Pre-clinical proof of concept data with intracranial administration of the EGFR Dual-targeting CAR-NK cells for the treatment of glioblastoma has been published in Nature Scientific Reports. The EGFR Dual-targeting CAR targets glioblastoma cells expressing EGFR wild-type and/or the mutant EGFR vIII. A single intracranial injection of EGFR CAR NK cells reduced the growth of glioblastoma and showed a statistically significant improvement in survival in animal models. The intracranial injection of the EGFR CAR NK cells remained localized in the brain without entering the systemic circulation or infiltrating extracranial organs or tissues, thus limiting toxicity.

FDA-approved treatment puts rare cancer with skin manifestations on the map – Dermatology Times

A small group of scientists and clinicians are trying to build awareness of this cancer, and how to diagnose and treat it. While this rare and aggressive hematologic malignancy hasnt had a standardized therapeutic approach in the past, that is also changing. The FDA approved tagraxofusp (Elzonris, Stemline) in 2019 as the first medication indicated to treat BPDCN, according to a drug review published June 24, 2020 in the journal Expert Review of Anticancer Therapy.1

Progress aside, theres still a long way to go in creating awareness among dermatologists, primary care physicians, emergency department providers and pediatricians all of whom are most likely to encounter people with possible BPDCN, says Naveen Pemmaraju,M.D., associate professor in the department of leukemia at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Dr. Pemmaraju is senior author on the recent Expert Review of Anticancer Therapy paper, and he led the pivotal study published in April 2019 in the New England Journal of Medicine that led to the FDAs approval of tagraxofusp for the treatment of BPDCN.2

Having the clinical trial is great, but now that the drug is commercially available there was a call for what are the practical considerations for Tagraxofusp in BPDCN? Dr. Pemmaraju says. Thats why we wrote this paper.

Dermatologists, take noteDr. Pemmaraju points to three stand-out practical considerations for providers.

One is that most people in medicine have yet to even hear about the disease, he says. When people on the frontlines see skin lesions, the only way theyre going to know whether its BPDCN is with a biopsy. Tissue is the issue, as they say. If something looks irregular, abnormal and if its clinically indicated to do a biopsy, do a biopsy. A lot of these patients get mistaken for other diseases, infections, other cancers. So, I think the biopsy is important.

The need for expert review goes along with the first practical consideration.

CD123 (interleukin-3 receptor alpha unit) is overexpressed in 100% of BPDCN patients. But thats not the only way to differentiate this cancer on biopsy. CD123, CD4, CD56 as the golden triad of BPDCN, according to Dr. Pemmaraju.

Now we know there are other markers, TCL1, TCF 4, CD303 and others. When you put together these three to six markers, it helps you distinguish BPDCN, which is extraordinarily rare compared to the more common cancers like acute myeloid leukemia (AML), cutis, cutaneous t-cell lymphoma. Obviously, this differentiates completely from skin infections and all these other noncancer entities, Dr. Pemmaraju says.

The second practical consideration is that, although rare diseases commonly have limited-to-no treatment options, a therapy for BPDCN exists and more are being investigated. Studies suggest that BPDCN incidence is as low as 0.44% of all hematologic cancers and 0.7% of cutaneous lymphomas, according to the paper. Despite the low numbers, BPDCN treatment is available with tagraxofusp. Researchers are also conducting multiple clinical trials for BPDCN drugs in development, including the B-cell lymphoma-2 (BCL-2) inhibitor, venetoclax, and a chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy.

The third consideration: The significance of dermatologists and dermatopathologists roles in BPDCN diagnosis.

As we educate our fellow hematologists/oncologists, we must continue to educate dermatologists, many of whom are going to see this disease for the very first time in the clinic before anybody else. I believe BPDCN will soon appear on dermatology and derm-path board exams, Dr. Pemmaraju says.

BPDCN skin lesions usually present as dark and purplish and can be maculopapular.

I would say clinically there is a somewhat distinct look, although I would add the caveat that these lesions act heterogeneously, he says.

Focusing on TagraxofuspResearchers reported that tagraxofusp, aCD123-directed cytotox, demonstrated efficacy in BPDCN patients along with an overall manageable safety profile, according to the NEJM study.

A historically deadly disease, BPDCNs median overall survival after chemotherapy had been 8 to 14 months, according to Dr. Pemmaraju. Hematopoietic stem cell transplant might prolong survival in patients healthy enough to have the stem cell transplant.

Among the 29 previously untreated patients, the survival rates of 59% at 18 months and 52% at 24 months rates that were influenced by the number of patients who went into remission after tagraxofusp therapy and could thus undergo hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation represent an improvement over rates in historically published data. We also observed a 67% overall response rate among previously treated patients. Notably, we report a meaningful survival with tagraxofusp among patients with relapsed or refractory disease (median overall survival, 8.5 months), Dr. Pemmaraju and colleagues report in the NEJM.

Interestingly, patients skin lesions went away rapidly in the vast majority of people treated with tagraxofusp, according to Dr. Pemmaraju.

Capillary leak syndrome emerged as the most drug-associated serious adverse, manifested by edema, tachycardia, hypoalbuminemia and hypotension.

There also is the issue of drug resistance. Researchers have found, in vivo, that resistance to tagraxofusp in cell lines is associated with decreased DPH1 expression and azacitadine might reverse tagraxofusp resistance.

More research is needed to study how combining tagraxofusp with other targeted therapies may improve outcomes. Research also is needed to study tagraxofusp use in pediatric patients. The FDAs approval is for tagraxofusp is as first-line therapy for BPDCN for adults and children ages 2 years and older. But only a small number of pediatric patients have been treated so far, the authors report.

‘Year of Preparations for the Next Fifty Years’ will contribute to country’s development process – WAM EN

ABU DHABI, 3rd August, 2020 (WAM) -- In 2020, the UAEs achievements, most notably the launch of the Hope Probe to Mars and the operation of Unit 1 of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, have proven that the "Year of Preparations for the Next Fifty Years" will significantly contribute to the countrys development process.

Despite the difficult circumstances facing the world caused by the coronavirus, COVID-19, pandemic, the UAE has succeeded in turning challenges into opportunities for innovation and development, which is reflected in its approach to limiting the spread of the virus through a range of creative measures, such as developing technology to discover the virus using lasers that generate results in a record time, using stem cell therapy for patients, and participating in global efforts to find a vaccine.

In 2020, the UAEs achievements reflect the national ambitions and wisdom of its leadership. The Hope Probe project involved nearly 200 Emirati engineers and researchers, who worked hard for six years to fulfil the UAE's dream to reach the Red Planet.

The Barakah Nuclear Power Plant also highlights the UAEs efforts to build the capacities of national cadres in this sector. Nearly 244 employees work for the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation, FANR, with 67 percent being Emiratis, of which 45 percent are in leading and managerial positions. Tesla Inc. has grown bigger than Toyota and Volkswagen combined thanks to a rally more befitting a technology stock than a car maker, and buying it now is probably a mistake for anyone but day traders, an analyst said Tuesday in downgrading the stock.

Risks to the valuation include the possibility a new Tesla model will cannibalize sales of an older one, and rising competition in the electric vehicle market in general, wrote Sanford C. Bernstein analyst Toni Sacconaghi. While Elon Musks company has recently executed well on its strategy, the stocks 481% gain in the past year likely reflects more good news than is probably forthcoming, he said in a note to clients.

Let us be clear: this is a valuation call, Sacconaghi wrote, calling the market value mind-boggling. He lowered his rating to the equivalent of a sell from hold, and maintained his price target of $900, representing a 42% discount to Mondays close. The shares fell as much as 4% to $1,477.60 on Tuesday.

Sacconaghis downgrade follows an advance that pushed the companys valuation over $300 billion at one point, amid investor optimism about strong second-quarter results, a possible inclusion into the S&P 500 Index, and anticipation for new battery technology.

The analyst noted, however, that trying to predict Teslas stock direction in the near term could be a fools game.

Expectations appear achievable/beatable, the forthcoming Battery Day could be noteworthy, and there is strong price momentum in both Tesla and among growth stocks more broadly, the analyst said.

