(Copyright Merlin Dietrich 2012) Alan Turing (1912-1954) is widely considered to be the father of computer science and artificial intelligence. During World War II he worked at Britain #39;s codebreaking centre Bletchley Park, and was responsible for breaking the German code, a decisive moment in the course of the war. Turing #39;s homosexuality resulted in a criminal prosecution in 1952, when homosexual acts were still illegal in the United Kingdom. He accepted chemical castration as an alternative to prison. He died in 1954, just over two weeks before his 42nd birthday, from cyanide poisoning. He apparently poisoned himself with cyanide secreted in an apple, and this is believed by some to be the meaning behind the name of the Apple corporation and its logo, the bitten apple.
