Don’t Wait For The COVID Vaccine, The Cure Is In Your Gut – Anti Aging News

The following article was written by Christine Bishara, MD who is the A4M member of the month, she practices preventive and personalized patient care, and believes in a proactive approach to healthcare.Dr. Bisharas expertise is in integrative medical weight loss and gut health.

While everyone focuses on a cure-all vaccine, why hasnt anyone focused on why some people aren't getting sick from COVID-19?

The past six months have been monumental for all healthcare workers. While some were considered frontline heroes, some have had their offices closed and labelled as non-essential. Theres no denying one thing however--this COVID pandemic has placed every single persons immune system on the frontline.

Since the pandemic affected the NYC area early, my husband, a Pulmonologist/Intensivist, was thrust on to the front lines in late March. From the beginning, he and I would have nightly conversations about his patients in the ICU and the treatment protocols they were using. I was interested to discover that the majority of his sickest patients had very high levels of inflammatory markers and that some of the treatments being used focused on inhibiting one of these inflammatory markers--Interleukin-6. Interleukin-6 is also the inflammatory marker involved in the deadly Cytokine Storm that seems to cause havoc in vulnerable individuals leading to more severe COVID related illness. I was also interested to hear that aside from the already identified high risk and vulnerable population of patients, a large portion of those in the ICU had a BMI of over 30. One night, during one of our conversations, my husband point blank asked me if those with high BMIs had high IL-6 levels at baseline.

Thats when the lightbulb went off!

Interleukin 6 is a pro-inflammatory marker subclinically elevated in certain high-risk individuals. This includes those with heart disease, diabetes and obesity. These were the same individuals frequently referred to as having inflammation. I began to try to put the pieces together of what he was seeing in his sickest ICU patients and what I already knew about the gut health of overweight and high-risk patients.

Also, knowing that kids were not getting as sick as adults, I started focusing my attention on what in particular afforded children this protection. Childrens guts are overall healthier than adults. During our research, I honed in on a particular gut microbe called Bifidobacterium which was present in much higher levels in children than in adults. The levels start to decline as we age and are very low in the elderly and those with the risk factors noted, but what made this even more significant was that Bifidobacterium was also directly involved in inhibiting interleukin-6 levels and regulating the same immune pathways that COVID was affecting. The clinical findings seemed to add up, but I wanted to make sure that the molecular pathways were correlating with the clinical data, so along with two scientist colleagues, we further researched the molecular pathways and indeed they matched up. We believe the higher presence of this gut microbe which functions as an immune regulator is what is protecting children from more severe infection.

There have been numerous studies over the years on the benefits of Bifidobacterium, especially the strains prevalent in the pediatric population. Studies on the administration of Bifidobacterium in certain conditions including asthma, inflammatory bowel, necrotising enterocolitis and even influenza have shown positive results. We highlight this in our research article.

Our findings were sparked by a spontaneous conversation between two married physicians and catalyzed by doctors of various specialties. This is the beauty of medicine-doctors with different expertise coming together as we search for discoveries.

Estimates on the completion of a viable vaccine are Spring 2021 at the earliest. While we wait, why not try to build our immune system holistically and supplement with probiotics containing Bifidobacterium? Probiotics represent a viable and virtually harmless addition to the current vitamin regimen we take ourselves and recommend to our patients. Until that day arrives, Ill be enjoying my morning vitamin C and D cocktail" with a dose of Bifidobacterium.

Keeping COVID at bay – Mountain Xpress

Although COVID-19 has fundamentally altered our society, Asheville chiropractor Donald Acton hasnt changed his message. The key to staying healthy is a healthy immune system, he says.

And across the broad spectrum of health care, practitioners of conventional Western medicine as well as alternative and complementary therapies agree: Scientific studies show that people with healthy immune systems are less likely to suffer life-threatening complications from COVID-19.

Abbas Rakhshani of the Asheville-based Yoga Wellness Center sees building a strong physical and mental constitution as an effective way to stave off the ravages of any pathogen that comes along.

The universe is continuously in the process of renewing itself, says Rakhshani, who has a doctorate in yogic sciences. A hurricane destroys the weak vegetation and makes room for the new. So does the forest fire and any other natural disaster. In my personal view, a pandemic is not much different.

Both men believe that the therapies they offer help strengthen the immune system, and the benefits arent limited to combating COVID-19.

Your body doesnt need help to be healthy, Acton maintains. It just cant function at 100% when something obstructs the process.

Those obstructions can be chemical (e.g., drugs, whether over-the-counter or prescription) or mechanical (stress on the nervous system), he explains. Other important factors include adequate rest, a nutritious natural foods diet and regular aerobic exercise, which promotes a healthy circulatory system.

Mary Cissy Majebe, who founded the Chinese Acupuncture and Herbology Clinic in Asheville, sounds a similar note. She cites three practices that can strengthen immune response: long walks (an hour or more, and they can be leisurely), eating a healthy diet and getting sufficient sleep. Majebe has also posted a video on YouTube about how to respond to the threat posed by COVID-19.

Its a big difference getting something and cooking it yourself instead of pulling up to a drive-thru window, she says. There is no diet thats perfect for everyone, because peoples bodies are different. But eating well, getting outdoors for an hour a day and sleep are three things everyone can do without going to a doctor.

But if these providers messages havent changed, some practitioners lives definitely have.

