Greece to Sell of Islands

greece islands for saleI am getting conflicting reports from newspapers around the world about the state of Greece’s many islands. Recent articles in the Guardian have reported that Greece is selling up to four of their private islands through Private Islands Online. However, the Guardian recently retracted this statement stating that it was inaccurate. The same has been said in the New York Daily News.

The New York Daily News had this to say:

As the cash-strapped country struggles to repay its debt, it is putting big swaths of land on some its 6,000 islands up for sale or long-term lease, The Guardian reports. Greece denies these allegations, saying it has “no involvement” in the sale of the islands and calling the report “insulting” and “untrue,” the Wall Street Journal says. With these conflicting reports, it’s unclear what’s going on, but here’s what The Guardian dished about Greece’s alleged plan to sell islands:

Building Your Own White iPhone 4 [Mod]

If you were geeked on the white iPhone 4, but disappointed to see that they wouldn't be shipping until late July, you could always just build your own. Engadget put together a white iPhone 4 with third-party parts and it looks, well, like a white iPhone 4. Though it's missing an earpiece grill, lens cover, LED diffusor, and a white Home button, it's a pretty neat mod for users who just can't wait for the white version. There's a Michael Jackson joke here but yeah, we're not going there. [Engadget] More »

Nuts as Natural Cholesterol Busters

Nuts can generally lower your chances of suffering from cardiovascular maladies if eaten regularly throughout the week.

In the endless battle against heart disease and bad cholesterol, one type of food is standing out from the crowd of ‘would be’ super foods in terms of performance: nuts.

Several studies in the US and around the world have already attributed the power of nuts to lower LDL (or “bad cholesterol”) and generally improve a person’s cardiovascular profile.   According to a more recent investigation of the health benefits of nuts, headed by Loma Linda University researchers, consuming more than two ounces of nuts everyday for a few weeks produced long-lasting, positive effects.

The study involved more than five hundred respondents (males and females), none of which were taking any medications to control their blood pressure or cholesterol levels.  After approximately two months of natural “nut therapy”, the findings are as follows:

  • 5.1% total cholesterol reduction
  • 7.4% LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol reduction
  • 10.2% reduction of triglycerides
  • 8.3% improvement of bad cholesterol & good cholesterol ratios

Who will benefit the most from eating nuts?  The researchers have pointed out three key groups that will benefit the most, based on the respondent profiles and the results of the actual study:

  • Individuals who are generally slim or of normal weight
  • Individuals who already have a high level of “bad cholesterol” or LDL cholesterol
  • Individuals whose main diet is composed mainly of high-fat foods

As can be seen from the three profiles, nearly everyone can benefit from consuming nuts on a regular basis.  And there are even more reasons to love this health food: according to Joan Sabate MD, one of the key researchers of the Loma Linda University study, nuts are packed with essential nutrients such as protein and fiber, which makes it an ideal snack.

If you like the idea of lowering your LDL cholesterol, you will not be stuck with oatmeal-based snacks anymore – you have a potent, alternative choice in the form of nuts.  All nuts will provide the same heart-healthy benefits.  So whether you love pecans or macadamias, your heart is still getting much needed help from the natural compounds found in nuts.

More reasons to love nuts

Need more reasons to start munching on nuts more often? Here they are:
1. Eating at least 1 ounce of nuts everyday can reduce your risk for developing coronary heart problems by a whopping forty percent.  That is almost half the total risk for this devastating group of cardiovascular diseases.

2. As early as 2004, the US Food and Drug Administration has already recognized the efficacy at which walnuts can lower blood cholesterol levels.  According to studies, walnuts contain lots of omega-3 fatty acids.  In addition to the heart-healthy fatty acid, walnuts also come with a healthy dose of fiber and vitamin E, which can help reduce cell damage due to free radicals.

Fiber on the other hand, encourages a healthy digestive process by helping ’sweep away’ the solid waste.  Getting enough fiber everyday is becoming a problem in modern society because many modern diets are high in fat and animal protein but low in roughage.  Eating walnuts and other nuts packed with fiber can help reduce the problems associated with low-fiber diets.

