A Yogurt a Day May Keep Disorders at Bay – Anti Aging News

Researchers investigating the gut microbiome recommend that just as you should eat fiber every day, you should also follow suit with fermented foods.

Just about everyone loves yogurt. It tastes amazing, has a lovely texture and provides a number of health benefits. Yogurt is one of the many fermented foods that is fantastic for gut health. Researchers at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln are studying the nuances of the gut microbiome. The hope is that an improved understanding of the gut microbiome will help reduce the prevalence of heart disease, diabetes, and inflammatory disorders.

About Fermented Foods

Fermented foods are considered to be the original version of processed food. Fermentation allows for preservation to keep foods nutritious and tasty. Fermented foods have soared in popularity over the recent years as the general public became more interested in health food. Scientists continue to learn more about the important functions of microorganisms for digestion and overall health.

Aside from yogurt, examples of fermented foods and drinks include wine, beer, cheese, salami, fermented pickles, coffee, bread, and chocolate. These items are altered by helpful bacteria, fungi, and yeasts. These foods aresafe to consume for extended periods of time after the alteration. In many instances, fermentation makes the food that much more healthy and flavorful to boot.

About the Research

The research effort is being spearheaded by Robert Hutkins, an accomplished food science researcher. Maria Marco of the University of California is also leading the study. They are working in tandem with an international crew of scientists to determine if eating certain fermented foods like yogurt increases the number ofhelpful microorganisms.

Prior studies have proved that foods like yogurt, miso, and sauerkraut are tied to a reduced rate of diabetes, heart disease, gastrointestinal disorders and other health problems. Hutkins and a dozen other researchers are reviewing this data. He states that the data showsnumerous health benefits to consuming fermented foods like yogurt. He recommends that fermented foods should be included in all diets.

Hutkins' Background

Hutkins is affiliated with the Nebraska Food for Health Center. This group was established last year to study how gut microbes ward off disease and boost human health. It's food, animal and plant scientists work closely with medical experts to identify and develop foods that boost the human microbiome as well as the micro-organisms that reside in the gut. These scientists arefocused on developing foods that boost the body's immune system and metabolic processes.

About Microorganisms

Microorganisms within the gut are fed by the foods one consumes. Therefore it should come as no surprise that diet is an important factor that determines the functionality of the gut microbiome. This is an excellent opportunity to marry agriculture and medicine to alter how we think about warding off disease and treating disease. The hope is that improved knowledge of the main properties of fermentation methods will provide insights in terms of health benefits. However, at the current moment, only yogurt has been identified as a provider ofspecific health benefits. European health authorities made this recognition.

Hutkins' Findings

Hutkins and fellow researchers from the Netherlands, Canada, the United States, Ireland and France have encouraging findings following a thorough review of the latest research into fermented foods. Thegroup determined the increased interest in the impact of microbiomes on health justifies additional research along with clinical trials to study the functions of micro-organisms that reach the gastrointestinal tract via beverages and food.

Some of the studies within Hutkins' group show that yogurt consumption is tied to a decreased rates of diabetes. Additional research determined that beneficial relationships exist between yogurt and digestion, blood pressure, osteoporosis, and cholesterol. One particular study determined those who consume yogurt on a daily basis were less irritable.

Small-Molecule Talk with Caltech’s New Assistant Professor of Chemistry Alison Ondrus – Pasadena Now

New assistant professor of chemistry Alison Ondrus says shes excited to apply the tools of traditional chemistry to the study of biological problems and thinks Caltech, with its small, interdisciplinary environment, is the perfect place to do it.

Ondrus received her PhD in organic chemistry in 2009 from MIT, where she learned to synthesize structurally complex molecules. From there, she became interested in biology and began studying the Hedgehog signaling pathway as a postdoctoral scholar at the Stanford University School of Medicine. The Hedgehog family of proteins is responsible for many basic functions in animals, including development and organization of the overall body plan. Mutations in Hedgehog pathway genes can lead to congenital deformities as well as both juvenile and adult cancers.

At Caltech, Ondrus plans to use her chemistry background to continue studying the Hedgehog signaling pathway and address mysteries about how essential small molecules, such as cholesterol, control Hedgehog activity during the development of embryos, a process known as embryogenesis.

Your PhD was in synthetic chemistry. What does this involve? In synthetic organic chemistry, you build complex molecules from scratch. You start with a hypothesis for how to make an interesting molecular structure in the most convergent, elegant, efficient way possible based on the reactions that you choose. From there, you go to the lab and try to build the molecule.

