Why Men Are Turning to Cosmetic Procedures for a Competitive Edge in the Boardroom – Robb Report

Not long ago, a successful Silicon Valley tech entrepreneur decided to make a risky new investment hed been toying with for years. Id just hit 50 and sold my second company, he recalls. I looked at myself and thought, I have another 20 years of work in front of me, so Im going to go do this now.

Marc paid $25,000 for a lower face-lift and a nose job. (His name and those of the other patients who spoke to Robb Report have been changed at their request.) One of the best investments Ive made, he says. Unlike other investments in Marcs career, this one was a closely guarded secret, known only to his doctor, wife, brotherand now you.

Nine out of 10 cosmetic procedures in the US are performed on women. Yet to Marc and a growing number of high-flying men, nips, tucks and injections have become stealth weapons to deploy in a Darwinian battle for corporate survival. I play in the high-tech and start-up world, where older individuals will be passed over, says Marc, who also got his first Botox shots this year. The software wars take a lot of energy and commitment. I simply aligned my outer appearance with my inner perspective.

Its not just about advantage in a youth-oriented workplace. As gender roles evolve, vanity is losing much of its stigma for men in general. The beauty buffet, once ladies-only, is now open to all, with men increasingly moving from the hors doeuvres (grooming, beard cultivation, skin care, dieting and exercising) to the appetizers (cosmetic dentistry, hair replacement, hormone therapy) and on to the entrees (Botox, fillers, non-invasive fat reduction) before ordering up the piece de resistance: plastic surgery. Chanel, Fenty and Tom Ford now also offer a once-unthinkable side dish: makeup for men, leading them into the realm of foundation and eyebrow gel.

Men dont use the word beauty, of course. Women talk about beauty. Men talk about vitality, virility, competitive edgethats a masculine way of describing what is essentially vanity, says William Liu, professor of psychology at the University of Maryland, who specializes in issues around masculinity. But what they are really talking about is warding off existential anxiety around death.

The idea of stigma has changed, says Marc. Women should not always have to look made-up, and men can wear makeup. Those mores are changing. Theres still a little bit of raising an eyebrow right now, but its becoming much more acceptable. Some people like to spend money on expensive cars. I like to spend money on myselfI consider my body to be the vehicle I drive in.

For some, cosmetic procedures fit smoothly into the narrative of personal empowerment and the growing idea that you can create yourself: your gender, your face, your identity. Its the old American idea of self-improvement, sliced and diced for the 21st century. Behavior that would once have seemed narcissistic has been reframed as an act of self-care. For starters, technology means theres no longer any need to tolerate physical imperfection. Plus, while millennials are accepting of quirky traits and would be loath to admit to holding a single ideal aesthetic, they also consider the very notion of judging other peoples lifestyle choices so old-fashioned that any taboo surrounding cosmetic enhancements seems like a relic from another era. So lets all get lip fillers.

And they will: Millennials are nearly twice as likely as people over 35 to be considering a cosmetic procedure in the next year, according to a poll last year by RealSelf, a cosmetic-surgery review website. The trend is toward transparency and removal of stigma for everything to do with self-care and self-love, says Simon Ourian, M.D., whom Kylie Jenner has credited forher signature pout with Juvederm, an investment on which Jenner has since built a nine-figure cosmetics business.

More cosmetic work is done in the United States than in any other country, according to a study by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. In 2018, the last year for which figures are available, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) reports that Americans spent a record $16.5 billion on plastic surgery and its twin progeny, Botox and fillers. Botox and other botulinum-toxin brands accounted for 42 percent of the 17.7 million procedures performed in the US by plastic surgeons that year. The real number of such injections is far higher, because they are also routinely dispensed by dentists, dermatologists, ophthalmologists and even walk-in beauty bars.

More men are being seduced by these speedy pick-me-ups as the barriers to entry, both practical and social, diminish. In the US, male use of fillers and Botox has risen by 101 percent and 381 percent, respectively, since 2000, according to the ASPS, while the number of surgical nose jobs has dropped by 65 percent. Demand for handsome noses has not declined: Its just that many men now have their noses adjusted with less daunting fillers instead, according to Alan Matarasso, M.D., a plastic surgeon on New Yorks Upper East Side.

All the leading cosmetic surgeons and dermatologists interviewed for this article say men account for 20 to 35 percent of their clientele, a proportion that is growing while also broadening in scope. As with most style trends, gay men were the first to catch on. Then came the metrosexual type that would come in for Botox after their manicure, as David Mabrie, M.D., a facial plastic surgeon in San Francisco, recounts. Now its more mainstream guys. Guys guys. Men who a few years ago would have considered it a burden to trim a four-inch hair growing out of their ear are now smoothing their fine lines and filling their nasolabial folds.

In New York, the male clientele for Gerald Imber, M.D., has changed from largely those in entertainment to 95 percent CEOs and similarly accomplished professionals. These guys spend more on jet fuel coming to New York than they do on me, he says. Fifteen years ago, says Ourian, his Los Angeles patients were likely to be in entertainment, but the trend has completely changed and they are now from all walks of life. He adds that his practice includes ultra-wealthy businessmen, politicians, heads of state, three kings and five queens.

Even so, enough residual stigma remains that most men keep their Botox habits secret. And for some, the thrill of a clandestine hobby is part of the appeal. Marc likens it to membership in an exclusive club. One of Imbers patients, a 67-year-old real-estate developer from New Jersey, whom well call Nick, also relishes being a member of a secret elite club, in which the members are unknown even to each other. No one knows about it, he says. Thats just my masculine insecurityits a vanity issue. I work a lot with the construction industry, and no one there goes into work and says, I just had a face-lift.

Nick felt that his jowly, hangdog face didnt match his gym-honed physique. I thought, If I cut my head off, I would look a lot younger, he says with a chuckle. But before I do that, Ill see if Dr. Imber can help. So three years ago, he took his girlfriend, whos 20 years his junior, for some couples liposuctionthat was the test runand followed up with a facelift.

I checked into the Carlyle, stayed three days, took the wrappings off and went home, Nick recalls. When I went out, I ran into people I knew at a restaurant. They asked if Id been on vacation. He describes with delight how he was asked for ID at a senior citizens lockdown shopping hour at a grocery store in the Hamptons.

Age has become elastic. On the one hand, Nick does not consider himself old at 67, but in youth-obsessed Silicon Valley, 35 is thought over the hill. There, the surgery is starting younger and younger, as tech-industry executives, who are mostly male, strive to appear relevant to their millennial overlords.

Larry Fan, M.D., a San Francisco plastic surgeon, says his clients now describe a work culture where if theyre over 30 they feel less relevant. Their work involves providing services to younger consumers, and tech luminaries are very young. My patients who are in their 50s say, Im the old guy in the room, and I dont want to feel that way. Young people have a kind of OK boomer mentality.

Fan says his male patients ask to look like Elon Musk: Hes aspirational for his work and [looks like he] has had some enhancements done, hair transplants and other things. He looks like a normal person but masculine and chiseled.

Some of Fans patients, whom he describes as senior tech billionaires with famous names, regard cosmetic procedures as a form of bio-hacking (see here). Their mentality is: I want to live forever if I can find a way, Fan says. I believe in technology, and part of that is new treatments that help me have fewer wrinkles.

Ageism in the tech industry is not confined to Silicon Valley, according to one recruitment executive who worked with software start-ups in New York. The hiring managers were in their 30s, he explains. There are laws against saying youre looking for someone young, so instead they would say we need a culture fit. That was the number-one most important factor. Theyre looking for someone to grab a beer with. The recruiter put it down to the hubris that comes with gaining a lot of power at an early age. It means that they dont think they can learn anything from an older person. They feel invincible.

George, 53, the CEO of a large software company in the Bay Area, agrees that a youthful demeanor is a prerequisite in tech. Whatever HR says, you do look at pictures when you hire someone, and you look at their digital footprint, he says. Are they the right cultural fit? Do they take care of themselves? For better or worse, when you hire someone for a high-stress, high-performance job, part of that is their appearance.

In 2010, five years after Georges divorce from his first wife, his daughters took charge of his online dating profile. Being millennials, they said you have to look great online, he recalls. I realized that pictures had become very important, not just from a dating perspective but also on LinkedIn. That was a turning point for me.

He had dabbled in Botox but, with that revelation, became a devotee. A dermatologist who I played golf with said, If you want to stay looking like that, come in. I kept it up until I was 50, then I added fillers once a year, to keep the volume of my face, George says. Last year, he went to Sachin Parikh, M.D., a Palo Alto surgeon, for a hair transplant. George keeps the procedures private, partly as a career strategy. I dont want to talk about it because its still perceived as less manly. Also, men dont like to share tricks that may make them more competitive in the market. I do cryotherapy, I ride the Peloton every day and Ive had all the genetic testing to see what [conditions] I am predisposed to have, what foods do I process well. I see it all on the same spectrum as bio-hacking.

The paradox of a man being furtive about a procedure he claims is akin to watching his sugar intake is surprisingly common. Talking about going to the gym is OK. Talking about getting a haircut is OK, says Imber. But cosmetic procedures are something they will do for themselves only, and they do not talk about it. In a culture of secrecy, it can be hard for surgeons to attract male clients through word of mouth. But once men are through the door, they keep coming back. Parikh describes the typical profile: The majority have dabbled in teeth whitening and skin care, and they work their way up the ladder from collagen stimulating treatments to fillers and Botox.

Hair-loss consultations can also be a gateway drug to other treatments, says Jessie Cheung, M.D., a Chicago-area dermatologist. A man will typically come in to talk about losing his hair, and we check for hormone deficiencies, she says. If their testosterone is not optimized, I will explain the benefits, and of course they want to perform better. Most clients who come for hormone therapy often get cosmetic treatments, too, and vice versa.

Other in-demand body treatments for men include CoolSculpting, a form of nonsurgical fat removal using cryotherapywildly popular, according to Fan, whose clientele for the procedure is 50 percent maleand skin tightening using ultrasound (Ultherapy) or radio frequency (FaceTite). But injectables are the money-spinner: a 12-year bull run of year-on-year double-digit growth, says Parikh.

Paul Nassif, M.D., a facial surgeon famous for his TV appearances fixing bad surgery on the E! News show Botched, believes men are becoming more susceptible to the pressures of Instagram perfection. They are now on the same track as women, he says. Eight years ago, men were using Botox for work. Now I would say they are trying to make themselves look better on social media.

With fillers they can look like a filtered photo. We call it selfie dysmorphia. One of the biggest cosmetic trends of last year was the growth of reversal treatments for faulty fillers and surgical procedures, with liposuction revision up by 183 percent, according to RealSelf.

