Python for VQuad works by connecting to the existing VQuad CLI and using a portion of the CLI commands to make simple functions. This connection to the CLI makes the library fast and responsive. Python scripts can perform a variety of Call Control and Audio operations on any device associated with the VQuad system. Additionally, access to the original CLI functions is possible through use of the VQuad library and the Python ctypes library, said Robert Bichefsky, Director of Engineering at GL Communications Inc.

He further added, Python for VQT works by connecting to the existing VQT CLI and using a portion of the CLI commands to run manual and automated VQT tests. Class variables are linked to the settings for each test and can be changed easily.

GLs VQuad in conjunction with Dual UTA HD hardware device can interface to various telecommunication endpoint devices such as cell phones, analog phones, mobile radios, VoIP phones and more. The VQuad software controls the Dual UTA HD and can place and answer calls, send audio, digits and tones, make measurements of voice quality, delay, voiceband statistics and more. Understanding Growth Through Automation: The Neoclassical Perspective – Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia

Working Paper

August 2022

WP 22-25 The fraction of national income that accrues to labor is shrinking in many countries. This paper explores how automation affects the labor share in the long run and why IT-powered automation may be shifting the balance toward capital.

We study how advancements in automation technology affect the division of aggregate income between capital and labor in the context of long-run growth. Our analysis focuses on the fundamental trade-off between the labor-displacing effect of automation and its positive productivity effect in an elementary task-based framework featuring a schedule of automation prices across tasks linked to the state of technology. We obtain general conditions for the automation technology and technical change driving automation to be labor-share displacing. We identify a unique task technology that reconciles the Kaldor facts with the presence of automation along the balanced growth path. We show that this technology aggregates to the CobbDouglas production function thus providing novel task-based microfoundations for this workhorse functional form. We employ our theory to study the connection between the recent declines in the labor share and the unique nature of the current, IT-powered wave of automation.

by

March 2021

WP 21-11 We study the effect of modern automation on firm-level labor shares using a 2018 survey of 1,618 manufacturing firms in China.

This report analyzes the risks of automation and job opportunities for different demographic groups in the U.S. and 11 metropolitan areas in the Third Federal Reserve District. The study, by Lei Ding, Elaine Leigh, and Patrick Harker, attempts to clarify some misunderstanding on how automation impacts jobs.

5 practical ways to fight recession with automation – IT Brief Australia

In the wake of COVID-19, and as the spectre of recession once again looms, its a timely reminder to review your technology and make sure youre getting ongoing value from your investment. With a bit of thought and knowledge, there are nearly always opportunities to improve on the outcomes you are currently getting from your applications and environment, and save time and money to boot.

In this article, the first of three, we suggest five specific ways you can achieve more bang for your precious buck by embracing or bettering your business processes through automation.

1. Reduce the cost of employee attraction and retention

Its commonly accepted that automation enables your employees to be more productive and accurate, and get things done more quickly, which is always great for your bottom line.

But theres also a bigger picture pay-off, and its to do with the well-documented shortage of skills and the Great Resignation.

If youve been struggling to recruit skilled resources, consider freeing up existing staff from repetitive tasks that limit their personal growth and instead, invest in upskilling them - so they can undertake more valuable (and interesting) roles. As a result, your employee retention improves, and recruitment and training costs go down. And of course, you can scale up operations without increasing your headcount, or making those impossible demands on employee time that drive people away.

Automation ideas: Streamline accounts payables, financial reporting, and data entry roles.

2. Slash the costs (and ill feeling) incurred by bad data

When it comes to data, small human mistakes can cost you dearly.

For those dedicated to data entry, it only takes a second to misplace a decimal point, record an incorrect phone number or address, or enter the wrong quantity or items in a customers order. At best, the mistake can result in an apology, at worst, some significant scrabbling to recover a damaged business relationship or even a legal battle. And of course, theres the time it takes to fix the mistake and pour oil on troubled waters.

In short, the more opportunities for human data entry that you can eliminate from your business processes by using automation to collect, process, store and share data, the less the risk and expense to your business.

Automation ideas: Remove manual data entry (and re-entry) from order taking, and financial reporting.

3. The old do more with less concept

While automation is often scarily sold as a way to replace people, we prefer to think of it as an opportunity to free them up to tackle more high-value (and interesting) tasks, or to grow the business capability without having to recruit extra employees.

Processes which involve paperwork are the perfect low hanging fruit for fast improvement. There are so many options to accurately ingest and sort incoming data without lifting a finger that its not funny. But it is exciting to realise that the time wasted asking a human to do a job that technology can do better can be eliminated. While exceptions always exist, handling them by hand may take a mere 5% of the initial task timeframe.

When talking about their successful adoption of automation to improve their accounts payable process Whakarongorau Aotearoa (formerly Homecare Medical) said: Without AP automation, we wouldve added at least another person to the accounts payable team by now. Weve taken the right strategic path. It could have been very different for us if we hadnt made this investment.

Automation ideas: Eliminate playing pass-the-paperwork, invoice approval chasing, claim or application reviewing/approval workflows, notifications for order despatches, appointments, payments, collating data from multiple systems, and more.

4. Speed up workflows that normally slow your business down

Complex workflows are inherently slow. They usually involve multiple touchpoints and approvals and reviews, and are prone to sit in unaudited to-do piles. As a result, theres always someone waiting impatiently for an outcome, whether its good news for an insurance claim, payment for an invoice, or a place at a further education facility.

