In Market: Me and Elon Musk: Birds Tweeting of a feather – fortworthbusiness.com

There was a big worldwide computer hack on Wednesday, July 15. Im sure you heard about it.

A breach in Twitters security allowed hackers to break into the accounts of leaders and technology moguls in one of the worst attacks in recent years. The ruse discovered Wednesday included bogus tweets from former President Barack Obama, Democratic presidential front-runner Joe Biden, Mike Bloomberg and a number of tech billionaires including Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and Tesla CEO Elon Musk. Celebrities Kanye West and his wife, Kim Kardashian West, were also hacked.

Oh yeah, there was that one. Also, one of my social media platforms was hacked. Yep, me and Elon Musk, Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos were just four peas in a pod. Their pods just happen to be slightly more upscale than mine.

My hack was a pretty familiar one. A friend request went out to people that I was already friends with, including a photo from my page. A few connections, in a weak moment, clicked on the request and received a message from some fourth or fifth world country where life is cheap but they do have internet cafes.

My hackers were smart enough not to ask a journalists friends for loads of bitcoin, but it was some sort of scam where they could weasel their way into friends accounts and probably send out more fake friend requests and on and on and on. Makes you sort of long for the days of the honest bank robber who walks in and demands money from a teller.

After I learned of the hack, I immediately notified the social media company and they went into a flurry of action. Or maybe I should say they went into a flurry of inaction. Basically, they sent me to a web page that said I should change my password. Whoopee, what technical geniuses they are. No wonder we surrender all individual rights to them. As a social media company, they promise connections with people the world over, but if you want to connect with them, well thats a different story. They want their Wizard to stay cloaked in mystery. Or they just couldnt be bothered. Too busy tinkering with their algorithms to squeeze another dollar from their system. Meanwhile, they sell your personal stats to any gangster around the world sitting in an internet caf and eventually hack you.

So, I changed my password, which I wont remember until the next time I get hacked. It gave me little sense of satisfaction.

Yeah, this so-called modern world has some serious bs to deal with. I remember the early days of the personal computer industry when people thought this new technology was going to change the world all for the better. And then when the world was connected, it was going to be even better. We would have more understanding among people of different races, creeds and colors as the lines of communication would remain open. Promises, promises. The automobile was going to take us everywhere, too, except for the fact were all stuck in traffic.

Yeah, promises. I just posted a story about people who believe that high-end furniture seller Wayfair is some kind of front for child sex trafficking. Back when I was a kid, you heard that kind of stuff on off days on talk radio and it didnt get much further than that. Now? People treat that kind of information like it is some deep, dark secret that they tell everyone about. Particularly at Thanksgiving dinner. Weve gotten more paranoid, maybe because we know these companies know so much about us. Or that well say something that gets us canceled.

As to that other hack on Wednesday, the FBI said it is investigating and said the high-profile accounts appear to have been compromised in order to perpetuate cryptocurrency fraud.

Twitter said the hackers used social engineering to target some of the companys employees and then gained access to the accounts. The term refers to taking advantage of human nature via phishing attacks, tricking people into downloading malicious software or compromising them by offering something in return for information. Twitter did not say how its employees were compromised.

The attackers sent out tweets from the accounts of the public figures, offering to send $2,000 for every $1,000 sent to an anonymous bitcoin address.

Cybersecurity experts say such a breach could have dire consequences since the attackers were tweeting from verified, globally influential accounts with millions of followers.

If you receive a tweet from a verified account, belonging to a well-known and therefore trusted person, you can no longer assume its really from them, said Michael Gazeley, managing director of cybersecurity firm Network Box.

Reacting to the breach, Twitter swiftly deleted the tweets and locked down the accounts to investigate. In the process it prevented verified users from sending out tweets for several hours. Bob Sturm of KTCK The Ticket radio station in Dallas is a big verified user of Twitter. The lockdown kept us from getting the latest sports news from Bobs big sports brain.

Twitter said Thursday it has taken significant steps to limit access to internal systems and tools. User passwords did not appear to have been compromised, Twitter said, so its not necessary for users to reset them. Oh, and Twitters stock price fell 39 cents on Thursday because of the hack.

As for me, I posted a note on my site, telling my friends not to pay attention to the fake friend request. I also requested my friends to raise a glass of wine, whiskey or Dr Pepper and toast our friendship virtually with a salud!, which is Spanish for to your health.

As to the people who hacked me? Im comforted by the fact that I live in a place with great Mexican food and they dont. And Im toasting them, too, with words that are the complete and total opposite of salud.

Twitter accounts of Joe Biden, Elon Musk, Bill Gates, Apple, Uber, Kanye West and others hacked in cryptocurrency scam – 9News

Twitter accounts belonging to Joe Biden, Bill Gates, Elon Musk and Apple, among other prominent handles, were compromised and posted tweets that appeared to promote a cryptocurrency scam.

"Everyone is asking me to give back, and now is the time," Mr Gates' tweet said, promising to double all payments to a Bitcoin address for the next 30 minutes.

A spokesperson for Twitter said the company is looking into the issue.

The sheer number of prominent accounts impacted made it arguably the biggest security incident in Twitter's history.

A hack like this is particularly concerning not just because of any financial scam that can be run, but because so many world leaders use Twitter - and some, like US President Donald Trump, use it to announce major policy decisions.

A hack that took over an account belonging to one of those leaders could have devastating consequences.

Last year, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey's account was hacked, raising concerns about whether any account on the platform can truly avoid being compromised.

The mechanism by which that hack occurred was fixed by Twitter after Mr Dorsey's hack and there's no reason to believe it is to blame here.

"We can confirm that this tweet was not sent by Bill Gates," a spokesperson for Gates told CNN Business.

"This appears to be part of a larger issue that Twitter is facing. Twitter is aware and working to restore the account."

"Like many others, our @Uber account was hit by a scammer today," the company tweeted.

"The tweet has been deleted and we're working directly with @Twitter to figure out what happened."

Within minutes of the tweets being posted, a bitcoin account that appeared in some of them showed more than 320 transactions and received more than $113,000.

Comet NEOWISE and International Space Station over central Indiana – WTHR

This comet can be seen without a telescope or binoculars, but it's much easier to spot by magnifying with those tools.

INDIANAPOLIS Another clear evening and overnight in central Indiana will be the perfect backdrop for sky-viewing and there will be plenty to see.

Each passing night the Comet NEOWISE progressively gets higher in the northwest horizon.

This comet can be seen without a telescope or binoculars, but it's much easier to spot by magnifying with those tools.

If you're trying to watch the night pass you'll want to look northwest around an hour after sunset and the 90+ minutes following.

Tuesday morning provides another perfect opportunity for comet viewing in the northeastern horizon.

Eric Teske of Noblesville and Dean Hockney of Kokomo were both able to capture NEOWISE early Monday morning. The time to look is approximately between 4 - 5:30 a.m.

In addition to the comet, the International Space Station will make several flyovers in the coming days as central Indiana is firmly in its orbit.

A great opportunity to see a six-minute flyover tonight between 10:48 PM - 10:54 PM.

This will be followed by four six-minute flyovers Tuesday, most of which should be clear for viewing. Good luck!

International Space Station from Earth: Perfect sighting for Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Delhi tonight | What to know – India Today

Did you know the International Space Station is among the easiest-to-spot extraterrestrial objects? After the Sun and the Moon, the International Space Station is the third brightest object in the sky and so, quite easy to spot. All spotting the International Space Station requires is a cloudless sky and timing -- the space station should be flying over your city at a visible enough angle a few hours after sunset or before sunrise.

The latter of the two requirements -- timing -- will be fulfilled tonight for the cities of Rajkot and Ahmedabad in Gujarat, Jaipur in Rajasthan, and Delhi. In fact, it's going to be as perfect as it can be.

