GUEST OPINION: Inability to discuss issues will hurt country – The News Herald

On this celebration of the founding of our country and its independence, as for the past many decades, I am very proud to be an American!

I was born in the US, a white male, and am characterized as enjoying "white privilege. Like many others in the South, the privilege that benefited me most was that my parents were totally devoted to each other and to their children. The church was an important part of my life and theirs, and though I strayed and disappointed them at times, I knew that there was a Creator God who created me and all humans in His image, and that every person deserves to be treated as such.

My parents modeled that belief in their attitudes and activities and instilled it in me and my brother. We were taught to work hard and to be fair and honest in all our dealings. We were certainly not wealthy, but we became part of the middle class over the years of working. The Ten Commandments were the foundation of morality and the Golden Rule was the embodiment.

To the best of my knowledge, we never oppressed or mistreated anyone. And without digressing to the "good old days," we didnt know we were poor, our doors were never locked, keys left in the car overnight, and we played in the streets and nearby wooded areas without adult supervision.

This particular 4th is one of great concern to me and my family. Our nation has never in my lifetime been as divided as it is today, and the next election will determine if we continue as a Democratic republic that has been a beacon for liberty in the countries of the world.

I am confounded by the Democratic Partys goal to transform the USA to a socialist country. Anyone that studies history and current affairs would know that every attempt to achieve the government goal of socialism or communism has led to a totalitarian form of government that strips the citizens of their rights and substitutes the government as the sole authority.

I can only conclude that the Democratic Party and the Cultural Elite is trying to achieve the power over our country by fueling the fires of discontent and divisiveness.

As a Christian, the platforms of the two parties leads me no alternative but to vote Republican. The Democratic Party has demonstrated that Christians have no place in their Party. The major voting blocks aligning with the Party are Planned Parenthood, the LBGTQ organizations, the activist Black organizations, billionaire elitists, and liberal press and "progressive" education groups.

Any Democrat who shows any concern about full support of any of these groups is essentially drummed out of the party. The motivating force behind all these is the "feelings" of the individual. If you disagree with their goals, youre labeled a racist, a homophobe, or a woman hater. The option of having a disagreement that leads to discourse and discussion is no longer viable. Freedom of speech is only viable if you agree with the progressive agenda.

Our Country has survived many crises in the past. We were founded on a model that understood the nature of Divine Providence, and the understanding that unless powers are divided and checks and balances provided, the rights of the citizens could suffer.

And by the way, the Founding Fathers and most of the signers of the Declaration of Independence did so because they were committed to the principals it detailed. Most of them lost their homes and their lives for that stand. Our Constitution is unique and has evolved over time, always to improve and protect the rights of all citizens. Our government isnt perfect and will never be, largely because we have lifetime politicians who are always running for reelection and seeking power and fame.

That is a situation our founding fathers never foresaw. However, throwing out the Constitution and starting over will destroy the only society that has continued for so long to protect the rights and privileges of all citizens. Think carefully about the next election.

The 5 Very Best Hair Steamers and How TF to Use Them Correctly

I get it: There are legit so many hair steamers on the market right now that it's kinda impossible to know which ones are worth the $$$ (and, like, which ones are worth skipping). So rather than leaving you to read the fine print of every Amazon review (or, worse, buy one that lowkey destroys your hair), I went ahead and got a professional hairstylist to share everything you should know about hair steamers for natural hairincluding, yes, how to actually use them correctly. Keep reading for the ultimate guide, plus the best steamers to shop RN.

If you ask the experts (and anyone who has tried them), the answer is a thousand times yes. When you stick your head under a steamer, the moist heat helps hydrate strands, promote scalp circulation, and open the hair cuticle (which can help amp up the effects of your hair and scalp products, especially if you have low-porosity hair). Oh, and they're also relaxing as f*ck. According to Anthony Dickey, hairstylist and founder of Hair Rules, hair steamers are great for four things in particular: hydrating dry hair, soothing your scalp, pre-cleansing on wash day, and deep conditioning.

"Steamers can do a lot for anyone who's trying to get their natural, dry texture to be softer," says Dickey. "It just makes the hair more manageable so you have more styling options." He also adds that wavy and straight hair textures can benefit from steamers, tooparticularly those with longer lengths or color-treated hair. "Everyoneregardless of their hair texture and hair typeis looking for their hair to be more manageable and shiny," he says. And that's where steaming can help.

If you're hung up on exactly how to use a hair steamer the "right" way, don't freak: "There really aren't any real rules for using a hair steamer," he says, especially if you're working with a hair texture that's naturally dry (but, hey, I like tutorials too, so if you need a visual, check out this tutorial on how to steam type 3 curls, and this tutorial on steaming type 4 hair).

There is one thing you'll want to keep in mind though: Your steaming sessions shouldn't last any longer than 30 minutes (in fact, most experts say 20 minutes is the sweet spot). You actually run the risk of damaging your hair bonds when you over-expose your hair to steam, so even though you might be tempted to sit under your steamer for hours on end, it's best to set an alarm for 20 or 30 minutes max.

Once you've got the feeling of steaming down, though, here are Dickey's favorite ways to use a steamer:

That depends entirely on your hair. Those with extremely dry or damaged hair can steam as frequently as once a week, whereas folks with minimal damage can pare back to once a month. At the end of the day, only you (and, okay, probably your hairstylist) know what's best for your hair. Just remember the golden rule: No steaming for longer than 30 minutes at a time.

Glad you asked! There are three types of at-home hair steamershooded, tabletop, and cappedand it's all about personal preference. It's really about what feels comfortable, what you're used to, and what you have space for. But to make things extra easy for you, I rounded up the five best hair steamers to try at home, below.