Automation ideas: Accelerate multi-touch application, registration, enrolment, approval, and claim processes, as well as your entire supply chain or project services.

5. Become self-reliant

When times are tough, you have to tighten your business expenses belt where you can. So, youll want to maximise the wealth of internal capabilities of your existing administrators and developers to visualise, create, embed, manage, and refine your workflows.

The big 'however though, is that to do this, youll need an application that provides you with DIY process automation features. With a modern cloud solution, your users should have access to easy-to-understand inbuilt visual tools to create single- or multi-step workflows like estimate or quote approvals. They should also be able to apply data integrity logic to fields, including custom formulae, to ensure that data is accurate (circling back to point 2). When you can turn to your own team to streamline and automate repeatable tasks, youre already slashing your technology budget - and being master of your own efficiency efforts.

Automation ideas: Design and build your own customised make-life-easier automated processes for customers and staff using no-code, low-code, or click-not-code tools.

In summary, the judicious use of automation can help you consciously control employee costs, improve productivity, remove costly errors from the equation, speed up your rate of business and empower your people to eliminate redundant tasks. All this at a time when your bottom-line is yet again under attack.

Fusion5 focuses on helping customers do better business, so they can go from good to great. So, our next two articles will focus on practical ways to get more value out of your cloud investments, and how you can generate the sort of intelligent insights which will make a dollar-driven difference to your decision-making process.

Report: 97% of software testing pros are using automation – VentureBeat

Were you unable to attend Transform 2022? Check out all of the summit sessions in our on-demand library now! Watch here.

Is software testing getting easier or harder? Are testers making use of modern tools to accelerate product release cycles, or are they bogged down by manual processes?

To better understand the answers to these questions, Kobiton asked 150 testers in companies with at least 50 employees across a range of industries.

It turns out, software testers are relying more on automation than ever before, driven by a desire to lower testing costs and improve software quality and user experience.

For context, there are two kinds of software testing: manual and automated. Manual is still common but its not ideal for repetitive tests, leading many testers to choose automation, which can expedite development and app performance. To wit, 40% of testers responding to Kobitons study said their primary motivation for using automation is improving user experience.

MetaBeat 2022

MetaBeat will bring together thought leaders to give guidance on how metaverse technology will transform the way all industries communicate and do business on October 4 in San Francisco, CA.

In a study we conducted two years ago, half the testers we asked said their automation programs were relatively new, and 76% said they were automating fewer than 50% of all tests, said Kevin Lee, CEO of Kobiton. Nearly 100% of testers participating in this years study are using automation, which speaks to how far the industry has come.

Testing managers are prioritizing new hires with automation experience, too. Kobitons study found that automation experience is one of the three skills managers are most interested in.

And how is automation being used? A plurality (34%) of respondents to Kobitons survey said they are using automation for an equal mix of regression and new feature testing.

And its made them more efficient. Almost half (47%) of survey respondents said it takes 3-5 days for manual testing before a release, whereas automated tests can have it done in 3-6 hours.

A desire to increase automation testing was the top priority listed by testers responding to our 2022 study. Automation clearly is the wave of the future, said Lee.

Automate Your Desk With The Upsy Desky – Hackaday

It might be surprising for some, but humans actually evolved to be long-distance runners. We arent very fast comparatively, but no other animal can run for as long or as far as a human can. Sitting at a desk, on the other hand, is definitely not something that were adapted to do, so its important to take some measures to avoid many of the problems that arise for those that sit at a desk or computer most of the day. This build takes it to the extreme, not only implementing a standing desk but also a ton of automation for that desk as well.

This project is an improvement on a prior build by [TJ Horner] called the WiFi Standing Desk Controller. This new version has a catchier name, and uses an ESP32 to run the show. The enclosure is 3D printed and the control board includes USB-C and a hardware UART to interface with the controller. The real perks of this device are the automation, though. The desk can automatically lift if the user has been sitting too long, and could also automatically lift if it detects no one is home (to help keep a cat off of the desk, for example). It also includes presets for different users, and can export data to other software to help analyze sitting and standing patterns.

The controller design is open source and could be adapted to work on a wide-array of powered desks. As weve seen in the past, with the addition of a motor, even hand-crank standing desks can be upgraded. If you havent gotten into the standing desk trend yet, we hope that you are at least occasionally going for a run.

U.S. businesses expect to spend more on tech to improve productivity – TechRepublic

Those that digitized during the pandemic are seeing their earlier investments in automation pay off, according to Amexs latest Global Business Spend Indicator.

B2B spending is up for U.S. businesses with inflation rates still hovering around a record high, but two-thirds (67%) of these businesses also expect to spend more to drive productivity and efficiency through digitization, including a focus on technology, according to the latest edition of the American Express Global Business Spend Indicator.

Sixty-one percent of U.S. businesses cited inflation as the factor having the biggest negative impact on their businesses. To help offset the impact of inflation, the GBSI indicates an overwhelming majority (79%) of respondents are prioritizing access to working capital and managing cash flow.

With nearly half (48%) citing a desire to improve productivity as the main driver, 60% of U.S. businesses expect to spend more on technology, the GBSI found.

Forty-five percent of respondents said they hope to improve the quality of their products or services, while 37% said their business wants to improve the speed and effectiveness of making and receiving payments.

SEE: Hiring kit: Data scientist (TechRepublic Premium)

Nearly half (45%) of businesses that recently began using automated payments reported they have already seen an improvement in cash flow management and receiving faster payments, helping to offset the impact of inflation.

