Finding Your Place in The Medical Field – Michigan Medicine

Some people are born to be medical researchers like Ronald Koenig, M.D., Ph.D., an endocrinologist specializing in thyroid cancer at the University of Michigans Rogel Cancer Center. According to him, the excitement of diving into the unknown and potentially cracking the nut on a big, biological mystery is one of the medical fields greatest joys.

To think about an unanswered medical question and then create a test to try and solve that, using my knowledge and experience, has been incredibly rewarding, he says.

Now, as he transitions into retirement after his 40-year career, Koenig reflects on his proudest medical discoveries, advice for new medical students and the future of thyroid cancer care.

I moved to Michigan in 1988, splitting my professional time between medical research and being a physician. Being in a lab, but also being able to develop relationships with patients has provided unique aspects of professional fulfillment that the other doesnt for me. It gave me balance in my career that Ive appreciated.

Ive been drawn to the intellectual challenges of research since college. Often times, research can be frustrating, but the draw of solving a medical question yet to be solved is irresistible. The fact I can test a hypothesis because I find it interesting and important and take it wherever the data may lead that intellectual freedom is wonderful. Thats how science progresses.

On the other hand, I dont think Id be happy without patient care which is why Ill still do that part time at the Rogel Cancer Center. Its rewarding work. I get to see patients longitudinally, over years and years, and develop personal relationships with them.

The Medical Scientist Training Program is a combined M.D. and Ph.D. program consisting of 100 medical students. As director, I was in charge of defining the nature of program. I really enjoyed the relationship Id build with the students over the eight or nine years it takes to get both degrees and help prepare them for the field of academic medicine.

My own M.D. and Ph.D. training was critical in defining who Id become as a professional. The University of Michigan is an educational institution, and this program exists because the medical school recognizes its importance. Im grateful.

No career is perfect. Every career path has its pros and cons. Especially in medical research, there are times where you feel rejected or like you shouldve seen something and didnt. You have to learn how to adapt and move forward.

The second-gen Covid-19 stocks offering explosive opportunities: 4D Pharma – Value The Markets

4D Pharma (LSE:DDDD)

4D Pharma (LSE:DDDD) shares have surged from an all-time low of 23.5p in March to hit as high as 122p in recent days. Thats a share price not seen since May 2019. So, could the firm soar back to the 1,000p price it held four years ago?

The live biotherapeutics firm looked to be in a long and slow decline towards zero pence, dogged by hefty levels of cash burn since its 2014 AIM debut with zero revenue or profit to speak of.

The bounce back really began in mid-April 2020, when the company won approval from the UK medicines regulator, the MHRA, to start a phase II study of its MRx-4DP0004 drug for Covid-19 patients. This orally-administered drug was originally produced to treat patients with severe and uncontrolled asthma.

However, this is not the full story. The real opportunity is on a whole different scale.

Trust your gut

4D Pharmas pioneering innovation is to harness bacteria to create a revolutionary new class of medicine.

This invention called live biotherapeutics or LBPs takes gut cultures from the gastrointestinal tract and uses them to produce treatments and drugs that can aid recovery in other parts of the body.

The interplay between the gut and the brain plays an important role in treating and understanding health and disease. This is a part of human pathophysiology which is only now starting to be better understood.

Clearly, as 4Ds scientists are working to break ground in a new avenue in the science of human anatomy with few competitors worldwide there exists the potential for a fierce and defensible economic moat.

The question that investors need to ask is really whether 4D can produce defendable intellectual property from its scientific investigations before it runs out of operational cash.

MicroRx is 4D Pharmas proprietary platform that can select gut bacteria with potential therapeutic effects to treat diseases.

Its pipeline includes 15 specific candidates across cancer (oncology), IBS and Crohns Disease, gastrointestinal, autism, rheumatoid arthritis, asthma and Covid-19.

The first of these areas produced a partnership with Tier-1 pharma giant Merck to run a clinical trial for its candidate MRx0518 to be paired with Mercks Keytruda to treat solid tumours.

Then, in October 2019, Merck signed a deal with 4D for three specific indications of its LBPs.

Merck, incidentally, remains one of 4D Pharmas largest institutional shareholders with 5.8% of the issued share capital, alongside Hargreaves Lansdown, Barclays, Halifax and South Ocean Capital Partners.

Could a Merck buyout be on the cards? Its certainly something to watch out for.

The NASDAQ listing

The game changing piece of news in 4Ds favour is that it has accepted a merger with US Special Purpose Acquisition company (SPAC) Longevity in exchange for $14.6 million in cash. 4D shareholders automatically own 86% of the shares in the new vehicle, and the merger was done at a price of 110p per share, an 18% premium to the previous days closing price.

The addition of nearly $15 million in cash will help support 4Ds pipeline of treatments, while the merger will get 4D Pharma listed on NASDAQ much more quickly than it could do otherwise.

SPACs are a relatively new kind of investment vehicle in the US which mirror the reverse takeover route which has become quite popular here in the UK.

The SPAC is normally a cash shell with no operations of its own. Because its a straightforward merger the US market regulator, the SEC, rarely delays an American market debut for the new company, and it comes at much lower risk and cost than for a standard IPO.

One hundred and seventy SPAC offerings have raised more than $62 billion this year alone, with an average IPO size of $362 million. Compare that to 4D Pharmas current market cap of 153 million and the numbers start to look very juicy indeed.

The benefit to 4D Pharma of a NASDAQ listing is, of course, access to a much larger pool of capital.

NASDAQ boasts vastly improved liquidity compared to AIM, 4Ds current stock market listing.

And US investors are, in the main, much more sophisticated than those in the UK. Dont take it as an insult, its just a fact of life. What this means in reality is there are far more investors willing to buy smaller pharma companies across the Atlantic than there are here in Blighty. Especially those that are pre-profit or pre-revenue.

At 92p 4D Pharma could have much further to rise.

In August, Seres Therapeutics a company pioneering the same biotech science as 4D in the USA released very encouraging results from its clinical trials. Its market cap went on to increase from $400 million to $3 billion on that news alone.

4D Pharma shares have given up a lot of value over the years, but the Merck partnership, the proof of concept by Seres Therapeutics, and the recent NASDAQ listing news makes a re-rate much more likely. It could even mark out the company as a takeover target.

4D is certainly one to watch at these levels.

Cyberpunk 2077 releases a song that rhymes ‘Keanu Reeves’ with ‘Sleeve’ – PC Gamer

"Even in the dystopian future, hard rap lives on." So says EI-P, one half of hiphop group Run the Jewels, and he somehow manages to do so with a straight face. When Cyberpunk 2077 definitely releases on December 10, it will do so with an all-star OST including Grimes, A$AP Rocky, and Gazelle Twin (a stagename that sounds like an unused Metal Gear Solid boss.)

Today CDPR released Run the Jewels' composition, which Killer Mike quaintly describes thus: "we wanna provide you with the soundtrack to fucking shit up."

Those of us with ears will note the Keanu reference. "Cyberpunk holding a pump, Keanu Reeves, cyberarm under my sleeve. I'll blast 'em all, watch 'em fall like Autumn leaves." Well, quite.

I've listened a few times now, it's alright. Other opinions include 'lit', 'banger', and a series of fire emojis.

Cyberpunk 2077 release date: Everything you need to know – ClutchPoints

CD Projekt Red first revealed Cyberpunk 2077 in 2012. They first announced its release date to be April 2020. However, its been delayed over and over again. So what is the actual release date?

CD Projekt Red started working on Cyberpunk 2077 when they finished Witcher 3s final expansion. While Witcher 3 has been the teams biggest project until then, they decided to put in more people and resources to work on this new game.