How did you go from synthesizing chemicals to studying biological pathways? Id spent a lot of time just looking at the structures of molecules and appreciating the richness of structure, so when I had an opportunity to see how the same principles translated to biological activity, a new world opened up. I started finding myself thinking more and more about all of the small molecules that are already present in our own bodies. Ive always been fascinated by human health and human development, and I started to question how these molecules participate in normal physiology and disease. I started reading to try to find examples of where people had at least circumstantial evidence that small molecules played key roles in regulating a biological pathway, in particular in human health.

Through my reading, I came across the really fascinating pathway that I now studythe Hedgehog signaling pathway.

Why is the Hedgehog signaling pathway important? Hedgehog is important in almost every aspect of how an embryo becomes a human form, and its deficiencies showcase its importance. Its responsible for establishing our body plan, from our left-right symmetry to how many digits we have. As you can imagine, defects in the pathway lead to really acute phenotypes because its so fundamental in these early processes. The pathway also plays a role in various cancers, most notably basal cell carcinomaskin cancerthe most prevalent form of cancer in humans.

We know that certain small molecules that are based on cholesterol can turn the pathway on or off, but we dont know what enzymes produce these molecules, where theyre localized, or how they interact with the Hedgehog pathway. Elucidating these cellular processes is essential to understanding how the pathway controls things like body patterning and brain development, and how that can go wrong and lead to cancer.

If we can understand what components of cholesterol metabolism are necessary for Hedgehog activity, then we can start to address much more specifically some of these medical conditions and intervene in ways that we havent yet considered.

How will you go about studying cholesterol in the Hedgehog pathway? Im going to merge the synthesis part of my background with my understanding of signal transduction to ask questions about cholesterol and related molecules, and their role in regulating the Hedgehog pathway. Small molecules are often the missing link in hypotheses regarding Hedgehog pathway signal transduction. You may have two proteins in the pathway that communicate via these very specific small molecules, but without having chemical tools to ask questions in a precise way, the mechanism remains unknown. What are the exact structures of these molecules? How do they perform this communication? Something thats unique about our lab is that we can synthesize the specific cholesterol molecules needed to answer these questions.

What do you like about Caltech? At Caltech, there are really no barriers. Nobody says you cant do something or that an idea is too unprecedented. Theres a cultural acceptance that doing new things is fundamentally exciting and valuable. Thats what I really appreciate about Caltech.

What do you like to do in your spare time? I love yoga and riding my bike, and reading both Eastern and Western philosophy. I just finished listening to the audiobook of The Structure of Scientific Revolutions by Thomas Kuhn, which I recommend to anyone.

Syrian Prison Executions Anatomy of a Smear Campaign – Antiwar.com

Syria has long been a pebble in the shoe for America, unwillingly to get with the program. Recalcitrant, stubbornly independent. Hafez al-Assad, father of current president Bashar al-Assad, founded modern-day Syria as a secular state back in 1970. His biggest mistake (in the U.S. book) was to side with the Soviet Union. Fast forward to 2011 and his son Bashar is in power. The country is in the throes of a CIA-backed insurgency. Islamist extremists of every extraction, not to mention ISIS, with the common goal of replacing al-Assad with an extreme form of Sunni Islam. Everyone armed with American weapons supplied directly by the US or indirectly through Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkey and others.

Branded a threat to national security, Syria has since been the target of a massive, relentless disinformation campaign orchestrated at multiple levels in the US Threats had to be dealt with, which meant the US government needed total, uncompromising public support. What better way to get that support than to depict your enemy as a sadistic, barbaric dictator? After all, he kills children! Any normal human being would get on the band wagon, hating the enemy on a visceral level.

The smear campaign against Syria in general and Bashar al-Assad personally has been ongoing for years. Weve seen nothing but horror stories come out of Syria. Allegations of chemical weapons, barrel bombing of civilians, terrible crimes against humanity. Were seldom presented with evidence, yet the headlines stick in our minds. Its not whats true, its what people believe, and headlines are great indoctrination tools. Who cares about proof anymore? If the government says it true, it must be true.

The smear machine is again in high gear, with reports of mass executions in a Syria prison accompanied by ghastly headlines such as:

We can react with nothing but horror, wondering how the world can allow such things to happen. We all want President Bashar al-Assad, known in the press as Syrias henchman or more affectionately the butcher of Damascus, to be brought to justice. Who wouldnt? In practical terms, this means regime change, which has long been the American objective. Interventionism.