Additionally, a majority of businesses are planning to further automatespecifically, 56% want to automate payments to suppliers and 63% when looking at payments received, according to the GBSI.

Further, the GBSI found that 48% of respondents reported that the digitization of payments has already helped reduce costs, while half associate automation with more efficient payment processes.

Technology is a key area of investment for U.S. businesses focused on improving productivity which is especially important in todays macroeconomic environment, where businesses are looking for any opportunity to maximize output and remain competitive. This survey data also signals that U.S. businesses are feeling optimistic about the future of their business, and their investment in technology supports that, said Trina Dutta, vice president of B2B payments automation, global commercial services at American Express.

Even though U.S. businesses are being challenged by inflation and supply chain disruptions, the majority are keen to invest in technology, with a desire to improve business productivity being one of the main drivers of the rise in technology spending, echoed Josie Dent, managing economist at Centre for Economics and Business Research, which conducted the survey.

SEE: The COVID-19 gender gap: Why women are leaving their jobs and how to get them back to work (free PDF) (TechRepublic)

U.S. businesses are also reevaluating their supply chain with 40% reporting they are still being impacted by supply chain issues in 2022. When asked what actions theyve taken in the last six months because of supply chain challenges:

Dutta said Amex was inspired to see that despite supply chain and inflation challenges, businesses across the country remain resilient, with 71% of U.S. businesses reporting they are optimistic about the success of their business over the next 12 months.

In terms of what will be next in financial automation, Dutta said U.S. businesses are taking steps to secure their future amid macroeconomic challenges.

For example, the GBSI found that U.S. businesses that digitized during the pandemic are seeing their investments in automation pay off: 45% of businesses that recently began using automated payments are already seeing an improvement in cash flow management, receiving faster payments, and helping offset the impact of inflation, said Dutta.

When looking at payments received from business customers, the share of suppliers wishing to expand their current degree of financial automation increases to 63%, Dutta said. As businesses continue to see the benefits of financial automation, we expect to see increased use, and in turn, more innovation in the space.

RPA in a Pandemic: Driving Automation in the Post Pandemic Era! – INDIAai

The pandemic has irrevocably changed business operations. In a recent report by UIpath, "The COVID-19 Crisis Will Accelerate Enterprise Automation Plans."

The need for automation increased manifold after the pandemic, and businesses started moving with RPA.

Among the fast-growing technologies, robotic process automation can be one leading us towards a better post-pandemic world.

How? Read this blog to know more!

The ability to adapt quickly is a matter of survival for small & mid-sized businesses. During tough economic times such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the recipe for resilience is financial discipline, but it comes at a cost.

Performance and organizational agility are the two most affected areas, calling out for adaptability- this is where Robotic Process Automation steps in.

Data Source: https://flobotics.io/blog/rpa-statistics/

RPA uses software that helps businesses automate their manual and repetitive tasks. The RPA bots allow the organizations to automate simple & mundane tasks allowing the human workforce to focus on more productive tasks.

Where there are paper, manual tasks, and complex workflows, there lies an opportunity to inject RPA to automate tasks & improve business performance.

According to HfS, "If theres ever been a time we needed a digital workforce to augment humans, its now."

We understand that RPA, in a pandemic situation, cant be a nirvana solution for all our business problems. Still, it can help businesses tackle operations where processing speed has been adversely affected.

Robotic process automation can help in business continuity, resiliency, and improved customer experience.

RPA projects generate a great deal of cost savings. Businesses can enjoy immediate ROI offsetting the upfront investment of implementing just ten bots. With RPA implementation in a pandemic, enterprises can increase the quality and quantity of work products while allowing the human workforce to shift towards higher-value tasks.

The most significant advantage of RPA in pandemic and otherwise is the speed & time slash it can render by automating the mundane tasks. This was imperative during a pandemic when lost time can result in loss of life.

A drop in revenue has forced many organizations to lay off their employees during the pandemic, which rendered a big blow to productivity. By automating the daily activities of the workforce, enterprises can easily focus on activities that require human problem-solving.

When the entire world was forced into a lockdown, businesses had no choice but to shift toward a work-from-home model. Robotic process automation helped companies facilitate remote work by expediting the setup process of work from home offices.

Amid the pandemic, RPA implementation protected the staffs health by limiting exposure. For instance, bots were employed to evaluate employees current health, ad based on the survey; it helped determine if a person is at low risk or high risk.

RPA in pandemic can help businesses eliminate human error, set between 5% and 10%. Improved accuracy and quality of work are essential in high-stake tasks.

Diagnostic labs, drive-through test centers, and hospitals are burdened with diagnosing hundreds of patients each day during & after the pandemic.

As a result, there is a desperate need to speed up analyzing, looking up medical records, updating them, and sharing the documents with CDC. It has been noted that attended bots can save up to 8-9 minutes per patient by avoiding manual data management.

From Amazon to delivery services and hospitals, almost all the industries need to increase their workforce to meet the growing business demands. The solutions powered by the bot can help organizations to free up human resources to focus on more critical tasks.

Gartner predicts that by 2024, nearly half of new RPA customers will come from business buyers outside of IT organizations.

Automation is a valuable asset for ensuring agility, resiliency, and cost-effectiveness in a business environment. RPA implementation in the pandemic & post-pandemic world can help business leaders gain a foothold in a new market. After years of planning, workforce cutting & restructuring, now is the right time to invest in RPA solutions to help employees adapt to the post-pandemic world. RPA can help mitigate unexpected risks associated with manual tasks in this unpredictable market dynamic.

