Disney World’s July 11 reopening: 6 things to watch – CNN

(CNN) For Disney World's most ardent fans, tomorrow is indeed only a day away.

Disney World is the biggest of big deals in the theme park universe. And the eyes of the theme park world will be on it this weekend.

1. Reservations and capacity

Two of Walt Disney World Resort's parks are set to reopen Saturday: Magic Kingdom Park (pictured) and Disney's Animal Kingdom. EPCOT and Disney's Hollywood Studios are slated to reopen on July 15.

Matt Stroshane/Walt Disney World Resort

Guests must follow four steps to use the system:

1. Get a valid park admission linked to a Disney account you've set up online.2. Register the members of your party.3. Select a date and a park to attend.4. Finally, review and confirm your reservations.

For instance, at 1 p.m. ET Friday, there were no parks available for annual passholders in July. But August had some availability, especially on weekdays late in the month. People already holding theme park tickets or who have a Disney Resort reservation still have openings and options in July. Right now, spots for Hollywood Studios in July are particularly hard to come by.

As the situation is in constant flux, you might need patience and flexibility at first. Or you might get lucky and snag your top choices right away.

CNN Travel will be looking at how the new system works and what level of crowds Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom attract on Saturday and beyond.

Florida has seen some of sharpest spikes in Covid-19 cases in the United States and the world recently. No one can predict how that might affect things in coming weeks.

2. Temperature screenings

All guests will be required to a undergo temperature screening before entering a theme park at Walt Disney World Resort.

David Roark/Walt Disney World Resort

By now, it should be no surprise to theme park guests that they'll undergo a temperature screening before being allowed in. Here's what Disney says to expect:

"All guests will be required to undergo temperature screenings prior to entering a theme park. Based on guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, anyone displaying a temperature of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or higher will be directed to an additional location for rescreening and assistance.

"Those who again measure 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or higher will not be allowed entry, nor will those in their party," Disney said.

Schaffner said that back-up reading should prevent most problems.

For someone who does pop the 100.4 limit, he said "if that person goes under tent, gets a cool drink, and is permitted to rest, they'll cool down rapidly enough to past the test -- assuming they are not ill and do not have an infection."

Disney told CNN Travel on Thursday that secondary screenings take place in a cooler, tented area several minutes after the initial reading.

Dr. Shannon Hopson, an endocrinologist in Corvallis, Oregon, shared her second opinion: "You can get an increased body temperature from being overly hot, but I wouldn't think this would be particularly common."

Worried anyway?

Hopson's advice is to make sure you're well-hydrated before you get in line and shield your face with a hat or a cap with a big brim. She also said set your appointment for a morning arrival if you can so you'll arrive when it's cooler.

Hopson is actually more worried about potential Covid-19 carriers that temperature screenings won't catch.

"The biggest problem with temperature screenings is that they can provide a false sense of security. They're everywhere. We do them for patients and all staff at my office, but they only catch the sick people," Hopson said. "We know that asymptomatic carriers can spread coronavirus as well as sick people, so there's just no way to screen those people out."

We'll be watching how temperature checks are going -- and how the public reacts to them.

3. Dining

Guests at Disney's Riviera Resort can see Minnie, Mickey and the gang during breakfast at Topolino's Terrace -- Flavors of the Riviera, the resort's rooftop restaurant. During the phased reopening, characters will maintain proper physical distancing while parading through the restaurant.

Matt Stroshane/Walt Disney World Resort

Like restaurants anywhere else, Disney has had to upend its normal dining experience and find new ways to deliver food and drinks to hungry and thirsty guests.

In a news release, Disney said "new measures promoting health and well-being will be implemented." You can expect to see "enhanced cleaning in seating, dining and common areas, as well as changes to self-serve options."

-- You'll need a face covering when entering and leaving dine-in restaurants, but obviously they can be removed when you're seated and you're ready to eat.

-- If you're a day guest, you'll absolutely need a reservation for dining at a Disney Resort restaurant. And if you're an overnight guest, it's highly recommended.

-- Wherever possible, Disney is offering cashless and contactless exchanges.

4. Character interactions

Mickey Mouse will star in the "Mickey and Friends Cavalcade" when Magic Kingdom Park reopens.

Olga Thompson/Walt Disney World Resort

Perhaps the most cherished memories from a Disney visit are children rushing with mad joy into the arms of a beloved character. Unfortunately, it's a look-but-don't-touch policy for character interactions with Mickey and his pals during the pandemic.

But Disney will be making it a visual spectacle.

In the Magic Kingdom, "characters will cavalcade along the traditional parade route throughout the day." And over at Animal Kingdom, guests might witness "Disney characters setting sail down Discovery River on special boats, such as Donald Duck, Daisy Duck, Pocahontas and others."

We'll be keeping an eye out for how these encounters go. Will the kiddies still enjoy these sightings and be able to live without the hugs?

5. Rides and lines

Ground markings will help promote proper physical distancing in attraction queues. And rides won't be filled to capacity.

Matt Stroshane/Walt Disney World Resort

So there's not much point in limiting park capacity, requiring masks and keeping characters apart from guests and then letting folks bunch up in attraction lines and on the rides themselves.

To that end, you'll be seeing signs for social distancing in queues. And rides will be sent out with empty seats, with only people in the same party bunched up together.

In its news release, Disney said it expects to open up very popular attractions on Saturday such as Space Mountain, The Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Caribbean and the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train.

Tremaine says to keep in mind there are no Fast Passes for now in the Magic Kingdom. Rides are first-come, first-served.

We'll be watching how the combo of fewer people in the park vs. social distancing on the rides plays out. Will waits be shorter, longer or about the same?

6. The Disney experience during the pandemic

Ground markings will help promote proper physical distancing outside retail shops. How will such measures go over?

David Roark/Walt Disney World Resort

Perhaps the most fascinating aspect of the reopening will be the reaction of the guests to all the new safety measures. After all, a July 2020 visit is going to be very different than what guests enjoyed pre-pandemic.

Tremaine said, "The safety measures at Universal Studios and Dollywood [in Tennessee] haven't put much of a dent in my enjoyment of the experience. Hand sanitizer before rides and distancing between parties isn't that hard to manage."

But what about a face mask? And in a sticky Orlando summer, too.

"It definitely isn't ideal to have to wear a mask right now. I know Disney die-hards who say they won't go back until they don't have to wear masks. But I think for a lot of people, we're willing to put up with the heat and inconvenience and discomfort of a mask if it means we get to be somewhere we love," she said.

"It's been a really bad few months. If a mask is the tradeoff for a little bit of pixie dust in our lives, so be it."

