Freedom School gave area students a voice on issues this summer – The Daily Progress

For five weeks, nearly 70 area elementary school students gathered virtually to read books and learn about civic engagement as part of the University of Virginias first Freedom School.

The free summer program from the Curry School of Education and Human Development was part of an initiative from the Childrens Defense Fund, which created the model for Freedom Schools that includes culturally responsive teaching materials. UVas program is the third such school in Virginia and one of 181 nationwide, according to the defense fund.

The last week of the Freedom School gave students a chance to show off posters made for the Childrens Defense Fund National Day of Social Action. The posters, displayed at their homes, focused on what the students think is important. Many talked about Black Lives Matter, encouraging adults to vote for Black rights. Other posters asked adults to vote for COVID to go away and others supported votes in favor of animal rights and cartoons.

Even if theyre not old enough to vote, they can still have a voice within whats happening, said Johari Harris, an assistant research professor and project director of the Charlottesville Freedom School. They are still very much a part of this movement.

The Freedom School model, which is rooted in the 1964 Mississippi Freedom Summer project, was well-suited to help students incorporate current events, such as the pandemic and protests, into their oral history projects.

[CDF is] very much focused on social movements and empowering students to be like civic actors in their local, state and national community, Harris said, adding that the curriculum also emphasizes cultures and narratives that have been traditionally marginalized.

The UVa team, like other programs this year, had to switch to a virtual model because of the pandemic. Harris said going virtual allowed them to open up more slots for interested students. About 70 students from Charlottesville and Albemarle County schools started the program.

During the five weeks, the students, whom the program refers to as scholars, went on virtual field trips to Monticello and to the Civil Rights Trail and worked on oral history projects. Each morning of the session focused on literacy skills through a live online program. Classes started at 9:30 a.m. daily.

In the afternoons, the scholars had one-on-one sessions with their teachers for tutoring and relationship-building. There also were optional movie nights.

Harris said Charlottesville and Albemarle schools provided the technology and hotspots, if needed, for students. They also had a bi-weekly pickup of materials where families could get school supplies, T-shirts and books.

The Curry School's Center for Race and Public Education in the South partnered with Charlottesville City Schools to bring the program to the area.

Given the events in of August 2017, our colleagues in the center and members of the Charlottesville community thought a Freedom School could serve as a concrete way for the university and local community to collaborate on a project serving children, Derrick Alridge, a UVa professor and director of the center, said in a news release. Grounded in ideals of freedom and social justice, we believe a Freedom School could help bring about healing in Charlottesville and show our collective commitment to advancing civil rights and social justice in our time.

Charlottesville teacher Christen Edwards oversaw the day-to-day operations as the site coordinator.

Harris credited Edwards, the program staff, their partners and the students parents for helping to make the first Freedom School successful.

When there were technology issues, they were working through it, being patient with us and helping their children kind of engage with us, Harris said.

The Freedom School was open to any student in third through fifth grade, and UVa students helped to teach the different sessions.

Its been pretty incredible, Harris said. Speaking as project director, I was a little nervous. It was virtual programming in the middle of a pandemic.

The Risk of Too Many Freedom of Navigation Operations – The Diplomat

For the second time since June, a U.S. Navy guided-missile destroyer conducted a freedom of navigation operation (FONOP) in the Caribbean Sea off thecoast of Venezuela last Wednesday. For the first time in three decades, U.S. warships in May conducted FONOPs in the Barents Sea near Russias northern coast. And with increasing regularity, U.S. Navy warships press the envelope of challenging Chinese maritime claims with FONOPs as close as 12 nautical miles from Chinese-claimed territory.

Before a mistake or miscalculation results in an armed clash involving a U.S. naval vessel which could draw the United States into a serious conflict we need to examine the utility of aggressive FONOPs.

The ultimate purpose for any military operation away from U.S. shores ought to be the security and prosperity of the country. Any operation or action contributing to that objective should be given serious consideration, but anything that has an unacceptable chance of harming U.S. interests should be rejected. FONOPs, as currently practiced, are increasing the chances the United States will one day stumble into a war.

Given the expansion in the number of FONOPs against China, the increase in such operations targeting Russia, and the now-expanding operations into South America, the assumption would be that multiple navies are threatening U.S. freedom on the seas. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Civilian maritime traffic worldwide is shared online to give a real-time update of where global trade is taking place on the seas. You dont have to be an expert to look at thelive mapat any time to see that there are no gaps near Russia, China, or Venezuela that would signal the need for a muscular American naval response. No one is threatening to block traffic.

To the contrary, China and Russia especially are highly dependent on international trade andneedsea traffic to continue unimpeded; they would be the first to lose should either engage in shutting down traffic on the seas.

Like any military organization, it is a necessity to exercise the U.S. Navy to maintain proficiency in its core warfighting skills. They need to be ready, on a moments notice, to defend the United States global interests, to repulse any attack, and to viciously punish any who dare strike us. This level of proficiency allows the U.S. to effectively deter any attack but also provides the muscle to defeat any opponent if deterrence fails.

To maintain this level of deterrence and war-winning capacity, the U.S. Navy needs to conduct regular, prudent global patrols and exercises to maintain warfighting proficiency. Doing so will ensure security and economic freedom for U.S. companies and business interests without unnecessarily provoking adversaries to take action against our interests.

One doesnt have to be an apologist for any foreign power to recognize that continual patrols with powerful warships close to their shores is going to precipitate a response. If the Chinese navy were to challenge U.S. supremacy in the Pacific and Atlantic oceans by building naval bases near the U.S. coast and regularly sailing within 12 miles of U.S. shores, Washington would not passively acknowledge their rights of transiting international waters.

Perhaps more critically, Washington should encourage friendly regional states and allies to enhance their own security via anti-access, area denial (A2/AD) self-defense capabilities. China has become an expert at A2/AD technologiesand has made any attack on its territory or forces to be an expensive and deadly prospect.

The best way the United States can accomplish its objectives in the Asia-Pacific region is to encourage allies and other friendly states to invest much more heavily in their own A2/AD capabilities that would deter China from attempting to take any of them by military force. Doing so places the responsibility for self-defense more heavily on each country where it belongs and less on asking the U.S. Navy and Air Force to underwrite regional security for states that can afford to invest more in their own defense needs.

