EDMONTON It was almost 30 C as Edmonton Oilers fan Darnell Belcourt stood outside the protective bubble that surrounds Rogers Place and waited for the puck to drop in the teams opening qualifying round game against the Chicago Blackhawks.

The jumbo screen he was watching was inside the fence that surroundeda plaza thats intended for players, coaches and staff to relax outdoors, but a few fans like Belcourt still felt it was the best place to watch as the NHL resumed its COVID-19 truncated season on Saturday.

Im going to be here every game. Next time Im going to bring a chair, though, Belcourt laughed as he alternated between standing on concrete and sitting on the small window ledge of a nearby office building.

Comfy chairs and cold beer werent far away, however, as many fans filled bars near Rogers Place at least as much as new social-distancing rules would allow.

Its going on right there! exclaimed Hanna Warawa, who watched the game on a screen set up on the patio of Mercers Tavern, directly across the street from the arena.

David Clanahan, who watched at the Thrift Shop bar not far away, said August seemed like a weird time to watch hockey. But hot as it was, he still wore a jersey.

Its way too hot, but worth it, he said.

In Toronto, the streets around Scotiabank Arena and its nearby secure zone were relatively quiet when the first game between the New York Rangers and Carolina Hurricanesbegan earlier on Saturday.

Many nearby restaurants were closed and much of the perimeter around the arena was blocked off. Kellys Landing Bar Grill Hub Restaurant was showing the games on its screens near the arena but had many tables available a better indication of interest in Canadas biggest city might come Sunday night when the host Maple Leafs open against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Jordan Alexander, manager of Sport Chek at Maple Leaf Square near the arena, said theyre selling about one-eighth the amount of Leafs merchandise compared to Toronto Raptors items in recent weeks. The Raptors also began their restart on Saturday near Orlando, Fla.

Alexander figured some streets might be shut down for some fanfare, but that didnt happen and so far its been pretty minimal impact.

I was expecting to see fans waiting to see the players, he said. I thought people might come down, but people have been respectful in terms of giving space and all of that.

Self-described massive Leafs fans Michael Papaeliou and Alyssa Derosario made a day trip to the city from Markham, Ont., to visit the Hockey Hall of Fame and possibly catch a game on TV at a restaurant Saturday.

So excited for it to return, Papaeliou said. The NHL is doing a really great job, better than any other league, to make this work.

They praised the leagues COVID-19 health and safety protocols, and the blockades set up around the Fairmont Royal York, one of two hotels the NHL is using in Toronto.

Especially in a city like Toronto thats so busy, its good to see that theyre practising the right rules and regulations safety-wise, said Derosario.

During the Oilers-Blackhawks game in Edmonton, about 40 adults and children stood on Jasper Avenuenot far from Rogers Placeprotesting an indoor mask bylaw that went into effect in the city Saturday.

Many fans watching in bars, however, seemed to appreciate the precautions the bars were taking, such as requiring people to sanitize their hands when they entered.

It seemed like the best way to still watch the game around some people but still taking some reasonable safety precautions,Clanahansaid.

Nicholas OConnell, who was also at Thrift Shop, said he had his mask, and was just thankful hockey was back.

We didnt think wed be sitting here a couple of months ago because of COVID, and now were able to hang out with our friends which is pretty good.

WWE Hall-of-Famer Lita Discusses The Women’s Evolution – Bleeding Cool News

WWE Hall-of-Famer Lita was a guest on a recent episode of Corey Graves's After the Bell podcast, and one of the topics they covered is the much-lauded Women's Evolution. Though Lita's full-time career lasted just under a decade, she remains one of the most beloved WWE stars of all time. Lita's full-time run with WWE ended in 2007, and she was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2014. But she recently made a brief in-ring comeback in 2018 to compete at the Evolution PPV. Graves wanted to know how Lita felt as a wrestler from the Attitude Era and Ruthless Aggression era, seeing the environment that today's female WWE Superstars operate in.

"What I love seeing now is the rise in women supporting women, like the whole locker room cheering each other on and seeing that a good match for two women is a good match for the entire locker room and for other opportunities," Lita said. "I feel like for me and for Trish at the time, it was like more fend for yourself. Cool, we've got this spot, but we're in this spot under the boys' rules, so we gotta fend for ourselves and hope that we continue to get these opportunities and forge this path for ourselves, hoping that other people could join in. But we gotta keep our heads down because we got this tiny little light coming through the door that we gotta try to just, we can't kick it in because we're gonna get smacked back, so we gotta kinda keep like creaking that door open to let people come in."

"It's so rad," Lita said of the current environment for female superstars. "I love now, as big as the moments were that were the firsts, it's cool that we're running out of firsts. That's where you've made real progress. Where it's not like the girl's match, it's just like, who are the matches on the card tonight, who am I stoked to see on the card tonight? It's not defined by gender."

"Yeah, for sure," Lita said when Graves asked her if she ever experienced envy at what today's female superstars are allowed to do. "When I saw that first Money in the Bank match, Elimination Chamber, these things that a woman could go nowhere near," Lita explained. "If somebody would have thrown that into the pitch meeting, it would have been like a record scratching. Going to seeing it happen, I don't know exactly what that word is if it's envy or what, but there is like a part of the first, I'm like, no way, this is so cool. I can't believe these girls are getting to do this, because it was so ingrained for me for so long to be like, shut up, you're so lucky that you're getting to do this, have this opportunity, so you better like it and play ball and do your bra and panty matches when we ask you to do those, so you keep getting to be thrown through a table occasionally."

Listen to the full podcast interview here. Lita is currently working on a new show called KAYfABE along with fellow wrestling vets Christy Hemme and Gail Kim, though the show had the misfortune of attempting to crowdfund just as the coronavirus pandemic was starting, and is on hold for now.

Chad McMahon is a lifelong professional wrestling fan and now journalist. Chads interests also include comic books, movies, netflix, and other sports including football, baseball and basketball, both college and professional.

The phoenix rises: Here are some bird species that have risen from the dead – The Financial Express

By Reya Mehrotra

The world has seen many species of birds go extinct, but now we are seeing an interesting trend of de-extinctionalso called resurrection biology or species revivalismof a few birds. This process of evolution is known as iterative evolution. Here are some bird species that have risen from the dead.

Turquoise parrotNative to eastern Australia, the parrot species went extinct in 1915. The small parrot is yellow and green in colour with a bright turquoise blue face. Its wings are bluish red. The population had crashed in the early 20th century and is recovering only now. Habitat loss due to cattle farming was one major reason for it. After extinction in 1915, they were seen again in South Wales in the 1930s. After protection efforts were undertaken, it is now listed as Least Concern. It mainly feeds on fruits, flowers, grasses, seeds and insects, and nests in hollows in gum trees.

