Unlike the problems found in an early morning SAT booklet, you dont need to eat a good breakfast to comprehend the ones currently facing this country. Ignited by a global pandemic; a mental health crisis; and severe political, economic and social divisions not to mention everything else America has never been seen quite like this before. Scientists can scramble to concoct a vaccine that will combat the deadly new coronavirus, but it wont fix some of the other massive problems America faces, problems that, to be solved, will likely require people to actively change the way they think about the world and others living in it. Humans havent created a pill to cease violence or diminish economic inequality and probably never will. However, there is something that could help: psychedelic drugs.

Psychedelic drugs have a mechanism that could potentially change the way people fundamentally perceive their role in society in as few as six hoursand with the same effort it takes to dissolve a cough drop on your tongue.

Common psychedelic drugs used for recreational use, called classic hallucinogens, include LSD (acid), psilocybin (magical mushrooms), mescaline (peyote) and DMT (ayahuasca). Depending on the type of drug, psychedelics can either be smoked, eaten, brewed into teas or dissolved in the mouth. The effects these drugs have depend on a variety of factors, including the person using them as well as their setting and intentions.

Psychedelic drugs create bizarre sensations referred to as trips that users wouldnt experience in a normal state of consciousness or on any other drug. Reality becomes completely altered as time slows down, colors appear more vivid, nature and objects personify and poor judgement kicks in. To someone not on a trip, the state of the world would seem nonsensical.

As someone who has never done any form of recreational drug, let alone a hallucinogen that makes trees talk and turns reality into a kaleidoscope, Ive never quite understood the appeal of psychedelics. The closest thing Ive ever had to an LSD trip happened at age eleven, when my family and I went toYellowstone National Park and saw a few colorful hot springs and a family of bison crossing the road.

Ive always found it difficult to fully conceptualize what a trip on acid looks or feels like, or why people would choose to travel to a world resembling that of The Wiggles.

However, Netflixs new documentary, Have a Good Trip: Adventures in Psychedelics, does just this, explaining the intangible psychedelic trip experience to non-users. Released in May, the documentary interviews celebrities about their experimentation with psychedelic drugs, shining a light on people who you know, love and wont believe took acid, like Ben Stiller.

Not only does Have a Good Trip: Adventures in Psychedelics allow viewers to hear about wacky psychedelic trips through the narration of beloved actors and artists, it also brings their stories to life via mystical animation and campy reenactments.

One animation depicts comedian Sarah Silverman in the form of a colorful cartoon as she takes LSD for the first time, an experience that includes staring at breathing hot chocolate and hugging homeless men in a park.

Psychedelic drugs create sensations unlike anything humans have the capability of experiencing during a normal state of mind. However, the most profound thing about them is their ability to numb the ego, allowing users to feel connected to the earth and the people living on it in a way they never have before.

In the documentary Neurons to Nirvana, scientists discuss how psychedelic drugs create a deep understanding of oneself and the surrounding world, as a result of linking the lower part of the brain responsible for regulating information with its middle region. This creates an emotional interpretation based on the gathered information. The process mimics the chemical serotonin, except it overflows the brain, creating intense hallucinations, deep personal insights and the feeling of merging with the outside world.

This idea is also touched upon in The Mind, Explained, a Netflix series that unravels the complex features and abilities of the brain, which devotes a whole episode to exploring psychedelics and the impact they have on the mind. Researchers, like Dr. Roland Griffiths, say psychedelic drugs cause users to reflect inwardly, creating an effect similar to that of meditation.

Meditation is the tried and true course to investigation of nature of the mind and psychedelics is the crash course, Dr. Griffiths said. Most people will rate this experience a year afterwards as being among the most personally meaningful or spiritually significant experiences of their entire lifetime.

Spiritual awakenings resulting from psychedelic drugs have the capacity to fundamentally change the way people not only view their own life, but their contribution to the surrounding world. In Have a Good Trip: Adventures in Psychedelics, esteemed chef Anthony Bourdain credits psychedelic drugs for expanding his mindset.

I think it enabled me early on to imagine another point of view, another perspective, Bourdain said about taking psychedelic drugs. It made me a better person, both creatively and every other way.

Not only can psychedelic drugs lead to spiritual growth and understanding, but researchers have started looking into how they could be used as medical treatments for mental illness and addiction. Psychedelics like LSD have the ability to create new neural pathways, a process that could shake up a snow globe and help break cycles of depression and addiction.