Disney has confirmed they are designating specific areas where families can take a break and take off their masks.

"It's great time to point out that we, as theme park guests, often don't realize how much work is going on behind the scenes at the entertainment attractions that we visit," Lewison said. "Even the smaller regional amusement parks are pretty complex operations, and Covid has added another layer of intense complexity over what is already a complicated operation."

He said guests should keep in mind that "theme park employees also have to be temperature-checked, social distance from each other, wear masks and take meals and breaks in safe situations. They're also in unfamiliar circumstances. Parks now have a trickier balance between their permitted capacities and visitor demand and staffing."

His assessment of their efforts?

"What I've seen is that the parks have taken on a huge challenge and they're doing an amazing job with it in a very uncertain new environment."

Lewison had some advice for people going Saturday and beyond.

The "top tip is always: Make sure that you carefully follow all park rules and regulations, from signage to cast member instructions. If you're unsure, ask a cast member."

He said to be prepared for some attractions to not be available. As for the rides that are operating, guests should also expect to see some changes.

In the end, it's all about preparation, said Lewison.

"Make sure you have a comfortable mask, comfortable shoes, sunscreen, hat, hand sanitizer (just in case, although parks have done a lot to provide it), reservations, phone charger, water ... all the usual stuff that improves your day at a theme park."

Finally -- "Have fun! You're one of the lucky few at a theme park, and I'm jealous!"

The Pandemics Impact On M&AAnd What Will Happen Next – Chief Executive Group

The coronavirus pandemic and accompanying market downturn have left mergers and acquisitions in something of a quarantine themselves. Such activity has slowed to a crawl, and uncertainty reigns: What will the landscape look like when this crisis subsides? Where will opportunities arise? Is a recession likelyor has a depression already arrived?

Certainly there are those who have managed to make hay, despite the slump. Witness, for example, the $456 million deal between Johnson & Johnson and the U.S. government, and the accompanying hope that the pharmaceutical giant can fast-track a Covid-19 vaccine. But overall the picture is bleak. According to Forbes, worldwide M&A was down 35 percent from the last quarter of 2019 to the first quarter of 2020, and 39 percent in the U.S. The year-over-year decreases were 25 and 50 percent, respectively.

Particularly notable were Xerox backing out of a $35 billion deal to acquire HP, and Apollo Global Management withdrawing its $8.5 billion bid to acquire the broadcasting company Tegna Inc. and aerospace suppliers Woodward and Hexcel mutually agreeing to terminate their $6.4 billion merger. Indeed, a growing list of private equity firms have walked away from deals signed before the pandemic hit. In the PE space, we have seen financial sponsors dump at least a half-dozen deals so far in 2020 in the U.S. alone.

Nate Pund, a managing director for Houlihan Lokeys consumer, food and retail group, told SGB Executive that M&A has, in effect, come to a halt while companies assess the damage the crisis has incurred, and what might lie ahead. The latter is obviously a very tough call. There are those who believe the world is already in a recession, and certainly there are many indications that that is the case: Company valuations have plummeted, unemployment has spiked and consumers are buying little more than bread, milk and eggs.

Will the virus fade with the warm weather, as some have predicted? Will the U.S. be able to restart its economy as a result? Its all very unclear, as Pund said:

Uncertainty is the killer of everything. When you dont have any sense of the world, it is very difficult to make an informed decision. If you have bad news, you can deal with that. If you have good news, you can deal with that. But when you have uncertain news, you dont know what to do.

Some, like BNP Paribas M&A head Bruno Villard, believe the pandemic will have a lasting effect on the worldwide economic picture. As he told Bloomberg, It will not be just a blip in deals flow. But David Ludwig, Goldman Sachs head of Americas Equity Capital Markets, is more optimistic, telling that same outlet that once the threat diminishes, the rally will come in a reasonable period of time.

In the aftermath of past global crisesat least those that can be recalled in the memories of current business leadersthe deal economy was eaten by the bears only to run again with the bulls, such as was witnessed after the bursting of the Internet bubble in 2000 and the Great Recession of 2008-2009. As in past global crises, not knowing what is going to happen next in the markets has already contributed to buyers renegotiating, delaying, deferring or outright cancelling their M&A deals. Whats different this time around is that the impact of the global Covid-19 pandemic is primarily on the commercial economy rather than the financial system, leaving a big question mark as to the viability of target businesses (if not the potential buyers themselves).

The risk for buyers to proceed to do a deal in the short term is high, but there are many more factors one has to take into account to get a deal done. In addition to price and other economic terms, there are real new due diligence issues that have to be investigated, if you can even conduct a due diligence investigation in this environment, and one has to assess what debt financing will be available, and on what terms (if at all), and how much additional time to build in to any process for obtaining necessary regulatory and other third-party approvals for deals.

Johnson & Johnson is on track to begin human testing on a coronavirus vaccine this fall, with the hope that it can release 600 million to 800 million doses in early 2021. In the meantime, the company readjusted its short-term financial goals, announcing on April 14 that its forecasted 2020 revenue is expected to be between $77.5 billion and $80.5 billion, down from its previous prediction of $85.4 billion to $86.2 billion. Stock dividends and investor confidence nonetheless remained high, and obviously the company believes better things are in store if it can meet demand for the vaccine.

There are other companies with vaccines in the pipeline, too. Chillingly, there were reports in mid-April that the virus is mutating, though researchers were still confident that those drugs currently in development would be effective.

Bloomberg noted that the crisis has resulted in other healthcare deals, like Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc.s $11.5 billion acquisition of Qiagen NV, which makes testing kits. Bloomberg also pointed out that infrastructure deals remain very much on the table because cash flow is never an issue in that space and the contracts tend to be of the multiyear variety.

An interesting side note is that some deals, notably Morgan Stanleys $13 billion acquisition of the discount brokerage E-Trade, included specific provisions preventing either party from invoking the coronavirus outbreak as a reason to renegotiate. Typically such agreements are subject to material adverse effect (MAE) qualifiers, under which either party might be freed from their obligations if an unforeseen event has a long-term impact on a companys potential. But according to the terms of this deal, the pandemic could not be a reason to trigger an MAE.

Meanwhile, some sellers are pushing backand hard. After The Carlyle Group and Singaporean sovereign wealth fund GIC abandoned an agreement signed in December 2019 to make a 20% stake in American Express Global Business Travel at a $5 billion enterprise value, Carlyle claimed that AMEX had breached the no MAE clause, which did not have a specific carveout in case of a global pandemic. AMEXs well capitalized investors, including Certares Management and Qatar Investment Authority, did not take this lying down, firing back with a lawsuit in Delaware Chancery Court to force Carlyle to complete the deal and to expedite a trial to require the same.

