Cloud computing has become one of the hottest markets for tech stocks, as many companies have moved their focus from hardware-based products to cloud-based services. This shift in the industry has not only created a lot of new, fast-growing companies that focus solely on cloud services, but it has also helped reinvigorate older tech companies.

Of course, not all cloud companies are experiencing the same growth, and finding the right ones for your stock portfolio with great long-term potential can be an overwhelming task. That's why a few Motley Fool contributors have compiled this list of top cloud computing stocks for you to buy right now. Read on to find out why Twilio (NYSE:TWLO), Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT), and Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) made the cut.

Brian Withers (Twilio): Twilio might not be a household name, but you've probably experienced its software and not even realized it. You might have received a phone call from your Lyft driver, an SMS text from Airbnb providing updates on your booking status, or a phone call to confirm your concert tickets are still available to sell on StubHub's marketplace. All of these events were powered by Twilio's cloud platform that helps companies integrate communications capabilities into their existing applications.

Founder and CEO Jeff Lawson said that before Twilio, the process to build software-driven messaging capabilities was fragile, slow, and expensive. Companies would have to connect to a network provider, set up a communications data center, adapt existing applications by writing custom code, and likely hire high-priced consultants to integrate it all together. Once it was built, the maintenance and scaling headaches were just the beginning for this complex setup. Twilio has simplified all of this. Software developers can access its powerful communications Super Network of 25 cloud data centers in nine different regions with simple application programming interfaces that can be embedded into an organization's existing software applications.

Twilio makes most of its money (75%) by taking a tiny cut of every text, email, phone call, and video message on its network. The remaining 25% of revenue is driven by large customers who contract to pay subscription fees for unlimited usage of Twilio's products. This usage-based model powered a 51% compound annual growth rate over the last three fiscal years (not including the SendGrid acquisition) and has continued to drive strong growth of 57% and 46% for Q1 and Q2 of this year. Twilio also sports enviable net dollar retention rates equal to or exceeding 125% for the last nine quarters.

But the company's growth is just getting started. With businesses scrambling to deal with the impacts of social distancing, many have accelerated their digital transformation plans. Whether it's a call center associate now working from home, a bank teller interacting with a customer remotely, or a contactless delivery status update, these communication use cases play to Twilio's strengths. What's even more exciting for investors is that these types of customer communications have become must-have capabilities for the brands we use every day.

Although the coronavirus pandemic has been a tailwind for accelerated digital transformation efforts, it's also been a headwind for its travel, transportation, and hospitality customers. As a result of the ongoing uncertainty, management is only projecting its outlook into the next quarter. With third quarter guidance of slightly slower revenue growth of 36% to 38% and a bottom-line loss (after posting a small non-GAAP profit this quarter), the stock took a small step back after the earnings announcement.

Even though its price-to-sales ratio is a lofty 28, the solid long-term prospects for this cloud computing stock make it a compelling buy.

Danny Vena (Microsoft): There's little doubt that Amazon is the undisputed leader in the realm of cloud computing, but biggest doesn't always mean best. For example, many traditional retailers that compete with Amazon are reluctant to line the digital pockets of their biggest rival. For many of them, Microsoft's Azure is a better cloud computing choice.

That's not all. For companies that are longtime users of Office, Microsoft 365, or Dynamics 365 that are already locked into Microsoft's ecosystem, it only makes sense to aggregate many of their services with the same provider.

Microsoft only entered the race for cloud dominance in the past several years, and has bypassed many of the would-be contenders, now trailing just Amazon Web Services (AWS), according to research company Gartner (NYSE: IT) and its much vaunted Magic Quadrant.

Azure has a consistent track record of growing faster than AWS in recent years, and that continued in the quarter ended June 30, 2020. Azure grew 47% year over year during the quarter, while AWS grew 29%. Microsoft noted in its most recent quarterly report that its commercial cloud surpassed $50 billion in revenue for the first time during the trailing-12-month period. For context, AWS reported $40 billion in net sales. Since neither company provides a detailed accounting of what's included in each segment, this isn't an apples-to-apples comparison, but it does show that Microsoft continues to gain ground on its larger rival.