What a happy coincidence that the Syrian prison stories happen to support American foreign policy objectives! The reason is obvious to some: the enemy of your friend is your enemy. Syria is an enemy of the Saudis, who are Americas best friend. No foreign country has more control of the US government than Saudi Arabia.

The mass media stories on Syrian prison exterminations conjure up images of people tortured to death in dark, dingy rooms. They turn our stomachs. They cry out for justice.

If only they were true.

If my mother taught me anything, it was "dont believe everything you read". Mothers sometimes have good advice, so lets look at the stories more carefully to see if they merit our belief.

The first thing that strikes one is the sensationalist tone. Huge numbers, if inconsistent. CNN goes so far as to give us an exact total: 17,723. A solid, mathematical fact. How they reached that figure isnt important, right? Then we have gruesome depictions such as "exterminations" and "slaughterhouse". Words that will make readers cringe and draw inevitable conclusions even before reading the articles. The headlines say it all.

In a court of law, one would immediately demand proof. Where is the evidence? The fact that all the stories first appeared in August 2016 is interesting. As it turns out, theyre all based on a single report published by Amnesty International.

On the surface, the report is formatted to look like a scholarly paper, with footnotes, dates, methodologies, procedures. All very impressive to the layman. One might realize it departs from a scholarly premise by its title. "Human Slaughterhouse. Mass Hangings and Extermination at Saydnaya Prison, Syria". Provocative, deliberate, even juicy. A truly scholar paper would have been titled something less charged, like "Executions in Syrian Prisons: A Study". Objective, detached, scientific. But Amnestys purpose wasnt to present facts but rather to sway opinion, and at the highest levels: The US Congress, the US courts, the US presidency, the United Nations, not to mention the western public in general.

In the report, Amnesty states (paragraph 5 on page 6) that that "between 5,000 and 13,000 people were extra judicially executed at Saydnaya between September 2011 and December 2015". Evidence please? You have to dig down to paragraph 2 on page 17 to get some justification.

"People who worked within the prison authorities at Saydnaya told Amnesty International that extra judicial executions related to the crisis in Syria first began in September 2011. Since that time, the frequency with which they have been carried out has varied and increased. For the first four months, it was usual for between seven and 20 people to be executed every 10-15 days. For the following 11 months, between 20 and 50 people were executed once a week, usually on Monday nights. For the subsequent six months, groups of between 20 and 50 people were executed once or twice a week"

Lets break everything down.

And what to say about recent reports of a crematorium inside the Saydnaya prison grounds? Weve seen the headlines. Heres one from the Washington Post:

US says Syria built crematorium to handle mass prisoner killings. May 15, 2017.

How terrible! Another outrage from that savage al-Assad. The article opens with a flat statement. "The Syrian government has constructed and is using a crematorium at its notorious Sednaya [Saydnaya] military prison near Damascus to clandestinely dispose of the bodies of prisoners it continues to execute inside the facility", the State Department said Monday.

A statement of certainty: "The Syrian government has constructed and is using a crematorium". No ifs ands or buts about it. Crematorium built and in use. Done. Fact.

The onslaught of worldwide stories about the Syrian crematory should lead to a question: Why is it that reports of this crematorium suddenly exploded on the global scene? Was the crematorium just built? No, according to Washington. With a little digging, we discover that all the stories are tied (again) to a single source: a newly declassified satellite image of Saydnaya prison. The picture was published worldwide. The alleged crematorium is not new at all. The claim for its existence stems from a 2015 spy-satellite winter photo, showing all the prison buildings covered in snow except one. Thats it. No other proof. Not even a single witness, alleged or otherwise. The logic is simple: no snow, ergo crematorium. It goes without saying that the explanations for a building not having snow on it are many, none of which have anything to do with crematoriums. And why would a crematorium NOT have snow? Its not like the interior of the whole building is somehow overheated, melting snow clear through the roof. Crematoriums use simple gas-operated furnaces and vent their hot exhaust through a chimney. The building doesnt change temperature as a whole. A more telling intelligence photo might have been a false-colored thermal camera image showing an unusually hot exhaust plume from the buildings chimney. To be burning the number of bodies claimed, the plume would have been substantial. No such evidence. But there was no snow on the roof.

