To give myself a vacation, I sent my phone on a trip – The Boston Globe

The woman eyed me suspiciously over her mask, and picked up her tape gun just in case.

My phone is in this box, and since its not quite safe to take an actual vacation, Im trying to give my brain one by sending my phone on a trip cross-country, I explained. Id like it to go ground, so it can see America. Have you read Kerouac?

I could sense the clerk was trying to decide if I was dangerous or just dumb, so I quickly paid my $31.85 it turns out its weirdly complicated and expensive to make a package travel slowly and hustled through the glass doors with a pep in my step.

What would I do with myself now that I was no longer a cyborg hooked permanently to most of the worlds knowledge and every one of its complaints?

That question was still going through my mind as I arrived at my house a few minutes later and immediately got on my computer to check my e-mail and Google Did I miss anything?

It always takes time to settle into a vacation, and when I awoke the following morning I instinctively reached for my phone in its usual place on the nightstand. Instead I felt the strangest thing: a book.

The book did not have a built-in clock, so I went to my kitchen, looked at the time on the microwave, then kinda stood there trying to remember what we did in the mornings in the 20th century. I think maybe we milked animals.

I resisted the urge to go on my computer or turn on the television, so I opened that book thing and began to read. This lasted for nearly three pages before my attention span wore out. But I remembered that I owned many more books that I had also not read, so I went to my shelves and started pulling down volumes. The new me was going to be so much better than the old me, I promised myself. And this was only the beginning; ahead of me were days and days of such lies.

This included the vow that I would spend more quality time with my family. Which I did, if you count my children hovering around me and repeating the phrase You just keep using mamas phone when Id ignore their requests for ridiculous things like my undivided attention or food.

I only use her phone when its something important, Id correct them as I checked the weather and the latest memes.

To truly feel the freedom, then, I had to go out into the world, alone. My wife dropped me at the beach one day so she could have a vacation from me, and I had to stay there until she picked me up at a specified time and place. A specified time and place! It was like the 90s.

Another time I went to the grocery store alone, armed only with a printed list. I felt as vulnerable and exposed to the world as someone climbing Mount Everest. Normally, Id be able to text my wife constant questions like: What is okra? Instead, I had to ask for the help of other humans. Other humans!

I survived. But it was moments like those that taught me what it truly meant to live phone-less in the modern world. It was not zen. It was not the key to being more present. It did not make all the bad news and Kardashians disappear.

No, it was about being a chore to everyone else in your life. Not a single day went by where my experiment did not create a headache for someone else. This included strangers. Picture me walking up to you in a mask and shouting: Is this okra?

I had thought the experiment would end with me quitting my smartphone forever. At the very least, I thought Id trade it in for a flip phone. Instead, it forced me to accept that my phone is both the cause of my issues and the only thing that cures them.

My phone returned on a Thursday. It had been gone for 11 days. Where had it traveled? I have no idea. Id strapped it to a giant battery pack so I could track its movements. But like everything else to do with this experiment, that had failed almost immediately, at a truck stop somewhere in central Pennsylvania. And if theres anything sadder than realizing you cant live without your phone, it is central Pennsylvania.

Hopefully my phone went on to more exciting places. Hopefully I will too, when all this is over. In the meantime, Ill be dumb-thumbing my way through the Internet, searching for another answer.

Its probably on page four of one of these books. Too bad Ill never get that far.

10 New Things You Need To Know About The Flash Movie – Animated Times

Flash Might not be the strongest but definitely, the fastest of all the Superheroes. Ironically his movie is taking the longest time to release. Due to Justice League, this movie became the center of all the controversies. There are Number changes in the film starting from the scriptwriters to the Directors. Not only this, but there were also rumors that this movie production has halted for a period. A few days back, Warner Bros. revealed the dates for The Flash movie. 3rd June 2022, but The trailer has not released yet.

Here are the ten things You need to know if you are a Flash fan

According to the comic version of Flashpoint, there was a battle between the Aquaman and Wonder Woman. The War Zone was created by Barry Only. According to reports, there will be no sort of conflict between the Aquaman ( kingdom Atlantis) and wonder woman( kingdom) in the movie. So, We are not going to see Gal Gadot and Jason Momoa for the role of wonder woman and Aquaman, respectively.

It is quite disheartening for the fans. We can see the positive side, that DC extended Universe can focus on the lead hero Flash.

After the Justice League Movie, there were many rumors related to the casting of The Flash, but till now, the only confirmed one is Ezra Miller as Barry Allen. A few months back, the film director Andres Muschietti said that the few casts from the justice league would be in The Flash.

In a recent Tevlesion shoot scene, Barry said that I told Victor this was possible.

So who is this Victor? Is it, Cyborg? Fans took it to Twitter and believed that they might see Ray Fischer in Cyborgs role again.

Kiersey Clemons was set her debut film in the movie Justice League, though scenes were removed and. Kiersey had played the role of Iris West, who had an ideal attachment towards Barry Allen. The turning point was when the director got changed from Rick Famuyiwa to Andrs Muschietti due to some creative issues with the production team.

According to the reports ofThe Illuminerdi, now DC extended Universe is planning for a new person to portray the character of Iris West Somewhere aged between 21-25, who characterized as a brave and Intelligent reporter. The news of Iris West in DC is confirmed, but will it be an African-Woman?

As we have seen Candice Patton in the role of Iris West so it likely to be DC will continue the same pattern. Still, there is no official news regarding who will be playing the role of Iris West.

It was quite unbelievable for the fans when it announced that Jeffery would not be there in The Flash movie, and instead, we will see Michael Keaton for the role of Batman. ( After more than 30 years). Jeffery played the role of Thomas Wayne in Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice. Recently Jeffery joked that it was Michael Keaton who took away his part.

In the movie, Barry Allen will create a Multiverse to go back in time to save her mother from death. There he will meet with Thomas Wayne and Martha Wayne as Batman and Joker. Rumors are confirming that we will see Michael Keaton in the role of Batman, and if it continues, we may also see him in the Bat-Girl movie.

Recently the social media, including Twitter, Outraged with anger when a video has gone viral Where Ezra was pushing a female to the grounds and choking her out. The rage spread like fire in public demanding they do not want Ezra in The Flash. The anger was also justified.DC doesnt want the Franchise hero to go around in public and create troubles. Considering he played a significant role in the fantastic beast, it is still in Dileammna about his future in the franchise.

To prove his father is not guilty and save his mother, Barry will go back in the past. Barry wanted to show that the murder done by none other than reverse Flash, and he was the real culprit. Going back in time indicates that Barry is breaking the law of nature by altering the future. So we might see several changes in the new world of DCEU. Maybe a complete restart.!

Batman was the savior and protector of Gotham City. When it comes to the Superhero suit in DCEU, Batman has the best suit among all the others.

There are gossips that the suit will be similar to theKingdom ComeBatman Costume. We might see a vintage Batsuit in the movie. Dceu partisans are all set to compare it with the Ben Affleck Batman and Superman Batsuit.

When it comes to Flash, the no. of writers is uncountable. There were many controversies with the writer and the production team. The first writer and director were Grahame-Smith, and now the current Director is Andy Musrettti. Due to so many group changes, we may find various alterations in the movie at multiple scenes.

The last thing for the people who are eagerly waiting for this movie is that shooting will begin soon after Ezra completes his work with the Fantastic Beast team. Filming will most probably start in the early-mid of 2021 and hopefully going to release on the promised date, 3rd June 2022. However, there are no words of Honour for the shooting years due to the ongoing Corona Virus Pandemic.