Sacconaghi said he would change his mind if Tesla ultimately demonstrates unique progress in autonomous driving or other software, leading to high margins over time.

The current valuation has led some investors to start valuing Tesla as if it were a technology stock. Sacconaghi noted its market value is now bigger than Toyota and Volkswagen combined, which collectively make 20 million cars every year, compared to Teslas expected 500,000 cars this year.

Separately, Tesla said in a regulatory filing early Tuesday that it has cleared out its balance of deferred revenue related to sales of regulatory credits to other automakers. Without the sale of credits to automakers that are out of compliance with emissions rules, Tesla wouldnt have earned a profit last quarter.

Chief Financial Officer Zachary Kirkhorn said last week that while Tesla expects regulatory credit revenue to roughly double this year, it assumes those sales wont make a significant contribution to the business in the future. Deferred revenue went to zero as of June 30, from $140 million at the end of the first quarter.

Quantum Computing Explained for Investors – Barron’s

Quantum computing was named a breakout technology in 2017 by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. It showed up again on the list for 2020. Does that mean quantum computing is ready for prime time? Possibly. That is good news for the world, but the problem is few know what a quantum computer actually doesand investors dont know what quantum computing means for their portfolio.

Where to start? Microsoft (ticker: MSFT) is a large quantum player. And looking at its quantum business can help frame the issue for investorsand anyone else.

Its helpful to start a few steps back from Microsofts quantum aspirations.

Many people have heard of the quantum realm, thanks in large part to Walt Disneys (DIS) Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Avengers, after all, defeated Thanos in Avengers: Endgamethe highest-grossing film of all timewith the help of quantum tunnels. And the Guardians of the Galaxy navigated a quantum asteroid field in their latest stand-alone film.

In the quantum asteroid field, rocks popped in and out of existence. The idea being that in the quantum realm, almost anything is possible. Quantum has become an analogy for weird, counterintuitive outcomes.

Quantum physics does indeed dictate a bunch of weird things, including particlesnot the size of asteroidspopping in and out of existence.

Physicist Richard Feynman said once that all people need to know about quantum physics is the double-slit experiment.

In the experiment, a single electronwhich is a negatively-charged subatomic particlepasses through both slits at the same time. Very weird. But that is because particles have wavelike properties. A wave of water would hit both slits.

So an electron behaves like a wave. OK. But heres the thing, if someone watches the experiment unfoldputting a detector in front of the slitsthe electron stops acting like water. It goes back to being a particle. Weird.

That, curiously, has some benefits for a computer. In a traditional computer, a bitthe basic unit of computing powercan have a value of one or zero. A quantum bit, more commonly called a qubit, is the basic unit of quantum computing. It can have a value of one or zero or anything in betweenat the same time.

There are other things qubits can do, but multiple, simultaneous values makes quantum computers faster. A 64-bit computer can have roughly 18 quintillion (18 with 18 zeros) values. If a computer can do 2 billion values per second, it will take roughly 300 years to go through all potential values.

A 64-bit quantum computer can have, in theory, all 18 quintillion values at once. Go figure.

MIT put quantum computing back on its technology list in 2020 because a quantum computer with 53 qubits built by Google parent Alphabet (GOOGL) did a calculation, in about three minutes, that would have taken a traditional computer 10,000 years.

Quantum supremacy was demonstrated. Great. So when will consumers be buying a quantum desktop, and when will investors be bidding up Alphabet stock on exploding quantum sales?

Not yet.

Qubits are not reliable yet. There is noise, Stephen Jordan, Microsoft quantum principal researcher, told Barrons. People are still working out the hardware. There are, for instance, superconducting qubits, trapped-ion qubits, and topological qubits.

Picking between qubits isnt like beta or VHS, or a Mac versus a PC. With todays computers underlying hardware is the same and 100% reliable, adds Jordan.

The industry is still working out the hardware. To reduce the noise, usually, you take qubits and string a bunch together to make a computing qubit, explains Helmut Katzgraber, Microsoft quantum principal research manager.

Microsoft, of course, is known for software. Maybe that means what the quantum computing industry needs is quantum Intel (INTC), pumping out the quantum equivalent of silicon chips with 1 billion transistors on them. (A transistor can store a bita one or zeroas information.)

For Katzgraber, the qubit hardware industry will be like FPGA, short for field programmable gate arrays, which are integrated circuits that can be configured into ASIC, short for application-specific integrated circuits.

Xilinx (XLNX) makes FPGAs. They get their supply from businesses like Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSM), and Taiwan Semi gets silicon from a company like Lam Research (LCRX).

There is now a quantum value chain like that. Honeywell International (HON) can make trapped-ion qubits. That is probably as close as investors have to a quantum supplier at this point.

Hardware doesnt have to come before software and applications though.

We have gone through computer creation before, says Katzgraber. We are doing the whole stackthe software to the qubitsall at once.

That speeds development, but doesnt mean there will be a quantum smartphone soonor sooner than it took to go from mainframe to desktop, to laptop to iPhone. Quantum computing will probably look a little different. These [systems] will live in data centers in the cloud, adds Jordan.

Along with hardware comes apps. And a killer quantum app will help elevate the technology from MITs tech review to the nightly news. There are areas where the existing tech is having an impact. Julie Love, Microsoft quantum applications team leader, tells Barrons about several problems being addressed now from traffic light optimization to industrial catalyst for chemical production.

For now, big tech is big quantum. Google, Microsoft, IBM (IBM), and Amazon.com (AMZN) have quantum aspirations. Honeywell has its toes in quantum waters too. Its tough to buy any of those stock as a quantum investment yet.

Superconductor makers dont talk about quantum computing much in filings either. And superconducting is only a $2 billion industry at the moment.

Quantum computing remains a watch item for investorsalbeit an interesting one.

Giant atoms enable quantum processing and communication in one – MIT News

MIT researchers have introduced a quantum computing architecture thatcan perform low-error quantum computations while also rapidly sharing quantum information between processors. The work represents a key advance toward a complete quantum computing platform.

Previous to this discovery, small-scale quantum processors have successfully performed tasks at a rate exponentially faster than that of classical computers. However, it has been difficult to controllably communicate quantum information between distant parts of a processor. In classical computers, wired interconnects are used to route information back and forth throughout a processor during the course of a computation. In a quantum computer, however, the information itself is quantum mechanical and fragile, requiring fundamentally new strategies to simultaneously process and communicate quantum information on a chip.

One of the main challenges in scaling quantum computers is to enable quantum bits to interact with each other when they are not co-located, says William Oliver, an associate professor of electrical engineering and computer science, MIT Lincoln Laboratory fellow, and associate director of the Research Laboratory for Electronics. For example, nearest-neighbor qubits can easily interact, but how do I make quantum interconnects that connect qubits at distant locations?

The answer lies in going beyond conventional light-matter interactions.

While natural atoms are small and point-like with respect to the wavelength of light they interact with, in a paper published today in the journal Nature, the researchers show that this need not be the case for superconducting artificial atoms. Instead, they have constructed giant atoms from superconducting quantum bits, or qubits, connected in a tunable configuration to a microwave transmission line, or waveguide.

This allows the researchers to adjust the strength of the qubit-waveguide interactions so the fragile qubits can be protected from decoherence, or a kind of natural decay that would otherwise be hastened by the waveguide, while they perform high-fidelity operations. Once those computations are carried out, the strength of the qubit-waveguide couplings is readjusted, and the qubits are able to release quantum data into the waveguide in the form of photons, or light particles.

Coupling a qubit to a waveguide is usually quite bad for qubit operations, since doing so can significantly reduce the lifetime of the qubit, says Bharath Kannan, MIT graduate fellow and first author of the paper. However, the waveguide is necessary in order to release and route quantum information throughout the processor. Here, weve shown that its possible to preserve the coherence of the qubit even though its strongly coupled to a waveguide. We then have the ability to determine when we want to release the information stored in the qubit. We have shown how giant atoms can be used to turn the interaction with the waveguide on and off.

The system realized by the researchers represents a new regime of light-matter interactions, the researchers say. Unlike models that treat atoms as point-like objects smaller than the wavelength of the light they interact with, the superconducting qubits, or artificial atoms, are essentially large electrical circuits. When coupled with the waveguide, they create a structure as large as the wavelength of the microwave light with which they interact.

