Cowboys’ Jamize Olawale opts out amid COVID-19 pandemic, paving the way for much more creative offense in 2020 – CBS Sports

While players from the around the league file in to opt out of the 2020 NFL season due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Dallas Cowboys have mostly been spared. Although they've already had two players opt out, neither were expected to be starters this coming season, namely undrafted rookie receiver Stephen Guidry and newly-signed veteran cornerback Maurice Canady. The team did lose its first definitive starter on Sunday though, with fullback Jamize Olawale notifying the club he would join Guidry and Canady as one of only three Cowboys to sit out this year, sources confirmed to CBS Sports.

Olawale landed in Dallas by way of Oakland, having been traded by theRaidersto the Cowboys in 2018 along with a sixth-round pick in exchange for a fifth-round pick that same year. While having shown promise as a possible offensive option in his time with the Raiders, his two seasons with the Cowboys have been the polar opposite -- marred mostly by two drops that would've been walk-in touchdowns in key situations. He has been a resolute special teams player, however, and head coach Mike McCarthy has never been coy about carrying fullbacks in his offense.

The latter point plasters a question mark on how McCarthy will handle the absence of Olawale. He can either throw all of his chips into bringing undrafted rookie Sewo Olonilua up to speed as quickly as possible in a preseason-less camp, or he could experiment with an offense that doesn't require a fullback at all, which might give offensive coordinator Kellen Moore more freedom to generate plays in space for Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard.

If you didn't catch that hint, allow me to try again, this time throwing it with the passion of a Nolan Ryan fastball.

Going into 2020, the Cowboys truly have a chance to begin unleashing more two-halfback sets that utilize both Elliott and Pollard on the same play. As a first-year coordinator still learning the ropes (albeit in impressive fashion) and having to also learn how to best use Pollard in Year 1, Moore struggled to consistently field the rookie, often waxing and waning his snap count and targets over the course of the 2019 season. Having to factor in the use of Olawale played a part in the disruption(s), but with that being a non-issue in 2020 and Olonilua unlikely to instantly transcend from UDFA status to that of an NFL starter in only a matter of weeks -- and, again, without the benefit of preseason games to help aid in that cause -- it's a perfect time for Moore to get spicy with what could be a dynamic one-two punch in the Cowboys backfield.

In the instances where the team used the double halfback set last season, more often than not, it produced a gain in yardage. It's not difficult to see why -- considering how challenging it becomes for opposing linebackers to figure out if they should key in on Elliott or Pollard ahead of the snap. Add in some pre-snap motion/misdirection, and having both on the field at the same time truly does become nightmare material for defenses.

But wait, there's more, because once you toss in the wide receiver corps and tight end, the Cowboys could truly be faced with an embarrassment of riches.

While they've primarily been apt to operate with an 11 personnel setup (1 RB, 1 TE, 3 WRs), here's a chance to truly ramp up the 21 personnel (2 RBs, 1 TE, 2 WRs) with Pollard taking the place of Olawale, which would put Elliott and Pollard on the field at the same time as a playmaking tight end in Blake Jarwin with either a WR duo of Amari Cooper plus Michael Gallup, Michael Gallup plus CeeDee Lamb or CeeDee Lamb plus Amari Cooper. Digging deeper for a set they never use but should and now have the opportunity to, the team could also begin unveiling the 20 personnel more often (2 RBs, 0 TEs, 3 WRs), allowing McCarthy and Moore to put Elliott and Pollard on the field with Cooper, Gallup and Lamb, and daring the defense to cover five skill players who can do serious damage.

It's hard enough to stop one nuke, and it gets no easier when there are five pointing at you, not counting yet another prove-it year for Dak Prescott -- the motivated two-time Pro Bowler tasked with turning the keys.

It's all something for the Cowboys to seriously mull in training camp and the regular season, and would be a fantastic heel turn from the more hyper-conservative era of Jason Garrett and (mostly) Scott Linehan. In comparing Pollard's potential to what Olawale brings to the table, you'll quickly note there is no comparison at all. The latter has seven career touchdowns and 644 career yards from scrimmage, but none of those touchdowns are on his resume with Dallas, and McCarthy can't truly miss a player he's yet to actually coach. Additionally, the veteran fullback has only 13 receiving yards to go along with zero rushing yards for the Cowboys, so his main contributions truly have been on special teams, making his opt-out seemingly more of a dent in the rebuild of special teams coordinator John Fassel than to the offense.

That said, the Cowboys did pick up the contract option on Olawale this offseason, which is clear evidence McCarthy and Moore did at least have some sort of plan for him. Olawale signed a three-year deal in 2019 worth $5.4 million, and stood to hit the Cowboys cap for $1.7 million in 2020. He will instead receive a $150,000 stipend and no accrued season toward his contract expiration.

And what McCarthy and Moore just received is a chance to consistently deliver a 40 burger -- extra cheese.