M&A opportunities tend to arise from financial crises, as companies fortunes wane and they begin looking to sell. And certainly there are always plenty of savvy buyers circling overhead, eager to take advantage of diminished valuations. Gap acquired Athleta in 2008 during the Great Recessio, and Phillips-Van Heusen acquired Tommy Hilfiger immediately after, in 2010.

The same thing can be expected to happen now. Private equity firms and hedge funds will likely lead the charge on such rescue deals, and certainly they have the resources; Bloomberg estimated that PE firms alone have some $2 trillion at their disposal. They might not swoop in immediately, as they have to tidy up their own portfolios, but they will surely be on the case.

Their targets will no doubt be in the travel, lodging and entertainment sectors, which have taken a major hit during the pandemic with shelter-in-place orders the norm. The World Travel and Tourism Council is predicting a loss of 75 million jobs and $2.1 trillion in revenue, and the U.S. Travel Association projects that 4.6 million people will lose their jobs through May alone. Marriott, meanwhile, serves as an example of how hard-hit the lodging industry has been; that chain had seen a 75 percent reduction in revenue as of early April, a shortfall that the U.S. governments stimulus package can only begin to address.

Also ripe for M&A are industries looking to repair supply chains, once the pandemic is over. Bloomberg pointed to the automotive sector, for example, as one that might be looking to become less dependent on foreign sources for various components.

But again, there are caveats about such things as how a target companys valuation might be impacted by the pandemic (especially given supply-chain disruption) and how decisions made between signing and closing might affect an agreement, given that they are made during such a tumultuous time.

The due diligence process has also been dramatically altered. On-site visits and in-person meetings have taken a backseat to video conference calls, not to mention the trickiness involved with obtaining original documentation in the current climate. Regulatory matters will also be elongated, which may require extending the drop-dead date featured in all agreements (i.e., the date after which either party may walk away from the deal as a result of unforeseen delays).

But there is great uncertainty about all this, as there is with the overall picture, and that uncertainty is as pervasive in the M&A space as any other. The best that can be said is that CEOs who are alert for opportunities, especially in the healthcare and travel sectors, stand to benefit the most.

KidSenses to hosts virtual summer camps – The Tryon Daily Bulletin – Tryon Daily Bulletin

Beginning July 13, KidSenses will begin hosting themed, curriculum aligned summer camps for children rising into Kindergarten through the 5th grade. From animals to world travel, there is something exciting for your child to learn about and enjoy. All materials will be provided by the museum as well as passes to local activity and food venues that are able to safely operate under current regulations.

As in previous years, two styles of camps will be offered. Mini camps provide approximately 20 hours of educational fun, while full camps provide up to 40 hours. Prerecorded and live videos will guide your family through all the activities. However, do not feel as if your child has to complete all the activities within the camp week. All the videos will be accessible to registrants even after the camps end, meaning camp activities can continue throughout the entire summer if that works best for your family.

Kindergartners through 2nd graders can explore a downtown environment, searching for clues to solve the mystery of The KidSenses Caper, or they can explore the cultures of the world while eating tasty foreign snacks! 3rd through 5th graders can experience the wild world of animals and the habitats in which they live, or they can blast off with rockets and get messy with slime!

During each camp week, we will host our Fun Fridays for a live, in person activity where campers can participate in activities they cant do at home. Whether its meeting animal ambassadors or eating liquid nitrogen ice cream, it will be an adventure! Fun Friday activities will be scheduled based on registration to ensure that we can adhere to social distancing guidelines.

If your child is one of the first 15 to sign up for each camp, they will receive a free summer camp T-shirt! For the full schedule and details on registration, visit Kidsenses.org/camps.

Due to State guidelines, KidSenses Childrens Interactive Museum is currently closed. However, we are actively posting simple, hands-on activities on our Facebook page. Visit http://www.kidsenses.org or http://www.factorymuseum.org for more information.

Expedia 2020 Summer Travel Report Reveals Same-State Stays, Road Trips and Flexibility Pave the Way to Recovery – Hospitality Net

SEATTLE - Summer travel inarguably looks different this summer, and the latest report from Expedia.com sheds light on the emerging priorities and behaviors of Americans looking to get away. Leveraging search and demand data and a national poll of 1,000+ Americans, results from the report include:

"People miss travel, they have vacation days to use and they also want to stay safe," says Senior Director of PR and Social for Expedia.com, Nisreene Atassi. "Given how quickly the advice and restrictions are changing, one of our main priorities at Expedia is making sure our customers have the information they need to navigate this summer travel season."

Read on for more insights and tips from the Expedia 2020 Summer Travel Report.

Summer travelers staying closer to home

Last-minute getaways are also on the rise, with more travelers booking trips 0-7 days out this summer than in previous years.

"While the desire to get away is still going strong for many of us, how and where we're choosing to go this summer looks different," says Atassi. "Beaches and national parks remain popular, but more Americans are choosing destinations that are closer to home and drivable, versus going somewhere more exotic. Interestingly, we've seen that travelers are making these plans at the last minute. Things are so unpredictable right now with COVID-19, so it's possible that travelers feel more comfortable making travel plans for the near future vs. planning too far ahead."

Safety first: road trips seen as the safest way to get away this summer

As travelers venture away from home and destinations open back up to tourism, health and safety takes priority over price when trip-planning. 72 percent of survey respondents said they're opting for a road trip this summer because it feels safer than flying, and more people listed health and safety (72%) and avoiding crowds (68%) as top concerns over budget (60%). In response to these concerns, the industry is rolling out new sanitation measures to help minimize risks. Expedia displays these hygiene amenities on the site so travelers can feel comfortable leaving home; they'll know whether a hotel property has enhanced cleaning processes or if an airline requires passengers to wear face masks.

Travelers can also message their hotel or vacation rental right from the Expedia mobile app and ask for more info on their policies, request special arrangements or check whether certain amenities like the pool or spa are going to be open.

Flexibility

To make it easier to search for flexible options, Expedia lets travelers filter by hotels that offer free cancellation and airlines that are waiving any change fees for future bookings.

"People often choose non-refundable rates because they're generally cheaper, but with so many destinations eager to welcome back tourists it's more realistic than ever to find a great value without having to sacrifice flexibility," says Atassi.