Canada geeseThese are very popular and found in Canada and parts of the US. They are adaptable to many habitats and thrive in grasses, near grains or berries. Their numbers began to dwindle at the beginning of the 20th century. Effective protection programmes, laws and their reintroduction in places where the numbers were low led to a rise in their numbers. The large wild goose species can be identified from its white cheeks and chin, brown body and black head and neck. They are herbivorous and skilled at living in human altered areas. It has now been introduced into the UK, New Zealand, Ireland, Argentina, Chile, etc. These birds can commonly be found in parking lots, golf courses and urban parks, and enjoy a close relationship with humans.

Northern bald ibisThis migratory bird is known for its unfeathered pinkish red face. It feeds on small insects, lizards and other small animals. It was once spread over Middle East and parts of Africa and Europe, but disappeared from Europe around 300 years ago. In recent years, reintroduction programmes have been set up for increasing its numbers. The programme first started in 1977 with two adults and nine young birds. It is usually found in barren, semi-desert or rocky habitats close to running water. It is long-legged with long curved bills.

Aldabra white-throated rail birdThe Aldabra white-throated rails have reappeared through iterative evolution. It is known to be the last flightless bird in the Indian Ocean. The chicken-sized birds, indigenous to Madagascar, have migrated to Aldabra and lost their ability to fly. They, according to studies, have reappeared twice after thousands of years and, in both occasions, become flightless. It was said to have disappeared in the sea as the water levels rose around 1,36,000 years ago and recolonised the Aldabra island around 1,00,000 years ago. They are identified by the white patch on their throats, a reddish hue on their chests, a long colourful tail and olive green backs. The Aldabra rails ancestors white-throated rails inhabiting Madagascar can still fly.

Bald eagleThis bird of prey is found in North America. The adult bald eagle is actually white-headed with a brown body. The female bald eagles are nearly 25% larger than the males. The bald eagle is the national bird of the US and appears on its seal. However, it nearly became extinct in the late 20th century. Efforts helped in increasing its numbers and, in 1995, it was removed from the list of endangered species. By 2007, it was also removed from the list of threatened species. It is a powerful flier and seldom dives vertically to hunt fish. A carnivore, fish comprise the majority of its diet. The birds mature sexually at four-five years of age and are known to mate for life.

Asian crested ibisAlso known as Japanese crested ibis, the bird that is native to eastern Russia, China and Japan, It had disappeared by 1963 with only one left. Conservation efforts led to the increase in numbers of. Today, there are 330 in the world and the numbers are growing. They inhabit areas with tall trees, wetlands and agricultural lands, feeding on crabs, frogs, insects and small fish.

Pink pigeonThe species, endemic to Mauritius, became nearly extinct in the 1990s. Even today, only 400 pink pigeons remain. But its an improvement from 1991 when only 10 remained. The numbers could increase because of conservation efforts. The birds, classified as vulnerable by the IUCN, are herbivorous and feed on exotic and native plants. They can be identified by the pale pinkish grey plumage on their head, shoulders and underside, along with pink feet. The beak is a dark pink colour and has a white tip. With dark brown wings and a broad, rust-coloured tail, their eyes are dark brown surrounded by an eye-ring of red skin.

OnePlus Nord and Hannes Becker: 3 camera filters and the evolution of landscape photographer – Domus

Are these filters anyhow related to the presets that you use at work? Most of the time Im working with only a few presets, that I use as base to develop Raw images. These presets need lots of adjustments, as mood and lighting is always changing. With the development of the Nord presets I tried to create presets that not only work as a base but also as the final layer on top. As each of them works best with one specific kind of light, all of them usually work with any scenery. Colorwise the presets are representing my very own cold, unsaturated and matt look that I have been sticking to the past years.

Do you use your smartphone as a camera? The best camera is the one youve got with you. I take my smartphone everywhere to capture images and videos. With modern day technology and the perfection of phone cameras, one can barely see any differences between a phone and camera shot, especially on Social media. Thats very exciting and I cant wait for whats to come.

More than 1.5mln follow you on Instagram. And sometimes we forget that it was Instagram that introduced the concept of a photography filter to millions of users worldwide. Do you have any memory using filters? Even bad memories count... When I first started with Instagram 7 years ago I always used these filters. I basically had no idea about photography or editing, the filters introduced me to create something special which wasnt ordinary or normal. And without Instagram I would have not become a photographer after all. So retrospectively its crazy how a small app or a filter might change somebodies hobbies or even career. Im looking forward to see my filter being used and hopefully I can inspire some people to look into photography.

Youre a landscape photographer, among the noblest genres of photography, with a long story going back to the 19th century. How much did technology change your job?Instagram introduced me to the idea of becoming a landscape photograher. I grew in a small village in the middle of Germany, wheres not much to shoot, but my passion and love for nature evolved here. Being able to use Instagram as a portfolio to find clients and work that allows you to travel to remote places and see the world, is such big privilege. With photography technology becoming even better, it seems like shooting landscapes becomes easier as well and it does. But to capture something unique and meaningful on the other hand becomes more challenging too. Simply because more people are trying out photography.

R3 Stem Cell International Now Offering Four Joint Injections for Only $3950 in Mexico – PR Web

Four Stem Cell Joint Injections for Only $3950! (888) 988-0515

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (PRWEB) July 29, 2020

R3 Stem Cell International is now offering patients the opportunity to receive four stem cell joint injections for only $3950. With 50 million stem cells total, patients may choose which extremities they would like treated.

Several studies have shown just how well stem cell therapy works for arthritic joints (BMC Musculoskelet Disord. 2016). At R3 International, umbilical cord tissue is obtained from a lab with a long history of accreditation and pristine safety record. The lab abides by quality assurance standards that exceed those of the FDA.

Stem cell treatment for knees in Mexico at R3 works amazingly well. Patient satisfaction surveys at the center reveal that nine out of ten patients say they would have the procedure again and recommend it to friends and family.

According to R3 CEO David Greene, MD, MBA, "The biologics don't need preservative and viability exceeds 95%. The pureness and potency truly makes the difference in outcomes. Four joints for under $4000? What we put together for patients is incredible!"

The treatment process begins with a free phone consultation with one of R3's licensed, experienced stem cell doctors. Because the treatment includes 50 million stem cells, four joints may be included. The dedicated patient concierge representative assists with travel logistics. Travel from San Diego is included to the clinic, which is only 20 minutes from the San Diego airport.

Image guidance is used at the Center to ensure injection accuracy. In addition to arthritis treatment, R3 International offers stem cell treatment for autism, Lyme, COPD, kidney failure, neuropathy, diabetes, MS, ALS, stroke and much more.

Call (888) 988-0515 to learn more about therapies offered, and visit https://stemcelltreatmentclinic.com to read about the process.

Cyberpunk 2077 shows off the ruined dreams district of Pacifica in new concept art – Critical Hit

Night City isnt exactly a sprawling Metropolis that youd want to plan a vacation to. Between corporate espionage and radical trans-humanist activists hacking away at their flesh in a gruesome example of how best to remove those tattoos that you wish youd never gotten, Cyberpunk 2077s sandbox is rife with danger and intrigue.