In New York, Matarasso is expecting a flood of business as soon as lockdown restrictions ease, after months of financiers, lawyers and such inspecting their double chins on Zoom. He believes that the crazy unemployment rate will lead to more treatments as job applicants grow desperate to gain an edge over their peers.

As demand for cosmetic enhancement rises, any remaining stigma, even among the middle-aged, seems likely to die away. When I talk about it with my close friends, I find a lot of them do it, too, says George, the software CEO. Its dont ask, dont tell, but when you do ask, they do tell.

She said Life is being reshaped by major trends and events such as globalization, terrorism, climate change and in recent times COVID-19. Consequently, life will not give you what you deserve but what you demand. Understanding your area of specialization and building skills that will enable you to grow as well as succeed in your chosen profession is essential. Youth must build digital skills, emotional intelligence, leadership and innovative skills to enable them to access the available opportunities presented by the recent change. In addressing the audience, Oyeduntan stressed on the need for youth to identify their strengths, weakness, opportunities and threats to enable them to employ available technology to develop as well as leverage on their competencies and stand out. Similarly, he advised youth on the importance of developing customer relationship skills as this is essential for succeeding in any career, business or profession. Disinformation in the media: Two ASU journalism experts weigh in – ASU Now

Disinformation has always existed, but with the advent of the internet and social media platforms, spreading untrue information is easier than ever.

The internet allows people to take disinformation and rapidly disperse it to many other people and populations across geographical borders, said Nadya Bliss, executive director of ASUs Global Security Initiative. Now pretty much anyone can institute a sophisticated disinformation campaign and it requires almost no resources to do it right.

The Global Security Initiative works across disciplines to develop new approaches to security challenges and recently received a Department of Defense research award to combat disinformation by identifying and developing defenses against falsified media and adversarial narratives. This research will detect, characterize and attribute misinformation and disinformation, and help journalists identify and refute it.

Kristy Roschke and Dan Gillmor areGlobal Security Initiative affiliates working on this project. Roschke is the managing director of ASUs News Co/Lab and a digital media literacy instructor in the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Gillmor, a Cronkite professor of practice and co-founder of the News Co/Lab, also teaches digital media literacy at ASU. The two recently launched Mediactive, a free digital media literacy course.

Roschke and Gillmor met with a Knowledge Enterprise writer to discuss digital literacy and disinformation.

Question: What is the News Co/Lab and how did it come to be?

Roschke: The News Co/Lab is a small lab where we do research and work to advance media literacy.

Gillmor: After the 2016 election, when many bad actors were pushing disinformation, I posted a call to the big tech companies Facebook, Google and Twitter in particular asking them to get involved in media literacy. I thought we had to address not just the supply of information, but also demand, and do it at scale.

My colleagues and I saw three primary ways to do that: education, media and the technology industry. The impacts we can make within education are uncertain because schools are governed at a local level. The second place where I thought we could scale was through the media. Media organizations, including journalists but not just journalists should make this a part of their mission to help people understand how to deal with information. Journalists had never done that in any serious way. The third area for scale was the technology industry.

We held a news literacy working group at the Cronkite School that was co-sponsored by Facebook. People from the tech companies, data scientists, scholars, journalists and others gathered to discuss media literacy. The News Co/Lab came out of that meeting.

We raised money to get the News Co/Lab launched in the fall of 2017. In 2018, Kristy joined as managing director and she's been very much heading it up since then. She's the driving force now behind all of this.

Question: Why is media literacy important?

Roschke: Media literacy, and the broader bucket, digital literacy, are critical to living in 2020.

When we think about literacy, we think of reading and writing. I really strongly believe that you cannot be a functioning person in society if you don't understand how to interact with technology, information and, more specifically, media.

We have every opportunity to get whatever information we want, whenever we want it from whatever source we can, which is new in the 21st century. We have not equipped people to understand what to do with that responsibility. I think we are behind, and we need to catch up. So, I advocate for students learning about media literacy from the earliest grades all the way through adulthood.

Gillmor: A world of low knowledge skills is one where lots of bad things happen, including some people just taking the word of whoever spoke most recently or most ardently. It becomes about whoever is the best demagogue or whoever is the most persuasive, not because they say things that are true, but because they appeal more skillfully to emotion.

We want a place where people decide whom or what to trust based on reality and the understanding that things are nuanced and that we have to keep learning to arrive at a conclusion based on common, factual bases. Our own choices and decisions may not be the same as others, but the conclusions we come to will at least be based on a mutual understanding and grounded in reality.

Question: What impact does media literacy have on democracy?

Gillmor: I don't want to put a gauzy glow on the past and say everything was lovely before the internet arrived, because it wasn't. There's always been a major component of the population that chose belief over everything else.

Some individuals within every major institution that we thought we could or should trust have done remarkably corrupt things within those institutions. So we now have a situation where anyone who's motivated not to trust has a factual basis for that distrust. Any flaw is considered evidence of total flaw. Thats one of our really big problems.

People are now encouraged to base voting and other choices on the basis of what they want to believe. People are ignoring science and opting for what is in their guts. That strain of thinking has always been around, and it's always been human nature to look for things that support one's own belief system.

Question: There is a lot of misinformation right now about COVID-19. Why is that and what should we do about it?

Roschke: The constantly evolving nature of this crisis has left people confused, scared and frustrated, which is fertile ground to sow disinformation. The most popular disinformation narratives fall along party lines, as does levels of trust in news outlets providingCOVID-19 information.

Gillmor: An ongoing issue is that what we know is changing, because this is a novel coronavirus and knowledge about it is developing through the scientific process. Journalists have an obligation to explain this clearly and patiently, again and again.

Because the response to the coronavirus has become astoundingly and sadly a partisan matter, people need to find health sources that are nonpartisan and based in science, not ideology. The same applies when considering the economic and cultural aspects of a situation that is overwhelming everything it touches.

I'd plead with journalists, in particular, to focus relentlessly on what the evidence shows to put it in context and help the public understand the simple parts e.g., why we should wear masks, period as well as the staggeringly complicated interrelated elements of this crisis.

Question: One emerging form of disinformation is the deep fake. What exactly are deep fakes?

Roschke: Deep fakes are broadly defined as deceptive audio and visual content. Its when you start to incorporate advanced technology like machine learning and artificial intelligence to make falsified video and audio very believable.

A deep fake would allow a bad actor to create very believable, simulated audio and video to make people appear to do and say things that they haven't said or done. In other cases, deep fakes might use machine-generated faces to completely make up people saying and doing false things.

There's a lot of attention being paid to that think about not only how easy it would be to be misled, but also about what this does for credibility. We rely very heavily on eyewitness accounts of things and video has always been one of the most trustworthy ways that we confirm information, because seeing is believing. So, what happens in a world where someone can say, That's not me, I wasn't there?

Deep fakes are like the dystopian future that we might find ourselves in, in one year, five years, 10 years, who knows? But in the world we live in now, there are still plenty of ways to deceive people without needing super sophisticated technological information or advancements. Media literacy can help people ward against these things. We're not powerless in this. We need to take responsibility for what we know about information and media and we need to act with informed intent.

Question: What happens in a world where technology is so advanced that people can lie about what they've said or not?

Gillmor: This idea is not new. I dont think deep fakes are as big of a problem as we worry they are, yet. What concerns me is the idea of these artificially created videos being mass customized and mass targeted at a personal level.

So, suddenly that untrue video you receive of someone doing something or saying something terrible will be slightly different than the one that I get, each one designed to push our personal buttons. That idea is going to become easier to execute, and thats potentially pretty alarming.

Roschke: A politician, for instance, could feel comfortable saying, I don't care if you have that video. That video is fake. We live in a world where there's enough cynicism about how information is produced to believe that's possible, and that is pretty terrifying.

We definitely need to prepare ourselves for this. But what they're calling shallow fakes also exist. Although these are easy to detect, they are still confusing people. For example, there was recently a video of Nancy Pelosi where she was giving a speech, and someone slowed it down so that it sounds like she's very drunk. Slowing down the audio is an easy thing to do in a video, so that's not a deep fake, but its something that is confusing people today.

Question: What kind of media literacy training exists in schools in the U.S. today?

Roschke: Typically, media literacy is going to be in English classes or social studies classes in the context of how to construct an argument and how to find good sources. Students will also learn some historical context for propaganda. You'll see some media literacy taught in journalism classes, where they exist in K12.

The News Co/Lab advocates for a set of skills that should be taught in all subject areas and just reinforced throughout schooling, as opposed to tick that box of a high school class requirement, because it's not a concrete or discrete subject that exists in a vacuum. It touches on everything we do.

Question: What responsibility do social media companies have in fighting the spread of misinformation?

Gillmor: I don't want a few giant companies to be the editors of the internet. People are demanding things from the tech companies that add up to that. They're in a very difficult position. I call this the, do something about it brigade. If theres bad stuff on YouTube or Google, and there definitely is, they demand the companies do something about it. I believe that's a potentially dangerous request.

Of course, it's much more complicated than that. Certainly, Facebook and Google are already editing by virtue of the algorithms they use to promote or demote what shows up in people's feeds or recommendations. Do we really want them to be forced to make granular edits of individuals speech, and in effect have the power to overrule the First Amendment? Does the Facebook terms of service, given the degree to which conversation now takes place on Facebook, overrule the First Amendment in that public square? Yeah, it does. And that worries me a lot.

Roschke: I think that the responsibility is to squash the information that has been proven to be false via fact checking mechanisms, like what they do with things that violate terms of service. If it's hate speech and that sort of thing, there's some automatics that they get downplayed, and I think should be removed entirely. But if something has been fact checked and proved false, it gets labeled as such. On Facebook, if you try to share a post thats false, it will have a gray box over it that says, This has been fact checked and proved false, are you sure you still want to share it?

I think those types of activities could help. There should be a squashing of misinformation that's been proven and there should be an up-play of quality information.

Question: How can I reduce misinformation in my social media feed?

Roschke: We don't have to be experts to just make a couple of subtle changes in our life that might make it better. If your Twitter feed is riddled with junk, maybe it's time to take a look at who you're following and stop following some of those people. In a certain way, if misinformation is the tree that falls in the forest and you're not around to hear it, you're not impacted by it.

There are things we can do, and that's where my attention is to just make us more aware and better able to participate in this environment in a way that we have more control, we feel a sense of responsibility and empowerment. That's not going to solve the problem, but it's certainly not going to hurt. And I think it will help in great ways that can't be underestimated.