The giant atom emits its information as microwave photons at multiple locations along the waveguide, such that the photons interfere with each other. This process can be tuned to complete destructive interference, meaning the information in the qubit is protected. Furthermore, even when no photons are actually released from the giant atom, multiple qubits along the waveguide are still able to interact with each other to perform operations. Throughout, the qubits remain strongly coupled to the waveguide, but because of this type of quantum interference, they can remain unaffected by it and be protected from decoherence, while single- and two-qubit operations are performed with high fidelity.

We use the quantum interference effects enabled by the giant atoms to prevent the qubits from emitting their quantum information to the waveguide until we need it. says Oliver.

This allows us to experimentally probe a novel regime of physics that is difficult to access with natural atoms, says Kannan. The effects of the giant atom are extremely clean and easy to observe and understand.

The work appears to have much potential for further research, Kannan adds.

I think one of the surprises is actually the relative ease by which superconducting qubits are able to enter this giant atom regime. he says. The tricks we employed are relatively simple and, as such, one can imagine using this for further applications without a great deal of additional overhead.

Andreas Wallraff, professor of solid-state physics at ETH Zurich, says the research "investigates a piece of quantum physics that is hard or even impossible to fathom for microscopic objects such as electrons or atoms, but that can be studied with macroscopic engineered superconducting quantum circuits. With these circuits, using a clever trick, they are able both to protect their giant atom from decay and simultaneously to allow for coupling two of them coherently. This is very nice work exploring waveguide quantum electrodynamics."

The coherence time of the qubits incorporated into the giant atoms, meaning the time they remained in a quantum state, was approximately 30 microseconds, nearly the same for qubits not coupled to a waveguide, which have a range of between 10 and 100 microseconds, according to the researchers.

Additionally, the research demonstrates two-qubit entangling operations with 94 percent fidelity. This represents the first time researchers have quoted a two-qubit fidelity for qubits that were strongly coupled to a waveguide, because the fidelity of such operations using conventional small atoms is often low in such an architecture. With more calibration, operation tune-up procedures and optimized hardware design, Kannan says, the fidelity can be further improved.

The future of encryption: Getting ready for the quantum computer attack – TechRepublic

PQShield, a spin-out from the UK's Oxford University, is developing advanced cryptographic solutions for hardware, software and communications to protect businesses' data from the quantum threat.

The development of quantum computers poses a cybersecurity problem such as the IT industry has never seen before. All stored data currently deemed secure by modern standards whether that's health records, financial data, customer databases and even critical government infrastructure could, in theory, be cracked by quantum computers, which are capable of effectively short circuiting the encryption we've used to protect that data until now.

Efforts to protect our data from the quantum threat are underway, though whether the issue is being looked at with the urgency it deserves is up for debate. PQShield, a post-quantum cryptography startup spun out of Oxford University, perceives a disconnect between the scale of the threat and the current cyber-readiness of most businesses in 2020, which it is now trying to address.

"The scale of the quantum attack is just too big to imagine," Dr. Ali Kaafarani, research fellow at Oxford's Mathematical Institute and founder of PQShield, tells TechRepublic.

"The most important part of what we're doing is to educate the market."

Kaafarani is a former engineer at Hewlett-Packard Labs and leads a team of 10 full-time quantum cryptographers, from what he estimates to be a worldwide pool of just a hundred or so. The company is busy working on the development of quantum-secure cryptography encryption solutions for hardware, software and communications that will secure information from future risk, yet can be implemented using today's technology.

This comprises a system on chip (SoC) and software development kit that allow companies to create secure messaging applications, protected by a "post-quantum" variant of the Signal cryptographic protocol. Central to PQShield's technology is that it is designed to work with both legacy systems as well as those expected in the years to come, meaning it could offer protection for everything from keyless cars and other connected devices, to data moving to and from cloud servers.

This, Kaafarani explains, is important owing to the fact that post-quantum cryptography cannot be retrospectively implemented meanwhile data encrypted by modern standards remains open to post-quantum threats. "What we're using right now as end-to-end encryption...is secure now, but people can intercept them and steal encrypted data," he says.

"Once they have access to a quantum computer, they can decrypt them, so confidentiality is threatened in retrospect, because whatever is considered confidential now can be decrypted later on."

Kaafarani also perceives an issue with the current attitudes to remediating cyberattacks, which he likens to applying a band-aid to a repeating problem.

"That's why we started PQShield to fill in this gap, to lead the way to a smooth and secure transition to the quantum era. There is a real opportunity here to get things right from the beginning."

The startup recently completed a 5.5m funding round led by VC Firm Kindred Capital and has now secured German engineering company Bosch as its first OEM customer. While the exact details of the deal are still under wraps, Kaafarani says the deal is indicative of the threats businesses are beginning to identify as the age of quantum computing approaches.

"Their hardware may be built to last, but right now, their security isn't," he says.

"If you're designing a car that's going to go on the roads in the next three years, if you're doing security by design, you should be thinking of the next security standards: not the standards that are valid now, but the standards that will be valid in the next five, 10, 15 years," he says.

"Future-proofing is an imperative, just as it is for the banks and agencies that hold so much of our sensitive data."

The United States (US) Department of Energy (DOE) has unveiled a report that lays out a blueprint strategy for the development of a national quantum internet, an Internet based on quantum computing technology that when implemented will be virtually unhacabled.

Notably, a system that communicates using quantum mechanics represents one of the most important technological frontiers of the 21st century. One of the distinctive feature of quantum transmissions is that they are exceedingly difficult to eavesdrop (secretly or stealthily listening to the private conversation/communications) on as information passes between locations, making it (Quantum Internet) a virtually unhackable networks.

In February of this year, scientists from DOEs Argonne National Laboratory in Lemont, Illinois, and the University of Chicago created a 52-mile (83-kilometer) quantum loop in the Chicago suburbs, successfully establishing one of the longest land-based quantum networks in the nation. That network will soon be connected to DOEs Fermilab in Batavia, Illinois, establishing a three-node, 80-mile testbed.

The U.S. Department of Energy s 17 national laboratories will serve as the backbone of the coming quantum internet, which has initial government funding.

Scientists are also exploring how the quantum internet could expedite the exchange of vast amounts of data. If the components can be combined and scaled, society may be at the cusp of a breakthrough in data communication, according to the report.

Moreover, creating networks of ultra-sensitive quantum sensors could allow engineers to better monitor and predict earthquakesa longtime and elusive goalor to search for underground deposits of oil, gas, or minerals. Such sensors could also have applications in health care and imaging.

Corporations Must Step Up to the Plate to Enhance the Security of Cloud Computing – Security Boulevard

Now that weve passed the midpoint in 2020, one thing in the cybersecurity world has become crystal clear: The need for better security within public clouds must be addressed by enterprises once and for all, and that entails cryptography.

No question, enterprises large and small have realized the benefits of rapidly deployable, reasonably priced and extremely scalable public computing infrastructure. According to Forbes, the global cloud computing market will reach $411 billion this year.

But what about the security? Is it up to snuff?

Not really, even though some public cloud purveyors offer some encryption as an option and sometimes by default. This step is hardly foolproof, however, and that should come as no surprise. After all, data in the cloud is stored with a third-party provider and accessed over the internet. This means visibility and control over that dataincluding its securityis limited.

Fact is, cloud service providers treat cloud security risks as a shared responsibility. The good news is that some cloud companies allow clients to encrypt their data before sending it to the cloud, and its becoming increasingly clear that thisor possibly the additional option of adopting a few other proven, state-of-the-art fixes for cloud securityis the preferred route for truly security-conscious enterprises.

That enhanced data encryption in the cloud makes sense began circulating roughly two-and-a-half years ago, when technology and cloud giant Accenture confirmed that it inadvertently left a gigantic store of private data access across four unsecured cloud servers. This exposed highly sensitive passwords and secret decryption keys that could have inflicted considerable damage on the company and its customers.