Dr. Aneela Cox of Integrative Family Medicine in Asheville was working at a clinic in Tucson, Ariz., when the pandemic was declared in March. Staff immediately mobilized to cope with the virus, and since so little was known about it, the protocols kept changing as new information came in. The clinic seemed to be in a constant state of flux.

Then Coxs mother, who has asthma, was diagnosed with the virus. I noticed that my emotional health was suffering, says Cox.

To bring things back in balance, she joined an online meditation group three times a week and then started her own heart-centered meditation group. She stepped up online communication to stay connected with friends and family, saw an acupuncturist once a week and made sure she got enough rest, ate sensibly and exercised regularly.

In my opinion, using a multidisciplinary approach to boost our well-being is key, Cox says now. With my recent move from Tucson to Asheville, Im taking the opportunity to meditate, eat healthy, exercise and spend time in nature.

Majebe, meanwhile, also cites another COVID-related issue.

Social isolation is a big problem, she says, noting that her mother, who is 90, is struggling with that. We have to ask ourselves what can we change, what cant we change and what can we let go.

But while that added stress also has an adverse effect on the immune system, says Majebe, those basics adequate sleep, healthy foods and exercise can mitigate the harm.

For the same reason, Cox recommends maintaining social contact at a distance, either in a large indoor space with few people in it or outdoors. Insufficient social interaction, she points out, can contribute to depression and anxiety, which also tax the immune system.

Scientific studies support these alternative practitioners advice.

Getting outdoors increases the bodys production of vitamin D, and studies have shown that people with adequate levels of this essential nutrient are suffering fewer life-threatening complications from COVID-19. Worldwide, about a billion people have a vitamin D deficiency; although estimates vary, at least one-third of all adults in the U.S., and a higher percentage of older Americans, are said to be deficient. Taking a supplement helps. Other higher-risk groups include office workers (who may spend less time outdoors), people with darker skin, women (especially pregnant women and nursing mothers) and people who wear sunscreen. The same holds true for those with high blood glucose levels, regardless of whether they have diabetes.

High glucose levels at hospital admission are associated with higher death rates. Hyperglycemia is linked to higher levels of inflammation which, in turn, can lead to the often-fatal cytokine storm. Eating fresh foods that are low in carbohydrates can help lower blood glucose levels.

Obesity is also a risk factor for dangerous COVID-19 complications, underscoring the importance of a healthy diet and exercise.

In addition, Majebe urges patients to think about strengthening any areas of weakness in the body, even if they dont show up in lab test results. This, she says, can be accomplished via specific herbal treatments. If you get a lot of respiratory infections, you need to think about strengthening your lungs, she advises. But you also need to look at other systems. COVID attacks lungs, hearts, livers, kidneys, digestive systems everyone seems to have a different response.

In fact, a recently published study in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrologyfound that patients hospitalized for COVID-19 who then develop kidney problems are more likely to die and less likely to regain kidney function if they recover from the disease. The study also found that people admitted to intensive care units were more likely to develop kidney problems than people who recovered without developing serious complications.

Because we know so little about the virus, stresses Cox, we need to keep our immune systems strong. We also need to follow Western medical practitioners advice: Wear a mask when not at home, practice social distancing and wash hands frequently and thoroughly.

In addition, Rakhshani recommends meditative practices and massage.

My practice focuses on ayurvedic medicine and yogic sciences from India, he explains. Our ayurvedic massage boosts the immune system by activating the parasympathetic nervous system. Our mind-body therapies achieve the same goal through breathing practices, physical exercises and meditative techniques.

Majebe, meanwhile, says that people should take steps to fend off a potential second wave of COVID-19 infections this winter.

We dont know how this will act during the cold months, but we need to be prepared, she maintains. I recommend vitamin D and zinc supplements to strengthen the immune system, in addition to eating healthy, exercising outdoors and getting enough sleep.

What Are the Health Benefits of Qigong? Health Essentials from Cleveland Clinic – Health Essentials from Cleveland Clinic

Its safe to say many of us are under more stress than usual these days. And sure, youd love to do something to lower your stress and improve your health. But who has time for that?

Cleveland Clinic is a non-profit academic medical center. Advertising on our site helps support our mission. We do not endorse non-Cleveland Clinic products or services.Policy

Actually, if you have 10 minutes a day, you have enough time to do qigong. This ancient Chinese practice can reduce stress and help your body function at its best.

Integrative medicine specialist Yufang Lin, MD, talks about this age-old practice. It requires no special training or equipment and has some amazing potential health benefits.

Qigong originated in China about 4,000 years ago. It is based on traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) principles, which state that qi, or energy, is present in everyones body.

According to TCM principles, a persons qi must flow throughout the body in order for people to feel their best, Dr. Lin explains. If qi becomes stagnant in a certain area, health problems can occur.

Qigong uses simple poses and breathing patterns to promote a healthy flow and reduce stagnation of qi. Proper flow of qi can help the body engage its own healing processes. The literal translation of qigong is to work with qi.

Qigong is not a form of yoga. Yogas poses tend to require more strength, balance and stretching than qigong. Yoga also originated in ancient India and is not rooted in TCM.

As a child in Taiwan, I would see people doing qigong in the park on my way to school, Dr. Lin recalls. A lot of them were older people. The slow, purposeful movements of qigong are less challenging to your balance. These movements are easy for most people to do and you can modify them. People can also do chair-based qigong if they cant stand.