A study conducted at Johns Hopkins University administered magic mushrooms to 15 people looking to quit smoking. Six months later, the experiment had a success rate of 80%, an astronomical statistic when compared to other smoking cessation drugs that are only 35% effective.

Despite the positive outlook psychedelic drugs give to the future of medical treatment, and their ability to encourage humans to live more symbiotically with the environment, one roadblock stands in the way: the law. Classified as a Schedule I drug under the Controlled Substances Act, psychedelics consist of some of the most highly regulated substances in the United States.

Due to government control, not much research on psychedelic drugs exists. Stigmatized for decades, people have claimed psychedelics fall into the realm of extremely dangerous and addictive drugs. While they can certainly be abused, no substantial evidence links psychedelics with addiction or severe long-term health effects.

Users can experience bad trips, which often include disturbing hallucinations as well as panic attacks, although these will only last for about 12 hours or until the drug wears off, and can be mitigated if in the right environment. Some cases of flashbacks or prolonged psychosis due to the use of psychedelics have been reported, but these instances are rare.

My introduction to psychedelic drugs took place in the 11th grade, when a friend asked me if I would try LSD with her. As a proud graduate of the D.A.R.E. program in elementary school, my prompt answer rolled incredulously off my tongue with a hint of judgment: No.

With the exception of Mike Pence, Im just about as strait-laced as they come, the type of person who wears pants year round even in the sweltering heat. In high school, I wrote articles about how kids should swap their vape pens for less addictive highs, like studying for biology.

In Have a Good Trip: Adventures in Psychedelics, comedian David Cross toys with the idea of widespread psychedelic use.

The first couple times I tripped, I really did believe the planet would be a better planet if everybody took acid once, Cross said.

The thought of legalizing psychedelics and allowing people to freely roam about public parks high off their minds on acid is, to me, about as heartwarming as the thought of zombies terrorizing my childhood home. Crosss idea is radical, uncomfortable and, much like the information surrounding psychedelic drugs, uncertain.

But even an avid rule follower like myself cant overlook the potential benefits these drugs could have, not just on individuals, but on society as a whole. Dont we all know someone who could benefit by having their ego knocked down a few pegs?

Recognizing the potential benefits of highly stigmatized drugs like psychedelics requires the suspension of judgment, the ability to hear a different opinion and a willingness to question a believed narrative and learn something new something that, ironically, could be catalyzed with a trip on acid.

Though, even if psychedelic drug use did become widespread, it would be ridiculous to say it could mend all of Americas problems. At least, in Have a Good Trip: Adventures in Psychedelics, famed musician Sting seems to think so.

I dont think psychedelics are the answers to the worlds problems, but they could be a start, said Sting.

A cure to violence doesnt exist because, to put it frankly, its just not that simple. In a country divided by Republicans and Democrats, those who wear masks and those who dont, I often find myself looking for the correct answer, usually out of only two possible options. But as a country, perhaps we need to start offering choices that embrace complexity and favor the in-between.

Maybe Stings assertion holds true. Maybe psychedelic drugs could be the start to finding lasting change in our country and our world. Maybe for some, this means taking psychedelics, and for others, just changing the way they think about them.

Op-Ed: USC’s reckoning with its past needs to include how anti-Semitism was allowed to flourish there – Los Angeles Times

Last month, USC President Carol Folt announced that the school would remove former university President Rufus von KleinSmids name from a campus building, citing his leadership role in the racist eugenics movement and his refusal to admit Japanese American students to the university after World War II. In explaining the decision, Folt cited Von KleinSmids actions as being at direct odds with USCs multicultural community and our mission of diversity and inclusion. What Folt did not mention was Von KleinSmids ties to Nazism and anti-Semites.

Von KleinSmid led the university from 1921 until 1947, but it was during the 1930s and early 1940s that his tolerance of anti-Semitism was most evident. We know this in part through reports sent to Leon Lewis between 1933 and 1941 from a network of spies he recruited. Beginning in August 1933, Lewis, founding executive secretary of the Anti-Defamation League, coordinated a group of men and women who went undercover and joined every Nazi and fascist group in Los Angeles. Often rising to positions of leadership, they detailed the activities of local Nazis and their supporters, including faculty and students at USC.