Theyre using a new game engine to construct the game. Dubbed the REDengine 4, its a new iteration of the one they used for Witcher 3. The team received incentives from the Polish government to work on this game, amounting $7 million. All of these details point to Cyberpunk 2077 being this really big, gigantic project, increasing fan interest about the game.

Cyberpunk 2077 will also usher in the new generation of graphical fidelity. CD Projekt Red partnered with Nvidia to achieve real-time ray-tracing in the game.

Content for the game were nearly complete by mid-2019. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, staff developers were forced to work from home starting March 2020. At this point, they were only polishing the game and performing quality testing and assurance. The unexpected shift from office to work from home forced the developers to still enter crunch time, in spite of vowing not to a year prior.

CD Projekt Red initially announced that the game will be released on April 16, 2020. However, the coronavirus pandemic slowed down the production cycle, leading to an announcement that the game will have to be delayed to September 17. That date has come and gone, and CD Projekt Red yet again moves the release date to November 19.

Just last week, CD Projekt Red once again announced a delay to the game, citing quality issues.

The multiple delays have led to some to disbelieve the December 10 release date.

The rumor was denied by CD Projekt Red, claiming that they are just finalizing assets to reflect the December 10 release date.

So there we go, folks. Until further notice, Cyberpunk 2077 releases on December 10, 2020 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

Cyberpunk RED Review: Jack-in to your new favourite tabletop RPG – Express

Cyberpunk RED retains its far-flung, bombastic future where cybernetic limbs are common, and gangs rule the streets - but the world-changing event has altered almost everything players might remember from Cyberpunk 2020.

A distinct feeling of poverty now runs through the streets of Night City, and a player might struggle to get their hands on a new weapon, or Agent (a sentient cell phone/PDA in your pocket), or some clean vegetables.

This, really, is a fantastic starting point for players, as they are forced to build their characters from the ground up, with a massive focus on creating what their identity is, and what they want to achieve in the forthcoming game.

The original line-up of Cyberpunk 2020's Roles (classes) is still present - however Cops have now changed to Lawmen.

The Roles function, fundamentally, the same as they did in Cyberpunk 2020. Each one has a massive pool of abilities they can put skill point in to, with a special Role Ability which differentiates them from one another.

The Role Abilities listed in the book are detailed, and well thought out, but some stand out more than others.

While Medias can create rumours and news to change the landscape of the game, Lawmen can call for backup from their local police force.

The biggest difference about these special abilities is that they can now be upgraded, creating opportunities in which an Exec can call forth a team of underlings to fight their battles for them, while relaxing in their skyline penthouse.

Cyberpunk 2077 is just one part of a massive cyberpunk game boom that’s ‘speaking truth to power’ – SYFY WIRE

In Night City you can become anyone, anything, if your body can pay the price, says Keanu Reeves, talking straight to camera. So seize the day...and set it on fire, he adds, climbing into a sleek sports car.

This short ad for action-RPG Cyberpunk 2077 is part of a huge promotional campaign that almost exclusively teases the violent and salacious pleasures of the games imagined future. Sure, developer CD Projekt Red has also mentioned the deprivation and exploitation players will encounter in Night City, but the overriding tone of its buildup is a celebration of the criminal opportunity and hedonistic heights enabled by cybernetic modification. Dystopia is an entrepreneurs playground, and cyberpunk the genre that lends the game its name is the ultimate venue.

In these ads, todays cyberpunk looks like a glossy reprint of its 1980s heyday, luring us to party in neon sights and synth sounds while barely recalling that they once framed terrifying alternate realities. But cyberpunk isnt one thing. Its also about the moment exploring how classic themes have renewed relevance in the political present, marshaling the prophetic power of dystopian dreams in new directions. Cyberpunk is caught between past and future.

Sherryl Vint, Professor of Science Fiction Media Studies at the University of California, Riverside, explains that defining cyberpunk is not straightforward. It can be a setting, a set of iconic images, an aesthetic style, or a group of typical themes. Like film noir, also easy to recognize but difficult to define, it is all of these things in shifting combinations, a fuzzy set that changes with time and context, Vint tells SYFY WIRE.

Nowhere is this clearer than in video games, which right now are embracing cyberpunk more than ever. In Cyberpunk 2077s long shadow are dozens of recent and forthcoming titles spanning all kinds of play experiences. Many dont merely touch on cyberpunk themes, they explicitly refer to themselves as cyberpunk, have evocative names like Cloudpunk and Neon Abyss, or recreate classic cyberpunk imagery.

Like 2077, much of this new wave of cyberpunk games departs from familiar touchstones, referencing Blade Runner, Neuromancer, or The Matrix, and focusing on shady corporations, street gangs, and hackers, body modifications, and outlandish '80s fashions. While their narratives return to common issues related to social degradation and extreme technologies.

Take the recently released Ghostrunner, a slick, first-person-perspective action game set in a grim cyberpunk setting. Polish developer One More Levels narrative designer, Jan Gsior, tells us that the game exemplifies many of cyberpunks definitive features. A metropolis illuminated by neons, omnipresent augmentations, and implants, the oppressed rebelling against authority, incomprehensible virtual reality, transhumanism its all there, he says.

The two essential cyberpunk themes in the game he says are defiance, or the struggle of the underdog, and this transhumanism, which asks existential questions about the nature of consciousness and the ontological status of AI. For Gsior, its crucial that cyberpunk asks these questionswithout providing clear answers.

Other cyberpunk games approach similar ideas through very different play experiences. The forthcoming Chinatown Detective Agency, for example, is a story-led investigative drama with intertwining subplots, characters, and events. Mark Fillon, creative director of Singapore-based General Interactive Co., tells us that they dont refer to the game as cyberpunk themselves, but its hard to escape the label.

The game is set in a future where advancements in AI and automation play heavily into its storyline and backdrop, he says. He adds that hes especially interested in the social themes of cyberpunk, such as the unbridgeable and expanding rift between the social classes, the commodification of human lives, the emergence of an Epicurean and hedonistic lifestyle amid a crumbling world all these occurring in a time of technological renaissance.

These social themes and the concept of defiance recur in Solace State, a 3D visual novel about a young hacker named Chloe living in a biotech surveillance society. Solace States city looks less typically cyberpunk, at least initially, but the subject matter around it is familiar. Tanya Kan, director of Torontos Vivid Foundry studio, tells us that the game focuses on entrenched power structures, including a conglomerate, looking to seize control over a biotech revolution. Its narrative then considers the possibility of overcoming such structures from the below.

Cyberpunk centralizes speaking truth to power and finding alternative ways of finding humanity again in the underclasses, Kan explains. Many cyberpunk protagonists start off as outsiders, or in transit, or are siloed off from society in some way, and Solace States Chloe and other characters fit these subjectivities.

Many of these themes are cyberpunk staples, of course, and the danger even when deep-diving into battles against oppressive corporate power, or the intersections between humanity and technology, is one of retreading old ground. Especially when these games employ the romanticized 1980s and 1990s aesthetics of rain-soaked, near-future cities, could the motivation behind these contemporary cyberpunk fictions be primarily nostalgic?

Interest in cyberpunk now, Vint explains, like a lot of popular culture, is nostalgic in a commonplace way. People who were in their teens in the 1980s have now aged such that many occupy positions of power in creative industries. It is unsurprising that this generation would be drawn to make culture that looks back on the formative years of their own lives and experiences. So, she continues, the cyberpunk aesthetic in some recent popular culture seems to me to be about style more than content, about the cool vibe associated with the genre rather than a return to the themes pursued by original cyberpunk authors.