How to Better Train Your Automation Engineers on ISA/IEC 62443 – International Society of Automation

The Colonial Pipeline attack exposed an ongoing problem facing the nations critical infrastructure: A gap in the cybersecurity workforce. Future wars will no longer be traditional, and the country needs to be prepared on both the defensive and offensive sides, which starts by addressing this shortage. Our problem statement, then, becomes a lack of cybersecurity resources.

Due to an increase in demand for cybersecurity services, several companies including government organizations and multinational companies that provide cybersecurity consulting and implementation services started hiring candidates, which resulted in a resource crunch and a need to increase budget for hiring. Companies that didnt get the right candidate started contracting services from these consulting companies.

There are many companies and organizations which are running their cybersecurity projects with the help of third-party consulting and service support. It has escalated the economic impact and data security impact on these companies.

Every critical infrastructure industry, whether it is oil & gas, power utility, grid, food processing, manufacturing, etc., have adequate manpower for automation or engineering. They have shift engineers for operation, maintenance engineers for maintenance, and project engineers for ongoing or future projects.

The key is to train and upgrade, but how? They are already working, and cybersecurity is not their domain. ISA/IEC 62443 has provided a solution, and in this standard, there are seven functional requirements:

These seven areas are easy to train. These are technical controls, and our industrial engineers are very good at learning technical skills. If they are good at operating a complex system and monitoring critical parameters minute-by-minute to keep them within safe limits, we should trust them to take care of cybersecurity as well. Often, organizations turn to informational technology (IT) teams for cybersecurity of operational technology (OT). However, there are many benefits to training industrial engineers for OT cybersecurity, including:

A trainer or online course is the first step to providing background knowledge hands-on, which, in my opinion, is the best way to learn anything. First, we need to figure out our environment and then depending on our security requirements, we can curate courses for engineers. We can start with basic technologies, such as:

As a very high-level explanation of solutions, basic controls training can be provided to all industrial engineers that require them, so in case of emergencies they know what is expected of them and what needs to be done. Specialized training can also be provided to engineers so that a resource pool of skilled cybersecurity engineers can be further developed. This process will take some time, but this is a long-term solution. Attrition might be there in the short-term, but these processes and an increased development of a cyber-aware culture will compensate for that.

Making a Life’s Work of Death: On Hayley Campbell’s All the Living and the Dead – lareviewofbooks

HURRAY THEN FOR FUNERALS! exclaims Jean-Baptiste Clamence in Albert Camuss 1956 novel The Fall. Camus himself was a fan of funerals, according to Olivier Todd in his 1996 biography of the Nobel Prizewinning novelist. As Todd details, Camus became obsessed with American funeral customs on his trip to the United States in 1946. Hayley Campbell, also a funeral fan, reports on what we make of our dead in her new book, All the Living and the Dead: From Embalmers to Executioners, an Exploration of the People Who Have Made Death Their Lifes Work. She dives far deeper than just a survey of funeral ceremonies, choosing to interview professionals in the death industry in the United States and the United Kingdom, including a doctor who handles cadavers at the Mayo Clinic, a death-mask sculptor, a Black executioner in Virginia, and workers at the largest cryonics center in the world, among others.

Our culture has a sideways fascination with death even if most people dont want to talk about it: all those Law & Order spinoffs, murder mysteries, true crime podcasts (My Favorite Murder has 35 million downloads per month, as of 2020). Campbell engages the topic by curating stories of and interviews with workers in the death industry. Going beyond the gravedigger and the embalmer, she approaches her subjects with kindness and humor, highlighting an industry that will always be in demand. She also makes clear that by looking at death as an inevitable truth of life, we are better able to define and value life itself. Campbell shows that death workers are an essential part of everyday life, tied to many areas of civil society (e.g., the death penalty), reproductive health (e.g., bereavement midwives), and futurism (e.g., cryogenic freezing).

Campbell details the work of anatomical pathology technologist (APT) Lara-Rose Iredale, whose job is to assist pathologists in determining cause of death. Inside the mortuary of St Thomas Hospital in London, Iredale and Campbell meet for the second time, the first being the funeral industry awards ceremony at which Iredale was selected APT of the Year. She describes her job as corpse servant and has a tattoo of a tarot card on each thigh, one of DEATH and the other JUDGEMENT. In addition to assisting at autopsies, APTs deal with families when bodies are identified, liaise with funeral homes, and complete the paperwork that every death requires. Iredale also works with trainee doctors, a group Campbell writes about in a chapter covering the director of anatomical services at the Mayo Clinic. As an ATP, Iredale shows trainees the reality of a diagnosis: what telling someone they have cancer actually means, what cirrhosis of the liver looks like, what obesity means for your cramped organs, and the shocking visual fact that ribcages stay the same size no matter how big you get.

Campbell follows Iredale through an autopsy, from the cracking of the ribcage to the opening of the abdominal cavity, enduring as she scoops the loose pieces of shit from around the rectum, inside the cavity [] One nugget falls off the edge and sits precariously close to my boot for the next three hours. Far more traumatizing is her experience watching a deceased baby undergo an autopsy in a pediatric pathology department. After the investigation into cause of death is complete, the baby must be bathed, as all pathology subjects are, in a blue plastic tub. As the small body sinks into the water, Campbell feels an urge to save him even though she knows he is already dead. Though Iredale congratulates Campbell on not having to step outside at any point during her day of observation, she later has nightmares of babies lying in rows outside her bedroom window and spends the next three weeks in bed.