Tron Coaster Construction Progress at Magic Kingdom – Inside the Magic

Inside the Magic is following along with all of the safety protocols put in place by Disney in order to remain safe during this unprecedented time.

During todays AP Preview of Magic Kingdom park, our reporters have experienced everything from seeing the renovation of Cinderella Castle to new health and safety measures to social distancing on transportation to changes to attraction experiences.

Theyre also getting the chance to see construction progress first-hand. We have new photos of the progress on the highly anticipated Tron Lightcycle Power Run roller coaster that is being built in Tomorrowland.

According to the Wikipedia entry about the Tron coaster, which is based on the Tron attraction at Shanghai Disneyland, the new Magic Kingdom thrill ride is described as:

Tron Lightcycle Power Run is a semi-enclosed launched steel motorbike roller coaster attraction at Shanghai Disneyland Park, and an upcoming attraction at the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World. Based on the Tron series, the attraction takes guests on a ride through the Grid on their own light cycle.

Last year, Disney shared an official rendering of how the completed Tron Lightcycle Power Run coaster will look situated next to Space Mountain.

The Tomorrowland Tron Lightcycle Power Run ride is slated to open in 2021 for Walt Disney World Resorts 50th Anniversary Celebration.

There have long been rumors of a Tron 3 movie that follows the storyline of Tron Legacy (2010). Recently, Disney executive Mitchel Leib spoke out about the possibility of Tron 3 coming to fruition.

Leib stated:

were looking at making a sequel to Tron now, were looking at Tron 3. And weve got a great script, I mean a really phenomenal script that were very excited about. Whereas the timing wasnt right to have done it years ago, I think we feel like the timing is right now, and I feel like weve learned a lot of lessons from that last movie.

It would be the perfect tie-in to announce Tron 3 on the day the Tron coaster debuts in Magic Kingdom!

Are you excited to see Disney World Tron roller coaster construction progress?

Inside ‘Boogaloo’ movement ‘armed to the teeth’ and calling for overthrow of US – Daily Star

Anti-government protesters say they are organising a massive day of action in the United States, with many purporting to be part of a secretive movement called the Boogaloo, or Boogaloo Bois.

Activists have told Daily Star Online they're not a far-right movement, as they're critics claim, but openly say they want to overthrow the US government.

Some even call for a "Second US Civil War," as they say they're linking up with Black Lives Matter activists and anti-coronavirus lockdown groups to form a broader coalition.

The origins of the Boogaloo movement are difficult to pin down, counter-terrorism analyst Javed Ali told Daily Star Online.

Speaking from the US, he said the origins of the movement date back to the early 2010s, but have some of their ideological roots in earlier anti-government or overtly far-right groups from the 1990s.

Recognised by their distinctive Hawaiian shirts and iconography full of memes, such as Pepe the Frog, a number of gun-toting "Boogaloo Bois" have been spotted at recent BLM demonstrations appearing to show their support for the movement.

Although some of the movement's members' far-right views might be seen as being at odds with those of Black Lives Matter, Ali says it makes sense when you consider their shared anti-government stance.

"The coronavirus crisis and Black Lives Matter protests are both inspiring debates in the US about government overreach," Ali said.

"This anti-government philosophy is first and foremost what the movement is about."

The name Boogaloo comes from the 1980s breakdancing film Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo, Ali explained.

Over the past decade, forums such as 4Chan and 8Chan would share memes and jokes about a "Civil War 2", rhyming with Boogaloo.

Filled with inside jokes and references, the posts would often make it difficult to see where the line was between trolling and real intentions.

Big Luau, code for a revolution or civil war, was also used by some members of the forums.

But as Ali explained, the movement's lack of a core set of beliefs makes it extremely difficult to be certain of what they want.

Although momentum for the movement online picked up in the middle of the last decade, Ali says it has accelerated since the election of US President Donald Trump.

Supporters are a mix of Second Amendment gun rights activists, anti-government protesters, libertarians and some far-right white supremacists.

Their origins can be found in some of the touchstone anti-government events of the 80s and 90s, including the Ruby Ridge siege, the deadly Oklahoma City bombing and the siege at Waco, Texas, with memes referencing all of these widely shared online.

Speaking to Daily Star Online, supporters of the movement shared their own beliefs and reasons for support.

One, who asked to remain anonymous, called the Boogaloo "a revolution taking place in Americans' hearts".

They denied the group was far-right, saying they are "pro-capitalism," adding: "We do not discriminate. We welcome people of all colours, races, sexual orientation and creeds."

The supporter went on: "We are not trying to exploit the BLM movement, but rather we support their right to free speech."

They also slammed the lockdowns taken by state governments in response to the Covid-19 health crisis, saying: "It's up to the individual to be responsible for their health."

Another supporter, calling themselves Virginia Knight, told Daily Star Online: "The Boogaloo movement doesn't have any set main goal but we have many goals throughout our movement including recognising the injustice that many cops cause civilians while also respecting many.

"We also believe that a revolution will take place sooner or later as we had one with Great Britain in 1775 and the government will be replaced with a cleaner fresher model."

They added: "We also hope to raise awareness to the fact that there are many of us likeminded people who are armed to the teeth and believe in freedom."

On the link to Black Lives Matter protests, they went on: "Many people scream racism when they see an armed white man because the thing the government fears most is unity among the armed white man and the armed black man.

"We strive to bring about that unity."

A third supporter, who spoke to the Daily Star under the condition of anonymity, described himself as "the son of a single Hispanic mother born in the United States from Hispanic immigrants and Native Northern Americans".

He called this year's July 4th a major milestone in his country's history, and said ordinary people were becoming aware of the widespread oppression carried out by a "brainwashed militarised police force".

The supporter went on: "The 4th of July is our supposed holiday of freedom and I know more Americans than ever are questioning said freedoms."

