Azerbaijan: How one Ministry found the right strategy, resources, and technology to quickly create online classrooms – Microsoft

As schools around the world respond to healthcare challenges, the need for remote learning tools has never been more urgent. To make the transition to distance learning more straightforward, the Government of Azerbaijan decided to close all educational institutions on March 3rd.

They evaluated several different solutions for remote learning to keep education ongoing.

As the best solution available, the Ministry of Education advised all higher education institutions to use Teams for remote learning and provided additional support. To make the transition to distance learning more accessible, Microsoft team in Azerbaijan, together with Bestcomp Group, Edumedia, and Innovative Technologies in Education, helped schools, educators, students, and their families as they navigate this new way of learning.

According to the Ministry, Microsoft Teams for Education, in comparison with competitive solutions, provides a holistic environment that allows content distribution, collaboration, live meetings, and assessments.

Microsoft Teams is scalable to the needs of the educational system, and Microsofts local office and partner network support were available immediately, said Vusal Khanlarov, Head of ICT Bureau in the Ministry of Education.

Continuing to drive student engagement and focused learning can be a challenge, especially for those moving to remote learning for the first time. Educators need support to help make this work.

For K12 schools, Ministry in Azerbaijan launched Virtual School based on Teams, where students and educators can register and access educational content, assessments, and online classes immediately. They can find all e-books, video-lessons, additional education applications, and centralized testing. All such resources were integrated to bring together face-to-face connections, assignments, and conversations in a single hub.

Today, more than a million K12 students and 100.000 teachers have already been registered and actively using the platform. This project has been widely covered by local online and TV media to support educators who have created thousands of videos with the help of Teams for Education. Now, it is possible to evaluate the level of knowledge by using PowerBI tracking activities by each region and every school in Azerbaijan. At the same time, Virtual School became the largest online platform for cooperation and collaboration countrywide.

It is an excellent example of how one Ministry found the right strategy, resources, and technology to quickly create online classrooms that help students, teachers, and faculty find new ways to connect and learn.

Even more, 100.000+ users from 30 out of 50 universities and all vocational education institutions use Teams and decided to continue with Microsoft Teams as a learning platform.

Ministry of Education continues running the Virtual School project as an always-on platform, helping students stay engaged, and learning stays on track. At the same time, the Ministry uses Microsoft Teams for internal daily meetings.

Capabilities of Microsoft Teams, Forms, Minecraft Education Edition, and Stream will be used for centralized monitoring, content distribution, and flexible content amendments according to learning results

Technology security to be major theme in Taiwan-US relations: New envoy – Taiwan News

Next Taiwanese envoy to U.S.Hsiao Bi-khim Next Taiwanese envoy to U.S.Hsiao Bi-khim (CNA photo)

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) Taiwan should play a crucial part as technology security moves to the forefront of the strategic competition between the United States and China, the islands new envoy in Washington, D.C., told CNA in an interview published Saturday (July 11).

The Columbia University-educated Hsiao Bi-khim (), 48, will become Taiwans first female representative to its major ally later this month after a long career as a Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) legislator.

Ahead of her departure for the U.S., Hsiao said Taiwan should emphasize its role as a trusted partner of countries with similar ideals. One area where the island could play a major part is the rearranging of international supply chains amid the fallout from the U.S.-China trade war and Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, she said.

As China has built its progress in fields such as 5G on the theft of technology, U.S. authorities are trying to reduce the country's dependence on the East Asian giant, according to Hsiao. The new envoy said that even though Taiwan cannot be expected to completely end its business ties with China, as a key player in hardware manufacturing, it can nevertheless offer cooperation and supply solutions to friendly countries.

The coronavirus pandemic has also raised other countries' interest in cooperating with Taiwan to an unprecedented level, Hsiao told CNA, emphasizing the importance of sectors such as technology and healthcare as opportunities.

Saying she looks forward to her tasks, Hsiao predicted China would do its utmost to disrupt ties between Taiwan and the U.S. but said the island will develop relationships in Washington regardless of political party.

Baze Unveils New Strategic Phase in Personalized Nutrition, Partnering with Performance Kitchen to Bring Nutrient-Dense Meal Options to Its Users -…

BOSTON, July 9, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- Baze, a pioneer in personalized dietary supplements, today announced an expansion of its services to include food and meal recommendations from Performance Kitchen, a healthy and convenient frozen meal brand with a wide variety available nationally. Best known for developing the personalized nutrition industry's first convenient, at-home, pain-free blood test for assessing micronutrient deficiencies, Baze is adding Performance Kitchen's food to their targeted supplement program in order to provide their customers with more holistic and dynamic ways of addressing their nutrient deficiencies.

Founded in 2014, Baze has discovered that 93 percent of the US population is at risk of two or more nutrient deficiencies, even when following healthy diet guidelines. The Company's evidence-based approach has already been proven to eliminate 73 percent of its customers' nutrient deficiencies in just three months. Baze's new move to include food recommendations will now address the root cause of the issue the need for more nutrient-dense diets.

