Compact Liberty 4×4 is Jeep’s old-school stepchild

Jeeps midsize Liberty sport-utility is decidedly old school. Consider it as a sort of modern replacement for the much-loved Jeep Cherokee, a vehicle that had its origins way back in 1984 when the late American Motors owned the Jeep brand. Back then, the Cherokee broke new ground by employing a unibody structure in place of the traditional body-on-frame construction common to off-road vehicles. The Liberty also goes the unibody route, as do nearly all the current compact crossover vehicles, but for Jeep duty its a very heavy-duty unibody structure. The Libertys suspension is biased toward off-road application, which means that although its tough enough to handle rough stuff in the boonies, its also fairly softly sprung. Toss in long suspension travel and a high center of gravity, and the on-road result is a fair bit of body roll through corners, but a relatively comfortable highway ride. Thus designed, the Liberty 44 traverses rocks and ruts other CUVs wouldnt or shouldnt dare attempt. The tall, boxy styling permits upright seating and plenty of head room, along with excellent visibility. The well-padded front seats in our Sport-model tester were quite comfortable; the rear bench seat not so much. The cabin feels narrow, exacerbated by the huge transmission hump that eats into footwell space and the intrusion of front-door armrests. The dash and doors are clad with uninviting, industrial-looking, hard black plastics. Big, round gauges are easy to read, and the secondary controls are simple, sturdy and generally self-explanatory. The overall effect is a design thats at least a generation behind the Libertys fresher competitors, but still functional.

But where the Liberty really falls behind the times is its propulsion.

Power comes from a 3.7-liter V-6 producing a modest 210 horsepower and 235 pound-feet of torque. Shackled to an archaic four-speed automatic transmission, acceleration is at best sluggish, and fuel economy is mediocre.

Chrysler will discontinue production this month of the 3.7 V-6 and possibly replace it with a smaller, 3.2-liter version of its much-acclaimed 3.6-liter, DOHC Pentastar V-6 when a modern, redesigned Liberty is introduced early next year as a 2014 model. No doubt a new transmission will accompany the engine upgrade. Assuredly the redesign will address all the issues that keep the current Liberty from being very competitive in an ever-expanding market niche.

But count on this: The new Jeep will dominate the segment in off-road ability. It will still be a Jeep, after all.

Lady Liberty's Allure Endures

It's fitting that the only way to get to the Statue of Liberty is by boat. After all, it was by boat that the immigrants of old the grandparents and great grandparents of many Americans arrived in this country. As they entered New York Harbor, they would be greeted by the majestic, 22-story monument her torch a beacon of liberty, welcoming them to the new world.

Visiting the statue today, you can witness a similar sight. To get to the island you need to travel by ferry from either Battery Park in New York City or Liberty State Park in Jersey City, NJ. Of course this ride is far shorter than the trip from Europe, but on summer days the boat is hot and brimming with huddled masses of tourists, who by journey's end, are definitely yearning to breathe free.

The Statue of Liberty is located on Liberty Island, and its full name is Liberty Enlightening the World. A gift from the people of France, the statue was dedicated in 1886. About 4.5 million people visit her each year and it's easy to see why. In a modern city of soaring sky scrapers, Lady Liberty stands out as unique a great work of art on a truly colossal scale.

Dennis Mulligan, supervisory park ranger for visitor services at the Statue of Liberty National Monument, says people are drawn to the statue because she "represents something that is still so relevant in this world. People come to reflect and remember what an amazing gift liberty is."

These visitors come from all backgrounds and from all around the globe. Mulligan says "when you walk around the island it is not uncommon to hear 20 or 25 different languages spoken."

Currently the inside of the statue is closed as renovations are made. Though the interior of the statue itself will not be altered, renovations to the interior of the base will be made and include the addition of new code compliant stairways, updates to mechanical, electrical and fire suppression systems, new elevators and renovated bathrooms. The inside is not scheduled to reopen until at least the fall, but no exact date has been set.

Even when the interior of the monument is open, only a fraction of the 12,000 to 15,000 thousand people who visit Liberty Island each day are allowed in. Staff allows 3,500 people a day to enter the structure and only 250 a day are able to go up to the statue's crown. Although some same day passes to go inside the pedestal are given out early each morning, Mulligan recommended advance reservations. He said you usually need to book a pedestal pass about one to two weeks in advance and a visit to the crown usually requires a reservation made 3 to 6 months in advance. Visitor access to the observation area on the torch has been closed since 1916.

However, even just visiting the outside of the statue is well worth the trip. I grew up not far from New York City, and had seen the statue from a distance many times but I had never visited Liberty Island prior to this story. Standing in its shadow, the statue is beautiful and awe inspiring and I was surprised by just how big it is.