He also said growing public anger had grown since the death of Jeffrey Epstein and many powerful people's alleged connections to the convicted paedophile.

"People have wanted to say that we're far-right when in actuality we lie in the centre of the political spectrum," he said.

"Recently far-right groups have been angry with us because we've chosen not to side with them and have been offering BLM protesters protections from these groups.

"Black Lives Matter have been fighting for a lot of the same things as us before us and it's important that we protect people exercising their rights."

But Javed Ali maintains most of the movement's members' beliefs "tend to align with the far-right".

He says if this year's July 4 protests by the Boogaloo Bois remain peaceful, there is unlikely to be a further crackdown beyond the arrests of Boogaloo followers already made the past few months in Denver, Las, Vegas, and northern California.

Despite that, law enforcement is now focusing more attention on this movement and the potential threat it poses.

Last month, a US Air Force sergeant Steven Carillo with alleged links to the Boogaloo movement was arrested following the murder of a federal security officer.

David Patrick Underwood was shot in an ambush outside the courthouse in Oakland, California during Black Lives Matter protests in the city.

The FBI claims Carillo used his own blood to write various phrases on the bonnet of a stolen car, including "boog" and "stop the duopoly", referring to America's two-party system.

Earlier in June, three men with ties to the Boogaloo movement and the US military were arrested in Las Vegas and charged with "conspiracy to cause destruction" over allegations they aimed to used Molotov cocktails on police officers during protests in the city following the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

Simple ways to release workplace stress – Daily Pioneer

Nowadays, stress is everywhere. We are going through a never-seen coronavirus pandemic that is affecting our physical as well as mental health.

As the majority of us are currently struggling to work from home owing to the pandemic and yet stay productive, stress related to work can also affect our efficiency and overall professional life.

Here are some simple biohacking steps to reduce workplace stress and boost your productivity:

1) Eat healthy food:

You know food has the power to keep your emotions intact. Eating healthy food, which includes vitamins, proteins, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds can help you give the required energy to stay physically and emotionally fit. You can perform well at your tasks with full concentration, which can easily reduce the stress of work piling up and performance issues.

2) Maintain a regular sleep schedule:

An ideal sleep schedule should be of at least 8 to 9 hours a day. However, as we are now not traveling much outside and staying indoors only to complete our household and office work, at least 7 hours of good quality sleep can put the brain and mind to rest and help you stay away from negative and anxious thoughts.

3) Avoid certain things:

Avoiding coffee altogether or at least reducing the intake of coffee can help you reduce your stress levels. Not only that but eliminating the intake of lots of sugar from your diet can also help you to keep your blood sugar in control and improve your cognitive function. Before going to sleep, say NO to social media updates, watching television and mobiles as it makes you thoughts wander about what is happening in the world around you and thus, affecting your sleep cycle.

4) Follow a regular exercise routine:

Regular physical activities are a must for sound physical and mental health. The more you stay active physically, the more you will have no time for unwanted thoughts that can keep you engaged for a longer period of time. Can't go swimming, jog or walk right now? That's fine, many yoga asanas and exercises can be performed at home by watching YouTube or fitness television channels. Remember, health is wealth and no wants to work with a tired person ever. Hence, in order to give your best in your professional and personal lives, stay physically active.

5) Try Nootropics to reduce stress and increase your mental focus:

Piracetam, choline, Deprenyl, Ashwagandha, Omega 3, and others are nootropics i.e. smart drugs, which can improve your mental focus and help you perform better at whatever task you take in your hands. If you feel that you get tired by the end of the day after your work schedule, it is time to improve your mental capacity by trying out some safe and test mind-enhancing substances, which will help you to enhance your memory, mental speed and focus. Bio-Hacking is do it yourself scientific approach of experiments on the body, including the food we eat, the music we listen, the lifestyle we follow. It involves monitoring what happens in thebodyand creatingtakeawaysof what is working and what is not working. The above tips worked for many and you can also explore them for fixing stress issues.

Divya Pandit masters the art of spiritual healing – Mid-day

Many of us are curious about the mystical nature of tarot, but no one understands the craft better than Divyaa Pandit, a tarot card reader, spiritual healer and life coach based in Mumbai. Divyaa has been been a proficient healer for over 10 years and provides a wide arsenal of holistic services under the banner of her company White Light Healing Centre.

An entrepreneur at heart, she started off as a homemaker and mother to four children and built her spiritual practice from scratch. Today, she has a plethora of clients all over the world that swear by her skills and services. Her instinctual clairvoyance - a skill she was gifted with since birth - drew her to the craft of tarot card reading.

Once she mastered the cards, Divyaa continued to study the spiritual arts, and soon became proficient in reiki, crystal healing, shamanic healing, theta healing, inner child healing, access consciousness healing, dream healing and more.

Apart from her affinity for the above, Divyaa is also well-versed with the spiritual aspects human psyche and the universe, due to her advanced knowledge of neuro-linguistic programming (NLP), numerology, hypnotherapy and past life regression.

Her years of work with her clients seeking to mend problems of the subconscious led her to the breakthrough method of healing, Matrix Resolution Therapy. This is a form of therapy where Divyaa and her group of mediums work together to delve into the subconscious minds of those who seek this healing and unravel their blocks from within.

Despite her expertise in several kinds of healing, Divyaa has always considered tarot card reading amongst her most adept services. Divyaa has a unique approach to tarot card reading. She believes that tarot can be used as a tool of inner wisdom and guidance.

Her version of tarot is an amalgamation between the person seeking answers and the reader herself - a congruence of energies that create a gateway for the cards to reveal insight into the past, present and future. While technical knowledge of the craft is important, Divyaa also believes in the innate intuition of the reader, which determines the accuracy of every reading.

