Magnus Olsson: Nano-Brain-Implant Technologies and Artificial Intelligence
Magnus Olsson is blowing our mind away in the speech he held in Stockholm, Sweden, in September 2012. Seven years ago, Magnus became a victim of non-consensual experimentation after having visited a hospital. He was sedated and when he woke up; he couldn #39;t recognize himself. His personality had changed. On his own homepage (mindcontrol.se) he explains some years ago: "For me, there was a day in life when everything changed. I went from a life as a citizen in a demo map indicative country into a world where violence and torture was the norm. It was not a journey across continents, but in life circumstances. It also included a science fiction drama that completely shattered my life. My name is Magnus Olsson; I am 38 years old, studied economics at the Cesar Ritz in Switzerland, American University of Paris and Harvard, Boston, USA, during the years 1988-1991. 1994 I started the company Jon Sandman who became a well-known brand in the bedding industry. I managed with my life and had also met a wonderful woman whom I had two children with. They are now 13 to 16 years old. But all this harmony and success came to a sudden end. It happened five and a half years ago. After that, life has been about a constant struggle for survival. In order to cope with but also to be able to tell what has happened to me and get out of the nightmare." Magnus Olsson used to be a very successful businessman. Not only is Magnus highly educated, but he also had a very successful career: as an ...

ORBIT to Supply Aeronautical Telemetry Tracking Systems to Major European Aerospace Center

NETANYA, Israel, Jan. 7, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- ORBIT Communications Systems Ltd., a subsidiary of ORBIT Technologies Ltd. (ORBI.TA), a provider of mission-critical connectivity solutions in a variety of markets, including satellite communications, tracking and telemetry, and communications management systems, today announced that it has won a contract from a major European aerospace center for the supply of two portable telemetry tracking systems. The total value of the deals exceeds one million dollars.

ORBIT's transportable tracking systems, equipped with 4.5-meter and 1.5-meter S-band antennas, respectively, will be used by the aerospace center for highly dynamic aeronautical tracking and telemetry missions. These antenna systems are specially designed to enable fast deployment and can be easily assembled and operated in the field. The 1.5-meter system, in particular, can be carried and assembled in the field by two persons without requiring a mechanical lift. Both systems fit into standard containers to facilitate shipping by road and sea, and allow for easy mobility between different locations.

The tracking systems are operated and monitored using ORBIT's AL-4000 controller, featuring a dual-CPU architecture to enable real-time response for mission-critical data acquisition, as well as an advanced touch-screen GUI. An auto-tracking feed with full redundancy ensures 100% integrity of tracking data over time. In addition, it is possible to use both systems in parallel (from different locations) to create two sets of tracking data, allowing for an additional level of redundancy. ORBIT's systems are proven to operate in extreme environmental conditions, such as heavy winds and cold temperatures as low as -40:oC (-40:oF).

"This strategic project with a leading player in the European aerospace industry is further evidence of our expanding footprint in the European market," said Ofer Greenberger, CEO of ORBIT Communication Systems Ltd. "We are confident that the success of this and other recent projects in this region will lead to additional deployments and new opportunities in the areas of earth observation and telemetry tracking applications."

DUNMORE Exhibiting Materials for New NASA Satellites at AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting

BRISTOL, Pa., Jan. 7, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --DUNMORE Corporation is exhibiting materials that will contribute to a massive seven-year upgrade of the U.S. scientific satellite fleet at the 51st American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Aerospace Sciences Meeting today in Dallas.

DUNMORE will exhibit its MLI (Multi-Layer Insulation) and electrostatic dissipative (ESD) films and tapes at the show sponsored by AIAA, which is the world's largest technical society devoted to the global aerospace community. DUNMORE is a longtime supplier of advanced insulation materials to government and private aerospace and aeronautic projects.

The company will be co-exhibiting with partner Bron Aerotech, Inc. (Denver), a leading provider of high performance tapes, films and fabrics to the aerospace and defense industries. Visit DUNMORE and Bron Aerotech at AIAA Booth # 310.

In 2013, NASA is expected to start a replacement program for its aging science satellite fleet that will see seven new satellites launched by 2020. NASA is a heavy user of DUNMORE's insulating films and tapes. DUNMORE materials protect NASA projects such as the "Curiosity" Mars Rover, Radiation Belt Storm Probe and NuStar black hole detection projects, as well as non-NASA space projects such as the International Space Station and SpaceX Dragon.

DUNMORE MLI insulation blankets cover sensors, parts and assemblies that are exposed to open space. MLI tape insulates wiring and circuitry inside satellites and probes. MLI replaces heavier metals and composites used to shield sensitive space-based systems from cold, debris and radiation.

DUNMORE material is also widely used by subcontractors who build vital systems for NASA projects. They use the company's DUN-SHIELD ESD film during production to protect components from static electricity in clean rooms.

"DUNMORE has played a role in every major NASA project since the Space Shuttle and the Hubble Telescope. We will be contributing to the science satellite upgrade program as well," said DUNMORE Vice President John Jordon. "Our films provide superior protection from extreme temperature and radiation than heavier materials. That enables NASA to devote more of their designs to the sensors and instrumentation that support the satellites' missions."