The addition ofPerformance Kitchen meals to the Baze platform positions the Company as the first nutrition platform that connects users to both food and supplement recommendations, specifically targeting nutrient deficiencies and creating convenient and impactful personalized nutrition experiences.

"Our objective has been to bring together the worlds of personalized dietary supplements and actionable food solutions. One thing that we are very aware of is that the current state of nutrition solutions is very fragmented, resulting in a lot of complexity which makes it difficult for people to adopt and adhere to new diet habits. Our position at Baze is that while there will always be an important role for targeted supplementation, the issue starts with diet and our solution can help our customers be smarter about what they eat. We believe this holistic approach in partnership with Performance Kitchen will result in even better results in achieving optimum nutrition, and will also reshape how our customers think about food as tools for addressing their micronutrition needs," said Philipp Schulte, CEO of Baze.

From the beginning, Baze has understood that for the program to drive meaningful health impact through nutrition, it has to start with the right approach and with the most actionable data. Rather than relying on a "one size fits all" method to supplementation, nutrition scientists and Registered Dietitians at Baze have developed a personal supplement system based on an individual's nutritional deficiencies.

In the market now for two years, Baze customers are recommended a unique supplement regimen that is tailored to correct their identified deficiencies, after submitting blood samples that measures micronutrient levels along with a questionnaire and digital biomarkers.

Now working with leaders in the food industry like Performance Kitchen who are creating nutrient-dense food options, Baze can have a greater measurable impact on improving customer's blood nutrient status.

"A balanced nutrition plan that blends healthy nutrient-dense foods with tailored supplements will allow for a more holistic solution," said Schulte. "We're excited to ultimately provide our customers with more flexibility in how they address their nutrient needs," he added.

About Baze

Founded by Philipp Schulte and Dr. Isam Haddad in 2014, Baze is the first blood-based, at-home nutritional testing kit offering high-quality subscription supplements and personalized food recommendations. Baze measures micronutrient levels regularly to ensure sustainable improvement in nutritional imbalances and overall health. Once Baze analyzes users' samples, the company delivers personalized, smart vitamin supplements and healthy, nutrient-dense food recommendations to customers based on their results.

About Performance Kitchen

I Took Sakara’s New Supplements Pack and Here’s What Happened – The Beet

Ive long been a fan of plant-based meal delivery service, Sakara. In fact, they had me at dark chocolate granola with vanilla almond milk. (And then they had me again for lunch with Prosperity Pad Thai, made with kelp noodles hydrating veggies and an indulgent sesame dressing. Oh, and kimchi banh mi dumplings for dinner? Sign me up.)

But when they launched Sakara RX: The Foundationthis spring, Ill be the first to admit I was skeptical. Could a pack of daily supplementsthe Superfood Multi, Algae Omega, Macro Minerals, the Complete Probiotic Formula, and the Adaptogenic B Complexreally leave me feeling amazing?

30 days later on my Sakara RX: The Foundation, Im here to tell you that yes, yes it can. Made with plant-based ingredients and no fillers or additives, as well as whole-food ingredients, all the supplements are medical-grade, doctor-formulated and produced with active ingredients that science supports as being beneficial for health. My roller-coaster emotions and energy levels amid the coronavirus crisis, however, are no match for all this science and goodness, I assumed. Boy, was I wrong.

Though I didnt notice much of a difference within the first week or so of taking the supplements (stick with it friends!), shortly thereafter my energy skyrocketed. While I usually leave my work desk around 6 p.m. each night, I found myself regularly having enough energy to power through until 7 p.m. or even 8:30 p.m. Doing daily weight-lifting videos on YouTube became less arduous and my nightly power walks logged some 3,500 steps compared to my usual 2,000 or so around my hood.

Admittedly, Im wearing mostly elastic waistband shorts and tee shirts these days (and pajamas, oh are these? pajamas), but were I to put on a dress or slip into some skinny jeans, theyd be looser. Im not saying the supplements pack caused the new lines of definition that have appeared on my abs in the past month, but they definitely couldnt have hurt.

In a recent catchup, The Beet had with Sakara founders and girl boss extraordinaire, Danielle DuBoise and Whitney Tingle, they both also expressed their similar obsession with the new supplements line.

I also take The Foundation every single day. Its Sakaras new supplement line and theyre the cleanest, most nourishing supplements on the market. I feel such a difference taking them and am so proud of this product! said DuBoise. We need nutritional insurance. Sadly, eating well isn't enough anymoredue to nutrient depletion from stress, less sleep, anxiety, and poor soil health. These supplements help to replenish nutrients to help your body work optimally.

Later, DuBoise further explained why this product is her nutrition MVP. The Foundation is one of my absolute favorite products. Its our newest launch and is doctor-formulated advanced nutritional support in convenient doses (30-day supply; single-use packs), designed to provide you with a foundation of the essential nutrients you need every single day to look and feel your best. They provide the advanced nutritional support you need every day for gut health, immunity, energy, beautiful skin, and system-wide vitality.

