Anatomy of a wild-card win: The three-pronged plan that has Tampa Bays offense humming – Yahoo Sports

When the Buccaneers face the Washington Football Team in the wild-card round on Saturday night, the obvious issue for the Bucs offense is a Washington defensive line stacked with five first-round picks (Chase Young, Montez Sweat, Jonathan Allen, Daron Payne, and Ryan Kerrigan) and the interior pressure that front five can create.

Interior pressure has always been Bradys Kryptonite (as one half-smart football scholar pointed out this week), and Brady has not been great at all under pressure this season per Pro Football Focus, hes faced pressure on 155 of his 636 dropbacks, and hes completed 57 of 130 attempts for 675 yards, four touchdowns, five interceptions, and a passer rating of 54.5 the ninth-worst passer rating under pressure among quarterbacks who have taken at least 50% of their teams snaps.

But if Tampa Bays offensive line is able to mitigate that furious pass rush and with guards Alex Cappa and Ali Marpet and center Ryan Jensen, they very well could Washington could be in big trouble in a big hurry.

The relationship between Brady and Bucs head coach Bruce Arians and offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich has taken a while to solidify, but its happened in the last month, for multiple reasons. After a first half of the season in which Brady and his receivers were rarely on the same page, leading to some embarrassing helium throws, everyones adhered themselves to the same playbook. Brady and his targets are in sync, and Arians and Leftwich have this offense humming with three things play-action, pre-snaop motion, and 12 personnel two tight ends, two receivers, and one running back.

Brady had just 67 play-action snaps from Weeks 1-9 the third-fewest in the league behind Philip Rivers and Kirk Cousins and he threw six touchdown passes to two interceptions. Without play-action, he threw 14 touchdowns and five picks. In Weeks 10-17, Brady dropped back on 58 snaps with play-action in Weeks 10-17 with seven touchdowns and one interception to show for it. Without play-action in the second half of the season, Brady threw 13 touchdown passes to four picks. So, maybe its time to dial that up a bit more.

Arians has been resistant to pre-snap motion this season, saying at one point that Peyton Manning didnt need it when Arians was coaching Manning with the Colts from 1998 through 2000, but its a different league now, and Brady benefited greatly from motion during his time with the Patriots. Brady has utilized pre-snap motion for years to help discern coverage concepts, to isolate and remove specific defenders, and to give his receivers an advantage that their physical gifts dont always present.

But its been a bigger part of Tampa Bays offense lately, and the results are obvious in a positive sense. From ESPNs Seth Walder:

This touchdown from Brady to Chris Godwin last Sunday is a perfect example of how motioning a receiver across the formation not only gives Brady a zone indicator, but also creates an unfavorable matchup for the Falcons defense. Safety Keanu Neal checks linebacker Foyesade Oluokun to trail Godwin on the slot fade, and thats not the best call.

Add in the specter of 12 personnel, which is the personnel on this play, and another advantage becomes clear with two tight ends in the formation, there are more blockers. This is especially true when one of those tight ends is Rob Gronkowski, the best blocking tight end of his era. Its one reason Brady has been more willing to take deep shots out of 12.

With 12 personnel and play-action since Week 13, Brady completed 12 of 20 passes for 239 yards, 108 air yards, five touchdowns, one interception. On attempts of 20 or more air yards in those same circumstances, Brady had five attempts, four completions, two touchdowns, one interception. If you see the Bucs in 12, the deep shot is coming.

Heres another example against the Lions hapless pass defense in Week 16. The Bucs have Gronk and Cameron Brate aligned to the right side. Subtle pre-snap motion moving Brate inside tells Brady that Detroit is playing man coverage (which Detroit should never do), the stack creates coverage confusion off the snap, and then its yet another Brady-to-Gronk deep fade in which Gronk bodies the poor defender for the 33-yard touchdown.

Its almost like those two guys have been there before.

Washington doesnt play a ton of man coverage theyre more conversant in two-deep stuff. One example: They have 124 pass-defense snaps in quarters, fourth-most in the league behind the Browns, 49ers, and Bills. Brady against quarters this season: 59 of 83 for 680 yards, 481 air yards, eight touchdowns, and two interceptions. So, if the Bucs can keep the pass rush at bay, Brady can hunt and hes clicking in this offense as never before.

Id say every week is getting a little bit better and a little bit more consistent [with] better communication, Brady said of the structure this week. Were all understanding each other a little bit better each week. Football season is tough theres a lot of things to coordinate, theres a lot of moving parts, different players and in and out, youre running different schemes. But I think weve just tried to not take the foot off the gas pedal [and] tried to understand each other a little bit better each week and try to put ourselves in a decent position. Any time you make the playoffs, its a good feeling and its a great opportunity to be playing this weekend. A privilege, I think, for all of us. I think we want to go make the most of it. Playoff football is pretty special to be a part of, and Ill be excited to be out there Saturday night.

Grey’s Anatomy: 10 Friendships That Should Have Happened But Never Did – Screen Rant

There were many friendships on Grey Anatomy that have come and gone. However, fans are disappointed that these characters didn't get more screen time.

The hit ABC medical drama Grey's Anatomyhas always prided itself on deliveringthe perfect mix of love, longing, loss, pain, and death. Over the years, several amazing friendships have formed between the characters.

From the touchingbond ofteam M.A.G.I.C.to other lovable friendships, such as that between April and Arizona or Miranda and Richard, the serieshas shownhow navigating complex human relationships is a part and parcel of daily life. However, that's not to say these were the best friendships. There were quite a few relationships that went largely ignored. In fact, there were several potential friendships the writers built up but never gave as much screen time to compared to the others. Just take a look at these examples...

Calliope Torres and Addison Montgomery were fan-favoritesand both actorscarved a niche for themselves on popular television with their beloved roles.

Callie and Addison were shown to be on the verge of a beautiful friendshipwhile going through challengesin their personal lives. Although their growing friendship was nipped at the bud as Addison left Seattle for good, this pairing could have, in time, becomeanother set of 'twisted sisters' like Cristina and Meredith.

Owen Hunt was Cristina's love interest for a long while and even ended up marrying her in season 7. The unfortunate thing was that Owen never became particularly friendly with Meredith who was his wife's best friend.

In fact, for some time Meredith wasn't on board with Cristina marrying Owen and her relationship with the trauma surgeon wasn't particularly smooth. In time, the two of them have become colleagues who respect one another but have never really been friends as such. However, asveterans of Grey Sloan, nothing would make more sense than for these two to be good friends.

Cristina Yang was one of the most beloved characters on Grey's as was the sprightly Callie Torres. Cristina was of course Meredith's best friend, but there was a brief period of time when Callie shared rooms with Cristina after both had broken up with their respective significant others.

Callie and Cristina were on friendly terms but their relationship never culminated into one where they would confide in each other like good friends usually do. Of course, Cristina was never very attached with anyone other than Meredith but she and Callie would have made a great empowered duo, with both having such strong, quirky personalities.

When Teddy Altman joined Seattle Grace, she was at a loose end with no real friends. The only person she knew was Owen who chose Cristina over her. But some efforts were made by the likes of Arizona Robbins to make her feel welcome and comfortable.

