Grey’s Anatomy Star Ellen Pompeo on Baby2Baby, the Pandemic and Power of Empathy – WWD

Ellen Pompeo, Greys Anatomy star, actress and producer, spent her Friday afternoon at a charitable Halloween drive-thru with Baby2Baby the Los Angeles-based organization that provides children living in poverty with basic needs.

Its been devastating to watch, Pompeo said of the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. Its really been interesting to see what a lack of empathy there is out there, considering its one of the most challenging times weve faced as a planetWhy is a lack of empathy something to be celebrated? Why does a lack of empathy make you tough? Caring and having empathy is a sign of strength, not a weakness.

With over 8 million Instagram followers, Pompeo has been using her platform to highlight social causes, movements health equity and Black Lives Matter and the significance of wearing a face mask during the health crisis.

Im super fortunate, she went on, when asked how shes been adapting to the year. I cant complain at all about my life. But I think about younger kids. My 6-year-old couldnt start kindergarten properly this year. The kids who graduated high school couldnt start college this year. The theater actors in New York City, the restaurant workers, the health-care workers, so many people have been really affected by this.

With Baby2Baby, Pompeo has been able to see a local impact of giving back.

Theyre such hard workers, she said of Baby2Baby chief executive officers Kelly Sawyer Patricof and Norah Weinstein. Theyre really smart women and know what theyre doing. Theyre really good at it. You see at their events, how successful they are, how many people turn out. You can actually see the work being put to use.

Every year, Baby2Baby raises millions of dollars at an annual gala in L.A. Last year, the nonprofit collected $4.7 million at the event, bringing out the likes of Katy Perry, Kelly Rowland, the late Kobe Bryant with wife Vanessa, Jennifer Garner, Kate Hudson, Jessica Alba, Gwyneth Paltrow, Chrissy Teigen and her husband John Legend. This year the party was canceled due to the pandemic, but that hasnt stopped Patricof and Weinstein from hosting smaller charitable events throughout the year.

They never stop raising money, asking for money, volunteers, continued Pompeo of the women. Its really impressive. Ive seen this organization grow and grow. Their events are consistent. Their giving is consistent, and their work is consistent.

Pompeo, along with other volunteers, handed out school supplies and backpacks along with costumes and candy for Halloween on Friday, thanks to Paul Mitchell a lead sponsor for the organization for the last five years.

They gave a lot of money, over $300,000, to buy all of the supplies, Pompeo said of the professional hair-care company. Without huge donations like that, these events never go on.

Its awkward to go through the logistics of everything, but once they pull up, all of that goes away, said Michaeline DeJoria, vice chairman of John Paul Mitchell Systems and an executive board member of Baby2Baby, of the drive-thru concept. You just look into each others eyes, and youre handing them something, and theyre so grateful. Whether youre in masks, separated by cars, whatever the protocol is, that moment just doesnt change. All the stuff around it looks different, but the vibe was still the same. Its still as heartwarming and humbling as ever.

The mission this year has been accelerated to meet the needs of kids and families, she continued.

Whats so doubly sad about COVID-19 hitting is the essential needs that were there were already so overwhelming, and now to compound that onto COVID-19, a lot of the parents were barely making by, so many have lost jobs or were furloughed, said DeJoria. Early on, we had to pivot toward specific COVID-19 needs like sanitizer. That was really major. And one of the things that was really heartbreaking was a lot of parents, because of loss of income, jobs, access to these basic needs, a lot of them have resorted to making homemade diapers out of newspapers and towels or watering down baby formula. So, those essential needs of food and diapers have really and of course the sanitizers and self-care items like hair care and all that, which we were happy to donate along with the sanitizer the need for that just ramped up so much that the focus really pivoted toward outputting more of those items, especially early on.

Baby2Baby is currently unable to accept physical donations due to the pandemic, but the best way to get involved is monetary donations at baby2baby.org, said Pompeo.

No matter how small [the amount], she said, theyre always grateful, and they put it to good use.

City Optometry academics’ ongoing contribution to Gray’s Anatomy – City, University of London

Academics from the Division of Optometry and Visual Sciences have been writing the ocular chapters of the world famous Grays Anatomy for thirty years.

For the last thirty years optometry academics at City have edited the eye and orbit chapters of the world famous medical textbook, Grays Anatomy, which was published in its 42nd edition last week.

For the last fifteen years, the responsibility of editing these chapters has fallen to John Lawrenson,Professor of Clinical Visual Science and Ron Douglas Professor of Visual Science, both from the School of Health Sciences. They follow in the footsteps of their colleague, the late Gordon Ruskell, a classical anatomist who had been Professor of Ocular Anatomy at City.

Professor Ruskell made many fundamental discoveries in the field of ocular innervation, and educated optometrists at the university for almost 40 years. Not surprisingly, he became one of the section editors of Grays Anatomy and the author of two chapters on the eye and visual system for editions in the 1990s.

Professor Lawrenson and Professor Douglas became subsequent contributors and rewrote and updated Professor Ruskells original chapters for the 150th Anniversary edition (the 40th) of Grays Anatomy in 2008, including many of Ruskells unpublished drawings and microscopic images, generated from the microscope slide collection at City that has been used to teach generations of optometry students.