According to their reports, Von KleinSmid tolerated and supported pro-Nazi faculty such as Erwin Mohme, the chairman of USCs German department. Mohme, was a frequent speaker at Nazi rallies in Hindenburg Park in La Crescenta, north of Los Angeles, according to Lewis spies. He worked closely with the Friends of New Germany (predecessor of the German American Bund) and was awarded the Order of the Eagle from Los Angeles German Consul Georg Gyssling in 1938, the only Southern Californian to receive such an honor. Yet Von KleinSmid kept him in his position as head of a department.

In the summer of 1933, Von KleinSmid was part of a delegation of American university presidents who visited Germany. According to documents I obtained from Germany while researching my book Hitler in Los Angeles, the German Foreign Office was ordered to extend a warm welcome to USCs head, who had requested a personal meeting with Joseph Goebbels. The Germans believed Von KleinSmid was sympathetic to their cause even if he could not say so in public. Upon his return to the U.S. in September 1933, Von KleinSmid denounced German anti-Semitism; but he took no steps to stamp it out at USC.

The USC president also appeared on podiums with his fellow eugenics enthusiast Baron Ernst Ulrich von Buelow, who was, as I documented in my book, head of Nazi spy operations in Southern California. Von KleinSmid also, according to Lewis spies, lent a hand to Von Buelows protege, Kurt Bernhard, Prince Zur Lippe, a German undergraduate who enrolled at USC in 1933 claiming he wanted to learn more about the United States. In fact, Bernhard was a secret German agent who recruited Nazi supporters at USC. According to Lewis spies, Bernhard bragged about his good relationship with Von KleinSmid, and while on campus founded a Nazi-sympathizing fraternity and wrote for an anti-Semitic student newspaper, the Owl. He also boasted of his ability to pass out Nazi propaganda with no blowback from university administrators. In 1938, Bernhard was finally forced to register with the U.S. government as a German foreign agent.

USCs Nomenclature Task Force is currently looking at Cromwell Field, which bears the name of former USC coach and assistant Olympic track coach Dean Cromwell. During the 1936 Berlin Olympics, Cromwell prevented two Jewish runners, Marty Glickman and Sam Stoller, from competing, something Glickman and many others believed was done in order not to embarrass Hitler by having Jews on the winners podium. After the Olympics, Cromwell spoke at a Nazi-organized German Day celebration at La Crescentas Hindenburg Park, which was filled with swastika flags and storm troopers, according to a report in the American Jewish World. Anti-Nazi groups were outraged by his speech, in which he talked about how few U.S.-born people lived in New York and quipped, Oh boy, if I could only be that handsome boy Adolf [Hitler] in New York for an hour.

Cromwell also marveled that while in Berlin he did not see a single colored man, woman or children. They have all chosen to leave for some reason or other, and I for one certainly dont object to that. Following the speech, the audience gave three shouted Heil Hitlers, the Nazi salute, and a singing of the Horst Wessel song.

When newspaper reporters queried Von KleinSmid about the incident, noting how much it had disturbed the citys Jewish community, USCs leader dismissed reports of Cromwells anti-Semitism and racism as a tempest in a teapot. Cromwells remarks, he insisted, were only facetious. An unrepentant Cromwell responded that the criticism comes from a group of people [New York Jews] that raised a big slush fund to keep our team out of the Olympics.

The USC faculty were silent, but not the Los Angeles community. On September 15, 1936, 1,500 people met at the Knickerbocker Hotel to demand that USC fire Cromwell for his anti-Semitic and anti-Negro remarks. More than 100 telegrams were sent to Von KleinSmid. No action was taken.

Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, Von KleinSmid strongly supported the American war effort to defeat Germany. He built barracks for U.S. troops on campus, and in his 1942 commencement address he asked students to dedicate themselves toward all that we are and must be after victory to the end that righteousness may again reign in the world. But it was too little and too late to undo the anti-Semitic damage he had allowed to happen at USC.

I first began hearing about Von KleinSmid when I left New York to take a job at USC in January 1979. I was told by older Angelenos that Jews didnt go to USC, they went to UCLA. I asked why, and was told about the legacy of Von KleinSmid and a belief that USC was not friendly to Jews. Things have changed dramatically since then, and now President Folt has taken steps to renounce the mistakes of the past. This moment is our Call to Action, Folt wrote, a call to confront anti-Blackness and systemic racism, and unite as a diverse, equal, and inclusive university. You have asked for actions, not rhetoric, and actions, now.