Arizona, adorably, asked Teddy to join her, Callie, and Bailey for a girls' night. While none of the others particularly wanted to spend time getting to know their new colleague, they tried to be gracious nonetheless. Arizona also offered Teddy advice from time to time, such as hooking up with Mark Sloan to take her mind off Owen. The two wouldhave made good friends and could have even become a great couple if Arizona hadn't left.

Cristina Yang was no easy person to make friends with and definitely not when it came to interns or surgical residents who she couldn't care less about.

But there was one resident, Stephanie Edwards, who had something of the makings of another Cristina in her. She was smart, competitive, and driven. In fact, she could have, in time, gone on to become a second Cristina Yang of sorts, although more emotionally connected and less mechanical. A friendship between these two would have made all the sense in the world.

April Kepner was one of those people who was good through and through, albeit a bit annoying at times, and Lexie Grey was possibly the sweetest, most gentle character the show's ever had.

These two women could easily have been friends, makingeach otherstronger. In contrast to the twisted sisters, Cristina and Meredith, April and Lexie could have been something like the good sisters, helping people and fighting all the meanness directed their way together.

Two other people who would have made good friends were Maggie Pierce and her brother-in-law,Derek Shepherd.

In fact, when Maggie feltlost initially aftershe first joined the hospital, and Meredith was giving her the cold-shoulder, it was Derek who made efforts to make Maggie feel more at home. He even invited her home for dinner, trying to patch things up between Maggie, Meredith, and Richard. Had Derek lived, his cute camaraderie with his young sister-in-law would have been something to watch out for.

Another person who could have made a good friend for Derek was Bailey. Derek was shown to be on friendly terms with Burke and Webber, but he was also cordial with Bailey, who opened up to him about her past.

In fact, fans might recall a cute moment way back in season 4, when Derek and Miranda told each otherabout their respective history as teenagers. They found out that they were both in the high schoolband, and were, for the most part, lonely adolescents. Moreover, throughout Derek's time in Grey Sloan Memorial, he and Miranda often acted as each other's conscience, offering valuable advice, albeit in an off-hand manner. Although they never properly acknowledged it, these two could have been loyal friends intime.

Tom Koracick has been a polarising character from the start whenhe was introduced as Amelia's mentor and friend. He has a snarkysense of humor and is self-aggrandizing. However, the viewers know he has a softer side to him after learning of his profoundly tragic past.

One of those aware that Tom lost his only son is Bailey. Bailey started out by hating Tom but gradually learned to respect him grudgingly once she found out about his past. With both being strong personalities, the two would always be at loggerheads but can also be seen supporting one another in spite of disagreements. If Tom manages to recover from the Covid, the Bailey-Koracick friendship might be something to think of.

This might seem like an unlikely friendship but Alex Karev did respect Richard. When he initially joined the hospital as an arrogant surgical intern, Richard was one of the people who could keep Alex mellowed for all his insolent ways.

The two even sharedsome hilarious moments when Richard decided to help Alex give Jo Wilson's date, Jason, a hard time by teasing and humiliating him relentlessly. Alex also turned to Richard for advice more than once and asked him to take over as interim chief at Pacific-North Hospital when he was away. Let's not forget that Richard was also one of the few people Alex wrote to say goodbye to when he left abruptly in season 16.There was a strong bond here that went under the radar.

There are many iconic and memorable romances on Grey's Anatomy. However, have fans ever thought that a character was better suited with someone else?

The popular primetime medical drama Grey's Anatomy has been around for what seems like an eternity now. The show has, over the years, given fansa gamut of human emotions with a barrageof relatable characters, navigating a complex range of relationships.

From couples that make no sense, like Jackson Avery and Maggie Pierce, to those that are absolutely adorable together such as Callie and Arizona, Jackson and April, and of course, Derek and Meredith, relationships on Grey'shave been an integral part of the show's astounding success and record run.

FHowever, do fans ever feel like there is often great chemistry between other characters that largely goes unexplored? Could these relationships have become the show's greatest romance ever? Here are some great contenders that unfortunately never happened.

Owen Hunt joined the hit medical drama early on and was introduced as Cristina Yang's love interest. Upon first impression, Owen seemed like the perfect match for Cristina as they both shared the same passion for medicine and their work.

However, over the years Owen's storyline went haywire, as he went from one woman to another, first cheating on Cristina, then hurriedly married Amelia, and getting Teddy pregnant by appearing at her door out of nowhere. Even at present, his relationship with Teddy is on the rocks with the latter having cheated on him. Owen might be a Grey's veteran but one wonders if, after Cristina, he might have beenbetter off alone. At least for a little while or until he figures things out.

Erica Hahn was the brilliant cardiothoracic surgeon who came like a gush of wind after Preston Burke left Seattle Grace and then left as hurriedly as she came.

However, in that brief period of time, she was shown to have developed a relationship with fan-favorite, Callie Torres. For both of them, a casual hook up turned out to be an eye-opener for the two women as Erica realized that she was happier dating women and Callie started exploring her bisexuality. Erica and Callie's story ended abruptly but it would have been interesting to watch them navigate their new-found sexuality together.

The 'Ortho god' Atticus Lincoln seems to be in a stable relationship with Amelia Shepherd at the moment although knowing Amelia, things could blow up at any moment.

But Link also sharesa pleasant, friendly equation with Jo Wilson, who he happened to know in the past. And seeing how things turned out between Jo and Alex, maybe Link would have been a better option, for he seems more anchored and understanding than Alex ever was. However, given that this is Grey's, there might be hope for Link and Jo still.

Another couple that seemed to be on the verge of happening but never culminated was Alex and Addison. For those who forgot, it was Addison who tried to mellow down the arrogant surgical intern in his early days and drew Alexinto pediatrics, which heultimately excelled.

The two were attracted to each other and sparks flew, which led to the couple hooking up. Of course, Alex was way too immature to be in a serious relationship with someone like Addison but that in itself would have been fun to watch. Addison'spartnership with Derek, although complicated, was never meant to be, so maybe she could have been in a quirky relationship with the smartmouth Alex Karev.

Mark and Callie were best friends with benefits and Callie even got pregnant with Mark's daughter. The two were very comfortable with each other and their camaraderie was mostly uncomplicated and fun.

As always, life and relationships are complex in Grey's Anatomy.So the two people who were best fit for each other don't end up together. Still, if Callie had decided she wanted to start a relationship with Mark, fans wouldn't have complained.

In season 4, young Lexie Grey encountered a patient with a giant tumor in his carotid artery, Nick Hanscom. Nick had a sense of humor, was flirtatious, and soon struck up a bond with Lexie who seemed to enjoy talking to him.

In fact, there were definite signs of chemistry between the two. After all, Lexie was soft by nature and Nick was the kind of guy who could make light of a very serious situation. Hewas also the first patient Lexie was entrusted with and his tragic death hit her hard. Had Nick survived, the writers might have considered giving the two a chance.

Grey's Anatomy is as much about the patients as it is about the doctors and staff at Grey Sloan Memorial. Meredith has saved numerous lives in the course of seventeen long seasons, but very few patients have dared to flirt with her.