Since then, misconfigured cloud settings have caused multiple incidents of data exposures in the Amazon Web Services cloud. In addition, a misconfiguration error in Microsofts Azure cloud exposed 250 million technical support accounts. Meanwhile, MVISION Cloud, a unit of McAfee, analyzed the encryption controls offered by more than 12,000 providers and found yet more shortcomings. While 82percent of cloud service providers encrypt data in transit between the user and the cloud service, not even 10percent of cloud providers encrypt data once its stored, MVISION found.

According to CloudPassage, a software-as-a-service purveyor that provides security for private, public and hybrid clouds, one of the worst mistakes made by public cloud companies is having easily hacked administrative credentialsessentially the keys to the kingdom. As it turns out, attackers can execute a breach with a badly configured set of privileged credentialsa common occurrence, unfortunately, when a cloud company cuts corners in a rush to market.

Other mistakes among public crowd companies include exposed data assets, weak network access control and poor event logging, which impedes efforts to detect, contain and analyze compromises in the cloud.

On the bright side, there are companies today that help enterprises adopt cloud encryption. Oneborn out of research done at MITis cybersecurity company PreVeil, whose end-to-end encryption could redefine cloud-based cybersecurity in a way that doesnt interfere with workflows while still enabling popular cloud-based machine-learning applications.

Another company with a different approach to the same end goal is Zscaler, which offers a Secure Web Gateway in the cloud via software-as-a service. No hardware is required. Zscaler decentralizes cybersecurity protection, allowing data to flow back and forth from a public cloud rather than redirecting it to clients own physical data centers.

Another form of cryptography enhances the breadth of the science by offering fresh analytical capabilities as well as securityhomomorphic encryption (HE). HE is attracting more attention from select technology companies such as IBM, Microsoft and Google, and startups such as Enveil, and slowly growing. HE makes it possible to analyze or manipulate encrypted data without revealing the data to anyone, offering huge potential in areas with sensitive personal data such as in financial services or healthcareareas in which the privacy of a person is paramount.

The biggest barrier to widespread adoption of HE is that it is still very slow and so not yet practical for many applications. Nonetheless, company researchers are working diligently to speed up the process by decreasing the required computational overhead.

Microsoft, for example, has created SEAL, a set of encryption libraries that allow computations to be performed directly on encrypted data. SEAL is partnering with companies to build end-to-end encrypted data storage and computation services. Googleanother tech giant that has moved into the fieldlast year unveiled an open-source cryptographic tool similarly focused on analyzing data in its encrypted form with only the insights derived from the analysis visible, not the underlying data itself.

An even more futuristic development that cryptography-minded folks should be aware ofalthough in this case, in a blatantly negative senseis quantum computing, based on the principles of quantum physics.

At least a decade away, ultra-fast quantum computers could perform calculations exponentially faster than classic computersin the wrong hands potentially enabling the destruction of the encryption protecting their data. Fortunately, there is also some good news on this front. The National Institute of Standards and Technology is already pushing researchers to analyze potential problems in this post-quantum era. Meanwhile, IBM has already successfully demonstrated a quantum-proof encryption method it developed.

For now, here are six security tips for companies moving to public or even multi-cloud environments and concerned about cryptography and related security disciplines.

+ Get the basics right.Establish a strategy for multi-cloud encryption and the management of cryptography keys before expanding to more advanced crypto technologies.

+ Leverage encryption as part of your broader IT security efforts.Companies that dont have effective data classification and/or a prioritization program in place tend to struggle with data encryption. Data classification policies and tools facilitate the separation of valuable information that may be targeted from less valuable information.

+ Build in crypto agility.This refers to the capacity for an information security system to adopt an alternative to the original encryption method without significant change to system infrastructure. Be ready to replace or retire your deployed cryptography as needed.

+ Ensure that only authorized users can access data.This is critical to prevent tampering by anyone inside or outside the organization. Audit access controls regularly to ensure their validity.

+ Develop robust plans for business continuity and disaster recovery of crypto keys.Inventory keys and cryptographic libraries so you can recover your data alongside your protection mechanisms.

+ Make sure your cryptography is integrated intothe DevSecOps world.Ensure that DevOps teams choose crypto libraries that follow secure coding practices.

In the final analysis, encryption is tough stuff, but extremely important in the world of security. Companies that embrace it and incorporate it properly are taking an additional big step to protect their data and their reputation in a world inundated by embarrassing, hurtful and costly cyber-breaches.

Now that cloud computing has introduced encryption widely, security-minded companies are under growing pressure to keep the ball rolling and help move on to next steps.

Bonnie Whitmore Searches For Perspective With "Right/Wrong" (premiere + interview) – PopMatters

Bonnie Whitmore's upcoming album, Last Will and Testament, releases on 2 October and it's a powerful and thought-provoking follow-up to 2016's Fuck With Sad Girls. There's a danger with topical songwriters that their material will become dated and although Whitmore tapes into the zeitgeist here, the material full transcends the moment in which it arrives. The subject matter ranges from a friend's suicide (the title track), to the 2015 terrorist attacks in Paris ("None of My Business) to rape culture ("Asked for It"). There's also a breathtaking rendition of Centro-Matic's "Flashes and Cables" that may very well supplant the original. In all, Last Will and Testament is a confident, necessary statement from an artist whose time has come.

Also included on the LP is "Right/Wrong", which Whitmore co-wrote with co-producer Scott Davis. "He has two kids, [under ten], and I asked him how he discussed divisions in our country with them," she notes. Her mind turned to a television icon of the past, though she realized her view didn't necessarily jibe with his. "I was actually thinking about Mr. Rogers when we were writing the song. But I don't think I'm a nice enough person to be Mr. Rogers."

Another familiar figure from her childhood ultimate provided some inspiration: Miss Frizzle from The Magic School Bus. "Miss Frizzle had this magic school bus, and the kids would go on these field trips. In order to learn about the anatomy, she would shrink the bus, and it would go into one of the kids, through the nose. You'd follow it around the body and learn about all kinds of stuff: Science and she'd tell kids, 'Go out there and experience life. Make messes!'" Whitmore recalls. "She always had this attitude of, 'Don't be afraid of adventure.' She wasn't necessarily just love and kindness like Mr. Rogers was, but she really would push boundaries, take something that might have seemed scary and turn it into something to be enjoyed. I always found her inspirational in that regard."

"So, in writing that song, we thought about what questions we wanted to ask people when things are so divided. The first verse starts with 'Who do you want to be?' Then, 'Where do you want to go' and 'What do you want to say?' I'm asking my audience. I'm not preaching to them. I'm genuinely asking them the question because I want them to try to answer it."

"Right/Wrong", like much of Last Will and Testament feels like one of those songs that have always existed. Taking a page from classic music of the 1960s and 1970s, it sinks its hooks into the listener early, not letting them go until well after the last notes have floated into the ether. But its lyrics ask much more of the listener than the average song, and they are ultimately one of the reasons we find ourselves returning to the track, to seek answers to the questions which it asks, and to bask in the comforting glow it provides. It is anthemic without being bombastic, thought-provoking without being didactic.

What was the process for writing this album?

This record is a kind of sequel to Fuck With Sad Girls. When I went in to make that record, I wanted to have songs that were personalized stories of mine. I'd been trying to write songs that seemed sellable, and I feel like with the first two, I was trying to make the perfect Americana records. I wasn't necessarily getting where I wanted to. I had this epiphany that if I was going to continue making music, I wanted to include songs that included some of my vulnerabilities. I wanted to be more upfront with my depression and things of that nature.

It seemed to go really well for me. Writing a song like "Fuck With Sad Girls" is the reason I ended up going on tour with James McMurtry, who is a personal hero of mine. That gave me a push to put out this record with these kinds of songs. A lot of them are ones that I've had for a long time, "Asked For It", especially.

That's a good one.

I wrote it back when [former US Representative from Missouri, Todd Akin] was talking about "legitimate rape" [in 2012]. That was what inspired the song. When I tried to perform it, it was like the air was being sucked out of the room. People just weren't ready for a pop song about rape culture. With the #MeToo movement and the culture being more open about discussing these kinds of things, with people speaking up about what they think is wrong, broken, or needs to be fixed, [it seemed like the right time to release it].