Some theorists of cyberpunk have also noted that the "retrofuturism"of backward-looking sci-fi worlds is inherently conservative. It creates a sense of stasis, as if the aim were to return to a time when things were more simple, rather than imagine anything genuinely new. In particular, cyberpunk can seem in-tune with a 1980s culture of neoliberal individualism and hyper-competitiveness, in which hackers and gangs seek personal enrichment and accept that no social alternative is possible. As Mike Pondsmith, creator of the Cyberpunk tabletop RPG series and co-creator of Cyberpunk 2077 has said, Cyberpunk isnt about saving humanity, its about saving yourself.

But nostalgia doesnt fully explain the current cyberpunk explosion in games, and it would be unreasonable to assume that these titles cant equally resonate with the present, in more progressive ways. Indeed, referring back to '80s cyberpunk can also reveal a continuity between current and historical problems, not least the continuing inequality and corporate dominance in neoliberal orders.

Neoliberalism was becoming mainstream in the 1980s, due to [Margaret] Thatcher and [Ronald] Reagan, predominantly, Vintsays.Original cyberpunk authors saw this and reacted to it. Now we live in a world where neoliberalism is hegemonic and so the playbook put into use in the 1980s is largely responsible for the world we live in today.

Both in terms of todays digital technology and social composition, theres an increasing sense, in fact, that cyberpunk is now actually the way things are. We are living in a cyberpunk reality, Fillon says. Technology is advancing at an incredible (and some would say alarming) rate, but through the lens of humanity, we arent making much progress.

Kan shares similar concerns and aims to address them through her game. Without a doubt, she says, with the increasing subversion of rights and untrammeled despotism experienced today, Solace States cyberpunk has relevance in highlighting not merely guns and trade, but also in politicking, the role of the media, and the power of the citizens.

Current technologies also send cyberpunk in directions that werent foreseeable. So, Vint explains, cyberpunk in the past never really predicted the monetization of online communities and the algorithm-driven polarization of online culture. For example, she says, although cyberpunk imaged elements of the bleak future associated with imagery of corporate rule and embodied precarity, it missed thinking about how some parts of online gaming culture have fostered the misogyny we saw emerge with Gamergate. She adds that this is not cyberpunks fault: its just the inevitable result of material culture unfolding in ways that were not anticipated.

The insights of todays cyberpunk are thus bound to be different because they emerge from changing social states. Cyberpunk game developers interested in more than nostalgia reconfigure what cyberpunk means as they revive it, touching on issues that matter right now. And that flexibility is as much a part of cyberpunk as any neon-lit urban sprawl or cybernetic implant.

Solace States contemporary political message, for instance, builds on a feminist cyberpunk tradition. Another sci-fi scholar, Lisa Yaszek, has written that waves of feminist cyberpunk have tended to reject the alienation, isolation, and nihilism typically associated with masculinist cyberpunk and replace it with an emphasis on creative self-expression, community, and sociopolitical change. They focus more on activism, in relation to issues of class disparity, technological exploitation, and ecological preservation.

What sets Solace State apart from other cyberpunk titles is focusing on the counter-cultural intimacy of relationship-building and community-building arising against influential powers that are trying to dismantle rights, governance, and humanity without consultation," Kan says.

She explains that Solace States story has involved consultation with activists, politicians, cultural consultants, and academics, and notes that immigrant voices are crucial for their unique vantage points on failing institutions and alternative social visions. This is why a truly diverse cyberpunk story is especially relevant in our increasingly divisive world, she tells us.

Chinatown Detective Agency offers something different with its future Singapore setting, rather than the usual American, Japanese, or fictional metropolises we see in cyberpunk. But its also interested in current global politics and social issues in a state of high-tech chaos.

The geopolitical turmoil and the reimagining of the self has caused great disunity, Fillon says, but in the background, we see technology totally changing our lives. There are still countless people dying of hunger in a world of plenty, wars, rampant corruption, and the continuing segregation of civilization into social classes. These inequalities and uncertainties feed into the game.

Ghostrunner takes a slightly different approach to its social setup, in that in its world mega-corporations have given way to an authoritarian state regime, leaving everyone fighting for survival. According to Gsior, this isnt meant as a statement about the present political situation. Instead, he says, the story and the setting illustrate aspects of the human condition that are present in the contemporary political narrative, but the fact is they have been around forever. Greed, lust for power, inequality, oppression, have always been relevant problems, no matter the level of technological advancement.

Yet Ghostrunner is still, as Gsior says, a game about defying an oppressive power, and its hard to ignore its parallels with existing political realities. We live in a time when capitalism is increasingly supported by hardline state powers, which do everything they can to turn economic or class struggles into culture wars. In this sense at least, Ghostrunners premise feels intriguingly relevant.

Perhaps more than anything, these games and many others embody the schism within cyberpunk itself. Its nostalgic reveries intertwine with unrealized promises of changing technology and the inescapable influence of existing social injustices. Like a cyborg melding of nature and computerized modifications, its a combination of contrasts that can pull in different directions, or combine into a powerful whole.

Some modern cyberpunk is living in the past, then, but its current popularity in games says as much about the importance of cyberpunk themes to understanding the present. And as digital technologies evolve further, there will be many more cyberpunk tales for games to tell, especially by indie developers experimenting with more left-field ideas. Hopefully, the industrys own corporate behemoth, Cyberpunk 2077, will expand from the history of the genre in fascinating new ways, not merely seize it (or set it on fire).

Cyberpunk 2077 is just one part of a massive cyberpunk game boom that's 'speaking truth to power' - SYFY WIRE

If a thing exists, you can probably buy a Cyberpunk 2077 themed version of it now – PC Gamer

For a game that isn't out yet, Cyberpunk 2077 sure has a lot of merchandise. As well as the usual stuff like headphones and apparel, we're also seeing big companies like OnePlus and Adidas teaming up with CDPR to get a slice of this lucrative cyberpie. Here are just a few examples of objects churned out by this relentless merchandising machine. I'm not saying you should buy this stuff. In almost every case you probably shouldn't. But it's interesting to see the cultural reach this game has developed over the years.

Disclaimer: Some of these products are not real. I made them up. But can you guess which ones? CAN YOU?

Adidas is the latest megacorp to jump into bed with CDPR. They've collaborated on a shoe, the X9000L4, whichas far as videogame themed sneakers goisn't completely hideous. But with limited availability outside of select Asian countries, they won't be easy to come by. This isn't Adidas's first videogame rodeo. Back in 2007 it collaborated with Microsoft on a Halo 3 shoe and the results were, uh well, see for yourself.

This special Cyberpunk edition of the OnePlus 8T has a unique futuristic design and, dare I say it, actually looks pretty cool. The yellow accents are tasteful, and the giant camera module has an almost retro-fitted look to it, reminding me of the design of some of the game's cars. It's a decent phone, with a 120Hz display and, based on reviews I've read, really fast charging. But pre-orders are currently only available in China, so getting your hands on one might be tricky.

Encompassing the latest in brick technology, this limited edition Cyberpunk 2077 house brick will give a futuristic edge to any construction project. Imagine it: a semi-detached suburban house built entirely from these stylish bricks. Visitors will marvel at the Cyberpunk 2077 logo repeated across the exterior of your house. Neighbours will tremble with envy. And everyone will know just how much you love dystopian open-world RPGs.

You can't actually buy this, so it's not really merch, but I'm including it anyway. In the game, the car of choice for Johnny 'Keanu Reeves' Silverhand is a modified 1977 Porsche 911 Turbo, which has been recreated in real life. It's painted in silver (obviously) and has the Samurai logo slapped on the back, as well as other subtle futuristic touches. It's currently on display at the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart, Germany, but I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up being sold at some point. Then maybe it can be yours.