One such patient was Nick Marsh in season 14, a handsome transplant doctor who had just undergone a kidney transplant himself. He might not have been 'McDreamy' but he was quite charming in his own way and was clearly hitting on Meredith, who didn't seem to mind the interest. Meredith and Nick would have made a really cute couple together, but that never happened.

Meredith went on a blind date in season 15 after her matchmaker patient, Cece, convinced her to start going out again. And who should she meet butHow I Met Your Motheralum, JoshRadnor, who appeared as software engineer Jon here.

The two connected instantly and Meredith even seemed okay with giving Jon a chance, canceling her afternoon to spend time with her date. However, once Jon mentioned that he wasn't comfortable with single moms, this ended her interest in him. Although the writers didn't take the narrative further, fans adored Jon with Meredith and wouldn't mind seeing him make a comeback.

Actor Martin Henderson appeared in season 14 as Nathan Riggs, an ex-colleague and former friend of Owen's and a potential love interest for Meredith Grey.

Nathan seemed like a fitting replacement for Derek Shepherd although Meredith didn't give him a chance at first. And by the time she did, Nathan's ex-fiance Megan was back in the picture. Meredith and Nathan only had a few moments together but it wouldhave been fun to see them as a couple.

Remember the adorable George O'Malley, who died a devastating death in season 5 after throwing himself in front of a bus to save a random stranger? For those who don't remember, Lexie Grey had a phase when she was infatuated by George right after she joined Seattle Grace as a surgical intern.

The two even became roommates for some time, with Lexie trying to draw George's attention with her kind and thoughtful ways. But George's storyline had already become chaotic by the time and for some reason, he never noticed Lexie. Could one have imagined how sweet this pairing would have been ifGeorge had recognized how great Lexiewas?Unfortunately, fans never got to see them together.

Shonda Rhimes Called This ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Character the ‘Walking Validation of My Dreams’ – Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Producer Shonda Rhimes is hitting it big once again, this time on Netflix. With her eight-episode series Bridgerton trending at the top of the streaming service, Rhimes continues to strike gold when it comes to making top shows.

The Greys Anatomy creator catapulted to stardom after launching the medical drama on ABC in 2005. Bringing a memorable ensemble cast to the forefront, one character in particular was especially close to Rhimes heart.

In her 2016 book, Year of Yes, Rhimes described the creative process in bringing a character to life.

For me, characters may begin with the words I put on paper, but they are flat, Rhimes explained. Like empty balloons you pour out of a bag. The actor breathes the air into the words and suddenly what was flat is now fully three-dimensional and alive.

When Rhimes created one particular stand-out surgeon on Greys Anatomy, she put pieces of herself into the characters makeup.

I wrote and Sandra Oh breathed and what floated up was Cristina, Rhimes said of Ohs role as Dr. Cristina Yang. OUR Cristina. The one Sandra and I made together. That is who Cristina was. A piece of my soul and a piece of Sandras soul wound around each other and placed on television.

The Bridgerton creator revealed that she was able to see her own goals achieved through Cristina, creating a character that was fueled by ambition.

Its no wonder I leaned into Cristina, wrote her more eloquently, colored her more brightly, drew outside her lines, Rhimes explained. Let her do and think and live in ways that voiced my dreams. She did not want to get married. She had a genius that she chased she loved her work.

While Rhimes is the mom of three daughters and Cristina was firm about not wanting kids, the Greys Anatomy producer wanted to explore a womans journey on a different path.

I gave her a strident desire to not have children because while I adore children, I wanted to watch her fight that feminist battle and win, Rhimes revealed. I wanted us to watch and admire a woman who did not want the things we have all been told we are supposed to want I wanted us to befriend a woman who was busy throwing out the fairy tale and writing her own story.

Over the course of ten seasons, Cristina was seen in a plethora of life-changing situations. By creating the characters resilient spirit, Rhimes was strengthened in her own life.

Cristina survived things in ways most characters wouldnt, Rhimes wrote. She performed surgery with a gun pressed to her head. And she healed by catching a giant fish and holding it in her arms. During my darkest hours, my quietest saddest moments, my loneliest times, writing Cristina Yang fortified me.

Rhimes shared that she intentionally wrote such affecting storylines for Cristina as a way to empower herself and others.

Those stories were proof that I could survive anything, Rhimes remarked. Sandras playing those moments out, breathing life into those words, into Cristina... Sandras acting those words made my survival and resilience feel possible. Cristina Yang was the walking validation of my dreams.

Rhimes added, As a nerdy introverted writer with an eye twitch who could barely speak up for herself? Let me tell you, dear friends, that was magic. And that kind of magic is crazy special.

City of Hope Scientists Have Developed a Precision Medicine Tool That Predicts If Chemotherapy Will Produce Debilitating Side Effects in Older Adults…

DUARTE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Researchers at City of Hope, a world-renowned independent research and treatment center for cancer, diabetes and other life-threatening diseases, have developed a tool that could predict if older adults with early-stage breast cancer will develop a severe or deadly reaction to chemotherapy.

This first-of-its-kind risk assessment tool called the Cancer and Aging Research Group-Breast Cancer (CARG-BC) Score helps oncologists make personalized treatment recommendations. Oncologists can discuss the score and its significance with early-stage breast cancer patients age 65 or older. Together, an informed decision about chemotherapy can be made as treatment benefit is weighed against quality of life concerns, said Mina Sedrak, M.D., M.S., co-first author of the new study and deputy director of clinical trials for the Center for Cancer and Aging Research at City of Hope.

Despite remarkable advances in cancer treatment, tools to characterize the toxicity of cancer therapies have remained virtually unchanged for the past 20 years, Sedrak said. This is a new precision medicine tool. Rather than basing treatment decisions and care on demographic data for a disease, we now can offer each elderly, early-stage breast cancer patient individualized toxicity information that could help align treatment with their goals for lifestyle, quality of life, longevity and other priorities.

More than 72% of older patients with cancer reported that they would not choose cancer treatment that results in functional impairment even if it improves survival, Sedrak said.

If the risk of chemotherapy toxicity is known in advance, oncologists and patients could work together to decide whether chemotherapy is the right choice. Treatment modifications such as dose reductions and longer periods between chemotherapy delivery could be recommended. Older patients could also preemptively be referred for supportive care interventions such as consults with physical therapists, occupational therapists, social workers and pharmacists, who could evaluate potential drug interactions with existing medications for chronic ailments. Additionally, patients could have someone evaluate their home for safety or necessary modifications.

The study, published on Jan. 14 in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, spanned 16 institutions across the nation, with City of Hope being the lead institution. It included 473 patients age 65 or older with Stage 1-3 breast cancer (283 in development cohort; 190 in validation cohort). They were all treated with chemotherapy either before or after surgery and were evaluated for geriatric and clinical symptoms predictive of severe (grade 3), debilitating (grade 4) or deadly (grade 5) side effects due to chemotherapy.

Though chemotherapy is an effective way to treat early-stage breast cancer, it also carries a risk of side effects. There is a delicate balance between the benefits of chemotherapy and the harm of possible side effects, said Canlan Sun, M.D., Ph.D., senior author of the study and associate research professor in the Department of Supportive Care Medicine at City of Hope.

