February 6, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL) Utica Comets The 2013-14 season has been a milestone one for Comets center Jeremy Welsh. After starting out the season in Utica after a trade from the Carolina Hurricanes, Welsh got the call up to Vancouver, where on November 22nd, Welsh deflected a shot from Canucks teammate Ryan Stanton that found the back of the net. "Scoring my first (National Hockey League) goal was a huge relief," Welsh said. "It took me around 20 games to finally net it, and you never know how many chances you are going to get. It was also great to hear from all of my family and friends afterwards."

Reflecting on his experience in Vancouver, Welsh explained that being in the NHL for about twenty games really helped him get a feel for the NHL and their quick style of play. Last season, his first professional one, Welsh also got a quick glimpse of what it takes to play in the NHL, getting called up to the Carolina Hurricanes for five games. Welsh recorded his first career NHL point during this time.

Returning to the Comets on December 31, Welsh has a positive outlook on the second half of the season. "Coming down from Van, it's felt like October here. For the second half of the season, I feel I have a lot to prove. We're (fighting) tooth and nail to make playoffs this year, so it's going to be a good, intense finish." Despite only being back for seven games, Welsh has already made an impact, scoring in the Comets shootout last night where they defeated the Iowa Wild in nine rounds.

Prior to turning pro last season, Welsh enjoyed three successful seasons at Union College, a mere 75 miles southeast of Utica. While playing for Union, Welsh recorded 100 points in 119 games played (53-47-100). His 27 goals during his junior year set a school record and was fourth in the NCAA. "I couldn't have had a better college experience," Welsh described. "There were so many awesome people and the hockey experience was great. I think the college route is great for any hockey player. It helps give you perspective and enjoy life outside of hockey before (hopefully) going pro." Welsh went on to advise youth hockey players to strive towards a college education, but also added that each individual has different situations, so to make sure you pick the best developmental trajectory for your personality and lifestyle.

While coming to Utica at the beginning of the season marked Welsh's return to Central New York, it also served as a reunion of sorts. During juniors, Welsh played for the Oakville Blades, along with Comets forward Brandon DeFazio and Comets center Kellan Lain, who is currently up with the Vancouver Canucks and recently netted his own first career NHL goal. "It's pretty neat, the three of us being in Utica/Vancouver," Welsh stated. "We all live in the same house, and it was great to know guys coming here from Charlotte."

With almost a full second half of the season ahead of him, Welsh looks to make a strong impact down the road and help push the Comets into a playoff position.

February 6, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL) Utica Comets The Utica Comets won for the fourth straight time away from home in a truly wild finish, as they defeated the Iowa Wild 3-2 in a shootout at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

Alex Biega won the game in the ninth round with his first shootout goal this season. Goaltender Joe Cannata put together a career high 43 saves as he earned his fifth victory as a Comet. Nicklas Jensen and Colin Stuart each found the back of the net for Utica, which moved to 17-22-2-4 on the season. Jeremy Welsh and Patrick Mullen also scored in the shootout for the Comets.

The visitors got off to a shaky start as Iowa center Carson McMillan scored his team leading 11th goal of the season to put the Wild ahead by one, 6:17 into the game. McMillan put a backhanded deke through Cannata's legs off of a nice feed from defenseman Jon Landry. Jon Blum also picked up an assist on the play, his 18th of the season.

Utica knotted the score at one as Jensen found the back of the net for the second straight game, with a power-play marker at the 14:44 mark of the first. Jensen buried a nifty feed from Benn Ferriero, who moved to within three of team leader Pascal Pelletier, with his 36th point of the season. Mullen also picked up an assist on the play.

A series of firsts gave Utica its only regulation lead of the evening with just 42 seconds left in the first period. Colin Stuart deflected a shorthanded Jeremy Welsh shot past Iowa netminder Jonas Gustafsson to make it 2-1. The tally was also the first shorthanded goal Utica has scored this season that hasn't come on an empty net. Welsh's assist was his first point in a Comet jersey.

Iowa had a golden opportunity to knot the score at two 4:24 into the second period, as McMillan was awarded a penalty shot after being hooked by Peter Andersson. Cannata was huge with a pad save and Utica remained on top for the time being.

The Wild would tie the game just over 90 seconds later, however, as Zach Phillips scored a power-play goal from the slot. Defenseman Steven Kampfer recorded the primary assist, his eighth of the season, while Landry netted his second point of the night on the play as well.

A back and forth third period did not result in any goals and the Wild would head to overtime for their sixth straight game and fourteenth overall, with the Comets playing bonus hockey for the eleventh time this season. The overtime session saw eight shots fired between the two teams, but neither could break the deadlock.

The Comets took an early lead in the shootout as Jeremy Welsh converted on his first attempt of the season in the opening round. After a Phillips goal in the third round and a Connolly goal in round seven, Patrick Mullen's shot trickled across the line to keep the Comets alive. After the two team's traded misses, Biega ended the game in the ninth round as he snapped a shot past Curry to secure the two points.

The Comets continue their road swing when the visit Milwaukee on Friday evening to face off with the Admirals. Puck drop is slated for 8:00 p.m. from the BMO Harris Bradley Center.

Comets Rebound for 3-2 Shootout Win at Iowa

CHICAGO, Ill. The Utica Comets were on the receiving end of a 4-2 setback to the Chicago Wolves on Tuesday afternoon in American Hockey League action.