There are some great locales to visit in Night City though! And by great, I mean differently awful. Pacifica is one such zone, a luxurious resort on the ocean that was designed to be a relaxing escape from Night Citys main hub of cyber-chaos and body-jacked maniacs. And then the the money ran out halfway during development, the developers pulled a dine and dash, and all that remains is a concrete jungle of half-baked dreams and bolt-holes for renegades looking to escape the reach of big business.

Pacifica could've been Night Citys money-making vacation resort, but once the investment dried up it became a husk left to rot. Now, instead of tourists, the district is overrun by gangs and violence, with The Voodoo Boys protecting the community forsaken by NCPD. #ConceptArt pic.twitter.com/3gjoKzHJvE

According to CD Projekt RED, Pacifica is currently controlled by the Voodoo Boys, nihilistic drug dealers who habitually terrorise people with senseless violence. Fans of magic and agents of chaos, the Voodoo Boys exploit the impressionable youth of Night City, regularly fleecing them of their chas and their lives as they war with other gangs.

This isnt the only slice of Night City that has been shown off lately. CD Projekt RED has also offered a look at the lifestyles of the rich and the famous (Theyre always complaining) in the Westbrook District, while Heywood exists as a neighbourhood of contrast: Parks and skyscrapers, lethal gangsters and cops who are in the pocket of the corporations.

Westbrook is considered by many to be the best place to live and have fun in Night City. If youve got eddies, you come here to spend them. And if you don't? Well, take out a loan and pretend youre on top of the world even for just one glorious night. #ConceptArt pic.twitter.com/gGAnMVMYWL

Heywood is a neighborhood of contrastfrom modern skyscrapers and parks in the north, to dangerous, inhospitable slums in the south. It's the biggest bedroom in Night City, where gangs like Valentinos and 6th Street get down to businesslegal and illegal alike. #ConceptArt pic.twitter.com/wc5i1sxsJB

Which zone will you choose to visit? The choice is yours, but at least you can look fashionable while getting your cyber-head cyber-kicked in by a junkie in search of a cyber-kick, while doing so.

An unsupported American conspiracy theory found a foothold in Europe. New research shows how – NewsDio

PizzaGate's unfounded claim emerged during the 2016 election. Later that year, a gunman appeared and fired an AR-15 inside the pizzeria, saying he was trying to rescue non-existent child sex slaves.

Now, a report from the Internet trust tool NewsGuard has found that the coronavirus pandemic is clearly helping this American ideology establish itself in Europe.

In the report, NewsGuard sees an increase in QAnon groups and social media pages in April, as the blockages caused by the new virus left millions of people practically confined to their homes.

Coronavirus conspiracies increased along with increased infections.

Such claims acted as a "gateway drug" to QAnon, providing Europeans with the "perfect way to" the online sect, Chine Labbe, managing editor for Europe at NewsGuard, told CNN.

QAnon started out as a one-time conspiracy with a cryptic anonymous post on the 4chan online forum in 2017. The person behind this, who followers would later call "Q", made the false claim that Hillary Clinton was going to be arrested. There was no such arrest.

But similar posts fueling other arrest claims and "deep state" actions continued to appear on 4chan. It is unclear who was behind the posts, or whether the same person posted the ones that followed.

QAnon supporters have compared the early posts, and the later posts, with breadcrumbs or "drops," like Hansel and Gretel, as they refer to them.

Followers of QAnon, whose online behavior has been compared by analysts to a virtual cult, spread the unfounded claims, amplifying them with manipulated or out-of-context evidence posted on social media in an attempt to back up the allegations.

Experts fear that the "dedication QAnon supporters have to their beliefs also provides an opportunity for foreign interference to use these narratives to their advantage," Aoife Gallagher, an analyst with the Institute's Digital Research Unit for CNN, told CNN the Strategic Dialogue (ISD).

The move has raised concerns about online bullying. Twitter banned more than 7,000 accounts, citing its policy of taking action on accounts with "the potential to cause harm offline."

But while QAnon has its roots in the US, supporting and disseminating unsubstantiated theories of mass shootings and elections, it has since become an amorphous ideology, appropriating conspiracies from elsewhere that sit with its anti-elite message. .

"It is such an easily translatable framework, because it is so meta," said Labbe. "It is about world elites having a Machiavellian plan, and every country in the world has elites."

This ability to assimilate old hoaxes with new conspiracies around the coronavirus outbreak has found QAnon "a broad group of supporters" beyond the US among some New Agers and the conservative right, Gallagher told CNN.

"It is tangential to the extreme right in the United States, using anti-Semitic tropes and attacking the same people as the extreme right, (but) as it spreads, we are also seeing that it is attractive to (the) left anarchist side, " she said.

QAnon's ability to evolve is not only at risk of seriously "undermining" democracy, due to its damaging narrative about individuals and institutions, but it also "undermines the disclosed official information and could hinder the effort to control the virus." Gallagher added.

QAnon has managed to incorporate the local socio-political concerns of Germany, Italy, France and the United Kingdom into its anti-elite "deep state" narrative, according to the NewsGuard report.

European QAnon groups have gained a large online presence, with the report identifying "448,760 followers or members" on the social media groups it analyzed.

Memberships began to increase in late 2019 and early 2020, particularly once the coronavirus pandemic began to take hold, according to NewsGuard.

According to the report, a French YouTube channel with videos about QAnon has amassed 21,500 subscribers since its inception in April this year. A QAnon Facebook group in the UK, created in the same month, has garnered more than 18,000 followers, according to the report.

National political complaints have found a sounding board in QAnon.

German social media accounts portray Chancellor Angela Merkel "as a 'deep-state puppet' that needs to be overthrown," the report says.

In France, President Emmanuel Macron has been dismissed as "a pawn" in QAnon's French publications.

And QAnon's Italian supporters praised former far-right interior minister Matteo Salvini, but treated the country's centrist prime minister Giuseppe Conte with contempt.

Meanwhile, debates are raging over British QAnon groups on Facebook over whether Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been "installed" by "Q" and is draining the "British swamp" along with United States President Donald Trump.

"In such panel discussions, Brexit and the British government's decision to ban Huawei from UK 5G networks are cited as evidence of Johnson's loyalty to Q," the report writes.

The report finds that QAnon is thriving in Germany. Local ideology-linked social media accounts hit the scene as early as 2018, including what is now a German-language YouTube channel of 99,600 followers and a Facebook group with 30,100 members.

German celebrities have also joined the nexus of conspiracy.

Berlin-based vegan chef Attila Hildmann, who has posted on social media about his support for theories in the QAnon constellation, implored the United States to "liberate" Germany in June 2020, according to the report. Her post, on the Telegram messaging app, falsely claimed that Merkel was working "alongside Gates, the Zionists, the Transhumanists and the Communists" to plan the "genocide of the Germans".