In the next chapter, Campbells thoughts return to infant mortality when she interviews a bereavement midwife, Clare Beesley, who delivers only dead or soon-to-be-dead babies. Beesley explains that the wing she works in has an entrance separate from the maternity ward, which is filled with the screaming associated with live births. According to Campbell, one in four pregnancies in the United Kingdom results in death either during gestation or shortly after birth. In the United States, the CDC calculates five deaths per 1,000 live births as of 2019, the most recent year data was available, but that figure seems to omit those babies who live briefly outside the mothers body, not to mention the miscarriage rate, which is not tracked. The populations of each country are quite different, however, as is their respective access to healthcare.

Beesley defines her job as look[ing] after a family when they are dealing with the most devastating moment in their lives. To help process her own grief, she creates memory boxes for the bereaved, often including photos to prove that the loss did happen, this greeting and parting all in one breath. Grieving cannot happen without the finality of seeing, [if] youre still trapped in disbelief. Beesley explains that, in the past, it was common practice to remove the dead baby from the mother without any contact or comfort, in the belief that seeing it would upset her. While this attitude is still common, with some family members requesting that the mother not have contact with the deceased infant, Beesley has years of experience and empathy for both sides: They dont want to see somebody they love in [] pain [] and they think by taking whats happened away, it takes the pain away. But it doesnt. Campbell references a 2016 study by the University of Michigan Medical School on the level of PTSD and depression in bereaved mothers. The study was unable to conclude if holding ones baby had any effect on the likelihood of depression or the higher rates of PTSD, since many reported that they were not given the opportunity to hold their child.

Campbell strikes a more lighthearted note in her chapter about a death-mask sculptor in London, Nick Reynolds, whose father was the mastermind of the Great Train Robbery. Death masks, she writes, have been the realm of kings and pharaohs, used in the making of effigies so that dead royalty could travel their land and people could pay their final respects to an imperishable leader, but they were also once an artists reference tool before the invention of photography, created of unknown dead in the hopes of one day identifying them. Campbell references Camus here as the owner of a copy of the most famous death mask in modern history, that of Resusci Anne, who became the face of the CPR training doll. Reynolds, the only person commercially working in the United Kingdom who casts faces of the dead, explains the history of the practice, including its connections to animism, the belief that through concentration one can summon the spirit of a person into an object.

Reynoldss clients are mostly widows who have commissioned their dead husbands masks. Most arent rich, despite the roughly $3,000 price tag. The masks capture a moment in time shortly after death, the culmination of a lifetime lived. As Reynolds puts it, the bereaved have managed to save a part of them that isnt going to become worm food or ashes. Often, he is called to make a mask weeks after the deceased has died, either because an autopsy was required or a drawn-out court case has left them in a mortuary freezer. Reynolds nips, tucks, smooths, and sculpts the remains into an image of what they might have looked like just after they died. The work of creating a mask involves pouring blue alginate, the same liquid used by dentists to make impressions, on the face and letting it set for 20 minutes, then filling the mold with plaster and chiseling any changes after it hardens. Finally, the mold is filled with polyurethane resin mixed with metal powder, creating multiple layers that form one incorruptible bronze face.

The books most heart-wrenching chapter follows an executioner in Virginia, Jerry Givens. Campbell takes great care to humanize Givens, a prison worker who oversaw 62 executions and investigated botched executions in states across the country. Givens explains his reasoning for choosing to do this kind of work: I prepared a guy for his next phase of life [] [M]y thing is to get you ready. How do you prepare yourself to be killed? I studied him, I talked to him, I prayed with him. Because this is his last everything. In Givenss view, death isnt the end because a higher power supersedes the power of the state.

Campbell points out that the official manner of death listed on an executed inmates death certificate is homicide. As David R. Dow, founder of Texass oldest innocence project, wrote, [T]he machinery of death cannot run without human hands to turn the dials. In 62 cases, those hands were Givenss. Rather than accept the verdict of homicide, Givens rationalized his role by equating the deaths with suicides, believing that the inmates had made choices that eventually resulted in their own execution. But he eventually lost faith in judicial accuracy when an inmate on death row was released based on DNA evidence nine days away from meeting Givens at his death chamber. Campbell notes that the death penalty in Virginia was abolished in March 2021, less than a year after Givens, who contracted COVID-19 while singing in his church choir, died.

The 12 stories of death industry professionals outlined in this book are varied and richly wrought, and that enough is reason to read them. The death machine works, Campbell writes, because each cog focuses on their one patch [] It is a series of people, connected in their industry, disconnected in their roles. She closes the book with a quote from William Gladstone, the former prime minister of England, that was framed on the wall of a workers office at Kenyon International Emergency Services, a company that conducts administrative cleanup after airplane crashes and terrorist bombings: Show me the manner in which a nation cares for its dead and I will measure with mathematical exactness, the tender mercy of its people, their respect for the law of the land and their loyalty to high ideals. Reading this book because the hidden world of death workers is fascinating is reason enough, but one may find in reading it, as I have, that attending to death deepens ones understanding of its mystery and, by extension, the mystery of life. By considering our common destination, we deepen our understanding of our common humanity.

Bitcoin Cash Loses 10% In Last 24 Hours, Despite 40% Hike In Trading Volume – NewsBTC

Bitcoin Cash had shed 24% of its value in the previous 12 days. Leading coins like Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) have also experienced double-digit losses over the past 26 days as a result of the broader market slump.

Bitcoin Cash has already shed 10% of its value in the last 24 hours. This, despite enjoying 40% increase In trading volume in the last 30 days.