The development of severe chemotherapy toxicity not only can harm the patient, but it can also compromise an older adults ability to complete the full course of chemotherapy, possibly reducing the potential benefit of the cancer treatment, she added.

Sedrak noted that most women with early stage breast cancer have a potentially curable disease and some would benefit from chemotherapy after surgery. Unfortunately, older adults aged 65 and over, who comprise about half of all breast cancer diagnoses, are significantly less likely to be offered chemotherapy compared to younger patients sometimes because their doctors fear they wont be able to tolerate it, he said. Older adults are also underrepresented in cancer trials, and we know little about how best to treat this heterogenous group.

The CARG-BC score is derived by combining eight disease and patient-reported predictors: use of an anthracycline chemotherapy, Stage 2 or 3 breast cancer, longer planned treatment duration, abnormal liver function, low hemoglobin, falls, limited walking ability and lack of social support.

This risk prediction model is an extension of prior work from the national Cancer and Aging Research Group led by scientists at City of Hope and elsewhere. As a National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center, City of Hope offers integrated, multidisciplinary care that includes supportive care services addressing physical and emotional issues that can arise during and after treatment.

The newly developed CARG-BC score outperformed existing measures of patient performance status that are widely used in oncology such as the Karnofsky performance status or Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status, both of which were developed and validated in younger patients.

Those clinician-based eyeball tests are imprecise and subjective, Sedrak said. They do not detect important factors such as functional reserve or the ability to respond to stress, which vary greatly between older patients of the same chronological age and are valued by patients and caregivers.

As a next step, the researchers will look to improve the chemotherapy toxicity risk assessment tool with more biological markers. They will attempt to identify biomarkers that could predict severe or deadly side effects to chemotherapy. They are working to identify interventions to support elderly breast cancer patients so that they derive the most benefit and the least toxicity from chemotherapy.

The researchers will also continue their efforts to improve access to cancer clinical trials for all patients, leveraging new innovations in technology and widely used social media networks.

I replied, Well, they showed that individuals who received the active vaccine injection were much less likely to get the infection than those who got a placebo or dummy injection without active vaccine.

She listened intently with a slightly worried expression.

But to make the study completely objective, it was double-blind, I said.

Whats that? she asked.

Double-blind means that both sides are blind or not given information about who got the real vaccine or placebo, I replied. Not the clinical team with the doctor, nurse, and other research staff on one side, and the patient and family and friends on the other side. No one directly involved with the patient in the study is allowed to know.

Her reaction was spontaneous and swift: But thats against human nature! How can we prevented from knowing if we are getting the real vaccine?

As a researcher, I have conducted many clinical trials with patients who express concern about the possibility of receiving a placebo, or find it hard to comprehend the restrictive rules of a double-blind design. These are counterintuitive methods, though required by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the European Medicines Agency (EMA), and other agencies worldwide. They are intended to increase objectivity because there is ample evidence that a positive bias naturally occurs in most patients and clinicians involved in a study.They expect the vaccine to be safe and effective, and their expectation often has a healing power of its own.

A long history confirms the need for research objectivity. Until the 18th century, average human longevity ranged from 30 to 50 years; it barely budged despite the thousands of new therapies pursued across the world, some based on ancient texts from a variety of cultures. But scientific proof was gradually replacing beliefs. Revolutionary advances like the discovery of antibiotics in the mid-20th century transformed human survival. Experimental methods to improve the accuracy of research findings, including the objective methods used routinely nowadays in clinical studies, were codified by scientists in the 20th century. During the last 2 centuries, the average human lifespan nearly doubledto over 75 years. The FDA adopted scientific methods by requiring that research studies in humans be conducted in phases. Phase 1 involves small-scale studies to determine safety, and at different doses, phase 2 involves mid-sized, double-blind studies with a placebo group to obtain initial information on efficacy and safety of the optimal doses identified in phase 1, and phase 3 requires large-scale, double-blind clinical trials with placebo built upon results from phases 1 and 2. If phase 3 results are positive, with sufficient safety and efficacy, the vaccine or drug is approved. But the work is not done. Phase 4 then begins with post-approval monitoring of side and adverse effects in those receiving the approved treatment or vaccine in standard clinical care.

Why are there so many hurdles to cross before approval, and more afterwards? Less than 1 in every 100 potential treatments makes it all the way from the basic science laboratory through clinical trials and finally regulatory approval for patient care. In other words, if we did not have the current regulatory system, tens of thousands of new vaccines, drugs and medical devices would be used widely, despite over 99% of them not meeting necessary standards of safety and efficacy. That would be like throwing us back to the healthcare standards of medieval and even earlier times.

My experience during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic highlights the struggle to balance scientific knowledge with private beliefs and intrinsic daily habits. In late February 2020, I acquired N-95 masks and face-shields from our hospitals central supply and instructed all my clinical research staff to wear the mask and face-shield when seeing patients. In March 2020, just before the lockdown, we saw our last outpatient, who subsequently was hospitalized a few days later with COVID-19. I did not become ill but a few of my research staff members did, fortunately only with moderate symptoms that resolved in several weeks. Judging by when they became ill, they probably got the infection from that patient. When I asked, they told me that they had not worn the mask and face-shield continuously, as I had instructed. These team members routinely follow my instructions in carrying out their daily work but wearing a mask and face-shield went against their usual habits and beliefs.

If this was happening in a healthcare setting, the problems that we have seen with the publics response to the pandemic should not come as a surprise. To ensure a robust pandemic response in 2021, we all will need to better understand why so many people do not act in their own interest, and that of others. Public education about the science and the studies that produced FDA approval is essential, as is modeling by trustworthy, influential and diverse people doing the right thing.

But will that be enough? What do we need to know about those individuals (and groups) who demonstrate vaccine hesitancy, as has been abundant in refusals of flu and even measles vaccinations? The beliefs that underlie vaccine hesitancy may seem counter-intuitive, but they are prevalent and constitute a danger to that individuals health and to that of others. These actions may seem to go against the self-protective and social compact in human nature, except that it is other aspects of human nature, instinctive fear of the new and unknown as well as entrenched beliefs and habits, that are driving them. Let us hope it does not take centuries to understand what is going on and what works to alter vaccine hesitancy. We do not have the time for that.

2. This particular workout format packs the best longevity punch

Any exercise is better than none, so if theres a format you love and that gets you moving, you should one hundred percent stick to it. But if youre open to new things or are already a devotee, research this year shows that HIIT workouts are the most effective form of fitness from a longevity standpoint.

The study looked at the effects of two weekly HIIT workouts per week on 70 to 77 year-olds and found that all-cause mortality was 36 percent lower in that group than in the studys control group (which did whatever kind of exercise they liked). Thirty-six percent!

The specific HIIT routine the studys participants engaged in was the 44 format, which divides each workout into a 10-minute warm-up period followed by four high-intensity intervals. Each interval consists of one to two minutes of extreme exertion, at about 90 percent of maximum heart rate, followed by a three-minute period at about 60 percent of heart rate. 3. If your workouts dont include this one move, they probably should

Technically, research just shows that if you can do this one move easily, that in and of itself is a good indication of longevity: the squat. So while this doesnt necessarily show that doing squats will increase your lifespan, it stands to reason that one way to ensure you can do them easily is to, well, do themand frequently.