After 30 days of popping these pills (note to customers: plug your nose when you take them to make going down easier lest you want that dreaded fishy aftertaste), I can also attest to the beautiful skin tout, as I barely broke out while taking the supplements andgasphave pretty much stopped washing my face with anything but water.

So were there any downsides to my experience? I will say that some nights in the past month I felt totally wired way past my bedtime and had a tougher time than usual falling asleep. Was it a sneaky side effect of my newfound boundless energy or was something else at play, Im not sure. Either way, Ive tried to counteract that by taking more evening baths to wind down and keeping my apartment extra cool at night because sleeping hot in summers swelter is no match for even the finest of vitamin and mineral balance.

Overall, while the supplements are on the pricier side, if youre looking to jumpstart your wellness routine and say goodbye to fumbling around with what feels like a billion different jars of supplements in favor of a one-stop pouch, you cant do better than The Foundation. As the French and my Dad say, votre sant! To your health, people.Sakara RX: The Foundation costs $120 for a 30-day supply or $105 per month with a monthly subscription. Learn more or buy it here.

Moon Mining Could Begin As Early As 2025 – OilPrice.com

Plans to start mining the Moon as early as 2025 became more attractive this week after a US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) team found evidence that the Earths natural satellite may, underneath its surface, be richer in metals than previously thought. Using data from the Miniature Radio Frequency (Mini-RF) instrument onboard NASAs Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO), a team of researchers came to the conclusion that the lunar subsurface contains a higher concentration of certain metals, such as iron and titanium, than estimated.

The study, published in the journal Earth and Planetary Science Letters, contends the most popular theory surrounding the Moons origins. The hypothesis contends the satellite was formed when a Mars-sized object collided with Earth, vaporizing large portions of the Earths upper crust.

By improving our understanding of how much metal the moons subsurface actually has, scientists can constrain the ambiguities about how it has formed, how it is evolving and how it is contributing to maintaining habitability on Earth, lead study author Essam Heggy said in a statement.

The evidence was discovered while the scientists were looking for ice at the bottom of craters in the lunar north pole region, NASA said. It means that fine dust found at the base of those holes are parts of the deeper layers of the Moon, ejected during meteor impacts. As such, this dust represents the composition in deeper Moon layers.

Related: Exxon Is Big Oils Outlier In The Post-Pandemic World The researchers found a pattern in which larger and deeper craters have higher metal concentrations than smaller and shallower ones. Specifically, in craters approximately 1 to 3 miles wide, the dielectric constant or electrical property increased along with crater size. However, the electrical property remained constant for craters between three to 12 miles wide.

US President Donald Trump signed an order in April encouraging citizens to mine the Moon and other celestial bodies with commercial purposes.

The directive classifies outer space as a legally and physically unique domain of human activity instead of a global commons, paving the way for mining the moon without any sort of international treaty.

Americans should have the right to engage in commercial exploration, recovery, and use of resources in outer space, the document states, noting that the US had never signed a 1979 accord known as the Moon Treaty. This agreement stipulates that any activities in space should conform to international law.

Russias space agency Roscosmos quickly condemned Trumps move, likening it to colonialism.

There have already been examples in history when one country decided to start seizing territories in its interest everyone remembers what came of it, Roscosmos deputy general director for international cooperation, Sergey Saveliev, said.

The proposed global legal framework for mining on the moon, called the Artemis Accords, would be the latest effort to attract allies to the National Space Agencys (NASA) plan to place humans and space stations on the celestial body within the next decade.

It also lines-up with several public and private initiatives to fulfill the goal of extracting resources from asteroids, the moon and even other planets.

In 2015, the US Congress passed a bill explicitly allowing companies and citizens to mine, sell and own any space material.

That piece of legislation included a very important clause, stating that it did not grant sovereignty or sovereign or exclusive rights or jurisdiction over, or the ownership of, any celestial body.

Related: Saudi Arabia And Kuwait Restart Production At Huge Shared Oil Field

The section ratified the Outer Space Treaty, signed in 1966 by the US, Russia, and a number of other countries, which states that nations cant own territory in space.

Trump has taken a consistent interest in asserting American power beyond Earth, forming the Space Force within the US military last year to conduct space warfare.

The countrys space agency NASA had previously outlined its long-term approach to lunar exploration, which includes setting up a base camp on the moons south pole.

The US isnt the first nor the only nation to jump on board the lunar mining train.

Russia has been pursuing plans in recent years to return to the moon, potentially travelling further into outer space.

Roscosmos revealed in 2018 plans to establish a long-term base on the moon over the next two decades, while President Vladimir Putin has vowed to launch a mission to Mars very soon.

Luxembourg, one of the first countries to set its eyes on the possibility of mining celestial bodies, created in 2018 a Space Agency (LSA) to boost exploration and commercial utilization of resources from Near Earth Objects.