According to Hofmann: Sage against the machine | According To Hofmann – Uniontown Herald Standard

I didnt want to write yet another column about my ongoing belief that computers are going to take us over like I learned from movies like The Terminator, The Matrix and Throw Momma From the Train, but please keep in mind that the machines were the ones forcing my hand (well, both hands since I type) to write about just that.

Their latest attempt is to take away our thoughts.

Okay, maybe I presented my conclusion too soon, so let me reel that back before the nice young men in their clean, white coats come to take me away.

I guess it all started with the auto-correct feature that exists on various word processor programs, search engines and cellphones.

You start typing a word or even a sentence, and the computer tries to figure out what word youre typing like its a constant guessing game that only the computer is playing.

Id love to try some of your a[arsenic?] ap[apes?] app[appendages?] appl[appliances?] apple[apples? Its apples. We knew it all along!].

Like most people who are lazy, I welcomed the computer-generated suggestions as it kept me from extra typing, saving me time to reflect on what I wrote and even more time to realize what I wrote makes me sound even more like a drooling dunce.

However, I then noticed my email starting to act fun[funky, right?] no! funny.

It seems email programs are adding new help features every other week, starting with suggested replies at the push of a button.

If you dont know what I mean, the next time you reply to an email or a text message, youll see there may be a few choices displayed around where your text is to appear. If you click on one of the choices, that will be your answer, saving you from typing it.

The problem I found with that is whenever someone who knows me sends me a message, theyre not expecting me to respond with the generic, lame answers the program provides. Normally, I reply with a snarky comment or a statement of self-flattery. I know, right? Thats surprisingly humble of me.

For example, if someone texts me a dirty joke, chances are Im not going to reply with LOL or I enjoy your humorous anecdote or My sympathies to the nun who walks into a bar.

It goes without saying theres no good computer-generated option to fit ones personality unless you are a cyborg, but it goes with saying that the computers provided replies cant fit into 92% of conversations.

To better illustrate, I conducted an experiment where I sent messages to myself and tried to answer with all the answers provided.

MARK ONE: Can you sit on a cactus for me, please?

MARK TWO: Of Course! You bet! What kind?

MARK ONE: Lets go with the Jumping Cholla cactus The barbs are hollow and when they make contact with the moisture of someones skin, they actually curve and lock into place underneath the top layer of epidermis. Its really painful.

MARK TWO: Sounds good. Sounds good to me. Perfect!

MARK ONE: So, how did it feel sitting on that cactus?

MARK TWO: Pretty good. It was fine. Not bad.

It says in the Bible that laziness brings on a deep sleep...unless you have curved cactus barbs in your rump because you were too lazy to type a negative response to your psychotic friend.

The whole thing even jumped to social media where, the other day, I was responding to a post informing me that mean people suck with an emoji of a devil face sticking out its tongue because I happen to be mean and take delight in mocking such posts.

However, when I went to reply, a row of emoji faces popped up and what did I see? A hand expressing thumbs up, balloon letters spelling out You Go, Girl!, a frowny face, a crying face and a unicorn farting a rainbow.

The computers didnt even give us time to get comfortable with them telling us how to speak and think and moved on to tell us how to feel!

Thats why we have to fight these software programs with sarcastic cleverness at every turn and not settle for their easy answers as our thoughts and our feelings are at stake!

If we dont, then we will regret no[nothing, because Im just kidding. LOL! Thank you! Sounds great! Have a nice day! You, too!]

ShareRing Uses Blockchain To Solve Self Sovereign Identity And Proof Of Health Simultaneously – Forbes

Proof of Health to Travel

As the lockdown wears on and travel and tourism, a USD$9 trillion industry in 2019, continue to be restricted, ShareRing is one company that has been innovating to use blockchain technology to solve the issue. ShareRing is a platform that wants to take the hassle out of travel, with its all-inclusive travel app for both businesses and consumers led by CEO and Founder Tim Bos along with the other 5 founders including Jane Sadler-Kidd. The team recognized the potential to disrupt the fragmented sharing economy with blockchain technology and launched an enterprise-ready blockchain geared towards the travel, sharing and on-demand economies. According to Kidd ShareLedger is a custom-designed, immutable blockchain database built on top of the Tendermint blockchain. Its fast, highly scalable and extremely flexible compared to existing platforms such as Ethereum.

Imagine stepping off the plane and knowing all your travel needs can be securely booked and managed from your phone. No more juggling handing over passports, travel documents or bank cards. ShareRings travel app will create a more cohesive customer experience by bringing all the necessary activities and bookings into one ecosystem, including hotel check-ins, flights, visa and tourist applications, Covid-19 tests, self-sovereign digital identity cards, mobile wallets, payment solutions and vehicle rentals.

They are also launching the world's first anonymous contact-tracing passport that can be integrated with e-visa on arrival systems (eVOA), travel insurance companies, airlines, hotels and retail shops. While contact-tracing applications have undergone harsh scrutiny since the pandemic began, with studies showing many tracing applications lack adequate security, are manual and expensive to execute. ShareRings self-sovereign identity storing model overcomes the major hurdle of securing data integrity by ensuring data privacy through anonymous distributed ledger cryptography.

Travelers Proof of Health is tied safely to a QR code which is scanned by airports, hotels or shops to reveal the status of their test, allowing for more freedom of movement and interaction with customers. Identity information is never stored on the blockchain and cannot be altered, preventing falsification and fraud where other contact tracing apps had third party storage of data. According to Kidd When someone signs up for a ShareRing ID, we take their photo, video selfie, name, DOB, address, etc and store it in an encrypted file that never leaves the users device. We also take a fingerprint of the data and documentation and store that on the blockchain. The file is encrypted with your public key, so only you can access it. You can also back it up to your Google Drive, or other cloud storage. If any information is changed it will not be recognized by the blockchain and the user will be forced to recreate their ShareRing ID. When you use one of our services like the COVID-19 app, the app will send only the necessary information to the government (anonymously) to allow others to be notified if they have been in contact with you. This is critical while many governments are considering mandating, and some have, health certificates in order to ease lockdown measures and re-open borders and struggling economies safely. As Kidd explains We have designed this application with government, tourism and health regulator requirements in mind. Our Covid-19 passport is perfectly suited to their standards, very low-cost, built to be easily integrated into any application, and encourages adoption among the population by building it in a way that provably safeguards their privacy. This should enable them to safely screen travelers and keep their essential workers protected in the event of an outbreak.

The app is part of a broader ecosystem of blockchain products the company has built. ShareRings application has already been integrated with more than 2.6 million hotel and activity providers around the world and they already have a sharing marketplace removing middlemen like Uber and AirBnb. SharePay is their stablecoin which 'hides' the confusion of cryptocurrency from the end-user. The payment of services and goods between user and service provider will be made in SharePay.

The Blue House Is Taking Initiatives To Position South Korea As A Blockchain Hub – Forbes

Cheongwadaealso known as the Blue House for its blue roofis the official residence and executive office for the President of South Korea. In a bid to overcome the crises, South Korean President Moon Jae-in addressed business leaders from 9 key industries. In an unofficial translation on the Office of the President, President Moon Jae-in said, For its part, the Government will strive to nurture future technology professionals while supporting Korean companies efforts to innovate. We are expediting the training of experts in such new industrial areas as artificial intelligence, big data, blockchain technology, future cars, drones, intelligent robots, smart ships and biomedicine.

I am confident that if businesses, the Government and the people all join forces, we will be able to surmount the industrial crisis caused by COVID-19 and be reborn as a powerhouse in an era of the digital economy, said President Moon Jae-in. In light of global economic uncertainty, Korea is taking ample measures to foster blockchain innovationnot only from a legislative stancebut also from a progressive stance towards cryptocurrencies as a whole.