3. What about peanuts?  Peanuts are not really nuts; they come from plants that are part of the legume family.  Fortunately, peanuts have the same chemical compounds as most nuts.  So when you are eating peanuts (a type of legume) you are still getting the advantages of eating ‘true nuts’.

4. According to studies on pistachios, the nut can slightly reduce the LDL cholesterol in the body and raise the good cholesterol level.  I’m actually snacking on some pistachios right now as I’m writing this article!

5. Plan to get pregnant anytime soon?  If you do, eating nuts gives you access to a healthy source of folic acid. Folic acid is an important compound that prevents fetuses from developing physical and neurological abnormalities.

6. According to a study performed by researchers from the Physician’s Health Study, people who ate nuts at least twice a week are at less risk of dying from heart attacks than those who did not.

7. Peanuts contain the heart-healthy compound resveratrol which has been linked to the decreased incidence of heart disease in French society.  Though you get less resveratrol with peanuts, consuming peanuts regularly can supply you enough of the compound to ward off heart problems.

Tips for healthy munching

While nuts offer a lot of health benefits, it still has calories and some amount of fat.  Here are some tips for healthy munching:

1. Avoid eating salted nuts; the sodium used for flavor enhancement can raise your blood pressure.  Go for plain or unsalted commercial nuts.  Salt doesn’t really add much depth to a nut’s natural flavor.

2. If you are eating more nuts, you have to reduce your intake of other snack foods like potato chips and sodas.  (As an added note, if you like soda with your snacks, try substituting it with water or natural fruit juices).

3. If you like fresh greens, chop some nuts and add them to your salads. The texture and crunchiness of nuts will greatly improve your salad.  Also, you are getting even more fiber from eating fresh greens!

Secondhand Smoke May Increase Psychological Stress, UK Study Says

Exposure to secondhand smoke produces psychological stress and predisposes individuals to a higher risk of being hospitalized due to psychiatric illnesses.

In a study performed by researchers from the University College London, it was found that individuals who were exposed to secondhand smoke were more likely to suffer from psychological distress than people who were not exposed. The risk of psychological distress from secondhand smoke exposure is a staggering 50% – a significant risk percentage.

In addition to psychological stress, it was also found that people who regularly inhaled other people’s smoke were 3 times more likely to be admitted to a psychiatric facility in less than 7 years.  Smokers on the other hand, are four times more likely to be hospitalized due to psychological distress and other psychiatric problems.

The dangers of passive smoking

The researchers were able to measure the degree of a person’s exposure to nicotine by marking and measuring the compound cotinine, which is the chemical byproduct of nicotine after it has been metabolized/processed by the body.  The compound cotinine can be found in a person’s saliva.  The UK study tracked more than 5,000 smokers and 2,000+ non-smokers; all respondents of the study had no prior history of mental illnesses.

Within six years of the study, forty-one individuals from both the groups were admitted to a psychiatric facility.  More than fourteen percent of all the subjects of the UK study reported some degree of psychological stress.  After filters were applied, the researchers stated that despite differences in social circumstance, the risk factors still applied to both smoker and non-smokers. The study made use of a general questionnaire, which allowed the researchers to measure the exposure of secondhand smoke.

Based on the study, “passive smoking” or mere exposure to secondhand smoke increases  a person’s risk for psychological stress by more sixty percent. Prior to the more recent UK study, earlier animal studies showed that tobacco can alter an animal’s mood, which suggested a link between tobacco use and clinical depression in humans.

Tobacco: a poor stress reliever

This study shows that tobacco use is not a good coping strategy – instead of providing stress relief, it actually produces psychological stress. In a study published by the Journal of Pediatric Psychology (Oxford University Press) it was found that younger individuals are more prone to using tobacco as a coping strategy against stress.  It was found that smoking did not provide any significant stress relief to the respondents.

The Beautiful Game can kill you: soccer/football managers and viewers at high risk for heart disease

Almost half of England's football managers have "significant" heart problems and their life-consuming, high-pressure jobs are a "recipe for potential disaster" according to cardiovascular experts. This is hardly surprising considering the range of emotions demonstrated by Fabio Capello (age 64), the current manager of the England national football team, in the video below:

A stressful soccer match affects everybody involved including the spectators.