In a statement to CNN, Hildmann said he is not a follower of "Q", but watches the movement "and supports it." He added that "Germany is not a free country, but it is still occupied by the Americans and, therefore, only the great nation of the United States has the power to liberate the Germans from Merkel's reign of terror!"

According to the NewsGuard report, singer Xavier Naidoo has been a "driving force" behind the spread of the conspiracy in Germany, routinely sharing QAnon content with his 84,000 Telegram subscribers. CNN has seen at least five posts it has shared from QAnon groups on Telegram.

When asked to respond to allegations that Naidoo has fueled the spread of QAnon in Germany, a Naidoo spokesman said: "Xavier has nothing to do with QAnon."

A separate analysis by Gallagher at ISD found that QAnon's popularity in Germany coincides with Trump's attacks on NATO and the European Union, a sentiment that draws anti-Atlantic conspiracy groups.

"There is a good appetite for that kind of rhetoric," Gallagher said, adding that German QAnon groups on Telegram, "have seen a huge increase in membership by tens of thousands" since the beginning of 2020.

The theory remains on the fringes of European discourse, but analysts worry that adherents ally with more conventional movements.

According to the NewsGuard report, Facebook groups supporting France's yellow vest movement, or Gilet Jaune, a campaign that began protesting against rising gas prices and has since turned into a larger rally against Macron, "have been particularly interested in Q's narratives recently," the report wrote.

A group from Yellow Vest, which has 196,000 members, shared a QAnon video in July from a French QAnon site, which was created in May. "This shows how in some circles the two fights are interconnecting," Labbe said.

Social media companies have targeted the conspiracy. Three sources familiar with Facebook's work on misinformation told CNN in mid-July that the company plans to take action on QAnon. When CNN contacted this week, Facebook declined to comment.

But the jury does not know if it will stop the spread of ideology. Many say the genie may already be out of the bottle.

Labbe argues that "censorship fuels conspiracies, as soon as you remove the websites, you will find an alternative media platform."

But the opposite is also true. "QAnon flourishes because it is a community where everyone can reinforce their beliefs," said Gallagher. "Facebook groups are one of the main places" where QAnon thrives, he explained. "So it will be interesting to see the next move that Facebook is making."

CNN's Donie O & # 39; Sullivan and Paul P. Murphy contributed to this report.

Tear Gas and Thugs at the BLM Protests in Portland – CounterPunch.org – CounterPunch

On the 59th night of BLM protests on July 25th at the federal courthouse, I was one of the thousands of protestors who went there. It took me a while to struggle through my fears of getting infected with the virus and the limits to my mobility due to old age and hip arthritis. But like so many others, I could no longer stay home. I knew from my previous experiences at many protests over the years, against war, racism, ICE, inequality, and exploitation of workers, that the police were extremely violent, often attacking us with little or no provocations. What was new was that the police had been attacking the BLM protestors non-stop for 58 nights with tear gas, pepper spray, flash grenades, and non-lethal munitions. In contrast to their long history of using violence against non-violent protestors, the Portland police were seen protecting and fraternizing with white supremacist groups like the Patriot Prayer and Proud Boys at their rallies in this whitest of all US cities. When Mayor Ted Wheeler appeared at a protest last week, he was booed by many there, who called out Tear gas Ted. Later that night, Wheeler got a big dose of his own medicine.

The recent deployment of over 100 federal troops to Portland under Operation Diligent Valor by Trump added more fuel to the already fired-up protestors. Trump claims that he sent the feds there to protect federal facilities and officers against violent anarchists, but the reality is this: they have been deployed as an occupying army to crush the protests. Since their arrival in early July, unidentified federal thugs in camouflage have grabbed BLM protestors off the streets, putting them in unmarked vehicles, and detaining them for hours without charge. They have also escalated the violence at the nightly BLM protests at the (In)justice Center and the Federal Courthouse, working with the Portland police to attack non-violent protestors with tear gas, pepper spray, rubber bullets, flash grenades, and non-lethal projectiles. The videos of their actions pepper-spraying people at point blank, firing an impact munition at 26 year-old Donovan La Bella , causing a skull fracture which required an emergency surgery, beating and pepper-spraying Chris David, a 53-year old Navy Vet who was just standing there, and attacking non-violent protestors night after night with copious amounts of tear gas and pepper spray have not only intimidated and terrorized people, but also enraged them.

So far, Homeland Security and the Trump administration have refused to withdraw the federal thugs despite lawsuits filed by Oregons attorney general, the ACLU, state legislators and activist groups. Many of us can no longer remain silent as these accounts of daily violence by the police and feds make clear that what is at stake is not only racial injustice and inequality, but also an attack on our 1st Amendment right to free speech and civil rights.

I was heartened to see so many recent newcomers like the Wall of Moms, the dads, veterans, teachers, union workers, nurses, doctors and healthcare workers at the protest, as well as the die-hards who had been at the frontlines for 58 nights. Their presence makes it much harder for Trump, his supporters and critics of the BLM protestors to separate us into good vs. bad protestors, or to demonize us all as violent anarchists. The government, police and law enforcement agencies have a long history of suppressing many political movements for social change in the past by using this strategy of criminalizing our right to dissent and by deploying police and law enforcement violence to crush the resistance.

Now is the time for us to meet this challenge to protect our rights and to resist being under the boot of a fascist police state. The stakes are high as what happens in Portland will soon be replicated in other cities as Trump threatens to send more federal troops to Chicago, Seattle, Albuquerque and other cities to squash the BLM movement and our demands for justice and equality for all.

As the crowds grew in numbers throughout the night, we sang and chanted words which have become mantras: No justice, no peace, Black Lives Matter, Hands up, dont shoot! Feds go home, Stay together, stay tight! Feds stay clear, the moms are here! Light projections of George Floyds last words flashed across the JC building. I cant breathe. Everything hurts. Please dont kill me. Mama, Im through. We read them in silence, while others were chanting Black Lives Matter over and over again. Other messages flashed by, The power of the people is greater than those in power, The Revolution is Live, Black Lives Matter.

There were thousands of us around midnight. We were there at this nightly ritual of resistance, waiting for the inevitable to happen. Several protestors were trying to pull down the metal fence, which had been reinforced recently. After much effort, some succeeded in breaching the fence at one location. We heard the disembodied voice announcing over the loudspeaker: This is the Portland Police declaring a riot and ordering us to disperse immediately or be subjected to chemical attacks and arrests. The protestors booed and yelled, Fuck the police! Feds out of Portland! in response. Then the attacks began. Loud explosions went off, and clouds of tear gas rapidly spread down the streets from SW 3rd and Salmon. People were screaming and running, ignoring shouts of Dont run!

