SPOKANE, Wash.Washington State University Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine today announced that it has earned accreditation to launch its first residency program and is accepting applications immediately.

The WSU Internal Medicine Residency Program-Everett, based at Providence Regional Medical Center Everett, is a three-year residency training program with a focus on primary care. Sixteen resident positions have been approved for the first year; 12 categorical and four preliminary positions will be welcomed in June 2021 with 12 more added each year over three years to cap at 40 total residency positions when fully supported.

This is an extremely proud moment for the Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine and is something weve been working toward since the day we started the college, said Dr. John Tomkowiak, founding dean of the Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine. More residency programs in Washington increases the likelihood that students will remain in our state to practice medicine, and were so excited to launch this program in time for our first graduating class of medical students to apply and potentially continue their training with WSU.

Residency, also known as graduate medical education, is the three- to seven-year phase of medical education following graduation from medical school that prepares physicians for independent practice in a medical specialty. While about 43percent of medical school graduates practice in the state where they graduate, that number increases to 70 percent when they complete both their medical education and their residency in the same state.

Floyd College of Medicine on this new program and welcome our first class of residents next summer, saidDr.Jay Cook, chief medical officeratProvidenceRegional Medical Center Everett. The mission to train medical students to serve our rural and underserved communities and increase the likelihood they will remain right here in Washington is well aligned with our goals and we look forward to making a marked impact on both through this residency program.

While residents of the WSU Internal Medicine Residency Program-Everett will primarily be based at Providence Regional Medical Center Everett, they will have rotations with several area clinics and physician groups including The Everett Clinic,Snohomish Kidney Institute,North Sound Emergency Medicine, Western Washington Medical Group, and Providence Medical Group Northwest. Residents will divide their time between general medicine and subspecialty ward services, intensive care units, ambulatory care experiences, consultation rotations, emergency rooms and long-term care settings.

This program offers a unique opportunity for residents to gain experience treating patients from a wide range of racial, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds, as well as from the surrounding rural communities, which aligns with the colleges focus on serving Washingtons rural and underserved, said Dr. Jonathan Espenschied, associate dean of graduate medical education and continuing medical education. Providence Regional Medical Center Everett has been a terrific partner throughout this process and, as the primary clinical site for the residency program, it allows for the possibility to branch out into other rural and underserved areas in the region.

Dr. Matthew Hansen, an internal medicine specialist treating patients in the Everett area for the past six years, will serve as the program director leading operations, recruitment and education for the residency program.

I am honored to be WSUs first residency program director and to use my expertise and passion for medical education to expand internal medicine training in Washington, said Hansen. Like the inaugural class at the Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine, this first class of residents will get to help mold and shape this program for years to come, leaving a legacy for every future resident in this program.

The program received accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) after a rigorous two-year development process following the colleges initial ACGME accreditation as a sponsoring institution in 2018.

End-times: How the dead will rise and when? The Manila Times – The Manila Times

Someone may say, How are the dead raised? With what kind of body will they come back? [The body] is sown corruptible; it is raised incorruptible. It is sown dishonorable; it is raised glorious. It is sown weak; it is raised powerful. It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual one. The First Letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians, 15:35, 42-44

The above Epistle passage from Fridays first Mass reading describes resurrection in Christian belief. Rather than just getting back their former bodies, the risen will have spiritual bodies, endowed with supernatural qualities as the Risen Christ showed in dazzling with divine light, appearing and disappearing anywhere, floating heavenward and, of course, living forever.

That is what believers of the Rapture expect when Jesus Christ returns in the end times. The righteous still alive during His Second Coming will not die just to be instantly resurrected. Rather, their living bodies will be transformed into the same resurrected constitutions the dead will have.

So said St. Paul later in his First Letter to the Corinthians (1 Cor 15:51-54): We shall not all sleep [die] but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet [said to be before the Rapture]. ? For this perishable nature must put on the imperishable, and this mortal nature must put on immortality.

The Apostle explains further in his First Letter to the Thessalonians (4:16-17): For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the archangels call, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead will rise first; then we who are alive, who are left, shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord.

When will Christ return?

The question for believers since our Lords Ascension, of course, is: When?When the first disciples were still alive, Christians thought the Second Coming would happen in their lifetime. Hence, as quoted above, St. Paul said, We [believers] shall not all sleep? or die before Jesus returned.

In the two millennia since those Apostolic times, the faithful in different eras thought they too would live to see Christ return in triumph, as foretold in Scripture. Such end-times or eschatological expectations tended to intensify amid periods of widespread distress and disaster like today.

Thats because the Second Coming or Parousia is supposed to happen after war, famine, pestilence and death predicted in the Book of Revelation or Apocalypse, said to be about the end-times, and Chapter 24 of the Gospel of St. Matthew, called by many the mini-Apocalypse.

Now, with worldwide pandemic, economic dislocation and civil unrest, plus intensifying geopolitical rivalry and saber-rattling between superpower America and fast-rising China, eschatological expectations are again burgeoning. So are Second Coming expectations, along with Rapture proclamations, some as early as this December.

The billion-strong Catholic Church, the largest Christian denomination, does not share such expectations, at least officially. As discussed in this column two Sundays ago, the Church expects five major prophecies to happen before the Parousia, including Israels conversion to Christianity and the seven-year Tribulation.

Plus: the rise and rule of the evil Antichrist, who will even declare himself God for all to worship (https://www.manilatimes.net/2020/09/06/opinion/columnists/topanalysis/you-are-the-watchman-warn-the-people-for-me/764797/).

While also going by similar end-times timetables, other Christian groups argue that Christ will not wait till all five events have happened before Rapturing his bride, the Christian Church.

Rapture, not ravage, the bride

Indeed, perhaps the most widespread belief among Christians pondering the end-times is Rapture before Tribulation. According to this Pretribulation view, Christ will not let his bride, the multitude of believers, be ravaged through the seven years of worldwide calamity, tyranny and death, including the demonic rule of the Antichrist, who is predicted to force all humanity to worship him on pain of death.