Tonight, the International Space Station will be flying over these cities at an angle of nearly 90 degrees, i.e. the ISS will pass right over your head, giving you the perfect opportunity to get a sighting of the International Space Station in the sky.

This, by the way, is not as rare as you'd think. And, if you live in cities other than the ones mentioned above, fret not. But before we talk about the whys and hows of these two points, let's go through a brief guide on spotting the International Space Station tomorrow.

When will International Space Station be visible?

In Rajkot and Ahmedabad, the International Space station will 'rise' at around 8:35 pm Tuesday. In the other cities -- Jaipur and Delhi -- this will take place closer to 8:37 pm.

Viewing International Space Station: Where can I see it?

The ISS will begin rising from the southwest horizon, i.e. if you're standing facing the South, the space station will appear somewhere to your 1-2 o'clock.

How much time will I have?

Six minutes. That's how long the International Space Station will be visible in the skies of Rajkot, Ahmedabad, Jaipur and Delhi.

How will the International Space Station look like?

The International Space Station is the third brightest object in the sky (Photo courtesy: Dave Walker)

Like we told you earlier, the ISS is the third-brightest object in the sky. It will appear like a star, but much brighter, and will be seen flying by like an aeroplane, but much faster.

If you're in the cities mentioned above, you will basically see a bright, star-like object rising from the horizon, darting across the night sky, passing right over your head, before dipping and 'setting' into the opposite side of the horizon.

WHY ONLY THESE CITIES?

Rajkot, Ahmedabad, Jaipur and Delhi are simply the cities that will have the best possible view of the ISS Tuesday night, with the space station passing above your heads. Towns and cities located within an 80-km radius of these places will also have a similar view.

Others located a little far off, such as Vadodara, Indore, Agra, Dehradun and Chandigarh will also be able to view the International Space Station; it's just that ISS won't pass directly overhead and will be seen at an angle.

Other cities will get their turn in the future, like we explain in the section below.

NOT A RARE EVENT

The International Space Station orbits around the Earth approximately 16 times a day. What this means is that there are plenty of opportunities to spot the ISS in the sky. All you require is cloudless skies and the space station passing over your city at a comfortable angle, sometime after or before sunset.

What does that mean? Think of the horizon being 0 degrees and a point in the sky right above your head being 90 degrees. The ISS can appear at any angle between these. Nasa says that the best possible angle to view the ISS is 40 degrees or more since that will ensure obstructions such as tall buildings don't get in the line of your sight.

The International Space Station seen flying in the night sky (Photo courtesy: Wayne Boyd)

It is also important that the ISS passes over your city a few hours after or before sunset. This ensures that enough sunlight bounces off the space station for it to be visible in the night sky.

Sounds extremely difficult to calculate, right? Which is why Nasa does it for the world. The space agency has a website -- Spot The Station -- dedicated to tracking the movements of the International Space Station and telling you the best suitable time to view the ISS in the coming week.

So, while Mumbai will be missing out on viewing the International Space Station Tuesday night, it will be able to see the spectacle -- at the same overhead angle -- early Thursday morning later in the week.

Of course, you won't be able to capture images like the ones we've shown you above with your smartphone, but it will be quite a sight to actually see.

This Record-Breaking Sprinter Was on Track to Go to the Olympics; He Went Vegan Instead – VegNews

Rising track star Elijah Hall recently went vegan as part of his training for the Tokyo Olympic Games. He was on track to participate in the 2020 Games, which were originally set to start next week but have been rescheduled for 2021 due to COVID-19 restrictions on mass gatherings. In the meantime, Hall decided to step up his nutrition game by going vegan. The young athlete is the 2018 NCAA National Champion with the Houston Cougars and is also the United States record holder for the Indoor 200 Meters.

Hall says his new dietwhich includes favorite dishes such as pollo salsa tacos and Beyond Burgershas provided him with more energy, better sleep, and an overall feeling of being lighter on his feet, both on and off the track. I wanted to approach my season differently than I ever have before, Hall told VegNews. I have read about great athletes who have turned plant-based and have longer careers.

A number of pro athletes in various sportsincluding tennis champ Venus Williams, NFL pro Colin Kaepernick, ultramarathon runner Scott Jurek, and boxer David Hayehave credited veganism for their optimal health and performance. Earlier this year, world race car champion Lewis Hamilton said: I think my health has just got better and better over the last couple of years as Ive gone to the plant-based diet. And tennis champion Novak Djokovic said: Its more than a performance reason for me, its a lifestyle, its something Im really proud of.

Why investors must take notice of the ‘silver economy’ – Investment Week

There are more than 100 'international days' recognised by the United Nations. Some of them you might have heard of (International Women's Day, for instance). Others you might not have heard of (International Mother Language Day).

Some of the days are light-hearted and fun (World Tuna Day), and other days less so (World Intellectual Property Day).

There is one international day, however, that is slightly more difficult to pin down. On the one hand, this day celebrates human flourishing and the collective potential of our species.

On the other hand, this day serves as a warning, alerting us to the dangers associated with humanity's rapid, unchecked expansion.

11 July was World Population Day.

It was established by the UN in 1989, following the wave of interest generated by the Day of Five Billion, which was observed on 11 July 1987.

Since then, the global population has swelled at an even faster rate, adding another 2.8 billion to its ranks.

Having to accommodate roughly 7.8 billion people is no easy feat: it puts immense strain on everything from agriculture and the environment to water and sanitation systems, the provision of public welfare, and access to living space.

Soy sauce, robot surgeons and pet care: Stock selection beyond Covid-19 crisis

As the result of population growth, people are not only more numerous, they are also older. Ageing has also taken on a new meaning, seen less as a public burden that needs to be managed and more as a new stage of one's life with fulfilling potential.

As such, ageing populations are proving to be one of most significant demographic transformations of this century.

Fortunately, both the public and private sector is responding to these demographic shifts. This is good, not only for the millions of elderly people that depend on supportive care, products and services, but for the sectors with revenue exposure to senior consumption.

We call this the 'silver economy', within which lies significant growth potential over the coming years.

The silver economy refers to economic activity generated by the spending linked to serving the needs of those over 50. And this is big business. The US silver economy is worth $7trn alone, making it more valuable than the economies of Britain, Japan, or India.

In the past 18 years, companies whose businesses relate to the ageing population have achieved average revenue and earnings growth that has outperformed the global market. This trend is expected to continue gathering momentum.

More and more sectors will be driven by the spending of seniors, as these high-net-worth consumers are those with the fastest growing expenditure rate among the overall population.

With more spare time and disposable income, industries such as health, social care, leisure, and travel are benefitting significantly from growth in this consumer segment.

Polar Capital's Rogoff: Covid-19 will alter people's behaviours forever

The silver economy is broader than you might think. Automobile companies, for example, stand to benefit, as former baby-boomers change cars more regularly than today's millennials. Beauty and personal care companies may also profit, as pensioners seek to look younger for longer.

And for those over 80, home security companies are particularly important, experiencing strong growth as a result.

The silver economy does not show up in the same way everywhere. Each geography has its own sector profile, diversifying the universe of investment opportunities.

Asia, for example, is focused primarily on leisure activities while Europe is focused more on financial savings and dependency.

While countries like Japan and those in Western Europe have been growing old for decades, investment opportunities are beginning to open up in emerging countries.

This applies particularly to public health, where economic development and cultural westernisation is causing an increase in lifestyle diseases traditionally experienced by wealthier countries, such as diabetes.

There is one public health factor, however, shaping trends in ageing more profoundly than anything else: Covid-19. It is. of course, impossible to broach the subject of ageing without exploring this; the single, biggest threat to elderly people in modern times.

To put this threat in perspective, the chance of dying from Covid-19 goes from less than 1% for the under 50s to as high as 20% for the over 80s.

Polar Capital's Rogoff: Covid-19 will alter people's behaviours forever

Naturally, over the past few months, the outbreak has pulled the silver economy in different directions, benefiting some players while disrupting others.