Anatomy; descriptive and surgical with text and dissections by Henry Gray and illustrations by Henry Vandyke Carter was first published as a relatively slim volume in 1858 and was an immediate bestseller. It has been known, if not always loved, to generations of medical students throughout the world as simply Grays Anatomy and has never been out of print in either the UK or America since its initial publication. Arguably, it is the most successful and influential textbook ever written.

Gray died at the age of only 34 of smallpox just after the second edition was published in 1861.However, such was the popularity of the book that it continued to flourish and has been rewritten on numerous occasions and now covers over 1,600 pages. The most recent editions contain none of the original authors drawings or text. Gray and Carter would be astonished by the changes in their book with the inclusion, for example, of many in vivo images created by the new generation of scanning techniques and its availability as an ebook.

Commenting on their work on the latest edition of Grays Anatomy, Professor Ron Douglas said:

In this edition we were asked to highlight variation. Students love certainty and want to be told that something is a certain way.Sadly, life is rarely that simple.Biology is endlessly variable and the eye is no exception.You could probably identify your partner from their eyes alone, due to their unique external characteristics.Internally, the eye is equally variable.

The contributions from Professor Lawrenson and Professor Douglas can be seen in chapters 44 and 45 of the 42nd, and latest edition of this classic book.

The sole function of the clitoris is female orgasm. Is that why its ignored by medical science? – The Guardian

Professor Caroline de Costa is awaiting feedback. Several months ago the editor of the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology requested an editorial from a world-renowned Melbourne urologist to address what she saw as a lack of research and, more concerningly, a persistent lack of knowledge about an essential part of the female reproductive system.

The urologist, Professor Helen OConnell, agreed. But a week after the editorial was published, De Costas inbox remains suspiciously silent. She suspects her colleagues, used though they are to dispassionate discussion of female genitalia, may be too embarrassed to write in.

The editorial was about the clitoris, an organ whose sole function is the female orgasm. And an alarming number of medical professionals remain uncomfortable discussing it.

It is not discussed, says De Costa, who is also a professor of obstetrics and gynaecology at James Cook University. I go to conferences, I go to workshops, I edit the journal, I read other journals. I read papers all the time, and never do I find mention of the clitoris.

The first comprehensive anatomical study of the clitoris was led by OConnell and published in 1998. A subsequent study in 2005 examined it under MRI. It was not, OConnell discovered, just a small nub of erectile tissue, described in some texts as the poor homologue of the penis. Instead it was an otherworldly shape, with the nerve-rich glans merely the external protrusion of an organ that extended beneath the pubic bone and wrapped around the vaginal opening, with bulbs that become engorged when aroused. It looked like an orchid. It was beautiful.

In the 20 years since that groundbreaking study was released, clitoral anatomy remains largely absent from the medical curriculum and from medical research. A literature review conducted by OConnells team for her editorial in the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology found just 11 articles on anatomical dissection of the clitoris had been published worldwide since 1947. Hundreds more mentioned clitoral anatomy only as it related to procedures to restore sensation following a cliteradectomy, or female genital mutilation. Despite that work, OConnell wrote, we see literature doubting the importance of female orgasm, entertaining the argument that from an evolutionary standpoint, female orgasm could merely be a byproduct of selection on male orgasm.

Speaking to Guardian Australia from her consulting rooms in East Melbourne, OConnell says the view that the clitoris was at best unimportant and at worst shameful remained pervasive. She recalls a conversation at an awards night, in which one of her students won a prize for a study of the suspensory ligaments that hold the clitoris in place.

The very senior figure directly across from me thought that her work was and I was her supervisor, I dont think he knew that he thought it was voyeurism, she says.

Shes doing scientific research about anatomy, and that, in his world

She pauses. What happened to him, that he sees a young woman doing a project like that and thinks of it with a sexual innuendo? That is just, to me, unfathomably unrelated to the way my brain works.

When OConnell was a medical student in the 1980s she was infuriated by her anatomy textbooks, which contained extensive anatomical drawings of the penis and registered the clitoris as a footnote.

Theres the norm thats the male, and then weve got kind of this subset over here who are not male, she says. And their unique characteristics are differences there was a feeling that they were not whole people in the way that these other people are whole people and deserving of having their body parts having a full description.

When she specialised in urology, she noticed that while attention was paid in prostate removal surgery to not harming the nerves that connected to penile erectile tissue, based on studies that were first conducted in the 1970s, there had been no similar work tracking clitoral nerves. She undertook a study on 12 cadavers following the nerves from the spinal column. It was pretty clear that what we were looking at was kind of a shadow of an organ rather than the organ itself, she says.

OConnell then enrolled in a doctorate to study clitoral anatomy.

I think the chances of a male realising there was a deficit when most of my female colleagues didnt see it would have to be incredibly unlikely, she says. I think I was raised a little bit rebelliously.

She is now able to describe the shape of the clitoris with the help of a 3D printed model that was designed in conjunction with Dr Ea Mulligan, a doctor from Adelaide who has made the manufacture and distribution of thousands of anatomically correct clitorises a retirement hobby. Mulligan distributes them at conferences and public health seminars, and is planning to set up a stall distributing free clitorises at Feast, Adelaides queer arts and culture festival, in November.