FONOPs have a place in Americas tool chest, but only if used sparingly and wisely. Relying too heavily on such operations disincentivizes allied and friendly countries from investing in their own defense, placing an unnecessary burden on U.S. forces and increases the risk the United States may one day be sucked into a war it should never have fought.

When Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence, he included in it a list of the colonists grievances with the British government. Notably absent were any complaints that the British government infringed upon the freedom of speech.

In those days, speech was as acerbic as it is today. If words were aimed at Parliament, all words were lawful. If they were aimed directly and personally at the king as Jeffersons were in the Declaration they constituted treason.

Needless to say, Jefferson and the 55 others who signed the Declaration would all have been hanged for treasonous speech had the British prevailed.

Of course, the colonists won the war, and, six years afterward, the 13 states ratified the Constitution. Two years after ratification, the Constitution was amended by adding the Bill of Rights. The first ratified amendment prohibited Congress from doing what the colonists never seriously complained about the British government doing infringing upon the freedom of speech.

James Madison, who drafted the Bill of Rights, insisted upon referring to speech as the freedom of speech, so as to emphasize that it preexisted the government. If you could have asked Madison where he believed the freedom of speech came from, hed have said it was one of the inalienable rights Jefferson wrote about in the Declaration.

Stated differently, each of the signatories of the Declaration and ratifiers of the Bill of Rights manifested in writing their unambiguous belief that the freedom of speech is a natural right personal to every human. It does not come from the government. It comes from within us. It cannot be taken away by legislation or executive command.

Yet, a mere seven years later, during the presidency of John Adams, Congress enacted the Alien and Sedition Acts, which punished speech critical of the government.

So, how could the same generation in some cases the same human beings that prohibited congressional infringement upon speech have enacted a statute that punished speech?

To some of the framers the Federalists who wanted a big government as we have today infringing upon the freedom of speech meant silencing it before it was uttered. Today, this is called prior restraint, and the Supreme Court has essentially outlawed it.

To the antifederalists or Democratic-Republicans, as they called themselves the First Amendment prohibited Congress from interfering with or punishing any speech.

Adams Department of Justice indicted and prosecuted and convicted antifederalists among them a congressman for their critical speech.

When Jefferson won the presidency and the antifederalists won control of Congress, the Federalists repealed the speech suppression parts of the Alien and Sedition Acts on the eve of their departure from congressional control, lest it be used against them.

During the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln locked up hundreds of journalists in the North who were critical of his war efforts. During World War I, President Woodrow Wilson whom my alma mater Princeton University is trying to erase from its memory arrested folks for reading the Declaration of Independence aloud or singing German beer hall songs.

Lincoln argued that preserving the Union was more important than preserving the First Amendment, and Wilson argued that the First Amendment only restrained Congress, not the president. Both arguments have since been rejected by the courts.

In the 1950s, the feds successfully prosecuted Cold War dissenters on the theory that their speech was dangerous and might have a tendency to violence. Some of the victims of this torturous rationale died in prison.

The governments respect for speech has waxed and waned. It is at its lowest ebb during wartime. Of course, dissent during wartime which challenges the governments use of force to kill is often the most important and timely speech.

It was not until 1969, in a case called Brandenburg v. Ohio, that the Supreme Court gave us a modern definition of the freedom of speech. Brandenburg harangued a crowd in Hamilton County, Ohio, and urged them to march to Washington and take back the federal government from Blacks and Jews, whom he argued were in control. He was convicted in an Ohio state court of criminal syndicalism basically, the use of speech to arouse others to violence.

The Supreme Court unanimously reversed his conviction and held that all innocuous speech is absolutely protected, and all speech is innocuous when there is time for more speech to rebut it. The same Supreme Court had just ruled in Times v. Sullivan that the whole purpose of the First Amendment is to encourage and protect open, wide, robust, even caustic and unbridled speech.

The speech we love needs no protection. The speech we hate does. The government has no authority to evaluate speech. As the framers understood, all persons have a natural right to think as we wish and to say and publish whatever we think. Even hateful, hurtful and harmful speech is protected speech.

Yet, in perilous times like the present, we have seen efforts to use the courts to block the publication of unflattering books. We have seen state governors use the police to protect gatherings of protesters with whose message they agreed and to disburse critical protesters. We have seen mobs silence speakers while the police did nothing.

Punishing speech is the most dangerous business because there will be no end to it. The remedy for hateful or threatening speech is not silence or punishments; it is more speech speech that challenges the speaker.

Why do folks in government want to silence their opponents? They fear an undermining of their power. The dissenters might make more appealing arguments than they do. St. Augustine taught that nearly all in government want to tell others how to live.

How about we all say whatever we want and the government leaves us alone?

Denver voters will decide if they want to give their city council members more freedom to spend taxpayer money – Denverite

2020, the year of Unexpected Big Things Happening, might help you understand whats behind the push from the citys legislative branch.

If voters allow it, the Denver City Council will gain a little power over the citys purse come November.

The year is a little over halfway over and 2020 has already given Denverites a public health emergency and a movement against racist policing. Covid-19 testing kits, emergency shelters, overtime pay for police officers responding to protests and the weapons they used on protesters all cost money.

Denvers mayor has the sole authority to initiate spending changes mid-year. Also: The mayor and (to a far lesser extent) the Denver City Council decide how to spend our money six months before each year begins. As City Councilwoman Robin Kniech told Denverite last year, Problems do not always run on a budget cycle.

So Kniech sponsored an initiative that would give her and her fellow legislators the power to initiate spending adjustments mid-year in the event of a future public emergency or a windfall from, say, an opioid settlement.

On Monday, the council referred the measure to taxpayers by a vote of 12 to 0 with Councilwoman Debbie Ortega absent.Denverites will see the question on their November 3 ballot.

Mayor Michael Hancock does not support the ballot measure, spokesman Mike Strott said via email. Strott said that the recent unexpected and unprecedented economic volatility demonstrates that mid-year budget changes are irresponsible. While Kniech floated the bill to add nimbleness, Brendan Hanlon, the citys chief financial officer, thinks it will hinder the citys ability to respond to economic challenges.

Brendan Hanlon articulated concerns about the proposal, which include: undermining our conservative budget practices, compromising the citys bond rating, inhibiting accurate forecasting ability and leaving the city vulnerable to revenue volatility, Strott stated. There is also a history of successful collaboration with council on mid-year budget items, as they arise.