Gillmor: Yes, its the idea of supply and demand. Supply is what people publish. Demand is how we handle and react to what people publish. And the place where supply and demand intersect most obviously is sharing, because sharing is an act of publishing, but it's triggered by your consumption.

But, again, I'm wary of solutions that would have the effect of curbing freedom of expression. I think the consequences of making it illegal to lie the Supreme Court has made it clear that doing so violates the First Amendment in general would be much worse than where we are already.

I come back to trying to improve the supply better by working with people. If we can get the people who want to do it right to do it right more often, that moves the needle. Because the media we rely on has lots of flaws. We want to help them do better and they want to do better.

And we can improve the demand, so that at some level it becomes less profitable to con people. Its a similar issue to the demand in society in more recent decades for better, healthier food.

Question: How can your average person combat misinformation online?

Gillmor: Take a breath before you believe stuff that is designed to trigger your emotions.

Read widely on things that interest you. Don't stay with single sources. Diversifying our information diet, or consuming information from a variety of sources, is one of the most powerful choices we can make to combat disinformation.

Ask your own questions. If you do that, you've made a good start.

When Gwen Houston tries to explain just how deep the diversity chasm is in corporate America, she pulls out a statistic so astonishing that it does much of the talking for her: Among the CEOs of Fortune 500 companies, less than 1% are Black, and they are all male. There are no Blacksonthe senior executive leadership teams at CVS, Bank of America, JP Morgan Chase, Wells Fargo, Facebook, Google, Microsoft or Amazon, she notes.

When it comes to talking about the whole issue of racial equity and Black professionals in the workplace, what strikes me in terms of how severe and how bad it is, is that even after a generation of very well-educated and extraordinarily talented Black professionals have forged a path through corporate America, and with another generation following, we still dont see significant and sustainable progress, Houston said.

A former chief diversity officer for several large corporations, including Microsoft and Campbell Soup, Houston dedicated her career to the cause of workplace inclusion. Now as a consultant and advisor, shes still advocating for it. Her June op-ed published in Medium, Corporate Americas Black Equity Gap: CEOs Must Take the Lead, resonated with Wharton management professor Stephanie Creary, an identity and diversity scholar. Creary invited Houston for a deeper discussion on the topic for the Knowledge@Wharton series titled Leading Diversity at Work. The news about diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) isnt all bleak. According to Houston, many companies have made significant strides by embracing DEI as a value proposition, because research has shown that diverse teams are more innovative and adept at anticipating marketplace changes. These firms have implemented unconscious bias training, minority recruitment initiatives and mentorships for minority employees. But thats not enough.

What you and I both know is that effective DEI engagement is [company] leader-led. To be the most progressive, it has to be led from the top. This work has to be central to a companys culture as well as mission-critical for driving significant and long-term business progress.

The Role of the CDO

Renewed attention to the Black Lives Matter movement in the U.S. has drawn sharp focus on racial disparities in the workplace. Some firms are responding by rushing out to hire chief diversity officers, although many do not understand the role that CDOs should fill. Creary asked Houston to explain what makes an effective and engaged CDO, and whether that position should report to Human Resources or the CEO.

Houston said it depends on the maturity and dedication of the chief executive. She once reported to a CEO who couldnt care less about her work and barely noticed she was there. Without consulting her, he attended a business roundtable about diversity and was called out by colleagues on his lack of knowledge and commitment to DEI. Calling it an eye-opening moment, the CEO met with Houston and asked her to help him change the workplace culture and aggressively pursue diversity goals. She immediately assigned him some reading material on race and connected him with diversity mentors. His re-education had begun.

Boy, was that a turning point. Probably one of the best experiences and relationships I ever had with a CEO was in that scenario and the aftermath of it, Houston recalled. A CEOs empowerment, endorsement of this role and what it can become can be the difference between a highly effective DEI engagement, commitment and progress versus one that can hardly get off the ground or is fleeting at best.

Both Houston and Creary said that kind of re-education unlearning old assumptions about race is one of the toughest challenges to achieving a more equitable workplace. Many white people are uncomfortable talking about racism or believe that it is a problem for minorities to solve. Or they rely on the excuse that they simply cannot find qualified minority or female candidates for the job. Houston said she often counters that argument with demographic data that shows there are plenty of diverse candidates in the pipeline.

By the way, when we talk about diversity, theres no substitute for quality, she said. One of the phrases Id love for people not to say is qualified, diverse candidates. Do you really think I want to go after unqualified talent? Thats not who I am. But those terms are not mutually exclusive, and those are some of the microaggressions that people of color, Black people, experience all the time, that were lowering the bar, lowering the standards to hire them. And that couldnt be further from the truth.

One of the phrases Id love for people not to say is qualified diverse candidates. Do you really think I want to go after unqualified talent?

A Post-racial Society?

Both women, who are Black, expressed uncertainty about where the outpouring of support in the last few months for the Black Lives Matter movement will lead. Spurred by the killings of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd at the hands of police, citizens of all ages and races have taken to the streets and to social media to demand change. That outcry has also spread to the workplace, where systemic racism has often kept people of color from advancing in the same numbers and with the same speed as their white colleagues.

I really havent known what to make of it, and I think part of it is deeply personal for me because Im so afraid to get let down, Houston said of the widespread call for social justice. If I allow myself to get emotionally invested in the power of these voices, even though I do believe in them, Im still not sure where this is going to go and if were going to hit a freefall.

Houston harkened back to 2008, when the U.S. elected its first Black president. When Barack Obama defeated John McCain by nearly 10 million votes, many believed it signified that America had moved beyond its painful past of slavery, segregation and struggle and transformed into a more peaceful, post-racial society. But that was more wishful thinking than reality.

In her piece on Medium, Houston cited an incident involving a woman named Amy Cooper as an example of how systemic racism persists. Cooper made headlines in July for calling 911 when a Black man in New York Citys Central Park asked her to leash her dog while she was in an area reserved for birdwatching. In cellphone video taken by the man and viewed more than 40 million times online, an agitated Cooper tells him that she will call police and say that an African American man is threatening her.

Were not on a level playing field. This is not a post-racial society.

Many have argued that Coopers conscious decision to use the mans race as a descriptor demonstrates a flagrant use of white privilege. But whats even more concerning to Houston is that Cooper was a head of insurance portfolio management at Franklin Templeton (she was fired after the incident). How did her attitudes about race blatant in the video filter into her actions at work, even subconsciously?

Our workplaces are a microcosm of broader society. Whats happening in the world finds its way into the work environment, she said. So, were not on a level playing field. This is not a post-racial society, not when you have a 40-year-old white woman doing what she did.

Creary agreed, saying that people dont leave their attitudes behind when they walk into the office. We actually bring those same selves to work. Whether its Amy Cooper or somebody else, you see people acting and engaging in racist, sexist, homophobic ways outside of the workplace, and its very hard for us to imagine that they wouldnt be doing those same things inside of the workplace. And when that happens, thats why we have inequity and lack of opportunity.

Houston said sometimes the problem stems from a lack of perspective. An ambulatory person does not experience the world in the same way as someone in a wheelchair, for example. The truth is, when something isnt your reality, you dont see it, she said. Thats why education and empathy are so important, especially at the top of the organizational chart. Once the unconscious bias is exposed, acknowledged and understood, change can begin.

You cannot unsee it, and it should stay in your mind, and it should cause you to look at things with a new filter, Houston said. It should change the way you view things going forward.

Managing your money without a bank account is doable. But it can pose challenges and the COVID-19 pandemic has only added more.

Your economic impact payment mightve arrived weeks or months after others did, in the form of a check or prepaid debit card, because you couldnt choose the faster delivery option of direct deposit into a bank account. And if youve gone to the store lately, you may have been asked to pay with a debit or credit card or in exact change due to a nationwide shortage of coins and concerns over germ transmission.

A bank account can make life easier in these situations, among others. To avoid future issues, consider opening one or try again if youve been rejected in the past. Heres a guide to getting started.

Assess your money needs

If youre one of the 14 million adults without a bank account in the U.S., you might have a system that works for you. Maybe that includes using alternative products such as prepaid debit cards and check cashing services. Financial counselor Brandy Baxter has worked with clients who used check cashing services for practical reasons.

Delayed receipt of money from the coronavirus relief bill is one of the newest difficulties faced by people who don't have bank accounts. But there are other challenges as well, and it may come as an unwelcome surprise that banks sometimes turn down those applying for their first account.(Photo: Jeff Chiu, AP)

They preferred to walk in, walk out with cash in hand, says Baxter, an accredited financial counselor and financial coach who runs the firm Living Abundantly in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Check cashing stores like Check n Go and ACE Cash Express may operate for longer hours than banks and have easy approval processes to get cash quickly. But this comes with a steep fee, which can range from 1% to 6%, or more, of the check amount.

Bank accounts can fulfill money needs beyond what prepaid cards and check cashing services can. For example, their fraud protections can limit what you pay if youre victimized, and many accounts let you lock debit cards remotely when stolen.

And once youve begun a relationship with a bank, other doors open: Credit cards, auto or small business loans and cheaper alternatives to payday loans may eventually be within reach.

Checking accounts dont just help you save costs; theyre the stepping stones to use other financial products, says David Rothstein, principal at Cities for Financial Empowerment Fund, who manages BankOn, a national platform that promotes financial inclusion.

Find a bank that fits you

If you find banks intimidating or have had issues getting an account before, community banks and credit unions tend to be more accommodating than national banks and are often mission-driven for example, focusing on the financial health of their surrounding communities.

Were very lenient at giving someone a second chance, says Pedro Murillo, area branch manager in the San Francisco Bay Area for Self-Help Federal Credit Union. If an employee comes in to apply for a loan and doesnt have pay stubs, what else (can they) show us? A letter from (their) employer? We dont want to give up.

Like other credit unions, Self-Help requires a person to open a savings account to become a member; the minimum to open an account is typically a few bucks. Then members can apply for other products, like a credit builder loan.

You can search online for the term CDFI which stands for community development financial institution to find credit unions like Self-Help near you. Many require those who join to be in the same area or state where the credit union or bank has branches.

What to know about applying

To open an account, youll generally need your Social Security number, one or two forms of identification and money for the first deposit.

Its common to apply for two bank accounts at the same time: a checking and a savings account. The checking account grants access to a debit card, bill payment system and other services, while the savings account lets you set money aside and, ideally, grow by earning interest.

Banks usually screen applicants on ChexSystems, a national reporting agency that keeps records of accounts closed against a persons will. If you have lost access to a bank account in the past, you might be rejected by other banks until you settle your ChexSystems record. This can mean paying off debt to a bank or disputing errors on the record.