Liberty Island is also full of historical information about the statue and there's a restaurant and picnic area with great views of the harbor and lower Manhattan. Also, Liberty Island is next to Ellis Island and you can stop at Ellis Island and the Immigration Museum on the way back to Manhattan for no extra admission charge.

Mulligan said the park is at its least crowded during the week right after Labor Day because kids have just gone back to school.

Liberty Ross and Rupert Sanders

Liberty Ross wants to meet with Robert Pattinson.

The 'Snow White and the Huntsman' actress was devastated when her husband Rupert Sanders had a fling with Robert's girlfriend Kristen Stewart and now she hopes to have a chat with the 'Twilight Saga' hunk so they can compare stories.

A source told Hollywoodlife.com: 'Liberty is still furious with what happened and wants answers. She has not spoken to Rob yet, but wants to see him and compare stories. She is hoping they can bring some comfort to each other.'

This comes after it was revealed last week that Robert wants to talk to Liberty to get some clarity on the situation and check if Kristen's story that there was no full blown affair is true.

An insider said: 'He needs to know for his own peace of mind if theirs was just a fleeting moment.

'He hopes Liberty can help him find the answers he so desperately craves.

'Nothing is very clear at the moment but perhaps a meeting would lend some clarity to the situation. He needs to know the truth.'

LIBERTY Dental Plan Sponsors Smile Keepers Program for Seventh Year

IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

LIBERTY Dental Plan (LIBERTY) proudly observed their seventh annual sponsorship of Smile Keepers, a community dental screening program in Sacramento County. LIBERTYs contribution for the dental hygiene public service program received extremely positive results, with over 1,100 local school-age children receiving valuable dental care from this years efforts.

The Smile Keepers team of volunteer staff took mobile dental vans to over 23 public elementary schools and community events last year to reach high-risk, low-income areas where local children are less likely to have the opportunity to see a dentist.

Over 660 kindergarten-aged children learned the importance of dental hygiene when Smile Keepers visited elementary classes across Sacramento, and provided the young patients with oral check-ups and at least one coat of varnish. Another 446 kids received dental screenings, fluoride varnish applications, and referral resources at community events such as Back to School Fairs, and Family Resource Center Events. Additionally, over 5,000 LIBERTY fliers containing proper oral health tips were distributed to children and their parents.

Melinda Bitney, Sacramento Network Manager of LIBERTY Dental Plan, commended Kate Varanelli, Sacramento County Dental Health Program Coordinator, and The Smile Keepers team of volunteer staff for their successes with this program and its mission to introduce healthy dental habits to the children of Sacramento County. LIBERTY Dental Plan has continued its financial commitment in support of this invaluable low-income preschool oral health program in Sacramento County since 2005, providing dental screenings, fluoride varnish applications, oral health education information and follow-up on those children needing dental services. LIBERTY is proud of our partnership with The Smile Keepers Program and the benefits it brings to the children of Sacramento County.

Marijuana will be legal by 2016, Libertarian candidate predicts

SEATTLE Gary Johnson, the Libertarian Party nominee for president, predicted Thursday that marijuana will be legal nationwide within the next four years.

Johnson, the former governor of New Mexico, said he thinks that pot legalization will be approved by voters in Washington and Colorado this fall, helping to spur other states to follow suit.

We are at a tipping point here on this issue, Johnson said in an interview during a visit to the Seattle area as part of his longshot campaign.

Johnson, who unsuccessfully pushed for marijuana legalization as governor of New Mexico a decade ago, has admitted to smoking pot as recently as 2008, when he was recovering from a paragliding crash.

He said, The world will be a better place when it is legal, because police will go out and fight real crime, court dockets wont get as filled up, and maybe we can reduce the highest incarceration rate in the world.

Recent polling has offered varying pictures of the prospects of Initiative 502, which would legalize and tax the sale of marijuana in Washington.

An Elway Poll released last week found that 46 percent of registered voters supported the measure, while 44 percent opposed it. But a KING-TV/SurveyUSA poll released days earlier found the measure with 55 percent support versus 32 percent against.

One thing is clear: The initiative has a better chance of passing than Johnson has of becoming president. His campaign has only raised about $1 million President Obama and his Republican rival Mitt Romney have each raised about $300 million and he isnt being included in most polling.

But Johnson, who touts himself as the only third-party candidate who will appear on the ballot in all 50 states, is likely to play a role in November by taking away votes from the major candidates.

The Obama campaign in particular is hoping Johnson will siphon off votes from Romney, The Associated Press reported earlier this week. According to The AP, the campaign figures Johnson will appeal to Republican voters, in part because he ran for governor of New Mexico as a Republican and sought the GOP presidential nomination before running as a Libertarian.
