Dr. Hambleton brings extensive clinical oncology drug development and regulatory expertise gained in leadership roles within both the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries.

Accent is developing an exciting pipeline of targeted therapies in this novel area of biology, said Dr. Hambleton. Im thrilled to be working with the board of directors and the Accent team to deliver life-changing therapies to patients.

Dr. Hambleton is a senior biotechnology executive with more than 20 years of experience in clinical drug development from pre-clinical through Phase 4 and post-marketing studies. She has extensive experience working with regulatory agencies, including the U.S. FDA and the European Medicines Agency (EMA), and in filings of Investigational New Drug Applications (INDs), Biologics License Applications (BLAs) and Special Protocol Assessments (SPAs). Dr. Hambleton currently serves as interim Chief Executive Officer at Arch Oncology. Previously, she served as Senior Vice President, Chief Medical Officer and Head of Development at IDEAYA Biosciences, an oncology medicine company, until April 2020. FAMUs College of Agriculture & Food Sciences has been granted two new grape patents. This is a huge accomplishment for the university and, more specifically, for the FAMU Center for Viticulture and Small Fruits Research.

The researchers at the center have named these two new strains of muscadine grape plants: the Floriana and Florida Onyx grape plants.

These are the two newest additions to the grape industry.Muscadine grapes originated in the southeastern region of the United States and are typically used in making artisan wines, juices and jelly.

Cypress Bend Vineyards wrote about the benefits of the muscadine grapes, stating that they are fat free, high in fiber and they are high in antioxidants, especially ellagic acid and resveratrol. Ellagic acid has demonstrated anticarcinogenic properties in the colon, lungs and liver of mice. Resveratrol is reported to lower cholesterol levels and the risk of coronary heart disease.

According to a press release issued by FAMU and the Viticulture Center, Floriana is described as a self-fertile wine grape vine that is highly productive, resistant to Pierces disease (PD) and low cases of the fruit ripening rot and able to produce fine red wines.

The most distinguished characteristics of Floriana is its high-quality wine, rich and stable red color, and consistent high yield.

Florida Onyx is described as a pistillate (female) grape vine that is highly productive, resistant to Pierces disease (PD), low fruit ripening rot and relatively low wet scar.

The most outstanding characteristics of Florida Onyx are its large, deep black-red colored berry with extremely pleasant fruit flavor.

According to famu.edu, the FAMU Center for Viticulture and Small Fruits Research was established by the Florida Legislature in 1978, making it the oldest specialized viticulture research program in the southeastern United States.

The center was established with Florida Senate Bill 898, identified as the Florida Viticulture Policy Act, to provide leadership, undertake research, extension and development activities that will contribute to industry growth and development.

Grapes are the second biggest fruit crop (by acreage) in the country and second in the world to bananas. Muscadine grapes and wines are produced in 12 states. How Much Sugar Is in Wine and Does It Even Matter? – The Kit

It was a wine kind of summer. Pandemic anxieties soothed by Lambrusco. Picnics made indulgent with sparkling ros. Tuesdays brightened by a cheeky glass of Gamay. I started to write about wine, too, and interviewed sommeliers, passing their wisdom to my friends, Oh, you should never leave the bottle in the ice bucket, Id say, newly enlightened. Crmant is every bit as good as Champagne. Wine brands even started to send me a few bottles.

One of them was Bask, a new line of three Ontario wines (a Sauvignon Blanc, a ros and a Pinot Noir). Basks big selling point: zero sugar per serving. Basks bottles also feature a nutrition label, a relatively novel thing for wine, and a reaction, no doubt, to our increasing embrace of all things wellness-adjacent and virtuously healthful. In a press release, Bask is described as something that can be enjoyed without undue compromise.

But is it really that simple? Just mind the sugar and finish the bottleguilt-free.

Ick! is what author and plant-based dietitian Desiree Nielsen had to say about the concept of guilt-free consumption. It deserves its own column, she adds.

Sugar really isnt a big issue when enjoying wine, says Nielsen. After all, alcohol is created when yeast eats sugar during fermentation. Nielsen points out that most wines on store shelves classify as drycontaining less than 10 grams of sugar per litre. To put this in perspective, a quarter cup of actual grapes has six grams of sugar.

The one or two grams of sugar that separate a typical dry wine from one thats touted as zero-sugar are simply too negligible to be anything more than a marketing tool for wine brands. Plus, any wine that naturally contains less than half a gram can call itself zero-sugarjust like any brand can call itself clean without having to do much to back up this claim (Cameron Diazs recently launched wine comes to mind). Beyond these, some low-quality wines will have added sugar to smooth and balance out flavour or to help with viscosity (so that they dont taste thin). And its worth noting that dessert wines like Riesling or ice wine will have more sugar content by their very nature.