A name change is a step in the right direction, but what happens after those names are changed? What happens to that ugly history? This is a rare moment of reckoning at USC and across the nation to fully air all kinds of past prejudice, including anti-Semitism, and to excise the demons of our collective past. As we have learned from history, silence is never the answer.

The city of Seattle, Washington is lecturing its white employees on the evils inherent in their paying obeisance to objectivity, individualism and the seeking of perfection in their work. The stated reason is to atone for the racism such practices have allegedly wrought through underpinning a white dominant society characterized by individual creativity and upward mobility at the expense of blacks. Lets address this policy in light of two motives behind it, the one expressed, the other a more subtle probability.

The express motive lies in the belief gone viral through the actions of Black Lives Matter that blacks are yet being exploited and relegated to a lower standard of living in the US. Implied here is the view that left to their own devices, blacks cannot rise above their station. The deficiencies in this view may be addressed with a review of two remarkable African American Educators who incorporated the three traits of objectivity, individualism and perfection to ignite success in the early twentieth century amidst a white gentry bent not only on segregation but also on eugenics and the sterilization of the African-American. These educators were Samuel W. Houston of Huntsville and David Abner Jr of Conroe.

Both Houston and Abner were leaders of African American Christian colleges in their respective domains. Each of them realized the link of objectivity, individualism and the seeking of perfection to igniting a sense of creativity and enterprise. Theirs was the path marked by Thomas Jefferson himself as he opined that intelligence linked to Christian-backed virtue was the key to securing the unalienable rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness enshrined in his authorship of the Declaration of Independence.

Houston and Abner each rejected the eugenics refrain of their time which was accommodated to an extent even by the prominent black leaders of the day, W.E. B. Dubois, Kelly Miller, and in his own way, Booker T. Washington. Houston even attended colleges associated with each of these black leaders: Hampton Institute with Booker T. Washington, Atlanta University with Dubois and Howard University with Kelly Miller; Houston also had personal friendships with all of them. Houston later gained both state and national fame stemming from the high caliber of students produced in his Sam Houston Institute in the environs of Huntsville. Samuel W. Houston, however, gave most credit not to the views of his African American mentors, but to Christianity for igniting a mode of upward mobility in his students.

Like Samuel W. Houston, David Abner Jr. took the reigns of Conroe Normal and Industrial College in Conroe and maneuvered it to heights in its golden years, setting the stage for eventually employing six extensions extending all the way to San Francisco. Like Houston, David Abner Jr. instilled the twin pillars of intelligence and virtue in his students giving them the skills and fortitude for successful lives.

David Abner Jr and Samuel W. Houston, then, demonstrated that blacks could rise on their own, without the thinly veiled racism inherent in Seattles drive to shame the whites into lowering themselves to accommodate them.

Which brings us to the more subtle motive probably endemic to the Seattle project, an embrace of the Malthusian policy of the worlds global elite as indicated recently at the World Economic Forum at Davos, Switzerland. This is the view that man, like the animals, is limited in his creative abilities. Given this premise, many globalists seek to reduce the expectations of world progress to a realistic level via de- legitimizing objectivity, individualism and perfection. Letter: Black abortion rate boosts the death toll – Grand Forks Herald

In May, Herald columnist Chuck Haga made an appeal: I hope there will be a new respect for science, facts and truth. Agreed. Lets start with the denial of a basic, inalienable right, from which all other rights flow.

CNN aired a June segment that ran afoul of approved pro-abortion talking points and phraseology within corporate news media. They called an unborn baby an unborn baby void of partisan euphemisms. It passed muster because it served the Black Lives Matter insurgency.

The guest was Ebony Chisholm, who had written an op-ed titled A Letter to My Beautiful, Black Unborn Baby in the Hartford Courant. Chisholm read the 750-word piece on air, describing the development of her baby based on medical science shedding light on the humanity of the unborn to an audience that probably rarely gets that perspective.

Im now in the beginning stages of my second trimester. During this time of pregnancy is when youre beginning to move your arms and legs, you have all your fingers and toes, your facial features are becoming more defined and my stomach is starting to become more noticeable. Your Dad and I should be thinking about who you will look like more, when will we feel you kick for the first time.