Nanotech Injections Restore Vision In Blind Rats – Best gaming pro

A world staff of scientists have restored the imaginative and prescient in blind rats utilizing a nanoparticle-based synthetic retina prosthesis that may be injected straight into the attention. The scientific advance has been efficiently demonstrated for a interval of eight months with out the necessity for surgical procedure. Whereas its nonetheless early days for the analysis, it suggests it would sooner or later be potential to make use of the conjugated polymer nanoparticle (P3HT-NP) therapy in people to appropriate eye issues starting from hereditary retinal dystrophies to the extremely frequent age-related macular degeneration.

In our liquid retina gadget, P3HT nanoparticles unfold out over your complete subretinal house and promoted light-dependent activation of spared inside retinal neurons, recovering subcortical, cortical and behavioral visible responses, Fabio Benfenati, analysis director on the Italian Institute of Know-how, advised Digital Tendencies. We predict that P3HT-NPs present a brand new avenue in retinal prosthetics.

Retinal prostheses consult with implantable gadgets which are designed to assist restore sight in sufferers with retinal degeneration. They work by introducing visible data into the retina by means of stimulation of surviving retinal neurons. Whereas promising, present retinal prostheses have up to now been proven to solely return low-resolution imaginative and prescient: Helpful for issues like distinguishing between gentle and darkish or recognizing easy shapes and objects. This new nanotech method seems way more promising, providing considerably larger decision. After only one injection, exercise within the rats visible cortex and visible acuity had been the identical as these present in wholesome rats.

As famous, theres nonetheless way more analysis that must be carried out earlier than this method is tried in people. However Benfenati steered that that is a part of the street map ahead.

The obvious growth is to method the first-in-human utility with the present know-how that may present essentially the most full solutions, he stated. This may embrace a step in bigger animals and a long-term research of the nanoparticle destiny. I foresee that itll require just a few years to be completed.

A paper describing the work, titled Subretinally injected semiconducting polymer nanoparticles rescue imaginative and prescient in a rat mannequin of retinal dystrophy, was recently published in the journal Nature Nanotechnology.

How to avoid being tracked while reading through your Gmail – Winged Express

All of individuals obnoxious marketing e-mail that crowd your inbox are not just pushing a merchandise. They are also tracking whether youve opened the e mail, when you opened it, and where by you were being at the time by embedding monitoring program into the concept. Just kind email tracking into your research engine and watch all the application apps show up.

There are a wide range of procedures employed to track e-mail. For instance, a person of the most basic is a redirect website link. Let us say you click on a backlink in a advertising electronic mail that qualified prospects to the web site for a product you want to get. The hyperlink has been coded to be trackable it will go to yet another server with a wide range of facts, like what browser you are working with or in which you clicked the url from, right before it will take you to the report.

But even though it is reasonably uncomplicated to place a redirect url (for one matter, you can usually place all the supplemental code additional to the URL), there are other methods that arent very so apparent. The method that were seeking at below is tracking pixels.

How does it work? A single tracking pixel is embedded into the e-mail, generally (but not always) hidden in an impression or a connection. When the e mail is opened, code within the pixel sends the details again to the companys server.

There have been some tries to restrict the volume of info that can be transmitted this way. For example, considering that 2014, Google has served all photos by way of its own proxy servers, which could disguise your area from at least some monitoring programs. Extensions such as Ugly Mail and PixelBlock have been created to block trackers on Chrome and Firefox. And there are substitute browsers that emphasize privateness such as Brave and the Tor Browser.

There is also a very simple step you can acquire to keep away from most trackers: quit your electronic mail from routinely loading pictures, since pictures are in which the majority of these pixels disguise. You will not be ready to avoid all of the trackers that may well be hidden in your e mail this way, but you will end many of them.

Note that this will also transform off Gmails dynamic email aspect, which would make e mail messages a lot more interactive.

Turn graphic autoloading off in Gmails settings.

In options for your cellular Gmail account, scroll down to Images.

You can now disable the autoloading of pictures.

Liberal Inches Ahead in Tight Polish Election: Surveys – The Globe Post

A liberal contender could narrowly defeat Polands right-wing incumbent president in a knife-edge election on Sunday, according to two final polls on Friday.

But a third survey handed President Andrzej Duda a 53-47 victory over Warsaw Mayor Rafal Trzaskowski and most analysts insist that the race is too close to call, with voter mobilization seen as a decisive factor.

Backed by the main Civic Platform (PO) opposition party, Trzaskowski has gained traction with voters worried that a Duda win would help the Law and Justice (PiS) party government to push ahead with judicial reforms that have alienated Poland within the EU.

Duda supporters meanwhile believe he offers a better guarantee for a raft of popular PiS social benefits that propelled the party to win a second term last year.

Originally scheduled for May 10, the election was postponed by over a month due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Support for Trzaskowski tallied at 46.4 percent compared to 45.9 percent for Duda in a July 8-9 survey by the independent Kantar pollsters for the commercial TVN24 news channel. But 7.7 percent of the 1,500 respondents said they were undecided.

An IBRIS poll conducted July 8 showed 45.3 percent support for Trzaskowski and 44.4 percent for Duda, with 10.3 percent of the 1,100 respondents declaring they had not yet made a final choice.

A CATI Ipsos poll taken July 7-8 handed Duda a 53-47 victory, with only three percent of the 1,014 respondents saying they were undecided.

The election comes within the broader context of long-standing EU concerns about democratic standards in Poland.

The European Commission has launched four infringement procedures against PiS-authored judicial reforms, which it says test democracy and the rule of law by undermining judicial independence.

Justice John Roberts joins the Supreme Courts liberal wing in some key rulings – The Economist

But he is not tilting left

FOR A THIRD time in as many weeks John Roberts, Americas conservative chief justice, has sided with his liberal colleagues in a big case. After his votes on LGBT rights and immigrant protections, on June 29th he was the linchpin in a 5-4 decision striking down a law that would have limited abortion access in Louisiana. This brought cheers from liberals and howls from conservatives. Josh Hawley, a senator from Missouri and Chief Justice Robertss former clerk, called June Medical Services v Russo, the abortion decision, a disaster and accused his old boss (without naming him) of perpetuat[ing] bad precedent while barely bothering to explain why.

The precedent Mr Hawley deplores is Whole Womans Health v Hellerstedt, a decision in 2016 rejecting a Texas law that purported to protect womens health while regulating about half of the states abortion clinics out of existence. Chief Justice Roberts is no fan of Whole Womans Health, either: he was among the dissenting trio of justices in the 5-3 ruling. This week in June Medical he repeated his disdain for the earlier decision, but explained that stare decisisLatin for let the decision standrequired the court to treat like cases alike. Since the Louisiana requirement that abortion providers must secure admitting privileges at a hospital within 30 miles was nearly identical to the doomed Texas rule, and imposed a similarly substantial obstacle to abortion access, the outcome should be the same. The court must not upend its own judgment a mere four years on.