Known widely as the 'Remedy Queen', Divyaa is also well-versed with crystal, herbs and home remedies that can help heal spiritually induced troubles. She believes in the powerful relationship between crystals and tarot, especially how one can show a clear pathway while the other can help guide you through it.

It’s time to talk about spiritual wellbeing | ArtsHub United Kingdom – ArtsHub UK

Artists have a unique connection to spirituality though they are wary about talking about it, according to Dr Jackie Bailey.

Australians dont like the s word. We blush the second someone mentions spirit outside the context of a team, or soul other than as a descriptor of a particular genre of music. But if artists are to survive the current crisis, we need to swallow our secular pride and start talking about spiritual wellbeing.

Spiritual wellbeing is all about the stuff we, as artists, engage with every day. The term refers to a sense of meaning, purpose, connection and transcendence. As artists, so much of what we do is about connecting at a deep, spiritual level. We are knee deep in the business of making meaning.

If we are working at the level of souls (the other s word! No apologies!), then we must be mindful of our own spiritual wellbeing. To be spiritually well we need both the skills and the environment to nourish our sense of meaning and connection.

The skills of spiritual wellbeing

Good news! Three of the four skills of spiritual wellbeing are ones which artists have in spades: mindfulness, courage and reflection.

As we know, practicing mindfulness is about bringing ourselves to attend to the present moment. This allows artists to silence the inner critic and get to work. Mindfulness is also foundational to spiritual wellbeing because it re-connects us, however fleetingly, with the wonder of being alive.

Acknowledging the miracle of existence can just as easily lead to existential despair and despondency as it can to hope. Nobel Prize-winning physicist Steven Weinberg wrote in his book The First Three Minutes that, It is hard to realise that this [Earth] is just a tiny part of an overwhelmingly hostile universe [] The more the universe seems comprehensible, the more it seems pointless. This is why courage is the second skill of spiritual wellbeing.

Deciding to live as though life is meaningful is not a given, but something which has to be constantly and wilfully re-chosen. Viktor Frankl, psychiatrist and survivor of Auschwitz, built the branch of psychology known as logotherapy on his observations that the ability to live as though life is meaningful was the key differentiator, all other things being equal, between those who made it out of Auschwitz, and those who did not.

Courage is not an innate quality, but like mindfulness is something which can be cultivated. As artists, we are deft at practicing courage. Every time we tear up dozens of seemingly acceptable pages or sand down the canvas and start again, we are exercising the courage muscle.

Reflection, the third skill of spiritual wellbeing, is also one which artists excel at, integral as it is to a fertile artistic practice. We are adept at constantly interrogating our work hence the tearing up of pages and the sanding down of canvases. We pause and check in with ourselves and the work: is this piece telling the truth it needs to tell?

The fourth skill of spiritual wellbeing is one which we are good at facilitating for others, but not always fantastic at doing for ourselves: connecting. Our work is all about connecting ideas, people, thoughts, feelings, worlds. But sometimes in the process of doing our work, we disconnect from others and even the world around us.

We need to cultivate connection with people in our inner circle, as well as those we encounter in the business of daily life, and with the natural environment.

Practicing the skill of connection might involve a weekly phone call with a friend, going for a walk in nature, and chatting with the shop assistant at the local store.

Using the language of spiritual wellbeing

Even if you have mad skills in reflection, courage, connection and mindfulness, it can be difficult to maintain your spiritual wellbeing in a society which does not have a language to talk about spiritual wellbeing, and we are part of the problem.

We talk about widespread burnout in the arts. This is a productivity term which conceals the underlying, creeping dread that our society, our fellow humans, think that what we do is meaningless.

We talk about being exhausted from working on the smell of an oily rag, but what we dont mention is the loneliness, the isolation, the feeling that we have been cut off from the tribe we so lovingly and longingly helped to build.

We talk about the arts being under-valued, but what we dont say is how much it hurts to be told, over and over, that we do not matter.

We use these terms to be part of a political discourse which has become dominated by economic language over the last thirty-odd years. We compromise our value when we argue for it solely in the language of economics. We need to talk about the spiritual significance of what we do, as well as the spiritual toll that being consistently under-valued takes on our ability to do it.

Patience: The best remedy for every problem – Free Press Journal

Rajyogi Brahmakumar Nikunj ji

Patience is one of those virtues that can transform a moment of high anxiety into quiet relaxation, a rush of mental agitation into the smooth flowing river that life can be. While most people might admit to being impatient in some area of their life, not many know how to free themselves from their quickening anxieties. So how can we be more patient? Can we just decide to become a patient person? Can patience be a permanent thread woven through our personality? How do we create patience?

Being patient is a creative process. It involves bringing together a variety of ingredients in an initial process of visualisation. The first step is to admit and acknowledge that our impatient trait is entirely our own creation. So, its not the late train or failing delivery service, its us that make us impatient. We have created and sustained the impatient habit, so we can create and sustain patience. And like all our other creations the process begins on the screen of our mind. That is where we conceive, believe and achieve patience in rehearsal, before we step onto the stage of daily life.

Our inner peace can only travel from our heart to our mind when we no longer want to change what is. The moment we accept everyone and everything as we find them, without any resistance, is the moment we are able to embrace life in its totality, as it is. That alone is quite a challenge for many of us as we have a tendency to spend too much time and energy in our minds. Its there that we judge others, hurry others and try to fix the problems of the world, under the illusion that its our job, and that we can!

Our peace and our acceptance are like two primary colours which, when mixed together, create contentment. We cannot be patient unless we are content in our self, with our self and with the world, at this moment now. This also requires the realisation that there is only now. Only then will all attempts to escape into the future or hide in the past, come to an end.