The platform's faster growth isn't the only reason to buy Microsoft stock now. The company has proven to be particularly resistant to the challenges facing many businesses during the pandemic. The company's more personal computing segment, which was expected to be most vulnerable, turned in a stellar performance, getting a boost from gaming via its Surface line of notebooks and tablets and Xbox content and service, which grew an impressive 28% and 65%, respectively.

The productivity and business processes segment also turned in a better-than-expected performance, the result of higher demand due to remote work.

Given the uncertainty wrought by the pandemic and Microsoft's strength across its operating segments, there's never been a better time to add the tech giant's stock to your portfolio.

Chris Neiger (Amazon): Amazon is well-known for its e-commerce dominance, but it's the company's cloud computing segment, Amazon Web Services (AWS), that actually generates most of the company's profits. AWS offers cloud services for data storage, networking, artificial intelligence, and much more -- and it's a huge business for Amazon.

AWS's operating profit was $3.4 billion in the most recent quarter, with impressive operating margins of 31%. The segment's profit easily outpaced the $2.1 billion in operating profit from Amazon's North American e-commerce business.

And not only is AWS a key source of profit for Amazon, but it's also the undisputed leader in the cloud computing infrastructure market. AWS has 33% market share right now, compared to next-in-line Microsoft with 18%.

AWS continues to expand its sales as well, with revenue jumping 29% in the most recent quarter to $10.8 billion. The good news for Amazon is that the cloud computing infrastructure as a service (IaaS) market isn't done growing yet. IaaS will grow from an estimated $50 billion this year to $81 billion in 2022, according to the research firm Gartner.

AWS's dominance in cloud computing, combined with its profitability for Amazon, can't be overstated. As more companies look to cloud computing platforms to host their services, Amazon will surely benefit. The coronavirus has forced more businesses to expand work-from-home services and increase e-commerce sales, and AWS will benefit by being the go-to cloud service for those hosting needs.

Gartner said in a recent press release, "For the remainder of 2020, organizations that expand remote work functionality will prioritize collaboration software, mobile device management, distance learning educational solutions and security, as well as the infrastructure to scale to support increased capacity." As more companies look to the cloud to expand these services, they'll likely rely on Amazon's leading cloud infrastructure service to do so.

A decade ago, I completed the first ever assessment of Australia's emerging "trusted" or private infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) market. I followed this up with a 2010 opinion-editorial calling for improved "cloud computing regulation" in Australia as a model for global oversight of a hugely important market segment.

How important? The cloud computing market has become as critical to economic prosperity as other general purpose markets, such as power, water, and, of course, money. I'm happy to say that over the past decade, significant progress has been made on two fronts:

Data security in the cloud became independently assessed. Buyers of cloud computing services now have confidence when it comes to security in the cloud through the application of information security standards such as theUS Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program(FedRAMP), launched in 2011, and Australia'sInformation Security Registered Assessors Program(IRAP), launched in 2014.

Data sovereignty was addressed through a network of global data centers. Through the deployment of various onshore regions, cloud computing vendors were able to assure buyers of cloud computing services that access to their data would only occur within the legal framework of the jurisdiction in which the data physically resided.

Despite the progress in market oversight, one crucial regulatory feature common to other utility markets remains absent from the cloud computing landscape: a "reserve" or element of direct government participation in or ownership of cloud computing resources for sovereign purposes, such as the reserve bank in financial markets or the universal service obligation legislation found in telecommunications, power, and water.

And like these other industries, use of the system by government agencies is very different from the government itself as an actor within the market whose role is to protect its citizens and national interests. So, in the same way, cloud data sovereignty should not be confused with the need for sovereign cloud capability.

Fast forward to 2020. As I finalize my evaluation of public cloud infrastructure and development platforms for Australia and New Zealand, I once again find myself reviewing the cloud computing market in a time of uncertainty. The biggest change? Despite the pall of a global pandemic, there is increasing interest in national cybersecurity as the line between military, economic, and diplomatic conflict blurs within a "grey zone." And the role that cloud computing plays as part of every nation's critical infrastructure is once again under scrutiny.

In the US, this manifested in theClarifying Lawful Overseas Use of Data Act or the CLOUD Act(2018), which compels US-based vendors to "disclose the contents of an electronic communication or noncontent records or information pertaining to a customer or subscriber, regardless of whether the communication or record is located within or outside the United States." Although other governments can enter (and manyhave) into bilateral agreements for the exchange of data under the CLOUD Act, the extension of disclosure requirements to data centers located in other jurisdictions means the issue of cloud sovereignty is now back on the table.