Ty Rattie led the way for the Chicago Wolves with three points (1-2-3), while Alexandre Boduc (0-2-2) and Keith Aucoin (0-2-2) picked up two points each. Benn Ferriero and Nicklas Jensen scored the Comets goals.

The Wolves struck first 10:17 into the first period when a Comets turnover in the Wolves zone caught Utica in the middle of a line change and led to a 2-on-1 rush. Keith Aucoin slid a pass past Alex Biega to Rattie who fired the games first goal into an empty net.

A hustle play by Bolduc would give the Wolves a 2-0 advantage with 2:55 to play in the first period. A quick pass from Bolduc to the slot found Chris Porter all alone, who beat Utica goaltender Joacim Eriksson and into the net.

The Comets would get on the scoreboard in the second period when Ferriero fired a wrist shot past Chicago goalie Jake Allen with an assist from Patrick Mullen.

The Comets tied the score six minutes later as Grenier put on a shot on goal and the rebound created a scramble in front of the net.

Nicklas Jensen dug the puck out, spun and fired a shot past Allen to knot the score.

The Wolves would pull the game out of reach when Chris Porter and Adam Cracknell scored back-to-back goals in the third period.

Eriksson stopped 31 of the Wolves 35 shots to take the loss in net, while Allen made 30 saves.

The Comets return to action tonight when they take on the host Iowa Wild at 8:05.

Comets doubled up by Wolves in AHL contest

MORRIS About halfway through Morris home boys basketball game against Reed-Custer on Tuesday, Redskins coach Joe Blumberg lost his voice.

After the Comets went into the MCHS gymnasium and stole a 77-69 win over his team, the raspy Blumberg had little trouble making his point about what went wrong in the previous two hours after his teams first home loss of the season.

I feel like we couldnt get a stop when we needed it. We got driven too much on the perimeter, he said. We let two sophomore score quite a few points. We let them get comfortable. I thought they outworked us. They outplayed us.

Those two sophomores were Travis Schoonover and Brent Headrick. Schoonover ended the game with 25 points and Headrick had 14, while Mason Dransfeldt added 11 and Tyler Foote had 10 in the win.

The score was tied at 53 with about four minutes to play when R-C took control of the game.

At that point, Headrick hit a 3-pointer, the Morris offense turned the ball over and Dransfeldt converted a conventional three-point play aft of an offensive rebound, leading to a Redskins timeout.

To be honest, we struggled to stay between our man and the basket, Blumberg said. When we got down, I thought it was going to be hard to come back because of how poorly we defended them the whole game.

Down 65-59, Morris did get a bucket by Jake Walker at 2:52 but the Comets responded with a basket by Foote and a free throw by Schoonover to build a 68-61 advantage. Two Austin Patterson (18 points) free throws got Morris to 68-63 with 1:41, but Logan Zavala scored three straight points (a field goal and a free throw) to build a 71-63 lead.

Down the stretch, Walker did convert a three-point play and Patterson concluded the games scoring with a 3-pointer, but Foote added a field goal and two free throws and Headrick had two free throws to account for the final score.

We hadnt faced adversity at home to this points and I thought we didnt respond to it well tonight, Blumberg said.

Comets hightail out of Morris with hoops victory

Tonight's Game: The Comets continue their road swing of the Midwest tonight as they pay their first visit of the season to Des Moines, Iowa to take on the Wild. The Comets look to break out of the small funk they're currently in, as they enter tonight's action riding a two game losing streak.

When They Last Met: Tonight is the first meeting between the Comets and Wild.

Comets Outlook: The Utica Comets were unable to complete a season sweep of the Chicago Wolves as they dropped a 4-2 decision at Allstate Arena last afternoon. Chris Porter scored twice for the Wolves, while winger Ty Rattie led the way with three points (1-2-3). Nicklas Jensen and Benn Ferriero scored for the Comets and Joacim Eriksson picked up the loss with 31 saves on 35 shots. Jake Allen made 31 saves of his own for his 19th victory of the season.

Wild Outlook: The Wild were also last in action against Chicago, as they dropped a 3-2 overtime decision on Saturday evening. Rattie once again carried the load offensively for Chicago with two goals, including the game winner with just 29 seconds left in overtime. Dmitrij Jaskin had two points (1-1-2) and Matt Climie picked up the win with 24 saves on 26 shots. Zach Phillips scored for Iowa with just 20 seconds left in regulation to earn the Wild a point. Warren Peters also scored for Iowa, while Jonas Gustafsson made 26 saves in defeat.

For The First Time: Tonight marks the inaugural meeting between the AHL's newest two franchises. Both the Comets and Wild began play during the 2013-14 season, but have yet to meet before tonight. Utica enters tonight's game eight points behind Iowa in the standings, with the Wild currently holding the ninth position in the Western Conference.

Benn But Don't Break: Forward Benn Ferriero extended his team leading goal total to 17 with a second period tally past Jake Allen yesterday. Ferriero is now tied for 16th in the entire AHL in goals, third amongst North Division skaters. The Essex, MA native is two goals away from his AHL career high of 19, from the 2009-10 season with the Worcester Sharks.

Nickstart My Heart: Winger Nicklas Jensen ended a five game pointless streak with a second period marker against Chicago. Jensen, who had previously scored five goals over a five game span before his drought, now has seven goals and 11 points on the season. The Denmark native's scoring total is tied for fifth on the Comets roster.