On one side, certain companies, from pharma to food delivery platforms, which have experienced heightened demand, particularly from older consumer segments, have benefited from the crisis.

On the other side, the challenges faced by sectors that have either lost business (such as travel and leisure) or experienced increased costs (health and life insurance) have been compounded by their especially high exposure to elderly consumers.

But while the short-term prospects for the silver economy are mixed, the outbreak is causing us to revaluate the strength of our health and social systems, and the resiliency of businesses associated with elderly consumption. Such a re-evaluation is necessary given the far-reaching economic and human implications of a future pandemic.

This - the long-term impact of coronavirus - coupled with ageing as an underlying megatrend, means the silver economy will continue to grow over the next 50 years. And for savvy investors that recognise and capitalise on this ongoing theme, lucrative opportunities await.

So, as we marked World Population Day, let us take it both as a celebration and a reminder. It is a celebration of human achievement, which has resulted in a higher quality and longevity of life for people globally.

But it must also remind us of the importance of responding to the challenges associated with ageing populations.

Only by investing in the people, companies and institutions designed to support the elderly, can we ensure a long, healthy and happy future for us all.

Will COVID-19 Change the Way Every Generation Lives? UK Expert Offers Insight – UKNow

LEXINGTON, Ky. (July 17, 2020) From the Great Depression to the Civil Rights Movement each generation has been shaped by the national and international events that take place during their formative years.

Will the same be said for the COVID-19 pandemic?

Anthony Bardo, an assistant professor with a dual appointment inHealthy Society and Populations and the Department of Sociologyin the UK College of Arts and Sciences, believes its important to consider how perspectives will change. As a medical sociologist and health demographer, his research is driven by the desire to understand what contributes to quality of life across societies.

In line with the age-old adage without your health you have nothing, scholars and politicians have recently turned to measures of health and longevity to gauge quality of life, he said. Yet, as my research has consistently shown health is only one, and not even the most important, component of quality of life.

While its difficult to predict the future, Bardos expertise and insight can help society prepare for what the world will look like months or even years from now.

And perhaps its worth considering how each generation might live their lives differently.

UKNow: The COVID-19 pandemic is changing many aspects of our lives. Can we expect some of those changes to be our new normal not just for the next few months, but years?

Bardo: Indeed, many aspects of our lives have been touched if not substantially altered. Our day-to-day behaviors, activities and routines are now shaped by mandates and policies aimed at slowing the pandemic.

Minimal Changes

Bardo: Actions tied to economic activities (e.g., shopping, work, leisure) will likely return to normal once government restrictions are lifted and community concern has diminished. However, our routines will likely continue to be shaped by a now cognizant concern for public health (e.g., hand washing, covering coughs/sneezes, isolating while sick, etc.). At first, these behaviors will likely be driven at the individual level. We may continue to see readily available sanitizing agents in public spaces, and organizations may even start to enforce sick leave policies. These circumstances beg the question, why were these fundamental functions not already ingrained in our society?

Drastic Changes

Bardo: Its apparent that improvements in quality of life are no longer closely tied to technological development. Refrigerators, washing machines, and dishwashers were certainly game changers as they allotted folks additional time for activities that were more enjoyable and/or meaningful. Yet, since the rise of the personal computer, national-level well-being has remained relatively constant.

What do we do with this new technology? We use it to purchase more things, spend more time working and less time in the physical presence of others. In a sense, weve been on a path toward social isolation for several decades by surrounding ourselves with more stuff and fewer people (at least in a physical sense).

Technological development has long been deemed the solution to enhance quality of life. It was widely thought that such advancements would ultimately lead to the good life. Now we may actually have begun recognizing that human interactions and meaningful pursuits are what we crave. Although e-commerce is at an all-time high, were not the least bit happier when packages magically appear on our doorsteps. Many are now working from home, but also yearning for some dry humor at the water cooler. Students had been begging for more online learning opportunities, but now they want nothing more than to come to campus.

Takeaway

Bardo: Im not, nor is anyone else, sure what the future holds, but if we dont take the time now to reflect on our experience, well simply continue to fall subject to the same economic forces that have made life vanillaat best.

UKNow: As unemployment persists, many are concerned about their financial future. How will COVID-19 impact career trajectories?

Bardo: A useful exercise to consider is to draw on what we now know about the long-term implications of the Great Recession and how they differ by age group.

Mid-Career (late Boomers and early Gen-Xers)

Bardo: The current pandemic has ravaged the labor market. Unlike during the Great Recession, mid-career folks may find themselves facing greater challenges compared to those on the verge of retirement. For example, the current mid-career cohort should be in their prime earning years, but they now find themselves hit with a double whammy. The Great Recession stalled their upward mobility early on. Contemporaneously, retirement and old age were reinvented in such a way to extend traditional working age (e.g., 60 is the new 50). Moreover, these shifting age norms at the latter end of the life course have major implications for younger people as well. For example, young folks increasingly find themselves in a precarious state, as adult positions and the privileges they come with continue to dwindle highlighted by a massive increase in mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression.

Relatedly, the current mid-career cohort uniquely lacks the retirement savings that previous cohorts had. This is partially due to the above noted hamper in upward mobility, but also because this mid-career cohort are grappling with increased costs of education for both themselves and their children. Many are also simultaneously supporting their adult children and aging parents, and sometimes even their grandchildren. Macroeconomic circumstances cannot, or will not, provide the same opportunities to achieve the American dream as they once did. The current pandemic only makes the future seem bleaker.

Late Boomers and early Gen-Xers have a close relationship with adversity, and they have received relatively little support along the way compared to previous cohorts. They faced numerous socioeconomic woes at critical life stages. They were children during the Oil Crisis and may have gone without during their impressionable years. They were launching their careers during the dot-com bubble, and they are much more likely to have had made career changes compared to earlier cohorts. They were finally starting to find their way during the Great Recession, and they only recently recovered to pre-Great Recession status. Given the above circumstances, its not surprising that this age group is driving the Deaths of Despair an unprecedented reversal in life expectancy because of increased mortality among whites in mid-life due to suicide and drug and alcohol abuse.

Takeaway

Bardo: In sum, the American dream certainly takes hard work and dedication, but opportunity is a prerequisite. Will opportunities abound post-pandemic? Maybe so. The more important question is, do we want the same opportunities that have provided less than an optimal quality of life?

UKNow: As teens become young adults, how might this pandemic change/shape their views on the areas below:

Higher Education

Bardo: A common strategy among young adults in response to the Great Recession was to shelter in higher education. For many this meant pursuing graduate degrees in lieu of entering the labor market after undergrad. The idea was that the recession would end, things would go back to normal and their lapse in employment would have been used to make themselves more marketable. Whether this strategy was effective remains an open question. What is clear is that the transition to adulthood has remained precarious at best, with even fewer road signs and landmarks than ever before. Moreover, the uncertainty surrounding higher education during this pandemic only adds to this dilemma what to do?

Whether to pursue higher education may seem like a relatively straightforward decision, but this decision traditionally comes at an age when timing is particularly crucial. If young adults arent in higher education making themselves more marketable (we can no longer afford to learn for the sake of learning, or maybe never have), then what will they do? Maybe they will take up low paying jobs that are now deemed essential. Or as suggested by our political leaders, they may even find something new. Regardless of what path young people choose, were likely to see another baby bust.

Family Formation

Bardo: Child rearing is a key component of family formation, and its timing in the life course has major implications for ones remaining years. Thirteen years ago, America was only coming to terms with decades-long shifts in traditional family values driven by an increase in female labor participation, two earner households and divorce rates. This is evidenced by attitude and subsequent policy shifts surrounding same-sex marriage and LGBTQ rights.