One of the reasons its such a good exerciseboth to practice frequently and as a longevity predictor is that its functional, meaning we sort of need to be able to execute squat-like movements regularly in everyday life when, for example, we move from sitting to standing. Reversing The Aging Clock With Epigenetic Reprogramming – Bio-IT World

January 13, 2021 | As aging researchers are aware, birthday candles are not a good guide to either human health or longevity. But there is an abundance of clues in the genome and, as suggested by studies in animals, some of age-related damage is reversible by removing or reprogramming problematic cells or blocking the activity of key proteins.

As it turns out, DNA methylationa frequently-used biomarker of biological ageis not just marking time like a clock on the wall but actually controlling time within cells, according to David Sinclair, an expert on aging at Harvard Medical School and cofounder of 4-year-old Life Biosciences. The revelation emerged from a study recently published in Nature (DOI: 10.1038/s41586-020-2975-4) where Harvard researchers showed, for the first time, that the pattern of DNA methylation in the genome can be safely reset to a younger age.

It was in fact a prerequisite to restoring youthful function and vision in old mice, says Sinclair, who has spent most of his adult life studying the epigenetic changes associated with aging. Up until a few years ago, he thought the process was unidirectional and that cells ultimately lost their identity and malfunctioned or became cancerous.

It seemed crazy to try to get proteins to return to the place they were in young cells, Sinclair says. Proteins move around in response to age-associated DNA damage and end up in the wrong places on the genome, causing the wrong genes to be turned on, but scientists did not know if proteins could go back, where the instructions were stored, or if they were being stored at all.

As covered in his 2019 bestseller Lifespan, Sinclair now believes that aging is the result of the so-called epigenetic changes scrambling how the body reads genetic code. Were essentially looking for the polish to get the cell to read the genome correctly again, he says, a process he likens to recovering music on a scratched CD.

Yamanaka Factors

Sinclair and his research associates have been focusing on the eye, in part because retinal tissues start aging soon after birth, he explains. While a damaged optic nerve can heal in a newborn, the injury is irreversible in a 1-year-old.

Yuancheng Lu, a former student of Sinclairs, was also interested in the eye because his family has a vision-correction business and recognized sight loss as a huge unmet need, he continues. We thought if we could take the age of those retinal cells back far enough, but not so far that they lose their identity, we might be able to see regrowth of the optic nerve if it was damaged.

Among the foundational work was a 2016 study in Cell (DOI: 10.1016/j.cell.2016.11.052) by Life Biosciences cofounder Juan Carlos Izpisua Belmonte (Salk Institute for Biological Studies) who partially erased cellular markers of aging in mice that aged prematurely, as well as in human cells, by turning on Yamanaka factors Oct4, Sox2, Klf4, and c-Myc (OSKM) highly expressed in embryonic stem cells. Short-term induction of OSKM ameliorated hallmarks of aging and modestly extended lifespan in the short-lived mice.

The lifespan gain was widely dismissed as an artifact of shocking a mouse, says Sinclair, since the mice died if the treatment continued for more than two days. Although the human health implications appeared unlikely, his Harvard team decided to try the approach using an adeno-associated virus as a vehicle to deliver the youth-restoring OSKM genes into the retinas of aging mice.

The technology kept killing the mice or causing them to get cancer until Lu decided to drop the c-Myc genean oncogenein his experiments using human skin cells. He looked at [damaged] cells that had been expressing OSK for three weeks and the nerves were growing back toward the brain to an unprecedented degree. Moreover, the cells got older by the damage and younger by the treatment.

As the broader team went on to show in the Nature paper, the trio of Yamanaka factors effectively made cells younger without causing them to lose their identity (i.e., turning back into induced pluripotent stem cells) or fueling tumor growth even after a year of continuous treatment of the entire body of a mouse. If anything, the mice had fewer tumors over the course of the study, says Sinclair.

Although the mice needed to be autopsied to definitively measure tumor burden, Sinclair says the study will be repeated to learn if the epigenetic reprogramming technique can increase lifespan.

Findings have implications beyond the treatment of age-related diseases specific to the eye, says Sinclair. Aging researchers have published studies showing other types of tissues, including muscle and kidney cells, can also be rejuvenated.

Clocked Results

In the latest study using mice, epigenetic reprogramming was found to have three beneficial effects on the eye: promotion of optic nerve regeneration, reversal of vision loss with a condition mimicking human glaucoma, and reversal of vision loss in aging animals without glaucoma. The latter finding, from Sinclairs vantage point, is the most important one. This is ultimately a story about finding a repository of youthful information in old cells that can reverse aging.

Results of all three experiments are noteworthy and have commonly thought to be three separate processes, says Sinclair. That is only because the fields of aging and acute and chronic disease are distinct disciplines that rarely talk to each other.

The Harvard team is pioneering a new way to tackle diseases of aging by addressing the underlying cause. This is the first time, as far as Sinclair is aware, where nerve damage was studied in old rather than young animals. In the case of glaucoma and most diseases, aging is considered largely irrelevant, when of course we know glaucoma is a disease of aging.

A variety of aging clocks, including some the research team built themselves, have been deployed for studies because they are considered the most accurate predictor of biological age and future health, says Sinclair. As embryos, cells lay down different patterns of methylation to ensure they remember their purpose over the next 80 to 100 years.

For unknown reasons, methyl groups get predictably added and subtracted from DNA bases across cell and tissue types and even species, Sinclair says. In 2013, UCLAs Steve Horvath (another Life Biosciences cofounder) showed that machine learning could be used to pick out the hot spots and predict individual lifespan depending on how far above or below the DNA methylation line they sit (Genome Biology, DOI: 10.1186/gb-2013-14-10-r115).

A multitude of aging clocks have since been developed. Eventually, we will need some standardization in the field, but there is nothing super-mysterious about aging clocks, says Sinclair. One of my grad students could probably get you one by the end of the day.

Booming Field

Aging research is a rapidly accelerating field and epigenetic reprogramming is poised to become a particularly active area of inquiry. In terms of numbers, there are still only a dozen or so labs intensely working on this, but there are probably a hundred others I am aware of who are getting into it, says Sinclair.

Life Biosciences began with four labs, but new ones are now joining on an almost weekly basis, he adds. Collaborators have expanded work to the ear and other areas of the body beyond the eye, he adds.

Were also reducing the cost of the DNA clock test by orders of magnitude so [biological age prediction] can be done on millions of people, he continues. In the future, aging clocks are expected to be a routine test in physicians arsenal to guide patient care as well as to monitor response to cancer treatment.

Harvard University has already licensed two patents related to the technology used by the aging researchers to Life Biosciences, Sinclair says. The company has built a scientific team with a group of world-class advisors who developed gene therapy for the eye, which will be tested first for the treatment of glaucoma.

The role of chaperone-mediated autophagy in aging and age-related diseases is another promising area of research being pursued by Life Biosciences Ana Maria Cuervo, M.D, Ph.D., professor, and co-director of the Institute of Aging Studies at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Cuervo recently reported at a meeting that fasting-induced autophagy, the cells natural mechanism for removes unnecessary or dysfunctional components, can greatly extend the lifespan of mice. She believes the triggering of this process might one day help treat diseases such as macular degeneration and Alzheimers.

