Why Emily Owens, M.D. Is Grey's Anatomy 2.0

From the moment Emily Owens, M.D. begins, one thought will surely cross your mind: This feels very familiar.

That's because The CW's new medical dramedy is pretty similar to ABC's stalwart Grey's Anatomy from the titular protagonists' names to the voiceovers and even the characters, the tone of Shonda Rhimes' medical drama is present.

Emily Owens stars Mamie Gummer (The Good Wife, Off the Map) as a first-year intern who, while working alongside her best friend/crush (Justin Hartley) and her childhood nemesis (Aja Naomi King), must learn the hard way that hospitals are a lot like high school.

"I think that every medical show now is going to be compared to Grey's," Gummer tells TVGuide.com. "I did a show called Off the Map and it was set in a jungle and everyone was comparing it to Grey's. It's sort of inevitable. Grey's has gotten a little gray. It has more somber notes generally than we do, but Grey's is a great show and it's been running forever, so obviously they're doing something right."

What they're doing right is exactly what Emily creator Jennie Snyder Urman probably hopes to capitalize on considering archetypes from the Shondaland flasgship series can be found in the CW show. Let's take a look at the characters to see how similar they really are:

Emily Owens (Mamie Gummer) is Meredith Grey: Both docs came to their respective hospitals wide-eyed and hoping to make a difference, but where Mer went dark and twisty, Emily is still hoping to hang on to her bright and shiny side, which offers a lot of awkward comedy as she navigates the waters of residency. "She's generally awkward," Gummer says. "She's lacking in social graces, but she's very well-intentioned. She's smarter and has more depth than she's given credit for or that she's aware of. She's a kind of geeky character." And although both characters use voiceover narration, expect more from Emily than what you're used to from Grey's.

Will Rider (Justin Hartley) is Derek Shepherd: Like Derek was to Meredith, this is ultimately the heartthrob that you and Emily will be rooting for her to end up with. No random one-night stands here, though, as the duo went to medical school together and she's been harboring a longtime crush on her pal. "You learn that they have a real friendship founded on a lot of shared experience and true affection," Gummer says. "It's not just a girlish crush that she has." And just like Grey's dragged out the will-they-won't-they tension for MerDer, so too will Emily as Gummer says they're still working through that in episodes they're currently filming.

New DNA hunt for killer of Dutch schoolgirl

DUTCH police have carried out the biggest DNA sweep in the history of the Netherlands, taking samples from more than 6,500 men in 12 separate villages, in a renewed attempt to solve the countrys most infamous murder that of 16-year-old schoolgirl Marianne Vaatstra, in 1999.

The DNA sampling was completed on Thursday, and police said at the weekend that they had successfully collected samples from 89 per cent of the 7,300 men still living within a five-mile radius of the meadow where Vaatstras body was dumped 14 years ago.

The schoolgirls age and the particularly gruesome nature of the murder she was raped, strangled and had her throat cut caused revulsion in the Netherlands. As a result there have been repeated attempts over the years to find her killer, most recently in 2007 using 3D technology.

The department of justice has refused on a number of occasions to give permission for such a wide sweep, but in June it relented on the grounds that DNA testing has become much more sophisticated and that police say they may have some of the killers DNA, which was discovered at the scene.

Hopes of a breakthrough now centre on a Playboy cigarette lighter found in the grass near the victims body in the field in Veenklooster, in the northern province of Friesland.

DNA found on the lighter, which was bought in a local shop, matches DNA found on the dead girls body and police hope it may still lead them to someone closely related to the killer.

One of the most controversial aspects of this murder case in 1999 was that, because the body was found near a centre for asylum seekers, the focus of the investigation and of local anger rapidly became the refugees.

An Iraqi who had recently left the camp was detained in the UK, while an Afghan was detained in Turkey. Both voluntarily gave DNA samples and were ruled out.