Gina Christian

By Gina Christian Posted July 10, 2020

Shortly after I graduated college, I began to experience panic attacks. If youve never had them, count your blessings; if youve suffered from them, my sincerest sympathies. When one occurs, your heart races, you cant catch your breath, and you feel as if youre going to die or go insane, or perhaps both.

The psalmist accurately captured the overwhelming sense of such fear: I have sunk into the mire of the deep, where there is no foothold. I have gone down to the watery depths; the flood overwhelms me (Ps 69:3).

As I began to unravel why I was beset by these episodes, I realized that what seemed to be triggering the terror was a deep anxiety over the future, a feeling that I didnt at all know (and wasnt in the least control of) how the coming days, weeks and months would unfold. By the grace of God, I learned to counter the attacks through prayer, Scripture and some commonsense strategies.

But recently, those old worrying sensations stole over me as I sat at my kitchen table, buried in emails, holding on the phone for a plumber and mulling the mornings sobering news headlines.

After Id hung up from the call, weeks of global crisis and ongoing suffering closer to home got the better of me: a tear dropped onto my lashes, followed by another, and soon I was weeping.

Please, Jesus, I whispered. Everything looks so dark, and I do not see the way ahead.

A quiet reply stirred in my heart: You dont need to see the way. You only need to see Me.

The gentle rebuke calmed me, and in the days since, Ive started to reflect more on just how much I actually trust the Lord, and to what extent I believe that his plan is the better and the only one, in the scope of eternity. So often my surrender to the divine will is more of a negotiated treaty, with numerous conditions. Quite honestly, I want Jesus, but on my terms.

Yet qualifiers and clauses dont hold up when youre faced with the impossible, and no one knew that better than Jehoshaphat, king of Judah.

As a ruler, he was vigorous and resourceful; he enacted spiritual reforms to eliminate idolatry (2 Chron 17:3-4, 6) and kickstarted business in the kingdom, building strongholds and store cities in Judah and carrying out many works (2 Chron 17:12, 13).

Given his energy and initiative and the more than 1 million soldiers he could muster you might think he wouldnt be completely thrown by the threat of invasion. However, advised that the Moabites, the Ammonites and with them some Meunites had amassed themselves against him, he was frightened (2 Chron 20:1, 3).

In response, Jehoshaphat proclaimed a fast, gathered the people and then led them in one of the most humble and heartfelt prayers in Scripture: We are powerless before this vast multitude that is coming against us. We ourselves do not know what to do, so our eyes are turned toward you (2 Chron 20:12).

King though he was, Jehoshaphat didnt hesitate to admit this enemy utterly blocked his royal vision. In looking to the Lord, though, he saw the path forward more clearly than he himself could have imagined. The spirit of the Lord, speaking through Jahaziel, assured Jehoshaphat that he was on the right track: The Lord says to you: Do not fear or be dismayed at the sight of this vast multitude, for the battle is not yours but Gods (2 Chron 20:15).

Jehoshaphat obeyed, and appointed a chorus of people to praise and worship the Lord as the army marched forth. As they lifted their voices, the Lord laid an ambush against the enemy troops, and each helped destroy the other (2 Chron 20:22, 23). So complete was the triumph that it took Judah three days to gather the spoils (2 Chron 20:25).

Afterwards, the people assembled in the Valley of Berakah, the name of which means blessing in Hebrew. They returned in exultation to Jerusalem, for the Lord had given them joy over their enemies (2 Chron 20:27) and he who himself is the Way (Jn 14:6) will do the same for us, if only we will fix our eyes on him alone.

Msgr. Joseph Prior

By Msgr. Joseph Prior Posted July 10, 2020

(See the readings for the 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time, July 12)

The doorbell rang in the late afternoon. When I opened the door three men I had never met before were standing there. Good afternoon, I said. Praised be Jesus Christ, came the response. Immediately one of the men, named John, said: Were here to proclaim the Good News.

He then told the story of his youth and the broken relationship he had with his father who was involved with drugs. He spoke of the damage that addiction had on his relationship and the anger and resentment he felt toward his father. He then said that changed once he had encountered Jesus. He said that through the Word he learned of the Lords great love and the power of mercy.

Over time he grew more and more of aware of that mercy through the sacraments of confession and Eucharist. Strengthened by the Lords grace, he was able to be reconciled with his father. The wounds of his youth were healed and now he finds joy in sharing the Good News and helping others find the same healing.

The power of Gods love is immense. Many times the work is unseen or not recognized like the dew that shows up in morning (cf. Eucharistic Prayer II). Or it can be likened to the rain and snow that water the earth (cf. Isaiah 55, first reading). While the rain and snow can be seen, one does not see the effects of that water on seeds and plants until much later (weeks and months sometimes). The water helps to break open the seed and start the plant to grow. It helps it grow strong until one day it can bear fruit. All the while the source of growth is unseen except for its effects.

The Gospel passage for todays liturgy from the Gospel according to Matthew is a long one. At the center of that reading are the words:

But blessed are your eyes, because they see,and your ears, because they hear.Amen, I say to you, many prophets and righteous peoplelonged to see what you see but did not see it,and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.

These words help us to understand the entire passage. Jesus speaks to his disciples, those who have accepted him into their lives and their hearts. He is the Word who is heard. He is the Word who is seen. The disciples have entered a relationship with him. They have seen him. They have heard him.

Whats more is that they have taken this experience to heart. Their lives have been tremendously changed for the better because of this relationship. They have found healing. They have found mercy. They have found love. They have found joy. They have found peace.

These are the ones whose hearts are like the good soil who have not only received the seed but taken it in. The seed is then transformed into the wonderful plant that yields fruit. So much so that it is 30 or 60 or 100 fold.