The specialty of Manuel Serrano, Ph.D., the fourth company cofounder, is cellular senescence and reprogramming and how they relate to degenerative diseases of the lung, kidney, and heart. He isan internationally recognized scientist who has made significant contributions to cancer and aging research and works in the Institute for Research Biomedicine in Barcelona.

DURHAM, N.C. A Duke-led team of scientists has developed a bio-compatible surgical patch that releases non-opioid painkillers directly to the site of a wound for days and then dissolves away.

The polymer patch provides a controlled release of a drug that blocks the enzyme COX-2 (cyclooxygenase-2,) which drives pain and inflammation. The study appears Jan. 10, 2021 in the Journal of Controlled Release.

When they started We were making hernia meshes and different antimicrobial films, said Matthew Becker, the Hugo L. Blomquist professor chemistry at Duke, and last author on the paper. We thought you could potentially put pain drugs or anesthetics in the film if you just sew it in as you're stitching the person up, then you wouldn't necessarily have to prescribe any opioids, Becker said.

The work grew out of a $2 million grant Becker received from the state of Ohio at his previous institution to investigate non-opioid pain management , one measure toward fighting a nationwide epidemic of opioid drug abuse. Since arriving at Duke in 2019, Beckers team has partnered with Duke pain control expert Dr. Ru-Rong Ji and his team to refine the idea.

The polymer itself, comprised of poly(ester urea) homopolymers and co-polymers, is also special, said Becker, who is also a professor of mechanical engineering and materials science in Duke's Pratt School of Engineering.

Most polymers that are used in medicine swell, and everything comes out at once, Becker said. But this polymer erodes slowly, and its painkiller dose and longevity can be controlled simply by varying the surface area and thicknesses. The film is about like a piece of paper.

If you can get four or five days of pain control out of the patch and not have to take those other pain drugs, not only do you avoid some of the side effects and risks of addiction, youre concentrating therapy where you need it, Becker said.

Rat studies also showed that the painkiller stayed in tissues close to the patch site, rather than dissolving into circulating plasma.

Becker said the patch should be able to provide three or four days of wound-pain management, which is the critical period for post-surgical pain. The implantable film would be particularly useful in endoscopic procedures and instances where the physicians and patients would like to avoid opioid exposure such as Cesarean births and pediatric surgeries. In studies with mice that mimic the neuropathic pain of diabetes, the pain patch was placed against a nerve and provided a four-day nerve block.

This research was sponsored by Merck Sharp & Dohme Corp, 21st Century Medical Technologies and the Ohio Third Frontier Opioid Challenge. Becker and co-author Natasha Brigham have filed provisional patent applications with the University of Akron Research Foundation. Americans are living 30 years longer on average and that’s a big plus for businesses – Palo Alto Online

Americans are living longer than ever before about 30 years longer, on average, than a century ago according to leading scholars who participated in the Century Summit, a four-day virtual conference convened in December by The Longevity Project and the Stanford Center on Longevity. The conference looked at everything from business innovations to caregiving to new ways for Americans to work and thrive throughout the increasingly long lives they're now living.

"Longevity is ... among the greatest opportunities we have had in human history," Psychologist Laura Carstensen, founding director of the Stanford Center on Longevity, said. "Essentially, our ancestors handed us 30 extra years of life with no strings attached. It's up to us to make sure that we use these years to improve quality of life, not just in old age but at every stage in life."

Researcher Susan Golden said adults 50 and older now represent 35% of the nation's population and account for more than 50% of consumer spending and 83% of household wealth.

That huge market of older adults is beginning to attract "A-level entrepreneurs, who could be doing anything," Robert Chess, a biotech entrepreneur and Stanford business lecturer, said.

"They're coming in and reinventing areas that have traditionally been the purview of nonprofits and mom-and-pop businesses," Chess said, citing a startup called Wider Circle focused on alleviating senior loneliness and another called Honor that specializes in the field of home health care.

Even iconic global brands with youthful images have embraced the aging customer base, making "stealth" changes to retain this group, he said.

"You think of BMW, the 'ultimate driving machine,' with 30- and 40-year-old marketing and demographics," Chess said. But the average age of a new BMW owner is actually 56.

The Bavarian auto giant redesigned its dashboard and controls with more color contrast, larger type and bigger knobs, without ever announcing it, Chess said.

"It works really well for older people, but they don't quite know why. It works well for the younger people. But (BMW) is still marketing the same way they always have. It's essentially stealth design," he said.

Similarly, Nike finding it was losing customers as they got into their 50s, 60s and 70s introduced the CruzrOne athletic shoe.

"The marketing is 'athlete forever,' so they're not marketing it toward older people, they're marketing it for cross-generation," Chess said.

"But it has features such as a flexible back heel so it's easier to get in and out of the shoe. It has more stability control; it has more padding because as your feet get older the padding gets thinner all things that are just good for everybody."

Chess said the CruzrOne was inspired by 82-year-old Nike founder Phil Knight, who walks eight miles a day.

Despite its youthful image, eyewear maker Warby Parker has found that its fastest-growing market segment is people 60 and above, Chess said. "So, they provide all the features needed (by older customers, such as progressive lenses) but still keep their young market. What you're seeing is companies that have young brands but are going where the growth is.

"They're doing it by providing product features that work for everybody but are needed by the older people."

In seeking to lead longer and healthier lives, Americans should consider emulating the nation's Latino population, David Hayes-Bautista, a professor of medicine and director of the Center for the Study of Latino Health and Culture at the Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, told participants at the conference.

Latinos in the United States enjoy longer life expectancies and lower death rates from heart disease, cancer and other causes than non-Hispanic whites, said Hayes-Bautista, citing data from the National Center for Health Statistics.

Hayes-Bautista, who's spent 40 years studying the health and culture of Latinos in the United States, said the group can be considered a model for longer, engaged lives. Latinos in the U.S. enjoy nearly 3 1/2 years of longer life expectancy 81.8 years than non-Hispanic whites, at 78.5 years, he said.

"That's surprising because they have less income as a population, less education, lower access to care, but they manage to live 3 1/2 years longer," he said.

Similarly, U.S. Latinos have 30% lower age-adjusted death rates from several leading causes of death, including heart disease and cancer, he added.

The reasons, in part, have to do with "some behaviors, which are counter-intuitive," Hayes-Bautista said. Latinos are about 30% less likely to use tobacco and alcohol and 40% less likely to use drugs, he said.

"This surprises a lot of people because the stereotype is the drunken Mexican, etc., etc.," he said. "And part of this may be due to some dedication to work."

Latinos consistently have a higher rate of labor force participation and a higher rate of household formation than non-Latinos, he said, citing data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

"We don't have to re-invent anything," Hayes-Bautista said. "If we want to increase life expectancy, lower mortality, keep people engaged and have big families, actually Latinos have been doing that ... We just need to understand and appreciate what's under our nose right here in this country."

As part of its enforcement activities, the Food and Drug Administration sends warning letters to entities under its jurisdiction. Some letters are not posted for public view until weeks or months after they are sent. Business owners have 15 days to respond to FDA warning letters. Warning letters often are not issued until a company has been given months to years to correct problems. The FDA frequently redacts parts of warning letters posted for public view.

