Although the problem is slowly being addressed, McKinley-Grant says it is crucial that health care providers are trained in recognizing diseasesand subtle changesin all skin types.

Almost every mother, regardless of the ethnicity or age of her child, can tell when they are pale and not feeling well, she says. The underlying hues of the skin are not only the result of the presence of melanin, but also reflect red blood cell counts and oxygen levelsmeasures that are vital signs for all humans. We need to train our health care providers to recognize changes in hue in all skin types, including the skin of Black and brown people.

When we invite people for lectures or to contribute to a textbook or health care literature, she adds, we need to start making it almost mandatory that they show a diversity of ethnicity and skin color in the presentation, with images of disease in black and brown skin.

Rashes that may look red on a light-skinned patient tend to appear darker brown or purple on brown or black skin. Anemia appears as gray on dark skin rather than ghostly pale on light skin, while the darkening of skin associated with hyperpigmentation, itself a sign of Addisons disease and other conditions, may go unnoticed on dark skin. For inflammation, says McKinley-Grant, its important to ask the patient where the warmth and pain is and whether the area in question looks like their normal skin color.

Dermatologists also discern problems in people with darker skin tones by looking for patterns. Pattern recognition is a huge part of our training, says Freeman. We get 12,000 to 16,000 hours of supervised patient care. That allows us to learn to recognize patterns. So if you see a pattern but dont know how to interpret it, call a dermatologist.

That may be easier said than done these days. Since 1999, American Academy of Dermatology surveys have steadily shown that skin doctors themselves report there are not enough of them to go around, especially with the increasing demands on the profession as a result of population aging and rising rates of skin cancer and other cutaneous diseases.

Dermatology is one of the highest paying fields of medicine, and it has one of the lowest burnout rates. The ever-increasing market for cosmetic dermatologywhich is paid for out-of-pockethas put an even greater burden on residency programs.

At Harvard, 70 percent of our residents stay in medical or academic dermatology, says Freeman, but were probably the only school in the country with that statistic. Not everyone who wants to is able to match into the field, and these are really good students. Its common to take a year off from medical school and do a year of dermatological research just to get in.

Many schools are combining residencies in internal medicine and dermatology. Dermatologists look at a rash and then develop a differential diagnosis, then ultimately get a history, says Loscalzo. Internists do just the opposite, gathering a lot of history, looking at all aspects of the patients physical exam, and then trying to correlate whats going on with the skin to whats happening internally. Its a totally different heuristic, and a combined residency is a great way to learn both worlds.

To train AI at high levels of accuracy, you need an enormous collection of photos, and even the largest dermatology photo libraries dont have standardized diagnoses where a group of dermatologists agree.

Continuing medical education, workshops, and events like Mass Generals annual Dermatology Bootcamp, hosted by Kourosh, are helping to bridge the gap. Through programs like this, dermatologists at HMS are always more than ready to teach and give lectures to other providers and trainees in our hospital system and the community, Kourosh says.

In addition, the use of telehealth has helped extend expertise. Although its use increased 53 percent between 2016 and 2017, according to a 2019 article from the American Medical Association, its use has expanded again. Earlier this year, the AMA detailed extensive changes to telehealth, all allowed for in the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act of 2020. Among those changes: expanding the list of services that can be delivered remotely, ensuring payment of physician fees for those services, and updating the requirements for accessing remote care to permit physicians to conduct telehealth visits from their homesand patients to access them from theirs.

These changes have been especially useful for dermatology and are increasing access to health care in all specialties, particularly for underserved patients in rural areas and elsewhere, for members of the military, and, during this pandemic, for patients sheltering in place, says McKinley-Grant.

Apps and artificial intelligence also hold promise, though, according to Kourosh and others they have a long way to go. To train AI at high levels of accuracy, Kourosh says, you need an enormous collection of photos, and even the largest dermatology photo libraries dont have standardized diagnoses where a group of dermatologists agree. Add to that the dearth of patients of color represented in most collections. Multiple efforts are being made now to do this correctly and safely for patients, but it may take years, she adds.

Until then, internists, primary care doctors, and other specialists remain patients first line of defense. Its true that time is a bigger limitation than in the past, admits Loscalzo, but if youre not carefully considering skin symptoms, youre not being a thorough physician.

Osteopore to work with Singapore medical school on 3D printed jaws – Stockhead

Osteopore (ASX:OSX) has signed a research collaboration agreement with the National University of Singapore Yong Loo Lin School of Medicines Department of Surgery and the National University Hospital (NUH) to investigate the potential for using its 3D printed implants in reconstructing lower jawbones.

Patients may need mandibular reconstruction from bone loss due to trauma or disease, and while there are treatments available, including grafts, they can lead to post-surgical complications and donor site morbidities.

There are an estimated two or three mandibular reconstructions per week at NUH, Osteopore says.

Osteopore, the Department of Surgery at NUS Yong Loon Lin School of Medicine and NUH Department of Surgery will work together on a preliminary study to see if Osteopores 3D printed products could be combined with bone marrow aspirates to regrow bone.

Osteopore says its implants have a unique advantage in that they are bioresorbable and can be custom manufactured to fit each patient.

The main objective of the collaboration is to gain pre-clinical data for the evaluation of future studies.

The project has a long development pathway and theres no guarantee the company will be able to successfully commercialise the mandible products, Osteopore warned.

As previously reported, Osteopore has added the Australian Therapeutics Goods Administration (TGA) to its pool room shelf of regulators who think its bone healing products, in this case for the skull and face, are worthy of joining the Australian market.

The Singapore-based medical device company is commercialising a range of 3D printed bioresorbable scaffolds for regenerative bone healing, and in this case for use as bone void fillers.