Parkland softball completes day of comebacks with win over Freedom, earns showcase title – lehighvalleylive.com

The first inning wasnt kind to the Parkland softball team on Thursday at Coca-Cola Park.

But the rest of the frames were just about perfect as the Trojans took home the Lehigh Valley High School Softball Showcase title.

Parkland rallied from a 3-0 deficit in the first inning against Northampton to earn a 4-3 semifinal victory.

Following that win, the Trojans kept the comeback magic going, shaking off a 2-0 first-inning deficit to beat Freedom 6-2 in the championship game.

Its definitely great because we didnt have our senior year, Parkland senior catcher Giana Schick said. I got to play with my girls again. And catch for Katie (Zaun). Shes a junior, so that was nice. I didnt get to have that season with her. And we played great.

Schick broke a 2-2 tie with an RBI single in the third inning against Freedom.

Parkland senior left fielder Andrea Thomas then broke the game open in the next at-bat and made it 6-2 with a three-run homer to left field.

For Thomas, hitting a homer at Coca-Cola Park, a place she has frequented as a fan, was very exciting.

This was on my bucket list, Thomas said about playing at the home of the Lehigh Valley IronPigs.

Parkland junior pitcher Katie Zaun took home the tournament MVP award with another strong outing, shutting out the Patriots in the final six innings. After a very impressive first day of the tournament, Zaun held Northampton scoreless in the final four frames of the semifinal on Thursday.

Schick, Thomas and senior third baseman Alison Superka all had a pair of hits in the championship game. Superka had the go-ahead two-run double in the semifinal victory over Northampton.

Freedom junior right fielder Gabby Glick went 3-for-4 in the championship game.

Senior pitcher Juliana Presto added a pair of hits for the Patriots.

This was about JP. She was our only senior in the tournament. And this was about her, Freedom coach Michele Laubach said. At one point, I said to her, were down 6-2, I said, its up to you. Do you want to keep hurling or do you want to play third?' And shes like, Im going to throw.' I said, this is for you.

In between the semifinals and the championship game, there was a senior ceremony featuring more than 60 seniors from the teams that participated in the three-day tournament. Each of the seniors were introduced as they walked alongside their parents and then greeted their coaches at home plate.

I dont think we could ask for anything better than a beautiful three days of the event, said Laubach, who was the main organizer of the tournament. Just today at Coca-Cola Park, it really was a very neat experience.

It was another championship for a Parkland softball program that has won six Eastern Pennsylvania Conference crowns in a row and five District 11 titles in the last six seasons.

Its a great tradition. Im so glad that I got to be a part of it, said Schick, who will play at Manhattanville College in New York. My coaches definitely molded me and set me ready to go to college. We have titles. And its just a great experience with all the girls.

Let Freedom Ring Wherever the People’s Rights Are Trampled Upon": What We Can Learn From Nelson Mandela Today – TIME

When Nelson Mandela became the first democratically elected president in South African history in 1994, the world looked like a very different place. His election was a symbol of a new birth of freedom around the world. The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1991 and the end of the Cold War had helped spur a democratic revolution not only in South Africa but around the world. Between the start of the 1990s and 2005, the number of democracies on the planet increased from about a third of nations to nearly half. Mandela himself was a global icon not only of democracy but pluralism, and his triumph seemed to spell the end of an era of authoritarianism and ethnic nationalism.

Now, as we celebrate Mandela Day on July 18than international day of servicewe are in the midst of a global coronavirus pandemic, and democracy and pluralism are under attack in every region on earth. From Poland to Turkey, from Russia to Brazil, ethnic nationalism is ascendant, and authoritarian leaders and autocratic regimes are undermining the ability of people to vote, eroding the independence of judiciaries, curtailing freedom of speech and of the press. According to the non-profit Freedom House, we are in the 14th straight year of a global decline in freedom. In America, not only are we suffering from the pandemic, but there is a powerful national movement against racial and cultural inequities, while we have a president who is closer in spirit to the racist apartheid leaders whom we thought Mandela had consigned to the dustbin of history.

When I worked with Mandela on writing his autobiography Long Walk to Freedom, I had a little mantra that I would say to myself: WWNMD? What Would Nelson Mandela Do? Its an excellent guide to life, but not an easy one to live up to. Mandela never took the path of least resistance. Yes, he would compromise, but he wouldnt compromise on his core principle which was achieving democracy for his people. Nelson Mandela was by nature an optimist, but he was as hard-headed as they come. He did not embrace the consoling view of history that, as Martin Luther King said (in a line often quoted by Barack Obama), the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice. For him, justice was never inevitable. If the world was going to bend toward justice, he would have to do the bending himself.

Mandela never saw America as a shining city on a hill. In fact, the president who first used that phraseRonald Reaganregarded Mandela as a terrorist and his government supported the South African apartheid regime during the Cold War. (Mandela was only officially removed from U.S. terrorist watch lists in 2008.) In his unpublished prison journal, written in the 1970s while he was on Robben Island, Mandela said that while he had American friends and supporters, I hate all forms of imperialism and consider the U.S. brand the most loathsome and contemptible. In our many hours of interviews for the book, Mandela told me how, when he was underground in the 1960s, he had sought help for his organization, the ANC, from the U.S. and other Western nations and was always rebuffed. He was well aware of reporting at the time that the CIA had tipped off South African police as to his whereabouts when he was underground. I remember when I was working with him in 1993 there was an evening event in Johannesburg celebrating the end of apartheid with then Vice President Al Gore as the guest of honor. Mandela smiled at me and said, You Americans think you ended apartheid.

Mandela admired Dr. King and followed the American civil rights movement closely. One enormous difference, which Mandela understood better than anyone, was that in South Africa, Black people were a repressed and disenfranchised majority, not a minority. Mandela welcomed the protests led by Dr. King as he would have the Black Lives Matter demonstrations. Mandela organized and led many protest campaigns himself in the 1950s, but it was the Sharpeville demonstration in 1960, in which 69 Black protesters were shot to death by the white police that led him to part ways with Dr. Kings commitment to non-violence. Shortly after that demonstration, he journeyed down to Natal to meet with Chief Albert Luthuli, then the head of the African National Congress (ANC), to argue that the organization needed to embrace the armed struggle. He, of course, opposed the decision, Mandela told me, because he was a man who believed in non-violence as principle. Whereas I believed in non-violence as a strategy, which could be changed at any time the conditions demanded it.

