Standard Chartered Announces New Collaboration With Universities Space Research Association on Quantum Computing – Crowdfund Insider

Standard Chartered Bank announced on Monday it and Universities Space Research Association (USRA) have signed a Collaborative Research Agreement to partner on quantum computing research and developing quantum computing applications. Standard Chartered reported that its team, led by Dr. Alexei Kondratyev, Global Head of Data Science and Innovation, and USRA have collaborated in quantum computing research since 2017.

An earlier success in investigating the quantum annealing approach to computational problems in portfolio optimisation use cases led to this strategic partnership, where USRA will continue to support fundamental academic research in quantum physics and artificial intelligence and Standard Chartered will focus on future commercial applications.

While sharing more details about the partnership, Alex Manson, Global Head of SC Ventures, which is Standard Chartereds Innovation, Fintech Investment, and Ventures Arm, stated:

The world is currently in the process of identifying commercial use cases where quantum computer capabilities will surpass classical computers. We have a conviction that some of these use cases will transform the way we manage risks in financial services, for example by simulating portfolios and exponentially speeding up the generation of market data. We will work with USRA to identify such use cases in financial services, with a view to implementing them within our bank, as well as potentially offering this service to other market participants over time.

Standard Chartered added that through the collaboration, it and USRA intend to develop this initial collaboration beyond quantum annealing to all unconventional computing systems that could provide an advantage to applications of interest, such as gate-model noisy-intermediate scale quantum (NISQ) processors and Coherent Ising machines.

As Bitcoin Struggles, This Minor Cryptocurrency Has Soared 1,000% In Just Over 12 Months – Forbes

Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies have seen a surge in popularity in recent months due to unprecedented economic stimulus measures, with some smaller cryptocurrencies seeing massive gains.

The bitcoin price, after quickly rebounding from a coronavirus-induced crash in March, has been treading water at just under $10,000 per bitcoin since May and has been on a slight downward trend over the last year.

However, other cryptocurrencies have soared, including chainlink's link tokennow up a staggering 1,000% on May last year.

The bitcoin price has struggled over the last year, even as some smaller cryptocurrencies have made ... [+] massive gains.

Chainlink, an ethereum-powered cryptocurrency that trades under the name link, has been boosted by a surge of interest in decentralized finance (DeFi)the idea that blockchain entrepreneurs can use bitcoin and crypto technology to recreate traditional financial instruments such as loans and insurance.

The chainlink price this week hit an all-time high of $6.49 per link token, according to data from bitcoin and crypto exchange Coinbase, adding 60% over the last month and taking it to touching distance of the top ten most valuable cryptocurrencies. Chainlink, designed to bridge payment services and blockchains such as bitcoin and ethereum, was created in 2015 and offered its link tokens to investors in a 2017 initial coin offering (ICO) at $0.11 per token, raising $32 million.

"We're seeing this spike as the chainlink network is getting scaled usage powering DeFi, connecting on-chain DeFi smart contracts to off-chain data feeds like commodities and crypto price data," Vance Spencer, co-founder of chainlink investor Framework Ventures, said via email.

"Firms outside of crypto are also starting to realize the power of enterprise smart contracts powered by robust oracle networks and the decision of the Chinese government to integrate chainlink oracles into their national blockchain services network is a legitimately huge deal."

Chinas Blockchain Service Network was launched on July 5 by Chinas State Information Center, China Mobile, China Unionpay, and Red Date Technologies with the aim of making blockchain development easier and uses chainlink's "oracles" to transfer data from blockchains to real-world data or a non-blockchain databases.

"Chainlinks adoption has created incredible community momentum," Spencer said, pointing to the likes of technology and banking giants Google, SWIFT, and Oracle creating partnerships and pilot programs with chainlink.

"The link rally is being driven by a multitude of factors, the most important of which is its sheer potential to unlock all the promise that smart contract platforms have so far failed to deliver on," Spencer said, adding chainlink's technology could mean "were essentially witnessing the 'Uberization' of data," referring to ride-hailing app Uber's disruption of the traditional taxi market.

"Holders of the link token will eventually have the ability to participate in the crowdsourcing process, and will earn money for doing so. For a certain class of investors, the right to provide data for smart contracts is a potentially incredible opportunity to develop steady passive income streams based on the data economy."

As the link price has climbed over recent months, other bitcoin and cryptocurrency investors have bought in, somewhat driven by fear of missing out.

"Very real possibility that chainlink will be bigger than bitcoin one day," crypto analyst Timothy Peterson of Cane Island Alternative Advisors said via Twitter this week. "The applications are enormous. I moved all my excess dollars out of Chase and into link."

The chainlink price has risen 60% over the last month, hitting a fresh all-time high and pushing it ... [+] toward the top ten most valuable cryptocurrencies. The bitcoin price has lost 2% over the same period.

Vance is confident the link price will continue to climb and has predicted link, currently worth a total of $2.2 billion, will eventually eclipse ethereum's $26 billion market capitalization.

"We believe that the winner of the smart contract platform war will eventually be worth several factors greater than ethereums current market cap," Vance said.

"If that is the case, then it is only natural that the security layer of that winner, chainlink, will also grow significantly in value. We also expect interest in chainlink to further increase once staking is introduced, as people will scramble to essentially buy the right to become a data provider for the smart contract universe."

Some other cryptocurrencies that use so-called proof-of-stake instead of bitcoin's proof-of-work model have seen their price rocket in recent months.

Tezos, which styles itself as a "self-amending cryptographic ledger" and uses the proof-of-stake consensus model, has seen the price of its XTZ token double since the beginning of 2020.

Tezos holders, if their funds are stored in certain wallets, can "stake" their XTZ and receive additional tokens as a reward for creating and verifying new blocks in the chain.

Cryptocurrency as an alternative during times of inflation – ITProPortal

We have seen investors and consumers alike deliberate about what the economy will look like post-pandemic. As the world emerges from the crisis, industries that have been shut down will be left surveying the widespread damage, some of it permanent. Consumers will likely be split between the fortunate ones that have been able to work and others whose livelihoods have been compromised as a result of the shutdown.

To mitigate the sever economic impact, governments and central banks globally are printing and distributing extra money to prop up parts of the economy which can no longer function at pre-Covid capacity levels. In the UK alone, an estimated 123bn has already been plugged into the economy and there are estimates that Bank of England stimulus levels could peak at 1 trillion.

Despite the argued necessity of these measures, it is almost impossible not to question the impact on inflation. This massive increase in governmental quantitative easing will have an impact on the global economy, and for asset prices in particular. While inflation is defined as the rate at which the average price level that particular goods and services increase over a period of time, its easier in this context to regard it as the result of a decrease in purchasing power.