The TGA has approved for use in Australia the Osteomesh, Osteoplug, and Osteoplug-C products, which European and US regulators have already done, together with Singapore and other East Asian regulatory clearances.

Nope, Fort Worth and Texas officials are more than a little gleeful as they seem on the verge of filling the former FAA headquarters with another aviation-related company with the hope of bringing more than 500 corporate jobs. The city seemed at least to have the pretense of going through the motions of setting things up for the company to make the move. The news release from Gov. Greg Abbotts office made it sound like all 500 employees were already here and ordering another round of margaritas at Joe Ts.

Not quite yet, but still, its good news for a year where the business world is all about survival, not expansion and growth. This is a good sign.

Aviation-related company eyes Fort Worth for key expansion

Speaking of survival, the very popular Preserve the Fort grant campaign is up and running again.

Almost $9 million is available to businesses through these grants, which are funded by part of the City of Fort Worths CARES Act allocation, the city said in a news release.

Thanks to the success of the first round of Preserve the Fort grants earlier this summer, the citys Economic Development Department and United Way of Tarrant County have expanded the grant criteria to include slightly larger businesses with up to 500 employees, in addition to smaller for-profit businesses and self-employed individuals/independent contractors. It could be a life saver.

It was also a good day for the TCU and UNTHSC School of Medicine.

The late Anne Marion and the Burnett Foundation have made a $25 million gift to establish The Anne W. Marion Endowment in support of the operations of the TCU and UNTHSC School of Medicine in perpetuity.

This transformational gift will provide funds to support students, faculty and programming for the medical school, the school said in a news release.

Meet the top doctors leading IU’s COVID-19 health, safety efforts – IU Newsroom

As home to the largest medical school in the country, as well as leading voices in medical research and clinical care, Indiana University didn't have to look far for expert guidance in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

At the request of IU President Michael A. McRobbie, the university formed its Medical Response Team for COVID-19 over the summer to plan and implement ongoing health and safety strategies to protect students, faculty and staff and to help campus leadership make decisions informed by expert analysis and knowledge of clinical care and public health.

With the fall semester now in full swing, the team meets daily and regularly reviews data and reports on a multitude of factors -- including testing results, contact tracing efficiency and response, outbreak mitigation efforts, and logistical concerns -- that help IU take swift action to limit the spread of COVID-19 among students, faculty and staff.

"All decisions are viewed through the lens of a composite of metrics that attempt to understand the internal burden of disease, the external burden in the surrounding communities, how effective we are at controlling the virus locally and the availability of resources to keep the IU community safe," said Dr. Cole Beeler, an IU School of Medicine faculty member and one of three physician leaders of the IU Medical Response Team. "We are working every day to make sure IU can continue to provide the education and research services that our students and state rely on us for as safely as possible."

The overall work of the Medical Response Team is divided into three areas: symptomatic testing, contact tracing and mitigation testing. Each area has its own leader and core team members responsible for coordinating COVID-19 prevention and mitigation efforts across all campuses.

Beeler is the director of symptomatic testing for the IU Medical Response Team. He is also an assistant professor of clinical medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the IU School of Medicine and medical director of infection prevention at IU Health University Hospital in Indianapolis, where he cares for patients and has a clinic.

Beeler, who grew up in Indiana, completed his college, medical school, residency and fellowship training at IU.

Dr. Adrian Gardner is the director of contact tracing for the IU Medical Response Team. He is also associate dean for global health at the IU School of Medicine, as well as director of the IU Center for Global Health and executive director of the Academic Model Providing Access to Healthcare Consortium of North American academic health centers.

Gardner earned his medical degree from Brown University, completed a fellowship in infectious diseases at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, and earned a Master of Public Health from the Harvard School of Public Health.

He joined IU in 2012 as the executive field director of the AMPATH Consortium and was based full time in Eldoret, Kenya, for seven years. During his time in this role, Gardner worked closely with Kenyan program leadership to make strategic investments and policy decisions to improve community health, provide the best care for patients and control infectious diseases such as HIV.

Dr. Aaron Carroll is director of mitigation testing for the Medical Response Team. He is also a Regenstrief Foundation Professor I, associate dean for research mentoring, a Bicentennial Professor and professor of pediatrics at the IU School of Medicine. Carroll is a health-related research writer for The New York Times and blogs on health research and policy at The Incidental Economist.

Carroll completed medical school at the University of Pennsylvania, a residency at the University of Washington and a fellowship through the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholars Program.

These physicians, along with those on their core teams and IU leaders, review data and the current status of symptomatic testing, contact tracing and mitigation testing multiple times a week to ensure the university is operating in a way that keeps its students, faculty and staff as safe as possible.

"There's never one thing we're focused on; it's always a number of metrics and data sets," Beeler said. "With a pandemic and a complex population like IU, one number or metric could never tell us the whole story. It's reviewing all the pieces we've put in place to manage the pandemic and seeing how each is performing individually but also how they're working together. It's this full picture with all of these moving parts that we use to determine if a change would need to be made for the health and safety of the university community."

IU maintains a COVID-19 dashboard that includes data, reviewed by the Medical Response Team, on mitigation testing and symptomatic testing. It's this data, along with the Medical Response Team's analysis, that allows IU to evaluate health and safety and adjust the university's strategy in order to minimize the spread of COVID-19.

Johnson (LBJ) School of Public Affairs at The University of Texas at Austin opened its doors to educate young people to become bold thinkers and doers. To commemorate President Lyndon Johnsons founding vision and to celebrate its 50thanniversary, the LBJ School will present two virtual forums showcasing prominent global leaders who personify Johnson and inspire the next generation to creatively take on the worlds most important challenges.