Aside from sugar, what will have a big impact is the alcohol itself. This is basic, and Nielsen believes that getting overly concerned with calories or grams of sugar distracts from the fact that we shouldnt be drinking a lot of alcohol. Alcohol, after all, can mess with your blood sugar and might stimulate you to eat more than you normally would, among a host of other health concerns.

Thomas Masmejean, owner of Toronto bar Ottos Bierhalle and a new, direct-to-consumer natural wine shop,Grape Crush, puts it bluntly: How good is alcohol for you, really? Masmejean grew up in France and wanted to bring greater accessibility to the citys wine scene. He imports hard-to-find bottles from small producers with sustainable, low-intervention and organic farming practices. So far, the demand is far exceeding his pandemic expectations. If youre going to drink a whole bottle, he says, go natural.

Were curious about what we put in our bodies and want transparency. It makes sense that wine is evolving

Natural wine is a deliberate move away from old-school, stuffy wine buying (picture monotone mahogany shelves of the vintages section) and it conveniently intersects with our embrace of wellness and self-care culture. It also helps that the labels on natural wine bottles tend to be cute. Were curious about what we put in our bodies and want transparency, reasons Nielsen. It makes sense that wine is evolving. People with sulphite sensitivity are going to need sulphite-free wines; vegans need wines without animal byproducts. If organic agriculture is important to you, youll want to support organic wines.

Masmejean points out that not all organic wines are labelled as such because the certification can be time consuming and costlyespecially for small mom-and-pop producers. He says his buyers get into natural wines for two reasons, Because its a trendthey might want to discover something a bit more funky or different. Or those that want the taste of classic wine thats pure and you know exactly whats in it. A standard nutrition label may not be the worst idea, but it wont tell you where the grapes came from or what additives are were used.

The health benefits of wine are a bit overblown

You cant discuss wine without getting into its oft-cited health benefits. Antioxidants! Anti-inflammatory properties! Nielsen bursts that Pt-Nat bubble. The health benefits are a bit overblown, she says. A single glass of wine has perhaps 0.3 milligrams of antioxidants per 100 millilitres. Research typically looks at 1- to 5-gram doses for benefit. Drinking enough wine for the antioxidants to kick in would bring about its own negative health effects.

And if there is any potential health benefits to wine, its in the phytochemical content such as resveratrol, says Nielsen. You wont find that information on any nutrition labels. And if its resveratrol youre after, which comes from the skin of red grapes and is the source of red wines good-for-the-heart reputation, it can be found in cocoa, berries, green tea and spices like turmeric.

Wine can absolutely fit into a healthy lifestyle, Nielsen assures me. But its misleading to conflate it with wellness cultureits not exactly green juice. Instead of obsessing over labels, Nielsen puts the focus on enjoying wine mindfully. Which, Im sorry to say, is just a fancy word for less.

Mapping primordial reaction networks

Chemists seeking to understand the origins of life have published a wide range of reactions that may have yielded the building blocks of proteins, nucleic acids, and lipids from simple precursors. Woos et al. scoured the literature to document each such reaction class and then wrote software that applied the reactions first to the simplest compounds such as cyanide, water, and ammonia, and then iteratively to each successive generation of products. The resulting network predicted a variety of previously unappreciated routes to biochemically relevant compounds, several of which the authors validated experimentally.

Although hundreds of organic reactions have been validated under consensus prebiotic conditions, we still have only a fragmentary understanding of how these individual steps combined into complete synthetic pathways to generate lifes building blocks, which other abiotic molecules might have also formed, how independent reactions gave rise to chemical systems, and how membranes encapsulating these systems came into being. Answering such questions requires consideration of very large numbers of possible synthetic pathways. Starting with even a few primordial substratese.g., H2O, N2, HCN, NH3, CH4, and H2Sthe number of prebiotically synthesizable molecules grows rapidly into the tens of thousands. Detailed analysis of this space and its synthetic connectivity may be beyond the cognition of individual chemists but can be performed by smart computer algorithms.

We harnessed the power of computer-assisted organic synthesis to map the network of molecules that are synthesizable from basic prebiotic feedstocks. This was done by encoding currently known prebiotic reactions in a machine-readable format, augmenting these reaction transforms with information about incompatible groups and reaction conditions, and then applying them iteratively to a set of basic prebiotic substrates. The reaction network thus created was queried by algorithms to identify complete synthetic routes as well as those tracing reaction systemsnotably, reaction cycles. All calculations were supported by a software application that is freely available to the scientific community.