While current circumstances reflect traditional telltale signs for a baby boom (what else is there to do than Netflix and chill?), we are going to have a back-to-back baby bust (opposite of baby boom). This not only has major implications for the future trajectories of young adults themselves, but also the many institutions that were designed to serve them. Moreover, who is going to pay the taxes to support our rapidly aging population?

Social Justice

Bardo: The unique socialization of Gen-Z (the children of Gen-X) has led to increased versatility in anticipation for a bumpy road. While certainly versatile, Gen-Z is often stereotyped as being overly individualistic or even narcissistic. On the one hand, the individualistic stereotype rings true. For example, there is no cultural glue that binds this cohort together nor any that ties them to their adjacent Millennials. This is largely due to technological development and the related rise in user-generated content. On the other hand, the narcissistic stereotype couldnt be further from the truth. For example, this cohort is leading the way in terms of equality and social justice evidenced by the current protests and the Black Lives Matter movement.

Few cohorts aside from the Silent Generation have faced such levels of uncertainty during their formative years. Likely due to their formative experiences of social deprivation, Gen-Z and the Silent Generation share many characteristics. For example, the Silent Generation is often credited withforming the leadership of the Civil Rights movement. This may also be due to the circumstances of their respective parents, and the unique primary socialization they provided. The Greatest Generation enjoyed the Roaring Twenties and Gen-X soaked up the materialism of the 1980s and early '90s as young adults, and both historical periods were closely followed by turbulent times (i.e., Great Depression and Great Recession). Furthermore, both generations are characterized by a relatively high prevalence of mental health issues. Mental health was not well understood when the Silent Generation was young, but their relatively high levels of cognitive impairment likely reflects the long-term consequences of their exposure to social stressors. How might the COVID-19 pandemic impact both the immediate and long-term mental health of Gen-Z? Might the current movements come to parallel those of the Civil Rights era?

Takeaway

Bardo: Many of the issues that we face today can be linked back to the disappearing middle-class, as the social institutions that were designed to improve our lives (e.g., science, education, and medicine) have fallen under attack and those that were intended to keep us in our place (e.g., religion, marriage, and criminal justice) have simultaneously eroded. The idea of a new normal has been underway for a long time (arguably 50 years), and the current pandemic has only just thrown a wrench in these plans (e.g., What normal were we trying to achieve? Were we actually driving the train?)

UKNow: Protests across the United States are shining a spotlight on social injustice. Does COVID-19 play a role in widening social inequalities?

Bardo: We are certainly a nation divided, and the stressors of the current pandemic have heightened our awareness of our seemingly polar views. Maybe if we all took this time to come together around the common terms of our plight for the good life, we would finally recognize that we have more similarities than differences and that the only way to get there is if we stand together well, at least six feet apart for now.

Older high school coaches learning to navigate the coronavirus pandemic – Sports and Weather Right Now

Former Timberlake and Chewelah football coach Roy Albertson was laid up on a hospital bed on two occasions during his long and successful career, the second ailment more serious than the first.

Albertson was at Chewelah in the late 1990s when he suffered a staph infection in his knee that required a month of hospitalization.

Three years ago, he had a brush with death.

Albertson suffered a heart attack on Timberlakes practice field and had triple bypass surgery, forcing him to miss the 2017 season.

He returned to the Spirit Lake team in 2018 and 2019 but recently decided to step down at age 72.

The coronavirus pandemic was the driving force in his decision.

I retired because of the virus, said Albertson, referencing preexisting health conditions that could potentially be fatal if he was infected.

He had a 57-20-1 record at Chewelah before making the move to Timberlake in 2003, leading the Tigers to a 108-64 record in 17 seasons, including 16 playoff appearances and six trips to the state semifinals.

Albertsons age and health put him in a dangerous demographic while navigating a virus thats infected nearly 3.8 million Americans and contributed to the deaths of over 140,000, the overwhelming majority aged 60 and older.

Being around dozens of young athletes and assistant coaches has been a 47-year labor of love, but its not worth the risk, Albertson said.

The virus is worse now that I ever thought it would be in our area, Albertson said of the recent spike of COVID-19 infections in Kootenai County. I still have the same enthusiasm for young people as I did, but now I just stay at home. I leave for walks and to go to the store with my wife.

I wanted to coach for as long as I could.

Older high school coaches in Eastern Washington and North Idaho have been wary of the disease despite a clean bill of health.

Longtime Mead boys basketball coach Glenn Williams, 61, is in good physical shape, but a few family members including his wife who battles asthma have pre-existing conditions.

Williams is more worried about the potential spread of the infection to a vulnerable population than dealing with the virus himself.

This thing is something weve never seen. Were still learning about the disease, it attacks in different ways to different people, Williams said.

My feeling is that we dont need to be afraid of it, but be prudent how we go about it and open activities. Its a wait-and-see as we accumulate information.

Williams said he would have no problem wearing a mask on the bench if it meant getting back to basketball, but he understands the shutdown.

I miss the kids, but losing sports pales in comparison to the lives were losing, Williams said.

Washington Hall of Fame and University High wrestling coach Don Owen, now an assistant after retiring from his head coaching duties last year, is 62 years old.

In a contact sport like wrestling, Owen has seen diseases spread on the mat, some of which young athletes have developed an immunity, he said.

Owen knows that coronavirus is a much different animal but preaches a healthy lifestyle for people of all ages to help fight the virus.

We have to be very conscious of how we expose ourselves and if we have a good immune system, Owen said. I feel like I have a good immune system, and in wrestling you have to because youre exposed to a lot. The worry is those with a weaker immune system.

What I wish is that people put a lot more focus on keeping our bodies healthy and exercising right now. Good hygiene and good eating habits.

North Central girls track coach Kelly Harmon, 60, says he has lived a more careful life since the beginning of the pandemic.

Harmon wears masks in public, uses more hand sanitizer these days and avoids sizable public gatherings.

I think if I get exposed to it, Id get sick, but it wouldnt wipe me out, Harmon said. I think anybody who is in that 60-plus age group has to be a little worried. Personally, I dont know anybody who has been diagnosed with it.

Global Vegan Food Market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 11.4% over the Forecast Period, Owing to Surging Demand for Plant-based Alternatives across…

The consumers preferences across the globe toward vegetarian and flexitarian food are driving the demand for vegan food products. The consumers are more inclined towards a healthy lifestyle and largely prefer plant-based food products to provide for the nutritional content. The government bodies across the globe are also taking initiative towards introducing vegan food items to reduce animal meat consumption, especially owing to the health concerns and environmental issues associated with it. Industrialized animal agriculture is impacting the environment and animal welfare which is enforcing the government across the globe to take measures for issues related to meat consumption and its adverse effects. China government has taken initiative to reduce its citizens meat consumption by 50%, in a move towards combating global warming. The on-going prevalence of corona virus has further led to implementation of stringent norms in the same regard. Thus, the burgeoning government initiatives and concerns related to health issues among the consumers are the major factors influencing the growth of global vegan food market.

The outbreak of COVID-19 is impacting the global meat industry and thus offers a lucrative investment opportunity for the vegan food market participants. The food and beverage companies are introducing plant-based food products to fulfill the demands of customers for consuming meat by resembling the characteristics of animal-based meat in terms of taste and texture. The same is being achieved by providing plant-based meat substitutes. For instance, Beyond Meat, a U.S. based producer of plant-based meat substitutes, manufactures products that simulate chicken, beef, and pork sausage. Moreover, White Castle, an American hamburger restaurant chain, offers burgers with plant-based meat patties from Impossible Foods, a U.S. based company that develops plant-based substitutes for meat products. A strong inclination by fast-food giants towards investment in this industry is being observed. For example, KFC, an American fast-food restaurant chain is looking into diversify their offering to include plant-based chicken alternatives, since the consumers are increasingly inclined towards consumption of plant-based protein for health and environmental reasons. The companies are also investing towards innovative food products in the vegan range, to cater to the increasing demand among consumers for wider food options. Furthermore, they are also undertaking strategic initiatives to capitalize on the growing demand. For instance, In 2018, Unilever, a multinational corporation, announced the acquisition of The Vegetarian Butcher. The move was largely directed towards expansion of its product portfolio, to include plant-based food products, which are healthier and have lower environmental impact. The increasing diversification towards product innovation is anticipated to further propel the demand for vegan food market over the forecast period.