Its just a beautiful case study on the invisibility of womens concerns in science, in medicine

When I speak to her on the phone at her home in Adelaide, she offers to send me one of the three boxes, with 200 clitorises apiece, that is currently sitting on her back porch. A box has been sent to OConnell, a box to De Costa, and a box to the professor of anatomy at a medical school in Dunedin, New Zealand, who was previously working with a pathology sample of a clitoris that looks like a shred off of last weeks roast.

A lot of medical students and doctors I have handed them to have said Oh I didnt know it was as big as that, because its been diminished in the medical literature, Mulligan says. Its just a beautiful case study on the invisibility of womens concerns in science, in medicine.

When Mulligan studied medicine in the 1970s, she was working from an anatomy textbook that had one page on vulvar anatomy and five pages of penises from every possible angle.

It is only marginally better now. James Cook university, where de Costa teaches, holds a one-hour lecture in fifth year about the role of clitoris in sexual function. The curriculum to be a fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists covers sexual function and related disorders, but not specifically the function of the clitoris. The college said it encourages self-directed learning and acknowledges a long history of poor understanding of female anatomy and female sexuality.

RANZCOG supports all efforts to improve knowledge of genitourinary anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology, with the aim of best practice in womens health, the college said in a statement.

Back in her consulting rooms, OConnell appears remarkably fresh for someone who was in a mortuary until 1am the night before. She was conducting a dissection to map the anatomy of the urethra as part of a global effort to combat female urethral cancer, she tells Guardian Australia.

With her neat glasses and dry, technical language, OConnell does not appear the rebel. But then she talks, quite calmly, about subjects that would make many of her peers blush, and the rebel slips out.

Take orgasms. In 2016, OConnell co-authored a paper that found, based on a series of macroscopic anatomical dissections, that there was no evidence of erectile tissue in the vaginal wall in other words, that the G-spot did not exist. (OConnell has stressed there was more work to be done on the subject, including mapping the urethra.) To date, the only known erectile tissue in the area is the clitoris, leading to the working theory that the G-spot is just the engorged bulbs of an aroused clitoris felt through the vaginal wall.

Importantly, that meant that the clitoris would have to be stimulated for that sensation to be felt. This is not a new fact to people with vagin
as, but distributing it is an important part of ensuring they have healthy, satisfying sex lives.

That the majority of women and people with vaginas require clitoral stimulation to orgasm is just a statement of fact, OConnell says. Ignoring the clitoris and acting like thats not the focus for orgasm is just not going to happen.

She speculates after specifying that she is not speaking as a urologist that centuries of sexism, fed by unrealistic depictions of sex in Hollywood, have helped build the G-spot myth and minimise the role of the clitoris. And that encourages people to go about things in a way that is likely to be counterproductive.

People want kind of a magical thing, where he gets off through penetration of the vagina and exactly what causes his joy causes her joy, she says. Almost everyone is going to fall short on the goal because the organs just dont seem to be designed in this magical way that would fit with the kind of thrusting behaviour causing an orgasm.

Outside of medical circles, OConnells research has been enthusiastically embraced. US-based artist Sophia Wallace created a campaign on cliteracy, informing women about their own anatomy.

Wallaces art brings an organ with a dark history into the light, OConnell says, adding: Its cool, isnt it? She is unabashedly delighted by unintentionally sparking a feminist art movement. Its fantastic! she says. Who would ever have imagined something like that happening?

Artists, says De Costa, have undeniably done a better job at incorporating clitorial anatomy into their work than the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.

Alli Sebastian Wolf, a Sydney based artist, created 100-1 scale anatomically correct gold clitoris, called the Glitoris, in 2017.

I was in my mid-20s when I saw what a clitoris actually looked like and was kind of, first of all amazed by how wonderful it is, and second of all: how the fuck have we not been shown this or taught this? When I knew well before puberty what a fallopian tube and uterus shape was. Which, you know, far less important to my daily life, she says.

The Glitoris can be hung in a gallery but achieved viral fame when Sebastian Wolf took it to the Womens March, Mardi Gras and other public events, accompanied by the Cliterati Sebastian Wolf and friends in gold unitards and blue wigs.

A lot of people just thought it was a golden-y squid creature, a lot of people thought it was lungs, or a dragonfly, or testicles, she says. I met a couple of OB-GYNs who hadnt known about it until the sculpture, which is horrifying.

Sebastian Wolf says it can be easier for some people to talk about sex and sexual organs at a festival to a woman covered in glitter, than to their doctor. She is currently working on a one-storey high inflatable gold clitoris, but says she hopes knowledge of the clitoris will soon become so uncontroversial that making art about them would be as pass as making art about penises.

It will hopefully get to the point where my art is totally irrelevant, she says. It would be great if the most interesting thing about it is if people were like Oh, how did you get all those sequins on? Not, Whats this and why dont we know about it?

OConnells aim is similarly modest: that female anatomy be considered equally alongside male anatomy. And that necessarily means overcoming an institutional and societal prejudice against women enjoying their own sexuality. It means studying the clitoris.

‘Grey’s Anatomy’: Teddy and Owen Naming Their Daughter Allison Will Always Feel Wrong – Showbiz Cheat Sheet

On Greys Anatomy, it seems like everyones having kids. Season 16 kicked off with three pregnancies, two of which resulted in (as far as we know) healthy tiny humans by the end of the season finale.