The forums, at 7 p.m. (CT) on Monday,Oct. 5,and Monday,Oct. 12, will explore big ideas and fresh solutions around todays most pressing issues, including racial justice and equality, voting rights and access, health care, jobs, education, immigration, the environment and the state of democracy all critical issues that LBJ took on as he implemented the most ambitious legislative agenda in modern history. Early Zoom calls revealed team chemistry that has powered Lynxs success – TwinCities.com-Pioneer Press

Crystal Dangerfield had met few of her first professional teammates in person. Instead, the meet and greets were taking place over Zoom thanks to the coronavirus.

That sets itself up for a less-than-ideal start to a WNBA career for a rookie point guard. But there was nothing awkward about it. Somehow, with a group of fresh faces who were hundreds to thousands of miles apart, the Lynx were gelling.

People were laughing, cracking jokes on each other, and just energy that way, Dangerfield said.

Napheesa Collier felt it, too. The chemistry was obvious to her, through the computer screen.

I really got along with everyone, I enjoyed talking with everyone on there, Collier said. So I knew from the beginning it was going to be really fun being around this group.

If you can bond over Zoom, you can probably do it in person, Dangerfield surmised. That proved true almost immediately. Players were in the Twin Cities the week prior to heading to the WNBA bubble in Florida. And while they werent able to work out together then, Collier noted they were hanging around one anothers workouts, chatting and hanging out around the facility.

I really liked who these people were as people, Collier said. So its always fun to have that chemistry going onto the court, and I guess it was kind of surprising that it translated so easily onto the court.

You never know if it will. Plenty of teams feature players that like one another, yet arent very good. Friends may not play well together. But as training camp commenced, evidence mounted that this group was going to work together.

Things are going to go wrong in training camps, particularly when players havent been able to play competitive basketball for months prior to camp. Lynx training camp was no different. Bad passes were made. Shots were missed.

What impressed Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve was the response to those situations.

I didnt have to coach them and say, Hey, when someone doesnt make a play, its not just one person. I didnt have to coach any of that, and body language, all of that was very natural to this group, Reeve said. They were good to each other. If somebody made a mistake, it was like, Lets pick you up and lets move on to the next one. You got this, all that good stuff. I would say it was those interactions.

Thats exactly what played out in games. The Lynx fell behind in games, it lost one important player after another, from Karima Christmas-Kelly for the season, to Sylvia Fowles for most of the season, to not having Odyssey Sims at the start of the campaign, to being without players such as Rachel Banham, Shenise Johnson and Lexie Brown intermittently. And it never mattered.

The Lynx continued to win, with new players stepping up and seizing opportunities at every step.

You saw it when we were down in games, when Im losing my mind about all thats happening wrong. They dont hear me, Reeve said. They find a way to just keep playing the next play. I think something that many, many people have commented on is that this group just keeps playing and theyve got a relentless way about them, and I do believe its because of how they feel about each other.

It all added up to the Lynx, considered a fringe playoff team at the start of the season, finishing 14-8 in the regular season to earn the No. 4 seed in the playoffs and a first-round bye in playoffs that began on Tuesday. Bridget Carleton thinks Minnesotas resilience and cohesiveness was a direct result of the teams chemistry.

We care about each other, we want each other to be successful, so we celebrate every little thing we can, Carleton said. We want to fight for each other, we want to do every little thing we can to help the person next to us. I think thats why weve been so resilient throughout the year, and that has helped us get to this point.

The Lynx held their annual end-of-regular-season get-together Monday night to celebrate the end of the regular campaign and look forward to whats to come.

It was so fun, Collier said.

Of course it was. Thats been the case for everything this team has done together this season.

I think every time this group gets together they just really enjoy one another, Reeve said. They believe in each other, and theyre excited about the opportunity for the 2020 playoffs.

The Anson Tigers are one of the handful of undefeated teams in the Big Country this year.

The Tigers lost star quarterback Drew Hagler to graduation heading into the 2020 season, and they are a little beat up right now.

No worries, though. Head coach Chris Haglers team is battling.

The offense is on another level.

The Tigers are averaging 39 points each game.

So, why the success?

Look off the field for the answers.

Hagler said, I tell you what, team chemistry, all the kids have been working hard together and they just seem a little more relaxed as weve gotten going. Its nice to get three wins under your belt. They werent pretty at all times but we somehow found a way to win. Weve taken care of the football, we havent turned it over too many times. Theres been a couple mistakes but nothing that we cant correct.

Dylyn Pyle said, The team chemistry, the bond with all of the guys, and the connections has just been great and I think thats what really helped us if anything. Its the next man up, you always stay with them. Family is family, were all brothers here.

It doesnt get easier this week.

Strange chemical in clouds of Venus defies explanation. Could it be a sign of life? – Space.com

Discovering life beyond Earth may well start with a sniff, a whiff of some chemical that scientists struggle to explain without invoking a strange, shadowy microbe. That first step has happened on Mars and on a few distant moons, and now, scientists suggest, on Venus.

A team of astronomers announced today (Sept. 14) that it has spotted the chemical fingerprint of phosphine, which scientists have suggested may be tied to life, in the clouds of the second rock from the sun. The finding is no guarantee that life exists on Venus, but researchers say it's a tantalizing find that emphasizes the need for more missions to the hot, gassy planet next door.

"The interpretation that it's potentially due to life, I think, is probably not the first thing I would go for," Victoria Meadows, an astrobiologist at the University of Washington who was not involved in the new research, told Space.com.

But it is an intriguing detection, she said, and one that emphasizes how we overlook our neighbor. "We have some explaining to do," she continued. "This discovery especially is just another reminder of how much more we have yet to learn about Venus."