Dr. Lin says many smaller studies have shown that qigong offers a variety of benefits. However, more large, controlled studies are needed to prove that qigong can treat or even prevent health problems. Still, Dr. Lin says, qigongs potential benefits make it well worth the effort. Its generally safe and easy for nearly anyone to try. Heres what the research says about qigong:

One study found that qigong could reduce symptoms of depression. In this study, those who practiced qigong also experienced less anxiety and better moods as compared to those who didnt. Qigong was also shown to have positive effects on bone and cardiovascular health and improve balance.

Chronic fatigue syndrome is a common disorder that causes extreme tiredness. There is no known cause, and it doesnt go away with rest. It can be difficult or nearly impossible for someone with chronic fatigue to function in their daily life.

In a study, 64 people with chronic fatigue experienced improvements in their symptoms after four months of practicing qigong. They had better mental functioning and less fatigue than those who didnt. If youre tired all the time, and your doctor has ruled out any medical conditions, qigong could help.

Your immune systems job is to fend off unwanted guests like viruses, bacteria and diseases. Thats an important responsibility. And qigong may give your immune system a little extra help.

A review of several studies found that qigong had a noticeable impact on immune functioning. It increased levels of certain immune cells in people who practiced it regularly.

Many people who are undergoing cancer treatment need relief from side effects and the stress of treatment. Often, they turn to alternative medicine practices like acupuncture, yoga or massage. Qigong may have a place on this list, too.

Some evidence suggests that using qigong can help patients with cancer fight fatigue and mood disturbances. This boost may be a welcome relief.

Keep in mind that qigong is not an overnight fix. Like any exercise, you need time to master it to get the full benefits.

While taking a class is helpful, Dr. Lin says this isnt necessary. Many people learn qigong from online videos and instructions. Pay attention to the form and learn it properly. Then you can focus on breathing and being present, Dr. Lin says.

Qigong can help you feel your best plus, its free, easy and doesnt require much time. Not many other wellness activities can make those claims.

Regular exercise such as 30 minutes of walking a day is also an effective way to improve your health, reduce stress and help you sleep better. If you exercise regularly or plan to start, qigong is a great addition to your routine. Working it in could be the healthy one-two punch you need during stressful times.

The science and medicine of human immunology – Science Magazine

Immunology through a human lens

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has underscored the critical need to better understand the human immune system and how to unleash its power to develop vaccines and therapeutics. Much of our knowledge of the immune system has accrued from studies in mice, yet vaccines and drugs that work effectively in mice do not always translate into humans. Pulendran and Davis review recent technological advances that have facilitated the study of the immune system in humans. They discuss new insights and how these can affect the development of drugs and vaccines in the modern era.

Science, this issue p. eaay4014

The mammalian immune system is a remarkable sensory system for the detection and neutralization of pathogens. History is replete with the devastating effects of plagues, and the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is a defining global health crisis of our time. Although the development of effective vaccines has saved many lives, the basic workings of the immune system are complex and require the development of animal models, such as inbred mice. Indeed, research in mice has been enormously productive, and the tremendous insights gleaned have resulted in many Nobel prizes and other accolades. However, past results are not necessarily a reliable guide to the future, and a notable limitation of animal models has been their failure to accurately model some human diseases and their inability to predict human immune responses in many cases. With regard to inbred mice, which have been the principal model of choice for immunology, this is likely due to the compromises that were necessary to create a more tractable and reproducible system for experimentation, such as genetic uniformity and lack of pathogen exposure, as well as the fact that mice are evolutionarily quite distinct. These considerations suggest that direct studies of the human immune system are likely to be extremely rewarding, both from a scientific and a medical perspective.

In the past decade there has been an explosion of new approaches and technologies to explore the human immune system with unprecedented precision. Insights into the human immune response to vaccination, cancers, and viral infections such as COVID-19 have come from high-throughput omics technologies that measure the behavior of genes, mRNA (single-cell transcriptomics), proteins (proteomics), metabolites (metabolomics), cells (mass cytometry), and epigenetic modifications (ATAC-seq), coupled with computational approaches.

Sydney Brenner remarked in 2008, We dont have to look for a model organism anymore. Because we are the model organisms. We propose that studying the immune system in humans, who are genetically diverse and afflicted by a multitude of diseases, offers both a direct link to medicine (i.e., translation) and the very real prospect of discovering fundamentally new human biology. New approaches and technology are now making this area much more approachable, but profiling immunity in humans is but the first step. Computational mining of the data and biological validation in animal models or human organoids are essential next steps, in an iterative cycle that seeks to bridge fundamental and applied science, as well as mouse and human immunology, in a seamless continuum of scientific discovery and translational medicine. This will represent a new paradigm for accelerating the development of vaccines and therapeutics.

Systems biology techniques can be used to probe the human immune response to viral infections and can define molecular signatures that predict disease severity and illuminate the underlying mechanisms of disease.

Although the development of effective vaccines has saved countless lives from infectious diseases, the basic workings of the human immune system are complex and have required the development of animal models, such as inbred mice, to define mechanisms of immunity. More recently, new strategies and technologies have been developed to directly explore the human immune system with unprecedented precision. We discuss how these approaches are advancing our mechanistic understanding of human immunology and are facilitating the development of vaccines and therapeutics for infection, autoimmune diseases, and cancer.