Any Black child in the womb has a far greater chance of being aborted than murdered by racists. Black babies are aborted at more than three times the rate of white babies. In 2014, 259,336 black lives were snuffed out before they could breathe thats more than the top 15 leading causes of deaths among African Americans combined.

Making up 13% of the population, 40% of the nations abortions are committed on African Americans. What percentage of the dead were female? The bulk of that killing occurs at Planned Parenthood facilities, founded by racist and eugenicist Margaret Sanger, who advocated the selective breeding of the finest flowers to prevent human weeds. Her 1939 Negro Project reflects that perspective.

Bostons Art Commission voted unanimously to remove the citys copy of a statue depicting a formerly enslaved man at the feet of the great emancipator Abraham Lincoln, while a statue of Sanger remains undisturbed in that city. Apparently, an image of Lincoln and emancipation and a freed slave is traumatic, while Sangers appalling racism and the killing of millions of Black babies isnt.

Liberal Democrats, conservatives know youre rooting against the country, wishing the economy crashes with President Donald Trump getting the blame and losing in November.

They have tried everything to get him out of office, all with lies and distortion. Here are some questions and facts.

Are you proud of President Barack Obama, who directed the spying of Americans, including Trump, while trying to undermine a national election? Are you proud the former president represented the most corrupt administration in American history? Are you proud he orchestrated a silent coup along with James Comey,John Brennan, Peter Strzok, Hillary Clinton and others to overthrow Trump?

Are you proud of killing full-term babies and selling human body parts, making billions for an evil organization originally founded on using eugenics to purify the population?

Democrats evidently applaud this because most of them support it financially and verbally.

Even Jesse Jackson said in 1977, What happens ... to the moral fabric of a nation that accepts the aborting of the life of a baby without a pang of conscience?

Are you proud of their anti-police platform? When are the Democrat leaders like Joe Biden going to condemn this fascist anarchy lawlessness? Where are we going to live: in a country of law and order or a liberal lawless society run by mobs and thugs?

Biden has trouble putting coherent sentences together. Hes been in government for five decades and has accomplished nothing. Hes camped out in his basement listening to advisors who fear his gaffes and constant stammering. And he wants to be president. Liberal Democrats the only thing you should fear on Nov. 3 is the truth.

If You Cant Stop People From Voting, Just Help Them Die? – Common Dreams

First, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp, when formerly serving of Secretary of State, did everything he could to keep hundreds of thousands of Black and Hispanic voters in Georgia from having their votes counted or even being able to vote at all.

In the months running up to his own race for governor, he conducted massive purges of the voting rolls, closed polling places in Black and Hispanic neighborhoods, and refused to certify the recent voter registrations of about 50,000 African Americans.

Now it appears hes decided that if he can't prevent Black and Hispanic people from voting he should just help them die.

Kemp, like the entire nation, learned on April 7, when the New York Times and the Washington Post both ran front page stories about it, that Black and Hispanic people were dying at disproportionate rates from Covid-19.

No doubt purely by coincidence, that was also the week that everyone from right wing talk show hosts to major rightwing influencing groups to the Trump administration all pivoted from concern and caution about the coronavirus to the message, "It's time to open America back up and do it now!"

Trump tweeted "Liberate!" And white guys with guns and Nazi and Confederate flags showed up in state capitols to demand that all those disproportionately minority front-line workers get back to work.

It was as if the racists across the country, and Steven Miller and Donald Trump in the White House, figured out that if they wanted to actually reduce America's Black and Hispanic population, this was their chance. They could use this virus to, "Make America white again."

Call it the "Republican Party's 21st Century Eugenics" program?

Doubling down on this apparent strategy, yesterday Gov. Kemp officially banned cities in Georgia from enforcing their own face mask requirements.

Georgia cities with large Black and Hispanic populations like Savannah and Atlanta had passed mask ordinances and their mayors were trying to enforce them.

But Kempbacked by Trump's political muscle and authorityjust put an end to all that.

As Georgia's hospitals are reaching capacity and the virus is ripping through communities of people who can't easily telecommute or work from home, the governor is taking an official step that could dramatically increase infection and death rates among low income and minority people across the state.

It's hard to imagine that elected public officialseven those who won with the help of fraud like Kemp and Trumpwould be so craven as to engage in policies that specifically target minority groups for illness and death.