Yet, with an eye on future cases, the chief justice proceeded to undercut the very precedent he had relied upon to reject Louisianas law. Whole Womans Health said judges should consider both the benefits and burdens of a regulation. But weighing the two against each other, Chief Justice Roberts wrote, is a job for the legislature, not the courts. If a regulation does not make it exceedingly hard for women to procure abortions it would probably pass constitutional muster, no matter how slight or illusory the benefit. This may be read as an invitation to Republican-run states to cook up restrictive abortion laws as long as they can be pitched as not too burdensomeand are not replicas of a law the court has already rejected.

A more radical opportunity to turn the tide on abortion lurks in the chief justices opinion. He emphasises that June Medical is not about Roe v Wade, the ruling in 1973 that protects a womans right to abortion. Though Justice Clarence Thomas, in dissent, charged that the courts abortion jurisprudence remains in a state of utter entropy and ought to be thrown out in its entirety, Chief Justice Roberts demurred. Neither party has asked us to reassess the constitutional validity of the abortion right itself, he wrote. If plaintiffs come askingas they are in Georgia and Alabama, where near-blanket abortion bans are working their way through the courtshe might be willing to reconsider Roe.

There are loopholes in the other liberal victories, too. Though Chief Justice Roberts joined the left side of the bench (and Justice Neil Gorsuch) to bar workplace bias against gay and trans people, the majority opinion leaves open whether employers with religious objections to hiring LGBT workers might, in some circumstances, have a licence to discriminate. And in the case halting President Donald Trumps cancellation of DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals), the chief justice noted that the merits of ending Barack Obamas programme were not the question. Mr Trump could still kill DACA if he would only follow basic standards of administrative law. The chief justice sent the president the same message a year ago when he refused to bless the administrations flubbed quest to add a citizenship question to the 2020 census, but hinted it could try again.

Two other decisions penned by Chief Justice Roberts this week also came out 5-4but with the liberals in their more familiar position as dissenters. The first of these was Seila Law v Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), a challenge to the design of a federal agency set up after the recession of 2007-09. The majority did not break up the CFPB but, dampening its independence, gave the president the power to fire its director whenever he pleases. Then, on June 30th, the chief justice anchored Espinoza v Montana Department of Revenue, requiring any state that funds secular private schools to fund religious schools, too. Both rulings, cloaked as inevitable outgrowths of earlier cases, were in fact profound shifts in the law.

Acting boldly through superficially small stepsand getting credit for aisle-crossing while giving liberals at best temporary solaceseems to be panning out well for Chief Justice Roberts. He is cultivating a reputation for non-partisanship at the Supreme Court while advancing primarily conservative goals. And hes winning: of the 53 cases decided so far this term, he has been in the majority in 52.

Market Wrap: Stocks Tick Downward and so Does Bitcoin, to $9,200 – CoinDesk – CoinDesk

Bitcoin is back at $9,200 Thursday as crypto derivatives helped push its price down and equities closed lower.

When stocks overall trend lower, it often leads to bitcoin prices dropping, said Karl Samsen of Global Digital Assets. He added that as public companies continue to release their dismal quarterly business results, equities will drop even more. Were seeing a W-effect in terms of the COVID-19 reopening of the economy, he told CoinDesk. Thus, the stock markets arent performing well Thursday.

As spot bitcoin headed lower Thursday, the cryptocurrency derivatives market saw its first excitement in a week as sell liquidations popped up on BitMEX. Traders who were long bitcoin saw over $20 million in BitMEX positions exited as price dropped on the spot exchanges such as Coinbase.

Meanwhile, traders continue to place fewer bitcoin option bets, a sign they dont expect crypto volatility to return at least not yet, according to Vishal Shah, an options trader and founder of exchange Alpha5.

When volatility is much lower, as it is now, there is no natural game, said Shah. Its not worth it to sell options down here, and hence activity comes to a standstill, he added. Indeed, the volume on options market is much lower, and the amount of traders using the commodities exchange CME for bitcoin options have dried up in July.

Honestly, it is frustrating for all of us lower volatility and a narrower range, said Christopher Thomas of cryptocurrency broker Swissquote. Well likely explode out of it at some point. We need a trigger.

Nevertheless, things change, especially in uncertain times, said George Clayton, managing partner of New York-based Cryptanalysis Capital. Crypto never stays in one place for long, Clayton said. I dont like the technical picture, but a big move in either direction wouldnt surprise me.

Curve's value on the rise

Ether (ETH), the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, was down Thursday, trading around $239 and slipping 3.6% in 24 hours as of 20:00 UTC (4:00 p.m. ET).

The total value locked in Curve is $71 million, the second-highest for a decentralized exchange, or DEX. Curve is used to quickly trade between stablecoins and has $12 million in daily trading volume, just behind Uniswap for DEXs.

Peter Chan, a trader at Hong Kong-based OneBit Quant, says Curve could see increased volume due to traders moving out of USDC and into other stablecoins amid recent news that CENTRE, the consortium behind USDC, froze $100,000 worth of the token in one account at the behest of an unspecified law enforcement agency.

I saw this news about USDC freezing assets of a few addresses, Chan said. Quite concerned about it. Might see flow on USDC switching to other stablecoins.

Bitcoin Undo Button & Fleeing Firms: Bad Crypto News of the Week – Cointelegraph

Maybe its time to start talking about boring Bitcoin. The dollar price has moved barely half a percentage point over the last week, remaining around the $9,200 mark. Bitcoins holders, though, dont expect the coin to remain a boring store of value forever. A survey by Bitcoin IRA found that 42 percent of the crypto custodians customers expect the price to reach $15,000 by the end of the year. Even that might not prompt sales though. Some 57 percent said they were holding for the long term.

Those optimists might be wrong, though. SteveCrypt0, a popular trader, has suggested that Bitcoin could fall to $6,000 though it would still remain bullish.

Of course, SteveCrypt0 could be wrong and he wouldnt be the only one to make a mistake. A survey has found that 55 percent of respondents have made errors when sending cryptocurrency, and 18 percent have lost funds that way. An Israeli blockchain startup has a solution. Its created a kind of undo button for crypto transfers. (Its a confirmation code).

An undo button might be useful in Russia at the moment. A court in that country has ruled that thieves who kidnapped someone and forced him to send them 99.7 BTC dont have to pay back the Bitcoins. Digital currency isnt property, the judge ruled.

Its not just Russia thats producing strange rules though. US senators are trying to pass a law that will give law enforcement access to encrypted data. It requires manufacturers to include a backdoor that will enable them to decrypt information.