One out of four women has been sexually assaulted or raped. That's a hard number to get through to yourself, especially when you have a society that doesn't want to talk about it. I've gotten a lot of inspiration from people like Bren Brown, who talks about shame and vulnerability and not being ruled by the fear that you have those things because that just gives it power.

Yeah.

I always felt that if I could write songs that helped the conversation start, then I was doing my part to try and help heal.

That strong really struck me because I don't know that I've heard what you're saying there said in that way on a record before.

It's one thing to think something. It's another to say it out loud. It becomes a totally different thing when you are being heard saying it. I make it an audience participation song at my shows. I ask people to repeat the phrase, "asked for it". By the end of the song, I feel like a lot of people who hadn't thought about it before don't want to say it anymore. That was the point. You understand that we shouldn't be blaming the victim. We should be able to allow the victim to communicate with us, even though it's really painful to hear it. It's the only way that we can get past these things.

I'm so delighted that the Chicks have a new record out. I've always been a huge fan of theirs, and when I first heard "Gaslighter", tears came out of my eyes. I hadn't heard their voices on the radio for so long. I didn't realize how detrimental that was for me. I play in Texas, I grew up here, and when I would go and play these podunk shows in rural places, I'd have a whole bunch of redneck, good ol' boys to shut up and sing and "Don't play that fucking Dixie Chicks music" and all that stuff.

I thought, "If you don't want me to talk about stuff, I'm going to sing about it." That's what I really try to do with these songs, which is to be able to have a conversation within the song.

I was also really struck by the song "Fine".

That's the first co-write I did with Jaimee Harris. She's an incredible singer-songwriter. We had this shared tendency to be non-committal sometimes. I had just gotten out of a relationship, and she was in a different place, but we discovered that we had similar approaches in terms of how we approach relationships. To me, it's about wanting to check in and see where you are and have some sort of understanding instead of having some things left unsaid.

As a woman, I'm always checking to see if everyone's OK. "What's going on? Is there something you need? Are you happy right now?" [Laughs.] It was such an easy co-write. Once we wrote it, we said, "This is pop gold." And I always like to say that there's a difference between "I am fine" and "I will be fine."

There's a thing that's been going on in the pandemic: I enjoy the solitude, but I have to check in with myself so that I don't become a total mess.

I remember having a day, I think, in April, where it was starting to set in, what this was and what it really meant. I was having one of those days where I meant to wash my face, and I grabbed hair conditioner. "What's wrong with you, Whitmore?" I did another thing that seemed really dumb, and then there was a click in my head, "Oh, that's your depression right there. It's OK."

Once I can call it out, then it's a lot easier. I think a lot of depression is just picking at yourself and tearing your self down so that no one else has to do it for you. "That's why I'm feeling angry right now. That's where this is coming from." Once you can identify it, see where it's coming from, it's not the villain that it was.

Tell me about covering Centro-Matic's "Flashes and Cables".

I grew up in Denton, and Centro-Matic was the band that I was in love with in high school. We used to have a thing called the Fry Street Fair. I wasn't old enough to get tickets because I think you had to be over 18. We would crawl onto the roof of this art supply store and see behind where the band was. You could watch the show outside of the festival but still be part of it. That was the first time I saw Centro-Matic play.

I saw them in Austin on their farewell tour. Then I also went up to Denton for their final show at Dan's Silverleaf. That's my original church. Music venues are churches to me, more so than just places to get drunk. It was just such an amazing, surreal moment, just being around these people who were completely in love with this band. There was so much joy, so many tears. It was such a beautiful thing.

"Flashes and Cables" seemed to be the perfect added thing to put on there. I did want to have a cover song on the album like I did with Fuck With Sad Girls. I was so glad that Will [Johnson, formerly of Centro-Matic] sang on it.

The Umbrella Academy cast teases time-bending season 2 | EW.com – Entertainment Weekly

A hero crawls across the ground, exhausted beyond endurance. A vicious storm rages around him, and hope seems lost. Suddenly, a ghost appears; an apparition of someone this hero loved. The hero reaches out his hand, croaking, Ben...Ben

Hoth this is not. Though reminiscent of The Empire Strikes Back, this scene happened on the Toronto set of The Umbrella Academy season 2. The hero in question is Klaus Hargreeves (Robert Sheehan), and he and his siblings are once again trying to prevent disaster. Nothing theyve tried has managed to calm the super-storm raging around them. Thats when Ben (Justin H. Min) appears. Ben died years ago, so Klaus, whos a medium, is the only one of the surviving siblings who can see and talk to him. It's caused a lot of bickering between them, and Klaus is increasingly annoyed at being Bens only translator to the living. But now, at a moment of crisis, maybe Ben is the only one with the power to save the world.

But wait. Theres another urgent question, and filming temporarily stops so that the producers and crew can debate it: Would a ghosts hair move in stormy wind?

There are arguments for both sides. Some think Bens hair should move in the wind so it looks consistent with the other characters in the scene. Others argue that a ghosts body is inherently intangible, and therefore would not be affected by mortal winds plus, Mins hair is so perfectly coiffed that its hard to imagine any force on Earth moving it. Because Umbrella Academy showrunner Steve Blackman isnt on set to mediate this debate, they decide to film it both ways (some takes utilize a giant fan blowing in the background; other takes dont) so he can pick later.

I'm on set a lot, but I have to go back and forth to L.A., and so I get those questions, Blackman tells EW months later. Sometimes I'm like, Are you really calling me about this? But then I realize it's a really good point. There is a logic we have to make true because if we don't, someone's going to call us out on it. It was a long debate about whether a ghosts hair can be moved. In the final version, I opted not to have the hair move. But I welcome them to call me for any of those questions. They're always fun to figure out.

Would wind blow a ghosts hair? was only one of many dilemmas that had to be worked through by Blackman and the other writers of the Netflix series as they went about constructing season 2. First, and most pressing: Where the hell did the Hargreeves siblings go when they blinked out of existence at the end of season 1 just after one of them blew up the moon, sending a bunch of lunar asteroids on a fatal collision course with the Earth? Even more importantly, when did they go?

Years before it was a Netflix show, The Umbrella Academy was a comic book written by My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way, illustrated by Brazilian artist Gabriel B, and published by Dark Horse. It first landed in 2007, a year before the one-two punch of Iron Man and The Dark Knight gave birth to a new, streamlined 21st-century superhero zeitgeist. By contrast, The Umbrella Academy was unafraid to be weird, colorful, and unique. It wore distinct cultural influences proudly on its sleeve while also using them in new ways. If you were a 2000s emo kid brought in by the MCR connection, The Umbrella Academy might also send you off looking for Wes Andersons film The Royal Tenenbaums or writer Grant Morrisons cult-favorite 90s Doom Patrol comics to find the sources for these flavors.

In his introduction to the first collected edition of Umbrella comics, Apocalypse Suite, Morrison himself coined the delightful term necrodelic to describe the aesthetic overlap with MCR music videos like Welcome to the Black Parade. Imagine making a debut so impressive that your biggest inspiration is immediately one of your first fans. Thats what a kick in the teeth The Umbrella Academy was, fresh and fully-formed right from the get-go.

The series further distinguished itself from Marvel and DC superhero fare by being self-contained a new, original universe born just as so many comics and their spin-off TV and projects became limited to just two major worlds. You only had to read a few comics to get the scope of Way and Bs world, which of course created a huge thirst for more. A year after Apocalypse Suite came the second arc, Dallas, which put the JFK assassination through the Umbrella Academy filter (one representative scene finds a monkey dressed as Marilyn Monroe singing Happy Birthday JFK-style). Dallas deepened character relationships, gave more texture to the world of the Umbrella Academy, and sprinkled many hints at future story lines. But then it was followed by... silence.

Way returned to music, making two more MCR albums (leading to a blizzard of tour dates that made writing comics on the bus way harder than before) and then a solo record after the bands 2013 breakup. B teamed up with his brother Fbio Moon for beautiful non-superhero comics like Daytripper, which won a prestigious Eisner Award in 2011. A full decade passed from the release of Dallas to Dark Horses 2018 announcement that the long-anticipated third volume of The Umbrella Academy, titled Hotel Oblivion, was finally on the way... at just about the same time Netflix was announcing a long-awaited TV adaptation.