The new research builds on the idea that, although the surface of Venus endures broiling temperatures and crushing pressures, conditions are much less harsh high up in the clouds. And scientists have realized that Earth's own atmosphere is full of tiny life. Suddenly, microbes in the sweet spot of Venus's atmosphere, where temperatures and pressures mimic those on Earth, don't seem quite so outlandish.

The scientists behind the new research wanted to look for phosphine. Researchers have recently wondered whether the chemical could be a good biosignature, a compound astronomers target in looking for life. It should break down quickly in atmospheres that are rich in oxygen, like those of Earth and Venus, and on Earth, when it isn't being made by human industrial processes, it seems to be found near certain kinds of microbes.

Jane Greaves, an astronomer at the University of Cardiff in the U.K. and lead author of the new research, realized that she could use a telescope she knew well to check for it in the atmosphere of Venus, she told Space.com.

"Looking for it in Venus might be really peculiar, but it's not hard to do and it wouldn't take that many hours of telescope time," Greaves said she thought at the time. "Why not give it a go?" So on five separate mornings in June 2017, the astronomers used the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope in Hawaii to stare at Venus.

And then the observations sat around on a computer for a year and a half, Greaves said, without her managing to find time to study them.

"I thought, well, just before we throw this away, I'll have a final go at [analyzing the data]," she said. "There was this line and it just wouldn't go away, and it seemed like it wasn't imaginary anymore. I was just completely stunned."

That line is one stripe of a spectrum, a chemical barcode that scientists can read in a telescope's observations of light. Each chemical has its own unique fingerprint of lines and blank spaces; match enough lines and you can identify a mystery substance.

But the observations in the new research focus on only one of the lines in phosphine's barcode, Meadows said, so she isn't quite convinced the new findings represent a conclusive identification of phosphine.

"Until we can go and get another piece of that barcode we can't discriminate between which kind of barcode we're looking at," Meadows said. "I think they make a good case for it being phosphine in there, but I think they don't have what I would consider a slam-dunk detection yet."

The researchers haven't tackled that aspect yet, but Greaves and her colleagues did arrange to use the Atacama Large Millimetre/submillimetre Array (ALMA) in March 2019 to look for the chemical again and make sure the detection wasn't just a telescopic hiccup.

ALMA gathered a few hours of data, which also revealed more phosphine than the scientists expected not a huge amount in the grand scheme of things, but about 20 particles out of every billion, according to the research.

"I was braced for disappointment, but it was amazing," Greaves said.

That abundance is significantly more phosphine than she had expected to see. The way the telescopes' observations work, the chemical must have been more than 30 miles (50 kilometers) above the Venusian surface. That's about the same altitude at which a different recent paper with some shared co-authors suggests microbial life could survive in spore form.

So Greaves and her colleagues set to work considering what might have created all that phosphine: Perhaps volcanoes erupting or lightning striking, or perhaps meteors melting in the atmosphere or winds pulling particles off the planet's surface. But none of these explanations seemed sufficient to them.

As usual, struggling to make more conventional explanations check out does not mean that scientists think they've found life. But the possibility of tiny Venusian bugs has gradually become more plausible and researchers focused on our neighboring world say that's important, whether or not there's actual life to find.

"Either it's a mistaken identity but we don't know what the chemical is, or some strange chemistry that we are not aware of or biology," Sanjay Limaye, an atmospheric scientist at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, who wasn't involved in the new research, told Space.com. "It's a question of if it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, walks like a duck, do you call it life or not? We won't know until we go there and find out."

As tantalizing as the detection of phosphine on Venus may be, scientists not involved with the new research worry that it makes a few big leaps, even before the massive potential implications of a detection of life.

Some were unconvinced that phosphine was a reliable fingerprint of living organisms. The single phosphorus molecule surrounded by three hydrogen molecules is, on Earth, a rarity and short-lived: some industrial processes produce it, and it's affiliated with some types of bacteria living in particularly strange environments. It quickly transforms in Earth's oxygen-rich atmosphere and should in that of Venus as well, which is intriguing for scientists looking for alien breath. But the excitement about phosphine may well be premature.

"The phosphine link to the biological world is very, very faint and needs to be corroborated simply by going to the lab and doing experiments," Tetyana Milojevic, a biochemist at the University of Vienna not involved in the new research, told Space.com.

She argues that phosphine has only been found near microbes, not produced by it, and that the compound seems to be released by the chemical decay of biological material. So before scientists can use phosphine as a potential biosignature, they need to get into the lab and really understand whether and how microbes produce phosphine, a process that scientists eyeing Mars completed for methane long ago.

Alas, those experiments aren't quite as simple for phosphine, Matthew Pasek, an astrobiologist and geochemist at the University of South Florida who has worked on phosphorus cycling issues but was not involved in the new research, told Space.com. "Phosphine is kind of nasty, so we don't like playing with it, so we don't actually understand how it gets made through natural processes very well," Pasek said. "It's always been kind of relegated to the background of phosphorus chemistry."

Greaves said that she's confident phosphine is a biosignature on Earth, but does hope that the scientific community can take on these sorts of lab experiments and otherwise build on her team's work.

The idea of phosphine as a biosignature may have another fatal flaw. Venus is no
w the fourth planet where scientists have detected phosphine: two gas giants and Earth. The new detection shows phosphine levels on Venus about equal to those on Jupiter and Saturn. But that's significantly more abundant 1,000 times more abundant than on Earth, Pasek said.

"For the one place that it is likely biological, there's a lot less of it even there," he said. "So it's kind of weird that if it is biology on Venus, that's a whole lot of phosphine that is generating for weird reasons."

It is Venus, after all our mysterious neighbor.