The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup, held in Germany from June 9 to July 9, 2006, provided an opportunity to examine the relation between emotional stress and the incidence of cardiovascular events. Cardiovascular events occurring in 4,000 patients in the greater Munich area were prospectively assessed by emergency physicians during the World Cup.

On days of matches involving the German team, the incidence of cardiac emergencies was 2.66 times that during the control period. For men, the incidence was 3.26 times that during the control period, and for women, it was 1.82 times that during the control period.

On those days, the highest average incidence of events was observed during the first 2 hours after the beginning of each match.

Viewing a stressful soccer match more than doubles the risk of an acute cardiovascular event. In view of this excess risk, particularly in men with known coronary heart disease, preventive measures are urgently needed.

This Tuesday at Observatory! Torino:Margolis Performance

This Tuesday! Morbid Anatomy presents at Observatory! Hope to see you there!

Torino:Margolis Performance
A performative exploration of electricity, biomedicine, and spectacle
Date: June 29, 2010
Time: 8:00 P.M.
Admission: $5
Please note: This lecture is paired with an event which took place on Tuesday, June 15; More here.

Tonight, join Observatory as it hosts Torino:Margolis in a three-part performance investigating the rich history of biomedicine, electricity, and spectacle. First, the audience will have the opportunity to control the movement of the performer using neuromuscular stimulation, which sends outside electricity into the performer’s muscle, forcing their muscle to contract and the performer to move involuntarily.

In the second part of the performance, they will use electromyography (EMG) in a sound-based performance. EMG is a way of sensing the electricity produced naturally during muscle contraction when an individual moves voluntarily. However, when the performer is physically manipulated by another person there is no action potential generated, no signal sensed by the EMG, and no change in the sound is produced. In this way you can hear someone’s free will.

In the third portion they will add a vocal component to the EMG “rig” by manipulating sound coming from the vocal cords using neuromuscular stimulation.

Torino:Margolis will then explain the workings of the biomedical tools used in the performance and the audience will have the opportunity to ask questions.

Torino:Margolis is a performance art team that smashes through physical and psychological barriers separating one body from another using invasive electronics and biomedical tools. They explore the idea that the self is transient, elusive and modular by playing with the notion of control and free will. Their extraction of physiological processes concretizes these concepts and presents them as questions to the viewer — not to illustrate the mechanism, but to explore the experience. The team has performed nationally and internationally at New York venues such as Issue Project Room, POSTMASTERS Gallery and Exit Art, the HIVE Gallery in California, and the Bergen Kunsthall Museum in Norway. They have lectured for institutions such as SUNY Stony Brook and the School of Visual Arts. For more information please see http://www.torinomargolis.com.

Vaccines Derived from Patients’ Tumor Cells Are Individualizing Cancer Treatment

The first discovery of a cancer gene marker–the BRAF oncogene for melanoma and colorectal malignancies–back in 2002 changed the way many researchers thought about cancer treatment. Rather than approach the disease based on what region of the body it stemmed from, scientists began to identify cancers in terms of their genetic signatures. Researchers now recognize more than 200 kinds of cancer–all genetically unique. [More]

Republican Liberty Caucus of Texas opposes State Party plank against Gay Rights

Release from the Republican Liberty Caucus of Texas, June 24:

Republican Liberty Caucus of Texas Calls on Party Leaders to Address Problems with Anti-Gay Platform Planks

AUSTIN, TX - At the state Republican convention earlier this month the Texas GOP abandoned the Republican tradition of respecting the Constitution and protecting individual liberty and privacy rights by adopting a platform which includes planks which propose an attack on the civil liberties of some of our citizens.

The platform advocates policies which would make it a felony to perform a same-sex marriage in Texas, which would re-criminalize sodomy and which would take away the rights of gay parents in custody cases. These proposals are contrary to the values of most Texans and go against the Republican tradition of standing up for individual liberty.

The Republican Liberty Caucus strongly opposes the Texas GOP platform’s anti-gay and anti-liberty planks. We call for the state party to take action to address this problem. While it may not be possible to repeal or change the party platform, the state leadership should issue a clear statement that the platform is non-binding and does not represent the core, shared beliefs of Texas Republicans or of our candidates.