As a result, investors will often look safe-haven assets that could provide a hedge against rising prices and avoid the destructive impact of inflation. Gold price is one indicator, and at the time of writing it is seeing a ten-year high while Londons FTSE 100 tumbled 2.8 per cent, and the Eurex Exchange reported a 59 per cent month-on-month decline since April volume. Historically gold had been used as a hedge to protect against economic events including inflation or currency devaluation. Although we can expect this use to continue as a popular option, the pandemic has shown a shift in consumer interest to other safe haven asset classes.

Cryptocurrency is an alternative method of inflation protection which should not be overlooked. Although previously appearing as counterintuitive due to perceived volatility, digital assets have held their own against the stock market, unlike other commodities such as oil. The value of oil has crashed due to vanishing demand and a resulting supply excess causing the price to fall to negative value.

While the comparison between gold and crypto has some nuances the broader theme of Bitcoin as a protective hedge against inflation has broken through especially after the BTC halving we saw in early May. This event has brought attention to Bitcoins controlled supply, with only 21 million max tokens being permitted. At a time when more paper currency is being created in circulation, the amount of Bitcoin halving is causing investors to look away from government-backed paper. While also highlighting the use of cryptocurrency generally as a means of exchange within a more digitally oriented world economy.

In contrast, digital assets have seen a different story. Without the worry of political interference and variable supply rates, cryptocurrencies can benefit from being a less vulnerable investment in times of crisis. We have seen that Bitcoin is still up 22 per cent from a year ago. Newer coins like Tezos are up around 30 per cent so far this year. Both digital currencies highlight that crypto volatility is potentially a sign of the past, especially when compared to the volatility in traditional asset markets.

With crypto trading operating 24/7, 365 days a year with instantaneous settlement while traditional equities still have fixed trading hours and have a settlement cycle of T+3, crypto can provide even more perceived security and flexibility for investors. Cryptocurrencies can also be used as a tool for portfolio diversification and as a method of protection against the economic and political uncertainties to come.

We have witnessed economic disruption before, across ongoing periods of hyperinflation in Venezuela and Zimbabwe more recently, and in Weimar Germany in the 1920s. While it is not helpful to draw comparisons across these countries or their respective banking systems, it is worth taking note of the value crypto offers in terms of being an alternative to unstable national currencies.

Well-known investors such as Paul Tudor Jones are buying bitcoin, saying that his fund may hold as much as a low single-digit percentage of assets in bitcoin futures a measure to protect against a rise in inflation. While Mike Novogratz stated that 2020 will and needs to be Bitcoins year, underlining further investor confidence in digital currencies. Data reinforces this view, by looking at results from the crypto asset manager Grayscale. In Q1, inflows north of $500 million, more than doubling its previous best quarter. Almost a third of this capital came from new investors and most being institutions. Almost every indication that inflationary fears shall add to the tailwinds already powering fresh investment in cryptocurrency, among them institutional involvement and improving regulation.

Bitcoin is inherently structured to encourage a deflationary approach and a relatively stable store of value acting as a true alternative to hedge against inflation, as well as the policies that precede it.

While digital assets emerged out of the embers of the 2008 financial crisis, we can only speculate what technological innovations will rise post-pandemic. Hopefully, the global economy will allow cryptocurrencies to solidify their place in future investment portfolios as it currently demonstrates strong performance and price sustainability.

We are beginning to see the early signs are already there, that investors are turning to cryptocurrencies both as a key tool for diversification and a hedge against uncertainties to come. Ultimately, we are just at the tip of the iceberg when it comes to truly understanding the vast opportunities that digital assets and blockchain for transforming the global economy and we are ready for this challenge.

Akon sets out vision for his cryptocurrency and Akon City – Decrypt

Grammy Award-nominated singer Akon outlined several potential use-cases for his upcoming cryptocurrency known as Akoin, in a talk at the Binance 'Off the Charts' virtual conference. Joined by Hollywood film producer and Akoin co-founder Jon Karas, the two discussed the current state of the Akoin project.

Akon made sweeping statements that the cryptocurrency will empower Africans and break down some of the major hurdles they face in their everyday lives such as inflation, government mismanagement of funds, and corruption.

Because many African fiat currencies suffer from rampant inflation, including the West African CFA franc used in eight African countries, he explained, it is very difficult to exchange these into other currencies. When he travelled to his home country of Senegal, he found that he was unable to exchange CFAs to Euroswhich in combination with advice from Blockchain Capital founder Brock Pierceled Akon to create his own coin.

To make it easier to exchange the tokens, they will have an internal conversion mechanism, which will allow holders to convert in and out of other cryptocurrencies, fiat currencies, and prepaid cell minuteswhich are exchanged as currency by many Africans. The Akoin wallet app will also allow users to "learn, earn, spend, and save."

Moderating the chat, Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao asked Akon whether Akoin would be accepted for his concert tickets, to which Akon replied: The concert is one of the biggest utilization tools, not only for myself but all the others on my label. [...] The whole idea is to be able to utilize crypto for everything that we're doing.

Akoin is currently expected to launch via an initial coin offering (IEO) on crypto exchange Bitfinex. Ten percent of the total supply, 45 million coins, will be sold at a rate of $0.15 each.

Technical specifications for the cryptocurrency haven't yet been released, but it will likely be based on the Stellar blockchain. Likewise, the exact launch date for the cryptocurrency is still up in the air, but the month of July was recently touted as the potential launch date.

Akon also revealed new details about his upcoming Akon City project, elaborating on plans to turn the city into a healthcare hub.

According to Akon and Karas, Akon City is being built around a 5,000-bed state of the art hospital and has a medical ship nearby. The medical facilities in the city will be run by leading doctors and like everything else in the city, can be paid for using Akoin.

Akon also hinted that both the medical staff and general inhabitants of the city will also be paid in the cryptocurrency.

"There is potential for medical tourism over time," Karas added.

To assist with bringing this vision to fruition, Akon was gifted a 2,000-acre parcel of land just outside of the Senegal capital of Dakar by the current president of the country, Macky Sall. Construction of the project began in March 2019 and could take up to 10 years to completeassuming cryptocurrency will survive that long.

Is the Future of Currency Digital? The Ongoing Trends in Cryptocurrency – CIO Applications

Blockchain technology, along with cryptocurrency, is getting significant attention from the public sector and governments of late. The coming years would witness the first real-world implementations of central bank-backed digital currencies, commonly referred to as CBDCs

Fremont, CA: The advancements in blockchain technologies and the interest of various sectors and governments in crypto development have somewhat watered down the volatility surrounding the cryptocurrency industry. The last year was indeed a good year for the industry, with the cryptocurrency market marking a three-fold growth. The constant widening of the regulatory windows in a few countries have also played a part in this growth, and surprisingly, the digital cryptocurrency bitcoin has been at the front and center of this market capitalization. 2019 also witnessed new trading solutions, groupings, and blockchain protocols emerging and maturing. According to recent reports, at least 3 million people are actively trading in cryptocurrency at any given point in time. Experts believe that the coming years will open up the adoption of cryptocurrency into new domains and spur the investment.