An online eastern & holistic herbal medicine company is on notice from the FDA for claims made about their products ability to mitigate, prevent, treat, diagnose, or cure COVID-19 in people.

In a Jan. 4 warning letter, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration described a Nov. 19, and Dec. 17, 2020, review of Cocos Holistic Specialties & Apothecarys website at the internet address https://cocosholisticspecialties.org/.

The FDA observed that the companys website offers 4-Thieves Florida Tea Concentrate and 4-Thieves Florida Tea Powder for sale in the United States and that this product is marketed as being intended to mitigate, prevent, treat, diagnose, or cure COVID-19 in people.

Based on the FDAs review, these products are unapproved new drugs sold in violation of section 505(a) of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. This product is also a misbranded drug under section 502 of the FD&C Act. The introduction or delivery for introduction of these products into interstate commerce is prohibited under sections 301(a) and (d) of the FD&C Act.

Listed below are examples of the claims on the companys website that establish the intended use of their products and misleadingly represent them as safe and/or effective for the treatment or prevention of COVID-19.

The company was given 48 hours to send an email to the FDAs COVID-19 Task Force describing the specific steps they have taken to address these violations.

When Dr. Carrie Madej took the stage at the MAGA Freedom Rally D.C. on Wednesday, police sirens wailed as pro-Trump rioters stormed the Capitol. The presidents guest speaker told the crowd, a mix of QAnon supporters and far-right MAGA fans, her thoughts on the COVID vaccine: that it contains bio-sensing nanomachines designed to alter human DNA and control peoples minds.

This is not your normal flu vaccine, Madej said. This is something totally different. This is a witches brew. Ive never seen anything like this in science or medicine.

Theres many ways it can be taken up into our genome, she continued. So when this gets into the genome, if its permanent, guess what? You, as a human, can be patented and ownedlook it up!

Madej describes herself as an osteopathic doctor and a child of God and a believer in Jesus Christ. Shes also a QAnon believer who questions why COVID-19 has been a bigger story than what she describes as a global elite pedophile ring and reposts byzantine diagrams supposedly revealing Bill Gates as the mastermind behind the global pandemic.

This past summer, she was convinced that a long-debunked website advertising the Cannibal Club restaurant in Los Angeles was in fact a real eatery serving human flesh. We taste like pork, she tweeted. Dear Godhelp us change this world for the better!

To many, Madej successfully passes herself off as a medical expert, but she operates at the intersection of QAnon conspiracy theories and anti-vaxxer science, with a dollop of Christian fundamentalism and Trump-worship added to the mix. Yet the unfounded ideas she promotesthat coronavirus vaccines are part of a global effort to change the human genome and control the populationare spreading and have already had an effect. Last month, a pharmacist attempted to destroy 500 doses of Modernas COVID vaccines because he believed they were going to change peoples DNA.

This is not your normal flu vaccine. This is something totally different. This is a witches brew. Ive never seen anything like this in science or medicine.

The specter of DNA-altering vaccines didnt originate with Madej, but shes helped popularize it to the extent that its now just taken as a given in many right-wing spheres, without the need for citation or proof. While Madej has been banned from YouTube, she still has tens of thousands of followers across other social media, like Twitter, Instagram, and Parler. And thousands more heard her unfounded conspiracies on Wednesday when she spoke as a featured guest at the Freedom Rally, alongside the president and several other big names on Team Trump.

Guys, listen, that is the ulterior motive, that is one of the agendas of this: the ultimate enslavement of humanity, she said, Wake up! Wake up! Do your due diligence. Look this up. This is real.

Needless to say, the idea that a coronavirus vaccine contains spying, mind-controlling nanomachines has been debunked. They do not affect or interact with our DNA in any way, the CDC writes, in no uncertain terms, about the shots.

Madej says she started studying vaccines as a teenager, when she first came to doubt the tetanus vaccine. (She claims to be unable to find anyone who ever actually died from tetanus.) After earning her doctorate of osteopathic medicine from the Kansas City University of Medical Biosciences, she went on to practice in Georgia.

She currently lives in the Dominican Republic, she says, because its not safe for whistleblowers like her in the United Statesher long-standing skepticism about vaccines, after all, is dangerous knowledge when elites are pushing coronavirus vaccinations for their own agenda.

Madej first began sounding the alarm about supposed gene-altering vaccines in June on YouTube. The site eventually pulled her video for being misleading and blocked her account, but you can still easily find her video titled Human 2.0 Warning - Doctor Issues Wake Up Call to the World.

Wearing a labcoat and a cross around her neck, Madej appears as a talking head on a soft blue backdrop. Over the course of 20 minutes, she focuses on Modernas vaccine, which uses messenger ribonucleic acid, or mRNA, to produce an immune response in humans. Although theyve been researched for decades, COVID-19 vaccines are the first mRNA vaccines approved by the FDA.

Most people are familiar with injecting a piece of weakened or inactivated germ into the body for inoculation, like the flu vaccine. The COVID vaccines work differently: They contain a piece of the coronavirus mRNA that, once inside the body, provokes cells to produce a distinctive (but harmless) part of the virusa spike protein. The immune system, in turn, learns to defend against this protein, thereby creating antibodies that can protect from actual COVID infection.

Madej claims that process changes a recipients DNA, making them a genetically modified organism thats subject to patent law. Further, she contends, the vaccines use nanotechnologya word that simply describes extremely small tools but is often associated with tiny computers. Those tiny computers, she claims, can be used to both monitor everything happening inside our bodies and possibly remote-control our thoughts and emotions.

Although the COVID vaccines do use nanotechnology, its not computersits simply extremely small droplets that carry the mRNA into the body. Theres no massive DNA reprogramming and nanobot-insertion program designed as a part of a transhumanist push to "Human 2.0.

Nevertheless, Madejs story found an audienceand continues to. As of late July, her YouTube video had 300,000 views, according to BBC, and archives suggest her videos were still available under her name on the platform in late August, with tens of thousands of subscribers and millions of views. Even now, supporters try to sneak her videos past YouTubes safeguards.

The idea that the COVID vaccine will alter a recipient's DNA even recently led to criminal charges. Last month, Steven Brandenburg, a 46-year-old pharmacist from Grafton, Wisconsin, attempted to destroy more than 500 doses of coronavirus vaccine because he reportedly thought it could hurt people by changing their DNA," according to the detective who took his probable cause statement. Its unclear whether Brandenburg was directly exposed to Madejs content, but it doesnt matterher ideas are in the ether now, carried on the winds of right-wing social platforms and media.

Since being banned from YouTube, Madej has made her home on BitChute, where she has more than 2,000 subscribers. Shes on Parler, too, with 2,800 followers; she follows lawyer and Trump conspiracist Lin Wood, the Daily Caller, Breitbart, Ron and Rand Paul, and Bongino Report. And on Twitter, she emphasizes her medical credentials (her Twitter handle is @DrMadej and her avatar features her with a stethoscope around her neck) while encouraging her more than 26,000 followers to resist vaccination.

Our genome should not be played with like a Fisher-Price playset, she tweeted on Tuesday. Say No to being in these dangerous experiments. Say No to the Va$$i&e.