And the US is not alone: Similar legislation has been enacted globally, such as China'sCyber Security Law(2017) and the UK'sCrime (Overseas Production Orders) Act(2019). The EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), often cited as the ultimate policy in citizen data protection, also contains the ability for access to data under certain situations throughArticle 49.

In response to the shifting legal positions, the EU has been the first to form an alliance aimed at delivering a sovereign public cloud. In Australia, the minister for government services hasflagged new legislationin which "certain data sets of concern to the public should be declared sovereign data sets and should only be hosted in Australia, in an accredited Australian data centre, across Australian networks and only accessed by the Australian government and our Australian service providers." National governments are by no means alone either: The New South Wales government also recently signed anagreement with Australian providerVault Cloud for secure cloud services.

In recent research, we predict that in the next two to five years the widespread adoption of microservices, serverless computing, and containers will deliver public cloud speed and agility across private and industry-specific cloud environments, threatening hyperscalers' dominance. These technical innovations, plus the issues inherent in the global trade of foundational IT services, such as cloud computing, will push the public sector to retreat from global providers in key areas sooner rather than later.

Even if our predictions don't materialize in the near term much like my claim in 2010 that every country needed a sovereign cloud this next wave of change in the cloud market will only be a matter of time.

He ignored the law to get his way on the border wall. He violated the most sacred norms of a multiethnic society by encouraging racial hatred. He made the U.S. guilty of separating babies from their mothers.

Elected officials, terrified of their own constituents, have cowered and temporized in the face of a truly unprecedented assault on democratic values. They believed that they were powerless and acted accordingly. Since they were powerless when it counted, perhaps we should make it official?

Whether they are headlines about Russian interference, or whispers about the dangers of Big Data and profiling, the power of technology to shape our politics is now a mainstream worry: the public overwhelmingly back greater regulation of the role of Big Tech in politics. Who, then, is not on board with regulation? Just over half of people think there should be less red tape stopping politicians saying and doing what their voters want, and say authorities shouldnt control what politicians are allowed to say.

But there is more to it than just an irritation with bureaucracy. This group of regulation sceptics, who over-indexed among working class Britons and Leave voters, were remarkably in favour of abolishing political campaigning altogether. More than two thirds of the group agreed to the following statements, submitted by their peers:

Many of the issues around regulating Big Tech are extremely difficult to legislate for, and require radical new ideas to deal with unprecedented new problems. Regulation of data driven political campaigning is not one of them. The same principles as have governed political campaigning for decades can be updated to apply to the modern world: records of online political adverts should be collated and published for everyone to see; political campaigns should have to report how much they are spending using digital advertising, what they are spending it on, and how they are funded; and those who break electoral laws should face harsher penalties rather than a slap on the wrist. The vast majority of the public support each of those changes. An issue will be that whoever has just won an election may feel they have an advantage of the way the system currently works.

November is coming. As we look across the pond, we might allow ourselves a little hope as Biden leads Trump in poll after poll. But lets not get too excited. There are plenty of voters who are still fed up, still sceptical that this political system offers them anything. That same feeling that many realised (too late) was behind Trumps election, that many blamed (too late!) for the Brexit vote, is still alive and well. Many politicians have found success in promising to reinvigorate their democracies: to take back control, to drain the swamp, to get back to the things that matter. If our findings are anything to go by, many of those for whom this sounded like the change they wanted remain outside our democratic fold.

Tafasitamab Combination Approved for Adults With R/R DLBCL – AJMC.com Managed Markets Network

On July 31, FDA approved tafasitamab-cxix to be used in combination with lenalidomide for second-line treatment of adult patients with relapsed or refractory diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), meeting the needs of patients who are not eligible for an autologous stem cell transplant.

Tafasitamab, to be sold as Monjuvi by MorphoSys and Incyte, is a humanized Fc-modified cytolytic CD19 monoclonal antibody being studied in several B-cell malignancies. As described in the journal Blood, the treatment uses Xencors proprietary Xmab technology, which deploys a different technique to boost affinity for the antigen and make various receptors especially capable of binding to it. In 2018, authors in Annals of Oncology described how this sets off particularly effective processes that target cancer cells and regulate cell death.