We demonstrate that this network comprises more abiotic molecules than biotic molecules. The biotic compounds differ from the abiotic compounds in several ways: They are more hydrophilic, more thermodynamically stable, and more balanced in terms of the hydrogen bond donors and acceptors they contain and are synthesizable along routes with fewer changes of conditions. The network contains not only all known syntheses of biotic compounds but also previously unidentified routes, several of which (e.g., prebiotic syntheses of acetaldehyde and diglycine, as well as malic, fumaric, citric, and uric acids) we validated by experiment. We also demonstrate three notable forms of chemical emergence: (i) that the molecules created within the network can themselves enable new types of prebiotic reactions; (ii) that within just a few synthetic generations, simple chemical systems (including self-regenerating cycles) begin to emerge; and (iii) that the network contains prebiotic routes to surfactant species, thus outlining a path to biological compartmentalization. We support these conclusions with experimental results, establishing previously undescribed prebiotic reactions and entire reaction systemsnotably, a self-regenerating cycle of iminodiacetic acid.

Computer-generated reaction networks are useful in identifying synthetic routes to prebiotically relevant targets and are indispensable for the discovery of prebiotic chemical systems that are otherwise challenging to discern. As our network continues to grow by means of crowd-sourcing of newly validated prebiotic reactions, it will allow continued simulation of chemical genesis, beginning with molecules as simple as water, ammonia, and methane and leading to increasingly complex targets, including those of current interest in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries.

Computer simulation of plausible prebiotic reactions creates a network of molecules that are synthesizable from prebiotic feedstocks and establishes multiple unreportedbut now experimentally validatedsyntheses of prebiotic targets as well as self-regenerating cycles. In this schematic illustration, light blue nodes represent abiotic molecules, dark blue nodes represent molecules along newly discovered prebiotic syntheses of uric and citric acids, and red nodes represent other biotic molecules.

The challenge of prebiotic chemistry is to trace the syntheses of lifes key building blocks from a handful of primordial substrates. Here we report a forward-synthesis algorithm that generates a full network of prebiotic chemical reactions accessible from these substrates under generally accepted conditions. This network contains both reported and previously unidentified routes to biotic targets, as well as plausible syntheses of abiotic molecules. It also exhibits three forms of nontrivial chemical emergence, as the molecules within the network can act as catalysts of downstream reaction types; form functional chemical systems, including self-regenerating cycles; and produce surfactants relevant to primitive forms of biological compartmentalization. To support these claims, computer-predicted, prebiotic syntheses of several biotic molecules as well as a multistep, self-regenerative cycle of iminodiacetic acid were validated by experiment.

Larry C. Thompson – The Daily World

Dr. Larry Clark Thompson, 85, passed away peacefully with family at his side in Scarborough, Maine, on Sept. 15, 2020.

Larry (not Lawrence) was born June 13, 1935, in Hoquiam, Washington. The eldest of three brothers, he was raised in this hardworking mill town during the Great Depression and World War II, fostering in him a spirit of self-reliance and improvement. He stood out as a young man for his curiosity and tremendous intellect, as well as his athletic ability most notably as a champion pole vaulter in the days of the steel pole and sawdust landing pit. In hospice, he shared an image of himself vaulting through the air as a collegiate competitor with very good form.

Larry was salutatorian of his high school class and continued his exceptional academic achievement at Willamette University and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he trained as an inorganic chemist. After completing his Ph.D program in unprecedented record time, he joined the chemistry faculty at the University of Minnesota-Duluth (UMD). For the next 43 years, Professor Thompson was an outstanding friend, colleague, mentor, leader and teacher. He was a key part of the chemistry Master of Science degree program, established in 1964, and taught general chemistry and physical chemistry, as well as inorganic chemistry courses.

During his career, Professor Thompson became known internationally as an expert in the coordination chemistry and spectroscopy of rare Earth elements and spent significant time collaborating with lanthanide researchers around the world, most notably his Brazilian colleagues, and published numerous research papers. Besides his students and colleagues, he was also proud of his state-of-the-art high-resolution McPherson RS-10 fluorescence spectrophotometer. He made significant leadership contributions to both UMD and the Chemistry Department during a time of tremendous growth, including service in the capacity of department head for 13 years.