Once youre cleared, consider what banks often call a second chance checking account or a BankOn-approved checking account. Many of these dont charge overdraft fees, which kick in if you try paying for something that would put your balance in the negative.

Finding and opening the right bank account involves some effort. But once youre approved, having a safe place for your money and a better chance to get affordable loans can make it worthwhile.

To have a checking account is the cornerstone of any financial empowerment effort, Rothstein says.

Every human on Earth has been created through human sexual reproduction as the offspring of two parents. A male and a female must engage sexually for human reproduction to take place. The biological process is important for the continuation of human life on Earth. Once a male and a female fall in love and choose to have children, there are several steps that must take place to produce a child.

First, a boy and girl must first reach puberty, the time when bodies begin to change and become more mature. The male and female can now produce special cells for human reproduction. It is at this time when a young man and woman can have sexual relations to produce new offspring, a baby.

Next, the male and female must then have sexual relations; the man's penis will enter the female's vagina. Many of the sperm (sex cells) produced by the man swim and seek to enter the female egg cell. Each sperm cell and egg cell contain 23 chromosomes, which are the instructions for the new human. Only one of the sperm cells will fertilize the egg cell. Fertilization leads to the development of a new individual.

Following fertilization, the new human begins to grow and develop inside the mother's stomach. A nine-month term of pregnancy begins as the new baby immediately begins to develop. A 1-day baby is called a zygote, and during the first 2 months, the baby is called an embryo. From the 3rd month to birth, the baby is referred to as a fetus. During pregnancy, the baby continues to grow and develop, receiving air and nutrients from the mother. After about 9 months, the baby is born and ready to enter the world.

Human sexual reproduction is not a complicated process, but it is much different than asexual reproduction, which involves just one parent. Each parent during human reproduction passed along 23 chromosomes to make a new person. The hair color and eye color may be passed on by the mother and the shape of a chin and height from a father. Though everyone is human, offspring are not exact copies.

If humans were born using asexual reproduction, everyone might look alike. However, remember, as people grow and develop, the cells in the body are reproducing using asexual reproduction. For example, a new skin cell will look like dying skins cells, new blood cells will appear the same as dying blood cells, and this takes place with all the cells of the body.

Finally, once a person reaches puberty the body will begin to change. As a female, the body will have the potential to produce egg cells, and if a male, the body will begin to produce sperm cells. Whether they are used or not, they will die off and new ones will be produced by the body to replace them.

When parents have children, they must be ready to look after the child until the child becomes an adult. It is an important decision that all people must make when they choose to have sexual relations with another person.

In summary, there are two kinds of reproduction, asexual and sexual. Asexual includes just one parent and identical offspring, sexual involves two parents and the offspring will be similar but not identical. Human reproduction includes several steps beginning with sexual relations between a male and female leading to the growth and development of a new baby born approximately 9 months later.

Only the nose knows: New international network explores how odors lead to actions – CU Boulder Today

CU Boulder will lead a groundbreaking new international research network dubbed Odor2Action starting this fall. The work is aimed at understanding how animals use information from odors in their environment to guide behavior, with far-ranging implications for our understanding of the human brain.

The network was announced Monday as part of the Next Generation Networks for Neuroscience (NeuroNex) Program. Over the next five years, CU Boulder will be leading 16 scientists from 16 prestigious institutions around the world to better understand the brain and its evolution by reverse-engineering how it interprets odors. The project is funded by a $20.2 million award from the National Science Foundation, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the UK Research and Innovation Medical Research Council.

The network will examine all the steps involved in how an odor stimulus gets encoded by the brain and then activates the motor circuits to produce a behavioral response in an animal. The model species they will work with to do this, like fruit flies and mice, will make headway in understanding these same steps in humans.

The chemical sensing process (i.e. smell) evolved in the very earliest life forms on Earth, said John Crimaldi, lead principal investigator on the network and professor in the Department of Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering at CU. The idea here is that all brain evolution has taken place in the presence of chemical sensing. And so it's thought to be a primal portal from which to view brain function.

While Crimaldi and CU Boulder have previously received significant awards to research how animals find the source of an odor, this project is much broader and aims to understand the whole brain and the mechanism that goes into a behavioral response to smelling something.

Crimaldi said smell is the least understood sense and that humans have struggled to replicate odor-based searches with machines. Doing so, however, would allow robots to take over treacherous duties instead of humans or dogs, unlocking a new area of advancement for autonomous systems. These robots could one day rescue a person buried in an avalanche, locate valuable natural resources, or find chemical weapons and explosives on their own, for example.

Keith Molenaar, interim dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Science, said the network was truly a special project and among the largest the college had ever been involved in. He said the work would result in transformational research around our understanding of the brain that could also lead to cures for diseases that connect to our sense of smellor even understanding why loss of smell is a symptom of some diseases like COVID-19 among many other areas and across many different fields.

The fact that an engineer, Professor John Crimaldi, is leading a group of neuroscientists, mathematicians and biologists, speaks to the truly interdisciplinary nature of the research, Molenaar said.

The network is composed of three interdisciplinary research groups (IRGs) that form a loop in animal sensing and behavior. The first is focused on theoretical mathematics and mapping to better understand how the characteristics of smells are encoded in the brain. The second builds on this and will determine how the encoded odors produce a behavioral response. The third group will investigate how this behavioral response alters the animals perception of the odor it is sensing.

As an engineer, Crimaldi said he never expected to end up working in neuroscience but it turns out theres a lot of engineering involved in understanding what odors look like. He currently studies fluid mechanics from a theoretical perspective; using lasers in a non-intrusive way to measure flowslike odorsthrough air and liquids. Hes looked at everything from why coral reproduction underwater is successful to how animals can tell where a smell is coming from.

Life forms have evolved to take advantage of specific opportunities and constraints that are imposed by their physical environment, Crimaldi said. I like to say we don't just use physics to understand biology or ecology, or the brain. We also use evolutionary processes that have evolved in animals to help us understand details of what's going on in the physical world.

Q: I'm usually a pretty confident dad but the thought of having the "birds and bees" talk with my preteen son has me sweating bullets. Help?!

Jim: I understand. When the time came for me to talk with my oldest son, Trent, about sex, I was pretty nervous. Human reproduction can be difficult for two adults to talk about openly. It's an even more delicate conversation with a child. Nevertheless, I was ready to push forward.

After explaining the sacredness of human sexuality, I carefully described, in simple and age-appropriate terms, the basic mechanics of sex. When I finished, Trent was awfully quiet. He finally looked up at me and said, "That is weird! That is really weird!" I couldn't help but chuckle the innocence of youth!

But that's exactly what made his reaction such a beautiful moment. My son's introduction to this life-changing issue wasn't from kids at school, television or music lyrics. It was from me, his father.

Most of us guys appreciate that a tough job is easier with the right tools at hand. Q: As a married person, is it OK to chat online or send private social media messages to members of the opposite sex?

Greg Smalley, Vice President, Family Ministries: There's no simple answer to this question. Everything depends on who these "members of the opposite sex" are, the context of your communication with them, the background of your relationships with them and your reasons and motives for wanting to stay in touch. Are you talking about old friends of the family? Relatives? Coworkers? Members of a professional network? Or is this a question of renewing acquaintances with an "old flame" or two? For obvious reasons, it makes a huge difference.

From a certain perspective, maintaining a healthy marriage while wisely managing relationships with members of the opposite sex is no different in cyberspace than it is in the "real" world for example, at a party, at a high school reunion or while out to dinner with other couples at a restaurant. Sometimes it's just a matter of establishing and maintaining appropriate boundaries. On other occasions, it can be a fine art that requires wisdom, discernment and maturity.

Before you were married you may have had lots of friends of the opposite sex. But once you've said, "I do," your bond with your spouse must take priority over every other relationship. Most affairs begin as an innocent connection between two people. Time spent together, whether face-to-face, by phone or via computer, can lead to the sharing of intimate secrets which can then progress toward betrayal and infidelity.

In every circumstance, your love for your spouse and your commitment to your marriage should be your guiding principles. That love and that commitment represent the "bottom line" that determines all your thoughts, choices and actions with reference to individuals of the opposite sex. If you value your marriage and genuinely desire to protect it, you need to be on your guard against unforeseen threats.

So, I'd summarize it this way: If your chats or private messages venture into territory that you'd feel uncomfortable letting your spouse read it's time to stop.

New weed killer studies raise concern for reproductive health – US Right to Know – U.S. Right to Know

As Bayer AG seeks to discount concerns that Monsantos glyphosate-based herbicides cause cancer, several new studies are raising questions about the chemicals potential impact on reproductive health.

An assortment of animal studies released this summer indicate that glyphosate exposures impact reproductive organs and could threaten fertility, adding fresh evidence that the weed killing agent might be an endocrine disruptor. Endocrine disrupting chemicals may mimic or interfere with the bodys hormones and are linked with developmental and reproductive problems as well as brain and immune system dysfunction.

In a paper published last month in Molecular and Cellular Endocrinology, four researchers from Argentina said that studies contradict assurances by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that glyphosate is safe.

The new research comes as Bayer is attempting to settle more than 100,000 claims brought in the United States by people who allege exposure to Monsantos Roundup and other glyphosate-based herbicide products caused them to develop non-Hodgkin lymphoma. The plaintiffs in the nationwide litigation also claim Monsanto has long sought to hide the risks of its herbicides.

Bayer inherited the Roundup litigation when it bought Monsanto in 2018, shortly before the first of three trial victories for plaintiffs.

The studies also come as consumer groups work to better understand how to reduce their exposure to glyphosate through diet. A study published Aug. 11 found that after switching to an organic diet for just a few days, people could cut the levels of glyphosate found in their urine by more than 70 percent. Notably, the researchers found that the children in the study had much higher levels of glyphosate in their urine than did the adults. Both adults and children saw large drops in the presence of the pesticide following the diet change.

Glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, is the most widely used weed killer in the world. Monsanto introduced glyphosate-tolerant crops in the 1990s to encourage farmers to spray glyphosate directly over whole fields of crops, killing weeds but not the genetically altered crops. The widespread use of glyphosate, by farmers as well as homeowners, utilities and public entities, has drawn growing concern over the years because of its pervasiveness and fears about what it could be doing to human and environmental health. The chemical is now found commonly in food and water and in human urine.