Other countries are doing better. In China, the municipal government of Beijing has released a 20-point plan to make the Chinese capital a global hub for blockchain technologies. In India, a decision by the Supreme Court to reverse laws stopping banks from serving crypto traders and businesses has led to a surge of activity from the countrys crypto app developers.

But its not all good news. After trailblazing the development of blockchain technology, Estonia is grappling with the effects of the European Unions new Know Your Customer laws. Firms are fleeing.

Fortunately, their flights might be easier to book soon. Travel firms are rolling out more blockchain-based experiments and pilot projects to make travel cheaper and more efficient. Those moves come as analytics tools from the Big Four accountancy firms promise to make cryptotrading easier for institutional investors.

And finally, if you ever wanted to see crypto forecaster Mati Greenspan in red lycra and white underpants, heres your chance. Greenspan is Forecaster in the Bad Crypto Podcasts Blockchain Heroes set of digital trading cards. Who said Bitcoin was boring?

Increasing Inclination Towards Healthy Lifestyle To Propel Protein Supplements Market – 3rd Watch News

According to a new report by Transparency Market Research (TMR), a leading market intelligence firm, the globalprotein supplements marketis witnessing a tremendous rise in its valuation, thanks to the increased focus of consumers towards acquiring a healthy lifestyle. With the presence of a large number of players, such as GlaxoSmithKline Plc, Amway Corp., ABH Pharma Inc., Vitacost.com Inc., and Nu Skin Enterprises Inc., the competitive landscape in the market looks highly fragmented, notes the market study.

The level of the competition is expected to get higher in the next couple of years due to the continuous entry of new players in this market. Currently, the leading protein supplement producers are relying more on product development and differentiation for the growth of their business. Over the coming years, they are expected to shift their focus towards expanding their businesses in developing economies to remain in the competition.

TMR report evaluates the global protein supplements market to rise at a CAGR of 5.30% during the period from 2017 to 2022. Protein supplements derived from animal sources have a bigger market than supplements derived from plant sources. TMR notes that the scenario may remain so over the period of the forecast. Hitherto, conventional channels, such as drug stores, convenience stores, and hypermarket/supermarket were the main distribution channels for protein supplements. However, going forward, online stores may gain an edge over these in the coming years.

Geographically, the worldwide protein supplements market registers its presence mainly across Asia Pacific, North America, Latin America, Europe, and the Middle East and Africa. Among these, North America has been leading the global protein supplements market, owing to the increasing awareness among consumers towards healthy living. This regional market is likely to remain on the top over the next few years. However, Asia Pacific is anticipated to report a greater growth rate in the near future, thanks to the continuously rising population, states the research report.

Increasing Attention towards Health and Fitness to Support Demand for Protein Supplements

The significant surge in the attention towards health and fitness fuelled the demand for protein supplements doubly, says a market research analyst at TMR. The mushrooming of health clubs, gyms, and fitness centers across every corner in the world has a big hand in trending health and fitness among consumers, especially the youth. The younger generation is more inclined towards having fit and healthy lifestyle, which, resultantly, has turned them towards protein supplements.

With the trend continuing to create a buzz, the demand for protein supplements is projected to soar in the near future, reflecting positively on the global protein supplements market. The rapid urbanization and the increase in the purchasing power of consumers is also projected to assist this market in reporting a healthy rise over the next few years, notes the market study.

Constantly Fluctuating Protein Product Prices to Hinder Protein Supplements Market Growth Trajectory

In the coming years, the global protein supplements market is expected to witness a high-paced growth. However, the trajectory does not look smooth. The constant fluctuation in the prices of protein products may hamper the growth of this market to some extent. Moreover, due to the high product cost, the sales of protein supplements will also experience a slowdown, especially in developing economies, in the near future.

Nonetheless, the continuous efforts by leading players to introduce reasonable prices for their products may bear fruits and reflect positively on the global protein supplements market. In addition to this, the increasing popularity of sports events and various other fitness activities among youths is likely to support the growth in the global protein supplements market, states the research report.

The review is based on a report by Transparency Market Research, titled, Protein Supplements Market (Product Type Casein Protein Supplements, Whey Protein Supplements, Egg Protein Supplements, MPC Protein Supplements, and Soy Protein Supplements; Source Animal and Plant; Distribution Channel Online Stores, Supermarkets and Hypermarkets, Convenience Stores, and Drug Stores; End-Use Segment Powder Supplements, Bars, and Ready to Drink Supplements) Global Industry Analysis, Size, Share, Growth, Trends, and Forecast 2017 2022.

The ultimate gift, in the wake of a tragedy – Crow River Media

The Falling family Dustin, Morgan and Michelle received a memorial stone from Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato hockey families following the death of Dylan Falling in a late June car crash.

Dustin Falling has taken pride in passing along life lessons to his children. Among the most important was the significance of being an organ donor.

I always said, the Fallings are a donor family, Dustin explained recently during a nearly two-hour conversation that was filled with a mixture of both tears and laughter at a Litchfield restaurant. I asked (my son) Dylan when he was getting his permit if he was going to be a donor, because I feel strongly about it, but I told him its ultimately up to him.

Ill never forget when he filled out the application at the licensing department. They said, Are you going to be a donor? In a loud voice, he said yes, then looked at me and smiled. He was proud of it, and that was really cool.

Little did Falling realize that the importance of organ donation would soon strike his family under the dark cloud of unthinkable tragedy.

Every parents nightmare

The night of Friday, June 5, was nothing out of the ordinary for Dustin and Michelle Falling. Their children, Dylan and Morgan, were out with friends. That led to a quiet dinner on their patio for the couple, who started dating at Litchfield High School before eventually getting married in 1998.

After dinner, Dustin checked the Facebook app on his cellphone, a routine occurrence for the owner of LifeStyle Homes in Litchfield. He saw a post from a friend mentioning a major car crash near Turcks Trees on State Highway 24 that involved a heavy ambulance presence along with a helicopter.

Dustin knew 16-year-old Dylan, was on his way to pick up his best friend, Danny Winky Estrada, who lives in the Forest City area, for a trip to St. Cloud.

Dustin uses a Live 360 app on his phone to track the location of his children, for safety purposes. Dylans location wasnt moving.

I told Michelle, lets not jump to conclusions yet because maybe theyre waiting for the accident to clear, Dustin said.

At 6:17 p.m., Dustin sent a text message to Dylans phone: R U by Turcks Trees? No response. Another text followed: R U by Turcks Trees? Silence. Two more texts with the same message followed, again with no response.

Dustin then called several times with no answer. Meanwhile, Michelle called Winkys mother, Becky. She tried calling her son, who also didnt answer.