For Mandela, freedom and democracy for his people were the single highest undeviating goal which justified the use of nearly any means to get there. When he visited the U.S. in 1990, shortly after his release but before he became president, he was asked over and over by the American press whether he would renounce violence in his struggle for freedom. He refused to do so. In Atlanta, he was greeted by a small crowd of protesting white supremacists and former members of the Ku Klux Klan. In his speech in Atlanta, he ended by saying, Let freedom ring wherever the peoples rights are trampled upon.

In 1995, President Mandela created the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), which was a public commission to look at the roots of apartheid and racial injustice. That was the Truth part. The Reconciliation part was that people could come forward and confess their crimes and receive amnesty. Many white policemen and security officials did so. The Commission electrified South Africa and became a vehicle for transcending the countrys deep divides. For Mandela, it confirmed his belief that forgiveness helps both the forgiven and the forgiver. Indeed, it was powerful to see the relatives of men and women who were murdered by the old apartheid government forgive their former oppressors.

A handful of American cities like Greensboro, N.C. have had local truth and reconciliation commissions, and now Boston, Philadelphia and San Francisco are planning similar ones. A number of legislators, including Congresswoman Barbara Lee, California, have called for a national TRC to look at the history of slavery and discrimination. The South African example is a powerful precedent for America. A national Truth and Reconciliation Commission coupled with a serious look at the idea of reparations is a way to seek closure on a dreadful aspect of our history. As Mandela used to say, its never too late to do the right thing.

So many people over the years have said to me that its extraordinary that Mandela could forgive his own oppressors. I always smile to myself because I knew how deeply wounded he was by his own past and his suffering. But he understood that as a leader and symbol, he must always project forgiveness, and he never ever failed to do so. He understood that while it was impossible to truly forget the past, we must relinquish its hold over us.

In 1994, I remember driving with him to what would be his office in the Union Buildings in Pretoria, which had been the seat of the old apartheid government. As you drive into the imposing complex, you pass a 10-foot-high statue of J.B.M. Hertzog who was the prime minister of South Africa in the 1930s. Mandela smiled at it as we passed. In 2013, the statue of Hertzog was moved to a remote part of the grounds and replaced by an enormous bronze statue of Nelson Mandela with his arms raised in triumph.

Military Medicine joining forces to fight COVID-19 all around the world – Stripes Japan

From the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the efforts of Navy Medicines research and development enterprise (NMR&D) to support everything from outbreak response to laboratory detection and warships to floating hospitals highlights the speed and relevance of military medical and scientific capabilities that help make the U.S. armed forces so strong.

From staffing aboard the Navys hospital ships and aircraft carriers to clinical studies at hospitals and in the field, many of Naval Medical Research Centers (NMRC) staff members were out helping to quash COVID-19 during quarantine. Navy Capt. Charmagne Beckett, senior clinical research medical officer at NMRCs Infectious Diseases Directorate, deployed within three days of receiving the order to the U.S. Forces Japan (USFJ) where she is now the Assistant Officer in Charge.

The USFJ Surgeon, dual hatted as the U.S. Air Force 374th Medical Group (MDG) Commander, submitted several requests for forces to support the COVID-19 mission. The additional forces allowed the standing up of the Surgeon Cell with the mission "to monitor, prevent, contain, and mitigate the spread of COVID-19 disease through direct action and collaborative efforts to preserve Warfighter readiness by keeping our service members, civilian employees, family members, and our neighboring community healthy, resilient and safe."

Multiple commands from the Navy and Air Force responded to the request with personnel from all over the country, including Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton, Wright Patterson, Randolph Air Force Base (AFB), Randolph AFB, Davis-Monthan AFB, Scott AFB and Naval Medical Center San Diego. Beckett and the 14-member team are providing knowledge, skill sets and capabilities from a variety of disciplines: preventive medicine, infectious diseases, advanced care nursing, medical planning, public health analytics and medical surveillance. Beckett and the Surgeon Cell team are providing direct support and advisement of all COVID-19 related activities.

We are hopeful that the USFJ Surgeon Cell provides strength to the overall COVID-19 response across Japans sub-unified commands. Specifically, at the 374th MDG, clinical research activities were limited prior to COVID-19 but the need to establish access to potential life-saving therapeutics was great thus paving the way for speedy processing of protocol approvals and training, Beckett said.

The 374th MDG located at Yokota AB, Japan, ensures medical readiness of the 374th Airlift Wing, 5th Air Force, the U.S. Forces Japan Headquarters staff and provides health care, including occupational health, preventive medicine and environmental protection to more than 11,000 personnel.

Working in a new environment even temporarily requires adjustments to professional routines as well as personal. The additional COVID-19 restrictions and requirements do not hinder the work efforts but they can sometimes add to the challenges and no deployment is without challenges.

The major challenge is the requirement to gather and synthesize the rapidly evolving information regarding COVID-19. We are cautious to avoid missing important information that would threaten to impact operational missions, Beckett said.

This mission demands learning and adapting to a joint environment, she added. After 26 years on active duty, staying flexible is a personal, life-long lesson that I've continued for this mission. Things change swiftly and constantly especially with COVID-19.

Beckett and the Surgeon Cell team are expected to remain in Japan for roughly 170 days and they are already planning redeployments. A new rotation will replace the current team in order to maintain the critical functions. NMR&D has deployed over 30 people to the COVID-19 fight to date.

Family of card games

Poker is any of a number of card games in which players wager over which hand is best according to that specific game's rules in ways similar to these rankings. Often using a standard deck, poker games vary in deck configuration, the number of cards in play, the number dealt face up or face down, and the number shared by all players, but all have rules which involve one or more rounds of betting.

In most modern poker games the first round of betting begins with one or more of the players making some form of a forced bet (the blind or ante). In standard poker, each player bets according to the rank they believe their hand is worth as compared to the other players. The action then proceeds clockwise as each player in turn must either match (or "call") the maximum previous bet, or fold, losing the amount bet so far and all further involvement in the hand. A player who matches a bet may also "raise" (increase) the bet. The betting round ends when all players have either called the last bet or folded. If all but one player folds on any round, the remaining player collects the pot without being required to reveal their hand. If more than one player remains in contention after the final betting round, a showdown takes place where the hands are revealed, and the player with the winning hand takes the pot.