Teddy Altman (Kim Raver) and Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) name their beautiful daughter after Teddys best friend and lover, Allison Robin Brown (Sherri Saum). Owen agrees to the name because he refers to Allison as Teddys best friend, unaware that they were involved in a romantic relationship.

Naming their daughter Allison is weird and a bit insensitive. If Owen knew the whole story behind their daughters naming, he would be devastated. Teddy is unwilling to let go of her past lovers memories, and naming her child after her is proof.

While Teddy was working at Columbia University Medical Center, Allison almost hit her with a bike. Teddy was so angry, and she even yelled at Allison, who responded calmly and bought her a bagel. A friendship formed, and a few days, they were inseparable.

Allison lived with her girlfriend, Claire, and best friend Teddy in New York. The relationship between Allison and Teddy was complicated, as both wanted something more than mere friendship. Allison started having an affair with Teddy while she was still dating Claire.

The two hooked up until the unfortunate death of Allison on September 11, 2001. Allison met her untimely death in the South Tower of the World Trade Center, where she was working. Before her death, she tried to call Teddy numerous times.

Greys Anatomy episode Love of My Life reveals Teddys past and the fact that she was dating a woman. However, Teddy is reluctant to refer to herself as bisexual, and to her, love is love.

In the episode, Teddy, together with Dr. Hayes and Maggie, travel to Los Angeles for a surgical conference. Teddy bumps into Claire, and they start talking about Allison.

She apologizes to Claire for having an affair with Allison behind her back. Teddy admits that Allison loved both of them equally. She further admits it is the reason she named her daughter after the love of her life. She is still guilty of not loving Owen enough and having an affair with Tom Koracick.

Allison proved to Teddy that love could be divided between two people in 2001; she managed to love and care for Claire and Teddy. In 2020, Teddy finds herself in the same dilemma she is dating both Owen and Tom.

However, before Allisons death, she wanted to come clean about her affair with Claire but never got a chance. Teddy naming her child after Allison is a way to keep her memories alive, and Teddy might only achieve that if she tells Owen the whole truth about the naming of their daughter and affair with Tom.

Even though some fans on Reddit arent sure how they feel about Teddy and Owen naming their child after Teddys former lover, it can be seen to some as a heartwarming gesture to honor a lost friend.

Retrotrigonal muscular layer sling associated with total anatomical reconstruction in robot-assisted radical prostatectomy and early continence. -…

Urinary continence (UC) represents the main non-oncological goal in patients undergoing robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP). To evaluate the efficacy in early UC achievement, we described a new sling technique using the retrotrigonal muscular layer (TZ sling) combined with total anatomical reconstruction (TAR).

We prospectively enrolled 407 consecutive prostate cancer (PC) patients undergoing RARP between May 2017 and January 2020. The first 250 patients underwent only TAR, while the following 157 patients TAR+TZ sling, by isolating and anchoring the retrotrigonal muscular layer to the pubic bone with 2 bilateral sutures. We defined UC as1 pad/die, which was assessed after catheter removal at 1, 4 and 12wk using the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire-Short Form (ICIQ-SF) score. Sling-related operative time and post-operative complications were analyzed.

In the TAR group, the UC rates at the 1, 4 and 12wk were 58%, 66% and 86%; in the TAR+TZ sling group 72%, 76% and 88%, respectively. A statistically significant difference was observed in the two groups at 1wk (p=0.0049) and 4wk (p=0.035) favoring the TZ sling surgical strategy. This difference in UC rates was lost at 12wk (p0.05). No statistically significant differences in operative time, acute urinary retentions and other complication rates were observed between the two groups (p=NS).

We have described a new, safe, feasible modification of RARP using a sling with the retrotrigonal muscular layer associated with TAR. We have demonstrated a statistically significant improvement in early UC rate in patients who are undergoing TAR and TZ sling compared to undergoing only TAR.

Dr. April Kepner, played by the actress Sarah Drew, first appeared on Greys Anatomy in 2009, and for nearly ten years, she was a staple presence on the show. In the early years of Aprils residency at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, she was not exactly a fan-favorite in fact, many viewers took issue with the way that she addressed other doctors and staff.

Still, critics were united in their praise of Sarah Drews performance, and of the way that she was able to portray intensely emotional situations. One of the most dramatic storylines that involved Dr. April Kepner was the one where she becomes pregnant with a baby, whom she named Samuel, who has a terminal birth defect.

Rather than abort the pregnancy, April chooses to give birth to the baby at 24 weeks gestation. The baby ultimately lives only a few hours before he passes away, marking Aprils story with a touch of tragedy in the years that followed.

Another character who had more than one brush with tragedy with Amelia Shepherd, played by the actress Caterina Scorsone. Amelias most disturbing and emotionally affecting storyline was one involving her pregnancy.

In the show, it is discovered that Amelias unborn baby had no brain, leaving her with the terrible choice of what to do ultimately, she donated her unborn babys organs to science.

Fans on Reddit recently discussed the similarities between Amelia Shepherd and April Kepner.

The original poster on the thread posed a question, asking what moments fans would choose to have inserted in the show. One poster was quick to state I would also have loved for April to be able to talk to Amelia about Samuel.

Another fan agreed, stating a scene with Amelia and Jackson talking about losing Samuel and Christopher (Amelias baby)- I think these two dont have a lot of scenes together and it would be interesting for them to bond over something considering they both went through similar loss but from different sides of it.