Greaves and her colleagues plan to continue studying Venus from the ground, although she said that the coronavirus pandemic has interfered with those observations. Meadows said she hopes for analysis that would cover some of those other lines in the phosphine barcode. And of course some of the phosphine investigations can be done right here in laboratories.

But the details of this massive puzzle aren't likely the sort of thing that can be seen clearly from the surface of Earth. And spacecraft tend to zip around Venus, keeping a safe distance from its hostile environments. Designing machinery that can withstand its clouds and surface is so difficult that no spacecraft has ventured into the atmosphere in decades.

"It should implore NASA and other space agencies to look at Venus as a target for astrobiology investigation, which means they should pump some money into the development of capable aerial platforms," Limaye said of the new research.

There's no shortage of ideas to choose from when it comes to dreamed-of Venus missions that could tackle the atmosphere, whether your taste runs to more traditional designs or unorthodox options like blimps, balloons or commercially built spacecraft.

"It's time to figure out Venus," James Garvin, a planetary scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland, who wasn't involved in the new research but is the principal investigator on a Venus atmospheric probe mission that NASA is evaluating, told Space.com. "If we ignore it too long, we could be missing the forest for the trees, and that would never be good."

He thinks engineering has caught up with the challenges of the Venusian atmosphere.

"The time is ripe for thinking about what the atmosphere is telling us within itself. It's just this beautiful laboratory next door that has been tough enough that we've ignored it for 35 years," Garvin said. "The atmosphere is kind of calling us, whispering in the night, 'Hey, I may have something that you should think about.' And we haven't been."

The research is described in a paper published today (Sept. 14) in the journal Nature Astronomy.

Not long after his arrival in Arizona, Hopkins went on to sign a lucrative two-year, $54.5 million contract extension which ties him with the team through the 2024 season. The All-Pro wideout showed in their opening game that he was worth all the big bucks that the front office recently handed to him.

Indeed, this is only the beginning of a promising partnership between Hopkins and Murray for the Cardinals moving forward.

Judge’s Ruling Linked To Disgraced Chemist May Pave Way To Reopen Thousands Of Mass. Cases – WBUR

A superior court judge has ordered a new trial for a man convicted of heroin possession in 2006. That ruling based on the judge's assertion that Massachusetts did not adequately investigate one of its highest-profile drug lab scandals could potentially pave the way for appeals in thousands of othercases in the state.

Last week, Middlesex Superior Court Judge Michael Ricciuti ordered a new trial for Eugene Sutton. The order came on the heels of an April ruling in which Ricciuti wrote that "justice was not done in this case."

The appeal focused on disgraced chemist Sonja Farak's time working at the state's Hinton State Laboratory in Boston. It questioned whether the state had done enough to examine her work there between2003 to 2005 after it was revealed, about a decade later, she had repeatedly used drugs at a state-run lab in western Massachusetts.

In 2014, Farak was convicted on drug charges after admitting to ingesting drugs she was supposed to be testing at the state-run lab in Amherst. The state dismissed thousands of cases she handled at that particular lab in the wake of her misconduct.

Jim McKenna, an attorney for Sutton, argued the state did not properly investigate Farak's work at Hinton.

Ricciuti's latest ruling confirmed that Sutton's conviction is vacated, making him eligible for a new trial. The commonwealth did not object, but the Middlesex district attorney's office did not say if it will pursue a new trial.

McKenna said there are likely thousands more that were affected by Farak's work in Boston.

"Farak tested more than 9,000 samples when she worked in Boston," Mckenna said. "So the same argument brought in my client's case could be brought in the case of each of the people who were convicted based on evidence entrusted to Sonja Farak at that lab."

Last year, State Supreme Judicial Court Associate Justice Scott Kafker agreed with a lower court ruling stating that Faraks Boston work should have been reviewed. Other judges also questioned the scope of the states drug lab investigation.

The Massachusetts Office of the Inspector General said it conducted a review, but has provided conflicting statements about its reach. In one court filing, the office said it had not conducted a thorough review of Farak or other chemists at the Hinton Lab.

McKenna said the government failed to act.

"The majority of those convicted are from minority communities," McKenna said. "I don't think it's a coincidence that there has been no real investigation as to whether these convictions are valid. I don't think this would have happened if the defendants were white and suburban."

Farak pleaded guilty to tampering with evidence and other drug charges and was sentenced to 18 months in jail. Her conviction followed another drug lab scandal at the Hinton Lab involving former chemist Annie Dookhan. In 2013, Dookhan was convicted of tampering with drug evidence. She was released from prison in 2016.

The Fashion for Good consortium has initiated Full Circle Textiles Project: Scaling Innovations in Cellulosic Recycling a first-of-its-kind consortium project. As much as 73% of clothing produced is sent to landfill or is incinerated, and of all new clothing made, less than 1% of material used comes from recycled sources. Focusing on cellulosic fibers, this project aims to validate and eventually scale promising technologies in chemical recycling from a select group of innovators to tackle these issues. Leading global organizations Laudes Foundation, Birla Cellulose, Kering, PVH Corp. and Target join Fashion for Good, to explore the disruptive solutions, with the goal of creating new fibers and garments from used clothing and ultimately drive industry-wide adoption.

The Projects overall aim is to investigate economically viable and scalable solutions for cellulosic chemical recycling to enable a closed loop system converting textile waste of cotton and cotton-blend materials, to produce new man-made cellulosic fibers.

Enablement and Definiteness of Broad, Generic Chemical Formulae – Past Informative PTAB Decisions – Lexology

Ex parte Hicks is a 2007 decision of the Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences (BPAI) that is listed among the Patent Trial and Appeal Boards (PTAB) informative decisions. Ex parte Hicks is indicated by the PTAB to be informative as to Specification and claim requirements 35 U.S.C. 112 Enablement Indefiniteness scope.