Despite my old legs and hip arthritis, I managed to run through the waves of tear gas. For a few terrifying moments, my eyes were burning, and I was blinded and disoriented. Luckily, I was helped by the amazing medics, who treated my eyes with a saline solution. I saw them treat other protestors injured by pepper spray, tear gas and rubber bullets. The feds and cops came running towards us, and chased us further and further downtown. None of the protestors who were standing with me had done anything wrong, but the feds and cops kept firing tear gas at us. I saw a few people being arrested near the Apple store downtown. Dozens of police cars with sirens blasting, blue lights flashing, sped down the streets. It was scary how quickly Portland had been transformed from the City of Roses to Little Beirut. Then the police and feds marched off, got into their cars, and drove off. It was a surreal scenethe streets were suddenly empty and quiet again, as if nothing had happened. But we know better. Our resistance is growing, and we will be back!

Why did Trump pick Portland? He’s following the lead of far-right groups, and the city’s history – Salon

Why did Donald Trump pick Portland? It's a question worth asking. There are more than two dozen American cities bigger than Oregon's largest, and of the Rose City's 650,000 or so residents, fewer than 7% are Black. Nearly all the cities larger than Portlandhave more diverse populations, and most have hadsubstantial, ongoing Black Lives Matter protests since Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin killed George Floyd in late May. Yet Trump settled onPortland not New York or L.A. or Atlanta, and notMinneapolis, where this all began as the staging ground for his plan to flood a city with federal police in hopes of escalating violence, all in hopes of generating scary images to frighten Fox News viewers with.

Portland wasn't targeted for public safety reasons, obviously. Trump doesn't care about people's safety, for one thing. For another, the presence of federal police officers is very pointedly to reduce public safety and escalate the violence Trump wants for his campaign ads. It's also a confusingchoice, considering that Portland is one of the whitest large cities in the nation a demographic reality visible on the ground among the protests making it an odd choice for a nakedly racist president who is making a big public stink of his loathing foranti-racism activists. Trump is clearly expanding his war on cities to other places, but Portland was clearly picked for the rollout of thisfascistic crackdown for a reason.

So, again: Why Portland? As with many other things Trump does, it appears he's following the lead of the various far-right, white supremacistand proto-fascist groups that have gainedpower in the years since his election. Groups like the Proud Boys, Patriot Prayer and various others have descendedon the city regularly since Trump's election, generally for the purpose of starting street fights with leftists and creating a spectacle. By targeting Portland for an invasion of federal police geared up like members of an occupying army, Trump is modeling himself after the far-right fringe that has been harassing that city for years.

"Far-right and white nationalist groups often plan rallies and events in areas where a majority of residents are politically and socially liberal, and where communities have reliably produced counter-demonstrations at such events," Jared Holt, an investigative reporter for Right Wing Watch, told Salon. "In the mind of the extremist, they are engaged in a culture war and are choosing to bring the fight to enemy turf."

Far-right groups regularly descend on Portland during the summer months some years, the city has seen multiple rallies often under the banner of "free speech" or protesting againstantifa activists, but mostly in hopes ofattracting counter-protesters and launching street brawls.

As I reported back in 2017, when these groups first started heavily targeting Portland, members of these far-right groups willswap memes and encourage each other to beat the tar out of anyone they deem"antifa."Some of these memes can get violent and disturbing, with references to curb-stomping, stabbingand shooting opponents. Former Chilean dictator AugustoPinochet was held out as a hero, mainly for his reported habit of murderingleftist opponents by throwing them out of helicopters.

As Arun Gupta of the Intercept explained in an articlelast year, the far right saw Portland as the ideal city "to stage violent spectacles" they could then spread throughout social media"to glorify the violence as a recruiting tool and proof of their racial and masculine virility."

Often, these far-right activists would try to justify this behavior by citing "self-defense" against "antifa,"but as Holt explained, it's wise to have "a healthy sense of skepticism" about such claims, sincefar-right groups "plan their events in locations with the expectation there will be counter-demonstrators, and work to actively escalate tensions between opposing sides"

Trump is taking the model developed by the extreme right in recent years, and amplifying it dramatically by using taxpayer-funded resources, including the shadowyfederal police agencies either created or vastly expanded during the post-9/11 campaign against terrorism. But the basic idea is the same: Target Portland for a right-wing show of force, knowing that this will likely provokea strong response fromleftist activists, and use that response as an excuse for increasing the violent repression in a waythat can be packaged and repackaged as sadistic propaganda designed to lure back wavering Trump voters or hypothetical suburban moderates.

The most obvious reason why Portland is a target is, of course, its long history of leftist activism, which does indeed include a contingent whether self-defined as antifa or anarchist or something else that is entirely willing to engage in physical confrontationwith far-right groups whotrawl the streets looking for a fight.

Trump himself is following this same logic, knowing that while most leftists are responding to the federal police with peaceful resistance, some are willing to fight back. Granted, the street scene in Portland is probably nowhere near as violent as Trump would like at most,he's getting images of some people pulling down a fence, setting off fireworksand tagging some buildings but it's the same calculus that far-right groups are employing, which is that some protesters will getunruly and can be spun as "violent rioters" on Fox News.

There's an even deeper reason that Portland has been such a target for the far right and now for Trump, who as usual takes his political cues from the very worst people in America. Thisgoes right back to the aforementioned fact that Portland is one of the whitest cities in the country.

Portland may be known as a progressive city now, but like the entirestate of Oregon, ithas a long history of white supremacy. (Indeed, there are still a lot of openly white supremacist groups inrural easternOregon, who are sometimes visible amongthe far-right groups who regularly descend upon Portland.) In the 1920s, Oregon had the biggest Ku Klux Klan organization west of the Mississippi, which isn't surprising when you consider that the stateeffectively bannedBlack people from moving there until1926. Portland was virtually an all-white city until World War II, and remains more than 75% white today. (Indeed, the city's Black population appears to havedeclined since the 1990s, perhaps reflecting increased gentrification.) In any case, Portland's whiteness is an artifact of decades of discrimination.

Of course Portland's politics have shifted sharplyleftward in recent years. The far right's specific loathing for Portland, then, is to some extentrooted in a sense ofbetrayal at acity that has turned away from itslong history of reactionary and racist politics. The constant drumbeat of far-right rallies, which routinely turn into brawls, aren't just about taking the fight to enemy turf. It's about the far right symbolically trying to reclaim a city that they feel they've lost to the left.

This subtext is often not far from the surface. Far-right activistsroutinely describe Portland's progressives as if they were a stain or an occupying force, as if progressives are illegitimate members of the community who need to be expunged so the city can be restored to its true heritage.

"The West Coast has slowly been infected with communist ideologies throughout our entire culture," saidJoey Gibson of the far-right group Patriot Prayer while promoting a 2017rally, leaning hard into this"paradise lost" framing of the waycities like Portland have become progressive. (Gibson was arrested on a felony riot charge in 2019 after years of orchestrating events that descended into violence.)

Patriot Prayer evenbilled its rallies as opportunities to "cleanse the streets of Portland" in 2018. One of the members of their Facebook group complained about the city's"stench-covered and liberal-occupied streets."