Snap CEO Evan Spiegel: The Covid-19 pandemic has ‘laid bare the tremendous inequity in American society’ – CNBC

Covid-19 has exacerbatedlong-standing racial disparities in the U.S., data shows. The pandemic hasdisproportionately impactedpeople of color, particularly Black people, across the country and has highlighted years of health and social inequities.

It's "been very painful to watch," Snap co-founder and CEO Evan Spiegel said on the "How Leaders Leadwith David Novak" podcast on Thursday.

"The most important thing that Covid has done, in my opinion, is it has laid bare the tremendous inequity in American society and the failures of many of our systems," Spiegel told CNBC contributor Novak, "including our health system to take care of our citizens."

"That's been most obvious because the outcomes in other countries are very different.Other countries have been able to manage this crisis more effectively."

For example, "you see Black or Latinx people in our culture are dying at higher rates, and you see that the economic impact of Covid disproportionately impacts those people who are also dying at higher rates," Spiegel said.

Indeed, Black and Hispanic residents of the U.S. have been three times as likely to be infected with SARS-CoV-2 and nearly twice as likely to die from Covid-19 as white people, according to CDC data uncovered and reported by The New York Times.

"When you see the backdrop of racism that persists in our country today exacerbated by this situation, I think generally, it's a really important step for our country to take to at least see that this problem exists," Spiegel said.

"Unless we're willing to acknowledge this problem, unless we're willing to acknowledge this history, unless we're willing to acknowledge the inequities in our system today, it's going to be very difficult to fix them."

Spiegel's hope is that it will lead to change.

"I think even in the short term, while this is an excruciating period of time, I do think this event brings us closer to a country that embodies our values over the longer term," Spiegel said.

"I think the biggest thing that [Covid-19 has] done is really laid bare the inequities in our society and the failings of our country to take care of its citizens."

Spiegel is currently worth an estimated $4.53 billion, according to Bloomberg. According to Forbes, Spiegel has donatedabout $65 million in Snap stock. He and his wife,Miranda Kerr, along with The Snap Foundation, donated $10 millionfor Covid-19 relief in Los Angeles.

Spiegel and his Snap co-founder, Bobby Murphy, have pledged to donate 13 million shares of Snap stock to the foundation, whose "mission is to develop pathways to the creative economy for underrepresented youth in Los Angeles," according to its website.

Ethereum dived from the $417 swing high and traded below $350 against the US Dollar. ETH price is currently recovering above $375 and it is likely to climb back above $400.

After a strong rally above $350 and $400, Ethereum faced a significant bearish move against the US Dollar. A high was formed near $417 before the price tumbled (similar to bitcoin and ripple) below $400 and $350.

The price even spiked below the $330 support level and the 100 hourly simple moving average. However, it found a strong buying interest near $305 and $300. Ether recovered sharply above the $330 and $350 levels.

There was a break above the $365 and $370 levels. The price is now trading near the $385 resistance zone. It is close to the 50% Fib retracement level of the recent decline from the $416 swing high to $353 swing low. It seems like there is a key contracting triangle forming with resistance near $385 on the hourly chart of ETH/USD.

If ether price breaks the triangle resistance, it could test the $390 resistance. The 61.8% Fib retracement level of the recent decline from the $416 swing high to $353 swing low is also near the $392 level.

A successful break above the triangle resistance and $392 could open the doors for a fresh increase above the $400 level. In the mentioned case, the price is likely to rise towards the $415 and $420 levels in the coming sessions.

The triangle support is near the $378 level. If there is a bearish break below the triangle support, Ethereum could test the $365 support.

The next major support is near the $360 level and the 100 hourly SMA, where the bulls are likely to take a strong stand. Any further losses could lead the price towards the $300 handle.

Hourly MACD The MACD for ETH/USD is slowly moving in the bullish zone.

Hourly RSI The RSI for ETH/USD is now back above the 50 level.

EOS rallied by 5.07% on Monday. Following on from a 2.40% gain from Sunday, EOS ended the day at $2.8549.

It was a mixed start to the day. EOS rose to a mid-morning high $2.8151 before hitting reverse.

EOS broke through the first major resistance level at $2.7917 before sliding to a mid-afternoon intraday low $2.6445.

The reversal saw EOS fall through the first major support level at $2.6634 before making a move.

Finding support from the broader market, EOS rallied to a late intraday high $2.9351.

EOS broke through the first major resistance level at $2.7917 and the second major resistance level at $2.8671.

A final hour pullback saw EOS slide back through the resistance levels before recovering to $2.85 levels.

At the time of writing, EOS was up by 1.09% to $2.8859. A bullish start to the day saw EOS rise from an early morning low $2.8599 to a high $2.8878.

EOS left the major support and resistance levels untested early on.

EOS would need to avoid a fall through the $2.8115 pivot level to support a run at the first major resistance level at $2.9785.

Support from the broader market would be needed, however, for EOS to break out from Mondays high $2.9351.

Barring another extended crypto rally, the first major resistance level at $XXX would likely cap any upside.