Unlike NASA, LSA does not carry out research or launches. Its purpose is to accelerate collaborations between economic project leaders of the space sector, investors and other partners.

Thanks to the emerging European network, scientists announced last year plans to begin extracting resources from the moon in five years.

NASA is working on lunar bases that can travel on wheels, or even legs, increasing landing zone safety, provide equipment redundancy and improve the odds of making key discoveries. (Image courtesy of NASA.)

The mission, in charge of the European Space Agency in partnership with ArianeGroup, plans to extract waste-free nuclear energy thought to be worth trillions of dollars.

Both China and India have also floated ideas about extracting Helium-3 from the Earths natural satellite. Beijing has already landed on the moon twice in the 21st century, with more missions to follow.

In Canada, most initiatives have come from the private sector. One of the most touted was Northern Ontario-based Deltion Innovations partnership with Moon Express, the first American private space exploration firm to have been granted government permission to travel beyond Earths orbit.

Space ventures in the works include plans to mine asteroids, track space debris, build the first human settlement in Mars, and billionaire Elon Musks own plan for an unmanned mission to the red planet.

Geologists, as well as emerging companies, such as US-based Planetary Resources, a firm pioneering the space mining industry, believe asteroids are packed with iron ore, nickel and precious metals at much higher concentrations than those found on Earth, making up a market valued in the trillions.

Bats may have started the coronavirus pandemic. Could they be the key to ending it? – Study Finds

ROCHESTER, N.Y. Bats are thought to be hosts for a number of deadly human viruses, including Ebola, rabies, and SARS-CoV-2 (the virus responsible for COVID-19). Despite carrying these viruses, however, bats themselves are relatively immune to the ill effects of viruses. In a new review paper published in the journal Cell Metabolism, University of Rochester scientists explain the mechanisms underlying bat virus tolerance and how bat immune systems may provide clues to treating viruses like SARS-CoV-2.

Although the origins of SARS-CoV-2 are not known for certain, the authors of the paper believe that the virus originated in bats and was subsequently transmitted to humans. Interestingly, although bats carry SARS-CoV-2, they seem to suffer no ill effects from it.

In addition to their virus tolerance, bats are remarkable for another reason: they live much longer than other animals of similar size. In general, body size tends to be closely related to lifespan. Smaller animals have shorter lives, while large ones live longer. Not so for bats. Many bat species can live for 30 to 40 years, which is unusual for their body size.

Weve been interested in longevity and disease resistance in bats for a while, but we didnt have the time to sit and think about it, says lead author Vera Gorbunova in a statement. Gorbunova is the Doris Johns Cherry Professor of Biology at Rochester. Being in quarantine gave us time to discuss this, and we realized there may be a very strong connection between bats resistance to infectious diseases and their longevity. We also realized that bats can provide clues to human therapies used to fight diseases.

Gorbunova and fellow scientist Andrei Seluanov have studied disease resistance and longevity in other animals, including naked mole rats, which have exceptionally long lifespans. A common factor across long-living species is inflammation, or rather, a lack thereof. These species tend to have dampened inflammatory responses, particularly when infected with viruses.

Inflammation is a key characteristic of aging and age-related diseases such as cancer, Alzheimers disease, and cardiovascular disease. One inflammation trigger is viruses, including SARS-CoV-2.

With COVID-19, the inflammation goes haywire, and it may be the inflammatory response that is killing the patient, more so than the virus itself, says Gorbunova. The human immune system works like that: once we get infected, our body sounds an alarm and we develop a fever and inflammation. The goal is to kill the virus and fight infection, but it can also be a detrimental response as our bodies overreact to the threat.

Unlike humans, bats bodies are able to reduce viral replication without a strong immune response. This is beneficial because it controls the virus, but does not create a harmful inflammatory response. The researchers suggest that there may be several factors explaining how bats came to develop such unique immune systems throughout evolution.

First, bats are the only mammals with the ability to fly. This ability may have required them to develop tolerance to a variety of factors. They include temperature changes, metabolic changes, and molecular damage. In turn, these adaptations may help them to fight off diseases.

Bats also live in very crowded spaces. They often hang close to one another in caves or trees. This cozy style of living means that viruses and other diseases spread easily in bat colonies.

Bats are constantly exposed to viruses, Seluanov says. They are always flying out and bringing back something new to the cave or nest, and they transfer the virus because they live in such close proximity to each other.

The researchers explain that bats and viruses are in an evolutionary arms race. As bats immune systems evolve to fight a virus, the virus evolves to beat the bats immune systems. This cycle continues on and on.

Usually the strongest driver of new traits in evolution is an arms race with pathogens, Gorbunova says. Dealing with all of these viruses may be shaping bats immunity and longevity.

So, why dont humans just gather together in crowded spaces to give our immune systems a chance to develop tolerance to viruses?

As the researchers explain, bat immune systems have evolved over thousands of years, not a few months. While our social gathering traits are similar to bats, our immune systems have not yet evolved to fight off viruses in the same way bats can.