Season 1 landed on the streaming platform at the zenith of MCU superhero culture, just a few short months before Avengers: Endgame smashed box office records. Way and B were on board as executive producers, which reassured devout readers. And by exchanging Joss Whedon-style quips for intimate character moments and focusing on family dynamics more than world-saving shenanigans, The Umbrella Academy has carved out its own space and a giant fandom. The second seasons release this week seems fueled by its own galaxy of hype and excitement no Comic-Con launch required.

At its heart, Umbrella is about a dysfunctional family of misfit superheroes, trained to exploit their powers in service of justice, but all a little underdeveloped when it comes to basic love and kindness.

Each member of the Umbrella Academy was born with extraordinary powers at the exact same moment across the world to women who mysteriously hadnt previously been pregnant. Forty-three such children were born this way, but these seven were the ones adopted by Sir Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore in the show), an eccentric billionaire industrialist who is also probably a space alien (the fates of the other 36 children have not yet been revealed). As a sign of how cold and results-oriented their childhood was, the kids go by three different naming systems. When they were young, Hargreeves gave them numerical designations to signify a chain of command and their relative importance to him: Numbers One (the leader and golden child) through Seven (the supposed mediocrity, the spare). As they grew, they also each got superhero monikers and civilian names, except for Number Five (Aidan Gallagher), who time-traveled away from home as a kid so never got past the numerical stage. The comic favors their superhero codenames: Spaceboy, Kraken, Rumor, Seance, Horror, and (eventually) the White Violin. The show prefers their human names Luther (Tom Hopper), Diego (David Castaeda), Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman), Klaus (Sheehan), Ben (Min), and Vanya (Ellen Page) signifying a preference for their relatable familial dramas over some of the book's more surreal superhero spectacle.

Season 1 of the TV show mostly followed the arc of Apocalypse Suite reunited after the death of Sir Reginald, the grown-up Hargreeves siblings have to put aside their differences in time to stop Vanya from bringing about a prophesied ragnarok but made important changes.

Casting was a big part of this, of course. Gallagher was 14 years old when filming began. Now 16 and growing fast, he displays maturity and wisdom beyond his years. The kind of person your grandma might call an old soul, Gallagher has the uncanny ability to believably inhabit Number Five, a character who looks like a young teen but carries the weight of decades spent alone in an apocalyptic wasteland. Sheehan, a hypnotic speaker whose sentences are peppered with unexpectedly enlightening references and asides, often arrived at seemingly on the spot, was already an online fan favorite from Misfits, another unique take on superhero TV. They make it seem like Number Five and Klaus walked right off the page as three-dimensional characters. Castaeda played Diego less like a cranky vigilante and more like a romantic hero (it helped that his police partner, Patch, was changed from a monkey to a human, played by actress Ashley Madekwe), while Raver-Lampman and Page brought out new sides of Allison and Vanya, not least their complicated sister relationship.

Music was another way that the show honored the comic while taking full advantage of the TV medium. The Umbrella Academy has always been imbued with music thanks to Ways experience and sensibilities. Allison is a celebrity whose voice can compel other people rumor them a power that can easily backfire and causes deep ambivalence about her fame and influence (perhaps that explains why Way, with his pop singer background, told EW in 2018 that Allison is his favorite character to write). In the premiere episode, each Hargreeves sibling dances to the same song (Tiffanys version of I Think Were Alone Now) in their own childhood bedroom, unaware that the others are doing the same. The season ends with an apocalypse triggered by Vanyas furious violin playing. In season 2, each fight is soundtracked by a different pop song, ranging in time from early Backstreet Boys to a cover of Billie Eilish. Blackman tells EW that he would shuffle through his music library before writing scenes, looking for the perfect soundtrack to a battle or an intense emotional exchange.

The biggest difference between the show and comic, though, came at the end of season 1. In the original story, the team manages to avert disaster at the last minute when Klaus uses his telekinetic powers to stop debris from shattering the planet. No such thing occurred in the adaptation. The team came together (including Bens ghost!), but it wasnt enough. The world did, in fact, explode, and the Hargreeves siblings were only able to survive thanks to Number Five activating his time-travel powers at the last moment but that also didnt go quite according to plan.

The opening scene of season 2 shows where the family ended up: 1960s Dallas. While the Dallas arc of The Umbrella Academy comic sent the team to JFKs time for a couple issues, the show expands it into a season-long period piece. Each character is dropped out of the time vortex at a slightly different date in the early part of the decade; Five is the last to materialize, and immediately discovers that his siblings actions in the past have brought about a new apocalypse way ahead of schedule.

In Gallaghers words, The opening shot is just like, Okay, where the hell did we end up? Where are my siblings? Why is there a tank here? Oh s---, I'm in the '60s and there are nukes falling from the sky! So it's a wonderful way to launch into our season.

Gallagher continues, Everyone's got this new and really interesting arc for their characters. [Hes] becoming a lot more personable, but coinciding with that, he's got this huge problem of a completely new apocalypse happening several decades before an apocalypse even naturally occurred in the timeline. So yeah, in season 2, he just crawls out of that insanity and more into his anxiety.

As his first step in figuring out how to avert this disaster, Five seeks out Luther. But the one-time Number One isnt much interested in being a leader anymore. He failed in his lifelong mission to save the world (and, by extension, fulfill his dads expectations of him), on top of learning that his years-long mission to the moon was a ruse concocted by Sir Reginald to keep him occupied. He lost his human body and replaced it with a gorilla one all for no grand purpose.

Luther's holding a lot of weight, says Hopper, who previously headed up Starzs Black Sails. The fact that the world ended, and he did bad things in the process of getting there like locking Vanya up, thats all weighing on him. He's taking out all that angst into the role he now has in the past, which is, he's ended up basically working as a henchman, an underground cage fighter.

Luthers found a new father figure in the form of a local nightclub owner (John Kapelos) who's all too happy to have a strapping superman fight for him. He and his siblings are inserting themselves into history and stepping on all kinds of butterflies. They might end up destroying the world before America can even get to the moon at the end of the decade. They're going to ruin the f---ing timeline, Castaeda says, and only Five seems concerned about getting them all together while keeping time and space intact.

As classic time travel hypotheticals go, Would you stop the JFK assassination? is like the light-side counterweight to Would you kill baby Hitler? Diego is certainly tempted to try to change history for the better, from the moment he lands in 1962 and sees Kennedy speaking on television. According to Castaeda, this experience reminds Diego of a memory from his childhood when he noticed Sir Reginald react emotionally (a rare occurrence) to a mention of the JFK assassination. Just as Luther is turning away from the memory of their father, Diego is trying to find a connection.

Diego doesn't actually want to leave, Castaeda says. He wants to stay in this timeline to fix some things. He has a clear thought of, You're not taking us back. You left us here. Great. Stay away. I'm going to fix some things here. I think all of us are in that mindset.

To be fair to the Umbrella Academy, its not that theyre entirely cavalier about the fate of the world. Its just that many of them were thrown into the deep end of the past by themselves and have to find ways to survive. This is especially challenging for Allison, who gets dumped in the Jim Crow South, still lacking her powerful voice (damaged by Vanya at the end of season 1), and now made a target because shes Black. This is a significant change from the comic, where Allison is depicted as white and even goes undercover as Jackie Kennedy at one point.

She has suddenly found herself in a Southern state in the '60s and she's a woman of color, Raver-Lampman says. The rules are very different for her than they have been her whole life. She is now not allowed to do certain things or be seen in certain places with certain people. That is the rudest of awakenings for her.

Fortunately, the 60s were not just a time of oppression, but revolt as well. Shortly after running afoul of a whites only sign and the racist cops who enforce it, Allison is taken in by civil rights activists, and even finds love with local movement leader Raymond Chestnut (Yusuf Gatewood). While Diego sets out to use his abilities and knowledge to save the president, Allison cant help but wonder if her own powers (once recovered) might help the cause.

Allison knows... the ability to change people's minds and opinions is a huge power. The outcome of the civil rights movement could be completely different, but she knows how tricky her power is and what the backlash of that could be on that kind of a scale, Raver-Lampman says. In the immediate moment she might be saving someone's life, but what's the backlash of that for [her daughter] Claire in the 21st century? There is so much more at risk than there ever has been for her.