The gradual warming up of the governments towards cryptocurrency usage has been one of the breakthroughs for the industry. Blockchain technology, along with cryptocurrency, is getting significant attention from the public sector and governments of late. The coming years would witness the first real-world implementations of central bank-backed digital currencies, commonly referred to as CBDCs. While Venezuela had already launched their cryptocurrency in 2018, the Chinese government has recently begun a pilot program for an official digital version of its currency. The coming years could see more governments venturing into investments in cryptocurrency.

Corporates have also started launching their cryptocurrencies. For instance, Facebooks announcement of launching its blockchain digital currency Libra had taken the crypto market by storm. Several other big business organizations like Walmart, Tencent, AirAsia, J.P. Morgan, and Mitsubishi are also planning to unveil their decentralized ledgers and blockchains. Similarly, several key players in the fintech and finance sectors have already entered the crypto-space.

Governments throughout the world are drafting crypto-friendly regulatory frameworks recognizing the potential of digital currencies. Notably, the industry will also witness the increasing integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning into blockchain technology. According to experts, some other crucial upgrades are also around the corner that could ensure the privacy and scalability of the cryptocurrency network.

Huobi Global Provides Insight on What Is Driving the Institutional Interest – AiThority

Huobi, has seen aninflux of traditional and institutional traders jointheirplatform and take advantage of the Huobi Futures market place. As ofMay 6, Futures and Swap Trading Volume at Huobi topped$5.2 billion, with 24 hour perpetual swap trading volume hitting$2.2 billion this is off a product that was only launched in April.

Whatis most interesting to see is that the Institution trading percentage on Huobi futures is estimated to as high as 30 to 40 percent.

This year has been a defining one for a number of reasons. The world has faced a global pandemic, and the traditional markets and economies around the planet have had to try and deal with this unprecedented event. It has also been a year that looks set for greater interest in cryptocurrency investment.

Internally, the cryptocurrency space has been on the rise in the mainstream as regulations, governments, and traditional institutions have come to normalize and legitimize much of the space. But now, externally, there is financial uncertainty in the traditional space and many retail and institutional investors are casting their eyes to new avenues.

But, what is it that is drawing institutional interest into the cryptocurrency market other than the current internal and external factors surrounding it.Huobispoke withCiara Sun, VP of Huobi Global Markets,to find out more.

What makes the market grow?

The price volatility and high liquidity of digital assets are especially attractive to investors, explainedCiara Sun. The crypto market is unique in that it can fulfil both demands in liquidity and volatility.

For example, traditional investments like real estate have price volatilities but lack of liquidity. Foreign exchange markets have high liquidity but lack price volatility. Investors see arbitrage opportunities in crypto as an emerging market. Anabove averagerange annual return can be seen as good performance in the traditional market, but is actually a quite mediocre return in the crypto derivative market.

Clearly, the crypto market is an exciting place to be for investors. It is renowned for its high volatility, but this is a double-edged sword. For people who know how to trade well, and be safe, volatility is indicative of opportunity.

But, there is also the opportunity to use crypto to be safe and to avoid risky situations.

Additionally, digital assets can offer investors a way to hedge risk against government intervention. Traditional assets are directly influenced by monetary policies and economic measures like quantitative easing, but digital assets are decoupled from the acts of any one nation or governing body. At a time when governments around the world are printing currency to stabilize their economies, digital assets can be one way to hedge against inflation,Ciara Sunadded.

On Huobi, we have seen a 3-4X growth in institutional trading on derivative markets since early last year. Institutional clients now account for 40% of our trading volume. Our growth inRussiais especially pleasing.

Generally speaking, whether for institutional or individual traders, they want to choose a trading platform with good liquidity and market capitalization. Huobi manages 5% of crypto assets in the market and we are ranked the number 1 in liquidity by Coinmarketcap.

A reliable platform

Part of the growth in interest in the cryptocurrency space from institutional investors is also part of the growth of cryptocurrency providers. The expansion of CME and Bakkt is one side of it, but many institutions are coming to places like Huobi because of the professional platform provided.

Cryptocurrency regulation in India and its effect on the economy – Siliconindia.com

Cryptocurrency is the next big thing in the world after computers and the internet. Cryptocurrency has the potential to aid a countrys economy, however, the revolutionary technology is on halt across India from 2018. The Reserve Bank of India or RBI did impose certain restrictions on cryptocurrency that prevents cryptocurrency firms from getting any financial aid from the banking institutions. Further, this has put the vast and ever-growing cryptocurrency sector in an absolute state of oblivion. By the end of the first quarter of 2020, the Supreme Court has lifted the restrictions on cryptocurrency trading and mining in India.

India is one of the largest democratic countries in the world and four years ago we witnessed demonetization. People across the country, honest and daily wagers who had nothing to hide from the federal banks or the government had a tough time to fulfil their basic amenities such as food, water, and shelter. The inescapable truth is after the price of Bitcoin surged to $18,000, Indians could have been benefited significantly by investing in the sector. Its never too late to make some changes that would benefit the economy of a country. There is a highly likely chance that India will witness a paradigm shift in the economy now that cryptocurrency is legal in the country.

Cryptocurrency will bring a new frontier in economic growth

For a couple of years now, India did miss out on a massive opportunity to make funds with cryptocurrency with RBI deeming cryptocurrency as illegal. More than $5.5 billion is reportedly invested into numerous blockchain start-ups, worldwide. Previously, blockchain start-ups in India used to receive only 0.2% or below in terms of investment. Another Asian country, Singapore which is an early adopter of cryptocurrency did receive over $744 million in terms of capital inflows.

Cryptocurrency is providing reaping benefits to early adopters such as European countries, China, and the US. Given that the entire world is watching the next moves that China is going to put after the COVID-19 and the potential war, China and the US are racing to be leaders in both cryptocurrency and blockchain since the worldwide acclamation of the technology.

In Asia Philippines and Thailand have already kickstarted the curation of regulatory guidelines to support the local cryptocurrency trading and investment with tools like the Bitcoin Up trading robot. Additionally, both Thailand & the Philippines have already begun to develop frameworks that would boost the protection of the investor and at the same time approve licenses for numerous cryptocurrency exchanges.

Its not too late for India to establish itself as an innovative cryptocurrency and blockchain hub as the scenario is finally in the favour of cryptocurrency enthusiasts and traders. India has diversified and skilled Information Technology developers as well as entrepreneurs, who could aid the company to become a leader in cryptocurrency as well as blockchain.