A short background of Koreas viewpoint

South Korea was not always pro-crypto and this can be traced back to the crypto bull run of 2017. During the bull run, a large percentage of South Koreans invested, in so much that, South Korea became one of the biggest markets for bitcoin. The term bitcoin zombies emergedreferring to people addicted to checking the price of bitcoin.

When the bull market took a massive dive in 2018, many South Koreans lost a lot of moneyand some even lost their houses in the process. It didnt take too long for the Korean government to intervene and blacklist ICOs. Government intervention was also likely to be largely influenced by other cultural aspects, such as:

Suicide: According to the World Health Organization, South Korea has the fourth-highest suicide rate in the world.

Gambling: South Korea is home to 23 casinos. By law, only one casino is available for South Koreans to gamble, located in a remote area in the countryside.

Given that cryptocurrencies are high-risk volatile investments, plus factor in high suicide rates and the South Korean governments conservative attitudes towards gamblingthen, it becomes easier to see why the South Korean government was anti-crypto. Fast forward to 2019, Korea began introducing new regulations and has since changed its stance on crypto.

Regulations on virtual assets

The South Korean government has been working with local blockchain advocates to help introduce more concrete legislation surrounding the treatment of virtual assets. Simon Kim, CEO of proprietary blockchain venture fund Hashed, is one such advocate. Hashed is a significant backer of Asian blockchain projects including Klaytn and Terra. Kim is a director of the Korea Blockchain Association and is also involved in government initiatives around cryptocurrency regulation.

In an interview, Kim told me that the Korean Financial Services Commission does not regulate proprietary funds (a fund that invests with their own capital) in the same way that the SEC regulates US-based venture fundsproprietary funds are not required to submit periodic fillings via the FSC, Form Ds or disclose their information to the public. Depending on a funds registration status, it can either be launched under the FSC; or the Ministry of SMEs and Startups (MSS). However, publicly listed companies are required to submit similar information to that of U.S. companies and disclose periodic filings.

July 2020, saw the rollout of a new tax ruling that will tax gains on cryptocurrency at a rate of 20%. Kim also advised the government in the drafting of a March bill that ensures Korea complies with FATF guidelines regarding virtual assets (VAs) and virtual asset providers (VASPs). This includes legal definitions, and the requirement of virtual asset service providers such as cryptocurrency exchanges to report to the Financial Intelligence Unit.

Speaking of the move towards a more regulated blockchain landscape for Korea, Kim said Although lack of clear regulation brought certain freedoms, it has ultimately been a bottle neck for blockchain related businesses in Korea. The new regulations mark a fresh beginning for Korea as it takes its first step to create a more hospitable environment for VAs and VASPs.

Kim also believes that this approach is helping Asia to spearhead blockchain innovation, in comparison with the often draconian approach of the US SEC. He added: While western projects such as Telegrams TON have been cancelled and Facebooks Libra delayed, Asian platforms have successfully launched and continue to onboard users. Among these are Samsungs blockchain integration into its Galaxy smartphones, and Terras Chai mobile payment initiative.

The one-step model

The South Korean government has also been experimenting with various blockchain legislative initiatives. In April last year, the government set up 14 special regulation-free zones with 84 regulation-related exceptions. Out of these zonesthe Busan crypto regulation-free zone, modeled after the Swiss town of Zugrepresented a major shift in government attitude towards cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology. However, this didnt come without speculation, with some accusing the government of choking innovation.

In relation to these special regulation-free zones, President Moon Jae-in said earlier this year, Now tests related to such new industries as telemedicine, blockchain and the hydrogen economy can be conducted, and innovative industries are being created through the strengths of provincial areas.

This month, Haeundae Beachone of the most popular locations in the Busan crypto regulation-free zoneis expected to begin accepting crypto payments such as bitcoin and ethereum for watersport fans. The intention is to turn Haeundae Beach into a crypto beach, however, these plans are likely to be delayed as the Busan area was recently hit hard with an intense monsoona common occurrence during the months of July and August.

Furthermore, President Moon Jae-in went on to say that, The Government will further accelerate regulatory innovation while enhancing the strengths of local areas through decentralization. In regards to decentralization, the South Korean government proposed an amendment to the Local Autonomy Act, that if passed, will transfer administrative authority from central to local governments in these special regulation-free zones.

The decentralization experiment has been dubbed as a one-step model. The idea behind itif there is a mechanism for compromise in place that supports small concessions to take a large step forwardthen this will lead to a breakthrough in regulatory innovation. In light of this one-step model, last month, the South Korean government revealed that it granted the South Korean province Gyeongbuk, a permit to run a Special Industrial Hemp Free Zone. The zone will allow the province to industrialize medical hemp on the blockchaina major shift from conservative thinking to progressive.

The global race for CBDCs

In response to Chinas CBDC, the U.S, Australia, the Philippines, the European Central Bank, and many other countries are now considering rolling out CBDCs. This may bode well for crypto; however, not all are in agreement. Some have speculated that central bank digital currencies have nothing to do with cryptocurrenciesand are just a solution for a cashless society.

The Bank of Korea (BOK) originally had no interest in creating a Korean central bank digital currency (CBDC). Since then, it has now changed its tune. In March this year, the BOK began reviewing the issuance of a Korean CBDC and is now working on a 22-month pilot scheme that will see a build and test of the CBDC pilot system in 2021.

With economic uncertainty, inflation concerns, quantitative easing, governments racing towards CBDCs in reaction to the looming Chinese digital Yuanwhen looking to the future, how will the 2020s be remembered: As COVID-19; the black swan stock market crash; a global currency war; or the golden era of bitcoin?

Virgin Galactic partners with Rolls-Royce as it looks to build an aircraft for supersonic air travel – CNBC

Space tourism venture Virgin Galacticannounced it signed an agreement with Rolls-Royce to develop an aircraft for supersonic travel, giving a first look on Monday of the coming vehicle's design.

Supersonic travel is a long-term bet for Virgin Galactic, which has been developing reusable spacecraft capable of sending people on short trips to the edge of space for more than a decade.

Virgin Galactic said it completed a mission concept review alongside NASA of its supersonic vehicle design and now will work with the Federal Aviation Administration to create a framework for certifying the aircraft for flight. Previously Boeing's venture arm invested $20 million in Virgin Galactic, specifically toward helping the company build a supersonic aircraft.

"We have made great progress so far, and we look forward to opening up a new frontier in high speed travel," Virgin Galactic chief space officer George Whitesides said in a statement.

British aerospace company Rolls-Royce has a notable history making aircraft engines, including having built the engines that powered the supersonic Concorde aircraft.

The initial supersonic design targets Mach 3, or three times the speed of sound, using a delta-wing aircraft. Virgin Galactic said the aircraft would be capable of carrying between 9 and 19 passengers and would cruise at an altitude above 60,000 feet.

While Virgin Galactic's current focus is on its space tourism business, Wall Street analysts point to the potential its supersonic aircraft would have to disrupt the commercial airline market. Morgan Stanley in December highlighted Virgin Galactic's supersonic potential, with the firm forecasting $800 billion in annual sales by 2040 for high speed travel.

The company's design puts it into a development race against a few other private firms, some of which have been working on next-generation supersonic aircraft for several years. Boom Supersonic, Aerion Supersonic, and Spike Aerospaceeach are working on supersonic jets and, before the the coronavirus pandemic, those companies expected to conduct test flights as early as 2023 or 2024.

Virgin Galactic is finishing development testing of its SpaceShipTwo series of spacecraft, mostly recently installing the cabin's interior as it looks to begin flying passengers for the first time. The company's spacecraft manufacturing subsidiary building the second and third spacecraft for Virgin Galactic's fleet, underway at the company's facility in Mojave, California.