There are two particularly interesting facts about the crematorium story:

The public has become accustomed to media and government stories peddled without evidence, playing on shear emotion. The pseudo-journalists of today are heavy on accusations and light on facts, especially when dealing with perceived foes of the United States. Were all still waiting for the evidence about Russias tampering with the US elections, Russias hacking of the Democratic National Convention servers, Russias secret ties with Trump. Given whats at stake, if evidence existed it wou
ld have been presented long ago, and the massive US smear machine would have had a field day.

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. Florida police say a 35-year-old high school teacher was unaware they were listening in when she confirmed that she had a sexual relationship with a student.

Tiffany Michelle Geliga, who will turn 36 on May 26, has been charged with two counts of sex assault by persons 24 years or older on a victim 16 or 17 year old.

The mother of a student contacted a school resource officer after she found several text messages between Geliga and her son. When officials questioned the boy, he allegedly told him that while he did not have a sexual relationship with Geliga, he believed another 17-year-old boy had.

Teachers accused of sex with their young students

"The school administration then called in the other student, a 17-year-old male, who said that he had sexual relations with Geliga on two separate occasions," Port St. Lucie police said in a press release.

The boy said in late April or early May he twice met Geliga off-campus, where they had sex in her car.

Detectives say they listened in while the student called Geliga on the phone and had a conversation with her in which she allegedly confirmed that they had sexual relations.

Geliga was booked into St. Lucie County jail.

Concert review: Hill and McGraw thrill fans with their chemistry … – The Spokesman-Review

Tim McGraw and Faith Hill honored 20 years of marriage through a musical journey of romance where obvious chemistry and unmatched talent were on display.

The country superstars brought their 2017 Soul2Soul World Tour to to a nearly packed Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena on Thursday night and their instant connection as they sang the beginning of the 1997 power ballad Its Your Love characterized the night. The first lines of the song were almost entirely drowned out by cheers: Its your love / It just does something to me / Sends a shock right through me / I cant get enough.

Hills impressive vocal and physical stamina were evident throughout her solo portion of the set list. She immediately stole the show with her soaring, easy high notes and stage presence when she sang her 2006 song The Lucky One.

McGraw joined his wife again to sing his cheeky 1995 hit about a new love I Like It, I Love It and the dedicated fans sang every word. Their vocal runs were expertly executed and the harmonies were as in synch as the couples chemistry as they sang to each other.

Hill mentioned that she got her start singing in church and the gospel soul in her voice was indisputable. Her most memorable numbers of the night included her 1998 hit This Kiss and 1993 cover of Piece of My Heart, a song made popular by Janis Joplin.

McGraw emerged from the depths of the stage like the couple did at the beginning of the show to sing Angry all the Time, a song about the ways love can fall apart. Though his stage presence paled in comparison to his spouses dancing and connection to her music, the rich twang and familiar, even tone of his voice did not disappoint.

Later, he sang a snippet of Bruce Springsteens Hungry Heart, which showcased the voice that catapulted him to country superstardom and left fans cheering for more.

His performance of the 2015 hit Humble and Kind featured a tenderness and warmth that left much of the audience in tears. A touching photo and video slideshow featuring universal human emotions worn by those of difference races, genders, ages, religious traditions and occupations accompanied the performance.

The stars selected clothing from two very different closets McGraw donned a simple black shirt, slacks and a black cowboy hat while Hill switched between three sparkly dresses; their outfits perfectly echoed Hills strong femininity and McGraws laidback swagger.

Near the end of the show, the two drew close to their fans when Hill sang Mississippi Girl and McGraw sang Something Like That while weaving through the arenas many rows and grabbing hands. As the stars waved goodbye to the audience and the band and backup vocalists showcased their talents one last time, the audience chanted for an encore.

The fans asked and received a knockout performance.

McGraw and Hill sang their 2007 duet I Need You as they sat on a platform that rose high above the stage much like their voices rose to the occasion of singing the ballad with little instrumental accompaniment. It was an uninhibited and sensitive display of vocal ability and emotion.

The finale blew out of the water all of the performances that had come before, and made for a night the fans would remember long after their ear-shattering shouts ceased.

They finish each others sentences so often that the two comedians (and best pals) could be their own "Before and After" answer on Wheel of Fortune: Steve Martin Short.

Their work in the 1986 buddy comedy Three Amigos ignited the real-life friendship between Steve Martin and Martin Short.