There has to be another explanation, right?

I just can't figure out what it is.

Private Companies Are Powering the Future of Aerospace – The WasteWatcher

American aerospace has long been dominated by a handful of entrenched firms, enabled by institutional biases and preferentially written contracts. The end result has too often been inflated prices and a lack of innovation. Fortunately, vast private sector investment has begun to change the status quo.

While the push for competition in space seems relatively new, the idea has been around at least since the 1984 Presidents Private Sector Survey on Cost Control under President Reagan, better known as the Grace Commission. The commissions recommendations included an increase in private participation in the commercial uses of space and a shift in responsibility to private industry for launch vehicles. Since then, the cost overruns and delays in programs managed by legacy contractors have helped to open the door for greater competition in the space launch market.

The commercial space industry reached several critical milestones in 2020. On April 30, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) announced that three private companies Blue Origin, Dynetics, and SpaceX were selected to design and develop lunar landing systems for the agencys Artemis program. In addition, on May 30, SpaceX successfully launched American astronauts from U.S. soil for the first time since the retirement of the Space Shuttle in 2011. NASA had previously been relying on the Russian Soyuz program to deliver astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS). At $55 million per astronaut, SpaceX costs 36 percent less than the $86 million charged by Russia.

NASA has awarded contracts to convey astronauts to the ISS over the next decade to SpaceX and Boeing, which has long dominated the space launch industry. According to a November 14, 2019 NASA Office of Inspector General (OIG) report, NASA will pay Boeing $90 million per astronaut for a ride to the ISS, or $4 million more than it was paying to Russia.

Beyond providing savings, SpaceX has proven more reliable. During its December 20, 2019 maiden launch to the ISS, Boeings unmanned Starliner crew capsule was unable to dock. On February 6, 2020, a NASA safety review panel found that Boeing averted a catastrophic failure unrelated to its failure to dock. On April 6, 2020, Boeing stated that it would rerun the test flight prior to transporting astronauts. One month earlier, SpaceX successfully completed its 20th ISS resupply mission.

SpaceX has become a major player in the National Security Space Launch program (NSSL), which carry satellites into orbit for the countrys security agencies. However, it was initially blocked from bidding, and only an April 2014 lawsuit opened up the competition. The company is one of four being considered in the next round of NSSL launch contracts, with two winners set to split 34 launches over five years. Joining SpaceX in the competition are Blue Origin, Northrop Grumman, and United Launch Alliance, a joint venture between Boeing and Lockheed Martin.

The lunar lander competition was not only noteworthy for its award to three private companies, but also because NASA eliminated Boeing from consideration. Out of the three firms chosen for the 10-month selection process, Blue Origin received a majority of the initial funding. Remarkably, the entirety of Blue Origins development costs thus far have been covered privately.

While Boeing is not going to build the lunar lander, the company is responsible for developing the Space Launch System, the rocket that will transport the lander and crew to the Moon. Unfortunately, a March 10, 2020 NASA OIG report found costs could balloon from the initial estimate of $35 billion to more than $50 billion as a result of a litany of technical problems. Making matters worse, Boeing has a cost-plus contract, meaning taxpayers are responsible for additional expenses.

The main argument for the old guard of aerospace had long been reliability, but this no longer holds water. The successes of SpaceX and the inclusion of new entrants in NSSL contracts and lunar lander development are positive signs for the future of U.S. spaceflight. Unlike agreements with legacy contractors, where the government paid a significant portion of development costs, these companies should be allowed to maintain control over their intellectual property.

Additional steps should be taken to remove remaining barriers to entry in all future contracts in order to achieve maximum cost savings and performance. In this new era of U.S. aerospace, the stars are the limit, and the savings could be astronomical, as long as the federal government continues to let the private sector thrive and innovate.

DfAM takes aerospace to new heights – 3DPMN

When you talk about additive manufacturing in the aerospace industry, it is impossible not to discuss design. Design is one of if not the most important driving factors behind AMs benefits in the development of aerospace parts. Design is what enables innovation in lightweighting and gains in performance efficiency. In a word, design is critical.