DNA 'clears magnate of kidnapping'

THE owner of Argentina's powerful Clarin media group wants kidnapping charges dropped after DNA tests failed to link her adopted children to those stolen during the country's 1976-1983 "dirty war," her newspaper has reported.

The request, filed on Friday, comes after DNA samples submitted by the two adult children of Ernestina Herrera de Noble showed no matches with a DNA data bank of relatives of those who disappeared during the dictatorship.

Some 30,000 people vanished during the military's war on leftist activists.

The Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo, which represents female relatives of dictatorship-era victims, alleges that some 500 babies were stolen from those who disappeared - and then were adopted by pro-junta families.

Of those, only 107 have been identified.

The kidnapping case against Herrera de Noble was originally filed in 2001, and, after years of legal manoeuvering, a court ordered Marcela and Felipe Noble Herrera to submit to the DNA testing.

"There is no more cross-checking to do," attorney Gabriel Cavallo told the daily Clarin.

The case should be closed because "the experts have already determined that neither Felipe nor Marcela are the children of people who disappeared during the dictatorship," Mr Cavallo said.

But the Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo were not ready to admit defeat.

The group has long suspected the Noble Herrera children, both born in 1976, were kidnapped. It says the data bank is being still being updated because many people did not know that their daughters or daughters-in-law were pregnant at the time they vanished.

Biology Systems Engineering nabs grant

WSU researchers will examine food safety following a grant received by the Department of Biology Systems Engineering.

The department was recently awarded the $238,500 grant from the National Needs Fellowship to further research and train doctoral students to promote environmentally friendly means of food production, processing and storing.

The grant will allow three WSU doctoral students to acquire proper training for developing positive food engineering techniques and technologies. They will work with both corporations and U.S. federal agencies to further their studies.

This is a very important grant that both recognizes ground-breaking research in food safety and the need to educate a new generation of leaders in this area, said Howard Grimes, vice president for research and dean of the WSU graduate school.

The new grant will be used to further develop solutions for the constant conflict between providing a large enough food supply for an increasing population as well as meeting the crisis for new energy and environmental requirements, according to a WSU News release.

It is essential that we continue to develop innovative technologies, such as our new microwave that is being introduced globally as a replacement to pasteurization, and research scientists that will continue to discover new ways to keep our food healthy, Grimes said. This grant will do both.

The grant allows WSU researchers to be some of the top in the field and continue to create better technologies for the future of food sciences. It will also allow WSU to maintain its leadership on a global scale in the field of advancing innovative approaches for sustainability, according to the press release.

The three doctoral students participating in this training will be taught through not only classroom techniques, but research environments as well. The overall grant is intended to teach future leaders how to increase and advance food safety, as well as health and wellbeing in an eco-friendly way.

Juming Tang, WSU professor and one of the three researchers participating in the training, stated in the press release that the program supports WSU's vision to become a world leader in developing advanced solutions for safe food production.

The entire grant, titled Educating Food Engineers to Develop High-Performance Integrated Processing and Packaging Technologies that Enhance Food Safety & Quality, is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture.

Company Recalls Nutrition Bars

U.S. Food and Drug Administration

Nearly 80 Types of Peanut, Almond Butter Recalled

Several Crunch brand and Ridge Bar brand nutrition bars are being recalled due to possible health risk, Creative Energy Foods, Inc., announced Friday.

The nutrition bars being recalled include Crunch thinkThin varieties in the following flavors: Mixed Nuts; White Chocolate Dipped Mixed Nuts; Chocolate Dipped Mixed Nuts; Caramel Dipped Mixed Nuts; Cherry & Mixed Nuts; Blueberry & Mixed Nuts; and Cranberry Apple & Mixed Nuts.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the recalled products were sold at retail chain stores nationwide between March 2010 and October 12, 2012.

The nutrition bars are being voluntarily pulled from shelves because they contain blanched roasted peanuts supplied by Sunland, Inc., that may be contaminated with Salmonella.