According to the PTABs Standard Operating Procedure, [i]nformative decisions set forth Board norms that should be followed in most cases, absent justification, although an informative decision is not binding authority on the Board.

In Ex parte Hicks, the BPAI considered whether a compound claim defined by a broad, generic chemical formula was properly enabled and definite.

Independent claim 23 was at issue:

A compound of the formula

wherein:

R2 is hydrocarbyl or substituted hydrocarbyl, provided that R2 is attached to said nitrogen atom in (II) by a carbon atom that has at least 2 other atoms that are not hydrogen attached to it; and

R3, R4, R5, R6 and R7 are each independently hydrogen, hydrocarbyl, substituted hydrocarbyl or a functional group, provided that any two of R3, R4, R5, R6 and R7 vicinal to one another taken together may form a ring;

L1 is a monodentate monoanionic ligand and L2 is a monodentate neutral ligand or an empty coordination site, or L1 and L2 taken together are a monoanionic bidentate ligand.

In rejecting the claim, the examiner focused on the broad scope of certain limitations (emphasized above) and the limited number of working examples in the specification.

As to enablement, the examiner conceded that the specification included some working examples of compounds within the scope of the claims and was enabling for at least those compounds. However, the examiner asserted that [t]here is no guidance or working examples present for compounds of the formula II with varying functional groups or ligands. As evidence that the claimed compounds could be made without undue experimentation, applicant provided the examiner with results of a Chemical Abstracts search, showing that synthesis of substituted aminotropones in which the nitrogen atom is a secondary amine was known in the art. The examiner argued that this evidence did not address the specifications deficiency in showing how to synthesize compounds within the scope of the claim with varying functional groups.

The BPAI emphasized that that the lack of working examples alone is not fatal to a finding of enablement, because the patent specification is written for a person of skill in the art, and such a person comes to the patent with the knowledge of what has come before. The BPAI found that the examiner had merely pointed to the absence of working examples without providing argument or evidence to rebut the applicants evidence, and this was insufficient to sustain an enablement rejection.

With respect to the term functional group, the examiner noted the specifications definition as groups which are inert under the process conditions to which the compound containing the group is subjected and which do not substantially interfere with any process that the compound in which they are present may take part in. The examiner asserted that this functional definition was not sufficient to permit identification of functional groups of any particular structure, much less provide guidance as to how to synthesize compounds including combinations of functional groups.

The BPAI noted the specifications disclosure of the process conditions to which the compound containing the [functional] group is subjected, and stated that the examiner had failed to provide evidence or reasoning for why a skilled artisan would not have been able to determine whether a functional group falls within the scope of the claim without undue experimentation.

The examiner further asserted that the term substituted in substituted hydrocarbyl rendered the claim indefinite because of the absence of the specific moieties intended to effectuate modification by substitution or attachment to the chemical core. The specification defined a substituted hydrocarbyl as having one or more substituent groups which are inert under the process conditions to which the compound containing these groups is subjected. The substituent groups also do not substantially interfere with the process. The BPAI again found that the examiner had failed to demonstrate why a skilled artisan would not have been able to identify substituents falling with the scope of the claim based on the functional definition.

Takeaway: This case was decided based on the BPAIs view that the examiner failed to carry his burden. If an examiner rejects a compound claim as not enabled or indefinite based on the breadth of a feature of a compound claim, the examiner should be pressed to provide evidence and/or an affirmative rationale for why the feature would have been beyond the grasp of a skilled artisan. Use of terms like substituted can be desirable as they provide flexibility and breadth. While it may be undesirable to explicitly identify every substituent intended to be encompassed by a term such as substituted, a functional definition and identification of some exemplary groups may be helpful in avoiding rejections/challenges based on scope.

Making Sense Of The Movement Toward Digital Immortality – Worldcrunch

MADRID The Three Ages of Man and Death, by the 16th century German painter Hans Baldung, is a portrait of the ravages of aging. In it, a female skeleton holds an hourglass to indicate our inexorable fate, while above, to the right of the figures, a cross points toward the heavens as our only possible hope after death.

The painting, housed in Madrid's Prado museum, is a good reminder that religion was where we long turned for consolation concerning fatality. But today, technology may be usurping that space. And by 2030, it may perpetuate our lives artificially.

This is what the artificial intelligence (AI) pioneer and futurist Ray Kurzweil terms "singularity," a concept that is depicted in science fiction as either simulation of human conduct or replication of people who have died.

The computerization of all our digital data would effectively come to constitute a decoupling of what we are our identity from biological chains. In this digital transcendence, our consciousness would outlive our body or rather 'inhabit' or survive in a machine.

An embryonic version of all this is the Eternime project, a startup founded by MIT fellow Marius Ursache that saves people's stories, thoughts and memories forever, and allows them to create avatars that can interact with others, or even themselves, through their digital fingerprints.

An episode of the science fiction series Black Mirror, entitled Be Right Back, depicted immortality in those terms. Depending on the data available on a person, the algorithm can create and relive predictable behaviors. Patterns identified through data analyses would allow construction of intelligence systems superior to the Turing Test. People might even be replicated.

In some ways this form of transcendence is the same one poet and philosopher Miguel de Unamuno attributed to writing. The writer leaves his or her imprint for posterity, and his readers will encounter a part of the departed writer. "In my absence, this will be a memento of what I was," he wrote. Or it can be a painting, like Salvador Dal's The Knight of Death.

The novelty with digital perpetuation is that our bequest will not be static, like a picture, photograph or lines written in a memoir. It will be our conscience, reconverted into AI, able to interact and learn over time and adapt to new situations, through what is termed machine learning and deep learning.