Since the start of the month, the total market capitalization of cryptocurrencies has decreased by nearly 5%. The broader market slump has had an effect on Bitcoin Cash (BTC), which has a strong positive correlation with BTC.

More so, BCH increased by 40% in value over the past 30 days, trading at $145.92 as of August 15.The assessments of BCHs price changes on a daily chart also did not provide optimistic information.

Investors have steadily dropped their BCH holdings since August 19.

Meanwhile, Relative Strength Index (RSI), Money Flow Index (MFI), and Chaikin Monkey Flow (CMF) were all pushed below their respective neutral zones by the increase in coin distribution.

According to CoinMarketCap, Bitcoin Cash price is trading at $115.65 or up by 0.05% as of press time.

The RSI was seen at 40 as per the time of writing. The coin had an MFI of 39 and a CMF of -0.20. The buying pressure for the BCH coin had weakened during the previous three days.

At around $113.894348144531, Bitcoin Cash is currently trading close to its five-day low. The cryptocurrency is 3.73% higher than its five-day low of $113.89 and 14.46% lower than its five-day high.

The price of Bitcoin Cash is currently over the barrier. In the event that the rally fizzles out, Bitcoin Cash might be in a volatile position with support located at $113.2 and resistance at $117.44.

Recent Bitcoin Cash trading has been rather quiet. This indicates that todays volume is lower than the volume average for the previous seven days.

Since August 15, fewer distinct addresses have exchanged BCH currency. At the time of publication, there were 16,400 daily active addresses on the BCH network. In the past 12 days, it has decreased by more than 71%.

During the same time period, the networks transaction volume also decreased by more than 50%. BCHs transaction volume, measured in USD, dropped from $93.79 million to $9.63 million in less than 15 days.

As for mining on the network, rewards obtained by miners from transaction fees and the block subsidy since 15 August have increased by 10%, notwithstanding the decline in the price per BCH coin during the time under review.

According to the 30-day Market Value Realized Value (MVRV), the percentage of BCH investors who made money in the last month was negative (-16.58).

This statistic also recorded a negative value of -51.21 over a 365-day period. This highlighted the fact that many BCH investors have lost money since last year.

Bitcoin Cash is up by 20% from its low on 19 August, thanks to – AMBCrypto News

Bitcoin Cash [BCH] has turned out to be one of the best cryptocurrencies that one could have bought during the weekend.

Last weeks crash triggered a sell-off across the crypto spectrum. Most of the top cryptocurrencies have struggled to recover due to fears of more downside.

However, BCH has already bounced back by more than 20%.

The token climbed as high as $139 in the last 24 hours at press time. This peak represents a roughly 23% upside from its weekly low of $111.

Bitcoin Cashs robust bounce back from last weeks lows suggests that it attracted heavy accumulation.

Whale activity metrics confirmed that there was indeed a significant wave of buying activity.

The whale transaction count metrics registered an increase in whale activity, especially from 22 August.

This was around the same time that the price embarked on more upside after the extended downside on 19 August.

The increased whale activity was also backed by a substantial increase in the number of daily active addresses. Almost as if retail buyers were responding to the whale accumulation.

The metrics collectively confirm that BCH managed to command healthy demand that culminated in a noteworthy rally.

There was enough buying volume to trigger a bullish cascade as investors sought the next best opportunity after last weeks crash.

Moreover, the 30-day MVRV ratio confirmed that there was strong accumulation after 19 August.

As a result, it registered an uptick, confirming notable profitability for those who bought the recent bottom.

Just last week, Canadian regulations enforced a $30k CAD buy ceiling on non-ETH cryptocurrencies. Bitcoin Cash was among the four cryptocurrencies exempted from the rule.

The regulatory requirement may have shifted demand in favor of BCH. However, this is not necessarily the case considering that Litecoin, Bitcoin, and ETH did not enjoy a similar upside.

Well, BCHs price action in the last two months might provide a clearer answer.

Bitcoin Cash hit its 2022 bottom towards mid-June, unlike most of the top cryptocurrencies which bottomed out in mid-June.

Its price action since then appears to be forming an ascending price channel, as has been the case with most of its counterparts in the last two months.

If this turns out to be the case, then the latest bounce back is the second support retest. Hence, the trend is still strong. If that is the case, then we should see a resistance retest near the $169 price level.

Bitcoin is one of the worst cryptocurrencies claims Cyber Capital founder – Cointelegraph

Founder and chief investment officer of crypto-focused fund Cyber Capital Justin Bons have called Bitcoin (BTC) technically one of the worst cryptocurrencies, and a purely speculative asset without utility in comparison with other cryptocurrencies due to its lack of technological progress.

Bons added his two cents in an 11-part Twitter thread on Sunday, stating that Bitcoin and BTCs value proposition has long deteriorated due to a broken long-term security model, comparatively weak economic qualities and lack of capacity, programmability and composability.

Bons has been an outspoken figure in the crypto community for several years now, having established one of Europes oldest cryptocurrency funds, Cyber Capital, in 2016 and considering himself a full-time crypto researcher since 2014. In addition, Bons has run nodes on the Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash networks.

While Justin said he vigorously defended BTC in 2014, he said the reality is that BTC dramatically changed since that time, with the decision to not increase the block size limit representing a major departure from the original vision and purpose of Bitcoin:

Bons, however, doesnt appear to address the Bitcoin Lightning network, which is one of the more obvious solutions to the networks scaling problem.