The key role of CSIR in the battle against Covid | Opinion – Hindustan Times

The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), one of the first publicly-funded Science & Technology (S&T) research organisations in India, turns 79 today. CSIR has played a crucial role in shaping the developments of modern Indian society, and the Covid-19 pandemic is no exception. As India is seeing an accelerated increase in cases, there is an urgent need for innovations and products in drugs, diagnostics, surveillance and devices.

In March, CSIR identified the unmet needs, assessed its strengths and capabilities for addressing the pandemic and adopted a multi-pronged strategy of working on diagnostics, surveillance, drugs, hospital assistive devices, personal protective equipment and supply chain and logistics. This strategy is now beginning to yield exciting solutions.

A few days ago, the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) formally approved the first indigenously-developed Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR)/Cas9-based paper diagnostic test. Such a test puts the achievements of Indian innovators on the world map, as it has a resemblance to the similar tests in the United States (US), and yet has its own unique features that make it simpler to use.

Similarly, the generic pharma industry might recollect the years when CSIR laboratories provided cheaper synthesis methods for drugs, as it has done during the current Covid-19 pandemic for remdesivir and favipiravir. Another bit of history might be in the offing as the first-ever Phase-2 clinical trials on a phytopharmaceutical drug candidate has begun after DCGI approval. Likewise, the immunotherapeutic drug, sepsivac has successfully completed Phase-2 trials on critically ill Covid-19 patients, and is now entering Phase-3 trials. CSIR is also working in collaboration with leading pharmaceutical industries for multiple-combination clinical trials in the country.

With its engineering strengths, CSIR has been able to make devices like ventilators in record time, which are positioned to receive regulatory approval soon. CSIR-promoted technology in making rapidly deployable hospitals will also be implemented in the coming weeks.

All these highly-visible developments now set the stage for the next wave of innovations, which promise to catapult India into the league of the most developed nations.

The development of technologies against Sars-CoV-2, within a short time period, has been possible only due to the existing scientific strengths and infrastructure created within the CSIR ecosystem over the past several decades. It is interesting to note that among the many countries that became independent of colonial rule in the middle of the last century, India alone adopted a strong S&T policy later even including it in its Constitution, a strategy that has yielded rich dividends. CSIR being one of the earliest S&T institutions in the country has played a major role in implementing S&T strategies for the development of the country.

Ever since its inception in 1942, CSIR has carried out the pursuit of fundamental science at one end of the S&T canvas, and translated it for societal connect at the other. These distinct-yet-connected aspects demanded that CSIR develop a strong interface with industry and help promote innovations in S&T. The entire spectrum of activities of CSIR, between these two extremes, over the last 78 years, has been fascinating to watch.

The implementation of these required establishing strong S&T infrastructure, promoting scientific entrepreneurship, development of programmes for industrial progress through S&T solutions, and bringing the benefits to society. The recent contributions of CSIR towards Covid-19 mitigation in a short span of a few months exemplify the support that the organisation has provided over the years.

The industrial and societal connect of CSIR has seen many technologies being adopted at such a large scale that these often get masked by the fact that they once were developed in its laboratories.

For example, the technology to make parboiled rice, widely used in many states, was developed at CSIR-Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI), Mysuru. India became one of the top countries worldwide in the production of Mentha, thanks to the pioneering efforts carried out at CSIR-Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine (IIIM), Jammu. The rise of the generic pharmaceutical industry and the goal of making many drugs affordable were facilitated by efforts at CSIR-National Chemical Laboratory (NCL), Pune and CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT), Hyderabad. Yet another illustrative example is how the strong infrastructure like the wind tunnel in CSIR-National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL) at Bengaluru was critical in deploying many strategic programmes in space and defence sectors.

On the occasion of the 79th CSIR Foundation Day, it is worth recalling that the industrial connect has been in the CSIR genes from the beginning. Among the persons who played a critical role in the formation of CSIR was Khwaja Abdul Hamied, the founder of CIPLA. Interestingly, CSIR and CIPLA launched Ciplenza recently for use in Covid-19 patients continuing this decades-old partnership.

The recent partnership of CSIR and Tata Sons for the CRISPR/Cas diagnostic test brings back memories of the support to CSIR at its inception from the house of Tata, which not only gave generous financial support but also garnered public support for funding CSIR.

Thus, promoting socio-economic development of the country through S&T innovations forged in partnership with industry has been a defining feature of CSIR from 1942 to 2020.

From bringing in self-reliance indelible ink to the fight against Covid-19, CSIR has played a vital role and shall do so in any future pandemic or calamity that may emerge.

Struggling To Lose Weight? This MD Says Knowing Your "Weight Loss Type" Will Help – mindbodygreen.com

For all types, if you're struggling to lose weight, I often recommend omitting both gluten and dairy, as these foods can be inflammatory.

Anti-inflammatory foods are also important for promoting hormone balance and digestive function, especially for Warriors, Anchors, and Trailblazers. Begin by omitting sensitivities and incorporating more anti-inflammatory foods and spices, such as turmeric, ginger, blueberries, pineapple, and celery.

Protein is key for Anchors to support adrenal function, while Protector types may want to limit their intake of red meat in favor of more easily digested proteins.

You'll want to omit sugar, refined carbohydrates, and alcohol if you're a type who struggles with Candida overgrowth, most commonly Anchors and Protectors. This type of yeast overgrowth can cause bloating, fatigue, joint pain, and weight gainbut it's often a latent infection overlooked at most doctors' visits.