Why, Pretribulation advocates argue, would Christ subject his loyal followers awaiting his Second Coming to immense agonies, including threats that may prod many to apostasy from the faith and idolatry of the Antichrist?

Well, Pretrib opponents may counter, God did not spare His own Son, not to mention countless martyrs over the millennia, from St. Stephen in Jerusalem soon after the birth of the Church at Pentecost all the way to believers beheaded on YouTube by Daesh. Why would He have qualms about subjecting todays faithful to the ultimate test of faith at the murderous hands of the Antichrist?

In todays first Sunday Mass reading, the Prophet Isaiah declares: For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways, says the Lord. As high as the heavens are above the earth, so high are my ways above your ways and my thoughts above your thoughts (Isaiah 55:8-9).

Our Lord will come and take his followers when and how he wishes, whatever human thinking may surmise he would do. And we can only turn to the Lord for mercy, to our God, who is generous in forgiving, as Isaiah admonished in the first reading.

Or as Jesus taught us to pray, Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. Amen.

Deadly Genesis revealed that Xavier deployed a secret team to save the original X-Men... and it went horribly wrong. Where are they now?

Long before relocating to Krakoa, the X-Men were prisoners of the living island. With his original team trapped, Charles Xavier needed a new team to rescue them. This apparently came in the form of a new roster which saw the debut of many fan favorites such as Nightcrawler, Colossus and Storm.

However, the students would later find out that this wasn't Xavier's only attempt to liberate the X-Men from Krakoa. He had previously sent a smaller team, that has been massacred by the living island. Though they did manage to free Cyclops, Xavier had the memory erased from the field team leader's mind, to cover up the loss of the team, which consisted of Petra, Sway, Darwin and Scott's own brother, Vulcan. Now, we're taking a closer look at what happened to the forgotten generation of X-Men that debuted in Ed Brubaker and Trevor Harisine's X-Men: Deadly Genesis.

Petra is a mutant with the power of Geokinesis, that affords her control over the earth, rock, soil and similar substances. Her powers also have tectonic implications, as she is also capable of causing earthquakes. During the mission to save the X-Men during Deadly Genesis, Petra was one of the two team members who perished. She was incinerated by Krakoa, though she was able to use her final moments to protect Vulcan and Darwin by burying them beneath the ground with the help of Sway. Petra was resurrected along with many other mutants by The Five on Krakoa, and was last seen with Vulcan in the Summers House on the moon.

Harnessing temporal powers, Sway is able to manipulate time on a small scale. Her powers allow her to replay events going back a few hours, stop time for minute bursts and slow down time in a similar confined time limit. Suzanne Chan was drafted in by Xavier during Deadly Genesis and lost her life alongside Petra. By using her manipulation of time, she was able to protect teammates Vulcan and Darwin by using her abilities in tandem with Petra's. Luckily for Sway, she was able to be brought back to life thanks to the actions of The Five on Krakoa. She was last seen in the Summers House alongside former teammates Vulcan and Petra.

As the film progresses, the more it reveals about why she goes from a college student majoring in literature and poetry to an artist who paints landscapes. While her career path shifts in seconds, it provides an abundance of information that lends to the fact that very few events in the movie are real.

The film follows Jake (Jesse Plemons) and his girlfriend known as Lucy/Louisa/Lucia (Jessie Buckley) as they go to visit his family's farm where she will meet his parentsportrayed by Toni Collette and David Thewlisfor the first time. As it progresses, the more apparent it becomes that it is all a fantasy made up in Jake's head while he contemplates ending things. As they drive to the family farm, the two discuss one of William Wordsworth's most famous poems titled "Ode: Intimations of Immortality from Recollections of Early Childhood", which reflects Jake's own fears of growing old and the inability to retain memories of childhood. Her collegiate career is given to her in order to mirror his own interests in literature. She becomes a painter once the dinner begins. The landscapes she shows Jake's parents are actually paintings he had done in his youth that she discovers in the basement. This career and detail reveal that he has creative dreams he was never able to achieve.

Moments later, she becomes a student of quantum physics. Jake's childhood bedroom contains various books on the subject. Later in the film, his mother references his twentieth birthday which is actually the age he dropped out of college. This fact, alongside his ending recitation of mathematician John Nash's speech inA Beautiful Mind,suggests that he may have majored in the subject while in school. ARobert Zemeckis credit is shown on a romantic comedy about a server. Which is followed byhis mention that she worked as a waitress and they met while she was working, similar to the short film's scenario. Her studies change for the last time with gerontology. In the midst of discussing Suzie's aging and death, Jake asserts that Lucy/Louisa/Lucia studies aging. In doing so, he expresses his guilt towards not being able to help them in the ways he wish he could have in their final moments.

Clene Nanomedicine, researching the use of gold atoms to slow ALS progression, nets $42.5M Series D – Endpoints News

A biopharma that uses gold to develop treatments for neurodegenerative diseases just got a little bit richer.

Clene Nanomedicine pulled in $42.5 million in a Series D financing round Wednesday, money which will go toward advancing its lead program through a Phase III platform trial in ALS and support Phase II trials in MS, Parkinsons disease and ALS. CEO Rob Etherington said that by the end of 2021, Clene will know whether or not the candidate, called CNM-Au8, will prove effective.

It will take us to the end of all these clinical endpoints, Etherington told Endpoints News. The exciting thing for us is that one asset could potentially be indicated to improve neurological function in MS, as well as ALS, and [though] Parkinsons is the slower program, this money is going to help us launch more completely that program.

CNM-Au8 is a liquid suspension of gold nanocrystals that catalyze intracellular biological reactions. Such catalyzation can lead to improvement in nerve cell survival, function, and communication. Chemically, the clean surfaces of the nanocrystals help normalize ATP production in cells, which is lacking in serious neurological diseases like ALS, CMO Robert Glanzman said.

Were providing bioenergy support to cells, Glanzman said. Clenes Phase III study comes as it was selected to participate in the first-ever platform trial for ALS, which enrolled its first patients earlier this month. The trial compares three separate treatments for the disease, with UCBs zilucoplan and Biohavens verdiperstat joining CNM-Au8 at Harvard-backed Massachusetts General Hospital in testing 480 total patients.