Salmonella can cause serious and fatal infections. Symptoms include, but are not limited to, fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

The other nutrition bars being recalled by Creative Energy Foods are Ridge Bar brand bars in the Peanut Butter Crunch flavor. These too contain blanched roasted peanuts supplied to CEF by Sunland, Inc., that may be contaminated with Salmonella. The only Ridge Bar products included in this recall are those sold online.

No illnesses have been associated with the Crunch or Ridge Bar products to date.

Consumers who have these products should not consume them and should dispose of them.

Biology teach Brian Henry said, "It's been nothing short of spectacular in regards to teaching certain elements of biology and allowing students to view it in a completely different world."

Students viewed three dimensional models and instructional videos featuring, for example, the pumping of a human heart or photosynthesis.

Henry said, "The images pop out at them. They can almost reach out and touch them, and they are completely engaged from the minute they put their glasses on to the time the bell rings, and from an education standpoint you can't ask for anything more than that."

And that seems to be the case here. Upon first look, it's obviously different than a traditional learning tool we all know - the textbook.

Student Cody Husek said, "Being handed a diagram on a piece of paper and you're expected to look at it hard and look at the ventricles, I think it's a lot easier to get something out of it when you can see it on three dimension with something like this."

Henry said, "When you throw a 3D projection out there and the animations come to life, all of a sudden those kids that weren't engaged at one point are the first ones raising their hands, what's this all about, can we do this, etc."

As a girl and young woman, Annie Dookhan was quiet, unassuming, not one to wear makeup. She was charming but stood out more for her dedication to her studies, and by all accounts appeared headed for success.

The only child of hard-working immigrant parents, she enjoyed their pride as she glided through a prestigious Boston prep school, graduated from college with a degree in biochemistry and appeared headed for medical school.

Now, as she takes center stage in a shocking scandal that has sent the Massachusetts legal system into a tailspin, those familiar with her from school and work are struggling to reconcile the Annie Dookhan they knew with the chemist accused of falsifying criminal drug tests.

''I find it hard to believe that she was an individual who decided to falsify lab results ... that she would turn into someone who did something like that. ... That isn't the person I remember,'' said John Warner, an instructor who gave her A's and A-minuses in 2000 when she took his biochemistry class as a senior at the University of Massachusetts-Boston.

''Obviously, things can happen to people,'' he said. ''Either something happened in her life that changed the person that she is, or this is a deeper story.''

Dookhan's struggle with both personal and professional problems in 2009 - including a miscarriage and a legal ruling that put new pressures on chemists at the lab - may help offer an explanation, one former co-worker said.

''Perhaps she was trying to be important by being the go-to person,'' Elizabeth O'Brien told state police, who shut down the lab in August after discovering the extent of Dookhan's alleged mishandling of drug samples sent to the lab by local police departments.

In her own interview with police, Dookhan said she had not tested all the drugs she claimed she did, forged initials of her co-workers, and sometimes mixed drug samples to cover her tracks.

''I messed up bad; it's my fault. I don't want the lab to get in trouble,'' she said, according to a state police report.

She faces as many as 20 years in prison on obstruction of justice charges. More than two dozen drug defendants are already back on the streets as authorities scramble to figure out how to handle the cases of more than 1,100 inmates whose cases Dookhan handled.

Santa Muerte, San la Muerte and The Fascinating History of Death Personified in Latin America

I took the photos you see above over a series of trips to Los Angeles to document the fascinating phenomonon of Santa Muerte, a sacred figure worshipped as part of the larger pantheon of Catholic saints in Mexico and now also, with the wave of Mexican migrants, in the United States as well. Thought to have its roots in a syncretism of the beliefs of the native Latin Americans and the colonizing Spanish Catholics, the name literally means "Holy Death" or "Saint Death," and she--also fondly referred to as "The Skinny Lady--tends to be worshipped by disenfranchised members of society such as criminals, prostitutes, transvestites, the very poor, and other people for whom conventional Catholicism has not provided a better or safer life.