The Benefits of Touch Therapy for Cancer – Mpls.St.Paul Magazine

When someone is diagnosed with cancer, they go through a barrage of treatments to eliminate or help curb the disease. These powerful therapies often do a number on the cancer. But they also leave behind a trail of symptoms and side effects that linger, causing their own brand of suffering.

Amid traditional medical care, many people are turning to integrative therapies for relief, support, and healing. A growing body of research shows that massage therapy particularly helps with the physical and emotional impact of having cancer, says Spring Saldana, a board-certified massage therapist and massage therapy program chair at Northwestern Health Sciences University in Bloomington.

Saldana can personally and professionally attest to the benefits of oncology massage. She experienced them while being treated for breast cancer and during her recovery. When you go through something like that, you feel very alone, even when you have support, says Saldana, a three-year survivor. Being able to be touched, with care, in the safe space that was providedit did a world of good for me.

Since Saldana trained more than 15 years ago, theres been a shift in the thinking about massage for people who have cancer or are recovering. Then, massage was believed to be too dangerous because it could potentially spread cancer around the body.

Research does not support that theory, instead finding that massage can be beneficial. However, Saldana says, it is important to see a massage therapist who has trained extensively in oncology massage therapy.

There are a lot of people who go through this journey alone, and they dont have to.Forming a relationship with a massage therapist who knows what they're doing with this population would make their journey easier. It would definitely make you feel like your hand is being held through it. Spring Saldana, Northwestern Health Sciences University

Here, just a handful of ways that massage can help people with cancer cope:

Cancer patients experience all manner of pain stemming from surgery, chemotherapy infusions, radiation, or other medications. Its one of the most common and debilitating symptoms they face. But massage can reduce the intensity and severity of pain, according to the American Massage Therapy Association.

Its common for people with cancer to have significant anxiety and depression while confronting many unknowns, both during and after treatment. Massage boosts dopamine and serotonin levels, calming the nervous system through touch, Saldana says.

When going through chemotherapy, many people lose their appetites and experience nausea, constipation, or other digestive problems. Light abdominal massage often can restore order.

Sleep is key to healing, and massage certainly helps with promoting relaxation and rest.

Massage also addresses lymphedema, a common side effect for people with breast cancer especially. If surgeons remove lymph nodes, excess fluid often builds up and causes painful swelling in the arms and legs. Massage can assist with draining that fluid.

When an oncology massage therapist does body work, its different than a regular massage. These therapists have trained extensively in what cancer and treatments do to the body, mind, and spirit. They use different techniques depending on the individuals experience and needs.

Some people can handle a normal touch and frequent massages. Others can tolerate just a light, short massage, perhaps focused on the hands and feet. When even that is too much, some people benefit from Reiki, a form of energy healing that involves a gentle touch or a laying of hands, Saldana says.

Experiencing cancer can be traumatic, and massage helps people release some of that stress and trauma stored in the body. Saldana recommends that cancer patients try massage or healing work during their treatment so that they can release some of that pain along the way.

There are a lot of people who go through this journey alone, and they dont have to, she adds. Forming a therapeuticrelationship with a massage therapist who knows what they are doing with this population would make their journey easier. It would definitely make you feel like your hand is being held through it.

Immunity Tips: 5 Simple Tips To Strengthen Your Immune Function – NDTV

Immunity tips: Regular exercise can ensure a strong immunity

Building immunity is no rocket science, but surely requires some dedication and discipline. The immune system plays the important role of protecting body from harmful substances like bacteria, viruses and germs that causes illness. If you have a weak immune system, not only will you fall sick more often and easily, but it will also make it difficult for you to recover from them. The immune system fights disease-causing germs like virus, bacteria or fungi and help in removing them from the body. It recognises and neutralises effect of harmful substances in the environment and also fights disease causing changes in the body like abnormal growth of cells.

Lifestyle coach Luke Coutinho, in one of his recent posts on Instagram, talks about a few simple ways that can help you build a strong immunity. Following these tips can be especially important during the COVID-19 pandemic. Here's what you need to know:

1. Eat a wholesome and balanced diet: Eat fresh and homemade food, most of the times. Include lots of seasonal fruit and vegetables in your diet. Make sure your diet includes wholegrains, nuts, seeds, lentils and legumes.

Also read:Balanced Diet Essentials: Here's A List Of Expert Recommended Nutrients You Should Add To Your Diet

2. Adequate exercise: Exercising regularly can be your gateway to good health, healthy weight and strong immunity. Along with exercising for one hour or half an hour regularly, make sure that you are also physically active throughout the day. Pranayama, breathing exercises, yoga, squats, walk, climbing stairs or doing household chores are all ways to keep yourself physically active throughout the day.

3. Get good quality sleep: Sleeping well is important for a strong immunity. Getting good quality of sleep is important than the quantity of sleep, informs of Coutinho. Align your body according to the circadian rhythm. Avoid drinking caffeine after 4 pm, make your bedroom comfortable and cosy to sleep well and drink a cup of turmeric milk at bedtime.

Construction Chemical Additives Market Expected To Grow At 9.7% CAGR Of 9.7% Between 2020-25 – Coatings World Magazine

Construction chemicals additive mixtures are kind of specialty chemicals which are added to improve the durability of the building.

Among the different subtypes in concrete admixtures, superplasticizers generated a revenue of $8031.6 million in 2020 and are projected with the highest CAGR of 11.7% during the forecast period.

Rapid urbanization, increasing demand for better infrastructure in the Asia Pacific region is one of the reasons driving the market growth of Construction chemicals additive.