Though delayed from a March start due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the platform trial aims to expedite the development of therapies for a disease that advances rapidly and that has few effective treatment options. Only riluzole, also known as Rilutek and OKed in 1995, shows any measurable effect on ALS patients, Etherington said.

Riluzole, which functionally is really the only drug that most people with ALS use, was originally approved to delay the need for tracheostomies to encourage breathing for an extra couple months, Etherington said. But it has a very modest effect generally. It is the standard of care, however, because its the only really markedly relevant drug thats been approved for ALS in this country. Theres a few others but most of them do very little.

Clene has two other programs in the pipeline, though neither have reached the clinic just yet. The first is a topical gel containing silver and zinc ions, with researchers looking at burn treatment, accelerated wound-healing and as an anti-infective. Theres also a gold-platinum therapeutic being studied for use in oncology, which is still in the initial in vitro stage.

The bottom line for Clene though is that finding a treatment option for the extremely difficult ALS indication becomes closer to reality, with a potentially huge impact on the field.

The way you and I move and can grasp things and can talk, all this fine motor movement we take for granted, Etherington said. An ALS patient loses these and this is exactly what we are studying.

Researchers from the University of Malaga (UMA) and the Andalusian Centre for Nanomedicine and Biotechnology (BIONAND) have been making progress in the identification of new therapies that can be implemented rapidly and can combat COVID-19. They have now found a potential drug to prevent or mitigate the consequences of an infection caused by SARS-CoV-2, the novel coronavirus that has caused a global pandemic. The first results of the study have been published in Cytokine and Growth Factors Review journal and have been accessed by Financial Express Online.

The research is being led by principal researchers Fabiana Csukasi and Ivn Durn, and over the coming year, the team would be studying the impact of 4-Phenylbutiric acid (4-PBA) treatment in modulating the inflammatory response that is produced in severe COVID-19 cases. This inflammatory response can lead to excessive and uncontrolled release of cytokines, which are the molecules responsible for the organisation of the bodys defence. This uncontrolled release can cause severe reactions, going as far as triggering vascular hyperpermeability and muti-organ failure. The researchers have proposed controlling this cytokine storm through the help of the infected cells.

Durn said that when the cells are under stress due to the infection, they trigger the release of cytokines, and as the stress level increases, the call for cytokine also increases, leading to this storm. Therefore, Durn said that one possible treatment for this is reducing the stress on cells.

The researcher added that repurposing of 4-PBA, an anti-stress drug, could help in modulating the cellular stress. The drug has been approved for clinical usage in other diseases, and therefore, it should not be hard to apply for repurposing it in terms of COVID-19. Another important point to note is that cellular stress is also present in cases of aging, carcinogenesis or diabetes, all of which are comorbidities flagged as risk factors for COVID-19.

Durn said that the preliminary research was conducted on animal models and the results from the study have shown that mortality caused by cellular stress-induced respiratory failure was completely curbed by 4-PBA. The researcher added that the results also helped in the identification of Binding Immunoglobulin Protein (BiP), a marker of stress blood, as an indicator of situations of cellular stress. This could be explored and measured in affected patients.

The UMA professor said that this could mean that BiP levels could determine the efficacy of 4-PBA treatment as well as be an early indicator of the COVID-19 risk groups. Thus, it could help in the establishment of a correlation between high stress levels and the severity of the inflammation after the infection.

The researcher added that people with comorbidities have cellular stress in the first place, and an infection of coronavirus could make them more prone to fall severely ill or even die. Thus, if the status of a patients cellular stress became known, then healthcare workers would be able to detect their susceptibility before they get infected and also know how to treat them in time.

The study has been financed by the Government of Andalusias COVID-19 Fund and the initial grant has been to the tune of EUR 90,000. There is also a possibility that the project could get a three-year renewal.

Dolphin reproductive research aided by UH drones – West Hawaii Today

A resident dolphin mother and her new calf at the Hilton Waikoloa Village are helping scientists to evaluate the increasing pressures on wild dolphin populations such as Hawaiis spinner dolphins.

The University of Hawaii at Manoas Marine Mammal Research Program and Dolphin Quest are collaborating on a scientific drone study aimed at better understanding the health of dolphin populations.

Scientists are concerned that frequent human activities in the spinner dolphins environment are disrupting the dolphins natural behaviors, which may be adversely affecting their reproduction.

Fabien Vivier, a PhD student with MMRP, has been operating a drone over a pregnant bottlenose dolphin at the Dolphin Quest facility at the Hilton Waikoloa Village on Hawaii Island. He collected baseline data in order to do the same on the open ocean to detect pregnancy in female dolphins. This will help to estimate pregnancy rates for the populations of dolphins in the wild.

Studying dolphins at Dolphin Quest is really helpful, because it allows us to verify our methodologies at a specific known stage of pregnancy, which couldnt be accomplished working only in the wild, Vivier said. This information is quite relevant to studying and conserving other species such as Hawaiis spinner dolphins because, even though the species are different, they share many similarities. If we are able to detect pregnancy from a drone perspective in the bottlenose dolphin, the likelihood of detecting pregnancy in a spinner dolphin is very good.

Scientists said continuing reproduction supports critical wildlife conservation and is also good for the dolphin social group.

Reproduction and calf-rearing is important for dolphin welfare. It is a natural and enriching social behavior for dolphins in the wild and in modern zoos, aquariums and marine life parks, said Dolphin Quest Marine Mammal Reproduction Specialist Holley Muraco. Accredited facilities like Dolphin Quest have excellent reproductive success, which leads to long-term population sustainability and eliminates the need for collection from the wild.

Vivier said the next step of surveying spinner dolphins in the wild is scheduled for October. He plans to tweet about the experience through the MMRPs Twitter account.

Opinion: Iain Macwhirter: The left must stop making fools of themselves with daft campaigns – HeraldScotland

FOR most of the 20th century being on the political left meant supporting a set of principles dating from the European Enlightenment. Humanism, progress, freedom of speech, scientific objectivity, tolerance. Somehow in the 21st century, the left seems to be choosing a different course.