Although April Kepner has been written off the show since 2018, it is always possible that she could rejoin the cast, making way for this very intriguing and likely very emotional conversation.

A nutritionist who made a bizarre claim about the female anatomy has been shut down by doctors.

Colleen Christensen, who posts under the Instagram handle No Food Rules, shared a "mind-blowing" statement with her 156,000 followers on October 22.

It read: "That bump at the bottom of your stomach is your uterus."

The US dietitian wrote about how she was "so frustrated" she couldn't get a flat stomach.

"Like what was that bump and why wouldn't it go in," she said alongside a snap of herself holding her tummy with excitement.

It wasn't until a girlfriend pointed out on social media "that bump is organs".

"So, that bump? It SHOULD be there and it isn't wrong," she wrote.

"A girlfriend posted this in the SociEATy recently and I realised that there is SO many people who don't realise this!

"Our stomachs? They shouldn't necessarily be flat! That's your uterus (and fat and other organs obvi like intentioned, stomach, etc, let's not get too into anatomy here. Simply saying our tummies and pelvis house V important things) down there!"

"Welp, the answer is part of that bumps is organs."

However, people bombarded her post to tell her she was wrong, including medical experts.

"Fat is 100 per cent normal, but saying the bump is your uterus just simply isn't medically accurate," UK doctor Joshua Wolrich responded.

"I don't think it's getting 'too into anatomy' to point out that this simply isn't true," another follower demanded.

"Your uterus sits below the pubic bone until about 12 weeks' gestation, so the uterus itself does not make a bump unless you are pregnant.

"But there ARE other organs there and also fat that is intended to protect those organs so the bump is still absolutely normal," the follower continued.

A woman who said she was a gynaecologist, wrote: "Unless your uterus is enlarged somehow fibroids, post-partum, etc this isn't true," while a midwife told Colleen it was "belly fat".

The US nutritionists' post also attracted the likes of British comedian Sofie Hagen, who shared the post on Twitter, with a sarcastic caption.

"Hey, not to brag, but apparently I've got a pretty huuuuuuge uterus. You may now no longer call me fat. I am #UterusGifted," she said.

One woman replied: "It's definitely not her uterus. The bladder sits on top of your uterus, so it's just a load of wee she's holding in!"

Colleen, who referred to her friend's uterus claim as "mind-blowing" is yet to respond to the feedback.

Some, however, believed the claims writing: "Wait what. This explains SOOO much. It doesn't matter how many crunches, etc I do, it's always there. Well, now I know why!"

"The womb tilts slightly forwards too which increases the bump. Great post," another agreed.

In the earliest seasons, Bailey was introduced as the 'Nazi', a reference to the iron fist with which she ruled over the interns, whom she considered the bottom of the food chain.

Bailey was a committed doctor, and extremely good at her job but she was also a tough taskmaster and the interns feared and held her in awe at the same time. But despite her strict demeanor, she had a genuine desire to help people as was obvious from the free clinic she started in the hospital.

Miranda Bailey's personal life was revealed in these seasons as she struggled withone of the problems women have been facing for centuries--balancing family and ambition.

Miranda started developing frictions with her husband as she repeatedly missed out on family time as a result of the harrowing timings of her profession. Miranda made the smart decisionand opted for divorce as her husband was unable to support her in her choice of career.

In seasons 5 and 6, Miranda Bailey, who was now less of a Nazi, and had been shown to have a deeply caring side to her, suffered two counts of major trauma.

At the end of season 5, Miranda lost her favorite surgical resident, the adorable George O'Malley, to a shocking accident. And even as she struggled to get over it, the hospital became the siteof a devastating mass murder as a grieving husband of a dead patient decided to take it out on Chief Shepherd but killed several others in the process. Miranda showed extraordinary courage as she tried to single-handedly save the life of a surgical resident from Mercy West; it was also her quick-thinking that saved her own life and that of another of her patients even as the gunman came wielding his weapon.

Miranda took a break from work to recover from the trauma of the shooting and came back stronger. She gradually began to put the incident behind her and move on.

The shooting incident further proved that the 'Nazi' had a humane side to her, as she was genuinely upset at the loss of lives and relieved to see the others safe and sound. She also started a fling with the nurse Eli, after breaking up with Ben as she wasn't ready to get into a serious commitment at the moment.

Bailey broke up with Eli and decided to give herself a chance with Ben. She also felt conflicted when she realizes that her mentee Meredith Grey, who she had groomed herself, had causeda major ethical disaster by tampering with Derek Shepherd's Alzheimer's trial.

Her father-daughter relationship with Richard was affected as she could notaccept how he had taken on the blae for something that was clearly Meredith's fault. However, on the personal front, Miranda got further involved with Ben.

Season 9 was crucial for Miranda as she finally agreed to take a huge step and marry Ben. Even on the day of the wedding, she got called away toa life-saving surgical procedure but was happy to realize that Ben would support her all the way through.

She was also shaken up when she got embroiled in a major investigation by the Centre for Disease Control (CDC) following a disastrous reveal that the MRSA infection she carried, that was harmless for a healthy person, had caused the death of several of her patients who didn't have the same immunity. For someone like Bailey, who was committed to saving lives, this incident came as a huge shocker.