With the exception of initial forced bets, money is only placed into the pot voluntarily by a player who either believes the bet has positive expected value or who is trying to bluff other players for various strategic reasons. Thus, while the outcome of any particular hand significantly involves chance, the long-run expectations of the players are determined by their actions chosen on the basis of probability, psychology, and game theory.

Poker has increased in popularity since the beginning of the 20th century and has gone from being primarily a recreational activity confined to small groups of enthusiasts to a widely popular activity, both for participants and spectators, including online, with many professional players and multimillion-dollar tournament prizes.

Poker was developed sometime during the early 19th century in the United States. Since those early beginnings, the game has grown to become an extremely popular pastime worldwide.

In the 1937 edition of Foster's Complete Hoyle, R. F. Foster wrote: "the game of poker, as first played in the United States, five cards to each player from a twenty-card pack, is undoubtedly the Persian game of As-Nas." By the 1990s some gaming historians including David Parlett started to challenge the notion that poker is a direct derivative of As-Nas. Developments in the 1970s led to poker becoming far more popular than it was before. Modern tournament play became popular in American casinos after the World Series of Poker began, in 1970.[1]

Poker on television increased the popularity of the game during the turn of the millennium. This resulted in the poker boom a few years later between 20032006.

Examples of top poker hand categories

In casual play, the right to deal a hand typically rotates among the players and is marked by a token called a dealer button (or buck). In a casino, a house dealer handles the cards for each hand, but the button (typically a white plastic disk) is rotated clockwise among the players to indicate a nominal dealer to determine the order of betting. The cards are dealt clockwise around the poker table, one at a time.

One or more players are usually required to make forced bets, usually either an ante or a blind bet (sometimes both). The dealer shuffles the cards, the player on the chair to his or her right cuts, and the dealer deals the appropriate number of cards to the players one at a time, beginning with the player to his or her left. Cards may be dealt either face-up or face-down, depending on the variant of poker being played. After the initial deal, the first of what may be several betting rounds begins. Between rounds, the players' hands develop in some way, often by being dealt additional cards or replacing cards previously dealt. At the end of each round, all bets are gathered into the central pot.

At any time during a betting round, if one player bets, no opponents choose to call (match) the bet, and all opponents instead fold, the hand ends immediately, the bettor is awarded the pot, no cards are required to be shown, and the next hand begins. This is what makes bluffing possible. Bluffing is a primary feature of poker, one that distinguishes it from other vying games and from other games that make use of poker hand rankings.

At the end of the last betting round, if more than one player remains, there is a showdown, in which the players reveal their previously hidden cards and evaluate their hands. The player with the best hand according to the poker variant being played wins the pot. A poker hand comprises five cards; in variants where a player has more than five cards available to them, only the best five-card combination counts. There are 10 different kinds of poker hands such as straight flush, four of a kind etc.

Poker variations are played where a "high hand" or a "low hand" may be the best desired hand. In other words, when playing a poker variant with "low poker" the best hand is one that contains the lowest cards (and it can get further complicated by including or not including flushes and straights etc. from "high hand poker"). So while the "majority" of poker game variations are played "high hand", where the best high "straight, flush etc." wins, there are poker variations where the "worst hand" wins, such as "low ball, acey-deucey, high-lo split etc. game variations". To summarize, there can be variations that are "high poker", "low poker", and "high low split". In the case of "high low split" the pot is divided among the best high hand and low hand.

Poker has many variations,[2][3] all following a similar pattern of play[4] and generally using the same hand ranking hierarchy. There are four main families of variants, largely grouped by the protocol of card-dealing and betting:

Five Card Draw:A complete hand is dealt to each player, face-down. Then each player must place an ante to the pot. They can then see their cards and bet accordingly. After betting, players can discard up to three cards and take new ones from the top of the deck. Then, another round of betting takes place. Finally, each player must show his or her cards and the player with the best hand wins.

Community card poker: Also known as "flop poker", community card poker is a variation of stud poker. Players are dealt an incomplete hand of face-down cards, and then a number of face-up community cards are dealt to the centre of the table, each of which can be used by one or more of the players to make a 5-card hand. Texas hold 'em and Omaha are two well-known variants of the community card family.

There are several methods for defining the structure of betting during a hand of poker. The three most common structures are known as "fixed-limit", "pot-limit", and "no-limit". In fixed-limit poker, betting and raising must be done by standardised amounts. For instance, if the required bet is X, an initial bettor may only bet X; if a player wishes to raise a bet, they may only raise by X. In pot-limit poker, a player may bet or raise any amount up to the size of the pot. When calculating the maximum raise allowed, all previous bets and calls, including the intending raiser's call, are first added to the pot. The raiser may then raise the previous bet by the full amount of the pot. In no-limit poker, a player may wager their entire betting stack at any point that they are allowed to make a bet. In all games, if a player does not have enough betting chips to fully match a bet, they may go "all-in", allowing them to show down their hand for the amount of chips they have remaining.

Other games that use poker hand rankings may likewise be referred to as poker. Video poker is a single-player video game that functions much like a slot machine; most video poker machines play draw poker, where the player bets, a hand is dealt, and the player can discard and replace cards. Payout is dependent on the hand resulting after the draw and the player's initial bet.

Strip poker is a traditional poker variation where players remove clothing when they lose bets. Since it depends only on the basic mechanic of betting in rounds, strip poker can be played with any form of poker; however, it is usually based on simple variants with few betting rounds, like five card draw.

Another game with the poker name, but with a vastly different mode of play, is called Acey-Deucey or Red Dog poker. This game is more similar to Blackjack in its layout and betting; each player bets against the house, and then is dealt two cards. For the player to win, the third card dealt (after an opportunity to raise the bet) must have a value in-between the first two. Payout is based on the odds that this is possible, based on the difference in values of the first two cards. Other poker-like games played at casinos against the house include three card poker and pai gow poker.

A variety of computer poker players have been developed by researchers at the University of Alberta, Carnegie Mellon University, and the University of Auckland amongst others.