Last week, many supposed left-wingers openly celebrated Edinburgh University's cancelling of David Hume, arguably the greatest philosopher of the Enlightenment.

Hume's name is to be erased from the university precincts because of a 1758 footnote which suggested he thought non-white races were incapable of becoming civilised. The David Hume Tower will now be called 40 George Square. This is a bit like cancelling the Parthenon because the Greeks held slaves and calling the Acropolis by its Athens post code.

Robert Burns is accused of racial iniquity because he considered working on a slave plantation in the West Indies a career move which was common amongst his contemporaries. Yet his poetic works, from A Man's a Man to The Slave's Lament, should demonstrate to anyone sensible that Burns was no racist bigot, though like Hume he was a product of his times.

This silly inquisition of historical figures has become an obsession. Even Sartre and De Beauvoir are sin-binned along with Einstein and Bertrand Russell. Many of these self-righteous accusers believe themselves to be followers of Karl Marx without understanding his debt to philosophers like Hume, Kant and Hegel, who would all fail the woke test of moral probity.

Marx himself wrote far worse than any of Hume's footnotes. In On The Jewish Question the father of communism said: What is the worldly religion of the Jew? Huckstering. What is his worldly God? Money. Money is the jealous god of Israel in face of which no other god may exist. It can surely only be a matter of time before Marx himself is cancelled by the witch-finders of the left.

By comparison, the old rogue Henry Dundas, he of the maligned pillar in St Andrews Square, comes out as rather benign, woke even. The former Scottish Secretary was an abolitionist, albeit a gradualist, and made his name as a lawyer by defending a runaway slave, Joseph Knight, in a case that established that slavery was unlawful in Scotland.

Unthinking denunciation has led to repeated historical blunders. Take the campaign against singing Rule Britannia at the last night of the Proms. A BBC Songs of Praise producer, Cat Lewis, compared this to celebrating the Holocaust. Yet Rule Britannia has nothing to do with slavery or race. Its a unionist anthem, written by a Scottish poet, James Thomson, in 1740 to celebrate the Glorious Revolution and the end of absolutist tyranny.

Many of the Twitter left's obsessions are even more risible. The boycotting of Tory Yorkshire Tea, decolonising the school curriculum, accusing people of cultural appropriation if they wear dreadlocks or fancy dress.

One of the saddest aspects of the contemporary left is an inability to laugh at itself.

During the December general election, Labour's Equalities spokeswoman, Dawn Butler, announced that children are born without a sex. She believes that sex is assigned to babies at birth, presumably by transphobic midwives, and not observed. Biological sex is thus a matter of personal choice not scientific reality.

The Scottish Government seems to agree and will advise people to self-identify their sex in the (delayed) national census, thus rendering the most important collection of social statistics unreliable.

Sexual liberation and the abolition of laws against homosexuality are of course among the greatest achievements of Enlightenment thinking. Trans people are direct beneficiaries of humanism, individualism and intellectual freedom. But the gender left seems to prefer dogmatism. Ms Butler went on to say that to talk about penises and vaginas doesn't help because then you're saying that a transwoman isn't a woman.

To suggest that a transgender woman is not literally female is, in her view, transphobic. She went further and said that it is a hate crime.

This has nothing to do with trans rights since no one is suggesting that transgenderism should be made illegal or should lead to discrimination. Yet, feminist writers like JK Rowling, Julie Blindel and Beatrix Campbell have been vilified for arguing that sex is real, and that if saying so is transphobic then so are textbooks on human reproduction.

Hate crime is more than an empty threat too. Under the Scottish Government's Hate Crime Bill, such remarks could very well lead to prosecution for stirring up hatred, if enough people claim they feel abused or threatened by them. It doesn't matter that you had no intention of abusing or threatening anyone. Thus has a supposedly left-wing leader, Nicola Sturgeon, adopted a policy that even the Scottish Police Federation say will damage freedom of speech.

So why has the left departed from liberal values? Well, possibly because most of the great campaigns of the liberal era have been won. Abortion is legal, as is homosexuality, same sex marriage and no-fault divorce. Public attitudes towards sexual minorities, including transwomen, have changed out of all recognition. From being feared and demonised, gay and trans people are now celebrated in the media for their creativity and vision.

Women are legally equal under the law and even the gender pay gap is disappearing at the BBC. Similarly, no one thinks black people should be discriminated against, apart from a handful of knuckle-dragging racists. The British Social Attitudes Survey repeatedly confirms that British people are more liberal and open minded than at any time in history.

Perhaps the left is just a victim of it own success. Youthful radicals, devoid of targets, have taken to attacking statues, biology and what is called white privilege, the intersectional doctrine that all white people are racist even if they aren't.

The left used to celebrate being colour blind to race. Martin Luther King said that people should be judged on the content of their character rather than the colour of their skin. Now race writers like Reni Eddo-Lodge proudly say they are no longer talking to white people about race, thus dismissing them because of the colour of their skin.

Environmentalism came in from the cold many years ago and anthropogenic climate change is now a political consensus endorsed by Conservatives like Boris Johnson. Polls show that voters now see global warming as a real and present danger. Oil companies are turning into renewable energy corporations because they realise the fossil fuel economy is dying.

This consensus doesn't leave a lot of room for environmental radicals, which is probably why Extinction Rebellion has been getting into difficulties. Disrupting the green London underground and preventing newspapers being published are actions so counter-productive you'd be forgiven for thinking they were the work of agent provocateurs.

And let's not even start on the drive to defund the police which has largely remained a US phenomenon, despite determined efforts to import to Britain the idea that you can have justice without law-enforcement.

Perhaps this infantile leftism, as Lenin called it, is just a phase, magnified by social media. Perhaps Sir Keir Starmer will halt the left's flight from enlightenment. Hell have to if Labour is to win power again.

SC to hear plea opposing artificial reproduction of animals – ETHealthworld.com

(Representative image)New Delhi, The Supreme Court on Friday agreed to examine a plea seeking directions to declare the use of artificial reproduction technique (ART) on animals as cruel and illegal.