According to the Argentinian scientists, some of the reported effects of glyphosate seen in the new animal studies are due to exposure to high doses; but there is new evidence showing that even low dose exposure could also alter the development of the female reproductive tract, with consequences on fertility. When animals are exposed to glyphosate before puberty, alterations are seen in the development and differentiation of ovarian follicles and the uterus, the scientists said. Additionally, exposure to herbicides made with glyphosate during gestation could alter the development of the offspring. It all adds up to show that glyphosate and glyphosate-based herbicides are endocrine disruptors, the researchers concluded.

Agricultural scientist Don Huber, professor emeritus from Purdue University,said the new research expands on knowledge about the potential scope of damage associated with glyphosate and glyphosate-based herbicides and provides a better grasp of understanding the seriousness of the exposure that is ubiquitous in our culture now.

Huber has warned for years that Monsantos Roundup might be contributing to fertility problems in livestock.

One noteworthy study published online in July in the journal Food and Chemical Toxicology, determined that glyphosate or glyphosate-based herbicides disrupted critical hormonal and uterine molecular targets in exposed pregnant rats.

A different study recently published in the journal Toxicology and Applied Pharmacology by researchers from Iowa State University looked at glyphosate exposure in mice. The researchers concluded that chronic low-level exposure to glyphosate alters the ovarian proteome (a set of expressed proteins in a given type of cell or organism) and may ultimately impact ovarian function. In a related paper from the same two Iowa State researchers and one additional author, published in Reproductive Toxicology, the researchers said they did not find endocrine disrupting effects in the mice exposed to glyphosate, however.

Researchers from the University of Georgia reported in the journal Veterinary and Animal Science that consumption by livestock of grain laced with glyphosate residues appeared to carry potential harm for the animals, according to a review of studies on the topic. Based on the literature review, glyphosate-based herbicides appear to act as reproductive toxicants, having a wide range of effects on both the male and female reproductive systems, the researchers said.

Alarming results were also seen in sheep. A study published in the journal Environmental Pollution looked at the impacts of glyphosate exposure on the development of the uterus in female lambs. They found changes that they said might affect the female reproductive health of sheep and show glyphosate-based herbicides acting as an endocrine disruptor.

Also published in Environmental Pollution, scientists from Finland and Spain said in a new paper that they had performed the first long-term experiment of the effects of sub-toxic glyphosate exposure on poultry. They experimentally exposed female and male quails to glyphosate-based herbicides from the ages of 10 days to 52 weeks.

The researchers concluded that the glyphosate herbicides could modulate key physiological pathways, antioxidant status, testosterone, and the microbiome but they did not detect effects on reproduction. They said the effects of glyphosate may not always be visible with traditional, especially short-term, toxicology testing, and such testing may not fully capture the risks

Glyphosate and Neonicotinoids

One of the newest studies looking at glyphosate impacts on health was published this month in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health. Researchers concluded that glyphosate as well as the insecticides thiacloprid and imidacloprid, were potential endocrine disruptors.

The insecticides are part of the neonicotinoid class of chemicals and are among the most heavily used insecticides in the world.

The researchers said that they monitored the effect of glyphosate and the two neonicotinoids on two critical targets of the endocrine system: Aromatase, the enzyme responsible for estrogen biosynthesis, and estrogen receptor alpha, the main protein promoting estrogen signaling.

Their results were mixed. The researchers said with respect to glyphosate, the weed killer inhibited aromatase activity but the inhibition was partial and weak. Importantly the researchers said glyphosate did not induce estrogenic activity. The results were consistent with the screening program conducted by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, which concluded that there is no convincing evidence of a potential interaction with the estrogen pathway for glyphosate, they said.

The researchers did see estrogenic activity with imidacloprid and thiacloprid, but at concentrations higher than the pesticide levels measured in human biological samples. The researchers concluded that low doses of these pesticides should not be considered harmless, however, because these pesticides, together with other endocrine disrupting chemicals, might cause an overall estrogenic effect.

The varying findings come as many countries and localities around the world evaluate whether or not to limit or ban continued use of glyphosate herbicides.

A California appeals court ruled last monththat there was abundant evidence that glyphosate, together with the other ingredients in Roundup products, caused cancer.

How Close Are We To Making Babies from Bone Marrow? – Discover Magazine

In 2007, a group of researchers reported a startling discovery: They had created sperm-like cells out of stem cells taken from the bone marrow of human men. Two years later, however, the study was retracted due to charges of plagiarism. Thirteen years later, the ability to create functional human sperm out of stem cells remains elusive.

Scientists have been trying to figure out how to create functioning human gametes eggs and sperm from stem cells for 20 or 30 years, says Vittorio Sebastiano, a stem cell biologist at Stanford University whose research focuses on reproductive biology. Doing so would help people struggling with infertility have children and help scientists unlock the secrets of human development. Since 2007, scientists have made considerable progress on this front, creating healthy mouse pups from stem cell-generated gametes and even immature human egg cells. But there is still a long road ahead before scientists will be able to convert skin or bone marrow into babies.

We are trying to really find ways to efficiently, robustly generate germ cells that can be, in the short term, used to understand the biology of these concepts, but in the long term [used to be] able to restore fertility, says Sebastiano.

When the first baby conceived via in vitro fertilization (IVF) was born in 1978, it was a major step forward for reproductive science and a precursor to the stem cell research conducted by Sebastiano and others today, he says. But IVF is not an option for every individual or couple trying to have a biological child, including those who are born without gametes or who receive aggressive cancer treatments at a young age. This scientific technique would offer these individuals a new shot at reproduction.

The next major step came in the 2000s, with the creation of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). These cells are taken from blood or skin cells and reprogrammed to behave like embryonic cells, which have the ability to develop into any type of cell in the body. Since then, researchers have been trying to figure out how to turn these embryonic-like cells into functional sperm and eggs.

Part of what has made this work so challenging is that scientists havent been able to fully grasp what happens in a human embryo during normal development, says Sebastiano. Scientists understand this process in mice because the rodents are easy to study in the lab. But ethical restrictions and technical factors (like having access to the embryos at just the right point in time) make this phenomenon hard to study in people, he says.

Despite the roadblocks, scientists have made significant progress in the last 10 years. In 2012, a group of researchers in Japan created fertile mouse eggs from iPSCs and used those eggs to breed healthy mouse pups. In [the] mouse, the whole circle has already been completed, says Sebastiano. Now it has been shown by a couple of groups in the UK and in Japan that you can generate embryonic-like cells from mice and then you can actually push these cells to become eggs or sperm, fully functional.

In 2018, the same group of Japanese scientists made another major breakthrough. Using human blood cells and the pluripotent stem cell technique, they managed to produce immature human eggs.

Similar efforts to create sperm are not as far along, says Sebastiano. Several efforts over the years have purported to create sperm-like cells, including the 2007 blood marrow study. A much-heralded study published in 2014 also made major news, but Sebastiano says the development of the cells in that study didnt go far beyond the earliest stages of differentiation.

But, we are actively working on it, says Sebastiano. Probably in the next few years we will be able to generate fully functional sperm and fully functional oocytes. Then, the question will be how do scientists test the quality of these gametes, he says.

The only way to fully assess the quality and functionality of a sperm or egg is to use it to, well, try to fertilize another gamete and produce a baby. Thats why this work has to be approached with the utmost care, says Sebastiano. He hypothesizes that once scientists have developed techniques that they think produce mature human oocytes and sperm, the next step will be testing these techniques in primates. That way, researchers can follow the entire life of individual animals produced from this technique to see if any unexpected problems develop, he says.

Sebastiano has no doubt that one day, these stem cells could help individuals struggling with infertility to produce healthy children. This, along with a fascination with biological development, is what drives Sebastianos work. There are also, of course, significant ethical considerations that have to be carefully considered. This technique has the potential to affect human life on a generational level, he notes. And many people also raise concerns about other future consequences, like the ability to create designer babies or produce offspring from hairs stolen from unsuspecting celebrities. Bioethics experts have written about the need to start working through the medical and legal issues around this technique now, before it is viable.

There is a need actually to develop this, but since we are really dealing with a very unique cell type we need to be cautious, says Sebastiano.

Biomaterial-Based Vaccine That Sits Under the Skin Shows Promise Against SARS-CoV-2 – Technology Networks

A team of multidisciplinary scientists including bioengineers, materials-scientists and immunologists at the Wyss Institute has created a novel infection vaccine platform know as OmniVax.The unique biomaterial-based platform works by presenting antigens to the immune system in a controlled and sustained way, using a 3D scaffold containing the antigen that can be injected to mimic an infection under the skin. The OmniVax technology inspired by the work of Professor David Mooney whose research centerd on creating a novel cancer vaccine has been utilized to create a vaccine against urinary tract infections (UTI) amongst other applications.

Most recently, the team at the Wyss Institute have explored its capability for developing a vaccine against SARS-CoV-2, for which they are conducting preclinical tests that have demonstrated positive results thus far.

Technology Networks spoke with Lead Senior Staff Scientist Ed Doherty from the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University, to learn more.

Molly Campbell (MC): Please can you tell us about the history of the OMNIVAX platform and the development of a biocompatible and biodegradable immuno-material-based vaccine?

Ed Doherty (ED): The OmniVax infection technology was based on an older vaccine concept invented in the Mooney Laboratory. The original vaccine technology concept was invented by a graduate student, Omar Ali Ph. D, with professor David Mooney at Harvards School of Engineering and Applied Sciences in 2009. This technology was designed to collect immune cells from a patient, activate them (in vitro) against tumor cells and then re-inject the activated cells to fight the tumor. Our new concept by-passed the removal, expensive cell culture and poor yield upon re-injection by designing a system that could recruit and activate cells all in vivo. The idea was to recruit the cells into a biomaterial, in the initial configuration it was an implanted degradable poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) foamed polymer, and present AN antigen and adjuvant to activate the cells. The oncology vaccine utilized the patients own tumor cells as the antigen source. This concept was further developed by my team at the Wyss Institute and subsequentially tested in a Phase I Human Clinical Trial to treat Melanoma with the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. The twenty-five-patient trial demonstrated the vaccine was well tolerated and the additional data will be published.

As my team completed preparing for the Phase I melanoma trial, members of the microbiology/virology team asked if our vaccine platform would work with pathogens as antigens to target infectious diseases. We quickly attempted a few pilot studies to demonstrate protection against a bolus injection of E.coli in a sepsis animal model and soon after the infection vaccine project was funded by the Wyss Institute. We opted to use a newly patented version of the system that utilized mesoporous silica rods (MSR) to create the required scaffold structure, which was injectable unlike the PLGA vaccine which was implantable. We continued to develop new vaccines against MRSA, S. pneumonia, Influenza, HIV, K. pneumonia to demonstrate the capabilities of the platform.