RBIs Stance on Cryptocurrency

None of the governments and central banks across the world can ignore non-fiat currencies as they bring benefits of their own. In time, RBI might consider curating its own cryptocurrency that will act as a common bridge between fiat currency and cryptocurrency exchanges and transactions. The reason why RBI and other central financial bodies. Additionally, cryptocurrencies also possess several features that the conventional fiat currency doesnt and these are the primary reasons why people are in love with cryptocurrency.

Cryptocurrency and blockchain also bring comfort to the speculators as blockchain generates an enormous money supply. Technically, the central banks do not control money or the rate of inflation. Also, the money supply is governed by challenging mathematics, and this makes receiving banking ungainly as there is a need for exchanges or currency swaps.

Now that India is going through turbulence in Economy, regulating cryptocurrency is the most viable way of dealing with the great depression of the 21st Century. Sathvik Vishwanath revealed that several merchants in Bangalore still take the payment in Bitcoin. As of now, Indians can trade with both fiat currency and cryptocurrency. In no time, the craze of Bitcoin will catch on with the Indian masses.

How can cryptocurrency benefit India?

In India, people, regulators, traders, and miners will attain clarity regarding crowdfunding, ICOs, cryptocurrency, activities related to cryptocurrency and their products due to the recent judgement passed by the Supreme Court. Furthermore, people will get an overview of the legal stance of cryptocurrency across the country. The cryptocurrency industry in India can bring equitable growth as well as sustainability which in turn would promote country-wide economic development as well as stability.

RBI should take up the task to provide systematic guidelines concerning the cryptocurrency industry among the countrymen. The guidelines will instil people to gather licenses to avail services such as financial services, crypto exchanges, banking, payments & processing. If the central bank develops a sturdy framework that meets up with the proposed regulatory requirements, then cryptocurrency will witness a country-wide adaptation.

Institutions, corporations as well as ordinary people will benefit significantly if cryptocurrency becomes the mainstream medium of exchange in the country. Once cryptocurrency becomes accessible, the purchasing power of customers will also increase drastically. Several people in India do not have proper spending power, they could sincerely benefit from the ripple that cryptocurrency will bring forward.

The per capita income in the country is significantly lower, here cryptocurrency will not only enhance the standard of living rather also stimulate the creation of wealth. Retailers across the country have less exposure to trading in international markets. As cryptocurrencies equip traders with cross border payments seamlessly, retailers will finally find solace in international markets. Also, several people across the country do not own bank accounts, cryptocurrency will be a boon for the unbanked individuals.

India has finally entered the dynamic phase after the recent verdict of the Supreme Court. The reason as to why India has lifted the band is that banning unprecedented technology cannot be a long-term solution in the world of finance and trading. Now, the optimistic cryptocurrency enthusiast in me believes that the adoption will give rise to several new innovators, entrepreneurs, businesses, start-ups, products, and services, among others.

Caution urged after Northern Ireland Finance Minister Murphy calls for end to ‘rigid fiscal rules’ – Belfast Telegraph

Finance Minister Conor Murphy and his Scottish and Welsh counterparts have urged the Chancellor to hand them greater borrowing powers - a move a leading economist says should only be considered "very carefully".

longside Kate Forbes and Rebecca Evans, Mr Murphy yesterday pleaded with Rishi Sunak to end "rigid fiscal rules" and allow them to increase their borrowing levels, ahead of the Chancellor's summer statement today.

They argue that it will help regions to respond better to the Covid-19 pandemic.

All three finance ministers are calling for the freedom to switch capital funding to day-to-day revenue and put an end to arbitrary limits on borrowing.

Mr Murphy said it is "crucial" that devolved administrations are "equipped to respond swiftly and effectively to the challenges arising from Covid-19".

"More financial flexibility can help us deal with these challenges and use our budgets to support public services, protect the vulnerable, and deliver an economic recovery," he added.

Dr Esmond Birnie, a senior economist at Ulster University's Business School, said that it was important to recognise the task faced by the finance ministers in devolved administrations, as well as Mr Sunak, during the coronavirus crisis.

He said that during the course of 2020/21, total UK public borrowing - the gap between what the UK central government receives in the form of taxes and the amount spent - may be 250bn to 300bn compared to the roughly 50bn expected.

That extraordinary level of borrowing was the price paid to keep as much of the economy in cold storage ready to come back after the lockdown, said Mr Birnie. "That all said, rules relating to the behaviour of government have some value and shouldn't be torn up just because there may be some short term advantage," he added.

"In particular, rules relating to fiscal policy may have value in establishing the credibility of government in financial markets (hence, in the longer term, reducing the cost of borrowing by government).

"There may be a case to provide some short term easing of the rules relating to borrowing by the UK Government to cover the period of the virus but I think it would be reckless to throw away the rule book once we return to semi-normality."

He added that Northern Ireland has already been given around 1.3bn since March, as well as the finances for the Job Retention Scheme and income support for the self-employed.

Bold decisions, strong political will: Economic reforms are sustained, deep and pronounced under PM Modi – The Times of India Blog

Economic reforms are a matter of continuing interest in India. Only recently, marking the birth anniversary of former PM Narasimha Rao, decisions taken during his time to open the Indian economy were recalled. They were bold decisions taken under compelling circumstances. Even from 1989, the brewing balance of payments crisis was getting noticed. India had to undertake higher levels of borrowing, and correspondence with the IMF and World Bank had commenced by late 1990. Without the borrowing, India would have had to default on its external payment obligations.

The IMF pegged the release of the credit tranches to our quarterly performances based on specified criteria. The World Bank provided the structural adjustment loans linked to specified benchmarks. Their conditions were to work in tandem. India was to open its economy to be market driven and out of the licence quota raj. To dismantle the four-decade-old command and control model required immense political will, which despite running a minority government Rao had shown. After all, India had to be pulled out of a near bankruptcy.

However, several of the agreed conditions remained unfulfilled. A leadership and its vision for India adds strength to the required political will to undertake reforms which, post-Narasimha Rao, the Congress lacks. The finance minister of 1991 was the prime minister for a decade, but the Congress used its political will for itself rather than for India. Several observers called 2004-14 as Indias lost decade. It doesnt take a crisis to reform, nor should a crisis be allowed to overwhelm India.

The first NDA government (1999-2004) under Atal Bihari Vajpayee took the reforms forward. India had made commitments in 1991 on fiscal consolidation, as a part of those quarterly benchmarks to be fulfilled. However, it was PM Vajpayee who enacted the Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management law. Another promise left unfulfilled was the rationalisation of state excise rates. In 1999, PM Vajpayee cleared the idea of a single goods and services tax. However, it was in 2017 under PM Narendra Modi that the Goods and Services Act came into force.