Failure to avoid a fall through the $2.8115 pivot would bring the first major support level at $2.6879 into play.

Barring an extended sell-off, EOS should steer well clear of sub-$2.60 levels. The first major support level at $2.6879 should limit any downside.

Coming up against the second major resistance level at $330.12, Ethereum fell back to $311 levels before finding support.

Through the afternoon, Ethereum rallied to a late intraday high $334.34 before sliding back to $313 levels.

Ethereum broke through the first major resistance level at $320.74 and the second major resistance level at $330.12.

Finding late support, Ethereum broke back through the first major resistance level to deliver the upside on the day.

At the time of writing, Ethereum was up by 0.85% to $324.97. A bullish start to the day saw Ethereum rise from an early morning low $322.41 to a high $325.91.

Ethereum left the major support and resistance levels untested early on.

Finding support at the first major support level at $0.2101, Ripples XRP rallied to a late intraday high $0.22979.

Ripples XRP broke back through the first major resistance level at $0.2232 before sliding back to sub-$0.2230 levels.

Finding late support, however, Ripples XRP broke back through the first major resistance level to end the day at $0.224 levels.

At the time of writing, Ripples XRP was up by 0.75% to $0.22648. A bullish start to the day saw Ripples XRP rise from an early morning low $0.22429 to a high $0.22673.

NASA’s most advanced rover heads to Mars – UPI News

ORLANDO, Fla., July 30 (UPI) -- NASA launched the most advanced Mars rover yet -- with technology and tools to find signs of life on the Red Planet -- on Thursday morning from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.

The spacecraft that carries the Perseverance rover, which also is ferrying the first helicopter designed to fly on another planet, separated from its rocket just under an hour after the launch at 7:50 a.m. EDT.

The Atlas V rocket launched with "2.3 million pounds of thrust to take aim at Mars" and headed toward Mars at over 25,000 miles per hour, according to NASA and launch company United Launch Alliance.

NASA's rover now joins the United Arab Emirates' Hope orbiter and China's Tianwen-1 probe, which also includes a rover, on the trip to Mars this summer.

As with the other two missions, Thursday's launch begins a seven-month journey that will end at Mars in February. NASA predicts a Feb. 18 landing on Mars.

NASA officials said they had to adjust communication networks on Earth because the signal from the spacecraft was too strong at first, but otherwise the spacecraft's navigation system indicated it was on the right path.

Trajectory corrections

The agency has 15 days before it must make the first trajectory corrections, if needed, said Matt Wallace, NASA's deputy program manager for the mission.

Wallace noted that NASA overcame workplace restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic to make a deadline for launching this summer while Mars was close to the Earth's orbit.

"In dealing with pandemic, it really took the entire agency to step up and help us, and they didn't hesitate and they did it, and we really appreciate that," Wallace said.

The mission, like any trip to Mars, comes with a lot of risks, NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine said in a press conference in Florida on Wednesday.

"It's without question, a challenge. I mean we, there's no other way to put it, and it's not easy. ... That being said, we know how to land on Mars. We've done it eight times already," Bridenstine said.

This year's mission to Mars builds on the past discoveries made by rovers such as Spirit, Opportunity and Curiosity, which led NASA to conclude that conditions once existed to support life there.

"Mars 2020 is without question the most advanced mission to Mars, including the two other missions headed there this year from China and the United Arab Emirates," said Raymond Arvidson, professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis.

Arvidson has been involved in every Mars mission since Viking 1 landed on the Red Planet in 1976.

Top-notch instruments

"The instruments on board are unmatched, and the planned return of Martian soil and rock samples is also historic," Arvidson said.

The mission's primary goal is to study rocks at or just below the surface for signs that life existed, or still exists, on Mars, and to understand its geology better.

The rover also will collect rock samples for return to Earth during a future mission, but NASA said that could take 10 years to accomplish.

NASA announced the Mars 2020 rover mission in 2012, at an estimated cost of $1.5 billion, but the budget has swelled to $2.46 billion. Work on components started in 2017, and construction of the rover started to stream over a live webcam in June 2019.

The Atlas rocket carrying the rover had four solid-rocket strap-on boosters in addition to the main, first-stage booster. That is the same configuration used to launch NASA's Curiosity rover to Mars in 2011.

Mars 2020 and the Perseverance rover are scheduled to land at the large Jezero Crater amid that planet's Northern Lowlands. Scientists believe that once was home to a river delta.

The rover will select targets for rock samples, drive and operate for at least one Mars year, which is about two Earth years.

Besides its science and imaging instruments, the Perseverance rover also carries the Ingenuity helicopter strapped to its underside. The aircraft is powered by lithium-ion batteries that can recharge via solar panels.

Ingenuity is made up of a box carrying cameras and instruments, four spindly landing legs and two counter-rotating rotors. The rover will film the helicopter as it flies.

NASA describes Ingenuity as primarily an experiment to prove it can fly an aircraft on another planet and record images.