Anyone who has planted, whether full-time farmers or home gardeners, knows the joy of a bountiful harvest. That joy is similar when one witnesses the abundance of grace that comes from an encounter with Christ.

God is the one who sows the seed of his Word which is a powerful force for good. As already mentioned, Isaiah likens it to the rain and snow which brings forth seed (which will propagate the abundance) and bread to nourish the body. He says: So shall my word be that goes forth from my mouth; my word shall not return to me void, but shall do my will, achieving the end for which I sent it.

I was heartened by the witness offered by the man visiting last week. He spoke of the power of Gods love and mercy and how it has changed his life. You could see by the joy in him as he spoke of Gods goodness, the fruits of which needed to be shared. It is not every day that we hear a profession of such saving grace; nevertheless the saving grace continues to be poured forth every day in lives of the faithful.

God is at work. His invitation is always there. Open hearts receive it regularly and are transformed in love. Blessed indeed are the eyes that see and the ears that hear.

Steak House Ribera: Wrestling’s spiritual home in Japan – The Japan Times

Hey, you!

Thats right you, the puny weakling reading this article! You think this is a story about vegan food? Wrong! This is a story about professional wrestling and meat!

Its also a story about a small, family-run steakhouse in Tokyo whose name has acquired legendary status around the globe through word of mouth alone.

We didnt set out to become famous, says Toshihiko Yamaguchi, who runs the Meguro branch of Steak House Ribera, which has become something of a pilgrimage site for professional wrestlers from all over the world. Wrestlers from overseas just came here and took the place to their hearts.

If youre not a fan of wrestling, chances are youve never heard of Steak House Ribera. Yamaguchis father, Norikazu, opened the first branch, which has room for around 10 customers seated along a counter, in Tokyos Gotanda area in 1972. A second, which seats around 30 and is situated about a 20-minute walk from Meguro Station, opened five years later.

Managing a legacy: Toshihiko Yamaguchi, who now runs the Meguro branch of Steak House Ribera, grew up surrounded by professional wrestlers. | Yoshiaki Miura

The elder Yamaguchi originally had no interest in wrestling, but his restaurants destiny was shaped by a random visit by American grappler Bruiser Brody in the late 1970s. Brody, who was on the lookout for some steak during a trip to Tokyo, was so enamored by Ribera that he asked Yamaguchi to make him a jacket with the restaurants name on it. Norikazu obliged and gave it to Brody as a present.

Brody began wearing the jacket at wrestling shows around the world, which aroused the curiosity of other wrestlers, who had never heard of Steak House Ribera. Gradually, they began to check the place out for themselves whenever they visited Tokyo, and Yamaguchi created more jackets to give to wrestlers as presents.

Before long, visiting Ribera had become a rite of passage for overseas wrestlers making the trip to Japan, and the satin bomber jacket with the bulls-head logo on the breast became a must-have item for any self-respecting wrestler.

Todays wrestlers started off as fans, and they grew up seeing people like Brody and Hulk Hogan wearing Ribera jackets, says the younger Yamaguchi. Its often said that for a wrestler, being given your own Ribera jacket is proof that youve made it.

We dont sell the jackets, he continues. We give them as presents, as a token of our appreciation. If we thought about it only in terms of publicity, the wrestlers would see through it. Thats not our intention. It started purely with us wanting to give Brody a present. More than the publicity, it made us happy to see Brody wearing the jacket in wrestling magazines. That feeling was what made us want to give out more.

Status symbol: Steak House Riberas bulls head logo has become an iconic feature of its signature satin bomber jackets. | Yoshiaki Miura

Yamaguchi says that thousands of wrestlers have visited Ribera over the years, and the photos that cover the walls, ceiling and shop front including stars like Hogan, The Rock, The Undertaker and John Cena, all clad in Ribera jackets bear testament to the restaurants standing in the wrestling world.

Also making several appearances in the photos alongside the wrestlers at various stages of his life is the younger Yamaguchi himself. Now 45, he grew up in an environment where visits from star grapplers from overseas were a regular occurrence, and he was even invited to stay twice at the Minneapolis home of wrestler Road Warrior Animal.

Having been around professional wrestlers his whole life, Yamaguchi says there is often a gap between their public image and reality.

Among the wrestlers I met when I was younger, you would get two types, he says. Some played the part of villains, but in real life they were very serious. They were the complete opposite of how they appeared in the ring. Others would finish their match and then go out drinking and carousing in Roppongi, then get up for their next match without going to bed. Some looked like hellraisers, but actually they would go straight back to their hotel after their matches. It was interesting, the different types you would get.

Yamaguchi says trouble was not unheard of during that period, and the police would have to be called in if wrestlers with a real-life grudge happened to show up at Ribera at the same time and things got out of hand.

Nowadays, wrestlers from overseas visit Ribera less frequently, with the number of shows they do in Japan far fewer than in the golden age of the 1980s and 90s. The majority of Riberas current customers have little interest in wrestling, and many even wonder who the hulking characters flexing their muscles in the photos are.

Instead, they come for the simple menu, based around good-quality steak, which you can order in half- or full-pound cuts. The ambitious can tackle Riberas eating challenge: Those who can eat three servings of jumbo steak and rice within 30 minutes win 10,000 (and the meal for free).

For overseas wrestlers visiting Japan, however, Ribera will always be their spiritual home.

I cant count the number of wrestlers who have been here, says the younger Yamaguchi. There arent really any famous wrestlers from overseas who havent been here.

Its a real honor, he continues. It wasnt something that we set out to make happen. We werent trying to use the wrestlers to become famous. They just liked the place. It makes me really proud that these people would come all the way here from their own countries.

In line with the nationwide state of emergency declared on April 16, the government is strongly requesting that residents stay at home whenever possible and refrain from visiting bars, restaurants, music venues and other public spaces.