Bons added that competitor networks have adopted superior token design methods, with some smart contract networks adopting fee-burning mechanisms that can trigger negative inflation rates for the token:

Without any significant technological advances or utility, Bons argues that BTC has for many people become a purely speculative asset, who continue to invest contrary to fundamental reasons of revenue, utility & use case analysis.

Bons isnt the first to use such strong language to describe Bitcoin.

In June 2022, Chair of Chinas Blockchain Service Network (BSN) Yifan He told Cointelegraph that all unregulated cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin are Ponzi schemes.

Former United States Treasurer and current Ripple Board Member Rosa Rios said last year in September that Bitcoin isnothing more than a speculative tool in comparison to other digital assets like XRP, which is primarily used to facilitate cross-border payments.

Related: What is the purpose of Bitcoin: Speculation or dollarization?

When it was originally launched in 2009, Bitcoin was designed as an electronic peer-to-peer cash system. Satoshi Nakamotos Bitcoin white paperaddressed that any speculation regarding its value as an investment is simply a by-product of its main purpose.

The narrative surrounding Bitcoin has changed over time, with the leading cryptocurrency being seen as an inflation hedge, store of value and digital gold throughout the years.

Bequia The First Bitcoin Community – Sounds and Colours

By Sounds and Colours | 29 August, 2022

Measuring just 18 square kilometers, the beautiful Bequia is the second-largest island in the Grenadines. Known to locals as the island in the clouds, Bequia (pronounced beckway) has fewer than 6,000 inhabitants and has, until now, been off-grid to most visitors to the Caribbean.

With its beautiful white sandy beaches and luscious, green-filled mountains, Bequia has welcomed the odd A-list celeb to take a dip in the deep blue sea from their anchored yacht or to drink at one of its straw beach bars.

It has also played host to royalty, with the Queen and her late husband Prince Philip visiting in 1985. Princess Margaret Beach was actually named after the royal who swam in its waters back in the 1950s. Bequia has been content to keep a low profile in comparison with its neighbor Mustique, the celebrity playground nine miles away, across the dazzling blue ocean.

A young Caribbean real estate developer, Storm Gonsalves, is looking to change the idyllic islands horizon forever. He is planning to create the worlds first Bitcoin community, where cryptocurrency will be taken as payment for everyday essentials such as buying groceries, eating out at a restaurant or even buying a ticket to see a film at the communitys cinema.

The One Bequia development will see the building of 39 luxurious villas with pools, bars, shops, restaurants and a clubhouse, with its own private gym, spa and cinema. Buyers will be able to buy the two to five-bedroom villas with a price range from $1.1m to $2.3m in digital currency or US dollars.

Locals on Bequia will continue to use the Eastern Caribbean dollar, which has Queen Elizabeth II on both its notes and coins. Goods and services will also be offered in dollars, but its hoped that crypto-friendly residents will opt to use Bitcoin, Ethereum, Dogecoin or Bitcoin Cash.

Bitcoin is a decentralized digital currency, not beholden to any government or central bank but to a network of computers (blockchain) that regulate its production and value. Bitcoin kicked off the crypto boom when it completed its first transaction in 2009.

There are over 10,000 products on the cryptocurrency list but Bitcoin remains top of the chart for value. Its a well-known fact that the five most-valued cryptocurrencies make up over 75% of all cryptocurrency value these include Bitcoin, Ethereum, Dogecoin and Bitcoin Cash.

Investors keep a close eye on the cryptocurrency prices to inform trade, however, Bitcoin seems to be a sure bet due to its consistency in holding top spot. At the time of writing, as measured by market capitalization, Bitcoin holds top position with a value above $24,000.

Ethereum sits in second place with a price of just over $1,900. Cryptocurrency prices for Dogecoin and Bitcoin Cash are lower in value but its clear to see that Bitcoin is most certainly the market leader.

The One Bequia development team, headed up by Storm Gonsalves, the son of Ralph Gonsalves, Prime Minister of St Vincent and the Grenadines, strongly deny that this is a marketing gimmick. Instead, they insist that the acceptance of cryptocurrency payments is becoming increasingly more of a necessity than a ploy.

Storm Gonsalves argues that residents of small islands find it increasingly difficult to send and receive money internationally due to de-risking by large international banks. De-risking is when large institutions remove intermediary banking services from smaller, island-based community banks.

The One Bequia development manager also stated that if this trend is to continue it will result in small island nations becoming cut-off from international trade and commerce. For tourism-based economies, this would be devastating.

It is for this reason that many Caribbean island nations are adopting blockchain and other cryptocurrencies much quicker than other more-developed nations, as a solution to the growing issues. Storm Gonsalves believes that Bermuda, the Bahamas, Barbados and now St Vincent are leading the way.

In March 2021, the Eastern Caribbean established themselves as the first digital currency union in the world, launching DCash across four island nations: Antigua and Barbuda, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Grenada, and St Lucia.

One Bequia are anticipating development of the 39 villas, bars, restaurants and the clubhouse to be completed by 2024. Villas will be equipped with the latest in smart technology and the development team believe they are an attractive investment for those accustomed to investing and speculating on the cryptocurrency markets.

Is This The Reason Dutch Authorities Arrested The Alleged Tornado Cash Developer? | Bitcoinist.com – Bitcoinist

The plot thickens. Did the supposed Tornado Cash developer arrested in The Netherlands have ties to a Russian security agency? Is a job in 2017 for a company with tenuous connections to Russia enough to justify the arrest? As Bitcoinist told you and reiterated, there had to be another reason that FIOD and the OFAC arrested a simple Tornado Cash coder. Is this one it? We dont have official confirmation yet, but it might be.