Ingenuity is considered a demonstration of a new technology, and NASA believes it could help to identify interesting targets for future Mars exploration. The helicopter's first flight is scheduled for two months after the rover lands.

Back in January, Robert Playter became the CEO of Boston Dynamics. It was a momentous occasion, marking the companys first new CEO since its founding in the early 1990s when the company was founded by Marc Raibert. The move came during what was already a transitional period for the company which is why we are excited to chat with him at Disrupt 2020.

Following its sale to Softbank, Boston Dynamics had recently begun early sales of Spot, its first commercial product. In April of last year, the company made its own acquisition, picking up Bay Area-based Kinema Systems to help design a visioning system for its own warehouse robotics like Handle.

Of course, much of this pre-dates the current COVID-19 pandemic, which has made automation and robotics an even more hot button issue than it has been in the years prior. Over the course of the last few months, Spot has been seen employed in a factotum of different jobs, as everyone from construction companies to health care facilities to baseball teams look to the quadrupedal robot for help.

Playter will be making his first public speaking engagement as CEO at our first online-only Disrupt this September. What are robots and what can they do?

Robots are machines that can carry out complex actions automatically. They generally need three elements: sensors such as cameras, lidar, or microphones; actuators such as motors, pistons or artificial muscles, and controllers.

Robots may be remotely controlled by humans, but frequently they are partially or fully controlled by computers, making them autonomous.

Robots in fiction frequently resemble us, looking quite humanoid in appearance with two arms, two legs and a head with cameras for eyes. But in reality, the vast majority of robot forms are designed to fit their function.

Your washing machine and dishwasher are both robots, performing complex actions under computer control. Many air-conditioning units are robots, changing fan settings, air deflectors, and switching from cooling to heating automatically.

All modern cars are robots, with computers adjusting engine settings, brakes, steering and suspension in response to your driving.

The more advanced autonomous cars are even starting to take over some of the driving from you.

The word robot derives from the Czech word robota, meaning forced labour, which was derived from the Proto-Slavic *orbota, meaning hard work or slavery.

In 1920, Karel apek introduced the word robot to the world in his play called Rossumovi Univerzln Roboti (Rossums Universal Robots) in which artificial organic humanoid robots were built, and subsequently became dissatisfied, leading to a robot revolution and ultimately the birth of a new robot society.

Similar storylines have been used in movies about robots ever since.

apeks robots were not mechanical, unlike ours today. But more recently the word robot or bot is also used in reference to software, for example a Web-crawling bot that trawls through websites collating information.

Given the original meaning and origin of the word, you have to wonder if one day an intelligent artificial entity will consider robot to be highly offensive and derogatory.

The field of robotics, and more broadly mechatronics, studies how best to design, build and control robots.

Its surprisingly difficult to make robots that work well. Information from sensors must be processed in real-time (if you cannot make sense of what you see quickly enough, then you either have to move very slowly, or you have to keep stopping to think).

More flexible robots such as robot arms in factories have many degrees of freedom (imagine an arm with five elbows as well as a shoulder and wrist joint). Such arms can be moved into billions of different twisty poses to enable them to reach into tricky places and weld components together.

Figuring out how best to control robot arms so that they do not hit anything (including themselves) is surprisingly hard, especially when obstacles may be moving around them. Thats why, despite all the amazing things artificial intelligence (AI) can do today, robot control is still considered one of the most difficult problems.

Its also why creating fully autonomous vehicles is a lot more difficult than most people realise!

The idea of automata has been around for thousands of years. These devices were mechanical representations of animals, birds and people, often designed to entertain the wealthy.

Ancient Chinese texts tell the story of a mechanical man presented to King Mu of Zhou (1023957 BCE) by the artificer Yan Shi. King Solomon, who reigned from 970 to 931 BCE, was said to have had a golden lion that raised a foot to help him to his throne, and a mechanical eagle that placed his crown upon his head. Hero of Alexandria (1070 CE) wrote an entire book about his automaton inventions, and how hydraulics, pneumatics and mechanics could be used.

Some of the first robots as we might recognise them today were built in the 1940s by neurologist and EEG pioneer Grey Walter in Bristol, UK. Since they looked a little like electric tortoises, he called them Elmer and Elsie (ELectro MEchanical Robots, Light Sensitive). These fully autonomous robots trundled about, attracted to light like moths, and automatically went back to charge themselves when their batteries became low.

Robots have contributed massively to our industries, enabling most devices, appliances, transportation and processed foods to be made efficiently and cheaply. Today researchers are working towards even greater automation, with robots taking over more and more of the manufacturing processes.

3D printing using additive manufacturing may enable complex components to be made, and it is the ambition of many industries to even automate the repair process of machines, with faults being detected before they cause failures, and new parts being made and swapped automatically.

Eventually, this could even lead to machines that can build themselves and repair themselves known as von Neumann machines (self-replicating machines) after the mathematician who imagined them back in the late 1940s.