The team began to develop other capabilities to support further development and provide more in-depth characterization of the technology. We began to work with business development personnel to generate business models to identify the best applications and to get feedback from key opinion leaders and physicians. Over the last year we have conducted enough planning and strategizing to feel comfortable that we should form a new company based on the OmniVax platform. We hope to finalize funding over the next few months and begin operations in early 2021.

MC: How does the OmniVax platform work?ED: Unlike traditional protein subunit vaccines which have only an antigen injected to elicit the immune response, the OmniVax platform creates a 3D scaffold with the antigen and other factors to mimic an infection under the skin. The vaccination platform uses a biomaterial-based scaffold injected subcutaneously to deliver a growth factor that attracts large concentrations of immature immune cells (dendritic cells) into the structure which contains the target antigen and activating adjuvant. These immune cells are designed to internalize the antigen, activating them and causing them to migrate to the nearest draining lymph node. Once in the lymph node, the activated, or mature, dendritic cell presents the antigen to the B and T cells, creating both a humoral and cellular immune response against the target antigen. The presence of the scaffold combined with recruiting the specific cell type increases the number and quality of the interactions of the immune cells with target antigens and adjuvants. This safely improves the immunogenicity of the antigen, which is the main reason vaccines fail. The efficiency of the vaccination combined with seven days of recruiting immune cells contributes to the increased duration of the response. Both the Mooney lab and the team at the Wyss Institute have demonstrated the mechanism and utility of this platform technology in dozens of peer-reviewed publications, which also describe feasibility in oncology, reproduction and pathogenic applications. There are several publications that demonstrate that the scaffold structure is essential to maximize the immunogenicity of the target antigen.

MC: How does the scaffold extend the time that dendritic cells are exposed to antigens?ED: There are two answers to this question; the first is that we demonstrated that significantly more dendritic cells are exposed to the target antigen and adjuvant due to being recruited into the scaffold structure. Secondly, the dendritic cells are trafficked though the vaccine to the lymph nodes over the course of a seven-day release of the recruiting factor. This increased number of cells exposed to the antigen and adjuvant is amplified by the constant cycle of dendritic cells being recruit, activated and migrating to the lymph nodes over the seven-day release of recruiting factor. This unique feature of OmniVax has consistently demonstrated the technology platforms ability to increase the robustness and durability of target antigens.

MC: Can you discuss the advantages of combining multiple antigens in a single vaccination using simple modular technologies?ED: The ease to which we can add multiple target antigens to our vaccine platform creates two main advantages to addressing infectious diseases. The first would be to create broader coverage by adding a diverse set of antigens specific to that pathogen or pathogen family, increasing the chances of efficacy and provding cross reactivity with similar or mutated pathogens. Currently there are numerous multivalent approved vaccines (i.e. Prevnar, MMRII) on the market but design modifications require significant development and add complexity to the manufacturing process, we believe this wouldnt be the case with OmniVax.

The modularity of our vaccine platform would also be important to address pandemics or other outbreaks, because the ease of incorporation of antigens into the vaccine system can be done quickly and efficiently which allows for rapid deployment. Perhaps the greater advantage of our system is that the design allows the antigen (viral or bacterial) to be prepared separately at time of outbreak, and be added to the other components which have be pre-manufactured and stored in large qualities.

MC: You are currently developing a vaccine to treat recurring UTIs. Can you tell us more about this? What stage of testing has this vaccine reached?ED: The recurring urinary tract infection (rUTI) vaccine incorporates bacterial adhesion protein antigens that target the mechanism E.coli use to adhere to the lining of the urinary tract. The ability to adhere to the urinary tract allows the bacteria to become embedded and very difficult to eliminate with antibiotics. Although the free bacteria can be controlled with antibiotics, each recurrence must be addressed once symptoms occur in the patient. The treatment were proposing should create an immune response that will eliminate the bacteria during subsequent recurrences and ultimately stop the infection by allowing no bacteria to form new protected sites of infection.

Approximately 50% of women will experience a UTI in their lifetime and 10-20% of all women will experience recurrent UTI. In the US each year, three million women have recurring UTI (two or more for 12- month period). UTIs are also a significant cause of morbidity in infant boys and elderly men. An important subgroup is complicated UTIs, including catheter-associated infections, which have high incidence of antibiotic resistance. The potential for UTI vaccine would represents a $1B+ addressable market. Additionally, our vaccine to the E.coli bacteria that causes 80% of all rUTIs had been previously demonstrated to provide protection against E.coli in a sepsis model developed at the Wyss Institute. The vaccine to prevent rUTI has been tested at the Wyss Institute to verify that we can generate antibodies and cellular responses specifically against E. coli bacteria. In addition, we have conducted feasibility studies in an animal model for rUTI developed at the Wyss Institute. Currently we are testing our UTI Vaccine in a program sponsored by the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Disease (NIAID) in an established and validated rodent model.

We (myself and four other Wyss/Harvard Scientists) are currently raising funds with the intention of starting a new company and complete the preclinical and chemistry. Manufacturing and Controls (CMC) activities that would the filing of an Investigational New Drug (IND) application. This IND would allow us to demonstrate the safety and efficacy of our vaccine platform in Human Clinical trials.

MC: How is the Wyss team applying the OMNIVAX technology for the development of a vaccine for SARS-CoV-2? At what stage is this research?ED: Our work with SARS-CoV-2 began in April when all of the Harvard/Wyss laboratories were shut down except for COVID-related projects. In response to the global crisis and to demonstrate how quickly we can address new pathogen targets three to four of the infection team worked throughout the four-month shut down and made significant progress. We incorporated seven different combinations of COVID related proteins into our vaccine platform and vaccine animals in the first week of the shutdown. We quickly demonstrated the ability generate significantly high antibody titers against the targeted antigen, except one. Based on these results we reached out to collaborators in the Boston area and they were impressed enough to offer antibody neutralization testing, which was also very impressive. We are currently moving to the hamster challenge model to demonstrate efficacy and have applied for grants to support non-human primate studies. Updated efficacy and duration data will be published soon. Much like the rUTI application, we would have to complete the pre-clinical and CMC work to move to human trials, which would be the main focus of the start-up company.

MC: Can you discuss the safety of the OMNIVAX technology?ED: The vaccine platform has consistently generated a very good safety profile in all of the animal studies conducted over the last four years. These studies have evaluated numerous combinations of antigens and adjuvants in a rodent, rabbit, porcine, and bovine animal models. The site of injection, organs and general health of all animals has demonstrated a high degree of safety. The injected vaccine does create a small bump under the skin, which then expands slightly as the immune cells are recruited and fill the scaffold. We sometimes think of this type of vaccine as infection mimicking, so some swelling of the injection site is expected and encouraged. The components are ultimately metabolized and the MSRs degrade and the injection site resolves completely after 25-35 days. The good reactogenicity of our system may be related to the very small doses of both antigens and adjuvants contained within our vaccines. We are able to maximize immunogenicity without increasing the doses of higher reactive components to create a robust response. We are able to rely on the recruitment and cell trafficking to improve potency, not adding more antigen or adjuvant.

The biodegradable MSR material used in our vaccines is made from silica, which is approved for human consumption and utilized in many oral pharmaceuticals. There are numerous human clinical trials that have used silica for imaging or to delivery drugs, however the MSR configuration will are using will have to undergo the normal safety evaluation prior to use in human trials. Based on the 90 studies we have conducted, we have a great deal of confidence that we safety profile will be appropriate for human applications.

MC: What challenges exist when developing a technology such as OMNIVAX in an academic lab?ED: The Wyss Institute provides a unique advantage because they employ industry professionals like me to facilitate the development and de-risking of technologies such as OmniVax. The Wyss Institute hires scientists and engineers from industry to identify technologies and work with faculty to move beyond the academic level develop to a stage that is considerably more likely to be licensed, partnered, or spun out into a start-up company.

The OmniVax team at the Wyss Institute consists of professionals that have backgrounds in cGMP manufacturing, microbiology, immunology, infectious disease, analytical testing, protein chemistry, material science, drug delivery and business development. This team worked very closely with Mooney and his students at Harvards School of Engineering and Applied Sciences to better understand the mechanism and many based science questions. At the same time, the Wyss Institute team was investigating improved characterization methods, material sources, regulatory strategy, animal models, applications, safety profiles and business opportunities required to commercialize the technology. This combination of academic brain power and industry experience used at the Wyss Institute, creates a special atmosphere of collaboration, creativity and translation that enables success. We noticed that there is a chance that the pandemic may have begun to change the minds of many to believe that vaccines are critical for public health.

The ocean carries ‘Memories’ of SARS-CoV-2 – Deccan Herald

The memories that we humans encode and store in the neuronal networks of our brains are fundamental to our existence as individuals and as collective societiesfor the recalling of those memories, especially during times of stress, can help us to anticipate and shape the future for our own well-being.

But we are not the only ones to benefit from the capacity to remember, nor are human memories the only ones from which we can benefit. Animals across a wide spectrum provide clear evidence of memory retention, and, perhaps surprisingly, so do plants, microorganisms and inanimate systems (think, artificial intelligence), all of which lack a neuronal brain yet can function within their own networks as entities with agency and memory. In these cases, as in neuronal life, memory expresses itself through priming and triggering events that cause the organism or the system to respond in a way that improves overall fitness.

Now consider the Earths ocean, our blue planets dominant feature over deep time and space from its formation about 4.3 billion years ago to its greatest current depth of nearly 11,000 meters in the Challenger Deep in the Pacific. Every aspect of this vast oceanic system can be viewed as holding memory, from short-term to long-term, individualized to collective. For example, the cold, salty surface waters in polar regions that sink to form the rest of the deep sea (cold, dense water sinks) carry the memory of their initial interactions with the polar atmosphere in the form of a unique temperature/salinity signature for a thousand years, in the process keeping the ocean circulating globally for the benefit of all life on the planet.

The chemistry of the ocean also carries memory of the atmosphere of the carbon dioxide (and other gases) its waters have exchanged with the air, which can be stored at depth in the solid form of calcium carbonate for tens to hundreds of years, ready to be redissolved with the right priming or triggering event (anthropogenic inputs), in the process helping to regulate whether the ocean remains at a neutral pH or becomes acidic (which can harm many forms of life).

The geological formations at and below the seafloor today, particularly where volcanic processes are at work (think, hydrothermal vents), hold the longest-term memories of the hot waterrock reactions that may have spawned the first stirrings of life on the planet and continue to provide carbon and energy resources to life in the ocean.