Rapid urbanization and industrialization are expected to accelerate the market growth for the construction chemical additives industry.

Construction Chemicals are the chemical compounds used in construction activities such as residential, non-residential or non-building.

Construction chemicals can also be termed as specialty chemicals.

These compounds can be used either in existing construction projects to speed up the work or in new construction projects to impart durability and strengthen the structures.

Some of the chemical additives help in minimizing the quantities of cement and water used in the construction.

These compounds impart chemical as well as physical properties in applications such as cross-linking or phase change.

Construction chemicals are essential for high-quality concrete and for improving concrete performance. These chemicals also increase the lifespan of the construction work and provide additional protection from environmental hazards.

Construction chemicals are further segmented into concrete additives, waterproofing agents, leveling agents, sealants, adhesives, grout, and mortar.

Concrete additives are kind of additives which are added to construction chemicals, which helps in enhancing the concreteness of the chemical properties as well as physical properties.

Utopia ending explained and season 2 hints – RadioTimes

Just like the Channel 4 original the Amazon remake of Utopia is full of twists and turns, with the final episode concluding with a serious cliffhanger that hints at what we can expect from season two.

I would say it is a very deliberate sort of cliffhanger, series creator Gillian Flynn told RadioTimes.com about the series finale, noting that work on season two is already underway.

We already are just dipping into season two. And Ive told everyone, the world is open, lets see what we want to do.

But how does Utopia season one end, exactly, and what does it all mean? Check out our quick summary and explainer below, but beware obviously well be delving into some pretty serious spoilers below the drop.

Still here? Well, OK lets begin with the bigger points. In the final episode its revealed exactly what Dr Christie (John Cusack) and The Harvest are up to, with the cult-like organisation creating a fake flu pandemic that will require the mass buy-up of Christies vaccine.

The twist? The vaccine actually carries a new virus, created by Jessicas (Sasha Lane) father that will render those who take it sterile, with the intention of halting human reproduction for three generations and eventually solving the issue of overpopulation.

Discovering this, the gang of nerds and Dr Stearns (Rainn Wilson) head to ChristieCo and destroy the vaccine, while Wilson (Desmin Borges) tries to get Christie to film a confession video that will destroy his reputation. Instead, Christie convinces Wilson that his cause is just, turning him to his organisations side for the greater good.

Utopia John Cusack Amazon

After destroying the vaccine the nerds scatter, but cant escape entirely. While Ian (Dan Byrd) and Alice manage to get away Grant (Javon Walton) is arrested, while Becky is picked up by Christie and the turncoat Wilson.

Meanwhile, Arby (Christopher Denham) takes Jessica Hyde back to the yellow house of her childhood, where she reunites with Milner only to learn the horrible truth Milner wasnt after the prophetic Utopia comic after all. Instead, she wanted Jessica, whose blood secretly contains a cocktail of virus that will truly change the world forever.

After taking Jessica captive, in the series final moments Milner walks down into a basement room to approach a surprising figure Jessicas father, still alive and working on a new comic-book page that shows Jessicas injection-scarred back.

Sasha Lane as Jessica Hyde in Utopia (Amazon Prime Video)

I have your daughter, Milner says, just as Jessica opens her eyes again

Theres gonna be morethe ideas I played with as far as Home and where Jessica comes from, and what that background is, and what Christie really wants, are all explained a little bit more in that final episode, Flynn told us.

Nothing gets nailed down, but there is a lot more of a glimpse into things weve been alluding to. For me it really finalises the mythology of the show.

Fans of the original UK Utopia may note that the revelations of this final episode down to the fake-flu-sterilisation story, Wilsons heel-turn and Jessicas blood containing a virus are very close to the finale of Dennis Kellys Utopia series one, which first aired on TV in 2013.

However, there are some key differences in where each character ends up most notably Becky being captured, Jessicas father being introduced earlier and new character Christie surviving to plot again which Flynn suggests will make season two of the US Utopia very different to what Kelly plotted for series two of the original drama.

I didnt even watch much of Denniss second season because mine goes to a different place and takes us to a different ending, Flynn told us and while shes not giving anything away about what we can expect just yet, she seemed confident that more episodes would be on their way.

I wont write every episode myself this time, that was exhausting, so we have our writers room, she said. So thats really where we are, were just now kind of starting out.

But there is a hope and intention to do a season two. Theres certainly enough to play with for sure.

Utopia episodes 1-8 are streaming on Amazon Prime Video now. Want something else to watch? Check out our full TV Guide.

Reproductive Justice Activist Laura Jimnez on America’s History of Forced Sterilizations – Colorlines

On September 14, a host ofcivil rights groups filed acomplaintwith the Department of Homeland Security Office of Inspector General containing allegations by whistleblower Dawn Wooten that immigrant women were forced to have hysterectomies at the ICE detention center in Ocilla, Georgia, where she worked as a nurse. Wooten said that all of the operations were performed by a gynecologist who she referred to as the uterus collector in the complaint. In response, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and more than 160 Democrats demanded that the Department of Human Services launch aninvestigation.

In the letter demanding the investigation, the politicians wrote: These reports hearken back to a dark time in U.S. history in which 32 states passed eugenic-sterilization laws, resulting in the sterilization of between 60 and 70 thousand people in the early 1900s.