In our homes, robots are likely to become more common. Robot vacuum cleaners and floor-moppers may become the norm instead of a luxury, although theyre unlikely ever to look like Rosey the Robot from the Jetsons. Robot kitchen arms to do your cooking might become common.

At present, there are no practical robot dusters, however!

The science fiction writer and professor of biochemistry, Isaac Asimov, wrote many early books about robots. (The movie I, Robot was based on his books, and his Foundation series is now being made for a new Apple TV series.)

He famously created three laws of robotics:

But while these laws were a fictional attempt to protect us from harm, they didnt really work as Asimovs own stories often demonstrated. Tell the robot, he is not a human being, or neglect to tell them that he is a human, or tell the robot that something else is a human being and all kinds of problems could happen.

Today, no robot uses these three laws. Instead, we have experts in AI, ethics and morals to help provide sensible guidelines for the creation and use of robots. Some researchers also hope to empower robots and give them the ability to judge ethical and moral consequences for themselves.

A Movie of the Evolving Universe Is Potentially Scary – Scientific American

After the COVID-19 rules about social distancing went into effect, I developed a morning routine of jogging through the woods near my home. During the first months, I focused on the green branches that stretch upward towards the sky, but recently I started to notice the debris of tree trunks lying on the ground. There are many such remnants, eaten by termites, rotting and ultimately dispersing into the underlying soil. A glimpse at the forest reveals a sequence of evolutionary phases in the history of trees that lived or died at different times.

The phenomenon happens in other contexts. For example, I recently completed a nine-year term as chair of the Astronomy Department at Harvard. And only now have I begun to notice the former chairs scattered around me, just like those tree trunks in the woods.

Entering a new stage of life can be humbling. We acquire a false sense of permanence from reviewing the frozen past, as if it were a statue that will never erode. But this view is shortsighted, since each moment can also be seen a new beginning, shaped by forces beyond our control and swirling on a grander scale.

Old-fashioned astronomy was also permeated by a false sense of permanence. Astronomers collected still images of the universe, creating the impression that nothing really changes under the sunor above it, either. But just like the revelation from my stroll through the woods, these snapshots showed stars and galaxies of different ages, at various evolutionary phases along their history. Computer simulations helped us patch together the full story by solving the equations of motion for matter, starting from the initial conditions imprinted on the cosmic microwave background at early cosmic times. By generating snapshots of an artificial cosmos similar to those captured by telescopes, these simulations unraveled our cosmic roots. The scientific insight that emerged is that the likely origins for our existence were quantum fluctuations in the early universe. Perhaps we should add Quantum Mechanics Day to our annual celebrations of Mothers Day and Fathers Day.

There are some missing pages in the photo album made up of our observations, however: the period known as the cosmic dawn, for example, when the first stars and galaxies turned on. These missing pages will be filled in the coming decade by the next generation of telescopes, such as the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), the ground-based "extremely large" telescopes and the Hydrogen Epoch of Reionization Array (HERA).

To reveal a more literal gap in the sky, the Event Horizon Telescope recently captured a still image of the silhouette of the black hole in the giant galaxy M87. The next goal is to obtain a sequence of images or a video, showing the time variability of the accretion flow around the black hole.

The tradition of still images makes sense when dealing with systems like galaxies, which evolve on a timescale of billions of years. But the universe also exhibits transient fireworks that flare up and dim during a human lifetime. Observing them is the motivation behind the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) on the Vera C. Rubin Observatory, which will have its first light soon. LSST will be a filming project, documenting nearly a thousand deep multicolor images per patch of the southern sky over a decade and recording the most extensive video of the universe ever taken with its plethora of transients in full glory.

Some of the LSST flares are expected to be the counterparts of gravitational wave sources detected by LIGO/Virgo or LISA. Their discovery will usher in multi-messenger astronomy based on both gravitational and electromagnetic waves emitted by the same sources, providing new insights about the central engines that power these transients. The related standard sirens could serve as new rulers for measuring precise distances in cosmology.

Within the Milky Way, transient events close to Earth could lead to catastrophe. A supernova explosion, for example, could cause a mass extinction on an unprecedented scale. If a meteor similar to the one that hit the unpopulated regions near Chelyabinsk in 2013 or Tunguska in 1908 hit New York City, it could cause a far larger death toll and economic damage than COVID-19. Or consider the impact of a blob of hot gas from the Sun, a so-called coronal mass ejection of the type that missed the Earth in 2012. Such an event could shut off communication systems, disable satellites and damage power grids. Altogether, astronomical alerts about such celestial threats could be crucial for securing the longevity of our species.

Of greatest relevance for our long-term survival is identifying large objects on a collision course with the Earth, similar to the Chicxulub asteroid that killed the dinosaurs 66 million years ago. In 2005, Congress passed a bill requiring NASA to find and track at least 90 percent of all near-Earth objects larger than 140 meters (enough to cause regional devastation) by 2020. Only a third of these objects have been identified in the sky so far. In a recent paper with my undergraduate student Amir Siraj, we explained some puzzling properties of the Chicxulub asteroid as a tidal breakup of a long-period comet that passed close to the sun. If future sky surveys alert us to another fragment whose apparent size grows rapidly against the sky, wed better have a contingency plan to deflect its trajectoryor else immediately call our realtor.