You need to see Jennifer Lopez’s space buns and baby hairs – Yahoo Lifestyle

From Cosmopolitan

How does J-Lo manage to make our favourite childhood hairstyles look so incredibly hot? Not to bang on about her age (it's just a number, right?), but if we can pull off half the hair looks she can when we're in our 40s and 50s, we'll be happy.

Remember when she got 90s-esque chunky highlights? And when she joined the droves of celebrities ditching their extensions and hair straighteners during quarantine, posting a pic of a gorgeous new wavy bob?

Her sun-kissed, honey-toned locks seem to look amazing whichever way they're styled, complemented by the skin of dreams (that'll be the sun-avoidance and healthy lifestyle, then).

With lockdown rules continuing to lift, celebrities are finally reuniting with their glam squads, and it looks like Jen and her go-to hairstylist Chris Appleton have been busy in the garden with the hairspray.

The singer just shared a grid shot of one of her best hair looks yet: fierce space buns and perfectly-styled baby hairs, alongside the caption: "Baby hairs and moitos "

Christ Appleton also shared the shot on his grid, saying: "Spice up ya life missed ya @jlo" which she replied to with the emoji we agree sums up the look perfectly:

She also posted a picture of the same look on her Stories, crediting the rest of the glam team involved.

We're just waiting for the how-to to drop, because that's our weekend look right there...

Should we forgive Lauren Southern? – The Spectator USA

As a society, we have become exceptionally bad at forgiveness. How much does anyone really deserve? Are they remorseful? What if theyve changed? We barely know where to start anymore.

But now that social media has been around for long enough that people who rose to infamy early on have, in many cases, had enough time to grow up, its important to decide how we judge others. So, when Lauren Southern a free-speech activist or an alt-right neo-fascist, depending on your source returns to the public eye seeking to revive meaningful, sane conversation, how should she be treated?

Southern, a long-haired, blonde Canadian, rose to prominence when in 2016 she legally changed her gender to male in Ontario in less time and with less paperwork than your average health check-up takes. Her rejection of feminism, her pro-Trump advocacy, and her opposition to Islamic immigration solidified her place among the pantheon of outspoken alt-right darlings such as Milo Yiannopoulos and Paul Joseph Watson.

For a long time, Southern flirted with the unpleasant extremes of this movement. In February 2018 she was cautioned by police for handing out flyers in the English town of Luton bearing the slogan Allah is Gay. The previous year she had been detained by the Italian coast guard for attempting to stop a boat carrying shipwrecked migrants to shore.

In 2019, however, something appeared to change. Just after the release of her surprisingly thoughtful and nonpartisan documentary about immigration, Borderless, Southern suddenly disappeared from the public eye. On June 19 this year she posted on her YouTube channel a 17-minute video entitled Why I left, and why Im back. She has, in her words, taken the real-life pill (I hope she never uses this awful phrase again), and in her absence she not only went back to university but also got married and had a son. Now, she wishes to break away from the culture of entertainment and hot-take politics and return to public life making objective documentaries that tell the human story of complex political issues.

***Get a digital subscription toThe Spectator.Try a month free, then just $3.99 a month***

This perfectly reasonable announcement prompted a vicious response from her former fans and allies on the radical right, who felt betrayed. Look down the comment section of her video and you will see innumerable accusations of covert financial profit, admonishments that she should stick to being a mother, and perhaps the most common: Its too late for nuance the mob will come after you either way. Her one-time ally, Paul Joseph Watson, vomited out indefensible abuse at her on Twitter, calling her a fraud and an e-thot before bragging how thirsty she was for him in one of the most embarrassing Twitter displays of the past year.

Others have given Southern a chance. In an interview with Mikhaila Peterson this week Southern spoke about how unhealthy it is for 19-year-olds (as she then was) to become known worldwide for contentious political activism. When ambitious, intelligent but naive young people stumble into political tribes that demand ever-greater allegiance, stifling all shifts of opinion borne out of maturity, we must ask where the blame lies.

Did Lauren bring this all upon herself? Perhaps. I have no time for people who distribute stupid, inflammatory leaflets in Islamic neighborhoods such behavior does as much damage to the cause of proper conservatism as anybody on the radical left. But if Southern changed by becoming a mother and mellowed by experience; if she now seeks to return to the public eye with a more compassionate and thoughtful politics well, good on her, I say. I wish more people would do the same. Shes attractive, too.

It’s time to decide what we want Downriver’s future to look like – Southgate News Herald

It's an interesting time to be alive.

As recently as a couple decades ago, it would be hard to imagine what life looks like today a global pandemic, contentious and divisive politics, super-computer phones in our pocket, and constant access to unchecked information available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

As with any paradigm shift, the way we organize ourselves and our communities has a slight delay following the new habits and technologies we adopt.

After the automobile was created, we began designing our cities with roads suited for car travel, instead of walking. And after we created large industrial factories, we developed dense urban areas where there would be enough housing available for all of the workers at the factories to live nearby a story that resonates very much with the Downriver region.

We're now at a point where it's time to make substantial decisions at a local level about how Downriver will look for our children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. And it starts with the McLouth Steel site in Trenton.

The Trenton Planning Commission is holding an online meeting via Zoom at 7 p.m. July 22 to vote on whether to recommend adopting a new zoning ordinance changing the current names, and some of the land use.

The former McLouth Steel property is currently zoned for mixed use, which allows for office buildings, hotels, restaurants, colleges and public waterfront access. This new plan wants to rezone the property for a new category labeled "industrial waterfront," which includes everything in the new I-1 category like railroad and truck transfer stations, and developments like outdoor shipping storage container yards and power plants.

As a member of the Trenton Zoning Board of Appeals for the past several years, it's required that applicants seeking a zoning change submit a site plan for our review, with the option to set conditional zoning. For instance, if someone wants to build a fence, we may require them to create an angled corner so they can see oncoming traffic.

The problem with a full-scale zoning structure change is that we're writing a blank check to an industrial developer with endless pockets to do whatever he wishes with some of the most important land for our Downriver region's waterfront economic development without even giving us any idea of what he'll do with it, whether it's to build the previously proposed intermodal shipping port or sell it to any other developer to do as they please.

If you and I need to submit a plan to the city in order to build a fence, or put on a hip roof instead of a gable roof, then it only makes sense to require a site plan to rezone one of the region's largest and most important developments in recent history especially considering the precedent this would set with the upcoming closures of the DTE plants in Trenton and River Rouge, and what may be done with those properties in the future.

I ask you to take the time to register and attend the Zoom meeting, which is open to the public, to voice your concerns that Trenton shouldn't write a blank check for rezoning 192 football fields worth of prime waterfront land without the submission of a site plan.

At the very least, we should be allowed to know what we're getting ourselves into when we give up the last bit of control we have left of our region's future.

You can use this link to access the proposed changes, zoning map and register for the meeting to give your public comments via Zoom at 7 p.m. July 22: bit.ly/3h53QUD.

If you're unable to attend, please submit a letter voicing your concerns to be read into the record to the Trenton Planning Commission by 5 p.m. July 20:

2800 Third St.

Trenton, Michigan 48183

Ryan Stewart is a member of the Trenton Zoning Board of Appeals and is running as a Democrat for the Wayne County Commission's 15th District.

The worlds supercomputers joined forces against COVID-19 why such collaborations are critical for tackling future emergencies – The European Sting

This article is brought to you thanks to the collaboration ofThe European Stingwith theWorld Economic Forum.