Vanya doesnt even remember the apocalypse she kick-started due to a bout of amnesia. Thanks to the help of Sissy (Marin Ireland), who takes her in after accidentally hitting her with a car, Vanya also falls into an anachronistic affair. As Vanya and Sissy grow closer, they develop a relationship much more powerful than the emotionally abusive one Vanya found herself in last year with Harold (John Magaro), but also run up against a culture of homophobia.

She's a very different person, Page says of season 2 Vanya. You see someone who's much more comfortable in their skin. I think in many ways, what happened at the end of the season with Vanya, I guess that was not great for the world, but for her, it was the ultimate release a way of coming to terms with so much in her life. This is the step after that, where she goes on a journey discovering and exploring who she is in a whole new way.

For Klaus, finding himself a few years ahead when he time-traveled to the Vietnam War in season 1 means his lover, Dave (Cody Ray Thompson), is still alive he hasnt yet signed up to fight. Maybe Klaus can save him. Klaus and Ben arrive first of all their siblings, in 1960, and while he waits for a moment of opportunity, when he knows where Dave will be and might be able to intervene Klaus ends up leading a proto-hippie cult.

We all have a kind of a nostalgic facsimile of what the 60s were. All of the iconography that has survived the 60s, we all put that into a hodgepodge in our brains and go, 'This is what the 60s was.' Thats what Klaus sort of does, Sheehan explains. He goes back and embodies that thing to a bunch of people who don't understand what that is, but he kind of gets the jump on it. He takes credit for it. He takes credit for a lot of things.

One thing Klaus keeps taking credit for is Bens presence. An invisible ghostly brother sure helps Klaus prove his mystical bona fides to his new cultish followers. But as Klaus luxuriates in his newfound popularity, Ben strains against his restrictions.

This season it was really important for us to try and establish the agency and independence of Ben as a character, Min says, even though he is still tethered to Klaus.

Min continues, I think there are things that Ben has always wanted to do and has always wanted to pursue.

After all the individual journeys the siblings go on this season, finding out things about themselves and their history, it eventually comes time to stop the apocalypse again. Theres that nuclear disaster Number Five walks into at the beginning of the season, and also that super-storm that perhaps only Ben can stop. They say the definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different result, but that doesnt stop the Umbrella Academy from trying to save the world because only if they succeed in doing so will it be possible for them to go back to the future.

Adventurous touristscould soon travel to the edge of space in a British-designed balloon for 95,000as part of an ambitious new project.

Florida-based Space Perspective wants to use an advanced balloon to take people and research payloads into the stratosphere, providing 360 degree views of space.

The capsule was designed by London business PriestmanGoode. "We looked at all the different elements that would make the experience not just memorable, but truly comfortable as well," said Nigel Goode, the cofounder of PriestmanGoode.

"We wanted to make sure that passengers would be able to get 360-degree unobstructed views and that we created an efficient space that would enable them to move around during the journey."

The balloon will have room for eight passengers as well as a pilot, andfeatures seats as well as a bar and a bathroom.

Space Perspective reportedly plans to charge customers around $125,000 (95,000) for the six-hour trip to the edge of space in the capsule. Passengers will float 100,000 feet above the earth before beginning the two-hour return journey back to Earth.

The first un-crewed test flight will include a suite of research payloads and is scheduled for early 2021 from the Shuttle Landing Facility at NASA's KennedySpaceCenter in Florida.

The company is part of a number of businesses hoping to attract tourists willing to pay significant sums for trips to space.

Richard Bransons Virgin Galactic has sold 600 tickets for trips to space, with most of the planned trips costing between $200,000 and $250,000 per customer. The business reported a $54m loss earlier this week.

SpaceX, the space travel company run by Elon Musk, also announced plans to launch tourists into space on a Crew Dragon spacecraft earlier this year.

Meet Spaceport City, a Floating Transportation Hub Concept for Space Travel – Robb Report

We may not be ready to shuttle off for regular trips to space just yet, but thats not stopping one group of designers from imagining our future here on the ground. Newly unveiled plans for a floating space hub show just how spectacular even the earth-bound portion of those starry treks might be.

Devised by the Space Port Japan Association (SPJ)in coordination with Dentsu, Canaria and Noizthe striking digital renderings of Spaceport City imagine a new kind of transportation hub focused on the takeoff and landing of space-bound vessels. But what sets the layout apart is its integration with other forms of transportation more commonly experienced today, from cars to boats. The proposed hub would be built above the water and extend out from a expansive cityscape.

The Spaceport City would also serve as a kind of business center. The sheer amount of square footage makes the venue ripe for holding conferences, staging fashion shows and housing businesses related to space engineering or education.

Space landing pads aside, the structure has a flowing, tarp-like roof composed of solar panels that provide renewable energy, which also extend to plazas for arrivals and departures. Inside, the space is broken up by large spheres allowing for a kind of zoning without interrupting the buildings continuity. This means its many disparate entities can enjoy its use simultaneously but still create necessary divides for those with serious security measures.

But other than just providing the building with power, the many hills and valleys created by the roof serve other humanitarian purposes. They help form areas for open-air gardens, patios and even small farms to further ramp up the projects sustainability while also forming additional covered public space below. For family members looking to wave goodbye before a loved one departs, theyll be able to view launches from lounges located in an upper deck on each pierall while taking in a view of the water beyond.

Out of the Disney Vault: Revisiting Mars and Beyond /Film – /FILM

(Welcome toOut of the Disney Vault, where we explore the unsung gems and forgotten disasters currently streaming on Disney+.)

These days, Disney has become the king of acquiring IPs and turning them into the cash cows of popular entertainment. But once upon a time, they also dared to collaborate with the top scientific minds of the time, and make art that could show us what we could achieve if we set our minds to it like kickstart the Space Race.

With everyone stuck at home and with the future not looking particularly bright, its the perfect time for some good old-fashioned Disney optimism. And what better way to experience that optimism than with a pseudo-documentary that uses animation to imagine the strange lifeforms that could live on Mars?

The result is Mars and Beyond, part of a series of three documentaries that not only featured some of the best animation in TV at the time, but also helped sell the American public on space travel.

In 1954, Disney debuted a television series to showcase the still-in-construction Disneyland and its various lands. But when it came to Tomorrowland, there was no existing material that could showcase what the land was about. So one of Disneys Nine Old Men, veteran animator Ward Kimball, set out to direct a series of documentary programs about the possibilities and wonders of human space travel.

The result was a series of programs aired between 1955 and 1957, partly based on articles in Colliers magazine authored by German scientist Wernher von Braun and other rocket scientists meant to detail von Brauns plans for manned spaceflight and sell Americans on space exploration at a time before NASA even existed.

The first episode, titled Man in Space, was nominated for an Oscar and followed the history of rocket science and what humans would have to face in space. It even ends with a call for the U.S. government to create a space agency of its own. The second, Man and the Moon, focused on humans fascination with the moon, as well as details of a plan to send humans to the lunar surface.

The last of the programs came a mere month after the launch of Sputnik 2 and it took a different approach, showcasing the history of astronomy as well as the origin of life on Earth. Mars and Beyond focuses on our fascination with Mars and how it influenced science fiction stories for decades, as well as wild speculation on what a trip to Mars would look like and what we could find there.

Compared to the first two programs, Mars and Beyond is more light-hearted and relies a lot more on animation, which ultimately works in its favor. Though the science is spotty and outdated, relying on what scientists theorized about Mars at the time (like saying the Martian surface had canals that irrigated vast forests), the animation makes this a highly entertaining, trippy, and imaginative film.

Indeed, the animation is atypical for Disney films of the time. There are striking images of vast landscapes with towering behemoths and all sorts of lifeforms that could spawn their own sci-fi franchises. The film imagines the type of life that could be found on Mars, from giant plants that travel across the land looking for sustenance to silicon-based crystallized structures. This is more likeFantasia, the pink elephant scene of Dumbo, and even German expressionismthan the type of films Disney was making at the time. This section makes the entire film worth it, as even though its a big departure from the science-based approach of the rest of the documentary, the imagination and visuals on display makes it feel just like when you first watched the cantina scene in the original Star Wars, like youd just unlocked a world of possibility.