Keeping up with the challenge of precision cosmology for the next few decades can demonstrate that the Hubble constant, which describes the expansion rate of the universe, is not really a constant, in accordance with the expected Sandage-Loeb test. In the long run, the only thing that stays constant is change. The accelerated expansion of the universe under the influence of so-called dark energy will be the ultimate manifestation of extragalactic social distancing in the post-COVID-19 era, preventing any future contact between us and civilizations outside our galaxy.

L.A. Zoo’s lion soulmates euthanized together after age-related health problems – CTV News

Hubert and Kalisa were best friends for life.

The African lion duo spent many years together, never having cubs with each other but companions, nonetheless.

But on Thursday, their partnership came to an end. The Los Angeles Zoo made the decision to humanely euthanize the two lions, due to declining health and age-related illnesses.

"Hubert and Kalisa are an iconic part of the L.A. Zoo experience, and our staff and guests have been touched by their loyal companionship," Denise Verret, director of the L.A. Zoo, said in a statement. "Their longevity is truly a testament to the level of expert care our veterinary and animal care teams provide for our elderly animals. These lions will remain a positive part of our history, and they will be greatly missed."

Hubert, born Feb. 7, 1999, and Kalisa, born Dec. 26, 1998 spent six years together at the L.A. Zoo, and even more while at the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle.

The story of Blake Mycoskie starting TOMS Shoes is well known in entrepreneurial circles.While many would be content after building a half billion-dollar business, Blake is not one of them.After experiencing his own burnout after TOMS, Blake was inspired to start Madefor, a 10-month program where people learn a new habit or practice each month.We sat down to talk about the inspiration for Madefor and why this focus on well-being is more important than ever.

Dave Knox:With Madefor, you are in the middle of building your second business.What is the biggest lesson you took away from building TOMS that you are applying to Madefor?

Blake Mycoskie: I think the biggest thing that I took away is really when you're focused on building a business that has a big mission and specifically one that can serve so many people, it's really easy to build incredible culture in your company and attract amazing talent as a result. At first, when I was trying to put together this kind of dream team of scientists on human behavior, I thought it was going to be really challenging to do because they are very busy and get a lot of requests for their time and attention. But when we told them that our mission was to eliminate some of the suffering that comes from modern living, and use the science that they have studied in their lab to help people sleep better, and eat better, and feel better, and be more connected and more grateful, every single one of them just signed on immediately. So many of these scientists dedicated their lives to something very specific.How do you optimize the perfect night's sleep.How do you really declutter your life, both in your work life and in your personal life, in a way that frees your mind up to be more creative? Giving them the opportunity to get that science out of their labs and into the hands of people in a way that they can not only learn these habits, but more importantly, sustain them, everyone jumped on. I think I learned that because that was the same case with TOMS, when we said," We're going to sell shoes so that we can give shoes to children in need," we had some of the top talent in the country join the company. I think having a big mission and especially one that hits home is an incredible way to build the necessary talent for a new startup.

Knox:Building a company is a roller coaster. What was the impetus that had you want to jump back on and build a second venture?

Mycoskie:After spending over a decade building TOMS to a half a billion- dollar business and giving 96 million children's shoes, I felt pretty dang content with the entrepreneur business aspect of my life. I wasn't really thinking that I was going to jump back into a startup or a business, at least until my kids went to college. But what happened was is I had a deeply profound, personal experience that radically changed my life, and my mental health, and my wellbeing, and my physical health, and so much so that my only response out of the gratitude from my experience was to share this with as many people as possible. In doing that, I developed this Madefor program, which is a 10- month program where people learn a new habit and practice, one a month for 10 months. And they are the exact habits and practices I learned from some of the top scientists in the world. I just felt like I had to share it, and that turned into a new business.

Knox:How did you go about finding those experts and the habits that inspired Madefor in the first place?