Picture the scene: you're a cool cyberpunk with a mohawk, using a neural implant to hack into a megacorporation's mainframe. But damn! You screw up and the alarm sounds. You run away, guns blazing, chased by evil cyberbastardsand then your trousers fall down. Avoid this embarrassing situation by investing in this official Cyberpunk 2077 belt, which features the emblem of the 'chrome rock' band Samurai.

Cyberpunks don't sit down much, what with all the car chases, hacking, infiltration, and stabbing people with retractable arm-blades. But if they ever did sit down, they'd probably sit down on something like this. I know people love these chairs, and this is probably a high quality product, but man, I would never have one in my house. I think a chair should blend into its surroundings, not constantly alert you to its presence.

No.

Even jigsaw makers are getting in on the Cyberpunk 2077 action. This officially licensed puzzle has 1000 pieces, and comes bundled with a tote bag and a poster. I don't really have anything clever to say about this. If you're into puzzles, it seems like a good one, and I dig the image of V chilling out on a futuristic subway train. I also like the slightly weird contrast of a cutting edge videogame like Cyberpunk 2077 with a form of entertainment, the humble jigsaw, that has been around since at least 1760.

Even cyberpunks need hot water. When you're chilling back at your stylish Night City penthouse after a mission, you'll probably want to relax with a hot mug of cybertea. And that's where this Cyberpunk 2077 kettle comes in. Quite simply, it boils water. But thanks to the Samurai emblem badly Photosho I mean, printed on the side, it boils water with style. You can imagine Johnny Silverhand himself heating up water in this, brewing up a lovely mug of tea before skidding off on his motorcycle.

If you're really, really besotted with Cyberpunk 2077, and you have $300 burning a hole in your neon parachute pants, you could always spend it on this hand-painted model. It depicts the game's Trauma Teamemergency medics who operate like a SWAT squadand there's a nice amount of detail on it. But $300 worth of detail? I'm not so sure. However, figures and models, like sneakers, are some of the most inexplicably expensive items on the planet, so the price of this isn't that surprising really.

Peripheral manufacturers have been slapping videogame logos on headphones for years, so it was inevitable they would get in on the Cyberpunk action too. These ones are by SteelSeries and feature a design inspired by the game's netrunner ability. I like how they've incorporated the distinctive blue and yellow from the game's logo on the mic attachment, and SteelSeries' Arctis headsets are generally pretty good.

This ain't no ordinary egg. This is a Cyberpunk 2077 egg. Based on one Johnny Silverhand once used to cook an omelette, this egg takes breakfast to the next level. Fried eggs. Scrambled eggs. Poached eggs. Boiled eggs. You name it, you can make it with the Cyberpunk 2077 eggas long as it contains egg and nothing else. But act fast, because only a dozen were laid, and once they're gone, they're gone.

Elon Musk Comments on ‘Cyberpunk 2077’s’ Delay Hoping it Won’t Affect the Game – Tech Times

"Cyberpunk 2077's" delay was not taken kindly by fans as the game's promotion has launched it to one of the most awaited games this 2020. Since the initial trailer came out starring Keanu Reeves and showing players a glimpse of exactly what to expect, those expectations have since then been rising through the roof.

"Cyberpunk 2077" has promoted itself through the use of merch and other marketing tactics throughout the year. An article written by PCgamer begs to ask the question, just how much merch would result in too much merch? The article's title suggests that if a certain thing exists, there is already probably a "Cyberpunk 2077" theme backed up by the many merchandise all following the game.

The article then elaborates that for a particular game that has not even been released and has been delayed countless times, "Cyberpunk 2077" pretty much has quite a lot of merch. These merch revolve around certain typical things like headphones as well as apparel. Even big companies like Adidas and OnePlus have already teamed up with CDPR in order to get a chunk of this lucrative cyberpie.

There could also be a connection with regards to the backfire from fans when the game was pushed yet again and only announced on the supposed release date paired up with massive marketing that "Cyberpunk 2077" has been able to accomplish this 2020. Although nobody expected COVID-19, the news that "Cyberpunk 2077" has been delayed countless times over could possibly be a little too much for fans and many of them could even lose interest.

According to Elon Musk's reply to a Tweet saying that the existing "Cyberpunk 2077" merch is definitely going out of control, the Tesla CEO stated that he even hopes that the game does not eventually twist itself to tedium due to the fear of eventually being canceled. This could be interpreted as Elon Musk being one of the many gamers awaiting the final release of the game which although a final release date has been announced, has still been deemed as skeptical for some fans.

"Cyberpunk 2077's" popularity and uneasy fans have put a lot of pressure on the game to make up for the constant delays. The pressure grows even bigger as Elon Musk himself is also hoping that the delay does not affect the game in any way.

The only particular way to know if the game is worth it would be to try it out upon release which, however, might still take a little bit more time. Would fans still buy more "Cyberpunk 2077" merch before the launch despite the delay?

"Tomorrow RTJ enters Night City with 'No Save Point' @cyberpunkgame," Run the Jewels wrote on Instagram on November 11, along with colorful cover art. In the artwork, the rappers are seen guns blazing from their BuickGrand National and racing through a dense market location in Night City, the fictional city in the game based on the Free State of Northern California.

The artwork was designed by Toronto-based illustrator Mad Dog Jones. Run the Jewels also made the announcement on Twitter. Check out their post below.

Fans went into a frenzy and have been quick to share their excitement. "Perfect fit for that game," said a fan on Instagram while another wrote, "I can hear it right now." One fan said of the cover art, "Please make this a shirt!"

Mad Dog Jones also dropped a comment to share his excitement, saying, "So hyped, such an honor to get to create with RTJ!."Over on Twitter, a fan wrote, "Hell yes," and another added, "holy f**k yes."

Hell yes

One fan said, "Yalls music is literally perfect for this game. SO hyped. From album of the year to music for the game of the year!"

'No Save Point' will follow the duo's single 'JU$T' which features Pharrell Williams and Zack de la Rocha and appears on their latest studio album 'RTJ4'. Run the Jewels surprise-released the album back in July and have still been making headlines since its release.

If you haven't been introduced to the game by now, it's time to get on the news, as 'Cyberpunk 2077' is expected to be the biggest video game release in the past decade, if not all time. It will feature a starring role by Keanu Reeves and is created large-scale in a massive and immersive open-world action RPG environment.

Several gaming companies have had to adjust their new projects' release dates according to that of the upcoming CD Project Red AAA title. Although, its release date has been pushed back several times and its latest delay has left fans frustrated.Nevertheless, it's refreshing to see the game's latest news update is a new Run the Jewels song and we can't wait to hear it.

BMW’s Cyberpunk Motorrad Definition CE 04 Concept Is Here to Drag Scooters Into the Future – The Drive

Unless you're into retro-cool Vespas, scooter design can be a bit lacking. Let's face it, the ride-sharing Revels are really just things city folks tip over because we have no cows. Finally, BMW wants to bring urban two-wheelin' into the future with an electric concept that looks like it's straight out of a cyberpunk anime: the Motorrad Definition CE 04.

It's everything most electric scooters aren't: angular, long and low. The rear of the scooter was left uncovered to both show off the machinery powering it and give off serious sci-fi vibes. The pearly white exterior is a nice contrast with the matte black mechanical bits, too.

Most importantly, the Motorrad Definition CE 04 sounds like a delightfully functional vehicle. The drivetrain is very compact and the flat battery is mounted in the bottom of the scooter, allowing for a low center of gravity that should be easier to ride and tons of storage up top. Its illuminated under-seat storage area has a door that opens up horizontally and enough room to stash a helmet.

Details are scarce as it's not a production vehicle, but it was designed first and foremost for city commuters, who BMW says ride about 7.5 miles a day or less. The "floating" bench seat was designed for more leg room even for taller riders, and it features a 10.25-inch screen that's designed to be connected to a smartphone. That screen would be the biggest ever on a scooter if the Motorrad Definition CE 04 ever goes into production.