Approval was based on phase 2 results for 80 patients in the L-MIND trial, which reported an update May 2019 at the American Society of Clinical Oncology, with final results published last month in The Lancet. Results submitted to FDA showed an overall response rate of 55%, including a compete response rate of 37% and a partial response rate of 18%. Median duration of response was 21.7 months. Common adverse events included neutropenia, fatigue, anemia, diarrhea, thrombocytopenia, cough, pyrexia, peripheral edema, respiratory tract infection, and decreased appetite.

Among non-Hodgkin lymphomas, DLBCL is the most common subtype, accounting for 22% of cases in the United States and 40% worldwide, with about 18,000 US cases per year. People are at higher risk if they have HIV, an autoimmune disease, or if they have had an organ transplant. More common in older people, DLBCL can be very aggressive. Although well-known treatments have been developed, there are gapsand a notable one is when DLBCL cannot be kept in remission after chemotherapy but the patient is not eligible for an autologous stem cell transplant. Some of these patients have had chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy, but this process is costly with significant side effects.

The FDA approval of Monjuvi in combination with lenalidomide helps address an urgent unmet medical need for patients with relapsed or refractory DLBCL in the United States, Herv Hoppenot, CEO of Incyte, said in a statement. FDA had previously granted the combination Fast Track and Breakthrough Therapy Designation in this indication.

Celularity announces the activation of first California Clinical Trial Site following CIRM Grant Award to Advance Treatments for COVID-19 – PRNewswire

FLORHAM PARK, N.J., Aug. 5, 2020 /PRNewswire/ --Celularity today announced that it has been awarded a $750,000 COVID-19 Project grant by the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM), one of the three clinical awards targeting the coronavirus. This grant will support California Institutions participating in the Phase I/II clinical trial of human placental hematopoietic stem cell derived natural killer (NK) cells (CYNK-001) for the treatment of adults with COVID-19.The University of California Irvine is the first CA site to open for patient enrollment.

CIRM's COVID-19 Project supports promising discovery, preclinical and clinical trial stage projects that could quickly advance treatments or vaccines that utilize stem and/or progenitor cells. Celularity will use the CIRM grant to support the evaluation of the anti-viral activities of its cryopreserved investigational product, CYNK-001, in underserved and disproportionately affected populations with COVID-19, an infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Celularity received clearance from the United States Food and Drug Administration to proceed with a Phase I/II study to evaluate the safety, tolerability, and efficacy of CYNK-001 in patients with COVID-19.

The trial will evaluate the safety and the clinical efficacy of CYNK-001 in SARS-CoV-2 positive subjects as measured by clearance of the SARS-CoV-2 and improvement in clinical symptoms or improvement in radiological evaluation of disease related chest x-ray. The primary objective of the Phase I portion of the study is to evaluate the safety, tolerability, and efficacy of multiple CYNK-001 intravenous (IV) infusions in COVID-19 patients and will be administered to up to 14 patients in three doses over the course of seven days.

The Phase II portion of the study is a randomized, open-label, multi-site study measuring multiple doses of CYNK-001 against a control group experiencing a similar degree of infection with best supportive care, with two co-primary endpoints. The first co-primary endpoint is to determine the virologic efficacy of CYNK-001 in facilitating the clearance of SARS-CoV-2 from mucosal specimens and/or peripheral blood. The second co-primary endpoint is to assess the impact of treatment with CYNK-001 on clinical symptoms among patients with COVID-19 related lower respiratory tract infection.

Celularity has treated patients with severe COVID-19 and on ventilator support under compassionate use programs in U.S. CYNK-001 was well tolerated and may be associated with clinical benefit in selected cases.

Business Update

Topline Data from Phase 3 ALS Trial Before End of November 2020

BrainStorm Cell Therapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ:BCLI) is currently conducting a Phase 3 clinical trial of NurOwn in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) (NCT03280056). A total of 200 patients were randomized 1:1 to receive NurOwn or placebo in the randomized, double blind, placebo controlled, multi-dose trial. Cells were extracted once from each patient prior to treatment, with all administrations of NurOwn derived from the same extraction of cells due to a cryopreservation process the company developed for long-term storage of mesenchymal stem cells (MSC). Just as with the companys prior studies, there was a 3-month run-in period prior to the first treatment with two additional NurOwn treatments occurring two and four months following the first treatment. The company is focusing the trial on faster-progressing ALS patients since those patients demonstrated superior outcomes in the Phase 2 trial of NurOwn. The primary outcome of the trial is the ALSFRS-R score responder analysis and we now anticipate topline results before the end of November 2020.