Another aspect of the film that feels rare in 2020 is the extended segment devoted to the unapologetically Darwinian version of the history of the evolution of life on Earth, something you dont see every day on a major TV network. Seeing such a big company go to such lengths to not only entertain by seemingly giving the animators carte balance to illustrate whatever their minds could come up with, but also educate the population so unabashedly, feels as hopeful as the future that Mars and Beyond imagines.

Whether a coincidence or a direct product of these films, NASA was founded and the U.S. space program began shortly after Man in Space premiered. Indeed, its been reported that President Eisenhower even called Disney to compliment him on Man in Space the morning after it aired, and to request a copy that could be shown to top space-related officials in the Pentagon.

Curiously enough, the description laid out in Mars and Beyond regarding how a trip to Mars would work and the technology necessary to make that trip ended up being very similar to the technology that allowed the real Curiosity Mars Rover to land on the Red Planet.

Elsewhere, the films became the centerpiece for what Disney envisioned for the Tomorrowland section of Disneyland, and it kickstarted a decades-long love for space travel from the company. The TWA Moonliner at the center of the park was derived from Man in Space, and though Walt Disney passed away before the moon landing, the live television broadcast of the Apollo 11 mission was screened at Tomorrowland for guests, and dozens of space-related rides would open at Disney theme parks throughout the decades.

Though the astonishing vision of Martian life from Mars and Beyond didnt turn out to be true, you can now experience this entertaining, educational, and visually stunning film on Disney+. Its worth it, especially right now.

SpaceX-Launched Astronauts Set to Return from Space Stationg | KFI – KFI AM 640

HAWTHORNE (CNS) - Two astronauts are scheduled to return to Earth today from their historic mission to the International Space Station in a capsule built and launched by Hawthorne-based SpaceX.

Weather permitting, splashdown is scheduled for 11:48 a.m. PDT time in the Gulf of Mexico, with the location changed from the Atlantic Ocean due to the approach of Hurricane Isaias toward Florida. The recovery boat departed its port at 9:20 a.m. East Coast time Sunday to stage for recovery operations in the Gulf, according to NASA.

Mission controllers were keeping a close watch on the weather, but as of Sunday morning, the operation was still expected to go on as scheduled.

Astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley were aboard the space station since May 31, the day after SpaceX's historic launch from Cape Canaveral in Florida, the first manned launch from U.S. soil since the space shuttle program was retired in 2011.

Their trip in SpaceX's Crew Dragon spacecraft -- named Endeavour -- was technically a demonstration flight, showing off the capabilities of the

ship as NASA advances private partnerships to revive U.S. space travel.

On Saturday, Johnson Space Center announced on Twitter that the astronauts were headed home, saying, 62 days on board,'' 1024 Earth orbits,'' Saw 1 visiting vehicle leave & 1 arrive,'' 114 hours of research'' and 4 spacewalks for @AstroBehnken with @Astro_SEAL.''

Hurley tweeted, It was an honor and privilege to be part of Expedition 63. Thanks to @Astro_SEAL , Anatoly, & @ivan_mks63 for making our stay on @Space_Station an incredible experience. Now it's time to finish our DM-2 test flight in order to pave the way for future Dragon crews. Go Endeavour!''

The launch and subsequent autonomous docking with the space station have seemingly gone off without a flaw, but the mission has one more major step.

We're watching (forecasts) closely, mostly to maintain awareness and see the trends, and understand what the timeline would be if our recovery out of the water, for example, was delayed a little bit,'' Behnken said Friday from the space station during a NASA news briefing. But we have confidence that the teams on the ground are of course watching that much more closely than we are.

We don't control the weather, and we know we can stay up here longer -- there's more chow, and I know the space station program has more work that we can do for the (principal investigators) and other folks who have sent science up to the space station,'' he said.

Behnken said he and Hurley spent the last day preparing for the trip, working through the onboard training that will refamiliarize us with the splashdown activities, what our responsibilities will be, the things that we'll monitor.''

But even before their mission is completed, SpaceX is already deep into planning for the next one. Assuming there are no glitches with the remainder of Hurley and Behnken's demonstration mission, dubbed Demo-2, the company will move ahead with Crew Dragon's first operational mission.''

That mission will launch four astronauts -- Victor Glover, Mike Hopkins, Shannon Walker and Soichi Noguchi -- to the space station, sometime in late September.

Lots Of Idiots In Private Boats Swarmed Where The SpaceX Dragon Capsule Splashed Down From The ISS – Jalopnik

There hasnt been a splashdown of an American crewed space capsule since the Apollo capsule from the Apollo-Soyuz joint U.S.-Soviet Union space mission in 1975, at least not until yesterday, when astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley returned to Earth from the International Space Station in orbit, splashing down just off the coast of Pensacola, Florida. They were met by recovery teams, and, as an unexpected bonus, by a bunch of dipshits in private boats who got in the way of recovery operations and could have placed themselves in danger. Welcome to Florida!

The SpaceX recovery vessel Go Navigator was dispatched to recover the capsule, scorched from its cooking in the heat of reentry but otherwise undamaged. The capsule was floating in the water for about 30 minutes before being recovered, and during that time a number of private boats made a beeline for the capsule, according to NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine.

While its very easy to understand the temptation of wanting to get as close as possible to the capsule, its a real problem for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that it interferes with the recovery teams, and there are real dangers to onlookers as capsules often vent toxic gases after splashing down.

In fact, the recovery team detected nitrous tetroxideused as a propellant for the Dragons maneuvering rocketsin the air around the capsule and as such had to wait for the fumes to dissipate before removing the astronauts.

One boat, in particular, has gained a lot of attention because of how close it got to the capsule and the prominent TRUMP 2020" flag it was flying:

The Coast Guard had broadcast a Notice to Mariners about hazardous operations happening in those specified boundaries on July 29, though because the landing zone was past the 12-nautical mile distance from the shore, the Coast Guard could not establish an official safety zone, according to a statement from the Coast Guard.

As a result of not being able to make an official safety zone that boaters could be forbidden from entering,

... numerous boaters ignored the Coast Guard crews requests and decided to encroach the area, putting themselves and those involved in the operation in potential danger.

So, while not strictly illegal, the actions of the boaters coming so close to the recovery efforts put everyones safety at risk and interfered with recovery operations.

NASA Administrator Bridenstine was understanding of the interest of the onlookers but made it clear this would need to be resolved in the future:

I will tell you its a beautiful sunny day and a lot of boaters were out there and they were certainly intrigued. I think all of America was very anxious to see the capsule land in the water, but yeah, its something that we need to do better next time.

Perhaps an official observers area could be set up, so the people who want to watch up close (which sure seems cool) could without getting in the way of doing anything stupid that puts everyone at risk?

Come on, boat-owning people. Dont fuck up space travel for us.

The truth about Tom Cruise’s $200 million space movie – Looper

Back in May of 2020, Cruise revealed that he was in talks with Musk to develop a film shot entirely in space, but this expensive development means this project could become a reality soon. After Musk reignited American space travel late that month with the SpaceX launch from Florida, shooting two American astronauts into space, Liman and Cruise brought the controversial figure on board for their film.

Though the project clearly hasn't taken shape beyond Universal's enormous financial promise, audiences have every reason to believe that Cruise and Liman fully intend to move ahead with this film. It simply remains to be seen when this film could actually go into production, even beyond the enormous technical hurdle of launching Cruise into space to film it. As Deadline reports, McQuarrie and Cruise are currently working on Mission: Impossible 7, so it may be a while.

Nobody can doubt Cruise's sheer commitment, though, especially when you consider the major stunts he's already pulled off. Among other high octane acts, Cruise has scaled the Burj Khalifa in Dubai and hung from helicopters and planes for the Mission: Impossible franchise, all of which he pulled off without a stunt double.

With the coronavirus crisis preventing most film production from resuming right now, there's not a lot of information about Cruise's next film, but as the star prepares to head beyond Earth, we'll keep you updated as best as we can.
