Hanna Skandera: Gov. Martinez’s choice for Education Sec.

REPUBLICAN BABE ALERT!

From Eric Dondero:

Hanna Skandera (yes, that's her real name), has been nominated by New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez to head the Public Education Dept.

She is originally from Florida. She is also a former Fellow at the libertarian Hoover Institution at Stanford, California. Hoover.org

Skandera is known for taking a hard as nails approach to education.

From KOAT TV Abq.:

"We want more resources, but are resources the fundamental change agent? No, good teachers and good principals are, " Skandera said.

And on teacher performance:

"If a teacher is not bringing that growth and progress, we need to acknowledge it and say enough is enough," Skandera said.

She has been accused of being a free market reformer "ideologue."

From a column by Emanuele Corso in NMPolitics.net, "The problem with Skandera" March 17:

Hanna Skandera is a foot soldier in an ideological war taking place right now against working people – teachers and other unionized workers. This is the national agenda of the organizations she is and has been affiliated with. The children of New Mexico ought not be used as pawns in a national political strategy.

She is currently serving as Sec. Designate, but not yet ratified by the NM Legislature.

A New, Effective Treatment for Restless Leg Syndrome: Masturbation | Discoblog

Spasms. Burning sensations. Sleep deprivation. To those suffering with restless leg syndrome (RLS), these are nightly afflictions. New research suggests that orgasm by masturbation may be a great way to treat the condition.

RLS is a neurological disorder that afflicts upwards of 10% of people in the U.S. and Europe: As RLS-sufferers try to sleep, their legs experience burning, tickling, aching, and itching sensations; these uncomfortable feelings build up until the leg spasms out of control. This cycle repeats throughout the night, writes news.com.au Technology Editor Peter Farquhar, and “it’s not unusual for people who suffer RLS … to describe it as torturous.”

So why do some people’s legs do this? According to the NIH, “in most cases, the cause of RLS is unknown,” though “it may have a genetic component.” Nevertheless, experts do have some inkling of the cause, as the NIH reports on their website:

Considerable evidence suggests that RLS is related to a dysfunction in the brain’s basal ganglia circuits that use the neurotransmitter ...

First Murmurs: Susana Martinez for VP

From Eric Dondero:

The Colorado Republican Party held a big fundraiser dinner on March 25. The keynote speaker was New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez, making her first out-of-state appearance since she became Governor.

The Colorado Statesman reports:

The nation’s first Latina governor told Colorado Republicans to stick to their guns but not to be too tied to traditional labels in the next election at a fundraising dinner on March 25 in Lone Tree.

New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez said serious talk about issues, not the usual partisan rhetoric, is what Republicans need in her speech...

Quoted from her speech centered on how to win Hispanic votes:

“What you do is you talk to them about the issues that are important to them, as they are to most American families, and you ask them to consider the candidate, not the party. And that’s how they start to vote and cross party lines, for the best candidate.”

And then this nugget of info:

The New Mexico governor — a rising GOP star mentioned as a possible vice presidential candidate in the 2012 elections — was only one of the draws for the fourth-annual fundraiser.

Editor's note - This website was an early and enthusiastic supporter of Susana Martinez for Governor.

Sonoluminescence Theory

I have searched the current knowledge data base about the principles governing sonoluminescence, and there are many theories regarding this subject, and all come up short of applying known physics to the problem of the energy concentration in the bubble.

YAY! It’s A Riddle!

UPDATE:  SOLVED by Dwight at 12:41 CDT

I cannot believe it’s already Saturday.  I’m still working on Monday.  I tell you what; the hurrider I go, the behinder I get.  We’re already here at a new riddle, and I still owe a post on the LAST riddle.  Ever have weeks like that?  I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once.  This whole week has been that way.  Don’t give up on me, Jerry.  I’m still working on your post.

Moving right along, I have a nice little riddle for you this week.  You’ll be looking for an object found in the real world…

Really cool image from Till Credner, http://www.AllTheSky.com

…of course, it also figures prominently in fiction.

While today’s object was known to our ancestors, it has a close companion which was only discovered in the 19th century.

In addition to its place in fiction, this object was a star with ancient cultures, too.  You could say it was royalty.

Today’s object gets its name as a comparison to something with which it has very little in common.

You’ll find this object’s hauntingly beautiful name attached to many things in modern life, not the least of which are some honking big boats and a heavy metal band.

This thing is located in our neighborhood, but it’s commonly mistaken for something in our back yard.

Beautiful as it may be, astronomers expect this object to really put on a show anytime in the immediate or near (or relatively near) future.

It is rumored that Clark Kent has a connection to this object.

Ni-i-i-i-i-i-i-ice

What do you think?  Ready to jump right in with the answer?  Well, you know where to find me… all alone… waiting for someone to come talk to me…  Anyway, you know very well I shouldn’t be left alone and unsupervised.
