Biotech and beyond – The Hindu

When I was looking for universities to apply for an undergraduate programme, I heard about Rabindranath Tagore University (RNTU) and decided to visit the campus. I was astonished to see all the facilities offered here. Since the educational institutions in and around Vidisha dont offer similar facilities, I moved to Bhopal to join RNTU for a programme in Biotechnology.

This subject is used in different fields, including agriculture, environment and medicine and is slowly gaining popularity in India, especially in relation to agriculture, organic crops as well as cross breeding.

Infrastructure

At RNTU, we have access to excellent labs and equipment required for research, such as an in-house DNA fingerprinting lab and this makes the educational experience really engrossing.

Also, the teachers are supportive and helpful in creating an interactive learning experience. Presentations and audiovisual lessons and use of technology make the classes compelling.

The exposure to practical learning, as well as extracurricular activities, has improved my management and leadership skills. It has enabled me come out of my shell and explore the world as well as my own capabilities. One of my best experiences was representing my university at a national level debate competition organised by the Amity University, Lucknow.

In addition to participating in competitions, I was also a part of the volunteering committee at Vishwa Rang, the Tagore International Literature and Arts Festival during which I met and interacted with many artists and writers.

I was also a member of the organising team for the annual college festival Rhythm. We decided each act, divided the responsibilities and mapped of various activities with deadlines proper execution.

Even during the lockdown, we are constantly getting various internship opportunities so that our future is not adversely affected by the pandemic.

Kanika Soni is a third-year undergraduate student of Biotechnology from the Rabindranath Tagore University, Bhopal

Surface functionalization: A tool for biotechnology and health sectors – Open Access Government

Case study 1: Nanoparticles as Oxygen Scavengers for food-packaging

Partners: University of Minho and International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory

Funding: Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) in the framework of the project NANOXYPACK co-financed via FEDER (PT2020) POCI-01-0145-FEDER-030789.

The development of oxygen-sensitive and detecting materials is one of the main aims in the packaging industry, as even a 2% residual oxygen concentration may alter food organoleptic properties. The presence of oxygen in the packaging, as well as the permeation of oxygen during storage, is then avoided by using oxygen scavenging materials and controlled by using packaging materials with low permeability to gases.

This project addresses the development of a new generation of active and intelligent packaging film for foods through the dispersion of nano-sized multifunctional particles (Figure 1) incorporated by magnetron sputtering onto a bio-polymeric matrix. The enhanced oxygen absorption capacity, antimicrobial properties and changes in colour as a function of oxygen absorption provide the packagingmaterial with the multifunctional characteristics required to enlarge the shelf-life of the food.

Partners: University of Minho and University of Porto and DENTAL VERDE CLNICA MDICA E DENTRIA, LDA

Funding: Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) in the framework of the HEALTHYDENT (co-financed via FEDER (PT2020) POCI-01-0145-FEDER-030708

The HEALTHYDENT project develops a new concept of dental implants. A novel surface with graded functional treatments will give a solution for the main problems of dental implants used nowadays: Poor bioactivity that delays osseintegration, and periimplantitis, an inflammatory disease due to bacterial infection.

The strategy to achieve this novel design was accomplished in two main steps. As first step, tantalum surface functionalization was carried out by micro-arc oxidation (also called plasma electrolytic oxidation, an electrochemical process derived from anodization) to create a porous tantalum oxide (Ta2O5) surface enriched with calcium and phosphorous in order to mimic the morphology and chemical composition of the bone tissue (Figure 2-A). Secondly, this enriched porous Ta2O5 surface was doped with zinc (Zn) nanoparticles (Figure 2-B), by DC magneton sputtering technique providing the antibacterial ability. As it is crucial to guarantee the balance between the non-toxicity of the Zn nanoparticles and the bacterial inhibition, an additional carbon layer was deposited after Zn nanoparticles deposition (Figure 2- C, D and E).

The biological response of the modified surface was evaluated, and it was observed that the surface functionalization did not show toxicity, as shown by the MTT assay for the sample with Zn nanoparticles and the sample with Zn nanoparticles and the carbon layer (Figure 3-A and B, respectively) and by the cells adhesion and proliferation in both surfaces (Figure 3- C and D, respectively). It is important highlight that the sample with the Zn nanoparticles revealed a more efficient ability to inhibit the bacteria adhesion than the surface functionalization with the Zn nanoparticles and the carbon layer, Figure 3-E and F, respectively.