In a January 2015 article[5] published in Science, a group of researchers mostly from the University of Alberta announced that they "essentially weakly solved" heads-up limit Texas Hold 'em with their development of their Cepheus poker bot. The authors claimed that Cepheus would lose at most 0.001 big blinds per game on average against its worst-case opponent, and the strategy is thus so "close to optimal" that "it can't be beaten with statistical significance within a lifetime of human poker playing".[6]

Diet and Weight Loss: Using Social Robots to Support Human Health and Well-being – Robotics Business Review

Dr. Nicole Robinson, a research fellow at Monash University, works across two disciplines engineering and medicine. Specifically, robotics and psychology.

She has led a new research trial offering a glimpse into the near-future of digital healthcare. It found social robots as helpers can deliver a multi-session behavior-change treatment around diet and weight reduction without the need for human intervention.

The results showed a robot-delivered program helped people to cut snack episodes by half, and lose, on average, 4.4 kilograms in weight. The trial also found that an autonomous robot-delivered program may be as effective as a human clinician in the same context.

Robinson was recently interviewed by the Monash Lens, a Monash University publication that publishes commentary and stories by Monash University academics and researchers, about social robots, her research, and what the future might or might not hold. The original interview can be found HERE.

Monash Lens: Where did this interest in robotics and robots begin for you?

Nicole Robinson: Ive been interested in technology for a very long time. Any time there was a new gadget or tool available, it was always something I wanted to get my hands on. The idea of a social robot really sparked my imagination it comes from a childhood dream of having robots around and seeing them in a societal context.

Monash Lens: But you started off studying people?

Nicole Robinson: I started in behavioral science learning about people, how they behave, and the things they do. Then I started getting more interested in robots, and how robots can interact with people, what they can do, and how they should operate in society.

It was a fantastic crossroad between the two disciplines I was interested in. We can look to behavioral science to find new ways to make robots more effective with people.

Monash Lens: What exactly is a social robot?

Nicole Robinson: A social robot is a robot that can communicate and interact with people. The first ideas in robotics would have been that robots would eventually talk to people, interact with them and be able to support them in their daily life whether that is at home, in society or in the workplace.

Monash Lens: But youre looking at them specifically in terms of health and well-being interventions with individuals?

Nicole Robinson: Yes. The behavioral intervention side of things is still relatively new. Theres been previous work in digital health and well-being programs using smartphones and web-based digital applications. We were interested to see what the utility of social robots might have in the space to support health and well-being.

Monash Lens: The trial you led was about unhealthy, high-calorie snack foods and drinks. What did you find out?

Nicole Robinson: We developed the robotic health coach using principles from evidence-based practice, but shaped to be delivered by a robot. In the trial, people who did complete the treatment program worked through the steps provided by the robot, and made improvements to their diet intake.There was an average weight loss of 4.4kg, and people decreased their snack episodes by over 50% after having a conversation with the robot about their behavior. Weve found it was effective without the need for human intervention, demonstrating that robots could be important tools to help promote healthy daily behavior.

Monash Lens: Why do you think it worked well?

Nicole Robinson: When we talked to people about what was important to them, people mentioned that the robot is non-judgemental. It was able to have a discussion with a person about a behavior that is sensitive to them, and talk to them about the steps they could take to make changes. If there is a behavior that a person is embarrassed about such as eating a lot of sugary drinks or cans of soda then it might be easier to talk openly if you dont feel as if you will be judged.When you can have that open and honest conversation, and participate in treatment and come up with a plan that works best for you based on your current situation, then thats something that can help support you to make a change.

Monash Lens: Is there a threshold in robotics around attachment? You want people to feel comfortable, but not too comfortable?

Nicole Robinson: Some see robots as a way to complete the steps, create a plan, and make those changes in real life. Others have a much more relational focus in terms of the interactions they had with the robot, such as the robot was very friendly, and provided support and emotional warmth. Robots can appeal to both sides.

The program is designed to prompt self-reflection. The robot goes through a series of questions designed to get people thinking about how they might make a change.

There seems to be a threshold where you want to develop the robot to be personable and friendly enough to work with in a treatment session, but not so much that it misrepresents what it is or what it can do. If we had the robot saying, I understand how you feel, that would not resonate too well, because people know robots cant feel, in that sense.We need to make sure that we make careful scripting choices so the robot appears to be supportive, but not so much that it comes across as fake and sterile.

Monash Lens: How attached do some people get? Do they name the robot?

Nicole Robinson: Some people do. Some feel quite fond of social robots this concept of anthropomorphism where people give inanimate objects a sense of personality, emotion and human-like quality. For some people that feeling can be really quite strong; they can get a real sense of connection and understanding. For others, they see it as a machine, no different from a screen or a tablet or an interactive kiosk. They have no additional feelings. Its a very individual thing.

Monash Lens: It sounds like that strange episode of Black Mirror where a small robot takes over a girls life.

Nicole Robinson: Thats definitely science-fiction. The concept comes up a lot when you talk about robotic systems that take on some form of human-like qualities. Were nowhere near that level of sophistication. Social robots cant operate to that level of autonomy or intelligence. Robots do what we program them to do.

Monash Lens: How might it work for a person who wanted to cut down on soft drinks as part of their healthcare?

Nicole Robinson: The program is designed to prompt self-reflection. The robot goes through a series of questions designed to get people thinking about how they might make a change. The robot might say, if you wanted to make a change, what would you need to do? The robot would then be prompted to ask them to think about how they would create a plan to see positive change in their lifestyle.Its about asking questions and getting people to think about a goal that would work for them. Thats another fascinating thing. We did not have detailed personalisation in the robot interaction, but laying out these steps and getting people to think out loud, come up with a goal, plan and a strategy that works best, they found that they did improve their dietary intake and achieve some weight loss.

Monash Lens: What are the next steps with this technology?

Nicole Robinson: Looking at it in closer detail. Can we apply the social robot coach to other daily health areas? This includes making the robot interaction more personalised to each person, which might help to increase health behavior for people that may need extra support or encouragement to make a start.

Monash Lens: Could it work in addiction?

Nicole Robinson: Its possible. Theres an increased risk, so it should be paired with clinician support. The robot would then be an additional feature or treatment access point.

Monash Lens: Do you anticipate resistance from clinicians to a robot taking on some aspects of health and well-being treatments?