Letter to the Editor: Liberals trying to push communist ideas – Delaware State News – Delaware State News

It was nice to see that Mike Apgar survived our initial wave of the COVID-19 virus. Im sad to see, however, that nothing happened to assuage his delusional hatred (Hail to Mr. Tough Guy, our divider in chief, June 17) for a person whose only offense was defeating a lying, traitorous Democrat, Hillary Clinton.

I particularly enjoy how the party line is so easily parroted by the liberal left wing. The most glaring was Mr. Apgars blind insistence on the mainstream media feed that all the demonstrations were about the summer of love and singing Kumbaya. Perhaps a trip to New York or Seattle in person might actually enlighten him, though I doubt it.

The distortions of fact and outright lies to push a communist agenda is simply amazing. No president has ever endured the continual harangue that President Trump has. The Constitution was subverted before the president was inaugurated. Using a fake dossier that the former secretary of state (who clandestinely sold a third of Americas uranium to Russia) had paid for, the Democrats began a Russian collusion scheme.

For three-quarters of his term, the president fought that, while managing to rid America of burgeoning bureaucratic requirements, bring about unmatched economic development and bring back manufacturers whod left during the previous eight years. A former vice president, having openly admitted to committing quid pro quo to stop investigation of his son, claimed that the president had committed quid pro quo in investigating his lawlessness.

President Trump closes the border to protect the nation from the COVID-19 virus and is castigated as racist and xenophobic. Yet when that move proved true, he was skewered for not having done it sooner. Forced to literally close the country, he halved the doom-and-gloom medias economic impact forecast. Unemployment was at its lowest point in 50 years, but just as soon as businesses were forced to close, these same doomsayers started blaming the president as jobs numbers plunged.

Now, Mr. Apgar plays the Democrat sound bite that the president hid in the bunker when his peaceful protesters tried to storm the White House grounds. (For someone whose cherished candidate has spent four months in his basement, he ignored that no president is given a choice by the Secret Service when and if he is taken to the bunker, as was the case here.) Presidents dont hide, they are protected.

Mr. Apgar is likely to have spent four years trying to set brush fires in peoples minds while one of our greatest presidents has, without a single Democrat supporting him, rebuilt this nations standing throughout the world, while waving what the former First Lady referred to as that damned flag.

During the McCarthy witch hunts of the 1950s, he was finally exposed by Boston lawyer, Joseph Welch, who stopped the proceedings and said, Let us not assassinate this lad further, Senator. You have done enough. Have you no sense of decency? Thats the question I would love to ask these rabid liberals, but sadly, I fear I already know their answer.

Far-Right US Facebook Groups Pivot to Attacks on Black Lives Matter – Voice of America

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - A loose network of Facebook groups that took root across the country in April to organize protests over coronavirus stay-at-home orders has become a hub of misinformation and conspiracy theories that have pivoted to a variety of new targets. Their latest: Black Lives Matter and the nationwide protests of racial injustice.

These groups, which now boast a collective audience of more than 1 million members, are still thriving after most states started lifting virus restrictions.

And many have expanded their focus.

One group transformed itself last month from "Reopen California" to "California Patriots Pro Law & Order," with recent posts mocking Black Lives Matter or changing the slogan to "White Lives Matter." Members have used profane slurs to refer to Black people and protesters, calling them "animals," "racist" and "thugs" a direct violation of Facebook's hate speech standards.

Others have become gathering grounds for promoting conspiracy theories about the protests, suggesting protesters were paid to go to demonstrations and that even the death of George Floyd, an unarmed Black man who died in the custody of Minneapolis police, was staged.

An Associated Press review of the most recent posts in 40 of these Facebook groups most of which were launched by conservative groups or pro-gun activists found the conversations largely shifted last month to attacking the nationwide protests over the killing of Black men and women after Floyd's death.

Facebook users in some of these groups post hundreds of times a day in threads often seen by members only and shielded from public view.

"Unless Facebook is actively looking for disinformation in those spaces, they will go unnoticed for a long time and they will grow," said Joan Donovan, the research director at the Harvard Kennedy School's Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics, and Public Policy. "Over time, people will drag other people into them and they will continue to organize."

Facebook said it is aware of the collection of reopen groups, and is using technology as well as relying on users to identify problematic posts. The company has vowed in the past to look for material that violates its rules in private groups as well as in public places on its site. But the platform has not always been able to deliver on that promise.

Shortly after the groups were formed, they were rife with coronavirus misinformation and conspiracy theories, including assertions that masks are "useless," the U.S. government intends to forcibly vaccinate people and that COVID-19 is a hoax intended to hurt President Donald Trump's re-election chances this fall.

Posts in these private groups are less likely to be scrutinized by Facebook or its independent fact-checkers, said Donovan. Facebook enlists media outlets around the world, including The Associated Press, to fact check claims on its site. Members in these private groups have created an echo chamber and tend to agree with the posts, so are therefore less likely to flag them for Facebook or fact-checkers to review, Donovan added.

At least one Facebook group, ReOpen PA, asked its 105,000 members to keep the conversation focused on reopening businesses and schools in Pennsylvania, and implemented rules to forbid posts about the racial justice protests as well as conspiracy theories about the efficacy of masks.

But most others have not moderated their pages as closely.

For example, some groups in New Jersey, Texas and Ohio have labeled systemic racism a hoax. A member of the California Facebook group posted a widely debunked flyer that says "White men, women and children, you are the enemy," which was falsely attributed to Black Lives Matter. Another falsely claimed that a Black man was brandishing a gun outside the St. Louis mansion where a white couple confronted protesters with firearms. Dozens of users in several of the groups have pushed an unsubstantiated theory that liberal billionaire George Soros is paying crowds to attend racial justice protests.