Partners: University of Minho, University of Coimbra and ICC-Indstrias e Comrcio de Calado S.A

Funding: Science DiabetICC Footwear POCI-01-0247-FEDER-039784

Science DiabetICC Footwear project proposes the development of a new typology of footwear oriented to the segments of therapeutic footwear targeting the clinical condition of Diabetic Foot (DF). The solution consists of components of the footwear and a removable insole, adding the ability to reduce the risk of ulcer-associated infections. In this context, at the insoles level, antimicrobial coatings deposited by magnetron sputtering were developed, aiming to prevent the occurrence of infections resulting from DF.

In vitro antimicrobial activity was assessed using a yeast Candida parapsilosis and a bacterium Staphylococcus epidermidis commonly found on the skin. Different coatings were tested, and the AgO-0.25 coating was the one that showed the best results, it has a greater halo around the sample (transparent zone indicating the absence of microorganisms) as can be seen in figure 4 and through the SEM images obtained after the test, the original leather contains microorganisms, contrary to the one coated with AgO.

Debut Biotechnology Awarded $1M from Air Force Research Lab to Leverage Cell-Free Continuous Biomanufacturing in Aerospace Applications – PR Web

Debut Bio

SAN DIEGO (PRWEB) September 15, 2020

Debut Biotechnology, a UC-Irvine spinout advancing scalable cell-free biomanufacturing, today announced that it has been awarded $1M from the Air Force Research Labs Biotechnology Grand Challenge. Debut Bio is the inaugural recipient of the award, which honors the companys proposal on biosynthesis of monomers for aerospace applications.

In the proposal, Debut Bio details its ability to leverage the companys scalable biomanufacturing platform for bio- and metal-free synthesis of polymer precursors relevant for the aerospace industry. Debut Bios platform will provide AFRL with the ability to effectively and efficiently biomanufacture specialty ingredients needed for aerospace applications. In doing so, Debut Bio expects to reduce aerospace material costs and improve vehicle maintenance processes by extending service lifetimes.

The Air Force Research Lab has a well-documented history in discovering and leveraging breakthrough technologies. By offering a cell-free, continuous biomanufacturing process, we are excited to continue that legacy of innovation through our work with them, said Dr. Joshua Britton, CEO and Founder of Debut Biotechnology. Cell-free biomanufacturing enables the quality manufacturing of high-value molecules at a price point that scales far beyond what is possible today. In bringing this approach to the AFRL, we hope to usher in a new era of biomanufacturing for high-value molecules that is scalable, economically viable, and results in solutions that are efficient and effective.

Debut Bio has applied its technology to the pharmaceutical and specialty ingredient industries, allowing customers to manufacture high-value molecules by combining custom-designed immobilized enzymes with continuous biomanufacturing processes. Through the utilization of plug-and-play enzyme cartridges, the companys cell-free platform has the ability to transform low-value bio-renewable materials into high-value specialty chemicals.

The Debut Biotechnology proposal provides a path to a scalable, bio- and metal free synthesis of key aerospace polymer precursors, explained Dr. Davide Simone, AFRLs technology advisor for biosynthesis of monomers for aerospace thermosets and senior research chemist. Expected benefits for the Air Force include a significant savings in composite aerospace structural material costs and the elimination of oxidation promoting metal catalysts from structural components, extending service lifetimes.

Debut Bios enzyme cartridges are sequentially arranged in a manner which mimics pathways found in plants and other organisms. Each cartridge is finely-tuned to provide the ideal temperature, pH, concentration, solvent, and reaction time for each individual step to maximize enzymatic productivity and product titer levels. The platform requires far fewer steps than traditional materials manufacturing and avoids the use of environmentally harmful chemical synthesis. Importantly, it overcomes many challenges typically associated with relying on cells for biomanufacturing or extraction of ingredients from plants and other sources.

In Debut Bios system, materials are passed from one enzyme reactor to another to build in-vitro or cell-free biosynthetic pathways. The companys platform uses a sustainable approach by leveraging advanced enzymes outside of the cell to maximize performance and avoid issues with cell-based fermentation systems. The platform technology operates under a continuous manufacturing regime, allowing Debut Bio to scale beyond the capabilities of other manufacturing processes currently on the market, which are constrained by the precipitation of enzymes, the need for multiple large reactors, and the specific requirements of enzymes. By leveraging continuous manufacturing, Debut Bio is able to drive down the cost of cell-free manufacturing to provide scale, consistency, novelty, and ultimately the ability to produce a biomolecule with the click of a button.