Within a year after forming the government in 2014, PM Modi held a two-day Gyan Sangam with PSBs. He spoke about addressing the NPAs, changes to recovery laws and mergers of PSU banks. Importantly, he spoke about giving operational freedom to PSBs. Keeping in mind Indias aspirational needs, there were benefits to be drawn from expanding the size and scope of our banks. A set of mergers took place in 2017. And a leap forward happened in August 2019. Old Indias 21 PSBs, after consolidation, today stand at 12. In addition we have a payments bank in the India Post Payments Bank.

In one of the volumes on RBI history, we find an interesting observation on the 1969 nationalisation of banks: single most important economic decision taken by any government since 1947. Not even the reforms of 1991 are comparable in their consequences political, social and of course economic. Post-nationalisation, several new branches of PSBs were opened in areas that were till then uncovered. Gross domestic savings doubled as a percentage of national income in the 1970s. However, political interference in banks was rampant in the 70s. It continued unabated through phone-banking in 2008-14.

As a result, that single most important economic decision couldnt achieve either financial inclusion or steady acceleration of growth even after four decades. The PM Jan Dhan Yojana launched in 2014 has provided over 39 crore poor people access to banks and their services. Together they have over Rs 1.32 lakh crore in these accounts. Over 10 crore farmers are beneficiaries of PM Kisan Yojana, which directly transfers monies into their accounts.

Equally, market access was critical to multiplying farmers income. A major step of giving inter-state market access to all farmers was taken recently. Farmers shall no longer be compelled to sell only to licensees within their areas. Using the electronic National Agriculture Market he can seek the place and price for his product to be sold. The recent steps to energise agriculture have resulted in amending the Essential Commodities Act. Together with changes in land leasing and terms of farming, agriculture is seeing major reforms. Incidentally, removal of administrative export controls on agricultural commodities remains an unfulfilled commitment of 1991.

The Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code and setting up of the National Company Law Tribunal in 2016 provide a major relief for companies looking for an exit policy. Long pending resolutions are happening now. The Code may be on insolvency but now resolutions most often are for going concerns. Speedy disposal also ensures reasonable value realisation.

Within one year of being re-elected in 2019, NDA brought in major reforms in taxation. Corporate tax was reduced to 15% for new manufacturing companies and for the old to 22%. Options were provided for those who wished to continue benefiting from accumulated exemptions to remain in the old scheme. So was personal income tax simplified and made exemption free. Here too, option to continue in existing/ old scheme was provided. To remove any perception of harassment, tax assessment and scrutiny were made faceless. Using technology, every correspondence with the assessee has a centralised Document Identification Number.

Modi invited private players to be co-travellers in the Indian space sector. Also, to strengthen existing indigenous capacities in defence production he has invited greater investment in the sector. Reforms have continued even as the necessary stimulus is being provided for restarting the Covid-hit economy. Reforms are sustained, deep and pronounced under PM Modi.

Wyoming House candidates discuss the energy sector and diversification at Washington Park – Oil City News

David Carpenter, Kevin OHearn, Leah Juarez, Pat Sweeney, MIchael Pedry, Tom Walters, Steve Harshman, and Greg Flesvig (Oil City News)

CASPER, Wyo Candidates for contested seats in the Republican Primary for Wyomings State House of Representatives were featured at the second Politics in the Park event at the Washington Park Bandshell on Monday evening, July 13.The series is hosted every other Monday by the Republican Women of Natrona County.

Gregory Paul Flesvig is challenging House Speaker Steve Harshman, who has served 8 terms from District 37. Tom Walters has served 4 terms from District 38 and is being opposed by Michael Pedry. Patrick Sweeney, who has served 2 terms from District 58, is being opposed by Burton D. Schoenwolf, who was not in attendance. Kevin OHearn, Leah Juarez, and Dave Carpenter are running for the seat from District 59 previously held by Bunky Loucks, who is not running and who resigned his seat effective June 30, citing pressures on his business.

After introducing themselves, the candidates answered questions about their ideas for diversifying Wyomings tax base, supporting the oil and gas industry, helping businesses affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, and abolishing the death penalty.

Article continues below...

Todays tax base in the state of Wyoming is about 65% energy-related, said Walters. He added that another 20% is legacy investments in minerals. We have a recurrent $3 billion budget for the upcoming biennium, and were looking at maybe a third of that being reduced between the COVID crisis and the reduction in minerals.

We have one drilling rig working in state of Wyoming now, Harshman said. Thats the lowest I think since statehood.

To rectify the situation, Flesvig said the state needed to be a buffer between the overreach of the federal government and the oil and gas industry. We need to get out of the way of the private sector and let it do its job. Speaker Harshman said he supported a bill that would create a severance tax exemption on new oil and gas drilling when the price of oil fell below $40 per barrel. We could recoup that when we have $100-a-barrel oil.

Ohearn spoke to the point as well: We need to suck it up when its bad and give the [energy industry] a break, and incentivize them. during this bust.

Rep. Walters said that the permitting process for energy producers needed to be as expedient as possible at the state level. Juarez and Carpenter also voiced support for this position.

Unfortunately the federal government owns like 60-65% of the minerals here in Wyoming, and that is a major burden. Carpenter said. He said the the state needed to work with the Bureau of Land Management in reducing the time frame on permitting processes. Theres some leases that have been sitting idle for over ten years that are just now finally getting approved, he said.

Rep. Sweeney said improving Wyomings fiscal future would involve looking at efficiencies, reduction in staffing and programs, and yes, even [in] education, to make all of this work. But he added, We will also have to look at revenue, because we will not be able to cut our way out of this.

Rep. Walters said, We could pay 2 cents more in sales tax and still be in the middle of the road nationwide in what you pay in sales tax.

OHearn also added that a road-usage charge, which would help trafficability in Wyoming.

Attracting businesses and growing tourism were other strategies offered for diversifying Wyomings economy.

California has one of the highest tax rates in the country, and yet people are moving their businesses to California every single day, Rep. Walters said. Why is that?He added that Wyoming needed to do a better job advertising itself as a place to live, work and raise a family.

Speaker Harshman said expanding broadband connectivity was part of the answer. Flesvig agreed, and added that steep regulations were making it difficult for businesses to start. Carpenter said the intersection of I-25 and I-80 in Wyoming made it ideal for attracting manufacturing and bringing in new businesses.

The impact of statewide closures on businesses due to COVID-19 was also discussed.

Pedry said businesses themselves should decide whether to open. We call that freedom with responsibility. He said he didnt believe any business owner wanted to act recklessly with the life or health of anybody, but I also do not believe it is the role of government to decide if your business is important enough to stay open or not.

Carpenter added that reforms in tort law could help businesses operate with fewer liability concerns during the pandemic. Juarez said due to the statewide closures in March, her business went eight weeks without income. I want to make sure the next time [] something like this happens, that it doesnt affect our income and our way of life and we can still put food on our tables.