Mycoskie:I was on this journey to really learn from the best minds in science, around how people would really live their best life, who's really flourishing and why, and most particularly why I wasn't feeling that way. I had all the kind of markers of success, an incredible business, helped millions of kids around the world, a great family and friends. But in 2017, I found myself quite burned out and actually diagnosed with mild depression. As I looked deep into it, what I recognized was there were a lot of these basic things from a physical and mental and even purposeful level that I kind of put on the back burner when I was charging and working so hard in building TOMS. And at that same time, I met a gentleman who ultimately became my business partner, named Pat Dossett, and he was a Navy Seal for nine years and had a very specific focus on after his time on the teams of really human potential and flourishing. When I talked to him about some of my own struggles, he and I together, agreed to reach out to the scientific community. The first person we reached out to was a neuroscientist at Stanford named Andrew Huberman who really opened our eyes to this idea of a fixed mindset versus growth mindset, and how the neuroplasticity in your brain can allow you to learn and sustain new habits that will make a huge difference in your life, no matter how old you are. The other thing that Andrew really helped us do is identify the other top scientists studying really critical habits like human connection, gratitude, breath work, sleep, all around the country. We just went on this one-year-long research and experimentation phase where we not only tested these practices on ourselves, but really learned from these scientists. Ultimately, after doing extensive research for over a year, we found that there weren't 12 things, there were only 10. So the Madefor program is only 10 months. And with those 10 things, we spend a lot of time testing on ourselves and with beta groups to really understand what is the proper order. And the order is really set to coincide with neuroplasticity and how you can not only learn but sustain these habits. Some people would say they sequentially get harder. I actually think that you are just priming your brain so that you can take on different ones in the order that they go. But ultimately, they end with helping all of our members answer this question that I believe all of us answer or want to answer at some point in our life, and that is what am I made for? And that's where the name Madefor comes from.

Knox:One of the most fascinating parts of the program is the fact that while everything in the world is going digital, you guys chose to go analog. What drove that choice?

Mycoskie:The answer is science. My business partner, Pat Dossett, is the most non- bullshit guy you'll ever meat. He is just allergic to anything that feels like a fad, or a trend, or anything like that. While there are huge trends in using digital devices to tell us our heart rates and our sleep and all of these things, what the science showed was it is extremely difficult to learn and sustain a new habit if you're constantly digitally distracted. We decided to make our program completely analog by sending you a kit once a month. And in that kit, you are going to learn one basic thing. Now, these are not crazy, bio-hacking, out-there stuff. This is stuff like, how can you absolutely know that you're doing everything possible, in a very simple way, to optimize and get the perfect amount of sleep? The right amount of deep sleep and the right amount REM sleep where you are looking at how do you wake up feeling more refreshed than you've ever felt in your life? And why, scientifically is that so important for your longevity and your mental clarity, and your mood? The thing is, is we decided that it was going to be more expensive, and it was going to take more time, but ultimately we're all about effectiveness. And the most effective way to help someone learn a new habit or practice and sustain it is to eliminate the digital distraction from the program. Once you sign up, there's very little digital interaction beyond that, and everything that you need comes in the box each month. In that box, we have the curated science. We take literally decades of science and curate it to about a 25 minute read that has been written by an incredible writer, who really can distill complex science into a very easy to understand concepts. The second thing is either one or two tools that Madefor has designed specifically for helping you adopt and learn that habit. And then the third thing in the box is your challenge card and your accountability measures so that you can really stay on-track during the month, as you learn that new habit and practice.

Knox:As you launched the business, what do you find is the spark for somebody signing up for Madefor?

Mycoskie:I think at some point, just like my own journey, is you need some form of a pain point. I don't think it necessarily needs to be a huge pain point like I was experiencing, mild depression and burnout, but it kind of is one of those things where you wake up one day and you're like," You know what? I really just don't sleep as well as I did when I was in my twenties, and it's getting worse as I get older. I don't really know what to do about it." Or," I always am dependent on that double espresso shot in the afternoon to give me energy and something innately just doesn't feel right on that. I feel like I'm running my adrenals and that's going to catch up with me." Or," I've been working so hard as an entrepreneur, or a CEO, or an executive that I've really lost touch with some of my closest friends. I really want to understand how that human connection and what are some very simple but effective ways that don't take a lot of time, but maybe will help me feel more connected, and that might help me feel better in my life?" It's all these little things that lead. It's usually not a big thing. We're trying to get to people early. The thing is, if we can help people develop these strong baselines that will really make them feel great and help them mentally and physically, and connect them more, and help them sleep better, and help their bodies move better, and get rid of those aches and pains, if we can do that, then they're less likely to go down this path of having what I would call a real mental health crisis.

Knox:With TOMS and now Madefor, your focus is on sparking positive change.What advice do you give to people on their companies authentically making a difference and not having it come off like a marketing play?

Mycoskie:I think so many companies and CEOs get this totally wrong, to be honest. You already kind of answered the question by using the word authentic. That word gets thrown around a lot, so I am sometimes hesitant to use it, but truly I haven't found a better word that better describes how a company can integrate a cause or a mission into their business. It has to be authentic. Usually, the way it is most authentic is if it comes from a personal experience that the CEO or the founder had. So obviously TOMS, I saw many children who were suffering from not having shoes in South America, and that personal story is what led to the initial growth of TOMS, and so many people connecting to the brand and the one- for- one movement. Now, my experience with having some burnout and dealing with the challenges of modern living and looking to science to help me feel better, is how we can authentically share that our mission is taken from a personal experience that wants to be shared with the world. And so that's the exact same type of situation. I really think that it's so critical that there's that personal story, that personal connection, from the leader of the organization, if you're going to integrate a cause or a mission into your business.