Debut Bio serves organizations across the defense and specialty ingredient industries, with commitments from several large scale manufacturers to integrate its platform into their existing pipelines.

The Immigrants Who Created New Possibilities – The Atlantic

Barack Obamas father has a story like Donald Harriss. In 1959, with Kenya on the verge of independence, the nationalist leader Tom Mboya hatched a scheme to send talented young Kenyans to Western universities so they could return and help run the fledgling country. The British colonial authorities dismissed the idea because a British-affiliated university was next door in Uganda. So Mboya went to the U.S., where he raised funds from Harry Belafonte, Sidney Poitier, and Jackie Robinson, and, later, from presidential candidate John F. Kennedy, who thought the plan might make Kenyas emerging elite pro-American. One of the students who won Mboyas scholarship was Barack Obama Sr., who met Ann Dunham, the future presidents mother, in a Russian class at the University of Hawaii in 1960.

Read: The real story of Obamas mom

Gopalan, Harris, and Obama Sr. were ahead of their time. In the early 1960s, the U.S. permitted few immigrants from Africa and Asia. But that changed with the 1965 Immigration and Nationality Act, which opened Americas doors to newcomers who werent from northern Europe. From 1965 to 1970, the number of immigrants from Asia quadrupled. Immigration from the Caribbean was almost four times higher in the 1960s than it had been in the 1950s. And the number of international students in the U.S.many of whom stayed in the country after receiving their degreesbegan a steady climb from fewer than 100,000 in the late 1950s to 400,000 by the late 1980s to more than 1 million by the time Trump took office. In 2016, nine of the 10 countries that sent the most students to the U.S. were in Asia, Africa, or the Middle East.

Supporters of these trends often defend them in economic terms. Immigrants, they note, are responsible for many of the patents created by Americas top research universities. Foreign students tuition subsidizes public universities during an era in which state-government support has dwindled. And many foreign students go on to create companies that employ Americans.

But theres an asymmetry between establishment pro-immigration voices, who generally stress materialist arguments, and the conservative nationalists, ascendant under Trump, who define immigration primarily as a political, cultural, and racial threat. In her book, Adios America, which helped shape Trumps immigration message in 2016, Ann Coulter depicts the 1965 immigration law as part of a progressive strategy to flood the United States with nonwhite immigrants so that conservatives cant win elections. Democrats had not been able to get a majority of white people to vote for them, she writes. Their only hope was to bring in new voters.

This line of argument reduces immigration to an electoral ploy, and Democrats often respond by stressing the utilitarian benefits of welcoming people from all over. But the very existence of Kamala Harris and Barack Obama reveals a political effect that cant be captured by statistical generalizations. Immigration into the United States allows multicultural interactions that produce Americans who can see the country from both within and without.

About UNITE

ITIs investigational UNITE platform, or UNiversal Intracellular Targeted Expression, is thought to work by encoding the Lysosomal Associated Membrane Protein, an endogenous protein in humans. In this way, ITIs vaccines (DNA or RNA) have the potential to utilize the bodys natural biochemistry to develop a broad immune response including antibody production, cytokine release and critical immunological memory. This approach could put UNITE technology at the crossroads of immunotherapies in a number of illnesses, including cancer, allergy and infectious diseases. UNITE is currently being employed in Phase II clinical trials as a cancer immunotherapy. ITI is also collaborating with academic centers and biotechnology companies to study the use of UNITE in cancer types of high mortality, including cases where there are limited treatment options like glioblastoma and acute myeloid leukemia. ITI believes that these early clinical studies may provide a proof of concept for UNITE therapy in cancer, and if successful, set the stage for future studies, including combinations in these tumor types and others. Preclinical data is currently being developed to explore whether LAMP nucleic acid constructs may amplify and activate the immune response in highly immunogenic tumor types and be used to create immune responses to tumor types that otherwise do not provoke an immune response.