BMW even designed a trick new parka to go with the Motorrad Definition CE 04 with light guides on the sleeves and hood for better visibilty and an inside pocket with an inductive charging field for a smartphone. The wearer can turn on and even change the color of the parka's lights from inside its sleeve.

All we have to say is...build it. As The Verge notes, the Motorrad Definition CE 04 looks to be a futuristic step up from its 2014 C Evolution electric scooter, which featured a top speed of 80 mph and an impressive 99 miles of range. It was a pricey scooter then, though, and didn't look as cool. If there was ever a time where we need a more affordable electric scooter that matches the dystopian mood in the room, it's now.

Adidas unveils Cyberpunk 2077 shoes and they look grittily cool – GEEKSPIN

The highly anticipated release of Cyberpunk 2077 is just a month away, so collaborations promoting the video game have started to roll out. One of the exciting collabs is a shoe line from Adidas and CD Projekt Red, which is the developer and publisher of the video game.

Officially revealed last week, the collection is comprised of X9000L4 and X90004D sneakers that incorporate the typeface and color schemes seen in the teasers for Cyberpunk 2077. The X90004D features a black Primeknit upper with yellow CYBERPUNK logo, laces, and heel counter lettering.

The X9000L4, meanwhile, comes in four different colors: gray, black, white, and a leopard pattern. Each of these silhouettes has its own flashy accents ranging from turquoise, red, gold, purple, and silver.

Reactions to the shoe line are mixed. While some sneakerheads think the designs of the shoes capture the cool grit of Night City (the setting of the video game), others find them unappealing. Apparently, the pricing is also an issue for some fans. For $200 Id never wear them, commented one Twitter user on a tweet by Hypebeast about the collection.

The shoe line doesnt have an official release date yet, but many are expecting a November 11th launch with prices ranging from $190 to $250. Unfortunately for some fans, CD Projekt RED business relations director Rafal Jaki revealed that the sneakers will not be available worldwide.

As Im getting a lot of questions about this the Adidas X Cyberpunk 2077 Collab is available in selected Asian markets only. As a partner we dont make the distribution decisions as that is Adidas core competence, Jaki wrote tweeted, along with some pictures of the sneakers and characters from the video game.

Cyberpunk 2077 is scheduled to be released for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on December 10th.

NETFLIX is testing out its own TV channel in France.

Greta Thunberg on 2 very surreal years of protest and fame – Minneapolis Star Tribune

NEW YORK In the first days of Greta Thunberg's solitary sidewalk protest outside Swedish Parliament in August 2018, most walk right past her. Some pause and ask why she's not in school. But people steadily begin to take notice of the steadfast 16-year-old girl.

Those humble beginnings of Thunberg's protest the unlikely birth of a global movement are seen in the opening minutes of the new documentary "I Am Greta." Since then, Thunberg has met world leaders, been vilified by others, and seen countless join her in an ever-growing resistance to environmental complacency. It's a journey she readily describes as totally surreal "It's like living in a movie and you don't know the plot," she says but also affirming.

"I look back and I remember how it felt. I think: Oh, I was so young and naive back then which is quite funny," says Thunberg, recalling her first days of protest in an interview. "So much has changed for me since then but also so much hasn't changed from the bigger perspective."

"I feel like now I'm happier in my life," she adds. "When you do something that's meaningful, it gives you the feeling that you're meaningful."

"I Am Greta," which debuts Friday on Hulu, is the first documentary to chart the meteoric rise of Thunberg from an anonymous, uncertain teen to an international activist. As an intimate chronicle of a singular figure, it plays like a coming-of-age story for someone who seemed, from the start, uncannily of age. The film, directed by Nathan Grossman, captures the head-spinning accomplishments, and the toll they sometimes take, on the bluntly impassioned Thunberg.

For an activist who insists on putting the cause before herself, it's also a somewhat uncomfortable acceptance of the spotlight. "I haven't really achieved anything," Thunberg says, speaking by phone from Sweden. "Everything the movement has achieved."

She doesn't endorse everything about the documentary. It should come as no surprise that Thunberg, who has called her Asperger's syndrome her "superpower" a condition she believes only enhances her ability to be straightforward and focused has a few notes.

"I don't really like the title of the film, 'I Am Greta.' It makes it seem like I take myself very seriously," says Thunberg. (In Sweden, the film is simply called "Greta," but that title was recently taken by the 2018 Isabelle Huppert film.) "Also the poster. I look like I have make-up on. I don't like the poster and the title."

Grossman began filming Thunberg soon after she began protesting in August 2018, but he didn't expect much from it. He told Thunberg he might not stick around for more than a few hours. He shot in half-resolution to save memory cards.

But as time went on, and young people around the world began following Thunberg's lead, Grossman realized he had unwittingly captured the first moments of an unfolding zeitgeist. The project evolved and Grossman continued to shadow Thunberg up to her scorching speech at the United Nations in which she admonished world leaders: "We are in the beginning of a mass extinction, and all you can talk about is money and fairy tales of eternal economic growth. How dare you."

"She felt that a movie about her could help clarify things," says Grossman. "In the media, I think, she hasn't felt that she recognized herself. The one-dimensional character of Greta is a very angry, frustrated girl. In the movie, you see so much more that she's also funny and has different sides."

Part of the power of Thunberg is that, as a 17-year-old, she literally embodies a future imperiled by the inaction of older generations. "I Am Greta" is in a way a profile of generational divide, where adults and politicians line up to take selfies with a young woman who despite her stature sometimes struggles to get out of bed for an appointment or cries for home while sailing across the Atlantic.

But if Thunberg, Time magazine's Person of the Year in 2019, is recognizably human in "I Am Greta," she's also ruthlessly frank. She doesn't mince words on Earth's trajectory. She dismisses superficial gestures for change. And she shrugs off those who dismiss or mock her message. Asked how she felt watching news clips of Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin deriding her in the film, Thunberg laughs.

"That's one of the highlights! It's hysterically funny," Thunberg says. "It just proves that you're doing something right. If you're being attacked by these kinds of people that shows you're doing something right. It just shows how desperate they are not to talk about the climate."

During the pandemic, Thunberg has seen climate slip from front pages. But she wishes the climate could generate the same level of alarm that COVID-19 has. "It feels like we're stuck no matter what we do," she says. "We won't achieve real change unless we actually start to treat the climate crisis like a crisis."

In September, Thunberg was again outside Swedish Parliament for a socially distanced climate protest, part of thousands of school strikes held that day. But watching the U.S. presidential debates, where climate was a little-discussed issue and summarily dismissed by Trump, she says, has been eye-opening.

"It surprises me. I knew the situation in the U.S. was bad when it comes to climate, that it's being treated as an opinion rather than actual scientific fact, but I didn't know it was this bad," says Thunberg. "Europe and Sweden, we are very, very far from where we need to be in the discussion. But compared to the U.S., it's just surprising."

Earlier this fall, Thunberg returned to school after taking a year off.

"I've missed it a lot. It just feels very good to be back in school and to do normal things, to have routines. I love routines that's probably a lot because of my autism," she says. "And in this environment, I'm almost anonymous in a way. People know who I am, of course, but I'm not there because I'm famous. I'm there to do something else, I'm just like the rest."

Anonymity might no longer be a long-term option for Thunberg, who will turn 18 in January. But it's a tradeoff she will make. When she reflects on the last two years, she sounds dangerously close to being something few would label Thunberg: an optimist.

"Before I started doing this, my experience was that no one cared. Now I've been proven wrong. Obviously, many people, especially young people, care about the climate crisis and the future, and that's encouraging," says Thunberg. "Humanity has not yet failed. We are failing, but humanity has not failed."