Her Instagram account with 6,500 followers is a constant feed of vaccine conspiracy theories. Alongside one meme showing The Munsters, with one normal, smiling blonde family member, is the caption, That one family member who refused the vaccine. She also once posted a screenshot of the CDCs tongue-in-cheek guide to zombie preparedness and asked with no apparent irony, Why is this on the CDC website?

Of course, Madej has chatted with Alex Jones, still the semi-tarnished king of conspiracy mongering, and he opened his interview by saluting her for her courage. Farther afield, shes appeared on the podcast of anti-vaxxer Robyn Openshaw. She joined Christian preacher Bradlee Dean, whom Popular Information calls a super-spreader of health misinformation, on Facebook Live, likely violating any number of Facebook rules while telling viewers that the coronavirus vaccine is also causing HIV. Bradlee Dean has almost 800,000 followers.

Madej is also a mutual Twitter follower of Dr. Sherri Tenpenny, the radical anti-vaxxer who has called out the impending transhumanist plot, saying Bill Gates is behind it all and is working toward blocking out the sun. Dr. Ben Tapper similarly trades on his medical authority, while telling his 15 thousand Twitter followers that the vaccine will change their DNA.

In other words, the belief in gene-altering, nanobot-spying, mind-controlling vaccines is now bigger than Madej, one of its earliest, most persuasive, and prominent proponents. And with people like her stoking paranoia, next time it might not be the Capitol thats besieged by angry MAGA-hat wearing believersbut a stockpile of life-saving vaccines instead.

Overall a strong year for bands who are still plying a trademark sound (Sodom, Vader and so on) as well as those still trying to prise a semblance of experimentation from a solid blueprint, such as Paradise Lost. I expected more from the most miserable band in the world in all honesty; they are capable of better, but theyre still around and that's a joy.

Great to see the return of Evildead with trademark Ed Repka artwork and an album that manages to reincarnate their classic sound whilst updating just a touch for 2020. Sure missed that Karlos Medina dirty bass rumble.

A great year overall for German bands. Nice to see strong returns from the likes of Accuser and Primal Fear who are always trustworthy. Is there a better example of strength in metal than Ralf Scheepers?

Specific mention to Pyogenesis, a criminally underrated band who once again have released a gorgeous, melodic and original album.

For many years, the best metal came out of Sweden which seemed to lose pace at some point. Until Dead Kosmonaut, who have been releasing truly innovative metal for several years now. Gravitas is their best work yet.

The British Lion album is so far and away the best crafted album of the year its almost embarrassing. Their debut was a little heavy going at times but The Burning is a colossus. Everything about it is perfectly delivered and after 8 years they have somehow managed to come together and produce a beautifully cohesive opus. Album of the decade.

What/Who Needs To Stop In 2021Its time for sexy female singers to go. There are far too many tattooed, skintight princess warriors out there who manage to maintain attention simply for the way they look. Isnt this to be frowned upon in the modern world? Can we go back to a simpler time where 95% of the women into metal were plain greasers, or just that tad overweight? I want to see plain women who havent attended the Guitar Institute of Technology and instead just play from the heart for the love of it.

Crowd funding campaigns for bands/artists who dont need the money. Instead the money should be raised by big name artists and then put into new labels where new signings can be paid advances like the old days.

Metal Predictions For 2021Festivals will all be cancelled leaving only smaller outdoor shows where people stand 3 miles apart from each other and listen on headphones.

Thanks to this, more bands will create online only shows. KISS is showing the way to go as they hold a special online New Years Eve show to round out this year. Expect servers to crash when big name bands play online only shows.

Metallica and Megadeth will both release new albums and tour (indoors) together.

Meshuggah will return with an experimental and slightly lighter side, with a contender for album of the year.

A year of reunions. Among them, Anthrax will realise John Bush is still the best singer they ever had and he will take over for their new album.

Xentrix will rightly reform with Chris Astley and Paul McKenzie, bringing back the classic line-up of the most underrated British metal band of all time.

ABSTRACT

A novel SARS-like coronavirus (severe acute respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus-2, SARS-CoV-2) outbreak has recently become a worldwide pandemic. Researchers from various disciplinary backgrounds (social to natural science, health and medicine, etc.) have studied different aspects of the pandemic. The current situation has revealed how the ongoing development of nanotechnology and nanomedicine can accelerate the fight against the novel viruses. A comprehensive solution to this and future pandemic outbreaks includes preventing the spread of the virus through anti-viral personal protective equipment (PPE) and anti-viral surfaces, plus efforts to encourage behavior to minimize risks. Studies of previously introduced anti-viral biomaterials and their optimization to fight against SARS-CoV-2 is the foundation of most of the recent progress. The identification of non-symptomatic patients and symptomatic patients is vital. Reviewing published research highlights the pivotal roles of nanotechnology and biomaterials in the development and efficiency of detection techniques, e.g., by applying nanotechnology and nanomedicine as part of the road map in the treatment of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients. In this review, we discuss efforts to deploy nanotechnology, biomaterials, and stem cells in each step of the fight against SARS-CoV-2, which may provide a framework for future efforts in combating global pandemics.

The results have been published today in Anesthesia and Pain Research, an international peer-reviewed journal devoted to the clinical practice of anesthesia and pain medicine. "Using Nanotechnology to Improve Pain and Function with a Novel, Drug-Free, Topical Pain-Relief Patch: An Interim Analysis," represents preliminary outcomes from PREVENT (Pain Relief: Experience and Validity: Evaluating NanoTechnology), an IRB-approved, minimal risk, observational study. After 30 days using the Kailo Pain Patch, 66 patients with mild, moderate, and severe pain and arthritic, neuropathic, or musculoskeletal pain were evaluated for changes in their pain severity, pain interference, medication usage, and for any side effects experienced.

The topline results of the study showed that the mean Brief Pain Inventory (BPI) Severity score decreased 71% (5.2 to 1.5/10P< .001) and mean BPI Interference score decreased 67% (4.5 to 1.5/10P< .001). No side effects were reported while 98% of patients reported "less" or "a lot less" usage of oral medications. 97% of patients were very/extremely satisfied with the patch and preferred the pain-relieving patch to oral medications. Results showed Quality of Life (QoL) improvements in mood, relations with other people, sleep, walking ability, and enjoyment of life.

"Modern science has allowed the incorporation of nanotechnology into topical patch systems, minimizing, and in the case of Kailo, eliminating the need for drugs/pharmacological agents. The interim results of this study are incredibly positive, and we look forward to providing the next phase of data that we have collected from patients with mild, moderate or severe pain," said Dr. Gudin.

"This interim analysis showed a marked and a significant decrease in pain severity and pain interference scores while using the Kailo Pain Patch, as well as a significant decrease in concurrent medication usage," said Hurwitz. "And due to the current and ongoing opioid crisis, and the need to identify new novel and multi-modal therapies, the outcomes provide pertinent and compelling information to share with clinicians treating patients for mild, moderate, and severe pain."

Interim results indicate that this novel, nanotechnology-formulated topical analgesic pain-relieving patch can reduce BPI pain severity and interference scores and related pain for adult patients with arthritic, neuropathic, and musculoskeletal pain.