In the aftermath of the CDC investigation, Bailey started developing signs of an obsessive-compulsive disorder. However, she managed to get past that and seek treatment for her condition.

She also went on to undertake a study on human genome sequencing to treat a patient'sterminal condition and got into trouble with the patients' family over ethical issues. Bailey never compromised her patients' well-being and even if her actions breached the ethical code to some extent, she managed to give her patient new hope.

In season 12, she finally achieved her dream by becoming the Chief of Surgery at Grey Sloan Memorial. Miranda had worked very hard and even had a failed marriage as she struggled to attain what she set out to accomplish.

Miranda beat her only rival for the position, backed by her mentor Richard Webber, and after some teething trouble, managed to settle into the life of the Chief.

Miranda went through a period of tensionwhen she first started experiencing the stress of being the Chief. The burden of taking on the responsibility of practically everybody in the hospital became too much for her to take on.

In season 14, she finally suffered a heart attack but true to her nature she overcame her situation and turned her life around by starting to lead a healthier life. It was, nonetheless, a harrowing time for her.

Bailey goes on to adjust to life as the Chief and also to accept Ben's decision to change his profession drastically.

She also takes a very grown-up decision when she decides to offera young homeless boy, Joey, a home, and a family. This is the start of a new chapter in Miranda Bailey's life, and how she handles being a foster parent would have been seen in the upcoming seasons.

Alex Karev was probably one of the few characters who grew the most during the course of Grey's Anatomy. Here's how that transformation looked!

The hit ABC medical drama Grey's Anatomymight revolve around Meredith Grey but it has given audiences some beloved characters over the years.

The peds surgeon, Alex Karev, played by Justin Chambers, was probably one of the few characters who grew the most during the course of the series. From being a callousjerk to a pillar of strength for Meredith throughout the many difficult times that she went through, tobecoming one of the more mature people in her life, Alex saw quite a transformation in terms of growth. Yet, the abrupt departure of the actor in season 15 seemed to undo all the character evolution and send Alex back to the early seasons of the show.

Alex Karev was introduced as an arrogant, self-centered bratwho couldn't care less about anyone and didn't even make an effort to be civil to his colleagues. He was, in fact, a sort of foil to the softer, more gentle George O'Malley.

His not-a-care-in-the-world attitude was a major problem in the earliest seasons, causing Cristina Yang to coin the nickname 'evil spawn' for Alex.

Alex was still a bit of a jerk in season 3 and 4 but he had grown a tad less self-absorbed, thanks to Izzie's faith in him, and therefore a tad more mellow.

Alex also started getting attached to one of his patients, Ava, who was admitted aftera horrific accident that had caused her to be completely disfigured. He grew to be fond of her, meaning that he was at least capable of thinking about others, and evenmade a relatively mature decision when he asked Ava to move on and be with her husband.

Season 5 was significant for Alex as he became seriously attached to Izzie Stevens and was devastated when the latter was diagnosed with cancer.

Alex even went on to marry Izzie, knowing well that she was a terminal patient and would need the utmost care and love. It seemed as if the smart-mouth young surgical intern had found the anchor he was looking for in life, becoming accountable to someone else for the first time in his life.

Life had other plans for Karev and Izzie left him without so much as a word. It seemed like whatever strides Karev had taken as a person was about to go out the window.

Alex once again started falling back on his old ways in the aftermath of Izzie's departure. However, the season finale had a humbling moment for Alex Karev when he was shot by the gunman who later also tried to shoot and kill Derek Shepherd.

The shooting incident succeeded in making Alex rather more aware of his mortality. He initiated a project to offer treatment for African children who were not able to gainaccess to standard medical treatment.

Alex did, however, slide back to being the callous selfish guy he always had been from time to time and even told on Meredith when he thought he saw her attempting to tamper with the Alzheimer's clinical trial. He didrealize his folly eventually but not before he had messed up Meredith'slife.

Season 8 saw Alex taking a bit more responsibility. He even put his patient's life first and arrived late for his viva exam that would determine his career henceforth.

Alex finally had some good news when he gotoffered the peds fellowshipat John Hopkins Hospital, but following the devastating accident at the end of season 8, he madea mature choice and decided to postpone his fellowship to help run the peds department at Seattle Grace, now known as Grey Sloan Memorial. He also felt guilty for letting Arizona Robbins, with whom he had a mentor-mentee relationship, take his place in the plane that crashed on its way to Boise.

Alex had a better spellboth professionally and personally as he was offered a position in a high profile private organization where he could make a lot of money for the first time in his life. Of course, good things were far and few between in his life so he had to go mess it up eventually, but at least he got a taste of a life that he had never had the chance to savor.

Personally too, he finally seemed to move on from Izzie and commit to Jo Wilson, the young intern who joined Grey Sloan from season 9 onwards. More is also revealed about his past and his family, indicating that Alex has overcome many obstacles in his life to accomplish what he had.

Gone was the arrogant young intern of the early years; Alex was now one of the best surgeons at Grey Sloan, with a much more genial personality in general. He also tried to be there for Meredith when the latter lost her husband in a shocking accident. In fact, Alex had now become Meredith's 'person', now that Cristina had left.

He did still have some of his bull in a china shop moments though, which was contrary to his otherwise mellowed nature--in the season 12 finale, he hit DeLuca under the impression that the latter was forcing himself on Jo. His actions came from a place of love and care but were rather reminiscent of the old Alex.