Becky said he always answers her calls, so then we started freaking out, Dustin said. We hopped in the truck and hauling (butt) toward to scene.

A few miles from the scene, Dustin received a call from one of Dylans friends. He was crying and said he heard from someone who had driven past the accident that there was a silver Chevy Cruze in the ditch a match for Dylans car.

When we got on site, the helicopter was in the middle of the road and Dylan was already in it, Dustin said. Winky was on a stretcher. I was able to talk to him and made sure he was OK. Dave Lecher, my service guy, was on scene with the Rescue Squad. He said, Im not a doctor, but he looked really good.

He had a little blood from his ear and he was moaning, but he wasnt responsive. On the outside, we didnt see a scratch on him. But, I didnt have a good feeling. Thats the way I am. If he pulled through, I wouldve said I honesty didnt think he wouldve made it. When they go in a helicopter, I just knew it wasnt good.

Anxious days

Dustin and Michelle didnt get to see Dylan until Saturday morning, as he spent most of the night in surgery. Due to COVID-19 regulations, Dustin and Michelle were the only people allowed to see him.

On Sunday, with the help of a compassionate nursing staff, they finagled a way to get Morgan, 14, into the room to see her brother. The family talked to Dylan, held his hand and told stories. He didnt respond, but everyone believes Dylan heard them.

In those couple days, I spent I dont know how many hours Facetiming friends and family to see and talk to him because they couldnt get to see him, Dustin said. So everybody who I could remember reached out to me got to tell stories to him.

The doctor told Dustin and Michelle that it takes 48 to 72 hours to determine the severity of brain damage, but Dustin couldnt get rid of the feeling that his son was likely not going to recover.

Youd get some encouraging words from family members saying theyre young and strong and they can pull through this, but in the back of my mind I just didnt know, Dustin said.

There was a moment of optimism when a nurse administered a test to determine consciousness, and Dylans hand moved slightly and one of his arms twitched.

I had this ounce of hope. I didnt want to think too far ahead and get hopes up, Dustin said. We went to lunch and when we came back they said that wasnt a response to anything and his brain was posturing, which means its basically shutting down and his body was just reacting to that.

We kind of knew at that point. On Sunday, they said they needed to talk to us and told us hes brain dead. Morgan came in and we told her. I asked over and over again if there was any percent chance he could come through, and they said zero. Morgan couldnt accept that. She kept saying, go ask again.

The Falling family daughter Morgan, Michelle and Dustin, and son Dylan posed for a photo last year while on a hike near Bayfield, Wisconsin.

Michelle had recently mentioned how well things were going with the family and that Dylan and Morgan were getting along wonderfully. Dylan would drive her around town and they would hang out in each others rooms.

He had turned a corner from being a kid into a young man who was really good, Dustin said.

When the reality hit that Dylan wasnt coming back, it was Morgan who pulled the family together.

Amazingly enough, Morgan, for a 14-year-old, was amazing, Dustin said. She said we need to do better as a family. She told us we are great parents and they dont give us enough credit. She really spearheaded how we were moving forward. It was truly amazing.

Dylans drive-in visitation on Tuesday, June 16, was attended by hundreds of friends and family at St. Philips Catholic Church in Litchfield. His remains were put to rest a day later after a private funeral that was streamed online for thousands to view.

Organs find a home

Lifesource is a company that specializes in finding recipients for suitable organs. On June 25, the Fallings received a letter from the company stating the following:

Please accept our heartfelt sympathy on the death of your son, Dylan. Our hope is that you can find peace in remembrances of special times together and the warmth of lasting memories. Also, we would like to express our deepest gratitude for your support of Dylans decision to help others through donation. His compassion has given others a second chance on the quality of life.

Dylans legacy lives on in a 68-year-old man, who received his heart in a transplant procedure in Minnesota. A 34-year-old woman received his right kidney in a procedure in Minnesota. A 45-year-old now has Dylans left kidney after a procedure in North Dakota, and a 55-year-old man received his liver in a procedure in California.

In addition, his connective tissue, bone, vessels veins and skin will be donated to dozens of recipients.

The organ harvesting also had a personal touch as Tim Langemo, a longtime family friend and Dustins hockey teammate for Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato, oversaw the procedure. Langemo is a certified registered nurse anesthetist at Hennepin County Medical Center.

Ironically, Dustin knows firsthand the importance of organ donation. He received a kidney from his brother Kyle in a procedure in February 2019. Dustin says he feels better than ever and has resumed a healthy lifestyle that includes frequent post-dinner bike rides past the St. Philips Cemetery to chat with and say goodnight to Dylan.

Foundation in the works

Soon after word spread of the accident, a GoFundMe page In Honor & Memory of Dylan Falling was launched and has since raised more than $20,000. Donations are still being accepted on that site, and plans are in motion to form a foundation to honor Dylans legacy called The1Foundation.

Dustin and Dylan Falling shared a common love for hockey, both playing goalie in the Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato system. In one of Dustin's proudest moments, they celebrated together on the ice when the LDC PeeWee A hockey team qualified for the state tournament, a season in which Dylan started every game in goal.

Dylan, like his father, was a goalie for LDC. His jersey number 1 will be retired by the hockey program until he was set to graduate in 2022.

Dustin coached Dylan throughout the youth ranks. Dylan helped lead LDCs PeeWee team to the state tournament where they lost three one-goal games a rare feat for the program at the youth level.

The foundation will be set up to raise money for several causes not just hockey. Some proceeds will go to help young goalies afford summer camps, something Dustin said Glenn and Ethel Young made possible for him as a kid. Additional proceeds are planned for other youth sports, like buying football cleats for families who cant afford them.

Dustin and Michelle also plan to help food shelves in the Litchfield, Dassel and Cokato communities, along with a scholarship to School of St. Philip, which Dylan attended until moving on to middle school.

In addition, Michelle is helping take the lead on directing funds to help teens who need financial assistance for mental health issues.

Dylan went through some mental health bumps throughout his life and benefitted from working with the local area mental health services from both Woodland Centers and Pathways Therapeutic in Litchfield, and I know there are so many great kids like Dylan who just need someone else to talk to about how to cope and realize challenges are part of the human experience, Michelle said.

There is still a stigma out there related to youth and mental health and maybe we can help more parents who aren't equipped to help their children process what is going on in their minds, she said. We know teens don't always listen to or take their parents advice and need someone outside to talk to and trust. There are so many opportunities we will have to financially support our community. It's exciting to start dreaming and planning how we will be able to give back to the community to help others and live out our sons life legacy.'