Martin had recently entered the movie business after giving up his longtime stand-up comedy career because of creative burnout. The funnyman then traded punchlines for plucking, releasing several banjo-backed albums with his band, the Steep Canyon Rangers.

Short whom Martin calls Marty hosted a season of "Saturday Night Live" before landing in films such as Father of the Bride (also starring Martin) and appearing in Broadway musical productions.

Even though their interests intersected, the two never took their jokes beyond the friendship, until an invitationto speakat a Chicago comedy conference in 2012 sparked an epiphany.

It was a success," Short said, "because we were reminded that we had a natural chemistry with each other."

They beefed up the comedy bits, added banjo interludes and slapped on a convincing title, An Evening Youll Forget for the Rest of Your Lives."

Martin and Short will perform the show Sunday at the Ohio Theatre, where the same tongue-in-cheek humor will mark the back-and-forth banter in the show.

It constantly is changing and, for a few minutes, we talk to people and tell stories about people and our lives that are funny, Martin said. And then Marty comes out.

The general structure of the vaudeville-esque performance is set, but the comedians make room for improving their witticisms.

We often write notes for each other or make a suggestion on performing or timing, said Martin, 71. Theres nothing problematic between us.

Short, 67, sticks to corporeal improvements.

Steve usually suggests different lines that could make my section better, and my suggestions are about hygiene, he quipped.

Even though Martin and Short have an easygoing rapport onstage, they save the inside jokes for after-hours.

Neither one of us want to do anything the audience cant grasp in some way, Martin said. We dont mind jokes that are funny to us but get a small laugh, but we dont want to do jokes that get nothing. Were paranoid in that way.

For all their ribbing, Martin and Short are quick to praise each others artistic abilities.

Short stands by during Martins finger-picking segments I let them do what they do brilliantly, and Im off doing something I havent yet figured out how to do brilliantly, he said.

Said Martin:Ill tell you what Marty does do brilliantly sing. Hes never sharp; hes never flat.

Just as the friends had no plans to start their variety show, they now have no plans to quit one, either.

Comedy is something you can only practice while doing it, Martin said. Youve got to be in front of it so we just keep booking shows and make the audience suffer until we figure what were doing.

Now Playing Grey's Anatomy Is Spinning Off Into the Fire Department

Thirteen seasons in, Grey's Anatomy is still hot -- so hot that it's getting its second spin-off next season focused on Seattle's finest (and probably horniest) firefighters.

Details are scarce on the project, but what we do know: It received a straight-to-series order and will debut sometime next year. And in lieu of Shonda Rhimes, Grey's executive producer Stacy McKee will serve as showrunner -- which makes sense since she penned Thursday's fiery Season 13 finale. That's probably what sparked the idea! (#sorrynotsorry) The show's currently untitled, but don't worry, Shondaland, we've got some suggestions for you.

1. Sea(ttle) of Flames Look, anything like Seattle Fire is too easy and Rhimes is going to want to distance herself as much as possible from comparisons to Dick Wolf's One Chicago franchise, which she's already halfway to replicating. Sea(ttle) of Flames covers a lot of territory: The fire element, duh, the city, and the city's wet reputation. I'll refrain from the low-hanging "Why do we need firefighters anyway with the rain?" joke.

2. Scarlett's BlazeThis is ideal if Shondaland wants to continue its colored moniker nomenclature. Scarlett's a shade of red and a name! Grey's very briefly introduced "Firefighter Carroll" (Stephanie Czajkowski) in Thursday's finale, but it's unclear if she'd be the spin-off's lead right now. Nevertheless, Scarlett could still be her first name, while "blaze" would be a nod to the eventual use of Bon Jovi's "Blaze of Glory" (you know Rhimes loves her music!).

Furthermore, Rhimes' new, generically titled legal drama For the People was formerly dubbed Mother Court (LOL) and Black's Law. Since the slow is slated for midseason, it's not too late to retroactively make this the ChiJu of the Greysverse and revert to Black's Law. (The eventual cop spin-off would have a blue-hued name, obviously.)

3. Grey's InfernoOr they could retain the "Grey's" name for easy-to-recognize familiarity in the age of Peak TV (and would it surprise anyone if Meredith discovered she had another sister at this point?). Plus, everyone knows the 10th circle of hell is Shondaland's catastrophe-prone Seattle.

4. Byrnes' Ashes Non-colored, no Grey relation, but still pun-tastic. Alternate, far-more-literal spelling: Burns' Ashes.