Virgin Galactic's spacecraft, left, alongside the next in the company's fleet under construction.

Virgin Galactic

Virgin Galactic shares rose 7% in trading to close at $24.02. The company reports earnings after the bell Monday.

Forget SpaceX: Invest in This Instead – Wealth Daily

Earlier this week, NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley returned to Earth from the International Space Station (ISS), capping off what will go down in history as a truly groundbreaking mission. After docking with the ISS two months earlier in late May, the astronauts have officially completed the first-ever crewed commercial flight of SpaceXs Dragon capsule.

Of course, astronauts have been flying to the ISS for decades, but the successful mission marks a critical moment in U.S. space exploration and travel a moment of domestic independence. After a long period of reliance on Russian Soyuz rockets for ISS docking, NASA is now working with SpaceX, a private American company instead.

NASAs shift to a private launch partner comes with more than a nationalistic benefit too. The cost of a seat on SpaceXs Dragon crew capsule comes in at $55 million. The cost for a seat on Roscosmos Soyuz rocket is nearly double at $90 million.

NASA already has its Crew-2 targeted to launch in spring 2021. This wasnt a one-off, in other words; its arguably the dawn of a new era in space travel.

As one might expect, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk was ecstatic upon the missions completion. This is an enormous win for his company, and it puts him in an incredibly influential position as far as NASA missions are concerned. Heres what Musk had to say at the welcoming ceremony:

I do think what this heralds really is fundamentally a new era in spaceflight. We're going to go to the moon, we're going to have a base on the moon, we're going to send people to Mars and make life multiplanetary, and I think this day heralds a new age of space exploration. That's what it's all about.

Musks bold ambitions to colonize space have never been a secret, but after putting astronauts on a spaceship, sending them to orbit, and then returning them home safely, those ambitions have never been closer to reality. At least, that may be the way it seems.

Im a pretty big fan of science fiction, but Ill be the first to admit that colonizing the moon and going to Mars isnt quite as alluring as a man like Musk makes it out to be. We already know what its like on both of these celestial bodies: Its barren, cold, and utterly unlivable. Even if the most dire predictions of climate change were to wreak havoc on Earth, humanity would still be much better off sticking it out right here.

That isnt to say that humans wont eventually need to extend their reach or that space exploration isnt important, but we will have to find something more livable before we get there; neither Mars nor the moon are it.

Considering Elon Musks intellectual prowess, its difficult to believe he hasnt considered that the temperature on Mars averages out to negative 81 degrees Fahrenheit, that the atmosphere is almost entirely carbon dioxide, or that the planet is prone to violent dust storms that kick up toxic soil. Could Elon really be this clueless about the inhabitability of Mars? Probably not.

Love him or hate him, Musk is no dummy, if measured only by the simple fact of what he has accomplished. Musk is a one-of-a-kind businessman who knows how to leverage lofty promises for funding and media attention. He channels his inner Tony Stark, promising humanitarian advancements and convincing the government to subsidize his operations.

You see, Musks most newsworthy ambition may be advancing humanity into a multiplanetary species, but the real long-term business model of SpaceX isnt about NASA contracts: Thats just the starting point. The real moneymaker for SpaceX is its Starlink network: a constellation of thousands of low-Earth-orbit (LEO) satellites designed to cover the entire Earth.

Late last month, Morgan Stanley released a research report updating its long-term valuation estimate for SpaceX. The investment bank believes the companys value could soar to as much as $175 billion because of Starlink.

Of course, Starlink is still a private company, so as far as retail investors are concerned, its off the table until the company holds an IPO. But SpaceX isnt the only company building out this new kind of LEO constellation; Facebook (NASDAQ: FB), OneWeb, and Boeing (NYSE: BA) are just a few companies working on similar networks.

Those who have been with us long enough know that weve been talking about LEO constellations and the moneymaking opportunity surrounding them for the last half-decade. For instance, I was shouting from the rooftops for investors to buy Aerojet Rocketdyne (NYSE: AJRD), a critical satellite component supplier, as early as 2016. The stock shot up over 300% during that time frame.

Now, on the heels of SpaceXs successful Dragon crew launch, the institutions are finally catching up. RBC upgraded Aerojet to Outperform on Wednesday, with a $54 price target. The company is far less attractive today than when we first began covering it, but its a future-minded stock that investors can still feel comfortable holding long term.

That all said, investors looking to get in on private companies akin to SpaceX arent to be pigeonholed to the public stock market for these kinds of huge gains: There are new and emerging opportunities in private equity that have recently become accessible to Main Street investors.

Ive heard from countless investors recently who have been begging for easier entry into private companies. The demand isnt surprising at all because this is how billionaires like Elon Musk ultimately make their wealth: by securing ownership before everyone else.

In fact, the demand for private equity is so great, I personally know an analyst who left his desk at Morgan Stanley to teach Main Street investors how to get in on private equity deals without having to be an industry insider or an accredited investor.

He recently launched a new investment service called Main Street Ventures where he lays out a simple three-step system for pinning down the most compelling private deals. He sent me a video explaining the system in a private email last week, but Im sharing it with you right here, because the public needs to see it.

Until next time,

Town of Hempstead Red-Flags Long Island Beaches After Fishermen Catch Shark – NBC New York

Officials in the Town of Hempstead red-flagged several beaches for the latest in a string of ongoing shark sightings off Long Island coastlines.

A tweet from the town's account said East Atlantic Beach and Atlantic Beach Estates were red-flagged after a fisherman caught a shark Sunday. Red flags are issued to warn beachgoers of severe hazards in the water.

Nassau County Executive Laura Curran says the sighting has prompted swimming restrictions at Nickerson Beach. County residents enjoying the beach can only enter the waters waist deep, Curran tweeted.

Shark sightings have become a semi-regular occurrence in the county, with officials modifying swimming restrictions or closing beaches entirely off-and-on for several weeks now.

Most sharks seen in the waters have been small. But one sighting last month prompted closures at Lido West and Nickerson beaches for reports of a large bull shark between 7 and 10 feet long. On Monday, swimmers were ordered out of the water at Lido West and Nickerson beaches in Hempstead after a pair of shark sightings. Town officials say they haven't seen a shark that size in the area in at least four years.

Letters to the Editor: Work on solutions for safely accessing beaches in age of COVID-19 – Charleston Post Courier

We all wish things could be as they were in the Lowcountry: plenty of space, free parking and wide-open beaches.

The population of Mount Pleasant, however, has nearly doubled since 2000 and the tri-county population is 143% of what it was 20 years ago. Our roads and other facilities are not designed for such rapid increase.

As a 30-year Isle of Palms resident, I have been privileged to be part of a welcoming community.

Weve made parking available and provided restrooms and showers. Weve enjoyed a wonderful relationship with neighboring communities.

Now, as IOP has struggled to deal with the rapid population increase, we have been vilified and accused of privatizing the beach and worse.

Attempts to fight COVID-19 are met with malicious accusations. The temporary rules are meant to reduce visitors to the island. Eliminating street parking didnt funnel more people to one area. Those areas already filled up before.

We apologize to people who feel unfairly hurt by this. While not a perfect solution, the intent is safety.

Council member John Moye spoke for our community during the July council meeting, saying, our neighbors want access to the beach and we want there to be responsible and accountable access to the beach.

We invite neighboring communities to offer constructive solutions to a tri-county problem. Everything may not be the way it used to be, but perhaps we can act neighborly, the way it used to be.

Now that the SEC has decided to play only interconference football this season, will this become the new normal?

Fans whove been pushing for a true playoff system, with larger conferences that have two divisions of seven or eight teams each, could get their wish if this season is successful.