Alex went on to make some important, mature decisions in seasons 13 and 14. He tracked down Jo's abusive husband and managed to keep his calm.

He also finally managed to get Jo to marry him, in a rather hilarious wedding. Before his final exit from the show, the now almost adorably goofy Alex was all set for a happier life.

Alex had evolved very much as a person by seasons 15 and 16; not only was he married, he had also got himself the position of Chief of Surgery at the Pacific Northwest Hospital, hoping to turn the hospital around.

However, the peculiardeparture of actor Justin Chambers towards the end of season 16 somehow managed to take thecharacter back several years, making him appear thoughtless and selfish. Sure, Izzie was his one true love but to leave his wife Jo without a word, and simply sendingletters therebynothaving to confront anybody in person, seemed like something the older, less mature Alex would have done. Though he had transformed significantly as a human being, he was at heart still the callous ol' Alex.

In a study published in Hypertension, dietary nitrate and how it lowers blood pressure in hypertensive patients was investigated.

The study noted: We randomly assigned 68 patients with hypertension in a double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial to receive daily dietary supplementation for four weeks with either dietary nitrate (250 mL daily, as beetroot juice) or a placebo (250 mL daily, as nitrate-free beetroot juice) after a two-week run-in period and followed by a two-week washout.

Daily supplementation with dietary nitrate was associated with reduction in blood pressure measured by three different methods.

The study concluded that dietary nitrate is an affordable, readily available, adjunctive treatment in the management of patients with hypertension.

In another study published in the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, the effect of a high nitrate diet on brain perfusion in older adults was analysed.

Dietary nitrate may be important when increased blood flow in hypoxic or ischemic areas is indicated, noted the study.

It continued: These conditions could include age-associated dementia and cognitive decline.

The study found that nitrates may help increase blood flow to the brain in older people and help slow cognitive decline.

It was noted that after participants consumed a high-nitrate diet that included beetroot juice, their brain MRIs showed increased blood flow in the frontal lobes which are associated with cognitive thinking and behaviour.

Katie Lansley, a PhD student from the university's Sport and Health Sciences department said: "As you get older, or if you have conditions which affect your cardiovascular system, the amount of oxygen you can take in to use during exercise drops considerably.

This means that, for some people, even simple tasks like walking may not be manageable.

"What we've seen in studies is that beetroot juice can actually reduce the amount of oxygen you need to perform even low-intensity exercise.

In principle, this effect could help people do things they wouldn't otherwise be able to do.

While we haven't yet measured the effects on the elderly or those with heart or lung conditions, there is the potential for a positive impact in these populations which we intend to go on and investigate further.

Adults over 60 with optimal blood pressure and high fitness levels can keep up mentally with people half their age, according to a recent brain-imaging study from researchers in The University of Texas at Dallas Center for Vital Longevity (CVL).

Dr. Chandramallika Basak, associate professor in the Department of Psychology in theSchool of Behavioral and Brain Sciences and director of the CVL Lifespan Neuroscience and Cognition Laboratory, said the findings help define the characteristics of superagers and shed light on the clearest path to late-life cognitive health.

Basak is senior author of a study published Sept. 9 in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience that uses functional MRI (fMRI) to investigate the effects of low fitness levels and hardened arterial walls on brain activations during a task-switching exercise. The results suggest that these cardiovascular risk factors act independently in hampering the performance of the aging mind. For people with both risk factors, the detrimental effects on the aging brain is compounded.

This kind of research helps us understand how various health factors can help protect us against declines in cognition by promoting brain activation, Basak said. Only with that understanding can we begin to think about effective interventions in mid- and late life.

For the study, pulse pressure calculated from blood pressure levels was used to measure arterial hardness, a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Basak said that most cognitive researchers have studied the effects of either fitness level or blood pressure level in the belief that the factors are correlated and represented essentially the same measure of cardiovascular health.

CVL research associate Shuo (Eva) Qin PhD19, the lead author of the paper, described another surprise: Older participants with no risk factors performed as well as younger adults.

There is no statistically significant difference between younger adults and high-health older adults in brain activations, she said. We expected a small gap, but not no gap at all.

The 88 participants included 60 in a 60-or-older cohort and 28 in a control group of UT Dallas students ages 18 to 30. No one in the older group had extraordinarily low or high fitness levels, or suffered from uncontrolled hypertension.

Even within this restricted group of healthy adults, if you have greater arterial stiffness or lower general fitness or worse, both it depletes your neural resources and your cognitive performance is significantly worse, Basak said.

For the cognitive task, participants viewed a single-digit number on either a pink or blue background. If the background was blue, subjects had to indicate if the number was high or low; if it was pink, they had to determine if the number was odd or even. Participants initially did the tasks separately, then the tasks were randomly interspersed.

We chose numbers because they are not biased against old age, native language, gender, race or socioeconomic status, Basak said. The timing in the task is also random so participants brains cant get into a rhythm and plan in advance the timing of when the numbers appear.

Qin said that the task-switching paradigm used in the study measures various cognitive processes, including some that are not affected by aging.

This allows us to examine effects of cardiovascular health factors on brain activations that are either affected by age or not affected by age, she said. Such a multidimensional approach can investigate effects of cardiovascular health factors on brain functions beyond general aging.