Considering this, we felt it important to not only consider AM in aerospace from the hardware and aerospace sides, but also from the perspective of engineering design software we should note here that here our definition of design also encompasses simulation and manufacturing analysis. To shed some light onto the power of engineering design for aerospace applications, we spoke to Ryan OHara, the Technical Director of Aerospace and Defense at nTopology Inc.

nTopology will be a familiar name to many in the industry, as it is one of the leading engineering software companies specializing in design for additive manufacturing (DfAM). In 2019, the New York-based company launched nTop Platform, a complete engineering workflow that is offered through an annual subscription mode.

Modern design engineering ecosystems are continually trying to pull more information forward in the process in an effort to enable engineers to make use of downstream knowledge early in the design process, OHara explained. This is especially important in advanced manufacturing applications, where the downstream manufacturing process can have a significant impact on design decisions from the onset of the design process.

nTop Platform provides a common foundation so that engineers across a number of disciplines including design, simulation and manufacturing can capture their own piece of the process, send it upstream (or downstream) and leverage that of others at any point. Additionally, various pieces of workflow knowledge can be configured into a larger process or application on top of the platform, providing a top-level design engineering environment that captures the work, skill and engineering know-how of each design team member.

From a design perspective, nTop Platform enables users to generate AM-optimized geometries through its AM Toolkit, which combines topology optimization algorithms and field-driven design technology. In practice, this means that parts can be designed to only have material where it is needed, while still meeting performance specifications and manufacturing limitations (i.e. overhang angles, wall thicknesses, etc).

OHara states: The three key drivers that set nTopology apart from other software vendors are: unbreakable modeling technology that allows for lightning-fast iterations and unlimited geometric complexity; field driven design that uses geometry, simulation and manufacturing fields to drive geometric design to optimize the part; and the ability to create workflows that can be reused, shared, remixed and automated.

nTop Platform has provided a combination of workflows that directly facilitate DfAM process steps. These include workflows for lightweighting, architected materials and direct export of slice data to certain build processes. nTop Platform also allows users to deploy their own workflows within a company. In one instance, an experienced AM manufacturing engineer was able to leverage nTop Platform to configure a workflow that could be used as a time and cost estimator and shared with a team of design engineers. As such, the design engineers could see in near real-time the effects of their design decisions on the downstream AM processes.

nTop Platform is easily integrated with existing CAD, CAE and CAM platforms, to facilitate seamless workflows for its clients. nTop Platform embraces the most useful aspects of CAD, CAE, CAM and topology optimization, and it integrates with all modern engineering systems, OHara says. It also adds a new layer of control and governance for reliable, consistent and validated results without the need for human involvement at every step.

Today, more than 30% of nTopologys clients are from the aerospace industry, and the companys nTop Platform is in use at some of the worlds largest aerospace firms to assist in the development of new and innovative parts. The platforms appeal comes in large part from its design capabilities, as well as its efficient workflow.

In todays design environment, engineers are tasked with having to produce higher performing parts with a given design volume, OHara explains. They are asked to do this on shorter and shorter design cycles, all while making their components lighter.

Looking specifically at the benefits of nTop Platform and additive manufacturing in aerospace, OHara identifies three key areas: the maximization of part performance, the consolidation of design and the production of lighter parts.

nTop Platform and AM fundamentally enable three specific areas for the aerospace industry, he elaborates. First, the ability to maximize part performance in a way that was not previously possible with traditional design and manufacturing methods by allowing for the generation and fabrication of complex shapes that have direct effects on the fundamental function of the component. Second, consolidation of design: by decreasing the number of sub-components and making the parts multi-functional it allows for fewer components, reduced assembly time and more reliable systems. Third, aerospace components can be improved by using geometry that uses material more efficiently through optimization algorithms, periodic structures and field-driven design methods to produce lighter parts.

Compared to other engineering software solutions, nTop Platform stands out in a critical way. That is, while most modeling environments are built to document an engineering solution, nTop Platform actually creates one. nTopology integrates mathematics and simulation to create a single environment without geometry bottlenecks, OHara says. nTop Platform allows engineers to fully utilize their computers to understand and solve hard problems.

Anytime the barriers to design and subsequent manufacturing can be removed, there will always be a benefit to the designer, manufacturer and, ultimately, the end-user. nTopologys fundamental goal is to allow engineers to be able to generate geometry without limitations. When these parts can be quickly and easily realized in the physical space, huge opportunities become available for all those individuals involved in the design process.