In a year in which we are looking forward to extraordinary opportunities for a great slate of Republican candidates in Texas, it would be a terrible mistake to shackle them to a platform which will alienate many potential supporters. This platform will weaken the
party at a time when a strong coalition of Republicans and independents is needed to stop the radical agenda of Democrats in both Austin and Washington.

“We need to focus on keeping the government out of our pocketbooks; especially in Texas,” said Texas RLC Chairman, Joey G. Dauben.

“There are far more pressing problems for the GOP in our state to worry about. While I personally disagree with same-sex marriage from a Biblical perspective, marriage is a contract between individuals and God, not with the government. If we want government out of our wallets and our boardrooms, we should also keep government out of our churches and our bedrooms.”

The Republican Liberty Caucus believes that true conservative leaders should be dedicated to cutting government spending rather than wasting resources by advocating policies that open the state up to lawsuits and create conflict. We need to put aside divisive issues and focus on real problems. We should work to bring Texans together to protect the interests of our state and its people and to oppose the radical tax and spend agenda of the Democrats that is bankrupting our nation.

We call on the state party to send a clear message to voters that the this platform does not represent the highest ideals of our party and that as a party we support individual liberty and equal rights for all Texans.

Republicans may only need 216, not 218 to win control of the House

West Virginia Dem nominee says he might not Vote Pelosi

From Eric Dondero:

The magic number for Republicans to win the House, being bandied about by the media, is "218." That's a needed pick-up of 40 House seats by Republicans in November. But the actual number may be lower - a pick-up of 39.

Meet West Virginia State Senator Mike Oliverio. He recently won the Democrat primary for US Rep. WV District 1, beating longtime incumbent and scandle-plagued Rep. Alan Mollahan. Oliverio ran as a strong pro-life, social conservative Dem.

At a recent forum, ironically with Dick Morris as the guest speaker, Oliverio made the following remarks (via The Wheeling News-Register, April 29) :

"I will vote for the candidate in the best interest of West Virginia," Oliverio said following the event. "Hopefully, there will be a better candidate than Nancy Pelosi."

Other sources have cited that Oliverio actually "pledged" during the primary campaign not to vote for Pelosi. One progressive blog even describes Oliverio as a "Tea Bagger," backed by local WV Tea Party groups. Oliverio is strongly opposed to cap and trade legislation.

While a vote for John Boehner for Speaker of the House from Oliverio may not be in the cards, Oliverio's remarks could be interpreted as urging a compromise choice. If a House line-up is close, 216 to 215 for example, a Blue Dog Democrat, like Mississippi's Rep. Gene Taylor or Idaho Rep. Walt Minnick for Speaker could be a distinct possibility. (Minnick is a former Republican who has the most conservative voting record of any House Dem.)

Note - there are currently no Republican congressional nominees who have indicated that they would vote for anyone other than House minority leader Boehner for speaker.

Sharron Angle still leads Harry Reid with a comfortable margin

Despite attack ads by the Reid campaign hitting Angle on being an extremist, she is holding steady in the latest polling numbers released. The liberal media has also piled on, digging up supposedly controversial statements from Angle, many of which have since proven to be false or exagerrated.

From Rasmussen (via Hedgehog):

US SENATE – NEVADA (Rasmussen)
Sharron Angle (R) 48%
Harry Reid (D-inc) 41%

A Tea Party favorite, Angle has also received the enthusiastic backing of 2008 Libertarian Party Vice-Presidential candidate Wayne Root, a fellow Las Vegan.

Editor's Note - Libertarian Republican will have a very special announcement tomorrow regarding Sharron Angle.

Fiscal Conservative Susana Martinez slightly ahead in NM Governor race

There is virtually no change in the New Mexico Governor race since Susana Martinez secured the Republican nomination last month, coming out well ahead of a field of 5. Martinez was endorsed by Sarah Palin.

An earlier poll released right after her win, had her 1 point ahead of Democrat Diane Denish.

Latest from Rasmussen (via Hedgehog):

GOVERNOR – NEW MEXICO (Magellan)
Susana Martinez (R) 44%
Diane Denish (D) 43%

New Mexico has not had a Republican Governor in 8 years.