All technology purports to be the solution to a problem, and death is certainly a problem. But it's also one of our fundamental taboos, the unmentionable. It constitutes a break with our idyllic view of life, especially in a time when happiness seems to have become a moral (and commercial) obligation. Death, therefore, must be removed from this model life plan.

The cultural historian Philippe Aris duly warned that from a familiar conception of death, we have moved toward an inability to accept the fact that we are finite. We have moved from death as an inevitable and quotidian part of our lives, and an experience to be lived like any other, to death as a curse. It must be systematically hidden from our view because it reminds us in spite of our efforts, that we are limited beings.

We fear death to the point of leaving the dying in solitude, as the sociologist Norbert Elias pointed out in his last years of his life. The dreams of transhumanist perfection and prolonged existence after our biological death thus clash with the notion of a limit. It is the limit that defines us and distinguishes us from others.

But would life without limits make sense? Is conscience stretched through computation not a simulation rather than an authentic prolongation of our being? Again, fiction helps us understand it.

All technology purports to be the solution to a problem, and death is certainly a problem.

The Argentine author Jorge Luis Borges observed in his short story The Immortal that in winning eternal life, the race of tired immortals comes to see the infinite value of all that is limited, and the irredeemable nature of a single life. Humans, he wrote, merit pity for their "ghostly" condition and their inevitable disappearance, "like the face of every dream."

Mario de Andrade, the Brazilian writer, offered his own take on the mortality question. "We have two lives," he wrote in his poem My Soul is in a Hurry. "And the second one begins when you realize you have but one..."

What if that life were eternal? For Borges, Baldung, Unamuno, Dal and Andrade thanks to their immortal writings and paintings it already is.

Saint of the Day: Sts Cornelius and Cyprian – Wednesday, September 16 – Aleteia EN

Martyrs (d. Third Century)

Their story

+ Cornelius was elected bishop of Rome in 251. As pope, he fought against various heresies and, with the help of the bishop Cyprian, he also worked to enforce the papal authority.

+ Driven into exile by the Emperor Gallus, Cornelius died in 253. His body was later returned to Rome and buried in the Cemetery of St. Callistus.

+ Cyprian was born to pagan parents in Carthage (North Africa) around the year 210.

+ After his conversion to Christianity, Cyprian was ordained and became bishop of Carthage in 249. Through his writings and pastoral care, Cyprian guided his flock through difficult times.

+ Cyprian was martyred during the persecution of the emperor Valerius, in the year 258.

+ These two martyrs have been honored with a common feast for several centuries and their names are included in the Roman Canon (the First Eucharistic Prayer).

+ Pope Saint Cornelius is invoked as a patron of those suffering from earaches, fevers, and those with epilepsy. Saint Cyprian is honored as the patron of Algeria and all of North Africa.

Spiritual bonus

On this day we also honor the memory of Saint Ninian. The son of a Briton chieftain, he was born in Cumbria (Britain) and later studied in Rome under Pope Saint Damasus I. After being consecrated a bishop, he returned home and began a lifetime of missionary work in Scotland. Saint Ninian died around the year 432. He remains one of the great saints of the Scottish church and he is honored as the Apostle of Northern Britain.

DCeased Makes the Justice League’s Most Powerful Foe More Dangerous Than Ever – CBR – Comic Book Resources

One of the Justice League's most dangerous supervillains, Amazo, is back in DCeased: Dead Planet #3. Amazo has plagued the Justice League since the 1960s and proves to be as formidable a foe as ever. In this issue,the surviving members of the Shadowpactenter the Southern Bunker they believe houses more survivors. What they find in the Southern Bunkeris just as terrible as the horrors that lie outside.

After Zatanna kills the infected Plastic Man, who was guarding the Southern Bunker, the remaining survivors enter the fortress and are greetedby Maxwell Lord, the Penguin, and Jason Blood. It's revealed that the Southern Bunker was built by billionaires long ago as a place of refuge after the fall ofcivilization. Jason Blood pulls Constantine aside and takes the form of Etrigan and tellsthe Hellblazer that the souls of the infected and dead are "locked inside the anti-living," and that Hell isn't pleased that it's not getting its fair share of souls. Etrigan tells Constantine that Trigon is planning towipe out everything on earth, both the infected and the living, and plans to start all over again.

To try and save what is left of this world, the billionaire super villains have been creating an army of Amazo androids. Amazo is a Gardner Fox and Mike Sekowsky creation and first appeared in The Bold and the Brave #30. After it's debut in 1960, Amazo has gone on to become one of the most fearsome and powerfulJustice Leaguevillains.

Amazo was created by the mad scientist Professor Ivo who was obsessed with immortality. Ivo programmed Amazo to focus on the Justice League in the hopes that their defeat would prove his genius and grant him immortality. Amazo is built using Ivo's Absorption Cell technology, which makes the android able to absorb all the natural skills and super abilities of any hero. When Amazo gets close enough, he can absorb, for example, the superpowers of Superman and the speed of the Flash. Even worse, the android can physically replicate the weapons and equipment of heroes as well. Amazo can simulate Green Lantern's power ring, Harley Quinn's huge hammer, and Wonder Woman's Lasso of Truth.

Though originally created as a mindless android, Amazo achieved self-awareness over time due to its ability to adapt to any situation. Now able to think on its own, Amazo is constantly upgrading itself, becoming more and more intelligent and powerful. The limits to Amazo's power haven't been reached and it has evolved into being able to use multiple powers at the same time. Amazo has confronted and beaten the Justice League on several occasions.