Trump and his acting Homeland Security secretary, Chad Wolf, have embraced this rhetoric that paints progressives in Oregon as an illegitimate power that needs to be overthrown with whatever level of force is necessary.

Trump has repeatedly emphasized that the cities he's attacking, especially Portland, are "run by very liberal Democrats," as if it wereself-evident thattheir leadership is illegitimate and therefore Trump is entitled to send in federal police against their explicit wishes.

Wolf has defended the invasionin similar terms, claiming the administration was "forced" to invade because of "a lack of action from city officials."That's a morelegalistic framing of the same argument, that the elected leaders of Portland aren't legitimate and that the right is more entitled than "liberal" elected officialsto decide what the law enforcement response to protests should look like.

The fact thatTrump is taking his cues from the far-right fringes is, sadly, no surprise. After all, he has recently promoted a conspiracy theory about thecoronavirusapparently concocted by a far-right nut who believes reproductive health problems arecaused by women having sex with demons. The far right is where Trump'sheart is, which is why his impulse after the 2017 riots in Charlottesville, Virginia, was to describe the white supremacists who rampaged there as "very fine people."

That's what happens when you elect aracist conspiracy theorist to the highest office in the land: Federal police are being deployed to imitate the tactics of proto-facist groups whoglamorize violence and long for the white supremacist past. Portland has endured years of abuse from these far-right groups whotreat the city as little more than a stage for their violent culture-war melodramas. Now the president of the United States is following suit.

Between high decibel levels and police inaction, tensions are building between Spokane Planned Parenthood and the pop-up church outside – Pacific…

Ken Peters, founder of the Church at Planned Parenthood.

By Emily McCarty/ Crosscut.com/ July 29, 2020

The debate over whether a Spokane religious group can hold services in front of a Planned Parenthood facility is getting so loud and heated thatit is headed toward a courtroom, where noise ordinances, the right to health care and the First Amendment are all likely to be debated.

The religious group calls itselfThe Church at Planned Parenthood, or TCAPP, and those who attend hear sermons and sing worship songs, all broadcast over a PAsystem. Their services include anti-abortion guest speakers and pastors from around the country.

But Planned Parenthood has been measuring noise levels, which its officials say are disruptive, intimidating, detrimental to the health and safety of staff and clients, and go above the legal decibel limit of city and state noise ordinances. In June, theyd had enough, so they filed a lawsuit against Covenant Church, which started the mobile ministry.

Covenant Church pastor Ken Peters, who founded TCAPP, said he chose to host services outside the facility for a reason.

We want to get as close to Planned Parenthood as we can, because the closer we are, the bigger the statement that it makes, Peters said. It makes a statement that we disagree with what they're doing.

Paul Dillon, vice president of public affairs withPlanned Parenthood of Greater Washington and North Idaho, said the sound is so loud thatits damaging to the health of clients. Patients and staff can hear the songs and sermons throughout the building and inside exam rooms, so much so that theyve had to shuffle patients to different rooms just to be able to provide care, Dillon said.

It's really, really frustrating and should not be allowed to happen, when the laws are very clear in Washington state and the city of Spokaneabout interference with health care facilities, Dillon said. Its extremely unnerving for the patients at Planned Parenthood.

Substantial research has been completed about the negative health effects of excessive noise on patients, which is precisely why Washington state has a statute limiting noise outside of medical facilities, said Kim Clark, senior attorney with Legal Voice, which is representing Planned Parenthood in the lawsuit. Clark said the noise is so loud sometimes that staff cant hear each other when speaking, they lose their train of thought, and headphones cant cancel it out.

Staff have reported that patients will be crying in the middle of their exams, Clark said.

Peters, the pastor, said the services arent intended to be disruptive at allthat, in fact, he would gladly switch to 7 p.m. services to stop thelawsuit. But Peters hasnt changed the time. He thinks that the time of services arent Planned Parenthoods real concern, that its more about the health facility disagreeing with TCAPPs mission.

Were not there to stop their business. Were there to worship God and pray for the end of abortion, Peters said.

About150 people showed up for TCAPPs first service in October 2018, but since then, the gatherings have grown to over 400 by Planned Parenthood's countand over 700 by TCAPP's.

Planned Parenthood's Dillon says its not about singing, or sermons, or worship. Its about politics. The group portrays itself as just a bunch of singing Christians, he said, but he thinks their goal is to shut down Planned Parenthood.

This is not a church. This is not a church at all, Dillon said. You know, they can call themselves whatever they want, [but] in no way, shape or form is this a church.

Journalists have measured the sound from the services at above legal decibel levels, as has Planned Parenthood. While police monitor most every TCAPP service, they have never cited the group for a noise violation.

Legal Voices Clark saidthe Spokane Police Department has given Planned Parenthood multiple reasons why the policehavent enforced the law. But, ultimately, theyve never taken action against TCAPP, no matter how loud and disruptive the services may get.

In fact, it is the impression of both the staff at Planned Parenthood and the church itself that the police are on the side of the church, Clark said.

Peters said they work hard to stay below legal noise ordinance levels, but that the city council, which passed the ordinance in March 2020, is all pro-Planned Parenthood.

We know theyre there with their little sound meters and yeah, its just a stupid game, Peters said. But were doing everything we possibly can to comply with the sound ordinance and still be able to do what we feel is our First Amendment right.

Dillon said the lawsuit was really a last resort for Planned Parenthood, because itspatients should not have to face hurdles to basic health care.

Nobody deserves shame or stigma or bullying or intimidation, which is the goal of this group. Those are the tactics that they use, he said.

Peters responded jokingly when asked about Planned Parenthood staffs feelings of being intimidated.

Some of our singers, they sing quite off-key. So that could scare a lot of people, I understand, Peters said. I guess church scares some people. But it doesnt seem like any sort of threat to me.

Dillon said Planned Parenthood also is concerned about the involvement at TCAPP servicesof Proud Boys, a group designatedas a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Centerbecause some members voice white supremacist or anti-Semitic ideologies.

Peters didnt even know what a Proud Boy was until people accused him of being associated with them, he said, and lumping them in with extremist groups isnt accurate. But Peters said he cant control who comes to his services.

Its city property. I cannot control who comes and who doesnt, Peters said.

Alisha Merkt, 33, said she used the Spokane Planned Parenthood in her early 20s when she was uninsured. She went in for a pregnancy test, which was negative, but she left with a years worth of free birth control, thanks to Planned Parenthoods program for low-income patients.

She now has health insurance through her employer, but stays involved as a volunteer at Planned Parenthoods events. During one volunteer stint, she offered to help keep protesters from TCAPP off the facilitys property.

Merkt described the very tense atmosphere that day as disheartening. This was partially becauseTCAPP providedunfactual information about abortion, she said, andalso because of the service's incredibly loud, disruptive presence.