And, of course, todays ocean is filled with life more life than land can support. And this life encodes memories of its ancestors and of earlier oceanic conditions in its genetic information, the DNA and the RNA that directs the production of protein and the other building blocks of life.

Inherent to all of this life is the entity we call a virus. We are not the only ones to experience viral infection and pandemics; infective viruses exist for every living organism, from the smallest of bacteria to the largest of marine mammals in the ocean. Some infections are lethal to the host, others neutral or even beneficial; humans have an ancient retrovirus to thank for the evolution of the mammalian placenta, for example (the placental wall is constructed of a retrovirus protein).

Lethal viruses can cause whole populations to crash (think, starfish along the USWest Coast, or phytoplankton blooms in the ocean), but, importantly, they can recover due to genetic memories held by an individual organism or the collective ecosystem. To fully understand the origins of the coronavirus that has spread in human societies across the globe and transformed the nature of human health, society and connectivity, we look to a source few have discussed: the ocean and the memories it holds.

We find that exploring ocean memories, from the scientifically demonstrable to the richly metaphorical, yields insights about this pandemic and the challenges of the Anthropocene, and suggest that such exploring within a fluid medium that knows no boundaries like those we construct may also help us to discover a sense of well-being, intimacy and connection that could lead to healthier and more equitable human societies.

RNA VIRUSES

Unlike many viruses that encode their genetic information as DNA, the SARS-CoV-2 virus of todays pandemic is an RNA virus, relying upon only RNA-encoded genes to take over the host cells it infects and direct its own reproduction. A growing body of gene-based evidence from the new discipline of paleoviromics points to an ancient common ancestor for all RNA viruses, one that originated and diverged genetically in the ocean before jumping to land during the early evolution of terrestrial animals and plants. This evidence implies that RNA viruses took root on the planet shortly after the ocean first formed, in settings that enabled what is called the primordial RNA world.

This relatively chaotic world is hypothesized to have preceded the DNA world and the first cellular organisms, such that RNA viruses have been termed relics of the primordial RNA world. The ocean, with its contemporary seafloor settings that themselves are relics of the early ocean, thus holds the memory of the earliest lineage of RNA viruses, one that eventually led to the coronaviruses that plague humans today.

When did the earliest coronavirus arise, and who were its hosts? The answer to the first part of the question is not well constrained, as estimates range from 10 thousand to 300 million years ago. But this span encompasses a time when the earliest mammals coexisted with dinosaurs (end of the Triassic Period, around 200 million years ago) and when large and diverse mammal species emerged following the demise of the dinosaurs (during the Cenozoic, 60 million years ago). Bats, recognized as the present-day source of most coronaviruses, have been observed in fossil records that date to 5060 million years ago.

The answer to the second part of the question begs analysis of genomic material. Comparative gene-sequencing of the virally essential enzyme RNA polymerase, which enables the RNA virus to reproduce within host cells, has revealed how these viruses have coevolved with their hosts and transformed over millennia, much as DNA sequencing has revealed the same about their hosts.

RNA viruses in todays vertebrates are no different in reflecting the evolutionary history of their hosts. The picornavirus supergroup of RNA viruses, which encompasses the coronavirus, is remarkable for the wide range of hosts its viruses can infect, from single-celled protists (phytoplankton of the surface ocean) to invertebrates, vertebrates and plants. From this perspective, host jumping by RNA viruses is not unexpected.

VALUABLE VIRAL MISTAKES

The essential functions of storage, pruning and priming of memories that occur in all systems the ocean, viruses and humanity alike sustain some memories while erasing others, better preparing for the future. For viruses, the sustaining and erasing of memories occurs genetically through an enzymatic process (actions of the RNA polymerase) that is prone to mistakes mutations during replication. These mistakes lead to gene mismatches that help the virus avoid host defense mechanisms (that recognize infecting sequences and disable them) and thus enable evolutionary advantage, including access to new hosts.

In the ocean, the best-known host systems for RNA viruses are the single-celled algae, particularly diatoms, but other phytoplankton and protists serve similarly. As an RNA virus reproduces within the host, it mutates 0.010.1 percent of the time, a rate about a thousand times higher than that of a DNA virus. Each infected cell, therefore, produces a mutant cloud of 1,0005,000 quasispecies of viruses, which means that an infected phytoplankton bloom in the ocean will be filled with billions of these mutant viral quasispecies. Molecular methods have confirmed the presence of such high numbers of quasispecies in viral populations, including in the ocean, and particularly for RNA viruses with smaller genomes (which include coronaviruses).

The existence of these mutant clouds not only increases the genetic flexibility of viruses and thus their ability to overcome host resistance, but also enables viruses to jump to other hosts. At the same time, better-prepared hosts those with genetic memories of how to defend against viruses survive the population-level infection; in the ocean, for example, the seasonal cycle of spring phytoplankton blooms continues.

One can examine the sequenced genome of any living organism and recognize the presence of virally introduced genes, a measure of past relationships with viruses. But in many cases, the viral relationship to the host is simply unknown. Some 44 percent of human genes are transposable elements jumping genes that can change position in a genome. A remarkable one-fifth of those genes, or 8 percent of the human genome, are derived from retroviruses. By far, most of these grafted-on pieces of us are of unknown function for us.

Life is not definable simply by singular units like genomes or cells, but rather by a dynamic network of relationships and communications among individuals, populations and their viruses, a network that ultimately connects the entirety of our planet.

Living in the midst of this pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 has prompted a global rethinking of many things, including human super connectivity, the enhanced vulnerabilities that brings, and what activities can be considered essential to our well-being. As we navigate this pandemic, long-standing, siloed social movements, such as the Movement for Black Lives, have burst into a larger global consciousness showing common themes even amid diverse circumstances. Interactive relationships between the spread of a virus and movements for social justice may be complex, but they are not trivial.

The oceanic origins of the early RNA virus thus offer us both a deeper scientific understanding of the behaviour of SARS-CoV-2, and an open space for creative inquiry: How might the current rapid social uprising and transformation mimic that early, messy, primordial RNA world, where information exchange was rampant and where big changes stemmed from unexpected sources?

OCEAN DISTANCING

The microorganisms that fill the ocean, from the smallest (less than one micrometre) marine bacteria to the larger diatoms (up to 200 micrometres) and other phytoplankton that generate blooms over extensive areas of the ocean (visible by satellite), are well-known for intensive relationships with their own viruses; microbes are easier to study than vertebrates. Not only do they suffer viral pandemics that crash a population when it gets too dense (at the end of a bloom, for example), but they have also acquired numerous helpful genes, known as auxiliary metabolic genes, from their viral relationshipsgenes that are retained by the host for improved fitness.

Such gene-information exchange represents just one element of the highly evolved communication systems used by marine bacteria, in particular, to networkto exchange information and regulate their own activities, accomplishing much of the biogeochemical cycling (and pollution mediation) that has occurred throughout the entirety of the oceans history.

This microbial life in the ocean has limits on its super connectivity or runaway networking. Marine bacteria live and die in a balance dictated by available nutritional resources and potential predators, especially viral infectors, all dependent on diffusion through the fluid medium of seawater. This balance is sustained in part through cooperative chemical signalling among bacterial neighbours, a form of social communication called quorum sensing by microbiologists.

When the density of bacteria gets high enough for their chemical signals to reach each others diffusional spheres of influence (about 10 micrometres from the cell surface, or 10 times its diameter), then quorum sensing takes effect. With quorum reached and sensed, communities of networking bacteria pause their growth and shift gears to other life strategies, including attaching to a surface or becoming sessile, reminiscent of human shelter in place strategies of recent months.

The ocean can thus be seen as the original social medium and marine bacteria as having highly evolved social practices of community-alert messaging that leads to physical distancing. This ocean style of physical distancing enables communities to be smart about both resource use and viral safety, for viral infection requires contact, and contact rate is reduced as organism density drops.

Mobile hosts like us, and the bat hosts before us, are the metaphorical seas and oceans in which viruses like SARS-CoV-2 persist. In order to make contact with the next host they must hitch a ride in the tiny droplets of sea aerosols that people exhale or cough up. In doing so, these viruses become embodied within an individuals own fluid networks, connected to their own cells, but extendable to other human spaces through relationships, chance encounters and other communications.

All organisms employ a suite of tools to communicate at a molecular level, with chemistry (as in quorum-sensing) serving to accomplish this metabolic diplomacy across habitat boundaries. Usually, an endless stream of communications provides a general sense of equilibrium, but imbalances or irregularities in the network can emerge, demanding correction.

Sometimes the correction yields chaotic behaviour, as in the jump by the coronavirus from bats to humans evolutionary relationships have shown that such jumps are enabled by mistakes that enabled infection of a new host.

The chaos represents the making of a new memory, which will script itself into possibly both the viral and the human genome, towards a new equilibrium. As humans are tumbling towards a new social equilibrium with laws and public opinion mutating rapidly the virus continues to race through and change within human bodies.

OUR OCEANS, THIS VIRUS, THIS MOMENT

The human toll of this pandemic is devastating. This virus has exposed and amplified existing societal inequities, as well as the effects of human encroachment on the Earths biosphere. But no single act of negligence created this pandemic; collective human behaviour did.

SAR-CoV-2 is just a virus behaving like a virus, exposing and amplifying existing aspects of the distributed life of this moment: a high population density of humans that is hyperconnected and capable of propagating viral spread stealthily, with impacts that may not be recognizable for weeks.

Despite the omnipresent war rhetoric surrounding the pandemic, SAR-CoV-2 is not a warrior; it is a virus in search of a means to continue evolving. This particular coronavirus has simply taken advantage of anthropogenic bridges connecting previously stable, isolated habitats, in the process disrupting the existing equilibrium with consequences dreadful for humankind.

At the same time, the initial quieting of human activity cleaned the air and caused a noted emergence of wildlife. For some, it also reactivated an individual capacity that the superconnected world otherwise shuns: listening to the rich tapestry of birdsong, the systemically silenced voices, the ecological potential of an individual action.

As the novel coronavirus becomes more familiar to the human body, it offers a memory of the deep connection that human evolution all life has to early ocean history. Might a shared focus on the surfacing of entrenched memories of human evolution, systemic racism and the trauma in individual lives lost galvanize humanity towards collective change that is mindful of our history and ecology?

Is there a way for us to search individually and collectively for ways to shift the paradigm from ego to eco? From separated humans, fearful of each other and of nature, to an ecologically entangled sense of self? And what will be encountered on such a search? Pruned memories, lost archives, oceanic embedded histories that have largely escaped awareness? Like ocean memory itself, metaphor and scientific precision need not be in contradiction. Invoking ocean memory as a guide towards thoughtful interconnectivity might make all the difference to how we interpret past events to anticipate the future, shape new memories to serve that future, and survive our own Anthropocene.

