that has found such a drug.

In the second study, "Electrical, Molecular and Behavioral Effects of Interictal Spiking in the Rat," published recently in Neurobiology of Disease, SBEP researchers found that the same brain layers in the rat are activated as in the human tissues and searched for a drug to target those layers. In fact, the first drug they tried, a compound called SL327 that has been used in nonhuman subjects to understand how memory works, "worked like a dream," Loeb said. "SL327 prevented spiking in rat brains," he said, "which not only prevented seizures, but led to more normal behaviors as well."

That finding led to collaborations between Loeb's lab and Nash Boutros, M.D., professor of psychiatry and behavioral neurosciences, and the Belgian drug company UCB.

"Whereas animals that developed epileptic spiking became hyperactive, those treated with the drug and had less spiking in their brains were more like normal animals," Loeb said. "Now whenever we screen for drugs for epilepsy, we look at behavior as well as epileptic activity."

AIS professor triggered red alert on Armstrong blood cells

IT WAS the work of Australian Institute of Sport head of physiology Professor Christopher Gore that determined the chances of Lance Armstrong being clean in the 2009 and 2010 Tour de France races.

Professor Gore examined blood samples taken from Armstrong between October 2008 and April this year for the US Anti-Doping Agency - 29 samples taken by the World Anti-Doping Agency and a further nine taken by USADA.

According to the USADA report on Armstrong, a cluster of five Armstrong samples taken during the 2009 Tour and his two samples during the 2010 event contained an unusually low percentage of reticulocytes, or immature red blood cells that are created naturally by the body. When an athlete adds additional red blood cells to his circulation by transfusing his own stored blood, the body's production of reticulocytes is suppressed.

''When Prof Gore compared the suppressed reticulocyte percentage in Armstrong's 2009 and 2010 Tour de France samples to the reticulocyte percentage in his other samples, Prof Gore concluded that the approximate likelihood of Armstrong's seven suppressed reticulocyte values during the 2009 and 2010 Tours de France occurring naturally was less than one in a million," the report said.

Professor Gore was unavailable for comment yesterday, but AIS director Matt Favier had nothing but praise for his work.

"Professor Gore has worked at the Australian Institute of Sport for more than 20 years and is the head of the department of physiology. Professor Gore earned his PhD in 1989 and has published over 130 papers,'' Favier said. ''He has two professorships and is well positioned as an internationally recognised expert.

"Given his expertise and impeccable credentials, Professor Gore has provided an evidence-based opinion on perturbation in various factors found in the blood of athletes in several anti-doping cases.

"Professor Gore was also a key researcher in work prior to the Sydney Olympic Games that provided the basis for the current process that identifies abnormal levels of markers in an athlete's bloodstream. Moreover, the basic model of the so called 'athlete blood passport' now used by WADA and USADA is built on the foundation of that 1999-2000 research project, which was funded by the IOC.''

Australia has several links to Armstrong. He made his racing comeback in January 2009 at the Tour Down Under in Adelaide, and then last year, he raced professionally for the final time in the same event.

Dietitian Wins Nutrition Award to Become Breast Feeding Expert

A dietitian from North Shore Hospital has won a prestigious nutrition award to support her career ambition to be the first New Zealand dietitian specialising in breast feeding.

Sarah-Jane Westbrooke became a New Zealand Registered Dietitian in 2009 and currently works as a Paediatric Dietitian at North Shore Hospital, where her main professional interest area is neonatal and infant nutrition. She will use the New Zealand Nutrition Foundation and Kellogg New Zealand 2012 Nutritionist Development Award for the training needed to become a New Zealand dietitian with specialist knowledge in breastfeeding. In the longer term Sarah-Jane aims to become the first New Zealand Registered Dietitian and Lactation Consultant.

A Rotary Group Study Exchange to Alaska/Yukon earlier this year fuelled her ambition. Sarah-Jane saw dietitians there working closely with the maternity and child health sector to promote optimum nutrition from pre-conception, through pregnancy, breastfeeding and childhood. US panel urges end to secret DNA testing over privacy concerns

They're called discreet DNA samples, and the Elk Grove, California, genetic-testing company easyDNA says it can handle many kinds, from toothpicks to tampons.

Blood stains from bandages and tampons? Ship them in a paper envelope for paternity, ancestry or health testing. EasyDNA also welcomes cigarette butts (two to four), dental floss ("do not touch the floss with your fingers"), razor clippings, gum, toothpicks, licked stamps and used tissues if the more standard cheek swab or tube of saliva isn't obtainable.

If the availability of such services seems like an invitation to mischief or worse - imagine a discarded tissue from a prospective employee being tested to determine whether she's at risk for an expensive disease, for instance - the Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues agrees.

On Thursday it released a report on privacy concerns triggered by the advent of whole genome sequencing, determining someone's complete DNA make-up. Although sequencing "holds enormous promise for human health and medicine," commission chairwoman Amy Gutmann told reporters on Wednesday, there is a "potential for misuse of this very personal data."

"In many states someone can pick up your discarded coffee cup and send it for (DNA) testing," said Gutmann, who is the president of the University of Pennsylvania.

"It's not a fantasy to think about how, without baseline privacy protection, people could use this in a way that would be really detrimental," such as by denying someone with a gene that raises their risk of Alzheimer's disease long-term care insurance, or to jack up life insurance premiums for someone with an elevated genetic risk of a deadly cancer that strikes people in middle age.