Yes, this would leave the Clemson-Carolina game in limbo, unless Clemson joined the SEC.

Please note that some major rivals are already intraconference: Michigan and Ohio State; Auburn and Alabama; as well as Florida and Georgia.

If Clemson and South Carolina were in the same division, it could lead to the teams competing for the right to play for the SEC championship.

Elder abuse is a prevalent problem. Now, in the world of COVID-19, older Americans are more susceptible than ever to abuse, especially those affected by Alzheimers and dementia.

Elder abuse comes in many forms: financial, mental and physical.

Its important to identify those who are subject to mistreatment and work to stop it.

My dad had Alzheimers, and I saw companies and individuals try to take advantage of him.

It was hard enough watching him battle this disease and for my mom to care for him while managing medical and household expenses.

In May, the Promoting Alzheimers to Prevent Elder Abuse Act was introduced.

Now, Congress has an opportunity to pass meaningful legislation that would help prevent elder abuse.

If signed into law, this bill would require the Justice Department to provide critical training to professionals like police officers, firefighters and social workers to help them identify and respond to the signs of abuse.

U.S. Sen. Tim Scott understands the need for this policy, and he has just added his support to this bill as a co-sponsor.

Along with the Alzheimers Association, I applaud this action and thank Sen. Scott for his support.

Please join me in urging Sen. Lindsey Graham and Reps. Joe Cunningham and Jim Clyburn to be co-sponsors as well.

Its time to take action to protect our most vulnerable citizens.

Todays head shaker: An Associated Press article in the Aug. 2 Post and Courier stated that the S.C. Youth Wrestling Association hosted hundreds of youths at a wrestling tournament on July 28-31 at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center.

Since Myrtle Beach is one of the states COVID-19 hot spots, the association instituted strict temperature-check and mask-enforcement policies. And, apparently, the city signed off.

Wrestlers, however, were not required to wear a mask while they competed in one of the most intense contact sports.

This is astounding. Where are the adults?

What has happened to critical thinking and common sense?

Mount Pleasant has an opportunity to buy up to 71 acres in northern Mount Pleasant.

While thats a big piece to bite off, its an opportunity that shouldnt be missed. With effort and planning, our town government could leverage local and regional resources to guide what happens in that space.

Included in the plan should be a creative enterprise zone, where our towns cultural assets could be celebrated and supported.

The zone could include a community arts and heritage complex that celebrates our heritage by providing space for creating, displaying and interpreting art and the perorming arts.

A professional studio could build upon the existing local film industry.

Tourism and arts-related businesses would directly benefit. A combination public-private funding partnership could create an asset that puts the best of our creative energy on display.

At this time of division, uncertainty and fear, our town needs an exciting, visionary project to bring neighbors and neighborhoods together.

Establishing a creative enterprise zone would be a positive, progressive project that provides balance amid the flood of new homes, roads and businesses still to come.

Oahu beaches, parks and team sports will be halted once more – Honolulu Star-Advertiser

The shutdown is back.

Oahu parks and beaches, which reopened in May, will be closed again, starting 12:01 a.m. Saturday.

The worsening spread of COVID-19 on Oahu including 152 new cases and two deaths reported Thursday convinced city and state officials to bring back a ban on outdoor activities.

Gov. David Ige and Mayor Kirk Caldwell announced the new order, which they call Act With Care Do Not Gather, at a news conference Thursday afternoon.

It mandates that all 303 city-run parks and 18 state-operated sites on the island will be closed.

People will be allowed to traverse in and out of the ocean if they are engaging in water activities, but no activities will be allowed in parks or on beaches, Caldwell said.

We need to clamp down as hard as possible on large, uncontrolled gatherings, Caldwell said.

Running, jogging, walking and biking through the parks wont be allowed.

The closures include all pools, playgrounds, courts, fields, exercise equipment, dog parks, skate parks, the Koko Crater tramway and the Peoples Open Markets.

Previously issued park permits for camping, outdoor team sports, picnics and commercial activities will be canceled and refunds issued. All fall Parks and Recreation classes are canceled.

The order runs from 12:01 a.m. Saturday through midnight Sept. 4, essentially the next four weeks, although the end date may change depending on the circumstances, city officials said.

Those allowed activities include swimming, surfing, diving, solo paddling, fishing (below the high-water mark only, and not in groups) and Native Hawaiian gathering practices as allowed by law.

But in the water, not in the parks and not on the beaches, Caldwell said.

Stand alone comfort stations and outdoor showers will be open including to the homeless and others in the public, but those attached to other park buildings such as gymnasiums and recreation rooms will be closed. The ones that are open will follow regular park closure hours.

The parking lots at parks and beaches will be closed. The only exceptions are the ones in the four parks where the Elections Division has set up ballot dropoff boxes. They will be open through 7 p.m. Saturday.

Parking lots for lookouts, including Diamond Head, Lanai and Halona Blowhole, also will be closed.

Also closed: tennis and other play courts, hiking trails, campgrounds, botanical gardens and community gardens.

The Koko Head Shooting Complex will be open and follow its regular schedule. Archery ranges in other park locations will be closed.

Honolulu Police Department Chief Susan Ballard said 160 additional officers islandwide will be on the road working overtime, 24 hours a day and seven days a week, doing strategic enforcement of coronavirus-related rules. They will be responding to complaints, as well as pro-active patrols, especially where we see large gatherings, she said.

Enforcements going to be the key here, Ballard said. Starting 10 a.m. Sunday, the public will be able to call in a COVID enforcement complaint to an HPD hotline (723-3900). This also can be done online at hpdcovidenforce@honolulu.gov.

If you see any violations of the emergency proclamation, were asking you to please report them and the police will respond, Ballard said.

She noted that the state is still hoping to open up to out-of-state visitors starting Sept. 1. Im just begging you, please, weve got 28 days, Ballard said. Lets show them we can do this and when we reopen, lets follow the rules.

While HPD officers have been issuing more warnings, that will change, the chief said. At this point were probably going to do very few warnings its going to be citations or arrests.

The new order extends beyond government-run parks.

Some indoor commercial activities, including bowling alleys, arcades and mini-golf facilities, will be closed, as will private swimming pools and tennis courts. Theaters and museums, however, will be allowed to stay open.

Gyms and fitness centers can stay open, provided social distancing guidelines are followed, but group classes will be prohibited, Caldwell said.

Asked why beaches are closed while gyms are open, Caldwell said it has to do with the types of activity associated with each destination. The issue is with large, uncontrolled gatherings that we see outdoors for the most part, he said, pointing out that the city has reports of more than 50-100 people under a tent. Hard to control these gatherings, he said.

State Health Director Bruce Anderson said the state has been able to identify a number of individuals who attended beach parties and other events at beach parks we think thats one of the most likely sources of exposure for a lot of the cases where we arent able to identify any other sources.

Public and private golf courses will be limited to procedures established in the Hawaii Golf Phase One policy.

Previously announced mandates remain in place. Bars are one week into an order to close for three weeks. Restaurants and retailers will remain open.

Social gatherings either indoor or outdoor must be limited to no more than 10 individuals. The one exception is churches and other houses of worship, provided they adhere to social distancing guidelines. All individuals are expected to wear face coverings when outside of their homes.

Caldwell warned that a full shutdown of the island may be forthcoming if the numbers do not improve. If thats what it takes to protect the public health and safety of the people of Oahu, he said. Were not there yet, but were watching very closely.