The letter is misleading in that it implies that such practices ended during the early 20th century. In truth, the United States has a longand continuingpractice of forcibly sterilizing women of color. For instance, thousands of Native American women had forced hysterectomies in the 1960s and 70s through a federal program with the Indian Health Service. And in North Carolina, more than 7,600 people were sterilized in a state-sanctioned program that did not end until1977.

The organization California Latinas for Reproductive Justice (CLRJ) fights for survivors of forced sterilization while also leading efforts to end this government-mandated practice. Here, Executive Director Laura Jimnez explains the ways that the scientific theory of eugenics, which advocates selective reproduction in order to improve the human species, advances policies that prey on Black and Brown bodies. She also emphasizes that there is a need for a mass national reeducation in order to protect reproductivehealth.

Colorlines: While horrible, what is happening at the ICE detention centers is not surprising given this countrys history of forced sterilizations of women of color. Why do you think so many, including media outlets, have reacted withshock?

Laura Jimnez: So much of it has to do with this part of our history not being taught in schools. We talk about racism in official wayslike racism and slaverybut not the other ways that systemic racism has affected multiple communities in the United States over the past 500 years. Thats why people dont really understand medical racism and these occurrences come as a completeshock.

CL: Do you think this incident, which has been widely reported, could finally let people know that thishappens?

LJ: I compare it to the issue weve been struggling with around state violence against Black people. How many times have we seen a Black person [attacked] by an agent of the state? [Rodney King in 1991 was the first time to see it on camera]and in 29 years, its happened over and over again. So I dont think this will be the one. We are talking about Black and brown bodies having medical violence used against them. These are bodies that dont matter to the media and government. Also, until we start learning about eugenics in school, people will continue to notknow.

CL: Discuss how eugenics connects to what happened in the ICE detentioncenter.

LJ: The practice of eugenic science was not limited to the early 1900s like we read about. Eugenics is integrated insidiously into different systems. There are all of these theories as to what kinds of people are fit to reproduce. And Black and Brown people are not, according to the mentality of the dominant culture, deemed fit to reproduce. So there are all of these ways to stop population growth that is a part of eugenics. Forced sterilization is one of the more egregious ways we see thishappen.

These were immigrant bodies that this happened to in this particular case. And right now there is a president who talks about people from outside of the country in particular ways that [suggest] they are not fit to reproduce. Black, Brown, disabled, trans, queer, poor bodies [are the bodies being targeted] not only in medicine but in immigration policy and how people are sentenced in certain crimes. Everything needs to be seen in this context ofeugenics.

Its also important to note in this case that the whistleblower is a Black woman living in rural Georgia. So we are not just talking about Black and Brown women who had violence committed against them, but this Black woman who is a potentialtarget.

CL: What work does California Latinas for Reproductive Justice do around forced sterilizations? And how did the organization become involved in thisarea?

LJ: A lot of our work has been education around this issue. About five years ago, we worked with the producer and director of the film No Ms Bbes [about Mexican people who underwent forced hysterectomies in a Los Angeles hospital in the late 1960s and 70s]. When the documentary was released, we went to screenings to talk about reproductive justice and this act of forced sterilization. Then three years ago, we started working with a coalition of folks to co-sponsor a bill, the Eugenics Sterilization Compensation Program, to compensate survivors ofeugenics.

We modeled our legislation after Virginia and North Carolina. Both have laws for compensation for survivors. The California legislature has not passed our bill yet, but we are very passionate about this issue. What does it mean to take away someones basic right to be a parent? The country is not going to take this kind of crime seriously until someone is forced to takeaccountability.

CL: Beyond legislative change, what can people do to help stopthis?

LJ: We need to become aware of what is happening. Share resources where you can learn what eugenics science looked like in the past and looks like now. Read the books Killing the Black Body (Dorothy Roberts) and Fertile Matters (Elena Gutirrez). A number of organizations are working on this, look at what they do. For this particular case, Project South has been leading. They filed the complaint and uncovered the information. The main thing is to learn about it if you dont know and teach otherpeople.

Ayana Byrd is a Philadelphia-based writer who covers reproductive justice and the intersection of racism and beautyculture.

Understanding the process of early human development in the womb – Tech Explorist

Current understandings of cell specification in early mammalian pre-implantation development are based mainly on mouse studies.

A new study by the University of Cambridge looks at biological pathways active in human embryos during their first few days of development. Through this study, scientists wanted to understand how cells acquire different fates and functions within the early embryo.

The study has shown that just after the fertilization, when cells start to divide- some cells start to stick together. This triggers a cascade of molecular events that start placental development. A subset of cells change shape, or polarise, which drives the change into a placental progenitor cell the precursor to a specific placenta cell that can be recognized by contrasts in genes proteins from different cells in the embryo.

Dr. Kathy Niakan, group leader of the Human Embryo and Stem Cell Laboratory at the Francis Crick Institute, said,This study highlights the critical importance of the placenta for healthy human development.

If the molecular mechanism we discovered for this first cell decision in humans is not appropriately established, this will have significant negative consequences for the development of the embryo and its ability to implant in the womb successfully.

Scientists additionally analyzed similar developmental pathways in mouse and cow embryos. They found that while the mechanisms of later stages of development vary between species, the placental progenitor is as yet the first cell to separate.

Claudia Gerri, the lead author of the study and postdoctoral training fellow in the Human Embryo and Stem Cell Laboratory at the Francis Crick Institute, said,Weve shown that one of the earliest cell decisions during development is widespread in mammals, and this will help form the basis of future developmental research. Next, we must further interrogate these pathways to identify biomarkers and facilitate healthy placental development in people, and also cows or other domestic animals.