All people are essential and all businesses are essential, said OHearn. I think we need to get everyone back to work sooner than later, and that will fix 90% of it.

Candidates were asked finally what the most important lesson was that theyd learned in life.

Covid crisis biggest economic shock since World War II, but India has the tools to rebuild demand – Times Now

Sanjeev Sanyal. File image

The Covid Pandemic has caused the biggest economic shock since the great depression and second world war, but India has a plethora of tools to rebuild demand, said Sanjeev Sanyal at a panel discussion at the India Global Week. The Principal Economic Advisor in Finance Ministry also insisted that India has more ammunition, both from the fiscal front and the monetary front to alleviate the economic stress and would use them in a graded and calibrated fashion.

Lockdown & The Aftermath

Sanyal conceded that India went for a 'big' lockdown in March-end, but has gradually opened up sections of the economy from the end of April. The path of economic recovery has been a matter of elaborate discussion among experts. Sanyal asserted that the revival roadmap remained uncertain and simply throwing money at the problem may not lead to recovery. The noted economist said that Indian Government would not resort to re-inflate the economy to the pre-Covid levels because the fundamentals of the supply chains, geopolitics, technologies and consumer behaviour would be markedly different in the post-Covid world.

'Marathon, Not A Sprint'

Sanyal remarked that India from the very beginning of the Covid crisis focussed on specific ways to target demand and saw the whole situation as a marathon and not a sprint. He also differentiated India's policy measures on supply-side as well as the demand side from other countries including the likes of the US, UK and western European nations which implemented payouts to boost aggregate demand instantaneously.

Policy Making & India's Priorities

Sanyal quipped that policymaking in the aftermath of Covid is riddled with complexities due to the volatility and uncertainty about the future. He highlighted India's focus in providing a cushion to the most vulnerable sections of the society and the MSME sector. Sanyal detailed that Government intervened in multifarious ways, like using direct transfer of resources like food and money, utilising Unique Identification system to target the communities that needed the most support, 100 per cent guarantee in loans worth Rs. 3 Trillion to small industries.

More Government Support On The Way?

Defending India's approach to tackling Covid, Sanyal stressed that the country had more capability and room to use both fiscal and monetary tools contrary to opinion from several quarters. He pointed out that Indian Government still borrowed at 5.8% for 10-year papers unlike western European countries or the US as the interest rates in India remained significantly positive even at this juncture. On the fiscal front, Sanyal highlighted that India's debt to GDP is significantly lower than the rest of the world and there was still space to pump large infrastructure projects to rebuild demand as the economy opened up.

Sanyal also drew the US example of tackling the demand issue and pointed it as a proof to the view that large payouts need not provide second-order demand growth but could instead dry up the ammunition to provide help at a later stage. India has instead opted for several small packages, both monetary support from RBI and government's targetted, sector-specific measures. Sanyal hinted that more government support could arrive in the rebuild phase. India focused on freeing up agriculture, ringing in labour reforms, flexibility and emphasising privatisation and divestment in non-strategic areas to address the issue, the Principal Economic Advisor said.

2020 Another 1991?

Sanyal compared and contrasted the current situation with 1991 when India opened up its economy on the back of Balance of Payments crisis. While the country experienced a slow down now like in 1991, Sanyal highlighted the balance in macro-economy right now. Inflation remained close to zero while foreign exchange reserves stayed above half a trillion dollars of resources, asserted Sanyal while terming that the economy has stayed extremely stable on some fronts. This has opened up newer degrees of freedom on the supply side.

Turning Covid Crisis Into An Opportunity

Sanyal asserted that India remained prepared to bring in more reforms, both at the state level and the centre to turn the economic crisis into an opportunity of sorts. He also highlighted the efforts of several states which remained at the forefront of doing reforms in online and other areas.

These are all the ways you have to upload music to YouTube Music – InTallaght

Once Google has solved the problem that many users of the old Play Music had to keep their libraries on the new platform, some wonder if they can continue updating it with new content to have offline in the future. And the answer is yes since those of Mountain View continue to respect all the requirements that they already had in place with the previous app.

And we could summarize those limitations in three important points: we can only have a maximum of 100,000 songs stored in the cloud, it is only possible to enjoy this function in the event that our YouTube account is personal (and not branded) and, finally, that these uploads can only be done through the computer. Never from the official app for smartphones or tablets.

It must be said that this time, the upload process has been simplified, or rather, it is more efficient than the previous one from Play Music that it was failing a lot. While in that one an external app was necessary that we had to install on our computer (the drag and drop gave many errors), now Google has forgotten about that to manage everything through the web. Chrome preferably.

The first of the methods is that of touch on the image of our avatar and in the menu that appears in the account, choose Upload music. Then a computer window will appear so you just have to go find the location where we have stored the topics that we want to save in the cloud. In this way, it is possible to choose a few, or all the albums and songs.

The second is, as you can see just below, an old acquaintance of Google that we can also use in Photos, which is the drag and drop. You will simply have to take the folder, or folders, that you want to upload to YouTube Music to start the process. When finished, they will appear in the most recent ones, in case it is necessary to edit the artists name, album title, year of publication, cover, etc.

As always, and to avoid mistakes on the upload, keep in mind that the allowed formats are the FLAC, M4A, MP3, OGG and WMA, And that all those files will be mixed with the ones that the platform itself has in such a way that there will be occasions when what you are listening to will be the theme that YouTube Music has and not yours. Anyway, there is the possibility of accessing only the uploads, leaving aside the content that the platform has.

John Whittet dedicated to excellence in community coaching – BayToday

"The longer Ive been around the more and more I appreciate the people that have come before us that have done so much"

Rooted is all about the people and places that make us proud to call our community home.

There is no shortage of opportunities to coach at some level of athletics in North Bay. Between all the minor sports, high school level, major junior and College/University ranks, there are people who year-round are teaching and helping athletes fine-tune their craft.

Of all the coaches within the city of North Bay, only one gets recognized every year by the North Bay Sports Hall of Fame Awards Committee as the Al Brennan Memorial Trophy winner for the Coach of the year in North Bay and District.

Peter Handley, Bert Templeton, Bill Jacko and Larry Sheppard are just a few of the recognizable names that have been honoured with this award since its inception in 1977 and in 2018, long-time St. Joseph Scollard Hall Bears Coach John Whittet was bestowed with that award.

It was quite an honour, certainly wasnt expected, says Whittet.

I was happy to get it and my family was happy for me too.

Whittet says he might not have gotten into coaching in the first place had it not been for a few influential people in his life during high school.

Ive always felt everything happens for a reason, saidWhittet.