Update on Phase 2 Progressive Multiple Sclerosis Trial

BrainStorm is currently conducting a Phase 2 clinical trial of NurOwn in patients with progressive multiple sclerosis (MS) (NCT03799718). The trial is an open label, single arm study that is enrolling patients with progressive MS with Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) scores of 3.0 6.5. The primary endpoint of the study is the safety and tolerability of three doses of NurOwn with secondary endpoints examining the timed 25-foot walking speed or 9-hole peg test (both validated MS clinical outcome assessments) along with paired cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and blood biomarker analysis. The National Multiple Sclerosis Society awarded the company a $0.5 million grant to help fund the study.

The trial is now fully enrolled and we anticipate dosing to be completed for all patients by the end of 2020. While the company had previously considered performing an interim analysis, since topline data would be available soon after an interim analysis could be performed the company has decided against performing an interim analysis and will instead report topline data for all 20 patients when it becomes available.

NurOwn Derived Exosomes Show Promise in Preclinical ARDS Study

On July 23, 2020, BrainStorm announced the successful completion of the first milestone in developing an exosome-based platform for the treatment of severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) caused by COVID-19. Exosomes are small vesicles (30-150 nm) that are secreted by all cell types. Exosomes from mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), from which NurOwn is derived, can penetrate into deep tissues and deliver various bioactive molecules. In addition, they can be delivered both intravenously or intratracheally.

BrainStorm conducted a preclinical study of MSC-derived exosomes in a mouse model of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced ARDS. Treatment with intratracheally administered exosomes resulted in a statistically significant improvement in various lung functions, including functional lung recovery and decreased lung damage, as judged by the lung disease severity score (P=0.03). In addition, they led to a reduction in a number of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Lastly, exosomes derived from MSC-NTF cells were superior to exosomes derived from nave MSC from the same donor.

We anticipate the results being submitted to a peer reviewed journal for publication and the company is currently deciding whether to initiate a clinical trial program in COVID-19 patients with ARDS.

Financial Update

On August 5, 2020, BrainStorm announced financial results for the second quarter of 2020. As anticipated, the company did not report any revenues during the second quarter of 2020. Net R&D expenses for the second quarter of 2020 were $5.7 million, compared to $3.6 million for the second quarter of 2019. The increase was primarily due to an increase in payroll and stock-based compensation and a decrease in support from the Israel Innovation Authority (IIA) and California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) along with a decrease in costs related to the Phase 3 and Phase 2 clinical trials. Excluding participation from the IIA and CIRM, R&D expenses were $6.0 million in the second quarter of 2020, compared to $6.5 million in the second quarter of 2019. G&A expenses for the second quarter of 2020 were $1.7 million, compared to $1.3 million in the second quarter of 2019. The increase was primarily due to increased payroll and stock-based compensation.

The company exited the second quarter of 2020 with approximately $16.2 million in cash, cash equivalents, and short-term investments. Subsequent to the end of the quarter, the company raised gross proceeds of approximately $13.7 million from the $50 million ATM facility entered into in March 2020 through the sale of 945,082 shares at an average price of $14.48 per share. In addition, the company raised gross proceeds of approximately $6.3 million from the exercise of warrants. We estimate that the company currently has approximately $35 million in cash, cash equivalents, and short-term investments.

As of July 31, 2020, the company had approximately 31.5 million shares outstanding and, when factoring in warrants and stock options, a fully diluted share count of approximately 37.0 million.

Conclusion

The countdown is on to the topline data release for the Phase 3 ALS trial, with those results expected before the end of November 2020. Even with the great run the stock has had since its recent lows in March 2020, we continue to view the shares as undervalued as we currently forecast peak sales for NurOwn of >$1 billion in ALS, >$500 million in MS, and >$2 billion in Alzheimers disease. We recently made a slight change to our model, in which we decreased the discount rate from 17% to 13%, and combined with the recent financing activity has resulted in an increase to our valuation to $33 per share.