The AIAA Aerospace Sciences meeting begins on Jan. 7 at the Gaylord Texan Hotel and Convention Center in Grapevine (Dallas/Ft. Worth), Texas. For more information visit: https://www.aiaa.org/asm2013.

Age-related macular degeneration – 2012 Lancet review

From the The Lancet:

Age-related macular degeneration is a major cause of blindness worldwide. With ageing populations in many countries, more than 20% might have the disorder.

Advanced age-related macular degeneration is associated with progressive visual impairment. It includes two subtypes:

- neovascular age-related macular degeneration (wet)
- geographic atrophy (late dry) macular degeneration

What are the risk factors for macular degeneration?

Major risk factors include:

- cigarette smoking
- nutritional factors
- cardiovascular diseases
- genetic markers, including genes regulating complement, lipid, angiogenic, and extracellular matrix pathways

How to diagnose macular degeneration?

Accurate diagnosis combines clinical examination and investigations including:

- retinal photography
- angiography
- optical coherence tomography

What is the treatment for macular degeneration?

Dietary anti-oxidant supplementation slows progression of the disease.

Treatment for neovascular age-related (wet) macular degeneration includes intraocular injections of anti-VEGF agents. The two commonly used anti-VEGF therapies, ranibizumab and bevacizumab, have similar efficacy.

Future treatments include inhibition of other angiogenic factors, and regenerative and topical therapies.

Eros and Thanatos at Milan’s Cimetero Monumentale: "Dedizione: Don’t Tell Anyone The Cause of my Death," Funerary Monument, Piero da Verona, 1914

On a recent trip to Italy with Evan Michelson--co-star of TV's "Oddities" and Morbid Anatomy Library scholar in residence--we paid an impromptu, jet-lagged visit to the wonderful Cimetero Monumentale in Milan. We were both struck by the over-the-top--and, for a cemetery, odd--sexiness of so many of its funeral monuments, particularly the one shown above. I was trying to get to the bottom of this peculiar phenomenon when I came across the following lengthy discussion of the very monument in the book Italian Memorial Sculpture 1820-1940: A Legacy of Love; As it is quite fascinating, I quote it here in its entirety here:

Milan has one of the most enigmatic of erotic monuments. Conceived by Piero da Verona ... for Maria Beruccinia in 1914, it is subtitled Dedizione and inscribed 'Non dire ad alcuno perché sona morta' ... Dedizione translates as "devotion' in English, but in Italian its earlier meaning was 'surrender' or 'submission' and, by extension, 'self sacrifice.' Our curiosity is further incited by the inscrutable inscription 'Don't tell anyone why I'm dead' or, more liberally, 'Don't tell anyone the cause of my death.' The particular kind of graceful femininity was preceded in the works of Canonica and of Domenico Trentacoste... Da Verona must also have been receptive to the sensuality of the 'Genoese Symbolist School"... while the pose may specifically reflect contemporary photography, ranging from artistic poses to soft pornography.... One's immediate reaction is to ask what on earth a sculpture like this is doing in a cemetery. Is there malice in its presence there or in the eye of the beholder?

Evan and I will be returning to Italy in mid-February to finish our project, so expect many more posts like this one. And please--if anyone knows of any must-see Italian Catholica or Anatomica that we should make sure to work into our itinerary, shoot me an email at morbidanatomy [at] gmail.com!

This book, and many other books like it, resides in The Morbid Anatomy Library. The library will be open to the public next Saturday from 2-6. Image is ©Joanna Ebenstein, 2012; click to see larger, more detailed version.Source:

Complete Nutrition opens Casper location

Casperites have a new option for their nutritional supplement and weight loss needs.

Complete Nutrition opened for business Friday in the Studio City Center in east Casper.

The owner of the shop, part of an Omaha, Neb.-based chain of more than 150 stores, said his business is unlike others of its kind because of its emphasis on consultation and education.

We not only have great products that work, we also have people in here that consult for free, said Carson Stratman, owner of the Casper store.

The store located in the same East Second Street building as Five Guys Burgers and Fries and Great Clips is Stratmans fourth location across the country. The Omaha native has also opened locations in Kalispell, Mont.; Minot, N.D.; and Twin Falls, Idaho.

Stratman said Caspers business climate is an ideal fit. He said the city has an ideally sized population base and comparatively low unemployment rates.

At the same time, its not too big where well get lost in the shuffle, he said.

The store will be open seven days a week, run by a staff of about four. Complete Nutrition will offer first-week sales and ongoing discounts for members of the military, police and fire departments.

Stratman said each staff member is trained extensively about each of the products and aims to give each customer a personal and comfortable experience.

Its overwhelming and can be somewhat confusing and intimidating to take the jump into a lifestyle change said Dan Biskup, a consultant at the store. We totally eliminate the confusion and intimidation and offer a nonthreatening environment.

Two immiscible (cannot be mixed) liquids can be separated by a separating funnel. The denser liquid (water in this case) can be drained out first; followed by the less dense yellow oil. The latter part of the video shows how a gadget is made to help housewife drain the oil from a soup that has oil floating on top.