The state park closures on Oahu include all waysides, lookouts, scenic shorelines, recreation areas and monuments. Camping is suspended and includes Ahupuaa o Kahana State Park, Keaiwa State Recreation Area, Malaekahana State Recreation Area (both the for the Kalanai and Kahuku sections) and Sand Island State Recreation Area. Whats That Building? The Modernist Bathhouses At Illinois Beach State Park – WBEZ

Saturday, Aug. 8, 6 a.m. CT

Many people go to Adeline Geo-Karis Illinois Beach State Park to camp or hike at the only natural dunes remaining on the Illinois shoreline. But they may not expect to find a wild example of Jet Age modernist architecture.

About 50 north of the Loop, near Zion, lll., two nearly identical, old bathhouses stand with rolling concrete roofs that mimic the waves on nearby Lake Michigan.

Except for a few who stop for a photo op, the bathhouses sit unused, largely because their beach has been mostly washed away due to erosion, said Bob Feffer, the superintendent of the state park. The northern building has been closed since at least 1987, and the southern which now sits only about 20 yards from the water closed in the early 2000s.

The buildings were designed only to be used in the summer, with changing rooms and showers for Lake Michigan bathers. The south bathhouse features a tall, spindly lifeguard tower that stretches up toward the sky and both have concrete screens to emphasize their indoor/outdoor characteristics.

The buildings are at opposite ends of a beachfront walkway parts of which are falling into the lake. Along the roughly half-mile walk between the bathhouses, a few picnic structures are scattered that mimic the roll-top roofs. Their kicky architecture is right out of 1960, the year that these structures opened.

And with them opened a new eras approach to state park lodges.

They stand in contrast to older log and stone buildings at other state parks like Starved Rock and White Pines Forest, where the bathhouses were built to be forward-looking.

Illinois State Beach Park opened in 1948 and just a decade later, then Illinois Gov. William Stratton announced a nearly $2.7 million remodel to rival Jones Beach State Park in New York. Thats equal to $25.1 million today. The renovation plans included a new lodge, a small zoo, three bathhouses, campgrounds and more, although not all were completed.

The buildings were designed by Barancick & Cole, the architecture firm that also worked on the Chicago-based Golden Point hamburger chain, a mid-century design with a triangular red roof that touched the ground and a golden steeple poking out of the top. Theyd later build several nice but not particularly fabulous modernist high rise buildings in North Side neighborhoods.

The lodge and bathhouses were a matching set, said Anthony Rubano of the Illinois State Historic Preservation Office. Today, the lodge has been remodeled so many times the resemblance to the original structure is gone. One of the bathhouses has even been demolished.

Feffer, who said hes been told by officials in Springfield the buildings cant be torn down because of their age, wants to see the walls removed and the wave-top roofs retained as picnic shelters. But even that might be hard, because breaking open the concrete construction could have unforeseen consequences.

The park is building a new concession building a little distance away, and for now, these remnants of modernist architecture sit in benign neglect, as they have for decades.

Fractured Lake Worth Beach commission wont consider talking to FPL about city utility – Palm Beach Post

Commissioner Omari Hardy said residential and commercial customers for Lake Worth Beachs city-owned utility company pay considerably higher rates than FPL customers,

LAKE WORTH BEACH Residential and commercial customers of Lake Worth Beachs city-owned utility company are acknowledged to pay more for service than those of Florida Power & Light.

How much more -- and what that difference means -- depends on who is asked.

The subject has been discussed in the past decade and it came up recently after Commissioner Omari Hardy offered a proposal that included approaching FPL to gauge its interest in buying the city utility.

>> LAKE WORTH BEACH READERS: Sign up for The Posts weekly Lake Worth Beach newsletter here

Hardys idea went nowhere. Instead, discussion of the agenda item during the July 21 city commission meeting degenerated into the petulance, acrimony and incivility that has typified the boards bi-monthly sessions since a heated verbal exchange in March between Hardly and Triolo went viral.

Commissioner Scott Maxwell criticized Hardy for pursuing the issue of shopping the utility company, saying it was "political theater at best, and self-serving. Its despicable."

Triolo, who has struggled mightily to maintain the bodys decorum at recent commission meetings, accused Hardy of threatening the jobs of city utility workers "in the middle of a global pandemic" and leveled a dig at the commissioner by offering to take a five-minute recess during the meeting so that "Commissioner Hardy can get himself together."

Hardy spent much of the meeting bickering with Triolo and Maxwell and even took a swipe at City Attorney Glen Torcivia, alleging the lawyer was "counting his votes" by siding with the majority of Triolo, Maxwell and Vice Mayor Andy Amoroso on a procedural matter.

Triolo, Maxwell and Amoroso have voted as a unified block on every agenda item brought forward by Hardy and Robinson since the March incident.

Before discussion devolved at the July 21 meeting -- and it didnt take long -- Hardy said he wanted to "start a conversation" about the city utilitys future for two reasons: the possible financial benefits of a sale and, what he said, was the utilitys inability to achieve rate parity with FPL.

Citing figures from the Florida Municipal Power Agency, a cooperative of municipally owned electric utilities that includes Lake Worth Beach, Hardy asserted that residential and commercial customers of the city utility pay more than FPL "and not by a little bit."

A chart presented by Hardy showed that Lake Worth Beach residents who used 1,000 kilowatt hours of power paid 12 percent more -- or nearly $140 annually -- than FPL patrons during a 12-month period spanning May, 2019 through April, 2020. Customers using 2,500 kilowatt hours during that time paid nearly 14 percent more than FPL charged, according to the chart, or just under $430 annually.

The percentage difference was even greater for commercial users of the city utility, Hardy said.

"The numbers are extreme," he said.

Thats untrue, according to Utility Director Ed Liberty. While Lake Worth Beach residents and business owners pay more than FPL, Liberty said, the difference is much smaller than Hardy claims.

Liberty, also citing FMPA numbers. said the gap between what city residents and FPL customers paid for 1,000-kilowatt hours was actually $4 in 2019.

That small disparity doesnt account for the $8 million -- including $4.5 to the citys general fund -- that the utility contributes to the city on an annual basis, he said.

"You cant look at this and say, Hey, I can get the same thing for $104 from FPL that I would get for $108 in Lake Worth," Liberty said. "The answer is, No you cant."

Without the utilitys contribution, Liberty said residents would have to go without some services they receive now or "you would have to raise taxes to pay for it."

Liberty, in his post since 2007, is credited on both sides of the commission divide for boosting the utilitys efficiency, reliability and reputation.

Hardy said Libertys leadership has increased the value of the utility, another reason for investigating a possible sale.

"Eds done a fantastic job making this place more profitable.but why are we not giving our residents a choice to have a lower light bill?" Hardy asked. "Given that our residents are paying higher rates, given that theres a potential to benefit from this transaction..I think its incumbent on us to at least approach FMPA and FPL to ascertain their willingness to transact with us and what we might get out of it."

In order to make a deal with FPL, Lake Worth Beach would have to extricate itself from several contracts with the FMPA, which Triolo said would be prohibitively expensive for the city.

Commissioner Herman Robinson said inquiring with FPL and FMPA was worth the effort.

"If we dont ask the question, we dont get the answer," Robinson said. "Are we afraid of an answer? Maybe thats why we dont want to ask the question."

Residents participating in the public comment portion of the July 21 meeting were split on the issue.

One resident wrote that a shift to FPL would not be "cost-effective" for the city. Another resident, who says shes been living in the city for 10 years, complained about high rates and power outages and added that "not having FPL is a deterrent that makes people not want to move here."

But if Lake Worth Beach ever considers selling its utility company and switching to FPL or another utility company, its not going to happen any time soon.

After voting down Hardys proposal in a 3-2 vote, Triolo and Amoroso backed a resolution by Maxwell "in support" of the city utility that included a provision forbidding a sale in "foreseeable future."

Hardy and Robinson voted against it.

"We have no intention at this time of entertaining any conversations [with] FPL or anybody else," Maxwell said.