Nicole Robinson: The idea of a robot does spark some different interpretations of what that means, and what it would be like in real life. If we were programming a robot to act exactly like a clinician it would not be appropriate, and mostly likely met with some hesitation.If a robot can be programmed to provide support to treatment, robots then become another technology that can extend the reach of the clinician to provide greater support to both patients and practitioners.

An ex-Googlers new robot reimagines the future of home automation – The Verge

It looks like a telescoping grabber tool attached to a hat stand, but it could be the future of home robotics. Meet Stretch, the first device from Hello Robot, a startup founded by former Google director of robotics Aaron Edsinger and Georgia Tech robotics professor Charlie Kemp, that came out of stealth today after three years in development.

Stretch is not a consumer robot thats ready to roll into your apartment and start doing the dishes, but rather a research platform that Edsinger and Kemp hope will lay the groundwork for home automation in the years to come. The bots lightweight and low-cost design could be a blueprint for future robots, especially those designed to help look after the elderly or people with physical disabilities, allowing companies to automate a range of household tasks the way the Roomba has automated vacuuming.

Our long term mission is to see these types of robots in homes and workplaces being useful and helpful to people, Edsinger tells The Verge. What we anticipate now, though, is research labs, corporate R&D, and venture-backed startups using this for a variety of applications, all of which will move the ball forward for these mobile manipulators.

The problem with these mobile manipulators as robots with grabbing arms and hands are known is that theyre big and expensive, creating a bottleneck for researchers.

Yes, some companies do show off humanoid robots at trade shows that they claim can vacuum the floor or fetch you a beer from the fridge, but these machines are just puppets, only able to work in limited circumstances and no more functional than Nintendos R.O.B. robot toy. At the other end of the spectrum, mobile manipulators used by academics and researchers, like Willow Garages PR2, are far more capable but also heavy, complex, and pricey. The PR2, for example, weighs 220kg and costs hundreds of thousands of dollars. Its not easy to move about or test in new environments, and it represents a sizable investment.

Its like a giant old computer when what you want is a laptop, says Edsinger.

Stretch, by comparison, has been designed with simplicity and low cost in mind. Instead of using an expensive industrial arm with multiple joints and degrees of freedom, it has a single telescoping grabber attached to a central hoist that achieves a similar range of motion at a fraction of the price. A single Stretch unit costs $17,950 still expensive when compared to the consumer market but a bargain for academics and researchers.

The arm is touch-sensitive for safety and can carry items up to 1.5kg in weight. It definitely takes a hit in terms of functionality (its not strong enough to open a fridge, for example), but its well-matched to moving things about on flat planes like tables, shelves, and counters.

Stretch has a wheeled base like a Roomba thats 34 by 33cm in size, making it small and nimble enough to maneuver around tight spaces like corridors and small kitchens. And it uses an inexpensive depth-sensing Intel RealSense camera and 340-degree LIDAR sensor to survey and navigate its surroundings, allowing it to be operated remotely or autonomously. Theres also a microphone array built into the head that supports speech recognition for voice commands and a programmable LED light ring to give feedback to users.

If any single design choice exemplifies Hello Robots simple is better philosophy, though, its the robots grabber: a minimalist piece of hardware built from a pair of rubber cups and some metal springs.

Kemp says that when designing the bot, they quickly dismissed the idea of using human-like hands, which are overly complex and liable to break. Instead, they wanted a grabber that would stand up to real-world tests. So they looked to a ready-made research group: users on Amazon reviewing home grabbing tools for people with disabilities.

We went through thousands of reviews, looked at the best reviewed grippers out there, used by real people in real homes grabbing objects they really wanted, and this [design] came out on top, both in the evaluations on Amazon and in our labs, says Kemp.

We were able to make a robotic version of it and its really just so versatile and forgiving. It doesnt have to be in the exact right place to work, its just good at grabbing onto stuff.

While the hardware is polished, the unsolved problem for Stretch (and for home robots more generally) is how will these machines be controlled? Are they going to use AI to carry out tasks autonomously, or will they be operated remotely, like the wheeled delivery robots used to deliver groceries and takeouts?

Originally, says Edsinger, the team envisioned Stretch as a consumer product that was teleoperated: something that could be used to help people in assisted living scenarios, for example. They soon realized, though, that the economics of this didnt work out. Stretch is relatively capable, but like all mobile manipulators, its incredibly slow. And if youre going to hire someone to control a robot from afar for hours at a time just to carry out some simple jobs, its cheaper to get them to do the work in person in a matter of minutes.

As we got into it, it became clear that some level of autonomy was needed, says Edsinger.

To that end, the company has imbued Stretch with some basic autonomous capabilities. It can navigate by itself around rooms and grab and pass objects once the action has been initiated. But it cant carry out complex tasks like folding clothes or cleaning surfaces by itself. Thatll be up to other researchers to test and implement.

The agnosticism in Stretchs design, though, reflects the desires of Edsinger and Kemp to make sure the project has longevity. As the mantra of the robotics industry goes: robots are hard, and startups in this area fail frequently when faced with real-world challenges.

Edsinger is a veteran of Googles abortive foray into robotics. The startup he co-founded, Meka Robotics, was bought by the search giant in 2013 along with a string of other robot companies, including Boston Dynamics. There were high hopes for Googles entry in the market, but the companys efforts fizzled out as it realized the limitations of consumer robotics.

Even, now, says Edsinger, the business case isnt quite there yet for a consumer robot ... the technology isnt quite there yet.

The answer, he says, is to not rush things. He and Kemp have avoided the rocket fuel of venture capital in the hopes of building a sustainable business through sales. The research edition of the Stretch robot has already been sold to a half-dozen research labs, which they say will provide invaluable feedback on what the market really needs.

We realized that the best thing for us to do to really solve this problem is to be around for a while, says Edsinger, to not take a giant swing for the fences and disappear if we miss.

For all of the unanswered questions facing Hello Robot, Edsinger and Kemp are certainly adamant about the possibilities of Stretch. Its just simpler and easier to use than anything else on the market, they say, and it opens up a lot of possibilities for home robotic research.

Kemp, for example, has been using Stretch prototypes around his house for years. Hes used the robots to play games with his children and carry out basic chores. One Thanksgiving, when he was away from home with family, he even used Stretch to feed his cat. Controlling the robot over the web using his laptop, he was able to open up tins of cat food and tip them into a bowl as well as fill up glasses of water from the refrigerator and pour those out.