The consequences may be that our bodies experience more inflammation, Gorbunova says.

Humans have two possible strategies if we want to prevent inflammation, live longer, and avoid the deadly effects of diseases like COVID-19, Gorbunova says. One would be to not be exposed to any viruses, but thats not practical. The second would be to regulate our immune system more like a bat.

Nope, every dog year isn’t equal to 7 human years, researchers now say – WXII The Triad

How do you compare a dog's age to that of a person? A popular method says you should multiply the dog's age by 7 to compute how old Fido is in "human years."But new research published Thursday in the Cell Systems journal debunks that method. And that's because the scientists behind a new study say dogs and humans don't age at the same rate.Researchers at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine have developed a new formula that takes into account that variance. Tracking molecular changes in the DNA of Labrador retrievers, and in particular "the changing patterns of methyl groups" in their genome, according to a release, the study shows how dogs age at a much faster rate than humans early in their lives, then slow down after reaching maturity."This makes sense when you think about it after all, a nine-month-old dog can have puppies, so we already knew that the 1:7 ratio wasn't an accurate measure of age," lead author Trey Ideker is quoted as saying.Based on the study, a one-year-old dog compares to a 30-year-old human, a four-year-old dog to a 52-year-old human. The rate of aging decreases after dogs turn 7.The new formula "is the first that is transferable across species," and scientists plan to test their findings on other dog breeds to study the impact of longevity on their findings, according to a release.Researchers also believe that observing changes in the methylation patterns before and after the use of anti-aging products could help veterinarians make more informed decisions in terms of diagnostics and treatment.A graphic in the study makes the age comparisons intuitive and provides some helpful context for dog owners, including the scientists themselves."I have a six-year-old dog she still runs with me, but I'm now realizing that she's not as 'young' as I thought she was," Ideker is quoted as saying.

Mifepristone Increases Lifespan in Flies and Worms…Can It Improve Longevity in Humans? – MedicalResearch.com

MedicalResearch.com Interview with:

John Gerard TowerProfessor of biological sciencesUniversity of Southern California

MedicalResearch.com: What is the background for this study?

Response: Mifepristone is a synthetic steroid drug that is used in humans for birth control and as a treatment for Cushings disease, and is currently in clinical trials as an anti-cancer treatment.

We have previously shown that mifepristone dramatically increases the life span of mated female Drosophila flies.

MedicalResearch.com: What are the main findings?

Response: In the present study, we find that mifepristone increases fly life span by altering genes and metabolic pathways that are shared with humans, including interactions with the microbiome.

In addition, we find that mifepristone increases the life span of mated C. elegans worms.

MedicalResearch.com: What should readers take away from your report?

Response: It is striking how conserved the regulation of life span appears to be across species. The metabolism associated with a long, healthy life in humans is similar to the metabolism associated with a long, healthy life in flies, and this is promoted by mifepristone. The finding that mifepristone can increase life span in species as different as fly and worm suggests the possibility that mifepristone might also be able to increase life span in humans.

MedicalResearch.com: What recommendations do you have for future research as a result of this work?

Response: It will be important to identify the exact molecular target of mifepristone in the fly, as this remains unknown, and identifying this target may be useful for designing further anti-aging interventions. It may also be of interest to design human clinical trials to test for possible life span effects of mifepristone.

Nothing to disclose.

WW3 fears: Kim Jong-Un rejects talks with Trump over North Koreas nuclear programme – Express.co.uk

North Korean vice foreign minister Choe Son Hui has warned the US Kim Jong-Un has no intention of changing policy and surrendering its nuclear weapons.Kim Jong-Un and Donald Trump have met three times during the US Presidents first term.

In their second meeting in 2019, talks broke down after chairman Kim failed to offer enough nuclear weapons or ballistic missiles in exchange for lifting international sanctions.

In a statement carried by the state-run KCNA news agency, Mr Hui questioned the motive of the US and accused Washington of using the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea (DRPK) for political reasons.

Mr Hui said: We do not feel any need to sit face to face with the US as it does not consider the DPRK-US dialogue as nothing more than a tool for grappling its political crisis.

He added: There will never be any adjustment and change in our policy, conditional on external parameters like internal political schedule of someone.

The refusal to engage with Washington comes as US Deputy Secretary of State Stephen Biegun, who led previous working-level negotiations with North Korea, is due to visit neighbouring South Korea to discuss relations.

The North Korean vice foreign minister also accused Washington of having a hostile policy towards Pyongyang and going back on previous agreements.

Mr Hui added any potential negotiations would be a waste of time and insisted the US is mistaken for thinking talks could achieve anything.

He said: "Is it possible to hold dialogue or have any dealings with the US which persists in the hostile policy toward the DPRK in disregard of the agreements already made at the past summit.

It is clear to us, even without meeting, as to what shallow trick the US will approach us with, as it has neither intention nor will to go back to the drawing board.

"The US is mistaken if it thinks things like negotiations would still work on us."