Let’s Talk About The Air Force Potentially Replacing The F-15E With The F-15EX – The Drive

The U.S. Air Force could expand its current F-15EX procurement plans in order to replace its F-15E Strike Eagles, according to official documentation. The service currently aims to recapitalize its aging F-15C/D air superiority fighters with the new F-15EX as a priority, but it has also left the door open to replacing its Strike Eagles with the type. Such an initiative wouldn't come without controversy though, especially in terms of threatening the Air Force's long-held, but often questioned F-35A procurement number goal of 1,763 airframes.

The Justification and Approval (J&A) document lays out the USAFs case for buying the F-15EX. It says: The objective of this program is to rapidly develop, integrate, and field the F-15EX weapon system to refresh/replace aging F-15C/D aircraft. A decision to also refresh F-15E aircraft has not yet been made, but remains an option.

The report sets out the Air Force's reasoning for the sole-source contract being awarded to Boeing for F-15EX, and it was signed off by USAF acquisition chief Dr. William Roper in August 2019. It carefully lays out the urgent plans to replace an F-15C fleet that it is running out of airframe hours. It adds: The F-15 fleet is in dire need of a refresh, in particular the F-15C/D fleet, which without an expensive service life extension, will run out of airframe flying hours in [redacted}. In keeping with major recapitalization projects, the timing would suggest that, when it comes, the need to replace the Strike Eagle will be just as urgent as it is currently for the F-15C/D.

You can check out the document for yourself here:

The first production-standard F-15E Strike Eagle made its maiden flight on December 11, 1986, from McDonnell Douglas St Louis, Missouri, plant. The first of 236 production Strike Eagles was handed over to the 461st Tactical Fighter Training Squadron Deadly Jesters on April 12, 1988. The first operational unit the 336th Tactical Fighter Squadron (TFS) Rocketeers started to receive Strike Eagles at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, North Carolina, in December 1988. The type was famously thrust into combat for Operation Desert Storm in 1991.

National Museum of the United States Air Force

Prior to the first true F-15E's first flight, a TF-15A (F-15B) was used to prove the Strike Eagle concept, acting as a prototype and capabilities demonstrator.

Strike Eagle serial 89-0487 from Seymour Johnson became the first example to reach 12,000 flight hours on August 16, 2016. The F-15E was beefed-up in comparison to the F-15C in order to carry a heavy weapons loads, however, like the Eagle, the youngest of which is 35 years old, the Strike Eagles are aging airframes.

The small 219-strong Strike Eagle fleet remains in high demand with an enduring commitment in the U.S. Central Command region that leverages many impressive niche capabilities. With just six front line Strike Eagle squadrons, at least one is always deployed. The F-15E is also capable of delivering nuclear weapons and is the first jet certified to employ the newest variant of the B61 tactical nuclear bomb.

The current F-15E fleet features two different engine classes. The oldest jets feature the Pratt & Whitney F100-PW-220E with roughly 23,500lbs of thrust. The younger models feature the P100-PW-229 engines with around 29,000lbs of thrust, making them the most capable of the lot by a serious margin. They are also the most numerous. The F-15EX is set to receive the F110-GE-129 engine that also has 29,000lbs of thrust.

USAF

Buying more F-15EXs to replace the current F-15E would be hugely significant. USAF Chief of Staff Gen. David L. Goldfein has made regular assertions that the F-15EX will not impact the F-35 Lightning II program, but switching later F-35 procurement targeted at replacing the F-15E to the F-15EX could impact the overall F-35A projected inventory requirement. Moreover, the Boeing fighter has been used as a means to pile competitive pressure on Lockheed Martin to reduce F-35 procurement and through-life costs.

The J&A report underscores the reasoning behind purchasing the F-15EX in terms of ease of transition: Refreshing the existing F-15 fleet (versus transitioning to a new advanced fighter aircraft) with F-15EX will dramatically reduce disruption to the logistics and sustainment infrastructure, as well as operational training and Mission Ready status of current F-15 units, by taking advantage of inherent familiarity with the existing aircraft, which will allow focus on the new and improved systems.

Boeing

The case for the urgent replacement of the F-15C/D includes reasons regarding safety. The schedule impact if there is no refresh is exacerbated by the fact that the average age of the F-15C/D fleet is 35 years. The fleets structural integrity is rapidly degrading due to the high-g flight profile used during training and operations. One wing commander imposed a G restriction due to a loss of confidence in the safety of the fleet.

The USAF examined a service life extension for the F-15C but this was ruled out as not being cost-effective. The speed with which Boeing can build the F-15EX is cited as another key differentiator. Based on the foreign investment in the Saudi Arabian F-15SA and Qatari F-15QA projects, the USAFs F-15EX will share 90-95 percent commonality with the Qatari jets, but it will receive some USAF-specific additions such as Eagle Passive/Active Warning and Survivability System (EPAWSS).

USAF

The report adds that buying the F-15EX will save the USAF $3 billion over the Future Years Defense Program compared to replacing that fleet with F-35s by avoiding significant transition costs required for a new aircraft. It adds: The USAF estimates that it will take six months or less to transition from the F-15C/D to the F-15EX given the significant commonality between the F-15C/D and F-15EX aircraft components and ground support equipment, while the transition time from F-15s to the F-35 (or any other airframe) will take approximately 18 months for an Active Duty squadron and 36 months for an Air National Guard squadron. Accordingly, from both an economic and readiness perspective, no other aircraft will satisfy the USAF requirement to refresh the F-15C/D fleet.

In addition, the document makes it clear that the premium once placed on an all stealth tactical fighter fleet has eroded: The USAF has determined that a mix of 4th generation capacity and 5th generation capability is necessary in balancing near and mid-term readiness with future needs.

These were all reasons we discussed as per the justification for the 'F-15X' when The War Zone broke the story of its existence two years ago.

USAF

There are no official plans to replace the F-15E when it is retired from service, and officially it could remain in service through life-extension programs. Yet, based on the situation facing the F-15C/D, it could be up for replacement as early as the end of the decade. Previously, the War Zone was told that the F-15EX is intended to directly replace the USAF's entire F-15C/D fleet. It would have no impact on the existing F-15E Strike Eagle fleet or its planned upgrade pathway that is underway now.

The F-15E shares similar cutting-edge technology as is being fielded in the F-15EX. It has been upgraded with the Raytheon AN/APG-82(v)1 Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar, the new Advanced Display Core Processor (ADCP) II, and it too is receiving the new EPAWSS self-protection system.

The current F-15EX procurement plan as set out earlier this month could be worth up to $22.9 billion over 10 years. This cost ceiling is based on a March 2019 F-15 SPO Rough Order of Magnitude (ROM) estimate for the maximum quantity of 200 aircraft. However, the report says procurement quantities will be established at a Most Probably Quantity (MPQ) of 144 aircraft. Still, this is seen as minimum fleet size, and it is likely to reach near or at the 200 level just in regards to replacing the F-15C/D fully.

USAF

The youngest F-15C/D in the USAF's fleet is 35 years old.

The current F-15C/D fleet of approximately 245 aircraft would be replaced on what would be close to a one-for-one basis if all options are exercised. While the report doesn't discuss actual numbers, it would suggest the similarly sized F-15E fleet could be recapitalized under a very similar model, which would take F-15EX procurement out to roughly 400 aircraft.

A USAF spokesman toldAir Force Magazine That decision has not been made, regarding the F-15E. A common F-15EX fleet in a merged Eagle community would have its benefits both logistically and operationally. There is also bound to be some tension between the F-15C/D units, the vast majority of which are Air National Guard, and the active-duty F-15E community under the current procurement plan for the F-15EX.