Cenotaph shame: When Extinction Rebellion is so hateful how can anyone respect its cause? – Express

Extinction Rebellion activists prompted fury this Armistice Day by co-opting the Remembrance display at the Cenotaph with demonstrations and placing an unlicensed wreath above those dedicated to fallen soldiers reading CLIMATE CHANGE: ACT NOW. A banner, reading HONOUR THEIR SACRIFICE: CLIMATE CHANGE MEANS WAR was also carried and attached to the gate, blocking the view of the memorial. They were removed by Met Police two hours later.

Why they remained on display for so long is anyone's guess.

Former private Donald Bell spearheaded the stunt, in uniform, and stepped through poppy wreaths laid at the memorial to place his, paramount, above the rest.

XRs latest stunt might be their most staggering show of climate-fuelled anti-natalism and anti-humanism yet.

XR co-founder Stuart Basden wrote the movement isnt about the climate, but instead dismantling the cruelty and violence of 600 years of colonialism conducted by European civilisation, and its institutions of patriarchy, white supremacy, and heteronormativity.

Fellow XR co-founder, Roger Hallam, has said that forcing governments to act or bringing them down in order to implement XRs preferred climate policies will require some to die in the process.

A sticker campaign calling Humans the disease and Corona the cure landed an East Midlands XR chapter in hot water in March (another chapter claiming to be the main XR group did distance themselves from the claim but the structure is so murky it is very difficult for the public to know who to believe.)

In the States, Green New Deal supporter and 2020 Presidential primary candidate Senator Bernie Sanders endorsed expanding abortion access in third-world nations, to reduce carbon emissions through population control.

Previous prophecies havent panned out. From the Population Bomb, to Al Gores Inconvenient Truth, and even Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortezs recent inflated claim that the IPCC report says the world is to end in 12 years, these crazy predictions never come true.

When the climate narrative is controlled by out-of-touch radicals like this who continually demonstrate their disregard for working people and a disdain for the West, is it any surprise so many are opposed to the activism currently characterised as representative of the environmental movement? The 44 percent of Brits driven to apathy about climate issues by proclamations of an impending ecological apocalypse are excoriated as anti-science and deniers.

In a time of economic downturn and supply-line interruption, working families are rightly concerned about what their family requires, and the security and reliability of obtaining that.

Further disruptions to our way of life after a tumultuous year will inevitably be opposed, and all the more fervently when advocated by a group demonstrating such little respect as Extinction Rebellion often do.

But optimism may be derived from this flagrant display of disrespect. National lockdowns have served as an incidental repudiation of eco-socialists position that ending capitalism will stop the oncoming eco-pocalypse.

The halting of travel and production in nations worldwide for months was found to have a negligible impact, compared to predicted proactive responses invigorated by green stimulus and reductions in fossil fuel investments.

For all their theatrics and rhetoric, these cultish Luddites dont have any actual answers.

Our solutions will instead come from the experts and entrepreneurs developing tech to transport us into a clean, capitalist future.

If empowered by less government intervention, the private sector will fulfil the UK Institute of Directors business purpose clause of allowing the free market to profit from providing solutions toinstead of creatingproblems for our planet and its people.

The pathway to post-COVID economic and environmental recovery is through responsible free-market action. And nothing refutes radicalism better than results.

Quite simply, XR represents no one.

They do not represent British young people. They do not represent rational, sensible environmentalists. And they certainly do not represent groups like the British Conservation Alliance.

It is inexcusable to obfuscate this century-long tradition of solemnly honouring and expressing gratitude for lives lost in armed conflict with a ghoulish hijacking to platform an ideological obsession.

As the Royal British Legion rightly objected, Armistice Day is not for political protest.

No sacred cow of our contemporary zeitgeist entitles you to make a memorial service your soapbox.

The sacrifices made by Britain and her allies armed forces should not be made of subordinate concern to some zealots fixation with contemporary events.

Former Royal Green Jackets captain and current Conservative party MP, Tobias Ellwood, reiterated how alienating this stunt will prove to be, particularly if copycat theatrics are attempted at other events. Those with sense and decorum hope that the righteous objections to this stunt dissuade radicals from further attempts at distasteful thefts of the limelight, and encourage principled and pragmatic approaches to contemporary climate issues going forward.

Connor Tomlinson is Policy Director at the British Conservation Alliance a Conservative young persons organisation with student representation at 30 British universities.

Words of 2020: Nominees Announced | Nippon.com – Nippon.com

On November 5, the publisher Jiy Kokuminsha announced its list of nominees for the words and phrases encapsulating the zeitgeist of the year 2020. A complete list of the nominees, explained.

As expected, the COVID-19 pandemic figured heavily in this years list of nominees for the Word (or Words) of the Year. The spread of the novel coronavirus meant that terms describing the disease and medical measures taken in response, along with those talking about its impact on society and peoples lives, were certain to appear frequently on the list of 30 terms released annually by the publisher Jiy Kokuminsha, whose annual language guide Gendai ygo no kiso chishiki (Basic Knowledge on Contemporary Terminology) is also likely to focus on them in its next edition.

As Japan grappled with its new normal, and people who were not essential workers were pressed to stay at home, perhaps ordering from Uber Eats and passing the time with some Animal Crossing, the Japanese language saw these phrases, and many more listed below, enter the mainstream of everyday communication.

4 Ai no fujichaku/Dai-yoji Kanry bmu. South Koreas hit Netflix drama Sarangui bulsichak (Crash Landing on You) told the story of a cross-border love affair between members of the southern and northern elite. Under its Japanese title, Ai no fujichaku, it was seen as part of a fourth Korean wave to hit the countrys shores.

Atarashii seikatsu yshiki/Ny nmaru. During the COVID-19 pandemic, people in Japan and around the world have adjusted the way they live to reduce the risk of infection. Increases in wearing of masks and working from home are among such actions representing the new normal.

Atsumori. Launched in March 2020, shortly before Japan declared a pandemic state of emergency calling on residents to stay indoors, Nintendos smash simulation game Atsumare: Dbutsu no Mori (Animal Crossing: New Horizons) offered a way to pass the time that was enthusiastically taken up by many.

Abenomasuku. Face mask shortages in the early stages of the pandemic prompted Prime Minister Abe Shinz to institute a policy distributing millions of cloth masks to households across Japan. Nicknamed Abenomasks after his Abenomics economic policies, the face coverings came under fire, however, for being too small.

Amabie. One unexpected result of the COVID-19 outbreak was a revival in popularity for the ykai (supernatural spirit) Amabie, which legend claims first emerged from the sea in the nineteenth century. Its purported efficacy against disease led to its image appearing on many goods, and it even formed the model for wagashi sweets.

b tsu. With more people staying at home, food delivery firm Uber Eats got a boost, and bicycle and motorbike riders carrying its cubic backpacks became a familiar sight on Japanese streets.

AI-goe. Prodigy Fujii Sta made further strides in shgi this year, winning his first two major titles either side of his eighteenth birthday. His instinct for the best move led him to be described as better than AI.

Essensharu wk. Japan was among the countries noting the contributions of essential workers who cannot operate remotely, such as health workers, supermarket clerks, and waste collectors.

Ouchi jikan/sutei hmu. As politicians called on residents to stay at home, people found new ways to spend the ouchi jikan (home time). Singer Hoshino Gen created social media buzz with his Instagram-released song Uchi de odor (Dance at Home).

Onrain . Zoom and other services provided venues for online activities that were previously normally face to face, including medical checks, lessons, work meetings, family visits, and drinking parties.