I felt powerless. I felt really I don't want to say discouraged but if they were staying off the property, I could only stand there and watch in horror, Merkt said. It was just a lot of negative energy and standing there knowing that, aside from making sure they stayed off the property, there was nothing else I could do, despite them disturbing patients inside and upsetting the staff and upsetting volunteers like myself.

Merkt said that Planned Parenthood saved her life back when she couldnt afford health care. She said she thinks a lot about the inconsistency she sees with TCAPP, whose mission is to end abortion, yet protests against a health care facility that provides family planning.

According to 2018 data, abortions madeup only a little over 3% of Planned Parenthood's total services, which include family planning, treatment for sexually transmitted infections, cancer screeningsand wellness exams.

Until they start thinking outside that very narrow viewpoint, they're going to keep pushing their agenda on everyone else because they feel it's their responsibility to save the people or to prevent these abortions, Merkt said. But they don't care outside thatwhat actually happens to the person. Its very selfish.

You can build a working PC inside Minecraft that plays games, including Doom and Minecraft – TechSpot

In a nutshell: Have you ever had the urge to play Minecraft while playing Minecraft? Now, such an unlikely scenario is possible, thanks to a mod that lets you build a computer in-game that can boot several working operating systems.

The feat is possible thanks to the VM Computers mod that comes from delta2force. It uses the open source VirtualBox to run operating systems, including Windows 95, Linux, and more.

The mod itself goes straight into your mods folder, and youll also have to grab VirtualBox 6.1 or newer. But the work doesnt end there: youve still got to get your in-game PC. This involves crafting an ordering tablet and then waiting until a satellite passes over you, which happens five times per day.

Once youve created your virtual hard drive, imported the ISO files, and built your computer, its time for some Inception-like game-within-a-game fun; its possible to play a game of Minecraft within Minecraft.

As is the case with almost everything on the planet, the mod also lets you play Doom 1993 inside the best-selling game of all time, as demonstrated by redditor uDrunkMate.

Weve already seen Windows 95 running via a desktop app, Nintendo 3DS, Apple Watch, Xbox One, and more, but it pales in comparison to Doom. The venerable fps was recently made to work on the Playdate, a retro-style handheld that uses a crank controller. Its also been imported to a McDonalds cash register, John McAfees unhackable crypto wallet, Apples touch bar, a Porsche 911, inkjet printers, a Commodore 64, ATMs, calculators, iPods, and, like Minecraft, on virtual console within the game itself.

Bermuda Introduces a One-Year Visa That Allows Digital Nomads to Work From an Island – Robb Report

You may not be able to work from the office at the moment, but US residents can now take their work-from-home set-up on the roador more precisely, to a sandy Bermuda beach. Following the passage of new legislation, Bermuda has just announced the August 1st launch of the One Year Residential Certification program, which grants non-Bermudians permission to work or study from the island for twelve months, with unlimited entries/exits allowed. With the island located less than three hours from major East Coast cities via non-stop flights, several five-star resorts and villa companies offering monthly residential rentals and even private islands available for exclusive use, theres never been a better time to call Bermuda homeand the office.

Bermuda has always warmly welcomed visitors to her pink sand shoreline, and we are excited to continue that tradition of hospitality with this revised long-stay residency program, Glenn Jones, Interim CEO of Bermuda Tourism Authority, tells Robb Report. This initiative paves the way for an infusion of economic activity for local businesses (and gives us) an opportunity to share our uncrowded open spaces and coveted island lifestyle with travelers from across the globe looking to work or study remotely. Jones adds that thanks to proactive leadership, Bermuda has also managed the pandemic well, with the island re-opening safely and responsibly to regular commercial flights from around the world, including the US, on July 1; find more about its Covid-19 travel policies and requirements here.

The six-bedroom Residence at The Loren is a top long-term rental optionCourtesy The Loren

Once the program goes live on August 1, those interested in being a digital nomad (and who meet the program requirements) can apply for the residency certificate via the governments website, for a one-time application fee of $263. Once approved, newly minted residents are welcome to enter and exit as needed for one year, and can settle down anywhere on the 21-square-mile island. Notable high-end residential rental options include the one- and three-bedroom seaside Villas and the six-bedroom Residence (complete with private beach, tennis court, gym, staff cottages and chefs kitchen) at The Loren at Pink Beach; the two-and three-bedroom Residences at the Rosewood Bermuda resort on Tuckers Point, close to the famed golf course; and the homes and villas available through membership-based companies like Thirdhome. You can also hide away on a private island: Hawkins Private Island, for example, features a Main Villa and a Guard House (both of which sleep eight guests), with rates that include all meals and beverage, boat transfers to the Waterfront Marina, docking fees for boats and yachts, a full staff, watersports equipment and more (contact reservations directly for details on rates.)

Tahiti and Bora Bora are Open to Travellers Again – Outlook India

The islands of Tahiti are now open to tourists across the world. And unlike most popular destinations that have re-opened to tourists, a quarantine period is not mandatory.

Tahit had a small number of COVID cases during the spring months. However, the measures to curb the spread were quite effective, and it has been declared as COVID-free.

Earlier, the islands had banned all international and domestic passenger flights, except the special territorial continuity flights linking Tahiti and Paris. That's because they comprise French Polynesia, an overseas collectivity of France made up of five archipelagoes in the south-central Pacific Ocean. The capital, Papeete, is on Tahiti, French Polynesias largest island..

There are however, a set of health and safety procedures travellers must follow. They will have to provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test, taken within 72 hours of their international departure, and only PCR tests are accepted. Visitors must also carry proof of travel insurance and of a pre-booked accommodation. They must complete an entry form before boarding and must be ready to accept any random on-the-spot test on arrival at Tahitis Faaa International Airport.

Travellers will be given a self-test kit to be used on the fourth day of arrival. Wearing a mask during the in-bound flight and at public places during their stay is mandatory.

Should any traveller test positive during their stay, they will be taken to Tahiti for treatment and observation by local health authorities

French Polynesia has several top-notch resorts at secluded islands perfect for social distancing. After the pandemic, hospitality centres have completely redesigned their functioning to ensure guest safety, and have declared their readiness to host tourists from around the globe.

One of the most popular island stays, the Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora (located on a private reef islet) is already getting booking enquiries. Accessible only by a boat or helicopter, this private island's newly-enhanced overwater bungalows and beachfront estates have natural barriers to crowds. Similarly, the St. Regis Bora Bora Resort is also practising physical distancing by setting up digital contactless communication throughout their overwater villas and spas.

Specifically, they listed the address for a theme park on Jeffrey Epsteins island as 124 Conch St. Bikini Bottom US Virgin Islands. The made-up address appears in several episodes of Spongebob Squarepants as the pineapple house of Spongebob. The internet jumped, and some people accused Nickelodeon of being involved.

No such case. When Jeffrey Epsteins island was raided in 2020, Little St. James real addresses were revealed, none of which involved Conch St. or Bikini Bottom.

Not according to Chrissy Teigan, who took to social media to slam the rumors of her involvement with Jeffrey Epstein. The rumors spread to the point where Teigan had to delete thousands of tweets and is worried for her family as a result.