About ITI-1000 and the Phase 2 (ATTAC-II) Study

ITI-1000 is an investigational dendritic cell vaccine therapy currently in a Phase 2 clinical trial (ATTAC-II) for the treatment of GBM. ITI-1000 was developed using Immunomics proprietary investigational lysosomal targeting technology, UNITE, in the context of cell therapy. In May 2017, Immunomic exclusively licensed a patent portfolio from Annias Immunotherapeutics for use in combination with UNITE and ITI-1000, allowing Immunomic to combine UNITE with a patented and proprietary CMV immunotherapy platform. The ATTAC-II study (NCT02465268) is a Phase II randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial enrolling patients with newly diagnosed GBM that will explore whether dendritic cell (DC) vaccines, including ITI-1000, targeting the CMV antigen pp65 improves survival. This study is enrolling up to 120 subjects at 3 clinical sites in the United States. For more information on the ATTAC-II study, please visit http://www.clinicaltrials.gov.

Department of Energy Awards $1M to CU Denver-Led Team for Computational Biology – CU Denver News

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced $5 million in funding for six new research projects in computational biology, $1,049,639 of which goes to Chris Miller, associate professor in CU Denvers Department of Integrative Biology, and his collaboratorsFarnoush Banaei-Kashani from CU Denver, Kelly Wrighton from CSU, and Chris Henry from DOE.

Millers project, titled Finding the Missing Pieces: Filling Gaps that Impede the Translation of Omics Data into Models, seeks to develop novel computational biology approaches and software to better understand microbial genomes relevant to the environment. According to Miller, there are parallels to studying the human microbiome in many challenges we see todayclimate change, bioenergy-relevant systems, and more.

Take, for example, a freshwater wetland system in Ohio. Miller and his colleagues studied this model for years because microbes in the soil of freshwater wetlands naturally emit the greenhouse gas methane. All that said, we know relatively little about the controls on this microbial process or how changing climate or land-use practices might affect emissions.

There are thousands of different types of microbes (bacteria, fungi, etc.) living in even just a pinch of this soil, Miller said. But we have no clue how to grow and study most of them in the lab, so DNA sequencing and computation give us the ability to extract DNA directly from soil, sequence the bits of genome we recover, and then computationally try to piece the original genomes back together.

The reason this matters? Miller notes by following this process, we are able to actually predict which proteins those genomes encode and infer what the microbes might be doing in the environment.

In some of these complex soils, we are discovering novel organismslots of themand the genes we are sequencing often look nothing like scientists have characterized in the lab before, Miller said. New computational approaches are needed to infer microbial biochemistry and metabolism from the DNA so we can better understand and predict microbial roles in the larger ecosystems.

By developing new algorithms and software for analyzing microbial genomes recovered from the environment, Miller and his team will develop and scale new computational methods to infer functions for genes. This will be integrated into a DOE computational biology system called KBase so scientists all over the world can utilize their methods to more efficiently figure out what proteins and genomes are doing in their systems of interest.

This project is exciting because it is foundational to answering so many different kinds of questions, said Miller. Biology is increasingly Big Data science, and we need to make sure we have the computational tools to keep up with the data generation Our collaborators on this project are world-class, and I feel grateful that CU Denver students and I will have the chance to work with and learn from this team to advance the science.

Intestinal Organoid Built That Looks and Functions Like Real Tissue – Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology News

Organoids, which originate from stem cells, are a tool with great potential for modeling tissue and disease biology. The idea is to build miniature tissues and organs that accurately resemble and behave like their real counterparts. But there have been limitations to their development. A new study has taken organoids a step further by inducing intestinal stem cells to form tube-shaped epithelia with an accessible lumen and a similar spatial arrangement of crypt- and villus-like domains to that in vivo. These mini-intestines also retain key physiological hallmarks of the intestine and have a notable capacity to regenerate.

The work is published in Nature in the paper titled, Homeostatic mini-intestines through scaffold-guided organoid morphogenesis.

Organoids could complement animal testing by providing healthy or diseased human tissues, expediting the lengthy journey from lab to clinical trial. Beyond that, organoid technology may hold promise, in the long-term, to replace damaged tissues or even organs in the future. For example, by taking stem cells from a patient and growing them into a new liver, heart, kidney, or lung.

So far, established methods of making organoids come with considerable drawbacks: stem cells develop uncontrollably into circular and closed tissues that have a short lifespan, as well as non-physiological size and shape, all of which result in overall anatomical and/or physiological inconsistency with real-life organs.