Author: Dario Gil, Director of IBM Research, IBM

In March, COVID-19 had hit Asia, Europe and the US, and the world was gripped by disbelief. The virus was far deadlier and spread much faster than any disease wed ever had to address in modern times. Fighting back against it, we were surprised once more as we developed new capabilities and new partnerships faster than ever before. Some of these initiatives could shape how global collaborations address risk in our post-COVID future.

We must apply what weve learned during the pandemic on a wider scale and establish a new international organization: the Science Readiness Reserves. It would assess risks and help prepare for future global emergencies from another deadly virus to a super vulcano eruption or a nuclear power plant disaster, and much more. This way once a disaster strikes, we wont be scratching our heads in panic; we will be ready to act and save lives.

What is the World Economic Forum doing about the coronavirus outbreak?

Responding to the COVID-19 pandemic requires global cooperation among governments, international organizations and the business community, which is at the centre of the World Economic Forums mission as the International Organization for Public-Private Cooperation.

Since its launch on 11 March, the Forums COVID Action Platform has brought together 1,667 stakeholders from 1,106 businesses and organizations to mitigate the risk and impact of the unprecedented global health emergency that is COVID-19.

The platform is created with the support of the World Health Organization and is open to all businesses and industry groups, as well as other stakeholders, aiming to integrate and inform joint action.

As an organization, the Forum has a track record of supporting efforts to contain epidemics. In 2017, at our Annual Meeting, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) was launched bringing together experts from government, business, health, academia and civil society to accelerate the development of vaccines. CEPI is currently supporting the race to develop a vaccine against this strand of the coronavirus.

How a global consortium established quickly is fighting COVID-19

One successful current initiative is the COVID-19 High Performance Computing (HPC) Consortium. A U.S. organization with an international dimension, its offering some of the worlds most powerful computers, for free, to researchers trying to fight COVID-19. More than 60 teams of scientists are already relying on them, with new researchers joining weekly. The Consortiums members collaborate with the Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe (PRACE), an organization that unites supercomputing partners on the other side of the Atlantic. Researchers from both bodies regularly exchange data, ideas and results.

The history of Supercomputing at IBM

Image: IBM

Being a public-private partnership with government support, the Consortium solves key problems for researchers racing against time. To get results quickly, modern science often needs a computing boost to sift through thousands of potential designs of molecules when developing a new drug, or to simulate the spread of the virus in its second or third waves. Typically, to get computing power on a supercomputer, researchers submit a proposal and wait weeks or even months just for access. And it needs support of policymakers to zoom past any typical bureaucratic hurdles.

The COVID-19 HPC Consortium is providing exactly that. One team, led by Amanda Randles, a biomedical engineer at Duke University, has developed airflow simulations for a new device to split a ventilator between two or more patients. For its work, the team needed more than 500,000 compute hours; through the Consortium, they got matched with a specific supercomputer, and completed research that might have taken months in just six weeks. The scientists have just submitted their results to the FDA for approval.

Randles teams result is not the only success story of the Consortium. Researchers at British AI startup PostEra used a different supercomputer to build a crowdsourcing platform for scientists worldwide to submit drug designs. The team received more than 5,000 submissions and managed to process them within just a few days something they wouldnt have been able to do without the Consortium. Over the past two months, theyve narrowed the number of designs to around 200 and tested them in the lab. Theyve discovered that 21 molecules seem to be effective against the targets in the key protein within the coronavirus. Their next step will be to make sure the drug is fit for purpose before it can go into humans, the most important part of the drug discovery cycle.

How collaboration could aid in future crises

Impressively, it took less than a week to launch the Consortium and for all partners to agree on the ground rules. We quickly set up the proposal review and matching committees to approve and find the best supercomputing partner for each team. The Consortium is the proof that we know how to quickly mobilize the worlds talents to solve global problems. Im certain that it could be done again, on a much wider scale, and applied to future emergencies.

Together with the Chair of Harvard Astronomy department Avi Loeb, Ive recently voiced my thoughts on just that how to expand the idea of the Consortium to create a new body, the Science Readiness Reserves. This group, led by peer-nominated experts, would assess and respond to future global risks and emergencies. It would be run by scientists, experts in a variety of fields able to address the consequences of an asteroid impact, a mega drought, a powerful earthquake, a volcano eruption or another, even deadlier, disease.

We know how to quickly mobilize the worlds talents to solve global problems. Im certain that it could be done again, on a much wider scale, and applied to future emergencies.

Dario Gil

Such an organization could unlock technological capability. Critically, this body would ensure that scientists always have access to technologies they need (such as a supercomputer or perhaps soon even a quantum computer) otherwise difficult to obtain to deal with and prevent future emergencies. The aim would be to assess risks and put together a set of specific scientific capabilities that would be of value in the future, along with recommendations for the government, the health systems, emergency services, economists, other researchers, the media and the public.

Key to SRRs success would be matchups between the research team submitting a proposal and other scientists in academia or industry, or organizations in a specific field (say, the World Health Organization in the case of a pandemic). Such strategic partnerships between industry, academia and government could dramatically speed up research and development and be key for promoting creativity through the exchange of data and ideas.

Today, scientific talent, expertise, and resources are highly distributed across government agencies, academia and the private sector. Still, global and national bodies deal with specific fields again, take the WHO, or UN, or NASA and their core priority is not solely to assess future risks. And while many groups and movements advocate for wide dissemination of research and greater global collaboration, the SRR would specialize in ensuring that key technologies and expertise are made available to prevent global crises.

Such an organization does not currently exist despite the fact there is no shortage of global emergencies, from climate change to antibiotic resistance to epidemics and pandemics. It might be that before the Consortium, we didnt think industry rivals would be that keen to collaborate. Or it might be because we thought that having separate bodies each targeting a specific global threat is more efficient. Or because it is only recently that technology has matured to the point of anyone can access a supercomputer on the other side of the world through the cloud as if it were standing in their own lab. I think its all of the above but whats clear is that now we have all the ingredients to make it happen.

We need to act now. Policymakers must grasp the importance of such an organization, create the necessary regulatory frameworks and establish direct links with the future SRR experts. We must embrace the open-source approach to software and data sharing.

As we do, we must create the necessary defenses against cyberattacks and other criminals. COVID-19 brought shocking moments in research, including hackers extorting money from the University of California, San Francisco in exchange for COVID-19 research data. Such vulnerabilities are unacceptable. We have to make sure we have necessary protocols in place to protect the work of SRR experts on future known unknowns so that we can act on their recommendations and design new drugs or materials promptly and efficiently.

I know we can do it. The HPC Consortium is the case in point to prove it. The COVID-19 crisis has shown us all how unprepared we were to fight this global challenge. Thankfully, the crisis has also taught us we have the capability to make great strides once we pool our resources and talents. Realizations like that will boost our chances to survive this and other crises to come.

Lift Every Voice: The Urgency of Universal Civic Duty Voting – Brookings Institution

Imagine an American democracy remade by its citizens in the very image of its promise, a society where the election system is designed to allow citizens to perform their most basic civic duty with ease. Imagine that all could vote without obstruction or suppression. Imagine Americans who now solemnly accept their responsibilities to sit on juries and to defend our country in a time of war taking their obligations to the work of self-government just as seriously. Imagine elections in which 80 percent or more of our people cast their ballotsbroad participation in our great democratic undertaking by citizens of every race, heritage and class, by those with strongly-held ideological beliefs, and those with more moderate or less settled views. And imagine how all of this could instill confidence in our capacity for common action.

This report is offered with these aspirations in mind and is rooted in the history of American movements to expand voting rights. Our purpose is to propose universal civic duty voting as an indispensable and transformative step toward full electoral participation. Our nations current crisis of governance has focused unprecedented public attention on intolerable inequities and demands that Americans think boldly and consider reforms that until now seemed beyond our reach.