Daily life is vastly different at home for the Fallings. The cards and well-wishes have been read, and both Dustin and Michelle occupy their time with work, which Dustin said is a welcome distraction. Theyve also had gatherings with Dylans friends at family property on Lake Stella.

Dustin said he and Michelle dont for a second regret allowing Dylan to go to St. Cloud that night, stressing that would be hypocritical since they used to hound him to stop playing Fortnite in his room and encourage him to go out and drive around with friends.

The coping and grieving process is constant. Dylan wrote a speech about a person he admired for one of his classes at Litchfield High School. The speech was about his father. Michelle asked if Dustin wanted to see the speech on Fathers Day, which was four days after the funeral.

Dustin wasnt ready for that, simply saying this:

Every milestone will be hard. The thing Ill miss more than anything is we were starting to hang out more as father-son, and as a friend and not just a father.

Easy Investing Secrets to an Early Retirement – July 10, 2020 – Yahoo Finance

Accomplishing the financial cushion to retire early is a fantasy for most. Bringing the fantasy to reality is not as difficult as it sounds. The key is straightforward: Save significantly more every month. Sounds simple, correct? One moment.

Typically, advisors peg 15% to 20% of total income saved each month as a goal - but if you want to retire earlier, you probably have to ratchet that number up to 40% or 50% of your income. Not a feat easily accomplished when you review your take into account that a good portion of your paycheck goes to essential, non-negotiable lifestyle items. However, if you are willing to make some serious lifestyle changes and sacrifices, it's possible.

A relatively new movement called Financial Independence, Retire Early (FIRE) has been developed around this "sacrifice and over-save now to retire early" concept. FIRE followers develop strict savings programs (up to 75% of income) and make associated sacrifices like living in small apartments, walking to work every day, restrictive diets, and so on. This path may be too restrictive for many, but the mindset offers some takeaways that might be worth considering.

The first point is to adhere to the key principles of long-term investing, including developing a diversified portfolio that includes stocks with various styles, sizes, sectors and regions.

To accelerate the retirement investment cycle, you can construct a portfolio designed with more risk - and the potential for higher returns - but it should still be appropriately diversified to protect against larger than average market drawdowns that can be difficult to recover from and ruin any chance to accomplish your early retirement goal. There are numerous ways to diversify a portfolio, and how you do so should depend on your age, your risk tolerance, your growth and income needs, and your long-term goals.

Once you've begun saving at a higher rate and you have an investment plan, put that money to work in your plan as quickly as you can. Don't worry about finding the "perfect time" to invest - simply put the money in and keep it in. Let compounding work to help you grow your retirement savings at an exponential rate.

Growth stocks with low beta, strong earnings estimates, positive sales growth, and expected future growth are an excellent way to determine investable growth stocks for your retirement.

Zacks offers investors useful rankings for lower risk growth stocks for retirement portfolios. The following are a few selections that merit a closer look: Bristol Myers Squibb (BMY), Amgen (AMGN) and AbbVie (ABBV). Earnings and revenue has seen growth of at least 5% or higher over the last five years, with a beta of 1 or lower.

Easy Investing Secrets to an Early Retirement - July 10, 2020 - Yahoo Finance

This single mother started with $20,000 and is now an early-retired millionaire heres one thing that helped her – MarketWatch

Jackie Cummings Koski has been a member of her local investment club for 11 years and is now on the board of directors but when she first started out, she had little money to her name and no clear path to financial freedom.

Koski joined the club so that she could improve her knowledge about investing, but it was also where she was able to openly talk about her divorce and find meaningful ways to provide security for herself and her young daughter. Each fellow member became something of a mentor to her, and the discussions were inviting. It was all very uplifting, she said.

Joining the investment club, along with following a budget and spending well under her means, has made the former saleswoman financially independent. In the last 11 years, the single mother has gone from $20,000 in her 401(k) at the time of her divorce to $1.3 million, and shes now a financial counselor to others. She reached financial independence at 46, and retired three years later.

See: This early retiree found her calling during the COVID-19 pandemic

Mentorships, whether one-on-one or in a group, can be crucial to achieving goals. Connecting on a personal level helps. When Koski works with her clients, including high-school students and those in underserved populations, she talks about growing up in rural poverty, with a single father who had a sixth-grade education and was raising six children.

All of those things play into how hard it was in the very beginning, she said. Going from poverty to financially independent thats a path that most people Im working with can get and connect with.

The FIRE movement, short for financial independence, retire early, has no shortage of inspiring stories about people who cut their spending in half, downsized their homes or took on numerous jobs to save as much as possible. But not everyone can follow that path. Some FIRE bloggers may also not be aware of the subtle advantages they had growing up, such as starting out in a middle-class family or living in an area with public transportation to get to the library or a job.

Koski has followed a few of the mainstays of the FIRE movement, however, such as slashing spending and investing much of the rest. As a sales representative at LexisNexis, her salary varied from year to year with an average of about $80,000, but she spent between $40,000 to $45,000 a year and put the rest away.

The early retiree pointed out that this wouldnt be possible everywhere she lives in Ohio, where home prices are not nearly as high as some major hubs like New York City or San Francisco so her mortgage, taxes and insurance amounted to about $1,000 a month. Still, she was careful with her money. Shed buy a luxury vehicle, but one that was three to five years old and with a price tag half of what it was when it was new. She worked only a few miles away from home, so gas wasnt a huge budget item. She didnt deprive herself of spending on food, and would go out to eat for lunch or dinner.

I didnt design my life to live off of $45,000, she said. I backed into it and discovered that my expenses were $45,000. At the same time, she was maxing out all of her investment accounts, including her 401(k), individual retirement account and a Health Savings Account.

Immersing yourself in an environment that supports the same values and goals is important. Koski was the first in her family to graduate college, and didnt have many sources for advice about finances when she was starting out so she figured it out on her own. By changing my environment, I was exposed to different things, she said.

The COVID-19 crisis has the potential to worsen future retirement security, and in some cases has already deteriorated Americans current well-being, but people may be able to use this time to learn more about money and their own personal finances, Koski said. People can turn to the internet, books or maybe even an investing club (socially distanced, of course) to learn more about saving, budgets, investing and personal finance topics.

Savers can also use this time to reflect on whats working financially, what isnt, what goals theyd like to achieve and dig into why they behave the way they do with their money. Breaking down what it would take to reach that goal is an eye-opener. For example, Koski tells students and aspiring investors that saving $50 a week for 40 years can get someone to $1 million.

Youre not going to be saving or investing unless in your mind you believe it will make a difference, she said. It may take a while to really get your head around things like me, but it happens, and when it does, it is very, very powerful.