Kaogei/Ongaeshi. The popular drama Hanzawa Naoki returned to broadcaster TBS, entertaining fans with its characteristic over-the-top showmanship. Viewers have delighted in the kabuki-like exaggerated facial expressions of performers, the kaogei typically captured close-up for full dramatic effect. Actor Kagawa Terayuki, in the role of wada Akira, struck a chord with his line promising ongaeshirepayment in kind for the offenses of a rivaldelivered with spine-tingling impact.

Kagopaku. Supermarkets and other retailers rolled out preventive measures after enduring an uptick in customers walking off with shopping baskets to avoid paying newly mandated fees for plastic bags that went into effect in July. The term combines kago (basket) with the colloquialism pakuru, meaning to steal.

Kimetsu no yaiba. The comic series Demon Slayer by Gotge Koyoharu has come to be a social phenomenon in Japan, with fans of all ages mimicking the catch phrases of characters and tuning in to watch the animated television spinoff. In October, an anime movie based on the work shattered Japanese box office records, earning over 10 billion in the first 10 days after its release.

Kurasut. As the coronavirus pandemic rages, Japan has made scouting out and preventing clusters, or groups of cases tied to a certain place and time, a central plank of its COVID-19 response strategy.

Ksui. Musician Eito found unexpected fame with his song Ksui (Perfume). Released in April 2019, the tune stayed under the radar until early 2020, when TikTok users began sharing covers of the tune on the app, bringing it to the attention of celebrities who then featured the song in videos.

GoTo GoTo kyanpn. The government rolled out its controversial GoTo campaigns in a bid to boost the countrys service industry, which has been hit hard by the pandemic. The programs provide subsidies of varying amounts for travel, eating out, shopping, and attending events, but they have drawn criticism due to cases of abuse and health concerns over spreading the coronavirus.

3 San mitsu (mittsu no mitsu). The World Health Organization has recently adopted the strategy of avoiding the three Cs to prevent the spread of COVID-19, borrowing a page from the Japanese three mitsu playbook of steering clear of confined and enclosed spaces (mippei), crowded places (missh), and close-contact settings (missetsu).

Jishuku keisatsu. In the early months of the pandemic, the government asked residents to show self-restraint (jishuku) by refraining from going out unless absolutely necessary and likewise implored shops to close their doors for a set time. While authorities had no legal means to enforce the policy, do-gooders stepped in as self-appointed police (keisatsu), scolding people for not wearing masks, berating drivers with out-of-prefecture plates, and rebuking businesses for staying open.

Zoom Zoom bae. With remote work on the rise, employees using conferencing apps like Zoom are trying to stand out at online meetings with eye-catching virtual backgrounds and perfectly applied makeup. The newly coined phrase combines the popular service with the verb haeru, meaning to look nice or stand out.

Sgteki, fukanteki. Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide drew sharp criticism from opposition leaders and scholars for rejecting six appointees to the Science Council of Japan, a leading academic body in the country. Suga refrained from giving a specific reason for the refusal, insisting instead that the decision was to ensure the comprehensive (sgteki) and panoramic (fukanteki) activities of the organization.

Ssharu disutansu. Social distance was the imported term describing the space people needed to maintain among themselves to avoid the three Cs and stay safe from COVID-19 infection while taking part in activities in social settings.

Soro kyanpu. Solo camping was one popular way for people to maintain that distance while enjoying the great outdoors. Camping had a growing allure for nature-lovers before the pandemic kicked in, with the comedian Hiroshi launching a popular YouTube channel detailing his outdoor exploits and glamping, glamorous camping with comfortable lodgings and high-end cuisine, also attracting big spenders to Japans wilder locations.

Terewku/Wkshon. Telework became a mainstay for white-collar workers able to do their jobs from home or other non-office locations, while workations were promoted by national and local governments, along with some major employers, as a way to keep the engines of industry running while workers enjoyed time in resort settings. Rimto wku (remote work) and zaitaku kinmu (performing ones duties at home) were also commonly heard terms in 2020.

Toki o modos. Lets go back in time was the phrase used by Shinji Taiy, half of the comedy duo Pekopa, to get the conversation back on track when his partner, Shpei, made a foolish statement as the boke, the dim-witted foil to Shinjis sharp-tongued tsukkomi character. The pairs popular acts revolved around Shinjis clever last-minute verbal gymnastics to turn an insult toward Shpei into an (often snobbish) admission that his point of view had something to it as well.

NiziU Pronounced nij in Japanese, this all-girl idol group came out of the Nizi Project, which held grueling auditions in the standard Korean pop-music style to choose its members from a pool of Japanese and Korean applicants. Produced by J. Y. Park, who also put megastars like Twice and 2PM on K-pop fans radar, NiziU saw its popularity boom with a website sharing the groups videos with eager viewers.

Nk sesshokusha. Close contacts were people who had spent a considerable amount of time with, or been physically close to, confirmed carriers of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Health workers sought to track down these contacts, who had a high likelihood of testing positive themselves, before they could spread COVID-19 to others. The technical definition of these close contacts eventually came to encompass people who had been near (within 1 meter of) a confirmed virus carrier, without wearing masks or taking other precautions, for 15 minutes or more within two days of the carriers hospitalization.

BLM BLM und. The Black Lives Matter movement made its impact felt in Japan, too, after George Floyd, an African-American, was killed by police in Minneapolis, Minnesota, touching off protests that spread across the United States and then worldwide. Tennis star saka Naomi boosted awareness of the movement in Japan with the masks that she wore bearing the names of victims of racist violence.

PCR PCR kensa. Polymerase chain reaction testing is a common, if complex, way to test for SARS-CoV-2 infection in an individual. Positive results for these tests represent the bulk of the total confirmed COVID-19 cases reported in Japan to date.

Fuwa-chan. The stage name taken by Fuwa Haruka for her YouTube exploits became a highly recognized moniker across all media this year. Usually clad in neon colors and a sports bra, Fuwa-chan is an energetic celeb who has successfully made the leap from her video channel to television shows ranging from comedy to infotainment.

M n. Yeah, well, youre right there was a catch phrase used by the members of the female comedy team Boru-jukuparticularly Tanabe Chika, who commonly says it when Kgo Anri manages to defuse an insult delivered by her or the third group member, Kiriya Haruka, about Tanabes appearance. (A fourth member, Sakayori Nozomi, is taking time off for childbirth, but narrates the groups videos on YouTube.)

Reckoning With 2020 Vision: Is it Over Yet? – KC STUDIO – kcstudio.org

So how has your year gone?

And do we have anything more to worry about?

As I write this, I do not know whether today, as youre reading, we have a conclusive view of the current state of our democracy. But lets hope and work for the best, and perhaps count our proverbial turkeys in this usually thankful, resoundingly transformed, season.

In recent months, against the backdrop of isolation and noise, I managed to fill my time with work, sustenance and cultural reflection.

Opportunities increased to experience music as its being made, both online and in safely distanced physical settings. Symphony players in the Nelson-Atkins sculpture park. Latin American string music warming the chilled night air from the alley stage at The Ship. Joyce DiDonato streaming live in a gorgeous recital from Germany. An African drum troupe celebrating the 100th birthday of Charlie Parker.

My current major writing project has been gathering steam as the manuscript takes shape and fills out, and as new material arrives via archives, books and human sources almost daily.

Another research project, involving art and jazz, led me to discover a 60-year-old movie, Paris Blues (1961). I couldnt believe Id never watched it before, and I was astounded by how relevant it could feel. Like the recent Netflix series The Eddy, the film is centered around a small Paris jazz club, and its major concern has to do with race.