Donald Trump and Kim Jong-Un met for the first time in 2018 in Singapore, they met again in Vietnam in 2019 before nuclear talks broke down.

A third surprise meeting took place on in June 2019 at the demilitarised zone separating the North and South Korea Mr Trump made history by becoming the first US president to set foot in North Korea.

Ahead of his visit to South Korea next week, US Deputy Secretary of State Stephen Biegun said there is time for both sides to re-engage and "make substantial progress".

South Korean President Moon Jae-in has said Mr Trump and Kim Jong Un should meet again before the crucial US election in November.

President Moon Jae-in said: "I believe there's a need for North Korea and the US to try dialogue one more time before the US presidential election.

"The issues of nuclear programs and sanctions will ultimately have to be resolved through North Korea-US talks.

The Accident, Psychedelics and Tattooing – INKED

By Adriana de Barros

Starting his tattoo career in 1993, Mike Cole was surprisingly using only black-and-gray inks and not the bright colors that we have become accustomed to seeing in his current work. From tattooing to painting to 3D printed furniture, Cole is producing mind-blowing alternate-reality (computerized, maze-looking) compositions. Perhaps he is connecting to the isometric universes of aliens. Or possibly looking back to Leonardo da Vincis advanced studies or even further back to the mysterious pyramids of Egypt. If Cole was gifted with immorality there is so much he would explore beyond tattooingmechanical engineering, architecture and, of course, some research uncovering many of the worlds enigmas. Youve seen his tattoos plenty of times, but do you know much about the person behind the art? Probably not. There isnt a lot of information about Cole out in the world, so we tracked him down at the 2020 California Golden State Tattoo Expo to find out a little more.

Mike Cole: A day in the life of me, that can vary depending on what mood Im in. Sometimes, Ill paint non-stop for 18 hours a day until a painting is finished, or Ill be completely focused on my health, fasting and riding my bike. On average, Im an obsessive person with everything I do. So if I want to do something, Im very obsessive with it. I think it speaks in the work.

Yeah, Im an introvert. Mostly introverted, sometimes I can be social but its very draining. I like to be private, the worlds a scary place. People are a bit scary to me at times because everybodys trying to find their way and nobody has got it figured out, so it gets a little scary. I also like to stay focused with my work and my family, therefore I keep to myself.

Yeah, to focus my mind. Its hard in this kind of environment; everything is coming at you a million miles an hour. So when you quiet things down (and youre at home), its easier to focus.

Yeah, aptitude can be genetic. My father was an engineer. I think certain brains have an aptitude for mechanical things, and certain brains are poets, and others are this or that. But my art is definitely very engineered based, I think it has a lot to do with him. I would watch the way he built and designed thingsthe schematics and the tools that I was given when I was a little kidbecause he was often busy doing something in his little mad scientist lab. Hed be enthralled in his work and that action probably influenced me to be the same way. He would give me tools to play with as he was busy with his [own] stuff.

My mom was a numbers lady, she worked for a bank. She was a "her way or the highway type of woman. Disciplined and critical, she gave me my inner critic. I have got to give her credit for that! I have that harsh inner voice that is constantly criticizing myself: You can do it better, you can do it better, you can do it better, yeah. Its not always a good thing because then you can get a bit too obsessed that it affects you, requiring you to bring oneself back [to the realization] that this is good enough. Give yourself a pat on the back. Youve got to give yourself... whats the word?

Yes, a little positive reinforcement. Or else that stuff can drive you crazy. One has to learn how to relax and shut off the mind. Thats my biggest struggle. Shutting my mind down has been one of my life-long struggles, especially after a car accident.

Yeah. I had actual visuals and hallucinations after that [accident], it took a long time to come back down to earth.

I began using Psychedelics about 10 years after the accident, and that was what helped me see that I am not my mind. That is the thing that really cracked the egg and showed me that Im not the chatter-in-the-thoughts, Im the watcher. Thats what psychedelics helped me with.

Doctors were sticking me on Paxil when I had this injury, and my body was sick and I didnt know how to eat correctly. I was all over the place with Paxil. Psychedelics brought me back to the center. Like, Oh, its a completely true medicine. It really changed my life!

As fast as society is, youve got all these legal chemicals that are Starbucks, but all the legal addictive stimulants: salts, sugars... Theyre designed to keep your mind going. Food is drugs. The more pollutants you give it, the more ramped up it is, and the more chatter. Also, exercise has been a huge thing for me.

Lots of cardio, keeping the body moving, stretching, getting the heart rate uppeaceful stuff. You dont have to lift 600 pounds to be up [active].

Yes, I could show the pre-accident and pre-psychedelic period. I have three different distinguishing phases of my work [pre-accident, post-accident and psychedelics]. I analyze myself constantly. If I look back its like, Whoa, thats a big, big jump and I owe it to psychedelics and the accident. When you get slingshot out of your body like that, when you hit a windshield going 50-miles-an-hour and remember seeing your head poke through it and the glass cracking out of the corner of your eye and your shoulder coming out of the socket and hearing all the crunch and crash, and not losing consciousness and then going to sleep for 15 minutes with a major concussion (which seems like four hours). Youre waking up, youre tripping, youre tripping without drugs. Your brain is scrambled.