Now, scientists from the group led by Matthias Ltolf, PhD, professor at EPFLs Institute of Bioengineering, have found a way to guide stem cells to form an intestinal organoid that looks and functions just like real tissue. The method exploits the ability of stem cells to grow and organize themselves along a tube-shaped scaffold that mimics the surface of the native tissue, placed inside a microfluidic chip.

The researchers used a laser to sculpt the gut-shaped scaffold within a hydrogel, a soft mix of crosslinked proteins found in the guts extracellular matrix supporting the cells in the native tissue. Aside from being the substrate on which the stem cells could grow, the hydrogel thus also provides the form or geometry that would build the final intestinal tissue.

Once seeded in the gut-like scaffold, within hours, the stem cells spread across the scaffold, forming a continuous layer of cells with its characteristic crypt structures and villus-like domains. Then came a surprising result: the scientists found that the stem cells arranged themselves in order to form a functional tiny gut.

It looks like the geometry of the hydrogel scaffold, with its crypt-shaped cavities, directly influences the behavior of the stem cells so that they are maintained in the cavities and differentiate in the areas outside, just like in the native tissue, said Ltolf. The stem cells didnt just adapt to the shape of the scaffold, they produced all the key differentiated cell types found in the real gut, with some rare and specialized cell types normally not found in organoids.

Intestinal tissues are known for the highest cell turnover rates in the body, resulting in a massive amount of shed dead cells accumulating in the lumen of the classical organoids that grow as closed spheres and require weekly breaking down into small fragments to maintain them in culture. The introduction of a microfluidic system allowed us to efficiently perfuse these mini-guts and establish a long-lived homeostatic organoid system in which cell birth and death are balanced, said Mike Nikolaev, a graduate student and the first author of the paper.

The researchers demonstrated that these miniature intestines share many functional features with their in vivo counterparts. For example, they can regenerate after massive tissue damage and they can be used to model inflammatory processes or host-microbe interactions in a way not previously possible with any other tissue model grown in the laboratory.

In addition, this approach is broadly applicable for the growth of miniature tissues from stem cells derived from other organs such as the lung, liver, or pancreas, and from biopsies of human patients. Our work, explained Ltolf, shows that tissue engineering can be used to control organoid development and build next-gen organoids with high physiological relevance, opening up exciting perspectives for disease modeling, drug discovery, diagnostics, and regenerative medicine.

Wealth: Who are the Richest Germans? – The Berlin Spectator

Germany has as many as 237 billionaires on the basis of the European currency Euro. An old acquaintance is still at the top of the list.

Germanys billionaires made their fortunes by selling hygiene paper, toys, beverages, industry cables, chicken, other food, packaging, campers, software, household appliances, real estate objects and sweets. Since Germany is the land of cars, it is no surprise that the owners of quite a few car parts suppliers made it on the list of the 1,000 richest Germans published by the Welt am Sonntag weekly.

Schwarz is Undisputed Winner

The very richest German national is Dieter Schwarz. It is not the first time he made it to the top of the list, with a fortune of 41.8 billion Euro (49.5 billion U.S. Dollars or 38.3 billion Pounds Sterling). His company, Schwarz-Gruppe, with an annual turnover of 113.3 billion Euro (134.1 billion Dollars or 103.8 billion Pounds), runs ths supermarket chain Lidl and Kaufland, a big box store chains.

About half Schwarz wealth is what the second-richest Germans, the Reimann family is worth. According to the ranking compiled by Welt am Sonntag, the owners of the businesses Coty and Jacobs Douwe Egberts are sitting on 21.45 billion Euro (25.4 billion Dollars or 19.7 billion Pounds).

Porsche and BMW Shareholders

Dieter Schwarz and the Reimann family were able to increase their wealth to some extent since 2019, in spite of or maybe because of the Corona pandemic. Third on the list is Wolfgang Porsche, one of the shareholders at Volkswagen and Porsche, with a fortune of 20 billion Euro flat (23.7 billion Dollars or 18.3 billion Pounds). In Porsches case, nothing much changed since last year.

Susanne Klatten remains Germanys richest woman, with a net worth of 15.1 billion Euro (17.9 billion Dollars or 13.4 billion Pounds). She is a shareholder at both BMW and Altana, a chemicals company. Her brother Stefan Quandt only hit the 9th place on the Welt am Sonntag list. He owns 13.6 billion Euro (16.1 billion Dollars or 12.5 billion Pounds).