Basaks task-switching paradigm included a section of calling the numbers lower or higher than five, a section of odd-or-even judgments, then a section of intermixed decisions designed to test participants task-switching skills.

In fMRI, the brain is scanned about every second as the participant performs a mental task. Since more active brain areas use more oxygen, researchers can distinguish brain regions that activate during the task by an increase in flow of oxygenated blood to that region. One well-established pattern found in fMRI results of aging brains is that older adults activate frontal regions in addition to posterior regions while doing a memory or multitasking or visual task, while younger adults require only the posterior regions, where visual tasks normally take place.

What we found in our study is that older adults activate these posterior regions about the same as younger adults, Basak said. But low-fitness older adults are also activating additional frontal regions in an attempt to maintain their performance. But this compensation effort is maladaptive; it doesnt succeed in restoring their performance levels.

The researchers found that low-fitness older adults are specifically activating the inferior frontal gyrus part of the prefrontal cortex when they have to do two tasks simultaneously.

When the task is simple, the fMRIs of low-fitness older adults look very similar to the high-fit and young, Basak said. The difference is only apparent in the low-fitness brains when the tasks get harder. And the more you activate this region of the brain, the worse your performance is.

While the brain images dont conclusively indicate that cardiovascular risk factors cause cognitive issues, they do strongly suggest the two are related.

There are cardiovascular-related differences in brain activation, and the greater your risk factors, the worse you perform, Basak said. That doesnt establish cause and effect; to do that is impractical.

As the connection between these risk factors and cognitive decline become more firmly established and the characteristics of superagers are refined, Basak hopes that tactics for maintaining cognitive function can become widespread.

We hope to find ways to create superagers via interventions later in life in order to help with cognitive problems relating to fitness or blood pressure, she said.

Diseases and injuries of the musculoskeletal system and connective tissue, such as ligaments, tendons and bone, are a major cause of disability in the U.S.

MRI has increasingly become the diagnostic tool of choice for evaluation and management of these diseases and injuries, primarily due to its ability to provide information on anatomic structure and function in a noninvasive way.

But modern MRI still have some limitations.

Its ability to show connective tissue is hampered by inadequate sensitivity and the slow process of completing a MRI scan. Semi-solid and solid tissues, including collagen-rich tissues such as calcified ligaments and tendons, as well as periosteum, cortical bone and trabecular bone, provide a weak magnetic resonance signal due to their fast signal decay.

In addition, during the long time it takes to complete an MRI scan, involuntary movements of people negatively affect the clarity of the images, posing a critical challenge in obtaining high-resolution images with diagnostic value.

To address these issues, biomedical engineer Xiaoliang Zhang, a SUNY Empire Innovation Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, is leading a team of researchers from UB; University of California, Berkeley; Stanford University; University of Minnesota; Cleveland Clinic; and GE Global Research to develop advanced MRI techniques.

UB's Department of Biomedical Engineering is a joint program of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.

Funded by a five-year, $3.7 million Bioengineering Research Partnership U01 grant from the National Institutes of Health, the team will develop sensitive imaging tools for morphological and functional characterization of ligaments, tendons and bone, which are essential for studying semi-solid connective tissues in health and disease.

Through a synergistic bioengineering research partnership, we will develop advanced flexible and wearable imaging hardware, fast imaging techniques and imaging sequences at the ultrahigh field of 7 Tesla to deliver a comprehensive imaging tool, says Zhang.

In addition to these technologies, the team will also investigate the use of ultra-short echo time and zero echo time methods, which have shown unparalleled capability to image solid and semi-solid tissues that are normally invisible in MRI scans.

We expect this research to have a long-term clinical impact in the management of musculoskeletal system injuries, as well as peripheral vascular diseases, joint/cartilage disorders, and complications associated with diabetes, osteoporosis and rheumatism in humans, says Zhang.

Zhang is an internationally renowned expert in magnetic resonance imaging and its biomedical applications. He joined UB in 2018 from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and UC Berkeley and UCSFs Joint Biomedical Engineering Program, where he was professor and director of High Field MR Imaging Technology.

He is leading our efforts to improve healthcare, and working with our students to develop the next leaders in this field, says Albert Titus, professor and chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering.

Staff and faculty recognized during Research Week 2020 awards ceremony – WSU News

The Office of Research recognized staff and faculty during the virtual Research Week 2020 awards ceremony on Thursday, Oct. 15. The awards were presented by Washington State University Provost Elizabeth Chilton and Geeta Dutta, assistant vice president in the Office of Research Advancement and Partnerships.

Research Week is dedicated to celebrating achievements, building partnerships and pursuing new opportunities for WSU research. Events were held Oct. 12-16 and included sessions on women in research, artificial intelligence, quantum science and the WSU Fulbright Scholar program. Patrick Fitch, associate laboratory director for Chemical, Earth, and Life Sciences at Los Alamos National Laboratory, also presented an invited colloquium entitled Multidisciplinary R&D to Improve COVID-19 Understanding and Response.

This has been a challenging year for our researchers and staff. Even in challenging times, its always important to recognize our researchers and celebrate the achievements of our faculty and staff. They all play a vital role in our research enterprise. Congratulations to all of our winners, said Christopher Keane, vice president for research.