A bench, headed by Chief Justice S.A. Bobde and comprising Justices A.S. Bopanna and V. Ramasubramanian, initially expressed its reservation on entertaining the case, saying that the court is not a science expert, but then agreed to grant a hearing.

Also granting the request of the petitioner to appear in person, the bench issued notice to the Centre, the Animal Welfare Board of India, the National Biodiversity Authority, and others, seeking their response on the plea, which claimed that the ART is unconstitutional, as cruelty is being meted out to animals.

The plea contended that ART performed on livestock/animals are violative of some provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Act, 1960, the Biological Diversity Act, 2002, and the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.

The petitioner argued that artificially reproducing as a principle/policy is by itself cruel and through these artificial processes, pain is inflicted on animals. Citing the Constitution, the plea said it has clearly recognised the welfare of animals.

Church, anti-abortion groups seen threatening women’s health bill in Kenya – Devdiscourse

Anti-abortion and church groups in Kenya are spreading false information about a bill to tackle teenage pregnancy and maternal death, women's rights campaigners said on Friday, warning that lawmakers could be influenced and vote against it.

The Reproductive Healthcare Bill, which is set to be sent to the Senate for debate in the coming days, includes provisions for sex education in schools, assisted reproduction such as surrogacy, and access to safe abortion services when necessary. "If this legislation is not approved, teenage pregnancies, school dropouts, maternal mortality will all get worse," said Stephanie Musho, a human rights lawyer, specialising in sexual and reproductive health issues.

"There has been a lot of false information being put out about the bill which is not helpful," said Musho, adding that this could influence Kenya's male-dominated upper house of parliament. A similar bill was brought before the Senate in 2014, but failed to pass. If the bill passes in the Senate, it will then go to the National Assembly - or lower house - to be voted on, she said.

Some anti-abortion and faith groups in the mainly Christian nation have said the legislation normalises underage sex and would allow LGBT+ people to have children through surrogacy, something women's groups say is not contemplated in the bill. Critics of the proposed law say it also promotes widespread abortion, which is only permitted under Kenya's constitution when a woman's life or health is in danger and emergency treatment is required.

The bill would not change that, women's groups say, but could save the lives of thousands of women who die from botched abortions in backstreet clinics. An estimated 2,600 women and girls die annually in Kenya from complications related to unsafe abortions, according to Health Ministry data. That accounts for 35% of all maternal deaths.

The bill also stipulates that every health care provider is obliged to provide family planning services to women who need them and directs authorities to provide free antenatal care, delivery care and postnatal care for all women and girls. Plans for the provision of sex education for children aged 10-17 and for adolescents to be able to access sexual and reproductive health services would help reduce high rates of unwanted teenage pregnancy, women's groups say.

According to data from the United Nations children's agency, UNICEF, more than 23% of Kenyan girls get pregnant before they are 18. No date has been set for the bill to be sent to the Senate, but groups such as the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) urged the chamber in a letter last month to scrap it.

"The bill normalises underage sex and goes further to open the children between the ages of 10-17 that they should receive contraceptives, safe abortion, and comprehensive sex education which teaches that sex is for pleasure and sexual pleasure is a right," said the letter, which was also sent to the Thomson Reuters Foundation. "Such behaviour would lead to increase demand for abortion and eventually unstable families in Kenya," it said.

From The Plow To Birth Control: How Technology Reshapes Relationships – wgbh.org

We are all creatures of the technology that has existed in our lifetimes, according to Debora Spar. Not surprisingly, the former president of the private women's liberal arts school, Barnard College, is a champion of modern conveniences that have saved many women from domestic drudgery.

Im a big fan of the refrigerator as a massive technology for womens emancipation, she said with a chuckle.

Not so long ago, chores that were considered womens work feeding a family and washing everybodys clothes by hand were a full-time job.

Its only once you get, particularly washing machines and refrigerators, that womens work actually becomes manageable in something less than a full week, explained Spar, who is now a professor at Harvard Business School.

It was easier for Spar to become a successful working mother because she had access to those liberating inventions, along with a car and contraception, she said.

In a time of social distancing, during the coronavirus pandemic, we may be more aware than ever that our family lives and even our love lives are closely entwined with the technology that is all around us. However, according to Spar, machines have been reinventing humans and their relationships since the days of the ancient plow, which likely led to the birth of marriage itself.

Once weve built these tools, whether theyre farming implements or computers, they begin to shape us in really powerful ways, she explained.

Spar is mostly positive about the rapid technological changes she has witnessed in her lifetime. Her new book, Work Mate Marry Love: How Machines Shape Our Human Destiny, is a journey through the technologies from the plow, to the steam engine, to the refrigerator and beyond that have affected when, how, and with whom we partner up. But it also glimpses into a future where there is no master plan for how the most advanced technologies that humans have built will further evolve and change us.

If that sounds like a scary future, then it should also be a call to action, says Spar.

Take the world of assisted reproduction. While rules for the use of in vitro fertilization (I.V.F.) are more lax in the United States, many countries have strict government guidelines about the procedure.

Spar urges government regulators in the U.S. to start to imagine where these technologies are going to go and then put guidelines around them.

According to Spar, a technology known as in vitro gametogenesis (I.V.G.) might one day allow multiple people, of the same or different sex, to potentially conceive a child together, even though the idea of poly-parenting raises all sorts of ethical concerns.

If we just let technologies evolve on their own, bad things are going to happen along with the good things, she explained. But we have the ability to stop that not to put the technology back into the bottle but to guide it, so that we get the benefits without leaving ourselves open to all of these risks.

Spar also makes a plea for regulators to consider how, without government intervention and cost controls, technological developments could exacerbate inequality.

Rich people will get access to them and poor people wont, she explained. We need governments to step in here and figure out how we can at least soften some of these implications.

Otherwise, she fears we could be pushing towards what begins to feel like revolutionary times.

A recent study at a local high school found that teenagers just needed a little something added to their vegetables to make them more appetizing.

Christopher DAdamo, PhD, Director of the Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, said a recent study at a local high school found that teenagers just needed a little something added to them.