Doing some research into the matter, I recently stumbled upon Frank Graziano's Cultures of Devotion: Folk Saints of Spanish America, which offers fascinating insight into the genesis of both Santa Muerte and the very similar San La Muerte tradition, which developed independently from a similar native/Catholic syncretism in other areas of Latin America; I also would give anything to see one of the bizarre theatrical productions described below:

In the Jesuit missions, the publication of many books included, in 1705, a translation of Juan Eusebio Nieremberg's De la Diferencia Entre lo Temporal y Eterno. Among the engravings in the book was one of a triumphant personified death, holding a sickle (a variation on the scythe) in one and and an hourglass in the other. Death as a skeleton also appears in another image, which was likewise copied from a European original. 

These engravings document the presence of the Grim Reaper in the missions, but more important in folk culture were theatrical productions staged by the Jesuits for the Guaranís' religious instruction. The performances often included Christ's resurrection, with props of skulls and bones and with the Grim Reaper in the supporting cast for dramatization of Christ's triumph over death. Such performances contributed to fixing the personified image of death within a religious context. 

Almost all the artists in Jesuit missions were Guaranís who were trained by Europeans. These indigenous carvers of saints thought of their work more religiously than artistically: "Image-makers quite literally believed that they were making saints and gods." This observation is particularly suggestive in the context of San La Muerte, whose traditionalal carvers were likewise creating, not representing, a supernatural power. For the Guaraní mission artists, "The reality of things was not expressed by imitating their visual appearance, as in European art, but by capturing their essence." The imagery, including the image of death personified, was adopted from European traditions and then invested with this "essence." The carvings transcend mere representation and become empowered in themselves like amulets.

All of this also brings to mind the wonderful 18th century book La Portentosa Vida de la Muerte (The Astounding Life of Death); more on that here.

MIAMI (AP) Word that a giant eyeball washed up on a South Florida has created a buzz on the Internet and in the marine biologycommunity.

An assistant biology professor at Florida International University in Miami on Friday said the blue eyeball may have come from a deep sea squid or a large swordfish. Heather Bracken-Grissom says she started discussing the eyeball with her colleagues as soon as they saw the pictures on theInternet.

A beachgoer found it Wednesday in PompanoBeach.

Bracken-Grissom says the lens and pupil are similar to the shape of a deep sea squids eye. She notes that the squids eyes can be as large as soccer balls and they easilydislodge.

Florida wildlife officials have sent it to a research facility in St. Petersburg fortesting.

Dookhans struggle with both personal and professional problems in 2009 including a miscarriage and a legal ruling that put new pressures on chemists at the lab may help offer an explanation, one former co-worker said.

"Perhaps she was trying to be important by being the go-to person," Elizabeth OBrien told state police, who shut down the lab in August after discovering the extent of Dookhans alleged mishandling of drug samples sent to the lab by local police departments.

In her own interview with police, Dookhan said she had not tested all the drugs she claimed she did, forged initials of her co-workers, and sometimes mixed drug samples to cover her tracks.

"I messed up bad; its my fault. I dont want the lab to get in trouble," she said, according to a state police report.

She faces as many as 20 years in prison on obstruction of justice charges. More than two dozen drug defendants are already back on the streets as authorities scramble to figure out how to handle the cases of more than 1,100 inmates whose cases Dookhan handled.

Guiding Stars is an objective, nutrition navigation program that provides at-a-glance nutritional ratings for foods found in every store aisle. With Guiding Stars, foods are rated for their nutrition quality and can earn up to three stars based on a debit and credit scoring system. Foods are credited for containing vitamins, minerals, dietary fiber, whole grains and omega 3 and debited for containing saturated fat, trans fat and added sodium or added sugars.The stars are displayed on the shelf tag associated with each food.