Paul Newman and Sidney Poitier play American ex-pat musicians in the City of Light for their own different reasons. One day, the inter-racial musical friends encounter two free-spirited American women Joanne Woodward and Diahann Carroll, one white, one Black, of course on a vacation lark together. Well, as these things happen, relationships ensue. In the case of Newman-Woodward, the affair steamed up in ways you never saw in, say, Mr. and Mrs. Bridge, which was made three decades later (in Paris and Kansas City) from the Evan Connell novels.

A trumpeter played by Louis Armstrong makes a vibrant cameo appearance in the club. But beyond the music, the interpersonal drama reaches its peak tension in dialogue between the two Black lovebirds. Carrolls character wants Poitier to go home with her to America. He explains why thats not possible, why he remains more comfortable in his Blackness away from the states.

Just this year, as we all know, we have entered a new era of racial reckoning.

For historical perspective, I cant recommend highly enough Isabel Wilkersons new book, Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents. Wilkerson threads together the global history of brutal social systems under which torture and lynching were matters of widely accepted practice, and American segregation and anti-miscegenation laws inspired the German Nazi regimes march to genocide in the 1930s and 40s. Such gut-wrenching, violent experience gives the lie to the whining bros who think that, in the midst of the troubling pandemic, their mask-free liberty has been at stake. They know nothing of suppression and indignity.

Books on African American history and race issues quickly became abundant and reached bestseller status this year. Another one that I found enlightening was The Sword and the Shield, a dual biography of Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X, by Peniel E. Joseph, which presents a more nuanced account of the triumphs, tragedies and mutual aims of these two leaders than the typical gloss has it. The background of the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 60s will spark frequent reminders, alas, that we have been here too many times before.

One new thing: The KC Art on the Block project made a large and important impression on the citys streetscape. Six Black Lives Matter pavement murals, each designed by a different artist, stretched for a collective 2,000 feet. The project successfully reflected community collaboration and a sense of the Zeitgeist.

On the day the painting began, an opportunity occurred to me, and I posted about it briefly on social media. Standing in the middle of Troost Avenue as the outlines of the words Black Lives Matter were being filled in with paint struck me as a momentous step beyond the citys regretful past. This street had long symbolized the stark segregation built into the infrastructure of Kansas City as elsewhere. Perhaps we have found a new road forward. I shudder to think of the alternative.

The Husband-and-Wife Team Behind the Leading Vaccine to Solve Covid-19 – The New York Times

Two years ago, Dr. Ugur Sahin took the stage at a conference in Berlin and made a bold prediction. Speaking to a roomful of infectious disease experts, he said his company might be able to use its so-called messenger RNA technology to rapidly develop a vaccine in the event of a global pandemic.

At the time, Dr. Sahin and his company, BioNTech, were little known outside the small world of European biotechnology start-ups. BioNTech, which Dr. Sahin founded with his wife, Dr. zlem Treci, was mostly focused on cancer treatments. It had never brought a product to market. Covid-19 did not yet exist.

But his words proved prophetic.

On Monday, BioNTech and Pfizer announced that a vaccine for the coronavirus developed by Dr. Sahin and his team was more than 90 percent effective in preventing the disease among trial volunteers who had no evidence of having previously been infected. The stunning results vaulted BioNTech and Pfizer to the front of the race to find a cure for a disease that has killed more than 1.2 million people worldwide.

It could be the beginning of the end of the Covid era, Dr. Sahin said in an interview on Tuesday.

BioNTech began work on the vaccine in January, after Dr. Sahin read an article in the medical journal The Lancet that left him convinced that the coronavirus, at the time spreading quickly in parts of China, would explode into a full-blown pandemic. Scientists at the company, based in Mainz, Germany, canceled vacations and set to work on what they called Project Lightspeed.

There are not too many companies on the planet which have the capacity and the competence to do it so fast as we can do it, Dr. Sahin said in an interview last month. So it felt not like an opportunity, but a duty to do it, because I realized we could be among the first coming up with a vaccine.

After BioNTech had identified several promising vaccine candidates, Dr. Sahin concluded that the company would need help to rapidly test them, win approval from regulators and bring the best candidate to market. BioNTech and Pfizer had been working together on a flu vaccine since 2018, and in March, they agreed to collaborate on a coronavirus vaccine.

Since then, Dr. Sahin, who is Turkish, has developed a friendship with Albert Bourla, the Greek chief executive of Pfizer. The pair said in recent interviews that they had bonded over their shared backgrounds as scientists and immigrants.

We realized that he is from Greece, and that Im from Turkey, Dr. Sahin said, without mentioning their native countries long-running antagonism. It was very personal from the very beginning.

Dr. Sahin, 55, was born in Iskenderun, Turkey. When he was 4, his family moved to Cologne, Germany, where his parents worked at a Ford factory. He grew up wanting to be a doctor, and became a physician at the University of Cologne. In 1993, he earned a doctorate from the university for his work on immunotherapy in tumor cells.

Early in his career, he met Dr. Treci. She had early hopes to become a nun and ultimately wound up studying medicine. Dr. Treci, now 53 and the chief medical officer of BioNTech, was born in Germany, the daughter of a Turkish physician who immigrated from Istanbul. On the day they were married, Dr. Sahin and Dr. Treci returned to the lab after the ceremony.

The pair were initially focused on research and teaching, including at the University of Zurich, where Dr. Sahin worked in the lab of Rolf Zinkernagel, who won the 1996 Nobel Prize in medicine.

In 2001, Dr. Sahin and Dr. Treci founded Ganymed Pharmaceuticals, which developed drugs to treat cancer using monoclonal antibodies.

After several years they founded BioNTech as well, looking to use a wider range of technologies, including messenger RNA, to treat cancer. We want to build a large European pharmaceutical company, Dr. Sahin said in an interview with the Wiesbaden Courier, a local paper.

Even before the pandemic, BioNTech was gaining momentum. The company raised hundreds of millions of dollars and now has more than 1,800 people on staff, with offices in Berlin, other German cities and Cambridge, Mass. In 2018, it began its partnership with Pfizer. Last year, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation invested $55 million to fund its work treating H.I.V. and tuberculosis. Also in 2019, Dr. Sahin was awarded the Mustafa Prize, a biennial Iranian prize for Muslims in science and technology.

Dr. Sahin and Dr. Treci sold Ganymed for $1.4 billion in 2016. Last year, BioNTech sold shares to the public; in recent months, its market value has soared past $21 billion, making the couple among the richest in Germany.

The two billionaires live with their teenage daughter in a modest apartment near their office. They ride bicycles to work. They do not own a car.

Ugur is a very, very unique individual, Mr. Bourla, Pfizers chief executive, said in the interview last month. He cares only about science. Discussing business is not his cup of tea. He doesnt like it at all. Hes a scientist and a man of principles. I trust him 100 percent.

In Germany, where immigration continues to be a fractious issue, the success of two scientists of Turkish descent was cause for celebration.

With this couple, Germany has a shining example of successful integration, wrote the conservative-business site Focus.

A member of Parliament, Johannes Vogel, wrote on Twitter that if it was up to the far-right Alternative for Germany party, there would be no #BioNTech of Germany with zlem Treci & Ugur Sahin at the top.

If it were up to critics of capitalism and globalization, he added, there would be no cooperation with Pfizer. But that makes us strong: immigration country, market economy & open society!

Dr. Sahin has had little time for politics this year. BioNTech has been so busy developing a vaccine that the company has not finalized the financial details of its partnership agreement with Pfizer.

Trust and personal relationship is so important in such business, because everything is going so fast, Dr. Sahin said. We still have a term sheet and not yet a final contract on many things.

Dr. Sahin said he and Dr. Treci learned about efficacy data on Sunday night and marked the moment by brewing Turkish tea at home. We celebrated, of course, he said. It was a relief.

Christopher F. Schuetze contributed reporting from Berlin.