We found that by simply adding spices and herbs to the vegetables in the National School Lunch Program offerings at Cristo Rey Jesuit [High School in Baltimore, Maryland], we were able to increase vegetable intake in a demographic that has been very challenging to do so, said DAdamo said.

On days when veggies were sprinkled with spices, teenagers ate 18.2% more compared to days when vegetables only were prepared with salt and oil.

DAdamo believes you can achieve the same results at home.

We did a whole bunch of sensory testing with flavor and aroma and sight and so on, and came up with some recipes, DAdamo said.

The spices and herbs were added to vegetables such as carrots, cauliflower, broccoli and green beans.

We used readily-available spices and herbs in this study things like black pepper, red pepper, ginger, cinnamon. Dill was a popular one, he said.

Frozen vegetables used in the study were steamed or sauted also with ingredients such as onion and garlic powders.

More people have access to frozen vegetables than they would fresh in a lot of the underserved communities where we work, he said.

According to the study, Black teens living in economically-underserved urban areas eat vegetables at levels far below recommendations. A goal of the study was to try to figure out how to change that.

DAdamo is optimistic about the studys findings because of the potential for broad public health impact.

The study was done on behalf of the National school lunch program that serves 30 million students each school day. Thats about five billion meals per year with a $13 billion annual budget.

Its been noted that vegetables have been getting thrown away in many instances, DAdamo said. And were helping the vegetables get consumed as opposed to getting thrown away so were very excited.

While DAdamo said getting kids to eat more vegetables could play a small but significant role in helping to prevent obesity and other diet-related health conditions, he notes that spices and herbs have been shown to help adults improve their diets too.

I am very careful about keeping up with proven cancer screening interventions, says Amy Tiersten, MD, clinical breast medical oncologist at Mount Sinai. She stays current on preventative tests like colonoscopy, skin cancer exams, and gynecologic follow-ups.

Late diagnoses are a leading cause of premature death due to cancer. Interventions, like those Dr. Tiersten recommends, allow for early detection and diagnosis where patients can start treatment earlier. This is especially impactful in breast, cervical, and colorectal cancers.

The American Cancer Society recommends:

Colonoscopies begin at age 45.

Pap smears to test for HPV/cervical cancer should start at age 21 and be scheduled every 3 years, not annually.

Mammograms are optional at age 40, but should be done annually at age 45-54. After age 55 schedule mammograms every two years.

Ten years after the HPV vaccine was introduced, there is compelling evidence that were on track to eradicate cervical cancer within decades. A June 2019 study reviewed 60 million individuals, mostly girls and women, eight-year post-vaccination status and found that the vaccine has exceeded expectations.

The CDC recommends both boys and girls get the HPV vaccine at ages 11-12, with the second dose within a year. Its recommended up to age 26 for women and age 21 for men.

Newer versions of the vaccine require two doses instead of three, ensuring adherence to the full vaccination schedule. As well, its gender-neutral and targets more HPV strains.

Our daily diet choices play a powerful role in cancer prevention, reminds Dr. Terry Wahls, author of The Wahls Protocol series. For optimal cancer prevention, she aims for 9 cups of plant-based foods each day: 3 cups of greens, 3 cups of sulfur-rich foods like cabbage, onions, or mushrooms, and 3 cups of color from berries.

We can choose to eat more greens and non-starchy vegetables and berries to markedly reduce the risk of developing cancer (and surviving cancer if it is diagnosed), she explains. Or we can choose the standard American diet, full of sugar and flour, which drives up insulin and insulin-like growth hormone and have a much higher risk of pre-cancers and overt cancers.

LaShyra Lash Nolen, an MD candidate at Harvard Medical School, points out that Black women have a disproportionately higher rate of mortality from breast cancer than white women, according to 2016 research.

Therefore, I think it is so important for me, as a young Black woman, to take agency over my body, shared Nolen. One way I do this is by regularly performing a physical exam of my breasts to search for abnormalities or unusual lumps.

She adds that, sometimes, women allow others to know their bodies better than they do themselves, but that this has to change in order to detect cancers at earlier stages and improve outcomes.

As an American Cancer Society Research Professor and Associate Dean for Oncologic Sciences at Brown University, Dr. Wafik El-Deiry says its important to remember that half of all cancer is preventable. One of his preventive efforts is to limit or moderate alcohol consumption, as alcohol has been linked to cancers of the mouth, throat, liver, colon, breast, and others.

Be aware and keep in the back of your mind that this is a substance that can do harm, he advises. El-Deiry says theres a lot of evolving and emerging data on the association between alcohol and cancer, but that the relationship does exist.

How much is too much? The American Cancer Society advises no more than 2 drinks per day for men and 1 drink per day for women.

Jeffrey Meyerhardt, MD, MPH, medical oncologist for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, works hard to maintain a healthy body weight. He cites consistent evidence in observational studies that link obesity and higher BMI with a variety of cancers, including colorectal, ovarian, and pancreatic.

In particular, he cited a 2003 study that analyzed the relationship between body weight and mortality from cancer in nearly one million American adults. When the heaviest participants had a BMI of 40, death rates from all cancers were 62% higher in women and 52% higher in men when compared to those of normal weight.

I eat a balanced diet of real food. The less processed, the better! says Allison Betof Warner, MD, Ph.D. of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Of course, this melanoma medical oncologist splurges and doesnt always eat healthy (like the rest of us!), but when she does, moderation is key.

While no single food can prevent cancer, a well-rounded diet with a variety of vegetables, fruits, and grains can go a long way toward risk reduction.

I try to live by the 80/20 rule, she caveats. Thats 80% whole, healthy foods in balanced proportions and 20% treats and other less healthy stuff.

I make sure to get plenty of Vitamin D, says Kevin Dawravoo, MD, hematologist and medical oncologist at Northwestern Medicine Cancer Center Warrenville. He cites numerous studies that support the anti-cancer effects of this nutrient. Anyone can check for a vitamin D deficiency with a simple blood test at their doctors office. That deficiency was linked in a 2014 study to a greater risk for more aggressive prostate cancer.

The best source for vitamin D is the sun, but new research says sunblock does not compromise the absorption of the vitamin. Fish is the best food source for vitamin D, including salmon, rainbow trout, and swordfish, as well as fish oil/cod liver.