Anatomy of a Scandal: Everything We Know So Far About the New Anthology Series – What’s on Netflix

Anatomy of a Scandal book

Netflix has greenlit Anatomy of a Scandal, an anthology series from the creator of HBOs Big Little Lies David E. Kelley and former House of Cards showrunner Melissa James Gibson. The first season will be based on the 2017 novel of the same name by Sarah Vaughan. Each season is set to explore a different large-scale public scandal. Heres what we know so far.

The series was first announced via a Netflix press release back in May 2020. The series comes from 3dot Productions who are also currently working on a U.S. Womens Soccer documentary.

Netflix has ventured into anthology series before with the most notable ones being Black Mirror (currently on hold) and The Haunting of Hill House (and Bly Manor due out in October)

Attached to the project is director S.J. Clarkson, who directed episodes for HBOs Succession and the unaired Game of Thrones pilot and Netflixs Jessica Jones and Orange is the New Black. Clarkson was nominated for a Gold Derby award for the latter.

The original 2017 novel by Sarah Vaughan tells the story of two women and one man caught up in a very ugly public scandal. James, a high-ranking Westminster politician stands accused of rape, but his wife Sophie believes he is innocent. Kate is the barrister prosecuting the case and she is convinced James is guilty and must pay for his crime. Not everything is crystal clear in this court case and that complicates things for everyone. The plot tackles such things as marriage in an extremely turbulent situation and tense courtroom drama.

Sienna Miller and Michelle Dockery

Currently no cast members are officially announced for the first season of Anatomy of a Scandal. That being said, Recapped, a very reliable source that has never been wrong before, claims that the two leads have already been cast.

According to them, Sophie and Kate will be played by BAFTA and Golden Globes nominee Sienna Miller, known for her roles in American Sniper and G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra and Primetime Emmy Awards nominee Michelle Dockery, who is known for her roles in such series as ITVs Downton Abbey and Netflixs Godless. At the moment, we dont know which one of them plays Sophie and which one is Kate.

The first season of Anatomy of a Scandal will have six one-hour episodes.

Production for Anatomy of a Scandal is currently planned to begin in Fall 2020 at Shepperton Studios, UK.

While no dates have been announced or even hinted at, based on the production schedule, episode count and production complexity (no high-budget VFX required), we can assume Anatomy of a Scandal might be released on Netflix in Summer/Fall 2021.

The Anatomy of a SaaS Attack: Catching and Investigating Threats with AI – Infosecurity Magazine

Whether planned and executed over time or forced overnight by the global pandemic, the worlds digital transformation has prompted a surge in the use of Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) solutions in organizations across the globe. The annual growth rate of the SaaS market iscurrently 18%, and as the global workforce becomes increasingly remote throughout 2020, this figure is only set to skyrocket.

SaaS solutions have been an entry point for cyber-attackers for some time but little attention is given to how the Techniques, Tools & Procedures (TTPs) in SaaS attacks differ significantly from traditional TTPs seen in networks and endpoint attacks.

This raises a number of questions for security experts: how do you create meaningful detections in SaaS environments that dont have endpoint or network data? How can you investigate threats in a SaaS environment? What does a good SaaS environment look like as opposed to one thats threatening? A global shortage in cyber skills already creates problems for finding security analysts able to work in traditional IT environments hiring security experts with SaaS domain knowledge is all the more challenging.

Meanwhile, SaaS consumers are left with limited options: use the native SaaS security controls provided in each SaaS solution and risk a lack of security maturity or go with a third-party SaaS security solution, often in the form of Cloud Access Security Brokers (CASBs). Both options are not without their security risks.

Here are two examples of attacks recently detected by AI in SaaS environments that are representative of the broader SaaS threat landscape, and illuminate the sharp distinction between a traditional network attack and a SaaS compromise.

Office365 Business email compromise

In what amounted to a classic business email compromise (BEC), an attacker infiltrated an employees Microsoft 365 account to access sensitive financial documents hosted in SharePoint, including pay slip and banking details. Having gained initial entry, the attacker proceeded to make configuration changes to the inbox, deleting items and making updates that would enable them to cover their tracks.

The employees account login was first observed from unusual IP ranges. The account in question had never logged in from Bulgaria before, and the peer accounts belonging to those from the same department had not exhibited similar behavioral traits. This in itself was a low-level anomaly and not necessarily indicative of malicious activity after all, in the context of an increasingly distributed workforce, employees might change locations frequently.

Yet the unusual login location was accompanied by an unusual login time and a new User-Agent. All of these anomalies called for a deeper analysis. It was then identified that the account was starting to access highly sensitive information, including payroll information on a Sharepoint.

The attacker tried to gain insights about payment information and credit card details, with the likely intention of changing the payroll details to an attacker-controlled bank account.

AI-powered security technology was able to put together these weak signals of a threat and illuminate the likely account compromise. The companys security team was then able to lock the account and alert the user, who subsequently changed their credentials.

Box.com Compromise

At a global supply company, unauthorized access to an employees Box.com file storage account was detected. The login took place in the US where the company does operate but from an unusual IP space and ASN. AI began to investigate the users activity.

The actor behind the account logged in to Box.com successfully, and proceeded to download expense reports, invoices, and other financial documents. These were files that were highly unusual for the account to access.

Cyber AI also found that the activity occurred at a highly unusual time for the legitimate user, and the location of the actors IP address was anomalous compared to the employees previous access locations for this particular SaaS service.

An understanding of user behavior and granular visibility within the Box.com application allowed the company to spot the subtle signs of account compromise. Moreover, AI-powered investigation outlined the narrative in its entirety, showing how each unauthorized file exposure was part of a connected incident and a key concern for the security team.

A new era in SaaS domain defense

Ultimately, traditional detection approaches with hard and fast rules for how SaaS domains should operate are not enough to ensure that SaaS applications remain secure. Keeping threat intelligence lists up to date is even more difficult, as most SaaS attacks dont involve any Command & Control just indiscriminate logins from remote devices. When it comes to points of entry for SaaS attacks, the possibilities are endless: VPN, Tor, other compromised devices, dynamic DNS or even virtual private servers for attackers to cover their tracks.

A more intricate and effective approach to SaaS security requires an understanding of the dynamic individual behind the account. SaaS applications are fundamentally platforms for humans to communicate allowing them to exchange and store ideas and information.

Abnormal, threatening behavior is therefore impossible to detect without a nuanced understanding of those unique individuals: where and when do they typically access a SaaS account, which files are they like to access, who do they typically connect with? As the attacks outlined serve to demonstrate, these are questions for an AI brain to contend with.

6 ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Storylines Affected by the Planned Season 17 Time Jump – TVInsider

Grey's Anatomy is going to be including the coronavirus in its upcoming 17th season, and the latest details reveal that in doing so, the premiere will pick up "a month and a half into full COVID."

While production shut down on Season 16 four episodes early, the finale did leave a few storylines up in the air. What we see next from at least some of them will be affected by this time jump, whether it's how it plays out onscreen, like for the relationships of Drs. Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) and Teddy Altman (Kim Raver), or what we'll now have to learn via flashbacks or in conversations, like Drs. Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone) and Atticus "Link" Lincoln (Chris Carmack) naming their baby.

Grey's Anatomy, Season 17, Fall 2020, ABC

As Season 16 came to an end, Teddy and Dr. Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) were about to get married until he learned of her affair with ex-boyfriend Dr. Tom Koracick (Greg Germann) via a voicemail she accidentally left him. He postponed the ceremony, ostensibly for work, but withGreys now picking up a month and a half later, Teddy will have to already know that Owen knows about Tom and the immediate fallout of that will have happened off-screen.

But how will quarantining and taking care of patients at the hospital affect the doctors? Will Teddy and Owen be living together with the kids? Will one be quarantining separately for the rest of the familys health and safety? Will there be some personal revelations as a result of whats happening in the world? Could personal relationships have been put on hold by the time we catch up to the doctors in the premiere? We likely wont be able to determine whats happened based on rings (or lack thereof), considering the doctors will be wearing PPE (personal protective equipment) at the hospital.

Meredith and Dr. Andrew DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti) hit a rough patch in Season 16, and at the end of the finale, his mental health was more important than their relationship status. But the hospitals new doctor, Cormac Hayes (Richard Flood), was also set up as a potential love interest for Meredith after Cristina sent him to her as a gift.

Flood has been promoted to series regular for Season 17, suggesting that there could be a full-blown love triangle coming. But with the time jump and the coronavirus storyline, chances are that what each doctor is doing to help and where theyre quarantining will be a factor in where we find the relationships in the premiere. Are Meredith and Hayes able to stay with their kids? Is DeLuca with Meredith or perhaps with his sister, Dr. Carina DeLuca (Stefania Spampinato, now a series regular onStation 19)? That may depend on the next storyline

The spinoff saw Carina telling her girlfriend, firefighter Maya Bishop (Danielle Savre), my dad has bipolar I, and my sweet baby brother has inherited it. Over onGreys, he hadnt received a diagnosis yet, and Carina had only suspected the reason for his recent behavior.

Well likely skip even more of that storyline, including what happened when Meredith took him home at the end of the finale, by picking up a month and half later. Sure, there could be some flashbacks, but those would be to provide context for what we see play out in the present-day scenes.

In the finale, Amelia gave birth to her and Links son, but his name wasnt revealed. With the month and a half jump, that boy is going to already have a name, so well miss out on that conversation onscreen (and a flashback after its revealed probably wont be the same), as well as the days following them bringing him home from the hospital.

Last season, Dr. Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary) reconnected with Dr. Winston Ndugu at a medical conference, and after that one episode, Anthony Hill has been upped to series regular for Season 17. That suggests that Winston does in fact make the move to Seattle that hed said he would. Their (potential) relationship had taken a backseat when her father, Dr. Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.), fell ill and everyone worked together to determine his diagnosis.

With the time jump, we could possibly see Winston already in Seattle, instead of watching his arrival and what that means for him and Maggie play out onscreen in the beginning. Could they already be together when we see them for the first time in the premiere?

Richard and Dr. Catherine Foxs (Debbie Allen) marriage fell apart (making for a very awkward dinner) last season, but as he began his recovery from cobalt poisoning (as a result of a hip replacement), she had had a change of heart. The only problem is he hadnt. But just like his medical crisis led to her thinking about their future, might the coronavirus pandemic do the same for either of them?