Our purpose is to propose universal civic duty voting as an indispensable and transformative step toward full electoral participation.

We see voting as a civic responsibility no less important than jury duty. If every American citizen is required to participate as a matter of civic duty, the representativeness of our elections would increase significantly and those those responsible for organizing elections will be required to resist all efforts at voter suppression and remove barriers to the ballot box. Civic duty voting would necessarily be accompanied by a variety of legislative and administrative changes aimed at making it easier for citizens to meet their obligation to participate in the enterprise of self-rule.

Our intervention reflects a sense of alarm and moral urgency, but also a spirit of hope and patriotism. Members of our working group undertook this work to fight back against legal assaults on voting rights guarantees and the proliferation of new techniques and laws to keep citizens from casting ballots. We did so mindful of the publics declining trust in our democratic institutions. We joined together to end a vicious cycle in which declining trust breeds citizen withdrawal which, in turn, only further increases the sense of distance between citizens and our governing institutions.

It would, however, be a great mistake to see only negative portents in our current situation. If some states have engaged in voter suppression, others have enhanced voting rights through automatic voter registration, same day voting, increased opportunities for early voting, and mail ballots. These reforms have had a measurable and positive impact on participationand enjoyed enthusiastic citizen support.

Our nations struggle to realize the fullness of the franchise began in the battles for the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments to the Constitution after the Civil War that constituted our nations Second Founding.1 It continued with the ratification of the 19th Amendment in 1920 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Native Americans were not granted full citizenship until the passage of the Snyder Act in 1924 and were not fully granted voting rights until Utah did so in 1962, the last state to formally guarantee the franchise to indigenous peoples. Nearly a decade later, amidst the Vietnam War in which the youngest Americans were drafted but could not vote, the 26th Amendment extended the franchise to 18-year-olds.

In calling for what has been known as mandatory attendance at the polls (the phrase makes clear that no citizen would be forced to vote for anyone against his or her will), and might now, with the spread of mail voting, be called mandatory participation in elections, we hope to underscore that rights and duties are intimately related. During Reconstruction and the Civil Rights eras, few reforms were more important or more empowering than the right of Black Americans to sit on juries. They demanded that they be included in the pool of those who might be required to sit through trials because their own liberties depended upon being included in the process of judging whether a fellow citizen would be jailed, fined, or set free. In the case of jury service, the right and the duty are one in the same. The same can be said of voting. The franchise, said a voting rights advocate of the Reconstruction era, is an essential and inseparable part of self-government, and therefore natural and inalienable. W.E.B. Du Bois saw voting as central to the larger aspiration of being treated as an equal, a co-worker in the kingdom of culture.2

We also believe our proposals would pass constitutional scrutiny. Our report includes a careful and detailed legal analysis because the issue of the constitutionality has regularly arisen in debates over the idea. Knowing that it would face legal challenge if adopted, we examine the constitutional implications of various implementation and enforcement policies at every level of government. Universal civic duty voting, we argue, should survive legal challenges. It is consistent with our Constitutions guarantees of free speech, robust forms of collective action, and effective government.

A large majority of Americans share our view that voting is both a right and a duty.

In the course of our report, we present public opinion data, gathered explicitly for this study by the Democracy Fund + UCLA Nationscape Project. We freely acknowledge thatfor nowthere is far more opposition than support for the idea of requiring everyone to vote. At the same time, a large majority of Americans share our view that voting is both a right and a duty. Our conclusion from the data is that while nearly two-thirds of Americans oppose mandatory electoral participation, about half the country is at least open to persuasion, a significant opening for a novel concept that has never been advanced in an organized and energetic way. To begin this process, this report seeks to answer legitimate criticisms and practical objections. We propose, for example, that all who have a conscientious objection to voting and all who present any reasonable excuse for not doing so would be exempted from the obligation and any penalty. Voters would be free to return a blank or spoiled ballot, and a None of the Above option would also be included.

We also address equity concerns related to penalties. Even small fines could be discriminatory against poor people, and immigrants rights activists raise legitimate concerns that inadvertent voting by noncitizens could subject them to unfair penalties. These concerns shaped our recommendations which make clear that the fine for not voting be very small and be set aside for those willing to meet a very modest community service requirement. The fine would be limited to no more than $20, it could not be compounded over time, nor would civil or criminal penalties be imposed for not paying the fine. If the experience in Australia and other nations with versions of compulsory voting can be taken as a guide, most nonvoters would never face a fine. We also detail protections for noncitizens to prevent exploitation of the system by public officials hostile to immigrants.

Our emphasis is not on imposing sanctions but on sending a strong message that voting is a legitimate expectation of citizenship. Nations that have embraced carefully implemented versions of universal civic duty voting have enjoyed dramatic increases in participation. Compulsory voting makes democracy work better, concluded Lisa Hill of the University of Adelaide, enabling it to function as a social activity engaged in by all affected interests, not just a privileged elite.3

Nations that have embraced carefully implemented versions of universal civic duty voting have enjoyed dramatic increases in participation.

The countrys politics typically places the interests of older Americans over the interests of the younger generationswhich, by definition, makes our system less forward-looking. This problem is aggravated by the under-representation of the young in the voting process. Their participation is held down by rules and requirements that are easier for older and more geographically settled Americans to follow and to meet. As part of our proposal to declare that all adults are required to vote, we propose many ideas, beginning with election day registration and an expansion of voting opportunities, that would welcome the young into full participation. Since the economic fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic is placing particular burdens on young Americans, especially those just entering the workforce, their engagement in the democratic project is more vital than ever.

Universal civic duty voting would also help ensure increased political participation in communities of color that have long confronted exclusion from our democracy. With the reforms that would necessarily accompany it, civic duty voting would permanently block voter suppression measures. The reprehensible police killing of George Floyd shocked the conscience of the nation and forced its attention to entrenched racial injustice. Floyds death, and those of Rayshard Brooks and Breonna Taylor, called forth large-scale protests around the country against police violence that has long been an enraging fact-of-life in Black neighborhoods. The new movement is demanding a thoroughgoing overhaul of policing but also a larger confrontation with racism. The demand for equal treatment has been reinforced by unequal suffering during a pandemic whose costs to health, life, and economic well-being have been borne disproportionately by communities of color. Voting rights, equal participation, and an end to exclusion from the tables of power are essential not only for securing reform, but also for creating the democratic conditions that would make social change durable. Police brutality, as an expression of systemic racism, is not merely about how Americans are policed but whose voices are heard on policing. Universal voting could amplify long voter-suppressed voices so that long-denied solutions to systemic racism are represented in the voting booth and enacted in legislatures.

Universal civic duty voting would also help ensure increased political participation in communities of color that have long confronted exclusion from our democracy.

Give us the ballot, Martin Luther King Jr. declared in 1957, and we will transform the salient misdeeds of bloodthirsty mobs into the calculated good deeds of orderly citizens.4 As our nation opens its mind and its heart to forms of social reconstruction that were far removed from the public agenda only months ago, we believe that transformative adjustments to our voting system are now in order.

The new activism points to the need for a renewed civic life, and universal voting would assist in its rebirth. Citizens, political campaigns and civil rights and community organizations could move resources now spent on protecting the right to vote and increasing voter turnout to the task of persuading and educating citizens. Media consultants would no longer have an incentive to drive down the other sides turnout, which only increases the already powerful forces working to make our campaigns highly negative in character. Candidates would be pushed to appeal beyond their own voter bases. This imperative would raise the political costs of invoking divisive rhetoric and vilifying particular groups. Low turnout is aggravated by the hyper-polarization in our political life that is so widely and routinely denounced. Intense partisans are drawn to the polls while those who are less ideologically committed and less fervent about specific issues are more likely to stay away. Of course, democratic politics will always involve clashes of interests and battles between competing, deeply held worldviews. But by magnifying the importance of persuasion, universal voting could begin to alter the tenor of our campaigns and encourage a politics that places greater stress on dialogue, empathy, and the common good.5 And some citizens, initially empowered by their votes, would be drawn to deepen their participation in other aspects of civic life.