Ive had this long term dream of having a versatile robot in my home, and now Ive got one, its just a lot of fun, he says. If you have a $400,000 robot its really hard to imagine hiding Easter eggs with it for your kids. It constrains your thinking when you have these huge, expensive robots. But its not so with a machine that costs less than $20,000.

Both men are understandably cagey when it comes to suggesting a timeframe for when a robot like Stretch might be doing useful work as a consumer device. But its certainly a matter of years, perhaps even decades. They point out that the Roomba (a phenomenal product) took decades of work to get to its current abilities, and it only does a single, relatively simple task. Theyre hoping to create machines that do much, much more.

Fruit picking robots and vertical farming receive government funding – Essential Retail

A fruit picking robot scheme led by Saga Robotics in Lincoln will receive nearly 2.5 million as part of a new UK government funding initiative to drive efficiency in food production.

The programme, dubbed Robot Highways(Lincoln), will involve robots assisting farmers by carrying out energy intensive physical farm processes such as picking and packing fruit and treating crops to reduce critical pests and diseases.

It is one of nine new projects supported by a 24 million package from the UK government, where big data, artificial intelligence, and robotics are being used to help cuts costs in UK farming and reducegreenhouse gas emissions in the food supply chain.

Another project in Nottingham that converts carbon dioxide into clean animal feed is also receiving more than 2 million to generate clean, sustainable food for fish and poultry with a smaller carbon footprint. Led by Nottingham company Deep Branch Biotechnology and part of local consortium React-First, the project will turn carbon dioxide from Drax Powers Selby power station into animal food with minimal water usage and without the need for arable farmland.

The funding will help the group use technology to create a greener alternative to soy and fishmeal for the animal industry, enabling industries that traditionally create higher levels of waste, such as agriculture, to improve their environmental footprint, according to the government.

Grocery chain Sainsburys and the Scottish Aquaculture Innovation Centre are working with the programme.

Science minister, Amanda Solloway, said: From robotics assisting our farmers in fruit picking, to technology that convertsCO2to clean animal feed, the incredible projects we are backing today represent the future of farming.

Working with the best of British science, we are turning our most creative ideas into pioneering projects that will accelerate our transition to net zero food production, boost jobs and drive forward the UKs economic recovery.

Other projects receiving funding include an autonomous growing system led by Optimal Labs in London, and InFarm2.x another programme based in the capital that aims to develop a farming system to grow a wider variety of fruit and vegetables than is currently possible by producing crops in vertically stacked levels, rather than on a single level surface, such as a field.

The latter project is led by vertical farming business, InFarm, and will receive over 3 million in government support.

Body of fisherman recovered from Root River near Peterson – WXOW.com

PETERSON, Minn. (WXOW) - The Fillmore County Sheriff's Office said searchers have recovered the body of a fisherman in the Root River Wednesday afternoon.

Fillmore County Sheriff John DeGeorge said that they were notified around midnight that the man was missing. A friend of the man said he'd gone fishing alone on the river Tuesday afternoon but never returned home.

Using an airboat from the Minnesota DNR, the man's body was recovered shortly after 1 p.m. in the Root River between Peterson and Rushford.

The man's body was found a short distance downstream from the man's flotation raft according to the sheriff.

An autopsy is scheduled to determine how the man died.

The man's name isn't being released pending notification of relatives.

The search was led by the Rushford Fire Department with the assistance of the Minnesota DNR, Winona County Dive Rescue, Houston Fire, Rushford Police, and the Fillmore County Sheriff's Office.

Whalan foregoes renting of city hall until further notice – Fillmore County Journal

Due to concerns with the COVID-19 pandemic, the Whalan City Council has made the decision to not allow any rentals of the city hall building until after December 31, 2020.

Present at the Monday, July 13, 2020, regularly scheduled Whalan City Council meeting were Mayor Marlys Tuftin, councilmembers Owen Lewis, Tanya Cook, Thore Everett Johnson and Kim Berekvam, as well as City Administrator Michele Peterson. The meeting was held in the Whalan City Hall and was also available online through Zoom.

Following two additions, the agenda was approved.

The minutes from the June 8, 2020, council meeting were approved, as well as the treasurers report.

There were no visitor comments.

Continued business

Mayor Tuftin gave an update to the City of Whalans COVID-19 response. Late fees for electric service have been waived recently to provide some financial relief to residents during the current pandemic. The decison was made to continue waiving the late fees for electric service.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the council feels it would be best to not allow any rentals of the city hall building until the end of the year. The council will revisit the issue after December 31, 2020.

Dust control will not be done this year.

City rounds were discussed. There are a few potholes in alleys that need to be filled with gravel. The council will request city maintenance worker Randy Berekvam fill the potholes in alleys. Johnson and Lewis will obtain estimates for further work on city streets.

Peterson has gotten a website for the City of Whalan up and running. There is no charge to the city for the website cityofwhalan.weebly.com. The council encourages residents to visit the website and offer any suggestions or content for the website.

Peterson has made updates to the ordinances which were recommended at the June council meeting.

The City of Whalan has $1,000 available from the Lanesboro Chamber of Commerce for beautification purposes. There was a brief discussion on what items could be included under beautification and further discussion needs to take place on the matter.

New business

Two residents, Ben Ruberg and Diane Snyder, expressed interest in serving on the Planning and Zoning board which had two open seats. They were both appointed to the board.

A proposed resolution by Ben Ruberg supporting diversity failed due to lack of a motion.

The City of Whalan had a savings account which had not been active for quite some time, as well as two CDs. Peterson stated that the bank currently has a special offer for a 17 month CD paying .65% interest, which is better interest than the city is currently receiving. She suggested that the city combine the savings account and the two CDs into one CD to take advantage of the current offer.

A discussion on whether to replace a transformer was tabled until further research is completed. According to Johnson there are transformers in the city shed which may be serviceable.

The council approved a zoning permit request by Steve and Diane Snyder to build a stairwell on the back of their property for safety reasons.

Peterson reported that the City of Whalan received notification from the Minnesota Department of Health that the water testing turned out well.

The next regularly scheduled Whalan City Council meeting will be held Monday, August 10, at 5 p.m.