5. How to Get Away with PyromaniaIn a Law & Order: Criminal Intent-esque twist, the show would be told from the perspectives of both the people who start fires around Seattle and the firefighters who try to put them out. (Fun fact: Czajkowski guest-starred on How to Get Away with Murder in 2015.)

6. Hose Before Bros The spin-off will almost definitely feature a female lead to join the ranks of Shondaland badass leading ladies Meredith Grey, Olivia Pope, Annalise Keating, Addison Montgomery et al., and it will definitely cover the team's personal lives (the logline promises the show will follow "heroic firefighters as they risk their lives and their hearts both in the line of duty and off the clock"). After getting burned (!) by a former flame (!!), our heroine will have a renewed focus on her career, coining the titular mantra, but then a new hoseman joins the firehouse, and well, you know.

The Grey's spin-off will premiere next year.

Every spring the big TV networks mount elaborate stage shows to promote their new seasons to ad buyers, trying to establish the best possible position before beginning talks for all the upcoming commercial time. Some buyers may just as soon skip the spectacle, but networks still consider them a key tool for framing their offering.

For NBC Universal, the stakes are some $6 billion in ad commitments that Linda Yaccarino, chairman of advertising sales and client partnerships, will negotiate in the weeks following the presentation.

NBC's show at Radio City Music Hall ultimately included 10 confetti cannons, six pyrotechnics cannons and over 100 hours of rehearsal. It left out the planned dancing football players and trampoline artists when John Shea, creative director of the event, cut them at 10 p.m. the night before.

Self-ventilating workout suit keeps athletes cool and dry – Phys.Org

A team of MIT researchers has designed a breathable workout suit with ventilating flaps that open and close in response to an athlete's body heat and sweat. These flaps, which range from thumbnail- to finger-sized, are lined with live microbial cells that shrink and expand in response to changes in humidity. The cells act as tiny sensors and actuators, driving the flaps to open when an athlete works up a sweat, and pulling them closed when the body has cooled off.

The researchers have also fashioned a running shoe with an inner layer of similar cell-lined flaps to air out and wick away moisture. Details of both designs are published today in Science Advances.

Why use live cells in responsive fabrics? The researchers say that moisture-sensitive cells require no additional elements to sense and respond to humidity. The microbial cells they have used are also proven to be safe to touch and even consume. What's more, with new genetic engineering tools available today, cells can be prepared quickly and in vast quantities, to express multiple functionalities in addition to moisture response.

To demonstrate this last point, the researchers engineered moisture-sensitive cells to not only pull flaps open but also light up in response to humid conditions.

"We can combine our cells with genetic tools to introduce other functionalities into these living cells," says Wen Wang, the paper's lead author and a former research scientist in MIT's Media Lab and Department of Chemical Engineering. "We use fluorescence as an example, and this can let people know you are running in the dark. In the future we can combine odor-releasing functionalities through genetic engineering. So maybe after going to the gym, the shirt can release a nice-smelling odor."

Wang's co-authors include 14 researchers from MIT, specializing in fields including mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, architecture, biological engineering, and fashion design, as well as researchers from New Balance Athletics. Wang co-led the project, dubbed bioLogic, with former graduate student Lining Yao as part of MIT's Tangible Media group, led by Hiroshi Ishii, the Jerome B. Wiesner Professor of Media Arts and Sciences.

Shape-shifting cells

In nature, biologists have observed that living things and their components, from pine cone scales to microbial cells and even specific proteins, can change their structures or volumes when there is a change in humidity. The MIT team hypothesized that natural shape-shifters such as yeast, bacteria, and other microbial cells might be used as building blocks to construct moisture-responsive fabrics.

"These cells are so strong that they can induce bending of the substrate they are coated on," Wang says.

The researchers first worked with the most common nonpathogenic strain of E. coli, which was found to swell and shrink in response to changing humidity. They further engineered the cells to express green fluorescent protein, enabling the cell to glow when it senses humid conditions.

They then used a cell-printing method they had previously developed to print E. coli onto sheets of rough, natural latex.

The team printed parallel lines of E. coli cells onto sheets of latex, creating two-layer structures, and exposed the fabric to changing moisture conditions. When the fabric was placed on a hot plate to dry, the cells began to shrink, causing the overlying latex layer to curl up. When the fabric was then exposed to steam, the cells began to glow and expand, causing the latex flatten out. After undergoing 100 such dry/wet cycles, Wang says the fabric experienced "no dramatic degradation" in either its cell layer or its overall performance.