Apparently, the alleged Tornado Cash developer was Aleksey Pertsev, CEO of PepperSec and resident of The Netherlands. The information about his supposed ties to Russian intelligence comes courtesy of Kharon. The company provides data and analytic tools to optimize the core functions of financial crimes compliance programs, including KYC, screening, and investigations.

Their report states that Tornado Cash runs on software code developed by PepperSec, Inc. What and where is that company exactly?

PepperSec is a Delaware-registered corporation with its primary place of business in Seattle, Washington, according to a 2020 SEC filing. PepperSecs website describes the company as a security consulting firm of white hat hackers.

Currently, the website in question contains an About Us that says:

Were professional security engineers seasoned by many years of practical experience and deep understanding of technologies. Were ready to battle to make your project as secure as possible.

Fair enough, but

Apparently, Kharon reviewed personal and company profiles and determined that Aleksey is PepperSecs CEO. So far, so good. Wheres the smoking gun, though? Back to Kharons report:

In 2017, Pertsev was an information security specialist and developer of smart contracts for Digital Security OOO, according to an archived version of the companys website reviewed by Kharon. Digital Security OOO is a Russian entity designated by the U.S. Treasury Department in 2018 for providing material and technological support to the FSB, Russias primary security agency. Treasury alleged that, as of 2015, Digital Security worked on a project that would increase the offensive cyber capabilities of Russias intelligence services.

Thats tenuous, to say the least. And in no way related to Tornado Cash. However, a caveat is that the other two PepperSecs founders U.S.-based Roman Storm and Russia-based Roman Semenov havent been touched. So far. So, the case might be against Aleksey Pertsev alone.

For this part, well turn to quotes from notorious bitcoin enemy Fortune. The magazine interviewed Nick Grothaus, vice president of research at Kharon, who said:

You had this guy working for [Digital Security OOO] and doing pen testing himself, and then Treasury designated the company for helping the FSBs hacking capabilities.

Ok, we didnt know about the pen testing part. However, how does this relate to Tornado Cash? To answer that question the magazine resorts to Alex Zerden, an adjunct senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security, who said:

This opens up a lot of credibility issues for the developers of Tornado Cash. This is pretty profound information that informs why the U.S. government and Dutch authorities have taken certain actions.

Does it, though? There seems to be a more complex and complicated picture that takes more time to unravel, Zerden added. And we agree. Thats why the EFF asked for clarity around the Tornado Cash situation. As Bitcoinist already said, maybe the OFAC has a better case and the developer is guilty of something else. If thats the case, with clarifying information and reducing the ambiguity the OFAC would have avoided this whole situation.

The Top Privacy Coins Saw Fewer Percentage Losses Than Most Tokens This Week Privacy Bitcoin News – Bitcoin News

The privacy coins monero and zcash managed to see fewer percentage losses against the U.S. dollar this week, in contrast to crypto assets like bitcoin, ethereum, and solana. Seven-day statistics indicate zcash has lost 5.6% against the USD, while monero dropped by 6.1%.

At the time of writing, the entire market capitalization of all the privacy coins in existence is roughly $5.55 billion. Monero (XMR) leads the pack with a market valuation of around $2.64 billion or 47.5% of the entire privacy coin economy. Zcash (ZEC) is the second largest privacy coin in terms of market capitalization as ZECs overall market valuation today is $789 million.

Behind XMR and ZEC, are privacy tokens such as decred (DCR), nucypher (NU), secret (SCRT), horizen (ZEN), ergo (ERG), digibyte (DGB), and beldex (BDX), respectively. Top privacy coin double-digit gainers this week include deeponion (ONION), litecash (CASH), pivx (PIVX), and masari (MSR). The weeks top privacy coin losers in terms of percentage losses include tokens like zclassic (ZCL), lethean (LTHN), and phore (PHR).

The top five privacy coin crypto assets make up most of the $5.55 billion in privacy coin value, and each token offers different types of privacy techniques. XMR is a Cryptonote token with a blockchain protocol that was not forked from Bitcoin. XMR uses ring signatures, ring confidential transactions, stealth addresses, bulletproofs, and Dandelion++. The ZEC network can shield transactions by leveraging a zero-knowledge proof called zk-SNARKs.

Decred (DCR) utilizes a Coinjoin mixing scheme called Coinshuffle++ (CSPP) to obfuscate transactions. Nucypher (NU) deploys Proxy Re-Encryption (PRE), a technology that allows the owner of the private key to encrypt data. Similar to NU, the Secret (SCRT) blockchain provides key management techniques, Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) schemes combined with encryption to enhance privacy.

While privacy coins have taken less of a beating this week compared to ETH or BTC, they still have lost quite a bit of value during the last year. Four months ago the privacy crypto coin economy was worth a whole lot more, at $10.7 billion. XMRs overall market valuation was $4.13 billion and ZECs was $1.84 billion on April 28, 2022. Nine months ago on November 6, 2021, the privacy token economy was worth $14.9 billion.

At that time in November 2021, NU was not in the top five, as horizen (ZEN) held the fifth position in terms of privacy coins by market cap. XMRs overall market valuation was $4.69 billion. ZECs market capitalization on November 6, 2021 was slightly higher than the April 28, 2022 record with $1.94 billion. In November 2021, XMRs and ZECs market caps combined were larger than todays privacy coin economy value.