Bhanote cited a 2004 study that found chronic stress can impair the bodys immune response and contribute to the development of cancer.

A variety of sources like cell phones, wifi, power lines, and battery-powered cars bombard us every day with EMFs, or electromagnetic fields. Dr. Jonathan Stegall, an integrative oncologist and medical director of The Center for Advanced Medicine in Atlanta, says he tries to limit his exposure to EMFs.

A global study found that larger families, those with many children, have a reduced risk of cancer. And thats not just the nuclear family. Did you know you can get paid to prevent cancer? Roshni Rao, MD, Chief of the Division of Breast Surgery at New-York Presbyterian Hospital and Columbia University Medical Center and says even she participates in clinical trials. I was part of an MRI trial where I was in [the] machine for over an hour, and I got paid $25!, she said.

Shes also participating in the T-MIST trial, a national study working to identify how often women should get mammograms and what type of mammogram to get. Rao says this trial is currently open at Columbia and seeking up to 165,000 women to participate.

I drink a few cups of green tea or coffee every day, says William W. Li, MD, author of Eat to Beat Disease: The New Science of How Your Body Can Heal Itself. After 20 years of cancer prevention research, he says hes well aware of the scientific evidence that points to tea and coffee doing the body good.

They each contain different types of polyphenols (micronutrients from plant-based food), but they all activate our bodys key health defense systems (starving cancer, feeding our healthy gut bacteria, repairing damaged DNA, improving immunity) that help us resist cancer. From lab studies to clinical trials to large-scale public health studies showing that tea or coffee lowers risk across different forms of cancers, I consider it a no-brainer to drink these beverages. And its a cherry on top that he loves the taste!

The lead authors of a large-scale study from the University of Glasgow in 2018 now know its best to keep screentime to a minimum. They analyzed nearly 400,000 people and found a strong correlation between higher screentime and a higher risk of all-cause mortality, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. This was independent of known cancer-causing factors like smoking, BMI, and diet.

The more discretionary, or leisure, time spent on tablets, smartphones, and other media devices directly contributes to a sedentary lifestyle, the result of which is lower physical fitness, grip strength, and overall poor health.

Nearly half the deaths from an astounding 12 different cancers can be attributed to smoking cigarettes: liver, colorectal, lung, oral and throat, esophageal, larynx, stomach, pancreas, bladder, kidney, cervix, and acute myeloid leukemia. Thats why its a smoke-free life for Dr. Wafik El-Deiry, Associate Dean for Oncologic Sciences at Brown University. While fewer people smoke in 2019, plenty are still addicted to one of the single-most unhealthy habits.

He does note that quitting smoking can have a positive impact, but that the risk never fully goes away compared to the general population. It can take 8-10 years to truly minimize the risks associated with cigarette smoking.

Likewise, Dr. El-Deiry isnt vaping, either.

The message needs to get out that [vaping] is potentially cancer causing and we have to be aware, he warns. The more we talk about itto save anyoneis worth it.

He says the more we learn about vaping the more we realize how unsafe it is in different ways. The vapor exposes users to chemicals known to cause cancer, for instance. And while e-cigs have their place for smokers trying to quit, the vape pens arent benign. El-Deiry reminds that no substantial research has yet been completed on the relationship between vaping and cancer.

The National Institutes of Health warns that teens are vaping in record numbers; higher than opioid or marijuana use.

Dr. Katherine Crew, director of the Clinical Breast Cancer Prevention Program at New York-Presbyterian and Columbia University Medical Center, walks at least a mile every day. For a busy oncologist, its not always easy to find time to lead a healthy, active lifestyle, but I try to incorporate it into my daily routine.

Each of those steps is worth the time. Walking a single mile each day at a moderate 20-minute pace can reduce mortality in breast cancer patients by as much as 40% and almost 30% in prostate cancer patients. Risk for endometrial cancer is also reduced by a moderate intensity walking regimen.

Dr. Crew also takes the stairs whenever its humanly possible to gain an extra burst of physical activity in her day.

As an exercise oncologist, Kathryn Schmitz, PhD gets as much movement as she recommends. Before heading outdoors though, I slap on the sunscreen, since exercise increases the risk of melanoma by 28%. While this 2016 study found that exercise reduces the risk for 10 different cancers, it increased risk for malignant melanoma significantly.

Schmitz echoed the researchers assumption that increased time exercising or enjoying leisure physical activity increased exposure to the sun, which in turn increased the incidence of skin cancer. If youre spending time outside, be sure to wear a broad spectrum sunblock with SPF 30 or higher and remember that water resistant is not the same as waterproof.

Stratospheric ozone depletion is implicated in an increase in skin cancer incidence, like melanoma, and scientists expect to see a continuation over the next couple of decades.Exposure to air pollution increases the risk of breast cancer in premenopausal women. And the very air we breathe has been deemed carcinogenic by WHO, citing a direct correlation to nearly a quarter-million lung cancer deaths in 2010 alone.

Tree nuts like almonds, walnuts, and pecans can decrease your risk of colon cancer, which is why Kevin Dawravoo, MD, hematologist and medical oncologist at Northwestern Medicine Cancer Center Warrenville, makes them a regular part of his diet.

For men and women, a 2018 study found a statistically significant link between eating nuts three times per week and a reduction in colorectal cancer risk.

Another 2018 study found that stage 3 colon cancer patients who had two 1-ounce servings of tree nuts (which included walnuts, cashews, almonds, pistachios, hazelnuts, pecans macadamia nuts, and Brazil nuts) each week were 42% more likely to experience disease-free survival and 57% greater chance of overall survival.

Turn up the flavor experience of roasted vegetables, rice, soup, smoothies, and tea by adding turmeric. This Indian spice, most common in curries, has an earthy sweet-pungent flavor and bright orange hue that can truly transform any food. That, and the cancer-preventative benefits, are why Roshni Rao, MD, Chief of the Division of Breast Surgery at New-York Presbyterian Hospital and Columbia University Medical Center, loves to eat turmeric-laden foods.