To say that everyone should vote is the surest guarantee that everyone will be enabled to vote. Stressing the obligation to participate will, we believe, expand the freedom to participate. As we will detail in these pages, civic duty voting must be accompanied by other voting reforms. They include automatic voter registration at state agencies; restoration of voting rights for citizens with felony convictions; early voting; expanded mail-in voting; and no-excuse absentee voting.

But we also need to recognize the disparities in American society that affect participation. This has been put in sharp focus in the 2020 primaries. The high turnout and willingness of voters to adapt to the changes in elections in the face of the pandemic deserves to be celebrated. But we must also recognize that barriers to voting were often concentrated in lower income and Black or Latinx communities, where turnout was suppressed by dramatically curtailed opportunities for in-person voting and distrust of voting by mail. Long lines are voter suppression in action, election lawyer Marc Elias observedone reason the 2014 bipartisan Presidential Commission on Election Administration insisted that no voter should have to wait more than 30 minutes to cast a ballot.6

And while the polemics around easier voting have often taken on a partisan castthe recriminations around the April 2020 primary and State Supreme Court election in Wisconsin in the midst of the pandemic are an unfortunate examplewe would note that a number of Republican secretaries of state and many conservatives support mail ballots and other reforms to ease access to voting. Writing in National Review in support of broad participation through no-excuse absentee and drive-through voting during the pandemic, Rachel Kleinfeld and Joshua Kleinfeld warned: The United States is already at high levels of polarization and historically low levels of trust in government and fellow citizens. We cannot afford an election our people dont believe in.7 This captures the spirit behind our proposals.

[Civic duty voting is] a full embrace of democracy: It insists that every citizen has a role to play in our nations public life and in constructing our future.

Essential as these various enhancements and repairs to our system are, we believe that civic duty voting itself is the necessary prod to the changes we need because it would clarify the priorities of election officials at every point in the process: Their primary task is to allow citizens to embrace their duties, not to block their participation. We see it as a message to political leaders: It will encourage them to understand that their obligations extend to all Americans, not just to those they deem to be likely voters. And we see it as a full embrace of democracy: It insists that every citizen has a role to play in our nations public life and in constructing our future.

Our hope is that this report will spur national discussion in two spheres: the need to make our system more voter-friendly, and the obligation of citizens themselves to embrace the tasks of self-government. Ultimately, we hope our country as a whole can embrace this idea as a decisive step in our long struggle to ensure that all Americans are included in our Constitutions most resonant phrase, We, the people.

This report was authored by the Universal Voting Working Group. The members of our Working Group have participated in meetings, conference calls, drafting, and editing in an 18-month path to this final report. While we may not all agree on every word in the report or every item in the recommendations section, we are all in agreement that the concept of making voting a universal civic duty in the United States would significantly enhance our democracy by broadening civic participation in all communities. We believe it is worthy of a broad public discussion, which we hope to initiate with this report. (Organizations are listed for identification purposes only.)

The Use of Dietary Supplements in the Treatment of Diabetes – Diabetes In Control

Thousands of dietary supplements are available for diabetes treatment, but an examination of available studies found that only three ingredients had consistent evidence to support their claims.

In the United States, dietary supplements are a multi-billion-dollar industry, having generated more than $30 billion in sales in 2016, which is projected to double by 2024. The allure for investing in these products originates from a lack of government oversight by agencies like the US Food and Drug Administration. Unlike pharmaceuticals, the FDA does not require evidence of efficacy and safety before a supplement reaches the market. The result is countless products flooding the market with claims to promote health. Little regulation is in place to confirm the validity of these claims, aside from the FDA preventing such products from using statements claiming to treat, prevent, or cure a disease. Because of this, supplement use among Americans remains high, despite limited evidence supporting their use....

Finally, Good News about Diarrhea! It Starts with Fiber – The Great Courses Daily News

By Roberta H. Anding, MS, Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Childrens HospitalEdited by Kate Findley and proofread byAngelaShoemaker, The Great Courses DailyMany people arent aware that the type of fiber that you add through your food choices can prevent chronic diarrhea issues. Photo By Antonina Vlasova / ShutterstockHow Fiber Treats Diarrhea

One benefit of a high-fiber diet is regulating your bowel function and easing constipation, as fiber adds bulk to your stools. Fiber can also be used to treat diarrhea.

Fiber can lessen or prevent diarrhea by solidifying loose and watery stools, depending on the type of fiber that you take in. If you take a water-soluble (gumming or gelling) fiber such as that found in oatmeal, it adds bulk to the stool, but it also holds water.

I worked for years in the HIV populationindividuals who have AIDSand one of the hallmarks of AIDS is chronic diarrhea, Professor Anding said. How do we blunt that diarrhea? How do we get that water to hold?

They would use pectin, whichif youre familiar with making jellyis the water-soluble fiber that helps that fluid to gel. Professor Anding and her team would add the pectin to water, and when it got to the large intestine, it would help to hold some of that water in place.

Diarrhea is the excessive loss of body fluid, and this technique helped to manipulate that gut physiology by manipulating the type of fiber that you could use to make sure you had optimal functioning.

I could blunt some of the fluid losses in my clients who had HIV disease by getting that water held in the large intestine, Professor Anding said.

In order to successfully treat diarrhea using water-soluble fibers, though, these fibers must have, as part of their matrix, adequate amounts of fluid. The primary role of the large intestine is to regulate fluid balance, so if you dont have enough fluid, and youre taking a water-soluble fiber, you can actually end up with an impactiona worse-case scenario of too much fiber in the absence of fluid.

An impaction occurs when a hardened mass of stool is unable to pass through the colon. Therefore, if youre consuming large amounts of fiber, you must stay properly hydrated.

In fact, dehydration can often contribute to constipation. Keeping this precaution in mind, though, gelling agents such as pectin can effectively treat diarrhea.

About 20 years ago, the BRAT diet was commonly used for the treatment of diarrhea. It consists of bananas, rice, apples, anddepending on whose research you readtea or toast. This diet provides predominantly water-soluble fibers for the management of any kind of gastrointestinal disorderin this case, diarrhea.

The BRAT diet can also help to promote digestive health in other ways, such as lowering the risk of hemorrhoids. If youre not straining to have a bowel movement, youre much less likely to have hemorrhoids.

Although there are many fiber supplements currently on the market, Professor Anding recommends that you eat a variety of high-fiber foods to prevent constipation and diarrhea. The American Dietetic Association is stressing to all consumers that the best benefits of fiber come from the food that we eat and not necessarily supplements.

For many people, thoughparticularly young childreneating a diet full of high-fiber foods may be challenging. Given the list of foodswhich includes celery, beans, oatmeal, apples, and peasthere are going to be many children who reject those foods or prefer those foods in a more processed form.

The processed forms of fiber dont necessarily contain the same benefits as whole foods. For example, fiber benefits can be found in both applesauce and in apples, but the apple filling that is found in many energy bars and cereal bars is closer to a jelly.

According to Professor Anding, this jelly filling is not a good source of fiber. Therefore, if you have a child in the family who doesnt like apples, you should not swap out the apple for the apple filling in a toaster strudel.

However, you can offer applesauce as an alternative, as it is still an acceptable source of fiber. Similarly, you can offer more appealing versions of other high-fiber foods by adding nuts and raisins to oatmeal or making cauliflower mashed potatoes.

Professor Roberta H. Anding is a registered dietitian and Director of Sports Nutrition and a clinical dietitian at Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Childrens Hospital. She also teaches and lectures in the Baylor College of Medicines Department of Pediatrics, Section of Adolescent Medicine and Sports Medicine, and in the Department of Kinesiology at Rice University.