Yeah, its crazy! We went off the side of a mountain. I was looking up into the sky. My truck was sitting on a tree pointing straight up in the air. My kids screaming and crying because he was in the car with me. And then Im kicking doors open trying to get him out of there. Yelling at the guy, What the F are you doing man? Why are you driving so fast in the snow? And then somebody yelling that, Oh, settle down sir, it was just an accident. Im like, Well, you know this guy. It was his fault, he caused all that pain, which took me 10 years since that day to recover. I had an opioid addiction, most people that are close to me know and Im sure a lot of people in the industry know it, too. And the psychedelics squashed that, because youre trying to medicate, youre trying to... you dont how to function, relationships and things are crumbling around you, your brain is scrambled from this trauma and youre trying to find anything that will ease it: psychologists, psychotherapists and Paxil. I was getting anxiety attacks in public and throwing up. It was rough.

When I decided to try mushrooms, it was one of the most terrifying and freeing experiences I have ever had. It made me realize my ego and the control on my mind; the chaotic state from all that trauma (PTSD), the mind trying to hold on like its almost stuck in a survival phase. Like, Holy crap, we just got hit by a car! Its always in defense mode and it never lets go until you take one of those compounds and it goes, Oh, Im not my mind.

Youre constantly in that state.

Theyre connected to the Isometric stuff. Like I see that stuff in everything still. When I look at a surface, I see it. Its almost like I am in a computer-generated reality and I have to say, Well, okay, so if Ive taken these compounds and things look pixelated and Im seeing these graphs and grids and formulas written over top of everything, [i.e.] I am seeing the projection of things and other people see the same kind of stuff, but not all the time. Then, everything is based on Isometric graphs and Fibonacci sequences, and you can see it.

Leonardo da Vinci had it figured out. M.C. Escher had it figured out. The Egyptians had it figured out. Those pyramids are power stations, [Laughing] theyre not dunes. Those little channels running under the water like the Tesla tower. Teslas electricity is dependent on water veins in the ground to create that crazy generation of power, and the Egyptians were doing the same thing. The Nile used to run way closer and it wasIm probably quoting a documentary hereit makes engineering sense! It makes complete sense. We know how to do free power. We shouldnt be using nuclear stuff and ruining the ozone and creating a crazy climate. The Earth naturally swings, climate change is normal, but were making it worse. We would probably be able to handle that swing, but the way were burning things and wrecking shit, its going to be too hot.

Josh's bodysuit by Mike Cole.

Josh was coming to me for a few years, probably a good three to four years. I worked on him and all his stuff was drawn on, using some stencils that I would draw over the graph, but a lot of it was free-flowing, freehanded with a marker onto his muscles. Josh is into fitness and has distinct anatomy with a defined stomach and nice serratus-lateral muscle, which I could use to just sculpt my separate to it. I love, love, love doing people that are carved up or whatever. If the human body is beautiful in general, like the anatomy is, thats what you want to construct a tattoo around. I think the human body is an amazing piece of work.

Ive heard the Iron Man thing.

Very robotic! Hes getting a suit, a superhuman, alien intelligence suit thats being mapped over his body. Im a nerd! I love all the Aliens movies, Avatar. I love all sci-fi stuff. So thats definitely influenced my work for sure.

Are These Penny Stocks Your Vice? ‘Sin Stocks’ To Watch In July – Penny Stocks

Theres More To Sin Penny Stocks Than Cigarettes & Beer

Ever hear of vice penny stocks or sin stocks? If you havent, thats ok because Im going to tell you the answer to the question, what are sin stocks? These are shares of companies that are in certain industries that deal with our daily vices. Consider things like alcohol, cannabis, gambling, tobacco, and now, magic mushrooms. As our vices evolve, so does the industry. In light of tech taking a big part of the stock markets recent turnaround, where do sin stocks stack up?

Lets look at one of the popular Sin ETFs, AdvisorShares Vice ETF (ACT Report). Since late-March, the ETF has bounced back from a low of $16.16 to current prices around $23. Not a bad move and one in line with the overall markets breakout move. However, for those less inclined to focus on a broad basket of companies, there are other ways to add a little Sin to your watch list.

[Read More] A Blooming Opportunity For Investors To Cash In On Mushroom Stocks

But how do you know which stocks to watch? Honestly, it starts with simple research. You should also have an understanding of certain industries that your watch list stocks are in. Things like alcohol and tobacco are much more established sectors than cannabis or psychedelics. In light of that, there could be more risk to take into consideration in certain circumstances. With this in mind, lets take a look at some sin penny stocks to watch this month.