I remember in grade 10it was a combination of my dad telling me that I have to find a job that Im going to like, because it's going to be something you will spend a lot of time doing. And I had two Phys Ed teachers at Scollard, Mike Doyle and John Elkins who just seemed to be having the time of their life and that kind of all hit me as something I would really like to do. Combining sports and a good job. So, I pretty much had my mind made up then.

Whittet is most well known for his play calling as the Head Coach of the Bears football team, but thats not the only team he has had the pleasure of drawing up game plans for. In fact, it started with a community-based team.

I started coaching with the North Bay Legion Track Club when I was going to University and it didnt really stop after that point.

Whittet says after finishing with his education in teachers college at Nipissing University, he got a job in Collingwood where he taught at the elementary level for nine years.

I coached everything I could," Whittet reflected.

"It was a great way to interact with students and get to know people and then in 1999 I got hired at my alma matter at St. Joseph Scollard Hall and again, I coached whatever, and wherever they needed me to. Football, Baseball, Track and Field, Curling. And then in town, I got involved with minor hockey, and Stingers Baseball.

For those keeping count at home thats a different sport for every season; with some of those even overlapping. Dedicating that kind of time to cultivate those young athletic minds is no easy task, and once you do that for a while, Whittet says, the thought always crosses your mind, about possibly entering the professional ranks.

Whittet adds, I really like my job, I like being a teacher and coaching at the high school level. But you go to some of the clinics. We went to one in Michigan State, and York University, and one at Guelph, and you just see the level of commitment from the professionals they bring in to speak at those clinics and that in itself is amazing. Those people that coach at that level is just another step above. When you get to see what they do, its a completely different level. In my personal life though, I dont think I was ever thinking of pursuing that. Maybe as a younger person first getting into it, but I was 30 years old when I moved back home and started coaching football.

It really does show the amount of work and dedication there is at that stage. The amount of work, the amount of video, the amount of everything that they do is mind-boggling really.

But coaching at the high school level can require just as much background work, video and dedication.

Whittet says, in football, we all film our games and well share that with each other. And there are websites that you can upload the film to, and it will break down the games using analytics. So, were using that at the high school level. We could be looking at a play that is second and eight and it will calculate the probability of what kind of play the other team will do. It depends sometimes on if well have that for regular season games but come playoff time its amazing how much you will watch film and you will have your players watch film as well in preparing for that upcoming game.

Using an advanced technology system to coach minor sports might be a newer model but Whittet says he found it easy to adapt to this method because of the help he had with some of his assistants.

We had three guys that had just recently finished playing CIS football. And they will bring what they learned and teach dinosaurs like us how to structure practices on how to be more efficient, saidWhittet.

Going to clinics and conferences you also learn so much, but it was such a pleasure to have a couple of new young coaches join our staff, and really they teach you and we learn from each other. It's amazing how much people are willing to share.

Getting to teach and coach at the school he went to as a high school student is something Whittet is tremendously proud of and says it was a way to give back to a city that has a vibrant and historic sports scene.

North Bay is such a great sports city, Whittet says.

There are so many good people that are involved in it. The longer Ive been around the more and more I appreciate the people that have come before us that have done so much to start it and build it up.

Going back to my old high school was like a dream come true, he continues. Thats what I had always been inspired to do. Theres a long tradition there because its been around so long and theres been some pretty historic coaches that have come prior and you have some big shoes to fill and, obviously you cant fill them, but there are certain expectations that people hold you accountable to and if youre not doing to well you hear about it pretty quickly.

Of all the different sports Whittet has been a part of he says, I never thought I would coach curling and that was more out of necessity than due to knowledge.

But Whittet says that comes along with the territory of being available as a mentor and as a leader and doing whatever you can to help out your school and your students wherever they may need you to.

It opens up your eyes to a whole different realm. Different athletes and different people and it was awesome. And we got to host the OFSAA Curling back in 2014 which was a wonderful experience, he says.

But the gridiron is where he felt his true calling always was.

I remember watching as a five-year-old. Whether it was playing, just sitting and watching as a fan, or being a part of it in some other way, I just find it the most diverse sport you can have. People from all different walks of life can enjoy it and play it. People with different talents, different abilities and different body types can come together as one unit and finding a way to make all that work is what I truly enjoy.

Between his years as a track coach and his years as a football coach, Whittet understands how vital it is to have a state-of-the-art facility to play and practice on. Thats why one of his fondest moments as a Bear was when they were able to open Cundari Field in 2015.

Whittet says, we were just so fortunate to have the perfect storm I guess, when we were looking to upgrade some of the facilities. There was a group of gentlemen associated with the Scollard Hall Foundation and they had some money and along with the school board we all worked together to create the turf facility, the track and the bleachers that you see today.

To host events and meets and track events, it's outstanding. We welcome all the other high schools to come and train on it, and it is good for our athletics program. I really do believe there has been an uptick in student enrolment because they see this facility and they want to be a part of it and use it, and its been a real win-win for everybody.

And when people like John Whittet come along and dedicate themselves to your school and city in any area, youre going to find a lot of those win-win situations.

‘Worried for our families and all of mankind.’ Coronavirus a concern even for astronauts in space – USA TODAY

WASHINGTON At 260 miles above Earth, it might seemeasy to forget the pandemonium of a coronavirus crisis gripping the globe.

But for three U.S. astronauts Chris Cassidy, Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley circling the planet in the International Space Station, the angst of COVID-19 never really disappears either.

"Were certainly worried for our families and all of mankind," said Cassidy, commander of the orbiting lab. "It is on our mind a lot just like every citizen of the world.

"The three of us (like) most astronauts have the ability to focus on our work and compartmentalize when we need to be sharp and safe and diligent about the task at hand," he said inan interview Tuesday with USA TODAY from the space station. "But when its off duty time were quick to find the latest news from our hometowns, our families and find out whats going on ... and we hope all the best of health for everyone."

The three have been together for 37 days, ever since Behnken and Hurley made historyby docking theirSpaceX CrewDragon capsule to the ISS on May 31 following a 19-hour flight.

Their 27-foot capsule, launched on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Kennedy Space Center in Florida on May 30 at 3:22 EST, became the first spacecraft to carry humans from U.S. soil to the orbiting lab since NASA ended its Space Shuttle program in 2011 and the first private one carrying humans ever to do so.

.

For nearly a decade, NASA has relied on Moscow to ferry astronauts to the space station. Hurley praised the Russians for being "incredible" partners but called the resumption of U.S-based flights"far overdue."

"It was a tough proposition to swallow back in 2011 when the last shuttle flight flew and we had no capability from the United States to launch us into space," he said. "Its great to be back in that business again."

Plans for an early to mid-August return which will include the first splashdown of a U.S. crew in 45 years remain a working target butit's too early to pin down a specific date, Behnken told USA TODAY.