As the plan sits, the F-15EX would equip squadrons whose only missions have been air-to-air combat and air sovereignty with the most advanced and reliable multi-role F-15s in the entire force. In other words, the F-15E community, which is tasked with some of the most complex combat operations abroad, would be flying aging, partially upgraded jets while the Guard has brand new F-15EX with excess capabilities. This has raised the question of why doesn't the F-15E get replaced with the F-15EX and the current F-15C/D community receive surplus F-15Es?

USAF

F-35As and F-15Es in formation.

With over 50 years of production, the F-15 is entering into uncharted territory for fighter aircraft manufacturing. Boeing has cleverly retained credibility through reinventing the F-15 via foreign investment. With at least 144 new F-15s entering the Air Force's fleet in the near term, some 16 years after its last new Eagle was delivered, the prospects for follow-on orders are certainly there. This doesn't mean that recapitalizing the Strike Eagle fleet with F-15EX is anywhere near a done deal, but the door is open and it might just prove to be another case of the swiftest, cheapest, and most sensible way to keep some of the Air Force's most important fighter squadrons in business.

Regardless, with the F-15EX's stated service life of a whopping 20,000 hours, the Eagle will be gracing American fighter wing ramps well into the second half the century.

8 helpful Chrome extensions to improve working from home – Mashable

On one hand working from home is truly awesome. Your commute is however far it is from your bed to your laptop, you don't have to deal face-to-face with annoying colleagues, you can make your own homemade, healthy snacks, and yes, you can work in your pajamas.

On the other hand, working from home turns your cozy sanctuary into an extension of your workplace, and it can be hard to switch off the way you normally would when you leave a physical place.

While there are some things you can do to mitigate this, like finding a place to work that's not where you play, being strict with cut off times to stop working, and making sure you take regular breaks, there are also some other hacks that we think can help your work-from-home process. These come in the form of Google Chrome extensions.

These free add-ons to your browser are tiny tools that can make a difference to your working day by improving your productivity and wellbeing. While not all of these will be useful to everyone, we're sure there will be at least a few of these Chrome extensions that will improve your work-from-home experience.

Momentum is a very popular Chrome extension boasting over three million users. It replaces your normal new tab page with a"personal dashboard," featuring a beautiful landscape photograph, a to-do list, your personalized weather, and inspirational quotes.

If you're the type of person that likes to center yourself and take a calming deep breath before you hit the power button on your laptop, Momentum is for you. The team behind the tool states the aim of the extension is creating a new tab page that gives you a moment of calm and inspires you to be more productive. It achieves this last part by asking you what's your "main focus" each day, a handy reminder to keep yourself on track.

We've all marveled at the meteoric rise of Zoom during 2020. For obvious reasons, the service has seen a huge increase in users. If this is the platform that your company uses for "cloud meetings" then you need this extension in your life.

The Zoom Chrome Extension allows any user to schedule Zoom meetings directly from Google Calendar. With the click of your mouse, you can start an instant meeting right there and then, or schedule for a future meeting to take place at a time that suits you.

Once you've set up a Zoom meeting, the meeting URL and any other information you've added is sent via a Google Calendar invitation so the person, or people, you've invited can join with a single click.

Make your to-do lists digital.

If you're used to spreading yourself around a lovely, sizable desk with notepads, post-it notes, and memos dotted all over the place, working from your couch can be a struggle.

Use your work-from-home experience as an opportunity to improve your working habits by making your notes digital. Minimalist Notepad offers a "simple, elegant way" to quickly write down your notes, to-do lists, shopping lists, links you want to visit or bookmark, images you need to reference, videos you want to watch, and more. You can launch it directly from your browser bar in a matter of seconds. It may be simple, but it is also fully-featured.

While you can use it as a simple text tool, it supports all kinds of formatting options, including font size/type/style/color/background color, block-quotes, bulleted lists, image and video insertions, and URL links, among other useful tools. Ditch the planet-harming post-its and go digital!

You need a break from your desk. Let this Chrome extension help.

We're all about wellbeing with this next suggestion. While you may not be cooped up in a cubicle, it's all too easy to stay stationary for longer than is good for you when working on a laptop. This extension aims to change that.

Stretchclock is a "professional break reminder for desk warriors." The configurable timer runs in one of your browser tabs and reminds you to stretch at set times that suit you. When the StrechClock countdown timer reaches zero, it shows you easy "no-sweat" exercises that you can do at your desk, even if you're wearing business attire. You can choose how many exercises you want to do each time from just a few simple stretches to half an hour yoga-style work-friendly workouts.

It's a fab way to remind yourself to stay active and help prevent back issues and repetitive stress injuries while working from home.

Screenshots are a must when you're on Zoom call number 46 of the day.

For a free tool, Nimbus does A LOT of really useful things that over a million people are very grateful for on a daily basis. We recommend checking the extension out in detail, but for the sake of this article, we're focussing on the extension's ability to help you quickly and easily capture images and videos of your computer screen.

If you're trying to collaborate remotely with colleagues while working from home it can be difficult to get people to understand instructions over the phone alone. Visuals are an essential part of explaining processes or instructions. Nimbus lets you capture whole or partial screenshots. You can then use the tool to add graphics, such as arrows and stickers, text boxes, highlight text, and blur out areas you don't want to be seen before you send it to a workmate.

Similarly, Nimbus allows you to record video from your screen to make a screencast, so you could easily "show" someone how to do something without having to fuss with remote access set-ups. This is particularly useful if you work with people in different timezones to you.

If part of what bugs you about your job is the repetitive nature of some of the things you have to type often, we can help.

Auto Text Expander 2 is a nifty tool that helps you easily create custom keyboard shortcuts to expand and replace text as you type. While online services like Gmail let you create email templates and can analyze what you're typing and automatically suggest additional text, this tool takes things a step further in that you can program it to add email addresses, company names, even complete sentences to be automatically added to your online content all over the Internet.

For example, you could create a shortcut that would mean typing "[emailprotected]" appearing in your document as "[emailprotected]" You can use Auto Text Expander 2 to create up to 510 such keyboard shortcuts to suit your needs and save your time and sanity.

Not everyone will benefit from all of these Chrome extensions, but if some tools help some work-from-home warriors, we're happy to have helped.

Obviously the Office- and Zoom-themed extensions are only going to be of use to those that use those services, but others, like Grammarly, Momentum, and Minimalist Notepad will help anyone who works from home on a personal computer. Wellbeing is just as important as productivity, if not more so, so do also consider the installing the StretchClock - Break Reminder and Office Yoga extension. Having a physical and mental break from your laptop screen is essential to staying well while you're staying home.

Black Lives Matter Protester Turns Himself In To Police One …

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) A Black Lives Matter protest leader was free Saturday after he turned himself in to face charges for allegedly assaulting a police officer.

Twenty-eight-year-old Derrick Ingram is accused of shouting into a bullhorn that was aimed at a police officers ear during a June protest, causing pain and hearing impairment.

Dozens of officers tried to arrest Ingram on Friday during a six-hour standoff in Midtown.

Ingrams supporters showed up at the scene, and officers were then ordered to back off, a move thats been criticized by police unions.

Mayor Bill de Blasio praised the order, saying in a statement, Commissioner Shea made the right decision to call off the operation. Assaulting an officer is unacceptable and will always lead to consequences, but arrests must be made properly.

Ingram spoke with reporters in Bryant Park on Saturday.

Im highly traumatized from everything, from the drones to the dogs to the lies that have been told by the NYPD, and Im ready to make a change. I think we should focus our efforts on getting Commissioner Shea out of office, he said.

Ingram then led a march to the Midtown North Precinct, where he turned himself in and was later released without bail.

He is facing assault charges.