New Wave Holdings Corp. (CSE: SPOR) is focused on the emerging psychedelics sector. Not only that, it has taken its understanding of what is known as mycologicals. Much like how the first movers of CBD and non-psychoactive cannabis products established market dominance early on, New Wave is taking up a similar approach. Its Key Business Units include:New Wave Recreational, New Wave Mental Health, and New Wave Natural.

Where early investors in cannabis represented something more closely to the customers buying it, mushroom stocks are seeing a surge of notable investors come in early. Shark Tank investor Mr. Wonderful Kevin OLeary and Canopy Growth Corp. CEO Bruce Linton were some of the early investors in the first mushroom stock IPO. Peter Thiel, the multi-billionaire investor, and Paypal co-founder, put big money bets into the industry. Billionaire investor Mike Novogratz has also been vocal about the psychedelic medicine space.

New Wave is building a globally focused, diversified business to take first-mover status in the blooming psychedelics & mind medicine industry. The company has positioned itself to benefit from current legal psychedelics use as well as creating functional mushroom products for addressing the growing interest in nutritional supplements. Last month, the company announced that it will support the Delos Psyche Research Group.

The group is conducting a study designed to determine the impact of ingesting small amounts of hallucinogenic or psychedelic substances for medicinal or therapeutic purposes. These are things like lysergic acid diethylamide or LSD. Furthermore, the company also brought on Dr.Carolyn Myers, Ph.D as VP Of Commercial Development. She will further the R&D around psychedelic compounds, including psilocybin, MDMA, LSD, and ketamine.

What other vices can you think of? Leisure activities maybe? While these may not necessarily be a Sin, theres something to be said about indulging in leisure activities. Drive Shack Inc. (DS Stock Report)is an owner and operator of golf-related leisure and entertainment businesses. If youre familiar with Top Golf, the model appears similar.

The company has locations in Orlando, West Palm Beach, Raleigh, and Richmond and caters to the adult crowd. Beer specials, food specials, entertainment specials and the like are part of the companys business model. Shares of DS stock surged in May and continued to new June highs of $3.05.

There hasnt been much of any news to speak of. However, entertainment venues and COVID are pretty closely tied. What I mean by this is that news of the economy reopening could have acted as its own catalyst for companies like Drive Shack. But if you look at the companys Twitter feed, youll see it making updates.

Over the last month or so, Drive Shack tweeted that it reopened multiple locations. These included Raleigh as of 6/26 and new hours at West Palm. The company made another tweet on this location in particular as well: UPDATE: WEST PALM BEACH CURFEW HAS BEEN LIFTED AND OUR NORMAL OPERATING HOURS WILL RESUME.

With this weeks news of a promising vaccine candidate, this could be sentiment related to a broader economic reopening. In a recently filed 13G/A on July 10th, it shows BlackRock, Inc. holding 1,434,617 shares or about 2.1% of the share class.

Shares of Hexo Corp. (HEXO Stock Report) has been one of the slow and steady marijuana penny stocks to watch recently. While thereve been sporadic jumps in the stock, overall, the trend has followed along with HEXO stocks 50 Day Moving Average Line (yellow line on chart).

On Thursday, Hexo Corp was back in rally mode. This came flowing its latest news on the international stage. The company announced the launch of medical cannabis products in Israel. This is through a 24-month agreement with Israeli medical cannabis company, Breath of Life International Ltd. According to the company, HEXO completed the first shipment of 493 kilograms even amid coronavirus restrictions, internationally.

We are proud to introduce HEXOs premium indoor medical cannabis products into the Israeli market, said Hugo Goldman, BOLs CFO and interim CEO. The products are already receiving positive feedback from both patients and retailers, and we are looking forward to continuing to expand our strategic relationship with HEXO in Israel.

Despite a slow move, you cant disagree with the current trend in HEXO stock for right now. Since mid-May, shares have steadily climbed (with a few 1-day jumps) in line with that 50DMA line. Will this remain the case for July or could this latest update make for an interesting month? Drop a comment below and leave your thoughts on HEXO.

Acreage Holdings Inc. (ACRG Stock Report)(ACRGF) is another one of the pot penny stocks to watch right now. Despite lighter volume than we normally see in popular penny stocks, ACRG stock started climbing on Friday. The company is a multi-state operator cultivating, processing, distributing, and retailing cannabis. Its geographic segments include New England, Mid-Atlantic, Midwest, West, and South.

This week, Acreage stock gained attention after the companys late-breaking news on July 9th. Acreage announced that the Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission granted the company provisional licenses for the retail sale of adult-use cannabis in Worcester and Shrewsbury.

Acreage will add adult-use retail sales to its existing The Botanist dispensary in Worcester, MA. That opened as a medical marijuana treatment center in 2018. It will open a new The Botanist dispensary in Shrewsbury, MA.

[Read More] Esports Penny Stocks Show Immunity To Coronavirus

Similar to Hexo, Acreage has traded around its 50DMA while there hasnt been a clear support/resistance set, ACRG stock continues to gravitate back to that level. Will the news help shed a more positive light on the sin penny stock?