"Looking at the Gulf or off the coast of Florida in August and September, you do need to wait until you have good forecasts before you can plan too far into it, just with hurricanes, thunderstorms and the dynamics that are out there," he said. "Weve got another two weeks or so and then a good plan ought to start coming together because the weather will be better understood."

The crew is scheduled toconduct at least two more space walks to finish work that Cassidy and Benkhen started with earlier space walks to upgrade the batteries providing power to the stations solar arrays.

In between station tasks, Hurley has been in the ISS cupola, takingbreathtaking photos of his home planet and sharing them on social media.

"Personally, its trying to convey to as many people as we can just what we see with our eyes when we look out the window up here and how different it is to view the earth from space then to be standing on the Earth somewhere," he said.

Even with the ISS traveling at five miles per second and orbitingEarth about every 90 minutes, Hurleyhas little trouble recognizing the Rockies, the Himalayasor the turquoise sheen of the Caribbean.

"Every time we fly over the Bahamas, that vivid blue that you see that surrounds those islands is just unbelievable," he said.

For Hurley, the docking is familiar. In 2011, he was on the final space shuttle mission's rendezvous with the ISS, during which his teamleft behind an American flagto be retrieved by the next group of astronauts launched from U.S. soil.

Now, nearly 10 years later, he'll capture the flag he left behind.

Connecting in orbit Retired Columbus engineer works on radio power supply for space station – The Republic

A local retired engineer is helping amateur radio operators and students connect to the International Space Station.

For Ed Krome of Columbus, engineering has been a lifelong passion.

When he was 21, he built a Meyers Manx dune buggy. In 1963, he got his amateur radio license (though he prefers experimenting to chatting with other ham operators). For many years, he was the engineering manager for Master Power Transmission. In his own words, Krome holds nine patents on mechanical devices and has built everything from micro-electronics to a two-story house.

Now, the retired electrical and mechanical engineer is wrapping up work on something a little more interstellar a power supply for shortwave radio equipment on the International Space Station.

Story continues below gallery

For more than two and a half years, Krome has been a mechanical engineer and designer on a Multi-Voltage Power Supply (MVPS) that is part of an Interoperable Radio System.

On March 6, Krome, along with the rest of the power supply team, was invited to watch the first MVPSs launch into space at Cape Canaveral. The power supply was aboard the SpaceX CRS-20.

It was the clearest night ever, Krome said. And you could see everything. You know, we saw the launch, we saw the first stage cutoff, we saw the separation, we saw the booster come back down and land only about a mile from us. And it was just spectacular.

The power supply is used by an international organization known as Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS).

The organization helps young people learn about STEM and space by connecting astronauts on the International Space Station with students on the ground.

The amateur radio operators on the ground are the go-between between the signals coming down and going to the space station and the students, Krome explained.

Every year, schools can apply to host contact events, where students have about 10 minutes to talk to astronauts on the space station and ask questions. Once a school is chosen, Krome said, there is a contest where third through 10th graders submit questions to ask the astronauts. The top 10 or 12 questions will be selected and sent to the ISS in advance, in case the astronauts need to research the topic.

When the space station comes overhead, and its only visible for 10 or 12 minutes at a time, they make the contact with the space station, Krome said. And then the student who wrote the question gets to get on the microphone and ask his question to the astronaut.

Krome said these contact events often involve not just entire schools listening in, but entire communities. Last year, there were 77 contact events and more than 80,000 people were listening in, which Krome called a typical year.

There havent been any in-person contacts lately with all schools worldwide shut down, but there have been a few experiments using Zoom, he said of the project continuing during the pandemic.

Krome became involved with ARISS more than two and a half years ago.

I was recruited by the project manager (who is an old friend) who said that they needed an experienced mechanical engineer and designer and the project was only a power supply, Krome recalled. That was an understatement.

Krome said that the original mechanical design on the project was done by a professional satellite designer who left after a year and a half of working on the project.

He did the basic design and then handed it off to me and said, Here, complete it and make it work, Krome said. So my work not only included the design, but I built up an automated test arrangement to investigate the temperature and noise requirements. He also bought and assembled mechanical parts in his home before shipping them off to California for final assembly.

Krome said that the MVPS was needed to replace old equipment.

So what this power supply is, it replaces the power supplies for these transceivers, these radios, that have been on the space station, he explained. The power supplies also provide power to television-related experiments as well.

However, this equipment is more than a new power supply; its a major milestone for volunteer equipment on the ISS.

Its the first piece of equipment that has ever gone to the space station that was 100% built and managed by volunteers, Krome said. Anytime that you deal with space, there are a lot of rules and regulations, and everything is safety-related. So the documentation and the testing becomes extreme. So there are companies that actually do that kind of documentation, but you pay them to do that. Well, this one, we didnt pay anybody. We did it all with our group.

Once the power supply was built and Krome had conducted his tests, the electrical designer also had to take the unit to the NASA Johnson Space Center for rigorous testing before it could be sent to the ISS.

The new Multi-Voltage Power Supply is also unique in that it can be used anywhere on the space station.

This was not possible with any equipment for this activity before, as voltages are different on different parts of ISS (the space station), Krome said.

Krome said that hes currently finishing up work on the MVPS project, which includes building cables for a diplexer, and the group working on the project still meets for weekly teleconferences.

He also said that there are three more power supplies that are manifested to launch in the future (one will go to the American section of the ISS, the other two will go to the Russian section) and six units that are designated for training and other uses.

Were still quite involved in this, he said. And the electrical designer whos doing the final assembly. I worked with the fellow in San Diego for two and a half years, every week and sometimes more than that, and Id never met him. So I finally met him at the launch in Canaveral. The electrical designer is Kerry Banke, a retired electrical engineer.

When asked what was the best part of the project was, Krome replied, Its just exciting and interesting. Its new technology, its space-related. Its STEM, you know, its trying to get the next generation, or two generations from now, interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. You know, and in this, the current political environment, where science and mathematics are not stressed, I think that we need to do all that we can to get kids interested in this stuff, because we need good engineers and scientists and mathematicians. Thats what this is all about, is getting kids interested in it.

Where to learn more

Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) receives funding from and uses resources of the International Space Station U.S. National Laboratory. ARISS is a member of the Space Station Explorers consortium.

ARISS is a cooperative venture of international amateur radio societies and the space agencies that support the International Space Station (ISS). In the United States, sponsors are the Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation (AMSAT), the American Radio Relay League (ARRL), the International Space Station U.S. National Laboratory and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

The primary goal of ARISS is to promote exploration of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) topics by organizing scheduled contacts via amateur radio between crew members aboard the ISS and students in classrooms or public forms. Before and during these radio contacts, students, educators, parents, and communities learn about space, space technologies, and amateur radio. For more information, see http://www.ariss.org.

Information on contact events and how to host one can be found at https://www.ariss.org/submit-a-contact-proposal.html.