In the aerospace sector, there are a vast number of parts that can be designed, redesigned and optimized using AM, from engine components to interior cabin structures. According to OHara, however, one of the part groups that will benefit the most from additive manufacturing is heat exchangers.

Far and away the biggest limitation to air and space components is the mitigation and handling of heat, he explains. Heat from a turbine engine, electronic device or working fluid often needs to be transported in a way that ensures the critical engineering process that the heat comes from can be maintained. Heat exchangers are fundamental to these processes and require complex internal geometries to be effective. nTopology and AM are able to deliver huge gains in performance by increasing surface and decreasing wall thickness to enable the exchange of heat in ways that are simply not possible with traditional design and manufacturing processes.

In one example, nTopologys software was used in combination with ANSYS CFX to redesign a Fuel Cooled Oil Cooler (FCOC). The report, which can be read in full here, details the process from initial redesign in CAD, to process steps in nTop Platform and to final Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and analysis steps in ANSYS CFX.

The part in question is a high-performance heat exchanger (HEX) used in the aerospace industry, which exchanges heat between the engine oil and the fuel of an aircraft. The design was inspired by a project led by America Makes aimed at leveraging AM to redesign a legacy shell and tube HEX to determine whether advanced design and manufacturing could increase performance.

In this case, nTop Platform enabled engineers to define a volume for the part which could act as a basis for the modified FCOC design, maximizing surface area while minimizing mass in its interior walls. The surface area of the part was maximized using a Triply Periodic Minimal Surface (TPMS), also known as gyroid structure. By implementing this structure in the heat exchanger design, the team achieved a 146% increase in surface area compared to traditional tube and shell HEX of the same size.

When coupled with advanced manufacturing methods, these TPMS structures enable parts with both high strength and heat dissipative requirements to be designed in a manner that was previously impossible to achieve, says OHara.

The wall thickness of the component was minimized thanks in large part to the use of a nano-functionalized high-strength 7000 series aluminum alloy (7A77), which was developed specifically for AM. The superior strength of the metal enabled thinner interior walls in the part without sacrificing strength or performance. In fact, the gyroid structure has walls about half the thickness of those made from traditional casting-grade aluminum alloys for AM. Overall, the increased surface area and minimized wall thickness of the FCOC resulted in a 300% increase in heat transfer compared to the legacy component.

All this was achieved using nTop Platform with the support of ANSYS CFX capabilities, which provided computational fluid dynamics simulation to evaluate the performance of the redesigned FCOC. The software company concludes: nTop Platform allows the user to create complex geometries (TPMS structures, fluid volumes, smooth lattice-solid transitions), while maintaining complex control over the geometric model, and then easily allows the user to export the geometry outside of nTop Platform for validation and verification.

It is becoming increasingly apparent that additive manufacturing is unlocking new application opportunities in the aerospace industry, through the production of more efficient and often higher performing parts. As weve seen, additive manufacturing systems are not unlocking these capabilities on their own: sophisticated software programs such as nTop Platform are really at the core of these benefits and allow AMs potential to be fully exploited.

Commercial aerospace has experienced a drastic decrease in demand for passenger travel and changing customer behaviors with the recent distancing restrictions, which could result in a higher demand for narrow-body aircraft. The impact of COVID-19 has also affected the commercial aerospace manufacturing supply chain, particularly for mid-to-lower-tier suppliers.

Deloitte has reported that the defense sector has remained stable and military projects have held strategic priority as the federal government continues to strengthen the defense industrial base (DIB).

The company noted that while the defense sectors rate of growth may decrease in 2020, companies were largely insulated from large-scale disruption by steady defense budgets and beneficial policy decisions by the Department of Defense (DoD). While the sector has experienced temporary disruptions to defense supply chains, delays are expected to be minor.

In addition, M&A activity is expected to decrease as companies focus on liquidity as opposed to expansion. Deloittes report noted that companies are likely to become cautious within M&A. New policies that have restricted foreign investment in key components of the defense industrial base (DIB) could prevent international M&A deals in the near term.

To combat the challenges the COVID-19 pandemic has posed, Deloitte stated that digital technologies were identified as the most important factor to combat fallout. These technologies will enhance productivity, efficiency and workplace safety.

Advanced technologies are expected to drive survival and recovery of companies and enable them to better position themselves by accelerating the adoption of advanced robotics and automation, which will make the manufacturing process more efficient as companies operate with reduced workforces.