During IVF, one of the most significant predictors of an embryo implanting in the womb is the appearance of placental progenitor cells under the microscope. If we could identify better markers of placental health or find ways to improve it, this could make a difference for people struggling to conceive.

Niakan said,Understanding the process of early human development in the womb could provide us with insights that may lead to improvements in IVF success rates in the future. It could also allow us to understand early placental dysfunctions that can pose a risk to human health later in pregnancy.

The research was led by scientists at the Francis Crick Institute in collaboration with colleagues at the Royal Veterinary College, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Universit de Nantes, and Bourn Hall Clinic. Kathy Niakan is the incoming Director of the University of Cambridges Centre for Trophoblast Research, and Chair of the Cambridge Strategic Research Initiative in Reproduction.

The Climate Crisis is Aging Fish, Amphibian and Reptile Populations – One Green Planet

Fish, amphibians, and reptiles are ectothermic animals, meaning their internal temperature is dependent on the environment. Due to climate change, rising global temperatures will increase the body temperatures of ectothermic animals, causing serious consequences for these species.

A study published in Global Change Biology shows the effect of climate change on the aging rates of fish, amphibians, and reptiles. An increase in temperature likely increases the growth rate of ectothermic animals and may also cause heat stress as a result of increased exposure to heatwaves.

Heat waves take animals out of their thermal preferences, to the point even of reaching their temperature tolerance limits. The longer and more frequent the heat waves, the greater their impact on the physiology of ectotherms, Germn Orizaola, the studys co-author and researcher at the Joint Institute for Biodiversity Research of the University of Oviedo, explained to SINC.

Higher growth rates will generate physiological imbalances in ectotherms, increasing, for example, oxidative damage to the proteins and DNA, which may also affect the telomeres, the repeated sections of non-coding DNA located at the ends of chromosomes, Orizaola continued. As telomeres protect DNA, the faster the telomeres are lost, the faster the cells degrade and the body ages. This clear link between climate change and aging is described for the first time in our article

Due to the shortening of telomeres, the life expectancy of ectotherms may likely decline and their ability to reproduce may be compromised. Other effects of climate change such as drought or flood will further decimate the reproduction and recovery capacity of populations that already faced with reduced lifespans. Furthermore, lost of ectotherms can affect the survival of species in the ecosystem.

The study is just one example of the mass species loss caused by the climate crisis.

Nearly 21,000 populations of almost 4,4000 species of mammals, fish, birds, reptiles, and amphibians around the world have declined an average of 68% between 1970 and 2016, according to the Living Planet Report 2020 released by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) this month. The report emphasizes human activity as a main cause for biodiversity loss and species decline.

Twilight Theory: Could Bella Actually Be Half-Werewolf? | CBR – CBR – Comic Book Resources

A new fan theory suggests that Bella Swan of The Twilight Saga is half-werewolf. But is there any evidence to back this up?

TheTwilight Sagafollows human teenager Bella Swan on her journey through the world of the supernatural lead by her vampire boyfriend, Edward Cullen. During her journey, she befriends Jacob Black, a potential love interest and childhood friend who just happens to be a werewolf. From the start, Bella seemed to be drawn to the world of the supernatural, and now, a new theorysuggestsshewasn't the generic human girl as previously believed because she'sactually half-werewolf.

The first piece of evidence posed in this theory is that vampire powers do not work correctly on Bella as they do other humans, which is a shared skill of the Quileute werewolves. Alice, Edward's adopted sister, has the special ability to see the future, but she is unable to see the future of the werewolves or those whose lives become intertwined with a werewolf. Even prior to her transformation into a vampire, Bella was able to mentally block vampire powers, with Edward being unable to read her thoughts.

When Bella became a vampire, it's revealed that she has the gift of a mental shield. She trains to use her powers to protect others, only lifting her shield in order to allow Edward to read her mind. While thetheory suggests that her unique powerful gift comes from her potential werewolf genes, the book's explanation of her gift being a human trait improved post-transformation makes more sense within the reality of the world.

The theory also claims that the reason Jacob is attracted to Bella and imprints on her child is because of the werewolf gene. The books present that one of the theories behind imprinting is potentially related to creating matches designed for successful werewolf reproduction. So, in theory, Jacob's attraction to Bella is based on the connection of werewolf genes. However, even in the books, the concept of reproduction as a core cause of imprinting is presented as an inconclusive idea that is actually disproven by Jacob imprinting on a half-vampire. Ultimately, the books explain Jacob's attraction to Bella as really his imprinting instincts drawing him closer to Renesmee.

Also, the theory wildly suggests that Bella was only able to conceive a hybrid child because she had the werewolf gene. However, this is incorrect within the lore of the world. Bella and Edward were not the only human/vampire couple with the ability to reproduce. Alice and Jasper meet a vampire-human hybrid named Nahuel and introduce him during the trial with the Volturi to prove the existence and relative safety of a hybrid. If the mother has to contain werewolf genes in order to procreate with a vampire, than Nahuel would not exist. Plus, during childbirth, Bella is nearly killed and Edward transforms her into a vampire to save her. He injects vampire venom directly into her heart and bites her in multiple places on her body to distribute the venom as quickly as possible. Vampire venom is especially poisonous to werewolves, which is why in the reality ofThe Twilight Saga, werewolf-vampire hybrids are impossible.