The rumor started when someone on the internet falsely claimed she was in Jeffrey Epsteins flight logs, traveling to his island, Little St. James. While the leaked flight logs didnt show Chrissy Teigans name, the 35-year-old model and mother of two still received death threats for her alleged connection to Epstein.

Finally, after scrubbing 60,000 hate tweets, Chrissy Teigan broke down in a Twitter rant, dismissing the rumors. When someone called her defensive in response, she snapped back. This I dont get, everyone thinking Im guilty because Im defensive. You understand you are calling me a pedophile, correct?

The people who started this rumor need to go back to history class. Barack Obama wasnt elected president until 2008 and wasnt inaugurated until 2009. Were not sure how this rumor got started, but we know Jeffrey Epstein didnt earn the Presidential Medal of Freedom from any president, not even the president of his own island.

Theres a list of every Medal of Freedom recipient ever, and Jeffrey Epsteins name isnt on it. The Medal of Freedom is the highest civilian honor a US citizen can receive. Its usually bestowed for outstanding achievements in arts, media, education, or science. Not even the president in 2007, George W Bush, awarded Epstein this honor.

A rumor that Jeffrey Epstein sacrificed children on his island emerged when photos of a temple-like structure on Little St. James surfaced. The raid on Epsteins island showed multiple buildings, including an odd building that looked like a doomsday temple. It didnt help that the building featured a bird on top that looked like a harpy.

Other people pointed out that the bird statue on top of the building looked like Moloch. Moloch was an ancient god mentioned in The Bible that demanded child sacrifices. The connection was enough for people to believe Jeffrey Epstein sacrificed kids on his island.

No evidence came out that blood sacrifices took place on Jeffrey Epsteins island. However, some people believe the temple was an homage to Ancient Greece, where wealthy, powerful men having sex with teenagers was a common cultural practice.

The Last Days of the Tech Emperors? – The New York Times

On Wednesday, Representative David Cicilline, Democrat of Rhode Island and chairman of the House Judiciary Committees antitrust subcommittee, opened a half-virtual hearing on Online Platforms and Market Power with a combative opening statement: Our founders would not bow before a king. Nor should we bow before the emperors of the online economy.

That set the tone for the hours of sharp questioning of four of the wealthiest people on the planet: Jeff Bezos of Amazon, Tim Cook of Apple, Sundar Pichai of Google and Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook, whose companies have a combined market value roughly equivalent to the G.D.P. of Japan.

Given the history of Silicon Valleys relationship with Washington, the intensity and precision of some subcommittee members questions were remarkable. It is a sign that significant tech regulation may be closer than we think.

Despite its techno-libertarian image, the tech industry has had close political ties for decades and remarkable success in getting what it wants.

In the late 1970s, venture capitalists and semiconductor chief executives got Capitol Hill and the Carter White House to agree to tax cuts and looser financial regulations. In the 1980s, a group of young legislators became such boosters of the industry that they were known as Atari Democrats. Ronald Reagan extolled Silicon Valley entrepreneurship and helped tech companies fend off Japanese competition.

The bipartisan love affair intensified in the 1990s as Bill Clinton and Al Gore invited tech executives to shape early internet-era policymaking. Newt Gingrich, then the Republican speaker of the House, talked up cyberspace and formed close alliances with libertarian-minded tech thinkers. His partys leaders convened high-tech summits on Capitol Hill.

The lightly regulated online economy we have today is a product of that decade, when Silicon Valley leaders persuaded starry-eyed lawmakers that young, scrappy internet companies could regulate themselves.

Washingtons embrace of tech continued even as questions emerged about the industrys wealth and power. A 2013 Senate hearing to interrogate Mr. Cook about Apples tax avoidance quickly was sidetracked by lawmakers gushing to the chief executive about his companys innovative products. Mr. Pichai faced tough questions at a 2018 House Judiciary hearing, but also was showered with praise.

Google is still the story of the American dream, declared Representative Robert W. Goodlatte of Virginia, the committees chairman at the time.

Those days seemed a dim memory Wednesday. Instead, the mood recalled the traffic safety debates of the mid-1960s that helped catalyze significantly more regulation for the auto industry. After a steady drumbeat of studies and some short-lived congressional inquiries, traffic safety exploded into the public consciousness starting with Senate hearings in the summer of 1965, where top auto executives faced sharp questions about their lax approach to safety.

The evening network news programs showed Robert F. Kennedy, a newly elected senator from New York, grilling the leaders of General Motors about the tiny amount the company spent on safety research. Later that year a young lawyer advising the Senate committee, Ralph Nader, published a blockbuster expos of the industry, Unsafe at Any Speed.

This combination of political and media scrutiny led to passage of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1966, which mandated seatbelts and additional car safety features, as well as road improvements like guardrails and traffic barriers.

Wednesday felt like Big Techs Ralph Nader moment: the pointed questioning by committee members, notably its Democratic women like Representatives Val Demings of Florida, Pramila Jayapal of Washington, Lucy McBath of Georgia and Mary Gay Scanlon of Pennsylvania; the crescendo of investigative journalism that, in part, led to this weeks hearing by shining a critical light on Big Techs practices. And now, this House subcommittee is merely one of several legislative or regulatory bodies considering limits on Big Techs power.

There are of course many reasons tech regulation may not come to pass. The issues at stake are wickedly complex, and quite different for each of these companies, something chief executives sought to underscore in the hearing.

It appears to me, Mr. Bezos observed, that social media is a nuance-destruction machine, and I dont think thats helpful for a democracy. (Mr. Zuckerbergs reaction to that statement sadly was not visible to the audience.)

Large tech companies also have prepared for the regulatory onslaught by starting some of the most well-funded lobbying operations in Washington. They learned a lesson from Microsoft, whose presence in the capital before its antitrust case in 1998 consisted of one employee who worked out of the back of his car because he lacked proper office space.

Although the trial didnt end with Microsoft being ordered to break itself apart, it taught the company that government regulators needed to be taken seriously. And as a result Microsoft tamped down its most aggressive market practices, and escaped much of the yearslong policy scrutiny now facing its peers.

Then there is the sticky problem of public opinion. During other seminal moments carmakers in the 1960s, tobacco in the 1990s the problems posed by unregulated bigness were clear-cut. Cigarettes killed people. Cars were unsafe.

Techs consumer dangers are harder to see and acutely feel on an average day: misinformation, an incomplete search result, an unfairly promoted link, privacy erosion, a skewed algorithm. We may wish we used our smartphones less, or worry about what overuse of social media is doing to our communities and brains.

But we still routinely check our Facebook pages, buy apps via Apple, and click buy on Amazon Prime. Even if, as some representatives noted, we do so because we have little alternative.

What happens next will depend on many things, including the November election. But this week marks the end of Washingtons great love affair with tech, one that helped make these companies bigness possible in the first place.