Places Five to Ten

Dietmar Hopp, who is on the fifth place, made his fortune with software and bioengineering. Hasso Plattner, on the sixth place, is Hopps partner at the software company SAP. He also deals with art. The seventh and eighth places are being occupied by the families Heister and Albrecht who own the supermarket chain Aldi Sd.

The tenth place goes to businessman Heinz Hermann Thiele who manufactures brakes. At the same time, he is a shareholder of several companies, including Lufthansa. The people mentioned above are only ten out of a total of 237 billionaires in Germany.

Pale in Comparison

While there obviously is a lot of wealth in the Federal Republic of Germany, those on the list still look rather pale next to the richest Americans. Jeff Bezos fortune is about three times larger than Dieter Schwarz. Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Warren Buffet, Larry Ellison, Steve Ballmer, Elon Musk, Sergey Brin, Alice Walton and several other U.S. citizens are a lot richer than Germanys number one.

Research Roundup: Researchers test experimental COVID-19 antibodies treatment on patients – The Stanford Daily

Each week, The Dailys Science & Tech section produces a roundup of the most exciting and influential research happening on campus or otherwise related to Stanford. Heres our digest for the weeks of Aug 30 Sept 12.

Coronavirus antibodies treatment in phase II experimental trials

Stanford Medicine researchers are participating in a phase II multi-site clinical trial to test an antibody-drug designed to diminish early COVID-19 symptoms in patients with mild to moderate cases. Preliminary results are expected later this month.

The goal is to see if we can get sick people better faster, reducing both the length of their illness and how long they are shedding the virus, and therefore help prevent others from getting sick, Department of Emergency Medicine Chair Andra Blomkalns told Stanford Medicine News. I think this treatment shows great promise.

At Stanford Hospitals, the clinical site aims to enroll 20 to 40 patients who have tested positive for COVID-19. The experimental treatment involves using antibodies from patients who have recovered from COVID-19, then injecting these antibodies into COVID-19 positive patients.

Our hope is to effect treatment early in the course of disease, before it has time to progress further and potentially damage organs, Blomkalns said.

Microorganism yeast cells reprogrammed to produce plant-based drugs

Yeast cellular machinery can be genetically reprogrammed to change these microscopic organisms into factories that convert sugar and amino acids into plant-based drugs, a study published on Sept. 2 in Nature reports.

The drug shortages were seeing around the COVID-19 crisis drive home why we need new and more reliable ways to source these plant-based medicines, which take months to years to grow and come from a few countries, where climate change, natural disasters and geopolitical issues can disrupt supplies, bioengineering professor Christina Smolke told Stanford News.

The findings suggest that by making genetic modifications to the organelles found in yeast cells, the team can manipulate cellular processes to manufacture the desired chemical drug. In this case, researchers wanted to produce tropane alkaloid molecules for medicinal uses.

Plants are the worlds best chemists, Smolke said. We want to recapitulate their unique and useful chemistries in domesticated microbes to build complex molecules inspired by the natural world but tailored to better meet human needs.

Mosquito-borne disease likelihood increases as climate warms

In Sub-Saharan African, malaria rates are predicted to decrease, while other mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue fever, will increase significantly due to warming climates and urbanization, a study published on Sept. 9 in Lancet Planetary Health reports.

Climate change is going to rearrange the landscape of infectious disease, biology assistant professor Erin Mordecai told Stanford News. Chikungunya and dengue outbreaks like weve recently seen in East Africa are only becoming more likely across much of the continent. We need to be ready for this emerging threat.

The Aedes aegypti mosquito can transmit a wide variety of diseases, including Rift Valley Fever, yellow fever, Zika, chikungunya and dengue. The findings suggest that Aedes aegypti breeding grounds have expanded due to urbanization and warming climate. The mosquitos enjoy living in human-made water containers, like buckets or water storage tanks, and warm temperatures.

Its vital to focus on controlling mosquitoes that spread diseases like dengue because there are no medical treatments for these diseases, pediatrics professor Desiree LaBeaud told Stanford News. On top of that, a shift from malaria to dengue may overwhelm health systems because diseases introduced to new populations often lead to large outbreaks.