He was revered by his students and colleagues for the rigor of his courses, his enrapturing chemistry stories and his generous mentorship. Larry was especially committed to supporting those from modest circumstances and helped many students realize their potential to become scientists, doctors, and engineers. For his hard work and brilliance as a scholar and teacher, he received the Sabra S. & Dennis L. Anderson Scholar/Teacher Award. After his retirement from the University of Minnesota, Larry surprised his family with his appointment as Chair of the Physical and Chemistry Department at the University of New England (UNE).

Larry met Frances Dressel at an early age and, after marrying in 1955, they had two daughters who were the apples of his eye. The collaboration with his Brazilian colleagues brought his young family to live in South America for extended periods and is something his daughters fondly remember as the experience of a lifetime. The Brazilian chemists he collaborated with and taught in So Paulo and Recife considered him to be a true education ambassador, and many of these colleagues became lifelong friends. Incidentally (as he would famously say), the Ford Foundation helped sponsor his first visiting professorship and indicated that he would be able to teach in English. When he arrived and discovered that students did not have the expected English skills, he drew on past Latin experience to learn Portuguese in short order so he could successfully deliver his lectures.

After retiring from the University of Minnesota, Larry found great happiness in a second chapter with his devoted wife, Dr. Hongming Wang. Their love grew from a deep friendship built over the course of decades and their shared profession; they had chemistry. Larry and Hongming traveled the world together Brazil many times, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia and Larry charmed strangers across continents with his signature meandering stories. Friends and family will remember him as someone who delighted in lifes many serendipitous coincidences, as an exceptionally intelligent person who cared deeply about the world, and as a man of integrity decent, fair and good to the core. He had a serious Scandinavian exterior that surrounded both a clever wit and a tender heart. Faculty and students from chemistry departments at the University of Minnesota, the University of New England, in Brazil, and beyond remember a thoughtful colleague and professor who made important contributions to his field.

A natural storyteller and teacher both in and outside of the classroom, Larry regularly challenged those around him to expand their minds. Many undergraduate and graduate students were mentored in his research lab and he was a generous and knowledgeable advisor. His faculty colleagues remember the animated discussions with Larry about the state of education. One of his famous annoyances was with modern textbook publishers who claimed that their texts make learning chemistry easy. It was Larrys unyielding assertion that learning is never easy it requires effort and hard work. A bit of a Renaissance man, Larry found something of interest and wonder everywhere. He pursued many activities such as fly fishing, volleyball, reading mystery novels, and an appreciation for classical music listening to Beethovens symphonies in the chemistry lab and during his final days. Larry also did extensive research on his family history and created an archive to pass along to future generations. Surprisingly, later in life he became quite a clothes enthusiast and enjoyed outfitting Hickey Freeman customers in fine business attire.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Elizabeth and Bert Lanphere and Lester Thompson, and the mother of his children, Frances Dressel Thompson. Proudly carrying on are his beloved wife Dr. Hongming Wang; daughters and stepdaughter Martha Thompson (Mike Taylor), Whitney (Rich) Crettol, and Jin (Nick) Valaperta; eight grandchildren; younger brothers Melvin and Dennis Thompson and their families, and a half sister Connie Egstad. He was a devoted husband and father, and an adoring grandfather whose love and patience knew no bounds. His family cherishes many fond memories and misses him dearly.

For Penn State, Another Preseason Project: Building Team Chemistry – Sports Illustrated

Penn State coach James Franklin wanted to invite the team's freshmen to his house for dinner, as he has done countless times in the past. Only this time, he was forced to ask the team's training staff trainers for virus-prevention guidelines.

By the time they delivered the list of requirements (boxed food only, distance the players, etc.), Franklin sighed.

"It didn't sound like a whole lot of fun," he said.

As if they didn't have enough concerns about keeping their players healthy and virus-free, college football coaches are finding something else to worry about: How do they rebuild team chemistry in the COVID-19 era?

Penn State restarts training camp Sept. 30 on its way to its Oct. 24 opener at Indiana and has plenty to accomplish. In addition to putting on the pads for the first time in nine months and installing their new offense, the Lions have to conduct some team-building exercises, too.

Sure, Penn State has done that through video calls since March, and the players have been training together since early June. But they haven't hit each other, or anyone else, since the Cotton Bowl. And they really haven't spent much time together as a full team.

That's one reason Franklin called team-building a priority of the next month.

"That's probably the thing I am most concerned about, is the chemistry stuff," Franklin said. "Usually, I'll have guys over to my house a lot. Whether it's in the house watching games and eating, whether it's taking them to [the sports restaurant] Champs or whether it's taking to the bowling alley and just having some fun."

Franklin has made team-building exercises (movies, bowling, etc.) frequent one-day breaks of his August training camps. When players began returning for voluntary workouts, they moved toward chemistry building on their own.