All these powers are what one Amazo android can do. In DCeased: Dead Planet #3, Ivo has created an army of Amazo droids. One Amazo has proven capable of handily defeating the Justice League. An army of Amazos could easilyconquer the world, which is what it seems Jason Blood, is hoping for. If they are able to save the planet, then Trigon will not interfere, and the villains will then be in control of everything. This is a win-win situation for the super villains and just made the heroes' jobs that much more difficult.

In the Garden: Peony is the perfect plant for lazy gardeners – Mansfield News Journal

It would be helpful if plant breeders and growers would rate plants according to their maintenance level, such as low-medium-high. Any veteran gardener can quickly classify a plant according to a maintenance rating.

For example, my rating for the tall bearded iris is high, the peony low. But I must add the peony is an exception; not too many plants have a low rating.

The indoor plant like the African violet would be high maintenance. My mother grew them, and she spent hours caring for her plant collection.

The garden rose is another high maintenance plant. Gardeners spend many hours growing these special plants.

The peony is an unusual plant in that it has a short bloom period of only one week. I'm amazed some breeder hasn't come up with a peony that blooms for at least a month.

As I used to tell my biology classes, "The world is wide open for new ideas in the plant world." And this is certainly true in horticulture.

If you want a low maintenance plant for the landscape, the peony should be at the top of the list little or no maintenance. Deadhead the flowers and fall cleanup is all. It's a perfect plant for the lazy gardener.

Then we come to the tall bearded iris; a very high maintenance plant in the garden.

The tall iris stem with large colored flower on top puts on a strong color display. But the thick roots grow fast and require frequent attention to prevent crowding. Generally, this plant is a fast grower, which means extra labor. Most of this work is best done on your hands and knees, which is no easy task. There are few iris growers working beyond age 80-85.

My active iris growing was from age 45 to 60. The later years included growing reblooming iris. These plants had two bloom periods during the year spring in late May and a second bloom period in September into October.

I remember one year there was a very late iris bloom and also late watermelon ripe in the garden at the same time. Timing was not right for both of these plants, but it did happen.

Reblooming iris are gaining in popularity. I visited a grower and breeder of them named Earl Hall in 1995. He grew hundreds of them at his home at West Alexandria, Ohio (near Dayton). It was the only time I saw gravel used as mulch in his fields of iris plants. Normally you do not mulch iris, but he said the gravel had great drainage and helped control weeds.

One of Earl's colorful pink rebloomers he named Pink Attraction, and it had a beautiful pink color.

‘The Water Man’: Toronto Review | Reviews | Screen – Screen International

The directorial debut from David Oyelowo is a rewarding, (older) family-friendly adventure which packs some crisply executed moments of nail-biting peril into a moving story which deals with grief, loss and newly forged friendships.

Oyelowos intention is to enable young black children to see themselves represented in the kind of rich adventure fantasy picture which has its roots in 1980s Hollywood

Gunner (a lovely, soulful performance from Lonnie Chavis) and his family have newly moved to the town of Pine Mills. But Gunner has to adjust not only to being the new kid in town, but to building a relationship with the largely absent father Amos (David Oyelowo) who has resigned his naval commission to care for Gunners gravely ill mother Mary (Rosario Dawson). An avid reader, Gunner (12 years-old, at a guess) stumbles on a book which suggests that the local legend of The Water Man might hold the clue to saving his mother. His quest to find the mythical figure that haunts the forests unites him with Jo (Amiah Miller), a girl who weaves fantastic stories to cushion herself from a sadder truth.

Oyelowos intention with the film was to enable young black children to see themselves represented in the kind of rich adventure fantasy picture which has its roots in 1980s Hollywood. Spielberg is a clear influence, as is Stand By Me, but theres also a thematic parallel with the more recent A Monster Calls. The pictures scariness will take it out of the domain of younger kids, but older children and teenagers should relish the skittering menace of threats both real and imagined. Its a film which would benefit from the collective experience of a theatrical release but could certainly hold its own on a VOD platform.

Closer to his creative mother than his authoritarian father, Gunner is a sensitive, artistic soul who draws a supernatural graphic novel in his spare time. His sketches are brought to life sporadically in little animated segments. But a more striking visual aspect is the films vivid drenching of colour. Vibrant amber hues flood into every frame from the hoodie that hangs on Gunners lean frame, to the graffiti on the walls to the light which glances off his cheekbones at night.

The choice of yellow ties into the mythology at the heart of the film. Alfred Molina, slightly underused as a cantankerous local eccentric, reveals a key back story about the mysterious Water Man, the tall, shadowy figure spotted by generations of locals emerging from a lake, with fire on his chest and hungry hope in his eyes.

Water Man was a past resident of the town who found a seam of glowing yellow rock while working in the mine. Shortly afterwards, a nearby dam burst, drowning all its inhabitants. All, except the man in possession of the rock, a mineral which has no value to the living but is invaluable to the dead. He came back to life and spent his immortality seething and searching for the remains of his dead wife so that she, too, could be reanimated.

Blue-haired outlaw kid Jo claims to have seen the Water Man, displaying a fresh scar on her neck as proof. Dishonesty is not in Gunners register; it doesnt occur to him to question her claims. So, equipped with his fathers samurai sword and all his savings, he sets off with Jo to learn the secrets that lurk in the woods. As locals repeatedly warn him, the forest is a pretty spooky place, and Oyelowo flirts with horror devices as indistinct shapes brush past the periphery of Gunners head torch. But in addition to the shadowy threats, theres a more immediate danger: a forest fire threatens to cut the children off from safety. The supernatural mystery morphs into a nail-biting escape.

While Gunner might not find what he had hoped for the film still finds a satisfying, if sadness-tinged conclusion which doesnt talk down to its young audience.