Most of the studies do show a benefit from this anti-inflammatory, and there is no study that shows that it is detrimental, she says.

A 2015 study reviewed the multifaceted role of curcumin (the source of turmeric) in cancer prevention, and found that it can suppress initiation, progression, and metastasis of a variety of tumors.

UCLA-led team of scientists discovers why we need sleep | UCLA – UCLA Newsroom

Prolonged sleep deprivation can lead to severe health problems in humans and other animals. But why is sleep so vital to our health? A UCLA-led team of scientists has made a major advance in answeringthis question and has shown for the first time that a dramatic change in the purpose of sleep occurs at the age of about 2-and-a-half.

Before that age, the brain grows very rapidly. During REM sleep, when vivid dreams occur, the young brain is busy building and strengthening synapses the structures that connect neurons to one another and allow them to communicate.

Dont wake babies up during REM sleep important work is being done in their brains as they sleep, said senior study author Gina Poe, a UCLA professor of integrative biology and physiology who has conducted sleep research for more than 30 years.

After 2-and-a-half years, however, sleeps primary purpose switches from brain building to brain maintenance and repair, a role it maintains for the rest of our lives, the scientists report Sept. 18 in the journal Science Advances. This transition, the researchers say, corresponds to changes in brain development.

All animals naturally experience a certain amount of neurological damage during waking hours, and the resulting debris, including damaged genes and proteins within neurons, can build up and cause brain disease. Sleep helps repair this damage and clear the debris essentially decluttering the brain and taking out the trash that can lead to serious illness.

Nearly all of this brain repair occurs during sleep, according to senior author Van Savage, a UCLA professor of ecology and evolutionary biology and of computational medicine, and his colleagues.

I was shocked how huge a change this is over a short period of time, and that this switch occurs when were so young, Savage said. Its a transition that is analogous to when water freezes to ice.

The research team, which included scientists with expertise in neuroscience, biology, statisticsand physics, conductedthe most comprehensive statistical analysis of sleep to date, using data from more than 60 sleep studies involving humans and other mammals. They examined data on sleep throughout development including total sleep time, REM sleep time, brain size and body size and built and tested a mathematical model to explain how sleep changes with brain and body size.

The data were remarkably consistent: All species experienced a dramatic decline in REM sleep when they reached the human developmental equivalent of about 2-and-half years of age. The fraction of time spent in REM sleep before and after that point was roughly the same, whether the researchers studied rabbits, rats, pigs or humans.

REM sleep decreases with the growth in brain size throughout development, the scientists found. While newborns spend about 50% of their sleep time in REM sleep, that falls to about 25% by the age of 10 and continues to decrease with age. Adults older than 50 spend approximately 15% of their time asleep in REM. The significant dropoff in REM sleep at about 2-and-a-half happens just as the major change in the function of sleep occurs, Poe said.

Sleep is as important as food, Poe said. And its miraculous how well sleep matches the needs of our nervous system. From jellyfish to birds to whales, everyone sleeps. While we sleep, our brains are not resting.

A chronic lack of sleep likely contributes to long-term health problems such as dementia and other cognitive disorders, diabetes, and obesity, to name a few, Poe said. When you start to feel tired, she said, dont fight it go to bed.

I fought sleep and pulled all-nighters when I was in college, and now think that was a mistake, Savage said. I would have been better off with a good nights sleep. Now when I feel tired, I dont have any guilt about sleeping.

For most adults, a regular seven-and-a-half hours of sleep a night is normal and time lying awake doesnt count, Poe says. While children need more sleep, babies need much more, roughly twice as much as adults. The large percentage of REM sleep in babies is in stark contrast to the amount of REM sleep observed in adult mammals across an enormous range of brain sizes and body sizes. Adult humans have five REM cycles during a full night of sleep and can have a few dreams in each cycle.

A good nights sleep is excellent medicine, Poe says. And its free.

Co-authors of the study are Junyu Cao, who conducted research in Savages laboratory and is now an assistant professor at the University of Texas at Austin; Alexander Herman, an assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities; and Geoffrey West, a physicist who is the Shannan Distinguished Professor at the Santa Fe Institute.

Arthrem, which has been sold as a joint mobility supplement, will be taken off the shelves after Medsafe reached a settlement with the company that makes it.

Arthrem has been linked to serious cases of liver harm.

As part of the settlement, medical regulatory body Medsafe withdrew its prosecution of Promisia Integrative Ltd over Arthrem.

Promisia accepted it breached the Medicines Act, and agreed to stop making, advertising and selling Arthrem.

Arthrem has been linked to serious cases of liver harm.

Following warnings to the company that its advertising of Arthrem breached the Medicines Act, Medsafe launched its prosecution against Promisia in January 2019.

The companys claims about Arthrems use for arthritis effectively made the product a medicine, which was unapproved, Medsafe said.

A settlement was preferable given how long a court case would take, said Medsafe group manager Chris James.

James said the potentially harmful product was illegally marketed to the public as a dietary supplement, with fewer safety controls, when it should have been subjected to the more rigorous controls required for medicines.

Despite the warnings, Promisia continued to sell Arthrem in New Zealand and overseas.

Associate Professor Jessica Lai, of Victoria Universitys School of Business and Government, said the Arthrem example showed New Zealand possibly needed stricter regulation of dietary supplements.

Getting regulatory approval for a medicine is expensive. You need to submit evidence of its safety and efficacy, Lai said.

In contrast, dietary supplements do not need regulatory approval. They are regulated within our food safety regime.

Arthrem, which was sold as a joint mobility supplement, will be taken off the shelves.

However, the situation with Arthrem highlights the problem that the legal line between a medicine and a dietary supplement is fuzzy. If a product falls within that fuzziness, the temptation is to market the product as a dietary supplement to avoid the process and costs of regulatory review.

There were reports of 46 cases of adverse reactions associated with the use of Arthrem by the end of February, 2020.

Medsafe had laid nine charges relating to breaches of section 20 of the Medicines Act 1981. The maximum penalty for a company for a breach of section 20 is a $100,000 fine.

Promisia was first warned in 2016 that its advertising of Arthrem breached the Medicines Act.