No sweat

The researchers worked the biofabric into a wearable garment, designing a running suit with cell-lined latex flaps patterned across the suit's back. They tailored the size of each flap, as well as the degree to which they open, based on previously published maps of where the body produces heat and sweat.

"People may think heat and sweat are the same, but in fact, some areas like the lower spine produce lots of sweat but not much heat," Yao says. "We redesigned the garment using a fusion of heat and sweat maps to, for example, make flaps bigger where the body generates more heat."

Support frames underneath each flap keep the fabric's inner cell layer from directly touching the skin, while at the same time, the cells are able to sense and react to humidity changes in the air lying just over the skin. In trials to test the running suit, study participants donned the garment and worked out on exercise treadmills and bicycles while researchers monitored their temperature and humidity using small sensors positioned across their backs.

After five minutes of exercise, the suit's flaps started opening up, right around the time when participants reported feeling warm and sweaty. According to sensor readings, the flaps effectively removed sweat from the body and lowered skin temperature, more so than when participants wore a similar running suit with nonfunctional flaps.

When Wang tried on the suit herself, she found that the flaps created a welcome sensation. After pedaling hard for a few minutes, Wang recalls that "it felt like I was wearing an air conditioner on my back."

Ventilated running shoes

The team also integrated the moisture-responsive fabric into a rough prototype of a running shoe. Where the bottom of the foot touches the sole of the shoe, the researchers sewed multiple flaps, curved downward, with the cell-lined layer facing towardthough not touchinga runner's foot. They again designed the size and position of the flaps based on heat and sweat maps of the foot.

"In the beginning, we thought of making the flaps on top of the shoe, but we found people don't normally sweat on top of their feet," Wang says. "But they sweat a lot on the bottom of their feet, which can lead to diseases like warts. So we thought, is it possible to keep your feet dry and avoid those diseases?"

As with the workout suit, the flaps on the running shoe opened and lit up when researchers increased the surrounding humidity; in dry conditions the flaps faded and closed.

Going forward, the team is looking to collaborate with sportswear companies to commercialize their designs, and is also exploring other uses, including moisture-responsive curtains, lampshades, and bedsheets.

"We are also interested in rethinking packaging," Wang says. "The concept of a second skin would suggest a new genre for responsive packaging."

"This work is an example of harnessing the power of biology to design new materials and devices and achieve new functions," says Xuanhe Zhao, the Robert N. Noyce Career Development Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and a co-author on the paper. "We believe this new field of 'living' materials and devices will find important applications at the interface between engineering and biological systems."

UVU's largest college appoints a new dean – Daily Herald

Utah Valley University in Orem has announced two new deans.

Steven Clark will replace David Yells as the dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences after Yells left the university to become the provost and vice president for academic affairs at Texas A&M Texarkana.

Clark has been the colleges interim dean since the first of the year.

Stephen Pullen will be the universitys next dean and artistic director of the School of Arts, effective July 1. He will replace K. Newell Dayley, who is retiring.

Clark intends to spend his first few months listening to individuals with UVUs different colleges and departments.

His appointment as dean of UVUs largest college was effective immediately. The College of Humanities and Social Sciences is made up of the behavioral science, communication, English and literature, history and political science, integrated studies, languages and cultures, and philosophy and humanities departments.

Clark has previously been a member and president of UVUs Faculty Senate, an associate dean for the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and was the chair of the Department of Behavioral Sciences. He joined UVUs staff in 2000 after spending time as an assistant professor at Lamar University and a lecturer at the University of New Hampshire.

While he said he does miss teaching as hes moved into administrative duties, hes also enjoyed the challenges the new positions have brought.

I enjoy teaching because you see in the students that they learn something new, but I also like the idea of working at the institutional level with systems and processes and making changes that will affect a lot more students than I can teach personally, Clark said.

Clark said hes supportive of UVU administration as it works with the Legislature for funds as the university grows.

One of his biggest priorities right now is also student success. Clark said he wants more students to be involved on campus and be engaged with the community and their courses. That can be difficult, especially on a commuter campus where many students are nontraditional, work full-time or have children.

He said he recently had a dinner with students who said getting involved, whether it was in student government, in a club or in a research experience, made a difference to him.

It was like a transformative experience to get really involved and not just go back and forth between their classroom and their apartment and work, Clark said.