"It's important for us all to be back among each other so we can see each other's faces again," running back Noah Cain said recently. "So when it's time to come back to camp, our faces aren't foreign and we are used to each other's vibe and chemistry."

With preventive measures in place, however, Franklin has to get more creative with his team-building.

"How is it not just football, football, football and school, without some of the fun things that we all do as coaches to build that chemistry that's important?" Franklin asked.

Tri-Town gets grant to remove ‘forever chemical’ – The Patriot Ledger

The money will be used to design ways to remove a group of chemicals from the drinking water of Braintree, Randolph and Holbrook.

BRAINTREE The Tri-Town Water District has received a $200,000 grant from the state to reduce the levels of a "forever chemical" in the water system.

The state has also announced new regulations that will require regular testing of drinking water for a group of chemicals known as PFAS starting next year, and also sets a state limit for the levels of those chemicals. There is no federal standard.

Gov. Charlie Baker said the state is committed to making sure all residents have access to safe and clean drinking water.

"By setting stringent standards for PFAS in drinking water, we can ensure that all public water systems across the commonwealth are testing for these emerging contaminants, while providing them the tools and resources they need to address any contamination," Baker said in a statement.

PFAS is an acronym for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, a group of man-made chemicals which have been used in a variety of applications since the 1950s, from nonstick cookware and water-resistant clothing to food packaging materials and firefighting foam. They are considered a "forever chemical" because they don't break down and can accumulate in the body. They have been linked to a number of negative health impacts, from weakening the immune system of children, increasing cholesterol levels and causing tumors. They have also been shown to be a health risk for pregnant and nursing mothers.

Braintree Mayor Charles Kokoros, who is chairman of the Tri-Town Water Board, said the money will be used for the engineering and design work needed for PFAS removal at the proposed regional water plant at Great Pond. The plant will serve the town as well as Randolph and Holbrook, the other tri-town members. The regional plant will replace two outdated treatment plants, one for Braintree and one which serves Randolph and Holbrook.

PFAS were discovered in Braintree's drinking water last year as part of the design process for the new water treatment plant. Braintree officials made changes that brought down the PFAS level in the town's drinking water from 24.5 parts per trillion last fall to 21 parts per trillion in January. In April, the town council approved spending $693,020 to install granular activated carbon in the treatment plant's filter system to further reduce the levels.

The new state limit will be 20 parts per trillion and water systems will be required to take corrective action when the limit is exceeded. Testing for PFAS will be required starting in January for large water systems and public notices will be required when the limit is exceeded.

A total of $1.9 million in grants were awarded to 10 water systems by the state.

Solar cell concept used to enhance nuclear battery – Chemistry World

Researchers in South Korea and the US have borrowed a strategy traditionally used in photovoltaic devices to enhance a battery concept that generates an electric current from beta particles. The team behind the work say it is a step towards making long-lasting batteries for very small devices.

Betavoltaic cells use a radioactive isotope, in this case carbon-14, to generate beta radiation. Ordinarily such devices contain a semiconductor that absorbs the radiation to generate electrons. Now, a team led by Su-Il In from the Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology has replaced the semiconductor with a titanium dioxide electrode coated with a ruthenium-based dye. The cell reported by Ins team uses a beta-emitting carbon-14 quantum dot layer on the counter electrode, and uses a dye-coated electrode as the anode.

Dye coatings, also known as dye sensitisation, often feature in photovoltaic cells. In the presence of light, the dye absorbs approaching photons and generates electrons in response.

In the new betavoltaic cell, energy provided by beta radiation causes charge transfer from the dyes ruthenium metal ions to its ligand, and that leads to electron-transfer to the titanium dioxide anode. I think that merging old and new technology to solve the problems with beta batteries will be useful for our future, says In.

The dye-sensitised device performed much better than the device without any dye its power density was around 32,000 times greater. Additionally, In says using a dye instead of an expensive and complicated process using a semiconductor, reduces the manufacturing cost by roughly 30%.

The dual role of the carbon-14 quantum dot layer as both the radioactive excitation source and the counter electrode is particularly innovative, comments Yana Vaynzof, an expert in photovoltaic cell technology from the Technical University of Dresden, Germany.

Vaynzof adds that significant hurdles remain to be overcome, both in increasing the efficiency of the device and equally importantly, its stability. The cells efficiency is currently 0.48%, which is not yet high enough for widespread commercialisation.

Ins team aim to improve the efficiency of the dye-sensitised betavoltaic cell in their future research, and In says the technology could ultimately be used to construct self-sustaining battery cells that require little to no charging.