"Those who are willing to share some of the most intimate information about themselves for the sake of medical progress should be assured appropriate confidentiality, for example, about any discovered genetic variations that link to increased likelihood of certain diseases, such as Alzheimer's, diabetes, heart disease and schizophrenia," Gutmann said.

The commission took on the issue because whole genome sequencing is poised to become part of mainstream medical care, especially by personalizing medical treatments based on a patient's DNA.

$1,000 genome

That has been driven in large part by dramatic cost reductions, from $2.5 billion per genome in the Human Genome Project of the 1990s and early 2000s to $1,000 soon. Several companies, including Illumina Inc. and Life Technology's Ion Torrent division, sell machines that can sequence a genome for a few hundred dollars, but that does not include the analysis to figure out what the string of 3 billion DNA "letters" means.

Faculty and students in the cancer biology program at the UNT Health Science Center in Fort Worth are making headway in cancer research.

The program, which started in 2007, offers both masters and doctoral degrees and allows students to research a variety of disciplines involved in cancer biology, such as drug resistance and cancer therapeutics.

The 10 students currently enrolled in the program have been involved in the research of breast cancer, pancreatic cancer, prostrate cancer and ovarian cancer.

Molecular biology and immunology professor Alakananda Basu, the programs graduate adviser, developed the program and currently supervises students research.

The cancer biology program has been highly successful in attracting talented students to join the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, Basu said.

Students also participate in supervising the research of undergraduate and high school students. Savitha Sridharan is a Ph.D. student in the cancer biology program working in Basus lab. Research conducted in Basus lab has focused primarily on breast cancer but has also involved ovarian cancer.

Sridharan has been studying the resistance of breast cancer to chemotherapy, a generalized cancer treatment program, meaning it affects both cancerous and healthy cells in the body. This causes patients undergoing treatment to experience strong side effects, she said.

In order to minimize the side effects in cancer patients undergoing chemo experience, Sridharan has been researching targeted therapy, a cancer treatment method that is better at killing specific cells.

Sonic Healthcare's bid to buy Healthscope's pathology businesses across Australia has largely been knocked back, with the competition regulator this morning ruling against Sonic's bid forHealthscope's Queensland pathology business.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission this morning said Sonic's bid for the Queensland business was rejected becauseit was "likely to have the effect of substantially lessening competition in the market for the supply for community pathology services in Queensland."

This is due to a range of factors, including the reputation, professional relationships, network of collection centres and testing capability it has established in Queensland, supported by its strong position in other pathology markets in Australia.

If Healthscope were removed as a competitive constraint, it is not likely to be replaced in a timely and sufficient way by the new entry or expansion of other pathology providers in Queensland.

The ACCC has approved Sonic's takeover of Healthscope's Western Australian pathology business.

In Western Australia, the ACCC recognised that a number of significant pathology providers will remain following the proposed acquisition, such that the removal of Healthscope is not likely to result in a substantial lessening of competition in that market, ACCC chairman Rod Sims said ina statement.

Last month,Sonic and Healthscope said they were dropping plans for Sonic to buy Healthscope's pathology businesses in New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory, blaming delays in the ACCC decision-making process. This left just the WA and Queensland businesses for ACCC consideration.

Healthscope chief executive Robert Cook told BusinessDay recently thatit was conducting a strategic review of its pathology business in NSW and ACT, and it hadformed the view it is a long term holder of that business."

Sports nutrition experts point way toward provable benefits

The marriage of science and ethical, focused marketing can lead the sports nutrition market out of the dark shadows cast by spooky pre-workout products whose labels feature laundry lists of ingredients supposedly derived from rarely-mentioned botanicals, experts say.

In recent discussions with NutraIngredients-USA, formulation experts in the sports nutrition sphere said a new center of the market is forming, and its coming together around a commitment to safety and to demonstrable benefits.

Start with the research. Im an evidence-based practitioner. There has got to be some evidence. The idea that twelve athletes have used this and it makes them feel great may be a great place to start. But it isnt any way to start a business and develop a product and tell people that it works, said Susan Kleiner, PhD, an author and consultant within the sports nutrition sphere. Kleiner consults with multi-level marketing firm USANA on its sports nutrition lines.

I think that its kind of a two way street. I think that the public expects honesty from manufacturers. But it requires that the manufacturers also lead and do the research to show that there is actually some evidence behind their products, she said.

Recent launches typify trend

Two recent entrants in the sports nutrition sphere typify this trend toward the middle. In mid-September, Idaho-based Thorne Research announced a new line of sports nutrition products , followed a week or so later by the launch announcement of Klean Athlete, a line of sports products from Douglas Labs . Not coincidentally, both of these manufacturers have long histories in the health practitioner side of the dietary supplement business.

We wanted to create a line of products that are not so much operating at the fringe of sports nutrition, Tim Monk, senior vice president of marketing for Douglas told NutraIngredients-USA.

We wanted the parents to feel good that if their son comes home from football practice and has a can of the Klean isolate that they are taking whey protein and there is nothing else in that product.

Real world science

In addition to a commitment to purity and safety, Kleiner said, manufacturers need to cleave to science that drives toward real world benefits, rather that seeking to clear statistical significance hurdles that are too arcane for the middle-of-the-market consumer to care about. Kleiner said having experts with real world experience on board can help manufacturers achieve this goal.