Facebook members in two groups Wisconsinites Against Excessive Quarantine and Ohioans Against Excessive Quarantine also regularly refer to protesters as "animals," "thugs," or "paid" looters.

In the Ohio group, one user wrote on May 31: "The focus is shifted from the voice of free people rising up against tyranny ... to lawless thugs from a well known racist group causing violence and upheaval of lives."

Those two pages are part of a network of groups in Ohio, Wisconsin, Minnesota, New York and Pennsylvania created by conservative activist Ben Dorr, who has for years raised money to lobby on hot-button conservative issues like abortion or gun rights. Their latest cause pushing for governors to reopen their states has attracted hundreds of thousands of followers in the private Facebook groups they launched.

Private groups that balloon to that size, with little oversight, are like "creepy basements" where extremist views and misinformation can lurk, said disinformation researcher Nina Jankowicz, a fellow at the nonpartisan Wilson Center, a Washington, D.C., think tank.

"It's sort of a way that the platforms are enabling some of the worst actors to stay on it," said Jankowicz. "Rather than being de-platformed they can organize."

Pence and Biden focus on police, economy in Pa. events – WHYY

He also pushed for strong crackdowns on drug-related crimes repudiating a growing coalition of progressive prosecutors like Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner, who are pushing for decarceration and decriminalization for nonviolent offenses.

Pences remarks were in the same vein. He promised the crowd that the Trump administration would never defund police not now, not ever.

We live in a time when the radical left is presenting the American people with one false choice after another, Pence said. Like lately weve been hearing people say weve got to choose between funding our police and funding our communities.

Philadelphia and many other cities have, indeed, been negotiating rerouting funding for police to other community programs that are also intended to reduce crimes though support for those changes have come in large part from mainstream politicians.

Phillys recent budget, for instance, restored some proposed cuts to arts and affordable housing while axing a proposed boost to police funding.

City resident Jackie Kradzinski, who watched Pences speech with her family, said in her mind, Trump is the only candidate for a police-supporting voter.

This government supports our police, said Kradzinski, whose son and daughter both work in law enforcement in Philadelphia. Thats what we need. We need that backing for our cops.

As the vice president spoke, a crowd of FOP supporters outside the lodge grew unruly as a small group of Black Lives Matter protesters approached them. The crowd included groups of bikers and men representing the group the Proud Boys, which the Southern Poverty Law Center describes as a hate group and FBI documents labeled as extremist (though FBI officials later walked that back). They were heard hurling insults at protesters by a WHYY photographer on the scene.

Meanwhile, up near Scranton, Biden was keeping his focus firmly on the economy. At his Dunmore stop, the former vice president took a tour of McGregor Industries, a specialty metal fabricator headquartered there.

In a speech afterward, he rolled out a $700 billion plan aimed at forcing more companies to stop outsourcing manufacturing jobs to other countries.

The proposal includes putting $400 billion into American concrete, steel and cement, and another $300 billion into the development of new technology, like electric cars and 5G internet.

Biden said he also wants to shift Trumps trade deals and stem dependence on China for goods.

[Trump] promised to bring back jobs, but manufacturing was in a recession even before COVID-19. He promised to buy American, but then he let federal contractors double the rate of offshoring jobs in his first eighteen months, Biden said. Im going to change that. Were going to double to tax on foreign profits so we dont encourage people to leave and build abroad.

The spate of action on both sides of the aisle in Pennsylvania comes as Bidens campaign tries to capitalize on Trumps dipping poll numbers.

Biden leads Trump by 6.5 points in an average of recent polls of Pennsylvania voters. Its a strong position for the former vice president, according to Chris Borick, a pollster at Muhlenberg College.

The Democratic and Republican campaigns are competing for similar ground. Pence met with business leaders and Philadelphias police union, and Biden targeted some of the working-class voters Hillary Clinton lost to Trump in 2016.

Borick said all of this is calculated to shift the razor-thin margins by which Pennsylvania swung Republican in 2016. For instance, he said, the Trump campaigns decision to send Pence to Chester County which is trending left and to overwhelmingly blue Philadelphia speaks to a desire to chip away at the edges of the Democratic bloc.

If you can get even a sliver of votes from a place like Philadelphia in a way greater than you did in 2016, its valuable, he added. All votes count the same.

Based on its recent messaging, the Trump campaign has identified two policy areas as winning issues among blue-leaning voters: economics and law and order. And Borick said thats why Biden has to take on the president on those same exact issues.

I think when you look at the presidents standing, economic issues, despite the downturn, remain one of the more positive sides, so that could be a potential weakness for Vice President Biden, Borick said. Speaking on economic issues in key areas of a swing state makes sense.

He added that on at least one issue, Trump seems to be going firmly against the preferences of most Americans: coronavirus safety.

Even though Republicans and Democrats have starkly different views on mask-wearing, he said, polling shows that public opinion tends to align more with Bidens public health-informed approach.

Those partisan differences were clear at Pences FOP rally. Of the roughly 100 people who filled the small, enclosed auditorium at FOP headquarters, only a handful wore masks.

It was enough to draw the attention of Mayor Jim Kenney, who said the Trump campaigns predilection for indoor events during a pandemic doesnt make any sense to anyone though he noted, the FOP lodge is private property.

The entire state of Pennsylvania is still under a mask-wearing order from Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf, and Philadelphia never reopened fully as case numbers rose again after a period of decline. City Health Commissioner Thomas Farley recently said that since Philadelphia is averaging more than 100 new cases per day, he considers it to be in the throes of a second COVID-19 wave.

A spokesperson for Pence said officially, the vice president has encouraged all Americans to follow state and local guidance. His office said he wore a mask when he wasnt speaking.

That guidance wasnt enforced or posted anywhere at the event.