4-ingredient lazy meals that are healthy and still delicious – ABC News

Had a long day of homeschooling or working from home? Instead of hopping in the car and hitting the drive-thru, these two four-ingredient recipes offer quick, simple and healthy options to fast food.

Registered dietitian Dawn Jackson Blatner joined "Good Morning America" to help turn lazy day "cooking" into "putting together" meals that taste good and are good for you.

"You can have a balanced and nutritious meal on your plate ASAP," said Blatner, whose motto is "healthy living, hold the boring."

Here, she shares recipes for kale pizza and an egg roll bowl.

Yield: 1 serving

Ingredients:

2 teaspoons olive oil

2-4 kale leaves, stemmed and chopped (about 2 cups)

1 garlic clove, minced

1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes

One 10-inch sprouted whole grain tortilla

1/4 cup marinara sauce (no added sugar/mostly tomatoes)

1/4 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

Directions:

In a 10-inch skillet, heat the oil over medium heat. Add kale, garlic and crushed red pepper. Cook, stirring so the garlic doesn't burn, for about 4 minutes, until the kale is wilted. Transfer the kale to a plate and set aside.

Wipe the skillet to remove the oil and set it back over medium heat. Add the tortilla and heat until the bottom is crisp, 3-4 minutes. Flip it over so the crisp side is up.

Spoon on some marinara, put on the kale and cheese. Cook for another 3-4 minutes until the cheese starts to melt & the bottom of the tortilla is crisp.

Nutrition (1 pizza): 380 calories, 21g total fat, 34g carbs, 8g fiber, 16g protein

Ingredients:4 oz. of grilled chicken, chopped cup of brown rice2 cups of coleslaw mix2 tablespoons of sesame ginger dressing (coconut aminos or soy sauce, rice vinegar, toasted sesame oil, ginger, garlic)

Directions:Start with organic ground chicken sauted with coconut aminos (or soy sauce), rice vinegar, toasted sesame oil, fresh grated ginger, fresh chopped garlic, and salt and pepper to taste.

Once the chicken is fully cooked, mix in some handfuls of eggroll veggies: shredded coleslaw mix, shredded purple cabbage, shredded multicolored carrots, chopped green onion and cook until they all soften a bit. Time saver: Buy bags of pre-shredded coleslaw, purple cabbage and carrots.

Next, fill a bowl with more of the fresh egg roll veggies to add some crunch and a little brown rice for some whole grains. Top it all off with the chicken, and sprinkle on some green onions and a sesame ginger dressing.

Do you prefer eating a fresh fruit or do you like juicing it? The practice of juicing fruits and vegetables may be preferred when you want a detox or simply when you trying to cut back on your calorie intake. But, it may not be the best thing to do. Juicing fruits and vegetables robs them of their fibre and antioxidants. Nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar, in a recent Insta post, elaborates on the reason she is against juicing and the few times that the practice should be preferred.

According to Diwekar, it is okay to juice fruits in the following three cases:

Citing the example of plums, she goes on to add how that there are always a few plums that get squeezed or "pachko", as she calls it, when you buy a bunch of them. These squeezed plums are usually the ones which no one wants to eat, irrespective of the fact that they are still safe for consumption and are juicy, but fall out of flavour.

To juice or not to juice - It's the season of plum and we celebrated it with a glass of plum juice today. But aren't juices unhealthy?' Read on - When you buy fresh plums, you invariably have some which pachko. And when they do, no one wants to eat them. They are still good, safe and juicy but fall out of favour. What do you do then? Well, you simply channelize the grandmother inside you, and you squash the whole thing into a juice. Because pran jaye but food wastage na hoye. And you quickly drink together as a family before it discolours. Because fresh fruit, rich in antioxidants, will discolour within few minutes of air exposure. (Fruit going bad is a good sign). On the other hand, bottled juices in cafes, tetra-packs, detox packages, spas, etc., are only business as usual. These juices don't go bad which means they are not good to begin with. They are simply monetising the narrative that a juice is healthy. But, for a big section of the population, even the freshest juice is not. E.g. for people with diabetes, PCOD, obesity, heart disease, etc., it can quickly upset blood sugar regulation and deprive them of essential nutrients that would otherwise be available with proper chewing of fresh fruit/ vegetable. To summarise, juicing is fine only in the following cases 1. When it prevents food wastage for the family 2. When someone is having a tough time to chew 3. This is one situation where there is no harm in juicing plums or any other fruit. Not only will it prevent food wastage, it will also provide you with some nutrients from the fruit, without any artificial flavour or sugar.

The same cannot be said for bottled juices in cafes or tetra pack juices of detox juices. Not only do they contain added colour and flavour, they are also loaded with sugar (even if they claim to be healthy).

Even the freshest juice is not healthy for people with diabetes, PCOD, obesity and heart disease among others, informs Diwekar. The "can quickly upset blood sugar regulation and deprive them of essential nutrients that would otherwise be available with proper chewing of fresh fruit/ vegetable," she explains in her post.
